Lakeland college campus was bursting with life this past weekend as spring popped its head out everywhere it could. The campus bustled with a wide range of activities hosting the Little Royal weekend March 13 t o 15 . T h e We s t e r n C a n a d i a n Ju d g ing C o m p et it i o n c he c ke d t he conformation of horses, goats, bulls, pigs and the smell and color of hay.

Taking part were students from Lakeland College and the 4H Beef clubs from the surrounding areas. The Ag Citing Day on Friday had information

sessions for prospective students and hosting tours with Lambing in action and Western ranch and cow horse, showing their cattle sorting skills and roping on Friday.

The Little Royal Rodeo dance was held afterwards in the College gymnasium and a great night was enjoyed by many.

Go Green For Saint Patrick’s Day

Saint Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate all over the world. It ’s also a day for Guinness, Riverdance, Enya, U2, leprechauns, The Ring of Kerry, shamrocks and throwing on something green to wear. Saint Patrick’s Day is hard to ignore whether you have a drop of Irish blood in you or not.

In Ireland, it’s green every day and Saint Patrick’s Day is a national holiday. The day is celebrated with a spectacular parade procession in Dublin that winds its way through the streets of the city, bursting with color and full of theatrics.

The Irish are infiltrated throughout the world due to our long histor y of immigration. I lived in Ireland all my life before I moved out to Canada. It’s hard to explain the way I feel about

Ireland except to say that it’s always in my heart. Over 100,000 Irish people immigrated over the last five years, not because they wanted to but because they had to due to a harsh economic downturn.

The things I miss the most about this small island in the Atlantic Ocean would be the people, the banter and the landscape. However, I don’t miss the hangovers, because as a nation we are well known for our fondness of a few drinks.

Ireland is also well known all over the world for the Irish pub, traditional Irish music, the Gaelic games, its complex history, ancient castles, The Cliffs of Moher and the rough Atlantic Ocean famous for its great surf.

Ireland would fit into British Columbia eleven times, to give you an idea of the geographical size in comparison to Canada.

What makes up the Irish character?

I would say it consists of a closeness of family, a strong sense of identity, a fondness for a good old party, an ability of all things creative and a love of humor. I am biased about the place but

I would highly recommend everyone to visit sometime if you can or get in the spirit this Saint Patrick’s Day. Put on something green and have a Guinness on March 17.

Every day c o n sum er s head off to local grocery stores to pick up their groceries to feed their families. I, for one not being a farm girl, very rarely think about all the dangers our farmers and ranchers face in their quest to provide us with the food we eat.

Before moving to Alberta from Newfoundland, I hardly ever thought about where the meat my family and I consumed was coming from.

I grew up where my grandpa had a little farm in which he had chickens, a jersey cow, a couple goats and maybe three or four ducks.

As a young girl, I can remember getting roused out of bed early to go help my grandpa collect eggs and watch him as he milked the cow and fed the animals. In the summer we would watch as he cut grass,

made hay and planted vegetables in the vegetable garden.

I was never much of a meat eater, as my grandpa had this nasty habit of killing what I perceived as a family pet, namely the cows and goats which, of course, had names.

During meal time my grandpa would always say the name of his latest victim and thank him or her for giving us such a great meal. Needless to say to me, it was like eating the family dog.

Once I became older and was able to make the choice for myself I chose not to eat meat, I would eat an egg or some fish but the whole beef and pork idea was just something I did not want to do.

When I became pregnant with my first child, I was informed by the doctor that I really needed to start consuming even a small amount of meat as my iron was too low. With that decision, I had to basically talk myself into believing that the meat I bought did not come from cattle ranches or pig farms, also that no animal was harmed in the production of my meat supply. In my

mind, my meat magically appeared neatly wrapped in the grocery store ready for me to purchase and place on the barbeque or put in the oven.

I had never seen in my lifetime cattle ranching like it is here in Alberta. I remember my first look at true cattle ranching as we drove from the airport in Edmonton to Vermilion and I saw fields with so many cows. I was truly amazed and remember quite clearly saying “Look at all those cows!”

I could not believe the number of cows one family could own.

It wasn’t until I started meeting people from Vermilion that I realized the vastness of these ranches and the dangers that go along with being a cattle farmer. The stories of how ranchers and helpers would get run over by the cows or squished by them while trying to look after them and kicked by them, you name it. It is a extremely dangerous profession and I have to give my appreciation to them as it is definitely not a job I could ever see myself doing.

serve my family come packaged and ready for me to use each day as I prepare meals.

Never once did I ever think about all the long hours and hard work a grain farmer has to spend tending to acres and acres of fields. Getting the fields ready in the spring, making sure they do not get infested with bugs to ruin their crop and countless hours combining in the fall. It is amazing the huge machinery they use to work the fields.

Again, never in my lifetime have I ever seen machines so big.

