International Dutch Dairy Students Live Learning At Lakeland College

Eleven international dairy students from Holland descended on Lakeland College in Vermilion on May 4.

The Voice talked with some of the dairy students at the AI Barn last Wednesday to learn more about their exchange experience. The students will complete an artificial insemination (AI) course for cattle during their time at the college before they spend three months over the summer working on host dairy farms throughout Alberta.

The students attend De Groene Welle, an agricultural training centre, in Holland.

Lakeland College AI instructor Sean McGrath said, “They are fun to teach, they have been coming here for 15 years now.”

McGrath added, “Lakeland College offers a 28-hour AI course and a refresher

course every spring at the Vermilion campus. The students can learn AI skills to use on their own beef or dairy herds and bring some new skills and experience back to Holland.”

The workshop combines classroom instruction with extensive hands-on practice covering topics on insemination procedures, semen handling, reproduction, anatomy and physiology.

Dutch international student Arjen Goos said, “I like it here a lot so far and it’s a really nice country. I’m only here ten days and my English has improved a lot. I live and work on a farm in Holland. But it’s very different to the farming here. We breed beef calves that go to the slaughter at 26 weeks. They are produced for white meat, a delicacy in Holland.”

The students said they look forward to attending rodeo for the first time over the summer and that they might even try bull riding.

You could say The Lakeland Runaway fundraiser that took place in Vermilion Park on Saturday, May 9 was a runaway success.

Event organizer Tami Klatt said the weather was “a lot better than last year,” and 210 people registered for this year’s event, surpassing the 200 mark they were aiming for.

There was a slight chill in the air, but the sun was shining when the gun went off at 8:30 a.m. signaling the start of the 21.1 km half-marathon and the 5 km walk. This was followed by a 10 km run/walk as well as a 2 km walk/run for children under 12.

A first time participant in the 5 km walk was Charlotte Myroniuk of Minburn.

“I walk in Minburn park everyday. It’s my therapy,” said Myroniuk who began walking after she lost her husband to cancer a year and a half ago.

Although she doesn’t time herself she was hoping to complete the walk within 40 minutes. All the runners and walkers in the race were equipped with a timing chip.

“It would be nice to win a medal,” she added. “But if I don’t win, I’m just hoping for a personal best.

Myroniuk ended up in first place. After the race she commented on the terrain.

“I didn’t expect the hills. There were three of four really steep ones.” Overall Myroniuk said she was excited about her win and added that she could have found “a hundred excuses not to be here, but sometimes you just have to push yourself.”

Klatt said the hills provide a good training ground for ultra cross country marathons like the Sinister 7 or the Canadian Death Race; two grueling marathons that are not for the feint of heart.

The Lakeland Runaway fundraiser that is hosted and organized by the Lakeland Rustlers Cross Country team, is also the second leg in the Denwood Outdoor Athletic Club (DOAC) series.

“The third leg is set to go in September,” said Klatt.

As for the Lakeland Runaway race, Klatt said it will be on again next year, same time, same place.”

Time To Prepare Gardens, Lawns, and Children

“The May long weekend is usually the rule of thumb when it comes to planting,” said Bonnie Williams, co-owner of Lawns Gardens Landscapes in Vermilion. But now is the time to “prepare,” she added.

Bonnie and her husband Jim Williams have run their family owned gardening business for the past 23 years; 20 of those have been at their present location on Railway Ave. “Preparing beds, prepping pots, rototilling, cutting back perennials; if you haven’t already done so in the fall, as well as pruning certain trees that aren’t leafed out, aerating and dethatching lawns and fertilizing can all be done now,” added Williams.

Williams said most customers come in with questions about this subject as well as how to eradicate pests from the garden and lawn, how to use products and how to maintain trees and shrubs.

Presently there are some frost hardy pansies in full bloom as well as a host of

other colourful flowers, grasses and trees in and out of their greenhouse.

“People like the fruit bearing trees.

Apples and cherry trees are always popular this time of year.”

A more recent blue fruit bearing shrub that is growing in popularity due to its antioxidant benefits and its early blooming (around mid-June) is the Haskap, also known as the “honey berry,” said Williams.

The Haskap is well suited for the Vermilion area as it is winter hardy and can withstand temperatures up to -45 C, while the flowers can withstand temperatures up to -7 C without sustaining any damage.

“It is always a good idea to check the zoning of trees and shrubs in the area you live in.”

Williams noted that another popular continuing trend in gardening this year is the fairy garden which appeals to both adults and children.

Denise Campbell, the winner of the Mother’s Day Draw put on by local participating businesses and the Vermilion Voice, was full of excitement as she discovered, she not only won one of the prizes but all of them.

Campbell, who teaches at Mannville school and is a mother of four children, dropped by the Voice office on Saturday, May 9 to claim her prizes along with her 10- year old son, Owen.

Owen went to the participating businesses to enter his mom in the draw during the week and said, “It was exciting to find out my mom won the Mother’s Day Draw.”

Campbell said, “Being so busy this weekend with numerous events, winning this draw made Mother’s Day just perfect. I am just thrilled to have won and I want to thank all the participating businesses for their generosity.”

Let me start off by saying I am not a political person.

I know I should be but quite frankly I find politics to be a two-faced world and find it hard to believe the muse of either party. I have the belief it doesn’t really matter what they say while out campaigning; human nature is naturally designed to make people say what they think others want to hear and to make promises they know are impossible to keep to win the votes needed to get their party the majority win.

