Conservative party candidate Shannon Stubbs promised that should she be elected, seniors would not be living in poverty.

N D P c a n d i d ate D u a n e Z ar a s k a defended the NDP party saying that the party has brought positive change to Alberta and that NPD’s inherited a mess with regards to the oil industry. “People who blame the NDP party for the oil downturn don’t understand that it’s a world crisis.”

Libertarian Robert McFadzean promises to look at areas in the government system where there is a lot of waste.

“Everybody would be better off with a private sector,” said McFadzean. “A Libertarian government would look for a better use of taxpayer funds. With lowers taxes you would get a lot more investment in the private sector and more employment opportunities would open.”

“I understand the relationship between energy development and the communities that surround it from my experience in the government department of energy

in the oil sands,” said Conservative party candidate Shannon Stubbs. “ The Conser vative g over nment, through the economic action plan, has focused on ensuring that the economy is in the very best position to provide jobs and the revenue that comes from taxes to provide the programs and services that we value,” added Stubbs.

Voters will ultimately decide who the next Lakeland Member of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons will be when they go to the polls on Election Day, October 19.

Annual Kitscoty Steak Fry To Raise Funds For New Rescue Truck

Attending the Kitscoty Fire Department’s Annual Steak Fry fundraiser just may “Help Save a Life.”

“We are in the process of building a new fire truck,” said Deputy Fire Chief, Daryl Jakubec. The truck is being made by the Winnipeg company Fort Garry Fire Trucks.

“The truck will be used outside the Village of Kitscoty,” added Jakubec. “We get a high number of accident calls on highways 897 and 16.”

The cost of the new rescue truck, when fully equipped, is $450,000. The County of Vermilion River has donated $75,000 Jakubec said.

“We have most of the equipment, but will be expanding our capabilities in the future.”

The truck itself is in the neighbourhood of $380,000.

“We are about $40,000 short of that.”

Last year’s fundraiser raised $20,000.

Jakubec said if they come close to duplicating that success, and combine the money that the firefighters from the Kitscoty Fire Department donate back, they should close the gap for the cost of the truck.

Volunteer firefighters get paid by the municipality when they go on active calls to offset the cost of time lost from work.

“In a year our department usually donates back around $15,000,” added Jakubec.

The Annual Kitscoty Steak Fry has been going on for about eight years. This year’s fundraiser will be held at the Kitscoty Community Hall on Friday, Oct. 16.

Cocktails are at 6 p.m. and supper is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 a person, or $320 for a table. There will be a silent auction and door prizes. Tickets may be purchased at the Kitscoty Village office or from any fire member.

NDP Signs Vandalized $200 Reward Offered

Darcey Shyry, the team leader for the NDP in Vermilion, said 14 NDP signs were stolen after the All Candidate’s Forum at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Thursday, Oct. 9, and more signs were stolen on Oct. 10. Shyry also had pictures of other NDP signs that have been spray painted, thrown in trees, and run over. “This is anti-democratic, unfair and it is cheating,” he added. Shyry said that the Lakeland College campus security is investigating signs that have been tampered with on campus. As of last week the RCMP were investigating the theft of four NDP signs prior to the incidents on Oct. 9 and 10, and in a press release reminded the public that it is a criminal offence to tamper with or remove these signs and if caught may result in charges. Shyry is personally offering a $100 reward to anyone who provides information resulting in charges being laid. An anonymous supporter has also pledged another $100 for a total $200 reward. I guess I never realized back then, how much I loved my place on the Grizzly Bear Coulee or how very fortunate I was to be able to pick up a gun and call my dog and go for a walk in those awesome coulees.

The Grizzly Bear came from the Nor th West and angled South east around two sides of my farmstead, and a feeder Coulee ran along the e a s t s i d e. I t wa s a s d e e p a s t h e Grizzly Bear, but not as wide!! I was surrounded by such marvelous country to hike in on three sides.

In the spring just after breakup, I’d walk the creeks hunting beaver and gophers, later I’d be on the scout for berries or probably checking the fences.

You really didn’t need an excuse; just the thrill of being out there with gun and dog was always a memo rable experience. Every season had its wonders of sights and scents, you always were entertained.

I always associate the colour orange, fall leaves and pumpkins with October.

I developed this recipe for Pumpkin Cake several years ago, as a pumpkin alternative to carrot cake. It is still a favourite of mine, except now I grind the pumpkin seeds, and I think that it is better.

I have recently developed the gluten-free pumpkin muffin recipe, for those that want to also enjoy some pumpkin goodness.

For ease I use a premixed gluten-free flour mix. You can also substitute 1 cup of glutenfree pancake mix for the flour.

Pumpkins have an abundance of vitamin A, in fact only 1/2 cup of pumpkin contains 100 percent of our required vitamin A. Pumpkin is a good source of fiber, iron, vitamin C, vitamin E & potassium. Pumpkin is low in calories.

Oats and cinnamon help to stabilize blood sugar, which may be beneficial for people

That time my dog wasn’t along, and I watched them play for spell before a vagrant whiff of me sent them ducking for cover.

It was my fortune to go side trips to check on the Saskatoon and goose berries and choke and pin cherries, they all flourished along those coulees and lent their perfume to the air you could enjoy as you took in the wonderful scenery. I really felt gifted to be there.

Yes, I kept a lookout for those glacial rolls, those round stones and buffalo heads, native artifacts that were often s e e n i n my t r ave l s . We eve n h ad prickly pear cactus that blooms and I can remember encountering them bac k in the c hildhoo d d ays where we might have been barefoot. Not a

pleasant memory.

