STEPS In The Right Directon

Although it would be next to impossible to count the exact number of steps the dancers from the 11 participating dance schools of this year’s thirteenenth annual STEPS Festival have taken toward their moment in the spotlight, one thing is certain, each and every step has counted.

Carmen Haslehurst of Dance Impressions by Ryan said when the dancers start out “They don’t know how beautiful they are. Year by year their confidence grows.

You can see it in the way they walk.”

STEPS is an acronym for Strengthening, Talent and Excellence through Positive Showcasing.

It is hosted by Dance Impressions by Ryan and the DI Society (a non-profit organization dedicated to funding travel, tuition and “anything that helps our dancers dance!”)

Included in this mandate is the “fabulous facility” of the Alumni Theatre at Lakeland College that perfectly showcases all the talent, said Haslehurst.

During the three day festival at the College, medals and scholarships are handed out to every dancer as well as a heaping dose of positive critiquing by a qualified adjudicator. This year’s adjudicator is Shauna Weaver who has over 20 years of professional teaching experience and has studied a multitude of dance styles including, Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip Hop and Musical Theatre.

Some of her accomplishments include winning awards for her choreography as well as contributing to and performing at the opening and closing of the Grey Cup and the Calgary Stampede.

During Friday’s Lyrical Solo numbers the nine girls who performed from Kitscoty Dance Academy, Georgina’s Academy, Dance Impressions, Norazz Dance Studio, Vegreville School of Ballet and Wilson School of Dance, were each awarded an achievement standing and received some tips on how to improve in all areas of their performance. Suggestions included every-

thing from costume selection to improving upper and lower body extensions as well as musical interpretation.

Rachel Weimann, a dancer with Dance Impressions, blazed on to the stage in a fiery red costume and gave a stunning performance to “All We Are”. She was awarded a gold standing for her efforts and was also named Most Promising in the PreAdvanced (7.5 to 9 years training) Lyrical Solo Category by Weaver.

In the Junior category with four years of dance experience under her belt, 8 year old Mystery Elliot from the Kitscoty Dance Academy took time out for a quick snack of cheese and crackers before her performance on Friday and said she liked to dance “because it is fun and it makes me healthy and strong.”

It seems the positive message of STEPS is definitely leading these dancers in the right direction, one step at a time.

Legends In The Making At Marwayne PBR 2015 Marie Conboy Reporter

Strobe lighting, a packed house, bull riding enthusiasts, and bull riders congregated at the Marwayne Arena on Saturday, April 11 to mark an exciting start to the fourth Marwayne Professional Bull Riding (PBR) comeptition.

Some of the best riders in the world came to compete in the adrenaline pumping, unpredictable and captivating eight second ride in which legends are made.

Thirty riders performed in all. Many riders hung on for the eight seconds and longer.

After the qualified eight second ride, each rider received a score. Judges watched for control and ability of the rider to successfully counter the moves of the bull. Three riders were hurt on the night but no one was seriously injured.

The champion and star of the night was Dakota Buttar, with two superb performances. Buttar said he was delighted with his win. “You have to keep practicing. I’ve gone to a few bull riding schools and that really helped improve my riding. I try not to worry about the dangers; it happens, but it will affect your riding if you start worrying about it. It would be my goal to get on to PBRs in the States.”

Event organizer and promoter Denton Edge said, “There was a super turn out.

Bull riders rode very well. All in all, it was a great show. Our winner Dakota Buttar was the Canadian champion last year in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA). He rides great and he’s always one to look for at the top.”

Bull rider Wyatt Gleeson, from Sundre Alberta, suffered a shoulder and arm injury on the night. Gleeson said, “I felt my ride went really well but when I went to get off, the bull turned back the other way and hit me in the arm. My whole arm went numb, I think it will hurt for a few days, but I’ll be back out riding again next weekend. I’ve got two pro rodeos and a bull ride to go to.”

This demanding and dangerous sport has a legendary history that is as rich and colourful in tradition as any other sport.

Making The Difficult Call

Alberta RCMP wants all Albertans to know that they have a critical role to play in identifying people who may be vulnerable to recruitment by terrorist groups. In many instances, it is those closest to a radicalized individual, or an individual undergoing radicalization, who witness the changes in the

individual’s behavior, beliefs, activities or topics of conversation that often accompany radicalization. While the RCMP acknowledges that it may be particularly difficult for friends, parents or family members to come forward to police, notifying authorities allows police to intervene at an early stage, before an individual has the opportunity to engage in violence which may harm members of the public or even themselves. Sup por t c oming from family, friends and the community for those who do bring their concerns to police is very important to this processand the RCMP will engage various supports that are appropriate to the people in need. As well, it is important for the public to consider the privacy

of the people involved in these situations.

“Making the call might be difficult, but not as hard as dealing with what might happen if you don’t pick up the phone,” Inspector John Baranyi, Officer in Charge of the RCMP ’s Inte grated National Se c urit y Enforc e ment Team in Alberta (INSET). “Early intervention is the only way to ensure that the individual gets access to the necessary support and assessment ser vices before they do something they can’t undo.”

