Two of three dogs trained in the province of Alberta to sniff out mussel-fouled boats during mandatory inspections were “working” the Vermilion weigh station inspection site on July 31.

Hilo and a German Shepherd named Suess are rescue dogs that were trained at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife by a non-profit organization called Working Dogs for Conservation in partnership with the state of Montana and the province of Alberta.

Sawchuk who joked that they now refer to the one-year old Hilo as a career change dog.

Dog handlers Sawchuk and Hannah McKenzie (Seuss’s handler) gave a demonstration of how quickly the dogs find mussels. They planted one in the bilge of a boat (a common area mussels are discovered) and both dogs found it within minutes.

So far, Sawchuk said ten mussels have been detected this year at various stations set up in Alberta. The most recent discovery was made in Dunmore last week by the third trained dog, a chocolate lab named Diesel.

“There is no doubt the dogs outpeform

the humans every time,” said Sawchuk. “ But they are here to augment the program, not to replace people.”

Part of this augmentation will include having the dogs sniff out the mussels at night and to process boats faster when there is increased traffic at the stations.

“Since the boat inspections have become mandatory, we have more than doubled the boats that were inspected last year,” said Sawchuk who added there was still another upcoming long weekend to contend with.

Sawchuk said people love seeing the dogs at the inspection sites, but that nothing can replace a friendly smile.

finished their training at the end of June.

“It was an intense training program that took place over 16 days,” said Cindy Sawchuk, Aquatic Invasive Species Operations Lead and one of the newly trained dog handlers.

“These are high-energy working dogs.”

Sawchuk added that not every dog is suitable for this type of work. “Only one in a thousand dogs will display what is called ‘high ball drive’.

Dogs exhibiting this drive will work hard to discover mussels hiding in boats for a reward.

“We need dogs that care about a reward and will focus for long periods of time to get that reward,” said Sawchuk.

“It’s not the mussel they want; it’s the reward after they find the mussel.”

However, Sawchuk’s dog Hilo has been known to eat the mussels as a reward as well.

Hilo was originally slated to be a guide dog for the blind, but “flunked out,” said

This year the Wainwright Lucky 13 4-H Lighthorse Club played host to 29 members from eight Northeastern Regional clubs during a three-day horse camp that was held at the Vermilion Ag grounds on Aug. 6 to 9.

Lucky 13 Club Leader, Jodi Dahlgren, said planning for the three-day camp usually begins in December or January.

“We start thinking of different classes and checking instructors’ availability,” said Dahlgren.

“We already have a format, after that, things just fill in from there.”

Dahlgren said the camp switches every year between Vermilion and Vegreville.

“When it’s in Vermilion it is always following the first long weekend in August.

The Vermilion Ag Society donates the use of their grounds. They’re great. It makes things a lot easier when you are familiar with the grounds.”

This year four instructors taught a variety of skills in a variety of disciplines including, reining, equitation (Western and English), trail, groundwork, roping, leatherwork, grass ring, jumping and gymkhana. There was also some fun and

games included for both horse and rider, including a costume parade and supper on Thursday night.

“It’s great for getting out and meeting new people; kids can meet other ‘horsey’ crazy kids, and it is fun,” she added.

“By day two you begin to see the bonds developing.”

Dahlgren said she attended the very first camp back in 1993.

“I went to university the next year.

Coming from a small town I was able to walk into university knowing a bunch of people I had met at the camp.”

Dahlgren also said courses offered during the camp are very condensed and provide 4-H members the opportunity to receive instruction in a variety of disciplines they may not be familiar with.

“If they like it, they can proceed from there,” added Dahlgren.

Rob Heiland, an instructor from Hanna, said he has been teaching groundwork and roping at the 4-H’s camps for about five years.

“I do it for the kids,” he said. “Especially when they’ve been struggling and they take that leadership role; then they’re smiling from ear to ear. That makes it all worthwhile.”

Dewberry Home Of Chuckwagon Champions Holds Prairie Racing Series

This year’s Prairie Racing Series in Dewberry was hosted by the Frog Lake First Nations from July 30 to August 2.

Frog Lake First Nations rented the Dewberry Ag grounds for the races as they are in the process of building their own race track and grandstand which is due to be ready next year.

It was an action-packed weekend that drew followers from far and wide. The three day top time drivers raced in the final for the Championship trailer.

BJ Carey was the leader of the first night with local Dewberry driver Dallas Dyck a close second by just 17/100ths of a second. Dyck and Carey raced again in heat 10 on Friday night and this time it was Dallas turning fastest off the second barrel stopping the clock in

1:07.58.

“It’s great racing on the home ground and the horses seem to know it a little better,” said Dyck. “I lost my grey horse for two weeks when he got kicked but since I got him back he has been a great asset.”

CPCA Judge Sonny Poitras has been coming to the Dewberry races for over twenty years.

“Racing, if it gets into your blood, you’d do anything to go racing; it’s just the way it is. There are a lot of chuckwagon champions from this area. Dewberry is the home to so many greats. I have no explanation for why so many champions come from here, but there sure are a whole lot of them,” said Poitras.

Poitras was a wagon judge at the Prairie Racing Series.

“I look for interference and penal-

ties, if an outrider will come up from behind and drift out when he shouldn’t it’s a penalty. The incident tonight when the outrider got too close to the chuckwagon and the horse broke its leg. That will be a penalty on the outrider.”

This year’s winner of the Prairie Racing Series was Ray Mitsuing.

Mitsuing was awarded the $25,000.00 four horse Championship Trailer from Desert Sales in Bassano. His sons Dale and Darren were his outriders.

In the Championship heat Sunday evening he came off the first barrel against Kris Molle and BJ Carey, Mitsuing had a good start followed by a quick turnaround before driving to victory.