As most of my coulee was used for pasture, a good par t of my life was spent checking the cattle and making sure the bulls were home and no one was ailing. Later, I used a trail bike for transportation, but, to do the rougher pasture of the country you mostly had to be on foot.

Whenever time permitted, I would avail myself the privilege of spending time in that old coulee, spring, summer and fall. Once the harvest had started and the leaves changing into their fall colours it was especially wonderful to sit and admire all the different, red, orange, yellow and the contrasting silver willows.

Yes, and the hawks would ride the thermals created by the wind rising up the coulee sides. Learning to fly like that was one of the reasons I felt I had to take the lessons and try.

Once the har vest star ted the chances for time to hike were limited to rainy wet spells that gave you a chance to perhaps harvest a partridge once the season opened. That was a treat to look forward to.

Enjoying Pumpkin

with diabetes, insulin resistant metabolic syndrome and obesity.

Pumpkin seeds are a very good source of manganese, magnesium and phosphorus.

They also contain healthy mono-saturated fat, iron, zinc and omega 3’s.

This recipe calls for ground pumpkin seeds.

I grind them in my coffee grinder. For the cake I like using whole grain barley flour because barley is a grain that has a low glycemic index, making it a carbohydrate that is beneficial for stable blood sugar and weight loss. Barley is a good source of selenium, serotonin and manganese.

Pumpkin Cake with Cream Cheese Icing 4 eggs 1/2 cup olive or canola oil 1 cup brown sugar 1 can pumpkin 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1.5 teaspoon ginger 1/2 teaspoon cloves 1 cup whole grain flour such as barley

or wheat 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup quick cooking rolled oats 1/4 cup ground pumpkin seeds 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Whisk one egg in a bowl and then add in part of the oil, keep adding the eggs and oil alternately.

Add the brown sugar, pumpkin, vanilla and the spices and whisk or stir to blend.

Add all the dry ingredients at once and then stir to blends.

I baked it in a 7 x 13 pan at 325 degrees for 40 minutes.

Cool and ice with cream cheese icing. To make the icing beat together with an electric mixer 1 250 gram package of cream cheese at room temperature, 2 tablespoons of melted butter and 1 and a half cups of powdered icing sugar.

Gluten Free Pumpkin Muffins 1/2 raisins 1/3 cup water 1/2 cup butter

Once I became familiar with the idea of varmint calling, I would stop in a likely location and do the wounded rabbit squeal that the “burnam brothers” call imitated. Now, if you’ve never been in that situation, I have to tell you the results can leave you with your hear t pounding with excitement. It really does work!!

Well, yes and with harvest done and the cows up on the stubble cleaning up any missed grain and grass around the fields. Usually by then there was the excitement of looking for deer scrapes and evidence of the bucks polishing their antlers on a small sapling.

I really liked to check on the patterns they were using to travel, feed and do their mating rituals. Yes, it was just a matter of going for a walk and enjoying the country in all its seasons and really appreciating the fact that I was able to do the walking and seeing.

These are such wonderful memories to cherish as I realize I can never do that anymore. Like it says, “Smell the flowers and enjoy the scene, because you may not pass this way again”!!

1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 14oz can pumpkin 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup gluten free flour mix 1/2 cup ground pumpkin seeds or ground oatmeal 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/2 cup dry oatmeal Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Boil the raisins in the water for a few minutes, set aside to cool and then drain.

Using an electric mixer cream the sugar and butter together, beat in the eggs, then beat in the pumpkin and vanilla.

Measure the remaining ingredients, including the oatmeal in to the bowl and then beat in until blended. Stir in the raisins.

Spoon into 12 muffins and bake at 350 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes.

Serve as is or ice with cream cheese icing.

Wow another year has passed us by and here we are celebrating Thanksgiving again! It does not seem like a year since I sat down to do my Thanksgiving editorial last year. Where has the time gone.

Last year when I wrote about Thanksgiving I gave a little synopsis of how it all came to be.

This year, I think I will take a different approach and speak of all the things we have as a country to be thankful for, and why we should be thankful to live in Canada and work my way down to the few personal things I am feeling rather grateful for this year.

Firstly, our country as a whole, every single Canadian, even though we are going through a rough patch with our economy, should be thankful for our rights and freedoms.

We live in a country where we do not have to fear being punished for expressing our views about certain topics. We live in a country where we can protest without fear of brutality or genocide being inflicted on us because we do not agree with everything our government does or says.

You should feel thankful if you are an immigrant to be able to live in a country, which under most circumstances, lets you continue your cultural beliefs and traditions. Canada has such a wide diversity of different cultures and is proud of them.

We should feel thankful for our spectacular health and educational systems, even though they have issues, they are still one of best in the world.

We should all be thankful, even though elections are a pain in the butt, that we

have the option to vote for our government.

We live in a free society where we are not under dictatorship, and that is something I am very thankful for.

We should all be thankful that we can walk down the street, for the most part, and not have to worry about a car bomb or any type of bomb detonating and killing us.

Many people in parts of the world live with that fear each and every second of the day.

As for our agricultural community, while I know not all had a bountiful harvest, I think we need to be thankful that the harvest for some was not as disastrous as expected. The rains arrived, even if it was just for a short period, but enough to produce some hay to help keep cattle fed over the winter months.

On a personal note, I feel as though I have been blessed with a rather good year and feel like this is a great time to express my gratitude.

I came from working at a place which brought me down each and every day.

