Bull Riding And Fighting School Attracts Cowboys From Far And Wide

There was a great atmosphere at the Bull Riding and Fighting school this past weekend February 13 - 15 at the Lakeland College Equine Centre.

Participants came from far and wide to attend the Johansen Brothers and Scot t Schif fner Bull Riding School and the Scott Byrne and Monty Phillips Bullfighting School presented by Lakeland College’s Rodeo Club. 32 bull rider par ticipants and four bull fighters ranging from beginning to advanced came to touch on their skills with the 40 bulls bucked on the Friday.

Each rider strides to stay on for eight seconds. Gordon Freeman, one of the bull riding participants at the event, said “I’ve always been a cowboy, I’ve rode bulls for the past two years and I want to improve. It’s a huge adrenaline rush and it’s really addictive. You can’t sell it short though, there are real dangers. I broke my foot on rodeo last year up north.”

Devon Fox who came from Manitoba to the school said “I can’t compare anything else to the thrill I get from bull riding.”

that is crazy. To me crazy is doing something with your life that you hate every day, I love what I do.”

Bull fighting school instructor Scott Byrne said, “It ’s all about trust and team work”. 90 per cent of dangerous sports deal with a motorized vehicle but that vehicle doesn’t want to turn around and run you over or hurt you.

You’re dealing with an animal that has been breed and has a blood line to buck or hurt you, you’re dealing with an animal that can change their mind at any time.” Bull fighters have to read the play at all times, if they don’t that is when cowboys can get hurt. “Our job is to make sure everyone leaves unhur t and healthy. But riders also know that when they put their hand in that rope there is a risk and they can get hurt.”

Innisfree Delights Wild Taste Buds Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The twenty-eighth annual Innisfree Fish & Game Supper and Dance filled the Rec Center on February 14 in the organization’s main fundraiser for the year. The

supper featured many wild game dishes for visitors to try, as well as domestic meats, all prepared by friends and volunteers of the organization and lead by head cooks Louise Bohaichuk and Maryann Jackson.

Both ladies had been preparing for days before the much anticipated supper and it

did not disappoint. Moose cutlets, deer meatballs, elk in mushroom gravy and numerous fish dishes were all on the menu.

Following the supper was the live auction hosted by local auctioneers who each year, volunteer their services to help with the cause. This year’s auction raised more than $14,000 which the organizers say goes right back into to the community.

The Innisfree Fish & Game donates to many local organizations in the area and also helps send youth to outdoor camps each summer.

RCMP Reports

theft from motor Vehicles in the Vermilion area In the early morning hours of Friday February 6, 2015, the Vermilion RCMP received a call about a suspicious male attempting to enter parked cars and garages near Stewart Crescent in Vermilion. Members responded immediately and, despite blizzard-like conditions, were able to track and locate a suspect on foot in the area. A male dressed in all dark clothing was observed by officers to enter a parked vehicle on 50th Avenue

before fleeing South-West. After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was arrested by the RCMP on 49 Avenue at 51st Street.

The suspect was found to be in possession of numerous items including cash and small electronics that are believed to have been stolen from vehicles and residences along the route of his crime spree. The ensuing RCMP investigation determined that the suspect attempted to gain access to more than seventy vehicles and several residences, however he was not successful in all attempts. Bodhi Bouchard, age 22 currently a resident of Vermilion has been charged with multiple counts of break and enter, theft under $5000.00 and mischief. The investigation is ongoing. Bouchard appears next in Vermilion Court on March 2nd, 2015.

Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is asked to contact Crimestoppers or Vermilion RCMP.

The Vermilion Quilters Guild: “Here A Square, There A Square!’’

It seems ridiculous that the task is to choose lovely fabric, pay a good and fair price for it, then go home and cut it up into squares. Often bisect these squares to create triangles and then cut strips and smaller strips out of the material that is left. But this ridiculousness turns to the sublime if you are a quilter, which means you have been gifted with an artsy creativity. You can envision things that don’t exist, you have patience for the tedious and been blessed with fine motor finesse.

Vermilion Quilters’ Guild is one of the gems in our community and enables artisans to learn together, share ideas, and pursue individual strengths. These endeavors produce exquisite and inspiring results that are on display the first weekend in May at the Vermilion Quilters’ Annual Quilt Show.

