The County of Vermilion River Firefighter’s Ball Cont. presentation. MLA Vermilion, Lloydminster, Dr. Richard Starke, presented medals to a number of individuals for On Friday evening, March 6, the Kits- 12 years of dedicated service. Also coty Community Hall was full as Fire- honoured were over 60 recipients of fighters from all over the County of Vermilion River and guests gathered for the 2015 Annual Firefighter’s Ball.

The evening began with a welcome by Vermilion River County Fire Chief, Orest Popil, which was followed by the Firefighters Prayer. Popil said, “It’s a night of celebration for county volunteers, which we have eight departments, and also we have Lloyd rescue which supports us on the east side of the county. Between the county we have 150 volunteers plus 22 from Lloydminster. Our county has 60 professional firefighters that volunteer and we are training more all the time.

We push our individuals very hard in the training and we also honour it. Last year we answered over 400 calls just in the county, every day we have someone going lights and sirens to an emergency somewhere in the county.”

three times and my goal is to go to the 2018 Olympics.” Grayson is 18 years old and started skating at 4 years old.

Madison Ferguson from the Vermilion Figure Skating Club gave an excellent performance. Madison said she practices three times a week. “I just always want to figure skate.” Madison is in Grade 4 at St. Jeromes School and she says that one day she too dreams of going to the Olympics.

The Lloydminster Border Edges skated on to the ice to a rendition of Grease Lightening.

Amanda Weaver from the Border Edges said, “We have been together for two years and we will be competing in the Nationals in Calgary in April.”

Local to Global 2015, the Eastern Alberta Trade Corridor Forum (EATC) took place March 4 to 5 at the Vermilion Regional Centre. Between 70 to 100

elected officials, staff and businesses gathered and networked to discuss new tools to attract investment. The EATC is a joint initiative between Northeast Alberta Information HUB (Alberta HUB), Battle River Alliance for Economic Development (BRAED), and Palliser

Dr. Richard Starke said, “Alberta is looking at a seven billion shortfall compared to last year, oil has gone down since September and is now at the lowest is has been since 1997 and 1998. We are looking at a downturn that will last for two to three years.” He also said that now is the time to invest in infrastructure. “There are still pipeline projects in place that will not be affected by the downturn.” He said that the new pipeline to the Gulf Coast was good news for Alberta and that, “It is a time of transition and the government has to transition. The government and energy have to work together to restore Alberta’s economic health.”

Has Spring Sprung Finally Lorna Hamilton Editor

After a long Winter everyone is hoping that Spring is finally on its way. I am an avid weather watcher and I have been keeping a close eye on the temperatures for the next couple weeks and, while according to The Weather Network, there is some snow showing up in the weather forecast.

The tem peratures are showing as above zero, actually they are in the low plus side. I am hoping the snow will turn to rain or even better sunshine.

Mother Nature has a way of tricking us into believing that Spring is on the way like she did in the month of

January when we had perfect Springlike weather and then in the blink of an eye, she quickly tossed us back down into the deep freeze and made us battle yet again, a pile of snow and cold temperatures.

My friend in Vancouver is posting pictures on Facebook of apple blossoms, tulips, trees beginning to bloom and of people already playing volleyball on the beaches. I have to admit it makes me somewhat jealous to see the beautiful weather they are having while I sit here with about two feet of snow in my front yard, icy road conditions and sloppy snow/water puddles everywhere you try to step.

I know if the temperatures continue t o s t ay a b o v e f r e e z i n g t h e s n o w will quickly melt and the streets will become clear from the melting ice and

snow, but I am beginning to become a little impatient for Spring to actually come and stay as I am not a Winter person at all.

Could this be the beginning of our Spring here in Vermilion? I certainly hope so.

This past weekend the time changed to the daylight savings time and even though I had lost an hour of sleep Sunday morning and the mornings will be a little darker for a little while, I am grateful for the longer evenings. I am at work all day long and can only view the nice sunny days from the window or through the open door on the rare occasion until it warms up more.

I a m h a p py t h at n ow w i t h m o r e daylight hours in the evening, I can go out and enjoy some nature after work and not have to do it in the dark.

