Opening Date Announced For Eastalta Co-op

Phase Two of construction on the new Eastalta Co-op store is complete and the President of the Board of Directors, Dwight Miller, announced the date that the store will be open to customers during a Customer Appreciation Night on June 18.

“It (the new store) will be re-opening with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Friday, June 26,” he said.

“The old store will be closed at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (June 24) and it will be closed Thursday, all day (June 25).”

The official Grand Opening of the new store will not take place until the end of phase four, the completion of the parking lot, said General Manager of the Vermilion Eastalta Co-op Gerald Hiebert. This will take place after the completion of phase three, the demolition of the old store. “ We are b e g in nin g p ha s e t hre e immediately,” said Hiebert. He added that people might not notice, however, as there are several things that need to

be done inside the store before demolition can begin, such as dealing with gas lines and draining coolant from the refrigerators.

During a sneak peek at the store on Thursday, June 18 Food and Store Manager, Mike Gaudet said customers can expect to see product selection increase by two to three times in most areas in the new 30,000 square foot facility.

The bakery department’s output will increase fivefold said Gaudet.

“We have two ovens instead of one and two proofers.”

“We can bake bread all day,” said Hiebert. “If we run out of hot dog buns, we can bake some more within a twohour timeframe.”

Food and Liquor Operations Manager (Wainwright), Bob Nienaber said overall there will be 2,500 new items in-store, including more specialty products like gluten and lactose-free items as well as a new International section.

“Our prices are matched with our Wainwright store,” said Hiebert. “And

they compete with Wal-Mart.

“This means a total of 10,000 items have been reduced,” said Nienaber.

Although Hiebert conceded they will never be able to compete with a WalMart store dollar for dollar, the difference between the two can be measured by service and community commitment.

“We could have renovated the old store,” he said. “But the new facility will be set for 25 years. We are committed to the Town.”

Eastalta Co-op’s commitment also extends to the environment as it donates 5 cents to a green initiative every time a customer brings in one of their own grocery bags. The new facility has also been designed to reduce its carbon footprint.

“Our lighting has doubled but because we are using LED lighting we will be using less energy,” said Gaudet.

Customers can also expect the store hours to remain the same and cash back will once again be offered as an option on the U-scan terminals said Hiebert. “ We listened to customers. They

wanted it, so it’s back.”

One thing he knows customers will be asking about is the bulletin board.

Hiebert said he hasn’t found a place for it yet, but he will.

The large number of windows and the “unique” rectangular shape of the building, “has forced us to be creative,” added Hiebert.

Because the one-story store floor will not accommodate administrative offices without compromising sales space, work will begin on construction of a new 6,930 square foot administrative building where the old Creamery used to be.

The same company, Johnston Bros., has been awarded the contract. It is due for completion in early 2016, he added and it will also have retail space for three tenants. “ These are exciting times folks,” said Hiebert during his speech at the Customer Appreciation night at the Vermilion Regional Centre.

“Tonight is about Vermilion. What a year it has been. This Co-op is committed to this community.”

Crisis Line Walk And Run Fundraiser

A big crowd of suppor ters turned out for the Vermilion and Area Crisis Line walk/run fundraiser in the Vermilion Provincial Park on June 18.

After all the walkers and runners registered, the event started at the CN Station and the course included 2km, 5km or 10km lengths along the Vermilion River Reservoir trail.

“This is our 4th year doing the walk.

It was started in memory of my mom, Susan Howard. It was her dream to have the walk,” said Vermilion Crisis Line Chair Amber Sanford.

Crisis Line is a number for anyone to call if they need emotional support, supportive listening, crisis intervention (including violence, abuse, and suicide), and referrals to other agencies or to get suppor t and information regarding being concerned about someone else in distress.

“It’s really for anyone who just needs someone to talk to, like someone who

has lost a loved one or who has a new born baby that won’t stop cr ying or just anyone experiencing crisis in their lives,” said Sanford. “ We h ave s k i l l e d l i s te n e r s w h o answer the phone. They are non judgemental, genuine and empowering. All the calls from this number are answered in Edmonton. Our statistics show that the calls received are from all over Alberta not just the Vermilion area,” said Sanford.

The Crisis Line Association is a volunteer non-profit organization. The volunteers are of vital importance to the program’s operations and fulfill every role. “ We are always looking for new members and volunteers; if anyone wishes to join we would love to hear from them,” added Sanford.

The Crisis Line is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to anyone who is experiencing difficulty in their lives and needs someone to talk to.

The male suspect is described as being Caucasian, approximately six feet tall with wavy, short to medium length dirty blond or light brown hair.

The male is believed to be approximately 3 0 year s old and has ver y noticeable neck tattoos. When last

seen, the male was wearing a white t-shirt and khaki shorts.

The female suspect is believed to be between 20-30 years old and has a medium or olive coloured complexion.

The female has longer than shoulder length dark hair with possibly one blond streak in it. When last seen, she was wearing a black spaghetti strap dress with black Puma sneakers with a red logo on them.

I am not a huge TV watcher, and I of te n fi n d mys e l f looking at the name of a program and quickly skipping by it without thought or reason, but I have discovered lately that maybe I am being a bit presumptuous.

My son was sitting watching one of his favourite shows a few weeks back and when I asked him what he was watching he said “Sons Of Anarchy.” I quickly jumped to conclusions and said “Come on, I don’t want to watch that garbage.”

