Leckie & Associates Celebrates Ten Years In Vermilion Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Boston Pizza Louge was filled with clients, friends and business associates of Leckie & Associates as the accounting firm celebrated its tenth anniversary in Vermilion. Vermilion Managing Partner Greg Dewing, said it was great to see so many clients and busi-

ness friends come out to celebrate with the staff and partners. The evening saw staff of Boston Pizza serve a full array of tasty treats and beverages which was also followed by an anniversary cake to mark the occasion.

Leckie and Associates is a locally owned accounting firm which was started approximately 28 years ago by founding partner James Leckie and has now

grown to incorporate three locations, Lloydminster, Vermilion and Provost.

The company currently has eight full-time partners of which five of them started as students with the firm. Leckie’s services offered are tax planning, management consulting, corporate and personal income tax, financial statement presentations and bookkepping and data processing. The firm is also an approved

training office for the current Chartered Professional Accountants (CPS) program.

Leckie has also donated to various community organizations including the Vermilion Splash Park, Santa’s Anonymous, Vermilion Food Back, Festival of Trees, Habitat for Humanity, Vermilion Ag Society as well as various charity golf tournaments and sports teams.

Scotiabank Celebrates Mabel Smart’s Retirement

There were many tears shed when the presentation took place which signifies Smart has played an integral part in the daily operations of the branch as well as her workfamily’s lives. Replacing her will be Colin Inalsingh who comes to Vermilion from the Town of Whitecourt where he worked for six years in financial management. Inalsingh says he will be working to make the bank more active in the community. Smart says she will spend her retirement years with family, enjoying some neglected hobbies and travelling. It is with deep sorrow that our family mourns the loss of David D. Holt. David died peacefully in his sleep on January 16, 2015: while in the exceptional care of the physicians and nurses at the ermilion health care complex.

Born on October 28, 1942; Dave was a husband to Adrie and father to Jason and Justin. He was Mom’s devoted and loving companion, Jason’s mentor in life and business and Justin’s biggest fan, on and off the ice.

He is loved and remembered by his Wife Adrie of Vermilion, sons Jason and Justin Holt both of Vermilion; his brothers Michael Holt of Edmonton, Bruce Holt of Calgary and Peter (Terry) Holt of Morinville; sisters Barbara (Bob) Tien of Calgary, Susan (Rob) Desbarats of Calgary; sisters-in-law Mary Anne (Steve) May of Candle Lake, SK and Joan Wintonyk of Saskatoon.

He was predeceased by his parents Vincent and Irene Holt and brother-in-law Lawrence Wintonyk.

He will be forever remembered in our hearts... as a man who loved his family and sought to provide them with every opportunity to cultivate a joy-filled life; woven tightly in a myriad of deep and rich experiences.

Fifth Annual VIBE Day A Success Karen Nedzielski Reporter

320 Students from around the area were getting their “VIBE” on during the fifth annual VIBE Mental Wellness Day activities at J.R. Robson school held last Wednesday, January 28.

Ve r m i l i o n I s B e i n g Em p o w e r e d (VIBE) is a mental health capacitybuilding project that runs at ever y school in Vermilion and within the surrounding communities.

With numerous sessions for students to attend, participants were kept busy learning different skills as well as understanding mental health issues facing many young people their ages.

Students from Mannville, Clandonald, St. Jerome’s, VES as well as J.R. Robson were shuffled from class to class which included Healthy Relationships, Developmental Assets, Self Esteem, tobacco and addictions, art work, woodworking, yoga and mindfulness, speed stacking, be fit for life as demonstrated by two alumni members of the Fire E.T.C. school, as well as team building hosted by members of the Vermilion RCMP detachment.

VIBE Coordinator Pat Calyniuk said if it were not for the more than 50 adult volunteers, the event would not be the success it is.

VIBE’s next event will be Pink Day, an anti-bullying awareness day, which is scheduled for February 25.

RCMP Reports This first vehicle was eventually recovered by police, and officers arrested its two occupants just outside the Lloydminster city limits. Arrested was a 20-year-old man from Lloydminster and a 29-year-old man from Onion Lake. Neither arrested suspects nor officers were injured during this occurrence.

The second vehicle was not found.

Police Looking For Information In Serious Police Incident On January 27, 2015, at approximately 3 a.m., Lloydminster RCMP officers responded to a call of a break-and-enter in progress to a liquor store in the 5000 block of 18 Street in Lloydminster, Alberta. Two pickup trucks were soon identified as being connected to this break-and-enter.

A spike belt was deployed at the intersection of 44 Street and 40 Avenue in order to stop the first suspect vehicle. An incident occurred at the spike belt deployment location which caused an officer to discharge his/her service pistol.

