Big Success For Young Vermilion Robotic Builders

Robotics builders Rhys Racine and Kadin Morritt, both 12 years of age, made headlines this week when they spoke on CTV news at the Alberta Provincial VEX Competition in Edmonton. They finished fourth overall out of 35 teams, second in programming and third in driver skills. Not only that, but they also picked up the AMAZE award which honoured them for building a robot demonstrating overall quality. Photo Marie Conboy.

Vermilion Robotic Builders Win AMAZE Award Marie Conboy Reporter

The goal of the VEX championships is to encourage young people to think about automation and robotics, which can lead to future careers in engineering technologies. There were more than 200 students from 35 schools that participated on February 15 and 40 volunteers who helped run the event. The boys were younger than most of their competitors who were high school kids. They worked hard before the event programming their robot ‘Cookie’ for her 15 second autonomous round. Kadin Morritt, who is home schooled, said that the inspiration to first get into robots first came from his teacher over Skype, his teacher suggested VEX robotics because she felt he was too advanced for Lego robotics. The next step was to start a fundraising bake sale, “I had to sell cakes for two months to raise the money to buy

the beginner kit” said Kadin. The boys have worked incredibly well together as a team. Who knows what the future will hold for Rhys and Kadin with so much talent at such a young age but one thing is sure, it cer tainly looks bright. They also added that they were approached by a company after the competition in Edmonton, offering them summer jobs as soon as they turn sixteen. Kadin’s Mother, Kim Morritt said, “One minute, they sound like 30 year old engineers, and the next minute they are just like the 12 year old boys that they are having a snow ball fight”. Obituary George Clark

George Clark passed away Monday January 12, 2015 at the age of 78, at the Vermilion Health Care Center. A celebration of life was held on January 16th at the Mannville Recreation Center.

New Co-op Construction To Open Later In Spring

Gerald Hiebert, General Manager at Vermilion Eastalta Co-op, said this week that construction is running according to timeline schedule and the new premises is set to be opening later in the spring. Over fifty trucks were in town last week to put down the foundation floor. Hiebert said, “In addition to providing an improved shopping atmosphere, construction will incorporate many new building enhancements including a new bigger staff room and bigger in store area”. Doctor Shortage Concerns Lorna Hamilton Editor

Over the past week a controversial issue surrounding the doctor shortage in Vermilion has become widely known. As it stands now it has become public knowledge that we are losing one doctor for certain and the possibility of losing another and the reaction to such news has been nothing less than explosive to say the least. While I will not express my personal opinion as it may not represent the view of the Vermilion Voice, I do need to acknowl-

edge the issue as we are publishing a letter to the editor from a concerned citizen. I will be keeping a totally unbiased opinion and just pose a couple questions regarding the topic. In some responses to the letter which did circulate through email to various people and over a social media site before coming as a letter to the editor in our newspaper, I had the opportunity to read responses to it. The views expressed varied as they usually do and before any of the facts were known accusations were flying like wild fire in a wind storm. Fingers were being pointed toward the council members accusing them of putting dollars and cents ahead of the well being of its citizens.

My first question to pose is, is it fair to do so without all the facts? Shouldn’t an opinion be based on all the facts and not just on a one sided story? Now do not get me wrong, I am sure there are a lot of concerns and frustrations. We have all had issues with the difficulty we face when trying to get a loved one in to see a doctor and you’re informed you have to wait weeks before an appointment is available or you’re told the doctors are not accepting any new patients. Where does this leave new and existing patients that need to be seen quickly besides a trip to the emergency department. The problem here is a doctor shortage in our area and while we could sit here

and debate the issue until we take our last breath, I think it’s only right to look at the big picture, get all the facts and then make an informed opinion. The Vermilion Voice has always and will continue to accept letters to the editor regarding concerns the public may have but we do reserve the right to publish. We ask that any letter to the editor be done so in a respectful and professional manner and ask that the facts surrounding the concern be known before hand. The issue is we all want what’s best for our town and the people in it, whether we agree or disagree with the outcome. As more facts present themselves, the Vermilion Voice will report on such issue.

As previously reported in our paper, the windows and doors for the Habitat For Humanity project in Vermilion were in fact purchased, not donated, and the labour to install them was donated by Lakeland Home and Auto Glass.

