MacMillan added that the number of participants this year was about 57, which is up from last year. This year’s Hi Point Rifle winner, Jeff Frazier, came all the way from Tennessee to compete in Vermilion.

This year’s qualifying shoots were reduced from three days to two, before the finals that took place on Saturday, July 25.

“It was excellent. We did get to see some of the Fair,” said MacMillan.

The Vermilion Fair marked the midway point for the Summer Saddle Series.

Tax Fraud Scam Update

Vermilion RCMP Submitted The following is the submitted RCMP report as it appeared in our July 20th issue.

The Vermilion Voice received a phone call on July 28th from a local citizen stating that her mother received a phone call but directed the person to call her daughter. It was this kind of scam.

Please be sure to let your family members know of this scam and not to be fooled.

According to the daughter the person is very aggressive and it is very hard to even get off the phone.

Tax Fraud Scam

There have been several reported incidents where residents of Vermilion and surrounding areas have been receiving calls from scammers claiming to be from “Revenue Canada” and asking for payment for “back tax”. The scammers request payment be made to an individual rather than the agency. Often times the caller will advise that a warrant is going to be issued for their arrest if payment is not made, be aware this is a scam, also do not try to call back the number after you hang up.

Here is some further information from the Canadian Anit-Fraud Centre website on how to protect yourself from these types of scams.

Tax Scams It is tax time again and fraudsters will use this opportunity to attempt to scam consumers and businesses out of their hard earned money.

The most common approach fraudsters’ use is impersonating the real Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Whether by telephone or by email, the pitch involves one of two variations. The fraudsters are phishing for identification or asking that outstanding taxes by paid by a money service business or by prepaid debit / credit cards.

There is notification by phone or email from the “CRA” claiming there is a refund pending.

In order for the recipient to receive the refund they must provide personal information.

Consumers and businesses receive a notification by phone or email that they owe “back taxes” as the result of an audit. The payment must be made immediately to avoid a fine or the recipient is told there is an outstanding warrant that can be avoided if the payment is made promptly. In many cases, individuals

are told they will be deported if the taxes are not paid right away.

Warning sign(s) - How to protect yourself Do not take immediate action. Verify that what you are being told is the truth.

Ask yourself why the CRA would be asking for personal information over the phone or e-mail that they likely already have on file for you as a taxpayer.

Contact the CRA to confirm that you in fact owe back taxes, or are entitled to a refund, before providing any personal or banking information.

Leon Benoit Announces $128,230 Funding For Kitscoty Walking Trails

Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, made a funding announcement at the Village Office in Kitscoty on July 28.

“In support of improved community infrastructure in Vegreville-Wainwright and as part of the Government of Canada’s celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Confederation, $128,230 will be allocated to the Village of Kitscoty for the upgrade and extension of the walking trails and to install new playground equipment in the Village of Kitscoty,” announced Benoit.

Benoit announced the funding of $388,970 for six projects aimed to benefit eastern Alberta under the Government of

Canada’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

In Economic Action Plan 2015, the Government of Canada announced further support for communities with the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

“Facilities such as Kitscoty’s walking trails are important to the residents of Kitscoty and are important to keeping people healthier.”

Our government’s top priority is the economy, its jobs and growth that lead to long term prosperity.”

The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program aims to help fund renovations, expansions and rehabilitations to existing infrastructure that provides community and cultural benefits for the

public.

Fo ll owin g hi s re c e nt ret ire m e nt announcement, Benoit said “I will step back from politics but I won’t isolate myself, I may offer advice to some of the local campaigners if they ask for it.

I will be putting more time into managing my farms and I’m going to relax for a while.”

With oil prices currently down due to an oversaturated market; Benoit said he can’t see what is going to turn the low oil prices around.

“I was in Saudi Arabia last April and when we met with the oil group they made it clear that they weren’t going to do what they have always done in times of low prices and that is cut back and be the only OPEC country to cut back in produc-

tion. They said they are not going to do it anymore and why would they, they have a 35 billion dollar deficit in Saudi Arabia.“

Should He Or Shouldn’t He Be Extradited

This past week, and well every week, it seems l a t e l y, y o u h e a r more negative conversations then

positive ones.

We have had a string of break ins and vandalism going on in our quiet little town; which is something I find rather disturbing. I have my thoughts on what could be behind it all, but at this point I chose to keep those to myself as I do not have valid proof to back them up and I am not one to speak without some validity to it.

