Vermilion RCMP Submitted

On the morning of July 23, 2015 Vermilion RCMP were called to the Vermilion Fair Grounds responding to a complaint of an assault. Upon arrival RCMP members located the victim who had sustained minor facial injuries. The RCMP completed a search of the Fair Grounds but were unable to locate the suspect. Further investigation revealed that the suspect and two other males, driving a motorhome, were involved in theft of fuel from local area busi-

Later that afternoon the RCMP received information that the suspect had returned to the area. Vermilion RCMP Members responded and began a search. A passerby notified a RCMP member as to the suspects location. The suspect male attempted to evade police by first trying to hide near a wooded area and then by laying down in a field. The suspect ran from the police and was pursued by members on foot and a member operating an ATV. The male was apprehended and arrested without further incident.

The suspect male was identified as William RHODE. RHODE has been charged with Assault, Resisting Arrest, Theft under $5000, Possession of Prop-

erty Obtained by Crime and Fail to Comply.

In the early morning hours of July 24, 2015 Vermilion RCMP members were patrolling near Becky Scott Trail and 50 avenue in Vermilion when they observed the motorhome from the theft of fuel complainants. A vehicle stop was initiated.

Stolen property was located on the driver linking him to a theft of gas out of Mannville.

A subsequent search of the vehicle located several stolen items. Two were arrested and charged with Theft, Possession of Stolen Property, as well as drug offences.

Every week I put a lot of thought into each editorial. I think about the headlines in the news. I think about social issues and many other issues which I could write about and do the research on to find information that pertains to each topic.

While considering this week’s editorial, I was browsing through my news feed on Facebook and some very disturbing videos came before my eyes. I read the titles and thought to myself “REALLY?” can this honestly be happening this often in the world? I made myself, with much hesitation, click on the play button, and yes, the videos were just as disturbing as I imagined them to be.

The videos were cases of family dogs and even some stray dogs being shot with seemingly no reason or true threat by police

I know many will say the police have the right to disable/destroy any animal that shows extreme aggression or threat toward them, and I totally agree with that!! However, I don’t agree with any animal being destroyed unnecessarily, and in all the videos I watched ,it was done unnecessarily.

A perfect example of such was two police officers in Missouri who had their dashcam running when they approached a dog that was restrained on a lead. The dog, which was a female bulldog, was not acting with any aggression. During the video she actually sat and lay down very calmly watching the officers move about. The officers then attempted to lasso her, which in turn made her try to flee from them; a pretty normal reaction, I think. Once lassoed with the loop and pole she was wiggling and jumping trying to get away like any normal scared animal would do. The police officer pulled his weapon and shot the dog in the head

killing it.

Another such case here in Canada, a dog named Duke, was shot and killed by police during an arrest of a man with warrants. The video shows the dog lying on the ground wagging its tail and you can hear the RCMP dog handler instructing another officer to get a shot gun and put the dog down. In the RCMP’s defense it was reported that the dog had tried to attack their police dog, but is such deadly force necessary?

An animal who feels threatened by another animal will instinctively react to protect itself. You can clearly see in the video the police dog is not harmed as it is still lunging and barking while Duke (the dog) is lying down. These are just a couple cases to show a point. If you search the internet you will find endless cases.

My questions are very simple: First, do all police officers have additional training in how to handle situations with dogs? Like how to address unplanned situations with dogs, or

We all know the love of a dog and the lengths some will go to protect their humans. There has to be a way that otherwise unaggressive dogs can be immobilized without such extreme actions. Maybe a Taser gun that could be used on dogs, or shoot to wound and immobilize instead of shoot to kill.

Any thoughts would be welcomed, as I know if my dog died in this type of scenario I would be completely destroyed!

Celebrate Kitscoty 3rd Mini Gospel Jamboree

The artists spoke of healing from illness, addictions and finding comfort amidst tragedy.

Guest artists began at 10:30 a.m. with “ touch of grace” from paradise valley. Other artists that shared their talents throughout the day were” revive gospel singers” from sherwood park, “claire schira” from spiritwood, “sharlie sjoquist” from kitscoty, “franklin wolters” from vermilion, “stephanie koch” from legal, “yvonne st germaine” from saskatoon, and the final wrap up artists were the amundruds from lloydminster.

It was a time when those attending Yvonne St. Germaine. could join in with song, visit, buy CDs Submitted

from the artists, and enjoy the lunch and supper concessions prepared by the Kitscoty Community Church women.

To sum it up, people left with friend-

Man the lifeboats!!! It may have be my imagination but it looked like all the wildlife was moving or floating by two by two. The heavens opened up and decided we would get all the moisture we missed the last several months.

