Recycling Twine Gaining In Popularity

Since 2013, the Counties of Vermilion program for baler twine and net wrap. and Minburn have established a recycling Owen Nelsen, a Sustainable Ag. Specialist with both Counties said “It has become more popular to recycle twine now.”

Nelsen and three other County of Minburn employees were baling twine in a vertical baler at the old landfill site just south of Mannville on May 28.

After the success of recycling grain and silage bags, farmers became interested in how they could recycle their twine and net wrap.

It is not recommended that farmers burn their twine and net wrap, said Nelsen.

“Burning plastic is toxic. It is releasing toxins into the air and into the soil.”

It takes 15 to 20 bags to make one cube. It takes 40,000 pounds to make a shipment.

“Brindon Cordage will make it into twine again,” said Nelsen. He has also spoken to a company who will be buying the net wrap from the County once they have compressed enough, though he is unsure of what they will be doing with the recycled net wrap.

“Our grain bags are ready to ship,” Nelsen added.

“We are considering opening a transfer station in Kitscoty as well. People want to recycle. The farmers we talk to say they’re happy to have somewhere to take it.”

Successful Saddle Up In Support Of Courage Canada Trail Ride

The 11th Courage Canada Trail Ride supporting Brain Injury Awareness took place on Saturday, May 30. Riders arrived early bringing their own horses and wagons from far and wide. Seventy-five riders and 12 wagons with 74 people, 149 people in total participated in the Courage Canada Trail Ride.

Brain Injury Survivor Curtis Anderson greeted everyone at the gate as they entered the field.

Anderson started the Courage Canada Trail Ride in 2004 in support of Brain Injury Awareness and he has taken part in the ride himself every year since.

On June 26, 20 02, Anderson, a 27-year-old bull rider with 10 years experience, lost his balance and was struck in the head twice by the bull he was mounted on during the Ponoka Stampede.

To date the ride has raised over $100,000 to help brain injury survivors and their families.

Entertainment followed at the supper at the Innisfree Community Hall with cowboy poetry, fiddling, silent auction and music featuring Genuine Cowgirls Rai and Randy Smith.

Donations and proceeds from the Trail Ride support the following organizations; Halvar Jonson Centre for Brain Injury, Lloydminster and Area Brain Injury Society, FOCUS Vermillion, VALID Association Vegreville and Canadian Pro Rodeo Sports Medicine.

The Trail Ride will be held the last Saturday in May every year and they’re always looking for more riders, more wagons and more sponsors.

The Vermilion Roar Tyke Festival took place in Vermilion on May 23/24. Festival Coordinator, Kelly Stetson, said the kids had a great time both on and off the floor! Tyke teams from Wainwright, Flagstaff, Bonnyville, Cold Lake & Lloydminster attended for the 2-day festival which focused more on fun than the scores of their games.

Spark A Conversation, Loneliness Thrives Among Seniors

When our parents hold us for the first time their hopes and dreams are to see us grow into independent, successful, caring adults. I know those were my thoughts upon having each of my children. Our parents sacrifice many things to look after us for the years we need them. They teach us, guide us and provide for us.

This week is Seniors’ Week, and for that occasion I think it is important to show the seniors of our community how much we appreciate them, for without seniors we wouldn’t be here. The seniors of our community are our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Our grandparents brought our parents into this world, and our parents brought each one of us into this world, so I think it is

only fitting that each and every one of us should in some way show our older generation just how valuable they are to us and to show them they are appreciated.

The seniors of our community were once vibrant young individuals, just like us, who could work and socialize without any restrictions. They contributed and built the community we now call home, without their hard work and dedication maybe our town would not be here today, who knows?

The senior community, even in their aging years, still contributes so much to our town. Many of them still work in town and on farms, they volunteer within our community and just by existing they contribute a daily smile as you walk down the street. I have never passed a senior when a smile wasn’t returned with a smile or a how are you today? I think just by having seniors in our community makes it

a happier, better place to live.

However, did you know that a huge portion of seniors living in any community feel socially isolated? According to a 2013 Canadian survey, just over a third of Canadians aged 65 to 74 are living with some form of disability, adults 80 years and older report having two or more chronic conditions which can cause them to become socially isolated.

Social isolation can have serious psychological and cognitive effects on a senior. The numbers are staggering when you read that 1 in 4 seniors live with a mental health issue, whether it is depression, anxiety or mere loneliness. Another report I read and studied one time while working with the elderly said “ 15 per cent of adults 65 years or older who live within our community suffered from depression and approximately 50 per cent of people over the age of 80 report feeling lonely,

with men over the age of 80 having the highest suicide rate of all age groups.

That is some pretty big numbers.

So how can we as a society help make our elderly less lonely? Well, I think it is pretty simple. We can get off our butts and visit our loved ones or a member of our community that we know may be feeling lonely and shut out. Go visit some of the seniors at the nursing homes or lodges. If you see a senior of our community sitting by themselves in a restaurant spark up a conversation with them, that one conversation maybe just what they need. Offer a helping hand; you will be surprised how good it makes you feel.

We all have busy lives, but try and take even a few minutes to make a change in someone else’s life.

Take this week and every week to show the seniors of our community how much we really appreciate them!!

The Vermilion and Area Garden Club was treated to a presentation by soil enthusiast Josie Van Lent, Dean of Agricultural Sciences and Human Services at Lakeland College.

When you hear Van Lent speak about soil you can’t help but notice she is passionate about the subject.

“Soils are fascinating to me, they are foundational to life,” said Van Lent. “Soil is a total ecosystem unto itself.”

Van Lent commented on soil conditions in Africa. “I teach this, I know this, but when I went there and saw how damaged the soil was there I thought WOW! It takes millions of years to make good soil. That won’t come back. Not in our lifetime,” added Van Lent.