This past year the guild donated comfort quilts to the Stollery Children’s Hospital and completed community

quilts that have been donated or raffled off to support local non-profit community groups. ‘Quilt Til You Wilt’ days are held on various weekends with doors open at 9 a.m. An additional fee is required for these marathons.

Vermilion’s Quilters Guild is a nonprofit group with over 40 members with meetings held at the School of Hope the second and forth Wednesdays of the month from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Supper is served at 6 p.m. followed by a time of sharing and Sew & Tell where members display newly completed projects. Quilters of all skill levels are welcome.

Member interests vary from traditional quilts to art quilts, from piecing to appliqué, from hand quilting to fancy machine embroidery. Members are free to participate in as much or as little as they choose.

Bullying: A Societies Problem Lorna Hamilton Editor

B u l l y i n g surrounds us each and every day and a f f e c t s t h e l i ve s of so many children, teens and even adults.

Bullying does not only just happen in schools and playgrounds like it used to years ago, it happens now through cyber space and in our workplace.

Bullying by definition refers to repeated and targeted aggression to have a cumulative effect to either, threaten, undermine, constrain, humiliate or harm another person, their property, reputation, self- esteem or self confidence.

To fully understand how bullying affects the people around us we must understand the forms in which bullying may come in. When we think of bullying we often think of it as being just verbal, such as being called a degrad-

ing name or physical, such as being pushed or banged into as we pass by the bully. H owever bullying can come in the form of social, racial, religious, sexual and also against people with disabilities.

So how do we as a society distinguish between normal behaviour and bullying? Well actually there is a fine line that separates the t wo. Ever y person may have a disagreement with another person, they may verbally or physically attack someone in a time of anger or disappointment, friends often tease each other and this is ok if it is done in fun and both sides are laughing and having fun with the teasing.

The flip side to these normal behaviours is when it becomes repetitive and constant, then it jumps the fence from being normal behaviour into bullying.

Bullying has taken on so many different faces that it is becoming increasingly harder and harder to distinguish.

As a society we think we could spot bullying from a mile away but c an we really? How are we supposed to

recognize a situation which involves bullying if we do not know the true circumstances around each case?

The questions could be endless.

Workplace and cyber bullying has be c ome more prominent than any one of us would even think . H ave you ever seen a posting on facebook where a status is geared toward a certain person and you think to yourself “wow that’s a bit harsh.” Have you ever seen a co-worker get scolded in front of many people and think “gee, I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes right at that moment.” We all speak out of place sometimes and do things that we later regret. That is normal, but when a co-worker is constantly being scolded or nitpicked at or you see many negative postings regarding the same person, it’s time to start to question whether or not this person is on the receiving end of a bully.

We often feel as a society that bullying is an individual’s own problem and they must take the stance to stop the bullying by themselves or at least

repor t it to seek out help but, often the victim does not have the will left to fight as bullying is about power and often they feel powerless or do not have the knowledge and suppor t to make it stop.

We need to step back and look at how the victim must feel. If you speak to children and even adults who have been bullied and ask them why they have stayed silent about the situation, many of them will tell you the fear of standing up and speaking out is overwhelming. They feel as though the consequences outweigh the benefits, they feel as though the bullying will become worse if they snitch on the bully. They feel ashamed, they feel as though no one will believe them, they sometimes feel as though they deserve what is happening to them.

The consequences of bullying has become so serious it has taken the lives of our young people. It is time that we as a society realizes that bullying is a huge problem and it isn’t a individuals problem but societies problem.

Letter To The Editor Balancing data collection and privacy rights Dear Editor, Our Conser vative Government conducted the 2011 Census using a short-form questionnaire and a new voluntary National Household Survey (NHS). In doing so, our Government met the necessary balance between collecting statistical data and protect-

ing the privacy rights of Canadians, while also respecting taxpayer dollars.

I have a lot of respect for Liberal Member of Parliament Ted Hsu, but he was wrong on this issue because his proposed reforms to the Statistics Act would have reversed the steps our Government has taken to meet this balance. Indeed, these reforms

Thru the darkness of winter the days of sunshine and actual daylight are getting that much longer. It may seem minuscule on the wall clock, but it is very noticeable in my eyes and sanity.

Cabin fever hasn’t set in with me this year although days have been short and it has been dark. Even during the day it seems cloudy and dismal this winter, so I must be busy or enjoying outdoor adventures.

