Poppy Campaign Kicks Off Remembrance Day Events

Every year the Royal Canadian Legion conducts the Poppy Campaign to honour those who serve and to raise funds in support of Veterans and their families.

The campaign runs from the last Friday in October to Remembrance Day. Last Wednesday, Royal Canadian Legion President Don Henry presented Mayor Bruce MacDuff with a poppy to mark the beginning of the Poppy Campaign in Vermilion.

“It’s so important to honour this event and remember that we live in a democratic society and that we live in the best country on earth,” said Mayor Bruce MacDuff.

“Wear a poppy, attend a ceremony, and show your recognition for those who gave their lives for our freedom!”

“We have a lot of veterans here in this community and nobody knows who they are or what they have done,” said

Pumpkin Carving Fun At VPL

The Vermilion Public Library held a Pumpkin Carving Contest and 20 entries were dropped off on Oct. 29. Judging took place over two days and the winners were announced on Oct. 30. Winner of the Most Creative category was Pacman Pumpkin by Cydney Rodh and Rebecca Evans. The Best Overall winner was Angry Pumpkin by Vermilion Outreach School. The three winners will receive a $20 prize coupon to Boston Pizza.

College Park Teams Up With Interior Design Students

The weather cooperated for the first Vermilion Buick Drive For Your Students event at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Oct. 30, that saw College Park Motors in Vermilion team up with Lakeland College Interior Design students to raise money for the students’ field trip.

Student organizer, Sarah Johre said her second-year class was faced with the challenge of raising money for their annual design field trip to Toronto, so they decided to approach College Park Motors in Vermilion for help.

“I’m from Lloydminster. One day I saw all these cars parading around and I asked my dad what was going on? He told me it was a test-drive event Westbridge GMC had to help the students of Bishop Lloyd raise money. We thought this would be a good way to raise money for our program and we approached College Park,” said Johre.

Larry Alward of College Park Motors, said this was the first time the dealership has participated in the Buick Drive For Your Students campaign.

“We have sister stores that ran it in Meadow Lake and Lloydminster, and then the College girls approached me because they were looking for a way to raise money for their field trip.”

The Buick Drive For Your Students event donates $20 toward the College’s program for every test drive taken, up to $10,000.

Alyssa Alward of College Park Motors said they were aiming to get 500 people out to test drive the 22 Buick vehicles they had on site which would result in the $10,000 donation to the students from Buick.

“It’s also about awareness of the brand,” said Larry Alward. “There’s a

stigmatism about the Buick that it was your grandpa’s car. It’s not. There is so much new technology in these cars now.”

Richard and Bev Smith from Kitscoty came out to the event to test drive a new Buick. They already have a Buick but Richard Smith said, “It’s not like this one.”

GM Canada Representatives were also on site for the event and GM Representative Erik Richard said the new Buicks are equipped with OnStar and are compatible with Apple and Android technology.

Timur Erzin of GM Canada said it is very easy to use too.

“Just plug and play,” said Erzin.

Richard said this initiative is a great way for local dealerships to get involved and suppor t their communities, as students are always looking for opportunities to raise money for their extracurricular activities.

The second-year Interior Design students augmented the fundraiser with a hot dog and bake sale and proceeds from these sales will also go toward the Toronto field trip.

“We have a large class,” said Johre.

“There are 20 students and it will cost about $600 per student to go on the trip.”

College Park Representative, Alyssa Alward said the exact amount that will be donated to the College will be presented at a later date, but there was a steady flow of registrants starting at 10 a.m. until the event ended at 7 p.m.

Qualified test drive participants were eligible to win a door prize with a value of over $800 donated by various businesses in the community.

“It’s awesome how the community has supported us. We’re so grateful,” said Johre.

On Friday, October 3 0, J. R. was haunted with all kinds of creatures, characters, themes, and objects as nearly all the students were in costume.

In the last two classes of the day, Pirate Crews hosted a ghoulish number of festive events including a costume contest, Halloween movie, ring toss, pumpkin bowling, donut-eating contest, Mystery Box, pumpkin seed squirting contest, floor hockey, basketball and volleyball.

Junior high volleyball athletes had a busy week last week! On Wednesday, October 28, the girls were in Marwayne competing in Highway 16 Playdowns for the entire day. Julia Seymour, Elaina Howard, Meaghan Stewart, Sydney Joa, Sydney Crowe, Emily Elder and Raelene Lupul attended. On the same day junior boys hosted Northerns at J. R.. This year›s team includes Azro Abuzukar, Kent Jack-

son, Carson Livingstone, Jackson Livingstone, Mark Livingstone, Connor Lychak, Quentin Rehman, Logan Schmahl, Ty Stenhouse and Jayden Young. They were victorious!

The Vermilion Football team won 37 33 on home ground on Saturday, October 24, 2015. Their victory in the consolation final led them to a game in and against Cold Lake last weekend in hopes to progress to the Provincial qualifying round.

The year’s first round of parent-teacher interviews was a success. Many parents came out to meet and chat with their children’s teachers about academic and personal successes and goals. If anyone is interested in arranging a meeting, you are welcome to phone the school at 780-853-4177.

Grade 12 Marauder, Cameron Webb, was recently invited “to pursue a postsecondary education at the University of Alberta while competing as a member of the varsity cross-country and track and field programs” in Edmonton! After his recent running performance in Grande

‘Hiring Basics’ a skills workshop on recruitment and selection was held for employers, managers and business owners at Lakeland College on October 28.

The workshop was hosted by the President and founder from Hotte Training, Kathryn Hotte, in conjunction with the Rural Alberta Business Centre.

Having facilitated training in over 16 countries, Hotte introduced herself saying she has found that her creative way of adding fun while still achieving the transfer of knowledge strikes a chord with

people from every culture.

Hotte has had 12 plus years experience in training with eight years of international experience.

Hotte advised her workshop participants that in order to have successful recruitment strategies you need to be aware of current day realities and challenges. “ So me of to d ay ’s c halleng es to consider include the Baby Boomer generation; people who were born between the years 1946 – 1964, a huge amount of these people are now retiring,” said Hotte.

“Global competition with the internet today has made the world a much smaller

place. People can apply for jobs from different ends of the country and from overseas for job positions.

“Shifting loyalties are a new reality in today’s world. People don’t stay at jobs anymore for 30 years, on average you are lucky if you can hold an employee for five years,” said Hotte.

Hotte advised employers to look closely at employee turnover.

“It can be very costly and something that every employer needs to look at. You have to take into consideration the cost of advertising, lost productivity during training, customer dissatisfaction every time you hire a new employee and your time!” explained Hotte.

“People don’t really stay for the money.

It’s the managers and the business

owners that set the office tone.”

Hotte advised employers about hiring strategies. “You have to know your company and your hiring needs. You have to know what you already have and know the work,” Hotte advised.

