Jax Manasterski who is 6 years old began his mission to fundraise for the Stollery Children’s Hospital on Sunday July 12.

Jax decided this past June to start his fundraising efforts after hearing all the

fundraising going on over the radio while on a trip to Edmonton.

“Let’s raise money to help the sick kids get better.” said Jax. Jax is an approved fundraiser by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

For his first event he had tables set up

at Lakeland Mall where he was selling an assortment of crafts as well as candy, lemonade and coffee.

The turnout was amazing and he was able to raise $231, all of which will be donated, along with all other monies raised, next June.

Thank you to everyone who came by and showed your support and we look forward to seeing everyone at future events. A special thank you to Harp Khela for donating the coffee and lemonade supplies as well as letting Jax set up in the mall.

One Day Fun Day In Myrnam

The weather cooperated with the theme of this year’s fair in Myrnam which was, One Day Fun Day! Apprentice Parade Marshal Norm Guetal said the parade watchers were spread out along the parade route, and it was a a good turnout.”

“We had about 25 entries in the parade,” said Parade Marshal Nestor Saskiw. “It was the most beautiful day after some much needed rain and everybody’s happy.”

This year’s theme reflected a new direction for the fair.

“It started out as a bingo back in 1974 and when the arena was built in 1978 it got bigger. We even had an outdoor rodeo,” said Saskiw.

“Now we see so many kids lining up for activities, we want to cater to them,” said Guetal.

For the first time the organizers included a kid’s tractor pull in their line-up as well as pony rides and a bean bag toss tournament.

“The bean bag toss is something the whole family can do together,” added Guetal.

“Everyone can do it and it is fun for everyone.”

involved in the Ag society,” said Saskiw. “It’s hard to get younger volunteers. Our Secretary (Tracy Winterbottom) is 28 years old and has three young children and still finds time to help out. We need a few more like her. As long as there’s an Ag society we (Myrnam) should be okay.”

Vermilion Provincial Park Celebrates Canada Park’s Day

This past Saturday marked Canada Park’s Day, the day was celebrated nation-wide on July 18. Vermilion Provincial Park celebrated with a hot dog BBQ and cake at the Splash Park.

for people to reconnect with nature,” said Park Operator Karen McFadyen.

“We’ve had people this year from Ontario, Saskatchewan, BC and Alaska and we get the same people coming back year after year. We have been very busy so far this summer and we are almost fully booked next weekend with the Vermilion Fair.”

The Park has been a popular spot for tourists who love camping so far this summer. The campgrounds bustled with life as campers from Alberta and beyond explored what the Vermilion Provincial Park had to offer.

“We came here last summer camping and we really enjoyed it. This year we returned with six of our friends and our kids for three nights. It’s family friendly and has great amenities and the hiking trails are great. They’re long, hilly and difficult,” said camper Monica Marchand who travelled from Edmonton.

Vermilion Provincial Park features 98 camping spots, (wheelchair accessible) as well as group use areas, electrical hook-ups, picnic shelter areas, several soccer fields, a children’s splash park, and a mini-golf course.

The Vermilion Provincial Park stretches over nine miles (750 hectares) along the south shore of the Vermilion River Valley.

The park is open year round and has approximately 23 kilometers of hiking

trails, including the Wild Rose Trail, the Cathedral Trail, the Fescue Trail, and the Lakeside Trail.

There are also trails for horseback riding and cross-country skiing. Five kilometers of the trails are paved paths for rollerblading and biking, which also accommodate guests in wheelchairs.

The Vermilion Provincial Park is home to more than 100 different species of birds from Canada including geese, ducks and great blue herons to wildlife including white-tailed deer, squirrels, bears and porcupines.

“We’ve also had local people from down the road here in Vermilion bring their children, just for the experience of camping,” added McFadyen.

Tax Fraud Scam

There have b e e n s ever a l repor ted incidents where residents of Vermilion and surrounding areas have been receiving calls from scammers claiming to be from “Revenue Canada” and asking for payment for “back tax”. The scammers request payment be made to an individual rather than the agency. Often times the caller will advise that a warrant is going to be issued for their arrest if payment

Here is some fur ther information from the Canadian Anit-Fraud Centre website on how to protect yourself from these types of scams.

Tax Scams It is tax time again and fraudsters will use this opportunity to attempt to scam consumers and businesses out of their hard earned money.

The most common approach fraudsters’ use is impersonating the real C a n a d a R eve n u e A g e n c y (C R A).

Whether by telephone or by email, the pitch involves one of two variations.

Champion Kurt Bensmiller Wins Back To Back Title

Kurt Bensmiller defended his GMC Rangeland Derby championship title, taking two in a row and claiming the $100,000 cheque at the Calgary Stampede on July 12.

The limelight belonged to the 32 year old from Dewberry on the final night of the Calgary Stampede. He had the speed and beat Sutherland in his Air Canada and Tervita outfit by more than a wagon length across the finish line.

“It feels really good,” said the young Bensmiller last week after he returned to Dewberry.

After eight nights of racing, Bensmiller finished at the top of the standings and was awarded the Richard Cosgrave Memorial Trophy and a 2015 GMC 3500 HD truck as the aggregate champion.

For Kurt Bensmiller it was his second

time standing on the stage and owning the glory following in the footsteps of his legendary dad, Buddy, who won the Calgary Stampede in 1979, ’89 and 2003.

Now with two titles under his belt, Bensmiller only needs one more to equal his dad’s total of three Rangeland Derby championship runs.

“I would like to pass him if I could. It would take one more title to tie him in Calgary, but he’s got so many more that I’ll never be able to match what he has won everywhere else,” said Bensmiller.

After racing three straight weeks in a row Bensmiller said he was tired and that he is still focused on finishing out the end of the season.

“We’ve still got a month left to race to

finish out this season. I haven’t thought too much about what I’m going to do yet for time off.”

Bensmiller gave credit to his father an d hi s c rew for all t he hel p h e’s received over the years.

“I appreciate all the support from everybody in the local area and my crew.”

W h e n a s ke d i f h e wo u l d l i ke to achieve the hat trick next year Bensmiller answered, “For sure, you don’t get too many opportunities to win one let alone three in a row so, it would definitely be a real feat to win three in a row, but the odds will definitely be against it because it takes a lot to work out for me to be up on that stage.”

Stupidity or ignorance that is my question?

I p er s o nally d o not know which it is, but it perturbs me beyond belief when I see people doing what some would think is just plain stupidity.

You m ay be ask ing your self ok , what has her knickers in a knot at this point in time? Well the answer is quite simple. While driving home a few days ago from Lloydminster, I witnessed at least four instances where lit cigarettes were discarded out of the vehicle windows as they drove along our highway!! All you could see was the bouncing red flares as they tumbled their way to the edge of the highway.

Now I don’t know if they were locals, and really that is not even the issue.

Ever y sum m er it happens. A skunk shows up somewhere in our yard.

Usually one shows up under the old granary we have out back and Stormy, our dog, barks himself silly until the black and white little monster ambles on its way.

