Festival Goers Brave The Rain At Mistahiya

The rain poured down on this year’s outdoor music festival in Mistahiya but it didn’t dampen the spirits or the quality of musical talent at Come By the Hills.

Spectators watched on from under their umbrellas in lawn chairs and soaked up the relaxed outdoor atmosphere.

The valley echoed with the sound of lyrical artists. Mistahiya is a former downhill/cross country ski resort built along the Battle River Valley just northeast of Wainwright, Alberta. “The Cree word Mistahiya means big bear,” explained facility owner Cliff Brown.

“This festival started small and it has just settled right in. It’s an awesome festival, it is intimate. There is a variety and a range of music here that you don’t see sometimes in a big city. It’s really nice to see people coming out to support live music,” said festival president Phyllis Elmer.

ewan.

“It’s a family event. Kids love the freedom of it. My husband who was one of the original organizers of the festival passed away in 2012. Last year I came out for the festival and I had not felt so good in a long time,” said Elmer. “There is so much great musical talent nearby, it’s wonderful.”

lost on the way to the festival but that he enjoyed the scenic drive. After finishing a month long tour of western Canada, Ian said was really happy to be invited to the Come By The Hills festival.

“A friend of mine played this festival a few years ago and they said it was a very scenic and chilled out festival,” said Ian. Singer/songwriter Eileen Laverty trav-

“I was delighted to get a call from Phyllis. She rang me up a year ago and asked if I would be interested in coming out. It’s my first time here. I love the unique atmosphere and it’s a really beautiful setting as well. So far everyone I have met has been warm and friendly. It’s a lovely environment to play in,” said Laverty.

Parade’s Cancellation Didn’t Dampen Fair Spirits

The steady downpour of rain resulted in the cancellation of the parade at the Mannville Fair on Saturday, Aug. 15 as well as the outdoor bounce castle event, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

The pancake breakfast hosted by the Mannville Historical Society moved from the outdoor gazebo on Main St. to the Elks Hall this year.

The Mannville Fire and Rescue crew proceeded with their outdoor demonstration despite the rain. Firechief Dez

Shubert gave a brief explanation of the tools used in a typical rescue situation involving a vehicle and then asked the crowd, “So you want to see us take apart a car?”

The demonstration lasted about an hour and by the end, the car’s doors, roof and windshields had been completely dismantled and demolished.

The indoor events at the Rec Centre went ahead as planned. Everything from carnival games, tattoos, face painting, a magic show, musical entertainment, a petting zoo, vendors and a large bench show were available to choose from.

The Baking Robots hosted the popular Cupcake Walk this year, and lucky winners got to walk away with a colourful cupcake that was made by the Robots.

New this year to the fair were two psychic mediums that provided readings for fair goers. Intuitive guide Melissa Joy Baird and psychic medium Trisia Clara had a steady stream of interested parties looking to connect with the other side.

The pet rescue/foster group Coca’s Promise from the Lloydminster area had kittens and dogs that were available for adoption at the fair. Owner Nikki Headon brought her own dog Liberty a rescued

pit bull to the fair to show people, “that pit bulls aren’t so scary.”

“She’s a great dog,” said Headon. “I named her Liberty (Libby) because she was rescued on Canada Day.” Chicken John’s Petting Zoo was also a favourite among children and adults.

John Posthuma brought a veritable farm along with him that included everything from goats, chickens, bunnies, pigs and a donkey. Posthuma said he loves coming to the fair and has been a regular for over 15 years.

The fair wrapped up with a supper and live music.

Innisfree And District Celebrates 35th Annual Agricultural Fair

The weather was hot and the skies were sunny for the 35 th Innisfree and D istri c t Agri c ultural Fair that took place on Wednesday, Aug, 12.

There were a few minor changes to this year’s events, but overall the Fair’s line-up stayed true to its traditional format.

The parade began at 11 a.m. this year. Visitor from Northwest Kansas, Betsy Holste, who was visiting second cousins here, said she was impressed with the parade and loved the interactive sounds on the Innisfree Fish and Wildlife Association’s float. “ Wasn’t that classy? I wanted to video it, but I’ll just have to tell everybody how it sounded when I get back home.”

One of the organizers, Dana Fowler said the change in time and location of the derby was to take advantage of the built-in audience following the parade.

Although there weren’t any of ficial registrants for the soap box derby this year, people from the crowd took part in the event.

“It’s hit and miss in the summer,” said Fowler. “We do it for the people who are here. It’s a nice, fun, family event.”

parade and fair updates for the past 30 years in his vintage green and white truck, complete with roof speakers, drove around the Village announcing the change in venue for the soap box derby.

“I do it to keep things going,” he said. “There are people sitting around wondering what’s going on.”

Following the parade and derby, people headed over to the Innisfree Recreation Park for more activities.

The always popular dunk tank called “Dunk a Politician” featured MLA Dr. Richard Starke and County of Minburn Reeve Eric Anderson who participated in a friendly rivalry during the event.

ML A Dr. Richard Starke said he was looking forward to getting dunked due to the hot weather. Anderson was happy to oblige, and pushed the big red button that sent Starke plummeting into the tank for the first, but definitely not the last time, that day.

Free ice - cream was handed out at the library and free kids activities including a bounce house and slide, face painting, and sno-cones were at the park, as well as a Horse Show.

New this year was a Hole in One event and a hot dog fundraiser hosted

by Ron’s Auto and Ag., the Cutting Edge Family Hair Care and Hiway 16 News. The proceeds will go toward local organizations within the Innisfree area.

The Rec Centre also held its traditional Bench Show which opened at noon, followed by the Fair supper.

May 16, 1957 – August 19, 2014 A boy was born, a son to parents he respected and honored, a brother to his sister who he grew up with, a husband who looked after his bride in every way possible standing like a solid rock creating a solid foundation for a family. A father sharing his wisdom as he supported and guided his family towards success and independence, and encouraging them to move forward in their lives and future.

Ken was a grandfather who sang songs, told stories, sitting and watching in awe with unconditional love. As a veterinarian and clinic owner in Vermilion, Ken shared his knowledge through hard work and dedication portraying an integrity that gained the respect from his community and co-workers with little wavering from the path ahead. As a vet his humble personality showed great loyalty and work ethics proving himself repeatedly giving 100 percent every day.

Our family would like to thank everyone who supported us at this very difficult time.

