Community Closet Donates Back To The Community

Every dollar made at the Community Closet not-for-profit thrift store in Vermilion, which is run by volunteers, goes back into the community.

Donation presentations for more than $10,000 were made last week by the Community Closet to local organizations and groups at the Community Closet on November 10.

Royal Canadian Legion 2 n d Vice President Katie Cooper confirmed that the Royal Canadian Legion would be using their $500 donation for this year’s Remembrance Day lunch.

Gwen Gouchee accepted the $2000 donation for Vermilion Hand-Van. “ We will be putting this donation torwards the purchase of a future new Hand-Van,” said Gouchee.

“A n y o n e t h a t c o m e s t o s c h o o l hungry in Mannville will get fed. The donation will go a long way towards buying equipment like toasters and blenders. Right now we feed about 12 to 15 kids for free,” said Mannville Hot Lunch program Lori Harder.

Helen Timanson was surrounded by family, friends and fellow residents at Vermilion Valley Lodge to celebrate her 105th birthday on Thursday, November, 12.

Timanson’s actual birthday was the week before, and the celebration at the Lodge was the second party thrown in her honour; the first was by her family.

The week in between gave Timanson a chance to rest up for the second par t y said Vermilion Valley Lodge Recreation Director, Marilyn Evans.

Evans added that most people want to know what the secret is to living such a long life. For Timanson the answer can be summed up in a word – “BINGO!” said Evans.

Timanson, who was seated at the head table at the front of the room, smiled just hearing the word.

The c elebration also drew lo c al dignitaries, Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Dr. Richard Starke and Mayor Bruce MacDuff, who both said a few words to mark the o c c asion. Both m ad e r efe r e n c e to t h e a m o u nt of histor y and change Timanson has seen in her lifetime.

Timanson was born and raised in Vermilion, married and moved to a farm in Dewberr y where she raised her family. She has been residing at

the lodge for close to 15 years. “ It ’s an honour to be here,” said Starke.

He personally handed Timanson official recognition from the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the form of

Police Investigate Damage To Several Vehicles

On October 23, 2015 three vehicles were damaged while parked outside a business in the downtown area of Vermilion. A Blue Dodge Dakota, a Black Chevrolet Monte Carlo and a Silver Pontiac Grand Prix were all subject to deep scratches in the paint.

The Vermilion RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the person(s) responsible for this crime. Inves-

When I first st ar te d p o n d eri n g w h at I w o u l d write about for my editorial this week, I decided I would weigh in on all the hoopla surrounding the Starbucks red coffee cup, that has so many people posting and ranting on social media.

I can’t understand why there is such a controversy over a stupid coffee cup being plain red instead of having the past wintery scenes and perceived Christmas scenes on it. People are saying that Starbucks has denounced Christmas within their stores even though you can still buy gift cards with these scenes on them and ornaments.

If you take the time to research the designs of the Starbucks holiday cups, you will find each year they have changed the cups’ decorations from ornaments to snowmen, and green trees, and since 2009 they have slowly made their cups with less bold print.

As a society, we had come to perceive the images printed on previous Starbucks coffee cups as Christmas related, however, what we call a Christmas tree

was originally viewed as a German pagan ritual. And, even before the known Christmas tradition the European Gauls used evergreen branches to liven up their homes during the long dark days of winter.

It was when a fashionable British Queen, who loved glittery decorations, decorated a tree that helped make the popular Christmas Tree a tradition.

Furthermore, if you look at the history of the ever popular snowman that has been presented on a Starbucks coffee cup, you will soon discover that the snowman was produced back in the Ice Age when humans attempted to produce idealized effigies of what they thought they looked like. They especially made effigies of the women in the clan as they were the matriarchs and alpha females who ran things in that period.

So, what we refer to as ‘Snowmen’ probably started out as ‘Snowwomen’. It is also said, that the Snowman’s origins can be linked to the Middle-Ages for the worship of Jack Frost. The association with Christmas, again came from Victorian Britain where they borrowed from Pagan rites and folk traditions in Europe, and revamped them into the Christian festival, along with the Christmas tree and Santa Claus. So, as you can see

none of the images we now associate with ‘Christmas’ started out that way; they were used for completely different reasons. We as a society have adopted these traditions over time and have labelled them as symbols of Christianity and Christmas, which is not the case at all.

It is not my intention to say we should not hold our traditions and beliefs close to our hearts or change the way we celebrate our holidays, but I am questioning, is it right to start a huge controversy over the lack of images on a coffee cup?? It is a cup that will end up in a garbage bin, forgotten about once the beverage is gone. I think it is a tad bit ridiculous, especially when the images portrayed did not even originate as the symbols we perceive them to be in these times.

