The project has received donations of $50,000 from the Government of Alberta Community Initiatives Program, $5,000 from the Rotary Club and $5,000 from the Lion’s Club, $10,000 from Eastalta Co-op and a commitment of $20,000 from the Town of Vermilion. The list of contractors and suppliers who have provided material and services at a reduced rate and in some cases no charge include; Ferbey Sand and Gravel, Dave’s Field Service, Vermilion Ready Mix, Lourich Construction, JKD Excavating, Rona, AB Homes, Murray Martin, Jeff Strowger, Phoenix Engineering and Dundonald Homes.

Cadets Annual Ceremonial Review The Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR) at the Craig Armories in Vermilion took place on June 13. The cadets displayed what they have learned over the past training year to their families and assembled guests. Deserving cadets were honoured and awards were presented for Best Overall, Training Officer Recognition, and Commanding Officer award for diversity and commanding officer challenge for leadership. You Can’t Keep A Good Ghost Sign Down

Ghost signs from Vermilion’s past are communicating with the present. “We didn’t even know it was there,” said Merlin Lysons referring to the Tinsmithing and Plumbing sign above his shop front door. Lysons is the owner of the family-run business Martin Plumbing and Heating. “They (the letters) just started appearing quite a few years ago...bleeding through the paint.” These signs are now commonly referred to as “ghost signs” since they usually appear out of nowhere, as in the Lysons’ case, or are revealed during renovations. They were also usually painted on the

front or sides of buildings in an oil-based paint that contained lead. This would account for the resiliency of the paint said Lysons. They also advertise a business or product (usually local) of a bygone era and provide glimpses into an area’s past. “The sign was already painted over when my dad (Clarence Lysons) bought the building in the early 1960’s,” said Lysons. This was usually the fate of ghost signs when businesses switched hands and the signs were no longer relevant. However, in this case, the sign has made an appearance at just the right time since the Lysons family are still in the Tinsmithing (or its modern day equivalent, sheet

metal) and Plumbing business. “It’s just a coincidence,” said Lysons with a grin. Although Lysons is unsure of who painted the sign or when it was painted, local businessman, John Stewart guesstimated it was “probably painted around 70 years ago.” “It may even have been painted by Keith (Inman),” said Stewart. Inman is the man responsible for painting the Craig’s sign on the side of the Stewart’s department store. That sign was first painted on the side of the building 75 years ago said Stewart. “Keith painted it twice over the years and he did an outstanding job.” The Craig’s sign is a rarity in the world

of ghost signs not only because it has always been visible, but also because it has been preserved over the years by the original owners of the building, and repainted by the original artist. The Stewarts seem to be ahead of their time in recognizing what a treasure the old hand-painted sign is. Around the world people are now booking ghost sign walking tours. They are tweeting, blogging and hunting these old signs before they disappear completely due to modern renovations or total demolitions. As for the Lysons’ ghost sign, they are planning to leave it as is for now. “If we do decide to do something with it, we will keep the same writing,” said Danny Lysons, Merlin Lysons’ son.

The Vermilion RCMP is seeking the public’s help in solving a hit and run that occurred

on April 4, 2015 shortly after 10:00 am. The suspect vehicle appears to be a Ford Ext Cab pickup truck pulling a tandem axle stock trailer. The truck may be missing it’s front grill. Video surveillance shows the trailer strike a light brown SUV in the parking lot directly to the East of the Bargain Shop in Vermilion. If anyone has information as to the owner of the pickup truck they are

asked to call the Vermilion RCMP Detachment. If you have recently had to repair a bearing cover on your stock trailer and feel you may have accidentally hit something please attend the Vermilion RCMP Detachment to report this. Anyone with information on this event is asked to contact Vermilion RCMP Detachment or Crimestoppers.

On the evening of June 6, 2015 at approx 10:45 pm, Vermilion RCMP members were on patrol in the 4900 block of 47 avenue when they observed a vehicle fuelling up at a nearby bulk fuel outlet. The female driver was known to members to be the subject of an ongoing investigation. After leaving the bulk fuel

establishment, the female made attempts to evade police but was unsuccessful. A traffic stop was initiated in the parking area behind a local lounge. The female was arrested for theft over $5000.00 and was subsequently searched. During a search of the female›s person, 25 grams of both soft and hard cocaine was located

