Rock ‘n’ Roll Literacy With Sigmund Brouwer

Author Sigmund Brouwer embarked on his Rock ‘n’ Roll Literacy tour of Vermilion, visiting VES, J.R. Robson and St. Jerome’s on October 22 using humour, stories and music to hit all the right notes with students and teachers.

Brouwer said the presentation did not differ greatly from one school to the next as the core message is the same; sorry Shakespeare, but according to Brouwer, the story, not the play, is the thing.

“Writing is like a guitar – a guitar delivers songs like writing delivers stories.

The story is first – then you can make your story better by making your writing better,” Brouwer told the students at VES. “The alphabet is the coolest invention in history,” he added. Brouwer likened it to a computer code whereby the act of writing takes thoughts from the students’ heads and allows them to take over a teacher’s thoughts when they are reading them.

“You have glued those words into your teacher’s head.” Even the act of punctuating properly could exert power over a teacher, he elaborated. “When you use a period – you are telling your teacher – STOP right there. You may not continue until I give you permission to go.”

Brouwer, who is the author of 40 books in a variety of genres, said he’d much rather talk about story than writing and even revealed the secret to writing a good story.

“Story begins as soon as there is a problem.” Brouwer shared an incident that he used as material in his book Rebel

Glory involving cockroaches in a hockey player’s uniform. Cockroaches, boogers, and cow gas are great fodder for Brouwer’s stories.

“Once you understand who your audience is, choose a story that makes them feel what they want to feel. Boys like silly, gross stories. Give them a story they want to hear.”

Interspersed throughout the presentation was a selection of new and classic rock tracks that excited students and teachers alike, and got them moving to the music.

“A story is like music. Great songs and great stories make you feel something.”

Brouwer ended his Rock ‘n’ Roll Literacy presentation by encouraging all the students to become reading ninjas as it would help them in their quest to write interesting stories.

Lakeland College Open House

It was a full two days for prospective students at this year’s Lakeland College Open House that took place at both the Vermilion and Lloydminster campuses on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24.

Enrolment Specialist at Lakeland College, SarahJayne Biglieni said over 1,000 people enrolled online.

Online registrants were eligible to have their registration fee waived if they signed up for a course during the Open House.

“Last year we had 350 sign up during Open House. We’re hoping to surpass that,” said Biglieni. “We’ve had lots of people through, including three school groups from Lloydminster, Two Hills and a combined group from St. Paul, Myrnam and Mallaig.”

In Vermilion, visitors were able to see the Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland.

Some experimented in labs and sat in on classes, learned about the trades, as well as the 50 other programs offered at the college.

Residence and campus tours were offered throughout the two days. Prospec-

tive students walked through the halls and visited classrooms with the guidance of student ambassadors.

Each area of study had a Lakeland representative provide details about the courses as well as answer questions and concerns. Teachers were also on site to provide demonstrations and explain course requirements to prospective students.

A self-confessed “weed geek”, Harvest Systems and Seeding and Tillage teacher, Laurel Perrott got one tour group excited about weeds as she explained the reason why Field Horsetail is so resistant to modern eradication techniques.

“It’s a prehistoric plant,” explained Perrott.

“It hasn’t evolved like other plants.”

In the gymnasium, 39 employers at the 12th Annual Career Fair held in conjunction with the College’s Open House, catered to people looking for employment as well as college students looking for internships and/or permanent jobs or alumnus looking to see what is new in their fields.

We ask, so what do we do when we see garbage? They know that we don’t throw garbage around.

The children are learning that the environment is the most important part. It’s important to let everybody know that this isn’t my park, it’s everybody’s park!

The days that we put up with the idiots and stuff; those days are minimal.

The days I remember are the days spent teaching with the little kids in the park. I find now that the children are educating the parents about keeping the environment clean.

who work in Alberta’s 478 parks and protected areas to ensure that Albertans’ visits are safe and pleasant. Their main roles are: To safeguard people while they are visiting parks, to manage park user activities, and to protect the natural resources, including flora and fauna of the park.

When did you realize that this was the career calling for you?

I grew up on a farm in Marwayne before we moved to Lloydminster. By the time I was 20 years old I knew I wanted to be a conservation officer. So as soon as I got out of Grade 12, I went straight to college in Lethbridge to be a conservation officer. I love it and that’s why I’m here.

What was the most controversial situation you were involved in as a conservation officer?

I had a concern with an oil company that wanted to come into a park to do seismic once. I told him that they were not allowed to come into the park to do seismic. He said “yeah we are.” I contacted my higher ups and they said I was right. If nobody says anything they will move in and they’ll do what they want.

I know it would have been a lot tougher if it had happened earlier in my career. With my experience on the job I knew how to deal with that type of situation.

What are some of your other duties?

I assist training our seasonal officers and I also teach defensive driving and once again it’s about developing a habit.

What do you love most about the job?

My favourite part of the job is the public information.

I love teaching the younger generation.

I give a lot of talks to school groups. There is nothing better than having a classroom outside like that.

I am trying to develop a habit with these little people, so that we achieve the mindset that they know you don’t throw garbage

With Halloween being this week we will watch the excitement of the day g r ow a s c h i l d r e n and adults prepare for the time we all get to act like children and dress up in scary or sometimes funny costumes, attend parties and gatherings, visit haunted houses, watch scary movies and of course listen to the joy and laughter of little children running from house to house trick-or-treating.

The origins of Halloween can be widely debated as some believe it originates partly from Christian “All Saints Day,” a day of feast.

The word Halloween has Christian origins: in medieval Britain, All Hallows’ Eve, from which we derive our “Halloween,” was the evening before All Saints Day (or All Hallows). Yet the customs of Halloween may derive more from an ancient, pre-Christian, Celtic festival of Samhain, which some argue was

adapted by early Christians to convert the Celtic people. It was observed yearly in Britain and Ireland on November 1, marking the end of the harvest and beginning of winter. People wore costumes and masks to ward off harmful spirits. The bones of slaughtered animals were cast into fires to aid the dead on their journey, hence the term “bone fire” which nowadays we call “bonfire.”

Halloween traditions were brought to Canada by means of Scottish and Irish immigrants. One of the customs brought with them was the Jack-O-Lantern. Originally the Jack-O-Lantern was a carved out turnip holding a candle. similar to many Halloween origins there is debate about how the Jack –O-Lantern came to be. Some believe that the carved turnips were used as lanterns on Samhain, while others claim it came from an adaptation of the old Christian custom of commemorating souls in purgatory by lighting candles in turnips. Also, there is some debate about the Jack-O-Lantern being derived from a story of a man who was refused entry into either heaven or hell because he was a miser and he played tricks on

the devil. The man Jack was condemned to walk the earth with a lantern until Judgement Day. Halloween this year falls on a Saturday, a night where we adults often enjoy going out on a regular week with friends.