I never in my wildest dreams realized the dangers that face the people in the agricultural section. According to www.abfarmsafety.com agriculture is ranked as Canada’s third most hazardous industry and in terms of absolute numbers of fatalities.

There is no more dangerous occupation.

It is with high respect and gratitude, I have to take this opportunity to thank all the farmers and ranchers for the hard work they do and recognize the dangers in which they face each and every day.

Letter To The Editor Article Reference Financial Assistance For Doctor As a former Mayor of Vermilion and Chair of the Doctors Retention Committee, I would like to add clarification to a few points from recent articles in both papers.

First and foremost, the Doctor Retention Committee has been going for more than ten years, committee members included the Villages of Dewberry, Mannville and Innisfree, along with the county of Minburn, county Vermilion River, and the Town of Vermilion. They represent approximately seventeen thousand residents.

A per capita was agreed upon by all members to provide incentives that would attract doctors to the area. Some of the incentives were a payment of ten thousand

dollars, accommodations for a period of time, short term vehicle leases and furniture. These varied depending on the needs of the doctors coming.

The biggest challenge the committee was faced was other communities throughout Alberta were paying more to attract doctors. We constantly met and spoke with the various Health Minster, and other Government officials and gained no ground. I understand the difficulty facing the current Retention Committee faces. We now have a doctor who wishes to remain in the community and is seeking financial assistance.

I believe the focus of the Retention committee needs to shift towards retaining

In response to the ongoing doctor discussions I feel there should be a few questions set forth and hopefully answered by our town council and persons involved.

Let’s be very careful. The gossip has already started. People are being hurt – not only Dr. Maulud and her family but all those people who know and respect her.

It seems premature and perhaps even reckless to publish an article without a he said/she said component. What did Dr. Maulud have to say? Surely she was interviewed before this publication.

Why did Dr. Maulud leave the clinic?

Were there problems or did she just want her own place? What concessions do the Midtown Medical Clinic doctors receive from the Town? Perhaps SHE is not being treated equally? How do we know?

There is just too much room left for speculation.

Rent seems to be a big issue. Firstly, we are told that Dr. Maulud is benefitting because her family lives in a home owned by the Town and that she pays “a very low rent.” Next we are told that if the Town

grants her rent-free, it would cost $15,000 per year. By my calculation, Dr. Maulud is paying $1250 per month to rent this particular house. Is this what is considered “a very low rent”? What kind of a house is it?

Is it even worth $1250 per month?

This is only one of the issues raised in the article but I feel there is much more happening here than meets the eye.

I am not for a second suggesting that the Town should concede to all Dr. Maulud’s demands. To do that would likely mean an increase in taxes and I, for one can’t afford it. The cost of living in Vermilion is already too high in my opinion.

What I am suggesting, is that something else must be going on behind the scenes. Give the whole story or nothing.

This type of discussion does not bode well for our community or for any potential incoming doctors.

It would be a crying shame to lose yet another doctor – especially one who actually wants to stay!

doctors. they need to lobby the Province to fix the ongoing bidding war for doctors. The municipalities represented by the committee belongs to two of the strongest associations in Alberta, they are the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association and Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties. These associations need to come together with a solution to assist communities with a very important issue.

Retain doctors and do away with bidding wars.

The current situation with Dr. Maulud needs to be addressed in front of the Retention Committee and not in the news, In the past, when new doctors arrived they met

with the committee. Why would they not be owed the courtesy to meet in person again to discuss the ongoing issues of retaining doctors?

I find comments in the newspaper from our Mayor using words such as “ransom” and “blackmail” to be uncalled for. Why would any doctors looking at coming to our community find this tone attractive? I’m sure the Retention Committee has positive elected officials who are forward thinkers and will come up with what they truly believe is in the best interest for the seventeen thousand resident they serve.

I am enjoying March as a lamb more than the lion we experienced at the arrival, snow and ice melting slow but sure a couple of really warm days and we may see a little overflow. Ice warnings are on alert around the province use caution on any ice, inform and keep an eye on the youngsters, and maybe even some of us adults that have the urge to test ice covered water. March is always the best time for ice fishing, however ice conditions can go from good to dangerous in a very short time. I hope to make it back out before the ice deteriorates.

I saw my first gopher this past weekend, he looked like he just got out of the shower, so I am thinking he was awoken from his slumber by water run off draining into its burrow. He shook himself off like a dog after a swim and enjoyed the warm sunshine, he munched on a patch of dry grass, probably not his favorite breakfast as he will be eagerly awaiting his first favorite green dandelion snack.