Letter To The Editor Keep The Bird in Hand... Dear Editor, Did you know that there is a grave possibility that Vermilion and area could be losing Dr. Maulud? Financial concerns, rather than moral concerns, seem to be the basis for the town being unable to reach an amicable arrangement that would retain her for another three years and possibly beyond. The financial supplement that is being requested is for $2,000 a month to help differ a basic $9,400 a month cost to keep Dr. Maulud’s My Medical Clinic operating. We have difficulty in retaining doctors beyond three years and we are fortunate to have one that is prepared to stay committed to our community for longer. Unfortunately it seems narrow in vision and somewhat one sided, that a decision has been made to let her go without input from the citizens of our town and the surrounding region. This is a health issue that is touching many of us now, and will undoubtedly touch many of us in the near and distant future. The “Mayor’s Welcome”, found under the Town of Vermilion webpage, in part states that “Vermilion is firmly committed to economic development, with a high level of cooperation between the Town and the business community. Industrial, Commercial Tigers’ Coaching Clariﬁcation I write this letter to make sure people do not have a misconception on our coaching situation. Our coach was not relieved of his duties nor did our coach resign his position. His contract has expired. The executive has decided in a motion that when the coach’s contract has expired, the executive will re-advertise the position. The coach is welcome to reapply. Are you concerned? If so, council may yet reconsider their decision with your input. Financial consideration surrounding this complex issue has received due attention without a viable solution. However, the severe ramifications of patients set adrift after having the confidence that a doctor who is willing to remain in our community will no longer be here is difficult to comprehend. Surely a viable solution can be created that is based on compassion and moral obligation to the sick and infirm rather than on only dollars and cents. I cannot stress enough the compassionate nature of this issue that

must, in my opinion, receive our support as individuals and as community. An attempt had been made to inform the public through an email sent to council members, interested friends, and the Vermilion Rant and Rave page. This letter is written to provide further information to help in the decision of retaining Dr. Maulud as well as an invitation to our town and country citizens, to let council know that we wish to have this issue reopened with public input. In closing, a brief history of what led to the present situation follows. My Medical Clinic had requested of the town financial assistance to continue to operate and stay in the

community. Both sides could not agree to the amount so in light of the present political bidding war that occurs in this province, other communities who have offered more are delighted to have them. Are we willing to lose this doctor and start our search all over again for a doctor and their family who may or may not commit long-term to our community? If you are concerned and wish your view to be considered talk among yourselves and contact a member of town council or express your concern in a letter to the editor. Mic Jacejko

The faster frostbite tissue is thawed / rewarmed, the less tissue damage occurs, if possible a warm water bath of the area is best. Careful not to use hot methods and burn and above all, seek professional medical assistance as soon as possible. Of course the best cure for frostbite is preventive measures such as dressing properly, knowing the signs, using the buddy system as I did with the above story, and/or prevent yourself to such exposer to these dangerous conditions. It was cold and high winds the other day, exposed skin would freeze in seconds

February is passing by quite nicely. I don’t mind that at all and in fact this will be a very short month as February only has 28 days this year. So March will be upon us before we know it. This month hasn’t been all that bad considering we could be in a deep freeze right now and although it has been windy, the wind has brought record highs in parts of Alberta. Many parts of the province along the Rocky Mountains have been enjoying the warm windy Chinook winds known as the “snow eater winds,” a warming wind from the Pacific Ocean. When I lived near the western Rocky’s one could see a chinook coming by a huge weird cloud from horizon to horizon known as a “chinook arch”. It looked like it was being pushed by the clear sky. The chinook arch would always bring spectacular sunrises and sunsets with overwhelming colors, however unfortunately here in the Northern Midwest, we rarely get to enjoy the Chinooks. By the time the Chinook wind gets to us it’s just a cold wind but can still make temperature’s rise and fall like the Canadian dollar. Near the mountains I have seen 30-40 degrees difference in temperature in an hour. For us further north that temperature usually just fluctuates from cold to colder with high winds that sometimes even brings us the dreaded east winds as weather systems swirl in chaos. Regardless of what direction we get the winds, if it’s cold the wind will make it much colder and can be dangerous outdoors with the wind chill. Bare skin can freeze in seconds. Frostbite can become a serious factor for anyone not dressed properly, and it can happen quickly. I know people that have lost fingers toes and even parts of their ears and nose. I was hunting with a buddy one winter and we were in a vehicle driving to our hunting area. As we neared the area several deer crossed the trail and my buddy jumped out of the vehicle to have a look. Since we were in a warm vehicle with the heater blasting we were not yet dressed for the cold weather and to make matters worse, the wind picked up. My buddy wasn’t out there for two minutes and as I glanced at him, his nose was as white as the driven snow, so I yelled at him to get into the truck immediately. When he got back into the truck he was confused at why I was so concerned, so I calmly stated DO NOT touch your nose just look in the mirror. He was shocked as he had never had frostbite before. Although he is one of the hardiest outdoorsmen I know, natural conditions worked against him. Without a winter parka and getting instantly exposed from a hot vehicle to a freezing wind chill, his body went into protective mode. The body has a natural reaction to preserve vital life by protecting the body core so blood vessels closest to the skin constrict and blood flow to your body’s extremities is restricted. Your extremities which are arms, legs and unfortunately even though your brain is part of this protective reaction the head is an extremity, body parts furthest from the body core are most at risk. These would

