W i t h l a s t Wednesday being Pink Day, the day w h e n c i t ize n s o f our community joined together to try and bring awareness to the issue of bullying.

It was a great pleasure to go around town and see so many people sporting the bright pink shirts from this year and years of past.

The Voice helped out with the selling of T-shirts and hoodies for VIBE. The response was overwhelming, as we sold them in just a couple days and had people coming in on pink day still look-

ing for shirts after we were sold out.

O ur pink d ay ad ver tisements in which five dollars of each sale went to VIBE was a great success and the participation from local and area businesses was exceptional. We would like to thank each and every one of them.

T he org anizer s of t he Pink Day campaign need to get huge recognition for all the effort and time they put into such an event as it raises much awareness to the issues and problems surrounding bullying not only in schools, busses and playground but also in the workplace.

During pink day it was amazing how many people actually opened up in conversation regarding times in which they themselves had to face the occurrence of being bullied. I heard stories

of how as children in school they were bullied by other classmates, how in the workplace they faced times when they felt like a victim of bullying and also stories of how some who were bullied actually took the stance against their bully and in doing so become a bully themselves. I am not saying that all people who take the problem of being bullied into their own hands ends up being a bully, I do believe that sometimes a child or adult who is the victim of bullying do need to stand up and face a bully as it does often work.

Pink Day brought about a lot of conversation in schools and gave the students the opportunity to talk with other classmates about the subject.

When asked my daughter, a student at JR Robson, said that she estimated

at least 70 per cent of the students in her school were wearing some form of pink shirt in support of Pink Day. Could one consider this a measure of success?

I think so! If Pink Day brought about awareness to even one child or adult the issues and dilemmas surrounding bullying, or helped one child who may be struggling with a situation of bullying I think the campaign did exactly what it was meant to do.

So why not make every day Pink Day in our everyday lives? Why not take the opportunity each and every day to lend a helping hand to someone who may need it. Our community should take the success of last Wednesdays Pink Day and keep the trend going when ever and where ever it may be needed.

Clarification Last week It was stated the Knights of Columbus Breakfast was the third Sunday of each month, when in fact it is actually the last Sunday of each month in the months of September to April except for December.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, As a member of Vermilion and surrounding areas, I ask that you at least read the following concerns. At the present time, one of our doctors, namely Dr. Maulud is facing a crisis. Maybe you are of the opinion that you don’t like Dr. Maulud or you have not had a satisfactory health encounter with her or you SIMPLY DON’T CARE. However, I ask that you be diplomatic enough to read the rest of my view point.

I wish to remind all of you that we have had quite a number of doctors come and then GO. No doubt, they have had various reasons for leaving Vermilion, but Dr. Maulud doesn’t want to leave her Vermilion practice. Her family like it here. She, her husband and children think they would like to continue making Vermilion their HOME in CANADA. Isn’t that exactly what we need in Vermilion; doctors that are willing to stay? doctors that want to continue looking after their patient clientele? These patients have established a trusting relationship with Dr. Maulud, if she leaves where will they go?

The non-supporters may say that these people could go to the next new doctor that MAY come along to Vermilion only to stay till his or her three year contract expires. The sad truth of the matter arises that not only do some of our physicians leave Vermilion for greener pastures but in the big picture they get dismayed by the politics of the attitudes of the recruitment members and the town bureaucracy. Unfortunately, our elected officials of Vermilion and the town administrators DO NOT work for the greater good of our community.

The fact that Dr. Maulud has put forward that she needs another $2000 per month to successfully practice for the GOOD of her patients is not setting a precedent. This amount is required for the next three years.

As per her request, the total cost to the

town would be $75 000. Is it too much to ask everyone to state honest facts!

REMEMBER everyone, that she had to set up her own medical clinic which means she was soley responsible for all the incurred necessary expenses. I know for a fact that she received unfair treatment from the operating administrators at the time of her departure. I saw for myself how agitated she was over the unfair proceedings of a misunderstanding that had come up for her.

When the doctors operate out of the clinic, the expenses are split among however many are there. The Town now owns the clinic. I would venture a guess that ALL the necessary expenses, improvements or adjustments of any kind are looked after without any hesitation, So all the doctors that are operating or would do so in the future should have no reason to request any additional financial help.