However, this week its special as it’s our time to dress up in costumes and go out. With that being said it is my wish that as adults, we remember that drinking and driving at any time is wrong, but Halloween night we have to be particularly vigilant in our behaviour and make sure we do not cause any harm or tragedy to another family with our own stupidity.

Make sure when we go out to celebrate to have arrangements made on how we are going to get home. Leave your vehicle at the bar and cab it!

As for our children it is our responsibility to make sure they are kept safe.

As a community we will have to be more aware of our surroundings while we drive through the streets, children often get so excited they forget the rules of the road and will pop out in front of an oncoming car without even thinking of the consequences.

Dark coloured costumes will make the children much harder to see, put a reflective stripe on your childrens’ costumes so they are more visible to vehicles.

We also have to remember that even though we live in our safe little community, it is still very important to check all treats our children receive before they eat anything.

We need to monitor all activities our children are involved in because let’s face it when they get out with friends a night of fun can quickly turn into a night of destruction. Cars, houses and buildings can and will be pranked or vandalized.

Teach our children to respect the property of other community members, instruct them on the consequence of their actions if they feel the need to succumb to peer pressure.

Keep all pets inside, children running into a driveway or yard unannounced can cause a dog to react instinctively which could result in a child being bitten.

Let’s keep this Halloween a safe and happy day for everyone involved, caution, perseverance and smarts will do it.

Lakeland REA Members… Did You Know…

Dear Editor

-LAKELAND REA refused to have a joint meeting with ATCO Electric and the membership to explain the ATCO proposal, so we could fully understand the proposal ATCO presented to the members.

-That ATCO pricing is regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission. REAs are NOT. They can charge what they like and are, on average, higher than ATCO’s.

-ATCO offered over $30,000,000.

That’s about $21,500 per tap in OUR pockets with the same services and lower rates!!!!

-Instead of having a Lakeland/ATCO/ Members meeting – we understand the REA has hired a lawyer(s) – with OUR money, to roadblock attempts to get all the information out to allow members to decide the fate of the REA.

-We asked for a membership list with the intent to call all members with the information. The Board responded with numerous requests of members to sign a “Personal Information Non-Release Form”, putting up another roadblock in our attempts to contact members.

-Why does the REA not send out annual audited financial statements? Are you aware the REA lost over $450,000.00 last year alone because they were using member’s money to hedge energy funds, which resulted in this substantial loss?

-VERY IMPORTANT: The Directors have proposed changing the quorum to 75% of membership, specifically for a vote to sell the REA; (this would be an almost impossible number to achieve!).

If passed, the board will have effectively squashed our RIGHT to voice our opinions. Why is the Board doing so now?

Applications for Recreation Funds may be picked up at the Two Hills County Office.

Written applications must prove need of financial assistance (in accordance with County Policy) for facility operation purposes and must be accompanied with the Facility’s Audited Annual Financial Statement (2014).

Recreation funds will be distributed for approved applications in December 2015.

Folks I don’t know how my fall or autumn got away from me but it is already past midOctober, and although my favorite time of the year is fall as leaves go thru the color change transition, but this year that was very short lived. Most leaves have now already fell, or most likely blown away by high winds, shortening my time to enjoy our picturesque autumn here in Alberta. I even love that fresh scent of fallen leaves scattered all over a wilderness floor.

didn’t happen…again.

So I let a few cow elk calls out hoping to entice the bulls closer, when to my right I heard a thundering crashing coming over a hill and in a blur was at my stand…literally, a calf that got separated from the herd, most likely at a fence was just trying to keep up.

The calf literally ran in between the tree and my ladder for the stand, close enough to rock the stand somewhat, if I wasn’t fully awake then I was certainly wide eyed now, the calf stood there for a bit than in a blur once again was off and running.

The Miss Pickles Chronicles Like most men I have my favorite spot to lay back after a hard long day, mine happens to be my favorite leather couch and a comfortable favorite pillow, something I look forward to more and more.

Since bowhunting season started and I have been away at the cabin on weekends it appears I have lost my spot, in recent weeks when I let Miss Pickles in to visit, it’s now a race to my spot.

Of course she beats me there every time, by time I get there she is totally laid back, with her big head snuggled comfortably in my pillow, she will not move, so I say there is enough room and try to lay beside her. Since I gave up that spot it appears that just won’t do, so now pushing 90lbs, with four strong legs and feet like snowshoes, she just simply pushes me to the floor, now the fur flying wrestle is on!

When you see a l l t h e f i x i n g s t h at promote the Halloween season, it would make you wonder why on Earth we so glorify the witches, spooks, goblins, or whatever else the season entails!!

The catchy orange and black colour scheme and the idea of pumpkins and black cats in the back ground with a witch riding on a broom, “WOW”. Really, what’s the ruckus all about? I guess the merchants won’t turn down anything that gives such a wonderful opportunity to sell whatever they can. There is a real trade in all sorts of goodies to hand out to the trick or treaters. And of course they all need masks and costumes to go with the ritual.

I’ve noticed in several yards displays all of the skulls, skeletons, and witches, bats all depicting the, “Halloween motif”.

Made me wonder, why? What for? I can understand the excitement of kids going door to door trick or treating, but I wonder at all the other business of promoting evil spirits and all the dark sides of our being!!

My old Uncle Herman liked to scare us kids silly with his talk of evil spirits and all things that went bump in the night. It took me years to overcome my fear of the dark.

Halloweens Of The Past

Really!! I just hope this all doesn’t transpire to the same feelings for our youngsters in today’s happenings.

In my childhood days, an orange pumpkin didn’t happen much in this area.

They wouldn’t too often get ripe in our short season. Some years we would try to make a “Jack-O-Lantern”, with a hallowed out turnip, if you can imagine that. Now you find molded plastic Jack-O-Lanterns all fitted with lights that flash even. Seems like any chance to be creative has been passed over, as all that is done already.

I can remember the fun we had creating faces on those pumpkins and getting a place to stand the candle. Remember how the candles left their stamp on the flavour of the pie made from the pumpkin after it was relieved of its scary duty!!

Let’s go back to a “Halloween”, party like we had at the old Ganton School.

One I can picture was on a dark, I mean, a really dark rainy evening. We hooked up the democrat buggy, because the road was unfit for any motor vehicle. Now buggies don’t have lights, and I remember mom and us kids had a real time trying to stay on the dirt mud, road!! It took a fair bit of time to get there safely with the water, tub and apples and get everything organized.

I don’t guess a lot of folks now-days have ever dunked for an apple, but you

could almost get drowned trying to grab an apple by the stem with your teeth, with your hands behind your back. It was difficult, to say the least.

