National Child Day The Vermilion and Area Early Childhood Coalition hosted a Children’s Festival at the Lakeland College gym on Nov. 21 to celebrate National Child Day (Nov. 20).

Early Childhood Coordinator, Amanda Sargeant said the event brought together groups like the Vermilion Public Library, Vermilion Fire and Rescue, MidWest Family Connections, Alberta Health Services, Be Fit for Life, VIBE and Vermilion Play Development in order to highlight the importance of activities and games in children’s development. “It was a great turnout,” said Sargeant. Vintage Snowmobiles Return In 4th Annual Snowmobile Expo The Ridge Riders Submitted

Western Canada’s largest indoor vintage snowmobile show returns to the Vermilion Regional Centre on Saturday December 5.

The fourth annual Vermilion Ridge Riders Snowmobile Expo runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Our focus is on vintage machines, but everything from antiques to the latest and greatest will be on display,” says Chris Swan, vice-president of the Vermilion Ridge Riders.

Swan coordinates bringing in the collectables, rare and “different” machines for the expo. Last year at the third edition of the show there were 70, this year he’s hoping for 80 or more.

One of those 80 will be a Chaparral, an early 1970s machine built for racing.

“This one is from a local collector who is exhibiting here for the first time. It’s both vintage and rare, number 25 of 32 that

were made,” notes Swan.

“Besides the unique, the show is often a trip down memory lane,” says Swan.

With only a handful of current makes, the Expo offers peeks into snowmobiling history with names such as Motoski, Massey, Skiroule and Rupp. His own 1961 Ski-Doo is an example. “We’ve heard a lot of, ‘We had one of those’ and ‘Grandpa had one of those’,” he says.

Baddock’s Power Products will be on hand with Polaris machines and products. Rekkless Racing, Midwest Auto Supply, Decals and Sign Obsessions, and NAPA Auto Parts will be on hand with snowmobile accessories.

Every year we invite out of town dealers to the show. Last year, those companies were from Wainwright.

DECEMBER 6TH @ 1:30 PM Mayor and Council for the Town of Vermilion, along with Vermilion Junior B Tigers, and Crossroads Funeral Chapel invite you to join them for an afternoon of festivities.

“Christmas - for retail businesses is the bread and butter!” said Ernst.

“Most businesses are hurting now because of the oil industry, and this will be a critical Christmas in determining whether a business will stay around or close.

“A few years ago we lost our second grocery store, then we lost the Co-op hardware store, and then they shut the furniture store down. That encouraged a lot of people to shop out of town, and once people leave it’s really difficult to get them back; it predicated an

no businesses in our town?

Businesses would not be able to continue to donate to local nonprofit org anizations, it c ould also af fect staf fing and where are they going to go? People sell homes and move.”

Many local families argue that it is cheaper to drive to Lloydminster to buy their groceries at the bigger stores.

Ernst argues that if you leave Vermilion to shop at Walmart then all of a sudden you are purchasing everything else in Lloydminister as well.

“Most businesses are very competitive. If you go to them and say, look I can buy this in Edmonton for this price can you match it for me or if you ask them to order something for you they will try and they will get it quite quickly.

more for the convenience.”

Ernst believes if people like Vermilion and if they like the lifestyle here; then they are going to have to support it and that means suppor ting local businesses.

“It ’s fine if you are going to shop out of town but if all the small businesses c lose then you won’t have a choice! What about the seniors in town? What will they do! It’s fine driving to Wainwright or Lloydminster in the summer.. but what about in winter.

What about snow storms! It’s safer to shop locally.

“This impacts a lot of lives in our town. If you are proud of your community, then realize it needs your support now. Don’t depend on others to do what is all our responsibility,” advised Ernst.

Community Closet Keeps Giving

In the span of just over one week, the Community Closet has handed out a total of $27,000 in cheques to 20 different organizations in Vermilion and area.

On Nov. 18, eight churches received donations of $2.000 each: First United Church, St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Parkview Alliance Church, Faith Lutheran Church, St. Olga’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Glad Tidings Pentecostal Assembly, while the Vermilion Girl Guides and the Vermilion Boy Scouts each received $500, for a total of $17,000. On Nov. 10, ten other organizations received donations totalling $10,000.

“We are incredibly grateful. It’s a beautiful thing the Community Closet does,” said Father Roger Rouleau, of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church.

“We have a great partnership with the Community Closet. We most likely will be putting the donation toward equipment and a Vestment for the Church,” added Rouleau.

The Treasurer of St. Olga’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Bill Poliakiwski said, “It’s really helpful. It’s a sizeable donation and it comes in handy. We will be putting it toward maintenance and equipment and upkeep of the building.”

The new Rector at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, the Reverend Mark Murray, said he will literally be taking it to the Board to pray on it, to see where the funds are needed most.

“It can be used in so many ways – we’re very grateful,” added Murray.

Reverend Harvey Hussey of Glad Tidings Pentecostal Assembly said their donation will be used for whatever needs

may arise, while Marla Palmer representing Faith Lutheran Church said the timing of the donation is very fortuitous as the Church is presently undergoing renovations to the roof.

Carmen Zayac from the Vermilion Girl Guides said the donation will help relieve some of the burden of fundraising for their upcoming trips to Europe in 2016 and their

trip to Ottawa on Canada Day in 2017.

Kathy Crowe, who was representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, said the donation will go a long way to help meet so many of the Church’s needs, including coats for kids.

“The Community Closet is so supportive of the many organizations in this town,” she added. “It’s amazing.”