Conflicts can begin when people or societies disagree on the value placed on one’s beliefs and traditions. It is known that the most common cause of conflict and the root of most wars is Ideological change. No one wants to change their ideologies; no one wants to broaden their views and see that the world is made up of such diversity. We all want to live in the world stuck without change, Yes, we all have our thoughts and ideas, but we should all learn to live

and think outside the box.

Look at the world in which we live. If it is not one section of religion fighting and disagreeing with another section of religion causing conflict, then it is countries fighting each other over territories. Innocent people are being shot and bombed while trying to go out and have fun and just live their lives. Radical Islamists, such as ISIS cannot and will not accept the diversity within our world. Wars have raged for years because of it and it seems no matter what we try nothing will ever change it!! No amount of security, no amount of retaliation and no amount of peacekeeping will ever change these radical ideologies.

So let’s put this into perspective, as humans and as different nations we have much bigger concerns than the pictures or lack thereof on a coffee cup.

Who cares if a business decides to make their coffee cup all red during the holiday season? I sure as heck don’t!

What is happening in our world, the fighting and the killing of innocents should be what is making you see red, not a coffee cup!!

The Importance of Shopping

On November 28, join millions of Canadians in a nationwide campaign. This group of Canadians is no ordinary group, because together they will boost the Canadian economy by more than 90 million dollars in a single day. They will do this amazing feat simply by shopping in locally owned small businesses. On November 28, many participating locally owned business are offering sales and amazing deals. They are also offering something more, which is a neighborhood connection and community support.

While there will be many sales and deals, “the goal of Shop the Neighbourhood is not about deep discounts or intense consumer savings,” said Shop the Neighborhood spokesperson Fiona Story, “But just (a reminder) that when we choose to spend our dollars at the small businesses that make

up our neighbourhood, there are environmental impacts that go with that, there are charitable impacts that go with that, there are economic impacts that go with that.”

When you give your hard earned dollars to a locally owned business it starts a series of chain reactions, such as jobs for their staff, donations to community and charity events and support to sports teams, hospitals and other local businesses. It is a never ending circle of community supporting community. It is the local businesses and citizens of the past and present that have built our communities.

In Canada this nationwide, “Shop the Neighbourhood” campaign, spearheaded

by Yellow Pages, kicked off in 2013.

They are using #shopthehood to connect communities to this event; there is also a downloadable app.

This movement has been happening at the grass roots level for many years prior to the Yellow Pages launch or the Shop Small Biz movement, Both organizations have injected much needed focus and

form to the cause. Shopping locally owned is the antidote to the lure of American box stores, with deep pockets for perpetual advertisements telling you they are the best deal (even when they really are not), taking billions of Canadian dollars, leaving the country with it and weakening the local economy. When the big box stores invade a community, they believe it will take three to five years to squeeze out their competition.

The opportunist American invasion is not the only threat locally owned communities face. Canada Post has reported that 73 per cent of Canadians are engaged in internet shopping, which is also taking another bite out of community resources.

Shopping locally owned is an opportunity to be part of a grass roots movement that gives you the power to inject your local community with increased vitality and strength. It is a chance to say thank-you to the businesses that have raised money for sports teams, arenas, churches, hospitals and a host of community events. They have supplied endless door prizes, silent auction

items, sponsorships and cash donations.

It is also a time to create awareness about the importance of neighbourhood communities that need to be supported more that one day a year. They need to be supported so that they will be there for you and future generations.

Recently Saskatchewan NDP leader Cam Broden, introduced a Bill that would declare the first Saturday of the month as “buy local day” in Saskatchewan. This Bill has gone to the second reading. Broden has explained ”Anything that we can do as a province to support local Saskatchewan businesses is a great thing, it keeps dollars in the province. We know that there is a bigger spin-off that supports other businesses and community groups.”

When it comes to shopping, 90 per cent of the shopping decisions are influenced by women. The war that is being waged on our Canadian businesses identity and neighbourhood communities is put into the hands of these Canadian women. Shopping wisely has impact.

I have noticed in the press that once again government is saying that they are creating jobs.

If government returning tax funds to the private sector creates jobs, then when the taxes are taken out of the private sector, jobs are destroyed.

It would be more accurate to say that government is restoring previously destroyed jobs in the private sector while incurring administrative costs in taking the taxes out and then putting them back in.

The next worst thing the government does is destroy productive jobs in the private sector and replace them with productive jobs in the public sector which are less effective due to bureaucratic management.

replace them with bureaucratic waste and inefficiency. Canadian governments take over 40 per cent of the annual private sector income in taxes which is a tremendous loss in potential investment and the associated employment.

they have on the economy. When a government claims to be creating jobs either they are dishonest or they do not understand the impact of taxes on the economy. The truth is that the net effect of governments is to destroy jobs.