The overflowing of flowers, food and support comforted us. It helped our family keep our strength up which will always be remembered. Friends and families came to sit and comfort our family which we will always remember the warmth that touched our hearts and souls with outstretched arms. Dr. Stewart Hunter and his team of homecare were amazing working around the clock. Our family is very grateful for your dedication and strength you showed supporting us through the last few weeks. Lakeland funeral home assisted us to keep moving forward.

Are We Seeing Through Rose Coloured Glasses

A couple weeks ago I had family here to visit, in particular my brother, sister-inlaw and their 16 year old daughter who is 6 months older than my daughter.

Because my brother and I don’t always see eye to eye on many things, we can sometimes have some pretty in-depth discussions and this time was no different.

One night we were doing our usual banter back and forth and the topic of drugs came up, it was the one topic we could agree on. We both despise how drugs are becoming more and more accessible to our children and how disturbing this fact really is.

We can sit in our safety bubble and declare that our child will never get involved in the drug scene because we have brought them up right, but is that really the case? I don’t believe any parent ever really thinks their child will be out partying, smoking pot or doing hard core

drugs. We all hope that we have raised them to be smarter than that.

During our discussion a voice in the room chimed in and said “The party drug now is cocaine.” The voice of one our children informing us what the new party drug is. I will admit I was a little shocked, but at least it was good to know that our children were comfortable enough with us to even join in the discussion on that topic.

I remember when my brother and I were teenagers, drugs were just as prevalent as they are now, the only difference was the drugs of choice back then were marijuana, hashish and if they really wanted a good high they looked for acid and magic mushrooms. Very seldom, if ever, did you hear of or see one of your friends doing hard core drugs. That was a Hollywood thing for the rich and famous.

This day and age marijuana is still quite popular, but from what I hear and read teenagers aren’t just smoking a bit of pot, they are dabbling in and getting addicted to the hard core drugs like cocaine, meth, heroin and prescription drugs.

Now this is where it gets kind of tricky

when discussing the different types of drugs because the drug dealers have put these new age names to them. Anyone who isn’t involved in the drug scene wouldn’t even begin to recognize them.

For example Cocaine can be named snow, blow, c dust and crack. Ecstasy can be called Scooby snacks or sweeties, imagine that a cartoon snack is now a name for a drug. Heroin also known as hill dust, mud or poppy and prescription drugs have their own unique set of names.

One of the worse drugs on the street right now is Fentanyl it’s called green beans or green jellies and is killing teenagers and adults at an alarming rate.

Last week it came to my attention that the prescription drug Fentanyl is becoming high on the list of drugs used in the teenage population and I find that very disturbing.

So far in the first six months of 2015 there has been 147 deaths in Alberta caused by the synthetic opiate that is now being manufactured underground and is 100 times more potent then morphine.

Alberta’s Fentanyl crisis is far worse than

ever before and has prompted warnings from health officials and law enforcement agencies.

So what are we going to do about it?

What can be done to help prevent one of our children from dying from drug use?

What are we as parents supposed to do to keep our children from even considering trying one of these drugs? The answers are hard to come by.

The burden of keeping our children safe is not just on our local police stations, I know many will say it is their responsibility to keep this stuff off the streets and yes while I agree with that we as parents have to play a role in it as well. We need to stop seeing through rose coloured glasses and see realty. Anyone of our children can be lured into the world of drugs at any given moment, but I do believe we have to be proactive and do our best to educate, educate and continue educating our children on the dangerous world of drug abuse. If necessary we need to scare the dodo out of them.

We need to know these killer drugs are in every town, no town is protected from it, talk to your children, it may save a life.

Forum Focuses On Working With Landowners To Preserve Watersheds

A Watershed Educational Forum, presented by the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance, was held in the Alumni Hall Theatre at Lakeland College on August 12.

The forum raised important questions around wetland restoration, defining functioning wetlands and management implications of wetland and riparian areas. The forum heard from a wide variety of speakers including environment researchers, landowners/ranchers, wetland and riparian specialists and water quality specialists.

Riparian specialist Kerri O’ Shaughnessy from Cow and Fish gave a presentation on the life and times of the Vermilion River watershed which looked at the history of watershed land in the area.

O’Shaughnessy noted that early explorers who passed through the Vermil-

ion watershed commented that the land was full of beavers and otters.

When Anthony Henday passed through south east of Vermilion in 1754, “he commented that this was level land with few woods and plenty of good water,” said O’Shaughnessy. “You might not think of the Vermilion River as being an important place for fish, but the stories of early settlers tell a different tale. Fish were important to the early settlers; they were numerous and were caught throughout the length of the river. Changes in water quantity and quality have limited the fish population that we now have,” said O’Shaughnessy.

Barrister Judy Stewart gave a presentation on the municipal policies, laws and implementation strategies involved in the protection, conservation and restoration of wetlands and riparian areas in Alberta.

Government Act section 60 (1) states, “a municipality has the direction, control and management of the rivers, streams, watercourses, lakes and other natural bodies of water within the municipality, including the air space above and the ground below.”

Vermilion rancher Sean McGrath gave a presentation about a producer’s perspective on riparian improvement.

“There needs to be more incentive for land owners, farmers and ranchers to preserve every wetland,” said McGrath.

“The reality is there is just not enough money. There is not enough funding out there for me not to wreck it. We need to call the shots on how we progress. It is about facilitating Mother Nature,” added McGrath.

“I think on the eve of planning the watershed restoration it’s good to hear what other producers are doing. We can take practices

that are already in place and operate with other producers that want to do the same,” said Chairman of the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance Pat Gordeyko.

“Understanding each other is a critical step towards moving forward fixing what is broken in riparian areas and maintaining what is healthy,” said Gordeyko.

“The basis of our program going forward is to engage with all the landowners who have riparian areas and watersheds that need restoration, there is a whole list of best management practices and funding available,” said Gordeyko.

Fast for ward into another heat wave… first I apologise about last week’s column, I was in the bush at the cabin for deadline and didn’t make it back in time, but I am back and full of stories…or something ha ha!

What a beautiful morning it was at 6:00 this morning. After sunrise we had a big sky…a big clear blue sky.

It was calm and still nice and cool, the perfect temperature for this cool blooded Canadian.

First, just past my driveway, I had to stop and admire the big cow moose standing in the middle of the road.

She was a lone second year calf most likely, still huge and looked bigger standing on the road.

After we stared at each other for several minutes she sauntered off into a slough to cool down for the day. I was taking my time driving down the rural road, admiring all the wildlife and the perfect morning.

Multiple hawks and even a great horned owl rose from the still trees. A little whitetail fawn, still in spots, broke in front of me and raced me a half mile down the road. I’m sure Momma is gonna have something to say about chasing cars.