H ave y o u eve r noticed that Father’s Day does not quite have the same amount of hype as Mother’s Day? Working in the newspaper industry and throughout my life I have noticed that Father’s don’t quite get the same amount of recognition as our Mother’s do. When Mother’s Day is coming you can hear the buzzing of children and adults about what they are going to do with and for their Mother’s on that special day, but during the past week or so I have not heard the same chatter for the Dad’s of our communities. The book of Proverbs says “Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.” So what is the meaning of this proverb? I did some research and I found it to mean that children are a gift, a privilege and a blessing and to have parents especially fathers who love and care for you, is something so special and precious, it signifies the importance of the father’s role. When you look at the relationship

between a father and his children in a normal family setting it is clear to see that a father is his son’s first hero, and his daughter’s first love. Dads are usually the main financial provider for the family. They work hard at their job and still find the time to fix things around the house when they’re broken. When you are young, whether you are a son or a daughter he tosses a ball around with you and build forts. He takes you on family outings such as fishing or sports events. He cheers you on when you are participating in sports, whether it’s at a cold ice rink watching you play hockey or figure skating, or a soggy baseball field due to rain. You can be guaranteed, he gives a serious eye to any guy who shows up sniffing around his daughter to take her on a date. He can take measure in a blink of an eye if this interested young fellow has good intentions or shady intentions, because he was once a young man too. As we grow into our teenage years, he often loses the hero status and first love status for a while, as we strive to become our own independent individuals and disagree with his many strict rules he puts in place to help keep us safe.

Upon becoming an adult, and a little more wise, the hero and first love status returns. For a son his Dad will always be his hero and for a daughter he will always be the man of her dreams. This coming weekend is Father’s Day and Dads will be honoured with the classic BBQ, cards and probably even some gifts they really don’t like, but will smile and say thank you anyways. Most Dads will not want to be fussed about because

they do not feel as though it is necessary or they are just a little to manly too admit they like the fussing. So ignore your Dad’s persistent no. “No it’s ok, I don’t need anything for Father’s Day,” and do something special in your own way. You know your dad best and only you know what he will love. Dad’s need fussing about too. Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads of our community.

Light Horse 4H EXPO Results The Vermilion Light Horse 4H Club competed in the 4H EXPO Inter-club Horse Show at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds on May 30 and May 31, 2015 along with 10 other horse 4H clubs. Day one at 4H Expo is a horse show, Day two is a gymkhana event. The Vermilion club did very well on Saturday with several placings in the show. On Sunday Vermilion did very well again with many placings and several high point winners! High Point Winners from gymkhana day were as follows: (Vermilion Members). Junior Age group: 1st Hesston Zack, 2nd Trista Wilson. Intermediate Age Group: 3rd place Hayden Zack. Senior Age Group: 1st Harleigh Zack, 2nd Breanne Hryhirchuk. 4H Expo is a wonderful way to wrap up the 4H year and a great opportunity for 4H members to meet each other. Spring is so great this year, other than the drought, but it sure makes it nice to get out on adventures. This past weekend was so nice, when I woke with the calm and clear sunrise, I had to get out and do something. So I grabbed the gold pans, walking stick, binoculars and Miss Pickles, my pup, and headed out. Not fully sure where we were headed, we went toward the cabin planning on stopping just to check up on it. On the way I thought I would put on the packs and go looking for Native artifacts on private land. Native artifacts intrigue me with a passion. I love looking at and holding this history in my hands. I have stopped many times at the Viking RibStones and stared in wonderment, http://townofviking.ca/visitors/ things-to-do-points-of-interest/182-localhistory-and-culture/536-viking-ribstones and even left offerings there during hunting season. I have seen teepee rings, many hammer stones and precision handmade arrowheads, and horse hobbles/buffalo skull hammers and many other super interesting objects here in Alberta’s Midwest. Alberta is rich in Native artifacts and they can be found almost everywhere; ever y homesteader in the day had awesome artifacts from the RibStones, arrow heads to hammer heads and war clubs just from working their land and fields. As we age we know of many people that have many such items from their parents and grandparents now gone and also a part of Alberta’s history. Many of these collections are still kept and prized.

Now looking for artifacts can be a grey area when it comes to law. Of course, it is against the law in any archaeological site in Alberta and much crown land, and is even illegal on a lot of privately owned land in Alberta. One has to be a big city lawyer to interpret all the laws governing found artifacts with even arrowheads; Alberta is the only province that disqualifies items “On or above” the ground from being considered “archaeological resources”. Although they can be protected under a separate ministerial order’s, meaning by many departments of the government, even on private land…plus many of these collections were obtained long before said laws. So is it legal to keep an arrowhead laying on the surface of the ground along a trail on private land? Some say “yes” as long as one wasn’t digging for it, others still maintain it’s a grey area and even arrowheads should be left where they lay. Some will state a variation of our late Alberta Premier Ralph Klein’s 3S rule... Shove it in your pocket…Shuffle off…and Shut up!!! Most town and cities in Alberta are built over historical sites. Regardless, there is no law against admiring history. In the area I was in, you could clearly see where arrowheads were made in great quantities, maybe for even thousands of years with worked rock chips of every type of stone that precision Native arrowheads were made of. This sandy area is affected by flooding rains, blowing wind and changes every year which makes it so interesting. One can sit there and almost visit the past; hundreds or even thousands of years ago. With my imagination, I can read the story; a single big basketball sized rock, obviously out of place in all the rock-less sand, was hauled there by a grandfather’s young grandson.