I could sit and listen to each candidate and be swayed in either direction depending on what was said at the moment, if it was a topic I felt passionate about.

If I was passionate about our healthcare issues and our elderly I could look to the NDP promise of creating 2000 more long term care beds over the next four years.

If I was feeling passionate about environmental issues I could be swayed by the

NDP’s promise to protect the environment and grow our economy at the same time.

If I was a person working and living on a minimum wage income, I could be moved by the promise of an increase to the minimum wage to $15 an hour, because let’s face it, no-one can live on that especially a single person or single parent.

Politicians can promise you the world, but in my opinion, they better put the money where their mouth is.

Last weeks’ elections showed that Alberta residents wanted a change in government and had lost trust in the previous government’s 44 year reign; but did they REALLY want change or was it just to prove a point that they could evoke change? Looking at comments on social media, it could make a person wonder if they really did?

Orange is the new blue, but will it come at a cost to Albertans? Are they ready for the changes which may come to be?

Personally, I think the new government and incoming Premier Rachel Notley means well and does have some really good ideas, but I do have some concerns.

My first concern is the proposed increase to the minimum wage. While I think it is

necessary for an increase, will the increase cause a snowball effect, where products we now pay semi reasonable prices for will increase to help compensate business owners for the increase they will be paying out in wages? I would think, yes. Will our already high cost of living inflate even higher because of higher wages? Let’s face it, the cost of living now is far out of control because of our high wages.

Secondly, we all know, oil production is a dirty industry and can be disastrous to the environment if not monitored closely.

But if pipelines, like the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline or TransCanada Corp Keystone XL pipeline becomes locked in environmental disputes and our government is not willing to work with the oil industry could that be one of the contributing factors to send our already fragile economy into a final tailspin?

As for our healthcare and educational systems, I am a firm believer they should never be touched, unless it is to make it stronger and add more funding. Our healthcare system is already strained to the brink with long wait times and not enough professionals to care for our sick and elderly.

Education is a vital part of keeping our economy strong as we are in dire need for educated trade and professional people.

Our future generations require a top notch education at an affordable level. Without an education, our children and our children’s children would be on the road to poverty and despair.

Maybe this change in government will be good for Alberta, however it could be the train wreck some people seem to think it will be. None of us can tell the future, we can only hope it will be a positive change.

One thing is for certain, the change has happened and we can only hope that the politicians of our province put away their egos and work together to try and figure out what is best for the future of Alberta. We the people put our trust in our government to make the best and proper decisions for us.

My hope is our government will stand united from all sides of the floor, listen to each other as all parties have some good ideas, combine their knowledge, and do what’s best to make the province of Alberta all that it can be.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, Liberal Member of Parliament Chrystia Freeland has attacked our Government’s responsible decision to ensure the federal budget properly accounts for the economic impact of declining oil prices. Canadians understand our approach. What Canadians do not understand are the economic schemes of the Liberals, who would disregard uncertain economic times, reverse our tax cuts for middle-class families, and would expect the budget to “balance itself.”

Our Conservative Government has now tabled a balanced budget of which all Canadians can be proud. It includes measures Dear Editor, Last week, 1½ million Albertans exercised their right to vote in the provincial election. According to Elections Alberta, more than a million more could have voted, but didn’t. They stayed home. That’s interesting because in most provincial elections the margin of victory in many ridings is so narrow that, province-wide, fewer than 10,000 additional votes going one way or another can easily shift a dozen ridings— or more—from one party to another. Small numbers of voters can have a big impact!

In commenting on people who choose not to vote, novelist Richelle Goodrich said, “Have you ever stopped to ponder the amount of blood spilt, the volume of tears shed, the degree of pain and anguish endured, the number of noble men and

As a result of the changes we have put in place since 2006, businesses will be paying 46% less in taxes. These measures will allow business owners to keep more money to reinvest in their business and to help them with their retirement.

And, our budget implements the Family Tax Cut and Benefits Plan, including the enhanced Universal Child Care Benefit, the

doubled Children’s Fitness Tax Credit and income splitting for families with minor children.

Economic Action Plan 2015 returns Canada to balance while further reducing taxes for families and job-creators. Despite the misleading claims of the Liberals, Canada’s fiscal house is in order under Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Now that we’ve balanced the budget, Ms. Freeland and the Liberals should get behind our responsible plan to help Canadians balance theirs.

Goodrich says that when we do vote, we honour the sacrifice that others have made.

Nevertheless, most people will acknowledge that the right not to vote is part of the freedom that is ours as Canadians. It’s just that when we don’t vote, we give greater weight to the ballots of those who do.

The fact is that in Alberta, and in Canada, we live with opportunities that many people never experience. We observe public debates, listen to criticism of our leaders and the clashing of opinions, and then each of us has the opportunity to go to a ballot station where we can privately express an opinion. Our expressed opinions are then acted upon. Ordinary people determine who sits in our legislative assembly.

In many countries, publicly expressing political opinions or criticizing senior government officials occurs only at great personal risk. In Canada, we need not fear such a thing.

As the Wildrose candidate in VermilionLloydminster, I want to express my sincere gratitude to every person who did exercise their right to vote in the recent election. Sincere congratulations and thanks to the many volunteers, donors, and workers from all parties. Your efforts help to ensure provincial election campaigns are filled with vibrant debate.