For the second week of November, I have to say it is still very nice out there. We had a skiff of snow but it’s already gone, and the long range forecast is sunny for rest of week. If we remember last year, it was a whole lot worst out there with the white stuff, Old Man Winter came to visit early and decided he didn’t want to leave…for what seemed to be forever.

I have seen many flocks of geese still flying around yesterday, huge flocks…so that is a good thing; it means it’s still not too nasty to the north, where that grumpy old man lives.

I am totally acclimatized and adapted to the cold and prepared for winter now, although, I am still struggling with the short days already, with the shortest day of daylight coming next month it will only get darker. But it is something we as Canadians have bred right into us, the ability to quickly adapt and acclimatize to winter, it’s easier if we don’t fight it and let it happen.

I see my Chickadees are back on the feeders looking for suet and seeds, when

we field dress animals from our harvests in the fall I save all the fat for suet for the birds. Please put out a feeder this winter and help out our local birds that are beneficial to us, it is very warming to watch a butterball Chickadee feeding all winter on the feeder out the kitchen window or on the patio.

All the big red berries on our huge mountain ash tree near the patio have already been picked clean by the songbirds such as Grosbeaks, Robins and heavily by the Waxwings. The Waxwings will arrive at certain times each year early winter in big flocks and clean the tree bare; now the question is why do they show up at that time, is it because of fall migration? I think the question is more is the mountain ash tree a convenient, fast food stop or is it more like a local tavern for the waxwings, because when they show up the berries are fermenting, and yes they are getting hammered. By hammered, yes, I mean intoxicated or falling drunk, they will fly into windows, buildings or simply fall to the ground and stagger around for hours, I swear they do this on purpose. I have seen Robins and Magpies eating all the early berry bushes, such as all our Saskatoon’s in the spring after they get over ripe; I am suspecting they are doing the same

thing. I can’t prove it, but the Magpies especially will leave the cat and dog food alone for a couple weeks and their droppings are pure purple, and many act very strange, I think they are all hopped up on natural Saskatoon Wine. I also notice that many of the apples on our apple trees; and one tree is full-size apples, fall to the earth that nothing touches them until they start spoiling…or in this case fermenting.

So if you have berry or fruit trees in your yard and see a favorite bird staggering around on the ground, it may not be sick or injured, it just may need a safe place to sober up for a few hours.

A reminder to all the hunters out, please get permission on all property’s, even with neighbors or landowners that gave you permission years ago, its come to the point that asking for permission should be asked every year as things change.

We are seeing more and more great lands that are getting posted with NO Hunting!! That hurts us all and is due to those that trespass and do things that upset landowners, and we all pay for that action.

Most landowners will work with you and may have specific restrictions or regulations; please work with them, so we all enjoy a great day outdoors or hunting

adventures, as many signs say now USE RESPECT!!

The Miss Pickles Chronicles Well, folks, today is Miss Pickles first birthday, she is now a one-year-old, and I am sure I aged five years in that same period, but I am grateful for her and that she is still by my side.

When the Vet said that her breeds make them a puppy for three years before they mature…that wasn’t an exaggeration; Miss Pickles is all puppy, just a oneyear-old puppy.

When the wife complains about Miss Pickles constant antics, my response is always “Ahhhh but Mom she’s jusssst a pupppppy!!!” However, I was told that as of today she is no longer a puppy. I have a feeling that there may be two of us sleeping in Miss Pickle’s doghouse from time to time, which is no fun cause she always like to stretch out and kicks in her sleep.

When The Smoke Clears Give thanks to all those that contribute to our freedom and way of life in Canada.

Minor Hockey Hosts East Coast Christmas Fundraiser

This year the Vermilion Minor Hockey Association will host an East Coast themed event called ‘The Back Home Christmas’. It is set to be a Christmas fundraiser with a difference, serving a traditional East Coast dinner, themed decor and prizes.

Let’s tell the story – so of ten told, I’m sure, that relates how a young couple comes to a strange new land and carves a wonderful farm, ranch or whatever from the wilderness. Yes, and through all the hard times and trials, raised a family that were spared the hard beginnings but knew of the wealth and good things it afforded!!

Yes, the son had the task of his studies and learning and shouldn’t have to worr y ab out finan c es and such, should he? He had a credit card, and he really didn’t even realize the sacrifices that his folks made to keep it paid!! He listened with quiet distain when he was told of the hard times of bad years and poor crops and prices and thought, “How quaint ”, “Things like that are beyond me and they’ll never effect me!!”

