Danielle Marie Wins CCMA Spotlight Performance Contest

S h e d i d i t ! D a n i e l l e M a r i e wa s announced as the winner of the 2015 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Spotlight Performance Contest on July 8.

Danielle represented the British Columbia Country Music Association (BCCMA) winning the fan-voted contest hosted online by the CCMA. Danielle Marie will

now appear on The Legends Show.

It will take place during this year’s Country Music Week running September 10-13 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Legends Show will feature many of Canada’s great rising stars alongside some of Canada’s great Country artists.

Country Music week is an annual event created to heighten awareness and increase exposure for Canada’s country music artists.

The rising young star is only nineteen years old and was born and raised in Vermilion.

Danielle Marie has been focused and working hard on her music career over the past year. She was delighted and over whelmed with her win last week.

“I wouldn’t be going to the CCMAs if it wasn’t for all the people that voted for me, because it was a voting contest.

It’s humbling to know how many people supported me with votes and believed in me. I am very grateful and overwhelmed.

This morning I woke up to texts, phone calls, posts and love. I am so honoured and proud beyond words to be representing BC and all my supporters as the Canadian Country Music Association Spotlight Artist. I can’t thank everyone enough,” said Danielle Marie after winning last week.

“I had a fan girl moment when Canadian country music singer Tebey personally tweeted me, congratulating me and offering me backstage passes to his show.”

“Music can be a gamble as a career and you have to believe in yourself and have people believing in you. It has been tough but I’ve been lucky enough that I have had a lot of support.

“There is so much talent in this country and to have been selected is crazy. I have an amazing army behind me.

“Without all of the endless support and votes I would not be here, and it truly means the world to me that you all believed in me enough to get me to this point. After I got the phone call I cried for four hours straight. But they are happy tears, humbling tears. This whole contest has really opened my eyes to how many amazing people I have in my life. I want to thank everyone who voted for me and I hope to make you all proud.”

Danielle Marie said making people happy with her music is the best part of being a musician.

“When I’m on stage and I look out and see people clapping along and smiling it is an indescribable feeling.”

Although the Come By The Hills Festival in Mistahiya keeps growing in attendance every year a decision has been made to cap ticket sales at 600 this year said the President of the Battle River Music Society, Phyllis Elmer.

Any thing larger than that would require a different approach that would change the feel of the Festival, she added.

“There’s something special about summer weekends in Alber ta. The Mistahiya venue captures this feeling. It is quiet and takes you away from modern technology. It is in the top layer of those spots in Alberta.”

The venue also offers Festival-goers a place to camp overnight and it is very family-oriented, said Elmer.

“The setting along the (Battle) river and the hills behind it create a natural amphitheatre.”

“Performers send in requests to play here. We have hundreds of performers in this province and Western Canada.

We could draw an entire festival just out of Edmonton,” said Elmer.

“The Boom Chucka Boys finished o u t (t h e Fe s t i va l) l a s t ye ar. T h ey wrapped up with a set that had the hills dancing. Since performing last year they have gone on to win another major music award.” (Group of the Year an d Rising St ar awar d s with the Association of Country Music in

Alberta – AMCA) The Boom Chucka Boys are in the line-up again this year as well as a lot of local musicians and artists.

“We have a great line-up,” said Elmer who added there is a real mix of talent this year.

“Joe Laurence and his daughter Katelyn will be playing; they did a wonderful set at the Vermilion Folk Club. Jack Semple is stellar and needs no introduction. For the younger people we have Billie Zizi who plays gypsy jazz.”

Zizi is the daughter of Cam Neufeld, a well known Edmonton musician and fiddle player.

“We even have Barry Allen and the New Rebels. Allen is a rocker from the 60’s...old rockers never quit. I’m in awe of everybody.”

In total, there are 13 artists, who will be performing over the course of the two-day festival, on August 14 and 15.

There will also be structured children’s activities on the grounds between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 15.

This is Elmer’s first year as president and she said other than being an audience member she has not had any official involvement before this year.

Sometimes it seems as thoug h no matter how many times it is said people still seem to ignore the

dangers of heat.

I have seen it when I go out and about; seniors, children and family pets left sitting in a vehicle on a hot sunny day with no means of escaping the heat which builds up in a matter of minutes inside the vehicle.

Last year, around this time, I wrote about how heat kills! I was really hoping it would help at least get people thinking about how dangerous heat can be, and therefore refrain from leaving loved ones whether of the human species or animal

Today (July 8) is a perfect example. I walked out of a local grocery store and there was this poor little furry dog sitting in a locked vehicle with one window down just a couple inches at best.

On other occasions (not just here in town) I have seen children sitting in car seats and the elderly waiting for their caregiver to return from whatever shopping excursion they were partaking in.

I really do not understand the rationale behind such behaviour, so once again, I am sitting here writing another editorial about how heat can kill you!

Last year while writing, I wanted to do an experiment and see how long I could last sitting in my truck with the windows up on a hot day. I have to admit this is not something I will be doing while writ-

ing this one, as it was complete torture the last time. I did, however, do one little experiment with an external thermometer app on my phone.

I went out in my car, which was sitting outside the office in the sun with the windows closed, and upon entering I took the first reading- it was 27 degrees Celsius. I sat there for five minutes with the windows closed, and in those five minutes the temperature inside my car rose to 34 degrees Celsius. Imagine sitting there for ten or even 15 minutes, how hot it would be! I was sweating, finding it hard to breathe and, just wanted out.

I opened the door of my car just a crack and even with the breeze that was outside the temperature inside my car after 5 minutes had dropped only one or two degrees.

kidsandcars.org states that the average number of child vehicular heat stroke deaths per year since 1998 is 38. That’s one death every nine days in the United States. Those statistics can be here as well if we don’t take care and heed caution.