So can we not accept that Dr. Maulud’s request is quite logical. Oh sure, doctors are paid a fair wage by Alberta Health Care and I’m sure some of you will scoff at the idea that she may need financial assistance. I’m not irrational in my way of thinking that I would soundly endorse our local administrators of various stripes to encourage Dr. Maulud or any other physician to get richer at the taxpayer’s expense. Without any doubt, Len and I cannot afford to pay any big increase to our “taxes,” but I ask that the town council, administration, county council members and concerned citizens address this truly important issue before we lose one more doctor to another community that will be only too glad to treat her with the utmost financial support and kindness. Our Mayor points out that we cannot compete with another hospital plus clinic location because it would set a precedent. Oh really!

How ironical. So buying the Webb & Sons automotive property for the healthy price of

VERMILION VOICE

$1,350,000 is not setting a precedent.

The Mayor and town council maintain that the idea of having the three protective services together in one location would be truly beneficial. I’m sure there was some “behind the scenes” discussions as to the validity of such a proposal. So then it could happen again in the future where a local business would present their location as a very viable piece of real estate for Vermilion to purchase. So I think we all have to be very cautious with the word “precedent” in any discussion.

I encourage everyone to think and act judiciously in regard to Dr. Awatef Maulud’s situation. Be fair and put aside any negative feelings, suspicious ideas about her financial affairs or discriminatory perceptions.

Let’s consider carefully the pros and cons of the BIG PICTURE of our doctor dilemma or the Alberta Health Services will have no qualms about making the Vermilion Hospital into an extended care facility.

Hello March! Nice month of the first day of spring, so happy to see you! Officially the first day of spring this year is March 20 already so soon, it was great to see old man winter taking it somewhat easy on us thus far.

Since we have been fortunate with the depth of snow compared to the last couple of years, I am going to head out antler shed hunting, rabbit hunting and puppy training this weekend.

Walking in the woods will be easy compared to even last year, however it is great exercise, both for me and a growing puppy whom has it’s “hyper full out” switch stuck. Meaning Miss Pickles is either bouncing off the walls or sleeping, no in between! And that is just fine as she has to be a puppy for a while. I have been just teaching her basics like “sit” ”stay” and “no” which she picked up quickly. This weekend, now that she has turned 15 weeks old we will get into a little heavier training. She answers well to commands such as “come here” both by vocal and a whistle I have been training her with since she was five weeks old.

She will be with me in the wilderness so I will teach her to “lay down” “stay laying” and “hide”. Now not the kind of hide where I turn around and she is nowhere to be found and it takes me the rest of the day to find her, but the

Around The Campfire kind of hide like the strategic hide of a predator, much like a cat that gets low and never takes its eye off whatever it is stalking, just in case we see wildlife. We don’t want wildlife harassed by a hyped out pup and also if our aim is hunting rabbits we don’t want her to chase the rabbits so far away I never get to see them, most of all I will want her to stay at my side without having to call for her every two minutes.

Ironically a dog actually loves to work and will be calmer plus listen and learn better, so just before I started writing this column today, I ordered several great training aids. One is a side-saddle backpack for dogs; she is going to be a pack dog. Now this is not going to be like the old days when dogs were expected to pack their own weight of gear on adventures. These are professional packs made for specific size and breeds of dogs. At 15 weeks her measurements are already in a medium pack but will be good up to an 80 pound dog, even if I have to make modifications later.

It’s amazing how a dog will change its demeanor when it has a pack on, they seem to know or relate to a pack as work so they are more concentrated.

Today’s recommendations are only approximately 25 per cent of the dogs weight in a pack system. Which for example an 80 pound dog that would be only 20 pound, however 20 pound could be a lot of gear.

I would just start out with several bottles of water, to even out both packs out on either side, some for her and

some for me. Of course there would be a bag of dry dog food and treats.

I also ordered several neat silicone rubber dog water/food bowls, they are full size bowls that fold down flatter than a pancake and most likely even weighs less, same bright green color as the packs are going to be. The bowls will fit in the packs and take up no room or add noticeable weight. In some areas water is scarce and not even safe for critters, and in winter although snow can be obtained, they need water when working. I may have to get a different color bowl for myself, one can actual boil water in a silicone rubber bowl if needed.

Miss Pickles would of course have to also pack out the rabbits of a successful adventure, with the knowledge she will acquire her share of “bunny Mc nuggets” or “bunny burgers”.

The packs are well designed with water bottle compartments both inside and out, a sturdy handle on top if one had to assist the pup over downfall trees or a mud puddle, plus there is a metal D-loop to hook up a leash if needed.

After a few outings she will gradually get used to the pack and hardly even notice it on adventures. The “working mode” keeps them more manageable close by and less likely to run off.

