Destruction At chrysler Over $50,000 in damage was caused to 12 vehicles parked at the Vermilion Chrysler’s sales lot by a hit and run driver on May 12. Hit And Run Involving Multiple Vehicles

Vermilion, Alberta - On May 12th, 2015, at approximately 9:06 pm, Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a hit and run which occurred at a car dealership located in the 4500 block of Railway Avenue in
Vermilion, Alberta. Upon police arrival, it was determined that the suspect vehicle had struck 12 parked vehicles which were parked on the lot for sale. It appears that the suspect vehicle had been travelling westbound on Railway Avenue prior to the collision. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a pick up truck with aggressive tires and should have extensive damage to the passenger’s side and front. An estimate of damages is not known at this time. Investigators are asking anyone who may have information regarding this occurrence to contact Vermilion RCMP at 780-853-4441. This past weekend was the famous Victoria Day weekend, also known as May long weekend or May 24 weekend. We look at it as the unofficial start of summer and the camping season. It’s the time to break out the travel trailers and tents, stuff our vehicles with barbequing items, sleeping bags, fishing poles and of course the yummy barbeque goodies that go so well with the many varieties of beverages of the weekend. Back home, in Newfoundland, May long weekend is almost as sacred as Christmas or any other famous holiday. It meant spending time in open gravel pits, bikes in tow and enough food to feed an army. Charcoal barbeques were an absolute must, countless bags of potatoe

chips, and for many a lobster boil up was the highlight of the weekend. Fishing was a definite and nine chances out of ten you spent a couple of weeks before hand out hunting for night worms in the dark with flashlights as they were the biggest, juiciest worms that no trout could resist. May 24 long weekend most importantly was the first official spring outing with friends and family. Newfie music would be blasting through your battery operated boom box or car speakers and you could be guaranteed a few Newfie jigs among friends were going to happen. The other thing you could bet your bottom dollar on was crappy weather. For as far back as I can remember, there hasn’t been one May long weekend where at least one day of it wasn’t pouring down rain, snowing or cold enough to skin you. The weather could be beautiful for days and days and look great coming up to the
weekend, but you always knew to pack winter coats and heavy blankets. Is May long weekend cursed? I have always thought so when it came to the weather. Each year, you can see and hear the excitement in people as they plan out all their activities for the weekend. I personally don’t even make camping plans anymore and maybe I can be called a humbug but the same words echo from my lips year after year, yep everyone is gun hoe for the weekend but you can be sure the weather is going to suck. It always happens. I had originally hoped that moving away from Newfoundland, my luck would have been better. Alberta was going to bring me nice May weather and I could finally enjoy a nice warm May long weekend. Well that didn’t happen. Eight years later and I still can’t say it has. Last year I made a Facebook status about the weather along with a photo.

My status went along these lines, yip its May long and how do I know? Surprise surprise, it’s raining!! This year with the beautiful weather we have been having lately I really thought the curse could be broken. Upon waking Saturday morning to a chilly room, As a car drove down the street I could tell it rained because I could hear the sound of tires hitting wet pavement. I jumped out of bed and quickly went to the window to look out and make sure I wasn’t imagining it; Lo and behold it was raining! I muttered to myself, yep it’s May long weekend cause it’s raining! Thankfully as the day went on the rain stopped and the sun came out, but we couldn’t get a perfect sunny warm day. The wind was high and it was still cold. So much for that curse being broken. I guess we can always hope for next year. I hope, even with our not so great weather, everyone had a safe and fun filled weekend with lots of memories made.

Pushing mid-May already, wow I must have blinked in that first half of the month. I hope the entire summer doesn’t go that fast…although summer isn’t officially here for another whole month. The first day of summer or Summer Solstice is June 21, 2015. We still have an entire month of spring yet, and a nice one at that. I am somewhat shocked as I look at the long range forecast for this May long weekend. There is no snow forecasted. It will be sunny and reasonably warm, a good weekend for camping. When I was younger and we had our children at home camping was a must on May long weekends. Although it wasn’t always the best weather-wise it was always the “winter shake out,” the start of our summer. However, having said that, we have woken up in the camping trailer/tent with a foot of snow on the ground. Many very fond memories with the family are from those camp-outs. Regardless of weather, the entire family enjoyed fishing, so a stream or lake had to be very near; mostly small mountain streams or brooks as they were loaded with hungry brook trout. Fish done to perfection on the campfire was definitely on the menu and enjoyed