The truck was last seen heading north on 75 Avenue past 67 Street and was later reported as stolen by the registered owner. It is to be noted that the truck is equipped with a green under-glow light and may or may not be activated.

The RCMP is asking for anyone who may have information about the break-andenter, the incident at the intersection of 44 Street and 40 Avenue or the whereabouts of the 1993 Chevrolet truck, to contact the Lloydminster detachment at 780-808-8400 or Crime Stoppers. If the second vehicle is located by the public they are asked not to approach it, but to call 911 or their local police.

The RCMP Lloydminster General Investigation Section unit is investigating the break-and-enter and theft of vehicle.

Encountering Emergency Vehicles G.M. (Gordon) YETMAN, Cpl Operations Nco Vermilion RCMP Detachment Submitted

The Vermilion RCMP would like to remind motorists of what to do should they encounter an emergency vehicle with emergency equipment activated (lights and sirens) on the highway. This reminder is in relation to reports from local firefighters that vehicles have been passing emergency vehicles that are travelling on the highways with all emergency equipment activated.

The Traffic Safety Act states that a motor vehicle shall pull over to the right shoulder of the road and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed thus yielding right of

way to the emergency vehicle. The Act also states that a motor vehicle shall not follow with in 150 m of an emergency vehicle with emergency equipment activated. It is definitely unlawful to pass an emergency vehicle with emergency lights activated. Drivers that commit these offences may receive a monetary fine of up to $172, on the higher end, if it is discovered and evidence exists that the driver impeded the emergency workers in doing their job ie saving a person’s life or otherwise rendering aid, that driver could face criminal charges as well as civil liabilities.

The RCMP would also like to remind drivers that the speed limit when passing and emergency or tow truck that is stopped with emergency lights activated is 60 km/hr.

When approaching an emergency vehicle or tow truck with emergency lights activated stopped on the highway 1 clear lane must exist in order to maintain highway speed while passing. Speed fines double when a driver contravenes this act. A person travelling on an 2 lane undivided highway that maintains a speed of 100 km/hr while passing an emergency vehicle and or tow truck with emergency lights activated will receive a monetary fine of $529.

These laws exist to ensure emergency personnel get to an emergency as quickly as possible and are safe while preforming this job. Please remember that one day that emergency vehicle driving down the highway may be rushing to save you or someone you love.

February Is Distracted Driving Enforcement Month G.M. (Gordon) YETMAN, Cpl Operations Nco Vermilion RCMP Detachment Submitted

The Vermilion RCMP would like to remind everyone about the dangers of distracted driving. Distracted driving can encompass a number of activities, from using a hand-held cell phone or texting, to

reading or putting on make-up. Under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, distracted driving constitutes a $172 fine and applies to all roads. February is distracted driving month and special attention will be paid to people who are driving while talking on the phone, texting, or performing other activities that take their attention off the road. Distracted driving is quickly catching up to drunk driving and speed-related collisions as the

major cause of death on the roads. Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times more likely to get into collisions that result in injury. Please don’t let your own inattention to the road result in injury or death. Keep the dangers of distracted driving in mind when you’re thinking of making that one phone call on the road or sending that one text while driving. It could very well be your last.

Be careful and drive safe.

Nice Weather Dangerous Conditions Lorna Hamilton Editor

Over the last couple of weeks we have been blessed with spring like conditions and while it has been a joy to be able to walk outside not bundled up and walking around like penguins, the penguin shuffle has definitely been needed.

The snow was melting at a considerable rate and draining down into the sidewalks and roads causing some pretty treacherous walking conditions. I for one discovered it in a rather embarrassing miss-step.

I was coming out of a local business last week and stepped off the sidewalk into what I thought was just water pooled along the sidewalk. I quickly discovered my observation was somewhat misjudged when my feet began to slip out from under me and with a slightly overcorrected attempt at not falling, I ended up practically doing a face plant into the street. Of course embarrassment takes over in the first initial seconds of any fall and you quickly try to pick yourself up off the ground and hope and pray that no

one was around to see your unfortunate mishap. Once I had picked myself up and looked around to see, the pain factor took over and there I was standing there checking out the road rash on my hand and feeling the pain in my wrist which started pretty much right away.

I got myself home changed my dirty soaking wet clothes and debated on whether or not a trip to the emergency department was in order. I did end up there as after a few minutes my fingers became numb and cold and the cut on my hand needed some attention, thankfully I didn’t break anything and home I went again.

