Kin’s Restaurant Owner Leaves Vermilion After 23 Years

Vermilion’s Kin’s Restaurant owner Kwan Ming Yip left Vermilion last week after 23 years of business in the town.

“I came to Vermilion in 1992,” said Ming. “I have had lots of good friends in Vermilion and they all come to my place, it’s been really enjoyable.

“I will miss Vermilion, I don’t like the big cities, they are too busy and Vermilion is a really peaceful place.”

Ming and his wife Winnie plan to first return to Hong Kong to take care of Ming’s Mother for 4 to 5 months and they will then return to live in Edmonton.

Ming was born in China and moved to Hong Kong at five years old. He grew up in Hong Kong until 1982; Ming then moved to Canada with his family when he was 26 years old.

“I came to Canada because I wanted to see something new. We had three kids then and it was a chance for my

children to have a better education.”

Ming calls both countries, Hong Ko ng an d Canad a , ho m e. H e has returned to Hong Kong every second year since he moved here.

Today he has five children, with four of them living in Alberta and one living in Toronto.

Ming, now 60 years old, said the re a s o n h e i s l e av i n g Ver m i l i o n i s because he wants to retire.

“I love cooking but my body needs to relax, I started working in the kitchen when I was 13 years old.

“I star ted planning for retirement 5 to 6 years ago. Business has been steady; my decision to leave had nothing to do with the oil downturn. It ’s because it’s time to relax.

“If I don’t like Edmonton, I might come back to Vermilion to buy a place.

I like this town, it’s really peaceful and Ming and Winnie said goodbye last week to customers at a get together in Kin’s Restaurant I will never forget the friends I made in Vermilion. Vermilion A & W Cruises To Record Amount Raised To Fight MS

“Vermilion is doing amazing,” said Client Services Coordinator for the MS Society (Lloydminster Chapter) Patty Milnthorp, when she heard that the Vermilion A&W restaurant almost tripled the amount of money raised for the Cruisin’ to end MS campaign, compared to last year.

“Last year the total money raised in Vermilion was $3,257.00. The total money raised in the Lloydminster chapter area, including Vermilion and Vegreville, was $13,500.

This year’s Vermilion total, not including Teen Burger sales, is sitting at

$8,086.53 said the Manager of the A&W restaurant in Vermilion, Mindy Anderson.

Anderson guesstimated from the amount of Teen Burgers sold on Aug. 27 approximately another $300 would be added to that total.

“We got a lot of positive feedback from the community and a lot of community support.”

Anderson also credited her staff for all of the effort they put in throughout the campaign.

“They were really pumped up,” said Anderson. “It couldn’t have happened without them.”

By the time the Cruisin’ to End MS Day took place on Aug. 27, Anderson

said the staff had already sold a lot of merchandise.

“I think the staff did a great job and we had a lot of customers coming in to see the new management.”

Anderson took over the position on June 26, just before the campaign got underway on July 1.

“I felt I needed to prove something to the community. This location had never done anything this big.”

The Vermilion location went all out this year and for the first time included activities such as an inflatable obstacle course, a dunk tank, Sprinkles the Clown, mascot Rooty the bear, face painting and balloon twisting. Approxi-

mately 22 cars showed up at the Vermilion location. “ We will still be selling merchandise,” added Anderson. “Anything sold from here on in will go toward the 2016 campaign.”

One dollar from the sale of every Teen Burger and Double Teen Burger on Aug. 27 also went toward the MS Society of Canada from 840 restaurants across the country.

Canada has the highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world and Alberta and Saskatchewan have the highest rates in Canada. Across Canada, $6.5 million was raised in the fight against MS last year.

A Thought Turns Into Reality

A thought has turned into reality for Vermilion resident David Rein.

Almost one year ago, on September 3, 2014, Rein started a new project.

He had the idea to build the world’s largest coffee cup from Tim Hortons gift cards.

Rein, who is an employee of Tim Hortons in Vermilion, said, “I would see numerous Tim Hortons gift cards b e i n g t h r ow n i n t h e g a r b a g e a n d thought to myself why not build a Tim Hortons cup out of them?”

The finished cup that is made out of 6050 cards now weighs in at approximately 200 pounds and stands 6’4” tall.

Rein acquired the gift cards by posting to EBay, and in a internet group c a l l e d T i m c a r d g e e k s , h e a s ke d people to send him gift cards. He had a great response and had people from all over Canada sending him boxes of gift cards.

Halfway through the project Rein

said, “I emailed Ripley’s Believe It Or Not to see if they would have any interest in purchasing the item. In just three hours I had a response from Ripley’s and we’re in the process of negotiating the terms of purchase.”

Besides a monetar y amount, he will receive four lifelong passes to any Ripley’s Believe It Or Not locations and free transport of the cup.

Rein is also in the running for a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest gift card collection comprised of 7900 cards.

Rein completed the cup August 16, 2015 and is still in talks with Ripley’s Believe It Or Not about when the cup will be transported to the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

The cup will be there for viewing until the spring of 2016, until it is moved to the Ripley’s museum in Cavendish, PEI for two years before returning back to the Niagara Falls location.

It’s that time of year again! Back to school for our children. Why does it always seem to come so fast each year?

I can honestly say, I am one of those moms who absolutely dreads the school year! Not because I don’t want my children to learn all the wonderful things they learn, I have just always dreaded it and to be honest, I am not exactly sure why.

When my first child was little, I was fortunate enough to not have to work and spent all my time with him. When he started preschool, I didn’t seem to mind it so much, as it was only a couple hours a day once or twice a week, and it was just the right amount of time for me to catch up on household chores.

Kindergarten was a different story. I

Back To School, Love It Or Hate It?

hated it. Actually, hate isn’t even a strong enough word!

The thought of my little man going off to school on a school bus and being away from me for half the day was just horrible.

I fretted over whether or not he would know where the bus was parked at the end of each day. I would fret about whether or not he would remember where to get off the bus to come home. And if I wasn’t worrying about that, I worried about whether other kids were being nice to him or if he was just sitting there feeling left out; as I knew he was not one to initiate play or conversation with other children because he was a shy little one.

One day, while waiting for him to get off the bus, one of my worst fears came true, he didn’t get off!! Well that was it for me!

I called my sister in a frantic state, yelling Jacob didn’t get off the bus!! She quickly came to my aid, and we were off following the bus to the next stop where we got him.

Yes, he had forgotten about his stop. But,

on the bright side, he had missed it because he was busy playing with his friends.