Then, after you even got an apple lifted from the tub by its stem, you’d hang it on a string suspended from a clothes line rope strung across the school room.

The idea was, you had to bite a chunk from the apple with your hands, again not being used. You’d never guess the trials it took to get that done. First done won the game.

Then we had a big paper donkey stuck to the blackboard and you needed to find it blindfolded and pin a tail on it. Lots of fun. The tail got stuck on all kinds of different places that would make you laugh.

The winner was the one closest to the tail end!!

the tricks on the neighborhood were not such a problem. One of the later parties I remember involved someone putting a generous layer of black pepper on the hot stove. The result was terrible as I remember.

I remember also a few times my mail box found its way to a far distant location and my brother almost wrecked himself when he shut off a neighbour’s power and ran into a gate across the driveway in his getaway run. Mostly good clean fun and a chance for a late evening visit.

I think we really should look for a more positive way to celebrate our harvest and have a less negative deal than is represented by spooks, goblins, witches and such. Like the song that goes in part like this “You got to accentuate the positive, and eliminate the negative, and don’t mess with Mr. Inbetween.”

Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast The Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast was held at the Elk’s Hall on Sunday, Oct. 24.

The proceeds from the breakfast will go toward the Walking Through Grief Society. Co-chair of the Pancake Breakfast, Wayne Hemauer said the Knights of Columbus breakfast supports various non-profit organizations, and that they were happy to be helping out the Walking through Grief Society this time around.

Walking Through Grief local facilitator, Lynda Moses welcomes people to the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast that was held at the Elk’s Hall on Sunday, Oct. 24. Monday, October 19, 2015: a momentous day for Canada. The Toronto Blue Jays triumphed over the Kansas City Royals with a finish of 11-8. And a majority Conservative government under the leadership of Stephen Harper was defeated by the Liberal Party of Canada under the leadership of Justin Trudeau. Heady times for a humming nation.

What thoughts are we left to ponder in the aftermath? Well, the Blue Jays carry on to the next game in the series. The nation shifts, and its citizens respond with delight or despair, depending upon our hopes and expectations for the results in the election.

Whether you celebrate or mourn the defeat of Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party, you‘ve probably been engaged in some interesting

conversations. Why did so many Canadians turn away from the Conservatives? The apparent decision to attempt conquest by attack, by inciting division, by instilling fear of...well, almost everything from Justin Trudeau’s hair to a muslim woman’s mode of dress to daring to allow anyone but a Conservative government with Stephen Harper at the helm to guide our nation into a foreboding future, might have contributed. Did you see the strange front page ad published in so many weekend editions of Postmedia and Sun newspapers? Besides the strangeness of having our print media so blatant in political endorsement, the connotation ought make an ordinary citizen uneasy, no matter where your allegiances reside.

The first line of the ad read in bold letters: ‘Voting Liberal will cost you’. I imagined a nasty note, hand scrawled on a soiled, wrinkly scrap of paper wrapped around a rock and hurled through my window.

Beyond personal preference for leadership style or tenor of governance, we Albertans might pause here to examine what kind of players we’re launching into the public forum.

Harper, an Alberta homeboy, rose with stellar speed under the mentorship of those who recognized his immense potential and ability, nurtured until he surpassed them all in both ambition and tenacity. With his focused ideology, Harper soared to power, serving as our Prime Minister for nearly ten long years, and was not without admirable accomplishments during his tenure no matter your opinion of the man or his methods.

Will he be better remembered for those accomplishments though, or for his penchant for silencing dissent, his leaning toward the negative, his disparaging discourse in the House?

There have always been rumblings in the West, resentments about too much

power residing east of Manitoba for our liking. Some grouse about the imbalance of power, too much of it residing in the East, where the majority of our federal leaders have originated. Why is this so important? Are we not one united country, or is that only a Canadian myth we perpetuate for the duping of idealistic outsiders looking in when in reality there exists a real, if petty, East/West rivalry that will not relent?

Unity trumps division. It just does.

When we next get a chance to launch one of our Western brothers or sisters into the national arena, let us consider presenting not just an ambitious candidate, but one of honour, one who listens to and respects those whose ideas and opinions differ from his or her own, one who promotes a strengthening of national unity, and who leaves no doubt that regardless of what part of the country we reside in, we belong here and we’re worthy, no matter what we think or wear.

Going To Graceland Set To Captivate Vermilion

Everything old is new again. And so it is for Going to Graceland, a nine-piece band of musicians from Edmonton, featuring the James Murdoch band and members of Le Fuzz. “The thing about Graceland is it’s just one of those records that you can play from top to bottom and it captivates an audience,” Murdoch said in a recent interview with Josef Jacobson of the Lloydminster Source. James Murdoch has been a fan of the 1986 Paul Simon album “Graceland” since he was a child, and although he has been performing it for five years, he still listens to the album today.

Throughout intensive rehearsals and many performances, the band has achieved a natural sound, as true to the original material as is possible. And although the album is 29 years old, its contemporary mood inspires audiences to spill into the hallways and dance. The Going to Graceland band brings the music to life while respecting its

unique character.

“Strange, sweet, willful … ” were some of the accolades for Paul Simon’s Graceland in 1986, yet the album was controversial.

Released during the last years of apartheid in South Africa, Graceland earned admiration and rage. While the world applauded, a number of groups felt that Paul Simon had broken the anti-apartheid embargo by working with black South African artists.

Simon stated categorically that this collaboration between blacks and whites proved that nobody was superior or inferior, and that the album was an acknowledgement of their work as musicians. By 2014, Graceland had sold over 16 million copies worldwide.

Carrot sea s o n i s upon us. We just finished digging all of the c arrots from our farm garden. We ended up with two five gallon pails.

That is a lot of carrots to wash and scrub, and your back can get sore standing at the sink for that long.

Many years ago I got a very helpful tip from two farm women that were my senior. They told me to put the carrots in the washing machine. I said “really?” not quite sure that it would be a good idea. They both assured me that they had done it many times, and that the carrots came out very clean with no damage to the washing machine or the carrots. They were entirely right and I am so thankful that they shared this tip with me.

You twist the carrot top off, remove any large clumps of dirt and then toss them into the top loading washing machine.

Every fall, when I am harvesting my carrots I fondly remember these dear farm ladies. I then bag the carrots in plastic bags and store them in a

They keep well into the New Year.

I have found that the se cret (also learned from the same senior farm woman) has been to plant the variety of carrots called Nantes, which are long keepers and taste amazing in our local prairie soil. Last year I could not find Nantes carrot seed, so I purchased the variety that was available in the store but the carrots did not keep as well or taste as good.