On our Wildrose campaign, the camaraderie, shared laughter, and hard work of our volunteers won’t be quickly forgotten.

The Wildrose Party had five seats when the last legislative session was dissolved.

We will hold 21 seats in the upcoming

session. As many people know, Alberta voters decided that the Wildrose will be the Official Opposition. It’s an important and essential responsibility, and one that my Wildrose colleagues take seriously. Welcome to May. We didn’t receive m a ny A p r i l s h ower s to b r i n g M ay flowers, but the green explosion is in process this very minute. In fact, it’s time to mow my huge lawn already.

The record I have logged in 20 years is May 5th for full bloom leaves on the trees along the Battle River; leaves were on the trees in April. However, full bloom leaves were late, but still full

by May 4th this spring.

So that sets another new record ag ain t hi s s pr in g. I m ay eve n g et the garden going at least a week, or perhaps a couple of weeks earlier than the May long weekend, which is more normal. April went by quickly, as will May, likely, due to being so busy with yard and outdoor chores.

However, I have still been doing mini-outdoor adventures and a couple of very interesting adventures. Whenever I get a spare hour on the weekends, I grab Miss Pickles, my pup, and we head out antler shed hunting.

The shed antlers being the bonus, but in fact it’s just getting out there, training for Miss Pickles and a way for her to burn up some of that endless energy. The long walks don’t do me any harm either as I am still burning of f some of that ex tra body weight from winter.

This past weekend we found what I call the “Crocus Field of Dreams.” We went antler shed hunting just a few miles from home on a large piece of natural meadow and bush I know well.

I was shocked to see all the crocus flowers. I have never seen so many in one spot in my life. In fact, I have probably seen more crocus flowers in one hour than I have combined in the previous 20 years.

I will revisit that natural meadow ever y spring for an easy find of my s ur e s i g n of s p r i n g. A nt l er s wer e evading us, but Miss Pickles found an Alberta vehicle licence plate.

The licence plate was in surprisingly good shape considering the date was 1973. It had laid there for 42 years. We also had three large horses come trotting over to visit us.

Miss Pickles came unglued as those were the biggest farm kitties she has ever seen. She stuck to my heels for the rest of the morning and wasn’t so fast to explore. I hope that didn’t end her antler shed hunting career.

I also went on a unique adventure this past Friday, A well-known outdoor e d u c at i o n Ir m a teac her, S hel d o n, called me. I always welcome Sheldon’s calls as we worked together to set up the NASP, National Archer y School Program in the Irma school.

Sheldon asked if I wanted to get up at 3:30 a.m. on Friday morning; my first reaction was to laugh, because if

it’s not bow hunting season. He then said it was to take part in the watch of the annual Sharp-tail grouse dancing grounds.

To watch the “Sharp-tail Strut ” as t he sun r i ses was an out st an d ing opportunity, of course I was in. I met Sheldon and a dozen of his outdoor education students at the main gate of Camp Wainwright.

Camp Wainwright and the Wainwright Wildlife Society work together with this great program. Laurence, an elderly wise gentleman, was our guide for the day. Laurence has been taking part in this annual Sharp-tail watch for an incredible near 30 years.

Af ter a safet y orientation at the base range control, we headed out as a group into an isolated area of the base. We hiked to our watch as the glow of the rising sun was just visible on the east horizon.

Upon our arrival, there were six blinds like little ice fishing huts set up in an area of a regular size home.

Once in the blind, we peered out the cut out windows and waited.

The blinds were set on a “Lek”…a Swedish word meaning a “place of gathering” that looked much the same as any natural prairie hillside.

However, one could see small trails throughout.

The male grouse gather at this Lek to display mating rituals. Laurence has revisited this same exac t Lek site for the last 28 years. As the sun’s warming rays warmed the blinds all was quiet.

I thought “ Is this really going to happen? ” when sud denly a single male grouse flew into the middle of the circle of blinds, then another and another. Soon there were a dozen or so and the show was on. The Sharptails all fluffed up with bright purple and yellow patches on their neck and heads. With wings fanned backwards they did their incredible fast stomping dance, their legs thumped the ground so fast it sounded like .50 cal machine guns going off…a familiar sound on the base.

They chased each other around, g e t t i n g i n t o fe a t h e r f l y i n g f i g h t s , clucked loudly with sounds like they were saying “perfect perfect” like they were rating themselves.

T h ey d o a l l t h i s to i m p r e s s t h e females, but there were none around to watch, but they continued with their “perfect” strutting. After an hour or so, a female showed up and the show was fast action then.

The action was non-stop except for when a moose and later a coyote strolled by on a fine morning’s jaunt.

At one point we had about 20 birds all around us, with one even on our blind.

The strut dance sounded like thunder above.

Several hours later they suddenly disappeared as quickly as they appeared, leaving one with a “wow” sensation. We returned to the main base to the main mess hall for a hot breakfast put on by the base and chat-

Yes, we had boundaries and we were taught to stay within them sometimes with painful reminders. The senior high badminton players demonstrated their love and determination for the game as they headed off to the provincial playoffs in Lloydminster. Competing against teams from all over Alberta they turned on the heat and played fantastically. Torin Johre and Lucas Dennill roared through their matches and came out flaming with a 4th place finish. How amazing is that? We were so proud to have you representing badminton talents of Dewberry School as the 4th best in all of Alberta!!

