Students Raise Questions About Alberta’s Future

Vermilion-Lloydminster candidates went head to head at the J.R. Robson School election forum, April 21. “It’s important for the students to know that they themselves can make a difference and that they have a role in our democratic society,” said Vice Principal Darren Grosky.

PC candidate for Vermilion-Lloydminster Dr. Richard Starke and Wildrose candidate Danny Hozack both had five minutes to pitch their policy goals.

“You will have enough college debt, you don’t need provincial debt,” said Wildrose runner Hozack.

“Alberta is one of the best places in the world to live,” said Starke, “Just ask the thousands of people that come to Alberta every day for opportunity. That’s why my parents came here.”

Starke is running to win his second term as MLA. Hozack finished second to Starke in the 2012 general election, receiving 4,628 votes while Starke had 6,252. Both candidates have been busy making tracks

canvassing up and down Highway 16 in recent weeks.

J.R Robson students raised environmental and economic concerns for Alberta’s future. Hozack promised, “The first thing we need to do is to get the fiscal house in order so that we can deal with the environmental challenges.”

Starke in opposition said, “Alberta is an environmental leader. We have a fantastic tourism industry. It’s about choices for the future and the PC party has a balanced and measured plan to take us forward so that you will have jobs to make your hopes and dreams come true.”

Teachers and students engaged in the debate and raised the question, “What are you going to do to get Alberta out of its current downturn?”

Hozack believes that the Wildrose plan will balance the budget by 2017, without raising taxes and without hurting frontline services, “We will eliminate 1600 managers from the upper loaded management levels in the Alberta Health Services and eliminate waste in upper ranks of government.”

Starke said, “As your PC candidate I will

cut government waste and focus dollars on the front lines. Health care is about people, and we need to invest in our schools, hospitals and roads and most of all protect Alberta jobs.”

Fifteen J.R. Robson students will be eligible to vote on May 5, Election Day. Indi-

viduals must be 18 years of age or older on voting day, be a Canadian citizen, and have been a resident in Alberta for the six months immediately preceding voting day.

Students engage in the election forum with candidates and raise their concerns for Alberta’s future.

History And Heart At Eagle View Lodge’s 50th Anniversary over the years.

Lodge resident Susan Kitt’s daughter, Karen Colford, spoke of the feeling of ease and support that Eagle View provides to both her and her mother.

“It is such a welcoming place. It’s like I have many siblings taking care of mom. Thank you a million times.”

Mayor of Myrnam, Ed Sosnowski reiterated this feeling and got choked up when he spoke of his mother who was a former resident at the Lodge.

“She still calls it her home,” he said.

There was a lot of history and a lot of heart on display at the 50th Anniversar y of the Eagle View Lodge in Myrnam on Friday, April 24.

“We are one of the original U-shaped lodges that the province built,” said Chief Administrative Officer Wanda Sullivan who has been with the Lodge for the past ten years. The original ribbon cutting ceremony took place on April 21, 1965.

Past and present board members, local politicians, representatives from the Alberta Senior Citizens Housing Association and the Eagle Hill Foundation were in attendance and acknowledged other milestones in Eagle View Lodge’s 50 year history.

Sayler, said when he was a board member, the Premier of the province came to Myrnam because Eagle View Lodge was the first facilit y in rural Alberta to set up an Alzheimer’s unit and have an attached medical clinic. “ We were the model of the province,” he added.

Eagle Hill Foundation Chairman, Albert Pidruchney addressed the challenges that were met in the past and the challenges that the future poses in terms of modernization in a political climate of “reduced funding,” and an aging population.

“As a board we are going to have to deal with baby boomers that are going to come to this facility.”

Under the tutelage of dance instructor, Jamie McIldoon and her assistant, Emma Jackson, many of the dances performed won silver, gold and diamond ratings at the Vermilion Dance Festival the day before.

Three veteran dancers, Emma Jackson and Kaylie and Olivia Anderson, graduated from the ranks of the club. All three girls have danced with the club for 10-12 years.

Jim Storch said they will be asked to guest dance at the annual Robbie Burns Night next year.

“Emma has also assistant taught for many years and will be sadly missed,” he added.

T h e o t h e r d ay while sitting down for dinner, I looked around the table and each one of us had our cell phones safely tucked away by our dinner plates. I for one have my cell phone with me constantly and feel completely obligated to answer a text message or phone call no matter when it is or where I am.

My family often become disturbed by my frequent phone calls or messages and will tell me to put the thing away for a while. My question to all of us is have we become so addicted to modern day technology? I think yes. One time, not so long ago, it was a privilege to own a cell phone but now even young children are blessed with the mobile device.

If you go out to a restaurant, or anywhere in public for that matter and look around, you will see so many families who are completely consumed with what’s happening on their screens. Family members of all ages are texting, surfing the web, checking social media sites or playing games; no one is actually participating in a face to face conversation. How often do you hear the delightful sound of laughter filling a restaurant from personal interactions nowadays?

It’s not like it used to be. We have become so engrossed in our own world of cyberspace, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook.

If you were to check Facebook every minute you can find conversations occurring with people making comments like -

hey, haven’t seen you in forever, or full blown conversations between two people, maybe more, about what each person has done throughout the day. The question I pose is, isn’t it better to just pick up the phone and speak with someone and actually converse using our voices instead of our fingers? I think it’s much more personal that way.

I am a texter, no doubt about it, but there are many times when I stop texting and just call the person who I am texting with because honestly the texting becomes annoying after a bit. I can express what I want to say so much better and be more to the point by speaking to the person then through a toneless text message.

Cell phones are not the only technology that we have become addicted to; children as young as 6 years old, as well as adults have addictions to video games. You may ask, what is the big deal with children spending countless hours playing video games or using the computer? What is wrong with the world relying so heavily on today’s technology and social networking? You may think these forms of communication and entertainment are making us more social thus it is beneficial. In actual fact it is making our generation and our future generations a social delinquent. Many people, especially our teenagers, have almost forgotten how to interact with people the old fashion way.

Like I said before, walk into a café, restaurant or anywhere else that provides a Wi-Fi connection and you will not see many people talking to each other. The digital world is dividing us in social settings and at home.