A s p a r t o f i t s n at i o n a l s e c u r i t y mandate, the RCMP has developed initiatives aimed at mitigating and countering any threats to the security and safety of Canadians, their liveli-

hood, their property and critical infrastructure on the national, provincial and local community levels. At the same time, it must be recognized that protecting Canada’s national security requires the awareness and active engagement of citizens too, as it is a shared responsibility. “ Unfor tunately, radicalization is something that can happen in any family or community, so every Canadian has a responsibility to help the police make sure it does not lead to senseless violence,” saysInspector John Baranyi.

Assault on Police Officer On April 6, 2015, Vermilion RCMP m e m b e r s we r e c o n d u c t i n g s p e e d enforcement operations in the 5300 b l o c k o f 5 0 Ave n u e i n Ve r m i l i o n , Alberta. An RCMP member conducted a traf fic stop on a vehicle that had b e e n t r ave l l i n g 19 k m / h ove r t h e posted speed limit. Upon approaching the driver ’s side front window, t h e m e m b er wa s s pr aye d w i t h a n unknown substance believed to be pepper spray or bear spray. Luckily, the member did not sustain any injuries. The vehicle then fled from the scene at a high rate of speed towards Brennan Subdivision. A pursuit was declared and continued through Brennan Subdivision, the Provincial Park and eventually back onto Highway 41 southbound. The suspect vehicle was pursued until it got stuck in a farmer’s

field just off of Range Road 61 north of Tow n s h i p R o ad 5 0 0. T h e m a l e driver and a female passenger were taken into custody without further incident. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Stettler, Alberta. During t h e s e izur e of t h e ve h i c l e, p o l i c e located small amounts of marihuana and a substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine (crystal meth).

Also located in the vehicle was a stun gun disguised as a flashlight.

Pr i o r to t h e e n d of t h e p ur s u i t , speeds had reached 140 km/h on the rural roads. Traffic density in town at the time was light.

H ave yo u eve r thought about volunteering in an organization or just on your own in your community? Many people have but it is slowly becoming a dying activity, mainly because we are all so busy in our daily lives and think we do not have time to do so.

When we think of being a volunteer we often think of it as spending countless hours at an event or working in an organization. But really volunteering is any act in which we help our community. The definition of volunteer is: “a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking and a person who performs a service willingly and without pay.”

So, why should we continue to volunteer when our valuable time could be spent rela xing and doing nothing?

Volunteering has many benefits and we should encourage our children, especially, to volunteer even a couple hours a week. Volunteering can give you the opportunity to learn or develop new skills, Ghandi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” It’s never too late to open your mind and learn a new skill. It keeps your brain active and as the saying goes, if you do not use your brain, you lose your brain.

Another great reason to volunteer is to be a part of your community. Volunteering in the community gives us the opportunity to give back, pay it forward and help each other. You never know when you will need the support of your community in your life.

Just think of the many dif ferent people you could meet while doing volunteer work. Imagine helping a foreign person who has come to our countr y learn about our culture or helping them learn a new language. I

have met many immigrants who could not speak English well and it was very satisfying to help them improve their English skills. I also had the opportunity to learn a few new words in their language and some pretty fascinating facts about their culture. I have made some wonder ful friendships that I hope will last a lifetime.

Have you ever felt a little low on self-confidence? Volunteering is an awesome way to give you the needed boost to feel like you have accomplished a task and took the time and energy required to do so. Helping at an animal shelter, if you’re an animal lover, it can give a person such a sense of self-worth. Animals do not have a voice of their own, they cannot ask for the attention they crave, but after leaving a shelter where you know you have made a difference to such a defenseless life it can bring a sense of joy which often cannot be expressed in words. The feeling of personal accomplishment is the only reward you need.

We would like to take this opportunity to express a huge thank you to all the volunteers in our community. Without everything you do our children wouldn’t have the opportunity to play sports and keep active; our elderly wouldn’t see the cheery faces that they so very much love to see while in hospitals and long term care facilities. Without you our society would become a solemn place.

April sure has been indecisive to start, but all in all not so bad. I got a lot of spring stuff done this past long weekend, and also got to spend some quality time with family.

We even got a visit with momma Robin this past weekend, although she wasn’t singing her calming serenade this year. It sounded more like she was scolding the world.

I am not sure if she was scolding one of the farm kitties or if it was because she didn’t appreciate the new snow and colder weather; regardless it certainly

was awesome to see her so early.

Even though it was on the cool side the entire weekend, I fully expected to hear the loud frog song also. But there is standing water everywhere so it still may have a little frost underground.

It would have been surreal to see my first crocus, the first spring flower, at Easter. It certainly wasn’t for lack of trying.

However, we were just in the wrong area and terrain for the amazing crocus.

This past Easter long weekend was a perfect time to go looking for Easter eggs, and if we found some antler sheds; bonus! So I loaded up Miss Pickles and her side packs with four bottles of water, her folding dish, and some snacks etc.

Then we snuck away for a couple hours.