Also this week if you watch the news, or any form of social media, one of the biggest topics out there is the death of

Cecil the Lion.

I will admit, I am a tree hugger, and very rarely even kill a spider, so it would be common knowledge that my hearing of such a tremendously horrible act would bother me immensely.

According to all the news coverage on the kill of Cecil the Lion, Dr. Walter Palmer, along with his so called “professional hunting guides,” lured the animal from the national park with a dead animal tied to their vehicle, giving Palmer a chance to shoot Cecil with a crossbow. Forty hours later Palmer shot the lion dead with his gun.

Palmer, the dentist from Minneapolis, claims he didn’t know the hunt was illegal; and while I am one to usually give someone the benefit of the doubt, I can’t in right conscious sit here and convict the man without hearing every

inch of the story. I do, however, find it fairly suspicious that a man who is so well known for his hunts wasn’t smart enough to figure it out or at least make sure his professional hunting guides were on the up and up and true professionals with proper permits.

Another fact which makes me lean more toward him knowing that the hunt was illegal is the fact that back in 2008 Palmer pleaded guilty to making false statements to federal officials regarding a black bear kill he was involved in, in Wisconsin. Seems to me this guy has a history of doing things he shouldn’t.

So what does that mean for Dr. Walter Palmer? Well in not so many words he is probably one of the most hated men alive at the moment, plus Zimbabwe is seeking extradition so he can be held accountable for his illegal action.

I guess my question here is should he be extradited back to Zimbabwe to face poaching charges? My thought is everyone should be held accountable for their actions.

As the saying goes “ever y action causes a reaction” and this time it isn’t looking so great for Mr. Palmer. Maybe he should have thought before he acted.

County Declares State Of Agricultural Disaster

County of Vermilion River Submitted

The County of Vermilion River Council has passed a motion at the July 28, 2015 Council Meeting declaring a State of Agricultural Disaster due to the extreme drought conditions that are affecting our farmers.

“The long term impact of this years’ drought will be widespread across the County,” said Reeve Daryl Watt. “Council is here to support our agricultural community by declaring a state of agricultural disaster, and gaining exposure with other levels of government as to these severe conditions.”

Weather stations within the County of Vermilion River indicate substantially lower rainfall to date during the 2015 growing season, particularly in the east-

ern half of the county.

On average the County has seen just 112 mm of precipitation since April (in 2014, from April to September the average was 330 mm).

“We are seeing feed and pasture yields already reduced by well over 50%. This is a serious concern for our livestock producers.” said Murray King, Councillor and Agriculture Services Board Chair.

It is anticipated that there will be a herd culling to adjust livestock numbers to the feed supplies available. If agriculture recovery support is available, the County wants its producers to be eligible. As of the 2011 Federal Census, there are 1,029 farms and 1,363,640 acres of farmableand hay land within the County of Vermilion River.

The County of Vermilion River will

notify provincial and federal government officials of the State of Agricultural Disaster and request some safety net programs be reviewed.

The four points we are drawing attention to are: 1. The variable amounts of rainfall received in our County ranging from approximately 30% of long term average to near normal.

2. Our recommendation that 2015 crop yields be excluded from the crop insurance longterm average for individual producers.

3. Our recommendation that the yield determination methodology for extremely late emerging annual crops be reviewed to enable these crops to be salvaged for livestock feed while they still have adequate nutritional value.

Declaration Of State Of Agricultural Disaster

County Of Two Hills Submitted

On July 29, 2015 the County of Two Hills Council unanimously declared a state of Agricultural disaster for the County of Two Hills No. 21. This declaration was made to call attention to the severe drought conditions seen throughout the County, although some areas have recently received significant rain, with the lack of moisture in some areas this resulted in little to no hay, silage or pasture. The insignificant rainfall received across the County has left crops stunted.

Producers are encouraged to consult AFSC or visit their website for updated information on assistance programs.

The Two Hills County Council issued this declaration of Agricultural Disaster to encourage the Provincial and Federal Governments to initiate necessary programs that may provide relief to producers. In the past, such relief has varied from income tax deferral programs

to Farm Disaster Assistance programs that could assist with such matters as the emergency supply of cattle feed.

County declares State of Agricultural DisasterMotion: County of Two Hills Council declares a local State of Agricultural Disaster due to the hardship weather conditions and drought have placed on local farmers.