So, time passes and his folks aren’t able to carry on with the farming and give this young man the option of carrying on the work they spent their life to develop, and left a going concern that did make a modest living.

The old Yellow Dog is still willing. I imagine her walking right into her final breath. Does she comprehend the concept of getting old? Probably.

She still runs, or feigns the motion of running. If a cat----or better, a rabbit---crosses our sight lines, she will alter her gait, adjust her posture in readiness.

For a few seconds, she gallops. I watch, reminded of days now long past when her sleek golden coat shone, and her movements were swift with spirit and youthful agility. The spirit remains. Once, earlier this fall, we ran together, my impetus being an approaching black bear while hers was a mix of my tugging on her leash and compliance with the urgency in my voice. Most days, though, walks are walks. Unhurried. Dog does plenty of sniffing between rest stops. There are

periodic joyful rolls in the grass or, when I’m not paying enough attention, dirt.

Yellow Dog and I ventured one day to the post office. We’ve been there many times but as days pass I find myself more carefully considering how far is too far for her to manage. We consulted. She reminded me that while she is old, she is not yet lame. The journey took a long time but we were in no hurry.

There are benches outside the post office. Once, on a day far busier than the one I’m writing about now, I paused to talk with a man sitting with arms crossed on the bench in front of the main entrance.

‘I used to work here,’ he said with pride.

‘Forty years.’ I think of him sitting there still in his straw panama hat, and of the conversation we shared.

I retrieved our mail. There’s no longer a table in the lobby to sort things. Somehow, the absence of it leaves the feeling that it’s something more than just the table that’s been taken away. People shuffle by now,

barely acknowledging each other. There is no place nor any reason to pause. On this day, one or two scowl. They are not dog people, I suspect.

Outside, I look again at the t wo benches. One is littered with debris.

Someone’s eaten lunch and afterward neglected to deposit the leftovers in the trash can. Well, it IS five steps away. We choose the other one, the same bench that Forty Year Man once sat upon. The memory of him, of our conversation, is good.

I’ve seen other people sitting on this bench. Sometimes they sit with backpacks or bags at their feet. Sometimes they say hello. Sometimes they ask for money or a smoke. As on any week day, people arrive on foot or by auto to attend to post office business. I notice many of them glancing at us, then looking away without acknowledgment. I feel a bit conspicuous sitting there but the uneasiness passes.

The woman wearing pale pink pants doesn’t look away. She crosses from the other side of the street and then walks straight over to sit beside me, smiling at the dog who rearranges herself to sit on the woman’s shoes.

We talk awhile there in the shade of the tree whose leaves hover over the bench. It’s nice.

Her name is Beatrice, she says. ‘Like the milk.’ She smiles, her brown eyes friendly and a little mischievous. We talk about the dog, her gentle elder beauty.

We talk about the weather. Beatrice says she’s glad it’s been pretty warm lately.

She points to a building down the block and says that’s where she’s been sleeping, between a wall and a big green dumpster. ‘Out of the wind.’ I ask her a few questions. She shrugs and laughs, petting the dog once more before getting up to leave. She tells me it’s not too bad once you get naked and pull your sleeping bag real close all around you.

Dewberry Fundraiser To Feature Jimmy The Janitor

A small group of about 10 volunteers called the Dewberry Hall Society are hoping to literally build on laughter for their upcoming fundraiser featuring East Coast comedian Jimmy the Janitor on Friday, November 20.

“We saw a need for some upgrades to our hall,” said volunteer Debra Hegedus.

“In 2009 we formed a non-profit society and began fundraising,” she added.

Hegedus said that the more information they gathered, the more unlikely it seemed that the hall could be renovated.

The group decided the needs of the community would be met through the construction of a functional larger building

that could accommodate a stage.

“We decided on a 60 x 112 building,” said Hegedus. “The budget for the new hall is $700,000...we are about $100,000 away from our goal.”

In 2014 the shell of the building was erected and construction resumed this spring.

“We now have the cement on the floor, the building is all insulated, the interior walls and stage are all framed up, and the drywall is on the ceiling of the building.

We are now working on getting heat put into the building,” said Hegedus. “We are hoping to be done in the next three to four months.”

Part of the proceeds from Jimmy the Janitor’s show will go toward the group’s

fundraising goal.

“Ticket sales are going really well. We’re hoping to sell just over 200 tickets – that’s what our seating will allow at the gym.”

Jimmy first performed in Dewberry in 2011.

“When we had him here last time, everybody that was there really enjoyed him. We sold 204 tickets; we made around $3,000 total profit so we’re hoping for that again. He is so good. We really enjoy him.”