It wasn’t really moisture, more like flood waters. This past weekend gave us near four inches of rain on Friday and Saturday, my driveway looked like a river, too much - too late for many of our farming neighbours.

One of my friends and a regular member of our archery club, is one of those farming neighbours. He is only across the highway, or a couple country miles away, and always misses the rain.

But this past weekend he received nearly three inches of water, more than all the rain he got since spring put together. So, needless to say it was a little damp; not much help for the crops already turning and already stunted or burnt. However, it was good for livestock and our wildlife.

This morning felt like a fall sunrise, cool misty and still, and on my morning trek I passed an older dug out water hole near our home. A momma whitetail deer and her twin fawns, still donning their bright white spots, stood knee deep in the full water hole enjoying a fresh morning drink.

The twins a sign of a milder past winterand were a pleasant sight.

Maybe many of us purposely ignore the signs; but if one looks around in nature, there are many signs of autumn in the making. For myself that’s just fine, as it’s my favourite and golden time of the year.

With all the rain this past weekend, it was a great time to spend indoors; if you’re into that sort of thing. With less than two weeks until my bowhunting adventures start on September 1, I am way behind on getting prepared.

I don’t know if it was insight, but I bought a new set of raingear, like a camouflaged set of fleece outerwear. Well what better time to test it out. So I woke Miss Pickles, my pup, and headed outdoors. This could be a little adventure.

Miss Pickles, part duck Im sure, loves the rain. With no plan, we simply just walked in the rain, I did decide to pick

up all the fake antlers off the lawn of our outdoor 3D animal archery range.

It seems my trained antler shed finding dog thinks it’s her duty to remove all the antlers off the lifelike animal targets and stash them in a pile; something I can’t get mad at her for as I trained her to find antler sheds.

I was still dry, so we walked by the

garden; or more like a pond garden now, and I thought maybe I would pull a couple weeds... yah what was I thinking? There’s something about a wet dog that doubles their energy. So, I am standing there watching a wet blur burning doughnuts in and out of the potatoes and corn, mud and water roaster tailing out behind her, and I’m still not sure if she slipped or intentionally dove into the muck several times.

This chaos had to quit, so I finally got her attention and made our way to the house leaving an unmistakable mud trail behind us. Well this is not going as expected, so much for an outdoor adventure today. Bone dry, from the rain gear passing the downpour test, I decided to go to the house and get a coffee. Then back to the shop and maybe just relax for a bit and watch

some outdoor TV in my big massage EZ-boy chair.

After grabbing, a coffee I walked towards the shop…oh no the door was open. My door opening dog was in the shop!! (something she learned on her own) hopefully she was on her couch!.

I walked into the shop to see in horror a big clump of “mud Pickle” curled up right in my chair snoring loudly. I didn’t want to wake it because I had taken off my raingear and it may want to play.

So it was back to bailing out the shop and packing for the big adventure of the year. Although I was indoors my mind was elsewhere; watching a misty sunrise with a bull elk materializing from the mist like a ghost.

When The Smoke Clears One may feel rich with a hand full of gold, but is far richer embracing life watching with the signs of autumn as a golden sunrise shimmers on autumn’s golden leafs and our precious outdoors.

We had to decide how we would celebrate our 56th wedding anniversary.

We have been farming for 50 years and have always enjoyed watching livestock shows, so we decided to attend the pen of 3 heifer show and help Minburn celebrate their 50th anniversary.

We were not disappointed; we were treated with great hospitality, great livestock and a delicious anniversary supper.

Raghavan substituted the parmigiano with pecorino cheese, one of the products the Cheesiry makes.

The five-course meal that Raghavan coined, the 5 Stages of Pecorino, featured the cheese in every course.

“It really gets people aware of our cheese in this area,” said Lawrence.

The Cheesiry gave four free farm tours on Sunday, Aug, 23 that were also part of Alberta Farm Days. “ We g et c o m m e nt s fro m p e o p le who come through. They are amazed at how much work it takes to make cheese,” added Lawrence.

The tours provided a glimpse into the cheesemaking process, as well as the different stages of aging the cheese.

Other activities on the agenda included Mutton Bustin (where children c oul d tr y to r i d e a shee p), a sheep milking demonstration, and pasture tours.

Lawrence said Alberta Farm Days provides a wonderful opportunity for people to see, “what food is, where it comes from, and how it gets on their plate.”

When I was ver y young, the effects of the “Great Depression” were still being felt when the “Second World War” erupted.

The poverty the depression caused was really compounded by the start of the war!! Couple that with some dry years and the state farming was at in those times made living quite a challenge to say the least.

As yet, Alberta was still a, “Have Not,” province, the oil boom hadn’t arrived yet and farming was still a get by kind of situation, subsistence in other words.