Van Lent said in Western Canada a zero tillage program has been implemented to protect the soil.

The presentation was very down to earth and informal as Van Lent provided many opportunities for Garden Club members to ask questions.

Members were interested in achieving optimal soil conditions for planting flowers, as they assume the flower planting role at the Tourist Information Booth which will take place this year on Wednesday, June 10.

In conjunction with Communities in Bloom (CIB), the colours will be pink and yellow and purple and yellow.

Van Lent was also asked for her opinion in other gardening matters such as the use of landscape fabric to control weeds (she says it works for the first two to three years), mulch, ground cover and tent caterpillars.

She recommends using organic solutions whenever possible to deal with insects and disease. “Try to get the caterpillars while they’re still in the tent.” Van Lent suggested cutting or pruning the tree to achieve this.

The last choice is the use of a pesticide, “Our environment has enough pesticides,” However, if this does become necessary she recommends an organic pesticide called Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) which is a bacteria that occurs naturally but makes pests sick when they eat it.

Van Lent also addressed some questions regarding ideas that appear on the popular site Pinterest, such as the latest fad to put Epsom salts on your soil.

“Don’t put salt on the ground. It causes saline soils.”

“Farmwives Book” Introduction And A Tearful Remembrance

It’s ironic that I’m introducing a book that features “Farmwives” by honoring a farm “husband” but, given a recent passing, I am doing just that.

I inter viewed Edith (and Alber t) Paul of the Thomasville area this past Fall for a book I am working on profiling “Farmwives”. My mission of the book is to honour and celebrate these unbelievable women, their life’s work, and their passionate dedication to not only their homes, families and communities; but, to the larger patchwork of Canada’s heritage.

When I met Edith and Alber t in September of 2014, it was like I had been reintroduced to long-lost friends. It’s hard to describe their magnetism but, after a 65-year marriage, it’s hard to mistake their love and deep admiration for one another. (Not to mention, Albert was ridiculously hilarious). He and I hit it off, and Edith represented (to-a-tee) the strong, proud, yet unassuming matriarch (which, for whom, I was writing the book in the first place).

Albert passed away April 28, 2015.

Edith had the word passed on to me by one of my family members. She said to ensure I knew he enjoyed our visits.

I kept in touch after our interview, and I was saddened to know he won’t see the book when it’s finished. Even in my brief knowing him - you could tell how proud he was of his wife and of their life together.

I’m honoured to have met this amazing couple and, my heart is heavy imag-

ining the loss Edith will bear. This is why the best way I could honor her (and Albert), is to introduce this book with her interview first.

The full book contains 17 questions and answers for each woman; it will include candid photos, and lastly (and fittingly), a recipe that they wanted to share with all. We are so lucky to be surrounded by and to have these women in our midst.

That is why, every 2 weeks, I will be releasing 3 of the questions from one of the farmwives and a photo of them.

This will be a beautiful way to commemorate them and shed light on the remarkable lives they have lived. The book will contain the other 14 questions from each, and each of their feature recipes.

So, in the words of Albert himself, because they “are darned important!”; Today, Edith Paul is my first interview release of the upcoming Farmwives book.

Singer Danielle Marie Finalist For Canadian Country Music Awards

Young country singer Danielle Marie has always had a passion for music. Born and raised in Vermilion until she was 8 years old, she calls Vermilion “Home.”

Danielle Marie has recently found herself in the top 3 Finalists for the BCCMA Spotlight performance contest where the winner will receive a $35,000 prize package.

“I am really excited and honoured to be nominated for this. You can find the link on my website homepage and everyone please vote on my website before June 9!”

Should Danielle have the most votes,

she will have a chance to play alongside Canada’s Country greats at the Canadian Country Music Awards in Halifax this fall.

Danielle also found out this month that she is up for a 2015 Edmonton Music Award in the category ‘Artist to Watch’ on June 14.

“I had a job in Vancouver but it was so hectic and crazy busy with my music that I had to keep asking for time off every day.

It was kind of an inconvenience for them.

So I said you know what, my music is my career and I’m going to focus on it right now. It’s been busy every single day and that’s how I want it to be.”

at Country Radio called ‘What You Can’t Have’ which was released April 14th. “I did 15 stations in 8 days. It was awesome getting my name out there to the stations, if people want to request me at their Favourite Country Station they can.”

Danielle Marie is currently performing shows with her band on weekends in the Fraser Valley area outside Vancouver. The 19-year old has been mixing with big names recently like award winning Producer Tom McKillip.

Danielle Marie said she works on her song writing every day. “I have recorded a few songs in the last few weeks that I eventually want to record. Songwriting is definitely one of my favourite things to do. In school I could never pay attention because I was always doodling song lyrics in my notebook.”

Danielle Marie said she gets inspiration from singers like Miranda Lambert.

“She is my on-stage inspiration, she is like a fire ball on stage. I’ve also always looked up to Taylor Swift because of how grounded and humble she is.”

Danielle Marie added she really misses Alberta since moving to Vancouver.

“Alberta is home. I miss the slower pace of life there. Now that I’m in the big city all by myself, I definitely do miss home more. When I was driving up from High River and Calgary on my tour there was this beautiful sunset that made me tear up because I miss home a lot.”

Danielle Marie said she hopes to book a CD release party in June or July for the new album due out on June 16.

A MAN’S WORLD, OR IS IT? Minburn 4-H Achievement Day

As June is the month of remembering Fathers we think of all men who have huge responsibilities.

They are the role model for the Man image (whatever that might be) to the younger generation, the teacher, provider, fixer and they need to be both strong/gentle and teacher/learner, a fixer yet know their own limits.

Often a man’s world is turned upside down and the strongest man is shaken by loss; the death of a child, parent, spouse, family member or friend, the loss of a dream, the abuse experienced or neglect in their childhood.