Jimmy’s alter-ego is broadcaster Sandy Gillis who was born and raised in Cape Breton, and is the oldest of 10 children. He was drawn to a career in radio. It was while managing a radio station in Moncton that he created his Jimmy the Janitor character in 1987.

Dewberry fans can expect Jimmy to draw on his lengthy career for material as he will be performing some of his comedy gems that date back to 1992.

He will also be performing new material everyone can relate to such as, the joy of self check-outs, a surprise at Service Canada and passwords you can’t remember.

The show is being billed as “Good Clean Comedy” that has a broad range of appeal; it is recommended for ages 14 and up.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Dewberry School Auditorium on Friday, November, 20. Tickets are $30. There will be a light lunch at intermission. Tickets are on sale now at Dewberry Data Service.

‘Straightjacket’ Artist Showcases Abstract Style

The ‘Straightjacket Art Works’ exhibition showcasing 24 paintings by local artist Allan Wilson is currently on display at the Vermilion Public Library for the month of November.

Wilson is a self taught artist with a style that is very abstract.

“I don’t really have a method or reason.

It’s just a very free form of art.”

The exhibition consists of abstract paintings using acrylic, liquid, spray paint and other mixed mediums.

Wilson works as the Planning and Development Officer for the Town of Vermilion.

“I guess because my job is very structured and by the book my art is my release, also with the kids everything is schedule driven so it’s also a stress reliever for me.”

Wilson said that there are no hidden meanings intended in the abstract pieces.

“I like to hear the dif ferent reactions people have about what they see.

I might see something and someone else will see something completely different. I sort of play it so that sometimes they turn out to look like something.”

Wilson says he always liked art and had an interest in it.

“One day I just set up a studio in my garage and started winging it. I just do it because I love it, simply to fulfill my desire to create.”

The artist experiments with different colours using liquid acrylic paints and tools that include spatulas, rubber gloves and tin foil.

“Sometimes I like to stay up late and paint when the kids are in bed. Sometimes it is mood driven.”

From classic country and old time fiddle to gypsy jazz and jazz, classical violin, and French Canadian songs complete with clogging, The Pelletier Family with Friends will deliver a musical experience like no other on Saturday, Dec. 5. at the Alumni Hall in Vermilion.

Freddie, Sheila, Clint and Thea Pelletier on guitars and vocals, with fiddlerDaniel Gervais and upright bassist Keith Rempel— each person bringing a unique perspective due to their diverse interests and musical styles—are a blend of the Pelletier Family and gypsy jazz group, Hot Club Edmonton.

The chemistry between father and son (Freddie and Clint) on guitar is quite incredible as is the vocal harmony between Sheila and Thea. As Hot Club Edmonton, Daniel on violin and Clint on

guitar will mimic the incredible talents of Stephan Grapelli and Django Rheinhardt with infectious gypsy jazz of the 40s.

Keith’s upright bass is added to complement the sound. Freddie has previously played guitar for country music great, Ferlin Husky and toured extensively with Ian Tyson. Sheila was previously part of a group that won a Women of Distinction Award in Music, and Hot Club Edmonton is a recent WCMA award winner.

Legion Visits Schools With Remembrance Day Message For Students

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion visited V.E.S, St. Jerome’s and J.R. Robson on November 10 to honour Canadian Veterans and the present Canadian military who continue to serve.

Guest speaker Legion District Commander, Major John F. Mahon (retired) visited from Wainwright and spoke to the students at J.R. Robson School about Canada’s role in the First and Second World Wars.

“The Memory project is designed so that you young folks never forget,” said Major Mahon to a packed gym the day before Remembrance Day. The Memory Project is a nationwide bilingual project that connects Veterans and Canadian forces personnel with the opportunity to share their stories with Canadians in classrooms and community forums.

“We have a pretty cushy life here in Canada and this is what it cost,” Major Mahon told students as he pointed at images of soldiers in trenches in France from the First World War in a presentation.

Students from all schools took time in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day to learn about its significance. They also created artwork and made wreaths.

The poem In Flanders Fields written

by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was recited for students by J.R. Robson teacher Lorne Maier. Maier told students how Lieutenant Colonel McCrae gave a voice to the thousands of young men who sacrificed their young lives.

“At the age of 41, McCrae enrolled with the Canadian Expeditionary Force following the outbreak of the First World War. He had the option of joining the medical corps because of his training and age, but he volunteered instead to join a fighting unit

as a gunner and medical officer. It was his second tour of duty in the Canadian military.