A place that made me feel incompetent and stupid, to a place where yes; I work some pretty long and sometimes very stressful hours but is worth all of it. I work at a job that I have grown to love and feel confident in. I work with a group of people who not only are my co-workers, but have become what I consider friends and family-like. I have Sue, my boss, who sometimes drives me bonkers; as I am sure I do to her as well, but in a good way, as I can go home and giggle about her constant questions and checking. She is one of the most kind, compassionate individuals I have ever met and: so enjoy having her in my life I am thankful for my family and friends!

I d o n’ t b e li eve in coincidence. When I meet someone for the first time, I prefer to think it’s time for me to meet that person. When I encounter a new challenge, it’s the right time for me to either embrace or run from it, as the case may be.

Last week, I lamented an absence of inspiring oratory from participants in the Longest Election Ever. I suggested that we, the expectant voters----at least those who don’t automatically vote for the same guys every time, no matter what good or evil they may mete out upon us---might still be waiting for a sign. We might be withholding our decision until someone inspired us. Until their words stirred something within besides an inclination to hit the mute button so as to silence their voices delivering a robotic, repetitive

There was a brief intro by Olympian Kayaker, Adam Van Koeverden, followed with an eloquent speech by Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau, and then Justin Trudeau. You know, Man With Good Hair But Not Ready, according to Conservatives. His message struck a number of key points, but what lingers in the aftermath is the undeniably inclusive, inspiring, intelligent, hopeful, warmth of it all. Yes, even toward his arch rivals, the Conservatives, who he identified as not the enemy, but ‹our neighbours›, fellow Canadians striving for universally common goals in a united Canada where

Next, they were off to zones, hosted at the beautiful Ross Lake Provincial Park, where they all improved their times dramatically. Over the past few weeks this young team of Grade 9, 10 and 11 players, have learned to work as a team and displayed their strong suits. The crew packs some serious talents of hitting and blocking, setting and unexpected tipping, strong serving, and directing of balls to the holes. The team’s next tournament is October 17 at Lloyd Comp. Keep up the wonderful volleyball techniques! “ Man overboard,” is a statement never uttered with the junior girls’ volleyball team. They learn together and play together. “I’ve got your back,” is more likely what you’ve heard. They operated their positions like a well-oiled engine during their recent games with Marwayne and St. Jeromes. Keep practicing those skills and you’ll be sailing to destinations

Was there rhetoric? Definitely. Were there a few digs at Harper›s failures over his long tenure? Of course. Politics demands it. But there was no talk of fear, suspicion, or anything close to personal denigration targeting leaders of opposing political parties or people of certain cultural backgrounds. No talk of establishing bizarre snitch lines reminiscent of 1950s McCarthyism. In its place, there was inspiration, encouragement to strive for better, a challenge to strengthen community, to acknowledge and celebrate the unique diversity that is Canada.

There was a mutual exchange of admiration between attendees and Trudeau. A forging, a beacon symbolizing hope for a future mutually beneficial partnership.

Something about that exchange made me glad I›d taken time to listen, to consider the implications. To imagine possibilities.

Competing against some tough teams, they managed to attack their way to a 3rd place finish in Cold Lake and a first place consolation finish in St. Paul. Way to go, sailors!!

Christopher Columbus once said, “You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

These students have shown the courage to direct their ships out into the ocean of dreams and steer them through the waves of discovery mastering their skills as they go. We can definitely say they have the gained the courage to lose sight of the shore but not of their goals and they won’t be disappointed by the things they never did.

This year we will be hosting two fundraisers (one in the fall and one in the spring) with the proceeds going towards school field trips. The fall fund raiser will be with Coco Brooks Pizza (there are other food choices besides pizza) and will run from October 8-21. Pick up for the sale will be on November 4. We are hoping that all families are able to support this fundraiser in some small way.

The Jaguars had a wonderful end to their Cross Country season. This year

they attended two races, one in Riverdale and one in Vermilion. Each one of our students demonstrated a strong sense of discipline as they improved their running times by over a minute throughout the course of the season. Thank you so much to all the parents who supported their children.

VES is trying to walk to Disneyland.

We are walking laps around the inside of the school every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at lunch hour to see if we can walk enough laps to reach Disneyland, which is 2775 kilometers from Vermilion.

Ten laps around the inside of the school is one kilometer so we have a lot of laps to make. As the laps are walked, the kids take the time to talk with other students

from different grades and staff members that don’t regularly teach them. Parents and community members are invited to join us for our walk every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 12:05-12:30.

There are still some yearbooks for sale from the 2014-15 school year. If you missed ordering one last year and would like a copy, they are available at the office for $20.

We’re looking forward to our next races in B.C.” The crew’s first races were held in Edmonton on Sept. 26, where the novice women’s quad took home gold. Their gold streak continued Oct. 3-4 in Calgary where the novice women’s and men’s quad, senior men’s quad and novice men’s four took home gold medals. The novice women’s eight took a close second place at the Edmonton competition.

“This competition also included very good exhibition races for our senior women’s four and senior men’s four. Both crews are bound for the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships,” says Walsh.

Congratulations to Zach Black - sixth Junior Boys, Kaylie Krys – ninth Intermediate Girls and Anna Ulrich first Intermediate Girls. All three runners have qualified for Provincials, which will be held in Grande Prairie on October 17. Good luck!

was put into the rocket and then pumped with air before it was launched. All of the rockets were spectacular and some even made it all the way across the track or to the tennis court. The elementary students were very impressed with the rockets. Well done, Grade 9!

On Monday, October 5 and Tuesday, October 6, St. Jerome’s students took part in “Bus Safety”. Each class took part in a presentation, which reviewed safety rules and bus evacuation. Grade 3 student Avery said some of the rules that were important were no eating or drinking on the bus because you could choke if the driver has to stop suddenly, and remember always sit and keep the aisles cleared. She enjoyed practicing an emergency evacuation from the backdoors jumping down with assistance and clearing away from the bus at least 10

steps.

