Vermilion Wellness Cooking Club Chili Cook Off

The students of Grades 5 to 9 held their cooking club chili cook off last Tuesday evening at J.R. Robson School. Parents and students gathered after school in the training room for a great feast.

There were six judges invited to t a s te a n d g i ve fe e d b a c k o n e a c h chili dish. Judges commented that some dishes were a little spicier and hotter than others. The judges then voted and group four were the chosen The Students preparing their dishes.

The menu also included black bean brownies, whole wheat pasta, and Caesar salad with homemade dressing. All of the food was cooked and prepared by the children. They each put a lot of effort into preparing and each student invited a guest along to taste their meal after everything was ready.

Vermilion Music Festival 2015 a Great Success from the President Piano, strings, voice, and speech ar ts – it was all there to make this year’s festival a resounding success.

Adjudic ator s Diana Wiens, Elaine D u n b a r, a n d L a r r y S c h r u m u s e d their impressive knowledge and skills to encourage and teach each participant.

Audience members were treated to the best that each per former could of fer, regardless of age and skill level. This was a week of being introduced to the talent and dedication of so many young musicians and speech artists, who were applauded n o t o n l y f o r t h e i r q u a l i t y p e r f o rmances but also for their persever- Phoenix Wilson with her poem ‘Mummy slept Madeline Ratte on violin.

Roar Lacrosse Open House

Roar Lacrosse held its open house on March 30 and April 1 for its Tykes (aged four to eight), Novice (aged nine and ten) and Peewee (aged ten and eleven) divisions and for its Bantam and Midget division on March 31. The purpose of the open house is to give individuals the opportunity to discover the g ame of L acros se and d e c i d e whether they would like to register for the season.

Times Are Changing Lorna Hamilton Editor

Due to the drastic drop in oil prices everywhere you go you hear the same thing over and over like a song stuck on repeat.

Last week while I was sitting in the waiting area at a specialist clinic in Lloydminster, the office was filled with other patients and the focus of conversation was oil prices and the layoffs that have followed them.

One lady as she sat there with her children spoke of how two of her family members have been laid off from the patch. Quickly, the gentleman sitting alongside of her chimed in and spoke of his situation and how he had accepted a decrease in work hours so he could hopefully avoid receiving the dreaded pink slip. Another person talked about having to sell his truck and look for a different position with another company

as a driver because his truck had been cut from the company he was hauling for. You could hear the frustration in their voices and feel the pain which they felt.

Times are definitely changing within our province. A province which once had people from all over our country and other countries coming to for work, is now a province in which people are being laid off each and every day.

Businesses are doing what is needed to keep afloat during this downward spiral in oil prices. We all know that cutting jobs is the biggest way to reduce expenses and while many people are angry and upset about being laid off, the business has to do whatever is necessary. Hiring freezes have been implemented in many companies and finding a new job is becoming increasingly difficult.

In the last couple months alone I have had numerous friends lose their job and, in doing so, have to look for work in different parts of the province where the

effect of the oil prices are not hitting as hard as they are here in Vermilion and surrounding areas.

The ripple effect which I spoke about in a previous editorial has since changed into a tsunami effect. People who are not directly affected by oil prices such as oil haulers and other businesses directly linked to the patch will also be wondering if they too will soon lose their job as the government handed down the 2015 budget.

The Alberta Government has to do what is necessary to try and balance the budget and in doing so, it is a guarantee, job loss is inevitable. Taxes will increase for anyone who is making over $100,000 and a new health care premium will be implemented on those who make over $50,000. There will be a tax increase on gas, cigarettes and alcohol, which may not be a completely bad thing as some people may make healthier choices when they do not want to pay the extra bucks for a pack of cigarettes or case of beer. Cuts will be

made in health care and the list does go on, way to long for me to list in a short editorial but I think you get the jest of what is going on.

The questions are; has the way the Alberta government spent during the good times when revenues from oil seemed to be a never ending thing and put them in the situation they are in?

This year it is estimated that the Alberta government will have a deficit of $5 billion, could this have been avoided? Is our dependence on oil revenue become an addiction that needs to be broken in some way? Should our government stop speculating that they will always have oil revenues? Premier Jim Prentice said, “We should treat them as a legacy rather than becoming addicted to them as operational dollars.” I think he is right in saying that.