Dear Editor, When it comes to accidents, it ’s c ommon to think , oh, it will never happen to us. That is what we thought until our six-year- old son, Roan, a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, lost his leg in a lawn mower accident.

Never Judge A Show By Its Name

He proclaimed, it was one of the best shows he has watched in a long time, but off I went to find a free TV where I could watch one of the same old shows I have seen a million times.

Then one day, I gave in and sat with him to watch it, of course he had to catch me up in a very quick synopsis, as I had missed the first three seasons. Once that was done and I kind of understood what the show was about, who the characters were and actually watched a full show I was hooked.

The show grant you, is not for the feint of heart. It is packed with some pretty extreme violence; times when even I had to look away, but the storyline is what got

me hooked the most.

Without going into a huge explanation of what happens in the show, I can tell you that it is based around a blended family made up by the Morrow/Teller family who deal in prostitution, drugs, guns and other not so legal ways of making money; thus the violence to keep their turf. The club does not take betrayal well by a member, which will cause your untimely demise.

However, if the member is loyal to the club the club will do anything in its power to protect each and every member and their families.

Now, I am not saying we should all go out and join biker clubs that dabble in illegal activities, and I am certainly not saying

A few years ago, Roan was riding on a lawn mower with an adult when he fell off and severed his left leg at the knee.

As he was airlifted by helicopter to the hospital, we wondered if we were going to see him again.

With lawn cutting season here, we want to help spread Roan’s message

across the country that kids should never be around a lawn mower. It doesn’t matter how good you are with machinery, it just takes a moment for a lifechanging accident to happen. Today, Roan is an active and energetic child thanks to help from The War Amps with financial assistance for artificial limbs,

that violence is the best way to protect our families. I just came to the realization that we often judge things, whether it is a type of food, a different race, a different lifestyle, anything we come across which we are not familiar with before we even give it a try. We can often be very narrow minded, maybe we need to open our minds a little more to experience new things.

Like I learned, never judge a show by its name! Yes, it is about a biker club who is involved in some pretty hefty crimes, but it is a show very much about family, loyalty and brotherhood. It taught me a pretty huge lesson, experience it before you judge it.

Town Council Applies For Grant Funding

The Town of Vermilion has applied for funding under the new Canada 150 Grant.

The program was announced on May 19 and the application deadline was June 17.

The program provides matching grants with the potential for up to $500,000 in funding.

Town Council passed a motion on June 2 authorizing the Town of Vermilion to submit a grant application to the new Canada 150 Grant for a Trail System upgrade.

“The multi-use trail extension and u p grad e woul d c ost an estimate d $860,000,” said Director of Community

Services Shawn Bell.

“If the grant is approved the Town will receive 50 per cent of the total cost in funding and the Town is then required to come up with the other 50 per cent,” said Bell.

The project applied for aims to encompass four areas of improvement or extension to the existing trail system.

The proposed trail system upgrade would be starting at Beckie Scott Trail on the west end, moving east along 50th Avenue past the Medical Clinic to 54th Street.

“We would connect to downtown from the new proposed Brennan North Subdivision while also resurfacing the stretch

Women’s Connection Summer Salad Supper

The Vermilion Women’s Connection group held a ‘Summer Salad Supper’ at the School of Hope in Vermilion on June 17. Women mingled and gathered for the event in celebration of summer’s arrival. The Women’s Connection group is under the umbrella of Stonecroft Canada.

Stonecroft is a national Christian charity that supports the efforts of Christian women. The Vermilion Women’s Connection group has been in existence since it was founded in 1983.

Stonecroft will celebrate their 50th anniversary next year. After dinner there was entertainment for the evening with music from the ‘Joyful Melody Trio’ vocal group from Barrhead, Alberta.

of trail from Harcus Road (east of the College) to the Provincial Building along College Drive,” said Bell.

“The objective would be to improve connectivity and extend the multi-use trail system in the Town of Vermilion, promoting the value of well-being and exercise and encouraging our citizenry to interact with and enjoy nature.”

Council considered the construction a joint/school facility, such as an outdoor rink that is in need of a major renovation or working with the school on a new outdoor track probably at J.R. Robson.

This was ruled out by Council as it did not qualify for funding because the applicant must own the land or have a long term

lease on the land.

The grant calls for upgrades to facilities and not new facilities and projects need to be completed by 2018.

Council agreed that it was important to consider the overall benefit and use to the community, while at the same time choosing a project that has the opportunity to get significant long term funding.

“These grants only come out every 4-5 years so taking advantage is important similar to the Rinc Grant in 2010, where we upgraded the Stadium, curling rink and parking areas,” said Bell. Bell provided a mock map of the proposed trail upgrades providing information and cost estimates at the meeting.

Mid - June is here already – it arrived so soon. It’s Father’s Day as well as the first day of summer this weekend; June 21st. It ’s going to be a great day and hopefully the weather cooperates a little also.

I don’t have any thing specific planned, but its one day of the year that us fathers can get away with what we like for the most part. It is way better than a bir thday…and pampering is encouraged.

For most of us fathers we had a rough stretch there for a couple months…first it was Xmas…then Valentine’s day…

Easter, and then Mother’s day to top that off. I even had the wife’s birthday and an anniversary in the middle of that.