February can be a strange month, it can be winter hard or a slight glimpse into spring just around the corner, and so how much daylight do we actually gain a day, about a whopping two minutes and 30 seconds.

Now many may think “big deal” but it is if you think about it. You get to see that sun an extra five minutes today since yesterday and that adds up quickly, and pun intended, not a minute too late for me.

I am just recovering from the dreaded “common cold” this past weekend so my outdoor adventures were short to say the least. Since my bout with taking a chemo therapy a few years back, my immune system has been weak to say the least.

This may stem from a lot of different factors but one I believe is my intake of vitamin D. Vitamin D is very important for good overall health and strong and healthy bones. But it’s a most important factor in making sure your muscles, heart, lungs and brain work well and that your body can fight infection and make your immune system fight off nasty stuff like the common cold.

Where and how do we get the vitamin D we need? One can get a very small amount in certain foods such as fatty fish, egg yolks, some fruit, vegetables and cereal, but it’s nearly impossible to get what we need from the foods we eat.

So what is our biggest source of vitamin D? Well believe it or not, it’s that extra two and a half minutes of glorious sunlight we are now getting. That’s right sunlight, without getting into a medical journal to explain…

Your body is designed to get the vitamin D it needs by producing it when your bare skin is exposed to sunlight. Did you know here in the mid-west of Canada we can’t produce vitamin D from October through April? These times can be even longer, up to a month or two, if you’re skin type is darker or of course, if you don’t get outdoors. Then your options are like in the old days, a big spoon of the dreaded Cod liver oil.

Cod liver oil was used to prevent “Rickets” a nasty deterioration of the body due to deficiency of vitamin D. Thankfully we have much better vitamin supplements

Around The Campfire available to us today. I personally take a vitamin supplement and a huge dose of outdoor adventures to keep up my vitamin D intake. Even then one can’t do that with the food we eat and sometimes my immune system show a deficiency.

Consult your medical doctor, physician or pharmacist before undertaking a supplement program and please don’t be running around naked in the outdoors.

Remember too much sun can be as dangerous. Ideally the most exposed skin at short intervals is the ultimate. If you get sun burned, well you will know you’re getting too much sun light as that is dangerous and not a whole lot of fun either.

Having a bout with skin cancer on my face where I don’t ever recall getting sunburn, is emphasis to me there is a happy medium so I use caution and I personally equalize that with supplements.

This time of the year it’s possible to get near sunburn when on the ice or in snow due to all the reflection light on a sunny day. Still use caution and remember always be aware of snow blindness and its effects.

Sunglasses are a must on ice and snow during these sunny winter days,

even on mostly cloudy skies it a good idea. The above is another lesson that all good things are best in moderation.

Regardless get outdoors, even if it’s just for a short walk.

My Dad used to comment on his observations of things in general and he was, to a fairly good degree, quite accurate. He’d say “you know if you’d be about opposite of the majority, you’d be closer to being right.”

He’d chuckle then and let you think about that for a while.

You were always left to make up your own mind and draw your own conclusions.

Like you probably observed when you wean the calves come fall, and the timid young mothers were chased away from the choice feed. If you were a caring person you separated those young mothers into a separate pen and made sure they got a chance at good feed.

Remember hearing about the rationing of vital things in the war years so everyone had a chance to have a share.

Seems people with means would buy up all they could and sell it at tremendous profit, not a good thing to think about.

There had to be a separation from the

greedy to allow the common to survive.

In early times the banks were loath to loan money to farmers especially because of the uncertainty of the weather and chancy markets. You had to learn to save whatever money you might acquire if you wanted to buy other then basic needs.

My Uncle Fred claimed he never paid more than $600 for a quarter of land.

No one had any money it seemed until it became easier to borrow money. Seems it was realized that in order for the big business to sell things, money had to be made available.

The war put an end to the great depression and unemployment was eased. People with steady jobs could make payments so the buy now pay later fad started. The herd was starting to buy on time like the old cowboy remarked, “ You fed next year’s crop before you planted it.” Suddenly there was more market for everything that could be manufactured in the old war time.

Remember trying to buy a vehicle, tractor, or whatever. The prices went into orbit.

People could borrow money and buy things that were denied them for years. There certainly weren’t too many lots full of vehi-

cles and machinery as I remember like there are now.