I can recall too in my early days at school, which I rarely had a recess or noon when I wasn’t in detention. I was a stubborn slow learner it seemed. Mom and Dad delegated duties and chores and woe betide you if you skirted any part of that process. Yes, you had to mind the boundaries. As we came of age and were allowed the privilege of driving, a whole new set of boundaries had to be maintained, right?

Dad told us in a no-nonsense tone of voice, if he ever heard of us taking liberties at the wheel, the next vehicle we drove would be our own. My, how grand we thought it would be to show off a little.

I’m sure you can remember the temptation.

Those teenage years when life is so full of challenges of learning and doing we nearly all took part in sports, like playing ball in our area anyway, and we had to learn the art of playing the game with spirit and being able to accept that maybe sometimes even good players have to lose!! A hard lesson, but one that had many benefits. Yes, through life there always seemed a limit to what you could do or what was expected of you and you

knew there were penalties if you got careless and relaxed those controls. Think about speeding and seeing the blue and red lights in your rearview!! Guess you got outside the lines there a little eh what?

Through life you certainly were subjected to time of loss and grief and you really had no idea of where the lines were and how you could fix the picture and correct the picture after you did colour outside the lines. Guess complications arise for many reasons and we can have sympathy for little children who get outside the lines a little because they really didn’t know any better either!! Remember the old saying “Too late old and too late smart,” really hits it about right!!

As we age and our health takes issue with us we find we must learn the boundaries again. When we’re young we can do hard physical jobs, play vigorous sports, and seemingly get by without too many injuries or aches and pains, but over the span of time we suddenly realize the boundaries are getting hazy and we think maybe now that we know where they are we can crowd and bend them a touch.

Then there are the boundaries that tell us we should live within our means and not borrow ourselves too deeply in debt. That

Who would’ve thought? No matter the outcome, the students became involved in a real life procedure and experienced a valuable lesson about the importance of voting! Here’s hoping they’ll extend this practice into their futures for every election.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Super Hero Day! A frenzy of guardians, savors, and defenders swept through the halls of school last Thursday. Not only were the staff and students in costume but some of them maintained their persona throughout the day. Leaping tall buildings?

Maybe not, but they sure did fly around the playground and jump at any chance to assist anyone in need. Glad to see that help is not too far away, even when we play dress up!

The fever hit an all-time high by Thursday evening! Many students turned their passions stage side! From a beautiful display of artwork to performances abound students revealed their talents in the first talent show of the year. What

an amazing show of vocal abilities, piano genius, dancing, roping and even some humorous air guitar comedy. Did someone see a juggling unicyclist? Sure did!

Teacher, Kurt McLean even strutted, or rather rode, his one wheel around the gym while juggling! Wonderful job, everyone! Not only do you display athletic abilities you also shine with hidden gifts!!

Continually, we have witnessed hard working students, but over the last few days we have observed an internal fire in

We as seniors, I’m talking about my generation now, have to realize that not everyone is privileged to grow old and take for granted we’ll always get around and do like we did in our youth. Well I can see a few folks still dancing and going full speed in their 90’s but, I’ve also seen a good few who have barely made it to 60 and are wheelchair or walker bound. We all have to realize our limitations and we are bound by realities of life to live within them. It must be a hard lesson to realize your limitations don’t include walking, or driving anymore and you need help to get mobile. I guess I’m happy, I can still get around to some degree and though not anywhere near I could when younger there still is a whole lot I can feel blessed about. Whatever our limit is, keep pressing to make sure you get all you can from whatever circumstance you’re in. While I can’t dance, I can still play and listen to the music. Thank goodness and God I can still write too.

Appointment Alice Wainwright-Stewart President and Chief Executive Officer

Lakeland College Board of Governors is pleased to announce that Alice Wainwright-Stewart has been appointed president and chief executive officer of the college.

Ms. Wainwright-Stewart began her career with Lakeland College in the early 1980s and served as the vice president, academic since 2005. During her tenure as a vice president, the college became actively involved in applied research and introduced a number of new programs including heavy oil power engineering, renewable energy and conservation, street rod technologies, western ranch and cow horse, and sign language interpretation.

Other highlights during her time as vice president include increased enrolment, retrofitting the Trades Centre mezzanine and modernization of the Applied Engineering Building at the Vermilion campus, and construction of the Energy Centre at the Lloydminster campus.

Throughout her more than 30-year career at Lakeland College, Ms. Wainwright-Stewart has served the college in a variety of capacities including as an instructor, chair, and dean.

Ms. Wainwright-Stewart has a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts with a teaching certificate, and a master’s in early childhood education from California State University of Northridge. She is working on a doctorate in higher education from the University of Liverpool and has successfully completed all course work. She is currently in the research phase of the program and expects to complete her doctorate in 2016.

This week, we treated our old dog to a bath and a cleanup clip. Wow. I hardly recognize her. So fresh. So clean. So uncharacteristically groomed. So not smelling like her usual motley dog self.

I predicted this unnatural state of cleanliness would last approximately half a day.

The new scarf neatly tied around her everyhair-in-place, glossy neck? My best guess was that it would become conspicuously absent within twenty-four hours.

Our dog, who celebrates her 15th year this month, complies with most of whatever we deem necessary to allow her to continue sharing our living space. The

Happiness is a Dirty Dog

groomer always comments on her good behaviour. What a friendly dog! Absolutely.

She is a friend to all, a true gentle heart who wins over anyone willing to pay her three seconds of attention. I do wish she could sweep up after herself, but you can’t have everything in a canine.