The 96th consecutive Remembrance Day in Vermilion was met with good weather and a good turnout as wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph by local organizations, government officials, various military representatives, businesses, and the public on Nov. 11.

The Parade of Colours procession led by the Cadets and the RCMP, left the Legion at 10:45 a.m. and arrived at the Cenotaph for the laying of the wreaths and two minutes of silence to remember all those who have served. Two CF18 fighter jets flew over the Cenotaph shortly after 11 a.m.

This was followed by a service at the Elks Hall led by Master of Ceremonies, Comrade Wayne Freestone, Past Chairman Alberta Northwest Territories Command, Royal Canadian Legion.

Greetings on behalf of the Town of Vermilion, thanked everyone for attending and honouring the veterans and stated that it is because of them we enjoy so much freedom in our country.

“We are fortunate to be Canadians and have the freedoms that we have,” said MacDuff. “We can speak our minds and basically do what we want,” he added. “We will remember.”

This was followed by the reading of a written Greeting by Doug Stewart, on behalf of Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA, Dr. Richard Starke, who was attending Remembrance Day services in Lloydminster.

Past and present members from various wars and conflicts, as well as four Second World War veterans, 94-year-old Elwood Hill, 94-year-old Ken Taylor, 98-year-old Charles Blackford, and 90-year-old John Karwandy were recognized for their service to Canada.

Sergeant Kevin Kullbisky CD 3rd Canadian Division, who is originally from Vermilion, provided the Address for the service and recounted his career in the Canadian Armed Forces and his deployment to Bosnia. Sergeant Kullbisky said while there are many things he wants to remember about his time serving, he added,

“We must always remember the brave Canadians of the past and show our support to the thousands of members of the Canadian Armed Forces who continue to serve their country in uniform and risk making the ultimate sacrifice. We will remember them,” said Kullbisky.

trove of knowledge regarding trends and influences in the American bluesbased music scene dating as far back as the 1920’s, and has a story or two to tell about most of its major players.

Stories about musicians Ry Cooder, Hammie Nixon, Hambone Willie Newbern, and Sleepy John Estes and places like Southern California, Alberta (where he has resided for the past couple of decades), the Mississippi Delta and Ripley, Tenn. blended seamlessly with Williams’ musical style.

“The Delta is the richest place musically in America and the poorest place; it’s like the third world. There’s these little wood framed houses and people make a diddley bow on the side of their house and the whole house is a resonating chamber, it’s the most amazing thing,” said Williams. “On a quiet day, depending on where you are in the Delta, you can hear someone playing for about a mile.”

In 2014 he won the distinguished International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee in two categories; Best Solo/Duo act and Best Guitarist.

Only two other Canadians have been awarded this distinction in the contest’s 30-year history.

He lightheartedly joked about the cigar box guitar he received as his first place prize in the contest, saying it cost about $20 to make. But when he played a Sleepy John Estes number on it, the cigar box guitar sounded priceless.

Williams per formed a number of songs from his previous CD, Blue Highway with tracks inspired by a musical movement known as Pachuco. “ M ex i c a n m u s i c i s t h e c o r e o f Southern California and Texas music.

It has always been there. When I was 8-years-old I went to the old Mexican heart of downtown Los Angeles.

I saw these two guys playing in front of a restaurant; it stopped me in my tracks. One of the two guys playing was Lalo Guerrero, one of the creators of Pachuco music.”

Williams said they were the first urban Mexican hipsters with their own style of dressing in Zoot suits and their own language, Chale, which is Spanish slang.

Williams added that as a Southern Californian he is often misunderstood when he speaks Spanish in Mexico and Cuba and at times feels like the definition of Winston Churchill’s famous joke about Americans, “We are separated by a common language.”

There is no such misunderstanding, however when Williams is playing his guitar and singing.

“Music is a language of its own.

Players from different corners of the earth, who don’t speak each other’s languages, can communicate through it. That’s a pretty amazing thing,” said Williams.

Students at VES spent time on Nov. 6 packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Many students and staff brought items to contribute, as well as a twoonie to help with shipping costs. We were able to assemble 73 boxes as a school.

November 6 and 7 was the annual student drama production at VES. 25 talented students eagerly performed “ Witc hes vs Pr in c es ses ”. It was a tale of three witches who wrought wrongs with woe. The audience was in stitches as these witches played trick after trick. Friday night’s performance had a dinner theatre (catered

auction, and Saturday’s 2:00 performance was a dessert theatre with a delicious assor tment. All proceeds of this production go to VES to have special performances brought to our school. Thanks to those who bought tickets, helped set up and clean up, donated silent auction items, provided table centerpieces; the actors and their parents for the dedication to this performance; Mrs. Doherty, Mrs. MyShaniuk, Miss Ishaq, Miss Berg, and Miss Thomas for directing; and freedrama.net for allowing us to use their play for the production.