During my teen years in the early fifties I think the best times ever were known. There were good prices for our products and our costs were low, and money could be had for almost anything for the asking, pretty awesome for a while. Then came the cost price squeeze as they dubbed it. It certainly thinned the herd and farms grew larger and neighbors even farther and farther apart.

The little towns started to dry up and the prices of our essentials were about out of reach. It took bigger and bigger investments to earn smaller return. The reliance on credit became more and more critical! I wonder if the whole structure is beginning

to topple as folks are getting tired of spending and risking thousands to earn anything, maybe even just breaking even.

The herd has left the land and the stragglers are all that are left, I wonder?! Seems that there is a new age of people though who want to raise their own food and have an end to chemical use and force raised meat and little farms that are organic and natural are becoming popular. A separation of the herd again you think?

I so remember the simpler easier times of my youth when we actually raised most of our own food, got along with little money and had the best of things in what could have been hard times but for that fact, something to think about in the times ahead!

If this were Fiction World and I appointed the Director of What Counts as News Media, the network employing me could expect quickly to spiral into bankruptcy, but at least there would be a chance of sinking happily. My mandate in this temporary most-bad-news-suspended world would include relentlessly seeking out and reporting on encouraging, inspiring news, the stuff that leaves receivers of it with a feeling of being staggeringly proud to be a member of the great undulating mass that is humankind.

This flash of the temporar y, sure to falter due to its unapologetic slant toward overly positive content, would be named The Utopian Network---yes, The UN----something cynics could target as idealistic and definitely scoff-able. Its content would prove most unpopular with viewers who have come to expect and therefore now crave more and more exposure to events featuring shockingly depressive violence, tragedy, and injustice augmented with a few forgettable scandals involving famous people popular for reasons hardly anyone can explain. It might serve well, though, a small niche whose members comprehend the damage our collective psyche suffers from continually deflecting the barrage of broadcasting content seemingly ladled from a roiling cauldron of rancid soup comprised of abject misery, the unconscionably sinister, and the effusively stupid.

How did we get here? How do the managing directors of our various providers of news determine that we the public yearn to hear intimate details of the worst of deeds undertaken by the quarter-witted underbelly of humanity and we yearn to hear it repeated endlessly hour after hour, day after day?

It must be what we demand. It must also be what ensures the most viewers and earns the highest profit. It must be or else those who decide what is newsworthy and what is not would deliver something quite different, wouldn’t they? The news exists for us, keeping us informed, its content and delivery arranged ostensibly to spotlight subjects about which we declare we are most interested.

If it’s true that media takes its cue from the expressed tastes of its hungry viewers, then the majority clearly harbours an insatiable appetite for gruesome, depressing content.

It’s a tough swim against a raging current of negativity. Even the most robust and philosophical among us

must have limits on how much of it we can bear.

Sometimes, there’s a flicker of inspiration, like the piece about Parisian graffiti artist, Combo, who was assaulted this week by a small mob of young men previously unknown to him. He’d apparently completed painting a piece of graffiti on a wall in a Paris ghetto just moments before his assailants arrived to demand that he remove it. When he refused, the men attacked him and obscured his message themselves. Was it that he’d marred public property with his art that offended them? Was it his appearance, the colour of his skin? Was it the seven letter word he’d painted or maybe its connotation? Or was it that in spelling the word he’d used a crescent (Muslim) for the C, a Star of David (Judaism) for the X, and a cross (Christianity) for the T so that the three religious symbols appeared together in a single word for all to view? ‘Co-exist’.

Within moments of completing his work, the artist was assaulted and the word obscured. Statement and CounterStatement, one advocating peace, the other violence.

Just another sad news story in so many ways. Combo though, along with others who still have hope for humanity, turned the incident into something interesting. Combo’s ‘Co-Exist’ painting, meant to encourage peace between faiths after the horrific events last month

heightened already existing tensions, now appears in public spaces all around Paris in the form of a poster. Perhaps its ubiquitous presence will start a ripple that morphs into a roar for good. That kind of news story is worth hearing about.

The Prairies are covered with ice cream, or at least the potential to be i c e cream. This re c ipe is ad apte d fr o m o n e I c a m e ac r o s s i n a n o l d 1940’s Saskatchewan Farmer cookbook. I tried it twice this weekend as a desert and it got rave reviews with both groups, one on the farm and the other in Edmonton.

