Courage Canada Trail Ride

Following the Courage Canada Trail Ride, a total of $13,000 was raised in both the live and silent auctions at the Innisfree Community Hall on Saturday, May 30. Three hand crafted knives, donated by Jim Myhovich raised $3,000 alone. Make A Wish Foundation will receive a $3,000 donation from the proceeds of the auctions. “We had a great Trail Ride this year.

There has been a lot of new interest this year, the word has really spread and more people are aware of Courage Canada. We are delighted that more and more people are coming out for the first time,” said brain injury survivor Curtis Anderson. Tim Hortons Holds Annual Camp Day Fundraiser

Some of the Vermilion Tim Hortons’ team members volunteered their free time for window squeegees Wednesday, June 3 to raise money for Tim Hortons’ Camp Day. “Camp Day is the one day each year where all sales from coffee, along with money raised through other activities at Tim Hortons Restaurants is donated to the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation,” said Vermilion Tim Hortons owner Greg Whitney.

“Today was a great success because of o ur team m e m b er ’s har d wor k , special guests and our valued customers. Without them the day could not have been the success it was,” said Whitney.

“Camp Day gives us the opportunity to help send children aged 9-18 to one of the seven foundation camp locations” “I have been to two of the Foundation camps and the counselors there are phenomenal. They work very hard to support each child and help them build

their self-confidence and to learn new skills.”

The camp experience also gives children the opportunity to interact and make new friends,” said Whitney.

During Camp Day the restaurant had Vermilion Mayor Bruce MacDuff, MLA Richard Starke and members of the Prairie EMS in attendance to help serve customers.

MLA Richard Starke who was in attendance during the afternoon shift said, “It was nice to come help support such a wonderful cause. It was a lot of fun and what the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation has done over the years throughout Canada and the United States is remarkable.”

OPTOMETRIST painting The Town Artist Barry Overn began working on the first of four murals known as the Vermilion Mural Project on Monday, June 1. The Vermilion Allied Arts Council said they received grant money for the project thanks to MLA Dr. Richard Starke and Alberta Culture. The first mural is painted on the east side of what used to be the site of the old Vermilion Creamery (presently Dickie’s Wicker building). The sepia painting is a composition of a historical photograph featuring a creamery truck and Overn’s artistic vision. The other buildings that are partnering with this project are: the Bargain Store (colour mural of flowers and a butterfly), the Stewart Realty building (historical photographic black and white composition of the first blacksmith shop in Vermilion) and the McMinis building (three contemporary colour portraits of a fireman, policeman and a veteran). When this project is complete, Overn will have painted six murals in the Town of Vermilion, including the mural on the side of the Apple Drugs building and the mural on the side of the Senior Centre. “The art is what happens when I’m coming up with the idea and the craft is the application of the idea,” said Overn. Showdown At Lea Park Rodeo

“You couldn’t have painted a more beautiful evening,” said a spectator watching the action at Lea Park Rodeo on Friday evening, June 5.

The atmosphere was electric as the crowds followed the events as some of the top names in Bull Riding, Bronco -Busting, Tie Down Roping, B are b ac k r i d in g, S te er Wre st lin g, L a d i e s B a r r e l R a c i n g , a n d Te a m Roping competed at the fifth biggest Pro Rodeo in Canada.

Morgan Grant took second place on Friday night in a time of 0.8 seconds.

Grant was the Tie-Down Roping champion at the Calgary Stampede last year for his first time.

“Calgar y was awesome last year winning the Tie Down Roping and splitting second in the Bulldogging. I will be aiming to continue my success in Calgary competing in the Tie Roping this year.”

Originally from Ontario, he now lives between Texas and Alberta working in rodeo full time. Grant started roping at 12 years old. He has a degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas on a rodeo scholarship.

Saddle Bronc Rider Justin Meston, from Tees, has been coming to Lea Park for the last 20 years. ”They put on a great rodeo here every year. They have great volunteer staff. I am very happy with my horse this year,” said Meston.

The tradition of rodeo lives through generations in the Meston family, “My Dad did rodeo, I do it and now my kids are into it too.”

Orin Larson, from Manitoba, took first place in Bareback Riding Friday night.

Larson who has been riding for the last 8 years said, “I hope to win the Bareback Riding this weekend. It’s the most physically demanding event in rodeo.” See next week for the final results.

On Sunday, June 14, Vermilion will welcome athletes from around the region to the third annual RockSolid Vermilion triathlon. The sport of triathlon is comprised of three phases; athletes first swim, then complete a course on bicycle, and finally run the last phase of the course to the finish line. The clock starts when the athlete enters the pool, and continues while he/she transitions from each phase to the next. Athletes may compete as individuals, completing all three phases, or form a relay team, with each person completing one stage. The Vermilion event will feature Kids of Steel categories for competitors from 4 -15 years of age, as well as Sprint distances for adults of different age categories, and Try-a-Tri distances for athletes new to the sport.

The idea of hosting a local triathlon was borne out of the interest of a few local families, whose children traveled around the province, competing in triathlons. They liked the idea of having a local event, and worked with a race organizer in BC (Human Powered Racing), soliciting local sponsorship (RockSolid, Lakeland College) to create an event in our town.