The familiar sound of fall could be heard above, and that was welcoming, a couple of small flocks of geese flying in formations, looking for open water or a crop field to dine on. The geese may be a little anxious on their journey to the far North to raise their young however, I am hoping that their instincts are better than our weatherman’s. I even saw a pair of crows, not that they are spectacular in any way, in fact they just may be my least favorite bird. I will of course be elated to see one of my most favorite birds, which is our Robins and their much appreciated spring songs. With the first day of spring next week on March 20, I hope they wait until that grumpy ole man winter leaves as it will be most likely he leaves throwing a tantrum. Another of my top favorite birds are plumb and fat, we must have fed them ten pounds of suet and seed this winter, well worth the show just outside the kitchen window of our home in the hanging feeders. One of our regular and understandably fattest Chickadee’s hung upside down feeding on the suet hanger, a beautiful Cedar Waxwing joined him on the feeder, and the social Chickadee shared and seemed to enjoy the company. Seeing the Waxwing by itself was unusual as they usually show up in spring in large flocks, they then land on the Mountain Ash tree by the patio and clean it bare of any berries left from fall. They will also land in any crab apple trees and clean them bare, it was nice to see it close up at the feeder.

I am also enjoying the extra hour of sunshine in the afternoons and into the evening. Against better judgement or maybe eluding fear and common sense I am defiantly getting the spring fever and I want to get more active, I cannot wait to get out and explore. I had an offer to go fly in fishing on Great Slave Lake this summer in The Northwest Territories, which is the second largest lake in The Northwest Territories, not to be confused with Lesser Slave Lake here in Alberta, also with the fact it is second biggest lake, but in Alberta. The offer seems like a ‘too good to be true’ scenario but thanks to this column, a veteran fishing guide that lives in Alberta, but guides fishing tours at Great Slave Lake is a reader of this newspaper.

However a full week of some of the best fresh water fishing in Canada, at a five star fly in lodge would be both an honor and a dream come true, if it becomes a reality I will have to add it to the “bucket list”, just so I can scratch it off. That wasn’t on my bucket list only because I thought I may never see Great Slave Lake again, I flew off of Great Slave lake in a float plane several years ago when I flew near the Arctic

Getting The Brush Off Franklin Wolters Columnist

The advent of the bigger and wider equipment has really spelled the demise of the little bush patches that used to be farmed around. I guess it will be harder than ever for the crows and other assorted wildlife to find cover anymore.

In this part of the country, prairie fires had kept the bush under control except maybe in the low spots where some trees could gain foothold but mostly the bald prairie was simply just plowed up and farmed. It was a different story a bit north of here where the bush covered a high percentage of the land. I think there was a bit more moisture in that country most times so trees grew more readily.

Some years ago, my husband and I agreed to meet with a group of Grade six students on a regular basis to talk about things related to law. We mapped a plan intended to engage and, hopefully, hold their interest. During the final session, we invited a few friends to participate in a mock trial loosely based on the Grimms brothers’ Red Riding Hood. The Big Bad Wolf was the Defendant on trial. He was charged with, you know, Being Bad. One of the highlights of those sessions----for the kids certainly, but also for me----was a tour of the local RCMP station. All of it was intriguing but everyone listened most intently to the forensic specialists who kindly guided us through the lab and demonstrated some of the techniques and equipment used within it.

Among other things, we all learned that no matter how clever or discreet you may imagine you are, you will leave traces of your actions behind. An astute, welltrained observer can discover them and a forensics expert will connect the dots that lead the deed back to the hand of its origin.

Cyber forensics might be a good choice for young people searching for a viable career path into the future. It can, at times, seem the stuff of a dystopic Sci-Fi novel, but the concept of every move we make being traceable is no longer all fiction created by an imaginative writer.

The ubiquitous presence of online social media has made the possibility of global connections the norm of modern living. It’s prompted millions of users to disclose pertinent details of personal identity, complete with photographs of

themselves, family members, friends, descriptions of activities, possessions, locations----all of it available to anyone looking. It’s so fascinating to connect and to access, yet the average user probably understands little or nothing of the less friendly potential that such a willingness to share personal information with the online world allows.

We leave traces of ourselves everywhere we go online. Many social media sites retain our information, our random ‘posts’ with whatever additional content we’ve included long after we’ve lost interest and decided to delete our accounts.

Our information doesn’t dissipate, it just fades to the background like strands of ghostly clothing swaying gently in the cyberspace cloud of temporary oblivion.

There was an informative segment on CBC radio last year that explored the concept of off-site storage space commonly referred to as The Cloud.

We’ve heard stories about unfortunate people who failed to comprehend that The Cloud is not a fluffy thing in the sky to which only they hold the password to enter, but a massive, temperaturecontrolled storage facility for hard drives located in California. Yes, of course, you may store all those private images of yourself paying homage to your immense beauty and svelte physique but, no, they aren’t necessarily accessible only by you.

With a warrant, law enforcement agencies can peak into every little trace of a website visit, email sent or received, photograph stored, telephone call or text made with your personal web device.

And if it’s roaming around wifi, all the better. They thank you for making the job a little less strenuous.

It’s true that it takes considerable expertise and the right software to access or ‘hack’ your personal stuff. Most of us

are probably not doing anything so interesting as to attract either larcenous criminals or law enforcement agents.