For the first time, Kalyna Country Primary Care Network (PCN) is joining 9 other PCNs from the Edmonton area in the Get Out Get Active Challenge (http://GetOutGetActivePCN.com). It’s a fun way to put a little step in your spring! Starting on April 27, join your family, friends, PCN staff and/or family doctor as you virtually “go on safari” across Africa.

Participants are encouraged to do 10,000 steps a day, or the equivalent by doing other activities such as biking, swimming or even gardening. You can monitor your progress online to see how far you have gone on your personal safari, as well as to see how your overall PCN is doing. Motivational tips and interesting facts will be on the website to help participants with their trek across Africa.

During the Get Out, Get Active challenge, you will either use a pedometer to track the number of steps you take throughout the day or you will record the time you spent and what activity you did. The online program can translate time in various activities into the equivalent in steps.

We’re excited to be able to benefit from the success of previous Get Out, Get Active challenges done in the Edmonton area. This year the challenge includes 10

Edmonton and area PCNs (Alberta Heartland, Camrose, Edmonton North, Edmonton Southside, Edmonton West, Kalyna Country, Leduc Beaumont Devon, Sherwood Park – Strathcona County, St. Albert Sturgeon, and WestView). You do not have to be attached to a physician with a PCN or to a PCN clinic to participate; anyone who wants to get more active can join.

You are welcome to challenge those around you to get active with you. We encourage you to gather people to do the challenge with in order to keep yourself motivated and to have more fun. Besides, we are speaking of a virtual trek across Africa, and there is safety in numbers!

used more frequently to pacify our children and used as electronic babysitters. I have seen this first hand and if you try to remove their entertaining object away from them, even to eat, the consequence you will receive in the form of a temper tantrum is unfathomable.

Relationships between spouses have become unglued due to the lack of intimacy and communication caused by our technological devices when one spouse is not as addicted as the other, and wishes to actually spend time with their spouse only to feel less important than the person on the other end of the device.

People of all ages have lost loved ones or have seen their loved ones lives destroyed due to the lethal addiction of cell phone use while driving just because you can’t wait to check the message coming in or answer one back. We are all guilty of doing this at

some point.

I am not saying that all technology is bad or that we should not use it in our everyday lives, we can learn so much from the internet. Texting is a great way of staying in touch and a form of communication especially when you are unable to make the phone call. Video games can have a positive effect in our children’s lives as it is great for hand and eye coordination, along with the many educational tools games can supply if used correctly. Social media can keep families and friends connected in each other’s lives when there is distance between them.

The point is, moderation is what makes it all balance out. Don’t let technology consume your life and break real social interactions whether it is with a friend, spouse or child. Don’t let technology become your lifeline; use your voice instead of your thumbs.

I can’t believe how fast April is cruising by, must be all the yard work I have to do.

There is usually still snow and ice in April, so yard cleanup and grooming is usually much later.

April showers bring May flowers… something we haven’t seen too much of either as I write this. It is getting dry out there, so be wild fire conscious, even though the potholes, ponds and sloughs are full with water, dead grass is like tinder.

It looks like rain this coming weekend of the 25-26…something I could take better on a weekday, but we need a good rain; for one, it will cleanse everything, and for another, we need green stuff.

According to my logs the earliest full green leaf bloom on the poplar trees on the Battle River Valley was May 5. The trees are full of buds and pussy willows; all we need is that moisture in the form of rain.

Forest fires are at a high risk right now, so be aware in our awesome Alberta outdoors. The long weekend in May usually has everyone outdoors, but fire usually isn’t an issue then as we all know

This April has been awful windy also; a minor forest or grass fire could get away in a hurry when fed by a strong wind and end up a true wild fire. Keep the fireworks locked up.

The mosquitoes are out near my home in full force. It seems they like the indoors in my shop more than the outdoors. I’m not sure what that means; maybe they are trying to escape the frogs.

It seems that my frog farm is trying to compete with the neighbour’s pond frogs.

I’m sure whoever sings the loudest wins.

Even my momma Robin has to sit there and listen.

I’m sure she couldn’t hear herself sing if she tried, and when she does try, it seems the frogs turn it up a notch.

Oh well, it’s a calming effect. I love the sounds of spring.

I even got a chance to get out and wash off some fishing hooks. The fishing wasn’t that great as the wind was causing white caps on a pond, which makes it a little hard to read the water. The best part was just getting out there.

Now is the time to do it and it is fast and the best part is I printed off five copies.

I laminated the copies and put one in my wallet, one in my tackle box, one in my fishing vest, and a couple spares in

the truck. I shouldn’t have an excuse now for not having a fishing licence on hand.

I made a new trail through the “back 40” for my quad so I can run Miss Pickles, my new pup. She just turned five weeks and is full of pee and vinegar; must be the teenage stage for pups.

I run her for a couple of reasons, one is because she eats like a horse or would eat it too, and two, just to burn off some of that endless energy she has. I try to get her out daily for a good run.

I was quite shocked to see her run, she will top out at 35 kmph and levels out at 25 kmph for as long as I run her. Once she kept up that pace for 6 kms. She is so fast.

She has a long body, something a dog team runner or “musher” would look for.

Off the line, she runs full out stretching out like a cheetah feline. If I had six more of her I would think of re-running my dog team.

I will train and run her on a sled this winter for sure. I will bet she will have no problem whatsoever pulling me on a proper dog sled. I now wish I hadn’t sold my racing dog sled.

I do have a sled harness already for her; years ago I had a Karelian Bear dog, which is similar to the “Malamute or Husky” breed in Finland for bear and large predator protection.

This dog was fast and crazy…all it

wanted to do was run. It would stay by your side, but if you went indoors for just a second, it was gone. So I bought it a dog pulling harness and thought I would slow it down.

So one winter night I had archery shooters coming to the shop. I took one of the old tires off my truck, rim and all, and tied it to the harness. I was proud of myself as the dog stayed in the yard, slowly pulling and ploughing the tire around. Then I went into the shop. Minutes later, one of my shooters showed up and asked if anyone lost a tire a mile down the road.

That dog pulled that tire until the super strong nylon rope burned off from gravel on the road.