Any kind of modern equipment was very hard to come by and most farmers tried to manage with old horse drawn, obsolete machinery that was well past its prime. Hard work and lots of fixing and repairing as I remember. If new parts weren’t available the blacksmith shop and ingenuity had to make do. If the battery played out you parked on a slope with car

or tractor or used a hand crank!! The idea was you had to improvise and make do!!

I remember stops on the way to town with our Model A Ford, to fix worn out tires and patching the tube and pumping up the tire with a hand pump. Hard to imagine that now, hey what?

For a few years after the war it was hard to find much better conditions until the late forties/early fifties when the oil boom started, and new equipment became available.

People still benefited from the saving, fixing ways that brought the good times the fifties afforded.

I think that the wheels started to wobble a bit on things as people begin to forget the hard times and thought that those hard times would never manifest again.

I guess it’s like a frog sitting in cold water with heat slowly applied. They say he’ll sit there until the water boils and never jump?

I wonder if that’s how bad times can come on us!! But as the farms got larger and further apart, larger machinery began to appear, so fewer farmers could still manage to handle the larger farms.

The progress of technology was so rapid that the dealers were hard pressed to keep up with the demand. At the same time the old binders, threshing machines, plows and one way tillers became ornaments in fence corners. You knew thing were easier because holiday trailers, boats, snow machines and the like told of maybe a little cash left over from bare necessities.

Once the country made the hi-line power and phone lines standard fare, along came the bills to go with the convenience. All weather roads and better vehicles made country living more liveable, but still the farms got larger and the farmsteads farther and farther apart. Sooo, the price of land began to get a bit out of hand, but it was possible to borrow lots of money and the debt for farmers became similar to that of a small country. Must be a caution to manage the stress in a year like we have now. All the same now, the towns are full of lots of consumer goods, and the machine and vehicle dealers have their lots full to the corners with gleaming examples of all that money can buy.

Let’s talk about a couple of guys visiting over coffee in the local watering hole.

“Well yeah, you know these new ones have better seats and air conditioning, my old one has some teeth missing on the pickup and I want the GPS deal. You know they are giving great prices and I might as well have the best!!”

Must be a sign of the times, damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead you think? The whole world seems headed for a wall at full speed and here we are with one of our main sources of income coming under pressure and we’re tearing down things and spending money that maybe can’t be paid back!

I hate to sound like a pessimist but old codgers like me can remember the folks that lived in those early depression times and it IS scary. Should be an interesting next few years coming, you think?

The wait is almost over. On Wednesday, Aug. 26, Lakeland College will officially open the doors to its new Energy Centre at the Lloydminster campus.

The Solace Of Open Skies

We owned a holiday trailer once. It was one of the smallest models manufactured by Boler, more a place to sleep than a home on wheels. We have many memories of the old beige and maroon, most of them comprised of material suitable for a Larson cartoon. In the beginning, a small family arrives at a campsite after sundown and weary from travel.

Kids, glad to finally be released from the prison of the vehicle, watch as their parents alternate in attempts to back up their newly acquired mini trailer into the narrow, dark space allotted them. Finding themselves quite inept at the task, they finally unhook the trailer and heave-push it into place, laughing madly but so grateful for having made the choice of purchasing such a lightweight unit.

Except for the dim light of a few candles and our reading lamps, our imaginations provided the only illumination after sunset. We slumbered with the rising moon and awakened with the first light at sunrise. On the day that it finally rained, we huddled inside our tiny space, reading and telling stories. Accusing each other of using up too much oxygen and fogging up the windows. We made some good memories, I think.

The Boler is long gone, sold for a reasonable price to a family with children whose feet don’t stick out the windows when they climb into their bunk beds.

When last I spoke with them, it sounded as though they were enjoying it almost as much as we did.

We talk sometimes about getting a travel trailer but that’s been going on for years and neither of us is genuinely interested. This summer, we assembled what

The litany of laws enacted with Royal Assent in Canada since 9/11 is enough to make any stu d ent of law sweat with apprehension if given the assignment to write a paper summarizing these laws: The Anti-Terrorism Act, Bill C-36 passed Dec. 2004; Public Safety Act, May 2004; An Act to Amend the Criminal Code (suicide bombings became a terrorist act), 2011; Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act, 2013; Nuclear Terrorism Act, Nov 2013; Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act, 2014—giving government the right to revoke dual citizenship of those involved

in terrorist activities; Protecting Canadians from Online Crime Act, March 2015; the second Anti-Terrorism Act, Bill C-51, enacted June 2015; and lastly, Protection of Canada from Terrorists Act, C-44, not enacted yet.

All the above gives CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) more powers than ever imagined. However, with all those extra powers, e.g. spying on emails, collecting names for no-fly lists, being more involved with border security, etc. they could only collect and analyze information.