The students and staff of St. Jerome’s are showing their thankfulness at this time of year by bringing in donations for the Vermilion Food Bank. Students are encouraged to bring in a non-perishable food item this week to add to what was collected last week. On Friday Student Council will see which house, Cartier, Fraser or Mackenzie, donated the most food.

Mr. MacMillan took 16 Grade 11 and 12 students to Lloyd Composite High School on Thursday, October 8 for the College and Career Fair. Students were able to gain information about a variety of occupations and college programs during the morning session.

World’s Teacher Day was a ver y special day for the staff of St. Jerome’s School as they were treated to coffee

and donuts from the Grade 10 Leadership Class. It was a wonderful surprise at morning break to be able to enjoy such wonderful treats. Thank you!

Another busy and successful weekend of volleyball took place on October 2 and 3. The Sr. Boys won Silver in St. Paul, Sr. Girls lost out in the Semi-finals, Grade 8/9 Boys won Gold and the Grade 6/7 Boys won Bronze in Kitscoty, and the Grade 9 girls won Silver and the grade 8 Girls won Bonze in their home tournament. Come out and cheer the Jr. High Boys on during their home tournament on October 16 and 17.

Eat East Of Edmonton -A Success For Local Culinary Tourism

Culinary tourism is on the rise in Alberta and Eat East of Edmonton is leading the way to bringing local food to the spotlight. To help enlighten the general public about culinary tourism Go East of Edmonton Regional Tourism Organization (RTO) in partnership with the Battle River Alliance for Economic Development (BRAED) held Eat East of Edmonton - A Showcase of Local Food in Viking on September 30th.

“The planning for the event started when we partnered with BRAED to build a data base for local food producers, restaurants and people who supply foods to restaurants within the BRAED and RTO area,” said Cheryl Livingstone chair of Go East of RTO. “Tonight was the launch of that and to let people know what we have done in the last year and the activities that have taken place.”

All of the foods served at the event were locally produced and those attending the event were able to sample locally made cheese from Tiras Dairies in Camrose, Bison meatballs from Vermilion Packers and wine from Birds and Bees winery from Brousseau to name a few.

Livingstone has been involved in Go East of RTO since its inception about three years ago and it is a regional tourism organization which promotes tourist facilities east of Edmonton. As an owner and operator of Red Feather Ridge with her husband Doug their dream of culinary tourism started nine years ago.

“We started attending tourism organizational meetings and we have been open seven years now. I wish I had done it when I was 30 instead of now as it is hard work but we very much enjoy every minute of it,” said Livingstone.

between Edmonton and Lloydminster, Camrose to Bodo and then to Smoky Lake east towards Cold Lake.

“We have had some major people support it such as Mary Bailey from The Tomato which is a magazine about local food and drink and Gail Hall who is a foodie and because they are interested then the people who follow them are also interested,” said Livingstone.

“Our plan next year is to move our Eat East tour and event further north although we haven’t yet decided how far north we will go. People would like to be involved and have indicated they would also like to be a part of the Eat East of Edmonton promotion.”

Gord Snyder who has been the main coordinator behind Eat East of Edmonton for the past two years was also pleased with the event.

“This evening we are celebrating two years of work on two major projects: the Eat East of Edmonton culinary trails and the data base.

The Go East regional tourism organization and partners have made a significant mark on the tourism industry in Alberta to date. Working together is the key to success in rural tourism,” said Snyder.

With the growing popularity of culinary tourism interest has also grown with municipalities and counties as they are also looking for ways to bring activities such as this into their communities. The partnership between Go East of RTO and BRAED just seemed to be a natural fit according to BRAED chair Arnold Hanson.

“Our group represents 29 communities in eastern Alberta and I look at it as we have the power to develop a tool box to invite people to do economic development in our area,” said Hanson. “Go East is one of those things that if we can bring people into our community it will maybe make an avenue to create a business. We were very happy to sponsor

this event because we think it is important - it brings people to rural AB. They say if you can get someone to visit your community and they see something they like they may come back and develop a business in that community. So if you have an idea we are open for business in this region.”

Also in attendance was local MLA Dr. Richard Starke who said tourism has always been a passion of his and he is thrilled with Go East of RTO and the plans they have for culinary tourism.

“At times like these when our economy is facing challenges we look for things like tourism to diversify our economy. One of the things I have always promoted is rural tourism as it is truly an untapped resource within our province and there is no better part of AB to go visit than the areas outside our big cities,” said Starke.

“The thing that makes rural tourism so great is that you will find some people who like to go to museums and some who want to do some recreational activity or biking and camping but what they all have in common is that they all have to eat. They all eat three times a day and so regardless of what activities they are in they have to eat and if we can add to the tourism experience a unique culinary experience to experience the foods that are produced in the places they are visiting it will certainly enhance their experience and that is a key part to a success-

ful tourism operation.”

The event capped off with a presentation

by Kevin Kisilevich of Go East of Edmonton tourism.

Kisilevich made several presentations on AB Culinary Tourism Alliance (ACTA) and updated the audience on recent activities in the region and across Alberta. A promotional video was also unveiled which was created

by Story Chaser Productions of the first Go East Culinary Trail which took place over the summer.

Those attending finished off the event by enjoyed a locally produced supper of turkey, cabbage rolls, vegetables, salads and pies.

The evening ended with four local producers sharing their experiences as business owners.