The pack system has a quick release where the packs will release from the harness system if one comes to a creek or water crossing, the packs when carried by the handle is very much like a small suitcase. This will also come

Dr. Maulud and Town council in Vermilion continued last week over refusal to meet the doctor’s requests.

Dr. Awatef Maulud, originally from Libya, and her family have been living in the house owned by the Town of Vermilion with subsidized rent for the past three years.

The contract is now up and Dr. Maulud has made contract renewal requests to the Town council if she is to continue to practice in Vermilion for the next three years. Town council has stated that Dr. Maulud is requesting $15,000 per year towards her clinic medical expenses and a further $14,400 per year in subsidized rent to continue living in the house owned by the Town of Vermilion.

The Town of Vermilion Council in response has said that Dr. Maulud’s requests are far too high and they cannot afford to pay that amount, also that they are always looking for new doctors and have held 5 interviews recently. Vermilion Mayor Bruce MacDuff said the town has a program through the doctor retention to pay new doctors $10,000 to help get situated but the Mauluds are asking for $75,000 from the Town of Vermilion tax payers to stay for the next three years. “Doctors have come and gone in Vermilion for the past 20 years. If the Alberta Health Services would sign doctors to longer contracts they probably wouldn’t be moving as much.” He also added, “If you liked it here and your business Photo Marie Conboy.

Although I use the pup as a reason for an outdoor adventure, you really don’t need a reason.

According to what I read, I understand that our natives believed that the land was there for t h e i r u s e a n d n o b o d y ow n e d a ny specific part of it. They never could understand the concept of it being owned, they may have fought over hunting areas and were territorial in that sense. Once the European explorers came and saw the rich furs they started trading for guns and knives, pots and etc. like booze, the natives suddenly needed all the trapping area they could in anyway control. Yeah, there was trouble!!

Once the natives were dissipated of their lands and relegated to reserves, the land was open and I guess ready fo r s e t t l e r s a b o u t t h e t u r n o f t h e century.

Well there you go, seems the land can be sold or used as a medium of

exchange after all.

Who said the land, or a river or anything else even the moon can’t be at least considered as something to be used in a particular way for profit.

Suddenly big companies like “Hudson Bay,” and C.P.R. own the land and are able to attract people to settle on it.

If you proved up a homestead, like broke some land, built a home and lived there, the privilege you paid ten dollars for, you could be in business as a farmer and end up owning a quarter of land. The fun of that soon paled for a lot of folks and after a few setbacks and crop failures, the homesteads were often put up for sale for whatever they could get and many people just headed back to town!!

My folks talked of being able to acquire land for forty cents an acre, but because there wasn’t the means to farm large acres then, it was a hard sell. There was lots of open land still available to turn your stock out on so you didn’t need to buy pasture.

The depression time took a toll on the farm population and left many farm

yards sitting vacant and forlorn.

Later during the war years it was r e a l l y d i f f i c u l t to a c q u ir e o r eve n repair the old equipment and even if the markets were good it was a challenge to produce an abundance of any crop, as I remember. Remember there wasn’t very much fertilizer, spray or such to help promote heavy crops, so it took a few years for the technology and bigger equipment together to farm better and increase yields.

Far m Cre d it C or p, c am e o n t h e scene and suddenly land prices exploded like a pop can and even with wild extremes of price and markets, the value of land began to be such that it couldn’t pay for itself. The prices I hear being paid now for rent are such that even that is a wonder how it can be paid, with any crop, Wow!! I’ve been reading through the text of Bill C-51 in order to gain some understanding about why there’s so much controversy surrounding it.

It’s introduced as: “An Act to enact the Security of Information Sharing Act and the Secure Air Travel Act, to amend the Criminal Code, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and to make related and consequential changes to other Acts.”

That our major protection and security agencies would only now, if the bill passes, be granted permission to share security-relevant information seems surprisingly inefficient in our high tech, instant communication world. That part of the proposed legislation is probably a welcome improvement for those charged with the task of protecting Canadian citizens from potential harm.

Wild Bill C-51 I’m working through this thing line by line, making notes so I can cross-reference all the amendments to existing Acts the text of Bill C-51 demands should it pass through every gate of parliamentary scrutiny intact. It’s a lot of work for an ordinary citizen, but when there’s so much alarm expressed by so many credible people in opposition to it, I think it significant enough for even Ollie and Opal Ordinary to pay attention and learn as much as possible.