As is the case with many aspects of our modern world, that we comprehend only a fragment of how cyberspace works doesn’t mean we ought to throw up our hands, accepting that it’s beyond us. We can find out the basics, attempt to become more aware.

And, of course, conduct ourselves with the knowledge that whatever we do can be discovered if the right people seek to find it.

On a recent trip to the Dominican Republic I had the good for tune to experience some of the local food, decor and culture.

One of the interesting deserts was a cookie made of thinly sliced almonds.

Almond trees are native to the Dominion Republic, and we soon noticed that this cookie was a recurring theme, served after the evening meal.

Unlike m any Canad ian d eser t s, Dominican desserts were not as sweet, with the sweetness barely detectable.

Let me explain, almonds are full of vitamin E oil, a major component of moisturizing beauty creams. Vitamin E is also an important anti-oxidant in our body. Both almonds and egg whites are an excellent source of both biotin and protein needed for healthy skin, hair and nails.

Studies have shown that almonds seem to help with weight loss, especially belly fat due to their mono-saturated oil content and low glycemic index. Almonds are a precursor building block needed for the formation of melatonin, which recent research has

shown, aids in weight loss by converting stagnate white fat into metabolism hotter beige fat. Melatonin is needed to acquire that all important beauty sleep, which is a time for the body and skin to regenerate.

Almonds eaten regularly also help to lower bad cholesterol, raise good cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. For some people that are prone to cold sores, eating too many nuts can bring on a break out, due to the creation of an imbalance of the amino acids lycine and arginine.

Nuts contain more arginine and may need to be balanced with lycine containing foods such as yogurt, cheese, dairy and apples. One of these cookies would be a great evening snack.

Almond cookies 2 egg whites 2 -3 tablespoons sugar 2 cups sliced almonds 3/4 teaspoon vanilla Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Beat the egg whites until frothy, beat in the sugar and vanilla. Stir in the slivered almonds. Drop onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

This recipe makes approximately 1 dozen cookies. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove while they are still warm, and allow the cookies to cool.

I have used wax paper, but I find that they stick a bit, even when buttered, so parchment paper would be best. I make this with 2 tablespoons of sugar, but you may like more.

The students of St. Jerome’s have been treated to two incredible presentations this past week. On Tuesday, March 10, the Alberta Opera brought their production of “Rumplestiltskin” for the kindergarten to Grade 7 students to enjoy. A variety of our students were included as members of the cast. The “Spin that Wheel” game show was the setting of this modern day “Rumplestiltskin”. Mrs. Miller lost everything in the game show but had one more chance to win her life back if she could figure out the true name of the game show host.

The actors were incredibly entertaining

with their changing of characters, and costumes.

That afternoon we will be entertained by all of our talented stu d ent s who are willing to share their gifts at our Annual Talent Show.

Students Ready To Showcase Herd At Beef Day 2015 Lakeland College Submitted

After months of planning, Lakeland College animal science technology students are ready to welcome people to Beef Day 2015.

by New Holland host Beef Day 2015 on Saturday, March 21 at the Equine Centre at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus.

The students selec ted 12 Blac k Angus bulls and three lots of Anguscross commercial females for the sale.

“We believe that these lots of bulls and heifers are a perfect representation of

our breeding program at the college,” says Grayden Kay, general manager of the SMF purebred unit.

Planning for Beef Day 2015 started in the fall, says Darian Livingstone, manager of the purebred unit’s public relations team. Marketing, bull management, show and sale, and logistics committees were created to ensure all elements of the event were properly planned, from creation of the sale catalogue to hiring of the auctioneer and set up of the Equine Centre.

Now it’s show time. The students are excited to see the results of their efforts.

“We had a very successful fall show season so interest in our herd has grown. Many people have phoned or emailed with questions and a number

people have stopped in to see the herd.

The reaction has been very positive,” says Kay. The students have also emailed recent alumni of the college’s animal science technology program to invite them to the event. After all, the bulls and heifers that will go through the sale ring are very much a reflection of decisions made by previous classes, says Livingstone.

“I think it will be great for alumni as well as local producers to see our accomplishments in terms of the genetics of our herd,” she says.

Proceeds from the sale will go back into the commercial and purebred units,

possibly for herd expansion, says Kay. Beef Day 2015 starts at 11:30 am with a preview of the animals. Lunch will be served at noon followed by the sale at 1:30 pm. The college’s applied research team will also have displays in the Equine Centre. What’s more amazing is that she has earned her position to represent Alberta at the Canada West Meet in Selkirk, Manitoba on March 20 to 22! Fantastic job, Jelena!

Clay Radesh and his PeeWee Team played some incredible hockey. He assisted the team from his goalie position, diving and stopping the puck! With the smell of victory in the air the boys snagged the win and came home, Zone 2 champs!! Brilliant goal tending, Clay!!