If you’re a music fan and planning your summer, you need to add the 5th Annual Come By the Hills Music Festival August 14 and 15 to your calendar. “It’s a perfect summer weekend, especially if you like music, “says Phyllis Elmer, president of the Battle River Music Society. “It is truly a music Festival, and not limited to just folk or country. The music cuts across a number of genres and our line-up ranges from young, local talent to well-established musicians. Many of our artists don’t fit into one genre so you’ll hear and see a real variety, “she says. The hills, or more correctly, the Battle River Valley between Wainwright and Vermilion, Alberta is a perfect setting for the music festival. The Mistahiya Retreat Centre with its out-of-the-way setting and limited cell service are part of the overall experience. Festival organizers have decided to limit ticket sales to maintain the intimacy

by all. The campfire was the center of any camping experience, and also the hub of all the great memories. Living in rural Alberta is much like a lifelong camp-out, but it isn’t the same. It is certainly peaceful for the most part; we even have a perfect brick fire pit nestled under a huge picturesque elm tree. But it just isn’t the same, sure I enjoy sitting around that campfire, but since you’re right at home it seems there is something that just has to be done, and now with an “empty nest” it seems that May long weekend is slotted for the garden to be planted. Speaking of peaceful, just last night the wind finally died down and it was dead calm for an hour. I stood by my fire pit with a rake in my hands yearning for that campfire, my ears almost hurt it was so quiet and peaceful. Also so quiet and peaceful the reason my ears actually hurt is because I am blessed with “Tinnitus”, which many call ringing in their ears. Tinnitus can be the result of many causes and also has many symptoms. For me, it was our generation not using proper hearing protection around loud noises, and it is a form of hearing loss. I don’t have a ringing in my ears per say as people describe. For myself it is like the wind blowing or air escaping from a tire, so I don’t notice it at all when it is windy, but when it is dead calm I instantly realize just how bad it really is, and how much it can affect my hearing. It’s something for the younger gener-
ations to heed and practise safe ear protection around loud noises to prevent hearing loss. I now use hearing protection even when riding the lawn mower or using the garden tillers. Speaking of the wind, folklore has it that if it is windy on Good Friday, it will be windy and that wind will blow mostly in that same direction for 40 days. It blew good on Good Friday and from the east. Well I’m here to say that the wind hasn’t stopped blowing since Good Friday, however today is the 40th day exactly, so there are calmer days ahead, as it seems to have started last evening. I should have had the garden in already, a week or more ahead of time, but I am waiting for parts for my garden tiller, so it appears like the May long weekend ritual of planting the garden will ironically happen then. Speaking of rural peace and quiet even that can be shattered without a moment’s notice it seems. A couple of evenings ago I was taking a break from yard work to see when one of my favourite shows was airing that night. Miss Pickles, my pup, came to the living room screen door and asked if I could come out to play, I said “in a minute”… and in that minute I heard my worst fear; Miss Pickles was screaming in agony. I ran outside to the main road, which is way too close to our home, and I could see a vehicle stopped. I knew Miss Pickles got run over…she stopped crying when I ran up to her, but she was alive!!!

Friday’s line-up also features award winning singer songwriter Lynn Miles who will be appearing with Keith Glass, a founding member of Prairie Oyster. Friday will conclude with Alberta’s country roads troubadour, Jake Ian and his band. The music starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will wind up about 12 hours later with a return of the high—energy Boom Chucka Boys who rocked the hill to close the 2014 Festival. Since that appearance the group has won the ACMA Group of the Year award
were nominated for that same award by the Canadian Country Music Association. Included in Saturday’s line-up are The June Bugs out of Calgary with fiddler Scott Duncan. Besides traditional folk, the group also does gospel, bluegrass, blues, swing and country. Intervening acts include the guitar pickin‘ Steve Palmer from Moose Jaw, a rock blast from the past with Barry Allen 84 the New Rebels, storytelling songs from former solider TimIsberg. Balladeer Eileen Laverty, gypsy jazz from Billie Zizi and blues Juno winner lack Semple. Tickets go on sale on May 15th and can be picked up at the Vermilion Credit Union, Dynasoft Communications in Lloydminster, or at Globe Footwear in Wainwright. After checking her out, I was so thankful she got lucky; she was missing a lot of fur on one leg with a big gash on her lower leg but no bones broken or signs of internal damage. It scared the crap out of all three of us. The driver was a neighbour who knew I got Miss Pickles as a pup and so drove extremely slowly near the house. But Miss Pickles, cooling off in a puddle, came out of the ditch too quickly for the neighbour to swerve. She is still sore with a limp, but in good spirits and still mischievous as ever, and still able to herd all the farm kitties. She now hasn’t gone near the road and is very cautious around any vehicle. With my wife exempt, Miss Pickles is my closest friend for sure. She is one of the smartest pups I have ever had, so I hope this bad experience will prevent a worse one from occurring. Play safe and enjoy this May long weekend - get outdoors as much as possible and let the adventures begin!

Another Sweet Donation For Livestock Research Centre

Judy Sweet has made another donation to Lakeland College to help with the cost of the modernization and expansion of the Livestock Research Centre. Her recent contribution of $150,000 was made one year after she and her family donated $100,000 toward the project from their company Sportaken Holdings. An additional $100,000 was also donated in May 2014 from The Garth Sweet Simmental Foundation, a foundation established in memory of Judy’s husband Garth. Sweet continues to support the project because she likes the livestock research that is being done at Lakeland College
and she is impressed with the college’s Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland, a concept that sees crop technology and animal science technology students actively involved in operating and managing an agriculture business. “I also appreciate the attitude of the instructors at Lakeland. To them, it’s all about the students. They’re really student-focused which is great to see,” says Sweet, noting that it’s great that students have the opportunity to be involved in applied research projects and learn from the results. The conversion of the former bull test station at the Vermilion campus into a Livestock Research