Bigger obvious hand palm sized rock chips indicate the grandson was also probably instructed to take other prized rock material, which was likely brought in from all over the country just for potential arrowheads. And struck on the bigger rock to provide chips of razor sharp potential arrowheads, several perfect round hand sized rocks also stood out near the bigger rock. Visible markings showed they were also used to fine-tune the smaller rock chips. Even smaller oval thumb sized rocks can be found for even more precision work. But I imagine the skilled arrowhead maker had his personal bag of the finest precision tools such as those smaller rocks and antler tips. I would imagine those fine tools were carried with the craftsmen wherever he ventured, the tiny sharp chips show signs of many arrowhead being built. Some larger chips show they have been worked and discarded for various reasons. Fascinated with what lay and look so natural, but so obvious if you can see it, and also letting one’s adventurous mind do the detective work…after picture different stone chip samples. The day passed quickly and Miss Pickles and I had to move on to the next adventure. Which didn’t take long, we had to drive out over several pastures, one had tiresized willows which made the trail hard to see, as we neared a gate I heard a noise under the truck which sounded like loose barbwire. Since at the gate I crawled under and had a look, worse than barbwire, it was a discarded 50 ft piece high tensile electric fence, now this stuff is so tough that my three wire cutters hardly put a dent in the wire. Worse…it would take bolt cutters to even make an attempt at this stuff that entangled many times around the right

rear tire just in the couple feet of travel. Worse…it was bent and entangled… an hour later I finally unraveled all the wire from tire and underside of truck… real worse…the wire severed all brakes lines…worse all the brake fluid drained out… Worse…even my emergency brakes were bent and seized…Now I don’t recommend anyone try this at home…but we were in the middle of nowhere and far from home, but desperate measures for desperate times! So off I go with zero brakes, now I know my truck and in the last 50 years have been in some hairy situations, so red neck improvise takes over. I drop truck into 4x4 still drives normal but when I shift auto shifter into “Low 2” engine brakes slows instantly, then drop into “LOW” and truck engine brakes into a dead stop quickly. I, of course, took all back roads and avoided any traffic. I was a little nervous on the river valley hills but actually took my time and idled down with no issues. Again, not advised for most drivers. By evening Miss Pickles and I made it home tired but safe. I switched over to the riding lawn mower, while Miss Pickles slept, then switched over to the quad for her evening run once it cooled down. Adventures galore for one day outdoors. When The Smoke Clears The Parting Shot Sometimes the most dangerous thing about grey area adventures…is writing about them!!

Debbie Maddex Non-academic staff member (two-year appointment) Ms. Maddex began her career with Lakeland College in 1981 and has served as a senior administrative assistant in many academic and service departments at the college. Seems like all too often, lately, I’ve been saying my goodbyes to a lot of old neighbours, friends and yes, family. I can remember those people from my school days and in my growing up years; doesn’t seem like that long ago. A lot of folks who have lived long enough had parents that were here at the first settling of this country. Many stories of their trials and tribulations were passed on to their children, and now those children are in turn passing on. I can remember sitting in the shadows listening to my grandparents telling about their experience when they first arrived in this country. They really saw the isolation and the lack of medical help if you got hurt or sick. Their stories were so real and their memories of the times were evident in the passion they portrayed in the telling. In real early times prairie fires had wiped out most of the bush and there were virtually no fences. If the wind blew out the trail in winter, you could get disoriented and lost. Think of that on a cold, blowy winter day riding in an open sleigh. Remember in those days the dentists

had no pain killer, freezing or such, and dental work was an ordeal even if you got to the dentist. A bad injury like a broken leg was almost tantamount to a death sentence!! There was no so called ‘safety net’, as we say now, you were totally on your own, except for the charity of your neighbours. The telegraph system came in with the railroad that opened up the county for settlement, but other than that communication was difficult to say the least. Prairie trails hadn’t been replaced by roads and they snaked across country in the easiest most direct way. Those early people could certainly tell you the problems there were then. I’ve seen them and the four lanes of pavement too. In not too long a time those of us who have seen both, will be gone. In the earliest times a phone call wasn’t even a possibility for some time. It took years for the phone system to be established even between towns. Once the depression times happened it fell apart to a great extent too!! Very few farm families had a phone after the 1929 stock crash. Dad had vivid memories of the hardships. Not too many folks left now who experienced those times, tho I remember the stories, my children may never realize the reality of it like people my age could!! In the early thirties the roads were such