The information then is passed onto the proper authorities who can arrest the alleged offender and run them through our court system as outlined by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms—the high-

est law in our nation.

Every enacted law has passed the test of being measured against this law which is our Supreme Law protected by our Constitution. Someone was asleep at the switch when Bill C-51 was given Assent.

Bill C-51 jumps the boundaries of our Charter giving CSIS the right to approach a judge in a secret hearing to ask for a warrant. Terrorism promotion is addressed in Bill C-51 to the point where journalists are not sure what will happen to their freedom of speech and press. Is writing about or reporting on terrorist activity a crime? The law is ambiguous at best in explaining this.

The Canadian Journalists for Free Expression and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association are challenging this law. And, rightly

I gazed up into the black midnight skies at the stars a million miles away and felt the rhythm of my own heartbeat, temporarily allowing the complex concerns of the world to fade to an almost inaudible whisper.

Our Charter does not allow an alleged offender to be charged “in secret”. Article 11 outlines specifically the procedure for criminal and penal matters. And if writing about or reporting terrorist activity is “promoting” what happens to Article 2 of the Charter which guarantees “freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication”?

Unfortunately, the Harper government has enacted legislation that should have been stopped cold at the Royal Assent stage. Who was asleep at the switch? With the litany of laws already floating about to protect Canadians, we do not need one that usurps our Charter rights.

I love small dogs and I am still missing my little dog Coco, that got ran over last year.

I wa s c o n s t a nt l y checking out Kijiji and all the SPCA’s near and far. Our local SPCA seems to only have about 4 lovely, but large dogs.

I did find lots of cute rescue chihuahua’s in the Calgary area, but after filling out countless forms, I found that I never qualified because we have a farm cat and dog that are not neutered.

I was looking for a small house dog. My search lead me to a rescue dog in Edmonton, however, when I called, I was told that there were six people ahead of me that also wanted the dog. After briefly chatting with Sarah the rescuer, she told me to check the

Since my move into the “farming” community in 2010 - I have been taken aback by the amazing contributions of Farmwives, not only in their homes and in their families; but also in their communities. These women have been pillars in their communities for a very long time, and they continue to be today.

I have been so moved by this tireless devotion, in fact, that I’ve just completed writing a book, which profiles and celebrates them. My aim is to give them the recognition they deserve, and to honor their legacies to the larger patchwork of Canada’s Heritage.

Prior to the release of the full book - I am releasing brief excerpts from each interview. The full book contains 17 in-depth questions and answers about their life, photos, as well as, a recipe from each of the women. How long have you been married, and if you have children - how many do you have?

I married my husband Don in October, 1978. Shortly after settling into the farm life, we started a family. In 1980, our first daughter Amanda was born. In 1981, Dean was born, Last but not least, our youngest daughter Lindsey was born in 1983. Today, we have the greatest pleasure of all, as we get to carry on the tradition, of being grandparents. This truly is the best gift your children can share with you. We currently have 3 grandsons, and 2 granddaughters, and always hoping for

facebook page of a specific animal shelter, to see if there was a dog there I would like, and then to let her know which one.

Sarah is from Ft. McMurray and she and another lady will on occasion drive quite far to rescue as many dogs as they can from a high kill shelter.

I found the facebook page, only to see a mixture of about 84 dogs and cats that would be euthanized at 5 a.m. the next day.

Many of them were gorgeous little Chihuahuas. One in particular pulled at my heart strings. But here is the problem, I am in Alberta and this little dog is way too many miles away.

I posted, “I will take her, but I am from Alberta, can anyone help me?” I called Sarah, told her about the dog and then she posted “Can anyone pull this dog and get it on a plane to Alberta, all expenses paid.”

I waited, and waited and then I called Sarah. She said “I am working on it.” The

next day the dog had disappeared from the page. Sarah had not been able to make any connections, so that meant that the dog had been adopted or euthanized, but I did not know which. I thought about the hard fact that for so many shelter dogs, death row is their lot in life.

The next day I got a Facebook message from a lady named Anna, she had pulled the dog the night before it was E-listed.

She asked me if I was still interested. Well I certainly was. I began looking for those special people that assist in animal rescues.

As I am a newbie to the rescue world, I am amazed at what I find. There are many people that donate their time and skills to rescue animals from all across Canada and high kill shelters. There are pilots that fly dogs, drivers that truck dogs, and foster homes that care for dogs until they find their forever home. There are airline employees that use their employee discount and their

2. What has the role of the farmwife meant to you?

“My role on the farm, was to pretty much tackle any chore that needed to be done at the time, whether it was milking cows, calving, seeding or taking the crop off. There is always lots of work to be done, and an extra set of hands is very helpful. Don and I both worked off the farm, when we first got married. I worked in Lloydminster, about 25 miles away, and Don, worked in the oil patch. My parents gave us a milk cow, for a Wedding gift, so I had to milk the cow before going to work.