He was a fast dog but Miss Pickles is already as fast as that dog was at his best. She should have the strength also, something to look forward to next winter, but I will start her training this summer.

So much to do outdoors, so little time it seems…let’s all get out there and enjoy.

Thirty senior high art students boarded J.R.’s activity bus for a day of art-viewing in Edmonton. The first stop was at MacEwan’s fine arts campus on 156 St. where the annual Graduate Exhibition took place.

Installations, paintings, drawings and sculptures by college students were on display for us to see and experience, and we also got a tour of the art facilities on campus.

Next on the itinerary was a quick stop in Chinatown where we experienced “Dim Sum”, a Cantonese-Chinese form of lunch.

From there we circled the Alberta Gallery of Art downtown to question, admire or detest the architecture before heading to Jasper Avenue and 124 Street. There the Gallery district (11 art galleries within a 4-block radius) showered us with collections of art to view. Dr. Larry Louis’ Photography Studio met us with the photographer himself and an impactful display of black and white images capturing life, poverty, and faces foreign to us and our lifestyle in Canada.

Our last stop before departing for Vermil-

ion was to Delta Art & Drafting Supply for kids to see what a “real” art store offers and feels like inside. Thanks to chaperone and precision driver, Mr. Bates, for getting us there and back smoothly, and for patiently circling blocks to find parking!

The school’s latest fundraising efforts are going towards Vermilion Lakeland College for their efforts in neutering and spaying animals from the Lloydminster SPCA. How did we raise the funds? By bidding on selected contenders! The contender with the most raised funds locked lips with a little Billy Goat, brought in by Ashley (Grade 7) and Cavin (Grade 9) Jones. Those up for this gruff experience included Lleyton Bates, Beaudon Rogers, Evan Howard, Kale Wilhelm, Mrs. Polishuk, Mr. Bates, Mr. Woodward, Miss Borysiuk, and Mr. Weidner. Kale and Evan were the highest bid, and Mrs. Polishuk’s Chemistry class ensured that she was also a winner. Amusingly, the Lloydminster music station, The Goat, caught wind of the fundraising effort.

The 4th Annual Buffalo Trail Public Schools Superintendent’s Public Speaking Competition will be held on Thursday, April 30th, 2015. Shane Newberry in grade 8

will be our sole competing Marauder in this event taking place at Alumni Hall Theater.

Get MAD, the division-wide fine arts night, was held this year at Wainwright High School. The evening event featured music, theatre, and art from several schools throughout the division and featured the creative and performance talents of students from kindergarten to Grade 12. J. R. boasted of our young drama club as well as a strong body of junior and senior high art.

Final school fee notices were sent home at the end of March. Parents are reminded that any outstanding school fee amounts will be turned over to Buffalo Trail on May 1st for their collection.

We couldn’t even imagine a meal served or prepared in these modern times that didn’t have all manners of flavours and spices added to enhance the appearance and taste of almost everything we consume.

In our modern superstores there are whole aisles devoted to all manner of sauces and spices to spice up our lives.

It would take a whole page to list them all!

I guess I’m saying we’re a bit spoiled to have such a variety of products to vary our diets so the thought of bland tasteless meals wouldn’t occur to us. All our diverse nationalities in this country now have exposed us to so many different food preferences that we can’t even imagine what the early folks would have had to put up with, at all. Imagine trying to cook without even an iron pot to sit on a cooking fire, let alone not having anything to spice up the stew or whatever else they could find. Perhaps as they trav-

elled along some plants like sage or wild onions would occur but remember in very early times on these prairies, they didn’t have horses to carry things, so you can easily imagine they kept the loads light as possible, you think?

Salt would maybe be attainable in some areas, but can you imagine a meal without ANY salt now?

As time passed and the fur trade was developing, guns, booze, and metal cooking pots took the bulk of the space in the freight canoes, and it would seem the vitals were left not spiced!! As the country became more settled as the railroads came to allow easier travel and transport, more and more people from different countries and cultures brought so many different styles of cooking and uses for the spices that came along too. I can remember as a youngster my first taste of garlic and how wonderful it made meat taste. Then garlic was added to sauerkraut and dill pickles were spiced up with a clove or two. Yes, dill grew easily in a lot of gardens and my Wolter grandparents grew various spices that later seemed to be weeds as we didn’t know how to use them. My folks made fabulous sausages

and bacon and ham using them though!!

How times change and tastes, I guess too. Home canning and pickle making has faded into the background and we all are the poorer for it, but I reckon it’s easier to cruise the supermarket instead of planting and harvesting the makings of pickles, buying the vinegar and all the spices needed to make those marvelous goodies we really took for granted as kids.

I remember the “Blue Ribbon” brand of spices Mom preferred and how she made those dill, mustard, and all the various relishes and sauces we somehow took for granted. All her dishes were artfully spiced in a like manner if it was rice pudding and cinnamon or her Christmas carrot pudding that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Yes there were spices for whatever dish she made and even horseradish and bay leaves helped make different meals so savory.

Mom never had the convenience of a modern stove, but had to contend with a sometimes cantankerous old woodstove that had to deal with wood of indifferent quality. I guess the theory is now we all consume way more salt then we need and black pepper is left in the dust

of all the hot chilies and chipotles that are in everything from chicken wings to hot dogs. Wow!! And now the jury is trying to find out just how harmful all the sugars we consume in the soft drinks and different foods are that subject us to levels of sugar we’re not designed to contend with.

Any sugar in early times was so very rare and expensive, that until lately wasn’t at all readily available.

Now it’s too big a part of our diets, our systems in many cases are developing resistance to it and diabetes is all too common - it would seem. I’m so very pleased I came along as the art of spices reached its peak and all the wonderful days of gals who made an art form of spicing and preparing all those marvelous dishes, pudding and pickles that we enjoyed in those wonderful days before all the conveniences stole the idea of homemade is better. I hope there is a revival and I see signs of people getting back to the idea of gardening and doing their own thing their own way and turning their back on the food that like the old days was tasteless and not the quality us old guys knew it can be.