Now for most of us guys it’s really hard to buy thoughtful gifts that are not kitchen appliances. We don’t know what women want or need; we all thought that was common knowledge.

Buying a card for all that stuff is just plain silly but god forbid if we don’t…an

E card is so simple and doesn’t cost an hour’s wages. But for some reason, that just doesn’t cut it with most women.

So anyway, we’ve been scrambling for several months with all the pressure on us fathers, so when Father’s Day comes along, we feel like kings and are so relieved we don’t have to do a thing.

Even better than that we can actually do what we want to do, and get treated nicely. Awesome day! I think I will go fishing or maybe just chillax on the couch, and walk on by the honey-do list to get a cold one!!

The deadline for the Alberta Hunting Draw applications is coming up next week. They are only available until June 25, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. If you haven’t filled out your application already, it’s fast and easy to complete online.

Then we will have to wait, like a kid at Xmas, until July 16, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. to find out our results and plan our adventures for fall. I already have all my adventures planned.

However, if I get a draw, which I am not holding my breath on; I will simply rearrange my adventures, or just take more time off. Kinda like a weeklong Father’s Day.

For those who haven’t done it yet… http://www.albertarelm.com and for those that have I wish you the best of luck. You may need it nowadays if you haven’t put in a priority for near five years on everything in some areas.

But once again I am thankful for what we do have on the bowhunting side of hunting in Alberta, so even if I strike out with 10 draws as I did last year…I still have adventures planned that I know will be exciting.

Lots of baby critters are out there right now. I will remind everyone that if you see a baby critter all alone, it doesn’t mean the parents are not close by and it’s best just to leave them be.

I had a brood of newly out of the nest magpies in the garden all week. They seem awful young. They may have made a break-out before their time. They were so young they didn’t hop very fast, let alone try to fly.

I generally let them be. They looked to be orphaned until you approached them and all heck breaks loose with every adult magpie in the area screaming at you.

I am not a big fan of magpies, and they eat at least half of the farm kitties’ and Miss Pickles’ food. But these little guys

So, I gently pick them up and set them in the tree branches to be safe. Now I know they are completely safe from the farm kitties…I still can’t figure that one out, but there are other predators in “da hood” There also is Miss Pickles’ curiosity... yup worse than a farm kitty’s. So it’s best to keep her out of trouble by moving them.

She is a 75 lb proverbial bull in china shop that one.

I’m talking about rain!! The only thing different in a jungle or a desert, everything else being equal, is rain!!

As we sur vey the planet earth, because of mountains, oceans, and the way the wind blows there is such a diversity of weather patterns that govern the amount and timeliness of how that gift is given. So, anyway, a good part of North America from here to the Gulf of Mexico conditions like soil and weather made much of all that country into a sea of grass.

With the arrival of our native people, all that grass wouldn’t or couldn’t support them. Enter the ‘Bison’. How or where they originated doesn’t really matter, all that matters is that they could convert all that grass and grassland into one gigantic pasture and the Bison proliferated like magic. The fact that they could provide all or nearly all the essentials to sustain life can’t be an accident!!

Those wonderful beasts were so well adapted for life on these plains that they

could and did survive whatever the country could throw at them until the white men came.

You see, there were no fences or roads or boundaries to speak of, not even rivers.

The Bison followed the rains to the best pasture and the native being able to be mobile followed after them!! They had perfected their methods of harvesting their flesh and hides, but you know the rigors of that were a much different situation then pushing a shopping cart around.

Seems the buffalo could hone in on where the projectiles were coming from and the hunter had to be nimble to avoid the beast until the arrow took effect. It was a wonderful life you’d think because they really didn’t ever NEED money.

The arrows, spears etc were made from local wood and the points fashioned with sharpened stone!!

So anyway now we have surveyed the land and divided it up with roads and fences and the buffalo are long gone.

We can’t kill just any animal because of ownership and seasons or like that. The native didn’t have to check brands or time; he just killed as he needed!! Some areas seem to have the benefit of the

showers and better growing conditions, but the not so lucky just get to hear about rain and sometimes don’t get enough to grow profitable crop. Happens all over the prairies, I’m sure you’ve heard the stories.

We should have perhaps taken more heed of that government man who was sent out west in the early eighteen hundreds to take a survey of this province with the aim of evaluating the potential for agriculture. Have you heard of the Palliser Triangle? It was the area Palliser noted was too dry to sustain agriculture and he reported it wasn’t suitable to have it settled with farming in mind. Seems it was so dry then the Battle River was only pools here and there and it wasn’t flowing. Guess we’ve been in a wetter spell lately, you think? Anyway a definite limiting factor in the whole prairie area is the amount of rain. There are other factors involved but rain must be present or all other factors don’t really count. A crop that doesn’t come up from lack of rain can’t freeze either, can it? If it doesn’t rain all summer there is no harvest for the rain to stop harvest either is there!! In my farming days in the area I happened to live in,

rain showers missed us and we had to hope the general rains would come often enough to help us eke out a livelihood!!

As much as I really loved the way of life I chose, I really never got by the dread of a dry , drought stricken time, as so many things were so adversely affected!! We just had to have a reasonable amount of moisture. Most years we were barely fortunate enough to get by, sometimes just barely tho.

My Uncle Herman used to remark that the Sahara desert actually got more rain than we did here. “If we didn’t have it frozen for in months a year there wouldn’t be enough moisture,” he’d so often tell us.