This lasted for a couple of years, until we started having a family, and I couldn’t fit under the cow anymore.

3. Do you have any advice for women marrying a farmer today?

My advice to any young woman that is marrying a farmer today, would be to enjoy every day you get to spend outside while working side by side with your husband, whether you are feeding cows, fencing, planting garden, or harvesting.

Yes, we get to help lots, and learn lots without much training, and sometimes feel unappreciated, but at the end of the day we are our own boss. Our children get to feel the dirt between their toes, learn how to work, learn about life, and usually learn how to drive long before they are old enough. Enjoy working with your husband, as a partner, that will give you satisfaction, and the sense of ownership to what you are doing and what you have built together. The farm is such a wonderful place to raise your family.

I truly believe it is very important to respect our mother in laws challenges and remember, we are marrying their babies, and I always say no one will love your child like a parent does. We have to be patient and earn our spot on the

ladder, one rung at a time.

After many Facebook messages and phone calls, I had found a very special air angel, Noella Joy that would be glad to fly to where this little dog was. She stayed overnight with Anna, and then flew the dog to Calgary.

Amazingly, the universe put together, a group of 5 ladies, all strangers, to rescue one little dog, who is now safely with me.

Please pray for this special air angel, who just found out she has been C-listed with stage four breast cancer.

Driving Memories Of Old Trapper

Panter came close to being the World Champion in 1971 in the World Finals in Amarillo, Texas while driving the ’70 Cuda.

To this day he says he’s not too happy about coming in second, especially since the difference between first and second was only about a bumper length.

The first place car, a ’69 Mustang with a 4-speed transmission, was driven by Texan Ken McLellan who clinched first place with a time of 11.56 seconds, while Panter’s finishing time was 11.75 seconds.

“The guy that beat me in the final was no stranger by any means, he was a good guy.

We were like one big family.”

As for the Old Trapper cars, Panter said they are all still very close by.

“Jim sold the ’67 to a young guy that hung around the shop for about 15 years – Ken Edwards from Edmonton. He never drove it, Old Trapper’s best time on the ¼ mile except for maybe in the summer. Then he sold National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) it to Jim Baraniuk of Drayton Valley in 2003.”

Panter said Baraniuk passed away about circuit was at a meet at Seattle’s ArlingReporter “Back then you’d see 20,000 people on a Sunday afternoon at Speedway Park just north of Edmonton,” said Dick Panter, one of Old Trapper’s drivers.

“That first run down that track in Edmonton was quite a rush – a lot of stuff happens in ten seconds.”

In the annals of drag racing history, the 1967 GTX Plymouth Super Stock, owned by Islay born and raised Jim Ronaghan is recognized as a true classic. It was the only Canadian car to qualify for the 1968 Super Stock World Finals in Tulsa Oklahoma.

“Jim was the brains. He was one of the first to put a Caterpillar engine in a Kenworth truck. He was very smart and very mechanically inclined. He definitely knew how to make an engine.”

The 1970 Barracuda, that was sold by Jim Ronaghan just a year after he got it, was purchased by Garry Wolosinka of Viking who repainted it, renamed it Tuff-A-Nuff and raced it for 12 years.

“It only has 1900 miles on it.” said Panter.

“There aren’t too many of the originals left.”

And the ’68 Dart, Panter’s favourite car of the three, and the one that he drove his fastest time in?

“Well that’s just over in Wainwright,” said Panter who added that there have been a lot of rumours about where these cars have ended up.

“Sometimes you hear one of them is in Saskatchewan, or somewhere else. Harold Didluck has the ’68 Dart in his garage in WainDick Panter set a track record in his favourite Old Trapper, the ’68 Dart, at the Winternationals in Los wright. I don’t think it has been out of there in Angeles in 1979.

“It’s a lot of money. You need to be dedicated or forget about. I forgot about it.”

Panter still heads out to watch drag racing from time to time.

“There are smaller areas using airport strips for racing. I was in Vegreville last Sunday and Provost recently. They close down the airport for the day to race. The asphalt is really old and there’s no traction for anything with any amount of horsepower, but it is okay for low horsepower.

“The Edmonton Speedway - now that was an up-to-date facility. It had two oval tracks and a road course – a lot of big name drivers came up here to race. It closed down in the late 70’s due to lack of interest...it’s different now than it was back in those days...we had some good times.”

“We’d go to about three or four of the big races in the States every year; we always went to the World Finals and the Winternationals. We both drove – it started with the ’67.”