Rebecca McCullough, a teacher at Vermilion Elementary School, has two children in the sport. She began a triathlon club at the school, now also in its third year.

The club allows local school children to become familiar with the sport, and train in all three disciplines, whether or not they plan on competing. For some of the club members, this is just an opportunity to be active and have fun with their friends; however, many of the children will participate in the Vermilion triathlon; some even plan to travel to other triathlons around

the region. Enthusiasm has now spread through VES; a few other teachers have also developed an interest in triathlon, and have signed up to participate.

Last year, over 110 athletes took part – an increase from approximately 90 registered in the first year the event was held.

This triathlon is sanctioned by the Alberta Triathlon Association, and is part of the ATA Kids of Steel points series, in which kids can accumulate points based on participation (for younger children), and results (for the older youth).

The Lakeland College Recreation Centre will be the focal point of the action – competition gets underway bright and early the morning of Sunday June 14, with adult swim heats beginning at 7:30. Spectators are more than welcome; there is ample opportunity to view the swim from outside the pool in the viewing area, and to cheer on the athletes on the bike course (beginning at the Rec Centre and continuing out along the old highway and back) and the run (through the Emergency Training Centre).

Also interesting and exciting to watch is the transition area, where athletes switch from swim to bike, and then from bike to run, as quickly as possible. The transition area will be in the Rec Centre parking lot.

Anyone wishing to participate in the triathlon, or interested in learning more, can find registration links and other details on the event website: www. vermiliontriathlon.ca. Organizers are still actively seeking volunteers – running an event of this scale requires many people.

“It’s important to always keep the UAV in your visual sight. It’s not a God machine; it can’t fly in rain or in high wind,” said Lauscher.

“A ny w h e r e a n e l evat e d v i e w i s needed the camera can be used. You program the flight and set the altitude and it’s very accurate. It can be used for property layouts, to measure and view pasture quality, to gather information from stock piles or to examine flooding damage. “ It c an be used to examine roof damage instead of sending people up ladders which is dangerous. It has great potential for helping to save people’s lives and keep from putting people in harm’s way. We can fly these over top and get high resolution imaging instead.”

The device was originally made for accident and emergency services and has been used by the RCMP in accident reconstruction, crime scene visualization, in search and rescue and tactical operations.

“There is huge potential for these tools to advance precision agriculture by providing the scouting of crops,” said Lauscher.

“Colour-infrared photography can provide information about crop growth, health and damage from pests or disease and determine the plant species.

“Transport Canada regulates every kind of aircraft, and you may have to get clearance for certain air space classes, data approval exemptions or special flights operations certificates. Safety measures must always be taken,” added Lauscher.

The new technology will allow students

to learn about emerging techniques and technologies that will enhance research and learning in agriculture, energy, environmental sciences and fire and emergency services. Lakeland College’s applied research aim is to evaluate the practical use of UAV within local farming practices.

The UAV will open new ways for Lakeland College students and faculty to interact with industry. The camera on the UAV device is a Sony QX 100 camera.

“The drone device is worth a total of US $18,000,” said Lauscher.

Environmental students will be able to explore wildlife habitats. Thermal imaging will also allow for research in areas related to fire fighting and other emergency services as well as energy usage and conservation.

I do believe we can officially say that summer has come! The weather has been wonderfully hot with hardly any rain so far, except for a scattered downpour accompanied by a thunderstorm that quickly dissipated.

I am not a gal who particularly enjoys rain, but at this point it would be great to see.

The idea to build a community oven in Vermilion for pizza and bread making was first sparked in Craig Brown when he visited just such a place in the Dufferin Street area of Toronto, Ontario.

“I saw kids playing in the park and having pizza,” said Brown.

The overall vision of what has been named The Vermilion Heritage Park is one of “A multi-generational gathering spot for year-round use,” he added.

“As enthusiasm for the idea grew, so did the project.”

Now, in addition to the original brick wood-burning oven, a park is being built around the concept.

Looking around our little town it looks more like the beginning of fall, rather than the end of spring.

Summer is a time when people all around us enjoy going on camping trips, sitting spending time with family and friends around an open fire, cooking marshmallows and hotdogs.

While watching the weather network the other night they predicted this summer would be a hot one with very little precipitation in the prairies. I know that could be a blessing for many people’s ears, but when we look at the bigger picture it can be disastrous in so many ways.

An agricultural drought is when there is not enough water to sustain crops.

Rainfall deficits during the critical growth periods of a crop can result in large yield losses, or even complete crop loss.

Very little precipitation or droughts can cause environmental devastation as it adversely affects growing or living conditions. It can cause loss or destruction of fish and wildlife habitats, increase disease in wild animals, because of reduced food and water supplies. It can cause stress on endangered species and even cause extinction due to the loss of wetlands and wildfires to name just a few.

According to Brown, “The total budget for this project is approximately $175,000; to date; donations include $50,000 from the Government of Alberta Community Initiatives Program, $5,000 each from the Rotary and Lions’ Clubs, $10,000 from Eastalta Co-op and a commitment of $20,000 from the Town of Vermilion. The money already raised, will go toward the cement pad, the building of the oven and either landscaping or putting a roof over the oven.

“We are planning on building the park in stages...we do not want to spend money we don’t have.”

He is hoping the remainder of the money can be raised through two more government grants.