I am quite proud to say I didn’t get sucked into the whole Beanie B a b y f r e n z y when they first arrived on the scene 20 years ago.

My daughters were too young to be interested in collecting them and I wasn’t falling for their cuteness one iota. Our Beanie Baby repertoire over the years consisted of one soccer b e a r, t w o m o n k e y s a n d a g o r i l l a named Kicks, Sweetheart, Bongo, and Congo, respectively.

However, recently I experienced some down time and decided to fill it with some thrift store shopping. I noticed there were Beanie Babies e v e r y w h e r e ! Pe o p l e w e r e h e a r t lessly abandoning them in droves.

Unfor tunately, due to the excessive number of Beanies sold and collected over the years, they were no longer considered to be valuable. There were lions and tigers and bears... and iguanas and flamingos and armadillos...oh my!

This got me thinking - I could buy these abandoned Beanies for a fraction of their original cost, and hang

One of the first signs of fall, dread for some, but for myself and others a hint of the outdoor adventures to come; bowhunting season now less than 20 sleeps away.

Not trying to raise any alarms, but look at some of the leaves on trees, look at some of the crops also changing colour fast. Crows and magpies flo c king up our summer world are preparing for changes.

Not to worry thou, as I mentioned before, summer actually goes well into September. Society has programed us with children and families that fall begins on the first day of school…so not so!

S u m m e r i n S e p te m b e r i s m u c h easier to take temperature wise. Heat waves are not my favourite thing about mid-summer for sure, and yup we are only in the latter half of mid-summer.

On my days of f, which went way too quickly, I got lots done, and even made it out to the cabin. The first couple days, I cut grass and did other yard chores. Cutting grass is a drag after about 12 hours.

I had to extend our outdoor archery range about a football field now that all the bowhunters have woken up from the summer chill-axing. I cut that patch from a part of the field that gets baled for hay.

It’s usually cut by then but recent r a i n s s l owe d d ow n t h e n e i g h b o ur that usually utilizes the hay field, so I cropped it down to shorter than most golf greens, which was brutal.

As I go to set it up…there is an identical one already there…hmmm…well its obviously mine, so I exchanged it for one with fresh batteries as the batteries were surely dead in the old one.

As I jumped into the truck I heard a faint click…so I picked up the trail cam and wow…it’s still taking pictures… so I reviewed the pictures…I set it up there Sept 18, 2014…and it ’s been there working since.

Over 600 pics of hundreds of elk, moose whitetail deer, mule deer, some friends on foot, coyotes and some rams, yup rams…Dodge Rams that is…pick-ups.

It was an interesting stay and when we got home we both slept in the next morning. It was hot while out there, but the back was cloudy so it was tolerable. We went thru a lot of water and almost ran out.

Beanie Baby Economics

o n to t h e m u n t i l t h ey we r e wo r t h some serious coinage once again.

I believe this is what investment guru Warren Buffet calls speculation - in fact I’m speculating he has a closet full of Beanies he’s sitting on until the market turns. If it’s good enough for Warren Buffet, it’s good enough for me.

I bought them all! I took them home and researched each and every one of them. It was official; they were all technically worthless...for the moment.

However, my research also yielded some priceless information - there were some valuable beanies out there NOW! And so began my hunt for red Tabasco - a rare red Beanie bull due to its limited run under this name. The Tabasco® Company threatened to sue and the bull’s name was changed to Snort immediately thereafter.

There are other valuable Beanies out there, such as the elusive Princess Diana Beanie, the original six, and the royal blue version of Peanut the elephant, that topped the list for value. So that was how, 20 years after the fact, I was gripped by a Beanie Baby frenzy of my own making.

The search for rare Beanie Babies continues, but I began to second guess having those worthless ones languish-

It was good to get out to the cabin; I was shocked to see it so green with all the waterholes full and even some washouts on back roads, with mud puddles on the deser t like countr y roads.

It was just Miss Pickles and I. Miss Pickles is now 100 per cent after her operation. The first thing she does when we get there is run up onto the deck, neither of seeing the basketball size hornet/wasp nest underneath.

Yup there for all of 30 seconds and she has two wasp stings on the nose; and here I am with no bee sting medicine for her, so I quickly decided to hit my first trail-cam area and make her run off the stings.

That was a hard five kilometers from the cabin, but that strategy worked.

The instant swelling went down quick.

The fast running worked out all the sting symptoms from her body.

After that she demanded running ever y where we went; which was a good workout for her and was many miles/km’s as I set up trail cameras and tree stands in a vast area.

I carried lots of water for her; even with obvious giant downpours, water there is few and far between, and the elk sign was slow as it is most years during this time, but surprisingly deer were numerous.

We arrived at one of my tree stand locations, and I was prepared to set up a trail cam where I had one last year.

This was where I har vested my bull elk last year and was an area worth watching.

Once the family was gathered I had them blindly choose a Beanie out of a bag and told them whatever Beanie they ended up with was their spirit animal.

Oddly enough, this ruse went over extremely well and no one seemed to mind that I was giving them used items that were virtually worthless.

Ever yone star ted justif ying their spirit animals immediately. My sister in law ’s mother questione d how a parrot could be her spirit animal but her husband quickly cleared up the mystery by pointing out how much she liked to talk.

My daughter picked a bear named Cashew who happened to be the twin of a bear named Pecan - my daughter ’s a t win. Her t win picked a bat - she’s a nighthawk. I even star ted to fall for it myself. My spirit Beanie, the Flamingo, made per fect sense because I need to run before I can fly in my dreams.

Then things got serious. All of a sudden this ruse had rules.

My niece’s eight-year-old son asked

me if it was okay to trade his spirit animal. Apparently he wasn’t feeling his tie-dyed “Peace” bear; after all, it was no Garcia. (Yet another rare bear due to its limited run under this name as it was named after Jerr y Garcia of Grateful Dead fame, but without permission from his estate.) “Everyone remember,” I replied dogmatically, “Your spirit animal picked you, you didn’t pick it - absolutely NO TRADES!” This sent some people into a panic NO TRADES? Some wanted to trade!

Some wanted to hold! One wanted to buy. No one wanted to sell. Beanie Babies turned into a commodity right before my eyes, and my living room turned into Wall Street. What was happening?

It was a microcosm of the Beanie B a by f r e n z y f r o m t h e 19 9 0 ’s , and a basic lesson in economics and psychology - how the illusion of supply and demand can create temporar y insanity in other wise per fectly normal people.