While we enjoy the sunny weather and lack of rainy days, our agricultural community fear the worst about their crops and livestock.

Counties all across Alber ta have declared and will continue to declare states of agricultural disaster due to this dry hot weather; which some say is drier now than the 2002 drought and even in the last 50 years.

I don’t understand all the terminology used and how to describe the effect in scientific terms.

The last couple of weeks, we have had some pretty significant rainfalls and I saw fields bloom into pretty yellow flowers; that I have learned over the years is canola. I honestly thought to myself, gee what is all the hype about? It looks pretty good to me; it’s flowering and looks like it is growing pretty good. But I can admit, I am green as grass (no pun intended) about farming and what is beneath the pretty yellow flowers, so I am really not

one to judge that is for sure.

Upon taking the time and asking questions, I have learned a few things: like the fact that just because canola has flowered, it doesn’t mean there is any quantity of canola to harvest. I have learned that there are fields which have been seeded where absolutely nothing has grown, except a little stubble, and it is a complete loss for the farming family.

I have learned that there is a snowball effect that runs into the cattle farms; something I would never have thought of; again being green as grass. I just assumed normal grass or hay fields would still produce. Never once did I take into consideration that a cattle farmer would not have enough hay to feed their herd

I have discovered that being in the agriculture sector is a lot like playing Russian Roulette, not with a gun and a bullet, but with a seed and the weather. My admiration and appreciation for farmers and ranchers has grown significantly. It really is a gambling profession. My hat goes off to all of you for your dedication and perseverance. I know it is a gamble I would never be able to take! Bravo to all of you and I will continue to think of you in this trying time.

Full Day Of Events Planned For The Mannville Ag Fair

Beginning with the traditional pancake breakfast (Mannville Historical Society), this year’s Mannville Ag Fair promises a full line-up of events that will fortify you from breakfast to supper.

The pancake breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. in the gazebo on Main Street, followed by the parade that gets underway at 10:30 a.m.

A busy day at the Rec Centre begins at 11 a.m., including the bench show, a petting zoo, community displays and a country market.

At noon attendees can indulge their palettes as the lunch concession run by the United Church Women will start ser ving at noon in the Rec Centre Hall. A treats concession run by the Mannville School Service Trip will be selling delectables in the Rec Centre lobby while mini-donuts, sno-cones, and more will be available for purchase in the parking lot courtesy of Sticky Fingers Eats and Treats.

From noon to 2 p.m. children and adults will be able to get their faces painted or have a temporar y glitter

tattoo applied.

The always popular cake and cupcake walk will take place in the Rec Centre Hall from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.

(Baking Robots). The Robots know more than a thing or two about baking as they raised over $1,0 0 0 during Vermilion’s Canada Day celebrations selling Canadian-themed cookies.

Carnival games, a Mannville Volunteer Fire Department demo, Sprinkles the Clown, bouncy houses, psychic and intuitive readings and entertainment

by The Dynamics will also take place throughout the course of the afternoon.

Finally, the Fair will close at 4 p.m. following the Agland junior tractor pull for ages 10 and under that will take place in the arena.

A supper in the Mannville Recreational Hall will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. that will once again feature live music by the Dynamics.

Supper is $10 a plate for ages 13 and over. For children aged 3 to 12 the price is $5 per plate and children 2 and under eat for free. All the proceeds from the supper will go toward Mannville Minor Soccer.

The Scent Of A Book

My sister has a “ t h i n g ” f o r p a p e r.

N atur a ll y, t h i s includes books and she has quite an interesting collection. She does, however, have three simple rules that must be adhered to before books make her grade: No paperback romance “novels.”

Par t of her fixation with paper in general and books specifically is that paper has a definite scent that appeals to more people than you would think.

Karl Lager feld, a self- confessed paper nut, apparently once uttered the words, “I cannot live without paper!”_ He was actually the inspiration for a scent called “Paper Passion,” a perfume that

smells like the pages of a newly printed book.

So what does my sister think of the perfume? Let’s just say she prefers to get her fix the old fashioned way; having the scent of the printed page waft up naturally when she cracks open a book.

But, in the absence of a real paper smell, she definitely sees the benefits of a substitute.

In fact, she is hoping the fragrance will inspire a whole new crop of geography loving, paperback romance collectors who don’t know how to judge a book by its cover.

RSA Canada has put together a list of the top five things to ensure safer non-gas and gas barbecuing: BBQ Safety Make sure your barbecue is safely away from combustibles before lighting.

Use charcoal briquettes and charcoal lighter fluids designed for non-gas BBQs. And remember to follow the instructions on the lighter fluid container. Never add additional fluid after igniting your barbe-

cue.

Keep your grill away from combustibles when cooking – away from the home and not under eaves or awnings.

Before storing your barbecue, dispose of the ashes by soaking them in water and place them in a covered metal container.

Defective parts should only be replaced by a trained professional.

Gas BBQ Safety Make sure the lid is open to prevent gas build up when lighting the BBQ. Never ignite the grill with a match or cigarette lighter – only use the built-in electronic igniters or other devices as provided or recommended by the manufacturer.

Before each use check for leaks by

applying soap and water to all connections, hoses and the cylinder head. If bubbles form, you have a leak and must tighten the connections or replace the defective part.

When storing, make sure the tank and the grill are both turned off.

Never store a gas grill indoors with the tank attached.

“Barbecuing is a great way to host friends and family while enjoying the outdoors. Make sure that you’re keeping the above safety tips in mind when barbecuing for your friends and family,” adds Walker.

“It’s good entertainment and music. If you’re not interested in all of the artists you can explore the walking trails and there is always a campsite for those interested in camping.

