Another successful dance season came to an end for the Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association’s Samotsvit Dancers on May 2, at Lakeland College’s Alumni Theatre. A total of 21 dances were performed by six groups representing the various regions of the Ukraine. Each dance’s style is influenced by the region it represents said host Daryl Swanson. After completion of the program, certificates and flowers were handed out to the dancers by their respective teachers.

Mock Crash Scene Drives Home Harsh Reality For Students

The annual ‘It Can’t Happen To Me’ Risk Awareness Evaluation brought the schools of Innisfree and Mannville together to participate in the ‘Social Responsibility and Impact of Actions’ day at the Mannville High School on Wednesday, April 29.

“Today is about teaching the students to make the right choices to stay alive,” said Prairie EMS Operations Supervisor Rob Snow. “ The students see fir sthand the harsh reality of what can happen in reckless driving situations.”

Junior Cadet, Olivia Anderson from the Mannville Volunteer Fire Department who acted as a role player at the mock scene and said, “I’ve learned a ton about how to handle emergency situations. We learn skills for life and how to work together with the team.”

“If you ever have to call 911, try to be as detailed as you can be. I know this weekend is graduation and it is unfortunately one of our busiest times of year. I do not want to get called out to the scene of a crash like this one!” said Mannville Fire Department training officer and teacher Zane Polishuk. “ Tex t i n g w h i l e d r i v i n g h a s n ow

outnumbered drinking while driving as the number one cause of road traffic accidents,” added Polishuk.

A c ar placed sideways bet ween two trees had one role player trapped in the car. Fake blood and make-up were used to bring the scenario to life.

Students observed the mock scene in the school playground.

Mannville Fire Department were first to arrive at the scene followed by the Prairie EMS ambulance services and the RCMP. All three emergency departments responded quickly to the mock dispatch call.

T h ey d i d t h e ir b e s t to s ave t h e “ victims” at the scene; as the Fire Department cut the trapped victim from the car, the injured were transported to the ambulances and “the dead body” which lay motionless, was covered with a blanket and taken away by the Lakeland Funeral Home. The mock scene brought students face-to -face with the harsh reality and consequences of drug use, drinking and driving and texting while driving.

“If students are provided with the correct information and a demonstration of the consequences of taking risks, they are more likely to make responsible choices,” said Polishuk.

At 3:55 am on April 19th, 2015, Vermilion RCMP members were conducting patrols in the 4900 block of 50th Street in Vermilion, Alberta when a vehicle was observed to be not in compliance with the Vehicle

Drug Seizure Equipment Regulations. A traffic stop was initiated and members observed drug residue in plain view in the front seat area of the vehicle. The male driver and female passenger were arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Further investigation revealed an additional quantity of cocaine in individual packaging inside the vehicle.

Samantha Alana DAVIDSON (19) and Lucas Anthony BARDOEL (18) both of Vermilion, Alberta have been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking.

Drug Seizure During a patrol of the Vermilion Provincial Park at approximately 1:18 am on May 1st, 2015, Vermilion RCMP members located a vehicle in an area of the park closed to the public at night. A traffic stop was initiated during which drug residue was observed in plain view within the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The three male occupants were arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Subsequent investigation revealed a quantity of cocaine in individual packaging along with a machete and a collapsible baton similar

to those used by police.

Rawson James FRANKE of Dewberry, Alberta has been charged with one count of Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking and two counts of Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public Peace.

As the sale and distribution of illegal drugs is a concern for all communities, cooperation from the community is important and Vermilion RCMP would like to encourage anyone with knowledge of these illegal activities to notify their local RCMP Detachment or Crimestoppers.

Hit and Run Collision On Saturday, April 25th at approximately 10:00 P.M., the Kitscoty RCMP was dispatched to a hit and run collision on 48 Avenue in Kitscoty, Alberta. The suspect vehicle was travelling West on 48 Avenue at a high rate of speed and hit the rear of the complainant’s vehicle and continued on west bound. The complainant followed

the suspect who then turned around and almost hit the complainant head on again.

The suspect fled the scene west bound at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle is described as an older model Chevrolet or GMC truck, black in color with no licence plate on it. There were two young male occupants inside of the suspect vehicle.

The suspect vehicle will have damage to the front driver’s corner of the vehicle.

The Innisfree Delnorte 2015 Grade 12 class held their graduation celebrations on Friday, May 1 at the Innisfree Recreation Centre. The three young ladies who looked like movie stars attending a red carpet event graced the stage along with the four young gentlemen who were also dressed to impress.

The students listened attentively to

speeches and well wishes from dignitaries such as Mrs. Alice McLaughlin who presented the Message from the Board of Education, Mr. Bob Allen, Message from the Superintendent’s Office, and Ms. Celeste Matovich who delivered the Principal’s message. The Valendictorian speech delivered by Miss Cyena Chadney and immediately following the ceremonies the graduates returned to the hall for their graduation dances.

If our mothers did not go through the months of pregnancy and trials of labour we would not exist.

Mother’s Day is the day to honour the mothers of the world for all they do. A mother is a nurturer, doctor, protector and a leader in our lives.

When we are babies our mothers become our provider; she feeds us, and provides for our emotional and physical needs. She kisses and treats our booboos when we got hurt and would die if needed to protect us from harm.

As we grow older and enter our preteen and teenage years, she becomes our psychiatrist and our mentor.

When I was in my preteen and teenage years my mother was my best friend, even though I had many friends I could talk with.

My mom was always the one person I could tell anything to. Many nights after I became old enough to drink alcohol I would come home after a night out with my friends, probably a little tipsy, maybe even a lot tipsy, and

Happy Mother’s Day crawl in bed with my mom and proceed to tell her everything I did that night; the good and the bad and sometimes the ugly. She would listen without judgement and often giggled at the things I would tell her in my tipsy state. She often gave her opinion on some of the things I told her, but never once did she love me any less.

As I became an adult and moved on in my own life, my mom and I have remained best friends and to this day I may do things she still does not always agree with but there is still no judgement; just a loving smile and wise words of advice, (which I may or may not always listen to.)

Being a mother of two great children I have always tried to bring forth my mom’s wisdom, and her caring and understanding ways into my children’s lives. I do my best to listen, to pass on my words of wisdom when they need it, and most importantly make them feel as though they can tell me anything without fearing the consequence of being judged.

The first time I really had to experience what it was like to worry about your child and feel the empty nest syndrome was when my son travelled back to Newfoundland to visit his cousins. He was 19 years

old but to me it felt like sending a young boy out into the wild blue yonder.

I called and texted him every day to make sure things were ok and to tell him that I loved and missed him. He was gone only a couple of weeks at most, but it seemed to me like an eternity. The day he flew back to Edmonton, I was eagerly awaiting the time to come to leave Vermilion to pick him up at the airport. His dad and sister travelled with me and I nearly drove them both nuts worrying we would be late getting to the airport.

Once there, I stood anxiously staring at the screen waiting for it to say his flight had landed. Trying to contain my excitement and not completely embarrass my family, I was trying to hold back the tears of happiness.

Standing with my phone in my hand I was going to video him coming through the arrival gate. Well, let’s just say that didn’t end the way I had hoped. When I saw him come through the gate the video recording lasted all of five seconds as I became a bumbling fool racing toward him with tears flowing like a 2- year old. All you can hear on the video is a high pitch voice saying He’s home, my boy is home over and over!

Mothers are generous, loving and thoughtful, They hold us and love us, protecting all the while, Wiping our tears as they give us their smile.

They watch us grow up, and make all the mistakes, That they taught us to omit from the lives we partake.

Yet their love constantly grows, and never afraid to be shown, Even when we say goodbye, and start lives of our own.

Our lives may go in opposite’s, though you’ve taught us everything we know, But remember we always love you, even when it does not show!

As how could we forget, the woman that was always there, Who never once faltered; no love would she spare.

From the womb to the door, and all points in between, You’ve watched over us always, even sometimes unseen.

We’re indebted to you always, yet so little we repay, But how do we give back to our mother

named Fay? I will do my very best, to give back what I’ve borrowed, Everything I do will be honest; I don’t want to burden with sorrow.