Well anyway, it certainly can get dry for certain, and we would do well to thank the Lord for all our blessings too. I know when I was farming the best sound I ever can remember hearing, was to lay in bed after having my crop all seeded and hearing the rain drumming off the roof.

I always wonder at the blue sky talk and think, yes it’s wonderful to have blue skies, but you know especially if you’re a man of the soil a cloudy raining sky is more likely a more welcome sight, especially if it’s been dry for a spell!!

With Fair season just around the corner, I am thinking

about all the lovely handwriting samples that will be on display throughout the County.

Ontario schools have all but eliminated handwriting instruction from their curriculum, which makes me very sentimental about this fading art.

The following is a letter I transcribed that my sister received in 1971 from her Archie comic book pen pal. She recently discovered it in a box of treasures my mother had put away for her, (right beside her Charm Camp Graduation Certificate).

It is dated June 13, 1971 and is from a girl named Jacqueline who lived (and perhaps still does), in Midlothian, Scotland.

both my sister and I were quite surprised Jacqueline had not taken the whole world by storm considering her above average intelligence, great attention to detail, overwhelming confidence and remarkable athleticism.

It is a nostalgic look at old school communication; the dying art of handwriting, the lost art of letter writing, and “pen pal-ery” in general. Plus, it is funny as heck!

Dear Erin, I am sorr y I did not write sooner, but with exams and school sports and everything I have just not had the time.

I am sports champion of the school that means I am the fastest runner in the school. For a prize I get a medal with my name on it. I go into class 1 M3 at high school after the holidays. Classes 1M1, 1M2, 1M3 are all the same. These classes are all above average intelligence. We get put into any class in first year and in third year we are graded into the right classes.

My friend Carol who lives next door to Love Jacqueline me would like to be Heather’s pen pal. xxxxxx I am sorry but I cannot send you a We love you too Jacqueline. And to picture of myself and my family this think, we would never have known just time because the spool in my camera is how much there was to love about you, if finished and at the moment I am saving you had never put pen to paper. to have my ears pierced so I could not buy a spool.

Our school teacher is quite old but she is great. We are going to buy her a present before we go to high school. Our house has just been built up and we now have upstairs. I have one of the rooms.

The key to my childhood home was a large s i l ver t h i n g. It wa s c o m m o n l y r e fe r r e d to as a skeleton key.

Sometimes I carried it on a thin strip of leather worn around my neck. When I was about 12, I discovered with some alarm that you could buy a skeleton key at MacLeod’s or Fisher’s or Beaver Lumber.

Anyone could, I mean. I used to imagine any number of people having free access to my house.

These are my thoughts as I open a dusty box retrieved from the soft darkness of a basement cupboard to find an array of keys in a ziplock bag. What doors did they once unlock, and why had I kept them? Some questions don’t have a logical answer, at least not one immediately evident. I could say that I

kept the keys due to latent aspirations of becoming an abstract metal sculptress. Maybe I could arrange, solder them together in some artistic manner, or even better, melt them down-----you know, in my smelter-----and then shape their amalgamated mass into something wondrous to behold, knowing I alone held the secret of the material’s origins: the keys to all the doors I’d ever lived behind. Ah, as is often the case, through reverie is a mystery solved.

There are many keys in the bag. A few are rusted. Do the doors they once allowed me to pass through still exist?

Does it matter? The most efficient action is to toss the whole bag into the trash and reach for the next object without pause.

My goal here, I remind myself, is to sort through and unload no longer useful ‘stuff’. Did I mention that I am not particularly efficient?

E.H. Walter School Staff Reunion

Although the weather did not fully cooperate, and the fire ban eliminated the fireside visiting, there was no shortage of enthusiasm for the E.H. Walter Staff reunion, which took place on the last weekend in May. The three day event included a get together on Friday night, brunch on Saturday, followed by a banquet that evening, and a pancake breakfast on Sunday.

The event was organized largely by Holly Garton, who felt that it would be nice to gather former staff before the old school is demolished next year. Individuals who had taught here decades ago obviously agreed, as over 100 people

open the bag, dumping the keys out in front of me. I line them up in random order. I retrieve paper and pencil, then attempt over the next hour to recall every place I’ve ever lived, even the forgettable ones. Think: creepy basement suite of an ancient hovel aka character home with windows so small they appear as a faraway sliver of hazy, opaque light.

Or a thin walled third floor apartment featuring the barely audible but everpresent soundtrack of an unhappy couple’s angry voiced exchanges. Like the Kinks’ song, All Day and All of the Night. Relentless.

We become who we are over time, each experience adding to the bundle of complex individuality through which other s may seek to define us and through which we attempt to identify ourselves. The shifting sense of belonging, the places we call home over a lifetime leave their imprint upon us, even

the ones we occupy in discomfort or fleetingly. We take a fragment of each place with us when we go. We leave a remnant of ourselves inside their bare walls.

I’m not sure if my list is all inclusive and I doubt that the bag contains a key to every place I’ve ever called home.

Surely I returned MOST of them. But there are enough here to give me pause, to reflect and attempt to retrieve from the depths of memory some sense of what my life might have been like at a specific time now past, to consider who else was present in that space, what thoughts and events occurred there. I return the keys to the bag. I have not accomplished what I’d set out to do. Oh well, let’s imagine flexibility and being subject to easy distraction as virtues. At least I resisted reaching for the next thing in the box----for today----a bundle of letters and cards held together with a thick and cracked elastic band.