To gather the snow I went out into a farm field and found some freshly f a l l e n c r i s p s n o w. I s c o o p e d t h e fresh snow into an empty ice cream pail, and transported the farm snow, to Edmonton in the back of a pickup truck. The outside temperature that I successfully made this at was -18 degrees. I made it outside but we ate it inside. I also stirred a little cocoa

powder into a small amount to see what it would taste like, and it tasted like a chocolate frosty.

This dish would be great to take tobogganing, to add to the hot dog and marshmallow menu. Just put the milk mixture in a mason jar and take a large bowl and spoon to mix. You could ser ve it outside in cups that can double for use with a thermos of hot chocolate. I hope you get a chance to experience this amazing vintage Canadian prairie dish. Happy Winter.

Snow ice cream (made out of snow) 1 cup evaporated milk or cream 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 10 cups pristine freshly fallen dry snow (more or less) Combine the milk, sugar and va n i ll a i n a l ar g e b ow l a n d s t ir to dissolve the sugar. Take a measure cup or scoop outside and add in

I usually try to do a lot of cooking on Sundays, so that there are meals to pull out of the fridge and warm up for a least a few days into the work week. When that runs out, it ’s time to whip up a fast meal from scratch.

Lakeland College Students Jet-Off For Learning Lakeland College Submitted

While many students might seize Reading Week as their opportunity to rest and relax, several Lakeland College student clubs are using this time to travel and learn.

14 members of the Dairy Club will be heading south to Fresno, Calif. from Feb. 14 to 21. Club president Jake Vermeer, a

divided on which destination to travel to and decided to make both happen; 10 students will fly to San Antonio, Tex. and 12 students will land on the Big Island of Hawaii.

In Texas, students will check out a livestock show, spend a day at Texas A&M University and tour the following: crawfish farm and organic rice operation, gator farm, creamery and a 40,000-head feedlot. In Hawaii, students will visit the historic Parker

Ranch and make stops at a number of agriculture operations – including coffee, sugar cane and pineapple – among other destinations. First- and second-year students studying agricultural sciences and environmental sciences are participating in the trips.

Students in Lakeland’s animal health technology (AHT) club will also be learning abroad during Reading Week at the West-

ern Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas, Nev. Sixteen second-year AHT students and three staff members will attend the 87th annual conference, which will feature speaker sessions as well as wet labs and an exhibit hall.

The five-day event is the largest conference on veterinary medicine in the world that is open to veterinarians, technicians, assistants and managers.

“It’s one of the central spots in America for dairy and the timing is really nice because as you can imagine it’s pretty warm in California this time of year,” he says with a laugh.

“The trip is really about learning more about large-scale dairy. Their average is probably around a thousand cows per farm and we have been able to set up a couple of tours at some very large dairy farms – 8,000-cow dairy farms.”

Their trip will also include several tours with local industry members including Alta Genetics and Cargill, plus an opportunity to meet their American counterparts – the Cal Poly University Dairy Club. Sight-seeing at tourist attractions in San Francisco will round out their trip.

Previously the Dairy Club has travelled to Abbotsford, B.C. and the Netherlands to tour dairies. Vermeer says he’s interested in learning more about how large dairy farms manage and how they operate in the California weather climate.

“It’s an amazing opportunity. I don’t think a lot of people would do this on their own – it’s really the club that was able to organize it,” he says, noting the 20-member club is strong and active this year. “We won’t be able to do this when we go home to our own farms.”

The club’s annual semen raffle – which was held on Feb. 5 and brought in over $8,000 – helps with the cost of their trip. As well, Vermeer drew on his dairy industry contacts to secure approximately $4,000 in sponsorships for the club’s trip.

“It’s actually going to be quite an affordable trip for all of our members,” says Vermeer, a second-generation dairy farmer whose family’s 400-cow dairy farm is located southeast of Camrose, Alta. “We’re all really looking forward to seeing this totally different dairy setting.”

Following their trip, the Dairy Club plans to host a community tour of the college’s dairy barn during the Ag-Citing info session on March 13, as well as coordinate future activities with the local schools. Other upcoming projects for the Dairy Club include the purchase of a new hoof trimming chute.

When this capital project did not receive a green light, the club took matters in their own hands. In exchange for working at the Vermeer Dairy Farm, the club will be able to donate a hoof-trimming chute to Lakeland College’s Dairy Barn.