There were two other cars known as Old Trapper – the second one, a 1970 Chrysler Barracuda, also owned by Jim Ronaghan, and a third one owned by Branham that was a ’68 Dart. Panter said Chrysler only built 64 of the Darts and that they were basically built just for racing.

“I drove it in ’79 and ’80 at the Winternationals and set track records a couple of times and won the Super Stock A Class both years.”

Panter said the fastest he ever drove was back in ’81 in the ’68 Dart in Seattle with a time of 9 3/4 seconds at 140 mph.

“The first time you drive at that speed it’s happening so fast. The more you do it, the slower it seems to be.”

This year will mark the 4 t h Walk of Hope in Vermilion aimed at raising awareness and funds in the fight against ovarian cancer. Co-chair, Cindy Usenik, is a cancer survivor herself, and said she wanted to do something to give back, when she started Co-chairing the Walk of Hope in 2011.

“Lyla Fee was a friend of mine. She had ovarian cancer and last year’s walk was dedicated to her,” said Usenik.

Lyla’s daughter, Danette Belanger, has taken up the cause and become the media spokesperson for the event.

Belanger speaks poignantly about her mother’s diagnosis, her treatment over the course of 12 years, through several rounds of surgeries, radiation

and chemotherapy, and how in 2014 her mother became one of the 1,750 lives that ovarian cancer claims each year.

“Last year I remember offering Cindy (Usenik) my support. I was thinking I’d like to become more involved. I remember my mom wanted to do the walk in Edmonton in 2008. The family met there and we all walked together. We are lucky to have a walk in Vermilion,” added Belanger. “ T h er e ar e a l ot of p e o p l e w h o thought so much about Lyla. She had a big heart and was a wonderful person,” said Usenik.

The walk attracts around 100 people and raises approximately $20,000 each year, added Usenik. “ Ver milio n is su c h a su p p or t ive community.

“We are very happy with the number of walkers we get every year, but it’s not just about the money - we want to raise awareness. Ovarian cancer is a cancer that just whispers. The signs get brushed off, and there is no detection test.”

Belanger said this was true of her mother’s symptoms.

“She just didn’t feel well. The disease is usually caught in its late stages and 55 per cent of women will die within five years of diagnosis,” added Belanger.

“Each participant will get a balloon to release this year. This walk meant a lot to my mom. My d ad, my hus band and children will all be there this year.

know we’re involved to a greater extent now.”

This year’s Walk of Hope will run, rain or shine, on Sunday, September 13 and registration will begin at 10 a.m. at the C.N. Station in Vermilion Provincial Park. This will be followed by a ribboncutting at 11 a.m. and will wrap-up at noon with special presentations.

Options for the walk include 2.5 km, 5 km and 10 km distances. Participants can register online as individuals or in teams at www.ovariancancerwalkofhope.ca or in person the morning of the walk.

New Mural Salutes Those That Serve And Protect

Muralist Barry Overn was out working on his latest mural in Vermilion last week.

The new mural is located along Highway 41 and is very eye catching as people drive through Vermilion.

Overn has been painting murals professionally for the last 28 years.

“I always start with the eyes, I feel the rest of the portrait follows from there,” said

Overn.

Overn uses a method by projecting the image onto the wall at night then traces the outline of the image and then airbrushes the paints on the image.

“It’s so impactful, nobody can miss it,” said Pullyblank. “The mural portraits of the fireman and the veteran are generic,” explained Pullyblank. “The RCMP mural portrait is of retired Pincher Creek RCMP Sgt. Roxane Baalim.”

It is a credit to the amazing talent of the muralist Barry Overn for capturing the importance of these individuals and the service they provide,” added Pullyblank.

Former Vermilionite Wins Bronze

“Nothing has ever stopped her,” said Darlene Brunner of her daughter Jolan Wong who, along with her teammates, won a bronze medal at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto on Aug. 14.

Jolan Wong is the Captain of the Women’s Sitting Volleyball team that easily defeated Cuba in the finals, 25-8, 25-7 and 25-7, to secure the bronze medal.

“It didn’t hit me until that night. Because the game was not a huge challenge, I didn’t feel like I earned it,” said Wong.

“After some team bonding I realized we’re going to the big show!”

The bronze medal win guaranteed the team a spot in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Wong has always been active in sports and a cancer diagnosis at the age of 12 followed by the amputation of her right leg above the knee one year later didn’t

slow her down. With the help of a prosthetic her mother said she still played sports in school and that she runs, cycles and is presently studying to be a personal trainer.

Wong credits her high school coach at J.R. Robson, Gord McNeill for getting her involved in the sport of sitting volleyball.

“He contacted Volleyball Canada,” said Wong. “That was when it was still pretty new.” After participating in some events Wong said she wasn’t convinced it was the sport for her.

