Baba Jenny’s Opening New Facility In Mannville

Despite the recent economic down- is expanding their operations with a turn, Baba Jenny’s Ukrainian Foods second production facility that will be opening in Mannville at the beginning of November.

“We don’t have a concrete date as of yet,” said the Director of Operations for Baba Jenny’s, Josh Gryschuk.

“We continue to grow. We continue to supply to more stores throughout Western Canada. Our success has come from making a good product and building good relationships with our distributors. We make a good food product that hasn’t deterred people from spending their money on a comfort food,” said Gryschuk.

Opening the second location will not negatively af fect the Vermilion location added Gryschuk.

“If anything it will allow some of our Director of Operations, Josh Gryschuk and some of the production staff at the Vermilion employees a shorter drive to work and operation of Baba Jenny’s on Oct. 2. Photo Shannon O’Connor it will open up space, whether it be production space or storage space for us here (in Vermilion).”

Unlike the Vermilion location, the 1-800-269-8580 www.stewartrealty.net facility in Mannville will focus solely on production. “ The one thing we won’t have in Mannville is retail, so we won’t have a front like we do here in Vermilion where we’re selling products. Customers won’t be able to come in and buy products from that facility.”

The plan is to eventually have every product made in Mannville.

Gryschuk said the expansion will be positive for customers as the second location will ensure that they can make more products and make them faster.

“We anticipate hiring more staff,” said Gryschuk who added that there will be no product pricing increases associated with the opening of the facility in Mannville.

“We’ve been doing this breakfast now for the past 20 years,” said Deputy Chief Brad Laurenceson. We do a lot of medical calls as well as fire calls. We had a medical call this morning during the pancake breakfast that we had 5 people at, the rest stayed here and kept cooking,” said Laurenceson.

The fire department are on call 24/7.

The Mannville Fire Department currently has 19 firefighters.

“Some of the guys here are closing in on 30 years here. We train on the first and third Wednesday of the month. We always do a breakfast for Fire Prevention Week.

“We had 90/100 of the Mid-West pipe crew show up for breakfast this morning.

They support the community very well.

“We do a lot of medical calls here in Mannville. We do at least 60 medical calls a year and at least 60/70 fire calls per year. We also do a cadet program and last year we had five high school kids that were cadets.

“We don’t do a lot of house fires which is good. This time of year it’s usually combines and baler fires. The winter is the major one for car accident call outs for us.

Stubbs Tells Students To Support Canada’s Fight Against ISIS

Shannon Stubbs is gaining momentum in the Lakeland Riding race. Last week the 33 year old urged the students of J.R. Robson School to be more politically aware and addressed Canada’s role in the Syrian crisis and the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“Politics and government impacts every single aspect of your life. It impacts every single aspect of your future. It impacts every single part of your family’s lives and your community and it affects everything that you can and can’t do every day to what you can or can’t say, from how much things cost to educational opportunities and in fact whether there are jobs at all,” Stubbs told students.

“We believe in a strong military to ensure our safety and security. Canada has joined in the fight against ISIS. I believe that Canada has a moral obligation to stand for democracy, for human rights and for peace and security around the world.”

Students questioned Stubbs on whether it was better that Canada stay neutral and not get involved in Syria.

“The other two parties say that if they

become the government they will with draw Canada from the military mission along with our allies against ISIS. “If the other parties say that they believe in women’s rights and human dignity then why would they abandon this fight against ISIS?!

“ISIS has threatened to attack Canada and Canadians in our own homes, and if the other parties are not prepared to stop this they do not stand for those values,” said Stubbs.

Do you often wonder where the best places in your house are to install your fire detectors?

This week is Fire Safety/Prevention week and the theme of this year’s special week is “Hear the beep where you sleep: Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.”

I have always been a nervous wreck when it comes to fire. I can honestly say besides drowning, fire is on the top of the list when it comes to fears.

Many people I have known in my life have thought that I am neurotic about fire, but not everyone knows the story of one of my very dear friends from Newfound-

land, who along with her two brothers lost their lives in a house fire back in my teenage years. Her brother had come home after drinking at a party and put on the deep fryer to prepare food. While he was waiting he fell asleep on the sofa while smoking, and the house caught fire. My friend Bernadine and her little brother were upstairs sleeping and lost their lives along with her older brother downstairs. So, yes, fire has always been deep within my thoughts and one of my biggest fears.

If you were to walk through my house there are fire alarms everywhere. The hallways, the stairways, the bedrooms and the kitchens all have fire alarms.

I admit, lots of times I take the battery out of the kitchen alarm while I am cooking because I constantly set it off during

cooking.

According to Fire Prevention Canada, on average, fire kills eight people each week in Canada with residential fires accounting for 73 per cent of those deaths.

It’s common knowledge that smoke kills. Hundreds of people die in residential fires in Canada each year. People have been found deceased from smoke inhalation without having suffered any burns from the fire. If fire alarms had been installed, lives may have been saved. They are not that expensive so why not use them and try to make our families safer?

While fire alarms are an essential part of your fire escape plan it is not a substitute for your fire prevention plans. Always discuss fire prevention strategies with all

members of your family.

Fire Prevention Week is not only a week about prevention and fire safety, it is also an excellent time to take the oppor tunit y to show how much we appreciate our firefighter members in our town and surrounding areas for helping keep us safe in one of the most devasting times in our lives. They put their lives on the line for us each and every time they are called to attend a fire.

Duane Zaraska Says Don’t Blame The NDP’s For Alberta’s Oil Situation

Zaraska believes that we should support the refugees in the Syrian crisis.

“We’ve always been humanitarians. We want to help as much as we can but more in a humanitarian role and an aid role.