Sticking with the hockey theme, several other students also engaged in great games. Not only did they play well with their team, the Elk Point Storm, in the Jasper Hockey Tournament but both Laramie and Jelena Parr scored their first few goals of the season. Way to go, girls! As this article goes to print, Brenton Romanchuk and his Teir 1 Atom team began their journey to provincials.

As of Friday, March 12 they had won their first game against Winfield with an amazing score of 15 to 0! Absolutely superb! Lucas Dennill and Ryan Parr head into the weekend of playoffs with the Mustangs! Good luck boys!!

School activities on a Sunday? Are you kidding? No, they sure weren’t!

Junior and senior high students, parents and staff enjoyed a fun-filled day of ice fishing at Laurier Lake on March 8! The weather was beautiful and they all had a blast! Some catching over 25 perch, like Haley Fanjoy did, while others, like Steven Manchen, not catching anything but just taking the time to assist others with their tackles and hooks!

Canadian Agricultural Safety Week runs March 15 to 21 this year. This is a great time for farmers, farm workers and families to initiate discussion around safety and implementing a health and safety system on their farms.

“It is important to create and implement a health and safety management system that encompasses all aspects of a farm’s operations for the entire year,” says Laurel Aitken, farm safety coordinator for Alber ta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD). “The impor tant first step to creating this system is for farm owners and managers to develop a policy outlining their commitment to safety.”

O n c e that c ommitment is put in place the next steps are to identify hazards and put controls in place to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with those hazards. The very nature of duties associated with farming can make hazard identification a rather daunting task. However, it is the identification and control of hazards that create a safe environment on any worksite. Continual monitoring for new hazards and reporting and investigating incidents enable owners, managers and workers to make continuous improvements.

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development is now in the final stages of completing the second pilot program to test the Alberta FarmSafe Plan. The plan is a tool to help farmers implement a tailored health and safety system for their farming operation. It was developed in conjunction with Alberta Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour and the

Canadian Agricultural Safety Association. The Alberta FarmSafe Plan will be available to help Alberta farmers implement their own health and safety management system this fall.

Prevention is the best management strategy. A long rotation between canola crops (1 in 4 years) is the single most important preventative strategy. Fields that have clubroot problems have a history of a short (often 1 in 2 years) canola rotations. Equipment sanitation: clean dirt from equipment, including tires, when moving between fields or when equipment is crossing your land. The CVR Agricultural Service Board surveyed 70 canola fields in 2014 and found no positive clubroot locations. Our only positive clubroot location was confirmed in 2011.

You spend months planning, stressing and even obsessing over every single detail of your wedding day! The cake theme, the colour of the flowers, the table decorations and what you wear is carefully thought out and dreamed about! After the wedding day, what carries on? You have your ring, and you will have your wedding portraits.

There are many options out there for displaying wedding portraits that will ensure your wedding day memories never fade from memory - from albums to custom framed prints and gallery wrapped canvas wall portraits. As a wedding photographer though, the number one question we are asked is: “can we get a disk of our pictures?”. My response to this question is always the same - why?

Earlier this year, Apple announced their new computers will only have a USB 3 Type-C port. In 2008, Apple began manufacturing computers without optical drives first CD’s and then DVD drives have slowly become obsolete. Now images are stored on USB flash drives or external hard drives with USB ports and Apple has begun the process that will make these drives obsolete. If you are a very tech savvy person, then you will take the time to upgrade your personal photos to new media storage solutions as the technology changes. If you are not, within five years, the media you store your images on will be obsolete meaning you will not have your wedding photos or any other personal photos within five years,

unless you take the time and spend the money to keep them upgraded and current.

Google’s boss, Vint Cerf, recently stated that this generation will be known as the “forgotten century”. We take hundreds of photos on our phone but only one cell phone image in 100,000 images is ever printed out! That is a staggering statistic. Google assigned us the “forgotten century” tag because all of our data is stored on computers, cell phones or tablets whose technology will be outdated in just a few years. Again, unless we spend time and money upgrading our storage systems, the data stored on these devices will soon disappear. It is anticipated that 99 per cent of the photographs taken now, will not be around in the very near future! When we consider that there have been more photographs created in the past five years, then in all the previous time leading up to that, that number is unfathomable.

In our own experience, 80 per cent of clients who purchased a digital file, did nothing with it. This is also a staggering statistic to me! When I question brides further on why they want the digital files, I find major reason is to share a few images on social media with family and friends.

This is significantly different than a disc of all high resolution images and the price tag associated with it should show that.

Unless you are an avid scrap booker, the

files remain locked on a computer and are rarely used. As a photographer, who creates portrait art that celebrates life’s milestones, this is a sad fact of life.

As a bride, I encourage you to consider what you are going to do with your images before you start the process. Do you want a portrait display for your wall, an album that chronicles your day start to finish, or just a collection of custom prints of your closest family and friends on your special day. Go in to the meeting with an idea of how you would like to display your memories from your wedding day and this will help ensure you end up with exactly what you want to carry on your memories.