Times are changing in Alberta. Can we adjust to how it’s going to be? With time and patience and ingenuity we can, it’s a province that can and will bounce back.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor A ground breaking Ceremony for the rebuilding of E.H. Walter School in Paradise Valley is April 13 at 11a.m. There will be members of Buffalo Trail Public Schools, as well as members of the County of Vermilion River and the Community Fundraising Group.

As you may know, the community wanted a larger gym in the new school to be used for functions such as weddings, plays, funerals, etc. The new school plan had a gym that was smaller than our current

gym, plus there was no stage. The community took it upon themselves to fundraise to expand the gym, bringing it from 400 square meters to 650 square meters with a 50 square meter stage. This came at a cost of $1,360,000.

The community went to the County of Vermilion River and asked for a debenture to be added to their land taxes to cover a portion of the amount, and the County agreed to a total of $750,000. They also gave a County of Vermilion River Grant of $50,000. We put together a Community

Fundraising Committee to take on the task of raising the rest of the funds.

The committee went out and has been seeking donations from corporations, local businesses, and community members. We are currently sitting at $1,289,855.50, which is an incredible testament to our community! There have been many generous local businesses and corporations, and a large percentage of the money raised has been donated by Paradise Valley community members, farmers, and small businesses.

I am so proud to be a part of Paradise

Valley, and this has been just another great testament that this community can do great things!

Dear Editor, After attending the meeting at the Seniors Centre regarding Dr. Maulud on March 24, I left with more questions than when I came.

Why did Dr. Maulud have to renovate, lease and supply her own clinic? Why was she ‘gnawed’ out of the Midtown Medical Clinic? Where, if I heard correctly at the meeting, the doctors pay a fixed rate and the town picks up the rest of the tab. Is that treating Doctors equally, as was implied in a recent newspaper article? Why don’t

Midtown Medical Clinic doctors stay longer than a few years? And why is Dr. Maulud willing to stay longer? Is it because she has her own clinic and is able to do things her own way? Why have there been issues between her and the town ever since she’s moved here?

One newspaper article states that Dr. Maulud has over 400 patients. If so, why isn’t more support for her shown? Are community members so used to changing doctors every three years that they really

don’t care, or are there some surreptitious proceedings involved? Won’t losing these patients to other doctors in other towns be detrimental to Vermilion businesses?

What exactly is the problem? Does the fact that Dr. Maulud is from a different culture close the minds of people to the Golden Rule? (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you). Or as one writer stated: Let nothing be done through selfish ambitions or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better

than himself. Conceit is a very common vice and causes us to despise those who have a different way of life. Sad to say, I can personally attest to such discriminatory perceptions.

Dr. Maulud has shown a lot of support and concern as a physician to local community members. I think it would be a substantial medical loss to the entire area if she should take her practice elsewhere.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge served to cement the role of the Canadian Corps as the most effective Allied military formation of the war, and developed our sense of nationhood. Though both the British and the French had previously failed, the Canadian troops were able to recapture, after three grueling days of combat, a key strategic position in French territory.

Recognizing this achievement on April 9th allows us to remember the great sacrifice that these troops made. There were more than ten thousand casualties during this battle, including 3,600 lives lost, but the heroism that our troops demonstrated

brought us recognition among all Allied troops.

As the Canadian flag flies at half-mast over the Peace Tower during this day, I will remember this battle as representative of the role that our Canadian military has played and continues to play in building our nationhood. I hope you will join

me in honouring the thousands of lives lost, and the courage and determination which helped to create a new and enduring Canadian identity.

Dear Editor, Celebrating Vimy Ridge Day In my role as Member of Parliament, nothing fills me with pride like remembering and recognizing the remarkable service of men and women who proudly wore the Canadian uniform in service of Canada. In the case of Vimy Ridge, the remarkable bravery and success of the mission did much to cement Canada as a nation.

O u t l i ke a l a m b, well the old folklore q u o t e…” I n l i k e a lion- Out like a lamb” was in fact somewhat true this year, March, even though it started out like a lion was for the better part a lamb!

A l t h o u g h l a s t eve n i n g i t c o o l e d down and the winds came up and the lion tried to over take the lamb, this had to be one of the nicest and warmest March’s on record.

I hope you hadn’t made a fool on April 1, also known as April fool’s day.

I did pull a stunt on one of Alberta’s top outdoorsmen forums, as it was the opening day of Spring Bear season in Alberta.