“People should vote for me because I think I have the experience, I have a lot of people experience, I’m vice-president of the Métis nation, so I’ve negotiation skills. I am compassionate to the people’s needs in Lakeland and they want change, there is no doubt about it, and change is what they are going to get with the NPD,” said Zaraska.

Election Day is fast approaching on October 19. The Lakeland NDP candidate Duane Zaraska said last week he believes he’s got a good chance.

“The campaign has been going very well so far,” said Zaraska.

When confronted about whether or not the NDP party has brought positive change to the Alberta oil sands Zaraska responded; “The NPD’s inherited a mess.

People who blame the NDP party don’t understand the oil situation. I realize that we are in oil country out here and people are taking the negative approach about that. It’s a world crisis. Saudi Arabia has set the price of oil not Alberta.

“With the gutting of the environmental policies and what not, it’s going to take a while to move forward in that respect.

First and foremost we are not against the oil field, we need oil and gas production.

“We should be using the profits from the oil industry to diversify our economy.

If we had been, then we wouldn’t be in this situation,” said Zaraska.

“That’s why people are angry, so it’s not a provincial issue it’s a global issue Lakeland NDP candidate Duane Zaraska. and when that industry does come back Photo submitted and it will, we will support it!”

Warm rays of sunlight broke thru the green and gold tree tops, the long hidden little meadow in front of me looked so peaceful, all the shadows looked so dark at the far end.

I turned slowly for two seconds, as a noise distracted me…just a morning song bird, I turned back to watch my meadow grow bright in the morning sunrise.

Which looked exactly the same except one of the shadows now radiated huge plumes of steam, glowing very noticeably with the sunrise; I held my breath trying to make out the ghostly shape of the shadows.

As if on cue the elk stepped out into the full sunshine, my heart raced it was a bull elk, this was a scenio last week as I was on a bowhunting adventure early one morning.

I sat high in the tree tops, my tree stand hid in a blend of spectacular fall colours, overlooking the narrow meadow surrounded by a prairie forest, one main game trail came down the middle of the

The Annual St. Jerome’s Fall Supper was another great success thanks to the support of the community of Vermilion and our many volunteers who made the event possible.

The three people who took most of the work on their shoulders were Rolanda Beaudette, Paulette Moir and Charlene Young. We would also like to thank the overwhelming parent support for taking time out of their busy schedules to help out during the day on Wednesday, Thursday and Thursday evening.

Thank you to our wonderful parents for all the donations of buns, veggies, and desserts. We would not be as successful without these dedicated parents. We also had a lot of help from our great students and staff, as well as retired staf f, Annet te Austin and Marlene Lawrence this year. The high school students helped to peel vegetables, set up the hall, serve coffee and juice, wash dishes and take down tables and chairs.

Tuesday, September 29th was a beautiful morning for students and staff to walk to Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church to celebrate the first mass of the school year. meadow and forked off to either side of my tree stand.

A perfect setup to harvest my tablefare for the winter, months of preparation and anticipation all lead to this moment, what at that moment followed I wasn’t prepared for.

The bull elk now clearly visible and heading my way as planned was certainly strange, a younger bull elk with his right antler two to three feet high forked at the end.

The antler on other side, only just past his ear looked like it was lazy and stunted, as silly as that looked it was his antics that made me as much as I tried to hold back…laugh out loud.

He skipped down the trail like a school girl on her way to grandma’s house for cookies, the occasional buck or kick just added to the weirdness, he was certainly enjoying himself on this warm sunrise.

Bowhunting has been steadily slow with increasing south and east winds bringing rain and heat, now this elk skipped down the trail and stood in the exact spot near my stand, a scenario that I played over and over in my mind for a perfect elk harvest.

Although a younger elk, he was a full

size body weight and would fill the deepfreeze with tender vittles, however, with a smile I couldn’t erase from my face, combined with the break out of my chuckles, I couldn’t shoot my bow right?

I nicknamed him on the spot and called him “The Jester” I said to him in silent thought, “Skip away Jester and enjoy your day, perhaps we will meet another day!

And again as if on cue he did exactly that, he skipped off out of my vision and faded into the dense autumn trees, once again the wilderness fell silent and still.

That was the only action I was going to see that morning, even distant elk bugles we heard only days before were silent, walking back to camp now warmed by a gorgeous morning I felt great.

On a trail thru another patch of woods, I found myself looking around as if to see someone watching me and asking myself, ”did I just do a little skip there?

My wife Roxanne and I drove two vehicles well into the dark searching for her. I was overwhelmed with grief as there were combines in every field around our home.

Miss Pickles only has two jobs - herding farm kitties and keeping the foxes and coyotes away from the home area.

My fear was that she was lead off and attacked by coyotes.

Or worse…due to the combines and her dislike for them…sliced Pickles in some dark field. Near midnight, thanks to a neighbour’s friend, she was spotted over 5 KMs away near the busy HWY 14.

She received serious consequences and repercussions and was in big trouble!!!

When The Smoke Clears Isn’t it funny, serious consequences, repercussions and big trouble when it comes to missing children and pets involves a lot of harsh hugging and face kisses?

The Miss Pickles Chronicles A little scare last week the night before the bowhunting above, Miss Pickles went missing, I arrived home early that afternoon and there was no big slobber greeting that is the norm.