The overall concept of the Vermilion Heritage Park includes a sitting area, a memorial garden (where perennials and shrubs can be planted in memory of a loved one), a herb garden (that can be freshly picked for pizza parties), walkways, a lawn area and

“The oven will still work on days that are as cold as -20C.” Brown sees nothing but positives for the Vermilion Heritage Park and Vermilion in general as he said he thinks it will draw people to the Heritage Museum as well as the Senior Centre.

“The Museum has a playground and groups who use the park can book events at the Senior Centre.”

The cement pouring will take place on Monday, June 8 and the goal is to have the oven baking bread in time for the Vermilion Fair’s parade.

“This will become a feature that will set our community apart,” said Brown.

“I’m happy to be the taste-tester.”

Back then not only were the elk plentiful but Bighorn sheep were a general over the counter tag, while hunting elk high on the mountain treeline, we used to “shoo” bighorn rams off the trail to chase Elk. Then there were times one come down the mountain to find Bighorn Sheep licking and slobbering all over your truck as they cleaned your vehicle of road salt, we would curse them as a nuisance.

Now a top prized animal on any hunters list, it takes over a dozen or more years to draw a tag just by priority draw…who knew ha ha, funny thing is now I can see elk right in my backyard.

Sometimes when I’m shopping I can’t help but think about how things were in my childhood at the, “Old Tolland Store.”

First off, there weren’t any shopping carts, and what you’d find on the counter there sure isn’t the same you’ll see today in those carts. In those early times our cream cheque was the vehicle that brought us our day to day needs.

Ethridge Webber who owned and ran the store also hauled our eight gallon cream can to the creamery in Vermilion and brought back the cheque from the previous can. Mom would have a list of things with the top priority items at the top. Hopefully the cheque would last long enough to cover the lowest item on the list as well.

I n o r d e r t o h ave l i g h t i n t h o s e times coal- oil, kerosene, was essential, and then you needed matches, another must have to light your fires and lights. You couldn’t survive without them!! Next you needed yeast, baking powder and baking soda to make bread biscuits, pancakes and all other baking goods.

Making A List

Vermilion, in “Wieb’s Flour Mill” from our own wheat, and one by product was that, “Cream of Wheat,” porridge. Even the thought of that stuff now is so revolting.

It was staple breakfast for years. So next was coffee!! I can’t remember the time that the coffee “Perk”, wasn’t sitting on the stove, somewhere.

In the morning it would be on the front of the stove and as the day wore on it would be back by the reservoir to just stay warm, just barely perking so often, and always at the ready!!

Most of the spices and flavours that were used were traded for from the Watkins, Rawliegh, or Cressy travelers who came around several times a year. They’d take horse-hair and fur in trade too, which helped in the cash short economy back then.

Another essential was macaroni; we had that a lot, cooked with canned tomatoes and cheese for variety. Keep in mind that the cream cheques were usually between eight and ten dollars, so as the list went along you judged how much you needed by how much of the cheque was left and you added up the articles as you went along, you didn’t often take any change home.

At the wall of the store beyond the counter there were about a half dozen clear glass jars filled with all kinds of candy, from jelly beans, peppermints, gumdrops and several flavours of hard candy. I remember so long-

ingly looking at those jars and knowing it would certainly do no good to ask. If there was any money left it would be suggested we pick one!! I guess I should mention that Dad, being a smoker would have a pocket size package of roll your own tobacco and a book of cigarette papers. Yes, the essentials were all on the list!!

So many products of soaps and cleaners were not on the counter there, that crowd our carts now.

Mom had to do with laundry soap, “P and G,” bar soap she shaved off some flakes from. All those paper products were missing too, you did with rag cloths made from worn out clothing. Nothing was wasted!!

There were no cans, bottles, or any kind of soda pop available in those times, especially winter as it would freeze of course. Also high on the list would be dry beans, white navy bean, to be precise.

They could make a cold winter trip and didn’t spoil in summer. There were very few canned goods as Mom canned a variety of foods at home. Salt and sugar were on the list too!! We butchered our own meat that is beef, pork, and fowl, turkey, chicken, geese and ducks!! Most of the bacon, sausage, ham and lard were home-grown. We of course had potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and a huge crock of sauerkraut that mom canned. Peas and corn were dried and kept in bags at home,

back in those days you could grow turnips also, not like now. Do you know pearl barley or pot barely? It was a staple in soups and a German dish made of scraps of pork and barley which was made in a huge crock too. Seemed like it was on the table almost daily come winter. I’d love to see and taste it now for sure! And corn meal!! Man, we had it often, as Dad was raised on it where he came from, made a perfect combo with baked beans with pork ham. It was wonderful the way Mom fashioned it with molasses. We had it almost every Saturday evening. We travelled up to the store across “Section 15”and it was often with a team of horses with a sleigh or buggy, maybe a saddle horse and if the gas ration would allow we’d enlist the “Model A Ford.” That old store kept the country going and it never did see the hi line power arrive, so there was no freezer or cooler, so no, there was no ice cream, revels or such anywhere, no pop, potato chips or cheese snacks or anything like that! Most of the fruit was raisins, prunes, dried apples, apricots or such like. Imagine can you a store like that now!! I’m sure you’d be impressed with the lack of variety and the simple way of things. Once you got there though you felt like you’d really hit a Mecca of civilization like it really was back then. I’m glad I got to see it and have those wonderful memories!!