I high-lighted a post with Spring Bear 2015 closed in Alberta, ha ha… h oweve r u p o n o p e n i n g t h e p o s t I quickly added “OR Happy Aprils fool’s day!!!” I was gonna let the post go for a bit but didn’t want the masses getting a rope, heating up the tar and accumulating feathers.

I love April, aside from the fool thing.

It ’s the month of my bir thday, I am trying to decide if that’s a good thing or not, but being an optimist ever y birthday is another year of watching the sun rise!

It i s really t h e m o nt h of s pr in g, another folklore saying is “April showers brings May flowers” so seeing cleansing rain instead of the white stuff is a good thing.

April is the month I usually see all my favorite spring signs…well this past weekend still in March, I was enjoying a calm and beautiful spring sunrise when a unmistaken serenade overtook me.

I stopped dead in my tracks, and looked to the treetops, there a happy Robin sang her heart out, and I stood

Seeing a Robin in March has to be another record for me, that made my entire day, she wasn’t my Robin that visits us on the home property each year, but she sure made it spring for myself.

I am sure our “Momma” Robin will arrive shortly and I patiently await her morning heartfelt serenades, something, I look forward to all year, and it is a huge part of my enjoyment of spring, summer and fall.

The skies have been full of spring arrival birds, just these last several d ays of M ar c h, a l l t h e s p e c i e s of geese in huge flocks, including the white snow geese seemed to arrive overnight.

I spotted my first hawk of spring, a proud Swainson’s hawk, easy to identify as it appears mostly black in color, which is actually a blended dark brown, she was awesome to watch.

I watched the Magpies build their n e s t s t h e ot h er d ay, m ag p i e s are amongst us all year, but don’t usually

pr e c i s e l y i nter we ave d c o m p l ete l y around the nest, the female will than make and entrance hole at the top to lay eggs, the young magpies are trapped in this cage until ready to fly.

One of my best spotting’s next to my Robin was what I thought at first was a bald or golden eagle, it was huge with a wing span of nearly six feet, this majestic bird glided across the sky line.

I c aught up to it and could then clearly see it was darker than even the golden eagle, in fact it was black and its t wo distinct identif ying features were the huge long, finger like wing tips.

That with its big blood red head, which looks out of place, I identified quickly that this was a large Turkey

Vulture, which most people find very ugly and almost evil looking.

I find them majestic and beautiful in their own way, given their huge blood red head is not as handsome and striking as the bald or golden eagle, but they have their own style of royalty.

Their head ver y much resembles the wild turkey, hence their name, and they are a true vulture. The turkey vulture is a scavenger feeding almost exc lusively on c arr ion, it find s its meals using its keen eyes and incredible sense of smell.

Some simply call it a “ Buzzard ”, but I think Turkey Vulture is more a mystic and suitable name. Thankfully, even though a scavenger by trade the turkey vulture are protected by the provincial Wildlife Act in Alberta.

Even though it ’s supposed to be cooler and cloudy this coming long weekend, I plan to get out with Miss Pickles and explore, although antler sheds are the highlight, the Crocus flower will be the bonus.

With all the standing water I am sure the “spring” frogs will soon be awaken to nosily let their presence be known, fine music to my ears, one of the last sure signs of spring.

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend and the Easter holiday. I hope you got outdoors and perhaps reflected for a moment the combined true meaning of Easter and rebirth of spring.

Choosing Priorities

The whole idea of, “Getting by” as Dad so often phrased it, came down to just that, choosing the jobs and ideas that would promote that whole deal, you had to do the job that was appropriate for the season.

You worked Spring break up till freeze up to grow and store enough of whatever you needed to survive the long Winter.

W h e n t h e s n ow s t ar te d m e l t i n g and water flowing, I remember we would star t the fanning mill g oing and getting our seed cleaned, at the same time we star ted watching the cows as they started roaming the hills and having calves. It was such a busy time it was hard to sort out the priorities. Of course you had the milk cows and barnyard chores and somewhere in there we had to arrange for the get together as we all helped the neighbours saw the wood, we’d spent many days through the Winter cutting and

hauling home. When the land became dr y enough to work, you had better have had time to get your field equipment ready and able to get the seed bed ready and the seed drill ready to hook on and go. There wasn’t any time to waste fixing things when it was time to get the seed in the ground as our growing season doesn’t allow much leeway.