The Spartan Olympics took place on Friday afternoon as a surprise to the students. All students were divided into teams with members from Grade 12 – kindergarten. Teams had to compete in a variety of tasks; some trivia, outdoor activities, cooperation activities, mathematical questions and puzzles throughout the afternoon. It was wonderful to see the different ages interacting with

one another, older students helping out younger students and getting to know each other. Congratulations to Mrs. Dieken’s team for finishing first followed by Mrs. Fraser’s team in second. A huge thank you to Mr. MacMillan for countless hours of work organizing this event with the help of Sr. Council. Also a big thanks to the many volunteers who came out to help run a station for the afternoon.

Lights were seen flashing and sirens could be heard blaring around 11:30 a.m. from the RCMP station parking lot on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

The kindergarten classes eagerly waited their turn to pile into the back seat of the patrol car. They were even more thrilled

when they were allowed to switch on the lights and sirens!! After a tour of the cells, asking many question, being handcuffed and seeing the tools that an officer carries on their belt, the children could not wait to role play being police officers once they returned to school.

On April 23, 2015, the Grade 6 class went to test their hands as members of our legislative assembly in Edmonton. The students were given various roles such as Premier, Government members, Opposition members, Lieutenant Governor and many other positions. This allowed them the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of what each member of our government does to make Alberta a

great place to live. The students tested their knowledge in a competitive game of Race of the Ridings. The trip was finished off with a tour of the beautiful legislature building and a photo on the fabulous marble stairs. It was a great learning experience for all involved!

Eight Sr. High Badminton players represented St. Jerome’s at Zones in Lloydminster on Wednesday, April 21.

Congratulations to all the players for their great playing and sportsmanship they demonstrated. Congratulations to Morgan Wilson and Sydney Poliakiwski who placed third, which was our highest placing.

April is National Poetr y M onth. Did you scribble a few lines? It’s alright if you didn’t, or if you did and don’t want to say so. Poetry will carry on, like an obscure mountain stream, with or without our participation.

A poem is a social element connecting the human experience in a common space. Poets are the conduits, presenting to us combinations of words reflecting some aspect of life they have either experienced or wondered about or observed.

We, the readers, are invited not only to listen to the rhythms of language, but to contemplate meanings in the context of our own lives. Poetry is interactive, a kind of friendly sparring match between poet and reader. The poet may be the author but the reader inserts, through interpretation, a personalization into the text. Poetry’s door is always ajar.

For Many

I first heard the voice of poet/spoken word artist, Shane Koyczan, while watching a YouTube promo video for David Suzuki’s 2014 Blue Dot Tour. He narrated the video with his poem, “Shoulders”. In mythology, Koyczan writes, there are two versions of the story of Atlas. The first claims that his punishment for leading a rebellion against Olympus was to hold the weight of the earth upon his shoulders for eternity. The second declares that he was chosen as the trusted guardian of the pillars supporting the complementary entities, earth and sky. In the poem, the narrator prefers the second version.

He is drawn to the implicit message of Atlas the mighty Titan holding up the world, not because it’s a punishment but because it’s a responsibility. It projects a striking image, especially in the context of a narration to promote a tour whose focus is our environment. Our earth, our responsibility.

Poetry is as personal as it is universal. Implicit in its form, regardless of the theme, is a perpetual quest to better understand ourselves and our place in

the world.

Koyczan has achieved what few poets can claim to have done in the 21st Century, if ever: attracting sold out audiences. Maybe it’s his honesty. Or the style of his delivery. Maybe it’s the subject matter he selects to explore in his poetry.

The best writing, a workshop facilitator told me once, is that which emerges from a writer willing to examine the source of all that aches deep within herself and then to bare that to the world. Oh, THAT. When asked in inter views where his ideas come from, Koyczan speaks succinctly. They come from life. A bullied, self-conscious kid, he discovered, through writing, both a means of self-expression and solace.

That doesn’t imply that writing poetry is an escape nor that it has the power to vaporize pain. Through his writing, Koyczan found a voice, a confident means of responding to a world that can present a foreboding forest of obstacles to ordinary people yearning only for acknowledgement, for confirmation that they matter.

Koyczan’s poem, “For Many”, asks the

question ‘if you could change anything about your body, what would it be’? It’s a question many might answer without hesitation. Why is it though, that we’re perpetually dissatisfied, perceiving some part of ourselves as gravely inadequate?

What are the repercussions of allowing our definition of Beauty to rely so heavily upon idyllic, rarely achievable physical appearances while dismissing who we are beneath the surface of our skin as unimportant? When someone asks us to consider this question, Koyczan’s poem reads, what they’re really asking is if there’s some part of ourselves that we hate. A moment focused on self-loathing is a moment focused on that which weakens us.

The last line of the poem lingers with me. It reads, “Many would change their minds into doors and they would leave them open to let you in”. Poetry offers an opportunity to examine what we think is important or true, and to consider new possibilities awaiting us just beyond the horizon.

Mannville School News Susan Obrigewitch, Mannville School Submitted

The junior high badminton season is just about wrapped up. We had 20 athletes come out to play this year. On April 14 and 15 athletes went to Kitscoty and Marwayne to compete in the BTPS Northern Playoffs.

It was a great day for the students and they played some great badminton and represented our school and community with pride and sportsmanship. Everyone was playing hard to try and earn a qualifying spot in the BTPS Finals which were at J.R. Robson on April 21. Baylee Konieczny and Cole Demas won gold for Grade 7 mixed doubles and Jordan Borysiuk won silver which enabled these athletes to compete in the finals in Vermilion. Max Amero played off for the bronze medal and just missed out on winning.

The BTPS Finals tournament saw some tremendous competition amongst the athletes. Jordan’s pool was extremely competitive as Jordan wound up needing to play game 3 in all of his round robin matches. Even though Jordan played well, he just missed the semi-final matches by finishing third in his pool. Baylee and Cole had a great tournament as they went unde-

feated through the entire tournament to bring home the gold medal.

Congratulations go out to all of Mannville School’s badminton players as they worked hard, showed dedication in their practices and great sportsmanship at the tournaments. Thank you to all of the parents for getting kids to and from practice, helping take the athletes to the events, and coming out to support our teams.