All of these great carrots have me thinking of ways to use up our carrots: carrot cake, carrot soup, carrot salads, carrot pie! They are great eaten fresh, ver y nutritious and are an amazing source of vitamin A. Here are a few of my favorite carrot recipes.

Carrot Cake 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 cup canola oil 4 eggs 1 cup brown sugar 2 cups flour, you can use whole wheat whole barley, all purpose or a mixture 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

3/4 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/2 teaspoon sea salt with iodine 3 cups grated raw carrots 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup raisins Beat the eggs until frothy; slowly add the oil, beating it into the eggs.

Add the sugar and stir well. Add all the remaining ingredients and then blend well. Pour batter into a oiled 9 x 13” baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 3 0 minutes or until d o ne.

This time and temperature works for a glass pan, but your oven may be slightly different. Frost the cake with cream cheese icing when the cake has cooled.

Cream Cheese Icing 1 8 oz. package of cream cheese (250 grams) at room temperature 1 Tablespoon olive oil 2 Tablespoons melted butter 1 1/2 cups powdered icing sugar With an ele c tri c mixer, beat the cream cheese, the butter and the olive oil together. Add the icing sugar and beat until creamy. Ice the cooled cake.

The book is in its final st ag e of publishing now (will be released in the next three months), but one of the best parts of doing this project for me was the fact that I had the good for tune t o g e t “ m a r r i a g e a d v i c e ” f r o m 17 women with a combined 600+ years of marriage. That is a treasured gift.

So, to continue the “sneak peeks” into my Farmwives interviews.....this is Dorothy Cooper. She is a near neighbour of mine and in addition to her recipe for “Hamburger Soup” that she shares in the book, here are three of the answers to her 17-question interview.

I’ve been married for 39 years. We have four daughters.

What is the best part, for you, in this life as a farm wife?

The best part is that you are living your life, with your family, while doing the job that you are making a living at.

Some of the work becomes a way of life for the family.

1/2 cup butter or coconut oil 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1 teaspoon vanilla & zest of 1/2 lemon 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 100 grams pecans 1/4 cup coconut flour 2 cups grated carrots 1/2 cup raisins (optional) Line an 8” round cake pan with wax paper: fit the wax paper sheet into the pan and cut off the excess.

Using an electric egg beater, beat together the eggs, honey and coconut oil. Beat in the spices, vanilla, baking p owd e r, b a k i n g s o d a , l e m o n ze s t and the lemon juice. In a small food processor or coffee grinder, grind the pecans until they are a small crumb.

Stir the freshly ground pecans and grated carrot into cake batter. Pour into the prepared cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Turn the cake on to a plate and carefully peel back the wax paper. Ice the cake with cream cheese icing or any other icing. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for an easy to cut, well formed texture.

W hat is a key p i e c e of advic e you could give to keep a marriage strong?

One reality is: Life does NOT carry on and you don’t just live “ happily ever after”. I’m not sure what advice I have, but some would be: 1) to share the same future goals for yourselves and work towards them together. 2) Keep communication open and alive at all times. This means discussing things and really listening to what each other says. 3) Keep your own individual interests going, even if they are not mutual. But don’t let them overtake your time. 4) Realize that there are going to be times that are hard and it will take a lot of work to get through them. 5) Keep a sense of humor in general.

Vermilion Garden Club Invites Master Gardener

T h e Ve r m i l i o n G a r d e n C l u b ’ s speaker on Oct. 22 was Master Gardener Barb Teeter. Teeter received her Master Gardener Cer tificate in 2002 from the University of Alberta.

“The year we didn’t take the combines out,” said Teeter.

Dur ing the present ation Teeter shared over 400 photos of people’s

g ar d ens, in c lu d ing her own, m ost of which were taken by professional photographer Adam Gibb from Gardens West Magazine. She drew the members attention to what worked harmoniously in each picture in terms of texture, blending, and staging, and adding structure to gardens. She also pointed out plants that she is doing away with in her own garden due to their non-performance.

Congratulations to Anna Ulrich and Kaylie Krys for leading St. Jerome’s to an awesome 8th place finish in 1A Cross Country Provincials in Grand Prairie on October 17. Both Kaylie and Anna competed in Intermediate Girls with 117 runners from across the province participating in that division.

Kaylie finished 97th overall in the Intermediate Girls division and 13th overall in 1A. Anna finished 9th overall in the province for Intermediate Girls, missing out on 8th place by 0.2 seconds, and placing 1st overall in 1A. Great job girls!

Kindergarten to Grade 6 students were treated to an energetic and music filled presentation by author, Sigmund Brouwer.

Sigmund shared his love for story with the students. He shared some of his book titles and trailers. He encouraged the students to

“ Hardy may mean sur vive, but it doesn’t mean thrive,” said Teeter who included roses and a variety of shrubs in this categor y. With reference to planting the popular weigela shrub she said, “Why do we do this to ourselves?”

The dwarf lilac was on Teeter’s list of champion performers because not only is it hardy, it is also drought resistant and can be shaped into anything.

Although Teeter said her favourite plants vary from year to year, this year the plants she wouldn’t be able to do without in her garden are hens and chicks.

“They are quite an interesting little plant in their own right,” said Teeter of the succulents. “They are like jewel box gardening.”

Semper vivium (hens and chicks), which literally means “live forever,” have been trending in gardens for the past five years said Teeter. These s u c c u l e n t s a r e e a sy t o g r o w a n d are available in all colours, shapes, textures and sizes.

Teeter also addressed some pretty pesky problems some of the members were having in some of the gardens in the Club’s care, as well as their individual gardens. Gophers, chickweed, and aphids were some of the common concerns. Teeter’s advice was to deal with any issue immediately. “ One of the disciplines we were t aug ht at s c ho ol was, if you think

you’re going to have a problem, you are, so get out there and deal with it right away.”

One member offered a novel way to deal with chickweed by suggesting it can be eaten.

The Book Fair had a very successful “Parent Night” on Thursday, October 15.

Over $1000 of books was purchased for the library. Thank you to all the support of the students and parents. Thank you to Mrs. Bielech, Mrs. Sheppard and Mrs. Crate for making this event possible.

On Wednesday, October 21, the St. Jerome’s community gathered to give thanks and to celebrate mass together. Father Roger

and Father Myron Pyszcz, from St. Olga’s, shared the word of God and the Eucharist with our staff, students and other community members. Father Roger encourage us to use the gift of our “conscience” each day and to always show the “Love of Christ” during our personal interaction with others.

Students cheered on the RCMP and the Grade 12 students who took part in a friendly, but competitive road hockey game at noon on Thursday, October 22. The teams were evenly matched, but the RCMP scored with minutes left to win the game 4-3. Thanks to everyone who participated in this great event.

Congratulations to all our volleyball teams who had great weekends of competition during the weekend of October 16/17.