For the one person who matters, whose respect I’ll always cherish, Is that of my mother’s; my love for her shall never perish!

I can only hope that this will be enough; to be a good person, husband and man, To let the world know, that my mother made me who I am.

I am pretty sure I embarrassed the life out of him but at that point I didn’t really care. I was just so happy to have him back here with me.

A parent’s job never ends until the day we no longer exist here on earth, especially for a mother. As a mother I completely understand what my mom would say to me when she worried about me, “When you are a mother yourself, you will understand,” and now I find myself saying the exact same thing to my children, no matter how old they are, a mother will always worry and want the best for her child.

For so many reasons, Mother’s Day is a time to pay tribute to all moms in the world, for all their love and dedication. For your mom you may chose to show it with flowers, cards or a nice dinner out or maybe all three, but as a mom myself the greatest gift I could receive on Mother’s Day doesn’t cost any money; a simple smile, a hug from my children and a I love you is all I really need or want! I think that is all any mom really wants.

The Vermilion Voice would like to wish all the Mothers everywhere a very Happy Mother’s Day.

My mother, I do love you, always and forever, For everything you have given me, I shall always treasure.

From times in my boyhood, to just the other day, You have always been there, with the thoughtful words you have to say.

If there were ever a person, one I knew I could turn to, It would be my best friend… mother I would turn to you!

Well Folks, I sure didn’t like waking up to that white surprise this past Saturd ay morning. I had about 12 things on my list for the day that I all wiped off the to-do list.

So I just putted and moped around the shop and did a few “honey do’s”… and hey…it wasn’t me, I still had the snow plough on the quad. I was using the blade to push the gravel back onto the driveway once it had all melted.

Sunday was a nicer day and t h e w h i te s t u f f m e l te d q u i c k l y a s suspected, all except for in the shadows. It left some needed moisture in its wake, so it wasn’t all bad.

According to my logs the earliest full bloom green leaves on the poplar trees along the Battle River was been May 1; a year when we had an early spring. This spring has broken records so the moisture may assist in breaking even more.

Already a green explosion hit the trees yesterday, April 27th. The leaf buds broke out the green and with a little more sunlight they will be in full bloom quickly. However, a few cooler days could stunt that explosion.

That plus 25C above will do wonders

for our green explosion that is ver y near; it was so nice out that I put the screens in the screen doors instead of the winter windows.

O f course Miss Pickles, my pup used to knocking on door by slapped the glass near the door handle as the door opens outward instead of inward like on the shop or our back door, that she casually opens at will.

Comes running up the step jumping up for the slap all in one motion… sending her into a summersault with screen and cats scattering in all directions, hey…she is just a pup and has never seen these new-fangled screen thingy’s.

Yard work is endless, of course. It is nice outdoors but it really isn’t a great adventure and ever y thing reminds me of getting out doing other things: a worm in the garden, should be out fishing; Miss Pickles walks by with her chew antlers, should be out looking for shed deer antlers in all my favorite bowhunting spots; sunlight sparkles off gravel in driveway, should be out panning gold on new ground of the river spring thaw.

Or get out my new metal detector and find all kinds of interesting things.

Walk by the quad that the utility trailer i s h i tc h e d u p to fo r a l l my r a k i n g debris, should be taking Miss Pickles out for a good run; a hawk screams

overhead high in the blue sky…this instantly floods the mind…I’m excited for this Friday. I am rising well before the sunrise at around 3:30 in the a.m. and heading out for an adventure.

I’m heading out to the “Lek” or dancing grounds to watch the “Sharptail Strut” as the sun rises; male Sharptail grouse will dance and strut their hearts out in annual spring shenanigans that amaze anyone watching.

The Sharptail grouse found on the prairies are dwindling by the numbers the last several years in our area.

They are a large grouse with a tail that comes to a sharp point…hence the name.

Every spring the males will gather at a “Lek” which is a dancing ground they may use every year for decades.

It’s amazing to watch as 10-20 males all with their own couple square foot spot in this Lek strut their stuff.

Some Leks have had been recorded with up to 45 males dancing. Only a couple of females show up to watch, and only a couple males will be picked to mate…so the show is ON!!!!

I’m pretty excited about that, I will try to get some action pictures, Since we are the topic of fascinating birds, one of my favourite birds of prey, the Peregrine Falcon, have their very own reality show.

The U of A in Edmonton has a nesting site high on their facility, a program

sponsored by Alberta Conser vation Association, suppor ted by Hunting and fishing licences in Alberta.

There is a 24 hr live feed of “Radisson” the momma Peregrine, her mate “Chase” and the lil’ ones to be. There are two other nesting sites in Edmonton such as on the Bell tower.

Last year the pair had four snowball woolly chicks and this year Radisson laid her first egg yesterday, April 28th and will lay another egg ever y other day up to five eggs. So, the next couple of weeks will be interesting to watch.

But that is great, I really enjoy the outdoor adventures regardless if I am dreaming about them, remembering them or living them.

When the Smoke Clears Sometimes just being outdoors doing chores is enough adventure…if all your outdoor adventure memories are always made fond!!!

Sharing The Care: Promoting Children’s Mental Health Jodi Simmonds Submitted

May 3 – 9 marks Children’s Mental Health Week across Canada. Here in Vermilion, VIBE will be hosting the 3 rd Annual Youth Mental health Art Gala on May 5 at the Vermilion Regional Centre from 6:30 – 8:30. This event is completely free to all ages and is highlighting the amazing artwork submitted by children from Vermilion, Mannville, Clandonald, Kitscoty, Paradise Valley, and Marwayne. Entries were designed to fit this year’s theme of mental health or mental illness. There will be free desserts and fun art related activities for children. This year’s winners will be announced at the Gala and winning entries from last year and this year will be auctioned off in a silent auction.

VIBE will also be promoting the awareness of mental health and reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness

by encouraging students and staff in local schools to participate in Hats On For Mental Health on May 7. Wear a hat and show others that you care and that you agree that by talking about our mental health, we can encourage those in need to speak out and seek help.

This year, organizers of Hats on For Mental Health, Family Smart (www. familysmart.ca/may-7th), are encouraging everyone to think about the role that they play in suppor ting mental health in youth. Building on the theme of previous years, “I Care About You”, t h i s ye ar ’s t h e m e i s “ S h ar i n g t h e Care.” We all play a role in supporting children’s mental health in our community. Clearly parents, grandparents, ex tended family, teachers and other school staff, and supporting children’s agencies support our children ever y day. Each time you let a child know that you care about them, each time you give them the gift

of your time, each time you listen to them without judgment, each time you let them know that they matter you are helping to reinforce their positive mental health. If you are not currently directly involved with children, you can find ways to build mental health in children and youth in your community. Consider volunteering at a local school in the hot lunch program or as a reader, check out opportunities to volunteer as a coach, consider teaching a children’s class and share your skills. Any opportunity for an adult to positively connect with children and youth in our region goes a long way in suppor ting their self-esteem and self-image. Back in the day that most of the work on the farm was conducted outdoors without the benefit of a cab or any other shelter, we worked and travelled in the cold burning wind in the winter and had the open air privilege of being exposed to the equally burning sun, most country people had a tanned face and neck, so distinguished from a town business person who spent most of his time indoors.

I think the idea was if you had any smarts you’d likely find a way to avail yourself of the easier, less strenuous way of life, and of course I guess some had the idea that, “Rednecks” couldn’t really handle that cushy indoor status. “Hmm!!” So anyway I think most of us country folk when we think of the life of traffic jams and dealing with public on a daily basis would sooner take the rigors of the independent country life.

I’ve often said I wouldn’t like the city if you loaded a bundle rack to capacity with thousand dollar bills for the privilege.

Money doesn’t necessarily bring happiness remember!! You know that the years of being out in the country, faced with the problems of making a living while challenging all the perils of living off the land, you are made to realize the chances of adversity taking away your livelihood in so many different ways and the experience sets us apart, I feel. Mediocre doesn’t cut it out there, but you can hide yourself in the city seems like and get by. Losing a job is bad but losing your farm with your roots attached is so much more drastic!! I so well remember my first city job, working for the city of Wetaskiwin doing all manners of jobs that seemed like no great deal at all.