In those early days it seemed that getting in the crop was a priority, but at the same time the summer pasture h a d t o h av e t h e f e n c e s c h e c k e d before the cattle were put in, because the first thing they’d do would be to see if there was any where the snow banks had pushed the fence down or maybe a tree had downed a stretch to allow exit! You fixed the fence first or the next priority was likely the job of hunting cattle. Before the hay season started you had to get over the land that was to be summer fallowed.

I c an remem ber the ear ly times there was no spray season yet, but we did at times harrow the young wheat crop to tr y to thin out some of the annual weeds and help stool out the crop. (make it put out more stalks was

the theory). Of course in the good old summertime we played ball at every opportunity and that was definitely a priority as Dad loved to watch us play ball!

Seemed like haying star ted early and lasted until the crop needed to be cut. Any time you could we worked at that hay. In early times of loose hay before balers, it was slow going and labour intensive. We used old horse bunch rake to make bunches that we swept up with a sweep pulled with two teams of horses, a team on each end and we pushed the hay up planks to raise it up higher and then anyone that wasn’t driving the sweep was forking and building the stack and moving the planks.

If you think it was fun, I wish you c o u l d h ave b e e n t h ere to h e l p u s enjoy it and the luke -war m water!

Then any wet spell that delayed the hay making was taken up with working on the binder and getting it ready to roll, never a dull moment. Usually the threshing machine needed some T.L.C too, as it was probably thirty years old by the time I started learning to feed it. Well, the next thing you knew, all

your efforts had to be channelled into getting the crop cut and stocked. The biggest binder there was, was only ten feet wide and forty acres was a really big day. The average would be closer to twenty-five or thirty. I could stock as fast as most and in heav y crop, ten acres was a real big deal. I can swath that much in an hour with a modern swather to give you an idea of the enormous task it was. Then the priority was the threshing. You were lucky to get it done before the snow flew! Remember the weed seed and small grain that came out under the threshing machine? Well before you could put the cows on the stubble you had to clean all that up as it would kill cows to eat much of that stuff. Then you had to fence the straw piles and fork up the edges so you could find the straw af ter it snowed. The fork handles stayed polished and the next thing you know you had to stack the green feed and hope that the efforts were fruit ful enough to make feed enough for the Winter.

Yeah, the priority was to just, “Get by.”

Ve l m a D e m e rson was 81 years old when her status as a Canadian Citizen was finally reinstated in 2004, ending nearly 65 years of statelessness. Demerson was born in Canada to Canadian parents. The events that led to her existing for most of her life as a woman without country are both fascinating and tragic.

In 1939, Demerson was convicted under Ontario’s Female Refuges Act. Her specific crime was documented as ‘Incorrigibility’. The Act, passed in 1897 and repealed in 1964, allowed government to arrest and incarcerate women between the ages of 18 and 35 for what essentially were deemed crimes of unacceptable behaviour. Specifically, the Act targeted those alleged to be engaging in promiscuity, becoming pregnant out of wedlock, and public drunkenness.

Status Limbo established a relationship with a man outside of her own race, Chinese immigrant Harry Yip. In the days when discrimination was still legal in this country, interracial relationships were more than discouraged. There were consequences.

While it’s unknown whether or not her parents knew of the couple’s intention to marry or had any knowledge of Demerson’s pregnancy at the time, it was known that they strongly disapproved of the relationship. So much so, apparently, that they alerted authorities to their daughter’s alleged transgressions. She was arrested, convicted under the Female Refuges Act, and sentenced to ten months in the now defunct Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women in Toronto.

Demerson’s son, Harry Jr., born during her incarceration, was taken from her care at the age of three months. At the time, authorities advised that she and her baby would be reunited following her release from custody.

Upon release, Demerson married her fiancé. It wasn›t until she made application for a passport that she realized, as

a consequence of marrying Yip, she automatically relinquished her Canadian citizenship. Under the provisions of the 1946 Canadian Citizenship Act, any woman who married a non-Canadian was assumed to have taken her husband›s citizenship. Although she made application for Chinese Citizenship, her request was denied by Embassy officials.

The 1947 Canadian Citizenship Act included provisions allowing for women in predicaments such as the one Demerson suffered to have their citizenship restored, however, through a series of delays and processes gone awry, it took another 57 years before she could officially call herself a Canadian. Demerson documents her journey in a book entitled ‹Incorrigible›, published in 2004.

Her story seems too incredible to be true. Yet, across Canada in 2015, there remain hundreds of Canadians living without official status and the benefits that accompany such privilege. In 2010, The Vancouver Observer began to examine this phenomenon through a series of articles collectively called ‹Lost Canadians›.