Congratulations to the Sr. Boys who rallied back after placing fourth in the round robin to bringing home gold from Plamondon.

St. Jerome’s will be celebrating Hallow-

een on Friday, October 30 with a variety of activities. Grade 6-12 students are able to wear their costumes throughout the day.

The Middle Level has activities planned for the afternoon. Elementary students will get into their costumes after lunch recess.

Students from kindergarten to Grade 5 will gather in the gym at 1:00 p.m. for a Costume Parade, followed by classroom parties.

St. Jerome’s students enjoyed “Just Say Hi” week. Exchanging buttons, having special visitors at the school handing out buttons, and being eligible for prizes got everyone very excited about the week. Thank you to VIBE and all the community agencies and businesses for organizing and participating in this amazing event.

Communities support King family at benefit game Hudson King (left) faced off against her sister Kennedy (right) at a benefit hockey game for their family Saturday night in Kitscoty. Dropping the puck was referee Gordon King. Both girls were captains for their respective teams, the Marwayne Monarchs and Monarch alumni. Their eldest sister Marti Jean sang O Canada. Their father Don, who played for the Monarchs, was killed in June in a collision near Camrose. Nancy Miciak, Kitscoty Minor Hockey vice-president, presented them, and their mother Rebecca, with Don’s retired Monarch jersey as well as a memorial plaque. Heather Klages presented Meals in the Field, a signed photograph of this fall’s harvest. Among the benefit activities were a 50/50 draw, a raffle for a signed jersey and photo of the Canadian women’s gold medalist team in Sochi, a silent auction and a live pie auction. Ten pies baked by the Paradise Valley United Church women fetched $4,950 in that auction. Concession proceeds also went to the King family. Nine-year-old Hudson scored the first goal of the game for the Monarchs and Kennedy notched a hat trick. Her PMW Steelers AAA Female Midget teammates were in the stands wearing their team sweaters.

Also wearing their jerseys in the stands were the Kitscoty Midget Pitbulls. Don designed their logo many years before.

The “Just Say Hi” campaign ran for its sixth year in VES. It is based on the premise that all students need positive connections with adults, which is one of the 40 Developmental Assets. From October 19-22, students participated by collecting three different colours of buttons by visiting one of the participating partners, exchanging with students from other schools or greeting a community partner that visited their school. Buttons were available from various participating businesses who displayed a “Just Say Hi” sign, the RCMP, our MLA Dr. Richard Starke, Addictions and Mental Health, and Victim Services.

On October 16, the Grade 6 students took a trip to the Vermilion Provincial Park. Their trip tied in with their science unit “Trees and Forests”.

Students had the opportunity to classify leaves, bark and branching patterns with the help and

expertise of Mr. Gary Walsh.

Also on Oct. 16, the Grade 6 students exercised their democratic right and participated in Student Vote. They registered with student vote in the spring and were sent fantastic resources to help both the students and the adults become more informed voters. The students took their right to vote responsibly and the results proved it. The students in the Lakeland Riding voted in the same government that was elected on October 19.

On October 19, VES Grade 6B students and the Grade 6 students from Mannville participated in an activity that allowed them to realize the importance of clear written communication.

During the process they created a monster, wrote a description of the monster and then swapped with the other class. They drew each other’s monsters based only on the written description and then did a big reveal via Google chat. They discussed the similarities and differences between the drawings and the original

monsters and were able to self-assess their own writing skills. Not only did they discover what they need to do in their writing, they also had a blast goggle chatting and making some new friends.

Grade 3 students have been learning about fables – short stories that teach a lesson in which the character usually does something clever or foolish. In the fable, Stone Soup, they learned of a character that gets the community to work together to make a soup that they share at the end. The people are unwilling to share at first and then gain a sense of togetherness and belonging at the end of the fable. Grade 3 ended their fable unit by making and eating their own version of «stone soup».

This October V.E.S. plans to scare hunger away from our community. Partnering with Webb’s Ford of Vermilion we will be participating in the We Scare Hunger food drive campaign.

At the end of our campaign we will deliver all the donations to our local food bank.

In his motivational talk he advised business owners and employees to make it more about their customers rather than themselves.

“It can be as simple as taking the time to give a stranger directions in your town. It’s important to take the time to make that person feel important. Remember you are not selling a product - you’re selling a feeling; make it about your customer’s experience, your attitude influences! “Recognise that there are types of people in the world. One thing I notice about the Apple’s and the Harley Davidson’s of the world is that they are selling an experience not a product,” encouraged Poirier.

Dinner was cooked by Lasting Impressions which was followed by the awards ceremony. Lakeland Funeral Home supplied the chair covers and sashes. Lakeland Country Forests and Fantasy Flowers contributed colourful centrepieces which guest were allowed to take home afterwards. “ Honestly, ever ybody that I work with is such a vital part. That you for being such a great team to work with,” said Candice Anderson in her acceptance speech.

Tannis Henderson from Elevation was overcome with emotion receiving her award, “Thank you so much for this, this means everything to me after moving to Vermilion three years ago. I just wanted to make a place for women.”

Len Swan from Lens Party Bus was over the moon with delight upon being

called out as winner of Business the of the Year.

“This is amazing. It’s the first award I’ve ever won. It was never about the money, I love what I do,” said Swan.

Mannville Harvest Celebrations

A harvest celebration took place at the Gazebo in the Village of Mannville on October 22.

“It’s the first time we’ve held celebrations for the harvest like this in years,” said Mayor of Mannville Dave Huppertz.

“It’s great to hold this event today and get people out to celebrate the harvest season, anything that brings the community together is a very positive thing,” said Mannville Councillor Kelly Dalton.

There were competitions held for Best Chili, Best Apple Pie, Best Dill Pickles, Largest Pumpkin, Best Pumpkin Pie, Best Carrot Pickles and the Most Unique Pumpkin.

A crowd of supporters gathered after the judging for chili and a bun and a slice of apple pie.

There was also a competition for best scarecrow display for Mannville businesses and residential areas and for the best fall/harvest business display.

Faye Whitten won second place for the best chili and said that her secret ingredient was the ‘Rotel’ tins of tomatoes with chilies that she buys down in Arizona. “I use the Rotel and I also put bacon in my chili,” said Whitten. “I make Texas chili because I put lots of beans and corn in it.”

The Mannville Care Centre took first prize for the best chili dish. Louise and Rosanne Bohaichuk won a prize for the best pumpkin.

The aching feet and full tummies of volunteers are indicative enough of yet another successful annual Fall Supper event. J. R. Robson’s annual extracurricular fundraiser sold approximately 500 tickets putting proceeds towards the various athletic teams and drama club to pay for events and gear. Adults swarmed the school’s industrial kitchen the day prior, preparing desserts, peeling and cutting veggies, and gathering equipment and supplies.