I am like a bear during Winter, I pretty much hibernate and only venture out into the cold and dark when it is necessar y to do so. I become less energetic in the Winter so the thought of Spring being just around the corner has lifted my spirits and has given me something to look forward too. Walks in the park with the puppies, evening spent on the deck having barbeques, being able to go for a drive after work and not have to be in a rush trying to get back home before the dark and temperatures dropping making the roads icy again.

Hopefully Spring has sprung! and Mother Nature will not take away our glimmer of hope away and toss us back into Winter one last time.

Letter To The Editor Debate Fairly Please I’m writing in response to the letter by Lil Kohn published in last week’s edition (Mar 2) about the question of extra funding for one of our local doctors. I am not going to weigh in on the debate, as, frankly, I don’t really know enough about it. I do, however, read the columns and letters about the subject with great interest to try to inform myself on the facts. I was dismayed, therefore, to read one particular sentence in Lil Kohn’s letter, “Unfortunately, our elected officials of Vermilion and the town administrators DO NOT work for the greater good of our community”.

I understand that emotions are running high on this issue, but I must take great exception to this sweeping statement about the intent of our public servants in Vermilion. I, for one, am extremely grateful for the work they do on my behalf. I do find their efforts to keep our streets plowed, our garbage picked up, our water running, our sewage treated, our by-laws enforced (and I could go on) as thoroughly for the greater good of this community. I think they work very hard, and that they try their best to get the facts on all sides of issues when making difficult decisions. While any person may

Dear Editor Horrifically, as we have seen in Canada, the international jihadist movement has declared war on us. Canadians are being targeted by these terrorists simply because they hate our society and the values it represents.

One only need to look back over the past several weeks at the terrorist attacks in Ottawa and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu as well as attacks abroad in Australia and Paris, to see that the threat of radical Islamic extremism is a very real threat.

These threats require a strong response.

That is why, under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our Conser vative Government took action and brought forward the Protection of Canada from Terrorists Act and Antiterrorism Act 2015, that protects Canadians against jihadi terrorists who seek to destroy the very principles that make Canada the best country in the world to live.

As Prime Minister Harper clearly said,

our Government rejects the argument that every time we talk about security, our freedoms are threatened. Canadians understand that their freedom and security go hand in hand. Canadians expect us to protect both, and there are protections in this legislation to do exactly that. The fundamental fact is that our police and national security agencies are responsible for protecting our rights and our freedoms, and it is jihadi terrorists who endanger our security and who would take away our freedoms.

Providing national security agencies with new tools will ensure that gaps in sharing information about suspected terrorists does not limit their ability to prevent attacks on Canada or against Canadians. We as politicians do not enforce the law, but we have the duty to make sure that law enforcement has the necessary tools to keep Canadians safe.

We will continue to do just that.

Around The Campfire

The old saying “March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb” just may be suitable for March now that we are here. It did come in somewhat like a lion. It was great to see the sunrise this morning, most would have seen it on their way to work, however that drive to work may get dark again for several weeks as this weekend, March 8, is daylight saving time once again.

At 2 a.m. on Sunday morning we will m ove t h e c l o c ks ah ead o n e h our, however for the unprepared we will also lose one hour of sleep, which is too easy…sleep in an extra hour its Sunday.

On Monday the drive to work may be dark however, when most get home after work the sun will still hopefully be shining brightly as we will get that extra hour of sunlight in our day.

Then within a couple of weeks as the days get longer, we will also see the morning sun earlier and earlier.

I really like this daylight savings and wish this just would remain our standard time.

Daylight savings not only gives us more wonderful sunlight in our day but also saves us money and energy due to less lights and heat in the evening.

I can’t wait until I can shoot outdoors again and just to enjoy and have fun.

Recently I was asked when I started s h o o t i n g a b ow a n d w h at g o t m e started. That was an interesting question that made me think.

As a youngster my father was a “Forest Warden” much like Fish and Wildlife, police, judge and jury back then, and we were transferred and stationed in a lot of small Alber ta communities. I learned a lot from the local natives in these communities.

As a youngster we used to go camping for days on end, which if kids that young did that now days, ever yone including the coast guard would be called in for the search and rescue.

For us youngsters a bow was for fun, adventure, food, and protection most likely in that order, with fun being the emphasis, well until we got hungry.