One Lost Canadian interviewed for the series was Jackie Scott, daughter of a Canadian veteran of WWII and a British mother. Under Canadian Citizenship law, Ms Scott, currently in her 60s, is not a Canadian citizen because officially her father (born in Canada in 1911) was not Canadian at the time of her birth. Jason Kenney, former Minister for Citizenship and Immigration, can be heard in a video clip online explaining to her, citing that while soldiers who fought for Canada in WWI and WWII were heroes, they were not Canadian citizens because the Citizenship Act didn›t exist until 1947. Huh? It must be a terrible surprise to live a lifetime in a country you believe you belong to, to raise your family, to pay taxes, to do all the things you think a citizen ought to do, only to apply for a passport or pension to discover that you are not who you thought you were, that you belong not to Canada but to a bewildered group hoping one day to be welcomed by the country you›ve spent your life believing was yours.

Albertans will pay more due to the collapse in oil prices. Increases to taxes and fees across the board run the largest deficit in Alberta’s history.

Dr. Richard Starke said, “It is very regrettable that people are leaving the province due to job losses, but it is one of the unfortunate realities of our economy as it is today.”

The collapse in oil prices is a result of increased oil production across the world

over the last number of years.

“This budget has difficult measures,” said Starke, ”but they are measures that need to be taken to provide our province with the kind of stable fiscal foundation that we need going forward to progress on a much more sustainable and predictable economic picture in the future.”

The health levy is set to hit individuals making more than $50,000 per year; they will have to pay a health-care levy, effective July 1. The amount will be tied to income and capped at $1,000 annually.

The levy is to be collected through the

income-tax system and will not be paid by employers.

The gasoline tax is increased at four cents per liter. Alberta’s gas tax has not been raised since 1991 and remains the lowest in Canada. The bottle of wine is up by 16 cents and it will be 90 cents more for a case of 12 beers. The tax on a carton of cigarettes will go up $5 to $45.

Mayor Bruce MacDuff said, “The deficit is being made up of the new taxes, cuts in the government and money from the

savings that had been set aside for times like this. The last government spent more than they should have, but I think that the things they spent it on were needed. If you have an income that fluctuates between $3 billion and $12 billion from the oil field maybe you should budget save the difference for years when it is under the line.

We’re not broke, we’re in good shape.

Every time the government of Alberta spends money it’s because we the people want something.”

They, along with our junior and senior badminton players, are practicing regularly with the guidance of coaches, Mr. Campbell and Mr. Zorniak. Badminton playoffs will take place on April 16.

J. R. hosted a Much Music Dance Par t y on the evening of March 26.

Pre-event sales took place throughout the week and invited all Marauder students attend as well as add nonJ.R. students to an invite list. The

J.R. Robson News coordination with St. Jerome’s School made the event a success! Thanks to Mr. MacMillan (their principal) and too many St. Jerome’s parents who helped supervise with J. R.’s staff.

It Can’t Happen to Me is an impactful presentation offered to Grade 9 students suppor ted by the Vermilion Emergency Ser vices Response Teams and Alberta Health Services.

Our students have been invited yet again to attend, and even to participate as actors in the dramatization of the realities of distracted driving. The presentation will take place later this month.

The annual graduation fundraiser was a success yet again. This year it also leaves behind an extra 25 pails

Vermilion Valley Lodge Funding Marie Conboy Reporter

Vermilion Valley Lodge Housing Foundation Manager Sheri Heller, gave her reflections last week on the $9.8 million investment by the Governments of Canada and Alberta in joint funding in support of the construction of 50 new units to replace the aging units at the Vermilion Valley Lodge.

“It’s good, it’s exciting,” said Heller, “It was time. The two wings have been in existence since 1959. The rooms are small rooms and not workable for today’s seniors. We also need to replace the dining room and enlarge the kitchen in the old wings.”

Vermilion has the one of the largest senior populations in the County of Vermilion River. Statistics show that more seniors move into towns as they age.

“We have a lot of ground work to do yet. We still have to find 20 per cent funding. We can’t put a date on when we will be starting construction yet, until the other funding portion comes into play. We have to look at our 50 year picture and do some community consultation. We have to find out what are the needs are for right here so that we don’t over build as well.”

There is no deadline with the funding and Heller says, “We need to do it right and respect the lives of our seniors so that they have comfort and care after all they have worked for.”