be fingers and toes and parts of the bare face exposed to the wind and cold, the nose and ears are usually first to experience frostbite as in the case with my hunting buddy. The skin doesn’t have to be exposed to experience bad frostbite, wet feet are a huge danger to frostbite, regardless of how many pairs of socks and how good your boots are, even wet from feet perspiration is a risk. I think the one thing t h at r e a l l y s p o o ks the most of us, “the unknown.” Way back in my early school days, it came about that the powers that be, decided that schoolchildren needed, a vitamin supplement to make up for winter diets that lacked fresh veggies and such. Remember this is middle forties and there weren’t any stores loaded with produce like there are now. Anyway, they came out with a vitamin pill that was nothing but totally noxious looking as far as we kids could figure, anyway. We did everything we could to keep from actually swallowing one of the horrid things. Soon you could find them squished on the floor as they were spit out and wasted. The insides resembled a squashed caterpillar! There was a real program put forth to try and convince us of their goodness, but it was a dismal failure, the fear of the unknown really won the day. Any venture that has a risk as to the outcome, comes with the fear of the unknown circumstances that could make or break the deal. I really feel for our present farmers who have to risk tremendous amounts of cash, to say nothing of the work that goes with it. The stress can really take a toll! The fear of the unknown you could reckon back to the days of our pioneers, who came to this strange country, with so many unknown to them conditions and try to make a living. Talk about the fear of the unknown, it must have been quite an adventure. You’d think the people who ventured out in boats to cross a vast ocean to come to these shores, many with families looking for solace when there was so little to be had. The fear of the unknown had to be very real though.

Even now where we do know what the weather can do we have up to the minute forecasts of the weather conditions, the fear of what’s next can cause a good deal of concern. We all have a fear of the unknown when we go out on a drive as there can be so many things that can come out of nowhere and bring us grief. It’s always in the back of my mind that some cold dark time, something could go wrong and I’d be stranded. The fear of the unknown, I guess helps keep us sharp! I remember as a kid being so afraid of the dark, outside and my Uncle Herman, bless his heart, kept telling me about the goblins and spirits that attacked out of the dark and ate kids like me. That fear out of all proportion ruled me for years until I found that the dark gave me a place to hide away from the world and loose myself. A handy thing when you’re feeling a bit down. You need to find a way to make what’s unknown, familiar, so it can hold no surprises. So then as we age and again there looms ahead of us this huge black hole of the unknown, uncertainty, maybe we should rely on some of the teachings available to us and listen more intently when we hear the words of the folks who would comfort us when we’re saying goodbye to friends and loved ones. Surely there must be some basis of truth as so many things around us speaks of a creator and the certainty of a hereafter if we can believe and come to that faith. Hopefully the unknown can become so