Canada is full.

Memes with much worse sayings on them have been circling social media for a while now. Prime Minister Trudeau has been called names and criticized harshly since elected as our new Prime Minister, and since the attacks in Paris it has become even more prominent and, to be honest, it makes me shake my head.

Sometimes, I don’t understand us as Canadians. We can be such a judgemental hypocritical group of people. When Stephen Harper was our Prime Minister society would persecute him for being a war monger because he was trying to fight the fight and now that our new Prime Minister is trying to do the opposite and pull Canada from the fight people are calling on him to keep our presence there.

Will We Let Them Win?

People are saying he is a weak leader because he did not come and face the people with words of war and revenge after the Paris attacks.

When the bodies of Syrian refugee children showed up dead on beaches in the media, people were calling upon our government to help. With the blink of an eye everything changes. It confuses me.

Do we as a nation even know what we want, because it doesn’t seem like it to me. I think no matter who is Prime Minister of our nation; he is damned if he do and damned if he don’t.

While Justin Trudeau campaigned to be our new leader he clearly laid out his plan to bring over 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of this year and to pull Canadian troops out from fighting the terrorist group ISIS. Now, because of what has happened, he is being called weak, an Ahole and pretty much every other name you can think of because he is standing behind what he said he would do.

Canada has always been known for our kindness, our compassion and our willingness to help any other nation that required it. I understand people are afraid and, believe me, I understand personally that our economy, is in a mess because of the downturn in our oil industry, but will we let that make us a cold, heartless nation?

The people of Syria are fighting a battle, and thousands of innocents have been displaced from their homes and living in conditions that none of us here in Canada can even begin to fathom. Yes, we have homeless people in our country, and yes, our senior citizens and veterans do not receive enough support from our government, and yes I also believe Canada should look out for its own first and foremost.

I am not sitting here ignoring all the problems we as Canadians face every day. I am not sitting here unaware of the crisis within our economy, (believe me it has just affected my family as well). I

am not sitting here thinking that we are immune to terror attacks and living in a bubble thinking that it can never happen to us. I am perfectly aware of how easily it can happen; I carry fear within me but am I going to let the acts of a terrorist group crumble me? am I going to let them win by not wanting to help people who are living in far worse conditions than even I can imagine? If we do we are letting them win, that is why they are called terrorists; their goal is to inflict as much savagery as possible and fill our hearts and souls with terror. If a terrorist wants to come to Canadian soil and attack us he/she does not need to come across as a refugee, they are smart and crafty they will find a way.

In fact, they are already here. They are recruiting within our borders.

Will I let them win? Absolutely not!! I refuse to live in fear because of them, and I refuse to become cold and heartless to other human beings because of their religion, race or look.

Local Islamic Leader Speaks Out About Terror Attacks

The event was designed to help educate everyone especially the youth so that they did not fall prey to the violent ideologies in the future and was not just intended for the Muslim population.

“If you recall, there were a few people who travelled from Canada, especially from Calgary last year to follow ISIS, they weren’t Muslims at first, but they converted. So technically they were never actually converted to Islam they converted to ISIS. It is my belief it’s not a person’s religion, but that sometimes a person’s mentality is already twisted and confused, he has personal issues that makes it easier for them to become radicalized. It was our intent to help people so that they don’t become influenced,” said Azeem.

Azeem also said that they hold Islam Open Houses throughout our communities to give people the opportunity to ask questions.

“I condemn the attacks in Paris and all over the world.” said Imam Tariq Azeem of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Lloydminster.

In the wake of the horrific attacks in Paris, France, Azeem felt it necessary to speak out and tell how true Muslims feel regarding the attacks perpetrated by ISIS or any other extremist group.

The leader of the Islamic congregation discussed his thoughts during a phone interview on Monday morning.

“One thing I would like to highlight is we should all remember that Muslims not just fear, but condemn ISIS and the attacks they carry out all over the world, Muslims are suffering from these terror acts more than anyone else and we are together with all of the nations, especially the French nation at this time. We hope that if we work together and stay united, we can eradicate this problem of terrorism from our communities, our societies and globally,” said Azeem.

While Azeem does not feel they have to worry about any backlash from the attacks he did say; “We feel that Canadians in general are very understanding people, so we do not fear any serious backlash, but there are a few people that get confused when such attacks happen and they take the law into their own hand and commit wrongful things, but generally as I mentioned, I have found Canadians to be very loving and kind people, and I hope that nothing serious will happen in 12345 our country at least.”

The weekend of November 14 and 15 was another enjoyable weekend in our mild November outdoors; practically in my back yard. I sat, as the sun glowed to the east watching moose, a decent whitetail buck and a couple of his does.

Joined by a mule buck and his harem of 15 or more mule does on the other side of the field, it was great to see all in the same land, as a bonus it was also warmer than mornings spent in September and October.

Geese flew overhead, not in a big hurry and their “honking” chatter wasn’t all that urgent as if South was not a priority this fine morning, a hawk also glided over in stealth silence, both a great sign that old man winter isn’t in a big hurry to get here either.

My hunting buddy Blaine and I each harvested a deer, a perfect day that will end with BBQ tenderloins and outstanding table fare for the deep freeze, a huge tender roast is next on the list.

With the hunting adventure over by noon, I had time to check the traplin, which is in the basement. Mice that are bad this time of year were even that much worse because crops cut laid in the fields for much longer than usual. The damp conditions prevented pickup of a lot of the crops surrounding the home property; these crops already cut lay for weeks waiting to dry, providing nice dry

food rich highways for mice. When these crops were picked up the mice “headed out of Dodge” for sanctuary…for miles around all the mice in big herds, could see was my house in the distance, so the race was on!