The second phase, completed in 2013, was the addition of new c at t le an d shee p hand ling systems plus a scale system. The third phase of the modernization project will begin this month. Expansion is taking place on the east side of the building so a demonstration space can be created. The 1,000 sq. ft. area will also include washrooms and a small lab space. While sheep and cattle feed trials have been conducted in the Livestock Research Centre since 2012, there was no place for Lakeland staff and
students to meet with research partners and members of the public to discuss applied research projects or share results of livestock feed trials, says Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president of Lakeland College. “An important part of applied research is showcasing the technology and sharing the results. I guess the old timers still living could tell you how the air would be full of dust on windy days like we’ve just experienced. I can still remember in the threshing days and plow days when first the straw was all blown into straw piles and the remaining stubble was plowed under and double disced until there was nothing to stop the wind from drifting the soil. In these times summerfallow was worked about four times and there wasn’t a piece of anything to hold the wind. Most folks used a tandem double disc or a rig called a spring tooth harrow in spring a better pulverizer of soil didn’t ever exist. Come a dry, windy spring and the wind could cut the young seedling off. We worked all the stubble first thing in the spring too, and got the volunteer grain, weeds and wild oats started so we could work them down with the one way when we made the seed bed, after we seeded the crop the whole thing was harrowed and the soil pulverized some more. All the fiber that had come from the original

prairie sod was depleted and production was sorely affected. We needed the straw pile to feed our herd of cattle and later we baled all available feed we could grow. Nobody thought it was possible even to seed through much cover. The equipment available then just couldn’t handle the task! The early one way tillers were not easy to seed with as they tended to seed too deeply, so until the discers came out with smaller blades and seeding stubble with a double disc drill just made a mess. Can you remember the folks who had a habit of burning all the stubble so they could work and seed it. I can remember the county had to finally outlaw it; doesn’t seem that long ago. Of course straw problems were made worse with the coming of the combine and straw that wasn’t baled was simply just spread and had to be worked through. That was a game changer for
farmers who had no stock!! Anyone who ever travelled the south country of Alberta or Saskatchewan would remember the strip farming idea that saved that big open land from wind
erosion. The lessons learned down there slowly came north and appeared sometime in the 70’s and though we hadn’t the problem they had, we learned the idea of
trash cover. Remember the Nobel blade cultivator that left all the trash on top and equipment had to be developed to seed through it. We got a hoe drill that could go through a lot of straw and left a wonderful job, all those wonderful seed drills are ornaments n fence corners now, imagine!! The air was clearer for sure as more and more farmers got the message that less tillage saved moisture and the price of fuel made it essential to limit land tillage to the point we came to the minimum till or zero till era. Nowadays a field of summerfallow is about as common as a dodo bird. I can’t remember when anyone plowed a field anywhere near here lately even deep cultivators aren’t used to any extent. A trip past an equipment dealership now would see displayed a wonderful sprayer with high wheels and a folding boom that has taken over the weed killing chore and also has taken a great deal of work from swathers. So therefore the crops are more and more being straight combined and that usually leaves a lot taller stubble that isn’t put through the combine. A whole new set of problems but the new air seeders can sow the crop and hardly even leave a sign. The wind simply can’t get at the soil to dry it out and the narrow
seeder shanks hardly disturb any soil and no moisture or very little is lost. So now we have the benefit of nice well managed fields of heavy crop that seem to be seeded, sprayed and harvested with so little fuss and bother anymore. Any of us who can remember that small equipment and all the dust flying as the machines worked and over worked the land. There were acres of black summerfallow that blew and washed and had such problems of weeds at harvest as there was no spray to clean the crop. I guess we should be thankful for all the new methods of tillage, seeding and harvest that have made such a big difference in the look of the land and the clearing of the air. I’m still wondering if the whole system can sustain itself, and that our clean air hasn’t come at a cost we can’t afford.

It may be high school. It may be college or university. It may be a training program qualifying them to enter into a new realm of experience and career opportunities. Soon, to use a tired cliche, they will stand on the threshold to what will become the first day of the rest of their lives. Ominous. What shall I do with the rest of my life? There’s a question for the person in your life who can see into the future and will not hesitate to tell you precisely what to do, how to do it, and what to expect. What a relief! The only problem with following someone else’s design for a good life is...it’s not necessarily your design. Like the piece of clothing you bought that time after the sales clerk convinced you of how perfect you looked in it even though what you saw in the mirror had resembled an unwashed potato costume, structuring your future around someone else’s idea of what’s good for you is missing a key element: your input. We live in an impatient world. True, it’s often the case that any decision trumps indecision, but maybe the best thing a new graduate about to launch into his or her future can do is take a breath and consider the possibilities. If I were a graduate, I’d like someone to assure me that it’s alright if I don’t have a clear picture of my immediate future. I’d