At coffee in the shop one day, an old

timer with about twenty years at the job asked “How do you like working for a living for a change?” Well he knew I’d been farming before so I said, “Hell I thought this was like a holiday with pay.” I honestly was told after about a week that I should slow down a bit as I was showing the old boys up a bit. That’s the truth, I never ever got past that. I was only there a short time and I’d already been made a foreman, yeah us, “Rednecks” can’t cut it. As this was my first go around after farming I was surprised that in a short time I was put on call to handle any emergency that came up on weekends and holidays and had to carry a pager so I was on duty 24/7 at times. The only problem I had was I had seven different levels of bosses telling me that I wasn’t to make any decisions and only do as I was told. I soon longed for the time I could stand on my own and after about two years I gave my notice.

I came to believe any job that didn’t require

any input on my part, wasn’t for me.

In the country life you were required to make decisions on a daily basis that could have far reaching consequences and cost you dearly and suddenly you had to ask if you could service a piece of equipment without express order to do it first. Not for this cowboy.

All farmers must make decisions on times of planting, spraying, or harvesting.

You used your experience to help you or you asked someone you trusted to help you that was the way of us. You had to make the decisions and live with them. So I think we over time in this demanding country learned decision making the hard way and don’t like being told we’re a culture of “Rednecks, “ and aren’t capable of such planning, We’re just going along for the ride, and some intellect with a degree in agriculture should have to steer us along. I can see that going over like a lead balloon. This

country has a way of separating the wheat from the chaff and like wise men from the boys. I’m really glad my roots are in county and my values that came from the coping with all the adversity that with the territory.

My son works in an office in Edmonton and manages a computer business that insists on 100 per cent accuracy. He has a job making sure all the people with him take special care and as he is the only country boy on the team he gets the “Redneck” title and it upsets him. I tell him, “you know son, hold your head up high, and be proud, there aren’t a whole lot of us left anymore! We don’t fit in with the white collar crowd we’re a little to rowdy, and a little too loud. There’s no other place tho; that I’d rather be then with the “Rednecks.” White socks and Blue Ribbon beer. Yeah we do have our place and culture. Do love to sing that song, it fits the scene.

NOTICE OF ROADSIDE HERBICIDE APPLICATION

The program to control roadside vegetation in the County of Vermilion River will begin on about June 1st depending on growing conditions. This year we will be using a combination of truck-mounted sprayers for brush control and herbicide application mowers for roadside weed control.

The County recognizes that some land owners do NOT wish to have herbicides applied adjacent to their land. The County provides the option of entering into a No Spray Zone Agreement for those areas. This would result in the County avoiding herbicide applications in those areas with the understanding that the landowner would control weeds and brush within the No Spray Zone.

No Spray Zone Agreements are valid for the season in which they are issued and expire on Sept. 30th. If you would like to enter into an agreement or renew one that has expired, please contact the County Office at 780-846-2244. It’s time to vote. Are you excited?

With both a provincial and a federal election occurring in the same calendar year, Albertans are doubly challenged to decide how best to impact the future of our political landscape.

According to Elections Alberta, there are approximately 2.5 million eligible voters currently resident in this province.

In the 2012 election, according to the Canadian Press, just over 50% of eligible Alberta voters cast a vote.

What does it mean? Do we perceive ourselves too busy? Is it that we don’t think a single vote really makes any difference?

Is it because we’re convinced that politics is too complicated or that the concept of ‘democracy’ is only a facade for a system stuck on repeat, where the ‘meet the new boss, same as the old boss’ status quo will remain no matter what we think or do?

There seems always something to criticize when it comes to politics and government. Those we elect to manage our money and steer the big wheel of power slicing through our daily lives probably encounter more disgruntled faces and shaking fists than they do accolades and happy crowds chanting their names with gratitude. Politics is not a career choice for the easily discouraged.

Living in a democracy means we may express our views freely. Criticism has its place, but when it comes to voting, maybe scrutiny is more useful. It’s true that the call for a provincial election wasn’t expected so soon but even so, we’ve had time enough to study, to ask questions, and to find a few answers. We can certainly review the past.

And although we can’t predict the future, we can at least project the way we’d prefer that it unfold.

Every citizen aged 18 years or older is eligible to vote, to express our views about what issues matter to us most, and to select the candidate who will best represent us. That’s power. Unfortunately, if the past is any indicator of Alberta voter participation, many may again select apathy over action.

Is it indignation? Incredulity? Maybe it’s both, mixed with a kind of sadness. We’re a privileged citizenry in Canada, but I think it’s naive to take any kind of privilege for granted. Ever.

Why should everyone who’s eligible to vote do so? Because we can is the obvious answer. But there’s more to it than that.

A vote informs our politicians about us, their electorate. If a candidate is elected but by only a small margin, for example, the candidate understands that, while the electorate approves, their approval is moderate. In other words, while we granted a ‘win’, we didn’t gift a landslide victory. Perhaps the candidate will therefore tread soft and work toward gaining our trust. Elections involve so many things but certainly they are just as much about who didn’t win as who did. Maybe the candidate who doesn’t ‘win’ this time but gains reasonable support will be encouraged to persevere. Nothing changes overnight.

The way we vote registers publicly where we, the engaged electorate, stand. Every non-vote registers the apathy level of the electorate. To put it bluntly, apathy essentially relieves a successful candidate from giving a hoot, its message to the candidate being: do whatever you want because we don’t care and we’re certainly not going to hold you to account on anything you do whether for or against us. Government seems to function better in an arena that includes strong checks and balances than behind an opaque veil embroidered with the slogan: proceed without caution.

In the wider landscape, not bothering to vote leaves opportunity for extremists of all kinds----who are never apathetic and always vote----to have an undue impact on our collective future. Don’t care to have an opinion? There’s always someone willing to take advantage of your apathetic silence.

Exercising our privilege of the democratic right to vote is a personal thing. On voting day, each of us decides whether to count or to roll over and go back to sleep.

Do what suits you best. For what it’s worth, wild horses couldn’t keep me from voting in either one of the upcoming elections. I prefer to be part of the process rather than a dormant bystander.

When I make crepes I like to fill them with a variety of fruits, usually serving three different crepes on a single dessert plate garnished with whipped cream. Here are some ideas for fillings. Sliced banana or peaches with whipped cream is a perfect combination that is easy to make and tastes delicious. Peaches are not in season yet, but watermelon and cantaloupe are and they make a refreshing filling as well. You can also make a blueberry or Saskatoon filling.

The blueberry filling recipe is nice for a fresh blueberry taste, but if you prefer a sweeter dessert then increase the sugar to suit your taste. I garnish the blueberry crepes with whipped cream, but you could use some vanilla ice cream as well.

Blueberry Filling 1 1/2 cups blueberries 1/3 cup water 1 tablespoon sugar (white, brown or coconut) 1/4 cup water 1 tablespoon cornstarch In a small heavy bottomed pot bring the blueberries, 1/3 cup water and the sugar to a boil, and cook for several minutes. In a cup stir together the

Dawns Eats cornstarch and the 1/4 cup water until dissolved. Pour the cornstarch mixture, constantly stirring, into the blueberry mixture. Continue to cook for 1 minute or until thickened. Use this filling for blueberry crepes. (This recipe can be doubled) This crepe recipe is my favorite and it is from acclaimed French chef Julia Child. Crepes can be filled with sweet or savory fillings. Her recipe is always successful and so easy to make in a blender.

For desert crepes, fill with fruit or add freshly whipped cream that has been sweetened with a bit of sugar and flavoured with a teaspoon of vanilla.

Place the whipped cream and fruit or berries down the middle of the crepe.

Roll the crepe over the filling.

Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream and a piece of chosen fruit.

Additional fruits to use are nectarines, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, pineapple, oranges and kiwi. I also do a filling of sautéing 2 or 3 chopped apples in butter until softened, and then add one or two tablespoons of brown sugar and some cinnamon to taste.

The apple filling can be served warm circle. Cook about one minute or until or cooled, rolled in the middle of the slightly brown, flip and cook on the other crepe, garnished with whipped cream side about 5-10 seconds. and a sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of maple syrup.