Now with the wife’s herd of farm kitties you would think mice wouldn’t be an issue, as there is even a couple of indoor kitties, however, apparently the kitties didn’t get the memo. Keep in mind these are the same kitties that feed side by side at the food dish with Magpies…which are birds…which are on the list of a kitties main food group…best add that to the memo also.

Now contrary to belief, not all mice carry the dreaded Hantavirus, a virus that causes “Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome” a serious disease that can be fatal in 50 per cent of infected human victims.

The common house or field mouse that’s all grey with a lighter grey belly are not known to carry Hantavirus; the deer mouse is the biggest threat in Canada. The deer mouse is identified as a pale grey or reddish brown with bright white fur on the feet and belly; great caution is warranted if you have these in your home. To my relief my guests are the common house or field mice; as soon as we realized they were here we bought a dozen traps from everything to multi-live traps to the old fashion snap trap. The only thing I won’t use is the sticky trap, not only do I feel it’s not a trap of “quick demise”, but regardless of where you put it in a home, I will personally guarantee you I will step right on it.

I will also guarantee you they are impossible to remove from an outdoorsmen’s wool sock, so both the trap and one warm sock will end up in the trash bin. Also the “humane live traps” are something to think about, so you got a live trap that can hold up to 15 mice.

Now let’s say you have a half dozen in one of those…now what?...you can’t simply open the back door and open the lid…or you going to take them for a nice drive down the road?

I had a live trap in my shop one time that had two mice in it, so my friend [whom I will not name] and I decided to let them go in the parking lot. There were farm kitties present, but at least the mice had a 50/50 chance of making it right? Ok, well with good intentions the lid was opened…two lightning bolts shot out, one straight for the big overhead garage door and squeezed in between a ¼ inch crack under the rubber door seal and disappeared inside.

Now before I could say” holy crap did you see that?” the other mouse headed for my buddy and disappeared up his pant leg… well, I am here to tell you there was more screaming, jigging and hopping than any all-night country hoedown going on there!

The Vermilion Marauders football team finished a successful season at home on Saturday, November 14, 2015, as WFL Consolation Champs and Zone 7 Tier 4 champs! It was the first time the Marauders made it to Provincials in over 30 years— since 1988! Their season concluded with a loss to the Sexsmith Sabres 48 to 27.

“The players should be proud of their level of play this season”, said Head Coach, Mr. Maier, “thank you to the community for your support this year. It was fun to see how the Marauders captured the town’s attention in the last few weeks.” Proud Assistant Coaches this season included Mr. Weidner, Mr. Steve Theiss, Mr. Ken Myshak and Mr. Joe Myshak.

My junior high art classes spent some time at the Vermilion Public Library where art work by local artist, Alan Wilson, is displayed. While facilitating an opportunity to critique his work, I was impressed that minds of such young ages (grade 7 to 9) and limited life experiences could draw so many reflections and interpretations about the pieces on display. Power that is!! In the far distant past, before we had power out in the rural areas, there was simply no convenience that, that one basic necessity could provide!!

Oh, so many things we take as necessary in today’s life weren’t even on the radar for us country folks!! In the time before we had power, even if the roads had been plowed open, you had a terrible challenge to get a vehicle started those very cold winter times, without the benefit of that block heater. I think of that when I see those nice big pickups with the diesel engines. Back in those times they’d be as much use as a wheel weight in a swimming competition. The first thing on your mind when you looked for a vehicle back then was, will it start in the cold weather?

Remember the hand crank? Back before booster cables and the plug-in battery charger booster deals and that starting fluid even!! When we needed

some grain ground when it was cold the little Ford 9N would run the grinder, but you could almost count the kernels as they went through, so we’d opt to start our Perkins, Fordson Major diesel. The little Ford would start with a little coaxing and some hot water run through the engine, and a few flips of the crank would get results!! Then we’d use it to start the diesel, by turning the engine with the little Fords belt pulley. It did work!!

In the absence of a plug-in, we’d pump up the blow torch to warm the intake manifold and pour hot water through the diesel to warm it up. Sound like fun? Well, we needed the tractor to run, remember we had NO power for a plug-in. With the belts lined up properly and a few other minor details, we could manage to get the tractor started by noon if we started early enough!! Get the picture, we didn’t do this every day, for instance, now, that was just one doing without power trial.

Besides the inconvenience of kerosene lanterns and lamps, it was a real nightmare to wash and dry clothes.

Besides starting the gasoline engines on

the washing machine, which mom found VERY frustrating there was the fingerchilling deal of hanging clothes on the outside line to freeze dry, and then bringing them in to hang them on lines strung across the living room. Remember?

Then, how about those old flatirons that you heated on the stove, I wonder how many have even seen one, let alone try and use one? I guess in today’s world the need for ironing is not like back then.

Anyhow, I can remember when the country store in the next community closer to Vermilion got power and had coolers and deep fryers. Can you imagine the traffic that store suddenly received come the hot summer days when you could get a cold drink and yes, ice cream?

Well, come the power to the farm country and fridges and deep fryers made the storing of garden veggies and your meat so much a wonderful new way of life.

Power made it, so we had all the conveniences that until then was reserved for town folks.