“As an employer you have to keep your eye on the Labour Market and your talent sources and look at your options, measure and evaluate!”

The workshop focused on making employers realize that it is more worth their while to be an employer of choice.

“Make them want you! By providing incentives for your employees like offering job security and rewarding work, it makes for a better team environment and more positive employee-manager relationships.”

If you were asked to picture family violence, how would you? If you were asked to put forth a definition of family violence, how would you define it?

Most people picture family violence as a woman or child curled up in a corner beaten black and blue and would define it as the physical assault against a member of your family. But, in fact, according to the Canadian Department of Justice, the definition of family violence is when someone uses abusive behaviour to control and/or harm a member of their family, or someone with whom they have an intimate relationship.

Did you know that family violence is not only the physical aspect? Family violence includes many different forms of violence including physical, emotional, sexual, financial as well as neglect carried out by family members or intimate partners. A person or persons suffering from family violence may not be suffering from just one form; it can include a single act of violence or numerous acts consistently that form a pattern such as the physical aspect along with emotional or financial aspects or they could be experiencing all forms of violence in the same situation.

or tying them down can all be considered physical abuse.

Sexual touching or activity without consent even from your spouse is sexual abuse, forcing someone to commit unsafe or humiliating sexual acts is sexual abuse.

You may not think it, but it is!

Constant yelling, criticism, insults, destroying an individual’s belongings, making threats, name calling and threatening to hurt yourself, children or pets are all types of emotional abuse.

Taking someone’s money, withholding money to control someone, pressuring someone to sign documents such as wills are types of financial abuse.

Not providing the necessities of life such as food, shelter, clothing and failing to prevent harm to a family member are all considered types of neglect.

One of the most surprising types of violence to me, while researching about family violence, was intimate partner violence. The Canadian Department of Justice said intimate partner violence is violence or abuse that happens: within a marriage, common-law or dating relationship and at any time during a relationship, including while it is breaking down, or after it has ended where one person may want to get power or complete control over their partner. The person looking to obtain the power could tell the other person what to wear, when and where to go out, who that person can spend their time with, when that person can talk to their family and friends. As a society, we often think that because we are in a relationship with another person, we have the

right to control their actions somewhat, whether it is how they dress or who they hang out with.

The problem here is the excessive control of another person’s thoughts, actions, and freedoms. It is abuse to strip away a person’s ability to think and act for themselves; it is abuse to control a person to the point they can no longer make decisions on how they want to dress. Think about it, for just one second, would you want to be told when you could speak to your family, would you want to be told you could not wear a certain article of clothing or when or if you could see your friends? We as a society have taught ourselves that this is acceptable behaviour and it’s not!!

Family violence often starts out as a push here and a poke there or a word said here, and a word said there and it can quickly escalate into severe violence and even death.

I wish I had the space to go into great depth regarding family violence as it is not just the individual experiencing the violence, all members of society are affected by family violence, we just do not realize it.

Our children who are growing up in homes where they witness or are a victim of family violence are at risk for lifelong effects. You may think a child who doesn’t bare witness to the actual act of violence is not affected by it, but they are. They are not blind or stupid, they see the bruises, they hear the voices whether it is yelling or crying, and it is an image and a sound they will carry all their lives! Children who grow up in family violence are at a greater risk of abusing themselves. They are at a greater

risk of developing emotional, behavioural and developmental issues.

In a 2010 survey, there were almost 99,000 victims of family violence in Canada that were reported to the police. And experts suggest the numbers may be much higher as many individuals affected by violence (such as men who are usually too embarrassed to report abuse) do not report the abuse or are unaware that the treatment they are receiving is classified as abuse.

Also, from a Canada-wide police database at least 65 of those cases were spousal homicide. To me, those numbers are staggering.

The economic impact of family violence is also astonishing. A study conducted by the Department of Justice Canada estimates the cost of just one type of family violence - spousal violence to be about $7.4 billion a year!! The breakdown of those numbers are as follows: Victims: $ 6.0 billion in costs associated with victims seeking medical attention, their loss in wages, damages to property and pain and suffering and loss of life.

Third parties involved: More than $890 million for social service operating cost the Justice system cost: are hovering around $545 million and the criminal justice system.

So there you have it, THE BRUTAL TRUTH! November is Family Violence Awareness month, and I am trying to help raise awareness of family violence. If you or someone you know is suffering in silence from family violence I am begging you to please seek help; no one deserves to be abused by anyone, let alone a member of your family!

Atco Electric Donates To E.H. Walter School

Atco Electric came out to E.H. Walter School yesterday to give a donation of $10,000 towards the new gym for the new E.H. Walter School Build. Perry Floen, Customer Service Supervisor from Atco Electric came out to bring the

donation. Atco’s involvement with Paradise Valley has been ongoing since 1945, and that giving back to the rural centers is important to them.

We are currently sitting at $1,331,000.

We only need approximately $30,000 more in donations to reach our goal of $1,360,000.

The last week of October and there is a little frost on the pumpkins this morning; I imagine those pumpkins are a little mushy now as there have been many frosty mornings lately.

Yesterday morning was just a tad frosty also, getting up at 4:00 a.m. for bowhunting it wasn’t all that bad or frosty, even once at my ground blind low in calm and still valley it wasn’t all that bad.

However, as the sun starts to rise, icicles form on my eyelids and are hanging off my arrows. Mother Nature has a funny sense of humor as ironically sunrise is the coldest time of the day.

Standing or sitting there in the dark, as still as one can we cool down. Then, like ancient peoples we pray for the sun to rise, as that sun just peeks over the eastern horizon, OMG the temperature drops.

The temperature can drop five degrees or more such as in the low laying Valley; just so happens to be where I was, and then I swear the sun got stuck on the horizon and froze in time. I wanted to pick up a big ole tree and run to the horizon, and pry that big warm red sucker up, but I was shivering too hard, and it got colder and now my feet were numb.

An interesting natural process, as heat rises and sucks down colder air it is what happens at sunrise. If one were to take an electric temperature gauge you might find

Thank you everyone for your support for the Scholastic Book Fair. The winners for the Family Event Door Prize were Wren Bardoel and Mrs. Tomkin’s (Grade 4A classroom library).

They each received $25 in books. Proceeds from the book fair will provide new articles for our library and special events like author visits.

VES was very fortunate to host accomplished author, Sigmund Brouwer, through the Taleblazers program supplied by Young Alberta Book Society. This program organizes Alberta authors, illustrators, and story tellers to travel throughout Alberta during the month of October to promote and increase literacy. Sigmund Brouwer put on an awesome presentation with his theme of “Rock & Roll Literacy”. He incorporated music into his presentation, which grabbed the attention of all, and kept the enthusiasm high while pointing out key factors in writing stories.