like to feel confident that I’m not a loser if, when someone asks me, ‘What are you going to BE?’ I answer with my meek ‘I’m not sure yet.’ If I were a graduate, I’d like someone to confirm to me that no matter how unsure I feel right now, there is a place for me. I’d like someone to tell me that there are many viable paths to creating a good life, and I will undoubtedly find mine. If I were a graduate, I’d like someone to encourage me to explore those interests that stir my soul. I’d like someone to confirm that it’s alright to follow my dreams, even if it seems impractical, stupid, or impossible for me to achieve them. I’d like to know that it’s okay if I want to try. I’d like someone to tell me that no matter what I choose to do, if I love it and if I work hard at it, then I can become proficient at it and make it good. If I want to become the best gardener or physicist,
the best metal sculptor or somethingnobody’s-ever-heard-of, I’d like someone to say, ‘Do it’. I’d like someone to remind me that it ’s not only what I chose to do for work that defines who I am, but how I conduct myself in life, and how I define what it is that really matters to me. I’d like to know that who and what kind of a person I am counts, not just who or what the outside world perceives I am or ought to be. If I were a graduate, I’d like someone I respect and look up to tell me that no matter what I choose to do, they are proud of me and support me. I’d like someone to tell me that I will always have someone to count on, even if I stumble, make a few mistakes, change my mind, or all of these, as I make my way. If I were a graduate, I’d like that person to tell me to go set the world on fire, but in a good way. With no regrets.

“Christianity is not dying it’s in transition,” said new First United Reverend Andrew Kinoti Lairenge. Reverend Kinoti from Kenya began his appointment as Minster on May 1 at the first United Church in Vermilion and McQueen United in Mannville. He is originally from the county of Meru in East Central Kenya. Reverend Kinoti grew up as a Methodist in Kenya after which he graduated from St. Paul’s University Theological College in 2003. He was ordained in September 2005 as a Methodist Minis-
ter and left the country to gain different types of training. “The United States was a country that really stood out for me growing up in Kenya.” In 2005 Reverend Kinoti left Africa to travel to New Jersey in the United States to study a Masters of Theological Studies at Drew University. “I had a desire to continue my education and I wanted a broader view of the world and to understand diversity and other cultures.” After graduating in 2008, Reverend Kinoti returned to his homeland Kenya again. He went back to work as a Minis-

ter at the MCK Nkubu Methodist Church in the town of Meru. “I found life to be slow in Kenya on my return after living in Madison, New Jersey. There I would preach to 400 people twice a day. I also coordinated the Junior Sunday School. It is normal for Africans to spend two and a half hours per day at church because they are not in a hurry.” In December 2010 Reverend Kinoti m ove d t o M o n t r é a l i n C a n a d a t o complete his PHD in Biblical Studies at McGill University. Reverend Kinoti decided to go back into ministry work while finishing his PHD studies. He is now on his first appointment as a Minister in the United Church of Canada in Vermilion. “It may appear that Canadian Chris-
tianity is dying in many of the churches in Canada but I say that it is transition.” “ It can be ver y discouraging for people when the church looks like it is dying. But for me it is fascinating to see the faith that people have despite of this. In Vermilion there are on average between 40 and 60 people at a Sunday service.” His wife Sarah Kauri is in Kenya now but she will soon be joining him. Reverend Kinoti said he is looking forward to working in Vermilion and that the church has a lot to offer here. “If you are not interested in the spiritual aspects, there are great social aspects to the church. There are also counseling ser vices, pastoral care for the sick in hospital and AA meetings available at the Untied Church in Vermilion.”

When we think of spring cleaning, we often think of our homes or garages, but there is another type of spring cleaning, and that is for our bodies. Science has proved that there are many foods that can help detoxify our bodies. Unfortunately, we have probably all eaten many foods that are less than stellar. There is a reason junk food is called junk food. If you have every eaten foods such as French fries, processed meat, factory prepared foods, store bought cookies and baking then you have eaten trans fats, food additives, bleaching agents, carcinogens, nitrates and a whole host of chemical colors, flavours

and preservatives. Many of the ingredients in this salad are specifically designed to help cleanse our liver and body from these toxins. First of all, leafy greens such as spinach, arugula and dandelion aid in the production of bile, which in turn, aids in the removal of waste. Grapefruit contains both antioxidants and vitamin C, and it is useful in the creation of needed liver detoxification enzymes. Walnuts contain arginine, glutathione and omega 3, all of which assist the liver in detox. The salad dressing also contains a healthy assortment of nutrients to further increase health and detoxification, such as olive oil, garlic, ginger, turmeric and curry powder. The whole salad is a wonderful mix to help promote health. You will notice
there are not food additives in this salad. Other salads that are great for detoxification are coleslaw with carrots, and the broccoli, walnut, grape salad. Guacamole, green tea, carrots, beets and apples are also great foods to aid in detoxification. Happy spring. Spinach Salad with Zingy Dressing (serves four) For the salad 8 cups spinach 12 chopped dried figs 1 grapefruit 4 tablespoons chopped walnuts 4 teaspoons slivered almonds Thinly sliced onions On four separate salad plates, place first the spinach, the dried figs, one eight of a grapefruit chopped, one tablespoon of walnuts, a teaspoon of slivered almonds. Top with thinly sliced yellow or

red onion. Serve with zingy dressing. Zingy Dressing 2 Tablespoon olive oil 4 cloves of garlic, minced 4 tablespoons grapefruit juice 2 teaspoons finely sliced and minced ginger 4 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 teaspoon honey 1/4 teaspoon turmeric 1/4 teaspoon curry powder 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon salt Using a reamer juice half of a grapefruit. The other half is used for the salad. Sauté the garlic and ginger in one tablespoon of olive oil. Add the turmeric, curry powder, salt and pepper. In a separate small bowl combine the remaining olive oil, grapefruit juice, honey and mayonnaise. Stir in the sautéed garlic, ginger and olive oil into the grapefruit mixture.