They may have experienced broken relationships and feel the rejection.

They may feel vulnerable and naked, so to speak.

There is the myth, of course, that big boys don’t cry and tough it out Just stuff it..

The emotional experiences a man f a c e s c a n b e ove r w h e l m i n g . T h e stereotyping of a man can set them up to feel like a failure. The strong imagewhen their world is crumbling, memory of abuses in the past- that have been stuffed away now surfacing to be dealt with. Feeling vulnerable, trying to find acceptance after rejection. Feeling a

sense of anger building and isolating when they feel no one understands or will listen.

Grief losses unaddressed can lead to d e pres sio n an d ad d i c t io ns an d substance abuse to numb the pain of the emotions.

Depression and mental health issues can become par t of a man’s life when losses and grief pain are not addressed but stuffed inside.

Remember a man’s loss and grief are as unique as the person and cannot be compared to anyone else’s. (Your personality, other losses, coping mechanisms, age, attitudes, social supports and acceptance of the myth that men are strong and without emotions) Stats indicate that there is a high rate of suicide in the age group of young men and middle aged men. Society needs to address the pressures and stigma and the lack of support for men who face loss and grieve and feel pain in a’ Man’s World.’

We honour fathers and men who face this life -, courageously, men who are able to reach out for help and to be a help. Let men know we support them in their life journey.

The Innishfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club celebrated 50 years of 4-H on Achievement Day, May 27. Judges looked in detail at the steer project in the classes of Junior, Senior and Intermediate.

The winners of the Junior Steer Conformation were, in 1st place Tyson Rudolf, 2nd Dylan Cannan and 3rd Lemonee Kostynuk.

Intermediate: 1st Triton Nott. 2nd Courtney Cannan and 3rd Morgan Nott.

The Senior Steer Conformation winners were, 1st Laramie Anderson, 2nd Olivia Anderson and 3rd Brayden Drury.

Innisfree Minburn 4-H Beef Club May Report Submitted

Our club’s last meeting was held May 6 in Minburn. On April 11 we went to Highland Feeders for a tour, we would like to acknowledge Highland Feeders for the tour of their facility and our tour guide Sherry Rowe. On May 13 in Minburn our

club had their Mock Achievement Day; everyone’s calves looked really good.

Our club is preparing for our achievement day on May 27 at the Minburn Agricultural Grounds. Our club’s next meeting will be held June 3 in Innisfree. Good luck to all of our members on Achievement Day.

The month of June is already upon us.

May went by quickly, usually a slow month for me but garden and yard work sped it up before realizing it was gone. Hopefully I can slow June a bit.

However, June is when the archery business usually picks up building up from a snail’s pace to hectic, until bowhunting season in September, so I have to sneak outdoor adventures in when I can.

That garden has kept me busy, but now that it is in I stare to the big blue sky wondering if it is ever going to rain. About five days ago I had seven drops, two days later I was flooded with 12 drops of rain.

One of my archery shooters, friend and farming neighbours stated that if I didn’t stop hogging all the rain he was going to truck over 80 pairs of cows and new calves to feed on my lawn. So that rain dance has a little more step to it!!!

Alberta is extremely dry and needs a two day soaker. There are presently 71 wildfires and several classified as out of control in Alberta.

We all have to be fire conscious and careful regardless of where we live in Alberta. Something as simple as a discarded cigarette butt out a vehicle window can threaten all types of life.

As you can probably tell, if you read many of my columns, I am fascinated with the biochemical properties of food in its natural state, and the beneficial impact it can have on the human body.

This passionate interest stems largely from my Home Economics training at the University of Alberta, where I studied food related required courses such as organic chemistry, food science, nutrition and food preparation.

Fellow classmates in organic chemistry were from pre-med, engineering and various science pursuits. I was from the Home Ec department, wondering why, chemistry was a mandatory prerequisite for me. In hindsight, an understanding of chemistry has served me well, by assisting me in understanding more and more about the nature of food. As a result, I love to develop recipes based on the science of food interactions, such as black peppers ability to increase the healing benefits of turmeric or how the body is better able to absorb nutrients from a

Well, I was. Yellow Dog was sniffing something closer the ground. It’s a great time of the season for the olfactory system. Maydays, lilacs, apple, cherry, elderberry blossoms. The window of opportunity is brief and I say walk slowly, stop and acknowledge every one. We will not see them again for another year.

Around the corner, there’s a man halflying on the ground in full sun, his walker nearby. He’s digging with purpose in the parched earth beneath the windows of the elder home. Dust rises around his arm and settles on the sleeve of his blue cotton shirt. We need rain. Dog sniffs at his slipper-clad feet, but he doesn’t seem to notice us. Around The Campfire

One of my bowhunting friends lived in Slave Lake a few years ago, his dream home and life’s work was wiped out in a snap when that wildfire swept through that community.

He lost everything, and due to some bureaucratic bull…insurance didn’t cover him, he walked away with his and his family’s lives and was grateful for that.

One of the main reasons I always remind people to be fire safe.

One never hears or sees the results of wild fire in the news or in person for the majority, but believe me it’s harsh and devastating, as spring is when most wildlife have newborn young.

On a happier note since I started to write this column yesterday we had a thunderstorm last night, and received the much needed moisture in areas, it wasn’t as much as we needed but are thankful for what we did get.

However, along with the precious rain was intense lightning, Mother Nature in a fiery rage often hitting areas hard before the rain falls, so as much a curse as a blessing for some in dry parts of Alberta.

Most of May has been surprisingly mosquito free for an early spring with lots of standing water, which was until a couple days ago when the new batch came with a vengeance.

Those little new batch youngsters are a mean bunch…they are not graceful like

the mature mosquitoes that land on you and proceed slowly with drawing blood.