“This will really bring an educational and health aspect to the college farm,” says Vermeer.

The Community Closet Donates Back To Vermilion Community Marie Conboy Reporter

The Community Closet in Vermilion is a non profit organization run by dedicated volunteers, located on main street and sells recycled clothes and other used goods.

Once the rent and monthly bills are paid all funds are donated back into the Vermilion community to chosen groups usually three times a year.

Last Wednesday the following donations were made; the Vermilion Dance Association received $250, Vermilion Music Festival received $250, Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association and Dance Impressions Society both received $250.

J.R. Robson Senior Girls basket ball club received $500, the Auburndale United Church received $2,000 for repairs to the inside of the church and to repair ceiling damage.

Vermilion Skating Club received $500, which they said would pay for a week’s worth of ice, which they say will really help now that the numbers have doubled at the skating club.

The Tiger’s Midget Female minor hockey team also received $1,000 for their club.

Marwayne Hosts Farmer’s Spiel

Marwayne’s annual Farmer’s Spiel was held on Jan 30 and 31 with 18 teams participating.

This fun spiel has teams competing for commodities that they sell throughout the spiel to obtain money to buy their prizes with. A “rock closest to the hog line” may get you 200 bushels of canola where the “most rocks in play” may land you 20 – 1,000 pound steers.

The price board changes throughout the weekend so the teams try to sell at the high just like farmers do in the real world. This spiel is more about socializing and fun than the actual competitive game on the ice. Special thanks to Cargill-Marwayne for organizing the spiel. Next year, CPS-Marwayne will be in charge. VIBE Random Acts of Kindness

Last Friday the students from J.R.Robson and VES were out and about around the town of Vermilion performing random acts for Random Acts of Kindness Week. They handed out tea and cookies to people in the community, held doors open for elderly people and smiled and greeted everyone who passed. Rustlers Extend Winning Streak to Five Games

The Rustlers men’s basketball team extended their winning streak to five games after two victories against the Augustana Viking. The Rustlers beat the Viking 80 - 65 Friday night and 71 - 66 Saturday night.

Reflecting on Friday’s game at home coach Tom Groat said, “We played a solid game from the start to finish and never really gave Augustana a chance to upset us.” The game was still in question at halftime with the score 39-32 in favor of Lakeland College. The Rustlers came out strong in the second half with Stephen Jones leading the way with a number of power moves from inside the key. Jones would record his ninth double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds as the Rustlers took a comfortable 61 - 44 lead into the final quarter. Jones received player of the game honors for his effort. “Stephen has been a solid leader at both ends of the court this year. We count on him the score and rebound as well as to defend.” Groat commented.

Saturday night’s game was a very physical defensive game that saw both teams having difficulty scoring. The Rustlers held a slight 29-25 at halftime.

The Viking continued to apply defensive pressure and the Rustlers had trouble finding their scoring touch. The Viking lead 46-39 early in the fourth quarter but the Rustlers went on a 18 - 4 run to take the lead 57 - 51 with 5:12 remaining in the game. Groat felt the play of point guard Josh Manpantay made the difference, “Josh was the game-changer for us tonight. He took our team on his shoul-

der and would not let us lose.” Magpantay had 8 of his 10 points in the fourth quarter.

KJ McGrew was awarded game star for his 15 points and 5 rebounds.

The Rustlers record improves to 13-9 with two games remaining in the regular season. The Rustlers sit in third place in the north division behind NAIT (19-1) and Concordia (14-8) and have secured a spot in the conference play-offs. The Rustlers will close out the regular season with a pair of games versus The Kings College Eagles (4-16). The Rustlers will travel to Edmonton on Friday and return home on Saturday for their final game of the regular season. Game times on Saturday will be 6:00 p.m. (women) and 8:00 p.m. (men).

Benoit Makes Funding Presentations And Announcements For Vermilion Area Marie Conboy Reporter

MP for Vegreville Wainwright Leon Benoit made the Funding presentation of $14,000 to the Town of Vermilion at the Council Chambers as well as a presentation of $11,440 to FOCUS at the Focus building in Vermilion on Monday, February 9.