Grade 10 student, Kenzie Smith, won gold at the BTPS Districts Badminton Tournament earning her a spot at the NEASAA Badminton Zones in Lloydminster on Wednesday, April 22. At the Zones, Kenzie worked very hard throughout every match and received the Silver Medal and will now be playing in the Provincial Competition in May. Good luck goes out to Crystal Steel who will be representing our school at the BTPS Superintendent’s Public Speaking Competition on Thursday, April 30 at the Alumni Hall Theater at Lakeland College. The topics for the Junior High Division were: 1) is laughter the best medicine? and 2) the things that I can do to make the world a better place.

Swimming lessons and field trips have started for our kindergarten class. The swimming lessons are in the morning, and then the kinder kids will be going on a community field trip each afternoon in the town of Vermilion. Their first field trip was to the College Farm and the next one will be to Boston Pizza.

Don’t be alarmed by the wrecked vehicle you will see on the school grounds on April 29. It is just part of ‘It Can’t Happen to Me’ whereas a mock accident is set up to teach students in Grade 9 the dangers of drinking and driving.

I recently hosted a course on chalk paint from a top Canadian chalk p a i nt d i s tr i b u tor. T h e c o ur s e wa s fantastic, and I learned many things about chalk paint that I can share with you.

Chalk paint is popular in the refinishing of furniture. The use of chalk paint is widely found on Pinterest and blogs. At lot of people like myself may wonder; what is the advantage of using chalk paints over regular latex or oil paint? One of the benefits of using chalk paint is that the project does not require prior stripping, sanding or priming. When refinishing a piece of furniture, the prep work usually takes 80 – 90 per cent of the time. With chalk paint that step is eliminated and that time is saved, giving you, your beautiful results much faster.

niques involved in creating a desired finish. The basic technique is to simply paint the furniture. Another technique invo l ve s p aint in g t h e fur ni ture an undercoat of one color, then painting an overcoat of anther colour. Using a cotton cloth dampened with water, the overcoat paint is then removed in selected areas to produce the desired effect. This technique can create interesting colour depth and produce the effect of vintage wear.

The ability to remove paint with water after it has dried is another benefit that chalk paint has over latex and oil paint.

A second technique to create interesting tex ture is to paint the furniture with an undercoat of chalk paint that is applied in thick and thin areas, so that the thick paint has a raised surface. An overcoat in an alternate colour is then applied and left to dry.

When the overcoat is dry, the furniture is then sanded, especially where the undercoat is thick, to reveal interesting textural patterns and patina. This paint sands very easily and does not gum up the sandpaper like a latex paint will.

“The more debt you have the less quality of life you have,” said Danny Hozack in an interview following the opening of his new campaign office in Lloydminster on April 22.

The Wildrose candidate is covering ground in the Vermilion-Lloydminster riding.

Hozack, who used to be a member of the PC party, said he left because the party was putting the interests of the party ahead of the interests of the people.

“If you put a frog in boiling water it will jump out, but if you put the frog in a pot of cold water and turn the burner on it will stay there until it’s slowly cooked and that’s the way a lot of our PCs and taxpayers are. It’s slowly been getting hotter and hotter and we’re going to be cooked unless we jump out of the pot right now.” Hozack said now is the chance to jump out and vote Wildrose.

The party promises not to raise taxes and to balance the books by 2017 by reducing spending and by cutting excessive government management and administrative staff.

Hozack attacked the PC party and informed The Voice of PC back room deals.

He said, “The province had a secret deal with a golf course west of Calgary. It’s a private golf course and the PC party put $15 million into it.”

Hozack believes the PC party has an attitude of entitlement. He attacked the Progressive Conservative government’s debt and PC candidate opponent Richard Starke saying, “We found $100 million of inappropriate spending in Alberta Health Services. PC party members were buying

hockey season tickets on their Alberta Health Services credit cards. Richard Starke was in charge then and he did not get this stopped.”

Hozack promises voters, “We will have health care that works, we will end the entitlement and we will leave our province in a better fiscal state. We will balance the budget by 2017 without cutting taxes or hurting frontline services. Our figures add up.”

Danny Hozack, born and raised near Streamstown in Alberta, worked as a farmer all his life. He’s married with three children and has seven grandchildren and has been Chairman for the Economic Education Association of Alberta for the past 3 years.

When the painting of the furniture is complete, then the furniture is finished with a protective coating. Finish coatings are a basic top coat, a clear wax for fine furniture and a dark wax for antiquing. There is also a hard coat that is used for outdoor furniture or kitchen cabinets.

Prior to hosting the course I did a little research on chalk paint. The brand I liked the best is called American Paint Company. This is because the paint is made of all natural ingredients; it has no smell and no harmful chemicals or volatile organic compounds.

During my research I found that there are recipes for making your own chalk paint out of latex paint and plaster of paris, but there were several disadvantages to doing this. The finish of homemade chalk paint is prone to

chipping and it cannot be removed with a damp cloth or easily sanded to produce interesting finishes. My research also revealed that even the fabric upholstery on wood chairs can be painted, with stellar looking results.

I saw examples of old brass and hunter g r e e n l a m p s u p d ate d i n to s t y l i s h antique white lamps. Several people have successfully painted their upholstered fabric wing chairs, which really intrigues me.

A popular use of chalk paints is to refinish kitchen cabinets.

The most c ommon use of c halk paint is to paint regular wood furniture that needs an update with a fresh new colour and a stylish twist. The ideas are percolating and now I can’t wait to get started on some of my own projects with chalk paint.

The Art Of Taking A #Selfie

I often wonder how a perfectly respectable camera dodging introvert like me could have raised one of the all time great selfie posting maniacs to ever have graced Facebook.

It may just be a sign of the times since Twitter did coin 2014 as the year of the selfie. According to WIRED there are 79 million photos on Instagram alone that contain the #selfie. Other reports suggest the demographic taking all these shots are the Millennials, thereby underscoring the notion that this age group is obsessed with themselves.

My daughter has all the right moves when it comes to taking selfies; yes she is a Millennial. She has perfected, over countless hours, adjusting her device to the exact angle required to best showcase the classic duck lips shot.