Remembering my wise grandfather’s strange, at the time advice, “If your feet are cold put on a warm hat and scarf.” I put up my hoodie and took out a warm neck warmer and soon the feeling came back into my feet. I was prepared and dressed well enough for the temperature other than my walking boots, maybe overdressed for all but my feet, even though the boots I wore had 1000 grams of Thinsulate insulation.

I must have frozen my feet as a child because they get cold easy, and once my feet are cold I am done my adventure it seems, that is until I can re-warm them, which is usually with walking.

One saver while outdoors, expressly such as in this scenario, other than my 100 below winter boots that I didn’t have were the pocket “Little Hotties” hand warmers I carried.

The hand warmer packs found near everywhere in Canada are and minimal very comforting and can be lifesaving in hypothermic conditions. These little warm-

They are environmentally safe, natural, and charcoal activated, a scent killer used in some clothing, and is air activated using safe, natural chemicals.

These little packs can reach warmth or hot temperatures up to 74C, and burn unprotected skin if caution is not used, most radiate nice 57C warmth in a pocket or gloves.

I carry the large packs the size of one’s hand and the smaller ones that fit nicely in your hand, the large ones can radiate heat up to 18 hrs while smaller hand warmers radiate warmth for up to eight hours.

Even when icicles are hanging from your nose, one of the smaller ones in each pocket of your jacket warming your hands will keep you toasty, or if you’re like me all but for your feet.

I am in the process of purchasing a new product just for my frozen little piggy toes, a product by ThermaCELL, the mosquito repellent people, called ThermaCELL Heated Insoles; I have been watching this product this past year. Watching for reviews and waiting for them to work out any issues as many new products experiences, these boot insoles slip into your boots like a sport or comfort cushion shoe insole. The insoles can be electronically heated via rechargeable components when plugged into an electrical socket; however they are completely wireless after charging and come with a remote.

Now, what outdoorsman seriously can resist warm feet and a remote to boot, [pun intended]. The only downside is they are quite expensive from $129.99 to $150.00…

how much waste was being thrown out during the week at lunchtime. Students discovered that over the course of four days, over 2000 items of waste were put in the garbage or recycled at lunchtime.

Students brainstormed ideas to reduce the amount of wastes we produce and made many suggestions, including buying things that are not wrapped in extra packaging; not using foam or plastic cups; buying in bulk; using both sides of paper; selling or donating clothes to a charity or Community Closet; using rechargeable batteries; mending clothing; fixing things up; using a compost.

VES is happy to have an eager group of Grade 5-6 school patrollers who are out patrolling some of our crosswalks. Please watch for them before and after school, as they help get students across the street safely. We are very proud of those students who have committed to getting here a bit early and/or staying a little late to help their schoolmates get to school and get home safely. Just a reminder to drivers: Students hold out their stop signs, pause to make eye contact with you to ensure you are aware to stop, and then have pedestrians cross.

The Grade 4 classes went on a field trip to the Vermilion Waste Transfer Station, Community Closet, Bottle Depot, and Recycling Station as part of their Science Unit. Students learned the different methods of waste disposal that Vermilion uses.

The semi-truck was pulling out from the Transfer Station hauling our garbage away to Riley. They learned examples of common toxic wastes and saw how various substances are sorted for recycling.

They saw the sorted tire stacks, metal pile,

but I don’t care! Watch for the review.

The Miss Pickles Chronicles Miss Pickles is a unique pup, Roxanne my wife has other words for her, most I cannot print here…just the other day I took the day off and went hunting.

First thing in the morning, greeted by hyper slobbers at the door, I gotta tickle the belly and tell her she is a good dog, and then lock the house door and tell her she is a good girl for staying home before I leave.

When the wife came home, the door was wide open, concerned she didn’t know if she should call the RCMP or bravely sneak in quietly not knowing exactly what was going on.

What was going on was evident from all the outdoor farm kitties in the house, all the cat food gone, and a loud snoring coming from “my” couch! Yup, there was Miss Pickles with all foot legs in the air sound asleep on “my” couch.

Apparently I forgot to lock the door; distracted by the “unique one,”…now this door latch is different from the shop door handle that she opens with ease when she wishes, but judging by the dog size 12 paw prints on the door…she figured this one out now!

Come fall and harvest finished, the feed nicely stacked and graineries all filled and closed from the weather, you felt that feeling. Especially if the crop had managed to have been brave enough to hold out against the rigours of the season and those calves were weaned and done bawling for their moms.

You could look out across your yard and fields and see that everything was ready for winter that was certain to arrive soon!! By that time of the year, my market hogs were nearly ready for their final trip, and the lucky gilts were penned separately to ready them for the visit from the boy pig delegated for the occasion!!

It felt so good to know you had a bin full of potatoes down in the cold-room, and your freezer was full of the handy-work from the garden, yes a satisfactory feeling!

not achieved by accident by any means, every aspect of those successes came because you first had the abilities to put forth your skills and experience to help achieve those goals. Yes, you had to plan ahead and make sure those piggies were born at the proper season.

Same thing with calving time, you made sure to keep the bull penned at least nine months before you wanted calves to arrive!!

You also had to have planned what seed you needed and have it cleaned and ready, hopefully of a variety you trusted to perform best on your farm. Things like that didn’t just happen by accident.

Remember, experience and the ability to put it to GOOD use!!

We had to learn to listen to the pioneers and at the same time keep an eye open for any new idea or contraption that came over the horizon.

You know, in the old times, grain varieties came from countries different from here in soil and season and our old folks learned what worked and what didn’t – the hard way.

They learned which breed of cattle could best rustle and graze and get fat and stay in good shape through the severely cold winter. Yes, and which brand of pigs could raise their young more – or less on their own in a straw pile for lacking a heated farrowing farm. Yes, as the spring turned to seeding time, you had to be careful to make certain the seeding was done to ensure a good crop, and of course, you had to know how to farm and have the soil worked and in good shape.

Remember walking the fields and taking inventory on the weeds. We had to learn about sprays and how to do that properly. There was always one challenge after another, it seemed.

All the time the crop was growing, we needed to keep track of the cows and make sure the fence had them contained.

Seemed all summer it was a rush to get the crop seeded, the haying done, that everlasting fencing done and then if you were lucky you had to get ready for harvest. My, the stress, and worry to make the harvest go as smoothly as possible made for long days whenever

Even in early times, so much depended on getting the harvest in and feed made up to last the winter. Now, so much money is involved they should make a gamble like that illegal. So, yes after all the hard work involved, combined with the experience gained from all the folks who pioneered this country and learned the lessons it taught as the seasons passed, I think we had earned the right to feel satisfied with our success.