But it got me thinking...if only I could replicate this Beanie Baby mania on a larger scale...but first I would need to get my hands on some more Beanies.

Hmmm...I wonder if Buffet is ready to sell.

In a recent survey of 2,461 Canadians, when it comes to driving traffic to automotive websites, or visits to a dealership, print and online newspapers rank highest. They outperform TV,

radio, magazines, autoTRADER, Kijiji and social media.

If you’re looking for better ROI from your advertising, perhaps more of your “I” should be in newspapers.

Being single means I have no one but me to please and I can go when and where I please. Kind of lonely tho so most look forward to company in their travels.

Once there’s a crew of even only one, there has to be someone who makes a decision on things like when, where, and how you get to where you’re going, how warm or cool it’s going to be, what music you’re going to have, etc etc.

Let’s talk about a house-hold, say, or a farm, business or like, that has lots of different jobs or departments and you have different chores and things that need leadership and direction. You need input from all sides, but don’t you really need someone to sort through the ideas and make an informed decision to hopefully benefit all? Couldn’t you immediately tell in just a first quick impression the spirit of a home, barn, place of business, the morale of the people involved to see the quality of the leader involved!!

and to take satisfaction in doing anything the best we could. You’ve all read stories of commanders who led their charges into battle, and did all they could to make sure they had a chance to be victorious.

The men all would gladly go where a good commander would lead. There are also stories where the exact opposite would occur. I’ve heard Dad comment about someone who would be a leader saying, “That guy couldn’t lead a thirsty horse to water.” Yes, there are people who ask to be our leader that that fact surely applies too. In our political area especially!!

Everyone deserves to have an opinion and have a say on current affairs that have an impact on their lives. Maybe I should say everyone won’t agree with that. I guess it’s all the way we interpret the facts. That’s why we have so many politicians.

Back a way I had an opportunity to travel by train all across Canada and saw the vast prairie fields and the Canadian Shield and Great Lake areas with the miles of water and timber. I saw the great cities of Winnepeg and Toronto, Montreal, and even the fishing areas of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Such a wonderful diverse country and so

how can just anyone from any one area know all the problems of all the different concerns. Yes, we need representatives from all those areas to report to the, “Leader.”

A mining area rep would have different ideas of what effected his economics then a man from Atlantic Canada or the Prairies and someone who represented a manufacturing area like metropolitan Toronto wouldn’t know about a pulp and paper areas either, you think?

Then suppose they try to explain their concerns to a politician who is a lawyer with none of the above. See a light any where?

Ever wonder how it would be if they had a minister of finance who had an idea of having to meet a payroll!!

Ever get the idea that we have a system where the nearsighted are leading the blind? I think anyone who feels compelled to lead should have more of a practical experience in something then simply being a politician. Make you wonder why if anyone had any use to them otherwise why they would bother!!

Many seniors I have talked to can recall the days before the Second World War, when the depression had all the world in an iron grip of poverty. There were many

folks who had hardship beyond anything we can even imagine today, but they see similar happening transpiring now that have them thinking we’re in for a similar predicament again. “Heaven Forbid.” So I guess my idea is that we should really take an interest in this upcoming election, and study the history of the people who would like to become our leader. We certainly can’t afford a mistake this time.

We need to prepare for hard times and we do need a real leader!!

Leadership is a talent like playing music or maybe being an artist. Just anyone with a bright idea, good looks and family money, doesn’t necessarily transpire into leadership qualities.

Look around and see the hardship and despair that comes from a misguided leader. We have evidence in our history books and certainly in recent history here in Canada. we as voters have a duty to study the people who would be leaders and keep the rejects away from the controls. That’s OUR job!!

I hear so many people telling me there is no use to vote and they take no interest in running the show. Again it’s OUR job.

We must show that leadership is important and it’s up to us to chose the right one!!

I still had access to television when the so-called Senate Scandal was the most sensational news stor y to excite us in the spring of 2013. As voyeuristic as the next curious onlooker, I watched the proceedings, observed the manner with which the perpetrators of the apparent transgressions were handled, and considered my own opinions about the alleged conduct of Brazeau, Duffy, and Wallin, now former (but still on public payroll) Senators appointed by our leader, Stephen Harper.

It’s hard not to conjure the image of ‘Hogs at the Trough’, even for the most fairminded and diplomatic among us. Don’t these good folks get paid enough through legitimate remuneration to which they are entitled, we wonder? To hear the details of per diems charged to the public purse was

Temptation exists all around us. It’s not unusual for each one of us, at some time during our lives, to find an opportunity to take more than we deserve and act upon it, to filch a record for personal advantage, to slip an extra item into the bag without paying, to claim expenses on an expense account that we fully recognize borders the edge of bogus. If you steal and nobody sees or catches you, does it count?

When I was twelve or thirteen, I tried my hand at shoplifting. I stole two lp records in the bright light of day, in the middle of a busy Saturday afternoon. That was a scary endeavour. And stupidly puzzling, I know, particularly as I had the money to pay for the goods but opted instead to pilfer from the retailer. The memory of it gives me a bit of a quiver even now, a hundred years later.

As an adult, I wouldn’t pinch a roll of lifesavers, but something about getting something extra, something without paying, drew me

into that brief moment of larceny. That’s all it takes, I think. In the moment you’re faced with an opportunity, you either act or turn away. I am happy to report that despite my participation in that unsavoury act, for me the thrill of thievery is definitely long gone.

Amid the current bombardment of eau de skunk attack ads featuring foolish assertions about political opponents, the lizardly deeds of the Senate continue to slither into the collective Canadian psyche to assault us in the form of the long and winding road of the Mike Duffy trial. If details were quicksand, reading or viewing even one-tenth of those associated with this one fellow would sink our expectation and belief that there exists a high standard of honesty among those who depend upon public monies for their livelihoods.

Is it human nature to take as much as possible, given the opportunity? What is the reward for being an honest, hardworking citizen as opposed to be a smiling diplomat

upholding a respectable public image while grazing and grabbing from every source possible when you think no one’s watching?

And what’s the cost of this insatiable appetite, the bloodless crime of greed?

Well, we all pay in one way or another. The retailer jacks the prices to balance the ripoffs of product guaranteed to come. The surveillance required to deter potential thieves adds to the cost of operations. Up the ladder a few rungs, we pay again for the transgressions of those who just can’t seem to figure out how to live within their means.

We pay for the disruption these acts create in the efficiency of our government. We pay again for the prosecution. We probably pay for the defence. We pay for the damage done.

When there are cracks at the source of that which we look to for guidance, for exemplary adherence to what is fair, we all pay.