“We’ve got The Amundruds that are local. The Gospel Jamboree has become an annual event for Kitscoty. While the Celebrate Kitscoty committee accepts donations, the gate will be donation only as the event is not set up as a fundraiser.

We depend on donations. Instead, it is aimed to be a day of entertainment, celebration and gospel music for everyone.

“If you want to get in on all of the entertainment and musicians, it’s a good idea to get down early and make a day of it,” said Scott.

“The jamboree has become quite a community of people because a lot of people travel to a lot of jamborees. It’s a good time to meet old friends and make new friends,” said Scott. “Some people travel quiet a distance on the circuit of jamborees that go on in the summertime in different communities. We just like to be able to offer that in our community as

well.”

The event will also provide lunch and dinner and both meals will be available for sale at the Community Hall.

Just the other day while out enjoying my garden, I heard the unmistakable sound of an aircraft throttled back losing altitude lining up to check the windsock prior to turning downwind, I’d guess to land. If you’d ever flown like I had, and then can’t anymore, you’d understand the yearning that comes from watching someone else so lucky to be up there!!

Yes, the memories come flooding back so strong and for the rest of my time out in that beautiful landscape, I thought of how wonderful it would be if I could just head to the hanger and stir my little bird to flight, one more time!!

I had a tidy tank of av gas there under the wing, and I filled all the tanks, there are three, one in the nose behind the engine, and two smaller ones in each wing. They’re all fed by gravity and needed no fuel pump.

You had a choice of which wing tank you used and the nose tank had a float and wire that protruded up through the filler cap. Told you right exactly the fuel level, you topped the wing tanks to keep

The general consensus at this year’s Minburn and District Agricultural Society’s Annual Bench Fair and Heifer Show seemed to be supporting your local Fair in good times and in not so good times.

“We didn’t have as many pens in this year’s show compared to other years,” said Ag Society Committee member Debbie Holden.

“It’s possible people are pasturing their cattle further away,” she added, referring to the drought conditions that have affected hay feed this year. “That would make it difficult to get back for the show.”

Overall, 28 pens were in this year’s heifer show and there were 235 bench fair entries in 18 different categories from 16 individuals. There were also special prize sections including largest sunflower and zucchini. Prize awards ranged between $5 to $1 depending on section and placing.

Holden entered the photography competition and won first place in two categories, with her black and white enlargement of a Ferris wheel and colour enlargement of Niagara Falls.

“I paid $18 to get my entries in and I won $38,” she said smiling. “It’s not really a money making event. It’s more about supporting your local fair,” said Holden. “If there is any leftover money it goes back to the Ag Society.”

After filling the fuel tanks, you’d check the sediment bulb and catch the drainage to see if any water was present, there very rarely ever was as the fuel was always carefully strained and filtered. A minor detail you think?

I found a perfect fit soup can that fit snugly over the filler cap and prevented any rain water from sneaking in by the fuel gauge wire. I painted it yellow like the bird and it’s still part of my walk around plan when I think of the whole preparation I went through!!

My little Taylor Craft had a continental four cylinder air cooled engine that simply didn’t burn much oil, but I checked it for level and any leaks.

There weren’t usually any, but you checked, just in case. All part of the fun.

I lovingly checked the hinges on the rudder and elevators controls, to see that all was intact and proper and also checked the ailerons, left and right to see they had proper movement and were ready to obey my slightest pressure to control the flight and let me fly in whatever maneuver I chose!!

I usually ke pt a squir t b ot tle of “Windex”, window washer fluid handy and polished the windshield carefully,

really, it was good to see clearly.

Last but not least, before I started the engine I checked the prop for any damage, like stone bruises or cracks, and then I installed the wheel chocks with ropes attached so I could remove them once I was in the cockpit after the engine was running!!

When all was set I turned the magneto to the left one to start. The left one had an impulse so the engine wouldn’t “kick back”, then I gave the primer just enough to start according to how cold or warm it was.

You learned from experience how much it took. I’d loosen the lock on the throttle and just barely crack it open and lock it again, so the engine would start at idle. One time I forgot the lock and when the engine started, the throttle being free, went wide open as soon as it started and if I hadn’t had company I’d have lost my plane. I never forgot to lock it again.

Chocks in place I walked to the front and laid my hand on the prop and pulled it through one compression.

My little bird had no electrics so had to be hand propped to start. You never bent your fingers around that prop. We were cautioned about that.

done as smartly and quick as you could and most times you were rewarded with the Continental raring to go.

Jumping into the seat, I’d check the engine oil pressure and after a brief warm up, I’d do a magneto check to see they both were okay.

One time the right one was totally dead and on checking it out found an oil seal had failed and oil had put the mag out of repair. I had to fly it to Neilburg where my mechanic made it better!!

I had a nervous trip with just one magneto I can recall.

Well, this time all was well, so I reached out and pulled my chocks out and stowed them behind the seat. All was ready to take to the appropriate end of the strip so I could take off against the wind.

I loved the thrill of pushing the throttle to the firewall and feeling the bird come to life. Very soon I could push the elevator forward to pick up the tail and using rudder to keep it straight down the strip, I’d gently ease the elevator back just so slightly and the magic moment when you were airborne soon came like a transformation of earth to sky. Never ever got used to the thrill. I was flying!!

At 18 years old, I remember sitting on a beach on the coast of the North Sea outside of Amsterdam staring, in wonder, at the ocean. It was the first one I had seen. I remember thinking even then: “I live in Canada and I’ve never seen either one of my own”. There are three to choose from, and I had yet to see one of them. It was wrong to me, and I told myself right then, that by age 30, I would see every province in Canada.