Vermilion Dancers Selected For Broadway

Vermilion dancers Breanna Maughan, Erica Snelgrove and Boyd Thunberg were overjoyed and delighted to have been selected and awarded scholarships to Broadway in downtown New York City.

It was dedication and hard work that led to the selection of the dancers as three of 17 dancers from all over the world for this

Broadway scholarship.

It will be a workshop of intense training on the Broadway stage. It is considered to be one of the highest levels of commercial theatre in the world.

Years of travelling and training seem to have paid off. Fifteen-year old Breanna Maughan was 4-years old when she started dancing.

ion from age 4 to 12 until our dance teacher Kristen George moved to Marwayne.”

Members of the Marwayne Dance Association, Maughan and Snelgrove continued to travel to Marwayne two and three times a week in pursuit of dance lessons.

“It’s really cool and I’m very excited.

I had seen stuff about Broadway and I thought, aww that would be really cool to get the opportunity to do that, but I never thought it would be me.

At the end of the competitions in Bonnyville, one of the adjudicators came up and started talking to me afterwards; he said how he remembered me from Saskatchewan. Then the next day I got the phone call to say I had been chosen,” said Maughan.

Both girls will share rooms in New York while there. Both of the girl’s mothers will

be going along too.

“It’s a big city, I have never been to New York before and I’m excited too,” said Wanda Maughan.

Snelgrove got the call after her teacher applied online.

“I just always loved competing in dance festivals.

“We can choose the genre of dance that we want and the classes we want to be in,” said Snelgrove.

The dancers are looking forward to working with world class choreographers.

The award includes a $1,000 scholarship with flights included and a professional photo shoot. The dancers still need to fundraise another $4,600 each.

The Broadway workshop will start July 15.

I heard part of a testimony from a survivor of Canada’s former Residential School program on CBC radio this week.

His voice was that of a grown man of sixty or seventy but his words were spoken with the emotion of a vulnerable child.

Speaking of the isolation, fear, and loneliness he experienced during the government-imposed separation from family and community, he said: “I used to look at the sky and know my parents were looking at the same stars, but I felt so lonely, so alone in the world.” It’s difficult to listen to the stories of survivors, but hear them we must if we are to begin to know the truth about a dark era of our shared history and comprehend the depth of its impact on all of us.

On June 2nd, The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, having collected some 6000 stories from survivors across the country over a period of six years, released its 400 page report on the impact of more than 100 years of Residential Schools in Canada and offered 94 recommendations from what it had learned.

Here is a delicious cake recipe that I redeveloped that will fit the bill.

Instead of using many different flours and ingredients to create an equivalent to regular flour I simply used premixed gluten free pancake mix. I recently made this for two of my friends that have food allergies, and what a treat it was to have a wheat and gluten free chiffon cake that also tasted amazing.

When you make this recipe there are five egg yolks left over, so I turned them into a chocolate custard sauce by adding 2 cups of milk, 2 tablespoons of corn starch, 1/3 cup sugar and 2 to 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder.

Cook stirring over medium low heat until thickened. In addition to the chocolate custard sauce, I also serve it with whipped cream. If you or the people you are making the cake for are also allergic to dairy, then use a full bodied canned coconut milk to make the chocolate custard. For the whipped cream component, if someone has a dairy allergy you can whip the cream from a can of high

represents one of the Seven Sacred Teachings that form the foundation of traditional aboriginal culture. Truth, Humility, Honesty, Wisdom, Respect, Courage, and Love.

Seven generations of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit children experienced the trauma of attending Residential Schools, a program funded by the Canadian Government and run by staff provided by various Christian churches, 60 percent of them affiliated with the Catholic Church. The purpose of the program was primarily to separate children from their families and communities, to educate and assimilate them into what was deemed by authorities to be a superior culture. In schools far from home, children learned that their ancestors were uncivilized heathens, their languages and cultures irrelevant, and their histories therefore forgettable.

Testimonies from former students reveal the profoundly negative impact of this “education” on generations of aboriginals. While the Residential School program with its theme of ethnocentric superiority ultimately failed in its goal to ‘kill the Indian in the child’, it succeeded in robbing thousands of innocent children of their family relationships, stripping away their dignity, leaving those who survived the experience to drift like ghosts between cultures, belonging to none.

Documented evidence reveals that approximately 150,000 aboriginal children were removed from their families---some by force----and enrolled in residential schools between the ages of 4 and 16. Some never saw their families again.

Others returned after years of separation, alienated and broken. Their stories are difficult to hear, their courage in speaking out astounding. People of fifty, sixty, seventy years of age speak of their childhood loneliness, fear, of disturbing psychological, sexual, and spiritual abuse. They speak of despair, hunger, and punishment.

They speak of being identified by numbers instead of names. They speak of the denigration of their ancestors, of their parents, and communities.

Between four and six thousand children died while attending residential schools. Their remains lie cradled now in the depths of the earth, many in unmarked graves. Often, their families received no notification of their deaths. The disregard and disrespect shown to the children and their families is unconscionable.

