The Legend Of The Gold Dust Twins

There are intertwining fates in the world of rodeos and stampedes that determine the creation of legends.

There are bucking horses that are said to be unbreakable, and there are cowboys looking to break the unbreakable and stake their own claim to fame in riding history. And of course, legends in the making require an arena where they can perform.

The biggest Stampede in the Vermilion area was the Queenie Creek Stampede

which officially began in 1919 and ran until 1925. It was held just 14 miles due north of Vermilion (section 1-53-7 W4).

According to local author and historian Allen Ronaghan, the Queenie Creek Stampede drew about 2,000 people every year with between 200 to 400 cars that could be seen parked on the hill that served as a natural amphitheater for attendees.

“You could watch from your car or sit on the hill,” said Ronaghan.

The President of the Queenie Creek Stampede Association was Anthony Dixon.

According to the book Vermilion Memories, Pauline Dixon recounted Anthony purchased land in the Queenie Creek District because it had a creek running through it and it also had access to lots of open land for his stock.

He furnished the horses for the Stampede. Among his horses were the famous Gold Dust Twins. They were a pair of black geldings that were fierce buckers and as local legend has it, they were never broken during their days at the Queenie Creek Stampede.

Some of the best riders came to the Stampede said Ronaghan. Leo Apperson, Slim Blatchford, Jim Butz, Slim Clark, Dar Enfield, Harry Forbes, Chester Gamble, Johnny Grey, Bill Gutoski, Clark Jackson and Art Ronaghan and Homer Campbell, to name just a few.

When CPR decided to fence in the open land where the Queenie Creek Stampede took place, it sealed the Stampede’s fate.

The last Stampede was held on July 8, 1925 and a $100 prize was offered to any man who could kick and ride one of the Gold Dust Twins.

The prize money was never collected.

As a result of CPR’s fencing of the open land, Anthony Dixon was forced to sell off his horses.

Enter Peter Welsh who, according to Canadian Cowboy Country magazine, had a real eye for spotting quality horses.

CPR employed his services to purchase horses for new settlers. Apparently he took the opportunity to purchase the finest for himself.

Eventually be formed the Alberta Stampede Company and began buying the best bucking horses around, including Midnight, a bucking legend that he paid the handsome fee of $500 for.

But he didn’t stop there. According to Ronaghan’s excerpt on the Queenie Creek Stampede in Vermilion Memories, Welsh bought three carloads of broncs just to get his hands on the legendary Gold Dust Twins.

Welsh was able to acquire rodeo contracts across Canada, including the Calgary Stampede, and throughout the U.S. based on the legendary bucking status of his horses, including the Gold Dust Twins.

In the ensuing years, through all the rodeos and stampedes the famous buckers appeared in, one of the Gold Dust Twins was never ridden.

So the legend goes.

St. Jerome’s Fall Supper Success

It was another success for St. Jerome’s annual Fall Supper this year due to the efforts of the school and the community of Vermilion.

“With the two seatings we’ve fed over 600 people here tonight,” said St. Jerome’s Principal Allan Chase.

“The funds support the running of all our sports teams and different cultural events and leadership groups throughout the school year.

We get money from the government for each student and then everything we do af ter school comes from school generated funds. “ So pret t y mu c h ever y ac tiv-

it y is suppor ted by these funds because we don’t get paid for the instructors. Operating a school is extremely expensive,” said Principal Chase.

“The Fall Supper is always a very popular event. Our local seniors came out for the early sitting and that was great to see.”

The students did a lot of work peeling the potatoes. Most of the food was donated by the families themselves. All of the potatoes and vegetables were donated by the families. “ I w o u l d r e a l l y l i ke t o t h a n k everyone involved for all their help in making the evening such a huge Shannon and Sean Tennant with their children Harper and Brady enjoy dinner at the Fall success,” said Chase.”

Prospect Calves Up For Bid Online

Ockerman Prospect Calves held an Open House and BBQ on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, to showcase the eight calves that will be up for bid during their online auction hosted by E5showcase. com, on Oct. 2, 3, and 4.

“The Ockerman’s have been fantastic. They were one of the first to use our site,” said owner/operator of E5 Showcase Clayton Elliott.

Last year Ockerman Prospect Calves put their calves up for bid online and it worked really well for them said April Ockerman, who personally works with all the calves from grooming to halter breaking.

“I’d like to see every single one of these calves go to a 4-H kid,” added Ockerman, who was a 4-H member herself for ten years.

While I have been off recouping from my surgery, I have been extremely bored which has led me to read Facebook posts on a pretty regular basis. In doing so, I have seen numerous memes about the Muslim culture. These memes have been what I would consider a bit on a hateful note.

I sat there wondering what rock I had been living under, that I didn’t understand why the Muslim people/culture was being targeted, so I posted a question in my Facebook status bar asking “What’s up with all the posts about Muslims lately? Was I under a rock the last little while and missed why there is so much hate on the go? Someone want to fill me in?”

I was surprised how quickly I got responses back from people regarding the questions in my post. They went like this: “Our government wants to bring them in by the thousands, starting with 10,000.”