In later years, before power came in, Dad had installed a 32 volt power system

and wind changer, but we needed a kerosene, “servel” fridge and like that, but the difference was many things that power line power gave us was a lot less maintenance and that ability to have the freezer and plug-ins that our little power source couldn’t match.

It’s hard to imagine now the idea of packing in ALL the water a household needed for the needs of a family. Like washing clothes and bathing, to say nothing of drinking water, etc!! Yes, and packing all the waste water back out in various forms.

Indoor plumbing and an indoor toilet, imagine the different life that could be.

Well, we soon became so used to that way of life, our kids have never known that time before power.

I’m wondering what it would be like if the ability to afford all that good stuff became out of reach. That specter seems in the realm of possibility if our politics decides to make power bills to high to pay, maybe there won’t be any little farms out in the country left to use it anyway.

Seniors’ Centre Potluck

It was an entertaining evening at the Seniors’ Centre Potluck on November 18.

Sixty-one people attended the potluck that featured a variety of entertainment following the meal. Emcee Art Boggs warmed up the crowd by telling a few jokes before he introduced Vermilion resident Donna Eyben who expertly played three songs on the piano. A colourful set sung by the Happy Harmonizers Choir, beginning with I’m Always Chasing Rainbows and ending with Somewhere Over the Rainbow followed. The evening wrapped up with a comedy skit written and performed by Gert Isert (L), Ella Eyben (M) and Helen King in which driver (Eyben) and passenger (Isert) are pulled over for speeding by police officer (King). When asked to produce her driver’s license, Eyben produced a litany of items, not one of which was her driving credential. Eyben and Isert couldn’t help but break the fourth wall, and laughed throughout the skit in the face of King’s measured reactions to each and every object pulled out of Eyben’s purse. “It is based on a true story,” said Eyben. A kid shows me a s n a p c h a t h e ’s j u s t received. The snapchat is a video of a native woman looking toward the camera as she’s walking on a sidewalk. She walks one way, then changes direction. I think she looks fearful, panicked even. A male voice yells obscenities at her, racist comments. You can’t see his face, only the woman looking confused, trying to get away. She doesn’t say anything. He keeps shouting at her, swearing and telling her she better get out of there. The voice laughs maniacally. Then it’s over. The whole thing lasts less than 10 seconds.

I feel a combination of outrage and disbelief. A little sick. Some people get their kicks in deranged ways.

What is it, I wonder, that serves as impetus for one person to consider other people worthy of respect while another c onsid er s ever y en c oun ter an opportunity to bully, insult, or intimidate? What makes the difference?

We learn in school the importance of respect and cooperation. We don’t

have to belong to a church congregation in order to recite the Golden Rule.

Regurgitating the concepts though, doesn’t mean we fully comprehend their significance or adhere to them.

Freedom, for creeps, is an invitation to a mass Hate Party. If you think we live in a civilized world, check in sometime.

I participate in an online community whose members share common interests in writing and books. This week, someone posted a one liner: ‘Don’t

Grade 5B has been growing lettuce since early September, and took time on November 16 to enjoy a salad made from their lettuce crop. The verdict was that it was excellent. They will be growing another crop in the spring time.

The 5/6 Canley Cup wrapped up on November 16 with the annual All-Star game. The student All-Stars started the game with 5 straight goals, but the staff made it close with 3 answering goals. The Teddy Bear Toss was very early in the

game with the students scoring within the first five minutes. The Teddy Bears flew onto the court, and the Grade 5 students filled up five huge bags to be donated to Santa’s Anonymous. It was great to see the generosity of our students and families once again this year.

Bullying Awareness Week was November 16-20. The Grade 6 VIBE advisory students (about 16 of the Grade 6 girls) read storybooks on the topic of bullying to younger students. VIBE also sent a link for videos that engaged students in the topic.

The Parent Advisory Council held their monthly meeting on November 16. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing group of parents who support our school.

If you would like to be a part of that great group, please come to the next meeting at 7:00 on January 18 in our library. Each month, VES bouquets are offered at the meeting, and this month they went to all the staff who helped with Dinner Theater, Mrs. Webb for getting information on Facebook so quickly, staff and students who made it such a beautiful Remembrance Day program, the parents who helped to sell Coco Brooks, MacDonald’s Foods for letting us use their freezer overnight to store Coco Brooks products, and Ms. King for well written newspaper articles.

The first round of report cards went home on November 16. Parent teacher interviews were held on November 18 and 19. It was wonderful to see so many parents in VES on those two nights.

VIBE programming has been in full swing at VES and the majority of students have had a program in their class already this year. Students have been building positive mental health through programs such as Building Mental Wellness Kids and Youth, Digital Citizenship, and Study Skills. Many students from VES also participated in the Just Say Hi Campaign during October, which was a great opportunity to make connections in the commu-

ments. We can sometimes connect with people of vast knowledge and generosity of spirit willing to share their expertise with us. Sometimes we’re disappointed by the conduct we witness in others.

Sometimes we disappoint ourselves.

Online, we might try out an alter ego to see how it feels to hide behind the veil of anonymity. But no one is really anonymous. Every one of us is aware of our own conduct and what part of ourselves is on display. We walk away from a conversation, whether in the café or via the keyboard but the impressions we make remain long after the discussion ends. We launch our message, our opinion, out into the world and it has an effect on someone. Maybe a whole community of someones. Cumulatively, all our messages and how we interact with our fellow human beings in person or through cyberspace shout out to the world, declaring the quality of our true natures.

I d e ve l o p e d t h i s recipe out of a desire to completely eliminate all the chemicals in the dressing when m a k i n g c o l e s l aw.