Wouldn’t it be a wonderful turn of events if those who have been entrusted to run the affairs of our country used the lessons of history to steer a straighter course through good times and bad and not run up such debts as they seem to do. Makes you wonder how they can feel satisfied with the job they did when the country is left holding an empty bag and the hard working taxpayers have to pick up the tab. Good thing we don’t have to rely on people like that to farm the land, put up the feed and look after the stock.

I think we’d all go hungry if that were the case!!

The County of Two Hills No. 21 has received grant monies in 2015 for distribution to Community Recreation Facility Operators located within the County of Two Hills No. 21 that make their facilities available to the Two Hills County Residents and Ratepayers.

Applications for Recreation Funds may be picked up at the Two Hills County Office.

Written applications must prove need of financial assistance (in accordance with County Policy) for facility operation purposes and must be accompanied with the Facility’s Audited Annual Financial Statement (2014).

I thought my experim e nt wa s s m ar t . I t proved right my hypothesis that my high school social studies teacher was not actually reading my assignments, he was simply assigning a grade to them.

I didn‘t know or care whether or not it was just my work he handled in this way. That wasn‘t the point. My experiment---which involved sticking two completely nonsensical lines [think See Spot run fast, etc.] in the middle of a Term paper---served only to confirm my suspicions that the marks gifted me were likely determined before the finished work appeared on his desk.

The reasons eluded me. It‘s not as though I could ask him. I decided to go with this one: he was just too lazy to read all those tedious pages. I joked about him, fuelling my know-it-all teenage derision with the conclusion arrived at through my experiment and its extrapolated assumption.

We‘re pretty clever when we‘re seventeen years old. I‘ve mused more than a few times about the merits of formal

It has been three months since Voice publisher Sue Chikie discovered the great horned owl with his wing impaled on a barbed wire fence, and brought him to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society for medical attention.

It still remains uncertain whether the owl will ever fly again in the wild, but he

Teaching Imagination

education as we know it being temporarily suspended between the ages of about 14 and 20. Most of us know far too much during those years to glean any valuable knowledge from either our elders or our teachers. We‘re busy wrestling with matters associated with puberty, sorting through the steps between youthful angst and emotional blackmail, taking stock of our status among our cliquey peers, jostling for position, becoming somebodies. Experimenting.

My youth was largely a non-verbal one.

I didn‘t willingly offer comment during many class discussions. I don‘t know that I was obviously sullen. I think I was mostly present, pleasant, and attentive, possibly just not very engaged. I was definitely a daydreamer. It‘s probably because of kids like me that there are fewer windows in today‘s schools. If opportunity presents, gazers tend to look out into the world of.... whatever we imagine is floating around out there.

In retrospect, I realize it was I and not my social studies teacher who better exhibited the attributes associated with ‚lazy‘. I neither excelled nor floundered. I

floated. I may have thought myself quietly rebellious and not wanting to stand out but in so doing, I settled for mediocrity. In the haze of perceived teenage clarity, clinging to a stance of ‚anti-participant‘ can seem powerful. Along the journey between child and adulthood, we imagine the enemy everywhere. Enemy limits our freedom, forces us between boundaries, challenges us to learn that which we do not care to learn. It‘s only much later we realize our most threatening enemy resides within.

Her name is Confidence Lacking.

My social studies teacher must have known then what I could not. No doubt I could memorize significant dates and summarize historical events as well as any student regurgitating what was mandated by curriculum. Beyond that, it became personal. Perhaps he rewarded me for the only glimmer of evidence that I was learning the material he‘d delivered through impassioned lectures and readings and lively in-class discussions to which I was not party. He allowed me the latitude to respond to the material in my own way, waiving the requirement of demonstrating learning by speaking up,

Director of Wildlife, Kim Blomme said in a recent update, that the owl has been moved to a large flight pen “where he is really able to move around.”

It appears “Olaf’ has regained the gift of flight. However, because his injured wing hangs, he is still not able to fly well enough to be released, said Blomme.

“The hanging wing could indicate a loss of function in muscles, nerves or tendons. The biggest issue seems to be ‘lift’. Once he is up high, he can maintain a straight line, but getting airborne is tricky,” she added. “He needs full function for power on take-off and manoeuvrability.”

Great horned owls are non-migratory, a fact that is working in this owl’s favour as the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society can hang on to him for as long as is necessary, before releasing him back into the wild.

Educators stand as the most influential of professions, yet too often they are both unacknowledged and disrespected.

Education and those dedicated to advancing our appreciation and reverence of it are pitifully undervalued. Commerce takes precedence. The accumulation of monetary wealth, faux celebrity, and piles of shiny things are more common goals than are the pursuit of a sound ability to think, to reflect, to imagine, and to continually discover unique and satisfying ways of engaging with each other and our surroundings.

We ought salute teachers. They sustain us by stoking the fire of knowledge. They protect us from a lifestyle of drones.

“The other consideration is releasing a young owl at the start of the hardest season (winter) may not be the best plan especially one with a potential deficit so we are just wanting to make sure we have critically evaluated his overall condition prior to release. It’s been such a long haul with him that it’s tempting to claim ‘success’ when we may only be releasing him to his death,” said Blomme.

“We will likely have him for awhile.”

After digging and washing lots of carrots last week, I have been seeking new ways to enjoy them. Here is a recipe I developed for a nice carrot salad.

Carrots have several health benefits including being an excellent source of vitamin A, with 1/2 cup providing 210 percent of our daily need.

Nutrients naturally found in carrots also have been found to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, lung and colon cancer. Carrots are protective of our vision, our liver and brain.

Witches, Celebrities, Ghosts, Pr in c es ses, Warriors and a variety of other characters were seen in the hallways of St. Jerome’s on Friday, October 30. Elementary students gathered at 9:30 in the gym to celebrate October Happigrams. Mrs. Roth’s Grade 4 students entertained the students with their version of “The Monster Mash” and the Christian song, “Every Move”. Congratulations to all of the Happigram winners. In the afternoon the students met in the gym for the Annual Costume Parade before their classroom parties. Middle Level Council planned a scavenger hunt activity for the students in Grade 6-8, which had students searching throughout the school for clues. The High School Students had to guess pictures of disguised staff members in the game, “Which Witch is Which?”

On Thursday, October 22 Mrs. Roth’s Grade 4 class traveled to the Ukrainian Heritage Cultural Village for a fun filled day of exploring what life was like in rural Alberta during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Spending

An interesting study has also discovered that carrots have anti-inflammatory effects that have been found to be significant when compared to asprin and Ibuprofin.

While many vegetables are best eaten raw, carrots are one food that benefits you to cook. Steaming is the best way to prepare carrots, as it increases the nutrient availability and maintains the flavor. If you are buying your carrots at the store, be aware that unfortunately “baby carrots” are processed in a chlorine bath; making them a less healthy choice than that of regular bagged carrots.