I responded back and asked if the “them” they were referring to were the Syrian refugees and the reply was “Yes.” I could not understand why so many people seemed to be against our government accepting refugees into our country like we have in the past.

I started researching the internet to see why our country, which is known for its compassion and eagerness to help, has shifted from this stance during this crisis.

One reason that seemed to come up most frequently is the safety of Canadians.

Keeping Cultures Alive

Canadians are afraid that terrorists such as ISIS will slip into Canada as refugees and start planning their attacks on Canadian soil. In a new “Ipsos poll” conducted September 11- 13, 2015, 71 per cent said, “We can’t compromise Canada’s security, and individual Syrian refugees should go through proper screening to make sure they aren’t terrorists even if this slows down their admission to Canada.”

Another reason is our recent slip into a recession. Many people feel as though our government should be more concerned about looking after their own instead of helping a country that will continue to kill each other for many more years. People feel that no matter how many refugees we take in, we cannot fix the problems there. Millions are already settled in refugee camps away from being under fire or starving. Some Canadians feel as though our economy cannot withstand the strain of carrying so many refugees. They do not disagree with sending humanitarian aid.

I can understand people’s fears regarding the insurgence of terrorists who could possibly slip through the cracks posing as innocent refugees and I can understand people wanting our government to look after their own who are losing their jobs at a rather alarming rate. But are people making their decisions or judgments on facts or are they jumping on a bandwagon of let’s hate all Muslims no matter what the circumstances?

This past weekend we celebrated Cultural Days in Vermilion, to show the cultural diversity we have in just our own little town. I come from Newfoundland which has a completely different culture than here

than hanging.

However, a person demented enough to do what Hailey’s assailant reportedly did, would likely not be deterred by the death penalty.

Executing him, as appealing as it may be, would serve only as revenge.

Why, though, do we have to let these people free? We should not be asked to share our free space with the likes of him, nor be faced with the prospect of re-offence.

in Vermilion. We dress differently in many ways. We wear rubber boots and rubber jackets the same as they wear cowboy boots and hats here. We speak a different language, as Newfoundland has its own version of the English language. The point is you don’t have to be from a different country to have a different culture.

I do find the memes I have seen a little disturbing. If someone decides to wear a hijab as part of their culture who cares? Who are we to say they shouldn’t keep some of their own personal beliefs just because they come to Canada to live. To each their own on what they keep as a personal belief just because it is different doesn’t mean it is wrong.

On the flip side though I do believe that if you come to another’s country you should tailor your beliefs to also fit within the culture that you are living in and not try to change their belief system to suit your own. For example the political correctness of saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas to not offend people who have come to my country. Or not saying the Lord’s Prayer in schools anymore to not offend the nonChristians, even though they can be excused from classes to perform their religious rituals. There are some things that should not change for any reason and I believe the couple of examples above should never have changed to please a culture that is not originally Canadian. If I was to move to a Muslim culture for example, I would have no

choice but to adjust my beliefs. I would have to dress as they do and follow their culture to a certain extent.

I think as a country, it is our obligation to help the innocent no matter what the circumstances, who knows maybe someday we could be facing devastation and need the help in return. We should never let fear and propaganda guide us as a nation. We should keep our compassion for other human beings and help in whatever way we can.

And secondly, we need to learn to stand up for the culture we have always had and not worry about offending the newcomers.

Continue our beliefs and take the words politically correct and toss them in the garbage. We are Canadians and if I want to say Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays I will. I will not be worrying about offending someone who has come to my country.

There was definitely frost on the ole pumpkins this morning, well at least on the windshield that I had to s crape for the first time this year, ironic sign as today, September 22 nd, is the first day of autumn.

So summer is officially over also today, it went too fast as most do, but I also enjoy a nice autumn day as much as summer. We just have to acclimatize once again, light jackets and preparations are now in order.

It has been a weird end to summer as Mother Nature seemed to have developed a bad case of post nasal drip to end it off, it’s been really wet… for ever yone except maybe for the ducks flying south.

Still a lot of crops on the fields of our farming neighbour and friends, the wet weather has put them way behind on harvest, first they had to deal with drought like conditions to star t the year.

Let’s hope for them that the start of autumn is nice and dry, although long range forecast for the nex t couple weeks calls for more post nasal drip.

Things seem to get weird when we get a lot of east and south winds.

This summer we saw a lot of these east and south winds. The winds really affect our bowhunting also, it affects animals strangely not so much with deer or moose, but elk really change their habits.

I have kept journals for many years and it shows exactly the same thing, on years with east winds the elk movement changes as does normal rut or

breeding season activities.

Meaning it’s slow with bowhunting elk in September, but gets better in mid-October during their second rut phase, and things seem to return to normal in the late fall.

This past weekend I listened to a cow moose sweet talking the bulls, which didn’t take long to bring two large bulls in close by for noisy action.

Now when I say noisy, it is normally very noisy when the moose are very close on a still morning sunrise, to take noisy to another level this was a morning that I was wearing a set of Walkers Game Ears.

Now when I tell people that I can see them picturing me standing in the bush with a big set of fake moose ears or something, but these are actually just hearing enhancers.