Those youngsters I am sure come in like a bullet with that blood sucking beak first before they land and start drilling anywhere and everywhere…and they sting and itch right away.

Without the yearly mosquito caution reminders, I am going to focus instead on a little vengeance of our own, and you won’t believe how great it works, you have to try it.

It’s cheap, effective and whether camping, home or anywhere outdoors it will work wonders. Of course it’s not going to get them all. However, it will surprise you on just how many mosquitoes it does take out.

Set yourself up a little trapline around your yard or patio, close to any standing water on your property, you will notice the difference, you can thank me later!

Now that I got that garden of mine in… including 73 “Stratton super hills” of potatoes, I am ready for some R&R adventures.

The Battle River has gone down nicely so it will be the focus of an adventure or two. The Battle River opens for fishing on June 1 as with most any other closed flowing waters in Alberta, but as tempting as that is, I think I caught a touch of gold fever, or at least the attempt to get gold fever.

Now it’s a proven fact that no one would ever get rich panning for gold on the Battle River or any river in Alberta for

The power of food to heal and to hurt amazes me. A few days ago, a friend was telling me how raw honey and ginger is shirking her dad’s cancer tumors.

Months earlier she had shared with me in tears, that she was flying out to Montreal to see her Dad, who was suffering from cancer, and there seemed to be nothing more the doctors could do and little hope.

Unfortunately she was also dealing with a cancer diagnosis. When she later told me the good news about her dad I was delighted to hear it. I inquired about how this could be possible.

The story is as follows; her father’s friend, told him to try a mixture of equal parts unpasteurized honey and ginger.

This mixture was taken by him, one soup spoon full, three times and a day before meals. The spoon is to be made of wood.

When he went to see his doctor several weeks later the tumors had shrunk. His doctor asked him what he had been doing, and her dad explained the honey ginger mixture. His doctor told him to keep on doing what he was doing.

On his next visit the tumours had shrunk even more, until they are all gone. This interesting story led me to search out the

science behind gingers effect on cancer.

It turns out that there are large amounts of published studies to be found confirming the anti-cancer effects of the natural gingerol compound found in ginger.

Studies suggest that it may be beneficial with breast, prostate and ovarian cancer. Studies also show that ginger has no beneficial effect on colon cancer.

Ginger can thin the blood slightly, so you must consult your doctor if you are on blood thinners or take aspirin.

Of course this amazing story has me thinking about how I can develop a recipe that enhances the beneficial effects of ginger, increases health and tastes good.

Time for more science experiments in the kitchen! In case you are wondering, I did mix up equal parts of honey and ginger, and it tasted like a hot ginger candy, pretty good actually, but you may want to have a glass of water on hand. I put together these hot ginger coconut bars that are full of healthy ingredients. In addition to the healing properties of honey and ginger, prunes are extremely high in beneficial antioxidants, out classing oranges and blueberries by a landslide.

What are you planting? He doesn’t respond. I repeat the question, this time with more volume. The man adjusts his position, squinting at us from under his cap. Eh? Oh...cucumbers and tomatoes, mostly. He shows me where a few cucumber plants are already sprouting. He talks enthusiastically about the abundance of last year’s crop. So many fresh tomatoes, he says, he gifted them to anyone who would take some.

The man is one among many, I learn, who continue to practice their love of gardening in spaces a fraction of the size they might once have tended prior to relinquishing their former responsibilities to those younger and more able. Expertise and desire don’t diminish just because mobility and space do.

The man asks about Yellow Dog. She is known to many in this facility as a friendly, albeit motley canine always looking for a

free ear scratch or a scrap of toast. When I disclose her age, he leans back and laughs good-naturedly, saying he is the same in human years.

Nothing like the taste of fresh food you’ve planted, nurtured, and harvested yourself, he declares. It has a taste like no other. Well, it has a taste. Period. Isn’t that the truth? We talk awhile longer, and I promise to watch for progress in his garden over the coming weeks. I tell him I’d better stop delaying his work.

It’s getting hot. But he says it’s time for church anyway. That darn preacher has such a sense of humour, he can’t miss a service. For a fleeting second, I think to ask if he needs my help to get up to his walker. I let it pass. Somehow I know he neither needs nor wants my help.

As I walk away, I recall the giant garden that once grew in our yard each summer.

With some chagrin, I also clearly remember the resentment I often felt toward

that matter, but as a hobby it is a load of fun just for the adventure.

In fact most would get richer picking up bottles and cans along any highway in Alberta rather than panning for gold on any river in Alberta, but it is lots more fun.

Most rivers in Alberta will have “colour” which is just specs of what is called “gold dust” “flour” or fine gold, along the Red Deer River, a pan with a dozen of these colours was an exceptional pan.

However, on other rivers such as the North Saskatchewan River, in certain spots I have had 100 plus colours in one pan. Still, not a get rich quick scheme to say the least.

If one wanted to find a nugget of any kind, likely a babbling stream in Alberta’s majestic mountains would be the place to look. However, whenever panning there is always that dream of the “mother lode”… which seeds gold fever.

When The Smoke Clears Like fishing and realizing it’s not the fish you’re after, maybe life is about not the gold in your pan but the all the gold in every morning sunrise that you can

1 cup pitted prunes 1 cup total of: nuts, pumpkin sunflower seeds/banana chips/semi-sweet chocolate chips/raisins 1/3 cup unpasteurized or raw honey 1/4 cup powdered ginger 1 tablespoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons almond butter 1 tablespoon coconut oil or olive oil Line the bottom of an 8x8 pan with parchment paper. Process the prunes in a blender to chop them. They will be able to form into a ball. In a bowl, combine the chopped prunes, coconut, cinnamon, cloves, nuts and seeds etc. Really work the dates into the coconut mixture; you may have to use your hands. Combine the olive oil with the honey, and then stir in the nut butter. Add the ginger to the honey mixture and mix well. Then add the homey mixture to the coconut mixture and stir until the honey is well distributed throughout the mixture. Pour mixture into your prepared pan and press the mixture down well. Put in the freezer to cool. When cool turn the mass out of the pan and cut it apart down the middle, and then cut each side into 5 or 6 bars, or cut into squares.