The olive oil in the dressing helps you absorb the nutrients from the carrots and the parsley. Parsley is an excellent source

of vitamin K and a good source of vitamin C. Naturally occurring oil in parsley is protective of the lungs and helps prevent tumors.

This would be a good salad for people that smoke, to help protect their lungs.

Both the garlic and ginger also have health properties, but for this recipe the combination adds a nice flavor to this salad. I find that the honey helps emulsify the oil and lemon juice.

This recipe calls for the use of a garlic press, which is a useful utensil in obtaining a paste from the garlic and the ginger.

I like this salad as is, but I think it would also be nice with a half of a cup of walnuts and/or raisins, which would add omega 3 and resveratrol nutrients.

Carrot Salad 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons honey 2 tablespoons freshly reamed lemon or lime juice 1 clove of garlic pressed 1/2 inch piece of peeled ginger pressed 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried dill 3 cups grated carrots 1/4 cup chopped parsley In your serving bowl combine the olive oil, the honey and the lemon juice, stir in the garlic, ginger, salt pepper and dill, keep stirring until the oil blends into the lemon juice. Stir in the carrots and then the parsley.

the afternoon as Grade 4 students in 1930 was an eye opener! Upon their arrival they delivered a pail of eggs to the teacher along with a note explaining one student’s absence from school. Joining their teacher outside, the children raised the Union Jack and sang God Save the King. Not a whisper could be heard as the children entered the two-room schoolhouse and completed their deep breathing exercises, spelling test and practiced writing a friendly letter.

Imagine not being able to write with your left hand even if you are left-handed.

Sitting at attention they learned quickly to follow the teachers requests immediately or risk the teacher banging the strap on their desk! When answering math questions the children were requested to stand while delivering their answers regarding converting Roman Numerals to expanded notation and then to Arabic numbers.

Outside the teacher created two teams to play Tug A War followed by a quick game of Red Rover. It was quite a day. School on Monday in Mrs. Roth’s class is going to seem like a breeze.

seasons. Congratulations to the Jr. High Girls and Boys for their skillful play at Highway “16” Championships as both teams brought home silver. On Saturday, October 24, the Jr. Girls battled back from a tough round robin defeating F.G. Miller in the semi-finals to meet Ashmont in the finals.

The girls played well demonstrating determination and sportsmanship winning silver for the weekend. The Grade 8 girls also had a great weekend of volleyball as they won Gold in the Elk Point Tournament. The Jr. Boys were also in Elk Point and they lost out in the semi-finals. The Sr. Girls and the JV Girls both won the Consolation Championships in their respective tournaments. The Sr. Boys won their third Gold of the season at the Lloydminster Composite High Tournament. Congratulations to all of our teams.

The Sr. Boys are hosting their home tournament this weekend November 6 & 7. Come out and cheer on the Spartans.

Both kindergarten classes have had a very busy week as they visited the Fire Hall and had their Halloween Parties. The students enjoyed seeing all the equipment and suits, but they especially liked the Fire Trucks.

Thank you to Kristy Reiniger and her Ladies Volleyball team for donating the proceeds of their tournament and their winnings to our Sr. High Volleyball Programs. The Ladies team donated $2250 to the Spartans. Once a Spartan, always a Spartan.

Thank you to the Vermilion Rotary Club for their generous donation of $500 to the Breakfast for Learning Program at St. Jerome’s. This donation will benefit many students to get a great start to their day.

We have a new Parent Advisory Council Executive for 2015/16 - Chairperson – Shelly Corbiere, Vice-Chair – Sherry Martin, and Secretary/Treasurer – Charlene McFarlane. The next meeting will be held on Monday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Learning To Curl

Nine-year-old Katie Zorn came out to curl with her sister and father at the Vermilion Curling Club’s Family Learn To Curl session on Monday, Oct. 26. “I always wanted to try it,” said Katie. Coordinator of Junior Curling for the Club, Joanne McCrae said that she wants younger people to develop an interest in junior curling.

FCC And Mannville Students Replenish Food Bank

When the call went out to the students at Mannville School to participate in Farm Credit Canada’s (FCC) Drive Away Hunger campaign, they responded by collecting 1,323 pounds of food that were promptly driven from the school to the Mannville Food Bank on Oct.26.

“The students deserve a lot of recognition,” said Susan Jackson, Mannville Food Bank volunteer. “Our supply has been low all summer.”

Jackson added that the loss of jobs in the area due to the downturn in the oil industry had led to an increased

need for the Food Bank’s services.

“In September alone we fed 55 people, 23 were children. We’re very happy (with the donation). We were very low – we were quite desperate,” said Jackson.

According to the FCC website, in Alberta, close to 50,000 people are assisted by a food bank each year, and of those, 43 per cent are children, which is higher than the national 36 per cent average of children who rely on food banks.

Manger Assistant, Julie Campbell were at the school to receive the donation and drive it away to the Mannville Food Bank. “ We’ve been doing it for several years now,” said McLaughlin. “It brings awareness to the fact that there is a real need for it,” he added.

“The total of 1,323 pounds (of food) is pretty amazing,” said Campbell.

Mannville School Assistant Principal, Rebecca McCullough said the goal was to fill the foyer of the school with food donations. Each student received a brown paper grocer y bag to take home and return with donated food items.

“We accomplished our goal,” said

McCullough. “This campaign brings a community awareness aspect into our schools.”

Kindergarten student Ryder Hayworth summed it up in a few words when he was asked how he felt about donating food.

“I feel pretty good,” he said.

Donations for the Mannville Food Bank can be dropped off on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the basement of the Mannville United Church. The Food Bank is volunteerrun in partnership with the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), and provides services for Mannville, Minburn and Innisfree.

It will take two trucks to deliver all of the food to the Vermilion Food Bank that was collected by the students at VES and Webb’s Ford dealership during their first Halloween We Scare Hunger food drive.

“They even helped load the truck.”

The truck was a 1949 Mercury M47 owned by Mike Webb.

“I thought this would look more scary than a new truck,” laughed Webb.

The food in the truck, as well as a second truck full of food that was collected by the students and staff at VES, and the staff at Webb’s Ford, will be driven over to the Food Bank by Webb this week.

Webb’s Ford will also be donating $800.

Ford partnered with Free the Children’s We Scare Hunger food drive last year, and it has quickly become one of the biggest food drives in Canada.

“It’s an initiative put forward between Ford and Free the Children to have some of these organized events where kids can learn to basically give back to their communities,” said General Manager of Webb’s Ford, Mike Webb.

“This is the first year for our dealership,” added Webb. “I approached VES to see if they would be interested in doing it. It provides an awareness factor to learn about the food bank and its importance.”