Now I know I said I would talk about

something else other than Miss Pickles… but in reality she is by my side in most of my outdoor adventures now, so naturally she has to be included.

As you know I have been training Miss Pickles with antler sheds since she was 5 ½ weeks old. This was going to be her big test, (I call antlers “bone”). So we headed to a bigger bush where I have a couple deer stands set up. When we got there I loaded up our packs and asked Miss Pickles “where’s your bone?” Off she went zig zagging in a blur. We didn’t get 75 yards from the truck and I could see her tossing the first antler shed around.

It was just a small antler shed from a younger mule deer, but it was her first.

After a big congrats, we headed deeper into the bush. After just about an hour of pushing hard bush, I was hoping the first antler wasn’t just a fluke.

Then I saw her waiting for me with her nose to the ground…it was a second find…an older shed. It was a couple years old, but a much bigger deer. After the big “Atta girl,” she deserved a snack. So I took off our packs, treated her to some dry spare ribs that she was crazy about, and a bottle of water in the dish she carried in the pack. I was very happy and proud of her work. We were just about halfway across the bush so we pushed on. It wasn’t long until I could see her occupied in a small gully where she found another set of antlers. This was from a young moose skeleton. I’m not sure how it met its demise but it was a real neat find. As I inspected the area and bones she ran up over the little hill and disappeared. I called to her and she didn’t come to the call so I went to see what she was up to. She was busy with her nose to the ground.

It was weird in this spot. There was moose hair all over and in the center of it was the jaw bone not of a moose, but

one from this year’s deer. She was more interested in a patch of grass 15 yards away, so I went over to look. She found a really nice fresh and good one. She got all kinds of loving for this one, (the pics don’t do it justice). It was from a palmed out antlered old mule buck. I couldn’t get my hand anywhere around the middle. I I was hoping to find the other side, so I got her moving. We circled the area and only 40 yards away in another direction, she found something again. When I got near I got pumped because I thought it was the other side, but on closer inspection I could see it was definitely last year’s shed and one could see it was from the same side. Both are from really good, but different deer, and both were less than 100 yards from one of my stands. Now I wanted to find both right sides of these two sheds.

However, we had walked almost three miles of hard bush and had some family commitments that evening so we had to make our way back. It was a great day and we had a nice little haul. Hunting antler sheds with a dog is so much easier.

Now we have something to look forward to next weekend; find the matching sides.

We will be happy with just that. We didn’t see a single Easter rabbit or even a sign of one. However, ironically, we did find some Easter eggs. They were three perfectly preserved egg shells from last year, most likely from a sneaky Easter duck…but the dang crows beat us to them.

When the Smoke Clears There’s no way to keep all your eggs in one basket if you find the eggs but realize you don’t have a basket.

Amended Version Of Bill 20 Given Third Reading AWNA Submitted

An 88 page amended version of Bill 20 (Municipal Government Amendment Act) was given third reading on Tuesday of this week. The amendm e nt s we r e n ot a p p l i c a b l e to t h e section (on legal advertising requirements) that AWNA has been discussing with the PC Government. We are still attempting to organize a meeting with Minister Diana McQueen.

Three methods of notification are now acceptable under the Act – newspaper adver tising, direct mail and municipal website.

The Municipal Government Amendment Act also gives municipalities the ability to pass an advertising bylaw, which could stipulate using the municipal government website to advertise public notices, provided that: council must be satisfied that the method the bylaw would provide for is likely to bring proposed bylaws, resolutions, meetings, public hearings and other things advertised by that method to the attention of substantially all residents in the area to which the bylaw, resolution or other thing relates or in which the meeting or hearing is to be held.”

In order to pass such an advertising bylaw, the municipality must hold a public hearing and adver tise that hearing through the three methods of notification stated above – newspaper advertising, direct mail and municipal website.

It would appear that the real battles

on this are going to be fought at the municipal level, since municipalities will still need to advertise legal notices in community newspapers unless they pass a bylaw giving them the ability to skirt this requirement.

The per tinent sections of the act appear below: (2) Notice of the bylaw, resolution, meeting, public hearing or other thing must be: (a) published at least once a week for 2 consecutive weeks in at least o n e n ew s p a p e r o r o t h e r p u b l i c a tion circulating in the area to which the pro p osed bylaw, resolution or other thing relates, or in which the meeting or hearing is to be held, or ( b) m a i l e d o r d e l i v e r e d t o e v e r y residence in the area to which the proposed bylaw, resolution or other thing relates, or in which the meeting or hearing is to be held.

NEW(c) published on the municipality’s website, or NEW(d) given by a method provided for in a bylaw under section 606.1.

(3) A notice of a proposed bylaw must be advertised under subsection (2) before second reading.

57 Advertisement bylaw: 606.1 (1) A council may by bylaw provide for one or more methods, which may include electronic means, for advertising proposed bylaws, resolutions, meetings, public hearings and other things referred to in section 606.

(2) Before making a bylaw under subsection (1), council must be satisfied that the method the bylaw would

provide for is likely to bring proposed bylaws, resolutions, meetings, public hearings and other things advertised by that method to the at tention of substantially all residents in the area to which the bylaw, resolution or other thing relates or in which the meeting or hearing is to be held.