Love Starved Moose

T h e K i t s c ot y c o m m u n i t y d i n n er theater will take place April 10, 11, 17 & 18 at Kitscoty Hall. All proceeds will go towards supporting the Kitscoty Community Hall operations and reduced rental rates for local nonprofits. The theme of this year’s play will be that of a ‘Love Starved Moose.’

“It will be set in the Rocky Mountains in 1883, there will be a villain, a damsel in distress and a love starved moose,” says organizer Julie Evans.

The Hall is g oing to be designed to resemble the Dead Moose Lodge for this year’s play, “She was only Marginally

Modest,” by American playwright Vern Harden. “It’s going to be lots of fun.

The food this year is so fantastic, it’s homemade food made by the local volunteers” “ It ’s really all ab out g et t ing the community out for a good night, good laughs, great food and local flavour,” said Evans.

There are 15 actors in this year’s theater production; many of them have taken part in other community plays in the past.

This year’s Professional Bull Riding (PBR) is set to be a thrilling and adrenaline charged spor ting show. It will be the fourth annual Marwayne PBR event and will take place Saturday April 11 at the Marwayne Arena.

Thirty riders are signed up for this year’s PBR, all drawn by their passion for bull riding.

Professional bull riding is an

extreme, fierce and gruelling sport.

It attracts a huge following and riders have come from far and wide this year including all across Alber ta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and countries Australia, Mexico, The United States, Brazil and Europe.

Promoter and professional bull rider Denton Edge said, “ We were down a bit this year on sponsorship with the oil field slump, but we’re pushing ahead and hopefully we’ll have a

great turn out of people. It’s been a big success and a big fundraiser for the last three years. All the proceeds go to the Marwayne arena, it helps to keep the fees low for the children when they come to play hockey. We decided to let the kids be a part of our event with the Wild Pony Races, it’s a great way to let them have fun and be part of it.”

The event is organized by Promoter Denton Edge, Stock Contractor Justin Volz and the Marwayne Arena. Both

Volz and Edge have been professional bull riders for many years.

Doors will open with a beef on a bun supper at 5 p.m. followed by the Wild Pony Races at 6.30 p.m. and PBR at 7 p.m. There will be a dance to follow with live music.

Vermilion Western Unreserved Public Retirement Auction Financial Group donates to Shamrock Ranching Paul & Phil Kelly the Vermilion Museum Submitted

The Vermilion Western Financial Gr o u p re c e nt l y d o n ate d a $ 5,0 0 0 infrastructure grant to the Vermilion Museum to help replace the museum’s roof. These funds are donated through Western Financial Group’s charitable arm, the Western Communities Foundation, which gives back to the communities where Western Finan-

cial Group operates. A lot of the funds raised for the foundation come from employees who get pledges for the Western Communities Foundation’s annual Support the Cause Day Walk held each May. This year, a record 40 infrastructure grants were given to projects across Western Canada, totaling more than $200,000 being donated to the communities where Western Financial Group operates.

President Gala A Sold-Out Success

Submitted More than 400 guests attend 2015 President’s Gala The northern lights shined on Lakeland College’s students last week when more than 400 guests attended the 2015 President’s Gala – presented by Synergy Credit Union – in support of the college’s student awards program.

Final numbers are still being tallied from the March 27 event, but it is anticipated that the third annual President’s Gala will indeed be a very successful fundraiser. All proceeds raised will enable the creation of scholarships, awards and bursaries needed to make the cost of a postsecondary education more manageable for Lakeland students. “We are so grateful for the overwhelming generosity from our sponsors and for the incredible support from everyone who attended the sold-out event,” says Alice Wainwright Stewart, interim president and CEO. “The President’s Gala united our corporate partners, alumni and friends of the college in celebration and support of Lakeland’s number one priority – the students. Together we are making a difference in the lives of our students and investing in their future as well as the future of our region.”

Held at the Lloydminster campus, gala guests were transported to a winter wonderland inspired by the northern lights.

They dined on a four-course meal complete with table service. Jared Borzel, a university transfer student, and Chrystal Casper, an animal health technology student, served as emcees for the evening.

The event also featured a live auction with destination vacations, original artwork, student projects and more plus a silent auction and Luxury Package Raffle. The evening was capped off with live entertainment from Canadian power-couple Raine

Seniors Put Mettle To The Pedals

When Ed Schneider suffered a stroke in the spring of 2012, he lost movement on his left side.