that my brother was born on the kitchen table, with help from Grandma Wolters and a nearby neighbour. The road was impossible after a heavy rain!! I was born in Vermilion hospital in January and the story is I came home from the hospital in an open sleigh. There are many stories of people stricken with medical emergencies that weren’t able to access help in time. I don’t think too many teenagers now will ever see the isolation that people of my age endured or ever know the hard work that almost any endeavour required to be accomplished. I can remember ditches being dug here in Vermilion by hand. There were no backhoes then or any kind of loader like now to load gravel or whatever. Even a grain auger didn’t occur ‘till almost into the forties. Grain was shoveled by hand. The folks who know how to stook or pitch sheaves are mostly gone now, those who know how probably can’t anyhow. Most of us old folks can remember the first time we saw a flush toilet or running water and it was probably on a trip to town. We thought a movie was a miracle and stood in line to see one. I never saw a T.V. until I was a mid-teen on a trip to U.S.A. We never had one up here for over ten years later!! So many things we take for granted

now, weren’t even on the horizon in my childhood and it’s hard to make our children and grandchildren even believe the stories we tell. It’s hard for the young folks to understand that computers didn’t figure in our lives in any way and all the whole vocabulary of the system is like Chinese of Greek to many of us. The children now can’t even imagine a world without such embellishments like smart phones. We didn’t have even power or electric lights until the fifties. I’m so hoping I can keep memories of some of those odd old fashioned ways we lived with. Many young people have never had to use an outdoor biffy or empty a bed pan in their daily life, or pack in wood and water. We never thought too much about it cause everyone else lived the same way. One time I was telling my kids about those old times and how hard it could be. One of my little daughters looked at me and asked, “Dad what does dinosaur meat really taste like?” Guess that tells the story good enough, “Hey.”

Early morning is always the best for a drive. I’ve never taken H i g hway 8 81, b u t I know from experience that all roads lead somewhere so I’m confident it will lead me where I want to go. Traffic is light. Is it my imagination, or are the oncoming drivers moving slowly, as though none is in a hurry to get to his destination?I check my speedometer----I have it set to show the giant numbers so I can avoid speeding, which is easy to do on our well-constructed Alberta highways. I’m listening to my iPod content on speaker. Some of it’s alarmingly awful and I feel grateful I’m travelling alone. Sometimes I record myself singing/playing guitar, or reading pieces I’ve written aloud, checking for rhythmic coherency. Checking for blunders. There’s definitely some content ready for elimination. Over a rise, I reduce speed and catch my breath. It’s a vista I didn’t expect. Undulating prairie landscape in shades of green and yellow, and a bridge crossing over the mighty North Saskatchewan River. The river glistens, reflecting the infinite blue sky in its waters. I wish I were a passenger and not a driver on the verge of distraction. The trees in St. Peter’s Cemetery shade and protect the graves of those whose remains rest there on this quiet stretch of road just before the sign announcing the boundary of Two Hills County appears on the right. Streets are mostly free of inhabitants in the town of Myrnam. It feels relaxed and

quiet here. There are properties for sale, one with the price indicated on a hand printed sign propped up in the window. It’s gone before I take note of the number... was it $25,000.00 or $125,000.00? I remember reading a story about a man who purchased a whole town once. It’s not relevant, but that’s the fleeting thought I have as I drive past. I wonder what that boarded up building on the left used to be, and what happened that it’s no longer in use. It’s only reflex that I glance left and right before crossing the path of the former railway line. The tracks are long gone. I wonder if people miss the train like I do. I wonder if they hike the trail where the trains used to pass. I consider my options at the stop sign where 881 intersects Highway 45. I’ve never travelled it either. I cross and carry on. I think it’s a baseless affinity for the number: 881. A sign announcing ‘Manville 34 kms’ amuses my easily amused morning disposition. Note to the person who’s missing a red Lady Hathaway fleece, size small: I found it lying on the side of the highway. I stopped to retrieve it, shook it free of debris and left it hanging on a white post for you. See the approach at Township Road 540. You’re welcome. On the right, I catch a glimpse of an old burgundy horse trailer tipped sideways toward the ditch. It says ‘Geneva Lake Regional’ and I wonder where that is...so many unexplored places in my own backyard. A grain truck rests on a high spot of the field to the left, a giant watchman surveying the surrounding landscape. Warning signs alert me to watch out for moose but the only wildlife I see is a daring gopher