Not this year. The invading varmint positioned itself under our beautiful gazebo. Stormy started barking at four in the morning, then the smell of skunk wafted up to the bedroom window.

Stupidity Or Ignorance?

The issue is how can people be so idiotic?

According to http://wildfire.alberta. ca/repor ts/sitrep.html as of July 17, 2015 there are currently 93 wildfires burning in our province, with 11 of them being classified as out of control, 31 being held and 51 under control with two new fires within the last 24 hours.

So far during this wildfire season; there have been a total of 1442 wildfires in Alber ta with luckily 1349 of them extinguished thus far. But the damage has already been done with 490,508.82 hectares burnt and we are only half way through the season.

Those numbers are not even reflecting the hundreds of wildfires currently destroying our neighbouring province of Saskatchewan, where thousands of residents have been displaced from their homes.

Firefighters from all over the world such as New Zealand, Mexico, Australia and the United States, as well as,

fire crews from within our own country have been coming to help us combat some of the fires already burning.

These firefighters are sacrific ing their time with their families and the possibilit y of losing their lives to come and help us. Water bomber pilot William Hilts who died when his bomber crashed tr ying to help put down fires near Cold Lake made the ultimate sacrifice, he lost his life! His family will be forever without him, and still to this day you see people doing things which common sense should tell you are dangerous!

I am a smoker, and yes, we all do stupid stuff sometimes, and not think before we act, but in this case common sense should outweigh recklessness.

It has a pretty simple solution.

in it that I very easily drop my cigarette butt into when I am finished.

We all have been talking about the hot dr y spell we are having. We all know that we are in drought mode. We all know about the fire bans which have been in place because of the danger of fires starting so easily. We all know that one spark can cause a fire that can quickly and easily become out of control when our environment is this dry. And yet we still see people doing things which are completely against the realm of common sense; like tossing cigarette butts out their windows while driving down our highways.

I’m not saying everyone does this, I know there are so many of us who are very cautious, and I know many fires are started by natural causes, but lets face it, tossing a lit cigerette butt out the window in such dry times is really not the smartest thing to be doing.

So it goes back to my original question, is it stupidity or ignorance?

The Critter-Ridder Caper

No sleep for the rest of the night as Stormy was barking himself hoarse and running around the gazebo like a crazed animal.

It’s Saturday, so Mitchel was, of course, off to an auction leaving me with barking smelly dog and a skunk still closeted in a safe spot away from our 90-pound mutt.

How to get rid of a skunk without causing more aroma than was already perfuming the yard? I’ve been a customer of T&T Seeds, Ltd. of Winnipeg for many years.

My neighbour first introduced me to their colourful catalogue one winter day when we were both longing for spring.

Thanks to them I have a decent strawberry patch and have had many beautiful vegetable and flower gardens.

This was the first year I tried some of their gizmos and special garden sprays.

“Critter-Ridder” is one of those sprays.

It purports to repel skunks, squirrels, rodents, cats and dogs from the garden.

So far, so good, I have not had any of the above foraging or digging in my garden. I had to put my sleepy brain to work today, though, to get rid of the skunk and give my smelly dog some rest.

I sprayed around the front of the gazebo with “Critter-Ridder”. I also used a good part of a can of “Raid”—wanted

to make it as smelly as possible—fight fire with fire and stink with stink! I also didn’t want the skunk to come at me when I put my real weapon to use. Our big shop vac. I connected three long extension cords, positioned the shop vac hose on blow, placed it under the front of the gazebo, closed Stormy in the garage, and turned on the vac. I ran into the gazebo and closed the door and watched. It didn’t take long for our fourlegged invader to run out from under the back of the gazebo and scamper across the yard toward the field.

Deed well done! I’m just left with a smelly dog who hates to have a bath.

Under this 2015 Budget, over half of Innisfree’s properties will be subject to a minimum tax.

Two minimum taxes, one for improved properties at $750.00 per year and one for un-improved (vacant) properties at $800.00 per year.

Regardless of the legislation this budget pits half of the Town against each other. Half are asked to subsidize the other half’s mill rate and the water rates.

So, if you own an un-serviced lot in Town with no sidewalks, power, gas, water, road or sewer, you are asked to pay $50.00 more than your assessed value to subsidize everyone else. I call this theft. All of this is done to encourage vacant proper-

The 2014 Inspection Report said something smells in Innisfree. There is one law for the rich and another for the poor. In 2015 that discrepancy has been exacerbated.

Why would half the Town pay a tax that reduces the value of their property and in most cases makes their property unsellable?

All concerned people in Alberta should

call their MLA and the Minister of Municipal Affairs and ask why we have “one law for the rich, and one for the poor”.

This fall there will be changes to the Municipal Government Act. If Alberta cannot enforce its existing legislation, we need new legislation to protect property rights.

Like they say on the TV show Dragon’s Den – I’m out.

I will not pay a minimum tax levy.

The hot weather lately is un bearable at times and outdoor adventures, other than swimming, may be slowed down some; life is an adventure…but better spent outdoors.

Lately there has been one thing or another slowing me down with my ad ve nture s. T h i s p a s t we e ke n d i t was my outdoor adventure buddy, my puppy Miss Pickles, who is usually jumping and flipping summersaults she is so eager to go.

Af ter months of deliberation on whether or not to have her spayed, I was convinced by our local veterinarian that it would be best for her overall health and other benefits.

Such as it would keep her home with less chance of straying or wandering, due to the twice a year “heat” or breeding cycles, wandering for a mate or having every male dog within the count y visiting wasn’t something I wanted to experience.

A l s o, t h e r e w a s t h e c h a n c e o f huge litters of puppies known for her breeds. Although, I have raised literally hundreds of puppies in my lifetime, and there is nothing that brings a smile to the face more than a puppy, it’s a lot of work.

Miss Pickles, whom I raised from 5 ½ weeks, as most of you know was exhausting to say the least and she is still a puppy at just eight months...and with her breed, they say will last for

two to three years.

Now with wide eyes I pictured eight to tweleve carbon copies of my hell r ai s in g M i s s Pi c k l e s, w i t h a g o o d chance that would happen every year, I could feel all my energy draining… so I quickly made the appointment to have her spayed.

Reluctantly the appointment was made as I convinced myself it was in her best interests and health. Besides, she was due for her first “heat ” any week now, but it bothered me.

This past Friday was the day of the operation, which was a little more than I had anticipated, as I thought being spayed was “tying up some tubes,” but it involved the removal of most of her female parts.

I dropped her off at the veterinarian first thing in the morning, and paced until I got the phone call around noon all was well. I picked her up in the late afternoon.

She was moving slow and very tipsy from all the drugs. It was a chore trying to get her into my truck. I felt terrible, her entire belly was shaved with a hand long incision that had more staples in her than an office paper file cabinet; also the vet said she would be down and out for two weeks.

With strict orders to keep her indoors with restricted movement and only a short walk daily for the first week, it took me a half hour just to get her out of my truck without hurting her.