This editorial is just a reminder to all of us that heat really does kill! Please do not leave your children, elderly or pets in cars with no means of getting out. If you must leave them there like I do with my puppy sometimes, leave your car running with the air conditioning on and lock your doors with an extra key. As a co-worker said to me while I was writing this “We all need to put on our thinking caps.” We all need to think before we do something we may regret. Death is final!

Leaving young children or pets unattended inside a vehicle puts them at risk of becoming sick, unconscious or dying, even on what can seem like a relatively mild day. Inside the vehicle, things can heat up very quickly for anyone unable to get out.

Extreme heat affects young children faster and more dramatically because of their smaller size. Young children (and older adults) cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently, which leaves them vulnerable to heat stroke.

temperature reaches 40°C/104°F and this can be fatal. In a small, closed environment like a vehicle, our bodies, especially small or frail ones, can go into shock very quickly causing circulation to vital organs to fail. In other words, it can only take a few minutes to lose someone in our care.

Health Canada is reminding parents and caregivers this summer that it is never safe to leave people and pets inside a vehicle, even with the window down. Don’t run that quick errand leav-

ing loved ones unattended – the stakes are too high.

As our climate continues to change, Environment Canada expects increased numbers of days in Canada with temperatures over 30°C/86°F, increasing the health risks of extreme heat. Remember, heat illnesses and heat stroke can be prevented.

Playing Outside Fuels A Child’s Curiosity

For generations, parents have been telling their children to “go outside and play.” It’s good advice: playing outside is a b ig par t of healt hy c hil d ho o d development. And it’s fun.

“Children are eager to understand how the world works and they do this through play,” says Laura Crawford, provincial lead for Play and Physical Literacy for the Early Years at Alberta Health Services.

“Outdoor play fuels curiosity, problem solving and social skills.”

Young kids, from toddlers to six years old, discover all kinds of new things while they’re climbing, swinging, running or riding their bikes. Playing outside helps them develop basic movement skills. And as they master the monkey bars, they’re also building self-confidence.

Children need lots of play time. “ Fr o m a g e s o n e t o f o u r, c h i l d r e n need at least three hours of activity

over the course of the day,” Crawford suggest how you can play along or help. Follow his lead. says. “Children five and older need at least one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.”

Some of that play can be structured and led by an adult so children can learn how to do a new skill or activity. “Structured activities are things such as going to the park and kicking a ball, throwing a ball, playing soccer or learning to swim or ride a bike.”

But it’s also important for children to have plenty of unstructured play, such as running around or using their imagination to invent brand new games and activities. Crawford suggests allowing most play to be unstructured.

As a parent, you can watch, wait and listen as your child plays. Watch to see what your child is interested in and what he may be struggling with.

Wait to see how you can offer support, but give him time to practise and see if he can figure it out on his own. Finally, listen to him describe his game or

Sorry I missed last week’s column; I was having some needed R&R. I took a couple days off…with Canada Day on a Wednesday; I figured I should take Thursday and Friday off also.

That would give me a “five for two” holiday…five days for taking two off. Outdoor adventures raced through my mind. On Canada Day, I raised a brand new Canadian flag up the pole.

But other than that I didn’t get out and join any of the community celebrations. I did get some things done that needed to be done around the home front, although I did think a lot about Canada Day. I am a proud Canadian, as we should all be proud…we have come a long way to have the country we now call Canada home. Canada Day 2015 was Canada’s 148th Birthday.

One hundred and forty-eight years may be a few lifetimes, however, in the scheme of the world and time we are a very young nation. We are even almost 100 years younger than the United States of America.

for many and many died for what we also enjoy today and we are changing all the time. In fact, until 1982, what we know as Canada Day was called Dominion Day. Politics aside, there is no place on earth I would rather live. It was almost 100 years ago now that my own grandfather helped map out Alberta’s waterways and trails. He was a true frontiersman.

To him his outdoor adventure was day to day life; something with someone I wished I could have shared more of in our vast Canadian wilderness. It’s hard to grasp how hard things may have been… yet so simple.

Even in my day as a young man instructing wilderness survival in schools, colleges, and universities, wilderness survival was reality in much of Alberta and Canada.

I can remember telling students that someday there would be portable twoway radios or maybe even phones that will even have the capability of locating one’s exact spot anywhere in the world.

I also predicted that these portable devices would be super small like the size of a coffee cup. That was way prior to the cell phone and GPS [Global Positioning System] and other advanced systems with our technology today.

I had no idea, as I believe most didn’t,

that in our lifetime we would see such technology. Most don’t realize today that there is more technology and computer systems in our common cell phone then there was in the entire Apollo 11 mission to walk on the moon.

I travelled over 300 miles as a teenager just to watch Neil Armstrong take that first step on the moon, on a big modern black and white television. I marveled at the technology.

Modern technology has let us explore and undertake outdoor adventurers in almost every peak, valley, and wilderness area in Canada, and as inhabited and over-populated as Canada is getting.

There is still wilderness and outdoor adventures you can’t find anywhere else in the world. There are still even places one can go where no man has stepped before, in modern times.

I found myself dreaming of these Canadian adventures as I spent an entire day cutting grass, another crossing a few things off the “Honey-Do” list, and keeping busy in the archery shop and ranges for a couple more days.

So real outdoor adventures were at a minimum…that is until I thought about it… my home is in a rural setting where neighbours are miles away and can’t even be seen. I shot my bow on my outdoor range.

It came to me recently that guys my age are probably the last ones who may have had the experience of running that marvel of its time, the binder. When it came on the scene in the middle to late 1800’s it was the consolidation of several wonderful developments that took the place of the sythe or sickle and then through a series of steps had the crop all tied in a bundle. Just think of the work it saved. First, if you’ve ever cut anything with a sythe, you’d know the back breaker that was. Then a bundle sized bit was gathered and by hand tied with a twisted handful of the cut material. One man to do three jobs say, or three people doing the combination, think of doing an acre like that!!