She’s a really great dog in so many ways, but cleanliness and fresh scarves tied about her neck are not high on her list of priorities. Her transformation occurred on Monday morning. By Monday evening, she still smelled alright, even though an array of grass, small sticks, and what looked a lot like birdseed already clung to her sleek coat. (She likes to roll.) Her nose was dirty, too. Probably from digging a hole and then carefully burying that pretty scarf.

Foolishly, I’ve tried many times to reason with this faithful canine friend of mine. She’s a very attentive listener. She’s an easy companion. She’s quiet and patient, able to hold eye contact for as long as it takes for

me to explain to her with my best human to dog logic how much better it would be for all of us if she just, you know, cared a bit more about her personal appearance. When I pause, she usually fake sneezes, then rolls over on her back slothfully to glance back at me, the big pink tongue hanging slack out one side of her mouth. Graceless, that dog.

Beautiful? Of course. But no manners at all sometimes.

When we went walking Tuesday morning, it was still early. I left my morning hair uncombed. I think I might have heard a faint inner voice whisper something about dogs and their humans resembling one another.

Myth, I thought. I wore a baggy old sweater and my old black shoes with the hole in the left toe. We were in ultra casual, walking in the field mode. She sniffed tall grass and checked a few discarded fast food containers (just in case) while I watched for birds and hummed the melody to a song rising up from somewhere in memory. It was dusty

on the hillside, and a little cool for May. The song, I think, was popular in the 80s.

Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’. I only remembered the chorus and that’s what played on the inner turntable of my mind-----replacing the word ‘girls’ with ‘dogs’-------as I sat down on the grassy hillside squinting into what remained of the sunrise. Dog girl sniffed at something near the fence line, then dropped to the ground in the spot where no doubt the dirtiest of dirt piles had accumulated, rolling over and over on her back until whatever it was needing scratching felt satisfied.

I think I can say we both felt the ease of contentment in our shared morning reverie, my old dog and I. If we were to take a cue from observing the antics of a wise old yellow dog, we might discover being clean and coifed as somewhat overrated when it comes to experiencing a genuine moment of simple happiness.

New Lakeland College President Shares Her Vision For The Future

Alice Wainwright-Stewart knows the heartbeat of the Vermilion/ Lloydminster region better than anyone; however, this was not always the case.

The new Lakeland College President was born and raised in Los Angeles, earning two degrees from the University of California. She began her early teaching career working in intercity Los Angeles.

“I fell in love and married into a family with a farming background here. It was an extreme culture change at first getting used to the harsh winters.”

In 1987 she became a duel citizen and says that she never looked back.

“Canada has been very good to me. I love this area. I travel a lot and when the plane touches down in Edmonton and I head towards Vermilion, it’s home.”

Wainwright-Stewart was hired as a fulltime instructor at Lakeland College in 1985.

Wainwright-Stewart’s 30 years of experience at Lakeland College is reflected in her vision for the future. “The College was in a good state when President Glenn Charlesworth left. I plan to take it and move forward.

We’ve been able to balance the 2015/2016 budget. We anticipated cuts but fortunately no permanent staff had to be let go in this budget. We have to look at continuous

improvement, we have to make sure that we are using the public money in a very conscious and important way and we need to look at how we’re using these funds to educate our Albertans.”

Wainwright-Stewart promises she will use her 30 year history with Lakeland to create a stable environment.

“There is no other institution that has ag, environment, trade, energy and emergency training all under one college institution. I believe we can create synergies within those areas. I think there are some things we can do for our north east Alberta that set us apart. Not many people know that Lakeland College ranks 20th in Canada in applied research.”

Wainwright-Stewart believes the heart of Lakeland College is helping people to grow and develop and reach their potential.

The new President, reflecting on the recent change of government, said “I’m sure that there will be changes ahead and we will be ready for them. I’m anticipating that we go forward as we are. It’s important that we keep the stability that we have now.”

It is obvious the passion WainwrightStewart has for the surrounding areas of Vermilion and Lloydminster. She understands the importance of this region and how the region can really help Lakeland College.

“Lakeland College is a hidden gem, I listen to what our students tell me about how being able to come to Lakeland College has allowed them to create a career for themselves. How they are more settled going forward to the bigger cities. They tell me about the opportunities they have from being in smaller classes and how that enhances their college experience. The

international students have told me how the communities here have been so welcoming. There are people in the communities here who really care about helping our young people to grow and develop.”

Wainwright-Stewart lives in Kitscoty. In her free time she enjoys trialing her English Springer Spaniel dogs across North America and rides cutting horses.

Alice Wainwright-Stewart Named President Of Lakeland College

It’s no longer an interim appointment.

Lakeland College Board of Governors today announced that Alice Wainwright-Stewar t has been appointed president and chief executive officer of the college, a position she filled on an interim basis for the past six months.

Wainwright-Stewart was appointed president after an extensive search process. More than 30 people applied for t he p o s it i o n an d t he c o ll e g e’s search firm completed in depth interviews with 13 candidates. The board’s search committee inter viewed four candidates.

“We wanted to be absolutely certain that we chose the best person available, and I am confident that we have done that,” says Darrel Howell, chair of the board of governors, referencing Wainwright-Stewart’s more than 30 years of experience and demonstrated su c c ess at L akeland Colleg e, her passion for the college, and her perfor-

mance as interim president.