My second child was born just before the start of Grade 1, and while I admit she took some of the anxiety away from my son returning to school, it was still there; and it still is. My children are both grown and I only have my girl left to finish high school in a couple years, but I still dread it beyond belief.

On the flip side, some parents can’t wait for September to come and have their children head back to school.

Some of my friends absolutely look forward to having their children go off to school for many reasons. Some say it gives them the much needed down time, from all the hustle and bustle they have while the children are out of school. They need the mental break to keep going.

Some say they love the structure and routine that having children in school presents. They get up at a certain time and go

Dear Editor

I just want to say what a great job Barry Overn did on the fantastic new mural. I am just curious where the recognition of our EMS persons are?

There are many EMT’S, paramedics and first responders right here in our community

that rarely get recognition for the countless people they help and lives they save. If they don’t fit into the serve and protect category, then where do they fit?

They work very closely with the RCMP as well as the fire fighters on a daily basis, but seem to lack the recognition and honour

that they too deserve.

All too often they are written off as “Ambulance Drivers,” but they are so much more than that and I hope that one day more people will understand and appreciate just how much they do and how much of an important part of our community they

to bed at a certain time. Their meal times become more structured and preparing a school lunch is often easier then feeding their children at different times throughout the day during summer break.

I can see their point to some extent; though I am not a person who runs their life on routines and schedules, except for here at work where deadlines are, well a MUST! I am pretty much a fly by the seat of my pants kind of gal.

So, for all you parents who are like me, I feel your pain and wish you all the best!!

For you fortunate parents who are looking forward to the upcoming school year, I commend your strength and positivity. But most importantly with the start of this new school year, I ask everyone to stay vigilant in taking extra precautions around the school zones and even beyond the school zones as many of our children walk to and from school each day. Let’s keep the school year a safe and happy one for all.

PART 1 Rising at my regular morning time, I noticed I had to turn on the kitchen light to make my morning coffee, its getting darker each morning, but the up side is you get to watch another sunrise.

The low lying mist as the sun rises adds to the beauty of spectacular sunrise, this morning the mist joined by a high fog made the sun appear as a bright crimson red moon.

Nothing looks the same when looking at the low laying fields near my rural home, the eerie stillness and absolute quietness makes one feel like they are on a new strange distant planet.

In less than a week, that feeling should be magnified, as I will journey many miles on foot in total darkness, find a comfortable spot on the ground and sit waiting for the sunrise. With any luck, I will have that low rising mist and that eerie distant planet feeling, but to add to the adventure, huge aliens will appear from the mist like ghosts. I will be shaking like a leaf, not because Im am terrified of these apparitions materializing, but hopefully because these spirts are the huge Elk I seek.

and aggression that the hair will raise on the back of my neck; if I wasn’t shaking from the first sight of these majestic animals, my legs will now certainly turn to rubber.

The adventure described above is one I have re-lived on many different occasions during my Bowhunting adventures; on my quest to harvest a bull elk and fill my deepfreeze with quality tablefare.

Although, this has happened a few times over the years, and I had been prepared to vision exactly that, it never fails to turn me into a puddle, an outdoor adventure at extreme.

Just last year this exact scenario played out exactly like in my many dreams. Opening morning of bowhunting season, in the first minute of legal light, a 5x5 bull elk and his half dozen cows materialized. They appeared in dead silence until that hair raising bugle, just mere feet from my makeshift nature debris blind. A cow elk even peeked in her nose just mere inches from my own nose. If that doesn’t get your heart pumping and hair rising your most likely a ghost yourself, looking forward to this year’s adventure that starts September 1st.

August is the month that I daydream about all other big outdoor adventures, so much to do: gold panning, exploring, fishing, camping, the list goes on, however reality is I am still trying to even get packed.

Every year, I am very busy helping the gang out with archery and preparing for

bowhunting. This year is no exception; in fact it is more hectic than ever, as I don’t have much time to prepare for myself, so August does not see the outdoor adventures it should for myself.

A word on product review…on this very misty sunrise morning, I found a light jacket was almost a necessity, and with September almost here, mornings and evening can get downright frosty.

For several years now, I have been using and testing Merino wool base layer clothing or in laymen’s terms…long underwear.

Now some may say are you crazy…wool for underwear! Merino wool comes from the Merino sheep, a breed of sheep prized for its quality wool. Today Merinos are still regarded as having the finest and softest wool of any sheep.

When one thinks of wool underwear, one also thinks of the bear scratching its entire body on a rough spruce tree; however the complete opposite is true, merino wool is as soft and comfortable as fleece and has no itch. Several properties contribute to Merino’s popularity for outdoor clothing, compared to wool in general and to other types of fabric: Merino is excellent at regulating body temperature, especially when worn against the skin. The wool provides some warmth, without overheating the wearer. It draws moisture (sweat) away from the skin, a phenomenon known as wicking. The fabric

Through history we can see instances of transition that came on the world from so many c hanges that left things forever and irrevocably changed.

Way back in the world’s histor y, people who study those kinds of things tell us our country at one time was a jungle with huge dinosaurs, and then we had an ice age or two. Can you imagine these kinds of transition?

Then our natives evidently came across the Behring Straight and over time all the Continent was forever changed.

They had various climates but they got used to that and lived off the land for centuries.

T h e n c a m e u s w h i te g u ys , a n d another big transition soon came upon them in surprisingly rapid time.

tion and the foot soldiers had the transition of trying to defend against them.

They lost.

As the horses spread north, all the natives soon found they could hunt buffalo much more effectively then they could on foot, and then they in time became very proficient warriors and used horses to advantage against their enemies, both native and white.

Next transition was the introduction of firearms to replace the spear and bow.

The buffalo couldn’t keep up to that transition and soon the natives were starved into submission and instead of the freedom they once enjoyed, they had to get used to the transition of living on a reserve. Can you ever imagine the loss of the freedom and the whole absolute change of life?

Next thing you knew the railroad came to pass and another transition started.

With the railroad came settlers from all corners of the planet to fill the huge empty Country.

Anyway all that open buffalo pasture became sur veyed into farms and a place to raise crops and families.

You knew these first farmers had walking plows pulled by an oxen or a horse. Even a binder or a threshing machine was a modern luxury.

Steam tractors or later gasoline tractors to pull plows or thresh with were another transition that had to be contended with. I can remember people saying that tractors would never take the place of horses for anything, work or play. How about that?