Can you imagine the first crude machine that would do all the whole process, taking in a swath of several feet at a time.

By my time the binder had been refined to an efficient piece of equipment and a whole industry was developed to supply the twine. I remembered Dad cutting grain with a horse drawn mac hine that re quire d four sturdy horses. In hot weather they’d change horses at noon because it was hard work!! I can’t imagine being able to handle four horses and run all the jobs that were required of you to make sure the bundles were tied neatly in the middle and hopefully keep the reels and butterboard properly adjusted, the bundles dropped in a nice straight windrow and like that. You just didn’t sit there and watch, you were busy if you did the job right. Well, first let’s just hook up the horses or tractor, which ever you had, later on we had tractor power take-offs

On Running A Binder

to run the binder, but earlier a big “Bull wheel,” drove the whole deal. Not a good deal if you got plugged. When tractors started to appear with power take offs, change over kits became popular to convert those bull wheel drives to the power take –off drive.

A, “Carlson Drive” kit was easily installed and made such a wonderful difference. Besides the knotter, a critical part of the binder was the canvases that carried the crop material to the knotter. The platform canvas was the length of the table, (never more than ten feet) that I ever heard of anyway, and the two elevator canvases that pulled the crop as it came on the platform canvas and elevated it up and over the big wheel and it then slid down and came to where the knotter was waiting to make it into a bundle. The canvases had to be put on so the flap that covered the adjusting straps was pulled down against the straps by the rotation. Many times a greenhorn would put them on backwards and crop would get inside with predictable result!

They needed to be tightened so they ran square on the rollers too!! Now, you had to adjust the height of the cutter bar, so that you could make a decent bundle.

We cut it as low as we could, because we wanted to save all the straw we could. You wanted the binder higher at the back and tilted lower at the front, by about six inches. That allowed the cut crop to stay at the front to keep it even, and come in contact with the butterboard and you could regulate the twine on the bundle effectively!! Oh, yes, the twine. It had to be installed together in the twine box so that the end of one ball led to the start of another.

Yes, and you’d better know how to tie a proper square knot or you’d be faced with some untied bundles and a rethreading chore. To rethread the

binder you pulled the twine up through the lid and passed it through all the guides and little devices that put tension on the twine to keep the twine tight around the bundles. Yes, it had to be correctly adjusted too!!

Then it was threaded into the needles so it could poke through the material and position the string around the bundle and over the, “Bill Hook” and have the knot made. At that time a sharp knife cut the bundle lose and on one turn of the mechanism, the bundle was ejected out onto the carrier!! You had to activate it by hand to see the procedure happen as it was just a blur, and it happened every few seconds in a good crop. The trick was to have it happen with few if any misses!! A skilled operator would of course see that the crop was being cleanly cut all across the platform, first, and then position the reels so they just

kept the crop falling evenly and not being unduly tossed about. You needed to be quick on the lever on an uneven crop!! The crop stayed to the front of the elevator system and then down the slide aided by the butter board and another adjustable board that kept the butt of the sheaf nice and even. There were packers that helped make the sheaf nice and tight and when sufficient material was present, it pushed a lever that allowed the knotter mechanism to turn just one turn to tie and eject the sheaf and then wait for the lever to activate it again!! All that happened in a twinkling of an eye, and thousands of times in a long day.

The operator had to trouble shoot if it quit. His job was to see it did tie and you sure would have trouble keeping stookers happy, or threshing crew if they had too many loose bundles to contend with.

My brother said once that before the first pension cheque is issued, each person ought have to write out a brief life history. A memoir. Such an exercise could serve two purposes: first, it would leave a record, something for descendants to read and ponder; second, it would allow for review and reflection.

It sounds like a noble and worthwhile endeavour. But memory is tricky. History is subjective. Do we remember or do we only think we remember? And how much does accuracy matter? Maybe the key is simply to leave a record. Leave a stone, so that it can be known...that you passed by here.

The more I write, the more I discover.

Things do emerge if you persist in the practise of setting down your thoughts, whether random or ordered. You reveal things about yourself to yourself, often

without ever intending to travel that road.

But a memoir sounds daunting. I have always kept a journal----no, I’m fabricating here, feigning an orderliness that doesn’t exist. I have always kept a running dialogue. My ‘Day in the Life’ is comprised of several journals, bits of loose paper, notebooks, frayed scraps, improvisational scribblings on dried leaves and wood and backs of photographs, fragments of recordings, videos, paint smears. It’s a rag bag of words and sounds and images that represents me but would make little sense to anyone coming across it by chance. It’s a film in desperate need of a director, a translator: me.

When my children were infants, I started a journal for each of them. I might say now that I did this as an exercise, to keep up with my writing while learning to be a mother, or to document my fascination with the process of parenting. That sounds noble and lovely and purposeful. I also did it out of an irrational fear. Fear of

dying while my children were young motivated me to leave something for them in case I couldn’t be there in person. Words, it seems, were the best I had to offer.

Fortunately, I’m still around. The thing is, keeping up individual journals takes effort. Had I departed this earth early, my children would have been left with several pages as proof that their mother was literate and loved them more than anything, but they would have had to guess at the goings on in their lives over long stretches of time. I guess those gaps between dates mean I was concentrating more on living and less on writing about it. So goes reality.

If you’re writing a memoir, what bits do you include and which do you leave out? Who do you expect will read it? If you are now of vastly different character than you were twenty-five, thirty, or fifty years ago (and who isn’t?), do you wish to reinvent parts of your story, to leave out your days of whiskey-swilling championships or swimming naked in

the creek by moonlight? These decisions are yours.