much less fearful and we can rest secure in the idea that our loved ones will be with us in eternity. I think it’s a way lot better thinking that then having to face that fear of the unknown. I’m so really thankful for the home I was raised in and had the blessing of loving parents who taught me those values as I was growing up. In the context of an in c reasing ly visible profile as a participant in costly international conflicts and exporter of arms (the latter being news to this naive Canadian), and a diminishing role as peacekeeper and humanitarian aid provider, we might pause to consider the implications of Canada’s emergent new status in the international spotlight. Are we more a nation of reasoned diplomacy, of peacemakers, or a nation of front-line warriors? Which image do the majority of us think best depicts What is a Canadian? I suppose it depends who’s involved in the discussion. There are currently 35 Ministers sitting in our Parliamentary Cabinet (36 if you include our Prime Minister), 7 are responsible for two or more portfolios or government ministries, and 12 operate under the banner of Ministry of State which means they have no specific duties or portfolio but may be assigned by the Governor in Council to assist any Minister within the Cabinet. We’re familiar with most of the portfolios for which an appointed Minister is responsible: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, to name a few. There are so many aspects that a nation, its people, and its elected g over nm ent re present at ives mu st address. The Ministries represent the array of subjects that require competent management to ensure the stability of a nation economically, socially, culturally, not only nationally, but internationally as well. They must be managed in accordance with the mandate established by

a nation’s elected representatives----its Parliament----, to uphold its values as defined by its citizens over time. Our laws reflect the guidelines or parameters within which we, as citizens, collectively agree to conduct ourselves. It is we who define our society. It is we who decide who will govern us, who best can adhere to principles longstanding, who we trust to alter our course when necessary to ensure our continued stability and honour and safety. You could assert that the structure and defining responsibilities of the various Ministries, when considered as a whole, represent our nation’s most valued priorities. Should it strike us as strange then, that in a stable, multi-cultural, liberal, d emo crati c nation su c h as is O ur Canada, there has never existed a Ministry of Peace? Isn’t being a peaceful nation, at least until recently, a significant aspect of our national identity? If so, who among our government representatives is responsible for advocating Peace, within and without our borders? People pray for World Peace. There are international conferences held to discuss World Peace. Artists perform in support of World Peace. There are cries from people in every nation across the world, all calling in unison for World Peace. It seems that Peace is an important topic universally. We have a Minister of Finance. We have a Minister of Health. We have a Minister of Foreign Affairs. We have a Minister of Justice. We have a Minister of Defence. We have a Minister, it seems, to guide and administer on our behalf every significant principle and practical concern affecting our daily lives. Yet there exists no Minister of Peace. Is it because we take it for granted, that we don’t consider it even remotely possible

in a world where perpetual war, while undesirable, has become a familiar norm to which we are all resigned? Or has the concept of Peace simply been relegated by most of us to dark spaces at the bottom of our treasure chest of utopic impossibilities, some leftover foolishness from the seventies, as untenable as a magic carpet ride? When it becomes a priority, when advocating for Peace becomes as serious a commitment for this nation and others as sealing the next Free Trade Agreement or Weapons Deal or promising new Employment Creation Plan, we may witness the creation of a Ministry of Peace, with its inaugural appointee occupying a most coveted position. What could be considered more relevant, more honourable?

Butter tart squares are a popular square from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. I have been in search for a good recipe that is authentic to the ones from that era for quite a while. These types of squares were often found at bridal showers, funeral lunches and community pot luck suppers back then. Those community ladies sure were good cooks. Butter tart squares give you all the deliciousness of a butter tart without all the work of rolling out pastry for tart shells. The butter nut squares are a variation that uses nuts such as walnuts

and pecans. You can also add some sliced almonds. The base is a type of shor tbread while the filling has a buttery caramel flavor. Both of these squares are quick and easy to make and are a nice desert with tea or coffee. They are perfect to take anywhere, when you need to bring a pan of squares. They can be frozen in an air tight container and are handy to just pull out of the freezer when unexpected company drops by. Fair warning, if you serve your unexpected guests these yummy treats with coffee, you can expect they will be showing up a lot more often. Base

Butter Nut Squares

1 cup flour 1/2 cup softened butter 1/4 cup sugar Topping 2 eggs 1 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons melted butter 2 Tablespoons flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup nuts such as walnuts and/or pecans Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Blend the 1 cup of flour with the 1/2 cup butter and mix in the 1/4 cup sugar. Press this mixture into the bottom of a 8 x 8 square pan. To make the filling cream the eggs and the brown sugar together. Stir in the melted butter. In a small bowl

or cup mix the baking powder and the flour together and then mix this mixture into the filling. Stir in the vanilla and the nuts. Spread the filling over the base and bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Butter Tart Squares Use the same base as for the butternut squares. Topping 2 eggs 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup raisins Follow the same re c ipe metho d as above, except use 1 cup of raisins instead of the 1 cup of nuts.