The County of Two Hills will notify Provincial and Federal Governments of the State of Agricultural Disaster and request a disaster recovery program be set up to address this agricultural disaster. Well folks, we are winding down July so soon, August is upon us, and July did seem to sneak by me, so I got to make August count in the way of outdoor adventures in the summer mode.

September, one of my most favorite months, will be filled with outdoor

adventures on almost every day of the month. August sneaks by me also, as I get so busy before the September bow hunting opening.

Around The Campfire

So I am taking the first nine days of August off… kinna, I do have stuff at home I have to do, including getting the truck ready for September, but I will have time to fish, gold pan, scout and set tree stands, and do some Miss Pickle training.

Miss Pickles, my pup, having been down for the last several weeks with her surgery and strict orders of no swimming in the duck pond or any “rough housing” has been bored Not that she skipped a beat on the roughhousing part…however earlier this week she had all her office supplies removed from her….the surgery staples, and is doing very well all healed up so now we can get active once again.

I can take her once again for her runs; I was scared to move the quad for the last several weeks as she wanted to go for her runs, but I didn’t want her to hurt herself, rip out staples and just heal.

Last evening she got to go for her run. I took the quad out and I swear she is even faster now, as we ran the trails in the “North 40 bush”, I noticed the Saskatoon bushes were full ripe and hanging with berries.

Growing up in Alberta’s North, Blueberries were hands down my most favorite fruit and as a youngster would pick buckets of them. I would naturally eat one bucket for every two I picked.

I remember blueberr y breads, pancakes, mixed in cereals, jams and the list goes on, I would spend a lot of time to pick lots just to devour my share, my most favourite food for life!

Then I remember so well moving to central Alberta in my late teens early 20’s, newly married with a family, enjoying a family adventure along the Red Deer River and discovering Saskatoon berry bushes.

I was in shock…OMG these things

were even more delicious than blueberries if that was possible, easier to pick without bending over all day, on dry land instead of muskeg swamp; the perfect berry.

As much as I still love blueberries, Saskatoon’s have to be my favourite, I can eat them by the truckload, and my wife Roxanne makes a thin Saskatoon cake that is to die for!

We used to spend the entire day down by the Red Deer River, where I have a parcel of land right along the river where I kept all my sled dogs, so I would do chores and pick Saskatoon berries all day long.

As a matter of fact I am devouring a big bowl half Cheerios, half Saskatoon berries, and milk as I write this. Perfect tasty breakfast, the rest will be for my favorite…Roxanne’s Saskatoon cake.

As I was picking Saskatoon’s last night, complete with purple hands and lips, singing “one for me…two for the bucket” I couldn’t help think how Saskatoon’s and blueberries would have been such a godsend for the early natives and pioneers.

As a youngster growing up with natives as neighbours and friends I remember staying at family friends and eating native bread called “bannock” cooked in a skillet. So simple, but so good. Then add blueberries…

This was outstanding flavour bursting food; not a sugar filled pastry like most today. Canada’s natives had a bread called Pemmican, a truly staple bread that had dried buffalo or moose meat mixed into it, and when available dried blueberries or Saskatoon berries were added.

The pemmican, invented by North American natives peoples, powered not only them but our earliest settlers and pioneers. A delicious dried bread that

lasted a very long time and was very tasty and nutritious.

It could be eaten in many ways, and with many dishes, even add water and make into a ready-made stew. Buried it would last forever. In fact, in archaeology digs, they still uncover buried pemmican.

Tast y things aside and speaking of my dog team, looks like I am going to have a dog team once again. Well I guess if you count Miss Pickles and myself as a “team”…I found the neatest dog sled ever.

Canadian - made, just like my racing style sled when I had the big team, lightweight, super flexible and strong, complete with treated weaved rawhide seat back…even folds down to seat level.

I have the harness and set ready to go now that she is healed, so I will get her used to pulling the sled, empty of course, on grass, and teach her sled commands.

Since she is the entire team including lead dog she will have to know the commands, “HAW” means turn LEFT!… ”GEE” means turn RIGHT!...and WHOA means- please stop…ha ha.

Will keep you updated on that. All in all I am going to enjoy myself before the big last minute bowhunter rush in the shop; going to squeeze as many outdoor adventures in before September.

Franklin Wolters Columnist The good book tells us that man has been given stewardship of all creation on Earth!! We were given you’d say, all the resources and bounty of this planet and it was our duty to manage them in a “CAREFUL” way. You’d have to wonder how that’s going when you obser ve the state of affairs in our modern way of life!!