I don’t blame the businesses at all, as it seems next to impossible to keep the sidewalks and streets free of the shiny clear ice during weather like this and I also see the owners everyday out there trying their best to keep the walks and areas around their business clean.

There has been numerous falls over the past couple weeks and some were not as lucky as I was being able to walk away generally unscathed, there has been some who have broken bones so my thought is how can we keep ourselves safe from the perils of glorious weather but not so glorious walking conditions?

A few ways we can try and help keep

ourselves in an upright position instead of spending most of our time on our bums or hands are actually kind of basic, but in our busy everyday lives when we are hustling here there and everywhere and we have a tendency to forget the things we generally know.

Firstly, select proper footwear. Us women especially are the evil doers when it comes to this one simple rule. Flat footwear with rubber soles provides better traction on ice and snow than leather soled or high-heeled shoes. Buy a pair of ice cleats, I know they are not the most fashionable accessory but it will definitely help on icy patches.

Do the penguin shuffle. It may seem like its taking up some of your precious time but it is a rather effective means of staying on your feet. Smaller strides and shuffling your feet across an icy patch with your toes pointed outward slightly, keeps your center of balance under you where it belongs.

Keep your hands out of your pockets, you may need them to help keep your balance as your shuffling across an icy spot.

If you see a handrail use it, it’s one of the best ways to prevent slips and falls on areas that have slight or steep grades and on stairs, it’s there for a purpose so why

not utilize it.

Getting in and out of your car is one of the biggest fall risks, we often have a false sense of security around our vehicle and don’t pay attention to where our feet are going.

The biggest prevention of a fall is to pay attention. We need to scan the areas in which we are walking and if you see anything that shines, has water on it, has visible ice or snow slow down, take care in your footing.

If you do happen to take a fall try to fall on the more padded areas of your body, try and keep your muscles relaxed as it can help prevent injury. It may seem a little weird as it is human nature to catch yourself with your hands but it’s actually better to catch yourself on the part of your arms between your wrist and elbow, its meatier and can take the impact better then snapping your wrist.

Our elderly is at the biggest risk of falling during these thaw and freeze times in our community so offer a helping hand if you see a senior out and about and trying their best to maneuver around the icy conditions. Offer to carry their packages to their vehicle as the extra weight can set off their balance. A helping hand is always a good hand.

Ham Radios Making A Comeback Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Did you ever think about what would happen in the event of a disaster and all modern-day communications were cut off?

What if the only means of communication was through Ham radio systems?

Well if this interested you then the upcoming Amateur Radio License Course maybe just what you are looking for.

Classes will be taking place every Wednesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. from February 18 to June 3 at the Vermilion Armoury.

SASK-ALTA Radio Club President Don Henry, has held a radio license for more than 30 years and says he has experienced a number of interesting situations with his

friend wanted to know if he was safe and able to access the needed medication.

Henry radioed the US Red Cross on his high frequency radio and reached an operator in Salt Lake City, Utah. Henry relayed the message and approximately an hour later the friend called stating the uncle had been located in a shelter and had the diabetes medication he needed.

Henry says “it (the radio system) worked.”

When telephone lines are not in service, communication can still be made.

Should a similar situation happen here and the area is left without power, Henry says the Armoury has a generator that can power the radio system and provide communication to emergency resources, if needed.

Henry says there are many aspects for operating a ham radio including building antennas, radios or amplifiers and some do it for the social aspect.

“Pull out the microphone and make a call and see who in the world answers back,” He says. “It’s not your grandfather’s ham radio, its cutting-edge technology. Contacts with other hams can now be made key board to keyboard. This is some of the most advanced cutting edge technology with over one hundred different digital modes that have been created by ham radio operators. This hobby is a marriage of radios and computers.”

Henry says with today’s technology, the

use of computers and radios lets us send messages and photos around the world and the amateur radio community has put more than 60 satellites into space.

I am enjoying one of the nicest Januarys I can remember, spring weather and no snow to plough...an outdoor winter paradise for us in the northern mid-west. However as good as us Canadians are at hockey and on the ice, with all the melting and rain, we are all forced to walk lightly as if all the mid-west was one big skating rink. Use care as many are falling and getting hurt.

Ice was a whole outdoor adventure in itself for me yesterday, as I finally got out there on an ice fishing adventure. It was bad enough just to walk out the door and make it to my truck slipping and sliding on ice. Then there’s driving on the ice on rural roads. Well that was a tip toe thru the tulips compared to the ice fishing adventure. Got a call from some outstanding friends that are also members of our archery club. “Be at my house at 5:30, we are heading north ice fishing.” That’s all I needed to hear as most of my gear was already to go. The trip was about an hour north of Highway 16 and were on the ice still in pure darkness.