The report identifies what the Residential School program attempted to achieve as cultural genocide. Cultural genocide is achieved through the elimination of those values, traditions, and objects that give meaning to a group or community.

I wonder what you remember learning

about native people in your elementary social studies class. I don’t remember any mention of thousands of kids being educated in institutions far from their parents. I wonder what else was conveniently excluded from the pages documenting the truths of building our nation.

The Commission’s report may be one of the most significant documents concerning Canadian history. Its content challenges us to learn of some disturbing truths. As difficult as it is to read, the report is not about blame, but about first acknowledging what happened to thousands of vulnerable children and then to work together to rebuild our relationship based upon principles of mutual respect for our differences and for our common humanity. Reconciliation, Justice Murray Sinclair says, is about forging and maintaining respectful relationships. There are no shortcuts. Perhaps a first step toward what will no doubt be a lengthy journey toward redefining the relationship between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people is understanding that we are equally deserving of respect and dignity, with neither being culturally, racially, or spiritually superior to the other.

If we can learn to conduct ourselves within that framework, Canada can step into the future as a nation renewed by the strength, trust, and mutual respect exemplified by all its citizens.

Gluten Free Chiffon Cake

fat coconut milk. Simply chill the can well before whipping and remove the watery coconut water at the bottom of the can prior to whipping. Sweeten the whipped coconut milk to taste.

What I really like about this cake is that it is very moist and has a lot of healthy protein, so you can enjoy it almost guilt free. It is a perfect cake for celebrations such as birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, barbeques and Canada Day summer picnics.

For success in making a chif fon cake there must be absolute no egg yolk in the egg white mixture, because even the smallest amount will prevent the eggs from whipping properly. Also the beaters used to beat the egg yolk mixture must be thoroughly washed and rinsed to remove any trace of egg yolk before they are used for whipping the egg white. This is my own special recipe, for perhaps one of my very best cakes. It is tall, slightly spongy, moist and worth the extra effort. I hope you enjoy it. You can also use the same recipe to make a regular chiffon cake by using all purpose flour instead of the gluten free pancake mix.

Gluten Free Chiffon Cake 10 egg whites at room temp for 30 minutes 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 5 egg yolks

 

1/2 cup safflower oil 1 cup water 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 cups gluten free pancake mix 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon sea salt Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. This is a three bowl cake. Carefully separate the whites from 10 eggs that have sat out at room temperature for 30 minutes.

In the first bowl, a large one, place the 5 egg yolks and with an electric mixer, beat the oil into the eggs a teaspoon at a time. Add the vanilla and slowly add the water to the egg yolk mixture while beating.

In a separate bowl sift together the gluten free pancake mix, 1 cup of sugar, the salt and baking powder. Add the flour mixture into the egg yolk mixture a quarter at a time. Continue beating until well blended.

In a separate bowl beat the egg whites until foamy. Add the cream of tartar. Continue to beat until very soft peaks. Slowly add the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and continue to beat, all the while ensuring that the egg whites are at the soft peak stage (the peak flops over). Gently stir one third of the egg white mixture into the egg yolk batter, until just blended. Gently fold the remaining egg white mixture into

the egg yolk batter. Pour into a tube pan and bake for 60-70 minutes. Invert the pan while cooling and allow cooling completely before removing from the pan. Frost with a slightly thinned vanilla butter cream icing. It would look pretty to garnish the cake with fresh wild rose petals, which by the way are edible.

On May 29, 23 junior high students went to Vermilion to represent our school in various track and field events. In total, 16 athletes qualified to move on to BTJHAA Track and Field in Wainwright on June 2. Miss Almberg, Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Konieczny are thrilled with the effort and results of this year’s junior track team. Well done everyone, we are so proud of you.

Mr. Myhovich and Fat Cat were at our school to present the certificates, and all students were treated to rewards for achieving two goals this year totalling over 4444 quizzes for this year. Another prize for the Accelerated Reading for elementary was a chance for the kids to dine with the Principal, Mr. Church. The MILK PROGRAM was a roaring success this year as an average of 225 glasses of milk was served up weekly in the Elementary. Thanks to the Hot Lunch Program as well as donations from various sources, the children received their milk FREE of charge. We think that we need to put this into perspective and realize the little things that make our children healthy, and also how convenient it has been not to pack drinks in the lunches.

Let’s think of this as a bonus; to appreciate what our school has; and hope to keep this program running. The final date for milk this year will be on Thursday, June 11.

Kindergarten is winding down for another year. The kinderkids have worked so hard this year and were ready to try out Grade 1 with Mrs. DeFord for their Grade 1 orientation morning! The last day for kindergarten is Friday, June 12.

Grade 6 students are super excited about moving on to Junior High next year.

They have shown true leadership skills and tried to be good role models for the elementary students. They are presently in the process of preparing for Grade 7 by practising with new locks, organizing lockers instead of desks for their school supplies, and reviewing in all four subject areas as they have Provincial Achievement Tests coming soon. It is a great opportunity for them to show what they have learned and feel proud of their

Mrs. Karen Roland wishes to say, “Thanks for the memories!” She got her first position in Grande Prairie where she stayed for three years, teaching French and Physical Education to elementary and junior high students. The next step was the big school in Mannville, and here is where she remained for the past 30 years. She has had the privilege of teaching Grade 6 in Mannville for over 20 years and has been touched by every unique personality of every single child that has passed through her doors. The busy years teaching all grades at some point in her career, fostering friendships, being involved with the community, has resulted in so many memories not to be forgotten.