I can remember prairie trails and roads that were impossible in wet weather and winter. Quite a transition to pavement wouldn’t you say?

I can still see the old telephone hanging on the wall and as we were on the end of the line, folks would come from way across the river to phone for a doctor and things of emergency. Yes, I can!!

Hard to grasp that I can phone from almost anywhere and talk to folks a world away. Quite a transition.

My dad liked doing things the old way and we were the last in our neighbourhood to forsake the old moldboard plow, binder and threshing machine. Don’t argue and get to work!! So we plowed

and stooked and pitched bundles when all around us the deep tillage cultivators and combines lessoned the labour and increased the production of crops to a tremendous degree. Yes, they really did.

Along with the better equipment and roads, wonder of wonders they decided that rural electric and even natural gas would make country life comparable to living in town. Yeah, well it still was country life, thank goodness for that!!

Well now the word is we have to contend with this global warming and terrorism to complicate life and we have to rely on solar and wind power and leave our oil in the ground. Now that would be a transition that should be interesting to watch.

All the country needs our oil discover y technology to heat our homes, power the planes, trains, vehicles, to carry us and our goods needed for life in this cold country.

As yet there is NO alternative that is economically viable. None that I’ve ever read about anyway.

So you know folks, don’t let the idea of being green give precedent over, COLD, HARD facts. We need oil to survive in this country for the foreseeable future.

If you can think of a really new alternative you could transition to being a millionaire!!

We awaken to face a new sales campaign ever y day. Adver tising is big business and ef fe c t i ve m ar ket in g can make the difference between boom and bust. Buy this product because...it’ll attract the opposite gender. Or happiness, fame, wealth. Invest in this product because, well, it’s better than that lame thing offered by our competitor.

One of my earliest jobs was comprised of writing ad copy and editing obituaries for radio. The obits were straightforward, as you might expect, but oh, to have saved some of those ad lines tailored to get the intended message across in 30 or 60 second spots so I could read them now. There were three of us working in the basement of the radio station. We’d visit our assigned retailers to discuss featured items or collect details about the latest sale, strategize, then shuffle back to our typewriters where we’d create copy

believe, we might also be half-convinced because the message is so well crafted and presented.

Marshall McLuhan is credited with first uttering the phrase “the medium is the message”, meaning that the form of a message determines the way that message is received. The better the crafting of the message, whether true or false, the more likely it is to succeed in convincing us to trust it. And once trust is established, the messenger can afford to take a few risks. Research, after all, takes time and work. Marketers count on Joe and Martha Average being too busy, too complacent, and (hopefully) a little too lazy to check out the veracity of the message. In that way, a message well presented---even if it treads the cliffs of farcical claims---will not only be embraced, but hailed as the best of the best, the ripest head cheese. The champion of champions.

It’s not so much that marketers and spin doctors perceive the general populace as hopelessly stupid, more that they

count on us not caring quite enough to dig a little deeper, to see if what they present as unquestionably the best option or true really is what it claims to be in the staged message.

Sometimes, it might not matter if we believe the message and act on it. Buy the soap in the green bottle instead of the white one. Drink the beer that promises you’ll be the life of the party. Colour your hair with the stuff featuring the pretty face on its box.

Where it matters is when the spin affects the greater things. Not how we look or what we drink or what we drive, but how we live and what we truly value.

It matters now that we listen carefully, beyond the meticulously crafted spin, to the messages we’re being asked to consider, to the voices asking for our trust. It definitely matters how we respond to the messages offered by each of the candidates vying to lead our beloved country into a viable future, hopefully one that accurately represents our collective Canadian-ness.

Vermilion Seniors’ Centre News

Gardens are being harvested and the majorit y of the local fairs have taken place, the grandchildren have visited and will soon be back in school, now it’s time to start thinking about what the seniors will do for the oncoming fall and winter.

The last E xecutive Meeting was held in June, an informal meeting took place in July to discuss the brick oven which was completed in time for the fair. The day of the Vermilion Fair, buns baked in the oven were sold to passer-bys. More discussions will take place as to how the book-

As consumers, we are not only relentlessly targeted, we are bombarded by billboards on our landscapes, messages extolling the virtues of products, lifestyles, and destinations at every turn. We are surrounded by seductive images and sounds promising unspoken encounters with titillating possibilities. The cacophony of it all sometimes numbs us into oblivion, but the constant presence of marketing campaigns in our daily lives also affects our perceptions of reality, sometimes in ways we may only be half aware. Af ter floor curling each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, coffee is available to the curlers but also to anyone just wanting to visit at 10:30 a.m.Coffee $1. A new initiative is being planned for the last Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Stitch & Chat, followed by Soup & Sandwich at 12:00 noon. This will give seniors an another opportunity to visit over lunch. There will be a $5 charge for this meal, the first being planned for September 30.

Let the Centre know if you are planning to attend.

C r i b D o u b l e s To u r n a m e n t s w i l l continue to be held on the second Thursday of each month, Septem ber 10th and Potluck will be the 3rd Wednesday on September 16. The charge for Crib Doubles will be $20 (this includes your meal) and Potluck will continue to charge $4 in addition to your favorite potluck dish. Potluck is a good time to try that new recipe!

The Happy Harmonizers will continue to meet each Tuesday. If you enjoy singing, this is an excellent opportunity to sing those favorite songs with others.

For those that enjoy playing cards

but do not necessarily want to participate in the tournaments, Bridge is held Mondays at 1:00 p.m. Cribbage the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m.

Some new initiatives being planned are trips, either one day and possibly 2-3 days depending on the interest.

There will be a charge for these trips but further discussion will need to take place to see what can be worked out to keep the costs to a minimum.

Tentative plans are being made to have an afternoon bingo on September 17. This is a new initiative and depending on the response will continue each month. All bingo players are welcome to come, they need not be members of the Senior Centre.

A Scrabble Tournament or perhaps j u s t a n a f te r n o o n s e t a s i d e o n c e a month or ever y second month is a another p os sibilit y. This would depend on interest as well.

There is a plan to have a Harvest Social & Pub in October with a DJ playing old-time music. Details not finalized.

As you read this article, if you are the magic age of 50 or older, for the price of $15 per year, you can join the Seniors Centre and par ticipate in all the activities. There is an additional minimal fee for various activities although we have some ver y dedicated seniors planning and carrying out these activities, we are always looking for new friends who can provide new ideas and assist in the current activities. The addition of the new initiatives is a further attempt to peek the interest of more seniors.

I recently returned from a buying trip for fall and Christmas.