Knights of Columbus Serves Breakfast Ten volunteers from the Knights of Columbus, along with six volunteers from the Vermilion and Area Crisis Line were busy preparing breakfast and cleaning tables respectively at the Father Cordeau Centre at St. Jerome’s School on February 22. Half the proceeds from the breakfast will be donated to the Vermilion and Area Crisis Line with the other half being used by the Knights of Columbus for the expenses incurred in preparing the meal. The Knight of Columbus serves breakfast monthly on the third Sunday from September until April excluding December with the proceeds going to a different charity of choice each time. Tractor Trailer Accident Slows Highway 16 Traffic On February 20 at approximately 6:20 a.m. emergency services were called to responded to a tractor trailer unit that lost control and was blocking Highway 16 at range road 94. No injuries were reported. RCMP as well as three units with the Mannville Fire department were dispatched. The Innisfree department was also requested to assist. The west bound lane was closed until mid-day while the east bound lane was converted to two lanes to help divert traffic. Icy road conditions are suspected to be the cause of the accident but not confirmed at this time. Photo submitted.

Fun Filled Family Triathlon At The Park Marie Conboy Reporter

Numerous Vermilion families turned out to enjoy a sunny afternoon of fun and friendly competition at the Vermilion Provincial Park on Family Day, February 16. The Vermilion Wellness Coalition hosted the triathlon which encouraged families to participate in the fun activities including tobogganing, snowshoeing, snow Frisbee and snow-painting.

Everyone made their own bannock, which was cooked on sticks over the campfire and also enjoyed hot beverages. The Vermilion Wellness Coalition is a partnership between Alberta Health Services, Vermilion Is Being Empowered (VIBE), the Vermilion Provincial Park and the Town of Vermilion. The goal of the coalition is to keep children active and to help them make good nutritional choices. Overall it was a great event and fun way for families to do something together on the Family Day Holiday.

Bullying In The Workplace Shawna Craig, VIBE Coach Submitted

When most people think of bullying, they instantly think of their children or reflect back to when they were young in school, on the playground or on the bus. We don’t normally think of it as something that happens to us once we get older. Unfortunately bullying occurs at all ages, and in all locations, even the workplace. As adults, our perception of what bullying entails makes it hard to know if it is happening to us or around us. Bullying in the workplace is a serious issue and does occur more often than we think whether it involves co-workers or management. Bullying can take many forms. It can be difficult recognize because it is not always obvious. Spreading rumors or gossip are more subtle forms that can be hard to trace. Intimidating, excluding from a project or setting an individual up for failure with unrealistic assignment / project goals are all indirect forms of workplace bullying. We tend to react quicker to the more obvious methods like tampering with or stealing someone’s belongings or work equipment, offensive jokes, yelling or physical abuse. Recognizing the signs of bullying is

the first step in maintaining a healthy an d pr o d u c t i ve wor k e nv ir o n m e nt because the toll it takes on your physical and mental health can be long-term. The stress of being bullied affects our bodies even when we think it’s not. Individuals dealing with bullying at work also tend to think it happened at work it stays at work. This is not the case. The consequences of being bullied can be headaches/migraines, exhaustion, loss of appetite, irritability, depression, family tension, avoidance, poor concentration, anxiety or panic attacks and could ultimately lead to getting fired or quitting. An individual being bullied may have experienced other symptoms as stressful situations affect everyone differently. There are many strategies to tackle workplace bullies and finding an appropriate plan of attack can be a sensitive issue as you have to find a way that is safe and comfortable for yourself. Some companies have policies which would address the issue therefore approaching a manager and reporting the harassment would be one step. Keeping files, notes, evidence or providing witnesses is another. Fighting fire with fire isn’t a realistic solution to solving the problem and could make the situation worse. Your well-being is important and it’s ok to put yourself first. An unhealthy work-

place can have severe effects on those being bullied. Bullying in the workplace is real and should be acknowledged as a serious issue. Pink Shirt Day is Feb 25 this year. It is a day that symbolizes the importance of working together to stand up against bullies because no one should be made to feel like they are less, at school, work or anywhere. Change does not happening by ignoring it. The Mental Health Capacity Building in Schools Initiative (MHCB) is an integrated, multidisciplinary team approach providing promotion, prevention and early intervention addiction, health and mental health services to children, families and communities. The VIBE Program is one of the 37 projects involved in this initiative led by Alberta Health Services Addiction and Mental