We had at best a c an of beans, knife, five feet of fishing line and a couple hooks and whatever we could hunt or gather. Fish was always on the menu and they were plentiful then, for some reason I remember camps being nowhere near fish bearing lakes or rivers.

We always ended up just near small creeks or pond s. There may have been fish there but we always went for rabbits and squirrels for lunch, w h i c h wer e a l ways p l e nt i f u l a l s o.

Of course we were so young we prob-

a b l y s h o u l d n ot eve n h ad k n i ve s, but we all did like youth today having cell phones. If a young ster today walked around with a big blade knife they would lock him up.

Anyway once camp was set up and fire going, a bow with arrows was first thing on the list. We didn’t get too elaborate, survival-style bows made of popular was easiest and worked actually the best for weeks.

Once dried the bow were just firewood, arrows were made of Red Osier D o g wo o d will ows. We s have d t h e arrows and kept the bark for the older natives that used it for medicine and a tobacco additive.

Arrow heads were nails pounded into a tip and flattened with rocks and empty shell casings for blunts… or simply a tip of an arrow burnt in the campfire to hardened and then scraped sharp.

The survival styles bows were just a built bare shaft with no type of feathers or vanes. We could nail squirrels 15 yards up a tree with deadly accuracy.

Weight for ward was the key there!

I was so young I don’t even remember building my first bow or even for that matter who taught me, but the bow meant as much lunch and survival as the cell phone and Mc Donald’s is now!

I don’t remember what we used for the first strings although, I picture sinew.

However, later on I remember the best strings were binder twine used to tie

down every shipping box then. Years later in my teens I remember having a store built, I’m sure a fibreglass bow, than a nice take down wood recurve.

Then I lef t the archer y scene for a while…girls and stuff don’t you know.

I m arr ie d young an d had a family and around the same time in the 70’s these new-fangled compound bows started coming out. I bought one with fun, adventure, food, and protection in mind.

The protection would be if life and limb were threatened while pursuing an adventure, food with a new family became a priority as my own youngsters grew up. To this day fun and adventure rules. L ast year I wrote about sitting in a misty valley watching the sun rise on the first day of bowhunting season, as a huge bull elk materialized like a ghost and walked towards me. I sat there and watched him walk right by, broadside at ten yards. He stopped there and experienced the morning as I was and as he walked by, I let him do exactly that.

Now that was fun!

When the Smoke clears With March here the first day of spring is March 20, however the first spring day can happen at any time!

Let’s Talk About Wolves Just the other day I was asked about wolves. Had I ever heard them howl or had I ever had any experience in the wild country involving wolves? Well, yes I have and any time you hear or see them, the sound and sight really can leave you breathless.

Wolves are the essence of wilderness and to hear them howl brings all the magic of that your way!

You can hear coyotes locally and for some reason their calls, though from wild untamed animals, don’t in anyway give you the same feeling of complete loneliness and being so vulnerable.

The first time I had the thrill of hearing wolves howling was in a little log trappers cabin about 35 kilometers south east of Edson, close to a creek that drains from Wolf Lake and runs to the McLeod River.

We’d had a morning hike and observed that there were wolves following almost every game track and all the game were in high-speed mode! We were having a lunch break, eating soup when I became conscious of a sound like a truck in a low gear climbing up a long hill. Like a gear whine teamed with a low-key siren. To say

it got your attention would be like saying being shot at sometime by surprise would!

Well anyway, one howl started and then another, and another chimes in until a whole chorus was harmonizing together. It was spectacular! I guess they were letting us know they knew we were there.

In the course of our hunt there for about a week, they howled off and on day and night. It was a full moon and we never had much luck as the game was sure spooked. We never saw a wolf but they kept reminding us of their presence.

On another hunt out west of Fox Creek

by Tony Tower Forestry Look-out we were camped in a location near where there had been a sawmill site that had left a huge pile of saw dust behind. Walking out each day past this pile we noticed that the wolves had taken to climbing up the long slope of the pile and sliding down the sharp drop side. You could see a beaten path where they would repeatedly climb up to slide down. They sure seemed to be having fun.