They are like a set of ear noise d efe n d er s or “ear mu f fs ” h owever, these having hearing enhancers in b ot h s i d e s…o n e c a n “ tur n u p t h e volume” on the world, and I am here to say there is no still quiet mornings.

Being the child of a noisy generation with Rock N Roll, loud machinery and tools, firearms etc., without being hearing loss conscious we never used hearing protection and hence my hearing is minimal now.

I use hearing protection now even when cutting the lawn, but too little too late; I hope we teach our future generations just how important our hearing is and how easy it can be compromised.

These hearing enhancer muffs actually work as hearing defenders also and if a loud noise suddenly happened they shut off instantly and protect your hearing also; with hearing enhancer

turned on the world is a different place with normal hearing.

It is actually ver y noisy, besides hearing distant elk bugling…my main goal, birds are chirping, geese are honking, all kinds of water fowl are splashing around in water.

Moo cows are mooing and farting, and it seems like it is happening on your lap, so when the moose came to the cow moose call, they both showing off started to rake trees with mayhem intensity.

At times you want to duck for falling trees, but you are actually a safe distance away, now if this wasn’t bad enough a young bull elk decided to join in on the tree destruction.

With all the mayhem, the robins were heckling them, birds and small animals were running and flying for cover, standing in an open wood pile blind, enhanced the noise even more.

Then I heard a loud fluttering whirling noise and turned toward the treeline just meters away, and saw several projectiles coming fast right at me. Now being close to the military base and hearing them in the distance shooting ordnan c e now enhan c ed fear!

I ducked as one of the projectiles whizzed by my head at arm’s length, if I had a place to dive Im sure I would have been face first in the ear th, I pictured a couple rogue 500 pounder bombs giving me a bad day.

However the projectiles were just huge sharptail grouse vacating the tree demolition at mock chicken speed. With my heart pounding I shut off the hearing enhancers, took them off and stashed them in my pack.

Maybe this perfect hearing thing isn’t all it’s made up to be; sure is a scary noisy world at times.

Miss Pickles Chronicles Once again I could write a book on the Miss Pickle’s antics, this one a result of the weird weather mentioned earlier, as my garden is also weird this year.

Drought and flood conditions made for weird growth. My corn, over 9 feet tall in spots, is mostly producing huge ears but small skinny cobs of corn, most not worth picking yet.

As I made my way into the middle of the tall maze seeking the perfect ear of corn, my hearing good enough to hear a loud “pop” “crash” “pop” ”pop”, thinking she was still playing with the shucked corn.

But no, it was a flash a corn silk covered Pickle streaking thru the corn popping cobs of corn off the stalks as fast as she could. This was the best game ever.

When The Smoke Clears By the time I caught Miss Pickles and wrestled her to the ground half the corn plantation laid in waste, she looked at me with a corn cob still in her mouth and I swear a smile, as if to say…no need to thank me!!

I actually heard people that were sitting around the kitchen table in our home, telling stories how they had been able to select a nice patch of prairie hay and owned it just by making a round with their mower and claiming all the hay inside the circle!! First come – first served.

Dad had a herd of work horses that ran loose all winter on open land, because horses if they had lots of space, could paw for their own fare and you didn’t have to put up feed for them all winter!!

The only fenced land was the broken farm land, and you needed a good fence to keep all the free ranging cattle out. In winter these free ranging horses loved to find a straw pile, and it caused many to die if they lay down and got their back down hill. They simply couldn’t get up and got to be coyote bait.

Dad and his brother Herman wanted their father to buy some of those homesteads. Grandpa said, “ What for?!”

Some land had sold for 40 cents an acre. That had fences and plowed land too. Think of that now with what land sells for.

The feeling was, why would you own land and have to pay taxes on it, when you could get free pasture by turning your cattle out on open land and har vest hay on the same. Until the herd law came into effect that was the modus operandi in much of this country.

At the end of WWII, a soldier’s settlement bill granted veterans a choice of getting a start farming, or an education. Many farm boys took the option of a farm and a lot of the open land was finally settled and farmed.

Summer is nearly over and I wonder if any went on river excursions this year. I, having watched the rivers, as we travelled by road, thought how much travelling on the rivers is like the “river of life”. A river can be smooth running as we embark but can quickly change around a bend, unexpectedly.

When I got a Farm Credit loan to buy my Uncle Fred’s farm, I paid about two thousand dollars a quarter for all five quarters. He told me the most he paid for any one of the quarters, was six hundred dollars. He thought he’d done well for himself.

I’ll never forget the paper tangle and shuffle involved in getting the F.C.C. form and it was nice to have my mom co-sign the loan to make it possible.

Then, a few years of living in Uncle Fred and Aunt Ruth’s old house, we’d had a fill of contending with the mice that had designs on our little space too and decided we needed new diggings.

The problems of extending the loan to build a new home were worse than the original. We also would need a new well, a pressure system for running water and of course a septic sewage system!!

Well, it took a good bit of the spring and summer to get by that hurdle and of course the corporation needed us to get tenders on ALL the work and materials.

‘Bear Sighting’ declares the giant reflective sign posted at both entrances to the lake hamlet. A graphic of a black bear walking is centred between the two words. People, if you meet any along the mostly abandoned dirt roads between rows of cabins, never fail to mention it. ‘Bear in the area’. Knowing that lends a certain edge to the day. You walk down the path in the woods with a heightened awareness.