(3) Council must conduct a public hearing before making a bylaw under subsection (1).

(4) A notice of a bylaw proposed to be made under subsection (1) must be advertised in a manner described in section 606(2)(a), (b) or (c) or by a method provided for in a bylaw made

under this section.

(5) A notice of a bylaw proposed to be made under subsection (1) must contain (a) a statement of the general purpose of the proposed bylaw, (b) the address or website where a copy of the proposed bylaw may be examined, or (c) an outline of the procedure to be followed by anyone wishing to file a petition in respect of the proposed bylaw.

(6) A b y l a w p a s s e d u n d e r t h i s section must be advertised.

Memories Of Camping Franklin Wolters Columnist

To d a y i n m y d e n t i s t ’s c h a ir, a s I r e l a xe d b et we e n the efforts of having my teeth checked, I was admiring a picture on the wall of a tent camp that pictured an old canvas tent with a light inside. There close by was a canoe pulled up on a shore of a lovely body of water with evergreen trees bordering it. It just looked so inviting!

Many memories came flooding back and I could almost smell the campfire smoke and taste the coffee. I don’t guess we didn’t just go camping for camping’s sake, it was usually a by product of a fishing or hunting foray.

Most of my early day camping was in a simple canvas tent that had no floor and in early times too, there were no air mattresses to go flat either. I didn’t at first have a fancy sleeping bag or such at all.

One fishing trip in the early times to Moose Lake we ended up in a pillow brawl that kept us unsettled and sleepless until almost dawn. The mosquitoes got more than a little involved, so the next day when the fish were biting we were almost all sleeping as we trolled along, hoping the fish would

awaken us when they bit!

My Norwegian brother-in-law used a whole pound of Nabob coffee in our big granite coffee pot that I’m sure you could have stood a spoon up in like syrup!

I know folks when you talk of camping, “Roughing it,” like they say only eve r s e e m to r e m e m b e r t h e h ar d g r o u n d, c o l d m o r n i n g s, b u g s a n d smoky campfires and never mention t h e h au nt i n g c a ll of l o o n s n ear by and just knowing you were in wild unspoiled country and that adventure would soon be knocking on your door.

I’ve been in tents when it rained hard for days at a time and even snowed on hunting trips a few times. A little less than thrilling but made you really appreciate a good fire!

One time sheep hunting along the Blackstone river, we were advised that grizzlies had been seen close by.

One of the gents who had endured my snoring a couple of nights commented that no self respecting grizzly would come near us with all that racket going on!. A couple times I’ve had black bears standing watching us cooking and get ting a lit tle brave. That can sure get the day off to a good start.

We had a tent camp at a fly in lake in far Nor th-east Alber ta. We were warned about bears and advised to have a rifle along just in case. The

only “bare” we saw was when we were taking a nude dip in a shallow corner of the lake close to camp. There was a rock bottom and it was like a nice bathtub. There is a d efinite ar t to setting up a camp and I had the privilege of camping with several artists who really could. One was my own son, Jim, who made several fishing camps in remote parts of the county.

Seemed like magic and there we were all set for the night and a day of fishing in the morrow. We never had much lu c k fi s h i n g, b u t t h e m e m or i e s of spending that time with Jim will always be so precious to me. Yes, camping is the maker of memories and the camaraderie is the real prize of the whole endeavour. I think now of the camping trip along the Grizzly Bear Coulee and the time spent with two city greenhorns. Memories to last a lifetime.

Any more now I don’t know if my old bones would stand sleeping on the ground and trying to digest food that was raw and burnt at the same time.

Now we have foam rubber mattresses and down sleeping bags that could be made comfortable with the right occasion, but, let’s see if we can get the new camping style straight.

A new trailer or camper complete with a fridge, pressure water system and a flush toilet and shower.

can make real home cooked meals.

Ye a h, r e a l l y r o u g h i n g i t . Yo u s e e these rigs parked everywhere and you would be hard pressed to ever find a campground with an old canvas tent anywhere, how quaint! But you know I think of so many places I’ve camped and enjoyed the circumstances that in t h o s e d ays c o u l d n’ t h ave b e e n reached pulling a trailer of any kind, maybe a 4x4 pickup and camper, but you know a lot of adventure comes from knowing that between you and the wilderness is only a thin skin of canvas. Makes you feel like a sacrificial lamb when you hear what might be a prowling bear or a close by howl of a wolf. Just brings back all those memories of hearing rain on canvas and the gladness of a warm fire!

Starting A Conversation

A few readers have taken time to respond thoughtfully to columns I’ve written for The Voice over the past few years. Some write to me through the paper. Others have telephoned. Many comments are shared in person. Some have been brief, while others have developed into lengthy discussions. There have been compliments and there have been criticisms. All have been welcomed.

Recently, a reader sent an email to The Voice, addressing no one in particular but making reference to one of my columns. It wasn’t a Letter to the Editor, just a message forwarded to us by a reader wanting to express, among other things that I didn’t speak for “the rest of us”.