Touring the old “pink” school, as it is affectionately referred to, brought back many memories for staff and students alike. Many referred to incidents that had happened so many years ago, but stuck so vividly in their minds.

You have heard that it takes money to make money, but did you know that it takes fat to burn fat?

But not just any fat will do. The type of fat must be healthy, such as the fat from avocadoes. The fat in avocados is monosaturated, and it helps to lower bad cholesterol. Amazingly this healthy fat, helps burn body fat. Avocados contain many anti-inflammatory compounds that help prevent arthritis, promote heart health and help to regulate blood sugar.

How about a chocolate pudding that helps burn fat and is healthy as well?

This pudding is thick and creamy without any dairy and without any thickeners. It is gluten-free and paleo approved. This recipe can also be adapted as a healthy chocolate icing by omitting the coconut or almond milk. If you doubled this recipe it would make about three servings or enough icing for an 8 x 8 pan of brownies.

For a gluten-free brownie, try this black bean brownie recipe.

Remember if you use this recipe for icing, the cake will always need to be refrigerated because of the low sugar content and the abundance of natural ingredients. For success the avocados must be ripe, not too hard and not over

ripe.

Healthy Chocolate Pudding /Frosting 1 avocado 1/4 cup coconut or almond milk 1 tablespoon cocoa powder 1 package of stevia natural sweetener 1 tablespoon maple syrup or raw honey Combine all the ingredients in a small food processor or blender and process until smooth.

Black Bean Brownies 1 can black beans 3 eggs 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar depending on desired sweetness 1 Tablespoon instant coffee 1/3 cup oil, such as a mixture of light olive and safflower oil 1 Tablespoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate baking

chips Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Drain and rinse the black beans. In a food processor or blender combine the black beans, eggs and oil, add the remaining ingredients except the semi-sweet dark chocolate chips. If you don’t have a food processor or blender, then you can mash the beans with a masher, and then stir in the remaining ingredients.

The semi-sweet chocolate chips can be stirred into the batter or sprinkled on top before baking. Pour into a greased 8 x 8 baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

This is a very moist cake, that you can enjoy guilt-free. Since there is no flour, this cake would be suitable for those that are intolerant to gluten or grains. For diabetics or individuals with blood sugar/ carb problems the sugar in this recipe can be substituted with 1/4 cup maple sugar and 12 packages of stevia.

New Student Award And Equine Centre Technology Upgrades On The Way Thanks To Little Ranching Donation Submitted

Lit tle Ran c hing has mad e a big investment in Lakeland College and its students.

Herb and Nita Little, owners of Little Ranching, recently donated $35,000 to Lakeland College. Of that total, $ 25,0 0 0 i s ear m ar ke d for stu d ent awards and $10,000 for improvements to the Equine Centre at the Vermilion campus.

Herb and Nita Little’s connection to the college goes back to the 1980s when they started taking care of student horses at their ranch one mile north of Vermilion. For about 15 years they provided a place for students to board their horses. Herb would often truck the horses to the Vermilion campus or other colleges where the students were participating in rodeos.

“At one point we had 18 student horses in the yard. We didn’t do that again,” says Nita with a laugh.

But the Littles enjoyed interacting with the students. “They often sat in our kitchen and chatted with us and we got to know a lot of them very well. We’ve been to their weddings and received

their birth announcements. It’s been wonderful,” she says.

When the college built additional equine facilities in the late 1990s, the Littles no longer needed to board student horses. But they continued to help students. Herb supplied roping cattle for and was a frequent donor to the Rodeo Team. “Over the years they’ve helped the college in a number of ways. This donation is a continuation of their support,” says Ron Hoffman, an instructor in the western ranch and cow horse (WRCH) program and also a close friend of the Littles.

Some of the money that the Littles donated to the Equine Centre will be used this summer to purchase new arena video equipment and a television so students in the WRCH can review lessons and the rodeo team members can study film from practices and performances.

The first Herb Little Horsemanship Award will be presented next March to a student in the WRCH program who is also involved in the rodeo club and/ or the ranch horse club. The $1,000 award will go to a student who displays

Hockey in June? Really? Well, no one was playing the sport but they definitely had their eyes glued to the NHL playoffs!

Dewberry School held a Panther pool hockey draft this spring and staff and students got a chance to pick their favorite players. At the fruition of the playoffs our victors were: Lucas Dennill (1st), Kurt McLean (2nd) and Kody Pashulka (3rd).

Each winner was presented with a little gift for their wise choice of players. Great picks, guys! Do you think the NHL could use your expertise in making the next dream team?

Several lines were crossed when the junior/senior high Outdoor Education classes ventured out into the wilderness at Whitney Lakes Provincial Park for their yearend activity. Here they got up close and personal with wildlife as they hiked around the lake, bird watching, and even stopping to play some leadership games. At the conclusion of the hike some of them cast their lines along the shore and Jelena Parr and Kaiden Brett both reeled in a catch.

What a great way to finish off such an exciting day!

Alberta Beverage Container Recycling visited our school and gave presentations to each elementary classroom. They taught the students about how beverage containers are recycled, what products are made from the recycled material and the importance of recycling for our environment.