“I couldn’t move my left leg or foot and it was difficult moving my arm and hand,” recalls Schneider, now a long-term care resident at Vermilion Continuing Care Centre.

Lately, however, the 84 year-old has been working out on the MOTOmed bike as part of his therapy program, and says he’s thrilled to be seeing some improvement.

“I work on it about 10 to 15 minutes once a week and I’ve gained back some strength in my legs; I am able to move around a lot easier,” he says.

Dot Hartwell, rehabilitation assistant at the facility, says the MOTOmed has become an asset to long-term care. “Our major goal is getting seniors up and about using their own strength and muscles with as little assistance as possible, because recovering mobility is so important to keep them active and mentally healthy,” says Hartwell. “The MOTOmed is excellent for increasing strength and endurance and improving the cardiovascular system.”

The bike was purchased for the facility with the help of the Friends of Vermilion Health Centre last July at a cost of almost $12,000. The motorized bike offers varied resistance levels on the handlebars, which move back and forth, as well as the pedals, so riders can exercise both the upper and lower body in one workout. This also makes it possible to customize exercise programs.

As well, users have the option of sitting in a chair or a wheelchair during their workout.

At first, residents train by using only the motor-driven pedals. But once the rider feels strong enough, they can turn off the motor and pedal under their own strength.

“It takes a while for the seniors to build up tolerance on the bike,” says Hartwell.“But after a while, most of them discover they can use it for much longer. Circulation and metabolism are improved, as well, because the residents are moving a lot and using some big muscles. “Ed has been using the bike since we purchased it and he’s shown some real improvement in his strength and endurance.”

Shellie Bates, Chair of the Friends of Vermilion Health Centre, says she’s pleased that long-term care residents have the use of the MOTOmed.

“We have a really great community that supports our health care in so many ways,” says Bates. “I’m proud to be part of such a great group of caring people.”

As for Schneider? He’s racking up the kilometres on the bike. “My best distance on it is 12 km,” he says. “I really like using the bike.”

The New Our Favourite Things Market

Carmen Meissner and Erin Chmielewski have organized an “Our Favourite Things” evening market which they are holding the first Wednesday of each month except for July and August, at the Royal Canadian Legion from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The market consist of local and area home based businesses ranging from cosmetics, clothing, jewelry, fragrance waxes, home decor, food seasoning and children’s educational toys. The items which will be on sale may change from month to month depending on the vendors involved attending the market.

Meissner said, “We started the evening

market because we think it will give members of the community a chance to attend because a lot of people are working during the day.”

Chmielewski went on to say, “We are looking forward to seeing the community come out and enjoy the variety of items being sold at our market.”

Even with the inclement weather on April 1 the market was buzzing with people looking at and purchasing products which were available. Meissner said, “This is our second market so far and the weather has been bad for both, I will be looking forward to when the weather becomes nicer.”

The next market will be held on May 6 at the Royal Canadian Legion from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Pyramids At St. Jerome School

There was a look of activity at St. Jerome’s last week , pre par ing for Gymnastics’ Day, Easter activities, and celebrating April’s Fool Day. S p e c t a c u l a r, a m a z i n g , s t u p e n d ous! Just a few c omments mad e after another amazing St. Jerome’s Gymnastics’ Day. Each house did a superb job of their events. The competition started with the Swedish Drills, followed by Pyramids and finishing off with individual and duel performances.

The themes this year were Cartier – The Super bowl, Fraser – Mocking Jay – The Hungry Games, and Mackenzie – The “100”. The competition was furious and the judges had their work cut out for them but in the end Fraser came out as champions with Mackenzie a close second and Cartier in third.

Well done to all the students especially the house leaders who come up with the creative ideas and put so

much time and effort into the day. Also thank you to our judges – Mrs. LaBoucane, Crystal Jackson, and Mr. Lewin.

On Wednesday, April 1, the Grade 1 students were surprised to see that their teacher’s Ms. McDermot t and Mrs. Moore had been assigned to the other class for the months of April, May and June. Several Grade 1 students were very sad to not have their teacher, but “April Fools” Ms. McDermott and Mrs. Moore were back in their own room in twenty minutes. At recess the elementar y students were shocked to see an alligator in the playground puddles and quickly got a supervisor to check it out. “April Fool’s” it was an alligator skull Mrs. Crate had brought in for “Show and Tell”. Many elementary students were looking for the infamous “lirpaloof bird” throughout the day. Mrs. Moore’s Grade 1 students even took carrots outside to the playground trying to lure the bird in.