“It is important that our stories are shared as it lets people see the success behind the hard work. Culinary Tourism is hard work but when you listen to the success producers are now experiencing it makes you excited to see how this is going to continue to expand and grow,” said Kisilevich.

“We are just seeing the birth of this industry and it will continue to grow and prosper.

Compensation Available To Landowners And Farmers For Wetland Restoration With DUC

Ducks Unlimited Submitted

Drained sloughs could be a cash cow for farmers and landowners when they restore these wetland areas with Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC).

And there couldn’t be a better time. DUC is ramping up its presence and activity in Alberta in response to increased priority given to mitigating the effects of drought and flood conditions. Recently, the conservation organization and leader in wetland restoration received additional funding from the Government of Alberta’s Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program to restore more wetlands in Alberta. As a

result, DUC opened a new office in Strathmore and added more field and GIS technical staff to their wetland restoration team to expand their reach.

Two DUC wetland restoration programs best suited to farmers and landowners, particularly those who use their land for grazing and/or cropping, are the 10-year lease program and the Revolving Land Purchase (RLP) program. The 10-year lease program provides compensation to landowners based on current fair market value for the restored wetland area. DUC pays for all wetland restoration costs associated with a 10-year lease while allowing the landowner to manage the restored

area which may include haying or grazing.

Alternatively, the RLP program involves the purchase of land from landowners, restoration of wetland and upland habitat, and registration of a conservation easement on the land title. The land is then sold back to the local agricultural community with the assurance that valuable wetland function and natural ecosystems will be maintained for long-term benefit. Proceeds of the land sale are then used to fund more restoration projects by DUC. Wetlands, as proven by research, have the ability to store water, slow the release of water into surrounding streams and rivers, filter excess pollutants into water-

sheds, and recharge groundwater. They also serve as a water source for livestock and provide habitat for wildlife and waterfowl.

Landowners and farmers who have engaged in either DUC program report several benefits, and use them as part of their long-term land management strategies. They are also able to accrue a higher return on investment on land that was formerly viewed as unproductive.

Conser vation Program Specialist Bryon Wolters talked last week about the changes made where wetland restoration received additional funding from the Government of Alberta’s Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program to restore more wetlands in Alberta.

“Firstly, it’s really important to understand that the compensation is for wetlands that can be restored. If there is a wetland that previous landowners may have found to be drained for agricultural purposes, if we restore the hydrology by plugging up that drain, then we can compensate the landowners on the amount of acres that are rehydrated or covered up by water again,” said Wolters.

“Diamond Forever” Returns To Vermilion Shannon O’Connor Reporter

Jason Scott, a Neil Diamond performance ar tist, is looking for ward to returning to Vermilion for his dinner show, “Diamond Forever: A Celebration of Neil Diamond” at the Vermilion Royal Legion on Friday, Oct., 16. “It was a sell-out last year, and it was a ton of fun,” said Scott.

by Steve Tatone, the direc tor of a documentary called Diamond Mountain which features a total of 13 Neil Diamond impersonators from all around the world, including Ireland, Chile, Australia, the United States and Canada.

me, they wanted to choose me to be the one and the only Canadian Neil Diamond to be featured in this film.”

Scott has been performing his act for 17 years and before that signed a recording contract for his original music in the 19 8 0 s. Following the death of his producer, Brian MacLeod, former Chilliwack and Headpins band member, Scott’s U.S. distribution right were dropped.

“This isn’t just a movie about Neil Diamond impersonators. It’s about our back stories; our devastations and our triumphs,” said Scott. “ My stor y is the thread that runs through the entire film.”

The film’s working title was Play Me, but it has since been changed to Diamond Mountain.

It is the name of an obscure 20 year old Irish song said Scott. Tatone secured the rights from the Irish artist, Luka B lo om, who sent Tatone the master tracks. Tatone then recorded the song with singer and cast member Denny Svehla at Black Horse Studios in N a s hv ill e, w h ere N e il D iam o n d recorded his album, Tennessee Moon.

Scott said there is a lot of buzz around the movie in Hollywood and that there is talk of the song being nominated for a Golden Globe. “ We ’r e t i c k l e d a n d exc i t e d l i ke crazy.”

The film is presently being edited and will be ready for a preview by November said Scott. “ Steve’s g o ing to finish t he film and before anyone else gets it, Neil (Diamond) is going to see it. He’ll be back from his two-year world tour by then and the disc will be waiting for him when he gets back.”

“We’ll see what happens.

The film’s World Premiere will be part of a four-day Las Vegas extravaganza known as DiamondFest in April 2016.

“It’s not just for ‘Diamond heads’. It’s a very human story; it’s about redemption and it’s going to make everybody cheer,” said Scott.

“We don’t know if the man himself will be there,” said Scott referring to Neil Diamond. ”But he is very aware of the film.”

Scott added that his career as a Neil Diamond performance artist has been very rewarding.

“Neil’s iconic music touches everyone across the board. It never fails to amaze me how many people come to me and say, ‘I brought my kid kicking

and scratching.’ They’re the ones that are just above the Bieber stage but haven’t quite discovered the Beatles.

By the end of the show they are like, ‘ T h i s i s g r e at , I n eve r k n ew.’ S o, the converts really get me. It’s very rewarding.”

Scott said attendees can expect to be fully entertained at the upcoming show.

“There will be a lot of clap-a-long songs, dancing, audience interaction, humour and Neil Diamond history. I’ve got stories about origins of songs, I’m in the crowd as much as I’m on stage, then there’s the costuming...and it’s all backed up with high quality studio recorded tracks. Everyone leaves feeling great! It’s a really good time,” said Scott.