“Alice is a very proactive person and a collaborative leader. I believe that we will have many successful years ahead of us under her leadership,” says Howell.

Wainwright-Stewart was hired in the early 1980s as a sessional instructor at Lakeland College, teaching evening classes in the early childhood development program. In 1985 she became chair of the program. Within the next 10 years she became chair of three additional programs and then took on the dual role of dean and chair of human ser vices programs. In 1998 she created the School of Health and Human Services and guided its growth to ten programs.

Since 2005, Wainwright-Stewart has served as the vice president, academic.

Spring work and seeding has begun for the farmers. This leaves many farm ladies busy cooking, and some running meals out to the field. I have found stews and my slow cooker to be very useful this spring as I try to balance full-time work with farming responsibilities. Today I experimented with some pizza biscuits.

This recipe is for a baking powder biscuit with added cheese, pepperoni, onion and Italian seasoning. The pepperoni can be

substituted for ham or bacon. If you use ham, Ukrainian garlic sausage or bacon then the seasoning can be dill instead of the Italian seasoning. You could also omit the meat and just have cheese and onion as another variation.

They are great to have with a bowl of soup, a salad or to accompany a meal.

They can also be made into a sandwich to take to work or out on the tractor. They are wonderful, hot out of the oven with fresh butter melting into them. I really like how high these biscuits raise, and how nice the structure and texture is. This recipe calls for a very hot oven and a short cooking time, so be sure to keep a close eye on them, and check them at 9 minutes.

The 450 degree oven makes me a bit nervous, as there is not room for even a

one minute margin of error, so I am thinking of trying another batch at a lower temperature, such as 425 degrees and increasing the time slightly.

Pizza Biscuits 2 cups of flour 4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/4 cup cold butter 1/2 cup chopped pepperoni or ham 1/2 cup chopped onion 3/4 cup grated aged cheddar cheese 2/3 cup milk or light cream 1 egg Mix the flour, baking powder, sea salt, pepper and seasoning together in a bowl.

Add the cold butter and mix first with a fork,

and then continue to crumble the butter into the flour with your hands, work quickly, to prevent the butter from warming up from the heat in your hands. Stir in the chopped meat, onion and grated cheese. In a separate small bowl combine the milk and the egg, whisk well with a fork. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture and mix until dough is formed. Do not over mix as this will toughen the biscuits. Using your hands combine the last bit of dry mixture into the dough and turn out onto a surface for rolling.

Roll to a thickness of 3/4” and cut out with a round cookie cutter that is approximately 2 3/4” in diameter, makes 11 biscuits. Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Myrnam Pond Hockey

Another great season came to an end on March 25, 2015 at our wind up party for Myrnam Pond Hockey. Approximately 25 children participated on Wednesday nights from December 10, 2014 to March 25, 2015. Ages ranged from 7 years to 16 years. Our coaches were Dennis Machney, Derek Myshaniuk, Devon Fedoriuk and John Fedoriuk. We went to two tournaments: one in Mallaig and one in Elk Point. In addition, we had exhibition games against Mallaig, Two Hills and Elk Point during the season.

We would like to thank Jerome Watson and Rodney Godziuk from Kalyna Korner and Derek Myshaniuk for their cash donations to our Myrnam Pond Hockey Club.

We were able to purchase another set of goalie equipment for our younger children.

Community Closet “Gives Back” $24,550 To Vermilion

The Community Closet Society of Vermilion handed representatives from six different organizations cheques totalling $24,550 to be put toward their various ongoing projects in Vermilion.

The Town of Vermilion received $50 for fireworks; the Vermilion Senior Centre received $2,000 for upgrading the Centre’s sound system and renovations to the entranceway; the Lacrosse Club of Vermilion received $1,000 that will be put toward equipment; Kiddies Oasis

received $500 that will go toward a new indoor play structure; and COPS received $1,000 for gas for vehicles and supplies.

A second cheque presentation for $20,000 was accepted on behalf of the Friends of Vermilion Healthcare’s Urology Department. Acute Healthcare Manager, Barb Snelgrove said the donation will “put them at the top” of their fundraising drive.

The Third Annual Youth Mental Health Art Gala

Mental Health Awareness Week was celebrated by VIBE with a Youth Mental Health Art Gala at the Regional Centre on May 5, for the third year running.

This year’s contest had 189 pieces of art entered, up from 174 last year, and they were all on display during the Gala.

The top art winners were up for bid. All the proceeds will go toward next year’s prizes for the student participants. A grand total

of 282 people signed the guest book.

“We thought it was a great evening.

Wonderful support from the community to celebrate mental health awareness week,” said VIBE Coordinator, Pat Calyniuk.

Artists from Vermilion, Clandonald, Mannville, Paradise Valley, Marwayne and Kitscoty were all represented at the Gala.

Regional 4-H Sheep Hands-On Workshop

The Regional 4-H Sheep Workshop hosted by the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club took place Sunday, May 3 at the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Barn.

Fif t y-t wo young 4-H par ticipants turned out in force to work on their sheep projects. Clubs included St. Paul Multi- Club, the Vermilion 4 -H Sheep Club, Elk Point Multi - Club, Boscombe 4 - H Multi- Club and the Chipman 4-H Beef Club.

Sunday was an interactive handson workshop designed to give tips on how to care for their project at home and on achievement day. Sheep and supplies were brought in for demonstrations.

Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club Leader Deanna Krys said, “It’s really great to watch the children take an interest. We encourage them to be more hands on with their own sheep. Some of our 4-H members are working on the Market Lamb Project; this means they have to own a market lamb 60 days before the sale date.”

Leader Kr ys, who is also on the Provincial 4-H Sheep Advisor y Commit tee, said the 4-H members each pick out their own lamb, raise it and get it ready for show. “ They also show the lamb them-

selves. We also have some members that will be working with ewe lamb, yearling ewe, mature ewe and flock projec ts. The 4 - H also raises and lamb out their ewes.”

Parent D’Arcy Evans from Elk Point said, “One of the great projects we are running is where children from the town have the opportunity to own and look after a lamb on a nearby farm.

The 4-H members do not come from farming backgrounds but they have the o p p or tunit y to ex per ien c e the farming lifestyle and be involved.”

Evans added, “My daughter Morgan is really dedicated to taking care of her lamb. We live 5 km away from the farm where my daughter has her lamb. It’s the same as if we lived on the farm.

She goes to the farm every night to water and feed her sheep.”

Classes and workshops covered topics about sheep project tips includi n g c h o o s i n g a l a m b, fe e d i n g t h e lamb, shelter, showmanship, judging and how to construct a hanging sheep feeder for a fence. Instructions were given by Blair Dow and Travis Dow from the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club. Afterwards the four feeders constructed at the workshop were raffled off as door prizes to four lucky participants.

The trimming and grooming tips were given by Kaylie Krys and Megan Krys of the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club.

Starke Holds New Alberta Government

For the first time in 44 years Albertans took to the polls and changed political history. Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Richard Starke was one of the few Progressive Conservative candidates to hold on to a seat. Starke will be embarking on his second term.

The final count stood at 5,935 for Starke, 4,178 for Hozack, and 2,426 for NDP candidate Saba Mossagizi. Starke will now be on the other side of the floor in Edmonton.

Starke thanked his volunteers who worked on the campaign with him and said he was humbled by the success. He also acknowledged the defeat that had been inflicted on his party.

“Going into an election, you never really know what is going to happen,” said Starke on Newcap television on election night.

“We had control only on what happened here in Vermilion-Lloydminster. An election is really 87 small races, and I said in this race you have to do everything you can do to secure this seat, and hope that 86 other candidates are able to do the same. Clearly, others in our team were not as successful, and there are a wide variety of reasons why that happens.”

Runner up Danny Hozack reflected on the Wildrose campaign.

“We have gone through our post-election analysis. It was very close. I called Richard Starke and wished him well. We got fewer votes than we did in the last election; we thought we would have done better because we talked to so many people. A lot of people we talked to said ‘why would we trust you when all your party did was merge with the PCs.’ I tried to make them understand that there was nothing we could do to stop the 11 members leaving our party but there was something the PCs could have done to stop them coming over.

I think at the end of the day a lot of people blamed us for that and that is what hurt us most,” said Hozack.

“Rachel Notley seems like a lovely lady but I think she would be mistaken if she assumed that everybody who voted wants NDP policies. I think Alberta was yearning for change. NDP was the alternative choice to a tired old PC party.”

Hozack said he also thinks only time will tell what Notley plans to do.

“The fear I have for working people is that the oil industry is likely to be cautious for the next period of time to see if she is being moderate. A year is not a long time in the life of Shell oil but it is a long time in the life of a young unemployed oil field worker.”

Vermilion Town Clean-Up The Vermilion Army Cadets were out in force picking up garbage as part of ‘Town Clean-Up Week’ from May 4-9. Many community groups joined forces and helped to gather the garbage left behind from winter now that the warmer weather has arrived. In the last two weeks of April, Grade 4 students were fortunate to have two wonderful presentations – one from CAP (Classroom Agriculture Program) and one from Atco. We thank the presenters who brought these to our school. Both were thoroughly enjoyed by the students.

May 1 saw the VES gym brimming over with excitement as the students got to show off their musical abilities at the Spring Concert. We want to thank Ms. King and Miss Leggette for leading the students in song, as well as our audience members for taking time out of their busy day to join us.

Almost 60 Grade 10 students attended the Bi-Provincial Try-A-Trade event in Lloydminster on May 6. Students got a sneak peek at over 50 trades and industries. They got to participate in short, hands-on simulations of the workplace building, creating, and trying various tasks. Employers and workers in the workforce were also asked questions about economic issues, education requirements, job duties, and employment opportunities.

April Explosion of Colours was the buzz for the end of the month. Elementary students and their Minecraft teams were challenged to show off their skills with everything from balloons to ping pong balls to Fruit Loops to Lego to target games to marshmallow fun. They enjoyed creative Minecraft banners and Rice Krispies snacks and the final post-it note challenge was loads of fun! It is so rewarding to see how much teamwork and leadership that our students show.

We should all be proud of our children, and remember to encourage them to PAWS for PRIDE and do their best. That’s all that we ask of them!

On Tuesday, it was outside to help clean up our small community as everyone participated in Pitch In Day. Wednesday our Grade 10 students attended Try A Trade in Lloydminster while everyone at the school wore their hats in support of ‘Hats On For Mental Health’. Thursday, D.E.A.R., Drop Everything And Read, a favourite with the students. Friday finished off with a Formal Dress-Up Day and our Grade12 Spring Exercises.