streaking across the asphalt to the safety of the opposite shoulder. At first I think it’s a boarded up granary, but as I draw nearer I see it’s an old farmhouse, long ago abandoned to a fate of slow dilapidation. So close to the highway, I think, then remind myself that the road probably came long after inhabitants had moved on from here. Another vista showcases the beauty of this land again. You’d hardly know we’ve seen only a trickle of rain by its bounty. A small bridge traverses the serene Vermilion River near the Mannville/Rivercourse Golf Course. That discarded takeout coffee cup rolling around near the centre line appears glaringly out of place. Who does this stuff, especially here where

everything hums pristine? In Mannville, the school kids are outside. It must be recess. I open my window to hear their voices rise and fall in play. Something purely beautiful about these sounds. Children’s laughter embodies the joy of living in the moment. Someone’s painted a hydrant black and decorated it with half moons and stars. I hope the paint is luminescent, so the shapes shine at night. Too soon I have to join the continuum of east/west traffic on Highway 16. Travel is swift and efficient on roomy robot road. It’s rejuvenating to choose an alternate route sometimes, to allow yourself to travel a little closer to the scenes passing by.

Summer is just aroun d t he c or ner, and that makes it the perfect time to enjoy a refreshing glass of iced tea. Once you make your own home made iced tea you may never go back to powdered mixes with ingredients such as silicon dioxide, maltodextrin, potassium citrate and tricalcium phosphate. This iced tea is made with both green tea and black tea, for double the health benefits. It can be sweetened with either sugar or natural unpasteurized honey. The advantage of using unpasteurized honey is that it contains active enzymes. We have all heard that green tea is

healthy. It contains significant antioxidants, can improve and protect brain function, it reduces anxiety, leaves a sense of well being, and boosts metabolism and fat burning. The catechins in green tea can help weaken viruses, prevent bad breath, prevent tooth plaque and reduce tooth decay. Green tea also reduces the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Green tea is shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. White tea is more potent in reducing the risk of various cancers. Did you know that black tea also has its own list of health benefits? A 15 year study with men at the Netherlands National Institute of Public Health and the Environment found that the flavo-

noids in black tea reduced LDL (bad cholesterol), and the men that drank 4 cups of black tea a day had a significantly reduced risk of stroke than the men that drank less than 4 cups of black tea daily. A second study by Dr. Joseph Vita, at Boston’s School of Medicine found that, the consumption of black tea aided in reversing the activity in blood vessels that contributes to increasing the risk of stroke. They noted that there was improvement in blood vessels within two hours of drinking one cup of black tea. Another study of 3000 people in Saudi Arabia found that regular consumption of black tea reverses the risk of heart disease by 50 per cent. Black tea also contains compounds which are found to reduce the harmful

stress hormone cortisol. Drinking 1 cup of black tea reduces cortisol by approximately 48 per cent within 50 minutes, which means that this iced tea recipe can really have you feeling chill in no time. Fresh Brewed Iced Tea 2 black tea bags 2 green tea bags 4 1/2 cups boiling water 1/3 cup sugar or 1/4 cup honey 2 cups cold water 6 large ice cubes Place the tea bags in a tea pot and add the boiling water and allow the tea 5 minutes of steeping. Remove the tea bags and stir in the sweetener. Allow to cool. Pour the steeped tea into your serving pitcher. Add the cold water and then the ice cubes.

Webb’s Machinery Holds First Rodeo Ride ‘n’ Drive

General Manager of the Lamont Webb’s Machinery, Miles Mackow came up with the idea for a Rodeo Ride ‘n’ Drive to incorporate a large line of New Holland equipment in one location said Vermilion Webb’s Machinery Sales Manager, Kevin Martin. The Vegreville location is a “meet in the middle” spot of the three Webb’s Machinery locations in Vermilion, Vegreville and Lamont. “We want people to come out and walk around and try out some equipment. We’ll have sprayers, combines, compact tractors, skidsteers and more.” Martin said it’s a way to get farmers together to talk about their experiences

with their machinery. “We’ll have representatives from New Holland there, specialists and territory personnel to answer the more technical questions.” The line of New Holland skidsteers will also be part of a competition that will take place that day. “We haven’t even been told what it is yet. We’ll see what kind of course it is. It will probably be a course to run around with a bucket full of dirt...something like that.” He added that he would like to see this become an annual event that moves around from year to year to each of the three locations; Vegreville the first year, Vermilion and Lamont. Martin is hopeful there will be a couple