I’ve read that message over a few times during the past couple of weeks. I am not omniscient, not even particularly privy to what anyone anywhere might be thinking on any given subject at any given moment.

Yet, at least one reader read a column, and was affected enough to write in order to declare that I didn’t speak for “the rest of us”, whoever that group might include.

Pause. I had to go back and see how it was possible that I might unwittingly be coming across as a spokesperson for the masses. Objectivity is definitely a challenge when it involves reading through your own writing but it’s worth attempting if you care about the message.

I think I discovered what might have been interpreted by our reader as authoritarian-speak. In my column of March 23rd, I added (aka most of us) after the word Opposition in a line referring to the Conservatives’ relentless display of disre-

spect during Parliamentary procedure. The role of the Opposition is to hold the presiding Government to account. To clarify, the Opposition asks the questions that we, the public, might have about any Government actions or inactions, as the case may be.

Further, it’s a fact that the present Conservative Government rose to majority status in 2011 with a mere 39.62 per cent of the popular vote. My admittedly obscure assertion in brackets was intended to reflect that, based on published statistics, “most of us” are not found among that 39.62 per cent but rather in the remaining, larger group represented collectively by the general Opposition.

A column is written by a single person.

Its content is custom built, shaped by the writer. By default, it will reflect and explore the writer’s interests, curiosities, and most certainly, opinions. Hopefully, if we’re adept enough we can create, through a combination of writing style and chosen subject matter, content that interests some of the people some of the time. If we’re fortunate enough to be read, that’s gratifying. If readers care to respond to what we’ve written with their own thoughts on any given subject, that’s definitely a bonus.

For this writer, the best news I can receive is that something I’ve managed to set out in a semi-coherent weekly column has started a conversation. It’s encouraged you to think, to ask questions. It may even entice you to find out more. But I cannot speak for you nor would I ever presume to do so. You have your own opinions, your own passions, values, perceptions, alliances, and aspirations. Most importantly perhaps, you have your own voice. I hope you use it well. I hope you use it more to initiate productive discussion than to silence the voices of those with whom you do not agree.

What once was the domain of grandma’s kitchen is now rediscovered for its heath and healing benefits. People are currently lining up in downtown New York to buy a cup of soothing bone broth. Quite simply, bone broth is made from the boiling of bones. You may be wondering why anyone would go to this trouble, when you can just buy broth in a carton. The answer is that the broth that you purchase in a carton does not contain the same abundance of nutrients as homemade broth, and the fact that it does not gel in the refrigerator tips you off that store

bought is a nutrient inferior product. Homemade bone broth contains calcium, magnesium, collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, glycine and many more nutrients. Its nutrient list reads like the who’s who of nutrition. A good bone broth brings healing to the digestive system and by healing this system, immunity can be boosted.

Chicken soup is a popular home remedy for a cold. Bone broth is beneficial to the joints, and for beautiful hair, skin and nails.

Bone Broth If you have a roast chicken or turkey, the bones can be saved to be boiled to produce a delicious broth. Place the bones in a pot and cover with water and boil for several hours. Add a few tablespoon of vinegar or several tablespoons of pickle juice. The

vinegar is an important part of the recipe that helps to pull the valuable minerals from the bones. You can also place the bones, water and vinegar into a crock pot and allow it to cook all day and all night.

For added nutrition and flavour add the following largely chopped vegetables: one onion, one or two carrots and a few stalks of celery. You can also add several cloves of garlic. You can season the broth with just a few bay leaves. My grandmother always made a spice bag that was boiled in the pot and released wonderful aromatic smells and flavours. The spice bag was made of several layers of cheese cloth or a single white piece of cotton that was filled with basic pickling spice and tied with a piece of string. When the broth is done, season

with additional salt and pepper, to suit your taste. Using iodized sea salt is always best, because it is full of beneficial minerals.

If you are making a beef bone broth, then first roast the bones until browned. This step will give your broth a rich, beefy flavor and colour. Place the roasted bones, sufficient water, vinegar and the above mentioned vegetables in either your pot or slow cooker and cook for an extended time. With both the poultry broth and the beef bone broth, you will want to strain the broth when you are finished cooking. This broth can be drank from a mug or made into a healthful soup with the addition of your choice of vegetables and meat. A good bone broth will gel when it is refrigerated.

Mannville School News

Susan Obrigewitch, Mannville School Submitted

April 12 to 18 is National Volunteer Week and we want to thank all of the amazing volunteers that we have on a daily basis in our school. Mannville School volunteers donate their time to help with activities such as cooking hot lunches, helping in the classrooms and attending field trips. We can’t be appreciative enough of volunteers giving of their time and energy to help make our school run smoothly. As a little token of our thanks we will be sending home a gift to each of our volunteers throughout the week.

We h ave r e c e nt l y e m b ar ke d o n two new recycling programs. We are now accepting old printer and toner c ar tridges as well as used bat teries. Feel free to send them with your child or drop them off at the school.

We will recycle them for you and keep them out of our local landfills. What a great way to show our students the importance of being environmentally conscious.