As I write this I can’t stop thinking about a savory crepe filling that is made with hamburger, onions and curry and another made of creamy mushroom, TOURNAMENTS spinach and cheese. Those will have to be recipes for another day.

Garage Sale Blues Shannon O’ Connor Columnist

It’s hard to believe it was almost two years ago that I wrote my first article for the Vermilion Voice, “How I Survived the Mannville Town Yard Sale.”

I say sur vived because I have a penchant for over shopping, especially when it comes to finding vintage items.

Thankfully, due to the charm of the town of Mannville, I became more interested in its surroundings than I was in shopping, so I survived with my wallet intact and the article in the can.

I would like to say I fared as well at the 8th Annual Rotary Garage Sale that was held in Vermilion recently, but in fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

Once again, on assignment, I headed into dangerous waters. Now I have been to a great many yard sales, garage sales, auctions and flea markets, but nothing could have prepared me for the massive onslaught of bargain hunters that surged forward as the door to the Vermilion Heritage Pavilion went up, signalling the start of the sale.

This time there was nothing to distract me from making purchases - there was only STUFF. Glorious, overflowing, wonderful STUFF, stuffed in every nook and cranny.

People who were familiar with the previous year’s sale, started making beelines to their favourite aisles. I was left guessing which direction I should go in as there were so many people I couldn’t see what was on the tables until I got there.

By the time I found the toy section, someone was already rushing past me

with a box filled to the brim with vintage Barbie toys and other goodies that were still in their original boxes. So close and yet so far! I did manage to snap a picture of the lucky lady for the article.

(Which reminded me of why I was there.)

Yet, I continued shopping, and managed to find a few items that I immediately paid for and brought to my vehicle.

I took a deep breath before heading back in, and resolved to find my contact and finish the story.

I did manage to locate her, but she was quickly swallowed up by the mob of bargain hunters. I told her I would wait for her on the spot.

While nanoseconds turned into full blown seconds, I began to think it could be awhile until she returned, and so convinced myself that looking around a bit more couldn’t hurt.

Something shiny caught my eye and like a magpie I was drawn toward it. Before I knew it I was in the throes of shopping again, and shortly thereafter, I was heading to my vehicle with my new purchases.

But that only made me more determined to put this story to bed when I headed back into the Pavilion for the third time.

Although I couldn’t see my contact, I resolved to sit down in the furniture section, and wait for her there. As I sat on one couch, it occurred to me I was going to need some furniture. Yes “need” not “want.” So it was perfectly okay to peruse this section in a guilt free frame of mind.

A very vintage love-seat (probably from the mid 80’s) caught my eye. It was a bit ratty and would definitely need some work in the way of its upholstery, but I loved the tufted buttons and high back. I thought it had a very “Friends” feel to it, and I immediately imagined all my friends admiring my great eye for vintage furniture.

Two Rotarians were more than happy to move my so called “Friends” couch out of the Pavilion and into the van (perhaps a little too happy). I looked at the time. It was three hours and $100 past story time.

I resigned myself to the fact that I wasn’t going to get the article done that night. I had lost sight of my contact altogether.

As I drove away from the 8th annual Rotary Garage Sale with a couch sticking out of the back end of my vehicle, it occurred to me the life of a reporter isn’t easy.

It looked like I was going to have to get this story another day.

As luck would have it, it was a three day garage sale so...it seemed I would have to return on day two and three, if necessary; whatever it took to get the story was a sacrifice I was willing to make. It’s all just part of the garage sale blues.

I found a terrific piece of vintage Vermilion history; a milk glass mug of one of Vemilion’s flagship stores: Craigs Department store from 1985. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Lakeland’s Student Managed Farm Celebrates 25 Years Submitted

Faba beans were the wonder crop last year. “It was a strange thing, I had never seen them grow in the field,” says Peter Walsh, with a laugh. “It was a whole new learning experience for me.”

As an instructor in agricultural sciences, Walsh has been sharing learning opportunities like the faba bean crop with students thanks to the college’s Student Managed Farm (SMF) – Powered by New Holland.

The SMF provides animal sciences and crop technology students at the Vermilion campus with the real-world experience of operating and managing a multi-million dollar agriculture business.

Planting the Seed The SMF started on the crop side 25 years ago. Since then, crop technology students have made decisions about what to grow and where, fertilizer and herbicide applications, as well as harvesting and selling their crop.

“The idea that we can take everything we are learning in the classroom – all the theory we are giving students – and apply it, put it into practice and make it functional, that is ultimately what the SMF is about,” says Walsh. “It really fits with our ‘learn by doing’ philosophy at Lakeland.”

The seed for Lakeland’s very own SMF was planted on an Ag Tour Club trip in the late 1980s. At that time the club would load students on a 15-passenger van to visit feedlots and manufacturers.

“We bucked out at the end of the semester for 10 days or so,” says Walsh, seated at his desk in the Mead Building. On one such trip, past instructor Rob Jordan took students south of the border to Nebraska and Iowa where they discovered the student managed farm concept.

The concept took root at Lakeland over the course of a few years before students were able to put production in the ground in the spring of 1990. John Robinson, Mel Mathison, Rob Baron, Bob Brad and Robert McFadzean were the “kingpins” of the SMF in its infancy, says Walsh who was completing his masters during the SMF’s first field year. Allan Forbes, Doug Livingstone and Josie Van Lent were also instrumental as the advisory group to the SMF inception.

“It was the thought that the students would actually be running a company and that it happened to be a grain farm really struck a note with all of us. We thought this was something that would really distinguish our program. Nobody else was doing it,” he says.

Lakeland’s SMF started with 500 acres, including three rented quarters west of Vermilion. Twenty students were enrolled in the crop technology program at the time, however, only the second-years were responsible for running the SMF which is still the case today.

“Nine or 10 students started working on it,” says Walsh, thumbing through the log book. “The first-years get a taste of it but the bulk of the operation of the company is done by second-year students.”

Taking root Crop technology students are now responsible for around 1,000 acres. For the 2014-2015 academic year, there are 35 firstyear and 31 second-year crop technology students. Crop tech SMF general manager, Nathan Glassford, will graduate this year and like all second-years involved with the SMF, he won’t harvest what he’s planted.

Next year’s second-year students will complete harvest and honour the contracts Glassford’s team signed.

“The SMF is a good way to get hands-on knowledge. It takes all of us as a team to get things done,” he says. “You get to plan out what you are going to spray, what you are going to seed and how you are going to market your grain. You get to work with the public, go to a lot of meetings with producers and the industry committees. Overall, it’s a really good experience to increase your knowledge of the agricultural industry. You get out of it what you put into it.”

Glassford enrolled at Lakeland after working in the oilfield for several years.

Working on the SMF has been like returning to his roots. “We had a family farm but we sold out. I wanted to get back into agriculture and I saw this as an opportunity I wanted to go for,” he says. With his SMF experience, Glassford’s next step in agriculture will see him in Leader, Sask. working in management with G-MAC’s AgTeam.

Lakeland’s SMF is a powerful learning tool and sometimes the best lessons are from mistakes and having to adapt, according to Rob Baron who was the harvest coach for 21 SMF harvests.

“I remember in 2002 when we had no crop to harvest due to a severe drought.

That year we didn’t learn much about combining, but we did learn a lot about crop insurance,” says Baron, who is now the head of the renewable energy and conservation program and is involved with the SMF research team. “I find the students take great ownership and pride in the SMF. They truly do treat it as if it was their own money.”

Describing the SMF students he’s worked with as peers, Baron says a strong bond is developed between the students and instructors as they work together to manage the farm. “These students are my future colleagues and friends,” he says. “I always started my first lecture of first year with a ‘welcome to the profession’ speech.

Growing strong In its 25 years in operation, the SMF program has evolved with the agriculture industry. Where there were only three teams at first – productions, operations and finance – today the SMF teams include productions, operations, finance, marketing, research and PR, and each have their own advisor. Students apply for the various

teams and jobs that they would like in the company starting in the summer.