On Thursday, October 22, the buzz continued as the concourse was decorated and converted into a huge serving and eating area, the staff room was converted into a dessert storage and distribution space, the Foods classroom was converted into a food preparation and cooking lab, and the science wing was converted into the admission area.

Students, staff and parents assumed duties such as salad mixing, veggie cooking, refilling drink stations, serving seniors, table cleanup, collecting tickets, and aftermath cleanup and takedown. Without the help of many parents, staff, and

Our Elementary Students’ Union, the Grade 6’s, have been busy working on their grand reveal of the Elementary teams. They are very excited to share but are keeping their lips sealed when asked. Stay tuned... as the teams will be announced next week! They are also planning an elementary activity as part of their grand reveal!

The Grade 5 and 6 class took a little field trip across the school yard on October 19. After learning about the democracy, rights and freedoms, responsibilities, and the election process, Mrs. Hinton and Mrs. Riedel took their classes over to see the polling station at the recreational centre. After seeing how the voting processed worked they then headed back to the school and did a vote of their own.

An extra nod of acknowledgement and gratitude goes to Mrs. Hart: as though fulfilling her roles as Foods teacher, career counselor, and also full-time farmer didn’t keep her busy enough, she began placing orders, planning for Fall Supper weeks in advance and was behind the scenes at every part of the process to ensure that the huge event ran smoothly.

Recently recognized for their service and contribution to J. R. Robson are Lorne Maier, Jeannie Sorochan, and Beverly Buchanan. Mr. Maier, our senior high Social Studies teacher and football coach, has now been aboard the Marauder ship for 15 years! Mrs. Sorochan, a member of our custodial team, has been on board for 20 years! As for Mrs. Buchanan, she’s been part of the crew for 25 years (she started when she was 15); this fall she was nominated by several colleagues for the Support Staff Award for her creative, charismatic and compassionate involvement with children and adults alike.

Last week, renowned author Sigmund Brouwer visited us in the morning and spoke to the school. Native to Alberta and selling 3 million books worldwide, he spoke of the impact of writing and reading as a pastime. He complimented his speaking and stories with audio and visual presentations as well as student involvement.

VIBE’s “Just Say Hi” campaign came and went last week. Students were in a frenzy of excitement to take on their challenge of collecting all the different colors of “HI” pins from various people and businesses within the community and area.

The campaign, held every year, has been designed in efforts to encourage students to say hello and strike conversations with members of the community. Students who collected the whole set of pins were entered into a draw for prizes. Our VIBE Coach, Mrs. Speck, spoke with each class to explain the contest and encourage the participation.

Cameron Webb and Braden Gourley were in Grande Prairie last weekend competing at the Provincial level crosscountry running. Here Cameron achieved his personal goal and finished 29 of 114 competitors! Braden Gourley finished 91 of 140, shaving off 1 minute from his

previous year’s personal record while at the same time running an extra kilometer than his previous year! Congratulations, runners!

Vermilion’s football team is in Round 2 of playoffs! The Marauders’ 58-34 victory against Athabasca 2 weekends ago put us on home turf against Bonnyville last weekend.

J. R. Robson’s Student Vote count put Progressive Conservatives in lead at 150 votes, Liberals at 27, Libertarians at 14, NDP at 13, Green at 8, Obama at 4, and Trump at 1.

The elementary students enjoyed hearing stories from the storyteller that visited us last week. She shared stories about how the whole world got sun, how the fox has a black mouth, how the possum has no fur on its tale, and how the buzzard lost all of its feathers on the top of its head.

She also shared another story about how the jackrabbit got its ears stretched and that’s why today they have such long ears. She made a paper spider web during her story and a drawing of a bunny to go with the second story she told. We got to see a spider hand puppet, a drum, and some extra props to make the stories even more engaging. The students were very interested and involved in the stories.

Congratulations to Kalen Kaziechko for guessing the correct weight of the pumpkin donated to Mannville School from the Preikschas-Flaathen family. Kalen guessed 85 pounds and won a family pass to the PAC movie night. The pumpkin is now on its way to the Home Ec room.

The BTJHAA Volleyball Northerns take place on Wednesday, October 28. Our junior girls will be playing at Marwayne and our junior boys will play at Vermilion.

If they are successful they will continue onto the finals on November 4 at Kitscoty and Wainwright.

We will be holding our Grade 9 Leadership Supper and Secondary Awards on Friday, November 6. Supper tickets are available from local businesses, Grade 9 students, and the school office. Donations of potatoes and carrots to the supper would be appreciated. Please let Mrs. Wagner know if you would like to donate.

Tricks, Tips and Trails

Savana Deibert, exhibited integrity as she powered up hills and ran through the trails during the BTPS Junior High Cross Country Finals, October 8. With determination, she completed 2 km in 11:37: 05 and placed 16th in her age category. Fantastic job, Savana!

It takes more than just physical ability to compete at the provincial level. Kenedi Wood and Keagan Rewuski found out how much mental ability they needed to put forth to race with about 144 other seasoned runners in their categories on October 17.

Pony up! Paynton Bensmiller continues to ride and present great showmanship. Paynton is now the Canadian Trick Riding Association Junior Champion for 2015. Paynton also won the “act of the year” riding with Jen Sych and Piper Yule for 2015. Finally, she won the “Rising Star” award which is given to the rider who shows the most potential in all areas of trick riding, including ability, showmanship and horsemanship. We are proud of you, Paynton!

The Senior Boys’ team have been diligently honing their volleyball skills over the last few weeks. As the paper goes to print, they will be putting their competencies to the test in the tournament at Lloydminster Composite. We wish you boys luck!

Victory Puts Marauders Into Consolation Final

After clawing their way back from a 14-point deficit in the first quarter, the Vermilion Marauders took the lead with two touchdowns in the third and scored a final time with 1:28 left on the clock to secure a 37-33 win and a berth in to the Wheatland League consolation final.

That final will be next Saturday in Cold Lake. After the game, the team also learned the winner of next week’s game will have more than a trophy on the line. The victor will represent Tier 4 in the provincial playoffs.

Bonnyville jumped out to the lead with a touchdown on their first possession. They recovered the ball on their opening short kickoff and used five plays to open the score. The Voyageurs used the short kick for every kickoff except one.

They’d score again with 43 seconds left in the quarter. Their drive featured a second and 20 pass that took Bonnyville from their own 52 to the Marauder 35. Two penalties on the same play against the Marauders-unnecessary roughness and illegal substitution--gave the Voyageurs first and goal from the 10. Isaac Amalia would score.

An interception—more accurately Devon Winter wrestled the ball out of the Bonnyville receiver’s hand—gave the Marauders a first down on their own 31 on the first play of the second quarter. Chandler Nelson’s 11-yard catch moved the ball to the 42.