On November 12, teachers had the opportunity to go to Wainwright High School for the ATA Professional Learning Day. There were many sessions offered to teachers and we had the option of choosing something that matched our interests or subject area. We thank our PD representative, Miss Thomas, for helping to organize this day.

With Christmas coming up, we are preparing for our Christmas Concerts.

This year, we are looking for donations to help us with props and decorations.

The kinders are learning the capital letters by printing them, singing about them and learning the sounds that they make. In Math the kinders can quickly sort by size, color and shape and are beginning to create patterns.

The Grade 1’s are in full swing! Migration, hibernation, and adaptation have been the “BIG” words these last few weeks. The Grade 1’s are experts in talking about the seasonal changes that occur in Fall.

In language arts the Grade 2’s have started to learn how to write a ‘bold beginning,’ ‘mighty middle,’ and an ‘exciting ending,’ for stories. They read, “A Busy Year,” to help them understand all the important parts a story has to include.

The Grade 3 students are learning about what global citizenship is and how different organizations help those in need in social studies. It has been a busy two months in school!

Community members, staf f and students of St. Jerome’s gathered together on Tuesday, November 10 to take time to remember those who sacrificed their lives so we can have the freedoms we do. The service began with the cadets, many of them St. Jerome students, and veterans being bagpiped in.

Tenille Chase and Brianne Wheat did a wonderful job leading the service helping the students to reflect on the significance of the sacrifices made by soldiers and loved ones. Cheradyn Bessette and Sadie Granigan led “O Canada”, after a prayer by veteran, Mr. A Bell, we watched a touching

students have written a letter to a student there. They are each writing two letters as their class has 24 students and we only have 13. Mrs. Amero is writing to their teacher and they hope to hang out in the Google hangout shortly so that the students can talk and see each other.

There might even be a reading challenge between the two classes.

The Grade 6’s have wrapped up their first unit in Math and are well into their next unit. This unit’s focus is still on numbers but we are looking further into numbers’ factors and multiples, and how to determine whether a number is prime or composite. Finally in this unit we will discuss integers and learn the rules for order of operations.

The junior boys’ volleyball team have been busy this season playing exhibition games, BTPS northern finals, and tournaments. Multiple players came and joined the team since the beginning of the session, ended with a tally of ten.

Through their hard work, dedication and commitment of coming together to work

as a team they were able to improve their skills and took home a bronze from the tournament in Innisfree.

Mannville Preschool Society is preparing for their annual Comedy Night on Saturday, February 20. Tickets go on sale

by Ethan Campbell. We then observed twominutes of silence and then students from each class proceeded forward and laid a wreath at the front of the gym. The service ended with the cadets and veterans parading out. Thank you to Mr. Allan MacMillan and the Student Council for organizing this meaningful and reflective Remembrance Day Ceremony.

Congratulations to the Vermilion Marauders Football team for their win over Fort McMurray and wishing them all good luck in their upcoming games. We would like to especially congratulate all the St. Jerome

boys who play on the Marauders football team, Daniel Hryciuk, Axel Myshak, Noah Sanson, Chandler Nelson, Pierre Brousseau, Scott Zielinski, and Cameron Bartley Congratulations to the Sr. Girls and Boys Volleyball teams as they both won districts this past week and will be representing St. Jerome’s at zones on November 20 and 21.

The girls will travel to Bonnyville and the boys will be in Two Hills. Good luck!

This Thursday, November 19, High School students will be competing in a “Lip Sync Battle”. We encourage students to

enter their bands and for all student to wear their favorite “Concert T-shirt” on this day.

Jets Crushed By Rock

Friday the 13th was a good night for the Vermilion Rock as they crushed the Paradise Valley Jets by a score of 11 - 0 at the Vermilion Stadium. The Rock dominated the Jets from the outset.

By the time the second period rolled around the score was 5-0 for the Rock. Minutes into the second period, the Jets were scrambling in front of their own net and created an opportunity for Steve Simmons (15) to dig the puck out and score an unassisted goal at 17:28. By the end of the second period, the Rock was ahead by a score of 8-0. The momentum continued into the third period resulting in the huge victory for the Rock. The next home game is Friday, Nov. 20 against the Kitscoty Monarchs at 8 p.m.

It was a week of high’s and low’s for the Tigers last week. The biggest high was a 2-1 double OT win over the Lloydminster Bandits on Friday, November 6. A large home crowd enjoyed plenty of scoring chances and highlight reel saves by both goaltenders. Nolan Blair and Ryan VanGenderen led the way for the Tigers. Danton Brooks made 36 stops in the victory.