We invite you to join us for tea as we honor Mrs. Roland’s 30 years at our school on Wednesday, June 17 at the school from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

During the last month, our club members have been very busy.

On April 26, 2015, Vermilion 4-H Sheep member Megan Krys, participated in a Canine Achievement Day in conjunction with the Vermilion Outdoor Club members. She won Top point red ribbon for Obedience.

On May 3, our club hosted a Regional 4-H Sheep workshop at the Ag Society Sheep B arn where members were shown grooming, showmanship and general care for their projects to use for their upcoming achievement days. Fiftyfive members from five clubs travelled to participate from as far away as St. Paul,

Elk Point, Chipman and Boscombe.

H e i n e a n d K a l e m We s t e r g a a r d showed members and parents how to build a feeder for sheep. Four feeders were given away as door prizes. Winners included the Krips family, Lawrence family and Smith family from Elk Point and Dechaine family from Boscombe.

On May 18 our club had our weigh- in/ mock achievement day at the Ag society sheep barn.

Some of our members have also taken on raising pheasants from day old chicks and will be released midsummer. The members involved with this project include Kaelem Westergaard, Mia Westergaard, Megan Krys, Myranda Lawrence, Jack Lawrence and Ainsely

Lehne.

On May 29, before our regular meeting, Julia McCrae had a slide show presentation of her photography for her achievement day showcasing different poses of action shots, people and animals. Members and parents then discussed plans for the sheep projects upcoming achievement day.

Dates to remember: Club sheep shearing will be June 14 at the Sheep Barn starting at 9:00 a.m.

The Westergaard, Krys, and Dow families are heading to the Provincial sheep show July 8-10 in Olds.

Achievement day is July 21/15 starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Sheep Barn at the Ag Society Grounds.

The oil and gas industry may be down, but the Bonnyville Chamber of Commerce is up about their 2015 Oil and Gas Show.

“If you work in the oil and gas sector, and are forward thinking, and want to make contacts for your business, then this (2015 Bonnyville Oil and Gas Show) absolutely is the place to be,” said Bonnyville Chamber of Commerce President Robyn Ducharme.

“For our exhibitors, we arranged for face-to-face meeting with six of the major producers in our area,” she said.

“This face-to-face exposure will pay dividends when the market comes back, and it will come back because the oil in the ground isn’t going anywhere.”

That’s what our role as a chamber is, to create an opportunity for local businesses to meet and network with other business, said Ducharme.

“While the number of booths is down slightly from the 173 that were in the 2013 show, we still had a waiting list.”

A New Chapter Begins

Congratulations to the Class of 2015.

The weekend was full of graduation activities star ting with an in-school ceremony on Thursday with all staff and students gathering to recognize the accomplishments of these 14 amazing young men and women. On Saturday the Graduation memories began with a class picture taking at the Vermilion Museum followed by Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Father Roger’s message encouraged the graduates to continue their faith journey throughout their lives. After a delicious meal provided by Colleen’s Catering the Official Ceremonies began at the Vermilion Regional Centre. Mr. Chase was the M.C. for the evening keeping the program flowing smoothly. Crystal Jackson and Brittany Partington introduced the graduates followed by “O Canada” led by Cheradyn Bessette and the School Prayer. Tributes were made to the staff and parents and the CWL presented a gift to the graduating class. Sydney Poliakiwski and Matthew Pulyk shared “Remember When’s” of the class followed by the Grad Video. After the video the students returned back to the stage in their cap and gowns. After his inspiring words Mr. MacMillan shared the song he wrote for the graduates. The last speech of the evening was given by this year’s Valedictorian, Kathleen Dieken.

The Graduates were presented with their certificates by Mr. Chase followed by the graduates enthusiastically tossing their caps! The evening concluded with the Grand March of the Graduates.

Schroeder, Rory Wheat, Brayden Wilson, and Morgan Wilson Traveling back in time was experienced by the Grade 5’s last week as they toured Fort Edmonton. The students enjoyed the fair rides, old-fashion treats, talking to all the actors throughout the park and investigating all the homes, businesses, schools, and churches. The highlight of the trip was the guided tour of the Fort.

which taught the children the skills of hunting.

The Grade 7 students also went to Fort Edmonton to discover the Fur Trade.

The students went on a tour of the Fort and were shown various skills that were needed at the time of the Fur Trade. In groups the students built travois to race and searches through the Chief Factors House to find wonderful artifacts. The day was concluded with journeying throughout the years and watching the film The

Northern Journey. The film explained how Fort Edmonton was created and has grown into the city of Edmonton. The trip was full of fun and adventures!

Elementary Track and Field is this Friday, June 12 starting at 10:00 am. Each elementary student will receive a hot dog, beverage and ice cream on this day.

During the last week of May, the three Kindergarten classes went on a field trip to the Vermilion Hospital. Donna was a wonderful tour guide and showed them many areas of the hospital that made the students more aware of how all the departments work.