You consider escape options. You pull your shoes on all the way instead of walking on the backs of them for your morning shuffle through the forest as though the most ominous threat to your peace might be an acorn tossed from the camouflage of tall pines by a mischievous squirrel.

Neither you nor anyone you’ve spoken with has actually seen a bear. Someone somewhere has though, and that is enough.

Too many, too much, too disruptive, too costly. The challenges are overwhelming for all players. Confusion and fear are juxtaposed with managing what is for most agencies an unprecedented nightmare of humanitarian suffering.

In Canada, we become weary from the barrage of unstoppable political campaigning, its accompanying media coverage and pundit analysis, polls, propaganda, debates rife with rhetoric, sniping between candidates of rivalling parties jockeying for position of most desirable to the populace. Has there been a time in Canadian history when interest in politics has been so much a part of everyday conversation? Is the discourse, the language, the policies of our respective politicians, drawing us more together as a nation or inciting us to differentiate between those who are bona fide, worthy (old stock?)

Building fences and walls, building divisions between people, inviting us to beware of a perpetual threat that someone unlike ourselves poses leads to just that: The End. We become uneasy inhabitants of a suspicious world.

There’s a photo of children of all sizes and colour surrounding Waters onstage during a stage production of The Wall. Their arms are raised to the sky, open. On their t-shirts, three words in giant letters declare: Fear Builds Walls.

There may well be a bear in the woods.

Maybe down the street, there may lurk a fellow human being with un-cool intent. Or maybe not. Anything is possible, it seems, in this world. Walking forward, though, seems a more appealing option than does cowering in fear of the unsavoury unseen maybe.

We have been able to provide, through our own resources and with the help of sponsors, kits for all kindergarten children in Vermilion Elementary School and St. Jerome’s. These kits consist of two books, a colourful book bag, and a free one-year children’s membership for the Vermilion Public Library. We hope this will help fami-

lies to establish a strong interest in reading at this important time in their children’s life, and encourage them to view the library as a valuable resource for both entertainment and learning. On September 16th, staff from the library visited the kindergarten classes in both schools. Library manager Stuart Pauls read stories to the children and explained to the children some of the resources they might find at the library, and presented the kits. We are looking forward to seeing these young people at our library in the future.

could do?

I had just read that dieters that ate a piece of chocolate cake for breakfast lost 20 lbs more than those in the control group that did not eat the chocolate cake. Very interesting and unexpected results!

This recipe is influenced by the classic no-bake chocolate hay stack drop cookie recipe, and a desire for less sugar. Because this recipe is baked, and uses eggs as a binder, you can use much less sugar. If you prefer even less sugar, then you can use 6 or 7 small packets of stevia with 1/4 cup of brown sugar, for an even healthier option.

You might be able to drop the batter onto a greased cookie sheet or parchment paper to make baked hay stacks, but I have not done that yet, so I am not sure how long you would bake them for.

Another great variation is to stir in 1 cup of chocolate chips into the batter, for an extra layer of chocolate flavour.

Ingredients such as oats, cocoa powder, coconut, olive oil, butter, cinnamon and green tea all have their own unique health benefits, and this square combines them all.

This could very well be a guilt-free and healthy chocolate cake. This recipe is glutenfree, and if you need it to be dairy -free, then you can substitute coconut oil for the butter.

You can enjoy these chocolate oat bales as a breakfast bar, or in a bowl with milk or cream, or as a desert square with a drizzle of icing or a sprinkle of powdered icing sugar.

Grade 1 students are excited to be learning about seasonal changes in the fall as part of their science curriculum. They enjoyed going on a fall walk to a nearby park to do an observation of an autumn tree. Once there, they took the time to study and observe all of the tree’s details and then they drew a pencil sketch of the tree. Their drawings were amazing.

Once again, the Grade 6 classes have planted some trees in our playground.

They are working on volunteerism skills and participating in bettering their community through actively being involved. The added benefit of planting more trees is to purify the air we breathe. The Grade 6 students will continue to take care of the trees by watering them and ensuring they are ready for the winter months. Should they not survive, they will plant more in the spring.

On September 21, the first Parent Advisory Council meeting of the school year took place. In a separate bowl beat the eggs, then add the butter and oil, lukewarm or cool green tea and the vanilla.

Pour the liquid into the dry and stir.

Pour in to an 8” x 8” buttered square pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Serve warm or cold. Makes 9 to 18 servings. I like cutting them into rectangle bale sizes.

A new hair salon recently opened on main street, Vermilion. The former staff at Jellybeans have joined in partnership as owners of the new ‘Twisted Sisters Hair Salon.’

The old salon is now leased out to the Vermilion Outreach School.

“We are excited about the change and look forward to our new adventure,” said hairstylist and owner Meaghan Roth, “Our move happened fast, as we wanted to keep our down time to one week. So with substantial help from our family and friends, crazy long hours of moving and renovating... here we are!”

“We are a tight group here (like sisters!) and we look forward to seeing our regular clientele and want to welcome new clients to our hair salon.