Mannville Pre-school Comedy Night

Comedian Jasen Fredrickson from The Yuk Yuks performed at the Mannville Pre-school comedy night on Saturday 21 to a packed hall. Fredrickson had the hall in stitches laughing during his performance. There was a huge turn out and all of the food for the night was donated and cooked by volunteers. The night was a great success with the funds raised going to the Mannville pre-school. Jasen Fredrickson, pictured left, was named Calgary’s funniest new comedian in 2002, since then he has toured extensively across Canada. Photos Marie Conboy.

Retired Lt Colonel Mike Austdal Visits Cadets Armoury Marie Conboy Reporter

An exciting night was held for the young Cadets in Vermilion on Tuesday, February 17, when retired Lt. Col. Austdal visited the Armoury. He first inspected a parade and afterwards gave a presentation to the cadets on laser detector vests worn by the Canadian Armed Forces. Lt. Col. Austdal said

the Canadian Forces use the vests in training at Wainwright to prepare for overseas deployment. Laser receivers on the vest detect when a soldier has been illuminated by a firearm’s laser. Lt. Col. Austdal told Cadets how the vests make training as realistic as possible to best prepare soldiers for real situations. Army Cadets is a youth organization designed to promote leadership, citizenship and physical fitness.

What does the number 100, $2,500 and volleyball have in common? They are among the various things that were celebrated at Dewberry School over these last few weeks. February 11, signified the hundredth day of school and with that came a celebration of any thing 1 0 0 in the G r a d e 1/ 2 c l a s s r o o m . T h ey c e l e brated their 101st day the following day as Februar y 11 was the scheduled ski trip! Teacher Darci MacMillan arrived to school early to deck out the entrance way and her classroom for the festivities. What came off the bus and through the doors was a sight to behold! Several 100 year old little people replaced the students that usually sit in the desks. It was a fun filled day and they had many opportunities to count to and design things all specific to 100, even principal, Curt Orbek was fashionably dressed in a shirt that sported 100 panthers! Last week the school received a g r a nt for $ 2, 5 0 0 fr o m t h e C o u nt y of Vermilion River to help with our Healthy School Initiative! Some of the funds have already been spoken for and they will go towards water coolers, bullying book sets and an industrial conveyor toaster (to speed up the morning breakfast club process). The remainder of the money will be spent on other things to assist with daily physical education, break fast club, fresh water and healthy relationships! We are very fortunate to receive this money and know that it will go towards improving our school, students and the relationships between everyone within these walls! Rustlers U16 Volleyball is in full swing but you’re probably wondering what that has to do with Dewberry School! Our own Kyra Weidmark tried out for the team and made it! They played their first tournament in Saskatoon and snagged a gold in tier three, for the Subway Saskatchewan Cup! Superb job, Kyra (& the Rustlers)! Ever y where we look, something, somehow can be celebrated. Some days we may need to look a bit harder but the things to celebrate are there, we just need to look ahead! In the famous words of C.S. Lewis, there are far, far better things ahead than any we l eave b e hin d. We fore se e many more celebrations in Dewberry School’s future!

Lakeland Senior Games Association Floor Curling Challenge at Kinsella. Four ladies, Marg Osinchuk, Doreen McIntyre, Elsie Quickstad and Gert Isert attended and won all four games. They came home with first place ribbons and will have their names on the Provincial Plaque. Very Nice! The Seniors’ Centre floors were scheduled for resurfacing on February 5 and 6. Besides having the floors spruced up, it was decided it was more than time to shampoo the chairs prior to the floors being done. On January 23, 14 members volunteered their time to accomplish this task. At noon, a meal was served to those in attendance, then back to work! Thank you to all those who assisted in this task. One thing leads to another, so on the February 5 and 6, around ten floor curlers sanded, polished and repaired the curling rocks. Once again, lunch was provided to the hard workers. Many volunteer hours

I found out way too many facts to write about in a short space so will share just a little information. She has been instrumental in the success of floor curling at the Seniors. This month potluck is being held the third Wednesday instead of the second Wednesday as in the past. Presently the second week in each month tends to be a little hectic so by moving potluck to the third week allows both attendees and volunteers a little break between these events. In March it will be the second week again because of an earlier booking. People are asking if the Fish Dinner will take place in April and the plan is to have it