The rise in many of the prices was apparent.

I asked one supplier why the cost of everything was so much higher and his reply was that they were paying on the global market for their supplies in American dollars.

So even if a Canadian company is manufacturing or purchasing in China, they are paying in American dollars.

Just to give you an idea of how bad our Canadian dollar is doing right now, it cost me $142 Canadian dollars to send a $100 American dollar money order. When this type of exchange rate factors into consumer goods the inflation rate will be much higher than the Bank of Canada’s projected 1.5 percent .

Oil prices which are expected to be low for at least another two and a half years will continue to weaken the Canadian dollar. So what does this mean to the average person? It means that Canada is slipping into recession, inflation is on the rise and you will have less disposable

income, which is never a good thing.

Your country needs you to buy Canadian, now, more than ever. Buying Canadian will support our dollar, and in turn reduce the cost of many goods, while strengthening our whole country and putting more money back in your pockets.

People talk all the time about supporting the environment by recycling, but support for recycling our Canadian dollar and supporting our Canadian economy is getting almost zero press and little attention.

Further Canadian dollar weakening has come in the recent quarter because Canada is purchasing more American goods and the United States have purchased less Canadian goods, including oil. It is easy to see that this is happening, when you look at our local communities and the number of businesses that are American such as: McDonalds, Home Depot, Winners, Home Sense, Walmart, Sears Canada, Arby’s and Tim Hortons.

People are often surprised that iconic businesses such as Tim Hortons and the Hudsons Bay Company are American owned, but they are. This is only a small list of the many American owned local businesses and it is not hard to

understand why large amounts of our hard earned Canadian cash is leaving Canada by truck loads daily and crossing the border as American profits.

This is not something that is totally out of our hands. We can choose to support our dollar and our country by choosing to spend Canadian. If you want to know what business are Canadian or American it is easy to Google ownership.

Do you know which gas stations, grocery stores and retail stores that are Canadian? Locally there are many 100 per/cent Canadian owned businesses.

You can choose to eat in Canadian owned restaurants and shop at Canadian owned stores.

You can take it to the next level and buy Canadian made goods, which will support our own manufacturing industry. Spread the word by talking with your friends about the importance of supporting Canadian business and products.

Of course we cannot be consumers of 100 per/cent Canadian goods, if we want to eat oranges, bananas and salad in the winter, there will always be certain foreign items or brands that we prefer to support globally. We can however increase the percentage of Canadian goods we

purchase. Spending locally owned has a multiplier effect. For example if you spent one hundred dollars and spent 90 per/ cent of it locally owned, that is like putting one thousand dollars into your own local economy. If one hundred dollars is spent at a corporate chains only fifteen dollars of it is invested locally. That is a big difference. That is the difference that you can make.

Unfortunately, there appears to be no regulation in place to prevent large American franchises from moving in and squeezing out Canadian businesses and devaluating our dollar. If we don’t support our own Canadian rooted businesses, soon we will have very few. Our current dollar valuation of 75 cents can push the cost of many products up by 20 - 30 per/cent.

Some analysts are suggesting that our dollar may drop as low as 55 cents. In true Canadian fashion, sorry to say our dollar is in a bit of a pickle without our oil exports.

On the other hand we can each choose to make a big difference and do our part to keep our true north, economically strong and free and to keep more cash in our pockets. Recycle Canadian cash, shop Canadian.

Kuk Sool Won Sees First Ever Seminar In Western Canada TM

Saturday 22nd August saw the first ever Kuk Sool Won Seminar to be held in Western Canada, hosted by Master Sung Jin Suh (9th Degree Black Belt). Seven students in total from Vermilion Kuk Sool Won visited Calgary West School including Thomas Nawrot, Declan Laurence, Blake Dutchak , Wyatt Richardson and Dawn King, as well as Instructors Morgan & Emma Freeman. “It is very exciting to have such an event take place” explains Morgan Freeman “especially as Master Sung Jin wants to make it an annual thing from now on”.

“Master Sung Jin is one of the most senior Masters in the world Kuk Sool Won Association and it is an honour and privilege to have him visit Alberta!” Explains Morgan. “He has competed at National and International Level in open competitions and won countless Gold medals over the years! Although he doesn’t compete anymore his technique, skill and knowledge is an inspiration!”

The Seminar was a chance for students to learn directly from Master Sung Jin and a chance for Master Sun Jin to help every student to improve. Master Sung Jin opened with a talk about his aims and thoughts for the future of Kuk Sool Won and

then went on to teach the group a weapons form, which was short staff form, usually only taught at 1st degree black belt level, then followed with sword sparring. “The sword sparring is something that you don’t do every day, I’ve been waiting 18 years to do that” smiles Morgan freeman “so for my students to get to learn it is very special, and to learn it from Master Sung Jin makes it even more special”.

After, some students decided to take part in a Prairie Mountain hike, a total of seven kilometers through Kananaskis Country, organised by the Calgary West School.

Students also got to build snowmen at the top thanks to the surprise snowfall Friday afternoon. Then a BBQ took place back at Master David Williams’s house. Kuk Sool Won Vermilion presented a gift to the two masters. “We decided to commission a local artist, Mellissa John, to paint a couple of Mountain sceneries depicting the Northern Lights as a thank you for hosting and teaching everyone on this special occasion”. Said Morgan Freeman (3rd Degree Black Belt).

The second day Master Sung Jin spent time going through forms and finished the day off with a set of sparing drills. Speaking with Wyatt after the event he had this

to say: “One of the greatest parts of this seminar was when Master Sung Jin taught us multiple forms, I feel it helped all of us gain an understanding of Kuk Sool and put some of my skills to the test. Also it was very exciting!” Declan ads “It inspired me to practice more, and makes me want to continue studying Kuk Sool”. Once the Seminar were over Master Sung Jin

presented all students with a certificate and a DVD from the 2014 master demo.

I think it’s safe to say everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event: “I thought it was an incredible experience getting to train with a master while I’m only a yellow belt, my favourite part was most definitely the sword sparring” explains Dawn. Now we just have to wait until next year!!

School Bus Travel Research conducted by Transport Canada shows that school bus travel is one of the safest methods of transportation. It is 16 times safer than travelling in a family car per passenger/kilometre of travel. Although school buses have an excellent safety record, mishaps can happen. These mishaps can include instances where children are injured while riding on the bus. It is more common however, for injuries to be sustained once outside the bus, including being hit by their own school bus or other vehicles.