The privileged serenity of planting and then watching patiently as small plants emerged from the earth to produce wholesome foods in abundance eluded me then.

I understand better now the significance of such things as tending to a garden, whether in a vast space or in a strip of dirt the width of a small flower bed. It’s simple. A well-tended garden provides the vital ingredients that sustain us, sustain life. Maybe it takes half a lifetime to comprehend what the quiet and diligent gardener innately knows: in all things, the abundance of your return wholly depends upon the quality of effort invested. Perhaps it’s the gardener who understands better than anyone the concept of reaping what you sow.

Now that I’m older and have some sore joints that certainly have a way of slowing me down, and hindering my usefulness, I can now appreciate how wonderful it was when I was young, to be able to do and be so active. I can still appreciate that even in my present limited mobility; I can still be on my own and look after myself. There are so many ways in life we can’t fully appreciate what we had until it’s changed and we see the contrast.

hungry for a bit either? You got to appreciate even little things when you go without and no way of changing things.

Remember how wonderful a cheery old woodstove and its warm presence felt when you came in after a long cold winter ride on an open sleigh. Yeah, I guess you appreciated that, didn’t you?

Think about a cold cabin and no light or heat and no meal cooking on that stove. I’d bet you’d appreciate someone who would have the lamp lit, the house warm and cozy and a meal wonderfully cooked ready to eat. Would you really tell that someone how special you felt that they were there to do that? The onus is on each of us, to tell folks who have done a kindness for us they are, appreciated. In order to really feel how special and great something is, you have to first experience the exact opposite, you think?

Anyone who ever hand cranked a stubborn old engine that refused to run, would really have appreciated a self starter, they used to call them!!

So many things in our life tend to be taken for granted and we don’t think to appreciate what the consequences would be if those taken for granted gifts were gone.

Being appreciated or better still appreciating someone is so very vital in this old world!! A compliment paid in a sincere way gives such a strong and encouraging lift to anyone’s spirit that last and lasts. I know it has that affect on me, anyway. I am a sucker for praise I guess.

We have all had times that a good neighbour or friend that had time to share a shoulder to lean on in dark times of trouble. It goes without saying that friends like that are so precious. Our old neighborhood was such that you only need ask and help would come running. It just

was so special and we all appreciated the idea that we were so lucky to live in such a community. It truly was the way it was.

Most of us have a passion for something in our lives, be it our farm, or job. Maybe it‘s hunting or fishing or maybe art work, quilting or such like . Whatever it is, or whoever, I think we really like to know we are good at what we do and maybe have someone draw attention to our abilities.

So many times a simple word or encouragement can be the only reward. Somehow it seems those words or deeds are so much more appreciated than anything else. I can really relate to times when I‘ve witnessed the happiness that happens when a heartfelt comment touched a heart in a positive way.

I spend a lot of time at Jamborees and see people in their most vulnerable times.

I’ve witnessed the hurt caused when some negative comment reaches a performer’s feelings. I’ve also been there to encourage a timid soul, that yes, you really can sing, play or whatever. “Yes”, it is wonderful to encourage someone just to do their best.

I’ve been so very fortunate to have had friends and yes even strangers make an effort to approach me and compliment me on my music or my writing. It always makes me wonder how come I’ve been so fortunate to receive such gifts and I’m so thankful for the opportunities to share them.

My dear parents, who so lovingly steered my rebellious steps along until I learned a few lessons of life, must be given so much praise for that result. They also taught me the love of nature and wildlife and the love of growing things.

That’s something I’ll appreciate always, and since flowers are part of that whole scheme, I really appreciate sharing those gifts we see growing around us. And by the way, I appreciate the people who help me and make my writing career possible at all. God Bless You All!!

6. There is no GPS for life (there will be twists and turns you can’t foresee).

He also thanked the College for the recognition as a Distinguished Citizen and the Honorary Bachelor of Applied Business Degree, which he said will be the most cherished of his degrees.

The winner of this year’s Governor General Medal was Roxy Korth of Irma, Alberta who graduated from the Animal Health Technology program. This medal is awarded to a student who graduates with the highest academic standing in a President of Lakeland College, Alice Wainwright-Stewart presents the President's Medal diploma-level program.

Ashley Kocsis of Blueberry Mountain, Alberta was awarded the President’s Medal. This medal is given to a student who has “demonstrated excellence in academics and leadership in student activities.”

The recipient of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award (Vermilion Campus) was Albert Miller (class of 1949). He was recognized for his years as a successful businessman and farmer as well as his volunteer work with the Rotary Club of Westlock.

The Lakeland College Lloydminster Campus Convocation Ceremony will take place on Friday, June 5 at 1:30 p.m.

Vermilion Athlete Cycles For Canada

Alison Jackson will wear the Canadian colours this week racing in Gatineau, Quebec on June 4 and 5.

Jackson who has had a very successful winning run to date recently announced that she will be taking her cycling to the professional circuit.

She joined the team ‘Twenty16’, which is based out of California, last January where she is the only Canadian on a team of Americans.

“If I have the Olympic dream, cycling seems to be it,” said the 26 year old who ultimately aims for a spot on Canada’s cycling team for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, “It’s kind of like hockey, we have trade teams. My trade team is Twenty16, this means there can be athletes that come onto that team from all places. But when it comes to the Olympics we get selected for a Canadian team to represent Canada, just like hockey.”