I took her into my shop and got her onto the shooters lounge couch. I laid down a fresh towel and got her a pillow to be comfortable…she didn’t move at

all and was very weak.

The heat outdoors was unbearable, but I set up a fan for her and the shop was cool until I sent my wife Roxanne a text picture of her lying comfortably on the c ouc h, and she respond ed “Awwww…Hey wait a minute is that my pillow?!!!”

As it cooled down in the evening I could see Miss Pickles needed to use the washroom…and to her that’s outdoors only, so I decided to tale her for a short walk on the leash.

She could hardly walk so we only made it across the driveway to the lawn and little cabin playhouse, which I sat on the small veranda as she did her business. She then, ever so gingerly, struggled to sit down and take a breath of fresh air.

That’s when a yellow streak shot out from the playhouse eavestrough like a lightning bolt and the yellow jacket wasp stung poor Miss Pickles on the nose right between the eyes.

Now last time she was stung it was life threatening as her entire fac e swelled up. Now, she was panicked not knowing what was happening and could hardly move to get away.

I was panicked now because I have an emergency bee sting pill I had to give her, but I didn’t know if that would af fect her condition combined with other drugs.

Lu c k ily, I had the veter inar ian’s private phone number and got a hold of her. By that time Miss Pickles’ nose was swelling badly. I was told to give her the pill immediately regardless of other conditions.

Instantly the swelling and my anxiet y we nt d ow n. T h at wa s h ow my weekend star ted…it got worse kind of...she got stung again and I got stung four times both from yellow jacket and black hornets and wasps.

Drought conditions blew up a wasp/ hornet explosion in number in just weeks and now it was “war” but that’s another story of that adventure…

Dr. Judy, the veterinarian, gave me strict orders after the operation…to keep Miss Pickles indoors, dr y-NO swimming in the duck pond, immobile, and NO rough housing!!!

By Sunday she would not tolerate being indoors anymore. I tried to take her for a short walk, she in a streak headed straight for the duck pond and dove in, then started running around chasing farm kitties.

By Monday she was running and doing backflips trying to knock me on my butt, so full of energy I would have rather roughhoused with a grizzly bear - yup Miss Pickles is doing well!!

When The Smoke Clears Does a full “growed” man, full of bee stings running all over the yard with a bath towel after a duck pond soaked dog qualify him as a “dog’s best friend”?

Those Minor Little Details

Do you remember the poem about how the loss of a horse shoe nail caused the loss of the horse shoe and as a result the use of the horse was lost, causing the loss of the rider, and then as a result the loss of the battle and the war!!

Seems like little minor things can turn out to be significant, you think?

Happens all the time in life when things get analysed it seems, little minor things have happened to change things in a sometimes tragic way. Think of what the loss of a match could mean, if it meant you hadn’t the means to light a fire or life saving light. Just one match could light a signal fire and save your hide, yes, a minor detail could save your life.

In a lighter vein, back in my smoking days, I was combining late one night, and while the combine was unloading, I suddenly felt I needed a smoke, Well, you know, I couldn’t find a match or light of any kind, and decided I’d have to improvise a lighter, Cowboy style.

long, I tore a strip off my hanky and fastening it on one end of the wire, I went to the gas tank on the grain truck, I wouldn’t advise this trick, but I was desperate for a smoke. Anyway I dumped the rag into the gas tank and then touched the wire on the battery terminals, creating a wonderful spark that ignited the gas soaked rag.

The wire unfortunately welded to the terminal and was suddenly white hot!! I had to knock it lose, and it fell flaming into the stubble, and I had some burns on my hands, etc. Soon I had a fire going that endangered the whole outfit, and lucky my coat made a good fire fighter and I was able to put it all out.

Trouble is after I had the fire all out I realized my smoke was still unlit in my mouth. I decided it was time to go home!!

Ever hear any stories about how a minor detail like leaving a gate open can cause such a commotion at the least likely of times and effect the state of affairs for days!! In the hurry and stress of things I can remember not checking the fuel gauge and having an engine just go silent in the middle of no- where!! Yes it can happen and does fairly often. Not bad in a vehicle on the ground, but better not happen in an aircraft you think?

Well, a big percentage of forced landings are tracked to fuel management the statistics tell us. Minor detail indeed.

So many things in our lives today need careful attention paid to every minor detail.

When the canola seed you’re using cost hundreds of dollars a little bag, you had better very carefully check and set the seed rate. I’ve heard some real horror stories about that. Same like the moisture content when you’re storing the stuff.

A minor difference of a point or two could cause it to cook the whole bin!! Yes just a minor detail!! I used to hand load, rifle and shot- shells and I can tell you that every, yes every little, you’d think minor detail could cause you to miss the shot of a lifetime or even mess up your gun. You certainly had to keep an eye on ALL the details.

When brother and I were yet teenagers we did a good bit of overhauling neighbours tractors and vehicles and learned that in that particular endeavour every little minor could make the difference of success or failure!! Somehow we never had a failure. My brother had an uncanny ability to mind the minor details.

Let’s talk about fishing. Now there’s an activity that can really show up how important little insignificant details can make

every part of catching fish important.

It’s a science of little minor details!! The size and weight of line must be considered. In ice fishing the line must stay limp and supple when it’s cold. You can’t find bottom if the line stays in a coil!! The size and weight, yes and especially the colour of the lure can all make the difference between a fish fry or failure!! The proper action of your lure and how you jig it can either attract a bite or scare those perch away. Just a minor detail makes ALL the difference.

I love to garden and grow things and it’s always a challenge to match the conditions and have success. You can’t ever take it for granted things will, always be the same. The little details will help you see what matters and get your seeds and plants to grow. You omit anyone of the details and disappointment will most likely follow. My thoughts are that too many times we forget and take for granted the details probably shouldn’t matter and go along thinking things like that can’t ever effect you in any negative way and are so shocked and dismayed when we realize that with just a little extra care and paying attention to these minor details we’d have a more likeable outcome.

Feeding Management Important In A Dry Year

Designing or developing a feed ing management program requires a 365-day focus that includes pasture a n d w i n t e r- fe e d i n g m a n a g e m e n t .

This is particularly important this year because of the dr y conditions that have dramatically reduced the amount of forage growth in pastures and hay land.

“Getting the cow through summer in good body condition and maintaining calf growth rates is the first step,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist, Alber ta Ag-Info Centre, Stet tler. “ Nutr itional requirements of a lactating cow are 25 per cent higher than a cow in mid-pregnancy.

If the cow does not consume sufficient energy and protein because of limited forage availabilit y, milk production will be reduced. For a young calf, it takes seven pounds of milk to provide enough nutrients to have the calf grow by one pound.”

If cows are thin or thinner than what is wanted, supplementing grain or higher quality pellets on pasture is an option. “ Feeding three to five pounds of grain ever y second or third day improves the energy intake of the animal and reduces the amount of forage the cows will eat. If calves are alongside the cow, they will try to eat the grain as well. Providing grain or pellets to the calves on the ground makes the transition to a creep feeder easier. Af ter the calves learn what grain is, scattering some grain around the creep feeder will entice them to eat out of a creep feeder. Calves can start receiving a creep ration at 50 to 60 days of age. One research paper says that the difference in weight gain was up to 125 pounds when creep feed was supplied to the calves.”