Some people seem to feel that things of the past are better left there. My father, for example, never spoke candidly about his early life. He preferred to share fragments through generalities and humorous anecdotes. Direct questions about origin and ancestors were often answered with non-sequiturs. Maybe he just preferred to forget. Mysteries endure.

Forever, I have reminded our children that everyone has a story worth telling.

Everyone. Your story may be ordinary or it may be sensational, but it exists and it’s valid because it’s the story of you.

Let it out, I say. Find a starting place and write something. Stop saying you can’t remember or you can’t be sure and don’t want to lie. None of us is sure of anything. Memory is a shifty trickster. But one thing always leads to another. Write.

Set your story down. Someone in the distant future wants to know you.

Muralist Barry Overn was out working on his latest mural in Vermilion last week. It is the second of four murals he is painting in town. The new mural is located on the back wall of the Stewart Realt y building. Overn has been painting murals professionally for the last 28 years.

“I found the picture in the Glenbow Museum in Calgary and thought; this would make a really cool mural.”

Overn uses a method by projecting the image onto the wall at night then traces the outline of the image and then air-brush paints the image on.

Banana Raisin Cake With Butter Cream Icing

Finding baked goods that do not contain h a r m f u l t r a n s - f at s , excessive sugar, artificial flavours, chemical additives and preservatives is hard to do, unless you bake it yourself.

During the summer I usually wait until evening or a cooler rainy day to do baking. I baked this Banana Raisin cake several times for visiting family during Canada Day weekend, so the recipe is well tested. I used unbleached flour, but if you are gluten-free, you could try substituting the gluten-free pancake mix for the

flour. If you are eating dairy-free, then use coconut milk or almond milk.

A banana and a dairy product are a good food combination to eat together for increased protection from ulcers and increased calcium absorption.

Bananas are high in pectin fiber and aid in movement through the digestive system.

Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and potassium. A four year research study has shown that the high potassium content found in foods such as bananas help reduce blood pressure and the risk of stroke.

The inside of the banana skin, or a ripe banana can be rubbed on dry skin, let dry and then washed off for a softening and

hydrating home spa moisturizing treatment.

Raisins also have lots of health benefits; they contain powerful antioxidants to help prevent cancer and skin aging.

These antioxidants help to protect your eyes and vision. The fiber in raisins is beneficial to the digestive system.

Banana Raisin Cake with Butter Cream Icing 1/4 cup butter 1/3 cup of sugar (divided) 1 egg 3 ripe bananas 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup milk 1 tablespoon vinegar (apple cider or white)

2 teaspoons baking soda 2 cups flour 1/2 cup raisins Cream the butter and sugar together with an electric beater; beat in the egg, and vanilla. Cut the banana into slices and beat into the butter mixture. Measure the tablespoon of vinegar into a 1 cup measure and then fill with milk, stirring half way. Buttermilk can be substituted for the vinegar and milk. Beat the milk into the butter mixture, and then beat in the baking soda and flour. Once the flour has been added, over mixing with toughen the cake. Stir in the raisins. Pour into a buttered 9 x 9” or 8 x 8” pan and bake for 25 - 30 minutes at 350 degrees. When cool frost with a butter cream icing.

My Spiritual Journey Is Deeper Than Yours

I have recently been walking a spiritual path and boy, are my arms tired.

Not everyone will endeavour to complete their spiritual journey while walking on their hands, but I figured having all the blood rush to my head would expedite my spiritual awakening. What has taken others a lifetime to achieve, I managed to pull off in just under a month.

The fir st rule in a good debate is to know both sides of the issue.

A narrow-minded thought process does not a good debate make. Every issue has opposite points of view for its solution. Logical thinking must come into play—the what ifs and then whats must be researched and thought through before the persons performing in the debate even open their mouths.

The second rule is to keep emotion at a minimum and facts at a maximum. Every issue, especially social issues like gay rights, abortion, racial disparity, aboriginal rights, health care, education, etc., has a deep-seated emotional aspect.

People in the free-flowing democracies that make up our North American countries can express their views through the magnificent freedoms we enjoy.

However, most public expression such as demonstrations—make that peaceful ones—are driven by emotion. The leaders (supporters) of these demonstrations

when my friend, Sir Lohengrin, decided to embark on his spiritual journey. I thought to myself, I can go deeper and farther than he can and in a much shorter space of time.

This spiritual one-upmanship has now become part of both our journeys, and I don’t mean to brag - but, I’m pretty sure I’m winning.

Sir Lohengrin is on a quest for true loveBORING! My quest is for fame, riches and power through spiritual fulfillment, which totally trumps true love because that is HOW you find true love (plus get all those other things).Cha-ching!

The third rule is not to let the opposition get the upper hand. A debate is ruled by time-allotted to each participant. But, with a nod from the adjudicators of the debate, an interruption can happen if an absolute untruth is spoken by one side.

The fourth rule is to attack the issue not the opponent. Personal attacks look cheap and do nothing for the side attacking. Issues that rule our society are far more important than those carrying the banners for the yeah or nay.

The fifth and most important rule is to hold the attention of the audience by keeping the debate positive showing how respective points of view can help not hinder society at large.

I have been dressing appropriately for my journey by wearing yoga pants on a daily basis. I wear them to work, to shop, to play and even to bed. Lohengrin has pointed out that I use them for everything but yoga.

All I know is that I will be ready to participate in a yoga flash mob while he’ll be left standing on the sidelines, questioning whether or not he should join in because he’s not wearing yoga pants.

This is a huge part of spiritual journeys in general - knowing when NOT to take action!

The Shadows Season

The Vermilion Shadows U16 team had a successful season this year.

Throughout the season, they played very well winning 10 out of 13 games during league play in the Lakeland League. They attended provincials in Leduc July 3-5.