You hear of rivers and oceans being polluted and the fish being over har vested, our lands being eroded and made unproductive, our forests indiscriminately harvested beyond the ability to replenish itself, and on and on.

In the same book, we’re informed that we have stewardship of our bodies too, and that we have been supplied with intelligence and all things we need to stay healthy and have good lives. I guess it takes talent to foul up a deal like that.

But it certainly looks like it happens right?

Seems like so long ago now but I found myself way back in 1997 lying in a cardiac care unit hooked up to a bank of dials and gadgets trying to survive a heart attack. A little nurse told me my blood was like “Rogers Syrup”. Who woulda thought.

Well, anyway it was discovered I was diabetic and needed to start insulin injections. I was so absolutely upset to think that had happened, when I was sure I was eating sensibly and well!!

Well so anyway, there was a program at the hospital that taught me all about how to inject the insulin, how I could check and monitor my glucose levels and of course the diet I had to stick with to manage my condition.

I seemed hungry all the time, and it seemed a struggle to keep my sugar levels in the 03 to 07 level. Just take more insulin I was told, and I just got heavier and heavier.

Also, I was experiencing sores from water blisters on both legs, that really had me concerned.

By some really wonderful chance of fate, my dear friend, Phyllis showed me an article in the “Reader’s Digest”, that suggested a low or no carbohydrate diet. For a spell I resisted the idea

until she informed me she had the phone number of the author and that he would phone me soon.

“Yeah”, I said, “That will be the day”. But, he did and I was moved to try his “No Carb or Low Carb” diet. He said it would change my life.

In less than two weeks I had basically quit having to inject insulin, except for when I broke my diet and had a shot of a small amount to get my sugar level down. Also, the sores disappeared and I went for years without any reoccurrence.

I’ve been told it can’t be done, but, I lost around a hundred pounds and am able to wear clothes I had abandoned some years ago.

Any way too, between my daughter having a food dysfunction and her research, I’ve really come to study nutrition and the affects of all foods on our health.

About two years back, I had a young medical student interview me and on looking at my chart, he was pleased my blood glucose and pressure was really normal and all was good. When I mentioned that I was on the diet he jumped like he’d been shot at and said, “You’ve just got to eat carbs?”, “Really”, I said. “Who told you that?”.

Well, he just looked at me like a deer caught in headlights. I mentioned according to my studies,

medical students don’t study nutrition.

“Is that right?” I asked. “Well, no we don’t”, he finally said.

I told him cowboy language what he was full of and told him, when I raised livestock a big percentage of their health depended on how I fed them, so how come something like that isn’t really stressed? No answer!!

After a couple of years on my diet, I fell on the ice and suffered a brain injury and spent five weeks in the Glenrose Rehab Hospital.

I was daily told I couldn’t be diabetic as I wasn’t needing insulin, but they couldn’t feed me my diet. If I wanted food like that my family would need to supply it. I can’t even remember being so hungry or ever knowing I could get that hungry.

All around me were folks that were eating things I knew were bad for them in a hospital yet.

Yes. We’re responsible for the stewardship of our bodies.

Oh! and there were several men going around in wheel chairs with their leg bottoms missing.

When asked how come, they said my diabetes caused sores that got infected and I lost my legs.

I feel so blessed I still have mine!!

Raspberry Freezer Jam Dawn Hames Columnist Saskatoon berry season is just about over, but raspberry season is in high gear, especially after all the wonderful rains we have finally received.

We have been picking and freezing berries.

With Saskatoon berries, I just clean any small leaves or bugs out of them, rinse the Saskatoon berries with water in a colander, pat dry and freeze them in containers.

Because the raspberries are so full of moisture from the rain, I have been turning them into freezer jam. I have tested and made two different recipes. One recipe is sugar reduced using

liquid pectin, and the other has even less sugar and uses Knox gelatin.

Traditionally a freezer jam would call for a little over five cups of sugar per three cups of mashed fruit. That is a lot of sugar, thus the new sugar reduced recipie.

U s i n g l i q u i d p e c t i n w i l l h e l p yo u t o b e successful in reducing the amount of sugar for freezer jam.