Now ice being a key part of the adventure, or as mentioned on the lake an adventure in itself, all the snow had melted and the ice surface was just that glare ice. As it warmed in the morning sun, the ice got wet.

Ice is slippery, wet ice is…indescribable slippery. As pumped as I was to be out on the ice for a full day of adventure, nothing could be done in a hurry and it took a half dozen scurry steps to equal a normal step distance.

It seemed for every half dozen of those steps two were backwards and balancing was like walking on a tightrope, but as morning light greeted us, we had holes drilled in the ice and our gear and huts set up.

We all set an extra “Tip Up” which is a nifty little system that is compact and has its own reel, line and drag System. It sets over the hole and has an integral florescent little flag system attached to a spring, that has a flag down attached to reel system. When the a fish, preferably the tasty Northern Pike comes along and takes your lure, the flag tips up, hence the name. This allows you to be within 30 meters at another hole jigging for the equally colorful and tasty Perch.

We were ready to fish, my tip up set and we all dropped hooks at the same time and bam, bam, bam, I had three perch on the ice in minutes. Oh it just doesn’t get better than this.

The morning was warm and still and we simply set comfortably and relaxed in our comfortable lawn chairs directly on the ice.

That is until someone yells “flag up”!

Well the idea is to get to the Tip Up as soon and fast as possible to “set the hook”, as the Northern Pike will take your lure and “run” with it, un-spooling line at the speed of lightning quick fish. Now, you want to watch something funny, watch a excited fishermen trying to run thirty meters on wet glare ice.

The faster one ran the further you got from the tip-up I am sure. So one had to be deliberate and surefooted at worst.

One of the “Brad Squad” (when I yell “Brad” at our club’s archery winter leagues everyone stops as half of them are named Brad) was the first to have a “flag up”. I laughed as Brad tried to run and stay vertical, but he reached his tip up safely and like a professional, “set” the lure and hauled in a nice 6-7 pound Northern pike.

It just so happens that Northern pike and Perch are my two most favorite eating fish hands down. In fact Northern Pike are my top choice and wouldn’t trade them for Lake Trout, any trout or even fresh salmon.

After congratulations on the well done job…not only Brad’s catching the nice Pike but also making it to his Tip Up without breaking his neck, I admired the fish, drooled and said “Oh that’s going to be a tasty treat.”

It wasn’t long and “Flags Up” was yelled again, this time, my tip up, well after seeing

Around The Campfire Brads delicious Pike on the ice, I was off and running, well kind of, I remember my little feet shuffling as fast as they could move. It seemed the faster I ran the faster I didn’t go!

I was even spinning into a 360 in complete circles as I tried to run in a straight line to my tip up, I probably looked like a professional figure skater performing such good acrobats. The judges would have surely scored me a solid “8” across the board.

But I reached the tip up miraculously up right and unscathed. By time my ice performance was over the big northern pike decide to take my lure for a swim half way across the lake. The reel peeled off line and was near empty as I grabbed the line and proceeded to set the lure…it was at that exact precise point in time the Northern Pike grew tired of this game and “spit the hook”. Before he “spit the hook” I had a split second of the glory tug and feeling of that giant “fish that got away”, and I yelled “after that performance I deserve that fish”…I heard one of my fans say, “I know right?”

But at least the perch were still biting, and later that afternoon when I thought it couldn’t get any better the Brad Squad pulled out the frying pans. We had a steel drum cut

and half with a cooking grate welded to one side. We had a campfire blazing hot and the aroma of a fresh fish fry in the air. I am pretty sure I ate more than I caught and half of Brad’s nice Northern Pike, Only thing better than a shore lunch is a fish fry on ice.

When the Smoke clears The only thing as good as an outdoor adventure is the memory of that same adventure, get out there!

The Miracle Of Life Franklin Wolters Columnist

As a boy growing up in the wild, then Grizzly Bear Coulee country, I experienced life being created in so many ways. Every spring when the calves were being born and our milk cows freshened as they say, we saw life and were amazed at the whole cycle of it.

All the wild life was going about procreating and it was so wonderful to see. Hens would start clucking and sitting on a nest and soon little chicks would manifest themselves and you’d see chicks peeping out from under. Birds of all kinds were building nests and very soon too we’d see the parents bringing food for their young. Every creature had a way to pass on their life to their young and keep the species going and not be extinct!

Even all the growing plants, grass even or trees has a way to make seed or viable roots to try to keep their particular part of the scheme alive.