About a half mile from there, my brother in-law, John Wasylik and I managed to down a moose and we dragged it to the sawmill clearing. John wanted to skin the animal and quarter it so that’s what we did. We had folded the hide and had laid the moose head on top. We wrapped the

Next morning on passing the place where we dressed out our moose we found the hide all stretched out with tooth marks indicating they had been playing tug-o-war with it. The head had been used like a football it looked like and you could see they were like playing catch with it.

I wanted to go to the saw dust pile with my varmint caller and try my luck calling those wolves, but didn’t want to go alone and couldn’t get any takers to come along. Never got to go and have always wished I had.

During all that time though, we never heard them howl even once. They sure are a mystery.

One time when Bill McGrath and I were hunting elk south of Alder Flats we

trailed a herd of elk that decided to head out across a burned open area. We made several hundred yards I guess when it became obvious that the dead fall and distance were beyond our abilities and we decided to retrace out steps. Reaching the edge of the burn, we came to a dead fall log with the fresh snow on it, indicating a wolf track. You could see where it had its front feet up on the log obviously poised there looking at us as we walked out there and leaving as we returned. We followed our tracks back and that wolf had followed us about a mile. I’ll tell you, it gave me an eerie feeling to know he’d been watching us for so long.

Like I say they are a mystery and it’s their wildness that makes wilderness wild!

There is a film with the recurring scene of a man in his elder years riding his lawnmower along the side of the road. Some of the roads are freeways. Some are dusty country roads. He rides through rural communities and he rides through cities. People gawk. At least once during the long journey-----I can’t recall now how far he travels, but it’s far-----the lawnmower breaks down and a stranger assists him with getting it repaired.

Hospitable strangers also invite him to stay for a few days while he waits for the parts needed to repair his lawnmower so that he can get on his way again.

During his stay over, as you might expect, there are questions. People ask him, what the----why are you riding a lawnmower across the country? The man quietly tells them. It’s been twenty, thirty---maybe it’s even been fifty----it’s been many years since he’s talked to his brother but he’s made a decision. It’s time. It’s time to forgive his brother for whatever it was he’d done to create the rift between them. What was it again? No matter. It’s time. Before one of them dies.

Wildlife Management Public Meeting Marie Conboy Reporter

On Tuesday evening, March 17, 2015 at 7 p.m. Fish and Wildlife, Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) are inviting the public to a wildlife management public meeting at the Vermilion Regional Center.

The meeting says that it aims to discuss the management of wildlife including ungulate population estimates, permit numbers and Chronic Wasting Disease for wildlife management units in the Provost/Wainwright and Vermilion/Lloydminster areas.

Chronic wasting disease, CWD, is a contagious disease. Unlike BSE, which cattle can develop after eating contaminated feed, CWD is spread from animal to animal including both farmed and wild deer and elk. At present research is being done to establish if vaccinations can prevent the

disease, instead of using other methods to contain it.

Residents living and hunting in areas deemed to be CWD areas by the Fish and Wildlife are upset over the culling program.

They believe culling deer herds will have little effect on the spread of CWD but would eliminate hunting grounds and hurt local economies. The Fish and Wildlife division, believe that culling populations is the only way to control the spread of this disease in infected areas.

MLA Vermilion-Lloydminster and retired veterinarian, Dr. Richard Starke said on Saturday, “The research that is being done is important to establish how wide spread the disease is.” He also said he is aware that research is being done to establish prevalence and practice with regard to control and monitoring of CWD. He also said he is not aware of what will be brought out during the course of the meeting.

Vermilion Rotary club is a well known and worthy local organization and the club will be celebrating their 60th anniversary this year on April 12.

Brenda Lee, co-chair of the Rotary garage sale project, said “There has been tremendous support from the Vermilion community over the last eight years since the sale has been in existence. People are so generous with their donations. The quality and quantity of the goods donated and the desire to support the Rotary and its initiatives have been overwhelming over the years.” The Vermilion community is being invited to donate any items they may have which they will no longer use, for the sale. The club are accepting all donations, except clothes and TVs. The great thing about this project is that all funds raised go back into the Vermilion community. In past years the Rotary club has made generous and worthwhile contributions with the proceeds raised, including $5,000 to the Cadets Armouries Drill hall for new flooring and $5,000 to the Westend Manor for renovation of the common area. The club confirmed that $5,000 from this year’s garage sale has been committed to the Vermilion Museum.