The Globe and Mail this week published an article asking that Prime Minister Harper and his Conservatives not pass this Bill in its current state, citing a litany of problems with it. The article was endorsed by a list of twenty-two persons of noteworthy experience. They include four former Prime Ministers, five former Supreme Court Justices, three former Ministers of Justice, four former Solicitor Generals, three former members of the Security Intelligence Review Committee, one former Privacy Commissioner, one former Acting Privacy Commissioner, and a former Chairperson for the Committee

of Public Complaints Against the RCMP. They must harbour serious concerns to have rallied together and publicized their opposition to this bill.

The text of Bill C-51 spans about seventy-four pages, its content weaving significant changes into several of our laws and into how they can be enforced.

Critics of the bill highlight problems such as vagaries of definitions and lack of public oversight over the operations of our security agencies and how such lack might detrimentally affect the lives of private citizens. Should our legislators consider amendments to it? Have a look and inform yourself about what’s going on in your Parliament: http://www.parl.gc.ca/ HousePublications/. It’s important.

When you need a break from that, you might consider reviewing the Hansard Reports detailing the Parliamentary Debates occurring on February 19th and February 23rd (found under the Parliamentary Business tab) to get a sense of the tenor of the discussions between our parliamentarians. A non-government site that arranges the content in a more

reader-friendly format can be found here: http://openparliament.ca Debate over the bill was time limited by the majority Conservative government, leaving many MPs unable to voice concerns expressed to them by their constituents. At least one NDP MP pointed out that this limitation counts as the 88th time on record that the current Conservative government has invoked the procedure.

Bill C-51 is intended to address the very serious matter of our security. It’s a matter that warrants meticulous deliberation, consultation, and debate until we get it precisely right. Precision requires patience. Time. Yet, less than 30 days since it was first presented in the House of Commons, Bill C-51 has already passed First and Second Reading, and debate over it in the House is closed. It has now been sent for review by Parliamentary Committee where six out of ten members are also members of the Conservative caucus. Engineer, please apply brakes for the sharp curve up ahead.

Have you ever thought about the BIG move, have you mentally or physically prepared for that BIG move?

What is the BIG move? Perhaps it’s never been thought about until you are there.

Change- Loss- Grief As one ages one somewhat prepares of the BIG move, knowing there will be changes, some people even anticipating the loss, but is the grief response ever thought about?

The looking for the new place to replace the old (sometimes can be a mix of joy and sadness, looking at less physical work in the new residence but giving up the familiar). Then there is the dispersing of objects of memories of the past that has helped make each person who they are, the legacy to pass on.

Then there is the downsizing, when the mind is still remembering BIG, physically now having to think smaller.

One has to acknowledge there has been a physical change too, when one is no longer able to do what the memor y reminds that they could do at one time. The loss of physical and mental abilities contributes to the feeling of the grief response.

The BIG move means change in the social area also, perhaps a whole new environment, an area change.

Leaving old friends behind, the ones that memories were made with, and trying to find new friends and relationships can be difficult. What a loss. It is now more difficult to make friends, as there are no children to connect adults together ie. The rink. Moving to a new environment, where one is now a stranger and not someone who can say hello to all they meet as a neighbor and friend.

Already one has a feeling of isolation, loneliness and depression and the loss of energy trying to navigate their new environment and meet new people. Nobody explained or anticipated how difficult the BIG move could be.

To those who are preparing or in the BIG move, recognize there are changes happening all around you but within you also. Recognize the losses you are experiencing, even write them down, from giving up that flower vase that was your mother’s to the car and

the home or community.

Are you feeling different? Is there m o r e s ad n e s s, m o r e a n g er, m o r e illness, more wanting to be alone, more mental and physical tiredness and more fears? You are going through a lot of physical and emotional experiences now. Honor the fact that you are grieving.

Seek out someone you trust who will listen to your grief journey. Look for a counsellor to guide you through the grief journey and suggest some coping skills. Accept the journey and feelings you have and try to reach out to others who are facing similar situations (A Support Group).

Remember that the BIG move not only effects Seniors but any who face a BIG move whether it be as a result of job change, lack of work or other life circumstances and can take one on the same journey through grief.

May there be an understanding, an

acceptance about who you are and a peace about where you will be. Seek out suppor t and professional help when needed in your community.