Tickets for the Friday, Oct. 16 event are $40 and can be purchased at the Legion. Ticket price includes admission and a chicken dinner. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., supper is at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Dewberry To Celebrate Rich Chuckwagon History

Lanie Parr, spokesperson for the Dewberry Community Pride Committee (a sub-committee of the Dewberry Ag Society), said when the committee got together and started talking about the history of chuckwagons in the area, they couldn’t believe how much talent Dewberry had.

With this history in mind, the Dewberry Community Pride Committee decided to pay tribute to the eleven chuckwagon drivers from the area with an Appreciation Night.

With a population of approximately 220 people, the Village of Dewberry has also proclaimed itself to be the Chuckwagon Driver Capital of Alberta.

“We just thought it would be very fitting because there isn’t another place in Alberta that has so many drivers,” said Parr. “We wanted to showcase the local talent we have.”

Eleven drivers will be honoured with street pole banners bearing their names: Allan Bensmiller, Bruce Craige, Harvey Brown, Rick Rainey, Warren Garnier, Buddy Bensmiller, David Bensmiller, Kurt Bens-

miller, Chance Bensmiller, Dallas Dyck, and Vern Nolin.

Three of these drivers have secured the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby championship a total of six times: Bruce Craig in 1981, Buddy Bensmiller in 1979, 1989, and 2003, and Kurt Bensmiller with back-to-back wins in 2014 and 2015.

According to Billy Melville, WPCA’s commentator, in 93 years, only 10 drivers have won back to back Rangeland Derby championship titles.

Parr said the unveiling of the banners and the dedications will begin at 7:30 p.m.

“All of the wagon drivers are expected to be there to accept this honour, with the exception of Allan Bensmiller and Harvey Brown who have sadly passed on,” added Parr.

Following the dedication of the banners, there will be a celebration for Kurt Bensmiller for successfully securing the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Championship for a second year in a row.

“The community couldn’t be more proud,” said Parr. Kurt’s sponsor, Tsuu T’ina First Nation, is expected to send a representative to join in the celebration.

Performing Arts Season Kicks Off With Terrific Energy!

The Allied Arts Performing Arts season began with a packed house at the Alumni Hall on October 3.

The Carolines delighted the crowd with a full and varied repertoire of new and classic country hits. Their rendition of “Any Time” tickled the back of our necks, and the Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty piece, “You’re the Reason our Kids are Ugly” which The Carolines have extended to include websites and cellphones, garnered much laughter and cheer.

The audience shared its own vocal talents with “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, and then the band broke our hearts with a beautiful rendition of“Tennessee Waltz,” and with the impressive whistling talent of Katie Perman. !

After singing together for a decade, Lesley Pelletier, Katie Perman and Chloe Albert are pure energy. When you meet them in person they are like you and I but, as soon as they come out on stage, they shine, they dazzle, they conquer.!

“In terms of a quality show, these gals are the total package …” wrote Peter Pirquet last year. Although it is a long-standing notion that one should not agree with one’s critics, in the case of The Carolines, an exception should be made. The critics are right: the group’s blend of humour, plus the variety and reach of their creative harmonies truly warmed our hearts. The crowd appreciated their stories, their anecdotes, their artistry and vocal talent and responded in kind, laughing and cheering throughout the performance.

Speaker’s Message Painfully Good At Partnership Breakfast Shannon O’Connor Reporter

Mary Lee Prior of the Town of Vermilion and Corinne McGirr of the County of Vermilion River were the emcees for the 10th Annual Partnership Breakfast that took place on Oct. 8 at the Vermilion Regional Centre. They welcomed local dignitaries, business representatives, organizations, and partners of the breakfast whose keynote speaker was Kristen Cumming.

Cumming’s presentation was called ‘Let it Suck,’ which emphasized the value of discomfort in management performance and the usefulness of pain.

She asked for some specific examples from attendees where management performance in the workplace would be required. Behaviours such as: employees pursuing their own interests during work, employees making personal cell phone calls on company time, and employees who are unable to meet deadlines despite their assurances that they would, were mentioned.

The meeting that is required to happen in these instances between the employee and management is the one no one wants to have, ie. it sucks. But, you have to ‘Let it Suck’ and have the conversation to increase the employees performance, as it is in everyone’s best interest that employees perform well.

“Discomfort is essential to learning,” added Cumming. “It’s about uplifting employees to help them realize their potential.

“It’s a real tough thing for supervisors and leaders to get their head around, because they want to avoid both the pain of their employee as well as their own discomfort,” said Cumming.

“You have to learn how to ‘Let it Suck’ in the performance management process.”

Cumming said there is a tendency to put too much emphasis on the meeting.

“The meeting is really only 20 per cent of the process. The other 40 per cent is preparation for the meeting, and then there is 40 per cent follow through,” she added.

“When gathering discipline data, it must be objective data. The use of subjective words reveals judgement. You don’t solve a problem with judgement,” added Cumming.

“Use facts not opinion.”

Cumming added that it may even be necessary for the manager to let an

employee underperform until the appropriate data is collected.

On the flip side, the manager also has to be open to the idea that there may be barriers in the business that are affecting an employee’s motivation and performance. While a manager cannot motivate an employee, he/she can create a space in the workplace for motivation.

“If you want to create commitment, you have to offer it,” said Cumming.

During Cumming’s slide show presentation, she included a quote from Robin S. Sharma, author of The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari: “Difficult times disrupt your conventional ways of thinking and push you to forge better habits of thought performance and being.”

To “Let it Suck” is to sit with the discomfort said Cumming.