Or there is her trademark “naturally surprised” selfie that reveals even though she has been caught totally unaware, she still manages to look perfectly marvelous at all times.

Speaking of looking marvelous, wouldn’t Fernando Lamas have loved the selfie?

There is no question he would have had

all the gear – filter, apps, and selfie stick. I can even picture him advertising the aforementioned accoutrement with the following slogan: “Walk #selfie and carry a big stick!”

The price of these sticks can range anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. I found one at the Dollar store right here in downtown Vermilion for just $7.

The Louvre and various sporting arenas have banned selfie sticks out of fear of unintentional poking. After all, nothing can come between a good selfie and a fabulous backdrop! Not even someone’s eyeball.

(Perhaps that is what the Mona Lisa has been smiling about this whole time.)

I must admit I have been in one group selfie with some of my oldest and dearest friends. It was the first time for all of us, (at least that’s what we told each other). To our credit, we did feel a healthy generational embarrassment associated with putting the camera on ourselves to take a picture of ourselves in a public place that was not even a famous public place (we were simply out for dinner).

We did draw some attention from the others diners, but only due to the fact that we couldn’t stop laughing at how each shot we took became progressively more

hideous.

We have known each other since high school so there were no holds barred when it came to picking each shot apart: “Wow, I knew your eyes were really close together but now it looks like you have just one…”

“When did that mole erupt on that side of your face?’

“Why are we all still friends?”

Had I known there was so much involved in taking these seemingly random shots, I would have asked my daughter for some serious selfie boot camp training.

And I’m sure she would have been happy to oblige – just as long as she was calling all the shots – taking all the shots – and in all the shots.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted Our AR assembly was on April 21.

The three Grade 1 classes sang a song and recited a poem, both on the theme of earth week. Mr. Faull and Mr. Harvey presented the Klondike Relay team with their standings and ribbons. We were told that Mr. Beecroft would still have to keep his beard, as the total points read through AR this month were 2206. The VES students have now read a total of 17 056.9 points to date.

On April 11 at 11 a.m. the Grade 4 and 5 students went to the Lakeland College Riding Arena to take part in the

ADM Ag Safety Day. The students were treated to a hot dog, cookie and juice box, and then cycled through several safety stations. The stations were electrical and fire safety, First Aid, canola safety, bike and ATV safety, and chemical safety. As the students left to come back to the school, they each received a bag of goodies. This was the second year of the Safety Day and it was excellent.

The week of April 20-24 was Earth Week. Each day at VES, we participated in different activities relating to this theme.

Monday involved cleaning up the playground and having a litterless lunch; on Tuesday, each class made a poster using only recyclable or reusable materials; we had lights out for a 40-minute period on Wednesday; Thursday, we were to buy

The Superintendent public speaking contest is happening again this year on April 30 at the Lakeland College Alumni Theater. The Grade 4-6 topics are: ‘A person I admire and why’ or ‘Why my sister/brother is like my dog/cat/pet’.

Before the actual competition, there was a speak-off at our school to decide who would represent VES. Raegan Selte, Madison Tovell and Owen Aitken were the grade finalists. We appreciate Vermilion Rotarians John Lunty, Rebekah Hiebert, and Dawn Riley for coming into VES on April 21 to judge these speeches.

Congratulations to Owen, who will represent VES on April 30.

Music Monday is an annual initiative that brings together thousands of musicians across the country to celebrate the gift of music in our lives, on the same day at the same time. We always participate on the first Monday of May. Please join us at 11 a.m. central time on May 4 at the tennis courts, as all Grade 1-6 VES students and 1-5 St. Jerome’s students join the thousands by singing “We Are One”.

Starke Puts Rural Alberta On His Radar In Dewberry Marie Conboy Reporter

PC candidate for Vermilion-Lloydminster Dr. Richard Starke visited the community of Dewberry on his election campaign, April 17.

“I have a soft part in my heart for this community,” Starke said, “It’s now 32 years since I started working as a veterinarian in Lloydminster. One of the commitments that I’ve always made, as MLA, when I was in cabinet and as Tourism Minister, is that rural Alberta and our small communities hold tremendous potential and they can’t be a forgotten part of our provincial fabric.”

A community member told The Voice in Dewberry, “We are very concerned for our health care access right now, with doctors coming and going with the current doctor situation in Vermilion, we have no doctor in Dewberry and in winter it’s difficult to travel and access services.”

Starke said, “The main concerns for communities like Dewberry includes

access to services like education and health care. I sure notice what is going on in these communities, it’s vital important. We found this out when we travelled the province with the rural health review.”

Dewberry community members raised their concerns about corporate taxes, health services, tobacco tax and the funding needed to finish the ongoing town hall construction. “We are at present $300,000 short and we hope to get it finished in two years.”

“Increases on corporate taxes right now would be a mistake in the economy we’re in, with a slumping economy and a collapse in oil prices, if we don’t have companies investing in Alberta, jobs disappear and we’re already losing jobs.

Everything that we can do right now to hang onto jobs and keep people working is what’s important right now,” Starke told Dewberry. “ O ur to bac c o t a x in creases are amongst the lowest in Canada and whenever we increase tobacco it is to deter young people from smoking. I understand that smoking is a choice, and I

respect that, but the fact is a big chunk of our health care costs are directly related back to the use of tobacco.”

Starke was assigned to carry out the full rural health care review by Premier Jim Prentice after Prentice was elected as leader last September.

“I had never met or spoke to Premier Prentice until out of the blue he called me up one night, a year ago in April, and we talked for an hour and a half. It became apparent to me, that this man really understands Alberta and rural Alberta.

Since that time, I’ve got to know him a lot better. He is a great leader and he knows what Alberta needs to get back on the right footing.”

Dr.Starke said he became aware of situations where people received worse medical care than an animal would have received working on the rural health care review and that he is very committed and promises to look after rural Alberta and secure the PC’s plan to work with all the departments of government should he be re-elected.

Baking Robots World’s Update

The Baking Robots represented Alberta at The Worlds VEX Competition in Louisville, Kentucky April 17 and 18. The boys played in 10 matches held over three days of competition at the Worlds Competition began with Rhys representing Team Canada in the parade of nations.