I remember the hours of cranking the fanning mill and cleaning the seed grain that would make our new crop, and realizing how important it was that we found viable seed that would sprout and grow. It always amazed me that that little seed had all the qualities of its parent plant and could store them inside until the proper conditions were present to bring forth new life.

Even bugs like mosquitoes and such can somehow survive the rigors of our winter weather and come back spring after spring to bring us their form of joy!

Along with the beginning of life we also witnessed the experience of what happens when that mystery of life is gone and only the shell is left with no more way to be mobile then a stone.

What is that little spark exactly, and where did it come from? It’s all around us everywhere, but somehow it’s never been explained to me in a scientific way that makes any sense, at least to me.

Anyone who follows the news can see, it seems to me anyway, that the regard for life is not recognized as important the way we see life being recklessly wasted in so many ways in world turmoil, the carnage of traffic, and so called “accidents” that are in so many cases simply a result of someone not taking the task of driving seriously enough!

We see people using firearms to take what they want by force and killing people who try to control them. I see there are countries involved in civil war trying to control their people by force and lives are being forfeit in the process. Especially horrible when it involves so many children.

regard to life even extending to our wild- had created itself and had no owner but just life when you see stories of animals created itself! wasted because they have some part that That watch is not nearly as complex as is required for some ladies pleasure. For every animal or plant that is in existence there is naturally a means for that life to be sustained, because everything needs food to live and to grow. Isn’t it wonderful that everything on earth has been supplied with the food or means to keep itself alive and healthy.

Think of how nature has grass for grass eaters and animals for prey are provided for those who require flesh. Hard to accept all this happened by some whim of chance.

2015 CVR ROADSIDE MOWING TENDER “A sustainable, Vibrant, and Diversified Community with Opportunities for All”

ALBERTA CENTRAL EAST WATER CORP.

The County of Vermilion River is now accepting price proposals for roadside mowing operations for the 2015 season. The tender is for a one year contract expiring after the 2015 mowing season is completed with contract renewal for up to 2 years at CVR’s option.

Mowing operations include:

1. One pass shoulder cut on approximately 700 miles of municipal roadside.

Shoulder cut will be completed with a 10-15’ deck mower between July 15 to August 15. Price proposals for the roadside mowing will be submitted as cost/mile mowed (both sides of road).

2. Mowing shall be done so that minimal or no debris is deposited on the road surface.

Side mount or offset hitch equipment must be used so that the tractor remains on the road surface.

3. Quality Control Targets—Cutting height should be less than approx. 6”. Contractors may be requested to re-mow any excessively ragged or high cutting height areas without additional compensation.

Contractors for the County of Vermilion River are required to provide proof of Worker’s Compensation Board coverage. Contractors are responsible for providing the required implements, operators and fuel.

Maps for the work area will be made available at the County Office. Contractors will be required to work around roadsides covered by haying agreements with adjoining landowners. Contractor will be required to coordinate work with County of Vermilion River operated mowing equipment.

We c ouldn’t see him, but the proprietor of the store called out the moment we crossed the threshold. He emerged, seemingly from a space too small for a man his size, then immediately apologized for the state of the place. He inferred that it was temporary---as though a new shipment of ancient, smelly books had just arrived---but evidence suggested otherwise. Shelves covered every wall, as you’d expect, but the floor was mostly obscured by books, too. Not that dishevelment and general chaos has ever deterred me from entering and losing my sense of time for an hour or two while exploring the contents of a second hand bookstore. I love these kinds of places. I step over the piles and slip sideways to reach the farthest section at the back. The store, appearing the size of a matchbox upon entry, unfolds into a labyrinth of amazing endlessness once inside. There’s even a spiral staircase leading to a dimly lit basement. Briefly, I consider the weird possibilities. I hear that Tom Waits song, “What’s He Building in There?” Were there any witnesses to our entering this place?

Soon, curiosity overrides irrational suspicion and I’m kneeling on some flattened magazines attempting to read titles sideways in pale light. Where’s a good flashlight when you need it?

Independent bookstores and the people who run them are becoming a rare find in many places. Like a once loved but now impractical possession, they have almost entered the status of fondly remembered nostalgia. Gabrielle Zevin’s novel, “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry”, is set almost entirely in a charming, albeit non-lucrative small town bookshop. It’s a vision of idyllic contentment----except for an empty cash register and the existential dissatisfaction of a lonely bookseller----, a booklover’s fantasy.

“What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore it knows it’s not fooling a soul,” declares Neil Gaiman’s character Hinzelmann in his novel, “American Gods”.