“Instead of classes, students run meetings, which are for information exchange and decision making processes. They coordinate with other teams and develop a number of soft skills like conflict resolution, communication, interpersonal skills and collaboration,” says Walsh. Five years ago, Lakeland expanded the SMF to the livestock side. Today there are commercial beef, dairy, purebred beef and sheep-unit student teams, and in the near future the SMF program will grow to include agribusiness. In total, the SMF offers 1,700 acres for students to Live the Learning.

“It’s a lot more sophisticated,” says Walsh. “They learn the tools of the industry and that’s what we try to instill in them. We are not training them for a job; we are training them for a career.”

In 2011, Lakeland and New Holland signed a 10-year agreement related to agricultural sciences programming and the SMF. New Holland consigns agricultural equipment to Lakeland on an annual rotating basis and established an endowment fund for student awards. Lakeland’s commitment to involve industry in the SMF earned the college silver Award of Excellence in the college-industry partnership category from the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics.

Signs of Spring – crocuses, pussy willows, tulips, robins, children riding their bikes, young mothers strolling their babies, some others anxious to plant their gardens - just a nice time of the year. We also have some Seniors with “itchy feet” needing to celebrate the nice weather by getting away on some bus trips. At the Seniors Centre the tulips are blooming and other perennials are welcoming spring.

Every spring, the Seniors Choir, the Happy Harmonizers put on their annual Spring Festival. On April 29, there were three different groups each with their own version of music. The Happy Harmonizers, the Touch of Brass and the “Sweet Harmonizers” were in attendance at 7:00 p.m. at the Seniors Centre. Entrance fees were either a silver collection or items for the Food Bank. Art Boggs, was Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

The Happy Harmonizers sang songs about “dancing and dances”, one of my favorites was “ Could I Have This Dance?”. There were fourteen members on stage led by Irene Smith. Glen Teasdale played the piano. The audience was given the opportunity to dance in the aisle if they so chose.

The “Touch of Brass” chose a Scottish theme for their handbell selections.

Eleven members were led by Janet McLennan who normally likes to play the handbells but Bonnie Bauer was away for the past few months. It was interesting to watch how everyone playing had to really concentrate on their part. The end result was very pleasing to the ear.

The “Sweet Harmonizers” were given their name by Art as they were a quartet with five members as well as the piano player, Karen King. They sang an Easter version of “Halleluiah” and a medley of

songs that could substitute for the normal answering machine phone message.

There was even a dog answering version where the dog howled a bit. They called the medley “after beebs”. The new stage and sound system was appreciated by all.

After the performance, the crowd enjoyed the nice lunch provided by the participants.

On May 7, at l:30 p.m. at the Seniors Centre, there will be another annual choir

get-to-gether with two other choirs, the Lloydminster Minstrals and the Mannville Melody Makers.Entrance fee $5.00.

Come spend a pleasurable afternoon.

On May 4, Birthday and Anniversary Cake and ice cream will be served at 10:30 a.m.

The Crib Doubles will be held on May 14 and the Potluck Supper the third week on May 20.

Parallel with the election, students at J. R. had an opportunity to speak and ask questions when local Members of Parliament, Richard Starke of the Conser vative Party and Danny Hozak of Wildrose, attended J. R.’s candidate forum on Tuesday, April 21. “The students were really engaged and sparked a good candidate debate,” said Mr. Maier, our Social Studies teacher.

Guest speaker Trevor Charles spoke with Grade 10 and 11 students on April 23 about his permanent struggle to mentally and physically heal after a drunk driving accident that he was in several years ago. He spoke with impact to students about his stor y, from being a passenger in the speeding vehicle to suffering severe brain damage that left his relearning how to walk, talk, raise his family, and live on.

This opportunity for students to hear Trevor speak wouldn’t have been without the sponsorship of Rock Solid in Vermilion.

In badminton news, Mr. Campbell announced the athletes who qualified for zones: Trista Throndson earned a Silver medal in singles; Jill Dutchak and Julia M cKimmon earned Gold medals in intermediate girls doubles.

Zone competition took place on April 22 in Lloydminster. Trista’s competitive badminton skills reached a personal high despite playing her toughest game ever; Jill and Julia defeated Glendon in the final round and won Gold, qualifying for Provincials. “It was another successful year of badminton,” says Coach Campbell.

As for junior badminton, several Marauders earned medals in Highway 16 Northerns and competed in Highway 16 Finals on April 21. Athletes included Logan Garnier & Jackson Livingstone winning Silver, Carson Livingstone and his partner placing Third, Kent Jackson winning Silver, Jordan Jones placing third, Mark Livingstone & Quentin Rehmann placing Third, Cody Jackson winning Silver, Martina LaBine, Denver Budzilka & Tanner Shaw winning Silver, Morgan Tkachuk & Katrina Yaceyko and Michaela Kozak. Junior finals were hosted by J. R.; Grade 9 students Carter White and Braden Baldwin volunteered to help run the event! In last weekend’s Grade 7 badminton tournament in Kitscoty, Jackson Livingstone and his partner won Gold in mixed doubles while Carson Livingstone and Connor Lychak won Gold in boys’ doubles!

Carson and Connor played a nail-biting game finishing with 22-20! Now with the badminton season over and track and field picking up, students are practicing their running, throwing and jumping skills.

“Graci” (“thanks” in Spanish) goes to our substitute teachers for helping us out by filling in when a staff member is away. Their availability, patience, and

Courage Canada Trail Ride For Brain Injury Survivors Marie Conboy Reporter

Curtis Anderson is not just a survivor of brain injury, he is an advocate for brain injury survivors all over the world and a true inspiration to ever yone.

His outlook on life is positive and truly inspiring. “The best way to heal is from the inside out,” said Anderson.

The Courage Canada Trail Ride supports brain injury awareness and will take place this year on Saturday, May 30.

“I was 27 years old when my accident happened,” said Anderson, “I was competing in bull riding at the Ponoka Stampede. I had a concussion from a bull riding injury two weeks previous.”

The last thing Anderson said he remembers is when he was in the pen with his hands on the rope. “I remember when the gate opened and then it was lights out.

Anderson woke up three weeks later in the hospital in a drug induced state after being treated for severe brain swelling. “ The bull struck me t wice in the head with his head.” Anderson suffered

severe brain injur y and the road to recovery was long. It took years before Anderson could walk and function again independently. Anderson was motivated and inspired during recovery by the music of the great Johnny Cash, “I have mountains to climb and always will.”

Anderson told The Voice last week, that he still enjoys watching bull riding.

There is video footage of the ride from when he was struck, but Anderson said he never wants to see it. He continues to travel to many different rodeos throughout the year and recites his road to recovery speech; he also encourages today’s young riders to always wear helmets.

Anderson star ted the Courage Canada Trail Ride in 2004 to support Brain Injury Awareness and has taken par t in the ride himself ever y year since then. The ride to date has raised $122,485 to help brain injury survivors and their families.

The Trail Ride will be held in the Minburn-Innisfree area, 1 mile North of Minburn on RR 102 then 1.5 miles West on Township 504.

There will be supper at 6.30 p.m. at the Innisfree Community Hall followed by Cowboy Poetry, Fiddling and music featuring Genuine Cowgirls Rai and Randy Smith. Love’s Labour Found At The Vermilion Quilt Show

If you calculated the number of hours invested in making the approximately 200 quilts on display at the Vermilion Regional Centre on May 2 and 3, you could definitely reverse Shakespeare’s axiom and say love’s labour was found at the 18 th Annual Vermilion Quilter’s Show.

“It can take up to a year for me to finish a quilt,” said this year’s featured quilter, Darlene Barlow,” who has been with the Vermilion Quilter’s Guild for “about 12 years.”

Referring to a King sized quilt called “My Own,” that was suspended between the ceiling and floor, Barlow said, “This one took between six to eight months to finish,” which according to Barlow isn’t that long for such a large piece. “It was meant to be, it just flowed.”

Quilters have stories associated with their work, and the story of the quilt that “flowed” is a testament to the perseverance and love that goes into the finished product.

Barlow recounted having to face the decision to take apart her quilt when she realized she was going to be about a meter short of her green fabric. When she couldn’t find more of the fabric, she resigned herself to replacing the green altogether.