And finally, I truly encourage you to do your homework on all of the vendors you hire for your big day. In the photography industry for example, there is no qualification required before opening up a photography business. There is no technical test, no requirement for back up equipment, business licenses or even liability insurance. Remember, these are memories you want to last a lifetime! Ask questions - are you professionally trained? Do you have backups for all of your equipment?

What happens if your child is sick on my wedding day? Do you have proper business insurance (i.e. not a home policy)?

Are you a member of your industry’s notfor-profit professional organization? Do you have liability insurance? Do you have a GST number and up to date business licenses? These are all questions you can ask a vendor to ensure their services will meet with your expectations! If the answer

Mya wanted to host the fundraiser fashion show as a way to pay if forward for all the support she and her family received from the community and Stollery hospital during her surgeries and recovery.

Upon their arrival and throughout the evening until 9 p.m. guest had the opportunity to bid on various items including gift certificates, makeup, scentsy items, jewelry, children’s gift baskets, clothes and even binoculars and fishing gear for the outdoor enthusiast, through a silent auction.

The Midget Ireland Farm Equipment boys are attending a Kids for Cancer Tournament in Mundare March 27 to 29. A young boy on the Vegreville Midget team has been stricken with leukemia in November and has remained in hospital ever since awaiting a bone marrow transplant. The family has refused financial help but has asked for any funds raised go to the Kids with Cancer Society. A very good cause!

The Midget Girls Provincial committee are getting our boys to help with setup and cleanup for next for next weeks’ event in exchange for a donation to take to this Cancer fundraiser. Donations will be accepted and receipts are available. Our team will make a presentation at the tournament on behalf of our community. Nearly all of us have been touched somehow/someone close by this horrible disease.

Community Growth Continues County of Vermilion River Submitted

The County of Vermilion River is pleased to be able to present funds in the amount of $800,000 to the Buffalo Trails School Division and the E.H. Walter School construction project. The funds will be used to enhance the new school

construction by allowing the community to add a stage and increase the size of the gymnasium. This will create a multifunctional facility for the community that could host arts and entertainment, special events, sporting tournaments and community celebrations. These types of activities will positively impact Paradise

Valley and region by encouraging a lifestyle based on arts and fitness, will bring visitors to enhance the economy, and foster a sense of community.

The County has issued a debenture for $750,000 and is committing an additional $50,000 from Park Trust Funds towards the project. The total project is estimated at $1.36 million with the EH Walter School Parent/Community Support Association fundraising for the remaining $560,000.

Alberta Opera at St. Jerome’s School Alberta Opera visited St Jerome’s school March 10 and put on their rendition of Rumpelstiltskin. Some lucky students were chosen to act on stage. Teachers and students were captivated by the wonderful acting and theatrics. The show was enjoyed by students from kindergarten to Grade 7. This “Spin that Wheel” game show re-enacted the setting to a modern day ‘Rumplestiltskin.’ The actors were incredibly colorful and entertaining with changing their characters and costumes often. 2015 Music Festival Submitted

Vermilion is the destination for pianists, violinists, vocal artists, and speech artists the week of March 23 to March 29. Adjudication will take place at each venue. The Strings venue is at First United Church Monday afternoon and Tuesday, the Vocal/ Speech Arts venue is at First United Church on Wednesday, and the Piano venue is at Parkview Alliance Church on Wednesday evening, and all day Thursday and Friday.

This is a week of opportunity for the public to enjoy and appreciate the diligence and talent of all these young people!

Reflections by Bernie Huedepohl Vermilion Music Festival held its first

festival in 1980. From the 1930’s to the late 1950’s Vermilion had had a music festival run by the schools, but that lapsed when the government no longer supported it. In the 1970’s, some of the music teachers had been taking their classes to Lloydminster, and when some of the schools began to take their classes to Lloyd as well, Art Boggs and the newly formed Allied Arts Council urged some of the participants to re-establish the festival.

Our first festival was expected to be a one day event with one adjudicator handling all disciplines. It became a three day speech event with a day of vocal and a day of piano.

Early on, speech was the dominant discipline, in part because of the strong

declamation program at St. Jerome’s. At one point in the late 1980’s, we had eight days of Speech Arts and Wayne Ward became our first winner at the Provincial Music Festival. As involvement in Speech Arts declined, Piano picked up and in the 1990’s had as many as six days of Piano.

Dance joined us in the 1990’s until the two dance festivals became so large it was no longer efficient to work together. They have split off and both Ukrainian Dance and Dance are holding flourishing festivals.

The business community has always been a strong supporter of Festival. When I look at the list of donors, a great many have been supporters for more than ten years, and some have supported us generously since 1980. Community Closet, in particu-

lar, has been a very generous sponsor to us, and in the beginning, their support gave us the means to attempt to hold the festival.