The Jr B’s and the hockey community lost a former Tiger President and current County of Vermilion River Councillor last week. Dave

Gamracy passed away suddenly and the community is mourning his loss. The Vermilion Jr B Tigers want to pass along our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

The Onion Lake Border Chiefs rolled into town on November 8 having played their 3rd game in 5 days. They looked unstoppable on route to a 6-1 thumping of the yellow and black. The league’s top scorer Regan Yew added to his total with 2 goals. Carter Myhovich had the lone goal for the Tigers.

St. Jeromes’s Spartans Win Gold

The St Jerome’s Spartans Girls Volleyball team headed off to the Rumble in the Rock Volleyball Tournament in Rocky Mountain House. The tournament was a 20 team tournament of 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A schools from across Alberta In Pool play, the St Jerome’s Spartans defeated the Rimbey JV Spartans 25-13 and 25-10, split the sets with Memorial Composite High School Marauders from Stony Plain 25-22 and 14-25.

We then played the Three Hills Royals and split the sets with them 23-25 and 25-10. We finished off pool play with a pair of wins against the Lacombe Composite High School Rams 25-14 and 25-20, finishing second in the pool with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses. This placed the St Jerome’s Spartans into the A side playoffs,

where we faced off against the Vegreville Composite High Schools Cougars, and managed to defeat them n three sets with scores 23-25, 25-23 and 15-9. This was the first time the St Jerome’s Spartans have managed to defeat the Cougars in many seasons.

Our Semifinal playof f game was against the Rimbey Senior Spartans, where we managed to defeat them 25-19 and 25-19. This lead us to the Gold Medal game for the A Side Playoffs against the Spirit River Renegades In true Gold Medal game fashion, the game went to three sets, with the Renegades winning the first set 25-19, and the Spartans winning the second set 25-23.

Marauders Bow To Sabres In Provincial Football Quarterfinal

Sometimes the underdogs win, sometimes the rankings hold true.

At half time Saturday, it appeared the fourth ranked Marauders might have a shot at defeating the number one Sexsmith Sabres with a 14-13 lead. It even seemed the home team might match the Peace Bowl runner-ups touchdown for touchdown when they both scored on their first plays of the third quarter.

The Sabres executed four majors to the Marauder’s one in the next 22 minutes finishing with a 48-27 victory and a berth in the semi-finals next week in Ardrossan.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Marauders jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 75-yard punt return by Donovan Yaceyko, the first of three touchdowns he would score. Less than two minutes later, Brayden Chilibeck found Noah Sanson deep for a 56-yard pass and run touchdown.

Sexsmith would reply with a touchdown just before the three minute warning and again with just 26 seconds left in the half.

Their attempted convert on that TD was blocked, and they trailed by a point when the first half ended.

On the first play after the second half kickoff, the Sabres Riley Stark scored his second touchdown on a 70 yard run. After the convert, Sexsmith was up 20-14 after just 35 seconds of play. Tanner Throndson fielded the kickoff and brought the ball to the Marauder 47. On the next play,Yaceyko found daylight and outran the defense for a 63-yard major. The convert put the Marauders back ahead by a point, 21-14.

Hayden Usenik recovered a fumble on the next series, but the Marauders weren’t able to move the ball turning it over on downs when a third down gamble was inches short. The Sabres engineered a four-play scoring drive aided by a Marauder objectionable conduct penalty at 5:50. At 2:38 Stark scored again with a Tyson Mastrodimos convert for a 34-21 lead.

There was no scoring in the fourth quarter until the last 2:07. Both Sabre touchdowns came after interceptions and they led 48-21 with 1:27 left on the clock.

Yaceyko returned the kickof f 80 yards running around and through the Sexsmith special teams unit and eventually out legging them down the sideline.

The Marauders attempted a two-point

convert, but weren’t successful on the pass attempt.

Marauders points after: Over half of the team are grade 12s, leaving a lot of spots open on next year’s roster…Mayor Bruce MacDuff won the 50/50 draw and split his winnings with the team…Having

a measurement is fairly rare, but there were four measurements in this game…

Although there was no scoring in the first quarter, the Marauders did attempt two field goals. A 49-yarder was just wide and the 35-yard attempt by Yaceyko was blocked.

Donovan Yaceyko is pushed out of bounds early in the semi-final game by Sabre Kegan Schroeder with Tyson Mastrodimos just behind. Yaceyko scored three of the four Marauder touchdowns on a 75-yard punt return, 56-yard pass reception and 80-yard kickoff return.