Raspberry Freezer Jam with Pectin 3 cups mashed raspberries 2 cups sugar 1 single package of liquid pectin 2 tablespoons lemon juice Add the sugar to the raspberries and allow the mix ture to set for 10 minutes. Ad d the liquid pectin and stir for 3 minutes, then stir in

Raspberry Freezer Jam with Gelatin (12 minutes) 1 pouch Knox unflavoured gelatin 1/4 cup cold water 2 1/2 cups mashed raspberries 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup orange juice 1 tablespoon lemon juice In a medium heav y bot tomed saucepan, add in the cold water and gelatin and water, stir and allow the gelatin water mixture to set for 1 minute. In a separate bowl add the sugar, orange juice and lemon to the mashed raspberries, stir and allow the mixture to set for 5 minutes. Cook

the gelatin and water mixture on very low heat for 5 minutes. Stir in the raspberry mixture and cook on medium low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow to cool slightly, the pour the jam into freezer containers, and chill overnight in the refrigerator and then store in the freezer.

The raspberr y freezer jam with pectin, is slightly more spreadable than the one made with gelatin, straight out of the freezer, and has the sweet taste you would expect from a jam.

Because both jams use less sugar, the fresh fruit taste comes through more than a more traditional jam recipe. Freezer jam will keep in the freezer for one year and in the refrigerator for one week.

Who Gives A Hoot?

“I spotted him – it looked a little unusual the way he was flapping,” said Sue Chikie about the Great Horned Owl she discovered on her way to work on the morning of July 30.

“At first I thought he landed on the fence and lost his footing. It only took a couple of seconds until I realized, “He’s in trouble.’”

The owl was actually stuck on the fence. Chikie also said there were a lot of feathers on the ground as a result of the owl trying to free itself.

She managed to flag down passerby Terese Plambech who watched the owl as Chikie returned with help from Rod Hunter. Plambech held the bird as Hunter cut the fencing around it.

“He still had a piece of the barbed wire stuck in the joint of his wing,” said Chikie.

The next step on this unexpected journey for Chikie, Hunter and the owl, who Chikie had by this time nicknamed “Olaf”, was to take the bird to the Alberta Fish and Wildlife office in Vermilion where they were advised that if the bird was left there he would most likely be destroyed.

Chikie and Hunter then decided to take the bird to local veterinarian Dr. Tim Goodbrand who removed the piece of fencing that had four barbs on it, from the bird’s wing.

“The owl was wrapped around the barbed wire,” said Goodbrand. “It was a little unusual it was caught like that, but after 20 years in this business nothing surprises me anymore,” added Goodbrand.

After the piece of fencing was removed, Hunter took the owl to the Edmonton Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

The next day, the Director of Wildlife at the Centre, Kim Blomme, said in a telephone interview that the quick actions

of the people involved in getting the owl there increased its chances of a successful rehabilitation. Blomme said the owl was in good condition and was probably doing well up until it hit the fence.

“It’s a juvenile bird, not full size yet,” said Blomme. She could not say for certain whether the owl was male or female.

“Structurally the bones are okay, nothing is broken and the shoulder is not dislocated which could easily have happened from all the thrashing around.”

At the time the owl was found, one of its eyes was yellow and one was orange.

“It was probably hanging from the fence and thrashing – that could have caused a broken blood vessel in the eye,” said Blomme. “Both look normal yellow today.”

At the moment the big concern is the tissue damage to the wing, that may result in circulation issues.

“The good news is that the ligament along the wing is intact. This ligament is often damaged with barbed wire injuries,” said Blomme.

The wound went right through the wing and the owl received approximately 12 sutures on both sides.

“It’s too soon to tell whether the wing will repair. Then there will be the problem of scar tissue affecting wing extension.

“They (wings) are precision instruments. Birds have given up a lot of things for the privilege of flight,” said Blomme, who added that there is no subcutaneous fat to protect the wings.

It is the intent of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to rehabilitate animals brought to the centre and release them back to the wild.

If the owl cannot be rehabilitated, there is no place for it to go said Blomme. The Great Horned Owl is the provincial bird of Alberta and is classified as secure.

“It’s about quality of life, whether they c an be wild or not,” Blomme

passionate racers, the outriders, the wives and families who follow each race and travel with the sport every summer.

Alberta Professional Chuckwagon Chariot President Kelsey Hardstaff has been racing chariots and chuckwagons since he was five years old growing up in a family with three generations of racers.

“We race all summer long, right from the first of June until the long weekend in September, attending all local fairs up as far as High Prairie, to Rocky Mountain House and as far south as Patricia,” said Kelsey.