Grade 10 student, Kenzie Smith, won gold at the BTPS Districts Badminton Tournament earning her a spot at the NEASAA Badminton Zones in Lloydminster on April 22.

At the Zones, Kenzie worked very hard throughout every match and received the silver medal and this gave her the opportunity to compete with the best badminton

players from around the province at the Provincial Competition on May 1 in Lloydminster. She was in a tough pool of four and only won the one match. Great job in achieving and competing at the provincial level, watch for her next year!

Lakeland College hosted the regional skills competition for high school students on Friday, April 24. This opportunity shined the spotlight on trades careers and capabilities of students from the Lakeland Region. Our school had Braden Mytz attending in the carpentry competition. There were eight students competing in this category and their project was to build a bench. Starting with interpreting the dimensions and angles from a set of blueprints, they had to complete the project with a limited supply of lumber and time.

Poutine day was a fundraiser to help re-stock the Home Ec. kitchens! As part of the current module Grade 11 and 12 students are working on they had to prepare food for a special day for a big group of kids! So, with a little coercion from staff and students they were convinced to throw a poutine Friday which was a huge hit with over 115 orders!

The Information Technology Department at Lakeland College is responsible for providing related technology services and resources for our Vermilion and Lloydminster campuses. We support and facilitate the technology needed to enhance the learning experience for our users.

Reporting to the IT Operations Manager the successful Computer Network Technician II will be responsible for implementation, monitoring and analysis of the wired and wireless network. It Could Happen To You - Don’t Text And Drive!

Last week another ‘It Can’t Happen To Me’ Risk Awareness Evaluation for ‘Social Responsibility and Impact of Actions’ Day took place for the students from J.R. Robson school at the Vermilion Emergency Training Center on Thursday, May 7.

The focus was on the consequences of texting and driving. Vermilion Fire Department, the Prairie EMS ambulance services, Lakeland Funeral Home and the Vermilion RCMP together with student role players acted out the mock scene for J.R. Robson students to observe the reality of what can happen in reckless texting and driving situations.

Prairie EMS Operations Supervisor Rob Snow described the scene to the students as it unfolded. Two cars had collided with ‘two victims’ of the crash laid out at the scene with one critical and the other deceased .

The driver of the car was arrested for texting and driving.

“We only focus on the survivors that have a chance,” Snow told students as he described how serious the harsh reality and consequences of drug use, drinking and texting while driving can be.

Vermilion RCMP Constable Stringer said, “The fine for distracted driving is $287 as of May 1, 2015.”

There were 25,913 convictions for distracted driving in Alberta last year.

Tex ting while driving has recently outnumbered drinking while driving as the number one cause of road traffic accidents.

The fake blood and make-up brought the reality of road accidents to life as the students observed the mock scene as the Lakeland Funeral Home removed “the body.”.

Candice Traber-Andersen from the Lakeland Funeral Home gave a presentation to the students.

“In this world, death is final. Let that word resonate with you. Final. This is not a circumstance we can change.”

Traber-Andersen knows the reality of road traffic accidents better than anyone.

“As a funeral director and embalmer, I have seen almost any type of death that you can imagine. I have been to the scene of murders, suicides, motor vehicle accidents, overdoses, and drownings.”

Traber-Andersen told students so many of those situations were preventable.

“But each person naturally has it instilled in them, ‘It Can’t Happen To Me…’ until it does happen to you. And then there is nothing that can be done to change that. And then after that, the only question left remaining is Why?”

Mind, Body And Spirit Covered At Women’s Conference

Three speakers from outside of Vermilion made presentations to 135 attendees at this year’s Women’s Conference and Trade Show sponsored by the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce, Lakeland College, Community Futures and TD Canada Trust.

“It’s nice to pull the community together and have some professional training from the outside come here,” said Planning Committee member Theresa Berg.

Each speaker had a different focus, however, all agreed on one issue.

“We (women) need to set a day aside for ourselves,” said Berg. “We always seem to put ourselves last.”

Jackie Yurko, a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine whose key area of interest is women’s health, stated the role of

Louise Taylor, who operates a home-based business through Signature Homestyles from Melfort Saskatchewan, said she was at the conference last year and “enjoyed it so much she started looking for it in the fall.”

“Vendors make it possible to do a charity of choice,” said Berg. “Vendors offer prizes to be raffled and all the proceeds go directly to the charity. This year it is the Walking Through Grief Society.”

Walking Through Grief Society’s Vermilion facilitator, Lynda Moses, was on hand to explain their mandate to support people through the grieving process.

“It can be difficult to change our level of stress,” said Yurko during her presentation. “So it is best to work on our response to stress.”

Yurko suggests integrating stress-relief techniques throughout the day like focusing on your breathing, meditation, journaling, visualization and prayer, for at least five minutes a day.

The Vermilion Voice | May 11, 2015 Library Book Sale Library Manager Stuart Pauls displays two donated illustrated books that were up for bid in a silent auction during the library book sale. Books that otherwise would end up in the landfill get “one more turn at being read,” said Pauls. There was a 45 per cent increase in traffic during the first two days of the sale. According to the Library’s 2014 Annual Report 69 people visited the library per day. The first two days of the sale saw that number rise to 100 visitors per day. The sale is a great opportunity to “liberate some space and reduce our collection,” said Pauls. Vermilion is a book loving town.” The book sale made $550 on day one alone, and was on target to meet or exceed last year’s sales of between $800 to $900.