Every driver must remember that when approaching a stopped school bus (on a non-divided road) that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing and side stop sign out, must stop before reaching the bus and must not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.

Here are some safety tips to share with children to ensure safe travel.

Getting to and on the school bus: 1. Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pick up time. Children should never run after the school bus to try to catch it. If you miss the bus, go back home or if you are at school, report to a teacher.

2. Stay on the sidewalk, well away

from the roadway and stay back until the bus has come to a full stop and the door opens.

3. If your child needs to cross the street, teach them to look to the left, then to the right, and to the left once more before crossing the street.

4. Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus.

Riding on the school bus: 5. Take a seat as quickly as possible, put belongings under the seat and stay seated.

6. Never stick anything out of the window, including arms or heads.

7. Save food for snack time at school or until you get home.

8. Wait until the school bus comes to a complete stop before getting off.

After riding on the school bus: 9. When getting off the bus: take two large steps away from bus. If you must walk in front of the bus, walk ahead at least three metres (10 giant steps).

10. The driver must be able to see you and will give a signal when it is safe to cross. Cross in a single file.

11. If a child drops something near or under the school bus, they should never attempt to retrieve it without the driver’s permission.

Travel by Car Parents and guardians must respect their child’s school safety measures for

dropping off and picking up their children at school. Every effort must be made to avoid collision and injury by refraining to create hazardous situations of traffic congestion and unsafe driving practices within the school zone. Respect posted speed limits, and designated drop-off and pick-up areas.

Travel by Bicycle To ride a bicycle to and from school, children must be mature enough (minimum 9 – 12 years old), and must have enough experience. The rider should be able to scan ahead and check behind without swerving.

To ensure safe cycling, young cyclists must: Wear a properly-fitted helmet, and have clothes that are suited for cycling (e.g. their pants tucked in).

Have their bikes fitted properly and in good working order. The bike should have a regular maintenance check-up and should have a bell. It is also a good idea to have a safety flag.

Know and obey all traffic rules, signs and signals. They must signal turns and stops. Ride in a straight line in the same direction as traffic and stop at every stop sign.

Be predictable to other road users by riding with the traffic usually on the right hand side of the roadway.

Never ride in the dark. If an older child

must ride in the dark, make sure that reflective clothing and night-accessories (e.g. reflectors and lights) are used.

Walking to school Many children use roadways to make their way to and from school. Parents and guardians must review road safety rules with their children and the importance of not accepting rides or any invitations from strangers. It is best to walk with a buddy and keep focused on getting straight home.

To keep safe on roads, children pedestrians must: Find a safe and direct route to school with the help of their parents. Hazards should be identified (train tracks, busy intersections, etc.) and a designated route with safety rules should be established.

Stay on sidewalks whenever possible.

If there is no sidewalk, use the left side of the road facing traffic.

Cross streets only at crosswalks and learn to look to the left, the right and then left again before proceeding, even at intersections with pedestrian walk signs.

Wait until traffic comes to a stop before crossing. Make sure drivers see you before you cross.

Prevention is the key to safety. With education and awareness, all children should be able to get safely to school and home again. Take the time to share these valuable rules and tips with your children.

Back To School Road Safety Tips

The RCMP would like to welcome back teachers and students for an exciting new school year. It’s that time of year that we would like to remind motorists that

school zones will soon be back in effect.

Your local RCMP members will be on the roads enforcing the rules of the road to ensure the local students are safe when walking to and from school. The RCMP would like to remind motorist to slow

down to 30 km/hr in those posted school and playground zones. Also a reminder to motorists that school buses will be back on the road, remember never to pass a school bus when yellow and red lights are flashing, these lights mean kids are not far away.

It is all our responsibility to ensure our community has a safe school year so stay vigilant in school areas whether you are a student crossing the roadway to your first class or you are or a motorist on your way to work.

You shouldn’t pass a school bus when the signal lights are flashing (as children are often crossing the road at that time), and drive slowly as a general precaution.

The following information is useful for school bus passengers and their parents.

Vermilion Insurance

Rules for getting on the bus safely: Be at the bus stop on time. Never run to or from the bus.

Wait at the designated stop in a safe place well back from the side of the road.

Remember the danger zone around the bus. The danger zone is anywhere close enough to touch the bus. The bus driver cannot see you when you are in the danger zone.

If you cross the street to get on the bus: when the bus comes, wait until it has come to a complete stop. The bus driver will make sure all the traffic stops. The stop arm will be out and the red lights will be flashing.

Watch the driver. When the driver knows it is safe, he or she will signal you to cross, but watch for traffic yourself. Walk, don’t run.

Hold the hand rail as you get on the bus.

Get Into A Healthy Routine For The School Year Ahead Submitted

(NC) New and demanding routines on those first few days back at school can be intimidating for both parents and kids alike.

To assist, the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) offers some tips to help your little ones start off the school year feeling strong: Play and exercise for better sleep – Research shows that exercising helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer.

This is especially true for kids. Unfortunately, studies show that only seven per cent of kids in Canada get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

Make sure your child gets enough sleep every night by encouraging physical activity during the day.

Go organic – Teaching our kids about the benefits of organic foods is almost as important as making sure that they eat breakfast every day. When you buy organic foods, you’re investing in your health and the health

of your family, and you’re supporting environmentally sustainable practices. These are all important messages we should be teaching our children.

Add a multivitamin to your mix – Mornings can be busy and hectic. Sometimes kids just don’t have time to eat a full, healthy breakfast to get all the nutrients they need.

Supplementing your kids’ diet with a multivitamin might be a good idea to ensure they are getting all the essential nutrients. There are multivitamins formulated for every age, ranging from kids to adults. Speak with your health care practitioner to determine which multivitamin is best for every member of your family.

Pack a brain boosting lunch – Packing the right food for lunch can also play a role in boosting your child’s brain power. Foods that contain poly-unsaturated fats are good for brain health and provide energy. If possible, try to slip avocados or pumpkin seeds into school lunches.

Add omega-3s for brain health – The long-chain omega-3 fats in fish oil have been shown to improve cognitive performance, including improved behaviour, memory, and reading. Getting the right amount of healthy fats during pregnancy and childhood has shown to have a number of benefits for children, including increased intelligence and visual acuity. Omega-3 supplements are available in different forms for children and adults.

Don’t forget about vitamin D – In September, the days get shorter and backto-school means more time indoors, both of which can lead to a decrease in vitamin D. Children and toddlers need vitamin D to absorb calcium and form strong teeth and bones. It has also been linked to increased immunity and disease prevention. Consider adding a vitamin D supplement formulated for children.