“I could have just matched it and nobody would have noticed,” she added.

“But I would have known.”

Although most of the quilts were not for sale, Barlow guesstimated that considering the labour and materials involved in creating quilts, they would be valued between $1,000 to $3,000 depending on their size.

Other quilters’ stories revealed who the items were made for and why. There was a section in memory of Vermilion quilter Lyla Fee. Her quilts were on display including a lap quilt she made for her dad when he moved into a lodge. The display said, “She chose blues, greens, and tans with birdhouses using a pinwheel design and square blocks on point.”

Fee was known for the many quilts she made and gave away to her grand-

children, new babies, her children and as wedding gifts.

Approximately 30 quilts hanging in the foyer of the Vermilion Regional Centre were “sharing quilts” and will be donated to community members and to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

One white glove was handed to attendees at the front door, so people could

touch the quilts without damaging the fabric. Raffle baskets and a light lunch of soup and sandwiches were also available for visitors, while they listened to live music from a variety of artists including Braden Glurley a student pianist.

Visitor Leonie Heron, who belongs to a quilting club in Saskatchewan, said “I come here for inspiration.”

Kathy’s Greenhouse 30th Anniversary Kathy’s Greenhouse in Kitscoty was blooming with astounding vibrant colors on May 2, as the business celebrated their 30th Anniversary.

Owner Jason Andersen said, “We would like to thank all our customers for the last 30 years and hopefully there will be another 30. It’s second generation now and we took over from my mother. She did the first 25 years and we’re working on the next 25.”

Andersen said, “I would encourage everyone to get out and start gardening this summer. It’s relaxing and rewarding to watch your plants, vegetables and flowers grow and to watch them develop.”

Kathy’s Greenhouse is now open for business until the end of December. The garden giftware store is now open with 2016 trial plants in limited supply. The five acres of market garden at the back grows mixed vegetables with one acre of strawberries.

Changing People’s Lives with English Language Classes

The Voice learned how the lives of three people were changed by the English classes provided by the CLASS Vermilion River Adult Learning last week.

Sung Chul Kim, first prize winner of the Literacy Writing Contest, moved to Vermilion three years ago from South Korea. Sung came to Canada for a fresh start like many other emigrants before him.

Imagine how difficult stepping off the plane in a foreign country and not speaking the language must be. It makes things a lot more difficult when you don’t speak the language.

“At first I started learning English in Lakeland College and the Canadian government helped me learn English. I study once

a week for two hours on the internet. I also really improved my speaking while working at the gas station.”

Sung has an inspiring passion to learn English fluently and a love of learning and desire to obtain his career in Canada in his field of Mechanical Engineering.

Esmeralda Giadalipe Alvarez Agilera, from Mexico, was the second prize winner in the writing contest. Agilera came to Canada from Mexico three years ago, “When I came to Canada I had no English at all. English schools were too expensive in Mexico. All the help I got here has really changed my life. I’m a single mother, I have a daughter and now I want to learn English for her.”

Agilera said she misses her home country Mexico but smiles and says Canada is home now too.

Third place literacy contest winner Adama Camara came from Guinea in West Africa. Camara and her two children came to Canada last May to be reunited with her husband after living apart for four years. She had no English when she stepped off the plane. “Today I can ask for help in the foodstore, in the bank and socialize at events.”

CLASS helped her to learn English, make friends and support her. CLASS taught her information about Canada. She joined in the town events and parades.

Gift certificates and prizes were donated to the winners by sponsors East-Alta Co-op, McDonald’s Family Foods and Boston Pizza.

CLASS Literacy Coordinator and English Language Teacher Chandra Blair said, “It’s very rewarding work to see the transforma-

tion in these students. Since I started working here eight years ago, the demand for English language lessons has bloomed with the influx and demand for temporary foreign workers. The link program offers free English language lessons for new residents. We kind of became a newcomer’s centre here, not just for English but for housing and for information about our community.

We recently received a CIP grant from the government to expand our newcomers centre. So now we will be able to offer a new English language course, community tours and events. We are trying to raise $4,000 more so that we will be able to offer the classes for free.”

My name is Sung Chul Kim, and I moved from South Korea to Canada about two years ago. I am a permanent resident in Canada. Before I came here, I was a mechanical engineer in Korea. Currently, I work at Plastic Rotational Kontainers Limited (PRKL plastic). However, once I reach an adequate level of fluency in English, I hope to work as a Mechanical Engineer in Canada (P.Eng.). My qualifications were assessed through Alberta Works last year.

To reach my goal, I looked for an English class, and thankfully, Chandra, the CEO of CLASS, introduced the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program to me. Therefore, I registered for the LINC program at Norquest College in Edmonton where I met Gordon who was a Norquest English teacher. Since then, I have studied English once a week for two hours in class. Through the LINC program,

I have learned Canadian law, culture and symbols. Also, I am learning how to speak on the telephone and practicing writing through email. Although the LINC class helps me improve English, studying English just in class is not enough. So whenever I have time, I study English through the internet.

Using the internet is very effective for learning English, especially for people who have time but cannot go to school to study.

I have learned interactive English via the internet. One of the most useful websites is English-club.com that Gordon recommended to me. In this website, there are so many resources for ESL learners. For reading comprehension, there is a plain English version of The New York Times online newspaper that Chandra sends out through email. Language is habitual and practice makes perfect. There are many native speakers around us, so we can take advantages of it by conversing with them.

Walking Through Grief Facilitator Recognized For 25 Years of Service Shannon O’ Connor Reporter

“Sometimes out of tragedies good things happen,” said Facilitator Shirley Scott at the Society’s Annual General meeting on April 27, referring to the tragedy in her own life that led to the inception of the Walking Through Grief Society, 24 years ago.

A motion was passed at the meeti n g t o r e c o g n i z e S c o t t ’s 2 5 ye a r involvement in the Society, since the group loosely operated for one year in The United Church in Vermilion, before relocating to the Ranchero Café (Wendy’s) in 1991 to their more

permanent present location at the L l oyd S ex u a l A s s au l t Info r m at i o n Center. Donated space by Park View A l l i a n c e, M a r way n e A l l i a n c e, t h e Salvation Army and Mid West Family Connections will also be available to the Society in 2015.

Presently the Society serves three areas, Lloydminster, Vermilion and Wainwright through volunteer facilitators and several Friends of the Society and provides support to those who are grieving the loss of someone in their lives including: victims of homicide, survivors of suicide, child loss, suppor t for children in their losses, and life and death losses.

Scott ’s facilitator repor t summed up the progress that has been made in 2014, including a plan of action to save the history of the Society through photographs and other documented events.

“By next year we will have a book of memories,” said Scott.

She also cited a significant increase o f 1,0 0 5 vo l u n t e e r h o u r s i n 2 014 compared to 2013. In her report she said, “I feel satisfied that we have had a successful year….we will be able to offer support where needed so ‘no one would have to walk unsupported’ on their grief journey.”

Her report also acknowledged the much needed financial suppor t it

receives from businesses, government grants and donations from fundraisers, that allows the Societ y to continue to operate. On behalf of the Society these parties were recognized at the meeting with a cer tificate of appreciation for their support.

Much to her surprise, Scot t also received a glass mosaic butterfly birth bath to acknowledge her 25 years, that was presented to her by Vermilion Facilitator Lynda Moses.

Scott commented that the butterfly is used as a symbol for many worthy causes because “Butterflies represent hope.”

The Vermilion All Candidates’ Forum Marie Conboy Reporter

The All Candidates’ Forum was held April 28, at the Vermilion Regional Centre.

It was hosted by the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce. All three Vermilion/ Lloydminster candidates were in attendance.

A large turnout of community members gathered to hear the upcoming provincial election candidates. The moderator for the evening was Lakeland College Marketing instructor Ben Acquaye. Candidates were given two minutes each to respond to questions from the moderator. There were no questions taken from the members of the public in attendance. Richard Starke was the first candidate to the podium.