“We camp here (Vermilion Fair) for three to four days and we socialize with each other, we’re kind of like one big happy family and you have to be like that because we travel with each other all

summer long,” said Kelsey Hardstaff.

Kagon Hardstaff (Kelsey’s brother) believes, “Hands down, there is nothing like it! I used to ride dirt bikes but this is better. It’s hard to explain, you go out there and you don’t really remember much because you’re so focused on what they (the horses) are going to do.”

Elaine Hardstaff is a grandmother, wife and mother to chariot and chuckwagon racers (Kagon and Kelsey’s mom). She has been involved for the last 33 years and also travels every summer on the road.

“Vermilion is like our Calgary Stampede. This is our 33rd year coming here.

Vermilion is a great place to race.” Elaine has always been involved and passionately follows every race. “I race every single race, it doesn’t matter who is driving I’m racing. If there is a stop watch and a horse I can watch it.”

Elaine is also an animal therapist who has spent long hours in the barn over the years working on injured horses that come back or appear to have no future or a horse that someone has given up on.

“We wish the best for every horse that comes back. Patience is the key.”

Elaine said she has seen many things go wrong over the years and knows the dangers involved but believes, “there is danger in everything, so do you just quit everything?!”

There is a huge amount of work year round; it’s not just three months of the summer.

“By the time New Year’s Day comes we are thinking about what horses will run where. There are meetings to attend; I look after the feeding plans, the horses get conditioned in the spring for the coming races. It doesn’t pay well enough to be a full time job but it’s a full time hobby.”

Jerry Wnuk has been riding as an outrider for 11 years and worked with horses all his life.

“We’re the safety guys out there; our first and foremost job is to make sure of the safety for the driver themselves. We try and slow down the horses if we need to and if they get out of control we will stop them.”

“Vermilion is a great fair and we’ve got a great family of racers here. We’ve 17 heats of chariots and 16 heats of wagons at this year’s fair. Everyone gets along with everyone. You can go from camp to camp with ease, we look after each other.”

Heavy Horses Draw Spectators At The Vermilion Fair

This year’s heavy horse show featured all breeds including Shire, Clydesdale, Percheron and Belgian and attracted large crowds displaying their power and grace on a grand scale.

Harvey MacFarlane, who has been working with heavy horses since 1992,

travelled from Summerberry, 70 miles east of Regina.

“You let them work for you instead of trying to make them work for you,” said MacFarlane. “I drove chuckwagons for 20 years; I’ve been involved with them all.”

MacFarlane goes on the road for three months of the summer every year with the heavy horses all across the country with

his crew The Sanguine Crew.

MacFarlane brought nine of his Sanguine Clydes to the Fair this year and displayed eight in the parade. He is renowned for his horsemanship and ability to take on any driving challenge.

There is a lot of work involved in between getting the horses ready and afterwards rinsing them down and putting everything away, “It’s can take up to 60 man hours of work.”

His horses reflect his confidence. “If you don’t get excited when something happensit all calms back down,” says MacFarlane as an insight on how he controls six and eight powerful animals at one time.

Gordon Ruzicka, from Viking, received second place in the six horse hitch at the Calgary Stampede this year. He now drives with Black Gold Percheron driving for Jeff Berger out of North Dakota.

Ruzicka has attended the Vermilion Fair most years since the 1960s.

“It’s a real nice country fair, there’s a great community here and the barns are awesome. This is our first summer driving for Black Gold Percheron and it’s something a little different. Jeff Berger from Willingson in North Dakota owns an oil fill business and big ranches in Montana and North Dakota farming 3700 head of cows and over 10,000 head of cattle.

“This year we’re doing some shows in Alberta before we head down to the States. I do a lot of judging and travel the country lots and it’s neat because

you have friends everywhere in the horse industry and if a guy had trouble there is someone that you can call for help. It’s a great group of people,” said Ruzicka.

“The horses that we have now and the horses that we had 15 years ago are different. They’re more like a sports horse now energy wise and higher spirited, they have been bred to be because we want more high performance.”

“We try to improve the show every year.

This year’s show really reflected the hard work of the the volunteers and big thanks to sponsors, the exhibitors and all the people who attended,” said Doug Stewart, the coordinator of the Heavy Horse Hitch show.

Greg Young Donates To Habitat For Humanity Project

Greg Young donated $3,000 toward the Habitat Vermilion build at the Habitat site on July 28.