A Day In The Life Of An Antique Dealer

Debbie Green and her husband Peter Green have owned their antique store, Ye Old Fire Station Antique Shop in Kitscoty for the past seven years. They sell everything from antique, vintage, retro and even some new items. The Voice sat down with Debbie Green to see what makes an antique dealer tick.

What drew you into the antiques business?

The love of antiques; Peter’s mom was an antiques person, and we love antiques because of her. I think she always dreamed of having her own store.

What is it you like best about your business?

It’s fun. I love the hunt, and meeting people. You meet people from everywhere. We just had someone in our store from Sweden the other day. We meet people from all over the world. Every day is a different day.

Where do you “hunt” your store items down?

We go to auctions, sometimes as far away as Regina, Winnipeg or Crows Nest Pass. We usually go once or twice a year, on a long weekend. We also have a lady who comes from Burns Lake. She has an antique store there. She brings her 30 foot trailer and comes and buys stuff from us to take back to her store. She’s really good. We give her a good deal so she can resell.

What are you looking for when you go to an auction?

Usually there is something interesting, and it depends on the prices, but usually you pick something reasonably priced. I have paid a lot of money for stuff. When you get there you don’t really know what

you’re going to buy. The cut-off is usually about half of what the item is worth. But then you get caught up in the moment, like Storage Wars, and sometimes you pay way too for stuff just because you want it.

And you don’t want anyone else to have it?

(Laughs.) There are lots of times where it’s just not feasible to buy it. Auctions are becoming too expensive now.

How does that affect your business?

A lot of people are approaching us to sell their estates. You never know what is going to sell.

What are some of the most surprising things you have sold?

New stuff that may be included in an estate sale; people just stop in and they say, hey, I like this. We went to an auction sale that was a museum selling out. We got hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of different magnets, all different kinds; boxes full. I sold them right away. I thought, ‘Oh, I should have bought more of them.’ You never know what is going to sell.

What items have always been and remain bestsellers?

Crocks, and butter churns. You could do all kinds of things with them. Store dried and salted meats; store pickles and sauerkraut. They last forever. The sizes are also appealing. We used to have 10 gallons to half gallons. They came out of Lethbridge. They’re mostly used for decorative purposes now. Lunch kits are always good sellers and syrup pails – Roger’s Golden Syrup pails used to be used for lunch pails; we can’t keep wagon wheels in stock, galvanized wash tubs, and stained glass windows.

What isn’t selling now?

Furniture; you always still have to have it though, and oil lamps, they used to be so popular. But they’re not selling now.

It’s not that hard work. You just do a little bit every day; you just do a little dusting here and a little dusting there.

African Children’s Choir Melts Hearts

The African Children’s Choir melts the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles, beautiful voices and lively African songs and dances.

The program features well-loved children’s songs, traditional Spirituals and Gospel favorites. Concerts are free and open to all. A free-will offering is taken at the performance to support African Children’s Choir programs, such as educa-

tion, care and relief and development programs.

Music for Life (The parent organization for The African Children’s Choir) works in seven African countries such as, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. MFL has educated over 52,000 children and impacted the lives of over 100,000 people through its relief and development programs during its history.

MFL purpose is to help create new leadership for tomorrow’s Africa, by focusing

on education.

The African Children’s Choir has had the privilege to perform before the presidents, heads of state and most recently the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, for her diamond jubilee. The Choir has also had the honor of singing alongside artists such as Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, Michael W. Smith, and other inspirational performers!

Most recently, the African Children’s Choir recorded some tracks with Sarah

Hickman for a CD, “Love is a Journey.”

They will also have a small role in the upcoming Pan movie (Warner Bros.

Pictures) starring Hugh Jackman. Promotional support of this community concert is greatly appreciated.

The African Children’s Choir is a nonprofit humanitarian and relief and organization dedicated to helping Africa’s most vulnerable children today so they can help Africa tomorrow. No tickets, donations welcome.

As one of seven chaperones for the African Children’s Choir that is currently on tour in Canada, Emily Gronow knows the effect the children’s voices are having on the people who come to hear them.

“It’s amazing,” said Gronow. “At the end of the concert I stand at an information table and people are completely overwhelmed. The concert provides such a unique opportunity to see Africa in a positive light.”

The purpose of the tour is to raise awareness and funds in order to help lift children out of poverty by providing them with an education said Gronow.

Eighteen children, nine boys and nine girls, began an 11 month tour that started in February in North Carolina and will finish in November when the Choir will fly from Vancouver, back to the U.K. “The children who are in the Choir have very little hope of receiving an educa-

The African Children’s Choir was founded by Ray Barnett, and embarked on its first North American tour in 1984.

The proceeds from that tour, as well as every tour since, have gone toward building children’s homes in Africa as well as literacy schools.

St. Jerome’s School Construction St. Jerome’s Catholic School in Vermilion went under construction in May. “It is not due to finish until October 2016,� said St. Jerome’s Principal Allan Chase. “An entire modernization of the entire outside is in process. Demolition work being done to the outside includes removing old surfacing and putting new surfacing on,� said Chase. “We will be vacating one quarter of the school until the construction in that phase is finished.

Graffiti Art Organized By VIBE Local children turned out to learn more and update the graffiti wall with their spray paint cans in Vermilion’s Skate Park on August 26. “We encourage the children to use the wall,” said VIBE Coordinator Pat Calyniuk. “The wall belongs to them. We just don’t encourage anything inappropriate to be painted up there.” All materials, snacks and drinks were provided by VIBE. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Rebecca Irvine. “I love art and graffiti art is cool and different.”

Since my move into the “farming” community in 2010 - I have been taken aback by the amazing contributions of Farmwives, not only in their homes and in their families; but also in their communities. These women have been pillars in their communities for a very long time, and they continue to be today.

I have been so moved by this tireless devotion, in fact, that I’ve just completed writing a book, which profiles and celebrates them. My aim is to give them the recognition they deserve, and to honor their legacies to the larger patchwork of Canada’s Heritage.

Prior to the release of the full book - I am releasing brief excerpts from each interview. The full book contains 17 in-depth questions and answers about their life, photos, as well as, a recipe from each of the women. How long have you been married, and if you have children - how many do you have?

2012. We had 6 children four girls, Marilyn, Diane, Karen and Ronda and then two boys Kevin and Darwin. We have 14 grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, at present. I love them all but are all different in their own way. Most of all, they are healthy and enjoying life.”