Good Friday again. No potluck in April. Crib Doubles took place on February 12. Some regulars were unable to attend due to other circumstances but the event was still a success. Lunch was a bit of an experiment but seemed to be enjoyed by those attending. Fresh buns were on the menu, barbequed spareribs, rice, brussel sprouts, corn, marinated carrots, Thai salad and bread pudding complete with a tasty sauce. Thank you to Gert for assuming responsibility for the event and to Dorothy Zayac and Ruby Samuelson for spending all that time in the kitchen. Prizes were given as follows: first - Sheila Duncan and Rhoda Desjardins, second - Cecil McCrae and Roger Erickson, third - Ed and Lil Radish. The 50/25/25 was won by Ed Radish and Carol Row. The General Annual Meeting is being held on March 19 at 1p.m. All seniors are invited to attend.

They handed out about 3 50 c ook ies and tea and did ni c e deeds like opening doors and carrying groceries. What a nice undertaking, Grade 6.

In the spirit of the French Carnival, the Grade 6 students created ice sculptures for the rest of the school to view. They also participated in a ‘Cabane a Sucre’ where they poured hot maple syrup on snow, and then gathered the cooled syrup using popsicle sticks, creating delicious lolly pops. Our Celebration of Learning will be on March 11 and our Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on March 12. Ashly McKinnon and Kelsey Pillman are students from the U of A, and Taylor Braun is studying at Keyano College. Ashly and Kelsey will be at VES for three different days from now until mid-March and then they will complete their practicum from March 16 to April 24 while Taylor is here from February 18 - April 27. Our annual Junior/Senior High ski trip is planned for Wednesday, February 25. This year we are going to Kinosoo Ridge in Cold Lake. The hill has recently opened a new terrain park that is supposed to be very good. This is a great way to try the sport at a safe hill that still provides entertainment for more experienced skiers/snowboarders. We encourage as many students as we can to try this fun and healthy winter activity. Our basketball team of Tyson Default, Morgan Watling, Max Amero, Zach Leronovich, Ethan Tobin-Gillis, Shawn Heward, Glenn Storch and Diego Tinoco represented our school in the BTJHAA Highway16 Basketball Tournament at E.H. Walter on the weekend. On April 2 our Grades10-12 students have the opportunity to see Tom Stoppard’s play Arcadia performed live at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. Mannville School will be contributing to the transportation costs, allowing us to offer this field trip for $35 per student. There is a maximum amount of tickets available and will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. We need final numbers for the Citadel by March 4. If you have any questions about the trip, or would like to volunteer as a parent chaperone, please contact Mr. Maron at the school. We want to thank this service group for their continued support of our school awards. The Grade 6 class will be finishing off the Babysitter’s Course. Kelly Bannister 780 724-3444 kbannister@tpi.ca The immediate Past Grand Exalted Ruler of the Elks of Canada was in Mannville recently to present the Royal Purple Elks chapter with its’ Charter, declaring the chapter a separate, yet equal partner to the Elks branch in Mannville. The move was made due to the Royal Purple of Canada deciding in the spring that it wanted to become a separate organization no longer affiliated with the Elks of Canada. For 100 years, the Royal Purple had been an auxiliary to the branches of the Elks of Canada. Earlier this spring, the Royal Purple of Canada gave Royal Purple members the choice to either join them as a society or continue their affiliation with the Elks. The above Mannville ladies decided to join the Elks as a separate, yet equal group no longer an auxiliary of the main branch. The group will now be known as the Mannville Royal Purple Elks lodge #205. Some Royal Purple members decided not to align themselves with the Elks and formed a new Royal Purple Society that is not affiliated with the Elks. Despite the change, HRL Myhovich said the activities and basic make up of our group will remain the same and we will continue fundraising for various causes in Mannville as in the past. A Message From The Mannville Fire Chief

Our department is encouraging drivers to slow down when passing emergency vehicles when on scene and on route to emergency calls. We are routinely seeing more and more speeders through our emergency scenes, totally disregarding traffic warning devices and emergency vehicle warning systems. It’s getting more dangerous and it’s a very real concern for our safety as we respond to help others. We have had many very real close calls lately and would like to express our concern.