I consider this as I do my best both to respond to the proprietor’s comments and dodge him so I can browse through his bookshelves in contemplative silence. His intentions are friendly, I think, but to some ears they could be interpreted as rants from a disgruntled cynic. He mimics what I guess are the voices of customers he’s encountered or imagines having encountered, uttering things like: “Oh, I’ve got a degree and a phone, I don’t have any need of old books! I don’t even know how to read.” His voice gets all high-pitched and weedly, his London accent exaggerated in what I suppose is intended to accentu-

A hot bowl of soup is a reward ing pleasure on cold winter days. Several weeks ago I featured my bacon and onion potato soup recipe. This shrimp chowder is a delicious and creamy variation on that recipe.

This recipe has been altered by removing the four strips of chopped bacon and adding chopped cooked shrimp instead. You can use a can of drained shrimp or purchase fresh cooked or raw shrimp. If you are using raw shrimp you will have to cook it in boiling water until the grey colored shrimp turn pink.

Drain the shrimp and when cooled remove the tail using your hands and the dark vein using a paring knife. If you are using froze pre-cleaned, deveined and cooked shrimp you only need to

plunge them into boiling water for a few minutes until well heated through.

Chop the shrimp into soup size bits after cooking, unless you are using the canned shrimp, which do not require chopping. A can of shrimp is approximately 1 cup, but if you are using the fresh shrimp the amount of shrimp can be increased to up to 2 cups.

I also made this soup using coconut milk with very good results, so that is an option for anyone with a dairy allergy.

This soup uses a roux (pronounced rue or roo) to provide a thick and creamy texture. A roux is a thickener used in French cooking usually made of equal parts of flour and a fat such as butter, bacon drippings or lard.

Shrimp is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. The power ful antioxidant astaxanthin is what gives the shrimp its pinky coral color. The abundance of nutrients found in shrimp include selenium, vitamin A, E, B12, B3, B5, B6, phosphorus, choline, iodine, copper, omega 3 and zinc. Note that shrimp

does contain cholesterol and may not be a good choice for those with body cholesterol issues. Shrimp is an excellent source of low calorie, high nutrient protein.

Shrimp chowder 4 red potatoes 1 tablespoon butter 1 yellow onion chopped 1 grated carrot 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons all purpose flour 1 tablespoon butter 1/2 cup cream 4 cups milk (dairy or coconut) 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 cup chopped cooked shrimp 1/2 teaspoon dill (optional) Peel , cut and boil potatoes until cooked. Fry the bacon until crisp. Cut into small pieces.

Sauté the onion and grated carrot in the first tablespoon of butter. When the onions have softened, remove the onion and carrot

mixture into a bowl.

In the bottom of the same frying pan, continue to make the roux. To make the roux melt 2 tablespoons butter in the bottom of the frying pan, then add the 2 table spoons of flour. Cook for 1 minute stirring, add the milk one half cup at a time and cook stirring the milk in and continue stirring until the milk is combined and the mixture has thickened. Do this until 2 cups of the milk have been added into the roux .

When the potatoes are cooked, drain away the water and remove half of the potatoes and leave the other half in the pot. Mash the potatoes in the pot with cream and the 1 tablespoons butter. In the pot with the mashed potatoes add the reaming 2 cups of milk, the carrot and onion mixture, the cooked shrimp, the salt and pepper and stir over heat.

Cut the remaining potatoes into half inch cubes and add to the soup. Add the dill if desired and serve. For an extra flavor burst you can serve with a squirt of lemon juice or lemon wedges.

Our public speaking / presentation night is February 20 at Lakeland College.

Our club decided to apply for the opportunity to host a Regional Sheep Workshop later this spring. Date and location to be announced.

The canine project members will be meeting Jan 24 or 25 – yet to be confirmed.

Our next meeting will be Feb 6/15 at the Ag Society with a Judging workshop.

new talent and advanced in the trust department when they demonstrated the ability to create some fascinating gymnastic formations. Hands down, I think their efforts paid for rent that day!!

Although hockey isn’t a school sport, it does affect the environment of the school.

When the players enjoy success on the ice, it has a ripple effect to many of their accomplishments at school and this, in turn spills over into the creation of our group’s atmosphere. Over the last week, Clay Radesh and Cruise Bensmiller (Pee Wee), Brenton Romanchuk (Atom – Tier I), and Ethan Warawa (Atom – Tier III) progressed to the provincial rounds and played some fantastic hockey. Way to show spirit, boys!!

One of our school goals is to improve reading comprehension. How is this being achieved? Over the last few weeks, addi-

tional Reading classes were implemented for the elementary students. Using the Reading A-Z philosophy, students have been benchmarked and grouped according to their reading abilities. During this class time they will spend time in their groups expanding their capabilities and comprehension by completing guided reading activities so they can advance to the next level. The students are feeling successful and are encouraged to see the progression and improvement gained!!