2.What has the role of the farmwife meant to you?

“I loved being a farm wife and part of mixed farming operation and raising our children on the farm. I took pride in all I did and always did a good job of everything.

I had to be prepared for anything and at any time but no different than most farm women at that time.

I would keep my house, washing, gardening, food ready and always raised at least 100 chickens to butcher for meat and then I worked outside all year round.

I milked lots of cows, helped calve the cows out, work on the tractor cultivating, harrowing, baling, drove truck at sileage time, hauled the grain and of course we didn’t have a hoist on the truck so had to shovel it all off, operated the swather and

combine as well. Then as any farm wife who worked outside there was my work to do when I got back into the house. Not many men were taught how to do the women’s work. Ha Ha I was very lucky that I had my kids as they all learned to work where ever needed. When my kids were older I went to work at a hotel in Lloydminster. Farm life was too much for me by then.”

3. What is the best part, for you, in this life as a farm wife?

I think that raising my children on the farm and teaching my boys how to run the implements, work with the cattle, and my girls to keep a clean house and be able to cook a meal. I was proud of all my kids and we had fun working together.”

Broadway Students Return From New York

Reporter

Vermilion dancers Breanna Maughan and Erica Snelgrove recently returned from their Broadway scholarships and performance in New York.

The girls were in rehearsals for six days out of the seven days they were there.

On the seventh day they performed on the Aladdin Broadway stage in the New Amsterdam Theater.

“It was way bigger than any theater I’d ever been in before,” said Snelgrove. “It was a really cool experience.

“We got to do a private tour of the Empire State building with the other Broadway students. There were other

dancers in our groups from all over the world including Panama and Australia.

“The highlight of the trip was definitely the Broadway shows. They were amazing,” added Snelgrove.

“They were incredible to watch.

The day before the show it was amazing to see people lined up all the way down the street to watch the girls,” said Erica’s mother Rhona Fadden. “They didn’t get to do as much sightseeing as the parents because they were in rehearsals dancing for eight hours a day.”

“She was exhausted at the end of each day,” said Fadden.

They learned to dance a six minute performance which normally they would

have a year to learn.

“New York is such a huge city, there were people everywhere,” said Snelgrove. “One of our choreographers was Judine Sommerville from the original set of Hairspray. She was pretty funky. She really pulled the Broadway performance

for rehearsals, makeup and the photo shoot we did in Times Square.”

“I would love to go back for touring the city and the arts. I don’t think I’m going to make a career out of dancing but it will definitely always be a part of my life,” said Maughan.

“Everyone always talks about the Broadway shows and say they are good, but nothing can explain how fantastic they really are!” said Breanna Maughan.

The theatres were three tier and held 3000 people.

“We had to get up at 5 a.m. most days

“Hairspray choreographer Judine Sommerville was fantastic; I’ve had a lot of choreographers at dance camps and over the years but she was really awesome!” said Maughan. “Within the first day she knew all of our names, we all struggled but she kept pushing us through like it was nothing. She had confidence in us the whole way through and in the end it paid off.”

The President Becomes The Student

The president of the Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association (VUCA), Jason Stelmaschuk, will be able to speak firsthand about the benefits of Ukrainian dance when the president becomes the student this upcoming season.

“If I can do it, anybody can do it,” said Stelmaschuk. “I have no dancing skills; just ask my wife.”

Stelmaschuk will be in the adult dance group for ages 18 and up.

“We have three year-old to 50-year old members dancing at all different skill levels; from beginners to advanced,” said Stelmaschuk.

“We really want to make people aware of our club. The biggest misconception is that you need to be Ukrainian to join.

About half of our club is comprised of other nationalities. Anyone and everyone is welcome,” added Stelmaschuk.

Returning dance instructor, Kelsey Olijnyk will be teaching the three to 13 year-old age group. She has over 20 years of experience and training and is also a certified Zumba and group fitness instructor.

“She is just amazing. She has a connection with the younger kids that is unbelievable.”

New to the club this year is Vincent Rees who will be instructing the 18 plus age group.

“My words can’t do his experience any justice.”

Rees joined the Ukrainian Shumka dancers in 1992, became the artistic director at the Shumka School of Dance from 1999-2004, studied dance in the Ukraine, obtained a Masters at the U of A in Ukrainian Folklore and has adjudicated dance competitions.

“He essentially wrote the book on training. To even have him for one season

is awesome. He has a real passion for sharing Ukrainian culture. We’re very excited – we really have all-star instructors.”

Stelmaschuk said there are some surprising benefits to joining VUCA‘s Samotsvit Dancers.

“The older kids see some amazing benefits when it comes to playing other sports, like football and basketball. It enhances their motor skills and sharpens their reflexes. It gives them a real edge in sports.”

Stelmaschuk added that there are community benefits to joining the club as well. “ We p er for m for seni or s an d at hospitals. Seniors enjoy the colourful costumes and dancing. We also have workshop sessions like making perogies and painting pysankas. We will be hosting Malanka again (Ukrainian New Years), hosting a Dance Festival and performing our year-end concert on April 30. Giving back to the community makes it all worthwhile.”

Registration for this year’s classes begins on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for the three to 13 year old group, and Thursday, Sept. 10 for the adult group.

“The first two classes are for registration and placement. If you join and you do not like it within the first two weeks, a full refund will be given,” said Stelmaschuk.

“We are a family-oriented club. We keep our costs low and it’s very affordable for everyone.”

History Of The Grizzly Bear And Buffalo Coulee

The Grizzly Bear and Buffalo Coulees, located between Vermilion and Wainwright, is a land rich in North American history.

Anthony Henday walked through this land in 1754. He was led by a Cree Indian and his band into the Battle River valley. Henday had come out west working for the Hudson’s Bay Company, to trade with and follow the natives to find out where they were getting the fur.

While Henday passed through the Coulees he re c orded in his diar y; “The River was full of large stones and weeds; small hazel, birch and poplar trees grow on the sides of it. Here and there on the slopes Buffalo fed in little groups. High above the great basin of the valley, hawks and eagles soared on the air currents. The valley is magnificent and there is plenty for the Cree to eat.”

Author of Memories of Life in the Grizzly Bear Coulee, Franklin Wolters grew up in the Coulee and he recalls often finding artifacts from the natives as a boy and remembers stories passed on from the native way of life.