Red, black and white was seen everywhere and on everyone on Wednesday, September 30 as we celebrated St. Jerome’s Day. We all gathered in the gym in the afternoon for the “Welcoming”. After the Sr. High Student Council was introduced and we prayed the “Prayer of St. Francis”, Mike Menzies and Cain Collins introduced the Grade 4 students to their houses, Cartier, Fraser or Mackenzie. Each Grade 4 student participated in a relay race that involved a sack race, carrying an egg on a spoon and launching a rubber chicken through a hoola-hoop. Next the new Grade 5-8 students competed in the environmental friendly “Banana Dunk” in which they had to be the fastest to eat a banana and get the peel in the compost pail. New Grade 9-12 students competed to find the most beanbags wearing disorientating goggles, and having string foam sprayed at them. Last, but not least, our new staff had to play “Follow the Leader” with Cain Collins ending with them each getting a whipped cream pie in the face.

Thank you to the Student Council for organizing this time honoured tradition of St. Jerome’s. Well done!

We had another very busy volleyball weekend on September 25 and 26. The St. Jerome’s Sr. Girls Volleyball Team has an excellent start to the year. They competed in the Cold Lake tournament this last weekend where the Spartan’s won gold. The girls beat St. Joe’s from Whitecourt in quarter-finals to continue on. In the semis the Spartans went 3 sets with a very tough Assumption team from Cold Lake advancing them to the finals. The Spartan’s played a competitive game against Bonnyville taking the win and Gold in 3 sets. The Sr. Boys to Athabasca and had a very

successful weekend. They went undefeated through the round robin facing Lac La Biche in the semi-finals. After winning the semis they faced the strong hometown, Athabasca, which they were unable to defeat bringing home the silver medal for the weekend. The JV Girls finished in 5th place in Andrew.

The Grade 9 girls earned bronze in St. Paul. The Grade 9 boys and grade 6/7 boys played in the St. Paul tournament losing out in the playoffs. The Grade 8 Girls won Silver at their home tournament and the Grade 7 girls had an awesome weekend winning Gold in St. Paul and Bronze at their home tournament.

To d a y I h a d t h e chance to go on a drive with my friend Eric, who drives around the country to take pictures of old abandoned farmsteads.

Seeing these old buildings really tugged the gate of memories open and yes, the memories of the lonely men who established these very places!!

It’s hard to imagine in this time of smart planes, all weather, snow plowed, hard surface or gravel roads and nice warm vehicles and of course satellite T.V’s, computers and such as radio and all the ways of canning music, the real loneliness those isolated men faced!!

In your mind’s eye, let’s go back and try to visualize the isolation even ten miles of cold snow covered country could be to everyone. The combination of going without, say, any mail, coffee, tobacco, basic necessities even, would finally motivate you to hook up a team or saddle your horse and head out!!

During Culture Days this year, VES was fortunate to have The Booming Tree Taiko Japanese drumming band as well as storyteller Pearl Ann Gooding at our school. Greg and Twyla did a lot of drumming using many different drums and even lighted sticks for one performance, instructed 21 volunteer drummers, taught the kids about the pulse of a song, and told a lot about the Japanese culture, touching on the flag, the Japanese “kilt ”, and the traditional shoes and bibs. VES took part in the Terry Fox Run on Sept. 30 by running for a family m em ber, a fr ien d or for Terr y Fox himself. After watching an inspiring video, students and staff lapped the school for half an hour. Twoonies were collected from students and staff. As Terr y Fox would say, “ Dreams are made possible if you tr y.” His goal was to raise hope in the future generation and he is doing just that.

This October, VES plans to scare hunger away from our c ommunit y.

On Being Lonely

try store where it was first situated back before 1900. Dad would keep a stall in the barn open in case some such traveler would show up, and folks in the know would put their horse or team in the barn and come in to get warm. It’s hard to explain how someone who hadn’t been in anyone’s company for weeks was suddenly confronted with warmth and hospitality that included someone to talk to and to visit!!

If the traveler stayed the night, as they often did, the talk would go on till early morning some nights. Surely beat watching T.V. to sit and listen, as I remember.

As lonely as it surely was for single men it probably was even worse for moms left home to tend the homes fires and look after the chores and kids until dad came home.

I can’t think of a scarier time if a wind storm arose, or something went wrong.

Help in some cases was hard to get, because you wouldn’t have the place to go for help!! On many occasions the man of the house would get work in a tie cutting camp or lumber camp and leave mom at home while he was out trying to make money to keep the farm going.

One family’s story was the mom kept the family eating with a handful of.22 shells and knowledge of trapping. Yes, they were a hardy breed!! The gals must have longed for the chance to do up their hair and dress up to go visiting, but I can assure you those occasions were few and far between for a whole lot of them. No wonder it was hard to get on the party line – if you had a phone.

Most of the phones disappeared come the 1929 depression. Many people developed some degree of eccentric behavior because of the long periods of loneliness it was taken as a badge of the territory.

Isolation and loneliness were so much of the way of life in early times, and neighbours cherished the idea of being able to bring cheer and keep that loneliness at bay. You sure didn’t need an appointment to visit someone, they were only too glad to have your company.

As I remember, we always had folks dropping in, and we had company, regularly it seemed even for these times, however as a teenager there were spells we never got farther than to school, or the little country store.

Getting to a show or any outing like

that was a rarity. Family groups were like an island in a sea of loneliness and they had the means within their house to fend off the lonely times and even entertain the lonely men who happened by to visit, share the gossip and I think to enjoy moms cooking.

People used their pets for companions and taught them wonderful tricks to amuse themselves. They just had the time to do the job.

Some lonesome men talked to their horses like they would a person, and seemed to make them understand. Well, though as lonely as the isolation made some of our early pioneers, I think the loneliness I feel when I’m in the city, with everyone rushing around, and no one speaking or having any interaction because they’re afraid of being mugged or whatever, I think I’d rather be in the old time country, where everyone would extend a helping hand, no questions asked. Like, “Put your team in the barn, and come in and sit a spell, the coffee pot is hot and the donuts are fresh.” “Yeah, like drop in anytime it’ll be good to have a visit with you!!”