The Grade 5 class has almost completed their Sur vival Swimming pr o g r a m at t h e Ver m i l i o n Aq u at i c Centre. There is one more day of the program after Easter break and then it is finished. They have enjoyed swimming and had lots of fun experiencing going into the water with their clothes on! They have also enjoyed finishing up their novel study Underground to Canada. The last Friday in March the class got to experience their first «Flashlight Friday”, where they got to read their novel in the dark using a flashlight. It was a pretty neat reading

experience for them.

The Grade 6 class have completed a really cool unit on “Quick Draw” in ar t, and the students have enjoyed showing off their talents by drawing everything from cartoons, to animals, to action figures. The Evidence and Investigations unit in Science is well under way, and it will continue after Easter along with our Language Unit called A Shiver of Mysteries!!! Our Grade 6 class will soon be professional detectives!!!!!

In Grade 7 and 8 phys ed they have been working on badminton skills and yoga. Additionally, they have been collec ting data about their fitness levels to compare with other schools in the school division. Our students did fitness testing in areas of flexibility, core strength, upper body strength, cardio (endurance), and leg strength.

We will do these fit tests again at the end of the school year so students can gauge their improvements from our fitness training.

Grade 9 students joined the Grade 2 class for a science lesson. They helped the Grade 2’s make Oobleck, which acts like a liquid when being poured, but also like a solid when a force is acting on it. You can grab it and then it will ooze out of your hands.

Make enough Oobleck and you can even walk on it!

Mrs. Kerri Lorenson, VIBE Coach, has opened up the gym one day a week at noon for a VIBE ‘elementary yoga’ lunch hour. The students play several yoga games and get to show off their flexibility while participating!

Lakeland Receives Funding From NSERC To Take Research To The Skies

L a ke l a n d C o l l e g e i n Ve r m i l i o n , Alber ta received word last week it will receive $67,085 in federal funding to purchase a research tool that has applications in agriculture, energy, environmental sciences and fire and emergency services.

The new funding comes from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) C olleg e and C o mmu nity Innovation (CCI) program. The Applied Research Tools and Instruments Grant will allow the college to purchase an unmanned aerial vehicle system (UAS) equipped with image acquisition and processing technologies. A UAS is the combination of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) plus camera payload and image processing software.

UAS to o l s h ave r e c e i ve d w i d e spread uptake by police agenc ies for crime scene visualization, search and rescue, and tactical operations.

There is huge potential for these tools to advance precision agriculture by providing timely, non-invasive surveillance and scouting of crops at a low cost, says Josie Van Lent, dean of L ake l a n d ’s S c h o o l of Ag r i c u l tur a l Sciences.

Colour-infrared photography can provide important information about crop growth, health and damage from pests or disease. A UAS will allow this data to be collected more frequently and at high spatial and temporal resolution.

“This is very exciting for our college, our students, and for the agriculture industry in our region,” says Van Lent.

“Precision agriculture is reliant on data collection. UAVs enable frequent nondamaging and whole-crop scouting, which can give producers better information to make informed decisions about crop management. I am excited about the hands-on opportunities our students and researchers will have to explore how these technologies will impact the future of agriculture.”

“This research tool will open new ways for our students and faculty to interact with industr y and allow our stu d ent s to l ear n a b out em er g ing techniques and technologies that will impact a broad array of disciplines,” says Lorne MacGregor, director of applied research and commercialization. “With this equipment our environmental students will be able to explore wildlife habitats in ways we never thought possible. Thermal imaging will allow us to conduct research in areas related to fire fighting and other emergency services as well as energy usage and conservation. The opportunities here are really limitless.”

Lots Of Laughs And A Love Struck Moose At Kitscoty Dinner Theater Marie Conboy Reporter

The Kitscoty Dinner Theater opened to an excited crowd on Friday night, April 10.

The audience sipped on moose themed cocktails surrounded by an indoor setting of woodland and trees. The Kitscoty Community Hall which was unrecognizable, transformed into the Dead Moose Lodge set in the Rocky Mountains in 1883.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious homemade dinner before the play, cooked by local volunteers. The cast of 15 played out their characters including the villain, a damsel in distress and the famous love-starved moose.

Betty Evans, who played Granny Fanny the 86 year old spit fire said, “It’s been a barrel of fun to play Granny Fanny. We’re a close knit group. We’ve all been acting for a few years. It’s a fun event for the community and it’s great to raise funds for our beautiful hall.”

Producer of the production Brian Hunter said, “We chose to purchase this play, ‘She was only Marginally Modest,’

by American playwright Vern Harden, because everyone felt it was a super comedy and a good fit.”

The preparation for the show involved the cast practicing every Wednesday night since January with a lot of time generously donated by the volunteers, cooking, preparing, and helping out with

the many details like making the moose themed cocktails.

Dean Hitz who played the part of Judge Dury McBride said, “It’s such a great comedy, and it’s great to see people just about falling off their chairs laughing.

Over the weeks leading up to the production we got together and figured out how our characters should sound.” Hitz said he got inspiration for his character from Boss Hogg out of The Dukes of Hazzard.