We all pay for the spectacle of it, and each one of us is diminished that it exists at all.

Raise The Roof Fundraiser For Kitscoty Curling Club

The Kitscoty Curling Club is holding a shrimp and steak fry event at the Kitscoty Hall on Thursday, August 20 to raise funds for their curling rink.

There will be entertainment from The Dirt Rich Band and musician Aaron Pritchett.

“The roof has been leaking for the last couple of years and we were kind of getting to the point where we would have to either end the curling club or put some money into it,” said Kitscoty curling club committee member, Landon Franson.

“We came together for this fundraiser and it’s been great, the community has really pulled together. All the proceeds go to keeping our curling rink alive and waterproof. Our tickets are already sold

out for the event,” said Franson. supper is at 6:30 p.m. The Dirt Rich Band will close out the evening.

“The cost of the new roof is estimated will start at 8:00 p.m. and Aaron Pritchett at $40,000 to repair and construction aims to be finished by the end of September.”

Prizes up for grabs include a trip for two to Mexico to an all-inclusive resort for one week, 10 hours of combining from Tingley’s Harvest Center, an autographed Andrew Ference Edmonton Oilers jersey and an autographed John Chick Saskatchewan Roughriders jersey.

“I would like to extend a huge thanks to the community of Kitscoty for all their support,” said Franson.

“There has been a huge amount of community support and we wouldn’t have been able to put this together if it wasn’t for the community.”

Here we are midsummer, enjoying the warmth and the foliage, but we are all aware of how quickly the last two weeks of August will fly by, sending us into fall activities. From the Arts perspective, things have been gradually unfolding even though we are in our summer hiatus.

Murals The third mural, the portraits of a fireman, an RCMP, and a veteran is underway and then Barry Overn, our muralist, will move to the Seniors’ Centre to do a sign on the wall adjacent to the mural there. This sign will read VERMILION HERITAGE PARK, A Tribute to Community Builders Past and Present. These words reflect the intent of

the plaques bearing names of those who have supported our community by donating to the Vermilion Mural Project. The fourth mural, a floral tribute to Communities in Bloom, will be the last mural project for this year. Barry will complete this late August/ early September after the dust settles from the Coop demolition. Because of the quality of the murals and the interest from the public, we have future mural hopes and plans, so we invite you to contribute to this project if you haven’t done so. Cheques can be made out to Vermilion Allied Arts and mailed to Box 3042, Vermilion, T9X 1B2. A $200 donation allows you to enter the name of your choice on a plaque. “Play Me, I’m Yours!”

By mid- September or earlier, Vermilion will have joined in the world wide “Play Me, I’m Yours” venture. Forty one participating countries have pianos on main streets in their cities and towns, and the theme means exactly what the words say. People are invited to sit down at these pianos and make music. Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and several more Canadian centres have street pianos. In fact, after Karl and Jean Vidal came across a street piano in Kelowna, they expressed that they felt it’s time for Vermilion to have a piano.

As a result, a piano for Vermilion mainstreet, generously donated by Sarah Lynn Kennedy, will sit under the arbour by Apple Drugs for June, July, August, and September each year. Doreen from Vermilion Paint & Home Decor is not only donating the paint but has also rounded up some cohorts to do the painting and art work that will transform this piano into a fun item for our town.

Get your fingers practising on the ivories so that you can be part of the fun.

Alberta Culture Days, September 25 – 27 The details for our Alberta Culture Days celebration our sliding into place and before long you will see a detailed schedule for each day. Mark these dates on your calendar because there will definitely be something for everyone. Art Attack by FOCUS, a Japanese drumming group, a BBQ, and more will be on the Friday schedule. Saturday will provide a host of activities including Fearless Art with Joan Blamire, hand bells, taekwondo, jiujitsu, art activities for children, Art in the Park sponsored by Good Life, ham radio activities, a storyteller just back from international competitions in Greece, “Spying on Solar

Rays” with Rob Baron, applied research information with Lakeland College and the scoop on drones, and more. There will even be carriage horses at the fairgrounds – come for a ride or try driving a carriage!

Alumni Hall at the College will be the place to go on Saturday evening to wander the Hallway of the Arts and take in Showcase where dance groups and talented young people will entertain. Hopefully a string quartet will be playing during the Hallway of the Arts, so you won’t want to miss out on the wonderful sound these strings produce in the open area of Alumni Hall.

Such a nice effect! After Showcase, Bye Bye Blues, another film by CBC Director Anne Wheeler, will be shown in the theatre at 8:45. On Sunday, in addition to the CLASS multicultural potluck and entertainment, there will be art activities and storytelling time for children. I haven’t mentioned everything because some details are still falling into place, but I can say for sure that you will be able to find some food Saturday noon, maybe browse through a show and shine, and maybe this and maybe that!

Allied Arts Tickets Allied Arts tickets will be available after August 20 at Fantasy Flowers. The first show, October 3, is the The Carolines, a trio of ladies, who know how to sing and entertain. Saturday, November 7, is Going to Graceland, and the Mistletoe Celebration with the Pelletiers is Saturday, December 5, complete with dinner and show.

H ere i s a h o m e made cake recipe that requires no bowl and no b eater s, so t he cleanup is super easy.

It contains no eggs or dairy, therefore this is a great recipe for people with dairy or egg allergies.

Does this sound wacky? That’s because it really is.

This recipe can be traced back to the 1930’s. It was invented by some smart cook during the great depression as a moist cake, which uses the most basic of ingredients. This recipe was also popular during World War 2, when many ingredi-

ents were scarce and rationed.

It defies traditional food science cake making principles, yet it delivers wonderful results, with minimal fuss or ingredients. Through the decades it has been called Wacky Cake.

This cake became popular again in the 1970’s and today it is again making its resurgence in trendy blogs. The one cup of water can be substituted with one cup of coffee or one half cup coffee plus one half cup water.

This cake is not at its best when warm, but once cooled, it has been a family favourite for many generations. A chocolate icing is a nice finishing touch. The real beauty of this cake is in its pure simplicity and old fashioned taste.

The texture is slightly spongy, moist and hearty. For additional chocolate flavor you can stir in 3/4 of a cup of chocolate chips. For a gluten-free wacky cake, use one and a half cups of gluten free pancake mix for the flour. I like using the pancake mix, because all the different flours are premixed in the right proportions, so it saves lots of time. For a vanilla wacky cake omit the cocoa powder and double up on the vanilla.