For this salad I use a 14 ounce bag of precut cabbage with grated carrot. The dressing is very easy to make and has a lovely lemon and dill flavour. Honey is used as an emulsifier to bind the olive oil and the freshly squeezed lemon juice together. This salad has a fresh and bright flavour. This recipe calls for the use of a garlic press, which is a useful utensil in obtaining a paste from the garlic. Made with all healthy ingredients, consider adding this salad to your everyday meals.

The children used their imagination as they thought about and drew their favorite place and became more flexible as they moved like their favorite animals.

They experienced the soothing scent of relaxing oils and left with a greater understanding of how to cope with life’s many challenges.

A study at the University of Otago in New Zealand has found that the isothiocyanates in cruciferous vegetable such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower can even cause cancer cells to destruct.

A study in Poland found that women who consumed four servings a week of cabbage had significantly lower breast cancer rates than women who consumed only one serving a week. Eating raw or lightly steamed cabbage helps lower cholesterol. Cabbage is rich in antioxidants and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties in our bodies. Cabbage juice aids in the healing of stomach ulcers and improves digestive health.

While we don’t usually think of cabbage as a source of vitamin C, it is interesting to note that one cup of cabbage provides 50 per cent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C and 91 per cent of DRV of vitamin K. Amazingly cabbage also has omega 3 in the form of alpha linolenic acid in a moderate amount.

Keep in mind that cabbage has only 33 calories per cup, making it a perfect diet food that is packed with healthy vitamins.

Red cabbage is a nutrient powerhouse with six to eight times more antioxidant abilities than green cabbage. The long boiling and cooking of cabbage removes and damages many of its healing and health benefitting components.

Lemon and Dill Cabbage Salad 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoons freshly reamed lemon juice

1 clove of garlic pressed 3/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried dill 1/4 teaspoon celery seed (optional) 1 package of shredded cabbage and carrot, or equivalent in chopped cabbage.

In your ser ving bowl add the cabbage and then toss it with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, which helps prevent the cabbage from softening quickly. In a small bowl combine the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the honey.

Stir until blended and then stir in the lemon juice, the garlic, salt pepper and dill, and keep stirring until the oil blends into the lemon juice. Stir the dressing into the cabbage and serve.

This salad stores well in the refrigerator, and the cabbage softens and the flavours mingle. I love it both ways.

St. Jerome’s School News

High School students and staff are waiting in great anticipation to reclaim the high school end of St. Jerome’s.

The renovations are almost completed on the south end of the school, furniture has arrived and is being assembled, and Mr. and Mrs. Dekker are working hard to get everything cleaned for the move. The next stage of renovations will take place in the Elementary end of the school or the east end.

Those classrooms will be moving into a variety of different areas throughout the school.

busily preparing already for the Christmas Concer t. The hallways are full of their beautiful singing voices and the actors are memorizing their lines.

This year’s Christmas Concert will be held on Thursday, December 10 in the Alumni Theatre at Lakeland College staring at 7:00 p.m.

Elementary students received their repor t cards on Thursday, November 19. Parent / Teacher Inter views for Kindergar ten to Grade 5 will be held this Tuesday, November 24 and Wednesday, November 25 from 4:00- Kindergarten students at Elevation.

Lemon And Dill Cabbage Salad

On Thursday, November 19, elementary students were educated about Farm Safety. Through “Safety Smarts” presentations unique to each grade level, students were taught to recognize and react safely to a wide variety of potential farm hazards. Each presentation was hands on and interactive and taught our rural children important messages about how to stay safe on the farm.

Students from Grades 3-6 were all invited to participate in our after school Games Club on Mondays during the month of November. Each week, the students were introduced and taught the rules to a new game and then had the opportunity to play. Apples to Apples, Uno, Bingo, Sequence (Five in a Row), Operation, and Even Steven Odds were some of the games played eac h we ek . B a se d o n at te n d an c e increasing each week, our Games

Club was a hit!

The Rocks and Rings program came out to do a session on curling with our physical education classes November 6th. Kindergarten to Grade 8 enjoyed learning about the game of curling. They got to practice throwing rocks into the rings and learned how to sweep. They got to play a game and mini tournament. It was very entertaining for all.

Dolly Dalton dazzled the Grade 9 and 10 physical education students when he brought his skills and coaching knowledge to the classroom on November 17th. We appreciate the time Dolly spent teaching our students, and are grateful for the experience of having an expert in the field (or pitch!) visit Mannville School. We look forward to his visit again next week. Vermilion Welcomes New RCMP Officers

In recent months the Vermilion RCMP detachment has received two new young officers; Cpl. Corey M. Buckingham, originally from the Saskatoon area, and Cst. Michael Standcumbe, from Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Cpl. Buckingham has been in the force for almost eight years to date, stationed in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, La Loche, Saskatchewan and Williams Lake, BC, before being transferred to Vermilion after receiving a promotion two months ago.

“It’s a great community with lots of great people and it is relatively low crime from what I’m used to, said Cpl. Buckingham.

After completing six months at the RCMP Academy (Depot) in Regina, Saskatchewan, an officer must complete field training where they work very closely with another member from their detachment for guidance. Their first post can be anywhere in Canada.

“You don’t really have a choice where you get stationed out of depot. As you get more service and experience you have

more say about where you want to go.”

Cpl. Buckingham’s family has also moved to Vermilion with him.

“We were all really excited about the move and I will probably be based here for the next 4 to 6 years.”