The Rotary club has built up alliances with several ‘leftover partners’ who can also benefit after the sale is over, saving as many items from landfills as possible.

‘Leftover partners’ include the Community Closet, Islay Health Center Garage Sale, Books for Belize, Habitat for Humanity (Restore), Lloydminster SPCA, 4H Electronics Recycling program and Canadian Diabetes Society.

The club is excited to announce that this year they were approached by Youth Orchestra Northern Alberta to be on the lookout for donated musical instruments for the underserved youth music program.

“So if anyone has any old musical instrument or instruments they will never use, why not donate it to a child that can learn how to play music on it.” Brenda added.

First Hockey Tournament For Innisfree In A Decade

The ranfurly Posse Hockey round-up The Ranfurly Posse hockey team played host of the Innisfree Hockey tournament on February 28 through March 1. This was the first hockey tournament to be played in the natural-ice arena in approximately ten years.

The Innisfree Agri-Plex was busy during the weekend of February 28 and March 1 as the first men’s recreational hockey tournament in approximately ten years was held. Hosted by the Ranfurly Posse hockey team and sponsored by the Wasylciw Rodeo Ranch, the event saw four teams compete in a friendly, yet competitive tournament. In the B final event it was the host team, Ranfurly Posse, who took on the Buffalo Coulee Sabres which ended in a win for the Posse. The A event between the Innisfree Labatt Blues and the Ryley Renegades saw the hometown team slam the Renegades in a run-away game of goals. Credit Union 72nd Annual General Meeting Submitted

The seventy second Annual General Meeting was held March 2 at the Vermilion Regional Centre. Membership and guests were greeted and registration was followed by the introduction of guests and the annual meeting.

The Credit Union reported another strong financial year despite a low interest environment with a net income of $1,016,371 which is an increase of $173,963 over the prior year.

The membership, by way of dividends on common shares, received a rate of seven per cent and the total payout for 2014 was $383,725.

Since the inception year of 1999, Vermilion Credit Union has returned $3,798,885 in Common Share and Patronage distributions to its members. Vermilion Credit Union contributed over $35,000 through community sponsorship to service groups,

clubs, the arts, education, sports, charitable and other organizations in Vermilion and surrounding areas during their 2014 fiscal year. In addition, proceeds in the amount of $10,500 from the Annual Charity Golf tournament were donated equally to the Innisfree Public Library, Vermilion Public Library and Mannville Centennial Library. David Eremko, CEO, proudly stated that in addition to these monetary donations, the Credit Union staff had also volunteered in excess of 1,000 hours to sports teams, school events, and a variety of other community events.

The Earn Break fast, in conjunc tion with the EATC forum took place on Thursday, March 5. Guest speaker Corey Poirier spoke to a large crowd on “The Productivity Factor”.

C o r e y, P r o f e s s i o n a l K e y n o t e Speaker, Entrepreneur and Corporate Customer Service and Sales Training Specialist, started off the breakfast by asking the audience, “Does your To Do List look like…everything?” He encouraged people to be proactive instead of reactive.

From his findings after inter viewing many high achievers, he found that most successful people take one hour per day for themselves to spend 20 minutes reading, 20 minutes exercising and 20 minutes meditating. He calls this the one hour of power. “If you watched Ted Talks everyday for one hour for a year it would change your life” he said. He said controlling your time management is vital for successful productivity. This includes monitoring the amount of time spent on your mo bile phone and c he c k ing email throughout the day.

The Baking Robots Update

The Vermilion baking robot boys were in Neilburg, SK competing at the Battle of the Border and finished in first place and went undefeated at the competition. They also took home the Excellence Award, and first place in programming skills as well as driver control. They attended the international competition in Vancouver on Saturday March 7, consisting of attendants who were all winners of their provincial finals. The boys were the youngest and they worked hard to end up in thirteenth place after the qualifying rounds! They were selected to work with the fourth place team in the finals (each match places two robots against two robots in alliances), and they were down to the last four teams standing when they lost out in the semi finals! The boys were rewarded with winning the “Rookie of the Year” award for the Pacific Northwest Regional Championship in the A division. We are so proud of these two boys, and so humbled by the generosity of this community!!!! Submitted Kim Morritt.