Judy has been a fitness instructor with CLASS since 1986, almost 30 years. She was honoured for her commitment in making the Vermilion River County a better and healthy place to live. Unfortunately, with the change of government funding and the increase of our fees, we were no longer able to have Judy’s fitness classes at CLASS. Lynda Moses joined CLASS in 2009 and came with a willing heart to help CLASS and do whatever she could to support us. Her kind heartedness lead her to CLASS, but she is saying goodbye after 6 years of volunteer service to do other community work. Alva Andersen has been a CLASS Board member since 2004. She has been an active member as a director, treasurer, Vice Chair and helper with fundraisers and promotions over the years. She has been a key pillar in keeping CLASS as a healthy and active non-profit organization, and this is a well overdue appreciation of her volunteer work. All the recipients received a small token of appreciation for their faithful and dedicated service to CLASS in promoting lifelong learning and literacy.

VES, J.R. And St. Jerome’s Hold Halloween Celebrations

VES, J.R. Robson and St. Jerome’s were filled with ghost, goblins, witches, princesses, creatures and everything else under the sun including celebrities like the Minions as each school held their

own activities to celebrate Halloween on October 30.

VES was full of happy little faces as children participated in a costume parade and dance along with the school’s We Scare Hunger campaign.

Over at J.R. Robson, nearly all the

students were in costume as they took part in Halloween activities such as donuts on a string, pumpkin bowling, ring toss, mystery box, pumpkin seed squirting, a Halloween movie and to add in some exercise volleyball and basketball took place in the gym.

Heading on over to St. Jerome’s, children were excitedly entering the gym for their costume parade that showcased a wide variety of creatures and characters including an invasion of at least six Minions before starting their Halloween dance.

Second Place For Rustler Crew’s Novice 8 At Westerns

It was very close, but for the first time in four years, the Rustler Crew didn’t win a gold medal at the Western Canadian University Championships.

“Every one of our boats competed hard right to the end but this year we were just beaten by bigger and better rowers,” says Peter Walsh, coach of the Rustler Crew.

The women’s novice 8 crew had the best result in the Oct. 17 regatta, finishing second in their 2,000m race, only 14 seconds behind the first place crew from the University of Victoria. Another

highlight for Lakeland’s rowing program was that a senior women’s pair qualified for the A final.

“We put a boat into the varsity A final which we’ve never done before. Jacquelyn Davidson and Katie Boychuk started rowing as a pair the week before the championships. For us to get to the final was quite a feat,” says Walsh.

In other races, the women’s junior varsity 4 placed fourth in the final while the men’s junior varsity 4 was fifth. The Rustlers fifth entry in the championships was a women’s lightweight double.

The regatta was held at Burnaby Lake and featured crews from Lake-

land, University of Victoria, University of Calgary, University of British Columbia, University of Manitoba, Simon Fraser University, University of Fraser Valley and Camosun College.

While the competitive season is done for the Rustlers, the crew will continue practicing on the Vermilion River as long as the weather is nice.

Walsh expects many of the rowers will be back on the Rustler Crew next year. 2016 will be a big season for the Rustlers as they host the Head of Vermilion Regatta at the Vermilion Provincial Park and also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Lakeland Rowing Club.

Tim Williams Returns To Vermilion Stage Shannon O’Connor Reporter

I t h a s b e e n 2 0 ye a r s s i n c e t h e Vermilion Folk Club was founded by original members Nigel Elmer, Dave Fisher, Rodney Hughes and Phyllis Elmer. To kick off the 20th Anniversary Celebration Year, Tim Williams, the

Club’s first performer, will be returning to the Vermilion stage.

“It is tremendous that he (Williams) is available and that he can come out and perform for the 20th Anniversary,” said founding and former board member Dave Fisher.

“We were thrilled to have someone

of Tim’s calibre t went y years ago,” added Fisher “He (Williams) was very interested in just putting the music out there, the same as we were. For the price that he came for - he was very kind to us.”

Fisher said ever yone in the Club l i ke d t h e f o l k s y b l u e s m u s i c t h a t Williams played that led to the decision to secure him as the Club’s first professional performer.

Williams’ reputation as one of Canada’s most renowned blues artists has been further entrenched through numerous accolades and awards in the ensuing years.

He recently (2014) took first place in the Solo/ Duo ac t c ategor y, and the Best Guitarist (Solo/Duo) at the 30th International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn. beating out more than 250 acts, from 16 countries, spanning four continents.

According to Tim Williams’ website, he has been performing since the mid60s, starting out in California coffee houses. He had the good fortune to

witness many first generation blues musicians during the “Blues Boom” of the mid and late 60s, which heavily influenced his musical style and direction.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Williams’ latest musical offering in the works is a unique mixture of old time blues, Hawaiian, and Mexican music intermingled with his own song writing.

He continues to play all over the world at festivals, concert halls, roadhouses and folk clubs. He has been nominated for several Maple Blues Awar d s; three JUN O awar d s; five Betsy/Mitchell Awards for composition/musical direction in theatre and approximately 12 Real Blues magazine awards, and was honoured as Guitarist of the Year by the Calgary Blues Music Association in 2012.

Fisher said Williams has been back to Vermilion a couple of times since his first performance. “ Having him back for this per formance, 20 years later, is very special,” he added.

Locals Raise Money For Mission To Philippines In 2016

If you happen to pass by the Vermilion Glad Tidings Pentecostal Assembly on November 8 you will likely smell the aroma of turkey and all the fixings coming out of the doors. A fall supper is being held to raise money towards a mission trip to the Philippines in 2016.

“What began as a simple fundraiser for a church in the Philippines has now turned into a hands on working relationship. We are ver y excited to be heading to the Philippines to lend a helping hand in building their church,” said Susan Hodges Marlowe who, along with Psalm Trigo, is co-ordinating the trip.

The trip will include several different projects such as the building of one church, repairs to a second church, a feed the children program, youth concert and outreach to the people of Panglao Island Bohol.

“We really don’t realize that when disasters strike, like it did with the ear thquake in 2013, that once the media moves on to the next big story people continue to struggle to survive.

It is kind of like out of sight out of mind,” said Hodges Marlowe.

“Because our dollar goes so much farther in the Philippines we are able to do amazing things. The plot of land for the new church costs $850 CND Congregation at the Dayspring Church. Photos submitted and the church building will cost about $1800 CND. That really amazes me.”

Over the next several months the Mission group will be doing fundraisers for the trip and Hodges Marlowe says there is a lot of work to be done. “ With each fundraiser we get one step closer to the Philippines and to helping the people after three years move closer to recovery. This will be the beginning of an amazing par tnership between our community and theirs and I am ver y excited about that,” said Hodges Marlowe.

“It seems that every time we plan a mission trip this community always steps up to make it possible. It is very humbling to have that kind of support and we are so very grateful to everyone.”