Partnering with Webb’s Ford of Vermilion, we will be participating in the We Scare Hunger food drive campaign. Let’s see how many Ford trucks we can fill for our local food bank. From October 7-30, you can drop off or send non-perishable food items to school with your child, or sto p in at We b b’s For d to dro p off donations and help fill the truck there. As we collect the food items, our students will be learning about what hunger is and why it mat ters in our community. At the end of our campaign, we (and the Ford dealership) will deliver all the donations to our local food bank.

Between Banality And Vision

S a m u e l Ta y l o r Coleridge laid out for students of literature what he referred to as his rather “ homely ” definitions of (1) Prose: words in their best order and (2) Poetry: the best words in their best order.

Precision of language seems key to effecting the highest level of accuracy in communication. It is perhaps the quest for such precision that has for centuries drawn writers great and small toward attempting, through the utilization of the best arrangement of language to construct their works, and to strive toward ever narrowing the possibility of being misinterpreted by those either incapable of grasping the essence of the work or who seek to discredit it for the sake of discrediting something not aligned with their own opinion on a particular subject.

Language is power. It wields a mighty sword. It may be used to inspire, conspire, inform, and confuse. Combine the power of language with carefully rehearsed inflection and language has the power to incite great evil or great good. We have borne witness to both throughout history.

How does the power of language affect our political landscape? Well, it varies. Some of the great orators of the 20th Century have been recorded for generations far into the distant future to hear. Winston Churchill. JFK. Martin Luther King Jr. Tommy Douglas. Even those of us not yet born when these leaders stood before populations hanging on every word feel the power of their convictions. We feel something within us stir.

Nineteen days before what might be one of the most electrifying federal elections Canadians have experienced, how do the current leaders compare to the great inspirational speakers of days past? Who knows? Some may claim not

heart? Who has trained us to become so suspicious of anyone who breaks rank and speaks with passion, who questions, who offers an opinion that collides midsentence with that put forward by a selfrighteous status quo?

The goal of a political party is what?

To rule over the populace, I suppose. To establish and maintain a society wherein each citizen is equal in the expectation of the ruling entity to protect the integrity of his or her rights of citizenship, without prejudice.

The message delivered to us by each of those political leaders striving to gain our confidence and support ought be authentic and inspiring. It ought to stir something deep within us, to challenge us to greater things. Banal repetition of empty phrases and smart cracks attacking the opposition may fill the headlines but it leaves the expectant, hungry public shifting from one foot to the other, still waiting for the fire.

The “leaders debates” are not exactly readily available to the general Canadian Electorate. That is another subject altogether.

We h ear, it se e m s, a l ot of key phrases repeated ad infinitum. Are they supposed to substitute for that which holds actual meaning for the average voter? How do you, for example, define “family values”? Are you part of the “middle class”, just outside of it or knocking to gain admittance? And what do you believe when one of our leaders begins (ad nauseum) a phrase with the words “let me be clear”, especially when most of the content that follows appears to be anything but?

What do you think of a political landscape wherein it is considered a “weakness”, something to be ridiculed, when a politician dares speak of things of the

The junior boys’ volleyball team is off to a good start this year: on September 19, 2015, they attended a tournament in Lloydminster. “They worked well as a team,” says Coach Campbell as they won their pool, won their first playoff match and then won the bronze medal against Holy Rosary. The junior boys’ “B” team was in St. Paul on September 25, 2015, and, in a late night match, also won Bronze despite playing triple ball for their first time. Junior girls will host their annual volleyball tournament, Spooktacular, on Halloween weekend The «A» team duplicated the defeat the next day, also in St. Paul. The junior varsity girls were in Redwater while the Varsity team was in Whitecourt last weekend.

J. R. will participate in the national Student Vote Day on Friday, October 16, 2015. Students will have an opportunity to participate in an event that mimics real voting stations and ballot entries. Polls will open at J. R. from 9 am to noon, and, like the voting population in our democratic country, all students are invited and encouraged to vote. Kids are also asked to bring an item of food to donate to the food back when they cast their vote.

Thanksgiving 2015 is just around the corner. As I write this we are still waiting for crops to be ready to combine, after having an unusually dry year. As Thanksgiving approaches, it gives each of us the opportunity to reflect on how truly blessed we are. When we are thankful, we become happy. “A happy heart does good like a medicine”, is ancient wisdom that teaches us that we all can choose to access our own best medicine from within. I am wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving.

If you are debating this thanksgiving as to whether to cook your turkey with the breast up or down, it is my experience that the meat is more tender and juicy, when it is roasted with the breast down. I

Kindergarten is a hub of activity!!

Our 26 new smiling faces are settling into the kindergarten routines and are busy getting to know each other and the school. They had a great week exploring sunflowers scientifically using their senses, tweezers and magnifying glasses. They identified how there are many different types of sunflowers, how they grow, and where their seeds are found. Thank you to Mrs. Alice McLaughlin and Mrs. Megan Newton for supplying our kindergarten class with dozens of flowers to dissect!

Thanksgiving

am happy to share with you, some of my very favourite thanksgiving recipes.

Turkey Stuffing: Cut up one loaf of bread, (whole grain or white) into cubes, add 2 medium chopped onions, toss with 1/3 cup light olive oil, 1/2 cup melted butter, 1/3 cup water, I 1/2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon pepper and 2 - 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning to taste. It is a good idea to taste it to get it right, before you pop the stuffing into the oven. Cook in 2 loaf pans, covered loosely with tin foil in the oven during the last 30-40 minutes of roasting the turkey. It is currently recommended to not cook the stuffing in the turkey. Roasting the turkey without the stuffing inside is considered a safer cooking method to help ensure the optimal internal cooking temperature of the turkey. If you use dry bread crumbs you should add additional water and butter.