The funding was allocated from the Economic Action Plan 2013, part of the Enabling Accessibility Fund to improve communities and workplace accessibility for Canadians with disabilities. FOCUS said they will be using the funding to improve their main office building by making it barrier free by installing automated doors. Vermilion Elementary School Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted On Februar y 6 VES held our annual Science Fair 21 projects (by 36 students) were on display to the public in the afternoon, after having been judged during the morning. Nine projects were deemed excellent by the judges. We would like to thank Aiden, Darian, Jake, Karlene, and Lee of the Lakeland College Judging Team for their time and expertise; their mentors, Lottie Kingsmill and Peter Walsh, for facilitating their participation, and our veteran judges, David Eremko, Bernie Huedepohl, Ann Lockwood, and Terry Welker.

All parents are encouraged to come to our monthly Parent Advisory Council meetings. In February’s meeting, Mrs. Heinrick and Miss Gadke shared about the kindergarten program; what has taken place so far this year and the excitement that is still to come.

We celebrated 100 days of school on February 11. The Grade 1 students each made a project to represent 100.

There were 100 goldfish crackers in a fish bowl, 100 photos of the same student over the years, 100 pieces of pasta in the shape of a picture, and many, many more. Grade 2 students brought in food bank items and then counted them. Great job Grade 1 and 2.

During Random Acts of Kindness week, VES par ticipated in several a c t i v i t i e s . E a c h te a c h e r h a d fo u r “Catch a Kid Being Kind ” lanyards to hand out each day. Every student was given a kindness checklist and encouraged to complete as many acts of kindness as they could for the week.

K-3 students wrote simple messages of kindness to high school students at Lloyd Comprehensive High School and then the high school students wrote back to our students. Grade 4-6 students wrote positive messages to other students in their classes.

Mannville School successfully participated in Winter Walk Day. Over 180 staff and students braved the chilly weather to participate in the 25 minute walk around Mannville. Thanks to everyone that made this day a success!

Last week was a busy one for us. Our Junior High Leadership class planned a “Buy A Crush for Your Crush” Fundraiser for Valentine’s Day. Mrs. Campbell’s Grade 3 class had their Cupcake Fundraiser and of course we hit ‘100 Day’ where classes celebrated in their own way.

Mrs. Campbell’s Grade 3 class held their Annual Valentine Sale in an effort to encourage global citizenship. The students enjoyed icing and decorating the cupcakes that morning and selling them at noon. Their sale raised $209.

All of the money will go towards helping to fund loans for individuals through the KIVA organization. When the loans are repaid, the students will again reinvest their money to help other individuals with their worthwhile personal or business projects.

Mrs. Miller’s Grade 2 class filled out a 100 day of school book answering questions like what would they buy for $100 or if they could have 100 of something what would it be.

In Miss. Cusack’s Grade 3 math class, they played a game called Roll the Dice to 100! They had to roll a dice and add the numbers to get all the way to 100. They also had to estimate to see how many rolls it would take to get to 100, and a few students were only a couple off on their estimate. In Mrs. Murray’s grade three math class students drew a diagram that had a perimeter of 100 cm.

In Phys. Ed. 3 and 4 the students enjoyed doing 100 activities! At each station they had a new activity and had to do the activity ten times. Some different activities were lunges, jumping jacks, giant steps, hop, and a few more. They then challenged themselves to see how many different exercises they could do in 100 seconds. They realized, along with Miss. Cusack, in a short time that 100 seconds was a lot longer than it seemed and squats are very tough.

Mrs. Amero’s Grade 4 students created a bucket list of the top five events they would like to have accomplished by the time they are 100. In Math they came up with 100 ways to make 100. This was a very challenging activity but the students persevered and everyone was amazed with what they came up with.

The Grade 5 class travelled in a time machine to when they would be 100 years old! Using a phone app, all of the Grade 5 students were transformed into their 100 year old self. The class enjoyed seeing everyone old and had quite a

laugh over all of the pictures. They then wrote about what their life will be like at that age. Between scooter racing and shopping at the Co-op they all are going to be great senior citizens!

The curling teams are having a very successful season! The senior high mixed team won second place in the Jim Smith Memorial bonspiel in Vermilion and have been practicing for the district playoffs as well as curling weekly in the Mannville Curling Club mixed league.

Kim Ruttan, a former NAIT curling team member, helped the senior high mixed and Grade 8 boys team hone their skills for their upcoming competitions.