Last week was event ful and busy for the Marauder c r e w. O n T h u r s day, September 24, 2015, J. R. Robson School kicked off its annual fundraiser event selling magazine subscriptions and renewals to the community for a reduced rate. QSP, the sales provider, offers excellent savings to its subscribers of hundreds of magazine titles while still giving the school a substantial amount of the profits. Sellers are encouraged to sell subscriptions to raise funds for school events such as dances, contests, and seasonal activities. Cross-country runners participated in their second meet of the season last week as they hosted Zones at Vermilion Provincial Park. Students combated the hilly terrain of the west end of the park where they’ve been training thus far.

Friday, September 25 as part of Alberta Culture Days. The drummers were spectacular, entertaining the students for over an hour with their amazing skills, beautiful costumes and incredible music.

Earlier in the day, a storyteller as part of

Alberta Culture Days entertained Grade 4, 5 and 6 students as well. The students were captivated by the stories shared with them.

The Grade 10 class had rainy days for retreat but still had a great time building life-long bonds and creating amazing memories. The class headed to Camp Encounter early on the morning of September 14 along with Mr. MacMillan, Mrs. Bielech, and Mrs. Krys. They had a great time playing a variety of games, canoeing on the lake, enjoying delicious meals and warm campfires. They took time to reflect and write letters to themselves. The students enjoyed the time together and can’t wait till next year’s retreat.

Congratulations to the St. Jerome’s Cross Country team for their excellent showing at Riverdale on Wednesday, September 16. Congratulations to each of these runners for placing in the top six for their age group: 1st – Anna Ulrich, 3rd – Kaylie Krys, Alex McCullough, 4th – Jayce Sweeney, 5th – Seth Mansfield, and 6th – Clay Corbiere. Mannville Elks # 395 made to our Hot Lunch Program was greatly appreciated.

The Grade 2 class has had a wonderful start to their year. The students are already taking Accelerated Reading quizzes and many of them have earned their first point. What a great way to reach our year end goal of 20 points per student!

The Grade 3 class has settled into their daily classroom routines. They are on their way to reaching their Accelerated Reading goal for the month. In September the students worked on patterns in math and learned the properties of rocks in science. The students all brought a rock to school and in groups sorted, classified and examined their properties. After

each Canadian and this year our population is about $35.7 million.

With all the happenings and accomplishments at Dewberry School, it isn’t hard to visualize the persons our students are destined to be. They are heading in the direction of athletic, academic and devoted individuals. We are proud that personalities such as these are paving the way for the future.

The Grade 6’s have been busy learning about democracy. They have begun a group project that will last for the year on creating their ideal society. PAWS for Pr i d e Day o n Fr i d ay, September 18th was a huge success for our school! Our day began with PAC members and community volunteers preparing a wonderful pancake breakfast for our school community. Parents, siblings and other members of the community were invited to attend and we were so pleased to see the large crowd.

We kicked off our Terry Fox run by gathering in the gymnasium to watch a short video before we walked around town. It was wonderful to see the entire school population as well as members of the community walk around Mannville holding flags that showed the many wonderful traits Terry Fox possessed.

Before the day came to a close, our talented staff organized school-wide activities, all anchored to our PRIDE focus. We are so proud of our students and staff! Go Royals!!

School picture day will be on Thursday, October 1st at 9:00 a.m. and retakes have already been booked for November 17th. We are always looking for two volunteers to help on picture day, making sure our little ones are picture perfect. If you can help, please let the school office know. Thank you.

A Day In The Life Of A Professional Photographer

Kim Morritt, MPA (Master of Photo graphic Arts) winner of the prestigious Alberta Professional Photographer of the Year award (2014), and her husband Brian, opened Dragon Hare Studios in 2007. They specialize in portrait photography featuring graduations, families, and weddings.

Kim is also the mother of five children who are homeschooled through the School of Hope. The Voice sat down with Kim to get some perspective on a day in the life of a professional photographer.

Why is your photography studio named Dragon Hare?

It is the combination of my Chinese zodiac sign and my husband’s. He’s the dragon and I’m the hare. We chose our name to show that we work together as a team to create each image.

What inspired you to be a photographer?

I always had a creative side. I made my first portrait when I was five. I took Industrial Education in school because there was photography in it. We developed our own pictures in the darkroom. I always loved photography, but it never occurred to me it could be a career.

What made you decide it could be your career?

I was working as a research technician when I decided to go back to school for photography. I heard a story about a man who had spent 37 years in a job he hated. I thought that was so sad. I wanted to do something more creative. I looked into two schools and decided on the Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners

Falls, Massachusetts. It was ten months long and focussed only on photography.

The other school was a degree program.

I already had a degree in science. I didn’t want to take English or any other courses.

I just wanted to do photography. Then after looking further into it I found out there was a $100 application fee and said to my husband, ‘I don’t want to waste the money.’ He sent in the application and fee for me.

How old were you when you went back to school?

I was 31. Everyone else in the class was 18. While they were all off partying, I was learning how to use the camera. Even though there were some huge challenges, I recommend it to anyone who is thinking of returning to school later in life. I smiled all the time I was there.

Did you always do portrait photography?