“There are trails along those hillsides that were worn for years from buffalo travelling there and I’ve picked up buffalo heads in those springs,” said Wolters.

“At one time it would take days for a herd of buffalo to go by. The buffalo were the Indian’s source of survival.

“They ate the meat, they used the skin and fur for clothing, and they used the bones for weapons. They were the Indian’s supermarket,” said Wolters.

The herd was originally millions strong. The coming of the white man changed everything.

“There was an American General in the mid-1800s that said the only way we are going to get the Indians subjugated is if we kill off all the buffalo,” said Wolters. “And they systematically

hunted them and killed them all.”

The white man decimated the herds, from millions to thousands to hundreds until the numbers dwindled and with them went the native Indian way of life.

“The grizzly bears that lived once in the Coulee were so big they could kill a buffalo,” tells Wolters. “They were called plains grizzlies far bigger than the bears in the Rockies.”

History records that Henday and two hunters were hunting in the unnamed coulee, when they got attacked by a wounded plains grizzly bear and one of the men died, thus giving name to the deep valley that runs to the Battle River.

The Grizzly Bear Creek flows into the “Chacutenah” River just east of the former ski resort at Mistahiya. “The Cree word Mistahiya means big bear,” said Mistahiya facility owner Cliff Brown.

“They made the journey on foot; they had no horses in those days. Henday was a young guy looking for adventure and the natives were fascinated with the tools he gave them.”

Henday was one of the first white men to explore western Canada and he travelled further than anyone before him. “He was like a god to them,” said Wolters.

Place Of Rescue Founder And Dance Tour Coming To Vermilion

For the first time in Vermilion, dancers from a Place of Rescue in Cambodia will participate in an evening of traditional dance at Parkview Alliance Church, to raise awareness about the orphanage and AIDS Centre that was established by Marie Ens in 2003.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Ens, a retired Canadian overseas worker,

returned to Cambodia at the age of 65 to establish the centre and has since become a Cambodian citizen.

“Awareness is key,” said Florence Tovell, the director of women/care and overseas work with Parkview Alliance.

Tovell said she has firsthand knowledge of the work that Ens does at Place of Rescue.

Place of Rescue presently cares for orphans including those children of AIDS

patients, destitute elderly women, and people in total.

“I hear from people all the time that adult AIDS patients.

Get to Know Cindi Cindi Plant grew up in small town Saskatchewan. As a teenager, she aspired to be a fashion designer, drawing ensembles daily and sewing her own creations.

That career path opened further when she decided to study Interior Design at the University of Manitoba. Design school was stimulating and rewarding but the key thing to emerge from it was that a passion for teaching was born. Seeing a myriad of design solutions to the same posted design problem was a pivotal experience. All that creativity!!

After working in the private design sector for a while, Cindi landed a job teaching fulltime at Lakeland College in the Interior Design Technology program. This marked the beginning of a three decade long career in the field of design education. While there, Cindi served on many faculty committees, led the department as Program Head for 6 years, and took advantage of Professional Development opportunities to attend many conferences and workshops all over Canada and the United States.

These days, retired from fulltime teaching, Cindi’s ‘encore’ career is pursuing fiber art, batik painting and dyeing fabric. Having begun quilting 20 some years ago, she is

now venturing out into the art quilt world – bringing her full circle in the merging of textiles, art and sewing.

Vermilion Art Club Joan Blamire, a member of the local art club, will be presenting “Fearless Art” at the Elks Hall from 10 a.m. until 4p.m. on the Saturday. She will set up for as many as 20 participants, and will provide two large canvasses for each participant. The paintings should take two to three hours minimum. Some participants will want to stay all day while others may want to drop in for a shorter time. Joan will have all the paint and necessary tools for you but please bring your painting clothes or apron because things could get messy!

Get to Know Joan Working as a corporate paralegal, Joan finds that art is the perfect outlet for stress and a perfect avenue for creativity. Approximately 20 years ago she took several stained glass courses with Germaine Hill, soaking up all she could learn from her.

Since becoming a member of the Vermilion Community Art Club, she has further developed her creative vision through courses at Red Deer College and Calgary School of Art. Her focus now is on acrylic and mixed media abstract art. She is presently experimenting with a type of art called “Fearless Painting” where instead of brushes one uses rollers, lots of water, gels and pastes, and a table or the floor becomes the easel. She started teaching the “Fearless Method” last year, with a two year old being her youngest participant and a 75 year old her oldest. She loves teaching and says she gets as much from the participants as they do from the class.

Art in the Park Good Life is partnering with Allied Arts and the ABC Days committee to present this fun competition at Vermilion Heritage Park by the museum. Artists will start off there, get their directions for the day and then come back in the afternoon for presentation of their artwork and the competition results. Watch for these artists working in various areas of the town during the day.

Artists Gather For Art In The Park

Art in the Park attracted many local art enthusiasts and talented painters last Tuesday, August 25. Young and old gathered down by the water’s edge and learned more about how to paint on canvas in the Vermilion Provincial Park.

Art instructors on hand to give advice were Sandra Miller and Monica To. “This is our third year,” said VIBE Coach Laryssa Speck. “There is lots of talent here today and we got a beautiful

day for it too. We have kids here from Mannville, VES, St. Jerome’s, home schooled children, J.R. Robson school and we have some adults here today as well.”

Home schooled Casey Zayac was drawn to the event because of her passion for art and decided to attend after she saw a flyer.

“I have taken art classes in Vermilion a few times,” said Zayac. “I will be taking Art 10 this year and I am really hoping to get into The Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) in Calgary.” Aspiring artist Casey Zayac paints the Vermilion River at Art in the Park. Photos Marie Conboy

The Vermilion Allied Arts Council First Season Performers

The Allied Arts Council kicks off the performing arts season with The Carolines, a classic country trio, on October 3 at 8:00 p.m. in the Alumni Hall Theatre at Lakeland College.

The popular six-piece classic country band whose repertoire ranges from Patsy Cline to Buck Owens to the Dixie Chicks, as well as Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, and the McGuire Sisters, has been given top reviews for their powerful voices, solid vocalharmonies, and

for the close connection they forge with their audience. Chloe Albert, Lesley Pelletier and Katie Perman have been singing together since their college days and, over ten years, they have taken classic country music to a fresh new dimension with their breathtaking harmonies, and sheer vocal talent. Ms. Albert was nominated for a Juno Award this year. The Carolines have been rocking the music scene in Edmonton as solo artists and as a trio, and their EP “The Carolines” was sold out last year.