“Discomfort is the pathway to remarkable.”

Alberta Culture Days A Great Success

Vermilion’s busy three days celebrating Alberta Culture Days 2015 wrapped up as a great event. Thank you to the federal government and Alberta Culture for giving us the support to do this.

Booming Tree Taiko, the Laurence Boys, Storyteller Pearl Ann Gooding, the Shoen Classical Duo, Showcase, the Hunter Band, and Dan the One Man Band all came together to present a great weekend. And of course there were all the venues where people tried new things and signed up for club activities. That is what it’s all about...having people learn what the various clubs have to offer and then get involved!

For example, Fearless Art with Joan Blamire engaged 22 artists who did 42 canvases! The Pottery Guild and Heart Works had 36 people come through their doors to see what was happening. As a result, some signed up for future hands on opportunities. Whether it was these venues already mentioned or FOCUS ar t, hand bells, amateur radio, carriage horses, museum activities, dance, archery, the artist at work in the library, the College CSI site, solar viewing with Rob Baron, Taekwondo,

Jiujitsu, or the CLASS events, people were busy making their way to the venues of their choice. A big thanks to Communities in Bloom for the Saturday morning pancake breakfast and to Habitat for Humanity for the Friday night BBQ and evening treats plus their presence at the fairgrounds for the carriage horses.

Good Life came alongside the Alberta Culture Days’ Committee, hosting Art in the Park and providing the treats baked in the community oven. These were a hit along with the InterPipeline sponsored lunch plate and the very worthwhile man-van that had prostate cancer prevention/detection as its focus.

Showcase was a great evening of top-notch talent and abilities. Thank you to every participant in Showcase, including the flash mob, and to Ryan Wilson from Dance Impressions for being Stage Manager. Liam Laurence was behind the scenes doing an excellent job of plying the sound and lights.

Many people commented on the amazing talent in our area. Hallway of the Arts was enjoyed, what with treats thanks to Shannon Leonard, and great art, quilt, photography, and dance displays Bye Bye Blues, the CBC film, presented the

Politics is about how people get along together in a society and libertarian politics is based on the principle of property rights. Property is your own body and your other possessions. Your right is to decide what to do with yourself and your possessions while being responsible and accountable for your choices. Inherent in this right is the right to defend yourself and your possessions. There is a restriction on this right in that everyone has the same right, so your choices cannot violate the property rights of others.

Property right is a natural right. It is not granted, nor can it be taken away.

It can be violated. Common ways to violate proper ty rights are enslavement, assault, vandalism, and stealing

in all their various forms.

Governments today are contradictory regarding property rights. Governments enact laws prohibiting private persons from violating property rights which is proper and right, while also passing legislation that allows the government to violate property rights. Many government regulations restrict a person’s choices that have nothing to do with harming others. Governments tax people which is a confiscation of their property.

Our current system of government and its supporters maintain that it is only fair that some services be provided by government. The argument is that we have to ignore property rights and the ends justify the means. Government services and regulatory agencies operate through bureaucracies. The people working in government bureaucracies have no ownership in public assets so there is a tendency for much waste since there is no personal loss. In the private sector, people do own assets and will minimize waste. Government bureaucracies have not profit motive, no markets

to determine costs, no competition to control costs, and so costs are unduly high. Private businesses must make profits with controlled costs and efficient operations in order to compete in markets and stay in business. Government bureaucracies are monopolies with no incentives for customer satisfaction or innovation. Private businesses must satisfy customers and keep their business up to date in order to keep and attract customers. Government tends towards narrow, one-size-fits-all solutions at high cost. Leaving resources in the private sector with businesses operating in free markets with all the right incentives is the most cost effective way to get a wide variety of solutions for the diverse needs and wants of millions of people.

It would take a libertarian government some time to move our tax and regulate economy to a free enterprise, free market economy. It would start with eliminating the waste of tax funds, ending government funding of special interest grou ps, en d ing c or p orate

welfare, and ending things like foreign aid which tends to go to dictators and not the people. These measures would allow taxes to be lowered resulting in more private sector investment and the associated employment opportunities.

As this develops, people working in the public sector could move to productive employment in the private sector.

Another initiative would be eliminating barriers to small business by repealing legislation which favours big business.

Factional banking would be moved to a 100 per cent reserve ratio over time and the practice of using the Bank of Canada to print money out of thin air to cover government debt would be stopped. This would be a good start to giving our economy a sound money that allows people to save and invest with the confidence that money will maintain its value and even increase in value. These changes would allow our economy to grow in a stable and measured fashion which is like a rising tide that lifts everyone so that everyone is better off.

So we have drawn the curtain on Alber ta Culture Days 2015, but our newly positioned Allied Arts Director of Festivals, Rebekah Hiebert, a lawyer with Vermilion River Law, has ABC Days 2016 in her sights. Mark the last weekend of September 2016 for another great celebration here in Vermilion.

Senior’s Curling League Welcomes Casual Curlers Of All Ages

This curling season the Senior’s League is expanding to include casual curlers of all ages, those who would like to curl, but cannot commit to a particular team or league on a regular basis.

Senior’s and casual curling is every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Those who show up each day will pick a card from a box to determine teammates, and the sheet of ice

on which to curl.

Teammates then decide who plays which position. Ever y day you curl with someone different. New curlers are welcome; you will meet a lot of new people.

Senior’s and casual curling operated on a “come when you can” basis. You may be able to play only on Tuesdays, or perhaps this week but not next. This format will suit you well. Although most participants are senior’s, we do welcome casual curl-

ers or all ages.

The fee for the season is $20 0.