Wacky Cake 1 1/2 cup unbleached flour (or all purpose) 3 Ta b l e s p o o n s c o c o a p o w d e r (unsweetened) 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon white vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 6 tablespoons oil 1 cup water

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Mix the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda and salt in the bottom of a 8 x 8 “baking pan. Smooth out the dry ingredients and make three depression wells in the dry ingredients. Put the vinegar in one well, the vanilla in one well and the oil in the last well. Pour the water over the entire pan and then mix well until smooth.

Bake on the middle rack of your oven for approximately 35 minutes or until a tooth pick comes out clean.

Since my move into the “ farming” c o m munit y in 2010 - I have been taken aback by the amazing contributions of Farmwives, not only in their homes and in their families; but also in their c o m m u n i t i e s. T h e s e wo m e n h ave been pillars in their communities for a very long time, and they continue to be today.

I have been so moved by this tireless devotion, in fact, that I’ve just completed writing a book, which profiles and celebrates them. My aim is to give them the recognition they deserve, and to honour their legacies to the larger patchwork of Canada’s Heritage.

Prior to the release of the full book - I am releasing brief excerpts from each interview. The full book contains 17 in-depth questions and answers about their life, photos, as well as, a recipe from each of the women. How long have you been married, and if you have children - how many do you have?

As of June 30, 2015, Bob and I have been married for 60 years. We married in 1955. I was 18. We have 4 children, 1 son and 3 daughters. We have 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Barbed Wire Fencing Vs. Wildlife

On July 30 a juvenile great horned owl landed on a barbed wire fence south of Highway 16 and in his attempt to escape managed to wrap his wing around the barbed wire causing extensive tissue and other damage to the wing.

A piece of metal fencing was removed from the wing that contained four barbs.

According to the Director of Wildlife at the Edmonton Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, Kim Blomme, this is a common occurrence among young birds as they are inexperienced flyers.

“They get caught in it, they struggle and end up twisting around and around,” said Blomme.

Snowy owls also often run into trouble in the winter with barbed wire fences as mice tend to pop up around the poles and owls will swoop in and get tangled in the fence said Blomme.

Other wildlife is also susceptible to death and injury as a result of barbed wire fencing. A fact sheet compiled from various studies that appears on the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area website concludes that 1 ungulate (elk, deer or moose…) get tangled per 4 km of fence on average each year and that 90 per cent of deaths were fawns found curled up near fences – likely because they could not follow their mothers across the fence.

It also cited that most animals died when a leg got caught between the two top wires while trying to jump over; woven wire fences topped with barbed wire were found to be the most deadly.

Barbed wire fencing has been around since the mid-1800’s and it is said to be the number one reason cowboys were put out of work since it was such an effective and inexpensive method of restraining cattle.

Barbed wire fencing has also been used in WWI in trench warfare as well as other battles/wars throughout the century.

“There’s a lot of barbed wire fences around,” said Blomme. The Society received another young great horned owl last week with injuries sustained as a result of being tangled up in barbed wire fencing.

“It does a lot of damage. We can’t ask people to replace their fencing, but we would ask people to consider a better option when erecting new fencing,” added Blomme.

A Great Horned Owl’s Fighting Chance

A great horned owl that was taken to the Edmonton Wildlife Rehabilitation Society on July 30 after it was discovered that one of its wings was impaled on a barbed wire fence south of Hwy 16, is continuing wound care, said the Director of Wildlife at the Society, Kim Blomme.

Referring to the damaged wing Blomme said some tissue is healing and some still looks pretty bad.

“You can see it’s trying to heal,” she added.

The great horned owl, who has been nicknamed Olaf by Vermilion Voice staff, has a few things working in his favour, however.

“His will to live is strong,” said Blomme.

“He’s very feisty.”

“Olaf” is still bandaged and requires wound management three times a day.

“He hates us,” Blomme added jokingly.

“We hope it’s not too stressful. He’s still very frightened and has to be tweezer fed...once he realizes were giving him

The fact that the owl is a great horned owl and, therefore, is a non-migratory bird, means there is “no real big rush” to release him back to the wild added Blomme.

“We do want to keep trying with him. If an animal has a chance, we’ll do whatever we can. We cannot control the outcome, but we can control the level of care.”

If the best case scenario is realized and “Olaf” gets his wings back, the Society is thinking of returning him to the Vermilion area where Voice publisher Sue Chikie originally found him.

“Although it’s not necessary as he is a young owl and has not established his territory, we think it would make a nice close to this story,” The Edmonton Wildlife Rehabilitation Society is a non-profit organization that is solely donor-supported. food and not changing his bandages, he takes the food quite well.”

Apart from wound care “Olaf” also requires physio everyday and must be put under anaesthesia so his ligament can be massaged.

“The patagial ligament is like elastic. As he opens his wing that ligament needs to stretch with it.” Blomme added the damage done to the owl’s wing was extensive and that it is not just one thing that needs to heal.

“His elbow and wrist have also been affected. They are stiff. They need to fully extend as well,” she added.

“We did an x-ray and saw changes in the elbow at the beginning. It is difficult to know whether this will impede flight.”

Blomme likened birds’ wings to Swiss watches in the sense that both rely on precision in order to function properly.

The owl was looked at on Saturday Aug. 8 by a veterinarian who works with the Society said Blomme.

Blomme added there is a limited learning curve for wildlife in these situations.

“Usually their first encounter with this type of fence is their last. One incident is enough to kill,” she added.

There were a series of personal bests for many of the Vermilion Vipers Clu b swim m er s at t he Wainwr ig ht Regionals that took place on Aug. 7 and four local swimmers advanced to the provincial finals in Edmonton on Aug. 15 and 16.

“We have a young club. We did very well in Wainwright,” said Vipers Coach Crimson Haslehurst.

“Lauren (Nienaber) tried the butterfly (stroke) for the first time. She did awesome and finished with a time of 27.67,” added Haslehurst.

Haslehurst mentioned other personal bests including ZiQi Shang who managed to shave off 5 seconds from his breast stroke.

Haslehurst also managed to pull off some personal bests in her 100 individual medley and 100 meter backstroke.

After the Regional’s in Wainwright, the Vipers qualified a relay team for the Provincials. The team is comprised of swimmers, Crimson Haslehurst, Sierra King, Raelene Lupul and Desiree King. “ We are third in our region, and seventh or eighth in the province.”

In terms of grabbing a relay medal at the provincials Haslehurst said, “If we are going fast, anything is possible.”

The individual provincial event qualifiers were Crimson Haslehurst for the 100 fly, 100 back, 200 IM, and 100 IM; Sierra King for the 50 free; and Raelene Lupul for the 50 breast and 100 IM.