Working hard is something that can be seen on a daily basis in Dewberry School. The students and staff continue to strive towards success on many levels. One of the things we endeavor to create is a bully free environment. Februar y 25 marked the annual national anti-bull ying day and our school recognized the monumental event by participating in the Pink Shir t Campaign. Not only did they wear pink but they shared inspiring, positive and feel good thoughts by writing them on the backs of each other’s pink shirts. What a great way to

Vermilion Allied Arts Coucil Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Here we are in 2015, having enjoyed 40 years of quality Allied Arts performances in Vermilion! Wonderful music and drama selections have come to our stage for these past years, giving everyone in Vermilion and surrounding area the opportunity to enjoy the arts side of life. Fortunately, Vermilion has enjoyed this richness for 40 years, and hopefully has a future of many more years of cultural activities and entertainment.

Come join us for our March 14 celebration of Allied Arts in our community. This will be an opportunity to look back over the past years’ performances and applaud the people who broke ground for the arts to exist and thrive these past four decades.

Series ticket holders are invited to 6:30 wine and cheese, displays from past performances, live music, and wonderful reminiscing about favorite shows. Please join us to help us celebrate!

Although officially incorporated as a society in February 1975, the first roots of an Allied Arts group stretch back to the fall of 1974. Bob Alexander and Art Boggs met to discuss the possibilities of such a group. A month later, in November, they held another meeting. In January of 1975 the group was born and a charter was

received on January 25.

One of the first undertakings was a survey to determine what the cultural needs of the community were. By the fall, steps had been taken to satisfy those needs.

More music teachers were recruited, a dance teacher was found and handicraft courses started. Just one benefit was the increase in number of music students. In the fall of 1975 there were 44, the next fall more than 100, and in 1977 the increase continued to 115.

Nineteen seventy seven was a year of firsts. The first “Spring Festival of the Arts” was held on May 7. The first dance recital was a week later. The Vermilion Pottery Guild and the Vermilion Art Guild were formed in the fall and the Vermilion Community Band, that November.

While the Council participated in Alberta’s 75 celebrations in 1980, it also recognized another need in the community: a Music Festival. At first there were competitors only in piano, instrumental, vocal and speech. In 1990, dance was added and with increased numbers in all fields, the Vermilion Music Festival became a weeklong event.

By 1980, the Council leased the Morrison School to serve as Vermilion’s Cultural Centre. Today that centre no longer exists but it was the springboard for the four dance groups, and pottery and art clubs that have

their own sites today. In 1983, a scholarship fund was established to encourage local students pursuing careers in the arts.

Bringing live performing arts to the community has always been a part of the Allied Arts mandate. In 1983, an adult series and a children’s series were offered for the first time. In 1988, the new Lakeland College Alumni Theatre provided the opportunity to bring more quality programming however, it was soon evident that a grand piano and lighting were two top essentials that were missing. An agreement was made between the College and the Allied Arts Council that the Council would raise the funds if all the groups under the umbrella of the Council were able to use the theatre at moderate costs.

An appeal to the performing arts patrons, businesses, government and clubs realized the $30,000 for the piano and the $35,000 necessary for the lights. The College matched the amount for the lights and then the Council raised money for stage curtains. All of this groundwork has brought us to where we are today.

Today, due to the efforts of the Council in the past, our local dance groups and guest performers brought in by today’s Council perform in the marvellous Lakeland College Alumni Theatre. The Music Festival Association, the Art Club, and the Pottery Guild thrive as separate entities,

but have the pioneering Allied Arts Council to thank for their beginnings.

In 2014 the Allied Arts Council served as the umbrella organization for the very successful Alberta Culture days here in Vermilion. This opportunity allowed the Council to fulfill its mandate to ally the various arts and culture groups in our community. As a result, the Council is putting new emphasis on facilitating and profiling these groups in every way it can, plus we have 2015 Alberta Culture Days on our radar.

The fabulous mural on the Seniors’ Centre was part of the Alberta Culture Days initiative. Thanks to generous support from the community, we now have the Vermilion Mural Project as a new focus, with more murals in the works.

The mandate of the Council is to encourage and support visual, literary, and performing arts in Vermilion and district and to present professional performances in Vermilion. There will of course be challenges for the future, but with the support of the community it serves, the Vermilion Allied Arts Council will continue to meet those challenges. We exist because of dedicated, persevering people like Art Boggs, Linda Webb Jacobson, Brenda Ritz and other dedicated volunteers who were our trail blazers. To them, on behalf of our community we express our deepest gratitude.