Kitscoty Bigway Food Store Destroyed In Fire At approximately 3.15 p.m. on Sunday, June 7 a fire engulfed the Kitscoty Bigway Foods grocery store and the apartment above it. “The cause of the fire is still undetermined at this time,” said Kitscoty Fire Chief Kevin Miciak. “It is being investigated. There were 40 firefighters on location from the Fire Departments of Kitscoty, Vermilion, Paradise Valley and Marwayne.” Firefighters battled the flames trying to control the fire preventing it from spreading to other buildings. “Fire Departments remained on the scene until 2 a.m. until the fire was out. This year’s 62nd Annual Wainwright Stampede is shaping up for four action packed days running from June 18 - 21. “We are expecting between 16,000 and 20,0 0 0 people this year,” said Stampede Association President Art Melin. “Last year’s weather for the Stampede was certainly wet beyond your dreams. Grand Opening For Toma Fine Floors And Shelly’s Window Coverings

“Our first year in our new location has been great and we want to celebrate,” said Nick Toma the owner of Toma Fine Floors. Shelly’s Window Coverings and Toma Fine Floors joined together one year ago as two different businesses under one roof on the main street in Vermilion. Toma Fine Floors provides a wide range of materials for flooring needs, stock laminate, vinyl, carpet, ceramic and hardwood with the latest addition of Merit Cabinets for kitchens and bathrooms. Shelly’s Window Coverings provide a large selection of textiles and materials for blinds and drapery while offering supplies, interior design consultations and professional installation crews. “It’s going to be our grand opening and one year anniversary. Vermilion has been a very inviting town. I have had a wonderful experience in the last year being in Vermilion, I’ve met a lot of new friends and new customers,” said Toma.

Toma has 43 years experience in the flooring industry from installation to manufacturing. Toma has been running his own business for the last 12 years and recently moved to Vermilion from Vegreville. “I’m starting a new chapter in my life. I had been working with the Town of Vermilion for two and a half years before finding the right location that would accommodate the flooring store. When the space came available here I jumped at the chance. Then shortly after I opened, we were renovating the store when Shelly dropped by and left her card. After we talked I gave her a key and said welcome aboard. It’s been an awesome arrangement,” said Toma. “The last year has been great, I really love working at the store. Lakeland Girls Participate In Opening Ceremonies For The Fifa Women’s World Cup 2015 Submitted

The Lakeland District Soccer Association is pleased to announce that 22 girls from our under 10 youth programs were selected by the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 organizing committee to take part in the opening ceremonies at Commonwealth Stadium this past Saturday, June 6th 2015. The Lakeland District Soccer Association was selected from soccer clubs and districts from all over the province for this prestigious opportunity. Our girls, aged 8 to 10 years old, were selected from communities across our district to participate in the youth program as player escorts for the two opening day matches at Commonwealth Stadium. Players came from Cold Lake, Bonnyville, St. Paul, Lac La Biche, Vermilion, Wainwright, and Vegreville Alberta. The player

escorts participated in youth program activities prior to the matches, met with players from the Women’s National Teams of Canada, China, New Zealand, and the Netherlands and then escorted them out onto the field for opening day matches in front of the record setting crowd of over 53,000 fans in the stadium and an estimated one billion more watching around the world on TV. (BBC.com June 6 2015) Steve Cupit, President of the Lakeland District Soccer Association said, I am proud of our girls and the way that they represented their communities, the district and the province of Alberta. True soccer ambassadors, their love of the game, eagerness to represent our small district and the pride they showed in being part of something so big cannot be understated. Farmer’s Day Celebrated At The UFA Farmer’s Day was celebrated at the UFA on June 12 in Vermilion with specials in store and coffee and donuts for customers. “We are happy to show our appreciation to our farmers for their contribution all year round,” said UFA Manager Jack Rehill. “We are also happy to support the Lakeland Stockman’s Club today and the young farmers coming up. ”Farmers at the UFA store on Friday commented that it was great to see the rain on Thursday night and that more of it is welcome. The RockSolid Triathlon is now in its third year. The sport involves three different phases and disciplines. The first part of the event takes place in the pool and the clock starts when the athletes begin their swim. Then they transition to the bike course and then to the run. The Lakeland College Recreation Centre was the hub of activity as it served as the transition point for the swim to bike and bike to run portions of the event. Spectators lined the street in front of Lakeland College and cheered on the competitors. Actor Christopher Walken even made an appearance on the sidelines, as one of the spectators put a picture of him on a sign that said: “Ain’t No Time For Walken.” This triathlon is approved by the Alberta Triathlon Association and is part of the ATA Kids of Steel points series where points accumulate based on participation for younger children, and results for youths. McCullough said it is also an event that is fun and healthy. “Camrose has a group now and so does Vermilion; so we get the gang out. We’re very excited.”