Vermilion local, Jackson works on her family’s buffalo farm in Vermilion when she is not competing and training. Jackson can be often sighted training on the roads between Lloydminster, Kitscoty, Vermilion and Wainwright. ”There is not very many cyclists on the roads around here and I think when vehicles see me it very surprising for them.”

For safety Jackson advises that drivers slow down and move out on the road when they see a cyclist.

Jackson is travelling a lot racing in the States, Canada and in Europe. But she and her husband have made their home base here in Alberta. “We come back every year for seeding and harvest, the work is very rewarding.”

Jackson did not get involved in cycling until she was age 19, when a man named Vaughn Cooper from Vermilion started a small triathlon group, swimming, cycling and running.

hooked.”

She succeeded in triathlon earning herself a scholarship to Trinity Western University where she finished her kinesiology degree in December 2014.

Jackson competed in the World University Championships in Uganda representing Canada and went on to win the triathlon World Championships last year in Edmonton. “Within the world of cycling there are championships every year, for example the women’s Tour de France – one day event called ‘La Course’. My team will get an invite and they will then select,” Jackson said she would love to get the call for ‘La Course’.

Jackson talks about the pressures of pro cycling, “It is stressful. All the girls have their own goals and there is a lot of competition. The media presence puts on a lot more pressure as well. Everything is just that much more hyped in California with cameras outside the hotels and

cameras on the motorbikes in the races.”

“Right now there is still less pressure on women’s cycling than on the world tour men’s cycling, if you don’t perform for your sponsors you won’t have a job. Women’s cycling isn’t at that point yet.”

Jackson’s determination, focus and motivation offers inspiration and she says that the athletic mentality can be applied to anything in life.

“Your body can adapt to anything you do. Even when your body is in so much pain and you think you can’t do any more, you can! When you are training, you see your body get faster and fitter. Things that you think you can’t do, yet you can. The only thing that limits you is thinking that you can’t do it.”

31,977 Pounds Sold At Vermilion 4-H Inter-Club Show And Sale

It was a hefty order but 25 buyers purchased 31, 977 pounds of beef from 21 young members at this year’s Vermilion/Clandonald 4-H Inter-Club Beef Show and Sale on May 25 at the Vermilion Fairgrounds.

The heftiest price paid was $3.70/ pound ($4706.40) for Clandonald 4-H member, Kamryn Oddan’s 1272 pound steer that was purchased by Everest Trucking.

Vermilion Club member Paul Dahoy’s Reserve Champion, that weighed 1306 pounds was not far behind as auctioneer Myles Wowk drove the price up to an even $3.50/pound ($4,571.00). The buyer

was Ireland Farm Equipment.

The heaviest steer in the show, toppling the scales at a whopping 1459 pounds, belonged to Vermilion 4-H member Grace Cleland. Viking Auction Mart purchased the steer for $2.75/pound ($4012.25).

Wowk warmed up the buyers before the show by mentioning their business names several times in front of the crowd in order to “loosen” them up he said and added “It’s like yoga.”

They certainly stretched themselves as only two steers dipped just below the $3 mark.

“It’s a great deal and I love to support 4-H,” said Larry Everest from Everest Trucking who purchased the Grand Champion steer.

The presentation of the Vermilion Habitat for Humanity house to the new owners and family took place on May 29.

A crowd consisting of committee members, volunteers and well wishers presented Brandy Robertson and her two daughters, 6 year old Entasia and 3 year Brandy Robertson and her family sit on the steps of their new home. old Ezaelia, their new 1,000 square foot home which is still under construction “A t H a b i t a t Ve r m i l i o n w e h av e conducted a long and meticulous partner family selection process,” said committee member Holly Day-Ferguson. “Our reward is to have found the ideal family and introduce them to the community at large.”

The Robertsons moved to Vermilion from Ontario two years ago. “It’s beautiful. I’m very excited and the children are picking their bedrooms already,” said Ms. Robertson, who is employed by FOCUS as a Special Projects Coordinator.

How to grow Rosemary

Native to the sun-baked lands around the Mediterranean, rosemary—the Latin Rosmarinus means ‘dew of the sea’—is an easy-to-grow herb partial to sandy, even gravelly soil and lots of sun. The surest and simplest way to grow this pleasant plant is to avail yourself of a small potted nursery specimen in spring, replant it in

a pretty container (diameter at least 30 centimetres) filled with light soil and set it in a warm sheltered place—balcony, deck or patio—within easy reach.

After that, only minimal attention is required: watering when the soil feels dry and perhaps a midsummer feed of liquid fertilizer. As ornamental as it is aromatic, rosemary may break into flowers as blue

as the sea.

When fall frosts threaten, shift the pot into your sunniest window, preferably in a room kept on the cool side, and be prepared to mist often to keep the little needle-like leaves from drying and dropping. That, or let the frost (and compost pile) take it, and start over with a fresh plant in the spring.

What used to be the “golden years” of life for seniors is now turning into any opportunity to spend even more time with their youngest family members. Nowadays, a growing number of grandparents are called on to provide child care for their grandkids, many of whom are growing up in two-income households. Others are helping to raise grandkids while providing financial assistance for adult children who may not be able to live on their own.

This trend has been corroborated in a few recent studies. Information from the Pew Research Center showed 7.7 million children in the United States were living in the same household as one of their grandparents in 2011. A University of Chicago analysis of a decade of data based on interviews with 13,614 grandparents, ages 50 and older, found that

61 percent of grandparents provided at least 50 hours of care for their grandchildren during any given year between 1998 and 2008. And an April 2012 study for the MetLife Mature Market Institute and the nonprofit Generations United, an intergenerational policy group, found that 74 percent of respondents provided weekly child care or babysitting service for grandkids.