Then Brandon Maida hit Donovan Yaceyko with a short pass that Yaceyko turned into a 68-yard touchdown.

Celebrations were momentarily on hold with two flags on the field. Offside against Bonnyville was declined and Yaceyko converted the touchdown to put the Marauders on the board with seven points.

As in the quarterfinal game in Athabasca, Yaceyko would score all of the Marauder points: 5 touchdowns, a field goal and four converts. It was his second consecutive game with five TDs. The Marauders defense forced Bonny-

ville to punt on the following series. On first and a long 9, Maida hit Tanner Throndson inside the Bonnyville 20. He was brought down on the 13. A fumbled handoff in the backfield followed by an incomplete pass, brought out the field goal unit. Yaceyko kicked a 33-yard field goal putting the Marauders to within four.

Bonnyville responded with another fiveplay touchdown drive for a 21-10 lead. The Marauders would narrow the gap with another Yaceyko touchdown, this time a 46-yard pass and run with just less a minute left on the clock.

The last minute of the half was “interesting”. With five seconds left Bonnyville was second and four on the Marauder 46. After an incomplete pass, an official initially put the ball down on what would have been a first down. The play didn’t go ahead and the ball was moved back four yards to the line of the scrimmage. Bonnyville took a time out. Another pass attempt was incomplete.

With no time was showing on the clock, the half should have ended with the Marauders taking over on downs. However, the Marauders were given another play, a pass that was intercepted.

The third quarter was all Marauders with two more Yaceyko touchdowns, a 65-yard punt return at 5:40 and a 90-yard gallop with 1:02 left in the quarter.

For the second time Marauder fans had to silence their TD celebration as they waited to see what the flags on the field meant. The call was holding against the Voyageurs and the touchdown stood, however Yaceyko’s convert was wide. But the Marauders had their first lead of the afternoon, 23-20.

They added to the lead capitalizing on a fumble recovery deep in their own end.

Starting at his own 10, Yaceyko scrambled through an opening, shook off tacklers and galloped 90 yards for the major and added the convert for a nine-point lead, 30-21.

Bonnyville would score two touchdowns in the final quarter, first on a punt return at 7:30 bringing them to within 3 points after

a missed convert, at 27-30. They used the short kick and started from midfield. The longest play of the drive was a 40-yard reception by Jonas Church to inside the Marauder five. The convert was again wide, but the Voyageurs had a 33-30 lead.

Again, Bonnyville would deploy the short kick, but the ball sailed right into the arms of Ryley Bates. At the three minute, warning the Marauders were second and 8 from the Bonnyville 37. They lost five yards on a time count putting them second and 12. Yaceyko brought the Marauders to first down on the 27. Brayden Chilibeck almost got away for a major. He was hauled down at the eight, putting the Marauders first and goal.

Those final eight yards were hard fought.

Offensive coach Earl Weidner described it as a character touchdown. It initially appeared Chilibeck had scored on second and three as one official indicated touchdown. However, the Marauders were faced with third down and less than one. Inside of going up the middle, Yaceyko went wide and scored with 1:28 on the clock. He also added the convert giving the Marauders a 37-33 lead.

Following another impressive kickoff by David Wilson, the Voyageurs found themselves starting on their own 36. Using a prevent defense with the safety deep, the Marauders were ready for long passes.

The first was incomplete over everyone’s head, and the second only netted a couple of yards.

The Marauders defense weren’t fooled by a faked handoff and took over on downs on the 48. On the first play, the Voyageurs intercepted the ball but were called for holding and unnecessary roughness taking them back to their own 25.

Two unsuccessful passes followed with the second was almost intercepted. On the third down play, back-up quarterback Justyn Davidson had the ball stripped from him as he ran downfield. It was recovered by another Voyageur but they weren’t close to the first down giving the Marauders the ball back with 13 seconds on the clock.

Maida took a knee on the first play, and then the players watched time expire on the clock before celebrating their win of perseverance.

Bonnyville was their first opponent of the season, and the Marauders showed a lot of improvement on both sides of the ball…The head referee might have created some room for stirring the pot on the field. About midway in the first quar-

ter he warned Bonnyville about unsportsmanlike conduct after words and shoves were exchanged. The warning would be repeated to both teams and benches just past midway in the second quarter. No penalties were called… There was a big uproar when 10 yards were initially marched off for a Bonnyville offside that should have only been five.

It was corrected before play was whistled in…Bonnyville fans were loud including a super fan with a drum and horn.

They were loudest after the Voyageurs’ punt return touchdown convert. The convert was wide with a flag on the play.

Marauder lineman Scott Zielinski was on the ground near the goal line. Bonnyville parents were calling for him to be ejected.

Player Aaron Goulet came to the sidelines to tell the fans to quiet down. The flag was unnecessary roughness against the Voyageurs…Noah Sanson and Nelson continued to make their presence felt on special teams providing most of those tackles…Winter had one of his best games as a Marauder including his interception, a knockdown and tight coverage on Voyageur receivers.

store with a public washroom, make sure people with handicaps can use it, if you don’t have the space, at least put bars in to help people get up and down.

If you notice an ‘able bodied’ person getting out of a car in a handicap parking lot with the correct plate or sign, leave them be. If a person comes to you and tells you they need help with something, reaching or lifting, help out without a million questions first.

People with authority, such as - teachers, bosses, parents- believing young people who come to them with doctors notes and tales of oddities. These things may seem obvious to you, but to some they may not be.

But above all, the best thing you can do is research. If a friend (or worker or student) uses a medical term you don’t know, and doesn’t explain so you can understand, please- look it up. Search the web for information. http://invisibleillnessweek.com/ is a good website to look up. Simple searches turn up articles like: “The extra burdens faced by young people with chronic illness” on Psychology Today’s website. It talks about the stress and worries that the young people have relating to their illness. You can understand so much about the people who suffer from these illnesses by just reading a few articles.

My goal with this article isn’t huge.

I don’t think this one piece of writing is going to change thousands of lives or be a fix all for anyone’s problems.

The only thing I want is to make others think. Is there someone you know who had told you about the issues they’re going through? Did you make an effort to understand? When you see that ‘fine’ person using the handicap spot with proper tags, let them be. If I can make one person’s day just a tiny bit better that is enough for now. I’ll work on the rest later.

I hope I’ve gotten through to you just a bit, made you think for a moment. If you’ve read this far, thank you. Thank you for allowing me to show you what the world is like in my shoes for a few moments, and I hope you don’t forget 3” wide version it.