Spectacular Weekend For J.R. Robson Senior Track And Field Team The J.R. Robson Senior high track and field team had a spectacular weekend at track and field Provincials held at the University of Lethbridge University on June 5th and 6th. The team had twelve members who made it to the Provincial level in Lethbridge: Cassidy Stepanick, Jake Wynnychuk, Julia McKimmon, Cameron Webb, Levi Myshak, Ryley Miller, Tyson Pashulka, Aaron Denis, Donovan Yaceyko, Thomas Brodbin, Sebastean Dupuis, and Chad Andreychuk. These students were incredible athletes who, in many cases, broke their own personal best goals. Julia McKimmon took home a bronze medal for her performance in intermediate girls javelin with a throw of 34.55 meters. Overall, the J.R. Robson team finished fourth place in the province (for 2A schools). Previous to their experience at Provincials, the J.R. Robson team competed at the ASAA North East Zone competitions in Fort McMurray. J.R. Robson had 25 team members who made it through district competitions in Lloydminster to compete in Fort McMurray, where they earned the 2A Zone banner for the second year in a row. Coaches Kelly Scully, Dave Harasiuk, Lindsey Bates, and Kristy Kaye are extremely proud of this team’s accomplishments. Well done, J.R. Robson! Excitement In Dewberry

The second leg of the CPCA-SIGA Pro Tour Races took off without a hitch in Dewberry on Friday, June 12 and ran to Sunday, June 14. The action was fast and furious on Friday night as a track record was set by Kris Molle with a time of 1:05.90. Saturday was the busiest day of the races and was awash in excitement and intermittent periods of rain. A pancake breakfast was followed by the parade. The rain did not delay the parade, Trick Riding Competition or the Chuckwagon Races and day two closed with a Cabaret that was held at the Dewberry Arena. Day three (Sunday) of the Tour wrapped up with a kids gymkhana before the finals of the chuckwagon competition took place. The First Place Winners of the Trick Riders Compe-

tition that took place on Saturday are: Pee Wee - Piper Yule, Junior - Payton Bensmiller, Intermediate and Senior Winner Mackenzie Jensen and Open - Jennifer Sych. Driving Art Muralist Barry Overn had some fun on Wednesday, June 10 after finishing the first of four murals he will be painting in town. It’s a composite of two historical photographs depicting the Vermilion Creamery. Artist Overn said the owner of the building wanted the mural on the building to commemorate the old Creamery. (The site of the actual Vermilion Creamery was located across from the Co-op). Overn will begin work on the second mural that will be painted on the side of the Stewart Building on June 22. “I got the picture from the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. Remember Marty Jackson who received a gold medal at the track and field zones in Fort McMurray for high jump and then advanced to the Provincials in Lethbridge? She reported it was a good experience and she will be better prepared if she is lucky enough to get the chance to go to Provincials again. Marty placed 7th in her category of high jump … that’s 7th in the province! Great job and thanks for representing our school. The Grade 1’s are busy wrapping things up. The students are learning about the needs of plants and animals in Science. The students love learning about animals! They are classifying animals, talking about animal coverings, and how animals adapt in their environment. After learning about animals the Grade 1’s will be heading to Storyland Valley Zoo in Edmonton to see some of the animals they have been studying.

The Grade 2 class is very excited to be heading to Edmonton for their yearend field trip. They are touring the zoo in the morning and exploring the Telus World of Science in the afternoon. The students will also be watching Under the Sea 3D, an IMAX movie. What a great way to finish off the year and their science unit on Small Crawling and Flying Animals! The Grade 3 class is having so much fun learning about Animal Life Cycles. The students are busy watching and recording the changes in their caterpillars as they go through metamorphosis. They also have tadpoles in their classroom and -from caring for them- have learned about their life cycle,feeding habits and habitat. The push is on to finish up all of those curriculum loose ends. Grade fours are in the home stretch. They will be going to Fort Edmonton on Wednesday, June 24 and students are looking forward to going and seeing what it was like back during the fur trade.