“I get a lot of work out of the town area and I figured it’s time to give a little bit back. With this donation along with the other fundraisers that are going on I think the family should definitely be able to move in before Christmas,” said Young. “Every little bit helps.”

“This is fantastic, it’s truly amazing. We have a few donations lately towards the project that has been really uplifting,” said Chair of the Habitat Community Linda Jacejko. “We’re waiting on the professionals to come and put up the dry wall and we hope that when its are up the rest will go really fast.”

NDP Choice For Lakeland Nancy Mereska Columnist Fifty years ago a baby boy was born to a hard working Ukrainian father whose family immigrated in 1907 and homesteaded in the Elk Point area and Metis mother who is a descendant of Peter Fidler, one of Canada’s greatest explorers and surveryors (1769-1822)s That baby boy grew to be a worker among the people holding down different blue-collar type jobs as he raised twin girls and is now the grandfather of two.

He has also become very involved with the Metis Nation of Alberta serving as Vice-President of Region II. Other positions include Vice-President of Major Projects Group, Aboriginal Planning and Advisory Committee (APAC), Lakeland Indus-

try and Community Association (Board of Directors), and Beaver River Water Alliance (BRWA).

He and his partner, Colleen, oversee the cafeteria program of the Elk Point School. They say if you want a job done, ask a busy person to do it.

Duane Zaraska is the very busy person who has been elected to stand for the NDP in the upcoming Federal Election for Lakeland. There is no doubt that Duane knows well the issues that stand before us.

In his nomination speech he spoke about the place of the family and the middle class; the impact of the economic downturn; and, the need for a national affordable child care program. He spoke of the great need for industrial development in Alberta.

He is in favour of bringing back the Canadian Wheat Board for agriculture producers. On the environment issue, Duane would seek to develop

more wind and solar power.

Duane Zaraska is a quiet, unassuming man with loads of commitment packed into his very intelligent persona. He has an uphill battle in a solid Conservative area. There is no pot of gold at the end of a rainbow for him to dip into.

Campaigns in this country have become too much like the campaigns of our neighbours to the south—the more money, the more exposure, the more chances to win. We only need to look at “The Donald” to see this.

Any and every voter who wants to see constructive change in Canada should look closely at their available candidates and their qualifications before casting their vote. Duane Zaraska is worthy of your consideration. Invite him for coffee, have a few friends in to meet this candidate. Listen to him and support him if that is your choice.

Camping 101 Margaret Lonsdale Columnist

Summer seems short.

Often our most treasured moments in life are those involving the most basic of experiences. Taking a break in nature, even for a few days, can rejuvenate and inspire. Camping isn’t appealing to everyone, but if you go, going with savvy helps to ensure that the experience will be memorable----hopefully, in a good way.

Equip yourself. To camp, you must understand that true camping involves independence from urban convenience. Driving a motor home to the nearest Walmart parking lot is not camping. That is something else. Camping connotes simplicity and a reliance on a basic skill set. It involves getting closer to the ground.

Make a list. Address the essentials, which include things like: sleeping accommodation, clothing appropriate for the anticipated environment, food supplies, including the storage and preparation of same.

Plan ahead. Prime camping locations are known to avid outdoor adventurers and are often booked weeks or months in advance. If you have a specific location in mind, do your research. Pay attention. Identify a location that offers conditions you think will satisfy you. Book ahead.

Expect to be flexible or suffer. When you sleep outdoors, night sounds form an integral part of the ambience. For some, ‘camping’ means loading up on easily prepared convenience foods and an abundance of liquor. If you’re looking to get in touch with your organic self, to commune with the spirits in the forest, but end up camping next to Loudmouth Larry, Drink Until Stupid Sam, and twenty of their best beerswilling, limited vocabulary friends, be prepared either to relocate or to tolerate. It’s a good idea to check with campground management as to the

facility’s policy on quiet hours. No one embarks on a family camping trip expecting to engage in a fist fight with the rowdy guys in site 49.

Embrace dirt. Even if you find a campsite where grass is prevalent and shower facilities exist nearby, count on getting dirty. Repeat. If camping, you will get dirty. And so what? Dirt, so far as I know, is not poisonous. Wilderness camping might mean temporarily adjusting your standards of cleanliness. Don’t worry; you can only get so dirty. If you camp near a creek, maybe you can dip in if it’s not too cold.

Lower your expectations for washroom privacy. Ranking among the most unsavoury aspects of camping, sharing the routine of your personal hygiene with strangers wins First Place.