“This election is about choosing Alberta’s future. It’s about setting our province firmly on a path where expenditures are controlled, where revenues are reliable and

sufficient to support government surpluses,” said Starke. He said that the long term PC plan the government has presented is measured, balanced and proven, “We will hold the line on government expenditure.”

NDP candidate Saba Mossagizi made her first appearance in Vermilion during the campaign. The 26 - year old union representative works in employee-management relations and is based out of Fort McMurray.

“I was born and raised in Alberta and I’ve never seen Alberta without PC. This province has been PC for 44 years.” Mossagizi said now is a time for change.

“Our NDP leader Rachel Notley has a plan to create jobs and invest in families.

There is no job creation plan for this province from the PC party.” Mossagizi told Vermilion, “I am your alternative to Conservative.”

Wildrose candidate Danny Hozack attacked Jim Prentice. “Jim Prentice

Hozack said that today’s Wildrose party is a group of outstanding candidates who care deeply about this province.” adding, “The PC party calls it a plan. I call it a recipe for

disaster and a mortgage on your children’s futures.”

Voting will take place to elect the new Member of the Legislative Assembly on May 5.

The Royal Canadian Legion and Giggles Comedy Club, which features some of Canada’s top comedians, presented stand-up Paul Myrehaug on May 2.

Myrehaug, who has 15 years of experience in the industry, tackled some sensitive topics but still managed to garner a lot of laughs from the crowd, especially when he referred to the “drunk tank” as a “catch and release program for idiots.”

Myrehaug, who is originally from Alberta, was impressed with the reception he received at the Legion.

Addressing the crowd he said, “Thanks for showing up, it would have been weird if you weren’t here.”

Annual Superintendent’s Public Speaking Competition Reaches New Audiences Shannon O’ Connor Reporter

Superintendent of Buffalo Trail Public Schools, Bob Allen said employing social media tools like YouTube, Twitter, Google Hangouts, hashtags and livestreaming during the 2015 Annual Public Speaking Competition made it “Almost a Sportsnet broadcast.”

“We are broadcasting live to all the schools,” said Allen.

Twenty-six speakers from 16 participating schools in the Buffalo Trail School system took part in this year’s Public Speaking Competition, and for the first time students from the speakers’ respective schools could watch live and cheer them on through a Google Hangout.

People were also invited to leave comments during the event on Twitter via #btps28. Many proud parents, teachers, attendees and fellow students left inspiring comments and messages of encouragement.

Allen tweeted that a woman in Palm Springs messaged how much she enjoyed the Competition, which prompted Jason Yaremchuk to post this comment on Twitter: “I guess you can say #btps28…had international viewer(s).”

Following the competition participants could then watch how they did as the whole

event was posted to YouTube.

Master of Ceremonies, Andrew Wilson from the Vermilion Outreach School was relaxed and kept the event on track while entertaining everyone in house and online.

He exhibited cat like reflexes in response to Irma student, Morgan Ward’s clever speech about why her sister is like a cat. Wilson reminded her that nobody was “Purr-fect.”

Competitors were judged on delivery including poise, appearance, body language, eye contact, and voice and pacing. Speech content was the second consideration which was broken down into a central idea, details and conclusion or opinion.

Gold medalist in Division IV was Grade 10 student Robyn Weber from Kitscoty High School. Weber single-handedly tackled the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) with her theme: The Impact of International Organizations on National or International Events.

In her speech she connected Alberta’s present economic condition to OPEC and cited a statistic of 26,000 recent job layoffs

in the province as a direct result of its policies. In her opinion she said she could just have easily called her speech, “How OPEC Screwed Us All Over,” and concluded her speech with a more than tongue in cheek, “Thanks OPEC.” A popular topic among the Division III students was: “Is Laughter the Best Medicine?” Shane Newberry, a Grade 8 student from J.R. Robson, took a serious approach to the topic when he recounted its applications during his brother’s serious illness.

Anya Kuziw from Marwayne tackled the science of laughter, while Matthew Trefiak from Wainwright was left wondering why he still didn’t have a six-pack since, according to his research, laughter does work out the abdominal muscles.

When all was said and done, Superintendent Bob Allen complimented all of the speakers and personally presented every participant with a certificate noting the courage it takes to stand up and speak in front of an audience.

“You have accomplished great things already,” he added.

It’s A Walk In The Park

There are three easy steps the Lions Foundation of Canada recommends you take before participating in this year’s Purina Walk for Dog Guides that takes place in Vermilion on Sunday, May 31 at 1 p.m.

Step one - if you don’t live in the Vermilion area; find a Walk closer to home.

There are over 200 walks taking place across Canada, and a website search will help you narrow down which is the closest to you.

Step two- fundraise. Use a donation form to start your own fundraising campaign, which could include friends, family, neighbours, businesses and even online resources.

Step three - on the day of the walk, bring the money you have collected and the donation form to the Walk you will be attending so they are ready to go when you register.

Now in its 30th year, the walk raises money so Canadians with physical and

medical disabilities can be provided Dog Guides to assist with their mobility, independence and security on a daily basis.

There are six different types of Dog Guide training programs the Lions Foundation funds: Canine Vision Dog Guides (for people who are blind or visually impaired), Hearing Ear Dog Guides (for people who are deaf or hard of hearing), Autism Assistance Dog Guides (for children who have autism spectrum disorder), Service Dog Guides (for people who have a physical disability), Seizure Response

Dog Guides (for people who have epilepsy) and Diabetic Alert Dog Guides (for people who have type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness).

Each Dog Guide costs approximately $25,000 to raise and train and is provided at no cost to qualified Canadian applicants.

There is no registration fee for the Walk and 100 per cent of the money goes directly toward the Dog Guide training programs. The Lions Foundation of Canada relies solely on money raised

from fundraising efforts and donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and service clubs in Canada.

Since 1983 Dog Guides Canada has provided these specially trained dogs to over 2,000 Canadians ranging from ages 4 to 88.

Town of Vermilion Submitted

The Town of Vermilion is experiencing a spike in growth and development these days.

The town’s Community Economic Development Coordinator, Mary Lee Prior, said there were 52 new development permit applications, 12 of which were for home occupations, approved in 2014. The estimated value of the developments is $24,283,700. Prior

said this upswing in development is the largest spike of its kind in over 10 years.

E q u a l l y n o t a b l e i n 2 014 i s t h e steady growth in industrial development and in the number of housing starts in Vermilion. With 42 new residential dwellings being developed in 2014, it is the highest number of residential developments seen in the last 13 years.

In the first quarter of 2015 the Town of Vermilion is breaking records again

with 12 development permits taken out estimated at $25,918,000. More than 2014 or any of the year’s prior.

The increased growth is due mainly to our Highway Commercial, Junction Sixteen 41 developments said Prior.

Viewed in a Google Hangout, the division was able to watch the contestants deliver their speeches from the comfort of their classrooms. Both girls performed amazingly in the unknown environment. Jelena snatched up the silver prize for the division II category for her enlightening speech on, “What Can I Do to Change the World”. Not everyone has this ability and we are very proud of Jelena’s public speaking talents. Outstanding efforts, Jelena and Laramie!

Panthers are also unique and display creative ways to pursue their targets. Mr. Blatchford’s pride of junior high students revealed the magic of Science as they observed the creation and operation of a potato clock. Who would’ve thought that a potato had enough power to run a clock (or hold a junior high student’s attention)?

The Information Technology Department at Lakeland College is responsible for providing related technology services and resources for our Vermilion and Lloydminster campuses. We support and facilitate the technology needed to enhance the learning experience for our users.

Reporting to the IT Operations Manager the successful Computer Network Technician II will be responsible for implementation, monitoring and analysis of the wired and wireless network. The Computer Network Technician II must have experience in a network environment with windows and VMware. Security knowledge is an asset.

Responsibilities • Support a virutal server and desktop envionment.

• Support security applications and patch management.

• Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills.

• Efficient writing and communication skills.

VES will once again have its annual breakfast. It will take place in our school gym on May 14 from 7:30-9:30a.m. French toast, sausages, fruit, coffee and juice will be served for $5/plate. Please come out and enjoy your breakfast with us.

The Scholastic Book Fair was another successful fund raiser. The winners of our Family Event Door Prize were Connor Ryan and Miss Kjenner’s grade 3 class.