Recent record yields and transpor tation backlogs have increased interest in on-farm storage options. “ There are many dif ferent storage options available, either temporar y or permanent,” says Todd BergenH e n e n g o u we n , p r o j e c t a s s i s t a n t , Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), Edmonton. “The two most popular options are steel grain bins (either c orrug ated or smooth walled with or without hoppers) and grain bags. Other options are sheds, producer owned grain elevators, grain rings, piles and bunkers.”

The last 10 years have seen bin prices climbing, says Bergen-Henengouwen. “In 2004, the average corrugated hopper bottom was priced at $2.50/bushel while in 2014 it is close to $4.00/bushel. With the price increase and the need for unexpected grain storage producers have been looking at grain baggers as a viable option.”

Grain baggers are useful in situations when: the land is either rented or leased and investment in permanent storage is not desired the operator only needs to store grain for a short period of time, or has plans to exit the business in a few years there is limited labour and trucking available during harvest land is located long distances apart

storing low quality crops such as feed wheat, barley and sample canola grain is dry and has no need to be dried or aerated there is plastic recycling in the area there is a need to store large volumes of grain “Having developed a partial budget to compare bins from baggers it was found that operations need to store more than 70,000 bushels of grain per year to make the bagger economical competitive to bins,” says BergenHenengouwen.

Baggers have their disadvantages as storage is temporary and damage can occur to the plastic either through wildlife, trees or human damage (snowmobiles). Once the bag is exposed to the elements, grain spoilage and pest and wildlife damage and losses can occur. As well, the plastic is difficult to roll after the grain has been emptied and recycling is limited.

“Choosing the right grain storage system can be difficult decision for an operation but by looking at total costs, the farm’s future plans, existing systems and labour availabilit y producers can narrow down the best option for them,” adds Bergen-Henengouwen.

Lakeland To Host Ag-Citing And Little Royal 2015 Submitted

T h e Ve r m i l i o n c a m p u s w i l l b e bustling with activity and visitors March 13 to15 when Lakeland College hosts Ag-Citing and Little Royal. Prospective students will learn about Lakeland’s agricultural sciences programs on Friday, March 13 at the Ag-Citing Info Session. With mini-labs, tours a n d c l a s s - t y p e ac t i v i t i e s, p ar t i c i pants will find out how they can ‘Live the Learning’ at Lakeland. “Ag-Citing highlights the hands-on components that prospective students will get to do, the decisions that they will get to make and how all of that ties together from a program perspective. Throughout the day they can visit with our team

and meet our current students who will help to demonstrate and show them some of things that they will get to do when they are a student here,” says Darrell Hickman, chair of agricultural sciences. “ There is so much that goes on during the day and over the weekend that they can really get a feel for our culture. That’s one of the things that I think as young agriculture people they will appreciate. It makes them feel at home and provides a sense of belonging.” The Little Royal tradition continues from March 13 to 15 with a number of exciting and fun events. Little Royal opens with a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m. followed by the twenty-seventh annual Western Canadian Judging Competition featuring 4-H and colle-

giate judges at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13. Demos from the Agility Club and Stock Dog Club will follow later in the day along with a Ranch Rodeo in the evening.

The three-day event continues on Saturday, March 14 with the Stockman’s Club Steer and Heifer Open and Junior Show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by the Little Royal Rodeo at 7 p.m. Saturday events conclude with the evening dance in the gymnasium at 10 p.m. Little Royal will wrap up on Sunday with the final rodeo per formance at 2 p.m. For the complete schedule of Little Royal events and times, please visit lakelandcollege.ca.

Andrew was the visionary who pinned a notice to the Vermilion School of Agriculture (VSA) bulletin board 88 years ago announcing the Little Livestock International on March 23, with the grand sum of $22 up for grabs in four classes. From these initial classes – livestock Little Royal began in 1927 a s L i t t l e L i ve s t o c k I n t e r n a t i o n a l .

Much more than a livestock show, Little Royal expanded to classroom demonstrations and general exhibits of class projects ranging through blacksmith tools and wood working to muffins and gowns. The tradition was revived in 1986 and again included Lakeland student displays and livestock shows. The Little Royal Rodeo, part of the intercollegiate circuit, was an added feature at the revival.

Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships Ready To Go In Vermilion Submitted

Vermilion – The Vermilion Minor Hockey Association is proud to host the 2015 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championship for the Midget Female B division.

The tournament starts on March 19, and continues through Sunday, March 22. Games will be played at the Vermilion Stadium and Arena, located at 5510 College Dr, Vermilion AB. Ten teams will be participating at the Provincial Championships, including the host Vermilion Agland Tigers, Midget Female Team. The teams will be vying for a spot in the finals on Sunday, and a chance to win the provincial crown.

A special thank-you goes out to all those involved in supporting the tournament, to the business community, to our Vermilion

area hockey families for your overwhelming support and sponsorship, and to the volunteers whose tireless work will make this event a memorable success.

Brian M. Jean Wildrose Party Candidate Says, “Albertans Deserve Better”

Brian M. Jean QC announced Thursday afternoon, March 6, at Sammy’s restaurant in Vermilion, that he is seeking the leadership of the Wildrose party come March 28.

He said, “I believe I am the best person for the job because of my 10 year experience as a federal member of parliament, I have the experience from Ottawa as parliamentary secretary for six years dealing with the $45 billion economic action plan, which was the largest economic action plan that Canada ever invested in. Jean, a lawyer and business owner from Fort McMurray, said “I’m 52 years old, I have a passion for Alberta, I love Alberta and I think I would do a great job.” Jean, said on the current downturn, “We have a spending problem, the PC party could have balanced the books before this but they are spending money like crazy.

They have squandered away tens of billions of dollars of wealth from the oil sands and we only have 4 million people in the whole province.” He also said that Albertan’s

spend more money on health care than anywhere else in the country. He said to get out of the current downturn, “We have to try to balance the economy. We have a bloated civil service especially at the top,” he said that is where cuts should be made, not to the front line services.

Doris was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Helen Connochie, sister Mary Fortin and brother James Dixon.

The memorial service for Doris was conducted from the McCaw Funeral Chapel, Lloydminster, Alberta on December 4, 2014.

Thirteen eager students have been cooking up a storm on Thursdays during February and March in our after-school Cooking Club being run by Mrs. Denise Campbell. The chefs are becoming more confident in the kitchen as they gain practice following recipes, measuring, chopping, mixing, and -best of all- tasting! Recipe selections have been varied including pizza, tacos, spinach salad, biscuits, black bean brownies, apple cider, cookies, fried bananas – just to name a few.

In social our Kinderkids will be learning about respect and how we can demonstrate respect for ourselves and others while appreciating the unique characteristics, interests and talents of others.

The Grade 3 class would like to thank everyone who supported their Cupcake Sale. They raised $209.They have supported two business loans with KIVA for two individuals living in Peru and Ecuador who cannot otherwise obtain a loan. When the loans are repaid, they will reinvest the money into further loans.

The Grade 3 students have also been conducting many tests and experiments in their “Testing Materials and Designs” science unit. It has been a fun, hands-on unit and they are on their way to becoming engineers!

Sportsmanship is often referred to as the “golden rule” of sports. It is not just reserved for the people in the game. It encompasses the cheerleaders, fans and parents as well.

These individuals need to be aware of how they behave during competition. Sportsmanship is a style and an attitude, and can have a positive influence on everyone involved.

Games Club will continue in March every Tuesday at lunch recess. So far the turnout has been great. The VIBE Youth Advisory have shown fantastic leadership skills in running all sorts of games, providing assistance, being an extra player, teaching how to play various games and more. Thank you to the VIBE members for volunteering their time.

Intramurals continue to be floor curling for the month of March. Next month, students will have the opportunity to take part in Skipping and LEGO during noon hours.

We are very excited to share that we have been awarded the grant to host Marty Chan in VES from March 16-20. Mr. Chan is an accomplished author, story teller, and a funny guy. Using their personal experiences as a springboard, students will learn to write a short story. Every class will be able to take part in his writing workshops, with the focus on Grade 3 and 6 students. Grades 1, 2, 4, 5, and kindergarten will each have a 40 minute block during the week. Grade 3 will have four 40 minute classes and Grade 6 will have four 80 minute classes. Mr. Chan hopes to inspire students to continue writing. The last time he was here, the students became very excited about their writing, wanting to make larger stories and add lots of detail in their writing.