We did commercial photography in Calgary. It was fun; everyday was something new; from photographing pancakes and French fries, to clothing and shoes.

We did the Mark’s Work Wearhouse catalogues. But it got old fast. You would have an Art Director calling you from a golf course telling you to make a jacket look more ‘juicy’. How do you make a canvas jacket look juicy?

Would you consider photography to be more technical or more artistic?

I would say it is 90 per cent technical and 10 per cent creative. You need to overcome the ability of the camera. The camera sees the world different. We see in 3D, the camera doesn’t. You need to understand, light, posing, and composition. I use my science background on a daily basis.

What is the most important element

in photography?

It has to be light. It doesn’t matter what you do in photoshop if you don’t have any light, the image will be flat. Light gives dimension, depth of field, and perspective. The word photograph is from the Greek and it literally means drawing with light.

How do you capture someone’s essence in a portrait?

I’m a people watcher. I watch for body language. I put my clients in a pose that is already natural for them, but with my tweaks on it so it looks great on camera.

Then I concentrate on expression.

Is there an element of magic involved in taking great photographs?

Yes. I watch for magic to happen and am ready when it does. Like this engaged couple, they were standing in front of a fence that had a big hog stirring up mud in it. I was trying to hurry in taking my portrait before mud splattered on them when a sheep wandered into the frame. That’s the magic!

Do you prefer shooting in your studio, or on location?

In the studio I don’t have to wait for the right light; I can create it. I can control things in the studio, but then I don’t have sheep walking into my photos. They have different uses; it depends on who I’m photographing.

How would you describe your style of photography?

Real life - pure and clean.

Who inspires you?

Any photographer who has mastered the technical side on a higher level than me; it helps me study the technical aspect.

I am more inspired by my clients and the sky and how to bring those two elements together.

Do you have any mentors?

Yes - Robert Bray, Ian Grant, Tracey Harper and Claude Brazeau. I took my portfolio to Tracey and Claude. Claude told me I stayed too safe. I would never take risks with my clients but I am pushing myself on a few personal projects.

One of them is a seniors’ project where I am able to focus more on artistry. It’s ongoing.

Do you have a favourite photograph?

It changes - I get a really cool one and it’s my new favourite.

What is your favourite session to photograph?

Grads are my absolute favourite. They are tentative about who they are. I like to help them show the world how they define themselves. That’s the reward - watching them open up and letting me in so I can create a defining portrait for them. That’s a really cool gift I don’t take lightly.

What advice would you give a photographer just starting out?

Find mentors, join the Professional Photographers of Canada and learn the technical before you take on a client. What if that is their last portrait? Every image has to count.

Federal Conservative Candidate In Lakeland

Submitted There’s no question, seniors are the cornerstone of our country.

Not only do many maintain their full-time jobs as parents and grandparents, but they are so generous in giving their time back as volunteers at churches, service clubs, food banks and other charitable organizations.

These are contributions to our communities many have made throughout their whole lives.

As the federal Conservative candidate for Lakeland, I have seen this time and time again as I’ve travelled around the constituency. Our seniors have not only built on the bedrock, but they make sure the foundation of our communities stay strong. But despite these incredible influences, seniors too often do not receive the full respect they deserve.

For seniors on fixed incomes, they want life to stay affordable. Just as important is to make sure their pensions are protected and they have a government in Ottawa that puts their interests first.

I’m proud of the work our Conservative government has done to recognize the invaluable contributions of our seniors.

Under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, we introduced pension income splitting. For the first time, seniors are able to split their pension with their spouse or partner, without having to be dinged with extra taxes.

And there are other examples of the way the federal Conservative government has made it simpler for seniors to save. As part

of the balanced budget plan, the federal Conservative government introduced Tax Free Savings Accounts, which are used mostly by seniors and by middle and low income Canadians, and expanded the saving limits so seniors can continue to save and grow their investments.

But we recognize our job to improve the life of our seniors isn’t done.

A re-elected Conservative government will introduce a $2,000 Single Seniors Tax Credit that will extend additional tax relief to nearly 1.6 million single and widowed seniors in Canada who have pension income, because we recognize that single and widowed seniors face additional challenges.

When combined with the existing Pension Income Credit that is claimed by 4.6 million seniors already, this measure will allow single and widowed seniors to receive up to $600 in tax relief every year.

This extra $600 in tax relief will help manage the unique financial challenges faced by seniors, especially recently widowed and those on single, fixed incomes. It will help seniors save for trips to see their kids or grandchildren and will make sure seniors can spend more of their money on the priorities that matter to them most.

Our government can make these types of critical investments for our seniors because of our predictable and stable plan to stay on course with balanced budgets so core services and benefits are sustainable into the future.

Unlike the Liberals and NDP who are putting forward risky permanent new spending schemes they can’t afford, our Conservative plan is realistic and is already making an immediate difference.

Worse yet, we’ve heard from both Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair they want to claw back many of the benefits our government has introduced.

While the deliver y of long term care, assisted living and home care are the responsibility of provincial governments, and the federal Conservative government has consistently increased the Health and Social Transfer to provinces for that purpose among others, there are two other important measures the federal Conservative government implemented to better support seniors.