Grade fives would like to say thanks to Rose Gorniak, Patti Mason and Don Amero for joining them on their Wetland field trip. The grade sixes are planning a big celebration at the end of the year as they are going to the Telus World of Science for an overnight sleepover under the stars in the Planetarium. Excitement is in the air!!! Speaking of air.....their last Science unit is Air, Aerodynamics and Flight and they plan to test out some paper gliders, hand-made helicopters, kites, and learn about how

airplanes fly. Earlier in the year they were lucky enough to have Science in Motion give them a very educational presentation on air and aerodynamics and so it looks like they might already be able to fly!!! Let the challenges begin!! On Friday, June 12 we had our end of the year Baseball Day and our Parent Advisory parents barbequed up burgers and hotdogs for all staff and students. Everyone enjoys the afternoon of playing ball … the water balloons instead of balls made for a fun way to finish the day.

ing and they go on their last field trip to the Petting Zoo in Lloydminster on Friday. Grade 1 and kindergarten orientation will take place on Monday, June 22 and Tuesday, June 23. Elementary Happigrams and Middle Level Awards will be held on Wednesday, June 24. Elementary students will be treated to a fun swim on Thursday, June 25. The last day of school for both students and staff will be on Friday, June 26.

They shared their experiences with the junior high students and even took them out to visit the horses. We really appreciated that glimpse into their very interesting lives! And so our week finally came to an end, in more ways than one, it was very successful. Now, we turn our focus to a more relaxed atmosphere as the classes

Sleep was only an afterthought this past week for the students of Dewberry School. Many exciting events and happenings kept them involved, active, very positive and definitely proud to be Panthers! One very memorable moment belonged to Grade 12 student, Paige Greig! While involved in her last track and field event of her high school career, she secured a position at the Provincials in Lethbridge. What did she have to show the province of Alberta? Why the mighty force behind her javelin throw! She powered through an amazing 40 metres and snatched the gold medal. What a fantastic performance, Paige, all those countless hours of practicing and preparing sure paid off! We not only have fun at school, we also take the time to have a bit of fun after hours, too. On Monday, June 8 a group of students played some mean ball against the parents and staff! With Kurt McLean’s grand coaching skills behind the bench, the parents and staff managed to rise to the occasion with a 41-27 victory! While the participants enjoyed an entertaining evening, we are pretty sure the parents and staff slept like babies that evening! Over 200 students spread across the school yard on June 10th for the annual Elementary Track & Field Day. With the sun shining and a beautiful breeze blowing, students from Clandonald, Marwayne and Dewberry came together and participated in running, jumping and ball throwing events. It was a great day and everyone worked together for a successful end to a fantastic athletic function. We would like to thank all the students, from every school, for engaging in delightful attitudes and great sportsmanship, it made for a Winner wonderful experience with you! Paige Greig. Appreciation Luncheon Members of the Vermilion Chamber gathered for an Appreciation Luncheon at the Aria Restaurant in the Days Inn June 11. Former Chamber Office Manager Anna Giesbrecht stepped down from her position after 6 years. “It’s an incredible job, it’s very diverse. You really get to know the business community. Vermilion has an active and vibrant Chamber that cares about the business community in Vermilion.” Giesbrecht said that she now looks forward to relaxing, taking it easy and gardening. “I know that everything will be in good hands now with our new Office Manager Michelle Feist,” added Giesbrecht. In June, Walking Club will continue on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fr i d ays. So c c er intramurals will run Tuesdays and Thursdays. Budding Buddies will be outside gardening and landscaping on Mondays and Wednesdays. What a wonderful year we have had with intramurals. We are thrilled that so many of our students were able to participate in some/all of these opportunities. Thank you to the amazing community support and donations for our Budding Buddies project at VES. Thank you, Jill and Kevin (Dutchak Greenhouse) for soil and plants, Dennis (Rona) fo r l a n d s c a p e m at t i n g , L aw r e n c e (Fer by ’s Gr avel) for ro c ks, Eb o ny (Mainstreet Hardware) for shrubs, plastic and soil, Bonnie (Lawn and Gardens) for gloves and landscaping matting and the Dollar Store for spray bottles and shovels for our gardeners to get out and enjoy the outdoors. The grade 5 students arrived at the school early on the morning of June 8 to leave at 8:15 a.m. for their fieldtrip to the TELUS World of Science in Edmonton. They were treated to the IMAX film‘Forces of Nature’, which was about tornadoes, earthquakes, and volcanoes. This was followed by a bagged lunch from home and a quick trip to the gift shop. The three classes then separated. 5A and 5C enjoyed the Electric Car Garage session. Each student got to make a simple electric car, and take it home. 5B enjoyed Cauldron›s Brew, and got to take home a bouncy ball they made. It was amazing to see how many parents were able to attend this field trip. The AR Celebration Day will be on June

25. We will have an assembly at 11:00 a.m., where we will announce the top readers and Mr. Beecroft will finally lose his beard. From noon to 1 p.m. we would like to invite all families to join us with their bag lunches for a picnic. There will be a special performer beginning at 1:45 p.m. VES is now accepting registrations for all students who will be 5 years old by February 2016.