Vermilion Boys Kadin and Rhys Going To The Worlds Marie Conboy Reporter

The Baking Robots got the big call and they will represent Alberta at The Worlds VEX Competition in Louisville, Kentucky in April and at the Pacific Northwest Regional Championship in Vancouver next week.

These two clever boys from Vermilion are going to attempt to conquer the world of robotics. Since they got the call the boys have been busy organizing fundraisers to cover the costs of their trip, they held a bake sale “Cookies for Cookie” Thursday February 26 at the Lakeland Mall.

The bake sale was a massive success and raised $2200.

Kadin’s mother, Kim Morritt said thank you to the Town of Vermilion, “Seriously folks, thank you just isn’t enough. You are all heroes in my book for helping two smart kids with one big honkin dream!”

The boys are busy planning logistics now for Cookie to travel. She cannot be larger than 18x18x18” as she’s heavy and needs something that can be easily carted around in on layovers.

Thus, the girls competed for different provinces.

Although the girls would never be forc ed to fig ht ag ainst eac h other because of their weight differences, i t m a d e f o r a n i n t e r e s t i n g c h e e ring section at the games as parents Nicole and Darcy, would have to cheer for both provinces.

After losing her first match Sydney had to battle her way back, facing the competition with a toe injur y, swollen knee and sore shoulder. Sydney’s

determination and drive helped her come away from the podium with the bronze medal, defeating B.C.’s Alexandra Gagnon.

Brette would climb her way through the competition winning every match, giving her a birth into the gold medal round and would face the tough Quebec fighter Yumi Bellali.

A slight error on Brette’s part would cost her the gold but still earned a very respectable silver medal for her and team Alberta.

Although the sisters competed for t wo dif ferent teams, they say they are good sparing partners and best friends and both are happy for each other’s wins and their parents say they are extremely proud of the girls.

10 Year Remembrance of Fallen RCMP Officer Cst. Anthony Gordon David Gamracy Submitted

This year will mark the tenth anniversary of the death of our son-in-law Anthony Gordon, a young man just 28 years of age, when he lost his life while on duty. He was tragically shot and killed on duty, near Mayerthorpe, Alberta on March 3, 2005.

Three other officers also lost their lives that day, Constables Brock Myrol, 29, Leo Johnston, 32, and Peter Schiemann, 25, when they were ambushed.

To this day, the Mayerthorpe incident was the worst one-day loss of life for the RCMP in 100 years.

Anthony Gordon was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He joined the Force in Red Deer and took his training at the Depot division in Regina, Saskatchewan on October 15, 2002. Anthony was then posted to the K Division as well as the Whitecourt Town

Detachment, where he worked in General Policing and Highway Patrol.

Anthony will always be remembered for his bravery in the memories and hearts of his loved ones, his fellow officers and countrymen. For, he paid the ultimate price that fateful day. He faced evil for all of us. More and more today, RCMP police officers have to face danger in the communities we live in.

On this anniversary, Anthony’s family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to RCMP Officers today. The RCMP are a vital part of everyday life and stand as a symbol of strength, integrity and the law in Canada and world-wide. They keep our roads, our communities and our country safe. Whether they are in their everyday blues or in full red-serge glory, they invoke a feeling of justice and safety.

They call themselves many things including: Childbirth Assistant, Labor Support Professional, Birth Assistant, Birth Companion, etc. A doula does not speak for a couple, provide medical or clinical skills, or act in any unprofessional manner (Most organizations have Policies that each doula must follow.). doulas mother the mother

In addition to medical care and the love and companionship provided by their partners, women need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid production took place February 28, 2015 in the Alumni Hall Theatre in Vermilion. The children recreated a magical underwater kingdom. Those who auditioned and were chosen spent the week prior to the play rehearsing and learning their lines. Crystal Jackson, Vermilion Allied Children’s Series Director, said “It’s been great to see the children progress from one day to the next. We have some brilliant and talented young performers this year, our ‘Ariel’, Cheradyn Bessette, was an amazing singer.” The production was directed by Cindy Millar and was supported by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Alberta Lottery Fund and the Vermilion Allied Arts Council. Local Metal Band Dahlmers Realm Headed On Tour Marie Conboy Reporter

Dahlmers Realm, the five piece metal band that formed in Mannville, is revved up for the United Legions Tour this April 6 through 29.

The new album they are launching on this tour is called “The Sun Never Sets On A Bad Ass”. Dahlmers will be supporting big acts Striker and Artillery on the tour

playing before 500 to 600 crowd venues.