Homemade Cranberry Sauce:

In a saucepan combine 2 1/2 cups frozen or fresh cranberries, 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup maple syrup. Cook on medium-low heat, occasionally stirring, breaking up some of the berries when cooked with the back of the spoon.

Remove from heat when thickened and slightly reduced. Serve warm or cold. This can also be used as a jam on toast. It’s very healthy and tasty.

Pumpkin Pie Plain Pastry Crust for double crust 1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup lard (non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening) 1/2 teaspoon salt 3-4 tablespoons iced water Put the lard and the flour into a bowl, cut or flake the lard using a knife, or a fork, or your fingers or a pastry blender to work the lard and the flour together.

Add 3 tablespoons of the iced water into the flour mixture and gently mix until

Mrs. Wagner and some lucky students were invited to attend the HASS (Healthy Active School Symposium. The group will be spending the day attending sessions and group discussions to learn about different ways we can encourage Mannville School and its students to

Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes then at 350 degrees for 30 – 40 minutes. The pie is done when a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean. Cool and serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

The junior girls’ volleyball team will be hosting a game night on October 7.

Dewberry, Innisfree, St. Jerome’s, and Marwayne are coming to participate.

The game night will consist of every team playing each other once for a half hour game. This game night will give the teams lots of practice and be fun for all.

Vermilion Folk Club Welcomes Father/Son Duo Kevin and Dustin Welch

The amazing father/son musical duo, Kevin and Dustin Welch, will be the next act to appear during this season’s Vermilion Folk Festival’s line-up.

According to Laing Entertainment, Kevin Welch is known as a “songwriter’s songwriter” and has had his songs recorded by artists such as Waylon Jennings, The Highwaymen, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Linda Ronstadt, and Reba McIntyre to name just a few.

Rolling Stone magazine has referred to him as “One of the best songwriters in America.”

In his “Life in a Nutshell” section on his website it states he moved to Nashville in 1978 and started writing for Tree International. For the next 10 years, he started earning a living and had three kids with then wife, Jennifer Patten. He scored his first record deal in 1990 and released his latest album in 2010.

Although Kevin Welch lived in Nashville for a great number of years and has written songs for some of the biggest Country artists, he does not describe his own style as Country and has referred to it as much broader with “hints of bluegrass, dark rock, and blues,” among other styles.

songwriter in his own right, is teaming up with his father for the upcoming performance in Vermilion.

Although Dustin Welch told examiner. com in an interview that he hated the question, “Who are your songwriting influences?” he did cite his father as his most important musical influence.

Growing up in Nashville as the son of a well-renowned singer/songwriter, Dustin Welch was exposed to some of the finest musicians and songwriters around, from a very early age, and said he was basically raised in studios and clubs.

He released his first album in 2009, Whiskey Priest, which was named after a character in Graham Greene’s novel, The Power and the Glory. Dustin also cites many great authors as having influenced his writing style. Among them are: John

Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Isaac Asimov and Gore Vidal.

Dan Kimpel wrote in Music Connection, “In the hands of Dustin Welch a banjo possesses the fierce power to confront abrasive electric guitars and hard-hitting staccato snares.”

The father/son duo bring a wealth of history, experience, originality and talent to the stage in Vermilion.

“Kevin is a favourite with the Folk Club and we are excited to host his son as well,” said President of the Vermilion Folk Club, Rita Barr. The Vermilion Folk Club has advertised this performance as a guaranteed “sell-out.”

Tickets are $20 ($10 for students) and are available at Vermilion Credit Union. The concert starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October, 17 at the Vermilion Legion.

A Day In The Life Of Peter Walsh

Peter Walsh is well known around the Town of Vermilion, as a lecturer at Lakeland College for the past 30 years teaching agriculture and crop technology, and for his involvement in the Lakeland Rowing Club.

Peter came to Lakeland College first as a student from Ontario in the early 1980s to take the hands-on Green certificate training after finishing his Agriculture Degree and an agricultural exchange in New Zealand.

He joined the Lakeland faculty in 1984 and to say Peter is very involved with campus life is an understatement. Walsh was part of the founding members of the Lakeland Rowing Club in 1996, and he is known for his dedicated, ‘take no prisoners’ coaching style, taking the club a long way to where it is today with the new recently finished boathouse in the Vermilion Provincial Park equipped with boats.

Rowing has become a common sight during the summer evenings and mornings on the Vermilion River.

When he’s not rowing at the Vermilion Provincial Park or at the rowing machine, he is an active community volunteer, music lover and can even be seen wearing the Kilt occasionally as a symbol of his strong pride in his Scottish heritage.

Do you enjoy being a lecturer?

It’s the best job in the world if you like working with young people you can’t get a better job in life. Some of my courses this year have 50-60 kids in it.

You just have to teach them how to sift through the stuff to get to the good stuff.

(Through the years Walsh has been the program head and the department chair in his department at Lakeland College.)

What is an average day of Peter Walsh like?

I get up at 5:10 a.m. and I’m on the water at 6 a.m. rowing. I don’t take any prisoners, if they are not pulling their weight, if they are not getting the job done, then they are going to hear about it now because it’s autumn and we don’t have enough time with these kids, we have to turn them into rowers. Right now we have 33 kids on the water, but not all at one time.