Element ar y stud ents have been making beautiful Easter ar t projects. A variet y a crosses; stain glass, tissue paper, clothes pin, and painted, Easter bunnies, and spring flowers. Mrs. McCormack’s Grade 5

class made the special “Easter Buns” and also shared a “Passover Seder”.

It is a tradition for the Grade 3 class to try their hand at making pysanka (Ukrainian Easter eggs) the old fashioned way using wax, a stylus and dyes.

On March 31, the students enjoyed an afternoon of egg decorating. To wrap up their study of culture in social studies, the students will be participating in a Cultural Tasting Party on Thursday, April 2. Students will be bringing in samples of foods from various countries including the Peru, Ukraine, Tunisia and India.

A Legacy project, whereas students plan activities for other students, has been introduced to the Leadership 8/9 class. Curtis, Shawn and Shayne kicked off the legacy projects with “Cram the Can”. Tadgh and Braeden have been planning intramurals with a 3 on 3 Floor Hockey Tournament at noon Monday, Wednesday and some Fridays. This will start after the Easter break. Quinn, Kayle and Dustin are planning a Taco Salad Day for Friday April 24 - order forms for the whole school have gone out. The proceeds will be donated to a Joel Bowtell Memorial.

The new milk managers, Caleb and Aiden, have been doing a fine job with pouring the milk on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Many ideas are floating around as the new Elementary Student Council of Hailey and AInsley get down to work to plan some elementary activities. Good luck to our Junior Teachers, (Johnny, Nicholas, Alexis and Rober t); our Junior Librarians (Emma, Saige, Blake); Office Helpers (Chelsea, Sara); and our Classroom Managers (Brody, Jordan). This leadership program couldn’t exist without the help of Mrs. Obrigewitch, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. DeFord, and Mrs. Sargeant!!

Innisfree Curling Mixed Bonspiel

The Innisfree Curling club held its annual Mixed Bonspiel on March 27 through 29 with a number of teams vying for the win. It came down to the John Nott rink playing-off against Todd Bown in the final.

It was a very close, evenly matched game that saw John Nott’s final rock of the game taking out three of the Bown team’s rocks, earning him the win. Interesting enough is that his teammates were his three grandchildren, of which are triplets, belonging to his son Robert and daughter in-law Carmen Nott. Steers And Heifers Get A Spa-Day

If you live in rural Alberta you are familiar with 4H and the annual 4H show and sales.

What you are probably not aware of is the amount of work that goes into preparing the steer for the show.

It goes far beyond figuring out grain rations, and recording weight gains. You need to halter break your animal. Train it for the show ring. Learn how to properly wash and clip your animal and then finally how

to show the animal so it looks good for the judges, said Terry Dahoy, assistant leader of the Vermilion 4H Beef Club.

“The motto of 4H is to learn by doing, and the club arranged with the Lakeland College Stockman’s Club to provide our group with some hands on training on prepping their steers and heifers for the show ring” he said.

On Wednesday, April 1 the 4H members gathered at the Lakeland College AI Barn, where members of the Stockman’s Club demonstrated how to prepare steers and heifers for showing. Then the 4H club

members, under the guidance of the Stockman club members tried their hand at washing, drying, clipping and showing.

The difference between a heifer program and a steer program is that with the steers it’s a one year project. You weigh in your animal in the fall, and then spend the winter growing and preparing the animal for sale in the spring.

The heifer program is more long term.

Members will start with a heifer in the first year, and then have the option to bring it back the second year as a cow–calf pair, and then bringing it back as a three-yearold cow calf pair. It’s more about taking the steps to build a herd, said Dahoy.

This year the club’s achievement day is on May 24, along with the interclub heifer show. On May 25 the interclub steer show and sale will be held.

St Jerome’s Gymnastic’s Day

There was an electric atmosphere in the gym at St Jerome’s school as the students between the Grades 4 to 12 performed exercises requiring physical strength, flexibility, coordination and control.

Weeks were spent planning and practicing in the lead up to Gymnastics Day. “It’s a tradition that has been carried on since 1960 at St Jerome’s school,” said teacher David Sader, “Each year Grade 12 takes ownership, they have the freedom to write the script and plan their own group act.”

There were three groups in all, events involved running, jumping, marching and building a human pyramid. It was exciting to watch and the students put on a great show for the school, teachers and parents.