Grandparents often cite helping their own children financially as well as staying in touch with grandchildren as motivating factors behind providing care. According to Generations United, staying in touch with grandkids can give seniors a feeling of self-worth and improve their overall health.

When spending so much time together, grandparents may develop special relationships with their grandchildren, who

may benefit from the knowledge and wisdom offered by their elders. The following are some lessons grandparents can share with youngsters. * Empathy: By sharing stories of how things were when they were younger, when opportunities may have been more scarce, grandparents can help teach grandchildren empathy. Grandchildren may learn to be grateful for the things they have and the people around them, rather than taking what they have for granted. * Family history: Grandparents can tell grandchildren about family members, including youngsters’ own parents, and shed light on the generations that came before them. Looking through photos or watching old movies can provide the avenue by which to start conversations about family history and give children opportunities to ask questions.

Vitamin D Both men and women age 50 and up have a reduced ability to produce vitamin D through exposure to the sun. Extra vitamin D will be needed from foods and

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eye diseases related to aging are the primary cause of vision impairment in the United States. Many people consider vision loss a natural side effect of aging, but there are ways men and women can protect their vision and reduce their risk of vision loss as they age. · Quit smoking. According to the National Eye Institute, smoking doubles a person’s risk for age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in men and women over the age of 50. It causes damage to the macula, which is the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision. If the macula is damaged, vision may be blurry, distorted or dark. · Protect eyes from ultraviolet light.

The American Optometric Association notes that UV-A and UV-B radiation can have adverse effects on a person’s vision. A short-term effect of excessive exposure to UV radiation is photo keratitis, a painful condition that can lead to red eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Longterm effects of such exposure include a higher risk of developing cataracts and damage to the retina, which is the part of the eye used for seeing. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunglasses that provide protection

against UV-A and UV-B rays. · Maintain a healthy blood pressure.

High blood pressure often referred to as HBP or hypertension, can contribute to vision loss as a person ages. The American Heart Association notes that HBP can strain blood vessels in the eyes, causing them to narrow or bleed.

HBP also can cause the optic nerve to swell, compromising a person›s vision as a result. Eye damage that results from HBP are cumulative, which means the longer it goes untreated, the more likely the damage to the eye will be permanent. Men and women can maintain a healthy blood pressure by eating right, exercising regularly and sustaining a healthy weight. · Take breaks from work. Computer vision syndrome, or CVS, is a legitimate condition that can develop when a person spends ample time staring at a computer screen. Adults and kids alike are susceptible to CVS, which can cause symptoms such as blurre d visio n, d ou ble visio n, eye irritation, and headaches. One way to reduce risk of developing CVS is to take frequent breaks from staring at the screen. A handful of 20-second breaks over the course of an hour can help prevent CVS. In addition, change lighting in the room where you work so you can reduce glare on the computer screen.

library Hoopla There was a “Hoopla” at the library on Thursday, May 28. At staggered times from 6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. library patrons were informed about a program called Hoopla that allows members to access DVD’s and other library materials without ever having to leave the comfort of their homes. Library Manager Stuart Pauls said, “The library’s role is changing from traditional media, it’s helpful to have streaming media.” Pauls added Hoopla is like Netflix, but with a library card and that it is not uncommon to see members only once a year, “when it’s time to renew their library card.” Harold Pullybank agreed the concept of being able to borrow a DVD from home appeals to him. Aladdin Production Entertains Bringing Talent And Eccentrics To Life

The Vermilion Theatre Productions ended with their final play of the year on a high note. The eccentric production of Disney’s Aladdin, consisting of a talented cast of 40, performed to a captivated audience in the Lakeland Alumni Theatre on the Friday and Saturday nights, May 22 and 23.

When street rat Aladdin, played by Jeff Frank from Kitscoty, frees a Genie from a lamp, he finds his wishes granted. However, he soon finds that the evil Jafar has other plans for the lamp and for Princess Jasmine, played by Jasmine Penz from Mannville.

The Genie was played by actor Darcy Millar.

“It’s a blast. Out of all my roles, the character of Genie is definitely in my top three for character. What a crazy guy. He’s fun and he’s eccentric, he’s like me in real life.”

Millar added, “Some would consider me like Jim Carey. I move around a lot and I’m very unpredictable. I started off the day doing a lot of vocal work in the morning.

I find it puts me in the right mood. It’s very effective. Also stretching helps, it creates

Marty received Silver in high jump and Stephen and Chelsea competed in Javelin and Stephen in 1500 m and Discus. Marty will now be heading to the Track and Field Provincials in Lethbridge.

On May 28 they packed up and took a field trip to Viking to get a closer, handson look at a real wetland. Joining them was Nathalie Olson an Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Battle River Watershed Alliance. They looked at the water quality in the lake and participated

Millar lives in Vancouver, “I like coming back to Alberta, its home, but I also love to explore at the same time.”

The character of Jasmine, Jasmine Penz said, “We started rehearsing for Aladdin in the beginning of January. Everyone was amazing to work with, we are like a family. We are all very close which helps make everything come together.

Jasmine was a really fun character to play, she storms out a lot and is very angry all the time, which is really different to who I am so it’s fun to play.”

The play was three hours in length.

Darcey Schroeder played the Sultan and also designed and built the stage set.

“When we are on stage it’s like the duck effect, everything looks calm on the surface but in the background there are a lot of people working franticly to make everything come together.” Schroeder said he watched the Disney movie many times and did a lot of voice work to bring his character to life.

With the recent events in the politics of Alberta, the matter of economics did not elude us! The economy of Dewberry School continues to flourish and prosper, even showing signs of improvement. How is this even possible? For one, our prosperity has been measured in a slightly different currency as are our expectations for production and allocation of wealth.