We have to whip their butts into shape

before the western Canadian rowing championship in Burnaby B.C. After rowing then it’s straight to the College where I have labs and lectures.

When classes are done at the end of the day I’m back on the water again. Later I review footage from on the water and upload to social media so that students can see where they can improve. As a semester is 14 weeks long, rowing is only 8 weeks long and we have to be ready.

As a lecturer you have to keep updated on theory and read.

There are a lot of logistics to be organized. There is a lot of extra work in rowing, like booking field trips and loading and unloading trailers. Friday night I try to check out…. a movie…glass of wine. I’m Chair of the First United Church Board and the weekend can still be full of rowing.

So…yeah, it’s busy!

Would you ever consider running for Mayor?

I have thought about it, but not right now I have too many other priorities. But yes, I would be interested in municipal politics. I already sit on the recreation board for the Town. I am very proud of Vermilion and I came here from the city. It’s homey and it’s cozy. It’s a great place to raise your kids.

What do you miss about Ontario?

I miss the autumn in Ontario. We don’t

get autumn here in Vermilion… we get fall.

We’ve all heard the phrase “Location, location, location” but did you know that location matters when it comes to your smoke alarm? That’s the message behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep”. In a fire, seconds count. Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out. Here are some important safety tips:

Many fatal home fires occur when people are sleeping and it’s crucial that working smoke alarms are in place to wake residents and give them time to escape. Smoke alarms need to be tested every month and their batteries replaced twice a year. It’s always a good idea to keep extra batteries close at hand. These simple steps can make the difference between life and death when it comes to home fires.

1) Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home.

2) Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do.

3) Test alarms monthly by pushing the test button.

4) Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly.

5) Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.

6) If the smoke alarms sounds, get outside and stay outside. Go to your outside meeting place.

7) Call the fire department (911) from outside the home.

I am happy to report that 2015 has been a successful year for fire protection within The County of Minburn. Despite the extremely dry spring, the number of fire calls we have responded to in 2015 has remained low. On behalf of the County Council and County Manager, I would like to thank the volunteer fire fighters of the Vegreville Fire Department, Innisfree Fire Department and Mannville Fire Department for their commitment to the community to keep us all safe.

Wayne Chaulk on bass or guitar, Ray Johnson on the accordion or fiddle, and Kevin Blackmore on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and any number of improvised percussion instruments including Tupperware lids and garbage bags.

All three members sing and write s o n g s ; h o w e v e r, J o h n s o n o f t e n arranges traditional accordion numbers for the band to perform.

Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers were formed in Newfoundland, in 1983.

Two of the three group members (Johnson and Chaulk) were school teachers prior to forming their group.

The band’s first album, “Makin’ For the Harbour” was released in 1986. The album relied heavily on Newfoundland standards and Blackmore’s comedy numbers; Chaulk made one significant contribution with “Yesterday’s Fishermen”. “Gotta Get Me Moose B’y” would become their early career signature tune, and remains one of their more popular songs today.

Next on the roster was “Nods’N’Winks”,

a decidedly non-descript album mostly notable for Blackmore’s “My Old Wooden Shack ”, which features Johnson on accordion and vocals. It is, however, at this point in the group’s history that their popularity began to rise.

All three musicians are Newfoundlanders, and the musical style strongly reflects this fact. The group specializes in Newfoundland and folk music, as well as performing comedic skits and standup routines. Some of their most popular recordings range from reflections on Newfoundland culture, such as “Sarah” and “Saltwater Joys”, to light-hearted tales that can border on the ridiculous, such as “Is You ‘Appy?” and “Chainsaw Earle”.

Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers have been a well known group for over 30 years, producing a total of 19 albums, while still maintaining an active touring schedule throughout Canada.

Action Jackson Rides Again Cycling Canada selected Alison Jackson to be one of only six cyclists to compete for Canada. She recently completed a six day stage race in France at the L’Ardeche International in which she won the Red jersey for overall sprint points leader. On July 20th an attempted break-in from a local business left the front door damaged.

On August 18th a resident returned to his home to find that his front door had been kicked in and his television was missing.

On August 29th a resident returned home to find someone had damaged a

window and his door and taken some medication from his home.

On September 9th thieves attempted to gain entry to another local business.

On September 16th a witness interrupted a thief trying to break into a C-can.

The thief sped off in a white 4 door pickup truck with no tailgate.

On September 20th the fence surrounding a business was cut and numerous hand

and power tools were taken.

More crimes may have been interrupted, gone unnoticed, or may not have been reported to police. Be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

There have been extensive renovations to the 2300 square foot space in Lakeland Mall that is now home to an innovative business called SHAPE Art and Wellness Studio that is set to open its doors on Monday, Oct. 5.

“We got it done in two months,” said owner Leigha Wald. “It’s been a real learning process. We had the support of the community.”

“I want to say thank you to fellow businesses in the Mall,” added owner Robin Nordling. Especially for all the coffee.”

With the renovations nearly complete, apart from a touch up here and there, Wald said they are excited to finally be doing what they love.

Wald is a qualified dance instructor who has a diploma from Edmonton and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University, and will be teaching dance at the studio. Despite having danced professionally for a number of years, Wald said she has always felt a pull toward teaching.

Nordling is a Raynor Massage Therapist, which is named after its founder, Brandon Raynor. This type of massage focuses getting to the root of an issue, physically and emotionally and removing

their lives from their homelands.

The Liberals and NDP say they will withdraw Canada from the international fight against ISIS, suggesting Canada should only supply humanitarian assistance, but the Prime Minister said what advocates have told him clearly: “without military support, all you’re doing is dropping aid on dead people.”

On top of our military and substantial humanitarian assistance, Canada is also playing a key role in supporting refugees.