The summer solstice has come and gone, the days are definitely getting shor ter, the geese are filling up for their long journey south, and everyone is talking about the long awaited election. A lot of people voted in the advance polls this time, is that an indication of unrest and dissatisfaction, or have people made their decisions early and want to move on to something else!

Several teams of whist players from Vermilion went to Viking on September 23.Two teams, Lil Sweet ’s and

M a r j O s i n c h u k ’s p l a c e d 2 n d a n d 3rd respectively, their names will be inscribed on the Lakeland Seniors Game Association plaque for 2015.

The First Soup and Sandwich Lunch was held on September 30 with 33 people enjoying homemade soup and sandwiches. The next Soup & Sandwich Lunch will be October 28.

Nothing To Beef About At J.R. Robson’s Fall Supper

There was a change in the menu from the usual fowl to beef at this year’s annual J.R. Robson’s Fall Supper which also included a variety of gluten-free options.

“We thought we’d try something different this year,” said Monique Hart, J.R. Robson teacher and Supper organizer.

Seventy-seven students volunteered to help out.

“Every student brings along one parent to help out too,” added Hart.

This year 640 people were served during

two seatings in the school’s concourse.

“This is the major fundraiser for the year,” said Hart who guesstimated this year’s total will be between $2000 and $3000.

“It offsets the costs of tournaments for the junior volleyball team and senior basketball team as well as the yearly production of the Drama Club.”

Principal Lindsey Bates said the supper went very well and that he was impressed with the turnout for the event.

Attendee Natasha Watkins said she came out to the event to eat and to support the community.

The concourse and halls at J.R. Robson spilled over as 640 people were served at this year’s J.R. Robson Fall Supper on Oct. 22.

The Vermilion Voice | October 26, 2015 Band In The Sand With Chad Brownlee A crowd of roughly 1,800 people attended Band in the Sand to watch Chad Brownlee perform in the Equine Centre at Lakeland College on Saturday night, October 24.

“It’s our third year putting on this event now. Our Agribusiness Marketing class put on this event tonight as part of their big project. It involves a lot of team work. It puts Lakeland on the map a bit more. It’s very cool that we have people coming here from Ontario tonight,” said Event General Manager Carson Reid.

“It’s a big weekend for Lakeland College. A lot of the work done tonight is done by our agricultural student clubs and those clubs receive back 100 per cent of the profit from tonight, which really helps them to get additional learning outside of the classroom at college. It’s sponsored by New Holland, so they provide some of the seed money for the event,” said Lakeland College Instructor Robert Dixon. “It’s all about living learning and the students get more experience from organizing the event themselves.”

Fall Classic Rodeo Students from other rodeo clubs travelled to Vermilion for the weekend to participate in the Classic Fall Rodeo hosted by Lakeland College on October 23 and 24.

The losses are star ting to slowly pile up for the junior Tigers as back to back losses and some good fortune leaves them in 5th place in the NEAJBHL standings. A slow start out of the gate for Vegreville, Onion Lake and Saddle Lake has been a blessing for the Tigers as they have a busy few upcoming weeks to close out their lengthy front loaded road schedule.

The yellow and black travelled to St. Paul on October 16 for a date with the Canadiens. The Tigers turned the puck over on several occasions leaving rookie goalie Connor Thompson to stop several breakaway and odd man rushes. Unfortunately Thompson couldn’t stop them all as the Canadiens backed by two power play goals and a shorthanded goal took the wind out of a possible comeback.

The Line of Dennill, VanGenderen and Bardoel continued their hot play with two goals in the 6-2 loss.

The home opener was a welcomed sight for the Tigers on October 17 as Cold Lake coming off a 5-4 OT loss the night before to Frog Lake, entered Vermilion. Turnovers proved costly again for the Tigers as a large and loud home crowd did all they could to energize the Tigers. A late empty net

goal for the Ice secured a 5-3 victory.

A large 50/50 pot and several food donations for the Vermilion Food Bank capped of f the night as the Tigers prepared for the big week upcoming as they visit Killam, Cold Lake and Saddle Lake.

The Tigers did welcome back veteran blueliner Colby Pugh this week. Pugh has recently returned home to Wainwright and the hockey bug caught up with him. Captain Spencer Ross also appears to be getting closer to returning from a hand injur y that has had him sidelined the last few weeks. In addition the Tigers have juggled the roster and brought in hulking forward Nolan Blair. Blair last played hockey for the Vermilion Rock and studies at Lakeland College. He will be the third overage player, joining veterans Spencer Ross and Trent Dutchak.

The Tigers return to home action on Sunday, November 1 as the 8th place Rangers roll into Vermilion for a 2 p.m. afternoon start. This marks the start of a 5 out of 6 home game stand for the Tigers.

Six boxes of non-perishable food items and a cash donation of approximately $100 were delivered to the Vermilion Food Bank on Oct. 23 by Jr. B. Tigers’ players, Captain Spencer Ross (L) and Chase Fletcher (R). Food Bank representative, Derek Collins (M) said now is a great time to receive the donation as supplies usually dwindles after summer. “A lot of food banks in the area are seeing an increase in demand around this time of year,” added Collins. President of the Jr. B. Tigers, Ray Bourner said the board has decided to make the food drive an annual event for the team’s season home opener. “This is our first year doing this. We decided two weeks ago to go ahead with it. Next year we will try and bring a sponsor on board,” said Bourner. “It’s been a tough year for people. It’s a worthwhile cause.” Photo Shannon O’Connor

Women’s Group In Vermilion “Winding Down”

The Chairwoman of the Vermilion Women’s Connection, Jan Schock, announced at the Bountiful Har vest breakfast and silent auction on Oct. 21, that it would be the last regular monthly break fast meeting for the group. Schock has moved to Edmonton and said there is no one to take the helm. “ We have an ageing group,” she added.

The Vermilion Women’s Connection, which was formerly the Christian Women’s Club, was first established in Vermilion nearly 30 years ago. Ella Ey ben has been a mem ber for 29 years. “ People are get ting older and younger people have their families to take care of. I wouldn’t say that it is being disbanded, but it’s definitely winding down,” said Eyben.

Schock added that t wo women’s connection groups have disbanded in Lloydminster and Wainwright.

The Vermilion Women’s Connection supports Stonecroft Ministries Canada (a national Christian charity).

S c h o c k s ai d s he was ha p py to hear that Stonecraft Ministries is finding new ways to tr y and connect to

younger women.

Guest speaker Judy Mary Llewellyn remarked during her speech that it is a different generation now.

“We’ve had a good long run,” said executive member Ruby McMinis. “So many young women are working now and aren’t available in the mornings to meet. Our society is changing and so is the way the ‘Word’ is being shared.”

Schock said the next get together will be a Salad Supper in June 2016 and that she’s hoping to invite some original founders and members of the Wainwright and Lloydminster groups as special guests.