Michael Jackson Tribute Artist, Kyle Toy left a Vancouver movie set to come and perform a frighteningly good Michael Jackson impersonation at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Halloween night, hosted by SHAPE Art and Wellness Studio.

He flawlessly executed the choreography of a handful of Michael Jackson’s most popular songs, and included dancers in two of the numbers, Beat It and Thriller, who had participated in a dance workshop with him earlier in the day at SHAPE Studio.

“It was awesome, they were so good.

They were unbelievably quick at picking it up. We only did one little rehearsal today; they just learned it in about an hour. They were so eager and ready to do it and so nervous backstage. It was totally a blast!” said Toy after the performance.

SHAPE co-owner, Leigha Wald said about 30 people signed up for the workshop.

“It was great. We had children and adults come out,” she added. Approximately 120 people attended the evening performance.

Toy said he made the commitment to perform in Vermilion before he was cast in the movie that began shooting four days before his Halloween Thriller Night perfor-

mance. He said there was no way he was going to cancel and let Vermilion down.

“I’m from a small town in north Alberta called Bluesky which had about 175 people in it. I grew up taking dance classes and on the rare occasions someone would come in and do a show; it provided a glimpse of what else was out there,” said Toy. What else was out there for Toy now includes the main acting role that he is presently shooting that he referred to as a “sequel of sorts” of the movie Center Stage that came out about 15 years ago.

“This is like the new generation of Center Stage.”

The movie is being directed by Director X, who is well-known in the music video industry having directed artists such as Drake and Kanye West. The Executive Producer is Laurence Mark who is best known for his involvement in the movies, I, Robot, As Good as It Gets, and Jerry Maguire.

Toy has also danced with the Alberta Ballet and the Canadian Opera Company.

His performances as a Michael Jackson Tribute artist have included working relationships with Sarah McLachlan, the Make a Wish Foundation, and Rogers Telecom.

During Thriller Night in Vermilion, Wald introduced Toy as the number one Michael Jackson Tribute Artist in Canada, which

is really impressive considering Toy didn’t think it would be part of his career at all.

“I was dancing for a musical and after Michael Jackson died, the producer of the musical called me up and said, ‘Kyle, we really like working with you and we really want to do something else with you. How’s your moon walk?’

“He put together this show for me to do at the River Rock Casino in Vancouver, so I had two weeks to put something together.

He got me a make-up artist, costumes. I thought it was going to be a one-off, but the

calls started rolling in, and he became my manager.”

That was almost six years ago added Toy. “I definitely like to come back to small towns because if I didn’t see the few shows I saw, I don’t know if I would have got into dancing or acting or basically known that it was even possible to do that.”

Want to learn more about 4-H? On the horizon is a new District 4-H Fun Day. Funding for this event came from a generous donation from Vermilion UFA Farm Store (from their 2014 Harvest Supper).

District events and activities throughout the year include: Curling Day, Leader Level Training, District Communications (Public Speaking and Presentations), and Project Book Competition.

Lakeland College Submitted

In March 2015 the Vermilion River 4-H District was on the Northeast Regional Rotation to host Spring Fling for intermediate members. Members, Parents and Grandparents of Clubs within the District pitched in 4-H style (with energy, enthusiasm and persistence) to host the Friday night and Saturday event. Sixty intermediate members (which is the maximum number of delegates for the program) were treated to Clandonald hospitality with hayrides, a fireman’s challenge and

treats from local store owner Pat Huxley.

Vermilion River District Clubs hosted workshops, helped prepare and serve food, decorated for the Survivor theme, and provided overnight supervision.

Lakeland College And GPRC Sign Emergency Services Mou

Together, Lakeland College and GPRC are proactively working to expand access to emergency services training in northwestern Alberta.

Lakeland President Alice WainwrightStewart and GPRC President and CEO Don Gnatiuk signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) today enabling the colleges to build a partnership to enhance their capacity to meet the lifelong learning and educational needs of the emergency services sector.

“Lakeland College welcomes the opportunity to enter into this agreement and further strengthen its relationship with GPRC. Together we will collaborate and grow educational opportunities in emergency services, especially for high school students,” says Wainwright-Stewart. “Our presence in northwestern Alberta, including Grande Prairie, and our emergency services programming has the potential to grow thanks to this MOU, which could lead to dual-credit programming opportunities in the future.”

To date, Lakeland and GPRC jointly offered the NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Awareness Level course to high school students in Grande Prairie earlier in October.

“Working with our colleagues at Lakeland College, GPRC will continue to explore ways to expand the range of opportunities for students in our region thanks to this new agreement with Lakeland College,” says Gnatiuk. “GPRC’s dual credit program is growing and providing high school student the opportunity to take college courses that earn them high school credits. Signing this MOU

will help GPRC increase those for high school students to earn college credit and make the transition from high school to post-secondary easier while opening up the discussion for future partnerships to increase emergency services training in northwestern Alberta.”

Under the terms of the MOU, Lakeland and GPRC will share information regarding industry trends, seek opportunities to contribute to each other’s planning initiatives and work to identify programming opportunities that increase access to emergency services training and professional development in northwestern Alberta. Lakeland and GPRC will also explore the development of a joint strategy to enhance partnerships with First Nations communities.

Lakeland and GPRC will work through their respective registrars to develop and maintain admission processes for students interested in attending, and increase student and industry awareness of programming offered as a result of the MOU. As part of the agreement, Lakeland and GPRC will work together to identify opportunities for mutually beneficial research partnerships. To ensure the success of collaborative programs, Lakeland and GPRC will regularly review student success and explore new opportunities.

Lakeland’s Emergency Training Centre prepares firefighters and other emergency personnel to respond to all emergency events under all conditions. Core courses in firefighting and customized programs for client groups are available. Lakeland offers hands-on practical training with the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art training grounds in Canada.

Students Prepare To Open Play Program

(Vermilion, Alta.) Lakeland students are taking the lead by planning and operating their own play program. But before they welcome children to campus, these second-year early learning and child care (ELCC) students are busy organizing, designing and decorating two activity rooms. They’re also planning activities, marketing the program, developing healthy snack menus and preparing to work hands-on with infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

“I am looking for ward to building connections with the kids,” says Karen Culp, ELCC student.

Culp and her classmates are transforming two large classrooms into play centres. The infant/toddler room will feature a forest theme, complete with animals, seasonal features and sensory as p e c t s. T he pres c h o o l ro o m will include different activity centres, popular Disney characters and more.

Starting with a “blank slate” is proving to be a beneficial learning experience according to the students.“We want to make sure we prepare a great space for the children with our design and decorations, but we may also need to adjust it depending on their needs. We have to anticipate their reactions,” says Katarina Morin, ELCC student. “I look forward to seeing how the children interact and how they react to the environment. We have some special guests planned and it will be interesting to observe how the children respond to them and the activities we have planned. It’s going to be an incredible experience.”