Haslehurst said she thinks her best shot at winning an individual medal at the provincials will be in the 100 fly.

“I’ll try my best,” she said.

Most of us look forward to summer weather through the many long months of winter here in Alberta, but when those hot temps finally arrive, it’s important to enjoy safely.

To help you master the mercury rising, Alberta Health Services (AHS) encourages you to take these simple steps.

Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.

Take frequent breaks from heat, spending time indoors at cooled public buildings (including malls or indoor pools).

Drink plenty of water and other nonalcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle.

Apply a sunscreen of at least sun protection factor (SPF) 30, at least 20 minutes before heading outdoors. Be sure the SPF 30 screens out both UVA and UVB rays, and reapply frequently

(as directed on product label).

Wear light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants that cover skin.

While awaiting medical attention, move the individual to a shaded area, remove his or her outer clothing and shoes, and wrap the person in a

wet towel until medical care is being provided.

Remem ber: E xc es sive heat c an aggravate underlying medical illness such as congestive heart failure, can also be of heightened danger to children and seniors, and individuals who are socially isolated may not know when or how to seek help, or be able to monitor their own symptoms. Be a good neighbour, and watch out for the seniors and children in your area.

Organizers all across the country of this year’s Walk for Her Walk of Hope on September 13 are gearing up for Ovarian Cancer’s largest one day event. Designed to increase awareness, provide suppor t, and raise the much needed funds to overcome ovarian cancer, the Walk of Hope takes place in over 45 communities nationwide. With only four walk locations in Alberta and two in Saskatchewan, Vermilion’s Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope location is very special. Members of our community and surrounding communities have the opportunity to gather together to celebrate, support, provide strength, and encouragement to women and families who have been touched by this disease.

Each year 2,800 Canadian women are newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It is the 5 th most common cancer for women and the most fatal women’s cancer in Canada. As there is no reliable screening test, the disease is usually caught in its late stages and results in 55 percent of women dying within five years of diagnosis.

In August of 2014, my mom’s life was one of the 1,750 lives that ovarian cancer claims each year. After a diagnosis in 2003, my mom underwent surg er y and c hemotherapy treatment. Over the next 12 years, she bat tled four reoccurrences through surgeries, many rounds of chemotherapy, and radiation. Her strong, positive, fighting spirit enabled her to survive beyond the statistics. But, as with most ovarian cancer patients, the disease eventually took her life.

Vermilion’s 4th annual Walk of Hope is on Sunday, September 13 at the CN Station in the Vermilion Provincial Park. The event begins with registration at 10:00 am, followed by a ribbon

cutting to get the 11:00 walk underway and wrapping up at noon with special presentations. This year’s event features a balloon to release for each participant as well as a 2.5 km, 5 km, or 10km walk through the beautiful trails of Vermilion Provincial Park. Par ticipants can register as an individual or part of a team online at www.ovariancancerwalkofhope.ca or in person the morning of the walk. Please show your support and join us to celebrate the strength women and families and raise awareness about ovarian cancer. Each person can make a difference.

Lakeland College Alum Paints His Path To Success

When Colin Starkevich started Lakeland College’s wildlife and fisheries conservation (WFC) program in the fall of 2008, he had a definite career path in mind.

He wanted to be an artist.

His artistic journey began in high school in 2006 when his art teacher Dr. Brenda Savella taught him to paint with oils. A year later he won the national Get to Know Your Wild Neighbours art contest. In 2009 he was personally invited by Robert Bateman to attend his weeklong Master Artists Seminar in 2010.

Star kevi c h enrolled in the WFC program at the Vermilion campus so he could learn more about wildlife and their habitats because he knew that was the subject he wanted to paint. “The program gave me an opportunity to work with wildlife and see them up close in places most people can’t access.”

Af ter g r ad u at i n g fr o m L ake l an d College in 2010, Starkevich transferred his diploma credits to the University of Lethbridge where he completed a bachelor of science in environmental science in 2013. He then moved to the Arctic where he worked for Environment Canada as a wildlife technician in a snow geese breeding colony. Later

he did bird surveys for Nature Alberta.

When Starkevich wasn’t working, studying or creating bird mounts (he’s also an avian taxidermist), he was creatingthe artwork that would one day help him achieve a goal he had dreamed about since his days as aLakeland student.

During an ornithology class, instructor Chris Olsen encouraged students to visit the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton as it has the largest collection of mounted birds in Canada.

While at the museum, Starkevich became inspired by all of the wildlife exhibits featuring paintings and taxidermy and began daydreaming of one day having his own exhibit at the Royal Alberta Museum.

He no longer needs to dream.

This year more than 60 of Starkevich’s original paintings are on display in the Royal Alberta Museum’s 2,500 sq. f t. feature galler y. The exhibit opened May 16 and can be seen until Sept. 27. “I really connected with the Grasslands

Region and started painting landscapes and wildlife in that setting. It’s the work I’m most passionate about,” explains Starkevich, who also paintsen plein air which is outside surrounded by the landscape he’s depicting.

Since the exhibit opened at the Royal Alberta Museum, Starkevich, 25, has received accolades about his artwork from family, friends and strangers. “The feedback has been very positive. I know that I want to keep painting and be the best artist I can be.”

Some of his pieces from Glimpses of the Grasslands will be on display from November until Januaryat CASA (Creating Arts in Southern Alberta)in Lethbridge.

That is also the city where the native Edmontonian will be living this fall as he returns to the University of Lethbridge to work on his master’s and “a project that will start the next chapter of The Grassland Series.”

Wildlife Artist Colin Starkevich Talks About His Passion

At just 25 years of age, wildlife artist Colin Starkevich has achieved what many artists dream about achieving their whole lives but never get - an exhibition at the Royal Alberta Museum!

For Colin, being a wildlife artist is his number one priority and he can’t imagine himself doing anything else.

Starkevich said he can spend anywhere from 150 to 300 hours on some of his bigger pieces and it can take from 30 hours to over 150 hours on the smaller paintings.

“Since I was 16 and I started to paint I realized that this was what I wanted to focus on. “I know it will take a little while to get there but it just seems that every year that passes I am getting more and more success and now this recent exhibition at the Royal Alberta Museum has been a huge step forward. It really is a dream come true for me,” said artist Starkevich.

After studying at Lakeland College in Vermilion, Starkevich received a diploma in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation.

“I felt that by gaining more knowledge about my subject matter and about what I love to paint... that by gaining that knowledge I am able to paint my art work a lot more accurately, and from a biological perspective as well, to paint more realistically.