If cow condition does not improve, or if the calves do not seem to be growing as well as they should, says Yaremcio, wean the calves. The digestive system of a calf is fully functional at 150 days of age and can be weaned

A cow that is in body condition score 3 going into winter (compared to body condition score 2) requires1,400 pounds less hay to meet energy requirements to keep warm let alone put on weight.”

Improved body condition also improves reproductive efficiency. “Cows in good body condition cycle sooner

after calving and have a higher first service conception rate compared to thin cows,” says Yaremcio. “The goal is to have 70 to 75 per cent of the calves born in the first cycle or 21 days of the calving season. A calf born 21 days earlier than another animal and maintains a growth rate of two pounds per day should weigh 42 pounds more than the calf born one cycle later in the calving season. If a 650 lb. weaned calf is worth $2 per pound, the cash value of the calf born earlier in the season is $84 higher than the younger lighter calf.”

I like lilies, all kinds of them. They are what I planted in our tiny, albeit vibrant perennial garden outside the round window that a meticulous draftsperson once advised was incongruous with the design of the rest of our house. Somehow, we’ve managed to live with the mismatch.

There are ferns, too. These have proliferated to such an extent that somebody ought to thin things out a bit. Soon.

My lilies are fragile, fragrant, symbols of beauty. To look upon them after an early morning rain or in the subdued light of a summer evening elicits a calm that’s better experienced than described. Plants not only enhance our sense of well-being, they nourish and sustain us. They are also the heartbeat of our economy. If you enter a garden and stand very still, you might witness some activity that has implications far beyond what appears on surface as a few insects alighting on select blossoms, then flitting away. transfer of pollen grains to fertilize flowers---is an essential aspect of our ecosystem. The work of pollinators is as critical to our survival as is the farmer continuing to annually cultivate and manage his fields.

Species interconnectivity isn’t just a concept borne of a hippie dream; it’s an essential key to life. Science tells us that invertebrates like bees, moths, butterflies, even pesky flies, serve to pollinate approximately 150 food crops throughout Canada and the U.S. Among the most significant contributors of all is the honeybee, a species that some sources, including Bloomberg Business Week, affect an estimated 200 billion dollars worth of crops annually. It’s little wonder that scientists have raised alarms upon discovering that bee numbers are rapidly declining.

Habitat destruction is one reason cited for the decline over the past several years.

As humankind expands, development and urbanization necessitates the destruction of wilderness habitat. Everything has a consequence. Scientists closely monitoring the situation say that although the disappearance of natural habitat plays a signifi-

cant role in the decline of bee populations, and despite some insecticide companies having advanced the possibility that Varroa mites are also part of the problem, by far the most significant threat are pesticides.

In Canada, we rely on Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) to regulate all pesticides, including insecticide-treated seeds, used by our growers. The Agency employs a regulatory assessment process working on the basis of risk versus hazard. On trade association CropLife’s website, it states that ‘Insecticides are hazardous to bees if they are exposed to significant doses.’

The theory is that insecticides applied to seeds ought not significantly affect bees since the seeds are planted in the ground, thus eliminating any potential exposure of the insecticide. Hmmmm...does the insecticidal content then evaporate as the seedling emerges from the soil?

The main culprit pesticide is identified as neonicotinoid, a synthetic copy of nicotine. Nicotine happens to be very toxic to nearly all invertebrates, including our most prolific pollinator, the honeybee. Most of

the damage appears to result from the residual dust spread during the planting process, although damage from ingesting product taken from plants grown from insecticide-treated seed also takes its toll.

It’s a challenging problem to manage: protecting crops from disease and infestation while concurrently protecting our much-needed, essential pollinators.

In April, the European Union issued a moratorium on the use of neonicotinoids as it assesses the global decline in bee populations. Meanwhile, Health Canada officials deem this precautionary step unnecessary. The risk, says a spokesperson, was not significant. The Pest Management Agency continues to collect an annual licence fee from chemical companies allowing them to manufacture and sell the insecticidal seed to our growers in Canada.

Among the lilies and in two other garden spaces, we’ve planted Monarda, commonly known as Bee Balm. It’s a beautiful, fragrant plant with purple flowers. As you might guess from its name, bees love it. It seems the least we can do.

Wine And Cheese Ladies Night At Mannville Riverview Golf Course

A crowd consisting of approximately 20 local golfers gathered on the deck at the Mannville Riverview Golf Course on July 15.

A variety of quality wines were poured by Jennifer Fulford from Crimson Imports out of Edmonton.

Participants were served a selection of cheese, meats and finger food, followed by draws with prizes. Afterwards the ladies boarded their golf carts and headed down the hill for nine holes of golf on a shotgun start in the evening sun.

Understanding food and the impact it has on our body is an ever growing science. We would probably agree that eating like our grandparents did, would be healthy, but it is increasingly difficult without major effort.

Our ancestors often had livestock and large gardens. They harvested and preserved the food, all by hand without chemical preservatives and/or additives.

They purchased very little from the store, only staples, and seldom ate out. Home cooking was the norm.

In just three generations our food patterns have changed dramatically.

Today it is common to buy all of our food from the grocery store, including processed convenience foods and eating out is common. Unfortunately many of the foods that have made their

way into our modern daily life may be doing us more harm than good.

Trans-fats, damaged omega 6 vegetable oils, refined sugar, food additives, artificial colours, preservatives, animal growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, mercury, chemical herbicides and pesticides are an integral part our food chain.

In fact, we may eat the entire list daily and not even know it. Its effects are insidious; hardly noticeable in the short term, but working its damage slowly over time.

The most common effect is cellular inflammation. The increased toxicity of our food has caused increased inflammation. Most bodies are designed to store the toxins in white fat cells to protect the organs. This toxic fat gives off toxic lipopolysaccharides, which causes further inflammation, in a vicious cycle.

Over time, constant inflammation can become excess fat and/or contribute to various diseases that are silently in the

making.

To help combat the landmines of our modern food supply, there are foods that are highly anti-inflammatory. When we think of a food such as an orange, we know that it is healthy, full of vitamin C and fiber. Two hundred calories of orange has an inflammation factor IF of 15. Any number above zero means that the food is anti-inflammatory. Comparably hot chili peppers also contain vitamin C, but 200 calories have an IF of 43,6111. This may be why the elderly lady on TV says “I put that #$%@! on everything”. Other top anti-inflammatory foods are garlic powder IF 18,790, ginger IF 15,889, turmeric IF 12,745, kale 2,412 and onion powder IF 1,870. More examples of highly anti-inflammatory foods are Atlantic salmon IF 907, Atlantic sardines IF 512, pumpkin IF 334, onions IF 303, spinach IF 259 and olive oil IF 526.