“I had family and cousins that were in the police service but the reason I got into the RCMP was because I wanted to help people.

“Certainly this job is not for everybody and some people do drop out of the training. There is a lot of personal commitment involved. You have to agree to move basically anywhere in Canada.”

Cst. Michael Standcumbe has been stationed in Vermilion now for the past eight months and says that he likes Vermilion a lot so far.

Cst. Standcumbe said that some of his colleagues he trained with in Regina were posted to less desirable places but he is very happy to be in Vermilion in comparison.

“I quite like Vermilion. It’s a good town with a wide variety of things that happen here. I like that there are things going on in

this town instead of being dull.”

It was Standcumbe’s idea to start the recent friendly floor hockey games between the RCMP and the students at the local schools in Vermilion in an effort to combat negative perceptions about the RCMP in the community.

“If the kids in Vermilion grow up influenced by negative perceptions seen on Facebook and in the media about the cops being bad people and there is no positive interaction with them, then they could grow up to think like that and in some cases it

can escalate into something that could be dangerous. Hockey is a calm and peaceful alternative,” said Cst. Standcumbe.

A self-confessed diehard Canucks hockey fan, Standcumbe says he looks forward to many more hockey games with the students and playing with colleagues on the RCMP hockey team.

From Chilliwack BC, a similar agricultural community, Standcumbe says he does miss the BC Mountains but gets a fair trade off with the Albertan skies and the sunsets.

Chamber Prepares For Candy Cane Countdown, Festival Of Trees, And Night Light Parade

This year’s Night Light Parade theme is “Minion Mania� and it takes place on November 26 at 7 p.m. (Judging at 6:30 p.m. at the Lakeland Mall parking lot.) “We thought it would be fun, everybody loves Minions,� said Feist. “We have 12 float entries so far, but we’re always welcoming more. People can enter a float right up to the day of the parade.�

Following the parade, pictures with Santa (by Dragon Hare Studios) will take place at the Seniors’ Centre from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

The 6 th Annual Festival of Trees will also take place at the Seniors’ Centre starting on Nov. 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Nov. 27 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Nov. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Decorate a beautiful tree and auction it or just have it for display at the Festival of Trees.� Proceeds from the Festival of Trees will support Santa’s Anonymous and the Vermilion Community Food Bank. Non-

perishable food donations as well as a silver collection will also be accepted during the three-day festival.

The Rotary Club will be selling hot beverages and goodies on behalf of Haying in the 30’s, an organization that financially assists cancer patients with their treatments.

New to the Festival of Trees line-up this year is cookie decorating for kids as well as kids’ entertainment on Saturday, November 27 at the Seniors’ Centre. “We have a lot happening in three days,� said Feist.

The Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce officially kicks off its Candy Cane Countdown on Monday, November 23 that runs to December 18, the Night Light Parade on November 26, and the Festival of Trees that runs from November 26 to 28. “It is one of the biggest events of the year for the Chamber,� said Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce Office Manager, Michelle Feist.

The Candy Cane Countdown is the first event that will be launched and it is your passport to local shopping at 69 participating stores this holiday season added Feist. “It’s important to keep it (shopping) in town because you’re helping out your neighbours; you’re helping send your friend’s kid to hockey, or soccer camp.

It’s really nice to support your neighbours instead of the big box stores.�

Participating merchants will stamp your passport as you do your holiday shopping. Completed passports can then be dropped off at one of three draw boxes around town; at Lakeland Mall, Craig’s and Eastalta Co-op.

On December 7 and 14 there will be two early bird draws for $250 in Chamber bucks that can be spent at any of the participating stores. If you’re looking to fill your passport up quickly, December 4 and 11 will be double stamp days. Spending $200 completes a passport.

Jimmy Cracks Up Dewberry

Jimmy the Janitor entertained a full house in the Dewberry School gym.

About 200 people showed up for his show and laughed the evening away.

The MC for the evening was Lionel Romanchuk, who did an excellent job.

There was a wide range of people there including Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Dr. Richard Starke. Jimmy entertained us with two 45 minute sets with a short

intermission inbetween when we served would also like to thank everyone else who helped put on this function. coffee and cake. After the show Jimmy came out and met with some of his fans and they had the opportunity to take some pictures with him. The profit for the evening was just over $4000.00. The Dewberry Hall Society would like to thank Lionel Romanchuk and Wade Maltais for looking after the sound and lighting for the evening and the high school boys who helped put down the matting, move the tables and set up the chairs. “A Back Home Christmas” Success The Vermilion Minor Hockey Association hosted their annual fundraiser at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Saturday, Nov. 21. It was a formal affair with an East Coast theme featuring cocktails, dinner, entertainment, and a silent auction. The Regional Centre was transformed into a glittering Christmas wonderland for the evening and it was filled to near capacity. As part of the entertainment, guests participated in a Wheel of Fortune contest with prizes for the winner. Event organizer, Shannon Leonard holds the mic as contestant Candice Anderson solves the word puzzle during her round of Wheel of Fortune. Funds raised go toward supporting the Vermilion Minor Hockey Association and its players.

Singer Catherine Lewans At Nick’s Louge

It was the Country Recording Artist Catherine Lewans first time in Vermilion on Friday night, November 20. As a singer and songwriter Lewans songs are mainly inspired by her faith, as well as the relationships she’s formed with the people around her. Lewans’ other influences include life experiences, memories of her childhood, dreams she’s had, and her desire to make a positive change in the world. Lewans has worked with some of the world’s best musicians and songwriters throughout her career. A moderate crowd foot tapped and sang along to the country music hits. Lewans is originally from Shaunavon in Saskatchewan.