I recommend quick and efficient action outside of peak hours, if possible. Touch few surfaces.

Be swift. Wash hands wash hands wash hands!

Welcome absolute darkness. Yes, you can equip yourself with lanterns and candles and---unless there’s a fire ban, revel in the beauty of campfire light----but being away from urban streetlights offers the opportunity to fully experience the blind dark. Have you ever observed a cloudless night sky lit only by the moon and stars two thousand light years away? Breathtaking.

Besides, what’s to fear in darkness? Everything remains in the same place as it is during daylight hours. Exhale.

Silence is your friend. If you can manage it, sit quietly on a still night after 11:00 p.m. in a campground. It’s okay to suspend talking, even if all you can manage is a brief pause. Hear the rustle of leaves in the wind. Listen for the sound of night birds. Or the ripple of a creek back there through the silent woods. Listen to your own breath. The rhythm of your own heartbeat, your life force.

Respect wildlife and your environment.

Common sense dictates that you don’t leave food or garbage unattended onsite. That’s called temptation. You are a usurper, a visitor to the

natural world where animals and nature rule.

Heed warnings of wildlife sightings. Be smart.

Be responsible. When you leave your campsite, good etiquette means leaving it clear of any debris, ready for the incoming occupant.

True camping means trusting and, to some

extent, immersing yourself in the natural world.

Hopefully, you emerge from the experience with renewed clarity and focus, with enhanced appreciation for your surroundings and pleased about the self-reliance you realize you are capable of exercising.

12th Annual Brad Phipps Bull Riding In Lashburn

August 7 promises to be an event not to be missed. The 12th Annual Brad Phipps Memorial Bull Riding event will take place at the Lashburn Sports Grounds ball park with the gates open at 5 p.m. and then the spectacular Wild Pony races will entertain all at 6:30 p.m.

The Bull Riding kicks off at 7:00 p.m. featuring some of the top riders in the entire world competing for $10,000 in added prize money.

Some of the well known riders will come from as far as Australia and New Zealand with

many others from the U.S.A. This year the band Yellowhead will be on hand to entertain all. They are an acoustic trio based out of Edmonton and feature Vocalist/ Guitarist Don Segberg. Bassist Nelson Ask and Drummer/sound Tech Jason Ask. They can perform everything from Tom Petty, Steve Earl, Old Crow Medicine Show, George Strait, Garth Brooks, the Lumineers and Mumford and Sons and many, many more.

Don is the former lead singer of Maybe Someday and is not only a guitarist/vocalist but is a D.J. with more than a decade of expe-

rience entertaining.

Nelson is the Bass player and has played throughout the Lloydminster and Edmonton area since 1996.

Jason has also played in several bands in Lloydminster and Edmonton and currently resides in Edmonton.

On Friday July 24, the Junior and Open Beef shows were held at the Vermilion Fair. Over 70 head of cattle were part of the show this year.

JUNIOR SHOW The Junior Beef show is open to anyone under the age of 21. The judge for the show this year was Jessica Sperber from Olds, Alberta.

Gymkhana At The Fair

The Vermilion 4-H Light Horse club hosted a gymkhana at this year’s 109th Vermilion Fair and Assistant Leader Rick Allen said it was the best turnout they have ever had.

“We had around 80 participants from all over,” added Allen.

For a fee of $5 per event participants could register in four different competitions: barrel racing, pole bending, stake race and keyhole.

“It’s really great for the peewees since for most of them it would be their first 4-H competition,” said Allen.

“It’s a low-key event, but it’s still a competition.”

The participants entered in the event were awarded prize money and a ribbon.

“We even had three seniors come out of retirement for this competition.”

Allen added the Vermilion 4-H club members wanted to see their leader Krystal Enstrom riding so she participated as well.

Intermediate Harleigh Zack won 3rd place in the stake race at the Fair on Saturday, July 25.

“Krystal has really built up the 4-H Photos Shannon O’Connor club,” said Allen. “The kids respect her 1st - Hessten Zack 5th - Tressa Weaver and this year we had 13 members and by nd 2 - Ainsley Bader 6th - Emily Gannon August we should have 18.

Budget Blinds Draw Winner

Arielle Farkash was the winner of the draw for $2,500 worth of free window coverings from Budget Blinds in Lloydminster. The draw was held at the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce Trade Show that took place on April 18.