It is also important to avoid or limit the top inflammatory foods like processed carbs such as white bread, refined

sugar, most vegetable oils, trans fats and hydrogenated fats. For many people dairy and gluten are also inflammatory.

In addition to consuming anti-inflammatory foods and avoiding inflammatory causing foods it is important to support our immune system with good gut bacteria such as those found in yogurt with active bacteria cultures, kefir, kombucha, kimchi and naturally fermented sauerkraut.

If all of these foods are unappealing, then there is always probiotics in a pill.

Probiotics are the good gut bacteria that keep our immune system fighting for our health 24/7. Probiotics need prebiotics to provide them with food. Prebiotics are beneficial fiber found in such foods as bananas, cabbage, onions, apples and carrots.

Even though we live in a modern world of food, we can still benefit from the ancient advice of Hippocrates when he said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.

$10,600 Grant Awarded To Allied Arts To Host 2nd Culture Days Festival

Department of Canadian Heritage Submitted

On July 16 Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament (Vegreville-Wainwright), announced funding of $10,600 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program for the Vermilion Allied Ar ts Council. Mr. Benoit made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

This funding will enable the Vermilion Allied Arts Council to present the 2nd edition of Culture Days. The festival will feature musical entertainment, dance performances and demonstrations from more than 330 local artists.

Culture Days is expected to attract more than 2,500 visitors and relies on

the support of 125 volunteers to organize, plan and deliver the festival. This year’s Culture Days is taking place from September 25 to 27.

The Vermilion Allied Arts Council is a non-profit organization that encourages and suppor ts visual, literar y and performing arts in Vermilion and surrounding communities through the presentation of professional performances.

The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. “ O ur G over n m e nt i s p l e a s e d to suppor t the Culture Days festival, which brings the community together

and is a wonderful event for local residents and visitors to Vermilion. The Vermilion Allied Arts Council plays an important role in the community and works tirelessly to create a thriving arts scene for all to enjoy here in Vermilion and in the County of Vermilion River,” said The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages “Now in its second year, the Culture Days festival provides opportunities for local artists and artisans to showcase their talents and provides rich entertainment and hands-on activities. Thanks to the many volunteers who dedicate countless hours planning and organizing, I know that this year’s Culture Days festival will be a success,” added Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament (Vegreville-Wainwright).

Vermilion Communities in Bloom hosted another successful self-guided Garden Tour on July 12 with five proud homeowners opening their gardens to public viewing.

Participants on the tour followed a map to the featured gardens that were all within walking distance of each other in the Brennan Park Subdivision. The gardens and landscapes ranged from quaint to serene.

Wanda Toullelan, who has lived in the subdivision for the past seven years, was curious about the Garden Tour when she first saw it posted on Facebook.

“I thought, what is going on?”

After she investigated a little more, she decided to offer her garden to be part of this year’s Tour.

Toullelan has a variety of edibles in her garden including two cherry trees, a five variety apple and plum tree, as well as an assortment of tomato plants including a tomato tower.

Other yards featured cosy corner getaways tucked behind blooming potted planters and overhanging tree limbs, pristinely manicured lawns that the best golf courses in the world would be envious of, and shabby chic antiques that have literally grown into the landscape.

A wishing well overflowing with flowers is a visual centerpiece at the Toullelan residence.

Dennis and Diane Gerik’s garden has been a work in progress for the past 18 years said Dennis Gerik.

“We did it in stages,” he said. “We don’t have a real plan.”

Although Gerik said maintaining the garden is a lot of hard work it is worth it.

“It’s a nice, peaceful feeling sitting down outside with a cup of coffee on Saturday and Sunday morning,” he added.

Regarding his secret to a beautiful garden he said, “I use a lot of MiracleGro®.”

New SHAPE Art And Wellness Studio Set To Open In Vermilion

The new ‘SHAPE Art and Wellness Studio’ will be a centre for art, fitness and health.

The duo behind the new venture that will be opening at the Vermilion Lakeland Mall in the fall, are husband and wife, Robin Nordling and Leigha Wald.

The pair relocated to Vermilion one year ago.

“Robin and I have been dreaming about this for a while. The time hadn’t been right because we had young kids and it has just recently kind of came together. We aim to combine fitness, dance, acupressure and art classes,” said Wald.

“We like the small town feel Vermilion has to offer, Whitehorse was very isolated. We find the people really friendly here and it’s a great family oriented town,” added Wald.

“The isolation of Northern BC and Yukon became too much and we decided to move and that was what brought us to Vermilion,” said Nordling.

The pair first met in Yukon when they were only four years old, after Leigha moved in across the street from Robin.

“We didn’t see each other again after high school for 8 years until we reconnected in Vancouver.”

The couple have three children and spent two years living in Costa Rica for a different side of their passion, to be in a place where they could garden year long for the organic farming.

Wald was born in Vermilion and raised in Whitehorse. She has taught dance varieties for 17 years. Wald is qualified in dance with a diploma from Edmonton and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University.

Nordling is qualified in acupressure and massage from Brandon Raynor in Edmonton.

“I provide acupressure for athletes and healing. It is technique similar in principle to acupuncture without the needles. In treatment, physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages.”

Nordling’s work also benefits patients suffering from chronic disabilities and illness. It is ver y complimentar y to relieve back injuries and in helping to get realigned.

“I do a special kind of massage; it’s a very kind of therapeutic massage. I work with the patient in the healing process, not just treating a bit of stress.”

You may recognize Nordling as a star on the Discovery Channel TV series ‘Jade Fever’. The TV show premiered last spring. Nordling got involved with the show when he was working seasonally as a jade miner in Northern BC. “ The new premises will be 230 0 square feet. Sheila Cadman will be teaching a large range of fitness classes for all ages. The art classes will be for all ages. We want to be a place where everybody can come and where Moms come to do fitness classes while the kids do art classes. We are really excited about it and we hope everybody else is too,” said Wald.

Brighter Beginnings Summer Program

Children visited for a tour of the Vermilion Library on Thursday, July 16 for the Brighter Beginnings Summer Program. “It is to introduce them to the library and hope that they will come back,” said Program Coordinator of the Vermilion Public Library Michele Scott.

Children from the ages three to five years old attended and first took a tour of the Vermilion Public Library. “They’ve been coming for a number of years now, we take them on a tour and we read to them and do crafts with them.

Vermilion Fair Expands Poultry Show

The Vermilion Fair has a grand tradition of livestock shows, including horses, cattle, sheep, goats and chickens.

If you’ve taken a detour through the Butler building during the annual fair, you’ve probably seen a few pens full of chickens, or spent some time at the hatching display, full of fluffy, freshly hatched chicks.

At the 2015 fair, attendees will get to see more birds than ever before with the newly expanded poultry show.

“The fair has had a small, open, fun chicken show for a few years. Last fall, I approached the ag society about renting their facilities to hold a summer American Poultry Association (APA) sanctioned show, but they felt it would fit well with the format of the fair, and proposed we do it as another great attraction for the annual fair,” said Jennifer Jacula, show secretary for the Vermilion Fair Poultry Show.