They are really excited about their up and coming tour of the USA. They will leave April 6 and drive down to open in Los Angeles, California and plan to drive the entire tour across the United States as far as New Orleans. The trip will be 13,000 km in total and some cities they will hit on tour include Austin, Orlando, Tupelo, Denver and Salt Lake City.

Local bass player, Dale Myroniuk from Mannville said, “We’re really stoked for

the tour, there is a lot of big hype for our type of metal down in the States. Up and coming bands get picked up in the US twice as much by record label companies, we are really hoping for a deal.”

The band was formed 13 years ago with Myroniuk and Joey Schreyer. Addison Bartholomew joined eight years ago and Andy Martin joined in 2010. Dave Croteau is a touring vocalist. Some of the

big bands they opened for over last few years include Protest, The Hero, 3 Inches of Blood, Ninjaspy, West of Hell and Artillery.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted On February 23 and 24, the kindergarten classes went on field trips to Boston Pizza. While the students were there, they had a great time touring the restaurant, decorating chef hats, and making real pizzas. We would like to thank Miss Kelly for welcoming us on field trips to Boston Pizza for the last few years, and each time kindly providing a wonderful learning opportunity for our students to see what workers in our community do.

The kindergarten students and VES staff thoroughly enjoyed the delicious pizzas we were generously given by Miss Kelly.

VES participated in Purple Pinkie Day on February 24. Many students and staff donated $1 to Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign to help eradicate polio worldwide. In return, they received a

purple dyed pinkie to acknowledge their generosity. $532 was raised at VES on that day.

We also held our AR assembly that morning. Mrs Webb talked about our motto “Being the Best We Can Be”. The three Grade 3 classes put on a wonderfully informative presentation about the “Seven Habits of Healthy Children”.

Together this month, VES students read a total of 2800 points in AR, so Mr. Beecroft will maintain his beard for another month.

So far this year, the students have read a total of 13 500 points in AR. A sea of pink was present at VES on February 25 for Anti-Bullying Day. It was great to see so many students and staff supporting this cause. All the pinkshirted individuals, with four of our RCMP members, met in the gym to pose for a pink heart photo.

Se c ond ar y stud ents, along with Mrs Konieczny, Ms Almberg and Mr Tod enjoyed a day of skiing at Kinosoo Ridge Ski Resort in Cold Lake on the 25 of Februar y. Although it was an early morning and a chilly ride, Ms. Almberg drove them safely there on the white school bus. Most of the students had never been to Kinosoo Ridge before. Some of the students had never been to a hill period! After a quick lesson, they were on their way and doing great.

the opening game on Friday, February 20, 69 to 41. On Saturday they played Lloyd Comp JV Barons in the semifinal beating them 65 to 43. Saturday evening in the Championship game they defeated Holy Rosary JV Raiders 81 to 58 bringing home gold. The boys will be working hard preparing for zones, which will take place in two weeks. Congratulations to the Sr. Girls Basketball team as they won silver on Saturday, Februar y 21 in Westlock!

The girls played in Marwayne this past weekend and they are also preparing for zones in a couple of weeks.

This week is a short week as Teacher’s Convention is on Thursday and Friday, March 5 & 6. Also it is early dismissal on Wednesday, March 4.

It was a ver y busy week in the hallways of St. Jerome’s with a variety of activities happening throughout the week.

The school gymnasium and Gathering Area were packed with people as families came out to the Annual St. Jerome’s Car nival. The Grad e 10 Leadership Class did an amazing job of the “Superhero” themed event.

Carnival goers participated in a variety of games, Jr. and Sr. Hoop-la, Basketball toss, Hockey Shot, Cake Walk, Fish Pond, Face-painting and much more. There was also a Silent Auction and Tea Room/Bake Sale to check out. Thank you to all who attended and supported this year’s carnival. It was wonderful to see so many people out enjoying the evening.

On Tuesday students brought in a loonie and got their pinkie fingers painted purple in support of stopping polio throughout the world. This is a Rotary led initiative that St. Jerome’s has supported over the last couple of years.

If you walked down the hallway in the high school end of St. Jerome’s you would be sure you were seeing double on Tuesday as the middle level and high school students dressed as “Twins” for the day. It was amazing how close some of the pairings were.

The school was filled with a variet y of shades of pink as we took a stand against “Bullying” on Wednesday, Februar y 25. Members of the Vermilion RCMP detachment visited the school and passed out black pencils that change to pink, to all of

Also on Wednesday the elementary students gathered to celebrate February Happigrams. Mrs. Moore’s Grade one students provided the wonderful enter t ainm ent for t he c el e br ation. They sang the song, “If I Were a Butterfly” and acted out the book, “The Mitten”. Their voices were very clear and loud and their actions were amazing. Congratulations to all the February Happigram winners for their hard work, and dedication to their learning.