St. Jerome’s VIBE Coach Crystal Jackson is packed and ready to embark on her volunteer teaching adventure working in Pohnpei, Micronesia with World Teach for 11 months. Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean. “I’ve always had a passion for working with youth and I love travelling,” said Jackson who is leaving at the end of June. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I looked into volunteering with World Teach when I was 19. The requirements are that a volunteer must be over 25 years old and that you must have a degree. My boss Pat Calyniuk has been very supportive and gave me the year’s leave. I know when I come back, I’ll be renewed and refreshed and I know I’m going to miss the kids that much that I’m going to want to come back.” Jackson will be teaching subjects including English, History, Geography
and Health. “It will give me the chance to see if teaching is the right career move for me in the future,” Jackson said. Jackson is 29 years old and has worked at St. Jerome’s school as a VIBE Coach for the past four years. She is an involved member of the Vermilion community and a member of many community groups including the Rotary Club, Early Childhood Coalition and the Allied Arts. Jackson however said she will not miss the winter. “I am so looking forward to missing the winter!” Jackson said, she nearly packed her winter boots, “but then I threw them out and said see you guys in 2016!” Some of Cr ystal’s students at St Jerome’s School stopped by her office during the interview and commented, “She is always in a good mood and we will miss her a lot.” Jackson says she will definitely be back, “I love Vermilion and I know I will be back, I will really miss my students a lot. I think there is so much potential for youth in this town.”

Of course, this is all speculation on my part; all or none of these scenarios could be true. But in true Canadian fashion, there was a flurry of letter writing to protest the show’s cancellation when the final episodes aired in 1985, but to no avail. That is until now. Let this be a lesson to PC’s everywhere who choose to cut too deeply into the very fabric of Canadian culture! Never underestimate the power of Canadian sentiment. Sure it might be on a slow thirty year simmer, but eventually that melting pot is going to boil over. Long live The Friendly Giant!

A pr il was a bu sy m o nt h for t he members of the Kitscoty 4-H Beef Club. On April 11th we held our club tour. This is where we go from farm to farm checking out each other’s projects. Mr. Raymond Beek drives us around in his school bus and we end the tour in Lloydminster to have lunch at Boston Pizza. It is a fun day. That same weekend we completed our community service by washing dishes for the Kitscoty Dinner Theatre. We were
split into two groups and half washed on the Friday night and half on the Saturday night. Then on April 18th and 19th, the entire club attended the Grooming and Judging Clinics at the Lloydminster Exhibition grounds. On the Saturday we all take in at least one of our animal projects and we learn how to wash, clip and fit them properly. This is very helpful for us getting our calves ready for achievement day. Then Sunday is all about learning how to judge a wide variety of animals and
other things like photography. We are taught what to look for and how to judge each category and then we fill out judging cards. Kitscoty’s club, including many Cleaver kids, placed very well at judging. The senior member category was swept by the club with Cheyenne Porter finishing 1st, Justine Eddleston 2nd, and Jessica Gauthier 3rd. Throughout May the members will
be busy finishing their animals at home in preparation for Achievement Day on June 6th. Our show will start at 12:00 p.m. at the Kitscoty arena, with supper to follow at 5:00 p.m. with award presentations after that. The steer auction will start at 7:00 p.m. followed by the slave auction. We wish to welcome everyone to come on out and check out our show and sale!
The Lakeland Rowing Club Submitted
It was a cool 1C on April 17 but it did not stop a crew from the Lakeland Rowing Club from getting on the water. Three members stroked two boats in the Vermilion Provincial Park at 6 a.m. and gave out a few shouts of excitement. A thin strip of ice lay at the far east side of the reservoir. This last reminder of winter would be gone by the next day. The club is always excited to hit the water and this year it is about a month earlier than in the past. This is all thanks to a new boathouse that was constructed llast summer. The boathouse was funded through the Alberta Community Facility Enhancement Program with donations from Vermilion Rotary Club and the Alberta Rowing Association. In the past the club along with the Rustler Rowng Crew, had to wait to haul boats down from Lakeland College. Now that the boats are stored near the water, the club is excited to have them protected from the weather and ready to go. Prepping them for races and maintenance is no longer dependent on the weather. Lakeland Rowing has also been able to begin its Learn to Row program earlier this year. The club is seeing increased
interest in people wanting to learn the sport. A second Learn to Row session will be held later in the year to allow more people to join. Rowing is an excellent activity for people looking for a cardio and strength exercise. The club usually meets weekday mornings. A new executive, with some coaching experience and training, makes it possible for crews to get out on some evenings and weekends. Some members enjoy the recreational aspect of the club. Other members are also planning to compete in regattas. The club is looking forward to several events this summer. Vermilion is helping Cold Lake start a rowing club. At the end of June are the Prairie regionals in Leduc. In July is the Western Masters in Burnaby B.C. At the beginning of September Vermilion hosts a weekend rowing camp where crews from Calgary, Central Alberta and Edmonton come to learn from various coaches. 4-H Beef Clubs Get Ready For Annual Show and Sale