Our fortune lies in the treasure of our students’ athletic capabilities. With persistence, hard work and determination they continue to grow and progress to a higher level. Among the achievements of this booming economy were the junior high competitors that participated in the BTJHAA North Track & Field events on Tuesday, May 26. The following students advanced and will head to the BTJHAA

Vermilion 4-H Beef Club Report

The Vermilion 4-H Beef Club held its annual Achievement Day on Sunday May 24, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. The day started off with the judging competition where our members put their judging skills to the test and placed a group of four steers. The winners of this competition were: Senior: 1st. Kaylie Krys 2nd. Charlotte Wasylik, Intermediate: 1st. Ashley Jones 2nd. Ashley Corbiere Junior:1st. Clay Corbiere

2nd. Avary Hickman.

After that we began our club steer show. Our Confirmation Judge for the day was Mr. Jonathon Fox and our Showmanship Judge was Mrs. Shelly Fox. As the show progressed our judge chose the top two steers from each age group to compete for the Grand and Reserve Champions. Sydney Poliakiwski and Justin Chase advanced for the Seniors, Ashley Jones and Paul Dahoy moved on from the Intermediate group, and Jayce Sweeney and Clay Corbiere advanced from the Juniors. Mr. Fox then had the six steers come back into the ring to choose our overall champions.

Sydney Poliakiwski’s steer was eventually chosen as Grand Champion and Justin Chase’s steer was the Reserve Champion.

Following the confirmation classes our members competed in the showmanship and grooming competitions. The results were as follows: Showmanship Senior : 1st. Sydney Poliakiwski 2nd. Brette Poliakiwski.

Intermediate: 1st. Ashley Jones 2nd. Paul Dahoy Junior: 1st.Avary Hickman 2nd. Clay Corbiere Grooming Senior: 1st. Courtney Corbiere 2nd. Brette Poliakiwski Intermediate: 1st. Ashley Jones 2nd. Alexander Wasylik Junior: 1st. Clay Corbiere 2nd. Avary Hickman In addition to the steer projects, our club also had several female projects.

The results of these competitions were as follows: Yearling female class: 1st. Justin Chase 2nd. Avary Hickman

Two Year Old Cow/Calf Pair: 1st. Avary Hickman 2nd. Robert Watson Three Year Old Cow/Calf Pair: 1st. Brie Watson 2nd. Robert Watson The winners from these 3 categories then competed for the Overall Female Champion. Grand Champion Female was Avary Hickman and Reserve Champion was Justin Chase.

Other awards given out included Best Home Grown Steer to Paul Dahoy, and Best Home Grown Heifer to Avary Hickman. Jayce Sweeney’s 4-H steer had the highest rate of gain at 3.18 pounds per day.

After the show was done, we had a great meal that our parents prepared, it was a great way to end the day! So that concludes our 4-H year! Our club would like to once again thank all the people who helped and supported us throughout the year. J.R. Robson student Colton Wynnychuk is looking forward to spending 11 months in Finland as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Wynnychuk joined the Rotary club last December, “My Mum had always told me that there were opportunities to travel and then I heard the interviews for the exchange program were on and I thought it sounded like a great experience.”

Sixteen year old Wynnychuk will be going to Hamina in Finland on August 1.

He will be staying with a host family while attending school, and will be immersed in Finnish culture while continuing to attend Rotary events in Finland.

“I’m learning Finnish at the moment,” said Wynnychuk who will lose a year of school here.

“My friends are excited for me. I am looking forward to trying new things and learning a new language. I attended orientation in the spring and I met with other youth who will also be going on exchange programs. I know that there will be two or three other Canadians in my district.

“My family will not be visiting, they advised that it is not a good idea but I will be keeping in contact with everyone over Colton Wynnychuk is excited to be heading email and Skype.”

Family Ties At Dewberry Races

After six years of not racing, President of the Dewberry Chuckwagon Committee, David Bensmiller, will be participating in this year’s CPCA – SIGA Pro Tour Race.

“The oil patch is slower this year, so it gives me an opportunity to ride,” said Bensmiller.

David Bensmiller’s father is Buddy Bensmiller, who is well known in racing circles and who is also runner-up in this year’s Volunteer of the Year Award, sponsored by Direct Energy, for his contribution to chuckwagon racing in the Dewberry area.

“My dad remembers his dad Allan racing back in 1948,” said Bensmiller. “It’s in the blood.”

Dewberry is the second stop on the CPCA Tour. This year’s activities will begin on Friday, June 12 and continue to June 14.

The grounds open at 4 p.m. on Friday with Day One of the CPCA races starting at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday will kick off with a pancake

breakfast at the Fire Hall at 8 a.m. followed by the parade at 11 a.m. the Canadian Truck Riders Association Competition is from noon - 4 p.m. Day two of the races begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Cabaret at the Arena at 10 p.m.

On Sunday, a kids gymkhana will close out the weekend on Sunday from 11 a.m.

– 1 p.m. with the final day of races beginning at 2 p.m.

There are also two new events this year that Bensmiller is excited about.

Traditional native dancers/drummers from Frog Lake will be performing on Saturday from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. “They really do it up,” said Bensmiller.

Also new this year is the Trick Riding Competition for children. “There will be three or four different age groups… usually ranging in age from 4-18 years.”

Bensmiller’s 6-year old daughter Presly will be competing, but she’s still young enough where they lead the horse for her. Bensmiller said it’s a matter of time before they find out if she will carry on in the family tradition. “We’re hoping for it,” he added.

Because Presly’s horse will be led

in the arena Bensmiller said there’s not much to worry about.

“Something can happen just like in any other sport. You have to pay attention. I’ve been riding for years and nothing serious has happened to me.”

MLA Richard Starke and Leon Benoit have been invited to attend the parade, and though their appearances have not been confirmed, Bensmiller is hopeful