Thank you to Mrs. Gray and her team of volunteers for the wonderful lunch and to Mr. Wasylik for organizing the Track Meet.

An excited group of Grade 2 students boarded the bus early Monday morning to go see the Dinosaur Unearthed exhibit at the Telus World of Science in Edmonton.

The students were thrilled to see the lifesized dinos and to participate in the many interactive displays, which were both entertaining and educational. After visiting galleries they participated in “Scales

and Tails”, a program about a variety of creatures. They even got to touch a corn snake. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Congratulations to all our young kindergarten students who celebrated their graduation this week. It was a wonderful celebration showcasing an amazing

Elementary students will be swimming on Thursday, while the Middle Level goes to Lloydminster to see “Jurassic World”.

Students can come on Friday to pick up their Report Cards.

Amin Tran and future wife Rebecca Iris are about to embark on a four-week road trip across Canada with their classic vintage Boler trailer in tow. Tran is originally from Vancouver, B.C. but came to Alberta because the business prospects looked good here he said.

“I came here because of the friendly business climate and not long after found a solid stable Glass Company to build on” Tran heard about the business through some friends who live in Vermilion and when he came to visit he saw some business opportunities with real estate.

“After my road trip across Canada I’m coming back here to look for my next opportunity. It’s a nice community. And it’s easy to get things done with many resources and support.”

Tran said he has a couple ideas for his new business, but nothing to confirm as of yet.

For now, Tran is looking forward to his road trip and also wanted to thank his fiancé “for supporting him,” he smiled and added “...and for putting up with me.”

One thing is certain said Tran.

“I’ll be back……………for the Fair. It’s definitely one of a kind.”

Rapid Runs At Wainwright Stampede

The 62nd Annual Wainwright Stampede and Rodeo opened another action packed Stampede June 18 – 21 at the Wainwright Rodeo Grounds, hosted

by Wainwright Stampede and Rodeo of Alberta. The four day event filled the grandstand nightly and fans cheered on the action.

“The rain has stayed away this year and the weather has been exceptional,”

said Stampede Association President Art Melin.

“We’ve had four remarkable rodeo performances and the crowds have been amazing too,” added Melin.

The Chuckwagons ran prior to the rodeo and competed over the four days.

Wainwright and the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association have been in partnership for 30 years since 1984.

On June 8, the Grade 6 classes attended JR Robson for a day, taking on the role of the Grade 7 class.

They went through a fairly typical day, so they would know what to expect next year. They got to watch “elephant toothpaste” being made, and tried to pass Mr. Campbell’s “intelligence test.” Thanks to the JR staff for a very helpful day. A special thanks to Mrs. Hart for lunch.

On the afternoon of June 12, the Grade 5 students travelled to the Vermilion Provincial Park for their annual wetlands field trip. They were met there by local Conservation Officer Gary Walsh. He explained the benefits the wetland brings to the area. The students went to the river

Forty-four students, accompanied by 14 adult supervisors, experienced two terrific ziplines, a huge rock wall, archery, a low obstacles course, and a cable cross challenge.

They also experienced an athletic training session and a less strenuous walk through the forest. They had fun playing a massive game of capture-the-flag, vari-

Pam, Karen, Donna and other volunteers made a yummy supper for everyone to enjoy. We appreciate all the volunteers and supporters of our hot lunch program.

Grade 1 had such a great learning opportunity at the Vermilion Public Library on June 16. Two biologists from the University of Alberta came to teach the students

science curriculum. The session was very hands on and interactive and students learned about various forms of animal communication, adaptations of animals, and their needs. They also had a chance to build their own insect using various parts to make it a superbug. Thank you to the staff at the library for bringing such a great experience to the students of our community.

Celebrate Canada Day With A Taste Of Vermilion

Canada Day celebrations are just around the corner. The Taste of Vermilion, organized by The Good Life Institute, will run in conjunction with the Canada Day celebrations and take place at the soccer fields in the Vermilion Provincial Park on Tuesday, June 30.

The Taste of Vermilion event will allow people to experience local culinary arts with food tasting experiences and try different summer beverage selections in the outdoor beer gardens.

“Last year there were 300 people at the Canada Day celebrations in the Vermilion Provincial Park so we are hoping to have a great turn out. There will be lots of variety and food options. We also hope that the weather will be nice so that people can bring their lawn chairs along,”

said The Good Life Institute Coordinator Colleen Berg.

“This will be one in four events organized by The Good Life Institute for the year. Food tickets will be priced at $2 each and drinks tickets can be purchased for $4 each,” said Berg.

A Taste of Vermilion will host some of the best food vendors from Vermilion and the area including Anthony’s Classic Grill, Wendito’s, McDonald’s Family Foods, Sammy’s Restaurant, Serotonin Chocolates, Baba Jenny’s Ukrainian Foods and The Cheesiry. Beverage vendors in the beer garden will include Ribstone Creek Brewery and Mac’s Liquor Store.

How long have you been married, and if you have children - how many do you have?

“Bert Welsh and I were married August 17, 1949. We bought my folks farm 1950 and went farming. We celebrated our 51st Anniversary in 2000. We had two sons Marvin and Glenn. Bert passed away January 2001. I have five special grandchildren.”