“I still had my heart set on hockey.”

The sport of sitting volleyball differs from standing volleyball in a few ways, most notably; the players are sitting on the court rather than standing on it.

“A lot of people don’t realize we don’t play in wheelchairs,” said Wong who added that when it comes to handling the ball, one buttock must remain touching the floor. The courts are also smaller and the nets are lower for both women’s and men’s teams.

Wong is one of the original members of the team, dating back to 2008. She said the team didn’t qualify for the games in 2012, and that by 2013 only two players were left. The most recent player joined the team in March.

With only ten players on the team, (12 can be on the roster) Wong said they still managed to achieve their goals, by winning bronze and advancing to the Paralympics.

Wong plans on continuing to train hard for the next year. She presently resides in Ontario and she and one of her teammates get together twice a week to work out and organize a game once a week.

“Our team is from all over Canada.

We get together once a month to practice, usually in Edmonton. The team is sponsored by the City of Edmonton,” said Wong.

Children attended the Vermilion Public Library on Tuesday, August 18 for the Makedo Workshop. Children from ages of 6 upwards came together to create, play and imagine with cardboard and other recycled materials.

“The children were successful in bringing out creativity in their projects and

mixed very well with each other,” said Program Coordinator of the Vermilion Public Library, Michele Scott.

“It’s the first year we’ve had these children and we plan to have more of these workshops like this in the future.”

A Day In The Life Of A Funeral Director

Jim Storch and Can d i c e A n d er so n t a l ke d o p e n l y l a s t week about their careers and gave insight into a profession that is seldom spoken about and is hidden behind closed doors most of the time. The job involves tasks that entail the embalming and burial of the dead, as well as the planning and arrangement of the funeral ceremony.

Jim and Candice both work at the Lakeland funeral home in Vermilion. Anderson has been working in the industry for five years, while Storch has recently finished his two year training and practical for a Funeral Service Diploma out of Mount Royal University.

Can anybody do this job?

“No. This job is for a particular person.

If you’ve got a weak stomach, it’s really not for you. If you have low patience then it’s not for you. If you’re someone that is more inclined to being in the back room doing the preparations you have to be able to tolerate the biological factors that accompany that,” said Anderson.

“You have to be able to tolerate any cause of death that can come up essentially. For the funeral directing side you need to be very empathetic, you need to have dignity and respect for the people that you work with and you need to be respectful and know how to personalize as well.

“If you can’t stand somebody crying it’s not a profession for you. We provide a sense of guidance and sometimes counseling to people also, so if you have a low tolerance for people it’s really not something you should be in.

“The thing is about this job is it’s not a job – it’s a lifestyle choice. We eat, live

and breathe this job and we sleep it too because you never know when in the middle of the night, you can be called out to do it.” said Anderson.

“There are times when you can be out at a family event or a birthday party and you’re about to have cake and you get the call and you have to leave because you are required here.

“Confidentiality is also something that is paramount in this service. Anything that happens inside these doors is never released. So you need to be the kind of person that can deal with that.”

Due to the fact that this is such a demanding job and you have to be on call 24/7 and at times give up your personal time, do you ever second guess the job?

“It doesn’t ever make me second guess the job, if anything it’s made me secondguess where I should be working for a funeral home choice. The place you work is all the about the team,” explained Anderson. “I have had experiences in the past where I didn’t like where I was at in the funeral industry but since I’ve moved to Vermilion that’s never been a question in my mind.

“When I first started out in this job it really helped me being able to confide in my co-workers and their strength gave me strength, and also having a strong family to back me up as well has been paramount, especially going through schooling this past year,” added Storch.

Some people get spooked around dead bodies because they are not used to seeing them all the time. In your job it is reality; do you become immune to death?

“Once you do this job you recognize that ‘spookiness’ isn’t a reality. The body is a holding shelf for who you are as person and once that person is gone you’re left with a body and there is nothing spooky

about a body. But they were still a person and they are still a person, our key thing is we operate with respect. The deceased is the most helpless person that there is, they can’t speak up for themselves.

“We see it not in a spooky light but more as honoring this individual.

“I treat the deceased as though they are living; I talk with them just in case there is something going on. It’s the last place they would want to be when they pass….they don’t want to stick around with their body. They want to be with their family,” said Anderson.

“For me, it’s a service that I can do to assist this individual and their family so that they can have a meaningful goodbye,” said Storch.

“It’s a task that I don’t take lightly. It

takes a toll on me and I want to do the best I can for these people through the funeral part and when I’m doing an embalming.”

Do you ever get emotionally upset if it’s someone you know or if it is a very emotionally upsetting event?

“Behind closed doors, you sure the heck do!” said Anderson, “This job is a job of balance. When people are coming in you need to be strong for them and you have to be delicate with their emotions.