The elementary students have been sharing baskets of goodies around the community of Vermilion to thank organizations for making Vermilion the most fabulous town to live in and as

part of “ Random Acts of Kindness”.

A great night of family fun was had Thursday, February 26 at St. Jerome’s Annual Carnival. There was a huge turn out of parents and supporters despite the cold weather. Carnival goers enjoyed a wide range of events in the school gymnasium and gathering area. Some of the events included tossing rings at the hoop-la, basketball toss, hockey shot, fishing at the fish pond, cake walk and face painting. There was also a silent auction and tea house with bake sale. The Grade ten leadership class did an amazing job at the “Superhero” themed event. “Jerome’s Annual Carnival has been in existence now for the last 40 years, it has always been a fun filled night since I went to school here many years ago,” said one of the attendants on the night.

On February 23 Sarah (VanYken) Martin gave us a demo on Stock Dog Training. The members watched two different methods to work a Stockdog, one with the whistle and one just with voice commands.

Sarah showed us both as well as the other members of the Lakeland College Stockdog club showed us how to do it as well.

Sarah also demonstrated how important

leash work is. She brought in one of her three month old pups and showed us some of the leash work she does. So thank-you to Sarah Martin and the stock dog club. Our canine project members of the Vermilion Outdoors Club and the Vermilion Sheep Club have enjoyed all the workshops that we attended and we can’t wait until the next one which will take place in March.

To celebrate, the Vermilion Skating Club is bringing in some guest skaters. The Lloydminster Border Edges Beginner and Adult Synchronized Skating Teams will be attending. The Adult Team will be attending Adult Nationals in Calgary in April. The Club is also bringing in some guest skaters from Edmonton including Grayson Rosen from the Fliteway Skating Club will be attending. Rosen won Juniors at Sectionals this fall and placed thirteenth at Canadians.

Also attending is the Pre-Novice Dance team of Jasmine Lam and Mackenzie Mah from the Ice Palace Skating Club. They placed third at Sectionals this fall. Mackenzie Mah, also a single skater, is currently competing at the Canadian Winter Games in Prince George, BC. The club is very excited to have these guest skaters attending. Stars On Ice In Mannville The Mannville Skating club presented Stars On Ice at the organization’s annual carnival on February 27. The performance kicked-off with a parade of all the skaters followed by duets, solos and group skates by the members of the club. The evening also saw a guest performance by the Vermilion Sharp Edges skating group. Pictured here are the members of the Senior StarSkate group as they skated to the song All About The Bass.

The Junior StarSkate group skated to Let It Go, the theme song to the movie Frozen, during the Mannville Skating club’s annual carnival held on February 27.

The Amazing Race Vermilion Marie Conboy Reporter

The amazing race Vermilion will be taking place March 14 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

It is about working together with your team to solve clues and complete mental and physical challenges throughout the Town of Vermilion. The sites around the town will not be given away until the day of the event.

The Good Life Institute is encouraging people to participate and gather a team of four of their physical and smart friends and compete. There will be nothing dangerous

involved.

The grand prize will be $1000 in travel vouchers sponsored by Go Travel for the winning team. Lunches will be included at the event and at the end of the day there will be a steak supper at the Legion which is not included.

Teams are encouraged to bring their mobile phones.

Sponsors include Newcap Radio, The Legion, Lakeland Funeral Home, TD Bank, Ferbey Sand and Gravel and Vermilion Chrysler.

Vermilion Seniors Floor Curling Champs

Four senior ladies recently attended the Alberta Senior 55+ Games floor curling tournament held in Kinsella, Alberta, on January 28. After winning all four of their games, the team pictured here consisting of, from the left, Marj Osinchuk, Elsie Quickstad, Doreen McIntyre and Gert Isert, walked away with first place and brought back the memorial plaque to hang in the Vermilion Seniors Centre. Team member Gert Isert, said floor curling is a great way to stay fit and keep active through the winter season. St. Olga Church Passes On Easter Traditions

A number of people took advantage of the opportunity to learn how to decorate pysankys, Ukrainian decorated Easter eggs. The event, held at St. Olga’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on February 21, was open to all skill levels from the beginner to the very more experienced decorators who also served as teachers of the tradition.