The new home-accessibility tax credit applies for both seniors and people with disabilities will provide up to $1,500 in tax relief for home renovations such as wheelchair ramps, walk-in bathtubs, wheel-in showers and grab bars. Compassionate-care benefits offered through Employment Insurance have also been extended to six months from six weeks. This support recognizes the commitment required of those who must be away from work to care for family members who are gravely ill.

I believe we can make life easier and more affordable for the people who built our communities, here in Lakeland, and across Canada.

Advancing our proven record of support, seniors can trust Conservatives will continue to be there for them.

New Program For Military Members In Transition To Civilian Life

Reporter Lakeland College is now piloting The Way Forward, a Transitional Life Skills for military members and their families. The program is an online resource that is free to members, spouses and dependents.

Lakeland College accessibility advisor Dale Pearce said last week he was grateful for the $2,500 funding towards the new online program called, The Way Forward.

“We found that there is a gap for people coming out of the military going into civilian life which has not really been addressed,” said Pearce.

Pearce left the Canadian Navy himself after serving for over 20 years and said it was a difficult time.

“It was one of the saddest days of my life. You lose the camaraderie, and you lose your identity.

“We started doing further research and we found out that there are similar programs out there but in our case we are more about the soft skills, we are not taking the members to civilian employment like a lot of other programs do, we are looking at helping military members adapt.

“How do you function in a normal work space when you are so used to being institutionalized and living under so much discipline?

“ When getting out of the militar y the individual is going to be at home 24/ 7, how do they adapt to that environment and re-establish the relationship with their family and extended families, how do you communicate in a new work environment when you are so used to living a structured life? This is what we looked at. We looked at the culture shock when leaving a very structured organization into a very unstructured and at times chaotic situation,” explained Pearce.

The new program was laun c hed on September 14 and is being offered now to military members in Cold Lake, Wainwright and Edmonton. Students in the course complete modules on communication, organization, goals, transition challenges, emotions, mental health and resources.

“There are a lot of resources that can go into an exmilitary member’s tool box; we are just one of those tools. We are providing ex-military members and serving members with the resources that can assist them with their transition and I hope that members will take us up on this. I would like to thank the Royal Canadian Legion for their donation and I would like to thank my colleagues and the executive here at Lakeland College for their input and support,” said Pearce.

Liberal Candidate Garry Parenteu Gears Up For Election Race

Liberal candidate Garry Parenteau believes he can help bring change to the Lakeland constituency. Parenteau lived in the Lakeland area all his life and came from a background in public administration.

“People should vote for me because I have years of experience in local politics and also at a federal level,” said Parenteau last week.

Parenteau said he was surprised at the significant change in government in Alberta earlier this year and that he believes Lakeland should have a strong voice in Ottawa.

“Alberta is going through a hard time right now, and regardless which party gets elected they will have to deal with it. As our party leader has said we will be promoting programs for recreating, to help people who are affected by the current downturn.

“We have to look at new sources of

energy, we have to diversify and people who are out of work have to be supported.

“We have to make sure that scientists have the ability to make their reports public.

An example of this would be the reports that were done for the Northern Gateway pipeline, a lot of that report was done a few years ago and kept under wraps, and those reports should be open to the public and readily available. We have some very good scientists here in Canada, but we are not utilizing our knowledge base as much as we should be,” said Parenteau.

Parenteau says he will be voting for Justin Trudeau for the next Prime Minister. When questioned on whether Trudeau had a lack of experience or not, Parenteau said, “It’s a new job and a new election. How do you get experience as Prime Minister unless you are elected?!”

Parenteau served as the Chairperson of

the Fishing Lake Métis Settlement, the Vice- encouraged to attend.

He served as the representative of the Métis Settlements General Council to the federal government in Ottawa.

He also served as the Vice President of Finance for the Liberal Party of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples Commission from 2000 to 2003. He is a resident of the Fishing Lake Métis Settlement, and serves as the Settlement’s Oil and Gas Director.

Guest speaker Kristen Cumming will give a presentation ‘Let It Suck,’ providing insight to recruitment and retention, performance management, high performance teams, and leadership.

Kristen Cumming’s career has been focused on improving the connection between people and their work. She will discuss the process of identifying, addressing and correcting performance issues, both for the employee and their supervisor.

The presentation will review the process of performance correction and identify the common challenges that supervisors face in the process.

Generally, performance correction creates both an emotional and performance vacuum, this session will explore when and how to “let it suck” and when to fill the void.

The session will be interesting for anyone who supervises employees and has peak performance in mind for their direct reports, teams and the organization.

Cumming’s 20 years experience in career development and human resources is coupled with her passion for demography.

These women have been pillars in their communities for a very long time, and they continue to be today.

I have been so moved by this tireless devotion, in fact, that I’ve just completed writing a book, which profiles and celebrates them. My aim is to give them the recognition they deserve, and to honor their legacies to the larger patchwork of

Vermilion Allied Arts Council 2015-16 Season Lineup!

Submitted The Performing Arts season begins next month, and we have a lineup of exciting performers coming to the Alumni Hall at Lakeland College in Vermilion. Shows begin at 8:00 p.m.