As the semester came to an end, the school and community united to host the annual Charity All Star Game. With the home team consisting of staff, students, central office dignitaries and community members playing against the Media All Stars, they made the evening of January 29th a night to remember. Although the

Media All Stars won 8-7, the school and community members were the real victors!

Proceeds from the silver collection, silent auction, raffle tickets and 50/50 will go towards the Dewberry School’s healthy initiative plan and the improvements to the Dewberry Arena.

Innisfree 4H Multi Club Report Madison Isley, Club Reporter Submitted

Our club has been very busy. We are all having a lot of fun!

In Outdoors we went to the CFR in November and to Launch Pad/Trampoline World in December. We are hoping to go to Camrose next to play underwater hockey and go on the Luge track –like in the Olympics!

In Crafts we made wreaths for the auction at the Library’s Holiday in the Hallway Celebration. Now we have started to make a hook latching 4H logo for the 2016, hundredth anniversary of 4H in Canada. All the kids will take a turn at making it.

In Foods we have made banana bread from scratch and for the District Dance we made Camo Cupcakes. For our next meeting, we are going to make supper for everyone. We will make spaghetti and homemade sauce, caesar salad with homemade dressing, garlic bread, fresh squeezed

In Photography, the kids are going to have a workshop with Naomi Melnyk.

We have two Cleaver Kids this year, and Ms. McMann made hanging card decorations with them. They get to be in all the other projects too – but they don’t have to make a project book or be in Public Communications.

We had a District Dance in Innisfree on January 17. We had over 65 kids come to the dance. It was a Duck Dynasty theme and we had prizes to give out for dances.

Mrs. Baker made sure everyone danced.

My Dad was the D.J. and everyone had lots of fun.

We are having our Public Speaking at the IOF Hall in Innisfree on Friday, February 20 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and watch. We are still looking for judges so if you would like to judge please call Debbie McMann at 780-592-2083.

It’s not too late to join us on Wednesday, February 4 for Winter Walk Day, a province-wide initiative to get Albertans up and moving during the winter months. Students will be gathering in the gym at 1 p.m. before the walk.

February brings Random Acts of Kindness Week from February 9 – 15. VIBE will be scheduling many activities for students to participate in to share a little kindness out and about our community.

This week, let’s check out how some of our classes are doing in their math classes.

Our KinderKids have completed learning how to print and recognize the numbers zero to ten. Now they are focussing on counting forwards and backwards from various starting points, comparing which numbers are more/less.

The Grade 5 class has been practicing their multiplication facts and the many strategies that are involved. The students have been doing awesome, keep on practicing those facts!

In Grade 6 math they are discovering the best deals, as they learn about percentages of numbers, to find out how much is 30 per cent off of an item... or is the better deal buying the more expensive item with 25 per cent off? Fractions, decimals and percents is the math unit! They have also been practicing problem solving with their unit called “What’s the Problem?” Actually, they are getting so good at these that they no longer have a problem!

The Grades 8 students have been focus-

ing on measurement this month. Students are learning to calculate surface area and volume of three-dimensional objects. In Math 9 they have been focusing on linear relations. Students have been learning how to write equations, make a table of values and drawing a graph from the information provided.

Miss Cusack’s Grade 5 class continues to keep trying to achieve their monthly reading goal to enter to win a chance to attend an Oil Kings game. In ELA, they are reading a book called Wonder. It is a very interesting story about a boy who doesn’t look like everyone else and it is allowing the students to see how this boy gets treated and his thoughts and feelings about his circumstance. They are all learning a valuable lesson reading it, and definitely getting a new outlook on how to treat people.

And let’s check on those Grade 2s again.

They are just about ready to receive their reward of an ice cream party for learning their basic adding facts. Many of the students know their one, two, and three facts and once they all get to five, they will share in some delicious ice cream.

A date to remember is the Elementary Report Cards on February 27.

Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted VES would like to welcome Miss Martin who will be with Mrs. Stachniuk in 3C every Tuesday doing her EDFX. We would also like to welcome back Mrs. Sevenhuysen who is in her final year at King’s University and will be with Mrs. McCullough in 2A until the end of March.

There was a great turn out at the J a n u a r y Pa r e n t Ad v i s o r y C o u n c i l Meeting. The Grade 4 teachers shared with parents the guided reading that is going on in their classrooms and how this is impacting student achievement and engagement. Trustees Huedepohl and King discussed the new education act, bussing and the proposed school calendar. Administration shared with parents the VES Mission Statement as staff has recently modified it to align closer with the BTPS Mission Statement. They also encouraged all Grade 4 parents to take the survey they will be receiving in the mail from Alberta Education.

who was our Pink Shirt Logo Design contest winner. She received a cheque from VIBE. Pink Shirt Day is coming up on February 25.