I met that goal and in doing so I fell in love with Atlantic Canada. My first trip

You may gather weak-minded followers who feel a bizarre attraction to the strange glow of your power based in egocentricity, aggression, negativity, and intimidation of anyone who challenges your authority. Fair play is foreign to you. You are blind to the destruction you cause, to the pain and suffering inflicted upon many for the sake of your own gain.

Over time, those who oppose you fall silent and your vision of the world hangs in the air like a shroud blocking the sun.

So it is in the world of a bully. He gazes out over his landscape and smiles with satisfaction at his perceived accomplishments. He clears his throat and spits when he thinks of those who dared stand up to him and were thwarted. He rewards adoring minions who willingly and without question continue to support his dictums.

He proclaims himself winner as though

he had won the ultimate championship, the title in a boxing match, through fair play. He has convinced himself that he is deserving.

Call it Karma. Call it the Natural Law. Call it Poetic Justice. Bullies never really win, despite their program of self-aggrandizement and delusions of invincibility.

True power requires the unconditional and genuine support of many, not a cult of mindless drones. It is earned, over time, through honour, respect, integrity.

Power resides in a foundation built on love for and trust in your fellow human being. The house of a bully washes away like a fantasy castle constructed in sand, as fake in its grandeur as the temporary power wielded by its loathsome former inhabitant.

Amsterdam To Atlantic Canada

here was in 2003 and as I sit and write this in April 2015, I’m back for my sixth visit. This time, I have my 21-month old daughter with me, which although she will not yet have memories of it, I know I most definitely will. This trip had a few “missions”: one was to increase my photo portfolio of Atlantic Canada as I am now a photographer (many of my old photos are on film) - (check); the other was to write (check); the other (aside from catching up with good friends here) was to somehow honor my upcoming 40th birthday and the fact that all in my life is “just as it should be”.

It’s hard to put into words why this place is as special as it is. But, many people,

especially those from here, agree. It’s mystical, charming, quaint, wild, friendly, warm and probably one of the most soulful places I’ve ever been.

I remember on my first visit to St. John’s, Newfoundland, when I was walking up the hill with my backpack and camera to Signal Hill to take photos, a woman stopped me to ask if I needed a ride. We got to talk, and I explained that it was my first time there and I was enjoying the walk and the scenery. She asked if I needed a place to stay.

I already had lodging, but I was awe-struck and warmed that someone would ask a stranger into her home.

This trip, while in Peggy’s Cove (home of the famous lighthouse), I parked near a Coffee shop to find a washroom to “freshen up” my 21-month old. A man stopped me saying renovations were on and the coffee shop wasn’t quite ready yet, but to feel free and use the house in behind it. He led me there and showed me the washroom. I changed my daughter and when I came out the man’s father was there. We talked for over 10 minutes and in that time; he shared with me how destructive Hurricane Bill was and about the loss of his wife four years before. He eyes moistened telling me about how they were married for 57 years. I had a letter written and mailed to “John” telling him how much I enjoyed meeting him before I flew home. “We like pen pals”, I wrote.

Back in 2009, I stayed in Mahone Bay with a good friend and lobster fisherman (Garnet) and his wife. That trip, I met his family (a daughter and son), stayed at his cabin (or, here known as “camp”), ate my first raw scallop, took a stroll in a lobster fishing boat, took in a traditional east coast “fish fry”, and got to experience Hurricane Bill (which they quickly renamed to “Hurricane Billi”). By the end of that trip, Garnet and his wife had a previously planned trip out of province, but insisted I stay at their home (with a vehicle, no less)

until my flight left for home a day later. I remember driving around Mahone Bay and waving at people I ran into because I now knew them. I just remember so many moments during that trip - realizing that I was so lucky and I was making memories I would never, ever forget. Not to mention: Garnet’s daughter and I (now and a 1/2 years later) refer to each other as “sisters”.

This trip, I stayed a short drive away in a vacation rental with my daughter (simply for child-friendly-ness) but, had many visits with these same old friends.

I met Garnet originally while working at a fishing lodge in the Northwest Territories in 2005. I remember appreciating that experience too, knowing full well that I was in a part of the country many Canadians would never see. I’ve heard many say that of the east, as well. I just knew, though, on my first trip 12 years ago that Atlantic Canada touched me, and it wouldn’t soon let go.

It still hasn’t - and, I’m convinced it never will.

A traditional rice pudding is a very easy, economical, one pot desert to make. Toss the raisins into your pot with the raw rice and they will be steamed and softened at the same time as you cook your rice.

If you want a snowy white pudding use white rice and white sugar. If you want a lovely caramel flavour then use brown rice with your choice of brown sugar. Coconut sugar is a fairly new type of brown sugar that is available in health food stores. The benefit of coconut sugar is in that it does not raise blood sugar as quickly as other sweeteners, and it contains some nutrients such as iron, zinc, calcium, potas-

Inulin fiber, also found in raisins, feeds the good bacteria in the gut. This pudding can also be sweetened with honey or maple syrup. If you sweeten the pudding with unpasteurized honey, stir it in after the pudding has cooled down, to preserve the beneficial natural enzymes in the honey.

Raisins also have lots of health benefits; they contain powerful antioxidants to help prevent cancer and skin aging.

These antioxidants help to protect your eyes and vision. The fiber in raisins is beneficial to the digestive system.

Raisins add natural sweetness to this pudding.

Short grain rice produces a creamy pudding, but you can also use medium grain, converted rice or long grain rice. A

word of caution, do not use sticky rice for pudding, or you will have goo instead of pudding.

When selecting rice, converted rice has more nutrients than plain white rice, but brown rice is the most nutritious.

It is high in manganese, selenium and magnesium. Brown rice, and other whole grains reduce the risk of heart disease and metabolic syndrome. I recently tasted a rice pudding, at The Spice Hut, in downtown Lloydminster that was perfectly flavoured with the exotic spice cardamom and it was really quite amazing. You can use this basic recipe to design your own signature rice pudding.