The Village of Marwayne was featured in this month’s Alberta Urban Municipalities Association’s (AUMA) Digest that is featuring stories about municipalities that have received a 2015 AUMA Sustainability in Action Award recognizing “governance in sustainability planning.”

Marwayne won the award for municipalities with a population under 2,500. The Digest said Marwayne was recognized for its creation of “umbrella governance” that brings together over 30 groups to collaborate and consult on community projects and the management of recreation facilities. These are key components to the sustainability plan.

“Our sustainability plan has been in effect since 2008,” said Village of Marwayne CAO, Joanne Horton.

“What the AUMA was looking for this year was who has been updating their

Marwayne Raking In Awards sustainability plan, and who has been continuing to work it.”

Some of the projects that have been completed under this governance are – the building of a new campground and community hall as well as the revitalization of Marwayne’s Main Street. Horton said the renovations to the arena and the community hall building cost $3M while the downtown revitalization project cost $2.1M. “Those are two huge projects for a small town,” she added. “We will keep going. If we hadn’t been sitting around the table dreaming years ago, we wouldn’t be where we are now.”

The next project they will be working toward may not be as visible, but is just as large in scope.

“We just got a federal grant to do three blocks of underground infrastructure renewal on some of our residential areas, so that’s what I know we will be focusing on; trying to match those cash flows and get that planning all in place. That’s another $3M dollar project for us.

“We sit down with all the groups, Council and the Ag Society and other groups and we talk about what is going on and our community capital budget is developed

and the report card of where we’re going is included in a newsletter telling people how we are doing. We do that every year.”

The report card will be out in the December newsletter.

“It’s a provincial award and we feel very proud that we’re recognized for hard work.”

Horton added that the Lea Park Rodeo Committee’s recent Nov. 14 win for the Best Grounds in the Large Rodeo category from the Canadian Pro Rodeo Association (CPRA) highlights how the groups are all working together.

“They (Lea Park Rodeo Committee) fall under the Ag Society umbrella and they are at the table when we plan,” said Horton.

“It’s a very prestigious award,” said CPRA Rodeo Administrator, Kyle Rock. “It is voted on by all the barrel racers in the competition. They are running some very expensive horses and need to be very conscious of the ground conditions,” he added.

“It takes a lot of work to maintain the ground. They should be very proud.”

Lea Park beat out 10 other rodeos including Medicine Hat and Ponoka in this category. Last year the CPRA awarded Lea

Park the Most Improved Rodeo Ground in the Large Rodeo category.

“They have come leaps and bounds in a year,” said Rock.

The President of the Lea Park Rodeo, Lloyd Gray, said maintaining the ground for this year’s rodeo posed a huge challenge for grounds men and Committee members Rick Hozack and Greg Tobler.

“This year Mother Nature didn’t cooperate; there was no rain at all. There was no natural moisture,” he added. “We had to put a lot of water in our arena to get it to the point where it was workable... the right amount of firmness, the right amount of cushion, the right amount of softness - just the way they like it.”

Gray said they started experimenting with new things about five or six years ago to make the ground better and purchased a groomer that has worked out “very well.”

“It feels really good,” said Gray about the award. “It’s always a nice honour to win something.”

South Afr i c a , Eng land, Z am bia , Botswana and Zimbabwe are on the menu as six couples from Vermilion and area, namely Ken and Marilyn Bossert, Jerry and Dot Hartwell, Keith and Laureen Galloway, Ewen and Jane Lawrence and Dean and Bobbi McMullen join people from Wainwright, Lloydminster, Edmonton, and High River for a three week tour through Southern Africa.

London is our first stop, and most of us take the underground train to the inner city. As we exit the train station, our first impression of London is the magnificent “Big Ben” and Westminster Abby. We walk across the Thames river and then enjoy a typical London pub lunch of fish and chips with mushy peas. We walk to Buckingham Palace and back on the packed train accompanied by somber looking Britons.

A long flight to Johannesburg leaves us somewhat tired but excited and ready for our adventure. We drive north of Johannesburg to a private game reserve and we are immediately treated to rhinos, giraffes, and different African antelope. The next day, after our safari, we visit a rural town and also a black township which exposes the realities of this intriguing country. We enjoy supper in a cave and the great hospitality.

The famous Kruger National Park is next. We find nature as unspoiled as it has been for thousands of years. At our first camp, we BBQ under the African sky and see elephants come to drink at night, at the water hole. It is very hot and also very dry in the Kruger Park.

We see dr y rivers, water holes and dams everywhere. Even dams where hippos were always found, are dry. We

are very fortunate to see leopards on four different occasions, twice with its prey, an impala, hanging up in a tree.

We are for tunate to be able to see the “big 5”, and all the wonderful and different animals the Kruger Park has to offer.

We then fly to the southern coast to George, where we stay in a hotel adjacent to an “Ernie Els designed” golf course. We drive to the ocean and enjoy the ocean life of South Africa, with white beaches, excellent seafood, South African hospitality and nature.

We st ay in an aweso m e “ treeto p ” lodge like celebrities. We drive pass grain fields to Stellenbosch and enjoy the excellent wines of South Africa.

We spend two nights in Cape Town.

We visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. We enjoy Table Mountain and all this historic city has to offer.

Our next flight takes us to real third world Africa in Zambia. We stay in a beautiful colonial hotel on the Zambezi river and enjoy to be spoiled. We visit the Chobe Park in Botswana, and we are convinced we are in paradise.