Jacula worked to partner the Vermilion Agricultural Society with Canadian Heritage Breeds, an Alberta-based livestock conservation group that hosts poultry shows and heritage livestock information events, and

the two organizations are working together to put on this year’s show.

“It’s been amazing to put on this show.

We were hoping for 140 entries, and what we got is 150 bird entries, including chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and guinea fowl.

We kept the traditional pen-of-three show, which allows anyone to enter the show, even if they don’t have purebred birds,” said Jacula, who added that the show has great support with local farms and businesses signing on to sponsor, including Moses Farms, Chatsworth Farm, Too-Lads Building Supplies/Rona and Jennifer Jacula Photography, with support from Mainstreet Hardware.

Exhibitors from as far away as Cochrane, Alberta have entered the show, and APA judge Rico Sebastianelli will be judging the show. This year’s show will also look a little different than previous shows, with most entries being exhibited on skirted tables where it is easier for the judge and spectators to see the birds, rather than on the floor as in previous years.

Jacula hopes that this new format of the poultry show will carry on and become an annual fair tradition.

“There used to be a poultry show in Lloydminster, but they quit holding it a few years ago. The nearest show is in Wetaskiwin in February, which isn’t always an ideal time of year to be tackling the road conditions, and the other shows are in Priddis and Red Deer. I really wanted to bring an APA show back to this end of the province. I hope this show will continue to grow every year, and that the partnership between the Ag Society and Canadian Heritage Breeds continues to be a great one,” said Jacula.

This year’s poultry show also includes an egg show, with entries showing different colours and sizes of eggs, as well as some junior and adult entries of painted or decorated eggs.

“We have 21 entries in the egg show, so be sure to spin by the egg show tables to see not only the best of what our local chicken breeders have in their daily egg baskets, but what our local artists can do with an egg. I’ve been told there will be some goose egg pysankas entered in the competition,” said Jacula.

The show features both open and junior divisions, with several young local poultry enthusiasts taking part, including Jacula’s

own daughter.

“We have some great local kids who have a lot of fun showing their poultry. In the junior division alone, we will have bantam and standard sized chickens, ducks and geese. My daughter showed her Silkies at the Canadian National show in Red Deer last November, and was thrilled when she won the Best Bantam Feather Legged in the junior division with one of her pullets,” said Jacula, whose own breeding program, shared with a partner in southern Alberta under the Gala Partridge Chanteclers name, won the Best of Breed and Reserve Champion American awards with a Partridge Chantecler pullet at the Canadian Nationals.

Precautionary Air Quality Advisory Lifted For Northeast Central Zone

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has lifted the air quality advisory issued July 10, 2015 for the northeast section of the Central Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS), including Beaver County, Flagstaff County, Provost M.D., Wainwright M.D., Vermilion River County, Two Hills County and Minburn County.

Air monitoring has shown that this

area is not currently being impacted by smoke from wildfires in the Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan areas.

Because wildfires continue, air quality can change with wind and weather conditions. As such, the precautionary air quality advisory issued July 3, 2015, for the entire province of Alberta, remains in place at this time.

Truck Fire At Stewart Cresent

On Sunday evening July 12 the Vermilion Fire Department extinguished the fire of a pickup truck in the drive way of a house in Stewart Cresent in Vermilion. “We were having supper when we saw the truck go past. We looked outside and the pickup truck was completely engulfed in flames. The Vermilion Fire Department quickly put the fire out,� said Linda Emmott who lives nearby and was a witness to the fire. They’ve got the marks, they’ve paid tuition deposits and they’re eager to start classes at Lakeland College’s Vermilion campus.

Now they need a place to live.

All 544 residence rooms and 17 family units at Lakeland College’s Vermilion

campus are spoken for and more than 35 people are on the residence wait list.

With the admissions department continuing to process applications for the fall, the wait list is sure to grow before all of the programs are underway in September.

“The community has always been very generous in opening their homes to our students. With an anticipated enrolment i n c rea s e, we’re hoping that more people who live in or close to Vermilion

will rent a basement suite or a room to a college student,” says Georgina Altman, vice president of advancement.

One of the urgent needs is for shortterm accommodations. Students in the next firefighter platoon start classes August 4 and graduate October 23.

There are also numerous apprenticeship intakes throughout the academic year and they are typically eight weeks.

The first two intakes are August 24 and August 31.

“For people who want to help out

but don’t want long term boarders, we welcome any short-term accommodations they can provide,” says Altman.

Think Twice Before You Decide To Drink And Boat This Season

Canadian Safe Boating Council Submitted

Drinking and boating continues to be a factor in approximately 40 percent of boating-related fatalities. An IPSOS-REID study commissioned by the Canadian Safe Boating Council and conducted in 2014 cited some disturbing perceptions amongst boaters who drink and boat at least occasionally. These included: It’s not dangerous to drink and boat.

Drinking while boating is just part of the overall relaxing experience.

The chances of getting caught are extremely remote.

The first two of these suggest that we as boaters need to be better educated on the dangers of drinking and boating. It’s been proven that the combination of sun, wind and rocking motion of the boat significantly increases the intoxicating effects of alcohol. Not only are your senses dulled but so are your abilities to safely operate a boat. Reduced inhibitions often also lead to us taking risks that we wouldn’t normally engage in like operating their boat at speeds unsafe for the conditions or letting passengers sit on the bow of the boat with their legs hanging over the edge while the boat is in motion. It’s all too often forgotten as well that, we as boat operators, are responsible

Lakeland College Alumnus Accepted To Vet School

Growing up on a farm southeast of Vermilion spurred Moniek Okkema’s passion for animals. From the dairy cows they milked to the horses she rode and the pets she loved, Okkema always loved being around animals. Now she is working towards turning her passion into her future career.

The Lakeland College universit y studies alumnus was recently accepted into the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). As the premier centre of veterinary education and research in West-

ern Canada, it is highly competitive to be accepted to the college.

Each year, up to 78 students begin the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. On August 24, Okkema will be one of those students.

“I am very excited for this,” she says during a break from her summer job at the Vermilion campus. Before she leaves for Saskatoon, Okkema will continue to work on the Vermilion campus, helping out at the Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland.

Okkema star ted working towards attending the WCVM in 2013 when she enrolled in Lakeland College’s pre-

veterinary medicine university transfer program. After one year at the college, she transferred to the Saskatoon university to continue pre-veterinary medicine studies and automatically qualified for the U of S transfer scholarship thanks to her great marks from Lakeland.

“Transitioning from Lakeland College to the U of S went well for me. Even though the class sizes were a lot larger at the U of S than at Lakeland, I was prepared,” Okkema says. “It definitely helped already having done a year at Lakeland before going to a bigger centre.”

Prospective students must complete at least two years of pre-professional study, however, due to the competitive nature of the program, most applicants complete more than two years of university work. Thanks to Okkema’s consistently high marks, she qualified for the interview process.