In the same pot stir in the milk, the sugar and vanilla. Simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally for 5 minutes as the milk is being absorbed into the rice, and then stirring in the cream little by little at the end. Serve warm or cold. If you want a white rice pudding then use a white rice and white sugar and omit the spice. If you use the brown rice and the coconut sugar or brown sugar, you will have a light, caramel flavour.

Lawn Tractor Safety

Summer lawn care maintenance is often a family affair. Mowing the lawn is one of the first chores assigned to kids of the right age. A lawn tractor can be a handy tool to keep your yard looking great and is always fun to operate, but as with any tool, you must respect its power and use caution during operation.

For lawn tractors, these precautions are especially critical if children are in the area. You can severely injure a child with the riding mower - in forward or reverse - with the blades engaged, or when objects are hit and thrown by the spinning blades.

At any age, the operator using the tractor needs to be familiar with safety guidelines to ensure a safe experience.

guidelines for safe tractor use: Never give rides. A child may fall off the mower and into the spinning blades.

Giving rides may also cause the child to be attracted to the mower, and the child may later approach without being seen.

Use ex treme caution in reverse.

Keep alert for anyone who may enter the mowing area. Always look down and behind the mower before and while backing up.

Know where the kids are. Keep kids away from the mowing area. Have adult supervision to prevent them from approaching the mower before you have finished. Stop mowing if a child approaches the mowing area.

Have you ever had itchy red spots on your legs after wading in a lake during the summer? Maybe you’ve noticed red rash covering the legs of children and other beach goers.

This rash, called swimmer’s itch, is a common condition caused by an allergic reaction to parasites that live in the water. Swimmer’s itch occurs in both fresh and salt waters around the world and Alberta is no exception.

Since May 2015, thirty of Alberta’s lakes have had reports of swimmer’s itch, including Pigeon Lake, Sylvan Lake, Wabamun Lake, Lake Bonavista, Lac St. Anne and Buck Lake.

It is hard to imagine some one’s deep psychological pain would cause them to end their lives, but 800,000 deaths are registered around the world and many deaths are not registered because of the stigma and shame surrounding suicide deaths.

Suicide death not only is devastating to a family but the ripple effect of that loss effects friends, communit y and societ y, in general. There are so many emotions that the loved ones are experiencing, such as anger, guilt, disbelief, self-blame. The loved ones may feel that they cannot share the overwhelming feelings with anyone else and therefore reaching out to those who have lost someone to suicide is important. Would you be that neighbour and friend?

Being pro-active to those bereaved with the of fering of a sympathetic, non-judgemental ear can make all the difference. Giving them a time to talk about their loss, in their own time, on their own terms can be a precious gift. Allowing the conversation can be the first step of healing and moving for ward. The conversation may be difficult but appreciated.

Vermilion River Watershed Educational Forum

has received some grants, which are specifically to be spent within the Vermilion River Watershed.

The forum is geared towards anyone who is a resident of the Vermilion River area. The forum aims to inform and educate people about wetlands and riparian areas and the opportunities there are for restoring them,” added O’Shaughnessy.

O’Shaughnessy will present on the topic, ‘The life and times of the Vermilion Watershed’, which is a look at human history in the environment.

Watershed committee member Owen Nelsen said last week that the event is open to the public.

“Best Management Practices (BMPs) can reduce the pollution of water within watersheds and need to be addressed to let people know that there is funding available,” said Nelsen.

The Vermilion Watershed Alliance is holding an educational forum on Wednesday, August 12 from 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. at Lakeland College in Vermilion.

In partnership with the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance, Vermilion will present this forum to introduce the upcoming wetland and riparian areas restoration and enhancement projects in the Vermilion River watershed.

Topics will include functions and values of wetlands and riparian areas, local restoration examples, management practices, policies and regulations.

“The forum will raise topics about water quality from a report done in the Vermilion River area. It is open to everyone,” said Riparian specialist Kerri O’Shaughnessy.

T h e Ver m ili o n R i ver Water s h e d Management Project (VRWM Project) is a four-year (April 2014 to March 2018) initiative led by local watershed stakeholders.

It is guided by municipal representatives; members include representatives from five rural and three urban municipalities, provincial and federal governments, conser vation organizations, academia, industry, students and a member at large.

Watershed management plans must support the achievement of the three ‘Water for Life goals’ Safe, secure drinking water supply, healthy aquatic ecosystems and reliable quality water supplies for a sustainable economy.

“The Nor th Saskatchewan River watershed in Alberta stretches across Central Alberta from the Rocky Mountains in the west, to the border with the province of Saskatchewan in the east.

B r i t i s h S o c c e r C a m p D i r e c t o r, Tim De Groote and Irish Coach Alex O’Donoghue were in Vermilion the week of Aug. 3 to Aug. 7 teaching Canadian kids European soccer skills through a program with Challenger Sports.

“There hasn’t been a time since the age of three I haven’t had a soccer ball with me,” said O’Donoghue.

De Groote has been playing soccer from the age of 5 and has played semi-pro “football” in Belgium, while O’Donoghue will play for his local team, Bandon AFC in Cork, upon his return to

“I think we bring a passion to the game that is just starting to catch on here,” said O’Donoghue.

The five day camp catered to kids ranging in ages from 3 to 16 and offered courses from one and a half hours in length to half and full days.

“We see all levels of play,” said De Groote. “We’re teaching skills but we always do it with games. It ’s about having fun.”

“We vary the games to match the kids’ level of play,” said O’Donoghue.

One of the “games” employed was a drill called rondo which teaches various skills at one time.

“It works everything. And these players are well able for it. It teaches passing, keeping your head up, first touch, anticipation and thinking fast,” added O’Donoghue.