We have always attempted to be a teaching festival. Our emphasis is less on the competitive aspect of the festival than it is one having students prepare their selections to be presented to the public and to receive feedback so the next time they present to the public (or even perform for themselves) they can do it better. We want them to grow as musicians and as people.

For us as organizers, it is exciting to see that growth as students return year after year. In 2000, all but one of our adjudicators had come up through our festival, and that was very exciting.

Dr. Seuss was our theme for Accelerated Reading this year and our goal was 3333 quizzes. Excitement was in the air on Tuesday, March 10 as our elementary students FINALLY reached that goal.

Both Mr. Church and Mr. Myhovich dyed their hair pink, and Fat Cat even hosted a pink hairdo. The highlight of our assembly was an absolutely creative SEUSS cake made by Mrs. Amy Shomachuk. And now, since we still have time left in the year, we have chosen a new goal of 1111 quizzes.

The junior boy’s basketball team participated in the year-end Highway 16 Tournament at E.H. Walter School in Paradise Valley. Coach Barb Watling led the team that consisted of: Morgan Watling, Tyson Dufault, Zach Leronowich, Ethan TobinGillis, Max Amero, Shawn Heward, Shayne Heward, Curtis Ludwig, Glenn Storch and Diego Tinoco. Coach Watling and Mannville School are proud of the effort the boys put into the season.

The Grade 3 and 4 class with Miss Cusack has been doing dance in Phys.

Ed. They have learned a wide variety of dances: Bird Dance, The Butterfly,

Macarena, Saturday Night line dance, Heel-Toe Polka, YMCA, Party Rock, Jive, Two Step, and freestyle. They even had two of their own classmates, Alex Polishuk and Amaya Myhovich, teach them some highland dancing. They did a great job and the rest of the class loved it. It was great to see all of the students having so much fun during this unit.

In Miss Miller’s phys ed classes, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson volunteered their time and ran a curling clinic for the Grade five and six classes, and now Mrs. Sharon Stredwick is in teaching yoga to our Grade 7 and eight students. One of the advantages of living in a small, close community is local volunteers.

Phys Ed 9 / 10 are now enrolled in a four day program unit at Lakeland College. The students will be participating in Rock Climbing; Boot Camp Fitness, and Squash.

In CALM class, they are finishing up the topic of perseverance, and making positive personal choices. Their next topic will be focussing on employment skills and career choices which will include making a cover letter, resume and interview skills.

There is a wide variety of projects being worked on in our secondary CTS classes with Mr. Polishuk. Currently the projects include: a dog house, desk, shelving, blanket chest, TV stand and a bedside table.

BTPS has posted the 2015 -2016 School Calendar on their website. Take a look as there are a few changes next y e a r. T h e r e will not be early dismissals on the first Wednesday of the m onth.

Other changes include Professional Development Days/Test Team Days and Lieu Days on Fridays only.

VERMILION — Carman Moen says he’s more than happy his surgeon had the use of a loaner cystoscope to verify that his bladder cancer hasn’t returned. In fact, he’s so happy he’s chipped in $500 to help buy Vermilion Health Centre its own cystoscope.

“I was diagnosed with bladder cancer two years ago,” adds the 62-year-old, “and since then I’ve had three operations to remove the tumours. After the last operation, I’ve had three more scopes to make sure no cancer has returned.”

A diagnostic test, cystoscopy lets doctors look at the inside of the urethra and bladder via a thin, flexible, lighted instrument with a camera on the end — a cystoscope.

Inserted into the urethra and slowly advanced into the bladder, the cystoscope gives doctors images that surpass X-rays in clarity.

As surgeons check out the inside of the bladder and urethra, images display overhead on large HD monitors, to give the patient a real-time, birds-eye view of the proceedings, as well.

“The test is really simple and takes about a minute or so to perform,” says Dr. Derek

Bochinski, Urological Surgeon at the Vermilion Health Centre.

Visiting the health centre once a month from Edmonton, Bochinski and his father, also a visiting urological surgeon from Edmonton, are both happy with the loaner cystoscope.

“The camera at the end of the new cystoscope gives us a crisper, clearer, HD image — a vast improvement over the old non-HD image,” says Bochinski.

“With the improved illumination and resolution technology we get from HD images, it’s easier to see lesions, tumours, prostate problems, or anything else in the lower urinary tract,” he adds.

“Using surgical instruments inserted through the cystoscope, we can also take urine samples, or do a biopsy while we’re in there, for further diagnosis.”

While the health centre currently has working cystoscopes, they need upgrading. They were fortunate to use a loaner cystoscope and monitor from Olympus, the company that sells them, since last December, but had to return it in February.

The Friends of Vermilion have been fundraising since last October to purchase two new cystoscopes, at a total cost of $37,900 as well as the workstation to house the HD

Cystoscope Gives Doctors An Inside Look Cont.