“The important thing is to keep your marks up because they interview you solely based on marks. If you don’t have the marks, then you won’t get an inter-

view,” she says. During the interview, Okkema says she was asked about her vet experience and soft skills. She prepared by conducting research about WVCM, current ethical issues and the vet field.

“It’s definitely nerve-wracking,” says Okkema. “There is a panel of three people and they determine if you have to do a few more years of school or if you get into vet school. They’re interested in what you’ve done in the past and what kind of person you are. They are looking to learn more about you than just your academics in the interview.”

Now that she has been accepted to the internationally-recognized veterinary college, Okkema says she’s looking forward to her next academic chapter and working in the veterinary field.

More than 450 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled at the WCVM that includes a veterinary medical centre, a provincial diagnostic labo-

rator y and large-scale research facilities.

Three Local 4-H Member’s Win Scholarships At Summer Synergy 2015

On July 6 to 10, 2015, many 4-H Sheep, Equine, Dairy and Beef members along with many Beef Breed Association members gathered at Olds Regional Exhibition Grounds with their livestock to participate in 4-H Provincial Shows as well as Beef Breed Association Shows.

In addition to those shows, Olds Regional Exhibition, along with many sponsors, also hosted the Summer Synergy Show where Youth in Agriculture were able to compete for Scholarships and Supreme Champion Animal titles.

The objective of Summer Synergy is to provide a collaborative venue to showcase youth in agriculture by combining traditional elements with innovative approaches for personal achievement and development. This will increase

inter breed interaction, avoid duplication, improve financial sustainability, engage the public and enhance the profile of rural lifestyle and primary production.

The Youth of Sheep, Equine, Dairy and Beef competed in confirmation classes and additional marketing, multi- judging, trimming/Clipping/team grooming/hippo logy (species specific), and Showmanship classes. The participants earned aggregate points in their classes. The top 55 aggregate point winners move onto the scholarship round. Scholarship winners were announced in Olds on July 10 following the parade of Champions. These members then go to the Calgary Stampede Grounds where they are bused downtown to the Trevita Office Building for the next step of the competition. The Junior (Age 9-11) members participate in a group round table inter-

view workshop. The Intermediate (age 12-14) Members participated in Agriculture related interviews. The senior members (Age 15-20) compete for 3 levels of scholarship by participating in an interview in front of a panel of two to three people on topics related to the Agricultural Industry. The seniors were judged on their interviews and placed for aggregate points to determine the level of Scholarship they would receive.

There were a total of 55 Calgary Stampede International Youth Livestock Scholarships at a total Value of $70 000.

There were six junior scholarships at $500, fifteen intermediate Scholarships at $1000 each, twenty Senior Scholarships at $1000, ten Senior Scholarships at $2000, and four Senior Scholarships at $3000.

Our NE 4-H Region has three successful members who received Scholarships at the Calgary Stampede. Junior Equine Member – Kenzie Hickman ($500), Senior Sheep Members Travis Dow ($1000) and Kaylie Krys ($1000). All Scholarship members were introduced on the stage in front of the Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon Crowd during an intermission.

They also received a Calgary Stampede International Youth Livestock Scholarship Buckle and Cowboy hat.

A congratulation also goes to Kenzie Hickman who was one of a few to display their animal at the Stampede for July 11 and 12. Kenzie was the Junior High Point Equine member and participated in Parade of Champions on July 12.

2015 4-H Alberta Sheep Show Results

The Alberta 4-H Sheep Show was held in Olds, AB, from July 8 to 10, 2015.

The Vermilion 4-H sheep club had eight members represent our club proudly at the 5th Annual Provincial 4-H Sheep Show.

Four of our club’s families travelled to the show with a total of 32 sheep. The Westergaard’s with 15 sheep, Krys’ with nine, Dow’s with seven and Verstappen’s with one. There were a total of 34 members of 4-H from throughout Alberta and 130 Sheep registered in the show.

Our club participated in many different classes at the provincial sheep show, results shown below. All the member from the Vermilion sheep club went in marketing. The junior marketing had to make a farm safety plan. Our junior- Mia Westergaard was 4th with her group.

The intermediates were put into groups

and had to make a video to promote the Provincial Sheep Show. Our intermediates Maranda Westergaard was 4th place, Kaelam Westergaard was 3rd place and Megan Krys was 2nd place.

The seniors had to send in a resume prior to the show and then at the show they participated in ‘you’re hired’ where they had to do an individual interview for a Sheep Industry related job. Our seniors Michaela Westergaard was 8 th, Kaylie Krys was 7th, Travis Dow was 5th, and Jess Verstappen was 2nd.

In judging we had three different classes to judge; market lamb, ewe lamb, and ram lamb. Our final placings were Juniors- Mia Westergaard 2nd. Intermediates-Maranda Westergaard 14th, Megan Krys 8 th, and Kaelam Westergaard 6 th.

The Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club Project year end is right around the corner.

Members weighed in their market lambs on May 18, have raised them to market weight and are now ready for the Show and Sale which will be held on July 21, 2015 at the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Barn.

The Achievement day classes begin at 1pm, followed by the Market Lamb Class at 6 p.m. and the Market Lamb Sale at 7 p.m.

Our members have put a lot of hard work

into the lambs you will see at Achievement day. Many of our members raise their own lambs as well. They breed their ewes to lamb about mid-March in order to have market lambs achieve industry standard market weights by Achievement day which is between 105 to 115 pounds. The members have learned a lot about animal husbandry which includes livestock health, livestock nutrition, animal behavior, animal handling as well as preparing an animal for the show ring.

We hope to see you at our achievement day and view the work that has been put into the sheep projects at our show.

The emphasis for the 4-H Alberta Sheep show are the female projects: the ewe lamb, yearling ewe, mature ewe and flock while encouraging members to be successful in the Sheep Industry. There were 28 ewe lambs entered and were split into three classes. The top two from each class advanced to the grand champion class.

Seniors- Michaela Westergaard got 7th, Jess Verstappen got 6th, Travis Dow got 2nd, Kaylie Krys got 1st. Travis, Kaylie, and Mia advanced to the grand champion round. Kaylie Krys was awarded reserve grand champion. A senior member from the Irricana 4-H club was awarded grand champion.

Yearling would be the member’s ewe lamb from the past 4-H year that may have had lambs for the first time. There were 21 ewes with lambs at foot, two from each class advanced to grand champion class. Maranda 8th, Mia 7th, Michaela 5th, Kaylie 3rd and Travis 2nd. Travis advanced to the Grand Champion round. A member from the Irracana 4-H club was awarded grand champion yearling ewe.

Mature ewe would be the member’s Yearling from the past 4-H year(second lambing) with lambs at foot. Michaela placed 4th, Kaylie 2nd and Travis 2nd. Kaylie and Travis advanced. A senior member from the white court 4-H multi club was awarded grand champion and Kaylie Krys reserve champion.