“I felt that Lakeland College helped me a lot. At the same time I knew it would also open up doors for me where I can contribute to the conservation of our natural world.”

Starkevich gets his inspiration for some of his paintings when he is out hiking or when he has an encounter with a wild animal in its natural environment.

“I just say to myself, wow that’s my painting. I have to paint that and then I kind of get the visual in my mind of what I want my painting to look like. I sketch the visual of my painting then I go out and take about 20 reference photographs of the environment to give me an idea of which colours I want to portray in my painting.”

“I am really passionate about the wetlands and that part of the country and that is what I want to keep working on right now.

“It takes a lot of discipline. It’s a big part of my life. It’s not always fun and easy; I can get really tired sometimes when I’m

painting for hours,” said Starkevich.

Colin’s intentions are to improve his at the Gallery On Main in Lacombe and Starkevich said he greatly admires artistic practice, while growing his body available for purchase. You can contact wildlife artist Robert Bateman, whom he of work.

Colin wants the artwork to show others some of the beautiful wild places that exist in Alberta. He also hopes to use the work in this series to contribute to conservation projects within the region, while raising awareness of the grasslands.

• Puddles under your car: your car requires a myriad of different fluids to run properly – brake fluid, transmission fluid, gasoline, oil, and coolant. Each is vital for the operation of your car, and any puddles or leaking fluids should not be ignored.

This summer saw Kuk Sool Won Vermilion promote its very first Dahn Bo Nim or Black Brown Belt (Black Belt candidate).

This is a very important milestone in a student’s career, as the much coveted 1st Degree Black Belt is just around the corner! “Black Brown Belt gets its name from the transformation the belt makes.”

Third degree Black Belt Chief Instructor Morgan Freeman said, “You see the student has to test constantly for no less than 2 years and every time the student passes a test another stripe is added, thus the belt turns from brown to black.”

The Labour Operator will report to the Transportation & Utilities Foreman and work within a team environment. This full-time permanent position (40 hours per week) is responsible for labour duties related to the Transportation & Utilities Department.

Your skills and abilities include: • A Grade 12 Diploma, or equivalent • Must possess Alberta Class 3 Driver’s License, with Air Brake Endorsement and provide an abstract upon request.

• Operation of heavy equipment including loader, tandem truck, backhoe, etc.

• Be physically fit and able to do heavy work and lifting (medical will be required from successful applicant) • Willing to work in all types of weather and under all conditions • Competent oral and written communications with good interpersonal skills • A defensive driving course would be an asset • Ability to work within a team environment • Basic mechanical skills, and complete daily maintenance of equipment and vehicles.

The Town of Vermilion offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The annual salary range for this position is $50,422 - $63,800 depending upon qualifications and experience.

A successful candidate is subject to Town of Vermilion Employment Compensation and Benefits Policy and will require both an RCMP security clearance and medical.

Musician Indio Saravanja Coming To Vermilion

The Vermilion Folk Club will kick off the season with an open air Concert in the Vermilion Provincial Park with music from Indio Saravanja on August 31. “ Weather cooperating it will be a great evening, it ’s a great setting,” said Rod MacMillan, the Vermilion Folk Entertainment Director. “Come along and bring your lawn chairs, if the weather turns nast y we will go inside but we sure hope to hold it

outside.”

This is the only outdoor event of the year for the Folk Club.

Indio Saravanja was born in Argentina and raised in the Canadian North.

The singer started his music career busking in Montreal subways at the age of 15.

He was performing as a street musician in Spain by 17, and, at 19, doing his first real gig in New York, courtesy of his friend Jeff Buckley.

By this time he had appeared in countless dance, theatre, and music p r o d u c t i o n s o n C a n a d a’s b i g g e s t

stages and realized that music was his calling.

Saravanja spent his 20’s learning to rock on the Canadian bar band circuit and writing until an invitation came to record and release his celebrated debut album with Caribou Records label in 2005.

Af ter five albums, Saravanja continues to add to his well-earned Roots-Folk-Rock tag by re-acquainting himself with his South American heritage with the use of instruments such as the Andean Charango. After a decade spent in British Columbia and a few years in Alberta, Indio and his young family now live in Toronto.

Indio has been consistently featured on national CBC radio shows sin c e his fir st release, whi c h was voted Best New Discover y of 2006

by Canada’s leading folk magazines, and his music has been on steady rotation internationally on leading college and independent stations. He has performed hundreds of concerts in Canad a an d a broad, an d m any folk festivals, the largest being the main stage of the 2007 Winnipeg Folk Festival.

Saravanja has opened shows and s hare d st ag es for an d wit h Br u c e Cockburn, Buffy Sainte Marie, Sylvia Tyson, Josh Ritter, Fred Eaglesmith, Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, Bill Bourne, and many others. He got First Place prize at The 2012 Calgary Folk Festival Song Competition.

The concert start time is 7:00 p.m. on August 31st at the CN Station in the Vermilion Provincial Park. Tickets are now on sale for $20.00.

Avoid Feeding Your Cat These 5 Foods

Some human foods can pose ha z ar d s for c at s be c ause of their u n i q u e m et a b o l i s m a n d d i g e s t i ve system. These foods may even cause severe illness or death. Resisting the urge to feed cats table scraps can be challenging, but Pure Balance, a holistic cat food available at Walmart, shares the following list of foods pet owners should avoid feeding to their

cats: • Milk –Shortly after they’re weaned, kittens lose the ability to digest milk.

If your cat consumes a high level of lactose they may suffer from an upset stomach and diarrhea.

• Cooked meats – Although we may associate meat or meat by-products with a cat ’s nutritional needs, they must be combined with other ingredients to provide complete nutrition.

Cooked meats alone can be high in fat

and do not contain a proper balance of nutrients.

• Chocolate – As with dogs, chocolate can be quite harmful to your cat. While most cats are not drawn to sweets, a chocolate snack can cause increased heart rate, tremors and hyperactivity.

• Raw fish – Some raw fish c an cause a deficiency of the vitamin thiamine. Signs of a thiamine deficiency include anorexia (complete loss of appetite), abnormal posture, weak-

ness, seizures and even death.

• Bones – Small, soft bones (such as pork chop, fish or chicken bones) should never be given to your cat, as they may splinter and lodge in the cat’s mouth or throat and cause digestive distress.

Cats are curious by nature and may poke around the trash and accidentally ingest something they shouldn’t.

If you suspec t your pet may be in distress, be sure to contact your vet immediately.