Hitz also said there i s an adre n alin e rush you get from live per forming.

“Once you hit the stage and there’s a n au d i e n c e, i t s

full steam ahead. The crowd is different every night, one night they laugh at one thing and the next night they’ll find something totally different funny.”

The director was Colleen Hoegl and most of the costumes were designed by Gene Hunter.

Don’t worry if you missed last week’s production, you can still catch the show again this coming weekend April 17 and 18.

WE CELEBRATE VOLUNTEER WEEK Do You Know Someone Making A Difference In Your Community?

Canadians are well known all over the world for their reputation and genuine willingness to help and volunteer. Studies have revealed that 90 per cent of Canadians think it’s important to give back, and over half volunteer their time, with almost 60 per cent volunteering at least once a week or more.

This week is volunteer week and we acknowledge the wonderful volunteers here in the Vermilion community. Our volunteers help out with local youth groups, run festivals, serve meals and clean up afterward. They help out at the senior centre, sort items from the food and clothing banks, help out at the hockey arena, and remove trash from the Town’s streets. Even simple tasks such as shoveling snow from a neighbour’s driveway or sweeping leaves for a

senior, goes a long way. Volunteering is an act of kindness and it speaks volumes.

We all know someone filled with genuine goodness that makes a difference in our community.

Volunteer work is important not only to

individual volunteers but to Canadian society as a whole. The 2011 United Nations State of the World’s Volunteerism Report said that, “Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and reciproc-

Girl Guide Fundraising The Vermilion Voice had a visit from the Vermilion Girl Guides on Wednesday, April 8 as they were out selling Girl Guide cookies as part of a fundraiser for two separate trips they have planned. Twenty-five per cent of the funds raised from the sale will go to fundraising for the club. Grace Fluney will be attending a trip to Europe during the summer of 2016 and Emily Fluney along with Emery Zayac will be heading to Ottawa in the summer of 2017. Steve Dawson is a multi award winning musician and producer; he has worked with an inspiring array of artists and in a variety of styles and settings. He spent 20 years performing and producing music from Vancouver before he moved to Nashville in 2013. Steve has an endless stream of award winning musical output, he has produced and played on more than 80 albums since the turn of the millennium, seven of which have won Juno Awards. Steve’s multi-faceted career has brought him all over the world to many international festivals, working on the stage and in the studio with an extensive cast of musicians. He is said to be one of the hardest working musicians Canada has ever produced.

Jim Byrnes has been on the blues highway for 45 years. He started singing and playing blues guitar at age 13.

His first professional gig was in 1964.

Over the years he has had the great good fortune to appear with a virtual who’s who of the blues, from Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Taj Mahal and Robert Cray. Reviews say that, “The sheer joy you can hear in the music Jim Byrnes creates is the real reason to celebrate. Jim Byrnes is a living musical treasure.”

The Vermilion Folk Club, founded in 199 6, is a completely volunteer run, non-profit society dedicated to the promotion of live music in the Vermilion area. You don’t have to be a Folk Club member to attend any of the events. The Legion Hall provides a rela xed set ting and comfor table atmosphere. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the live music and superb talent. Tickets are on sale now at the Vermilion Credit Union for $20 and $10 for students.

National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week Marie Conboy Reporter

This year’s National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness will take place all across Canada April 19 to 25. The Canadian Transplant Association will be celebrating more than 25 years of promoting organ and tissue donation across Canada. There is a newly formed regional division of the Canadian Transplant Association in Lloydminster.

Regional co-coordinator Donna Lorenz says, “We are so excited to finally accomplish this in hopes of being able to create a greater awareness to organ and tissue donation. With our Awareness week approaching, the need for organ, tissue donors holds no borders. We are urging people to sign up online. Our purpose is to create awareness of that need.”

Everyone is invited to the City Hall in Lloydminster April 20 at 11 a.m. when Mayor Rob Saunders will make the procla-

mation. “We will celebrate afterwards with a BBQ by donation to follow. Come, let us tell you how one donor can save up to eight lives and improve as many as seventy-five more,” said Lorenz.

If you want to get involved and become an organ donor, this simple act could mean the greatest gift for someone who needs a second chance at life. All residents in Alberta have to do is sign up online. Residents of Saskatchewan need to get a red sticker for their health care card.

Lorenz says, “In your lifetime, you are more likely to need a transplant than you are to have one. 4000 Canadians are waiting for a donation.” This is an opportunity for you to make a difference. VIBE Coaches Shawna Craig and Laryssa Speck will host after school sessions once a week to assist grade 6 students in learning/practicing study skills in preparation for their Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) and to assist them with the transition to junior high school. Study Hall will take place

on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 on April 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13 (2p.m. to 3p.m. as it is early dismissal), and 20. There will be six sessions in total to cover the four main subjects and have two classes to review for exams/essays. Parents are welcome to attend as well. being great leaders and role models for the younger students. In March, Vibe members also made a special craft to spread some cheer at the hospital. They made monster bookmarks that were delivered to patients.