T h e G r a d e 4 c l a s s e s t r ave l l e d to Fort Edmonton on May 27. The students rode on the steam train to get to the fort, and then toured the trading post, a Cree Village and John Rowand’s house, learning some of the ways things were done in the late 1800’s at Fort Edmonton. Students experienced aboriginal games and building a travois, which they reported were the best parts of the tour. The guides and actors at the various buildings helped to bring history alive as they played their roles. Many students realized how life was very different back then. They would like to extend a great big thank you to all the parents who supervised and shared the day with them.

Grade 2 students enjoyed their field trip to the Vermilion Public Library on May 28, where they were delighted to get an up close experience with various live and mounted critters. They also participated in hands-on magnet stations where they discovered many attracting things.

On June 1, the Grade 1 classes travelled to Paradise Valley for a field trip to the Climb Through Time Museum. This field

trip fit in wonderfully with their Social Studies curriculum about how changes over time have affected and influenced their families and communities today. Some of their favorite things were the school room display where they saw the old desks and chalkboards and also the old store room where they saw toys from long ago. At the very top of the elevator, the auger that directed the flow of grain is still present, and a window allowed the students to look all the way down the elevator to the bottom. They thought this was very neat. Overall, it was a fantastic field trip and many thanks to the large number of parent volunteers that made it a success.

The VES Hot Lunch Society will be putting on a dance to help raise money for their program. The dance will be held in the

VES gym on June 12 from 5:30-8:30 with DJ Shannon Leonard providing the music.

There will be hot dogs, salads and beverages served. $5.00 will get you music, food, and lots of fun besides. Please come out and support this tremendous cause.

As the school year wraps up, it is a time where changes happen. This coming year, we will be saying farewell to some of the VES staff and would like to wish them all the best in their future endeavours. After more than 30 years of teaching (11 at VES), Mr. Faull has decided to retire, but promises to come back to substitute at VES. Mrs. Walsh has also decided to retire after being an Educational Assistant at VES for 22 years. Mrs. McCullough has accepted a position as assistant principal in Mannville School. Mrs. Kaastrup has chosen to move

to a Grade 1 position in Kitscoty, which will be much closer to her home. Miss Gadke has accepted a Grade 1 position in Two Hills. Miss Shawna Craig was our VIBE coach this year and enjoyed being in school so much that she has decided to return to university to become a teacher.

columbia Silkmoth Sighted A rare Columbia Silkmoth was photographed by Karen Foulds. Foulds noticed the colorful moth at work in the yard at B & R Eckels.

The Columbia Silkmoth is a large moth from late May through June. It is also called the Columbia Moth. Its larva is known as the Larch Silkworm - a reference to its host plant (the tamarack, also called the larch).

The Columbia Silkmoth is a moth with mainly reddish brown wings and body easily confused with the Cecropia Moth. The wings of the Columbia Silkmoth have crescent-shaped markings in the middle of both the fore wing and the hind wing, although occasionally the spots on the fore wing may be small or absent. There is a large black spot near the apex of the fore wing. Each wing also has a stripe with two color layers: black and white. This contrasts with the stripe on the Cecropia Moth, which also has a reddish orange layer. The tips of the wings of the Columbia are rounded.

With a wing span of eight to ten centimeters, this moth is smaller than the Cecropia. This moth appears to be relatively rare, as sightings of the Columbia do not appear to be common.

Colton Wynnychuk held a bake sale on June 3 and June 4 during the lacrosse games that took place in the Vermilion Stadium.

High traffic and a good supply of home baked goods, popcorn, hand knit toques as well as a donated jersey that was up for raffle from the Edmonton Rush lacrosse team, helped contribute to the fundraiser.

Wynnychuk who will be going to live in Finland through a Rotary Youth Exchange program is helping to raise funds for a project called ShelterBox. ShelterBox is a project that provides shelter, warmth and

basic essentials to families who have lost their homes due to a disaster, such as the Nepal earthquake. Wynnychuk who is a Midget lacrosse player said having a bake sale during the Roar’s games was a good way to tie the two together. “People who are on my team helped me out so much.” One ShelterBox costs $1,200. If Wynnychuk raises enough money, his name will be attached to the donation and he will be able to track where it ends up. “It’s a good feeling. Kirby Whitlock said he is excited to “finally” be having the Grand Opening of his new store, Christina Home Furnishings.

The store is named in memory of Whitlock’s mom, Christina, who passed away in February 2014.

“I wanted to keep a piece of mom living on, so I named the store after her.”

The Sears outlet along with Christina Home Furnishings has been open at its new location at 5022 50 Ave. since last May. “I had a big mattress sale and it went really well. The old location was 2,000 square feet. I needed more space…especially when we started expanding on the furniture side.”

Whitlock said he felt a little nervous about the expansion, but his Ashley Furniture representative said, “Do it. You’ll be okay.”

Whitlock said his mother lived long enough to know that he had purchased the building and that she was happy with that.

The official Grand Opening will take place on Wednesday, June 17 at the store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In store specials will include 50 per cent off mattresses and 10 per cent off furnishings in the Christina Home Furnishings showroom.

The Grand Opening will also include a cake to celebrate, as well as a barbecue with hamburgers, hotdogs, pop and chips for $5 or a donation. All the proceeds from the barbecue will go toward the VES hot lunch program.