Those who curl on a casual basis pay $10 per game. The annual fee includes fun spiels at Christmas and wind-up.

The Senior’s Curling Club’s mission is to provide a little exercise, a lot of fun, and great socializing.

McFadzean Talks Libertarian Politics At J.R. Robson

Lakeland Libertarian Candidate Robert McFadzean talked politics with J.R. Robson students as part of Social Studies class on Wednesday afternoon, October 7.

Students questioned McFadzean about intellectual rights and the right to patent your own work.

“If you have intellectual property rights, it constrains things,” said McFadzean.

Another student questioned the candidate on his foreign policy beliefs, “how could it not be right to help another country in need?!”

“The Libertarian philosophy is about respect and consideration for other people. When we take that to a country level, we would have a non-intervention foreign policy. We have a perfect right to defend ourselves as a country but we would not have a right to send troops into other countries,” responded McFadzean.

McFadzean explained his Libertarian views about why he believes the private sector is better than the public sector.

“The private sector works effectively to give people better service, whereas the

government has a more one size fits all with the public sector; the system does not help people.

“When I’m talking about government I’m talking about the system; the system constrains the people elected in government.

“A L i b e r t a r ian government would star t of f looking at areas i n t h e g ove r n ment system where there is a lot of waste.

Everybody would be better off with a private sector.

“A L i b e r t a r ian government wo u l d l o o k for what I would call a frivolous use of taxpayer funds.

We w o u l d u s e taxpayer’s funds for special interest groups, for corporate welfare

and for foreign aid going to the people that it needs to help. With lowers taxes you would get a lot more investment in the private sector and more employment opportunities would open up there.

“A lot of what the government puts

in place is in conjunction with big businesses, which creates barriers that don’t allow small businesses to get into that industry. If we were to elect a Libertarian government, we would be able to turn that around immediately.”

Loss In Westlock Ends Marauder Football Regular Season Kathy Wolters Submitted

Two touchdowns in the third quarter proved to be the difference in a 29-17 win for the home Westlock Thunderbirds over the Vermilion Marauders last Thursday.

Trailing by just five, 8-3, after a first half trench war, the Marauders were deflated by an early big play and then score by their opponents. The Thunderbirds first play af ter the kickof f was a 57-yard run that ended on the Marauder 28 after Tyson Pulshulka tracked down the T-bird rusher. Three p l ay s l a t e r We s t l o c k s c o r e d a n d converted the touchdown to lead by 12.

The Marauders had a big play on their next possession, a reverse that Donovan Yaceyko took to the Westlock 26. But their drive stalled as the T-Birds plugged the middle for a loss of four. A time count violation followed and Westlock took over on their own 35 but were quickly forced to punt.

The Marauders’ passing game only netted five yards on a reception by Tanner Throndson followed by t wo incompletions. Westlock took over on downs on their own 50. The T-Birds scored on the next play when Josh Boyd emerged from a rugby scrum and scored with 3:04 left in the quarter. The convert gave Westlock a 22-3 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Westlock ended up in the red zone. Yaceyko, who had difficulty fielding kickoffs all af ternoon, picked up the bouncing

ball and fumbled five yards later. The series also provided one of the more comic plays of the afternoon.

On third and nine, Westlock moved e a r l y, t h e M a r a u d e r s m o ve d a n d everyone stood still for a beat as flags flew and Westlock ran a less than successful play. After a conference, the officials called off setting penalties of offside on the Marauders and illegal procedure on Westlock. The play should have been whistled dead immediately. The Thunderbirds got another crack at a first down, but Riley Schmall provided the tackle that gave the Marauders back the ball on downs on their own 30.

Unlike either of their last o p po nents, Westlock managed to limit the Marauders’ ground game with backs B r ayd e n C h i l i b e c k a n d Pu l s h u l k a limited to less than 25 hard fought yards between them. The exception was when the Marauders went outside with Donovan Yaceyko who got great blocking for big yardage—18 and 36 yards--on two reverses and a 40 yard gallop for a touchdown on the last play of the third quarter.

To start that drive Brandon Maida connected with Yacek yo on a pass and run play from the Marauder 30 to the Westlock 40. Yaceyko scored a play later as the siren sounded to end the quarter. He kicked the convert and the Marauders were back in the game at 22-10.

The Marauders eventually did take over on downs with 1:36 on the clock, but they couldn’t move the ball. Neither did Westlock who were forced to punt with the Marauders finding themselves on their own 15 with 40.6 seconds left on the clock after an illegal block call.

On first down Maida was forced to scramble and when he was hit, the ball popped out of his hands in the air and was fallen on Tristan Gagne.

29 yards brought the Marauders to the Westlock 39. The Marauders had one play left with 2.1 seconds on the clock.

A long pass was a jump ball that was knocked down to end the game.

The Vermilion Tigers Jr B Hockey Club opened the 2015-2016 regular season on the road this past weekend.

The club came away with a win and a loss to sit in a 3 way tie for third place in the NEAJBHL standings.

Rookie rearguard Danton Brooks stopped 30 shots en route to a 2-1 victory against the Rangers on Friday. The Lloydminster product made two game saving stops in the 1st period to lead the team to the victory. Returning player Chase Fletcher netted his first of the season on a breakaway and rookie forward Conor Fogarty scored the game winning goal 5 minutes into the 3rd frame.

Saturday, October 3 wasn’t as kind to the Tigers as their first visit to Lloydminster resulted in a 7-2 drubbing at the hands of the Bandits. The Tigers spent a good portion of the game in the penalty box and the Bandits took full advantage potting 3 power play