Immediately after, the boys headed off to the “pits” the 10x10 trade show booths assigned to each team for working on their robot and got ready for their first match.

They wound up with a 6 wins, 4 loss record which landed them in 23rd place overall.

There are currently over 12,000 teams of VEX registered in the world, and these boys landed in 23rd place. It was a fantastic learning experience for them, as well as for their coach Phoebe who had never had a team head to World’s before!

There was a trade show where the latest and greatest in the robotics world was set up - there were flight simulators set up by the US military and imagine their dismay when they finally got a chance to run over and try them - only to discover you had to

be 14 to try them out!

And then to end the competition, VEX hosted a team party at Kentucky Kingdom amusement park - for 15,000 students.

There were 1000 teams participating from 30 countries around the world at the championship. One of the challenges the boys had in this competition, is that their alliance teams did not always speak English but they had to communicate with them on strategy.

Each year, the game changes so that new challenges are presented so that the teams must engineer solutions. The unveiling of the new game was held at the competition and the boys are already excited and busy planning next year’s robot. I think we can expect some even bigger results from the boys in the future.The competition was broadcast online and the boys enjoyed reading all the cheers from back home while they were competing. They could not have done it without the support of this community and for that, we are all truly thankful.

It’s been a pretty wild ride this week for the parents as well as the kids. I’m exhausted and I wasn’t even there.

Presentation To The Vermilion Museum Marie Conboy Reporter

The Rotary Club presented a cheque for $5,000 to the Vermilion Heritage Museum on Friday, April 24. “We will be spending the money on repairing the roof.

Our roof has been leaking for a few years.

It’s important to preserve this museum, it belongs to the people of Vermilion,” said President of the Heritage Museum Jean Muire. Brenda Lee said, “It’s great to be a part of this project and to support our museum and support the community.

The Rotary is really committed to keeping the funds in our community. This was an extremely successful garage sale and the community support was overwhelming. We raised $16,000, which is a record for us in the last eight years the sale has been on-going.” The Rotary club also donated two items to the museum which were donated to this year’s garage sale.

Kathy’s Greenhouse Still Growing After 30 Years Shannon O’ Connor Reporter

Jason and Jullie Andersen, owners of Kathy’s Greenhouse, attribute their 30 year success and longevity in the business to hard work, quality products, running a clean operation, excellent customer service and learning a thing or two from the previous owner, Jason’s mom.

“We have been family-operated the whole time,” said Jason Andersen. Since taking over five years ago, Andersen said he and his wife have built on some of the things his mother started like Christmas giftware, ornaments, wreaths, arrangements and supplies.

“Christmas is now our second busiest season.”

The Andersen’s have also found a way to extend the season by growing vegetables like carrots, cabbage and beets which they can take to farmer’s markets and sell in January and February when their business is closed.

They have also added roughly five acres of vegetables on site, including tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, peas and corn and kohlrabi (a brassica vegetable that grows above ground like, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower), that should be ready to go by late summer/fall, with the exception of the cucumbers and tomatoes that will be ready by May/June.

“You name it, we grow it.” And that includes one acre of strawberries.

“We pride ourselves on bringing in different products to keep things fresh.”

Andersen said that the trend toward container gardening is continuing this year and he is seeing the demand for vegetable containers. Basically, these are like live salad bowls which can be planted with lettuce, small tomato plants, and herbs. “Then just clip and eat.”

But perhaps the biggest buzz this year is about the Ketchup ‘n’ Fries™ plant or the TomTato®. This tomato/potato combination allows the gardener to grow both plants together. Andersen has already put his order in for the highly sought after hybrid.

“The tomato is grafted onto the potato plant – tomato on top potato on bottom,” said Andersen. “The tomato and potato are from the same family – that way they can grow together.”

In celebration of their 30 years in business, Kathy’s Greenhouse will be having specials throughout the season and special weekend events. And, just like every Mother’s Day, they will be serving coffee and donuts again this year.

“My mom is still involved…she’s here everyday. I still have stuff to learn from her.”

St Jerome’s Spartan Olympics

St Jerome’s School held their Spartan Olympics on Friday, April 24. “The purpose of the event is to get higher grades to interact with lower grades,” said St Jerome’s teacher Allan MacMillan.

“We want the high school children to

be role models for the younger children.”

The Spartan Olympics event included many different activities designed to engage the students to work together as a team. Grade 12 students took lower grade students by the hand from task to task, as they competed together. “We try to find something for everybody and to help build a sense of community. It’s about team spirit and school spirit,” said

Mr.MacMillan. The students had four tasks each, some trivia, outdoors, cooperation activities and mathematical quizzes as they collected pieces of a puzzle along the way.

From speeches and talent show try outs to spectacular performances in badminton and volleyball, students artfully projected their abilities!

Junior high badminton players set the tone at the BTJHAA badminton finals tournament on April 21. Bringing home gold for were Hailey Fanjoy and Tyler Manchen (mixed doubles) and Kenedi Wood (girls’ singles). Kyle Kjenner placed 3rd for boys singles and Nicole Dennill and Jenna Bowman competed for girls’ doubles with some tough teams and scored some

Dewberry senior badminton had an excellent showing this year. Coach Dan Blatchford and team have attended six tournaments so far winning five out of a possible seven gold medals at Buffalo Trail playoffs and then won two gold medals and two silver medals at NorthEast Alberta Zone playoffs to move four groups on to the Provincial championship. Kyra Weidmark, Daneca Goldsmith, Kayla Roberts, Rebekah Surina, Lucas Dennill and Torin Johre have advanced onto the provincial round beginning May 1. Congratulations players and good luck!

Talents abound set the stage for the talent show try outs last week. Students presented many an act, from piano playing, to singing and even some art displays! Be on the look-out for the talent show evening, on May 7!

The melodies of our school are varied and abundant. Although they are not all perfect, it’s what defines our culture and crafts the atmosphere in our neck of the woods, building a most pleasurable and rewarding place to thrive!

VES Students Plant Space Tomatoes On Earth Day Shannon O’ Connor Reporter

To coincide with Earth Day, Grade 2 students at VES planted tomato seeds that were exposed to space-like conditions for a project launched in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) known as Tomatosphere®.