Two of the area’s 4-H Beef Clubs are preparing for their Annual Show and Sale; the Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club and the Vermilion 4-H Interclub. This year marks the 50th anniversary (1965-2015) for the Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club. Assistant Leader, Lyndon Mansell said a plaque commemorating the 50th Anniversary will be permanently displayed at the Minburn Ag. Society and buyers will also receive commemorative plaques as gifts this year.
Twenty-three members will be participating in the show and 22 steers will be up for sale. There will also be three cow calf pairs to show as well as three heifers. The show takes place at the Minburn Agricultural Grounds on Wednesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. The sale begins at 6 p.m. For more information please call 780-592-2081. This year’s Vermilion 4-H Interclub (with Clandonald) Annual Show and Sale will be a two-day event with the Heifer Show taking place on Sunday, May 24 at 5 p.m. and the Steer Show on Monday, May 25 at 9:30 a.m. with the sale to follow. Vermilion Fair Grounds. There will be 21 members showing in the Vermilion club and 20 steers that will be up for sale. Five cleavers will also show their young calves that are between four and five months old. “It’s a lot of work for these kids,” said General Leader Derek Jones. “Animals have a mind of their own. They need to halter break and feed them twice a day all winter.” Jones added that 4-H provides an all round great experience for youth. “I am a big advocate for 4-H.” Another great supporter of 4-H is John
Stewart, said Jones. This year will also mark the 48th year for the Annual 4-H Come and Go luncheon that is hosted by the Stewart family, owners of Craig’s Department store in Vermilion. The luncheon is in support of the 4-H program and welcomes, parents, buyers, relatives and kids. This year’s luncheon will be held at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club on Monday, May 25 at noon. The Grand Champion Class will take place after lunch, at 2 p.m. and the sale will start at 2:30 p.m.

Happy spring everyone and what a busy time it’s been! The Vermilion 4-H Beef Club would first like to thank the staff of Vermilion Packers for providing our club with a great tour of their facility and teaching us various things about butchering and grading a beef carcass, and all about cutting and wrapping meat. Our club would also like to thank Mr. Robert Dixon (club advisor), Candace Reinbold,

Chase Miller, Brandon Hertz, Shayla Chappell, and Hannah Wootten all from the Lakeland College Stockman’s club, for putting on a great demonstration on clipping, grooming, and showmanship for our beef animals. Your tips will sure come in handy as we prepare our animals for our upcoming Achievement Day! On April 19th, our club held its farm tour. We saw the member’s 4-H projects and gave each other bits of advice on how we could each improve and prepare our animals for Achievement Day. We
concluded the farm tour by having lunch at the Cleland farm. Our club also participated in the annual Alberta Highway Clean-up on May 2. We met at the junction of highway 41 and 619. We split into groups and picked a total of 10 miles of highway as part of our annual fundraising activities. On May 6, our club’s members cleaned the Vermilion Public and Catholic cemeteries and cleaned up around the graves. This is one of the ways our club gives back to the community every year. We

Check out the following tips from the pros that will set you up for nothing but success: · Stay hydrated: From when the lawn is first planted until the shoots start to show, keep the top half inch of the soil moist. · Don’t be blunt: Make sure your lawn mower blades are sharp so you get a clean cut every time. You can stop by your local dealer to ensure your blades are ready for cutting. · Keep some length: Remember not to cut the grass too short. With a grass level from 5 to 9 cm you will have a fine, sustainable lawn. · Less is more: Don’t remove more than a third of the top growth in a single cutting. · Keep the mulch: Leaving the clippings not only eliminates your time spent bagging, but it actually fertilizes the soil and lawn. We were privileged to host the very talented Catholic Youth Leadership Program from Holy Rosary this past week. This group of talented young people put on four performances during the school day, an evening performance for the community and then a workshop on Tuesday morning for the Grade 5 class. Through song, dance, and acting the message of carrying the Cross of Christ was conveyed. The Cross symbolizes forgiveness, grace and love. The students really enjoyed the black light/white glove/shadow performances. During the workshop the Grade 5 students did a variety of activities with their eyes closed. They also learned new songs, dances and games. Thank you to Angele Champigny and her team of spectacular youth for bring their talents to St. Jerome’s and sharing their faith with us. St. Jerome’s Elementary students joined voices with students from Vermilion Elementary to celebrate music for Music Monday. Music Monday is celebrated all