Hemauer, Danielle Eriksen, Lynnal Miller, Kaylan Zorn, Kate Chapman, and the staff of VES. Students who signed up to be part of this year’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraising were skipping their way to their goals at noon recess on April 24.There were approximately 75 students involved in the program this year and they had a terrific time developing skills and bringing awareness to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. They appreciate the support they received from family, friends and the community that helped them raise approximately $8300.

Intramurals for the month of May include an old favorite and a new option. Students can attend LEGO intramurals on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week, where they can use their creativity and team work to build new designs and

challenges each week. Budding Buddies is a new intramural that will combine the efforts of teachers and students on Mondays and Wednesdays to beautify our school grounds. Students will be weeding, planting, watering, and cleaning up our school beds and school yard for the months of May and June. We are hoping to have some tools, containers, and plants/trees donated to help support this program. If you would like to donate, please contact the school office. Walking Club will continue to count their steps on Fridays during the month of May. The first Monday in May has been designated as School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. This year that day falls on May 4. In a rural community the school bus driver has a very important role in a child’s education. Show your appreciation for the dedication and commitment your

bus drivers give to your school community on this special day.

On May 6, Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health – Hats On For Health. VES will relax its hat rules and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school.

Canadian Diabetes Association Hits The Streets Canadian Diabetes Society Submitted

The Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) is literally hitting the streets this April/May with a spring door-todoor campaign. The campaign will run from April 27 to May 20, 2015. “ W i t h e v e r y o n e ’s h e l p w e w i l l raise over $400,000 from our spring campaign. These funds will directly impact every single individual living w i t h d i a b e t e s i n yo u r c o m m u n i t y and Alber ta,” says Jason Demers, M a n ag er, M i s s i o n Fu n d i n g at t h e Canadian Diabetes Association. “We are ver y grateful for the time and expertise our volunteers share and the donations received from the communities they serve.”

The mission of the Canadian Diabetes Association is to lead the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while we work to find a cure. This campaign is timely as d iabetes is a ser ious disease that has reached epidemic pro por tions in Canad a. Currently, more than nine million Canadians, or one in four, are living with diabetes or

pre-diabetes—a number expected to rise to one in three by 2020.

Complications from Diabetes cause: 30 per cent of strokes, 40 percent of heart problems, 50 percent of kidney problems and 70 percent of amputations.

Funds raised from this campaign will be used to support diabetes research, to provide residents with local diabetes educational resources including educational events in the community and to facilitate efforts in advocacy.

Proceeds will additionally be used to help send 210 children with type 1 diabetes to the Canadian Diabetes Association›s D-Camp, Camp Jean Nelson in Alberta, one of 12 camps across Canada that provides a unique ex p er i e n c e to 2,4 0 0 c h il d re n an d youth living with type 1 diabetes each year.

3 Cities 4-H Multi-Club

There have been a lot of fun filled activities for the 3 Cities 4-H Club in the month of March. We star ted with District Curling on March 21 in Vermilion. There was a great turnout of members and it was an exciting day. Congratulations to Anna Allan for being part of the team that won first!

All in all everyone had a blast!

Nex t ac tion for the c lub was on March 22, our 4-H building project day, started at 2 p.m. at the Wrights’ farm everyone set to work. The Beef group had made tack boxes, branding them afterwards. The Outdoor group constructed survival backpacks, and the Horse group built saddle holders or ropes. After all the projects were completed we ended the day with a

March 27 and 28 was the 4-H Spring Fling, and our club was in charge of the obstacle course. Many members attended it, and the obstacle course was a success! We included obstacles like a wheelbarrow barrel race, tent building, fence post puzzle and dog agility course based off of each of our projects in the 3 Cities Multi Club.

Finally we would like to recognize FCC for donating $500 to the Outdoor project!

modern numbers. The event culminated in students from all grades encircling the gym and performing “We Are One.” They will be performing this song with the students from St. Jerome’s on Monday May 4 at 11 a.m. for Music Monday where thousands of musicians across the country sing on the same day at the same time to celebrate the gift of music.

Linda Nelson Retires Linda Nelson said goodbye to Stewart Realty after 18 and a half years, April 30. The kindergarten and Grade 1 classes joined together this week to enjoy the Vermilion Provincial Park. The classes took a hike along the trails listening for birdcalls such as chickadee-dee-dee, caw, caw, and honk-honk, to mention a few.

They were pleased to see some insects, budding leaves, birds, lady bugs, rabbits and gophers, even a purple butterfly! They enjoyed a snack in the warmth of the sun, and then had a fun time playing together on the fabulous play set.

On May 22 four teachers have agreed to partake in a tortuous activity. Each teacher has chosen a charity to donate to if they win. The teacher with the most donations will be the one who gets tortured. Please come to the office and make your donations. Mrs. Dieken – syrup poured on her, then confetti thrown at her (Charity - St. Jerome’s Playground). Ms. Partington –

hair dyed and styled (Charity – Alberta Cancer Foundation). Mr. Wheat – Singing “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift dressed as her (Charity – World Vision). Mrs. Eriksen – Singing “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus dressed in an inflatable ninja suit (Charity – Vermilion Food Bank). The Grade 10 Leadership class is organizing this great event.

The Grade 5 students completed their science unit on Electricity by designing and construction a flashlight and a burglar alarm during this past week. The students consulted with their partners and used the knowledge of circuits and switches that they had investigated during the unit to accomplish their task. The students then shared their creations with kindergarten to Grade 3 students.

May is a very busy month. With retreats, Spirit trips, the May long weekend, Student Council elections, and field trips beginning the month is going to fly by. Early dismissal is on Wednesday, May 13 at 2:00 pm. The Sr. High Spirit Trip is on Thursday, May 14.

There is no school on Friday, May 15 or on Monday. May 18.

Students have been working hard making sure courses are complete, outfits are chosen, and all the little details for their spring exercises are ready! For any community members wanting to come see this fine group of Grade 12’s “walk the stage” come to the school Friday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m.

This year’s Grade 12’s are: Kaylie Anderson, Olivia Anderson, Dustin Babij, Chelsea Baker, Stephen Baker, Kyle Bell, Cameron Bergeron, Austin B o r y s i u k , A n d r e a B u r y, S h a e l y n Fahselt, Reagan Hr yhirchuk, Kolby Kaziechko, Dawson Konieczny, Eric M ac Neill, M athew M at ter s, Car ter Myhovich, Kaitlyn Romain, Douglas Strowger, Robin Wanuch and Colton Whiting.

Education Week runs from May 4 to May 8. On Monday we hope to see everyone wearing their school colors and a pancake lunch will be enjoyed by all staff and students. Tuesday, everyone will be out in the morning ‘Pitching In” by helping to clean within our community. On Wednesday it is “Hats On For Mental Health” and our Grade 10 students will be attending ‘Try A Trade’ in Lloydminster. ‘Try A Trade’ hosts all the Grade 10 students in our school division. Over 50 trades are represented there and students are able to get information from the different trades such as pipefitting, insulating, heavy equipment, etc. Thursday will be D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And

Read) for all the grades. The week ends with a Formal Dress-Up Day and of course our Spring Exercises on the Friday.

We must thank all our students playing the roles of the people involved in the mock accident in the It Can’t H a p p e n To M e p r e s e nt at i o n: Er i c MacNeill, Carter Myhovich, Laramie, Olivia and Kaylie Anderson.

The Grade 5 room has been transformed into a chemistr y lab. They have been baking, making mixtures, separating mixtures, changing states of matter, and making crystals. They created special mixtures and within a day some crystals were already forming!!

The Grade 4 and 5 class visited Lakeland College for Ag Safety Days on Wednesday, April 22. It was a great learning experience for all of them. They learned about equipment, machiner y, animal, bike, chemical, fire, electricity, and grain safety as well as a brief course on CPR and first aid. As a class they travelled to each station. At each station they were completely engaged by the presenters and the props and demonstrations. The students were also treated to a delicious lunch and a goody bag, including a t-shirt. We would like to thank Lakeland College and all of the sponsors for putting this free event on for our students, they loved it!