These students will also be working on a special project for the Mental Health Art Gala coming up in May. The Vermilion Triathlon Club will once again be a part of the VES after school club options. Beginning in April, students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of triathlon training and prepare for the Vermilion RockSolid Triathlon should they chose to participate in this event on June 14. Students can come to practice to try a tri after school from 3:40 to 4:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning April 14 and ending on June 12. Swim dates have tentatively been booked for some Friday swims as well. If you are interested, your child will need a permission form signed prior to participation, as it is an after school activity that will require your child to leave the school grounds at times. More information will be available on the permission form.

Kitscoty 4H Beef Club Report Club Reporter Joey Eddleston Submitted

The Kitscoty 4H beef club has had a busy March. All members have been looking after their projects at home, and many have attended district and regional activities. We had a team of four members from the club go to judging at Lakeland College’s Western Canadian Judging on March 13.

Jessica Gauthier, Shea-Lyn Eddleston, Justine Eddleston, and Cheyenne Porter represented the club and did relatively well judging everything from beef and dairy cows to swine and goats. Shea-Lyn finished high enough to be invited to go to 4H provincial judging this summer.

On March 21 five members attended district curling in Vermilion. This is a fun event that mixes all the children from different clubs to make teams. Three Cities 4H Multi Club hosted the event and everyone had lots of fun and we all came home with some good prizes and new friends.

Our district, Vermilion River, was host to the NE Regional Spring Fling this year.

Some of our leaders and older members were part of the committee organizing the event. The committee came up with a Survivor theme and the overnight camp for intermediate members was held at the Clandonald Hall on March 27 and 28. We had three senior members attend and help out as junior staff and four members sign

up to attend. There were 60 children registered for the camp from all the NE region.

We made survivor buffs and had a dance on the Friday night, than Saturday was filled with a variety of activities from “Survivor” challenges, to crafts, obstacle course, and a hayride. The Clandonald fire department also held a demonstration and relay race for us. Thanks to all the committee organizers, the Clandonald community, and all the clubs in the district that helped out to put on this camp for us. I know that I had a great weekend there.

On the weekend of March 27 & 28, i nter m e diate members enjoyed Spring Fling hosted by the Vermilion River District Council at Clandonald, Alberta. The theme was “Survivor” complete selfmade survivor buffs. In total there was 60 members, not including the senior members that came to help counsel.

Activities included decorating eggs,

c u p c a ke s , m a s k m a k i n g , m a k i n g string mache balls, and constructing tin can lanterns. There was a dance, obstacle course, horse drawn wagon ride, and shooting water through a real fire hose.

Members from our club that attended were Maranda Westergaard, Tara Martin, Myranda Lawrence and Megan Krys.

Senior members that helped were Kaylie Krys, Michaela Westergaard, Devon Lawrence and Julia McCrae.

Other artists worked in mediums that were both original and environmentally friendly. Upcycled clothing made from recycled materials and clutch purses made from discarded candy wrappers were proudly on display by their respective exhibitors.

The art of dance was also well represented by the Promin Vegreville Ukrainian Dance group as they took to the floor in a flurry of colour and covered it from one end to the other with their vigorous traditional dance moves.

The Cowboys and Cowhorses show and competition was held Friday, April 10, at Lakeland College Equine Centre indoor riding arena in Vermilion.

The day started with classes in Open Ranch Cutting, Cowboy Cutting, Cowboy Cowhorse, Ner vous Novice Ranch Cutting, Nervous Novice Cow Horse and Horse and Stockdog trials.

The program for the day is produced by the Lakeland College Western Ranch and Cow Horse program.

Emily Ireland, a student on this year’s

Lakeland college Western Ranch and Cow Horse program and show participant on Friday said, “Everyone starts in the fall and each bring their own horse.

There were 22 of us in the program this year. The course focuses on horse training. We also study cattle diseases and beef production. I really enjoyed the course; it’s so diverse with practical learning. The employment opportunities from the course are endless. I’m interested in working in horse training now and I have some interviews lined up.”

Show participant and student Kyran McGillion said, “In the horse world you never stop learning and it gives us basis

to do traditional cowboy jobs. Today really gives us great experience in the show world and at performing.”

The Ranch Horse performance took place in the evening with Open Cow Horse, Ranch Sorting and Ranch Doctoring. Spectators and enthusiasts watched on and enjoyed some lively and skilled performances.

Student and participant Jeff Diment said, “I’ve spent a lot of time in the Yukon and I spent a lot of time working on ranches in BC. If you need to doctor an animal out on the ground where you could be two days away from a pen, you’ve got to go out and rope it and lay it down. So

the skills we’ve learned here are really useful. As our instructors say, you do it because you can’t stand to do anything else. I always wanted to cowboy.”

Vests were awarded to aggregate winners (Cutting and Cow Horse) in each division, as well as the stockdog class.

The high point team entered in both ranch rodeo events also won vests. The competition was held in association with the Working Cowboy Horse Sale which was held Saturday, April 11 in the College’s Equine Centre. See next week’s issue for winner updates.