“You need to anticipate,” said De Groote. “If you receive the ball and then start thinking about where it should go, it’s already too late.”

“They think it’s a game, but they’re learning skills,” he added.

De Groote and O’Donoghue said they were impressed with the players

in Vermilion.

“Some have already progressed to the next level,” added O’Donoghue.

De Groote said the facilities were great as well; the fields, equipment provided and having access to a shelter during the camp.

“Our host families are amazing too,” said O’Donoghue.

The British So c cer invasion will continue. The next stop on the tour will be Yellowknife.

“We get to work and travel,” said De Groote. “We’re gaining a lot of experience, teaching kids about soccer, and working with coaches from different countries. I love it,” added De Groote.

Step Back In History At Paradise Valley’s Climb Thru Time Museum

This summer the Climb Thru Time museum in Paradise Valley hosted visitors from as far away as New Zealand, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Switzerland and the States as well as visitors from all across Canada.

The unique thing about this museum is that it is built inside an old restored grain elevator. Grain elevators were once prairie icons and a visual symbol of western Canada.

The ground floor of the museum curves around and upwards in a circular motion through the grain tower moving through decades of history as it progresses upwards.

The climb starts with Alberta’s earliest history from the Natives to the earliest settlers and on to the first and second World Wars, upwards to the present day.

Numerous fascinating artifacts and works of art depict history from the birth of agriculture and rural life in western Canada. From the chain men who measured out the land of the Great Canadian West, to the fur traders. The museum presents original artifacts, paintings and displays which bring the past to life, from the earliest sod shacks and tar paper shack dwellings.

Museum Vice President and volunteer Don Deaville is an excellent tour guide with personal knowledge and insight into times gone by.

“The grain elevator was the heartbeat

of the community. The farming community came to town and supported the town and the grain elevator kept the whole communit y going. Ever yone brought their grain here and socialized,” said Museum volunteer Donna Brown.

“A lot of poker was played on the table and a lot of money was left right there on the table,” added Deaville.

Grain elevators were a symbol of a community’s economic viability and a region’s agricultural strength; there numbered as many as 5,758 in 1933.

Elevators have dominated the prairie landscape for more than a century.

Climb Thru Time museum depicts a different way of life. It tells the story of how the earliest settlers in Canada survived after they arrived in Canada and of how resourceful they were. “ People bac k then k new how to survive better; people today are more reliant on their modern devices like mobile phones, freezers and trucks. If the power goes out, people don’t know how to survive like they did back then,” said Deaville.

Many artifacts were donated to the museum over the years; some items include witching sticks and ice saws.

“Nothing was wasted,” said Brown telling of how items from the grocery store like empty maple syrup tins were never thrown out but reused as children’s lunch boxes or for berry picking.

“In the last century there was more change than we will ever see again,”

said Brown. “Technology is so advanced now and it will become more advanced.”

Climb Thru Time Museum is run by the Paradise Valley Historical Society and was officially opened on June 24 1995, 20 years ago this year.

Local schools take children for visual history lessons each year.

“You see something new every time you take the tour,” added Brown.

The museum is open every summer from June 1st until the end of August from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The museum is currently running a fundraiser raffle with a four prize draw.

Ticket prices are $10 each and can be purchased at the UFA in Vermilion before August 30th.

Funds raised go towards paying off the museum’s maintenance bill of $96,000 for exterior painting and the cost of new shingles.

SALUTING OUR AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY Local Farmers Voice Their Concerns About Drought Damage

All across the province last week many counties declared a state of agricultural disaster, following the hot and dry weather conditions, stymied crop growth has driven up hay and grain prices and is forcing producers to sell off their livestock.

“It’s the worst drought I’ve seen since 2002,” said UFA Manager Jack Rehill.

“I have sold off 30 percent of my herd due to the drought because I just don’t think I’ll have enough hay,” said cow/ calf farmer Jim Storch from south of Mannville. “The hay needed rain earlier; it just hasn’t had the production it should have. It’s too early to tell if the quality might be good now and the quantity is down,” said Storch.

Vermilion cow/calf and grain farmer Gary Moses also believes it is the worst drought he has seen in years.

“In the cereal crops and the germination on the canola is very uneven. Now we have things in bloom that should have been in bloom two/three weeks ago. On the cereals a yield gets determined in the first two weeks of June, which was very dry so the crops are short and their heads are small.

“There is literally no hay. With the recent rains the pastures have helped.

We took the hay land that we normally make hay from and now we’re pasturing

it instead so that leaves us with no hay.

“The rains have been very spotty and uneven in different areas, if you were lucky enough to get rain that helps, but lots of people didn’t,” said Moses.

The County of Vermilion River Council passed a motion on July 28, declaring a State of Agricultural Disaster, “due to the extreme drought conditions.”

“It’s an extreme situation that we have in our area. Currently there is an exception shortage of hay in our area and cattle feed,” said County of Vermilion River Reeve Daryl Watt.

“That could get worse as we go forward depending on rain. We have two big problems, we have very poor crops and we have very low feed supplies. The price of feed is extremely high right now. I have been in discussions with AFSC and our local MLA Dr. Starke to try and get the programs (AgriStability and crop insurance) that are in place to try and work in a better manner and serve us better.”

“It’s going to make a huge difference to the amount of money that there is in our community. It’s just a bad situation all around,” added Reeve Daryl Watt.

“The tax break is if you sell more than 15 per cent of your basic livestock herd then you can defer some of that money into your next tax year,” said Watt.

As of the 2011 Federal Census, there are 1,029 farms and 1,363,640 acres of

farmable and hay land within the County of Vermilion River.

Norm Gueutal, AFSC team coordinator said he has never seen a year where there was so much variance.