During the Provincial tournament, the Shadows played well and beat the Camrose Crossfire 15-10, Olds Stealers 13 -11 in an international rules tiebreaker final, Nose Creek Spitfires 14-11, and SEMSA Blue Jays 17-6 in round robin play.

The shadows lost a close one in their first playoff game to the West Valley Mavericks from Calgar y 14-13, but the Shadows came back strong in the Bronze medal game triumphing 16-10 over the Olds Stealers.

Workbee Weekend

The weekend of July 4 and 5 was a busy bee time at the playground in Der went, as a group of communit y members spent their time beautifying the playground.

Derwent resident Debbie Schafers along with her two granddaughters Raye and Annie, decided to set up the Workbee Weekend.

“The girls love coming to Derwent and playing in the playground in the summer and tobogganing in the winter.

I live close to the playground and the sound of the children laughing and playing is wonderful,” said Schafers.

Schafers put the word out about the projec t roughly t wo months in advance and two families jumped on board and took on specific projects.

Nicole and Simon Noster and their children agreed to work on the boat an d Re b e c c a an d M i c h ea l S p e ir s agreed to work on the slide.

“The playground has been here for 11 years and it needed a facelift,” said Schafers.

On June 29, Schafers put a sign up in the post office about the project. During the weekend they had ten adults working very hard to complete the mission. ”Now the playground looks beautiful after 66 volunteer man hours have been put in. The work is not quite

done but it is still in the works.”

“The volunteers worked very hard and need a huge pat on the back for what we accomplished over those few days. I would like to thank all involved in the Workbee Saturday and Sunday, said Schafers.

Whether its preparing to host the Provincials as an Association or to participate in the Provincials as a player, the key to making everything work is preparation.

“Last year was the first time we hosted Provincials in many, many years,” said Michael Crowe President of the Vermilion Soccer Association (VSA) and U12 coach for the Vermilion boys team.

“I think the Alberta Soccer Association was impressed with our success last year and that helped in our bid this year. It also helped in terms of being organized and prepared this year.”

The Vermilion Strikers club held a work bee on July 5 to get the soccer fields ready for the tournament.

“We had between 40 to 50 people show

up to help - parents and other volunteers.”

Crowe said the tremendous volunteers helped to water the fields, paint the nets, and get the lines ready for the tournament.

“Our club runs off volunteers. Our volunteers are extremely dedicated and reliable.”

Crowe also mentioned the tremendous partnership the Association has with local business sponsors in terms of support.

Competition Co-ordinator for the Alberta Soccer Association, Darron Bunt said she was impressed with the success of the previous year’s tournament in Vermilion.

“It certainly helped in terms of the bid for this year,” said Bunt.

“I was here last year and I had a great experience. The facilities and the volun-

teers were great - everybody is on board and put a lot of effort in. It’s very friendly and very professional,” she added. “We had a really good time.”

Bunt said the one of the most important aspects to hosting a Provincial championship, especially for the U12’s, is that they get an opportunity to play at a provincial level for the first time.

“At the Tier 4 level (rural), players also get the opportunity to play teams they don’t usually play.”

Fourteen teams from across six regions in Alberta participated in the tournament.

“The Northwest Peace soccer players travelled the furthest to be here,” said Bunt.

teams were undefeated in league play before securing bronze medals at the Lakeland Cup. The U12 Girl’s team faced tough competition in the Vermilion hosted Provincial tournament and were defeated in the gold medal final on Sunday, July 12

by Whitecourt by a score of 0-2 The U12 Boys were out of the medal standing on Saturday, July 11 after being defeated by Carbon on Friday, July 10 by a score of 0-1 and again by Stettler on Saturday, July 11 also by a score of 0-1.

“They were close games,” said Crowe.

“We are playing the top players in this league from across the province, and meeting them for the first time,” he added.

“We have two really strong teams .”

Where Did You Get That Idea?

There are some pretty crazy business concepts and products out there. Have you heard of the website, “Reserve a Spot in Heaven”, where for $13.79 you can have a reservation in heaven and you can get refunds if you don’t make it! What about, “The Excused Absence Network”? For $25 you can have a fake doctor’s note or jury summons request.

And who can remember the famous Pet Rock. That’s right; a rock complete with care and feeding instructions. All of these business ideas are real, so real in fact that they are making serious money for the entrepreneur that came up with the idea. In the first 6 months The Pet Rock Company made a profit of $15 million!

Not all of us would be willing to take the risk with a crazy idea like the ones mentioned above and we Canadians are quite innovative having created some

really great products and business concepts. The snowmobile, the zipper, the Wonderbra and of course the telephone are just a few Canadian inventions, not to mention our old stand-by; Tim Horton’s. So how does one come up with the next great business idea or just a good business opportunity to start making some real money to pay the bills? Here are some tips to get you started?

Find a need, fill the need.

Instead of asking yourself, “Why don’t they invent this, sure would make my life easier” you would be saying, “I can do this, all I need is that”. Any product or service that fills a need or solves a problem is a good place to start when thinking about a business idea. Many successful entrepreneurs have started their own businesses solving a personal need - spotting demographic and social trends.

Improve on an existing product or service. One popular option is to leave your job to start your own business because you know you can do better. Be careful that you don’t burn any bridges though; set yourself up as a supplier rather than a competitor.

reunions and social gatherings and enjoy all that the Fair has to offer,” added Moses.

Doug Stewart, the co-ordinator of the Heavy Horse Hitches show this year, said the heavy horses are a real crowd pleaser.

“We moved the heavy horse hitch classes in front of the grandstand over the last three years. The six horse hitch is certainly something unique to Alberta.

There will over 100 head of heavy horses this year.