I wouldn’t wish grief on anybody.

Viewing is something I highly recommend, it gives the family the sense of closure which helps the family to move through the stages of grief better.”

“Yes! I would absolutely want to do it, because you would want to make sure that it was done right,” said Anderson.

“Yes,” answered Storch.

When did you realize you wanted to do this job? Is it a calling?

“I lost my best friend at the age of 25 years old and two months later I was the first person that found an individual who committed suicide with a rifle,” said Anderson. “That was initially what took me to this path. I went into this job because I wanted

to help.”

“It had been on my mind for a while”, said Storch Do you think differently about life and death now because this is your job?

“Absolutely, we see every worst case scenario and the worst case scenario is being here. Working in this industry also makes you more thankful for what you have every single day. You love life more because you know it’s fragile and you know it can just be gone in the snap of the fingers

and you’ve got to make every moment worth it,” added Anderson.

“I have a good grounding in my faith and with that and my family. I can go back to my family farm. I can be out cutting hay and take in a big breath of fresh air and think this makes it all worthwhile, also being able to serve my community makes it all worthwhile,” said Storch.

“There is no better feeling than when you get a thank you from a family,” added Anderson.

Curbside Re-Use Event

“Vermilionites see the big picture when it comes to recycling,” said environmental committee member and Town of Vermilion councillor Rob Pulyk. “Recycling is working in Vermilion and the Curbside Re-use event is another tool the community can participate in.”

Pulyk said the idea of the Curbside Re-use Event came about through the environmental committee.

“The premise of recycling is to reuse, recycle and reduce. The community has done a great job of recycling, with community and individual garage sales, social media, and stores like the Community Closet. Now we would like to encourage them to reuse.”

On Saturday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. people are being encouraged to place free items on their lawns for people to take away and reuse. If there are any leftover items they must be taken back into the home.

“The town used to have a similar program where they would drive around and pick up the leftover items,” said Pulyk. “This re-use

event is different, if you bring it out; you’re expected to bring it back in.”

The timing of the event is set to coincide with the arrival of students attending College.

“College students will go into residence and there may be items left that they don’t want, so they can put those out. Or there may be items other people put out that they will need.”

Pulyk said they are anticipating a good response from the community and that even businesses are supporting the initiative.

The longer you can extend the life-span of an item, the better. Reusing an item multiple times keeps things out of the landfill said Pulyk.

“The landfill is the bad guy in this whole scenario. We’re doing a lot. We all have a good respect for the environment.”

Lakeland Mall has offered space in the east end of their parking lot (by the Brick). “We are very thankful ,” said Pulyk.

Thirty stalls will be available for students or people who live in apartments or condos that do not have lawns. They can “pack and park” their cars, on a first come first serve basis. People can then peruse and pick for free. Members of the environment committee will be on site to assist.

Pulyk added it’s an idea that has worked in other communities and in other provinces.

“Whatever you’ve got you think people can make use of, put it out.”

Have Girl Guides Will Travel!

Europe, Ottawa, Calgary and Jasper… just some of the amazing adventures experienced, or being planned for members of Vermilion Girl Guides. Add in there Telus World of Science sleepovers, trips to the Edmonton Zoo, camp outs and canoe days…and you might start to get an idea of how active our group is.

Consider joining in so you/ your daughter won’t miss out on anything life altering and/ or amazing.

During the summer of 2016, we have six girls and two leaders heading to Europe for just over two weeks. We will be touring Edinburgh, Bath, York (Stonehenge) & London. The girls have been working hard fundraising & selling cookies. We will be cleaning the grounds again

during the Vermilion Fair this year, and collecting the bottles (so please remember to leave them there for the girls). An amazing opportunity all in all!

Next up on our travel schedule, will be a week in Ottawa over Canada Day 2017. That’s going to be the 150 th birthday of Canada, what a celebration that will be! Touring our capital city, museums, boat tours, RCMP stables – and so much more. We are actually still looking for girls interested in going on this trip so consider registering so your daughter can have this great life experience. Financial commitment is minimal, and fundraising opportunities are many!

Also coming up in the 2015-16 year, many girls will be heading to Jasper to experience our majestic mountains. Snow shoeing & an ice walk – how very exciting. There is a fall camp with a chocolate

theme in the works, along with outdoor cooking, canoeing, winter camping, cooking nights and a minion themed spring camp.

This past year in Vermilion Girl Guides, we once again saw an increase in numbers for girl and adult members. Girls from age 5 – 18 are having a great experience from September to May, while learning about health, community, environment, life skills, world issues…the list is endless. Thanks to a great group of leaders, our girls are being led on a wonderful path that will help them become amazing female citizens bent on changing the world for the better.