To date, Canada has promised to accept thousands of refugees fleeing persecution from the evils of ISIS. We must ensure Canadians’ safety and security, while we are helping the most vulnerable people with care and due diligence.

By sticking to our values, Canada is now more respected than ever around the world. In fact, a recent sur vey released this past summer ranked Canada as the “most admired” country with the “best reputation” on the international stage.

This view of Canada did not happen by accident.

Nordling said all aspects of the studio work in unison.

“Art brings about wellness; it’s about not holding things in. The goal is to get to the underlying layers of tension,” said Nordling.

“We want to be an umbrella for art and wellness,” added Wald.

This includes fitness classes with Sheila Cadman (Threshold Fitness and Nutrition), Fine Art classes with Monica To, Art Workshops with Joan Blamire (Fearless Acrylic), and Vocal Lessons with Dana Peregrym-Morgan.

Spartans Win Gold The St. Jerome’s Sr. Girls Volleyball Team has an excellent start to the year. They competed in the Cold Lake tournament this last weekend where the Spartan’s won gold. The girls beat St. Joe’s from Whitecourt in quarter-finals to continue on. In the semis the Spartans went 3 sets with a very tough Assumption team from Cold Lake advancing them to the finals. Interior Design Technology Students Win Two More Design Competitions

Lakeland College’s interior design technology program’s winning streak in student design competitions is still alive.

Current students and instructors Fiona McLeod, Greg Plant, and Rochelle Horne watched a webinar on Friday that revealed the winners of the 2014-15 National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) student kitchen design and charette competitions. There was plenty of cheering in the classroom as three membersof the Class of 2015 were recognized.

Laura Cobb placed first in the NKBA/ General Electric Charette Competition and won a $5,000 scholarship while Bree-Anne Hubick finished third and received a $3,000 scholarship. During the charette competition, students were presented with a design challenge and had three hours to plan a safe, functional kitchen that meets the needs of the client.

by Waypoint Living Spaces, the student design competition received hundreds of entries from NKBA student members at colleges and universities across North America. “ We’re ex tremely exc ited,” says McLeod. “I’m very proud of the students and the fabulous work they did.” This is the 12 th year in a row that at least one Lakeland student has placed in a design competition. McLeod admits the ongoing success definitely requires some luck, but it’s also a reflection of the quality of students in the program at the Vermilion campus.

“Our students work hard and we try to have this program replicate a professional design firm. They are expected to meet deadlines and create quality work,” says

McLeod.

In fact the work that Soto created for the competition was of such high standard that real-life clients Dean and Barbara actually incorporated her kitchen design into their East Tennessee home. “The design is incredible. Literally, the designer thought of everything. I hope we captured what she had imagined in the drawings,” said Dean during the webinar, adding that they loved the “rugged elegance” of Soto’s kitchen design.

Current second-year interior design students (who are now working on their NKBA Bath Design Competition entries) were ecstatic that their former classmates

excelled in last year’s competitions.

“I’m really excited that so many of them placed. For me it shows that you need to do what you love and put your own personal touch on all of your (work). Yes, incorporate what the client is looking for, but don’t be afraid to put your own spin on it and make it unique in your own way,” says Payton Ramstead.

Accredited by the NKBA, Lakeland’s interior design technology program is a two-year diploma program based at the Vermilion campus. Students learn in a studio setting where they master design fundamentals, drafting, space planning and more.

Since my move into the “farming” community in 2010 I have been taken aback by the amazing contributions of Farmwives, not only in their homes and in their families; but also in their communities. These women have been pillars in their communities for a very long time, and they continue to be today.

I have been so moved by this tireless devotion, in fact, that I’ve just completed writing a book, which profiles and celebrates them. My aim is to give them the recognition they deserve, and to honor their legacies to the larger patchwork of Canada’s Heritage.

Prior to the release of the full book - I am releasing brief excerpts from each interview. The full book contains 17 in-depth questions and answers about their life, photos, as well as, a recipe from each of the women. “All my life. We live on the farm where I was raised.

2. What has the role of the farm wife meant to you?

A little bit of everything. All of the home childcare. In the beginning, we lived in the Earlie District and had pigs and chickens that I did the majority of chores. Keith farmed with his Dad and brother. We didn’t have enough land to live off so Keith had an oilfield job. I have always worked parttime and still am spare bus driver. After we moved to Rivercourse, we bought my family farm. Keith was able to farm full-time and so we worked on our own. That meant a more active role helping with cattle and field work. Mostly as the go-fer and truck driver, sprint and fall & also combining in fall. I have always been the farm book keeper, so my role as farm wife has been as a partner.

3. What has your husbands’ role been?

Keith’s role has been the “farmer” doing the majority of the farm work and decision making on crops and machinery and livestock. Although, we do discuss major purchases.»

Fall Boating - A Splendour To Experience Safely

If one of your annual rituals is to pull the boat and put it away for the winter at the first sign of frost, you’re missing out on a spectacular fall boating season.

While swimming and water sports may lose their lustre as the water temperature cools, taking in the fall colours of the shoreline from the water is nothing short of breathtaking. Pristine anchorages, normally clogged during July and August with hundreds of boats, now

offer quiet solitude. And, for anglers, the action is hot with fish actively feeding ahead of the long Winter freeze over.

As you stretch the boating season, however, there are a few precautions that the Canadian Safe Boating Council and its partners would like you to take that will maximize your safety and enjoyment.

Before heading out, be sure to check the weather. The mixing of warm and cold air can quickly spawn high winds and waves making it treacherous for

small boats. Fog, too, is an issue at this time of year making visibility difficult.