The junior high teams played well in the BTJHAA Northern in Innisfree. The Grade 7/8 team won one and lost two games, and the Grade eight boys team came home with the silver medal. This team, Max Amero, Justin Kane, Kayle Tod and Zach Polishuk then travelled to Irma to

Two elementary teams also represented Mannville in the Jim Smith Memorial bonspiel. There was a Grade 4 girls team, and a Grade 4-6 boys team. They curled their hearts out and showed great enthusiasm for the sport, whether they were winning or losing. They even combined players to create a mixed team and played extra games to help even the draw out.

The curlers have been having fun and have been excellent ambassadors of our school and community!

Former Psychiatric nurse Glenyce Hughes says she was at a time in her life when she had to either make some changes to her lifestyle or learn to cope with the everyday difficult situations that were causing her unhappiness and stress. That is when she made the conscious choice to begin what she calls, her journey to infinite possibilities.

After working at a local non-profit health care organization for 13 years, Hughes found herself not completely enjoying what she was doing so she embarked on a somewhat non-typical path which to many skeptical people might seem a bit shadowed, she became a medium.

Mediumship is the practice of certain people, known as mediums, who claim to facilitate communication between the spirits of those who have passed away, and living human beings.

Originally from Turtleford, Saskatchewan, Hughes and her husband make their home in Vermilion, when she is not attending public speaking engagements, holding seminars or hosting her online radio show.

Hughes also works as an inspirational speaker teaching people how to tap into positive feelings and achieve all they can out of life.

Hughes says her teaching techniques are different from most, as she works with the individual to find the possibilities and “Being the changes you would like to see in the world.” She says her basic fundamentals are primarily laughter, fun, family,

Anticipation has been building every since the first day of school for the Grade One students. Finally, after keeping track of each school day, the long-awaited Hundredth Day arrived on Wednesday, February 11 with a flurry of excitement and energy. The entire day was spent doing activities that involved 100, from counting games, to a treasure hunt of 100

numbers, to making structures from 100 objects. The students were applauded as they proudly explained and answered questions about their 100-Day projects.

The projects are on display and as the older students take a look at the new creations, there are many that remember the project they made years ago. It is a day in first grade to remember!

We also celebrated Valentine’s Day last week on Friday, February 13. Many students and staff took the opportunity to wear their finest garments from their wardrobes as we celebrated “Formal

Day” as well. The high school students were busy looking for their matc h throughout the day. Archie found Betty, Fred found Wilma, and Prince William found Kate. The winners of find-yourmatch were Karley Dieken and Kale McIntyre. The middle level students watched movies and then had a dance in the Father Cordeau for the last two periods of the afternoon. The elementary classes enjoyed sharing food, treats and Valentines with their classmates and playing a variety of games.

Mrs. Eriksen’s Chemistry 30 class tested their problem solving skills when they designed and built their own calorimeters. Students burned peanuts and Cheesies to determine if their calorimeter was more efficient than Mrs. Eriksen’s original calorimeter demonstration. Not all of the original designs were able to hold in the heat as expected, but

designs were changed on the fly. Fun was had by all and no fire alarms were set off in the process!

Congratulations to the Jr. High Boys Basketball team for a very well played game against J. R. Robson on Thursday, February 12. The boys were victorious as they played with great skill and determination. The Jr. High season will wrap up next weekend as the teams play in the Highway 16 Championships. The Sr. High teams played in the J. R. Robson tournament this past weekend. They will be busy preparing for zones and provincials, which take place in March.

End Of Season Reflections From The Rocks Team

It was clear to see there was disappointment with the way this year’s league ended after talking with the Rock’s team players Logan Sherwood and Colton Katuski, along with their Coach Darcy Fadden last week. “Obviously this season could have went better,” said rightwing player Logan Sherwood. “I thought we had the potential this year but we just couldn’t seem to jive together. Some of our players played excellent all season like goal keeper Kurt McClean for example.” Colton Katuski said he will not be coming back next season as he has been accepted to college. Sherwood said this will be his second year with the Rock. “I started last year as a rookie and I’m trying to improve.” Sherwood also said that he believes the team has what it takes to win next season with all the new talent coming up. Coach Darcy Fadden said the team “underperformed” this season.”The goal was to be fourth or fifth. With nine losses in the season, those losses were only by two goals in each game.”