One of the biggest benefits to having this equipment at the health centre permanently will be the ability to keep patients in their own area for testing. With new technology and upgrades, the new cystoscopes are a must have.

To date $34,000 has been raised for the new cystoscopes, which will be purchased as soon as the necessary funds are raised. “It’s tough to say when we’ll have all the funds but

we are hoping to have all the money raised by this summer,” says Shellie Bates, Chair of the Friends of Vermilion Health Centre.

“Without this type of equipment, we’d have to send people to Edmonton for the test — and that can be tough for many people,” says Bochinski. “Not only is it costly to travel, it can be a scary time for patients’ having to undergo the test. So staying at home with family support is really important.”

Bates understands the need for the new cystoscopes.

“We know this is a critical piece of equipment that benefits our community in many ways,” she says. “So far we’ve received dona-

tions from the Vermilion Community Closet, Vermilion Rotary, grad class of 2012 and proceeds from one of our raffles.”

And for Moen, he’s been given a clean bill of health after his last three cystoscopies in 2014. “I was living in Lloydminster when I found out I had bladder cancer, so I continue my treatment in Vermilion, even though I moved to Sherwood Park a year ago.”

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted VIBE has been very busy with programming. The Grade 1 students have been learning about feelings and worries in Building Mental Wellness (BMW Kids), the Grade 2, 3, and 5 students have been learning the 7 Habits of Happy Kids, Grade 4 has learned about stress and anxiety in Building Mental Wellness (BMW Youth), and Grade 6 are learning about respect and responsibility in Girls’ Club. The Grade 6 students will also have the opportunity to work on study skills to discover the best learning strategies for them to be successful, how to prepare for test writing and ways to deal with test anxiety.

Teachers in VES participated in Teachers’ Convention on March 5 and 6. The convention opened with keynote speaker Michelle Cederberg, who is a health and

productivity expert. Over the past 20 years she has built her career as a speaker, life coach and author, educating others about health, happiness, life balance and success. She gave us lots to think about as we went forward with our two days full of sessions and colleague collaboration.

Our closing keynote, Rob Chubb told us how laughter helps reduce stress, improve memory, enhance learning, manage crises, create group cohesion, and increase resiliency. The convention definitely stuck to its theme: reflect, re-inspire, and re-energize.

Alberta Opera visited VES on March 10 and put on their rendition of Rumpelstiltskin. Larissa, Billy, Mat, and Talesa did a superb job of keeping the audience enthralled. 16 students from our school were chosen to act and be a part of the stage crew.

FoodShare’s Great Big Crunch invited students and staff to learn about healthy eating through the apple’s journey from seed, to harvest, to market, to table. As a school body, we met in the gym on March

12 to have a part in the nation’s Big Crunch event by each eating an apple at the same time as everyone else.

The Grade 6 students will be selling Stawnicky’s sausages from Mar. 16 to 20.

This is to help with the costs of their field trip to Birch Bay Ranch in June.

Kindergarten will be holding their registration on March 24 starting at 6:30. If you have a child who is turning 5 before Feb. 28, 2015, they are eligible to register for kindergarten. The Amazing Race Winners

The Amazing Race winners were Braden Beattie, Jarrod Bolwell, Regan Billingsley and Calvin Ireland. The four winners were delighted with their travel voucher prizes and said that they might use the voucher to jet away on a holiday soon. Braden said he enjoyed the Archery part of the competition.

Skills For Life On The Cadets Winter Exercise Marie Conboy Reporter

The Cadets Winter exercise took place near Wainwright from February 6 to 8. The 2645 Vermilion Army Cadets along with 601 Macklin, Saskatchewan Air Cadets participated in a winter field training exercise hosted by 3003 Battle River (Wainwright) Army Cadets. The exercise is an opportunity for cadets to learn winter survival skills and take part in other activities including setting up arctic tents, learning how to start a winter fire and surviving the weekend without getting too cold.

“We are only allowed to stay out in conditions up to minus 30,” said Second Lieutenant, Training Officer, Nitasha Irvine. “It’s really all about getting them involved in

In the fall the cadets are taught how to start fires with flint. Winter fires build on that skill by learning how to find fire wood when most wood is wet, like searching for little sticks at the bottom of a pine tree or freshly split wood which is dryer than wood that has been sitting. “We teach the Cadets tricks like putting Vaseline on cotton balls; it will burn for up to five minutes and help you to get your fire going.

Snowshoeing over different types of terrain and in challenging snow conditions was another activity cadets endured.

They pulled a military toboggan across a lake and up a hill. This was no easy task as the toboggan weighed 200 pounds full and 51 pounds empty. It took the team work of three Cadets with two pushing and one pulling and steering.

Cadets learn basic techniques on how to overcome the seven enemies of survival, which include fear and anxiety, cold and heat, thirst, boredom and loneliness, fatigue, hunger and pain and injury. It is important to