“The worst year I have seen was 2002, it was the worst in my opinion. We learned at that time there are alternative methods of feeding. We don’t have to just rely on hay and this year there is still some grain bulk out there,” said Gueutal.

“On the grain side their yields are not

going to be what they have been over the last three years unless you were lucky enough to be under the rain cloud.

“We try to do things as quickly as possible. We have people from here going out on ride along on assessments.

There are options for people with crop insurance and we try and get money available to them as quickly as possible.

There are AgriStability and AgriInvest programs also available to farmers,” said Gueutal.

The Centre for Sustainable Innovation (CSI) at Lakeland College hosted its second crop research field tour on Monday, July 27 that included, a winter wheat field demonstration, wheat input intensity trials, a novel crop trial presentation (Jerusalem artichoke) and field scouting with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) information session.

In the winter wheat demonstration Janine Paley, a winter wheat agronomist with Ducks Unlimited, discussed the benefits of growing a winter wheat crop, including higher yields and an increased return on investment (ROI) compared to spring wheat.

Local Tofield farmer Ken Stauffer wasn’t convinced.

“I don’t see it,” he said.

Kent Erickson, the Chairman of the Alberta Wheat Commission said, “We are working on the marketing part.”

Erickson compared it to the chicken and egg dilemma.

“We are targeting the Asian market,” but added that “a consistent supply of wheat would need to be provided.”

In the wheat input intensity trials, three approaches were tried: medium, high and maximum intensity applications of fertilizer, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and nutrients on three different plots on the student managed farms as well as three other test groups that are replicating this research to obtain an accurate range for the region’s conditions. For instance, an American product called Environmentally Smart Nitrogen (ESN), which allows for a slow release of nitrogen fertilizer, was applied to the plots.

The release of ESN is triggered by temperature and moisture.

“A drought at the start of the growing season is not the best case scenario for this product,” said Hammermeister.

A recent soil sample taken by the College has been flagged as a concern as there appears to be a correlation between nitrogen release and aluminum in the soil.

There is a question as to whether fertilizer can be causing extra drought stress said Hammermeister.

Bales, particularly round bales, can be unstable while being transported on flatbeds or stacked on hilly or uneven ground. Workers should be aware of the potential for falling bales and take precautions to avoid being crushed by transported or stored bales.

Double-check and make sure that any attachments or hydraulics on tractors and forklifts are secure, well-fitted and specific to that piece of equipment and the job required,” says Lubeck. “Equipment failure at best adds time and effort to the job; at its worst someone could be severely injured or killed.”

“When moving round bales with tractors, loaders or forklifts, be sure to carry the bales as low to the ground as possible,” says Lubeck. “This is particularly important when working with smaller or mid-sized equipment as the heavy bales raise the centre of gravity. If needed, make sure that sufficient counterweights have been added to stabilize the vehicle.”

“Planning for safety during hay hauling and storage is just as important as when baling the hay,” says Lubeck.

“Take the time to ensure workers are not at risk and you can all enjoy a healthy fall season.”

Hail Storms And Crop Damage

Recent hailstorms in parts of Alberta have decimated some crops, prompting producers to look at their options.

“In a lot of cases, the crop leaves were stripped away completely and stalks are only four to six inches tall,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Stettler. “ In these cases, this material is completely written off. However, if the crop was seeded a little later, and the head was just emerging out of the boot, there might be a chance for some second growth.”

Crops that were damaged but not destroyed may be cut for greenfeed, or cattle may graze what remains. However, storm damage to crops can result in problems with nitrate accumulations, especially if the crops were heavily fertilized in the spring to optimize yield.

“It takes about four days after a storm for nitrates to accumulate to peak levels in hail damaged crops. If the plants are recovering from injury, at about two weeks after the storm the nitrates levels will return to normal and the forage should be safe to feed.”

“If you can see that the leaves are drying off and you are losing yield and quality, then you need to get in and cut the crop for silage or put it up as greenfeed. In that case, it’s essential that it is tested for nitrates and that the levels are

known before any of it is used as feed.”

“Over the past three or four years, we’ve found that nitrates aren’t as serious a problem as was once thought.

However, the proviso is that you have to gradually adjust the animals to these high nitrate feeds.”

Yaremcio recommends putting the herd out to feed for a couple of hours in the afternoon for the first three to four days, and then for three to four hours the next few days. After ten days of this gradual increase, cattle can be left out to graze continuously.

“Producers should also supplement the cows through a mineral program.

When switching from a regular pasture to hailed out material, one thing that will likely be low is magnesium. You’ll probably want a product with two to five per cent magnesium in it. A 1-1 or 2-1 mineral will work fine as long as it has the extra magnesium to prevent downer cows.”

Now is a good time to secure harvest fuel needs.

“Harvest is the highest fuel demanding time of the year,” says Todd BergenHenengouwen, project assistant Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Edmonton. “As such, it’s a good idea to secure your diesel fuel supply just in case there is a fuel shortage.”

Fuel shortages did occur in 2008 and 2013. “Information from the Alberta Economic Development Authority shows that between 2005 and 2010 there were more than 20 unscheduled upgrader outages. While not all outages led to a shortage, there is always a possibility one can result.”

Bergen-Henengouwen says there has been recent unexpected maintenance work at the Scotford Manufacturing Centre northeast of Fort Saskatchewan. “ T h i s m a i nte n an c e h a s l ef t t h e company looking for other sources of fuel for its customers. Some Shell locations have been struggling to find fuel over the last few weeks, while others have been unaffected. It’s uncertain how long this outage will last, and no indication if a diesel shortage will occur or not.”

Bergen-Henengouwen says fuel prices in the Edmonton region are lower this year than last.