“This is about the sixth year we have been doing it at VES,” said Grade 2A teacher, Rebecca McCullough.

According to the Tomatoshphere’s website, there were nearly 18,000 classrooms across Canada and the U.S. that participated in the project in 2014.

“Almost every grade at VES is involved,” added McCullough.

The aim of the project is to determine what food would be suitable to grow in space as future missions to planets like Mars will be longer and the need to grow food will be crucial to the sustainability of these long-term space programs. Tomatoes are used because they germinate quickly and are easy to grow. (Heinz and

Heinz Tomato Seeds are also partners.)

The project guidelines actually recommends that you plant on a Wednesday, said McCullough. That way the students (especially when you’re dealing with a Grade 2 classroom), don’t have long to wait until they see results.

McCullough added that in her experience, she has seen “17 out of 20” of the seeds planted grow.

Each student receives two seeds, one from a control group (untreated) and one from a treated group (seeds that have been exposed to live or simulated space conditions). Neither the teacher nor the student knows which is which until the results have been entered online.

This year’s batch of seeds were treated in simulated space conditions and were contained for 34 days in a -80 C vacuum at the University of Guelph in Ontario (another project partner).

Not only are the kids “super excited about the thought of being able to grow these somewhere else,” said McCullough, “but the project hits several curriculum

outcomes. Almost every subject has something to do with it – we graph its growth, we write about it in a journal and science is the obvious connection and then the social (aspect), caring for the environment and tying it in with Earth Day.” “Last year’s seeds went out in space.”

The seeds McCullough referred to were among 600,000 that were retrieved from the International Space Station by Commander Hadfield in May 2013. They had been orbiting the earth since July 2012. The seeds were then distributed to the participating classrooms across Canada and the U.S., including VES. “I love it from an environmental perspective,” said McCullough. “I like them (students) to take the plants home and plant them in their own garden.”

FIRE HYDRANTS FLUSHING AND MAINTENANCE Starting May 11, 2015 and continuing until completed, the Town of Vermilion Transportation & Utilities Department will be carrying out the Spring Hydrant Maintenance Program.

Each spring and fall we flush out the water lines to clear them of any sediment or mineral buildup in the lines. Water moves through the lines at a very slow rate, which allows sediment and mineral deposits to build up in the line. Flushing removes these deposits by forcing the water through the lines at a high pressure rate, and, then it is released through the fire hydrants. After flushing, the hydrants are inspected to ensure proper operation in the case of an emergency.

We flush the lines during business hours to minimize disruption to your service. During the flushing process, residents and businesses throughout Town may experience a drop in water pressure or some discoloration in the water if the hydrant in the area is opened. This discoloration or cloudy water is a result of air in the lines; it is safe to drink and should clear up by allowing water to run for a short period of time. Town Council Meeting Update Marie Conboy Reporter

The Town of Vermilion held their regular meeting of council on Tuesday, April 21. Present were Mayor Bruce MacDuff, Councillors Richard Yac ey ko, Car o lin e M cAul ey, H ar p Khela, Greg Barr, Clint McCullough and Robert Pulyk and Town Manager Dion Pollard, Direc tor of Finance, Recording Secretary Erin Miller and Administration Denise MacDonald.

Under the planning and development committee report, the Council passed a motion to provide 100 per cent of

the funding for the construction of new pavement bet ween the Post Of fice and Co-op.

Under public safety and protection, Council members raised concerns about the speed limits in place on the main street in Vermilion and the stretch of road at the back of J.R. Robson School which does not have a 30km per hour speed limit in place. “ We don’t want a child get ting run over,” said Mayor Bruce MacDuff.

Council expressed their concerns to improve road traffic speed limits in the town of Vermilion and they agreed to the purchase of an advanced speedometer clock which records speed and evaluates statistics.

We are really amazed by the work the student participants produced this year.

Their ideas and their videos are really good. By taking their skills out of the classroom setting, students can gain an appreciation for where their skills can take them, and are encouraged to reach for their personal best.”

Skills Canada Competitions feature the talents of Alberta’s trade and technology students.

The event was hoste d by Sk ills Canada Alber ta. Regional Skills Canada Competitions (RSCC), and aims to connect students to local postsecondary and industry leaders.

There was a ceremonies presentation afterwards in the Lakeland College T h e at r e, w h er e t h e w i n n er s wer e awarded first, second and third places.

Successful students who placed at the RSCC will go on to compete in the Provincial Skills Canada Competition in May.

“I believe she was impressed with the event last year and asked if she could be a par t of it again,” added Berg.

Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce Office Manager, Michelle Feist said she is looking forward to Borrelli’s presentation since it deals with boosting confidence.

“It should be a good presentation.

I’m a people pleaser, so it will be good for me,” joked Feist.

“Other speakers have been selected based on evaluations over the years a n d H e a l t h a n d We l l n e s s a l w ay s seems to be of interest,” added Berg.

A lit tle retail therapy in bet ween presentations will also be in order as some of the vendors booked at the tradeshow include Fadz n Funks

Registrations are still being accepted for vendors, said Feist. “We are hoping for 20 this year.”

Berg added that networking is also a positive outcome of the show. “ The College looks at the event as a time for the female staf f from our campuses to get together; to get to know one another better and build strong bonds with the people we may only talk to or email during the year.

Berg added that communit y in general has also benefitted from the Conference.

“It has given us an opportunity to give back...we have supported in the past, Habitat for Humanity, The Crisis Line, Ovarian Cancer and this year we will be supporting Walking Through Grief Societ y...with the help of the vendors we have been able to donate in the neighbourhood of $3,000.”

Ms walker Lillian Hagen Eighty-eight year old walker Lillian Finken Hagen has raised $17,000 walking for the Multiple Sclerosis Society over the last 12 years. She will be taking part in the 5 km MS walk again this year on May 2, starting at the Bud Miller Park. Lillian is the oldest walker to have ever competed and she says, “I like to think that I’ll still be doing it when I’m 90.” Every year more than 40,000 Canadians in more than 160 communities across Canada support the MS Walk and raise vital funds for people living with MS.