“The exhibitors come from all over and the horses are owned by people from both Canada and the United States. Saturday is a huge day at the Fair and Saturday afternoon is always a highlight with the six horse hitch classes combined with the finals of the Cowboy Mounted Shooters,” said Stewart.

“It’s unique to have it here in Vermilion and combined with the cowboy shooting finals on Saturday it’s truly a great show.”

Stewart added that the grandstand was full last year for this event.

The Fair will start on Thursday, July 23 and wrap up on Saturday, July 25 with a fireworks display following the final grandstand performance.

The 109th Vermilion Fair Parade

“Local Roots and Cowboy Boots” is the theme of the 109th Vermilion Agricultural Fair and Parade.

“Someone called me from Wainwright back in March to find out what the parade theme was,” said Parade Chairman Russ Cameron. “We had to decide pretty quickly,” he added.

Cameron has been with the parade committee for a total of 33 years; the last “six or seven” as Chairman he said.

“Last year we had 123 floats in the parade, including 78 horses.”

After 33 years of being involved in

the parade Cameron said he and the committee have learned to anticipate all scenarios, and ensure proper safety measures are put in place.

The parade is once again being held on a Thursday (July 23).

“Thursday always poses a problem to get bands,” he said. “But we have two smaller bands from Edmonton this year and our own Vermilion band.”

Apar t from the music the bands provide during the parade, Cameron stressed the louder the better when it comes to floats.

“Have lots of music and make lots of noise. It engages the audience.” It’s also

a great way to get your business noticed said Cameron.

There is no pre-registration for this event and no entry fee. Floats should be set up by 9:30 a.m. on July 23 for judging that begins at 10:00 a.m.

There are ten categories for this year’s judging: Commercial, Decorated Cars, Out-of-Town, Antique, Senior Organization, Pioneer, Junior Organization, Decorated Bikes, Comic, and Decorated Ponies.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. sharp and the route will follow its traditional path beginning at Lakeland Mall and down Railway Avenue turning right at 49th

Street, then left at 50th Avenue where it will continue until 51st Street where it will turn south, returning to Railway Avenue and continues on this path, merging with 50th Avenue and ending at the Vermilion Health Care Centre.

There will be a fund-raising barbeque at the Vermilion Health Centre following the parade from noon to 1:30 p.m.

“This is the best committee to be on,” said Cameron.

“I’ll probably keep doing it even when I’m in a nursing home.”

This year there will be an expanded version of the popular Chicken Show at the Vermilion Fair called ‘The Poultry Show.’

Who would have known that there were so many different show classes of poultry, from standard chickens, waterfowl, bantam chickens, geese, turkeys to helmeted guinea fowl?!

Well, Charlotte Wasylik sure knows!

Seventeen-year old Wasylik has been the Ag Society Committee chairperson for the last three years and she is also the chair of this year’s Poultry Show.

The young energ eti c c ommit tee head is excited about the first Poultry show that will be a greatly expanded Chicken Show from previous years and will run in conjunction with Canadian Heritage Breeds.

“I’ve been involved in the chicken show for the past couple of years and I just wanted the show to grow and expand a bit more and have the same calibre as the beef shows and the heavy horse shows where they have a judge that knows what they are looking for in those specific breeds whether it’s chicken, geese or turkeys.

“We have a lot of local poultry owners in the surrounding areas that will be entering their poultry on the day. We

like to get people from different areas and local poultry enthusiasts to come and show. Because this is our first year, not many people know about the show yet but hopefully in the coming years every class will be full.”

Wasylik lives on a farm nor th of Vermilion and farms over 100 chickens herself.

“There is nothing like your own free range eggs and we get about 100 eggs a day. I will be bringing in some of my own chickens for the show as well.”

With the addition of waterfowl including heavy ducks, medium ducks and bantam ducks and geese, turkeys and helmeted guinea fowl and the egg show Wasylik hopes there will be increased spectators and exhibitor interest. Some of the st and ar d c hi c ken’s c las ses include American, Asiatic, Mediterranean, Continental and English. “ Hopefully nex t year we can add some new classes like pheasants for example,” added Wasylik.

There will also be junior classes, an egg show, and a pen-of-three (two hens, one rooster) class that can be any kind of chicken. They don’t have to be purebred for the pen of three classes.

The Poultry Show will be held at the traditional Vermilion Fair pen on Saturday, July 25 starting at 10 a.m.

Cowboy Mounted Shooters Set To Ride Again

“Things are really picking up,” said event organizer Duncan MacMillan of the 50 to 70 Cowboy Mounted Shooters who are expected to take the stage at Lakeland College’s Equine Centre during the Vermilion Fair on July 24 and 25.

“We have 28 shooters registered now, and we have a regular following that come to see us,” said MacMillan.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is really easy and exciting to watch he added.

It is a timed event that involves

elements of barrel racing, pole bending, reining and, of course, shooting.

Ten balloon targets are strategically placed along the course and the competitor with the fastest time and the least amount of missed targets is the winner.

A five second penalty is incurred for any missed target.

There are three categories: pistol, rifle and shotgun and they are loaded with black powder blanks.

“Competitors come from as far away as Manning to Oxbow, SK to compete,” said MacMillan.

“Vermilion is the center stop in the Summer Saddle Series. Shooters have already competed in Paradise Hill, SK and Viking. Vermilion is next followed by Irma and Lloydminster will mark the final leg of the series.

Results are tallied by the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA), the governing body of all shooting in North America.

At the moment Gar y Couch and Heather MacKenzie are leading in the Canadian standings.

“We will only be shooting twice at the Fair this year,” said MacMillan. In previous years the competition has taken place over three days. The reason MacMillan cited for reducing the competition to two days from three is quite simple.

“We want to go to the Fair.”

On Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25 the shooters will compete at Lakeland College’s Equine Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The top 20 shooters will go on to the finals that will take place in tandem with the Heavy Horse Hitch Show in front of the Vermilion Grandstand from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

When there is a lull in the Hitch show the Cowboy Mounted Shooters move in until the horses are hitched for the next class.

Six .22 lever action rifles will be handed out to the winners.

“There are generous sponsors in Vermilion,” said MacMillan.

“The contestants love Vermilion. They are looking forward to coming here and some will be camping out here.”

Crowe Appointed Lakeland’s Vice President

Michael Crowe has been appointed Lakeland College’s vice president, academic, a position he’s filled on an interim basis since last November. “ I have a great appreciation for Michael’s student-centred, empowering leadership style. The teams he has worked with at Lakeland have been innovative, cohesive and very strategic,” says Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president of Lakeland College. “I’m confident that in his role as VP, academic he will continue to excel as he works closely with our academic schools, leadership teams and service areas to ensure our programming is innovative.”

As vice president, academic, Crowe is responsible for the planning and management of the college’s academic programs.

This includes developing, maintaining and supporting teaching excellence, and creating an environment that supports learning and personal growth for students and faculty.

Crowe started his career at Lakeland College in 2003 as an instructor and taught in the School of Environmental Sciences until 2011. Other positions he’s held at the college include coordinator of program evaluation and instructional development and, most recently, dean of teaching and learning. He also has experience leading international projects.

“Lakeland College has a 102-year history of delivering high quality academic

programming and is a leader in studentcentered, hands-on training. We have a very talented team of faculty and staff that is committed to providing our students with a world class education. I’m obviously excited and honored to be part of that,” says Crowe, vice president, academic.

Crowe has a BSc and MSc from the University of Lethbridge and a diploma in renewable resource management from Lethbridge College. Crowe and his wife Cathy have lived in Vermilion for the past 12 years and have five school-aged children.

“Lacer The Racer” Golf Bash

The fifth “Lacer the Racer” golf bash organized by Peter Walsh, an instructor for Lakeland College and Coach of the Lakeland College rowing team, is set to tee off on Saturday, July 25 in conjunction with the Vermilion Fair.

Since its inception the “golf bash,” as Walsh refers to it, underwent a name change in its second year following the death of former Lakeland College student Lacey Longworth.

“She participated in the first one,” said Walsh.

Longworth was killed in a car accident shortly after graduating from Lakeland and this prompted Walsh to rename the event “Lacer the Racer” (her nickname) in honour of her.

“She was an awesome person. She was team captain, MVP for two years in a row...she rowed with the team for four years; that is exceptional.”

A scholarship for rowers was also started in honour of Longworth.

“We started out with one $500 scholarship. Now we are looking at four $500 scholarships,” said Walsh.

Each year the tournament raises between $2000 to $3000 in donations that go toward the rowing scholarships.

Originally the golf bash started out as a way to engage young alumni of the College.

“I was astounded to find out how many come back for the Fair,” said Walsh.

He added that this specific group also said they wanted something easy, inexpensive and casual.

“A lot of them are still paying off student loans,” he added.

“Golf, steak and the Beer Garden at the Fair hit the mark. It’s very casual – more of a golf bash than a tournament.

We break into foursome’s or ‘fivesomes’ depending on the number of people who show up. Both sides of Lacey’s family come out every year. It has become like a family reunion.”

The event has grown from having only eight participants in the first year to nearly 40 in the second year.

“We usually get between 25 and 40 people out; the Vermilion Golf Club is very accommodating,” said Walsh.

“We usually provide them with a list of names a couple of days ahead of time.”

Registration will take place at noon on

July 25 with the golf bash getting underway at 1 p.m.

The cost is $42 for 9 holes of golf and a steak dinner. If you are not interested in golfing but would like to have the steak dinner the cost is $22. (Donations over $20 are tax-deductible and

can be made the day of the tournament.)

“It’s very flexible,” said Walsh. “And it’s a great way to get together and remember Lacey.”

“Seeing from behind someone else’s eyes” is considered empathy. Enclosed is a poem about aging. Entitled The Crabbit Old Woman.

What do you see, nurses, what do you see? What are you thinking when you look at me?

A Crabbit old woman, not very wise.

Uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes.

Who dribbles her food and makes no reply. When you say in a loud voice, “I do wish you’d try”. Who seems not to notice the things that you do, and forever is losing a stocking or shoe.

Who, unresisting or not, let’s you do as you will. With bathing and feeding , the long day to fill. Is that what you’re thinking, is that what you see? The open your eyes – you’re not looking at me!

I’ll tell you who I am as I sit here so still, As I move at your bidding, as I eat at your will, I’m a small child often, with father and mother, brothers and sisters who love one another; A young girl at sixteen with wings on her feet, dreaming that soon now a lover she’ll meet; A bride soon at twenty- my heart gives a leap, remembering the vows that I

promised to keep. At twenty –five now I have young of my own.

Society does not often recognise the grief pain that the elderly experience.

They lose siblings and the family circle

is broken and the person is gone they could share their history with. When one is younger there are dreams of the future and memories to make but for the elderly looking ahead offers only advanced aging and memories that have been made and have nowhere to be shared and no one to share them with.

This is the time in the elderly person ‘s life that there may be increased signs of isolation and depression. They may have thoughts of suicide. Were you aware that the elderly are equally at risk for attempts of suicide and the completion of suicide.

The elderly in their sunset years face many of life’s trauma’s too. Loneliness, losses, depression, change and trauma. I believe that our society overlooks the emotional needs of the elderly. Elderly need support, love and understanding too and often feel not as useful any more, unimportant and unloved in the busy world of the people who are still in their working years.

For those who have been impacted by the loss of a loved senior to suicide there is the pain and grief and also the stigma associated with suicide. Support can help to reduce stigma and help to know you are not alone. Awareness of this grief process and understanding helps to empower people and in turn

they can become a support to others in the community. As community we need to “Seek to Understand”.