2. What has the role of the farmwife meant to you?

“Farming was a wonderful life. Bert and

I worked together. We had cattle, pigs, chickens, pet dog and cats (outside). Bert had his saddle horse for a few years.

Loved harvest time. Bert combined and I drove the grain truck. When the boys grew up, they were a great help. I loved my garden, little orchard, flowers, and mowing the lawn. The farm was our happy family life. Wonderful memories.”

3. Do you have any words of advice for women who may be marrying a farmer today?

“Farming is a great family life.”

This last week of school has students using up the remainder of their academic energy to study for finals and Diploma exams before relaxing over summer break. Teachers are administering exams, supervising study hall, marking assignments and final projects, reviewing inventory of supplies and equipment, rearranging their rooms, entering marks, and writing report cards before recovering from the aftermath of the year.

J. R.’s Outdoor and Physical Education programs have an inventory of bicycles that are being sold for $50.00 each.

ATB Presentation To Vermilion Allied Arts The Vermilion ATB Branch made the cheque presentation for $1,000 to the Allied Arts on June 16. “ATB strives to support the community in sports and with the arts. Habitat BBQ Fundraiser Raises $1,095

Eastalta Co-op partnered with Habitat for Humanity and helped to sponsor a BBQ fundraiser at FOCUS on Thursday, June 18. The proceeds totalling $1,095 will go toward completing the second Habitat housing project in Vermilion. Communications Coordinator Elina Castro said the (Eastalta) Co-op has been a great supporter of the project. She also added that a receptacle for recyclable bottle donations has been set up at the site on 48B Avenue so donations can be dropped off at any time. The bottle drive will contribute to the fundraiser.

“It can work,” said Castro. Committee Chair Linda Jacejko said they are very thankful they have also received another donation from the province. “It will help move us along.” The house was presented to the new owners, Brandy Robertson and her two children 6-year old Entasia and 3-year old Ezaelia on May 29. Cheque Presentation

MP Leon Benoit presented a cheque at the Fire Hall in Dewberry to the Dewberry Seniors’ Centre on Saturday, June 13 in the amount of $16,334. The grant is under the New Horizons for Seniors Program, whose mandate is “to support communitybased projects led or inspired by seniors.”

He congratulated Dewberr y Seniors’ Centre President, Margaret West and commended all the members who made it happen through the application process.

“We are redoing three pool tables and the flooring under the pool tables,” said West.

Music Student Wins Provincial Competition In Percussion At SMFA Submitted

Josh Sandercock snared top spot in a class at the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association (SMFA) Provincial Finals Competition earlier this month.

Sandercock, a percussion student with Bruce Landmark at Lakeland College, competed at both the provincial and the provincial national level during the competition in Saskatoon June 5 to 7. He played three pieces for the national class and a snare drum piece for the provincial class.

Sandercock won his provincial class and did very well at the national level. The national level of competition saw him compete against a 25-year-old master’s student who plays percussion with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.

“It was exciting to compete with such talented individuals at this level. It was a great opportunity to see what others are doing, what music they are studying and the techniques the adjudicators are looking for at this level of competition,” says Sandercock.

The 16-year-old started taking piano lessons at Lakeland College and also participated in the college’s theatre program, prior to studying percussion.

He recently completed his Grade 6 Royal Conservatory of Canada percussion exam and received the highest mark in Saskatchewan, which garnered him a gold medal.

Sandercock and Bri Harland, a Lakeland College voice student, qualified for the SMFA after excelling at the 2015 Lloydminster Kiwanis Music Festival.

“The recognition of our Lakeland College students at this level emphasizes and reinforces the talent and dedication that is at work here in our Performing Arts community,” says Mona Smith, facilitator of the performing arts program. “We have an extremely talented and dedicated

group of instructors who work diligently to help their students reach their goals in music and the performing arts.”

Harland studies voice with Kathryn Edwards, and competed in three voice categories: up-tempo musical theatre, ballad musical theatre and intermediate girl’s voice. While Harland did not receive the top placing in her classes

(they only hand out a first place prize), she competed in classes with up to 19 participants and had exceptional performances.

“I learned a lot from the experience,” says Harland, adding that she received great feedback from the adjudicators. “I was pleased I was able to compete at the provincial level and represent our

community.”

Lakeland’s performing arts program offers lessons at the Lloydminster campus in brass, bass guitar, voice, guitar, percussion, saxophone, flute, piano, drums, violin and cello. Beginner guitar and drum lessons are available at the Vermilion campus. For information please visit lakelandcollege.ca.

Guest speakers took turns at the podium to congratulate the County on the anniversary including Minburn County Reeve Eric Anderson. The long-time resident of the County said his great-grandfather homesteaded in the area and the family farm has since seen six generations of Andersons on the land.

Anderson gave acknowledgement to the Council, past and present, as well as the staff for much of its success.

County Manager Dave Marynowich said he has seen much growth and technology changes within his many years with the County.

Shirley McNaughtan, partner with Reynolds Mirth Richards and Farmer who have worked with the County on a number of matters, said in the early 1990s their firm helped the County in resolv- (AAMDC). This issue proved to be an their firm has worked with the County they have never seen any issues in the finance side of things. She congratulated the County’s accounting department on the work they do.