“We get to decide and plan everything from the beginning, which is challenging compared to just being put in a practicum setting. We are learning to work together as staff not just students,” adds Culp. “It’s a very rewarding project.”

tod dler s in the mor ning from 9:3 0 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Preschool-age children can participate in the morning and afternoon sessions (1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.). Sessions are offered Monday thru Thursday.

Planned activities include excursions to Lakeland’s Emergency Training Centre, Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland, Recreation Centre and parks, among other destinations. To promote the program to local families, the students are advertising the program via Facebook, in local school newsletters and in local newspapers.

“This is a unique opportunity for our students because they truly take the lead and run their own program. We are the only college that offers this,” says Kelly Mazerolle, instructor. “It’s a valuable experience that will serve them well when it comes to their resume and future employment prospects. Plus, as a college we are thrilled to be able to

offer this service to our community and strengthen those connections.”

Local families with children ages five and under are encouraged to contact Lakeland College at 780 853 8693 if they are interested in the free play program. Please note, there is limited space in the four-week program. Registration is open to the community and Lakeland staff members from Nov. 2 to Nov. 12. The play program practicum has been running at Lakeland for 32 years.

Lakeland College student Laura Cobb is the third-place winner in a national kitchen design competition sponsored

by Waypoint Living Spaces® and the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). This year 25 colleges and universities from across the United States and Canada participated in the competition. A panel of four, NKBA certified industry experts judged all entries on various criteria, including safety and ergonomics, elements and principles of design, design planning, creativity, client’s request and presentation. Help Us Turn A House Into A Home For Christmas!

Habitat Vermilion Committee Submitted

The final stretch is upon us. Rain or shine, frost or snow, the goal of the Habitat Vermilion committee is to hand over the keys to our recipient family by Christmas.

The Habitat Vermilion house is being built with the generosity of the business community, with the support of many individuals who have contributed with $20 donations and with help from volunteers and friends who are braving the frosty weather to complete the back deck in the next few days.

This is the way to build affordable housing in our community. Can we turn it into a home by Christmas?

Marauders Win Wheatland Consolation, Host Provincial Qualifier Saturday

On the second play after the opening kickoff Brayden Chilibeck romped 55 yards for the only touchdown that the Marauders would need to win the Wheatland consolation final and advance to a Tier IV provincial qualifier.

Vermilion, now ranked fifth in the province, will host unranked Fort MacMurray next Saturday at 1 p.m. at the JR Robson field.

To get there, the Marauders accumulated 41 points before the home team Cold Lake Royals put up their only score of afternoon, an unconverted touchdown in the third quarter.

Chilibeck would score three more touchdowns on 238 rushing yards. The most dramatic of those would be on the final play of the first quarter. As the siren sounded indicating the clock ran out, he eluded all the Royals defenders along the line of scrimmage and then sprinted 45 yards to pay dirt.

The Marauders scored three majors in the second quarter to take a 34-0 lead into halftime. Two touchdowns came courtesy of Chilibeck’s determined running, and the third on a punt return by Donovan Yaceyko.

He actually ran a lot more than the 50 yards as he crossed the field’s width to find room on the outside and tight-roped the last 20 yards as he out legged his pursuers.

A trick third down play was key to the Marauders’ longest scoring drive. Midway in the second quarter on 3rd and nine, Chandler Nelson took the ball 18 yards, twice as many as were needed for first down yardage Both teams scored in the third, Yaceyko on a 35-yard run, and Royals Garrett Benoit from the three. His attempted two-point convert was thwarted by the Marauder defense.

The defense stood strong through the game with two sacks by Yaceyko and another by rookie Hayden Usenik. When the Royals tried to going to the air, the Marauder defense knocked down and tipped balls plus provided good coverage that dislodged what might have been catches. Particularly notable were Vincent Brosseau and Ryley Schmall in the third quarter.

Marauder points after: Noah Sanson stole the ball on one turnover early in the game. The Marauders thought they had already regained possession two plays earlier…There were numerous illegal procedures charged to both teams during the game…Chilibeck punted twice late in the game after Yaceyko was injured…

Jeremiah Ball called himself for a facemask. One the next play he provided a big tackle…Trevor Thor got a little more experience in the offensive backfield with Brayden Chilibeck’s second touchdown of four came on the last play of the first quarter. It was a ver y busy week for the Jungle Cats as they played three more road games. First up was a date with the Wheaties in Killam on October 21. There were some fireworks in this game and a stellar effort from goaltender Jorden Piska resulted in a 4-0 loss. The real story of the game was a superb effort from the entire team as they kept pace with the Wheat Kings for the majority of the game.

Only two teams in the league so far this season have managed to contain the explosive Wheaties to less than four goals in a game and they sit in 1st and 2nd place. Rookie overage forward and new addition Nolan Blair made his impact as he racked up his first NEAJBHL fighting major as did veteran forward Evan Bardoel as the Tigers proved a game opponent for the 3rd place Kings.

Next up was a return trip to Cold Lake to face the Ice who took the home opener 5-3 a week prior. It was clear from the start this was going to be a

tough game for both sides. Net minder Danton Brooks was in the zone and he stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced as the Tigers exacted some revenge with a big 3-2 win. The yellow and black had their chances to bury the Ice often as they finished the game 2-15 on the power play. The game did come with a cost unfortunately, as rookie defenseman Adam Gerling will require surgery to repair a broken wrist sustained in the win.

The spirits were high as the team boarded the bus October 25 for the first trip of the year to Saddle Lake to tangle with the Warriors. It was apparent from the drop of the puck that three games in five days had caught up to the Tigers. Backstop Jorden Piska coming off a great game in Killam was called upon again to deliver between the pipes. Not only did he stop 42 shots in the victory but he robbed two of three Warriors in the shootout as the Tigers toppled Saddle Lake 2-1.

5th place in the NEAJBHL standings.

We boarded the bus one final time on Halloween Saturday as we made our 2nd and final trip to Frog Lake this season.

The Tigers returned to home action on Sunday, November 1 as the 8th place Rangers rolled into Vermilion for a 2 p.m. afternoon start. This marks the start of a five out of six home game stand for the Tigers.

Over the month of November the Red Silhouette images will be displayed at City Hall, RCMP Detachment, Servus Sports Centre and For the Interval Store. These images represent men, women and children who have lost their lives due to family violence.

OUR PURPOSE

To provide safety, support, & education to families and communities regarding the issue of family violence.

HOW WE HELP Safety, Support, Education and Prevention During 2014-2015: • Emergency Shelter served 174 women and 223 children • Second Stage facility admitted 13 families with 23 children.

• Crisis line fielded approximately 1252 calls Community Education Program promotes community awareness of Family Violence and its affects through presentations and programs.