The Carolines, on October 3, 2015, will fascinate with their superbly crafted Harmonies. Our thanks to Rona for sponsoring this presentation.

Going to Graceland! on November 7, 2015 is a skillful presentation of Paul Simon’s album (of the same name) by a 9-piece musical group from the Edmonton area. Many thanks to Richardson Denture Clinic for sponsoring this show.

On February 16, 2016, Karla Adolphe opens the show for the John Wort Hannam Trio with her folky guitar and a huge voice. John Wort Hannam has released five successful albums, capturing a Juno nomination, and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Album of the Year.

Young at Heart, in February, 2016 will be announced next month.

Celtic Fusion Illusion, on March 12, 2016 is known for taking audiences by storm with their unique style and repertoire that appeal to a wide audience.

The students at J.R. Robson gathered in the gym before their annual Terry Fox Walk on Sept. 24. Cheryl Felt, a counsellor at the school, relayed her own moving story about her cancer diagnosis to the students and what the Terry Fox Miracle of Hope Run meant to her on a personal level. Marauders Score Enough And Defend Enough For First Win

The Marauders were almost too tired to celebrate their first win of the season when quarterback Brandon Maida took a knee as the clock ran down to zero in Athabasca last Friday. They had survived a Pacer drive that ended on the Marauders one with less than a minute left in the game to preserve a 14-6 win.

With 1:40 left it looked as if the Marauders had prevented an Athabasca scoring drive as Carter Usenik took an interception from the end zone back to the Marauder 50, but there were two flags on the field at the end of the play.

Initially the officials called it offsetting unnecessary roughness penalties against each team with the interception as good and the Marauders in possession. But before the play resumed, they rethought their decision with a little prompting from the Athabasca bench. As the Marauder penalty was before the interception, it remained Athabasca ball.

However, the chains had been moved and no one was quite certain where the line of scrimmage had been. It was settled as the Vermilion 25.

The Pacers ran the ball inside the 10 for first and goal. Then Donovan Yaceyko threw the ball carrier for a five yard loss, putting the home side 2nd and 15. A completed pass brought them to the three-yard line for third and goal.

The Marauder defense that had buckled in the waning minutes tightened up and stopped the Pacers short of scoring six.

With 45.5 seconds left the Marauders took over on downs in the shadow of the goal line. Braydon Chilibeck took the ball up the middle for a couple, then on the next play found a seam and broke out for 56 yards to the Pacer 50. That gave the Marauders breathing room with less than 30 seconds

left in the game.

Coming off three difficult losses, the Marauders were hungry for the win. As with earlier games, scoring continued to be a challenge. During a scoreless first quarter, where the teams battled basically between the 35 yard lines, the Marauders had a touchdown called back on a double penalty of holding and illegal use of hands forcing the Marauders to punt.

The defence held firm giving the offence another shot taking over on downs on Pacer 53 with 1:22 left in the quarter. On the running strength of Chilibeck, Yaceyko and Tyson Pashulka, the Marauders moved to the Pacer 18.

On what could have been the last play of the quarter, the Pacers were called for pass interference in the end zone. Since a quarter can’t end on a penalty, the Marauders had another play at first and goal from the three.

Maida fumbled the snap and simply fell on the ball on the 1. Both teams were flagged as offside, so there had to be another play from the three.

After finally switching ends, Chilibeck went wide across the goal line, but a holding call pushed the Marauders back to first and goal from the 13. Noah Sanson got back 8 yards on a completion, before Yaceyko returned to the end zone and this time the TD counted.

He then picked up the bad snap and turned a one-point convert attempt into two points and an 8-0 lead.

Athabasca got close to scoring twice before the half ended. Usenik’s interception in the end zone snuffed out a Pacer drive.

Then Athabasca countered with a pick of their own, but they couldn’t move the ball with the Marauders getting back possession on downs. Trench warfare ensued with the teams trading possessions.

The Pacers had the last crack at scoring with 13 seconds left in the half. They moved

the ball from their own 43 to the Marauder 21. Hayden Usenik broke up the final pass attempt to end the half.

The Marauders, who deferred their choice to the second half took the ball to pay dirt on a quick drive that started from the kick off. On the second play, Chilibeck took a direct snap and found rookie Chandler Nelson for a 51-yard pass and run TD. The convert attempt was blocked.

There would more scoring in the game, although Athabasca pressed the closest in the waning minutes.

Marauder points after: Chilibeck is now 2 for 2 passing for over 100 yards and two TDs. He also had 129 rushing yards and five tackles on special teams and defence…

Yaceyko also played both ways with 96 rushing yards, 7 passing yards and four tackles while handling the punting duties…

The Usenik brothers were double trouble for the Pacer defense. Carter counted nine tackles along with an interception and two knockdowns. Rookie Hayden had two tackles and prevented a late first half Pacer TD knocking down a pass…Ryley Bates had six tackles continuing to be a leader in that Marauder stat…Centre Will Schneider had some defensive reps including a sack in the

final quarter…The Marauder defence had a solid effort across the board but did have trouble containing the outside run and Pacer back Cole Ghostkeeper…Maida was seven for 14 and 49 passing yards connecting with five different receivers.