Should you find yourself in a fog bank, be sure to proceed slowly and sound your horn at regular intervals to alert other boaters of your presence.

self in the water. Accidental cold water immersion can be shocking, but don’t panic. It may take a minute or so to get your breathing under control after the initial shock but you will have at least 10-15 minutes, even in very cold water, to affect self-rescue before you will start to lose muscle control in your arms and leg. This is where an approved lifejacket, either inflatable or inherently buoyant, is an essential part of your wardrobe to keep you afloat.

Be sure to leave a float plan with a responsible person on shore who will know what to do if you’re overdue. A marine radio or cell phone will allow you to call for assistance should the need arise. Having a few tools and spare parts aboard will also allow you to fix minor problems that might otherwise cause you to be stranded out on the water.

Ensure that your boat and engine are in good shape and mechanically sound. Ethanol-based fuel can allow water contamination in the tank. Use a fuel additive to prevent water in the fuel line from freezing that could cause your engine to chug to a halt. If using portable fuel tanks, it’s a good idea to have a spare on board as a reserve.

As you head out, be wary of reduced water levels that can result after a long, hot and dr y summer season. Some of your favourite shallow water fishing holes may be inaccessible at this time of year. Also, while underway, keep a sharp lookout for debris and chunks of ice that could penetrate your boat’s hull at speed.

So, don’t be afraid to indulge in the splendour and peaceful solitude that Fall boating has to offer. Just keep in mind these few tips and prepare to build memories that will last till spring thaw.

Second Half Scoring Secures Second Consecutive Marauder Win

Three touchdowns in the final quarter boosted the score for the Vermilion Marauders to 49-18 over a short benched and gutsy Vegreville Vortex squad Friday afternoon (October 2).

The Marauders only had a five point lead at half time, 23-18, then overwhelmed the tired Vortex with three touchdowns in the final quarter for their first win at home and second consecutive win of the season.

A 60-yard punt return touchdown by Donovan Yaceyko at 10:41 of the first quarter put the Marauders on the board before their first offensive series. But their 7-0 lead was followed by 10 straight points on the strength of stand-out twoway player Nolan Kobelsky.

Kobelsky kicked a 25-yard field goal, scored a TD on one yard run and then added the convert. Kobelsky was trouble for the Marauders all game on offense, defence and special teams. He gained most of the Vortex yardage both as a rusher and receiver, and had the only interception of the day on either side. He managed to get punts off when a potential third down gamble didn’t work, returned kickoffs and punts.

The Vortex lead only lasted 24 seconds and took two plays, the kickoff and an end sweep that Marauder back Brayden Chilibeck turned into a 67-yard romp to the end zone. That play accounted for the majority of his 139 rushing yards.

Yaceyko scored his second touchdown of the quarter on the next Marauder series.

He had tipped and batted down passes from the much shorter Vortex quarterback Nicholas Cheremshynski. After the punt bounded away from him, Yaceyko found himself in a swarm of defenders and teammates. He stutter-stepped out of the pack, found daylight on the far side of the field and legged out the 80 yards to pay dirt The only thing that didn’t work out on the play was that his convert was wide.

But, his team was now up 20-10.

The Vortex outscored the Marauders in the second quarter. Yaceyko’s 25-yard field goal was the only time Vermilion hit the scoreboard, while Vegreville got a converted touchdown and a single on a penalty-filled drive and convert attempt.

Vegreville started the drive on their own 38 and began with a successful pass just into Marauder territory at the 53. An illegal contact on a receiver call after yards gained against the Vortex gave them a first down from midfield. They advanced to the Marauder 17 on an unnecessary roughness (horse collar) call, then rushed to the three. Kobelsky went into the end zone untouched, but the Marauders were called for unnecessary roughness, the penalty to be added to the kickoff.

A second unnecessary roughness call followed on the successful convert when the ball holder was tackled. This put the Vortex at the Marauder 35 for the kick off.

Kobelsky sent the ball through the end zone for a single.

Those would be the last points they Vortex scored in the game as the Marauders added four touchdowns in the second half.

Yaceyko’s third six points came on a 28-yard reverse, the only scoring in the third quarter.

Chilibeck would add two more –a five yard run a one yard jog--with Tyson Pulshulka rushing for the final Marauder touchdown.

The first of the fourth quarter touchdowns came from great field position. The opening Marauder punt was not fielded.

The Vortex player actually contacted the ball with his foot, and QB Brandon Maida, in on special teams, fell on the ball on the Vegreville 22. Yaceyko took the ball to the five, and then Chilibeck scored.

The next touchdown drive included receptions by Noah Sanson and Gage

Myshak, but were set up by a 42-yard run of determination and perseverance by Chilibeck who put in a sixth effort to get to the Vortex 24 before eventually scoring from the one.

Pulshulka showed the same grit refusing to be brought down in his three carries for the final Marauder score.

After taking over on downs with less than 90 seconds in the game, Maida took a knee after the snap on three plays. Vegreville grabbed the chance at the ball moving to the Marauder 29 from their own 37 on another Kobelsky big play. Their hurry up offense couldn’t beat the clock.

Marauder points after: The Vortex are road warriors this season with no home games as their field is unplayable with school construction…Rookies Hayden Usenik and Ismail Gord Uddin both had sacks. Usenik had two and received the captains’ star…Chilibeck’s success as a passer went to 2 for 3. After touchdowns and more than 100 yards on his first two attempts, the third was intercepted by Kobelsky. Maida was 8 of 11 for 82 yards which may be enough to keep him close to the top in league standings.

Members had an excellent day of target and skeet shooting while others were busy learning about edible plants and how to make fire from only a flint and dry lint.