Another class offered is lamb at foot, which would be the lambs born from the yearling and mature ewe. Lamb at

foot was split into three categories: a ewe lamb, weather lamb or ram lamb. In the ewe lamb at foot Travis was 1st with one of the 3 lambs he had in that class, Kaylie was second and Michaela also placed very well. Weather lamb class Kaylie placed very well. In the ram lamb Michaela placed very well and Kaylie was 1st.

The flock class was split into two classes. Kaylie placed 1st in her class and Travis was 3rd in his class. Kaylie advanced and was awarded Grand Champion Flock and an intermediate member from Bow Valley was reserve champion.

Each senior and intermediate member was then paired up with another member to do show team judging. Maranda and her partner from Bow Valley were 6 th placed. Megan and her partner from Cheadle were 3rd. Kaelam and his partner from Cheadle club were 1st. Travis, Jess, Michaela and Kaylie all participated in Seniorshow team judging and placed 2nd to 5th .

Good job to everybody and thank-you to all the sponsors that made this possible.

Special mentions: Immediately after the Provincial Sheep Show was complete two of our members had to go to Provincial Soccer tournaments. Congratulations to Kaelam Westergaard of Vermilion Strikers for their Silver Medal and to Mia Westergaard of Vermilion Strikers, also for a Silver Medal. Travis Dow and Kaylie Krys gained enough Summer Synergy Aggregate Points to receive a $1000 Scholarship each which they had to attend the Calgary Stampede on the Saturday following the PSS. Special Thank you to the parents who split ways and vehicles to get the kids to their locations as well as take livestock and holiday trailers home. Great Job Everyone!

Two Vermilion teams secured silver medals in Provincial Tournaments that took place in Vermilion for the U12’s and Stettler for the U14’s the weekend of July 10 to 12.

“It’s tough to lose the only game of the season in a gold medal match,” said U14 Boy’s team coach Dolly Dalton. “But being undefeated all season and second in all of Alberta is a pretty big deal,” he added.

“We had no trouble at all getting to the finals. It was a great weekend for the club.”

The U14 Boy’s team defeated Devon 11–2, Camrose 3-1 and Didsbury 4-2 before coming up against Hinton in the gold medal match.

“We came up against a strong team in Hinton,” said Dalton. “We beat them in the

This time the players from Hinton defeated the Vermilion team by a score of 2-0.

“It was a great season and I coached an amazing group of young men.”

“We played four games that weekend.

The team did everything I asked of them and more.”

Dalton’s twin boys are on the U14 team he coaches. He said he doesn’t know if the twins would agree but he said he isn’t any harder on them than he is on the rest of the team.

“I am equally tough on them all,” he laughed.

He did admit to having a soft spot when it came to rooting for the U12 Girl’s team since he has coached some of them in the past.

Wayne Zayac, coach of the U12 Girl’s team, said in an email interview that the silver medal was “…a well-deserved accomplishment for the Vermilion U12 Striker Girls 2015 season.

“A season that included, 14 wins (8 shut outs), 1 tie, and 3 losses earned them bronze at Lakeland Cup, bronze at the Camrose Night Classic Tournament, gold for first place in league play, and clinched a silver medal at Provincials.

“The core group of these players that started with us as the first U10 Girls team two years ago have stayed together and have been a big key to success,” said Zayac.

“Our new players this year learned quickly and adapted to the pace which gave us a well balanced team. The players stayed confident, the parents support them and it turns the season into a fun experience whether we win or lose. The

result is a bond in this group that is nothing short of amazing, even practices are fun for them.”

Zayac also thanked Manager Sheri Tovell, Assistant Coach Wayne Roach and the parents for all of their help and dedication.

Similar to Dalton’s U14 Boy’s team Zayac said the team “never gave up.”

Zayac recounted the following story: “At end of season wind up every year we have a parents vs. the players fun game.

In the past, we all go out and run for half an hour or so until everyone has had enough. This year, we played for nearly two hours on a hot day. With the score tied 1-1 and the sun going down we asked if they had enough: one of the U12 girls yelled ‘No! Not until we win!’ They did, the girls scored. And that’s the way it’s been all year for them, they never gave up.”

Looking Back At The Queenie Creek Stampede

The Queenie Creek Stampede attracted thousands of people to Vermilion during its heyday said local historian and author of Let’ Er Buck, Allen Ronaghan.

“It (Queenie Creek Stampede) was well-known,” said Ronaghan. “Riders came from as far as Washington State.“ Ronaghan wrote Let’ Er Buck two years ago at the age of 90. The author said he attended the Stampede but doesn’t remember much as he was just “a babe in arms” at the time.

Ronaghan said both his parents participated in the Stampede; his mother in the Ladies Relay Race, and his father in the Bucking Contests.

“Riding at Queenie Creek was really something,” he added. “It was very well organized.”

The Stampede began as a district picnic in 1918 and became a fully fledged stampede in 1920. For the admission price of just one dollar, spectators could watch around 33 events throughout the course of the day.

Some of the events included, A Free for All (half mile), Ladies Steer Riding, Colt Riding (bareback), and even general athletics such as Foot Relay Races, Wrestling and Blindfolded Boxing (for boys).

“The Stampede hit its peak in 1920,” said Ronaghan.

Wop May made an appearance at the Queenie Creek Stampede around this time in a stunt flying exhibition. May, a famous Canadian flying ace, was the pilot Manfred Von Richthofen, the infamous Red Baron, was pursuing before being shot down by allied forces in 1918.

May was at the height of his fame around the time he showed up at the Stampede. Ronaghan said he had a bit of trouble landing his plane, however, due to a number of people standing on the land-

ing strip.

He was forced to land on prairie land that was riddled with gopher holes and May’s plane was damaged due to the uneven terrain added Ronaghan.

Ronaghan credits Tony Dixon as being the chief organizer of the Queenie Creek Stampede Association. He is also credited with supplying the stock for the Stampede including the black bucking horses known as the Gold Dust Twins. A prize of $100 was offered during several years of the stampede to anyone who could make a qualified ride on either of these horses.

According to a book compiled by the Vermilion Old Timers in 1967 entitled Vermilion Memories, the prize money was never collected.

Ronaghan said corrals were on site.

The site was located 14 miles due north of Vermilion where a large side hill is located that acted like a natural amphitheatre.

“There were hundreds of cars parked on the hill,” said Ronaghan. “You could watch from your car or sit on the hill.”

The last Stampede was in 1925.

“The land was owned by CPR and when they sold the land that was the end of the Queenie Creek Stampede.”

“If you look carefully, you can still spot the hill,” he added. “There was talk of putting a landmark there.”

Let’ Er Buck, the story of the Queenie Creek Stampede, is just one of the many local subjects Ronaghan has written about.

He is currently working on a new book called Matt and Mary that is about his grandparents who homesteaded in Vermilion.

“It contains memories of two generations.”

Ronaghan was a teacher before he began his “second career” at the age of 50 and obtained a Masters and a Doctorate in History. He began writing in 1959 and has 14 books to his credit.

“If you have a notion to do something,” said Ronaghan “Take the first opportnity.”