A Lodge By Any Other Name

Even though Red Feather Ridge Lodge is only 14 kilometers from Vermilion, in some respects, it seems like it’s a world away.

Cheryl Livingstone, who has been in catering for “35 plus years,” decided seven years ago she needed her own kitchen. Her husband Doug Livingstone said, “If we’re going to build a kitchen, let’s put a building around it.”

Just short of a year later, Red Feather Ridge Lodge opened its doors for business. The facility is fully licensed and acts as a venue for various events and celebrations including, weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, meetings, Christmas

parties, and retreats to name a few and it can accommodate up to 160 people in the upstairs dining area. The downstairs is the main lodge where meetings or smaller group retreats have taken place.

The Livingstone’s pride themselves on their service and their signature meal, “Roast beef that is second to none,” said Doug Livingstone.

“We provide a food experience. We can’t slough off; our competition is very good; we try to be better.”

The large property is very versatile. In 2013 the Alberta Traditional Bowhunters Association had their major fundraiser at the Lodge and transformed the grounds with their traditional canvas tents.

ing their operations to include three unserviced cabins. “They will be perfect for retreats,” said Cheryl Livingstone.

The three cabins and a wash facility are targeted to be ready by mid-August.

Also in the plans is rock landscaping.

The property also plays host to a variety of wildlife. “It is natural land; land that has never been broken. We have native grass and meadowlarks. Their habitat is disappearing,” Doug Livingstone said.

Along with meadowlarks, sightings of birds such as the golden eagle, the speckled hawk and the namesake of the Lodge, the red-tailed hawk are commonplace.

“So are beavers,” said Cheryl. “We almost called it Beaver Bend…but our son suggested Red Feather Ridge instead.”

Livingstone’s son is a trained Chef and also works in the kitchen, along with several other family members who “give a hand when needed,” she added.

Doug Livingstone said they built Red Feather Ridge so people could enjoy what they see everyday.

“At night the sky is phenomenal – the stars are amazing and it is quiet...it’s nice to live and build a dream and see the results. And it’s nice to have happy customers.”

local news The Vermilion Voice | June 8, 2015 Roar Bantams Dominate Three teams took to their home turf at the Vermilion Stadium on Wednesday, June 3. The Bantams were unstoppable as they defeated the Bonnyville Heat by 14-2. The team is undefeated this season. Assistant Coach Aaron Starko said they are a “good group of kids who are really working well together...and are all good athletes.” The Novice team was neck and neck with the Bonnyville Heat in their division, but the Heat just managed to edge out the home team with a final score of 5-6. On April 26, 2015, Canine Project Members from Vermilion River 4 -H Outdoor Club and Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club held their Canine Achievement Day at the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Barn.

The members demonstrated their obedience work and showmanship skills they have worked on with their dogs this year as well as showed their judging skills in a mystery judging class. They also participated in an agility course for some fun and entertainment.

judge for the judging class was Kaylie Krys. Thank you for being a part of our day! When the canine classes were complete our members, parents and guests enjoyed a potluck lunch and visiting. Following the lunch, points ribbons and year end gifts were handed out to the members.

Jasleen Kaur Gumber “Be an artist, in whatever little faculty possible. For the Earth, without ‘Art’ is just ‘Eh!” Art and artists come in many shapes and sizes, and can be found almost anywhere one looks. Dewberry School houses these diamonds in the rough and polishes them up to sparkle in their own time. The last several days have seen many a jewel glittering from the pencil box to the sandpits.

While art is a way to express oneself, there are more times than not that it is used to depict a message. Remembrance Day is one of these times. Students diligently and masterfully craft their symbols and display their interpretation of remembrance in colour and black and white posters. This year the members of the

Legion were proud to present the following students with plaques and cash prizes for their wonderful works of art: Junior Colour - Robert Kaale (3rd), Emily Fluney (2nd), Jacy Soloy (1st); Junior Black & White - Ethan Warawa (3rd), Hannah Surina (2nd), Laramie Parr (1st).

The Village of Dewberry experienced the great artistic talents of our elementary students. The students were to create a postcard that exhibited Dewberry in all its grandeur. The following students received McDonalds gift certificates: Presley Parr, Rhett Romanchuk, Aaliyah Newell, Aspen Warawa, Robert Kaale, Gavin McCurry, Laramie Parr, Sarah Heathen and Marley Brown. The postcards will be printed and sold at the upcoming Dewberry Chuckwagon, for a cost of $2.

years ago and over the years we have seen many children improve their reading and develop an appreciation for books. Every week the students get chances to record their daily reading minutes as well as their latest accomplishments on completing comprehension tests for many of these books. The students have the opportunity to win monthly prizes for their reading efforts and a final prize in June. This year’s winner of a Kobo Arc E-Reader was Cruise Bensmiller. Congratulations, Cruise! Keep on reading everyone!!

One group of artists displayed their talents in Wainwright at the BTPS Junior High Track and Field finals on June 2.

Surviving the chilly and windy conditions, they honed their special techniques and delivered fantastic performances. These students participated in the following events: Paige Fanjoy - Discus, Jelena

Dewberry School has proven time and again that their series of small things amount to great rewards. Our little section of this Earth is abundant with talent and artists that add to the ambiance of our environment. “Eh” need not enter our vocabulary.