May you take an opportunity in the coming months to reach out and “Seek to Understand” an elderly person in your community, learn from them and allow them to know how important they are in the world around them.

Mental Health and Mental Wellness are priorities in community and society now, not only for the young and growing population but for those in their sunset years.

On September 12 th 2015 an Walk of Remembrance will be held at Bud Miller Park Lloydminster.

This walk is an opportunity for communities to come together in support of those who have lost a loved one and also to become more aware of Mental Illness and what can be done to achieve Mental Wellness in our communities.

The walk will be at 3 p.m. with speakers and music and refreshments and an opportunity for people to increase their support by visiting.

Window And Balcony Safety - Protecting Your Children

Alberta Health Services Submitted

As summer temperatures rise outside, many parents open their windows or balcony doors to let in fresh air. Unfortunately, along with the fresh air comes a significant risk to children.

For a curious child, an open window or balcony door can pose the risk of a serious fall.

Every year, Alberta Health Services (AHS) EMS responds to multiple calls related to children injured after falling out of windows or off of balconies. In 2014, 20 Albertan children were seen in our

Emergency Departments, due to these kinds of falls, and of those 20, 17 were less than seven years of age.

Always take these steps to prevent falls, and keep your children safe this summer season, and year round: Move furniture such as cribs, beds, stools, and change tables away from windows to prevent access to them.

Install window guards on all windows on the second floor and above. These act like gates in front of windows.

Consider installing safety devices which limit the distance in which a window can open. to 10cm (4 inch).

MARJORIE THOMPSON passed away May 22, 2015 in Vegreville, Ab. at the age of 89 years. Marjoie was born Nov. 3, 1925 the only child of Lloyd & Gladys Oxby in Edgerton, Ab. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Joesph. She is lovingly remembered by her children Elaine (Ron) Riopel of Westlock, Ab., Lloyd (Laura) of Kelowna, B.C., Roy (Helen) of Vermilion, Harvey (Marjorie), Laurilee (John) Grant of Kitscoty and Dean (Cindy) of Lloydminster.

Marjorie was blessed to have seventeen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

This is a small portion of the eulogy written and presented by her granddaughter Christine Thompson "Marj had a warm heart and gentle spirit that made her an incredibly likeable person to be around. She loved to laugh and spent a lot of time being teased by her kids, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Marj was known for her large vegetable gardens and her ability to make wonderful meals.

As a mother Marj was a strong woman who did the best she could for her children. She was always there and willing to help her kids no matter how old they were. As a Grandma, Marj was second to none. Us grand kids were important, and we mattered. Even though she had many grandchildren, she had an ability to make each and every one of us feel special. Thank you for the memories Grandma and for the unconditional love you showed to every one of us. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten and we take great comfort in knowing you're finally home in Grandpa Joe's arms- where you belong. " THANK YOU. Marjories family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at St. Michael's Manor, Veg., for their care and attention. Invasive Species Detected In Vermilion

To date there have been seven boats detected province-wide with Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) and almost half of those (3) have been identified by seasonal workers at the inspection centre set up at the Vermilion weigh station.

As of the end of March this year legislation was passed that made boat inspections mandatory.

Since the May long-weekend, a total

of 520 boats have been inspected at the Vermilion inspection site, and 44 of those boats have been considered to be high risk. Of those 44 high risk boats three have contained the AIS non-native species known as quagga and/or zebra mussels.

The provincial total since the May longweekend is 6,757 boats (motorized and non-motorized) that have been inspected with seven boats having been identified as “mussel fouled.”

AIS Operations Lead for Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, Crystal Sawchuk said, “The total (boats inspected) last year was 3,700. We’ve almost doubled that already.”

There are only three provinces and five states that are not considered to be high risk in terms of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) and Alberta is one of them.

“We’d like to keep it that way,” said Sawchuk.

The only provinces that aren’t infected are Alber ta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The only five non-infected states are Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Wyoming, she added.

One of the factors contributing to a high risk boat status is whether the vessel has been in a known infected province or state in the last 30 days.

The Alberta government first established an AIS prevention program to protect Alberta’s waterways from the spread of non-native species such as quagga and zebra mussels three years ago.

“The first two years were voluntary,” said Sawchuk. “Fifty per cent of boaters still weren’t stopping.”

If these mussels were to reach Alberta’s waterways it would cost an estimated $75,000,000 to deal with the issue said Sawchuk.

“They are filter feeders. One mussel can filter through one litre of water per day.”

They completely affect the biodiversity of the water. They also have no natural predators. They can infiltrate water management infrastructure and irriga-

tion systems by clogging pipes and can also adversely affect fishing, tourism and recreational activities in the province added Sawchuk.

A new project has been launched to increase the detection of AIS by using trained dogs to sniff out the mussels during predicted high volume times.

Three teams comprised of one handler and one dog per team, just finished training at the end of June with experts in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife who have been using dogs to detect mussels for over a decade.

A team will be coming to the Vermilion weigh station sometime in August said Sawchuk.

“They augment the program”, she added. “They are very accurate at detecting mussels and they can sniff them out at night.”

Even so, Sawchuk said, “We’ll never catch them all...we really need a behaviour change. Boaters need to drain their boats at source.”

The message to clean, drain and dry boats has been prominent from the beginning.

“Public awareness is increasing a lot in the last two years.”

Bypassing an open inspection station while pulling a watercraft (motorized or non-motorized) may result in hefty fines and/or prison time as it is in violation of the newly amended Alberta Fisheries Act. Mandatory inspections will run until September.

The province also has a 24-hour hotline 1-855-336-2628 (BOAT) to report any concerns the public may have about mussels.