across Canada on the first Monday of May. This year’s song was “We Are One”. After singing the song the students had time to play and interact with each other on the playgrounds. Early Monday morning, May 3, 33 Grade 11 students, Mr. MacMillan, Mr. Collins and Mrs. McCormack, with a pile of luggage piled onto the school bus to travel three hours to Camp Encounter for their annual retreat. The afternoon was beautiful as the students rock climbed, tried their hand at archery and completed team challenges. After being blindfolded the students followed a complex trail of twine through the bushes, up hills, over woodpiles ending at the feet of Jesus in the church’s cemetery. Mr. MacMillan then had the students reflect on their life journey what decisions they need to make to now to get to where they want to go and what legacy they want to leave. Many games of football, extreme Frisbee, Capture the Flag, Stones and Prey vs. Predator was played over the course of the two days. Students were grateful for the time they could spend as a class away from school enjoying each other’s company. Thank you to Mr. MacMillan for organizing this memorable experience and driving the bus and to Mrs. McCor-
mack and Mr. Collins for chaperoning. Grade 9 students participated in Try-ATrade on Wednesday, May 5 in Lloydminster. The students had an opportunity to try a variety of skills associated with the trades. They were able to ask questions and obtain information about the trades they were interested in. A variety of strange clothing was seen in the hallways of St. Jerome’s on Thursday as the High School students participated in “ABC” Spirit Day. The “ABC” stands for Anything But Clothes. Sheets, towels, toilet paper, garbage bags and curtains were the clothing of choice for the day. Modernization is quickly approaching. Staff and students are packing and starting to move everything out of the high school end into other parts of the school on a temporary basis. Phase 1 is sched-
uled to begin on May 14 and start on the south end of the school right up to Mrs. Fraser’s room. This means this part of the school will be shut off completely to students and staff. We are moving into the library, spare classrooms and shuffling room schedules in order to make this happen. This is a very exciting time but it will come with a very unique set of challenges and I thank the students, staff and school community for their patience during the modernization. St. Jerome’s Hot Lunch Program would like to thank the “Posse” hockey team fro their generous donation of the proceeds from their annual hockey tournament held in March. Thanks guys! The 2014-2015 Yearbook can be ordered for $40. Forms need to be in by May 25. The Yearbook arrives in early September.

St. Jerome’s Students Show and Shine BBQ Fundraiser For Nepal

Two St. Jerome’s Grade 10 leadership students, Dallas Maughan and Kyle Bardoel, with the help of their teacher Allan MacMillan have organized a fundraiser to support relief efforts in Nepal after the recent devastating earthquakes. The two young men have a big interest in vehicles and they decided the ‘Show and Shine’ would be a great way to fundraise. A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Nepal on May 12, less than three weeks
after a devastating temblor there killed more than 8,000 people. Vehicles will be on display at the Town of Vermilion office along with hamburgers and hot dogs on BBQ with some assistance from Lakeland College’s Emergency Training Center. “If we get our donation in before the weekend the federal government will match, dollar-for-dollar, all contributions to the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund between April 25 and May 25. Please help these young men do something great!” said St
Jerome’s School teacher Allan MacMillan. The event is scheduled for May 21 in the Town Hall parking lot from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The students are hoping the car show will draw people to come, have lunch and make a donation to the fundraiser. “We have had a brilliant response as far. We put the event out on Facebook it has attracted a lot of support. The Lloydminster Motor Club will be handing out LMC member cards by donation, which will give special pricing discounts at 15 local businesses throughout Lloydmin-
ster, Provost, and Wainwright. We will have cars on show from local dealerships and The Lloydminster Motor Club,” addressed MacMillan. All the money raised from these card sales on this day, will be donated to the fundraiser. If anyone is able or willing, to assist by bringing a vehicle on May 21 in the Town Hall parking lot from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m, please contact St Jerome’s School teacher Allan MacMillan.

The Grade 2s are learning about Superflex (our social skills hero) and the team of Unthinkables (social skills villains). The Grade 3s have created their own Shoulder Buddy that promotes positive self-talk and helps improve self-esteem. Grade 6 Study Hall will continue this month from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. on May 20, where students practiced PAT questions together. The VIBE Youth Advisory will take on another leadership role in our school with Positive Playgrounds. At recess, they will organize fun games to encourage cooperation, gain fitness skills, teach others how to deal with problems and pass on great games to younger grades. The School Website (ves.btps.ca) has changed and is under construction. There are some new sections that have been added like ‘Parents’ and ‘Students’. There is also a quick link to see if buses are running (a school bus in the top right corner). Please have a look around and see what’s changed. The site is being constantly added to and improved upon. If you want to contact the school via email, all you need to do is click on the Contact School button which is located in the bottom right corner on the main page. Next year, each teacher will have their own area on the site, which is very exciting.