The number of elephants and hippos we see, is unbelievable. We go on a sunset cruise, we ride elephants, walk with lions, and go on helicopter and microlight flights over the Victoria Falls.

We visit an orphanage to hand over clothes and gifts we brought. Some of us also swim in the “devil’s pool” on the edge of the Victoria Falls. The Zambezi river is very low, and we have to cross the border into Zimbabwe, to see the falls from that side. We can only imagine how magnificent the falls has to be in full flood.

We fly back to South Africa and spend our last night and enjoy supper in Pretoria. Tired, but fulfilled, we sit back

They finished first in their pool, defeating Marwayne in the semi-finals and facing Malliag in the final game. The two teams battled hard with the Spartans winning the first 38 – 36. However, the Spartans were not able to prevail in the next two, but proudly brought home Silver. Thank you to Mr. Al Rogan and Zac Kobel for coaching this team of amazing young men.

The St. Jerome’s Spartan’s girls also had an excellent season of volleyball.

They attended 1A Zone playoffs in Bonnyville where they came in first in their pool defeating Paradise Valley, New Myrnam, Ecole du Sommett, and Ecole des Beaux-Lacs.

As they entered the Semi-finals they defeated St. Mary’s to advance them to the finals.

In the final they met the Mallaig Stingers and played some excellent volleyball

The local RCMP are known for patroling and protecting our streets, but they also volunteer within the community.

The National not-for-profit organization KidSport launched their fourth annual Give the Gift of Sport fundraising campaign that runs from Nov 17. to January 8, 2016, but it is an initiative that the Director of Community Services for the Town of Vermilion, Shawn Bell, said the Town is open to promoting on a year-round basis.

“We have an ongoing promotion with Vermilion Minor Hockey. There’s a parking spot at the Stadium that people can bid on at their Minor Hockey event. It’s a revenue generator and they donate the money back to KidSport. Events like that are the way we have been going with our promotions for KidSport,” said Bell.

According to KidSport over 30 per cent of Canadian youth under the age of 18 cannot afford to play organized sport. They aim to provide any child who wants to play an opportunity to do so.

“Sports is a great way for kids to learn lots of skills, as well as being active. Being

“Lots of what we pay for is registration fees, said Bell. “But we can also provide equipment for individuals for a particular sport if they don’t have the money.”

Bell said on average, the program assists 15 to 25 kids in Vermilion and area a year, depending on the year.

“This year, as we know, the economy is

a little slow and not looking great and we’ve gotten quite a few more than our usual average. We have 30 so far, and we’re not quite done (the year) yet.”

A Close Game

The Vermilion Rock faced the Kitscoty Monarchs at the Vermilion Stadium on Friday, Nov. 20.

The Rock pressed hard from the start, and managed to keep the play in the Monarchs’ end for the first half of the opening period. The Monarchs responded and evened out the action for the remainder of the first period until Vermilion opened the scoring with less than one minute remaining.

The Monarchs scored twice in the second period to the Rock’s one goal, evening up the game as they went into the third. The Monarchs eventually edged out the Rock by one goal, resulting in a final score of 3-4.

The Rock’s Steve Simmons (#15) was the hat trick hero of the night, scoring two of the three goals shorthanded.

Vermilion Rock Coach, Darcy Fadden said the team outplayed the competition territorrially outshooting them 35-25, but the Monarchs capitalized on a couple of mistakes.

“We could easily be fighting for 3rd or 4th place,” added Fadden. “We just need to tighten up those gaps and just keep going.

We don’t want to get too far out of the playoff race too early.”

The Rock currently sits in 6th place in the SaskAlta Senior Hockey League standings.

The next home game will be against the 3rd place Elk Point Elks on Friday, Dec. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Vermilion Stadium.

Vermilion A&W will be participating in a “Chicken Sampling” campaign that will officially kick-off in Vermilion on Monday, November 23.

All the local businesses in Vermilion that are listed in the phonebook will be entered in a draw to win a free chicken meal delivered to their business, said Vermilion store Manager Mindy Anderson.

“If you want your name in the draw more than once, then all you have to do is send an employee down here, purchase a meal and then we will write their (business) name down and put it into the draw.

So the more employees that come in, the more times your name is going to get in there.”

Participating Canalta A&W stores are dispersing 250 pieces of chicken per store in their communities from now until Dec. 21. Individual stores decided how the chicken will be handed out.

“Some people are walking around and handing out chicken, some are doing draws and some are doing random give-

aways.”

Anderson will personally be delivering the chicken meals herself, or if the business prefers to drop into the store to dine in, accommodations will be made said Anderson.

“Some people might want to get out of the office.”

Depending on staffing, Rooty the Bear will be accompanying Anderson on her deliveries.

A draw will be made every Monday beginning Nov. 23 and will run until Monday, Dec. 21. The winning business will get to choose which day of the week and time of day they want the meal delivered.

The meal will include, 20 pieces of chicken (depending on the size of the business, it may be more), a bucket of fries, two sides of red skinned potato salad with dill, two coleslaws and gravy.

“We’re hoping we will get some good feedback from the winners,” said Anderson. That way we’ll know what people like. We’re working to figure out what the best combination is for what people in the Town like.”

The Town of Vermilion’s Economic Development Officer, Mary Lee Prior, said the new signs, one at the Rotary Lookout and two in front of the Pomeroy Hotel, were all supposed to go up at the same time, but rain delayed that plan.