“Last year at the end of July, diesel fuel was at about $1.20 per litre, while this year it’s closer to 97 cents per litre. This means if you spent $50,000 on fuel over last year, you’d be spending $10,000 less this year for fuel.”

“Most break-ins occur over the winter when cottages are unattended for several months and there are fewer people around to witness suspicious behavior,” explained De Luca. “There are several steps you can take to deter burglars and reduce the risk that your cottage will be targeted since most burglaries are committed by amateurs. A few simple security precautions will discourage most of them.”

The following ADT home protection checklist can help you plan important safety measures to help keep your cottage or summer home safe and damage-free during the winter: 1. Did you burglar-proof your cottage by boarding all windows and securing all openings to deter thieves?

2. Did you take your more valuable possessions home with you so not to entice burglars?

3. Is your boat stored in an enclosed and locked building?

4. Did you turn off the water-main and unplug the major appliances as an added precaution against frozen pipes bursting?

Seeding The Future Of Your Farm

All business owners need to constantly be thinking about the next steps for their venture. This not only means looking into innovation and staying power, but also considering and finding a successor to take over.

According to the 2015 Canadian Agricultural Outlook Survey, one-third of respondents indicate that they will need to make ownership changes within the coming years, with 62% of those expecting to transfer to family members or partners. Surprisingly, only 30% of these farm owners are doing any formal succession planning.

“We know farmers are so busy with their day-to-day work that it can be difficult to imagine a day when they won’t be farming,” says Gwen Paddock, national director of agriculture at RBC. “But we also know that having a well thought-out succession plan will help with a seamless transition, and will provide the means for today’s farmers to enjoy their retirement.”

To help prepare a succession plan Paddock suggests to: • Plan ahead: Begin planning at least five years in advance of when you think you might sell your farm. This will help to better handle any bumps along the way.

• Share your plan: Involve key family members or partners - especially those you are considering passing the farm to - and do so early during planning.

• Stay objective: While passing on the farm to family is a nice idea, it›s not without challenges. For instance, does the successor have the right skills and drive to take over? How will other workers react? Be prepared to answer these questions.

• Seek out experts: Financial advisors and accountants have expertise that can be invaluable during the planning process.

Not only will they help you stay objective, but they will also guide you through topics such as taxes and wills.

Questions Before Going To The Bank

Before going to the bank to talk loans, it’s important to consider the implications and ramifications.

“Farming is a capital intensive business,” says Rick Dehod, farm financial specialist, Agriculture and Forestry, Edmonton. “In order to meet the goals of the business, most farms will lever their equity so that they can manage their businesses to provide their families with a reasonable standard of living. They also seek to increase their equity so that they’re better able to manage risk. It’s the use of business equity in efficient manner that’ll allow the farm business to access credit from the bank.”

Dehod says there are five questions producers should be able to answer to themselves and to their business partners before seeking financing.

What are you going to do with the money?

“First off, do you have a clear plan of what you are going to do with the money?

Is it for operating, is it to buy land (how many acres, what buildings) or machinery (new or used)? How does this relate back to your business plan and overall farm investment strategy? Is your goal to expand, stay current with evolving technology, or just continue to operate? Is it a business decision or an emotional decision? Are your business partners in agreement? Does the potential return on equity by levering borrowed capital meet your goals and objectives?”

How much do you want?

Dehod says it’s important to decide how much cash and how much borrowed money is needed. “Using all your cash will

impact your farm’s liquidity and possibly its ability to meet all of your commitments as they come due. Large payments on borrowed capital can affect your working capital position and your ability to manage risk.

How much of your current equity are you willing to put at risk?”

How long do you want the money for?

“Look at the loan amortization length, and resulting loan payments to see if the payments meet your cash flow and your ownership goals. A longer loan amortization with a prepayment privilege may provide less stress on cash flow should margins tighten. Agriculture markets are cyclical.”

How are you going to repay the money?

Can the farm service the additional debt? “Your past income and expenses is a good benchmark to determine your future repayment ability,” says Dehod.

“Using this as a base, you can do a projection of what your future income and expenses will be and what your debt service requirement can be. Doing a sensitivity analysis by decreasing your income 10 per cent and increasing your expenses by 10 per cent will give you an indication of your repayment risk and your ability to make your payments, should things go not as planned.”

What are the alternative sources of repayment in the event of something going wrong?

“Life happens. People have accidents or illnesses that make them unable to manage their farms on a timely basis.

People divorce. This is a stressful issue not only on the focus of managing the

Vermilion Business Blowout Sale

The 7th annual Business Blowout Sale will take place this year at the Elks Hall on Thursday, September 17th.

Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce Office Manager Michelle Feist said the concept of this year’s business blowout event is to give all businesses an affordable opportunity to clear out stock and promote business.

“We are really encouraging people who want to get traffic through their s to r e fr o n t to h ave a b o o t h. I t ’s a chance for businesses to show Vermilion what they are all about.

“We are open to all kinds of busines ses, anyone who want s to put their stuff on sale and clear out their summer stock or old stock,” said coordinator Feist. “ We have had a lot of interest so far and some places in Lloydminister said they are waiting to see how their

summer sales go,” added Feist.

The cost of renting a booth is $60.

If businesses are in need of a second table, it can be rented for an additional charge of $10 per table. “ We want it to be af fordable for everyone. If you want to book more than one booth that is also an option.

Businesses can decide what merchandise they want to promote or blowout.

“It’s also a good networking event and it helps to get your name out there,” said Feist.

This event is overall focused on the promotion of local and area businesses. It is not a trade show. The doors to the event open to the public at noon to 8 p.m.

“We will update the list of exhibitors as they register. If you want to be an exhibitor at this truly awesome sale just fill out the registration form and send it to the Chamber office.”