Vegreville Drag Racing

The racing was good at the Vegreville Drag Racing Association’s (VDRA) race on Saturday, May 30. About 30 cars raced and apart from it being a little overcast with a slight wind, the racing was good and the track temperature was 73 degrees fahrenheit. Something For Everyone At Three Cities Fair

Fair weather set the tone for the 43rd Annual Three Cities Fair and the 13th Annual Bull a Rama in Paradise Valley that ran from Friday June 19 to Sunday June 21.

Councillor Daryl Watt and Reeve for the County of Vermilion was impressed with the volunteerism from the town and the agricultural community.

“I’m here to support the community,” said Watt who added he was also there to cheer on his 4-year old grandson Dane in the Bike Rodeo and Tractor Pull that took place on Main Street after the pancake breakfast on Saturday.

Registration volunteer Talina Sunderland agreed it was the best turnout they have had in three years due to the event being rained out the previous two years.

“We had 40 kids registered in the Bike Rodeo and 31 for the Tractor Pull.”

Children who registered for the Bike Rodeo were run through a bike safety checklist by volunteer firefighters with the Paradise Valley Fire Department. Firefighter Ray Burlet said it’s a good way to blend safety with fun.

“Kids seem to pay more attention to safety procedures when there’s an authority figure around.”

The Bull a Rama event took place on June 19 followed by a full day of events on Saturday and Sunday that included the Bike Rodeo and Kids Tractor Pull,

The Paradise Valley Chuck/Chariot Races are part of the Alberta Professional Chuckwagon Chariot Association’s (APCCA) official standings. Results will be in next week’s issue.

Alberta Families Must Act Fast: Time Is Running Out On Resp Grant

Province of Alberta will only honour requests for the $500 grant until July 31.

Unless families act fast, Alberta children under six years of age could miss out on the Province’s $500 Alber ta Centennial Education Savings (ACES) grant. Now set for cancellation on July 31 this grant provides pre-schoolers with a $500 kick-start to their Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP).

Established in 20 05, ACES was created to encourage families to plan for higher education with the belief that the investment would pay off, not just for children, but for Alberta’s economy. Researchers find that savings earmarked for education do in fact improve the educational progress of all children and lower-income children most of all, by motivating families to save and kids to dream bigger and to work harder in school.

Bibiana Diaz Duran, a mother of two young children from Calgary says, “When people ask what to get our kids for a birthday I often say that I have a special account for their education. I am very proud that we were able to start early and that will help the kids over many years when they’re older.”

With savings, children are more likely to graduate from high school and 50% more likely to pursue a post-secondary education. Now, just as neighbouring Saskatchewan and B.C. are catching up

with their own RESP grants, Alberta is taking a step backward. “$500 is significant for a lot of families,” Diaz Duran says. “The grants allowed us to save more and get a good start for our kid’s education.”

Momentum, a Calgary-based community organization, and its national partner Smart SAVER have launched the www.

GetMyACES.ca campaign to ensure that as many lower-income children as possible get their grant before it’s too late.

“Without tax or financial advice, lowerincome families who could benefit the most are often the last to find out about opportunities like ACES and RESPs. Without RESPs, close to 200,000 lowerincome Alberta children are also missing out on as much as $2,000 each in the Canada Learning Bond, an additional Federal RESP contribution,” says Courtney Hare, Financial Literacy Manager at Momentum.

At www.GetMyACES.ca families can complete the ACES application in just minutes, 24/7 and choose BMO, RBC Royal Bank, Scotia bank or TD Canada Trust to start their RESP account. There’s no cost and no contribution required and their Canada Learning Bond application will be processed at the same time to make sure kids get all of the funds they’re eligible for.

Don’t delay! Families must submit an application by July 31 to get the $500

Mannville Hosts Ducks Unlimited Fundraiser Banquet

The Vermilion/ Mannville Ducks Unlimited Committee held their 22nd Annual Ducks Unlimited Canada Banquet and Auction at the Mannville Recreation Centre on June 13. “ We have great suppor t here in Mannville. It’s a great committee. The volunteers arranged the food and sold the tickets. The only way this is such a success every year is due to our great volunteers,” said Events Manager James Ingoldsby.

Donated art works, framed paintings and photography, an autographed hockey jersey, sculpture and an action rifle were displayed for auction at the hall. Many supporters turned out for an informative and entertaining evening in support of conserving Canada’s Wetlands. Cocktails and a silent auction were followed by dinner and a live auction. The Vermilion Gun Club volunteered bartending.

Ducks Unlimited Canada is a not-forprofit, registered charity with their mission being to conserve, restore and manage the wetlands that are critical to waterfowl,

wildlife and the environment.

The Wetlands provide many environmental benefits that contribute to human health and the economic well being. They prevent flooding, filter and purify water, replenish and store groundwater, reduce erosion and protect shorelines, provide biodiversity, for all or part of their life cycle, will also play a crucial role in the future of climate change, hold twice the carbon found in the tropical forests of the world, while they occupy six per cent of the world’s land surface.

Alberta’s wetlands are as diverse as Alberta’s landscape. From the Rocky Mountains to the boreal forest to the open prairie, Alberta has one of the most diverse landscapes in all of Canada.

“We have 600 communities across Canada and we are always looking for new volunteers. People who have an interest in the outdoors, conservation, nature and who are passionate about wildlife,” said Ingoldsby.

According to the Ducks Unlimited Canada website the Wetlands are part of this landscape. Lesser swans and woodland caribou depend on the wetlands