Western Financial Hot Dog Fundraiser staff volunteers on Thursday, May 14. The 14th Annual Western Financial Hot Dog Sale took place on Thursday afternoon, May 14. A large crowd gathered and enjoyed hot dogs in the sun on the main street in Vermilion. The proceeds will go to the Western Communities Foundation. This allows the foundation to put money back into the community through ‘Exceptional Achievement Citation and Bursary Awards’ for local high school students. The ‘Building our Community by Infrastructure Grants,’ funding projects include: Vermilion Museum roof replacement, Habitat for Humanity, FOCUS renovations for affordable housing, Vermilion Stadium automated access doors and a Vermilion Stadium defibrillator. “We would like to thank the community for their generous support this year and we look forward to serving your insurance needs in 2015,” said volunteer and event organizer Judy Guton. Kim at Dragon Hare, you did an amazing job bringing out the uniqueness of each of our graduates; Nadia & Josie, yet again another fantastic meal, thanks for being so easy going and feeding all our graduates; Rita from Lakeland Flowers, everything was beautiful; Bulldog Energy Services thanks for helping the graduates out by sending out “Dust Control” before pictures, we had some beautifully polished trucks for pictures; Kyle and Rhona Kaziechko thanks again for the use of your home and allowing all the graduates to start their day off there for pictures; and last but not least a huge shout out to Mr. Maron, Mr. Stockal, Shayne Heward, Shawn Heward, and Curtis Ludwig for all their hard work getting lighting ready for Grad and doing lights on Grad (and Diego who helped to make sure lights ran smoothly on Friday). And let’s not forget Mrs. Wagner and Miss Miller who were the Grad Advisors. Kindergarten is on the go until June 12! They started their swimming lessons and community field trips. This month they are visiting the Elevation Yoga Studio, the RCMP station, the Vermilion Vet clinic, KFC, and Ready Mix Concrete. Their walking trips in Mannville will include the Mannville Credit Union, the Co-Op, Post Office and the Mannville Fire Station. We are so lucky to live in such a welcoming community where 5 year-olds are able to learn firsthand about the services in their community.
Mrs. DeFord’s Grade 1’s are starting their last unit in science, The Needs of Plants and Animals. Students will be learning about what living things need to survive, and adapt in our environment. They have also finished their unit on 2D shapes and 3D objects. The Grade 2 class has been learning about different cultures in several communities in Canada. They learned about the Inuit art of printmaking. Grades 4’s in science are finishing up their unit on Simple Machines and Building Devices that move. They will be working on a final project next week where the students will have to build an invention that will improve our daily life/work using simple machines. In math, Miss Cusack’s Grade 5’s wrapped up the patterns unit and are now working on fractions. Soon, they will be exploring the relationship between decimals and fractions. Grade 6 students are deep into mysteries as they learn about unsolved mysteries, and elements of mystery stories. They are working toward being ready to write their own stories. The Loch Ness Monster, Stonehenge, King Tut, Big Foot and many other mysterious events have kept them curious and excited to learn more. A book report puzzle was a creative way of sharing their Woodlander mystery novels with each other. It is really interesting to see the creativity and perseverance that these Grade 6 students have shown with the many projects that they have completed. Soon the task of study skills will need to be introduced as they head to their final two months of elementary and prove to themselves that they are and will continue to be successful.

The 4th annual Mannville Care Centre Breast Cancer fundraiser BBQ was organized by the Care Centre staff volunteers, who cooked lunch for a large crowd of supporters in the sunshine on May 12. Mannville Care manager Valerie Sebree said, “Today is very special to us because we feel it is important for us to support CURE as we’ve had members of staff here who suffered from the disease in the past.” The staff of the Mannville Care Centre volunteered their time, cooking, setting up and cleaning-up. BBQ organizers and volunteers were Helen Bader, Shannon Stoyko, Suzanne Pierson and George Steiner. Shannon Stoyko, who has worked as a PCA at the Mannville Care Centre for the past 28 years, said “I am a breast cancer survivor. It is a very treatable and curable disease. It’s all about remembering to get your regular checks. Having your routine mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer early, before symptoms develop and when treatment may work better.” The BBQ raised just over $800 and all proceeds were donated to the CURE Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. Care Manager Valerie Sebree said “With the dedication of our local supporters today and the great minds behind breast cancer research, we can change how breast cancer is understood. Approximately 30 young girls from, Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides, Path Finders and Rangers, assembled at the offleash dog park in Vermilion to plant trees, on Wednesday, May 13 as part of their Community Planting Service Project. Leader Priscilla Fluney said, “They’re thrilled to do something for animals.” The group received a $500 grant from the Toronto Dominion bank in conjunction with a project called T.D. Tree Days to purchase the trees, and the Town of Vermilion contributed supplies such as, mulch, fencing and rebar for the fencing. Director of Community Services for the Town of Vermilion, Shawn Bell, was on site to thank the girls for contributing to the beautification of the town. “I’m really excited that you guys are interested in planting trees.” Bell added, “Anytime the community wants to volunteer to add to the beauty and function of the town, the town is more than willing to have that happen.” Fluney said the project came about as a tie-in to their previous work with the pet adoption agency known as Furbabies Furever that operates in Lloydminster. The Girl Guides donated food and supplies to the organization. Guide member, Emmalee Moore said she was excited to get digging so the dogs could have some shade. A total of ten trees were planted around the perimeter of the dog park – five Manitoba Maple trees and five Swedish Aspen trees. “The ground is still a bit hard,” said Fluney, who pre-dug some of the holes herself.

There’s a fun new challenge this spring called Get Out Get Active! For the first time, the Kalyna Country Primary Care network (KCPCN) is in the challenge that includes nine other Primary Care Newtorks (PCNs) in the Edmonton area. And we are showing that what we lack in sheer numbers, we make up for in heart! The ongoing challenge started on April 27. Each PCN competes against the others to see who has the highest average number of steps. Would you believe that we have been #1 numero u s t i m e s? T h e n u m b e r s c h a n g e daily as people log their steps, and I haven’t seen us lower than fourth place. We also have a good number of participants! Our PCN team makes up about 5% of the total number of participants in the challenge. That’s already great, as
we are by far the smallest Primary Care Network in terms of the overall population numbers. And we are showing that we truly are an active bunch!