VIBE started Games Club in VES and it was a huge success. They had over 30 students join in. The VIBE advisory kids were excellent hosts. Their leadership skills really shone. They set up games, kept students engaged and made sure everyone was included.

January 29 marked the halfway point of our AR program. On that day, we celebrated Beach Day. Students and staff wore beach wear and listened to music from the Beach Boys and Under the Sea. We appreciate DJ Shannon Leonard, who played music for a dance that nearly every student got to attend.

January 30 was a professional learning day and Februar y 2 was a TES Team day for teachers. On January 30 Innisfree School’s teaching staff joined VES and we were fortunate to have Tom Hierck travel to Vermilion from the B.C. coast (Gibsons) to speak with us about his book “RTI Is a Verb”. Art Mixes Up In Mannville Brenda Walker, Librarian for Mannville Public Library Submitted

What was originally scheduled to be just once a month has turned into two art classes a month at the Mannville Public Library. There always seemed to be people in the community who express interest in art lessons so in an effort to accommodate them, the library is hosting Acrylics with Alvin and Florals with Katrina.

The acrylics classes, which there have been three of already, are scheduled for February 9 and March 14 while the Floral classes are going to be held on the last Saturday of the months for

Januar y, Februar y and March. The nice thing about these classes is you don’t have to come to ever yone of them if you don’t want to.

Cost of the acr ylics is $70 which includes the canvas, paints and brushes. The only thing you have to bring is a bag lunch and at the end of the day you get to take your finished painting home. The Floral with Katrina is $75 but includes the same supplies. Registration for the classes are required by phoning the library at 780-763-3611.

Hopefully the artists will be willing to show their work at the Art and Cultural Days in Mannville which is planned for Saturday, April 11.

They have been designing and creating sets and gathering costumes and props to perform their plays to the elementary students. This year the two plays were “101 Dalmatians” and “Eeyore Wants to be Popular”. Both groups did a fabulous job of presenting their plays to the kindergarten to Grade 6 students on Monday and Tuesday morning.

VIBE Day was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by the Grade 6-9 students at St. Jerome’s. The students attended VIBE Day on Wednesday, January 28 at J.R. Robson. The Grade 6 students had a variety of activities geared for their level.

They made balloon animals, steppingstones and magnets, as well as listened to speakers discuss friendships and selfesteem. The Grade 7-9 students were able to choose form a variety of activities and speakers to fill their day. There were

Congratulations to the Jr. High “B” boys and girls teams for their wins over Paradise Valley last week. Both of these teams are showing a tremendous amount of improvement and confidence as the season continues. The Jr. “A” boys and girls teams traveled to Elk Point on January 23 and 24.

As we start this new year we also reflect on 2014. Some have had challenges, sorrow, changes and we all seek a new beginning ,one of hope and healing , direction and a calm peace.

Let’s look for a moment at children’s lives and experiences and focus on their challenges, sorrows and changes.

Children, too, are faced with losses , changes and sorrow and they grieve.

Do we really as adults understand the impact of these experiences on children? Do we as adults really understand the impact of trauma and change on us as we endure losses and grieve?

Tr a u m a a f fe c t s a l l a n d h a s b e e n proven to effect even the unborn. The environment of stress, trauma, yelling and violence is felt even in the womb.

This can have an impact on mental development and ability to cope from the beginning.

Children ver y young may display ag i t at i o n, ag g r e s s i o n, i n a b i l i t y to concentrate. They may be fearful and isolate. Children feel sadness and the sadness of others but of ten do not know how to process their feelings and recognize when they are feeling emotions, where emotions are triggered in their body and even more important what to do with these feelings.

How do we as adults measure up to dealing with the recognition of our feelings of grief, the expression of this grief in our bodies and what to do with our emotions?

What can we as adults do to help children on their emotional journey through grief?

Recognize that when children are traumatized or face losses and changes in their lives they are affected both emotionally and mentally. They may experience, fears, rejection, loss of self esteem, abandonment, anger and helplessness. Unaddressed stress

Islay Mini Worlds Bonspiel was held on January 21-25 with a full slate of 16 teams.

All participating teams dressed to match the country they chose to play as. Many really outdid themselves with their costumes and

it was very entertaining. There were a lot of excellent games, a delicious banquet Saturday night and a lot of fun had by all.

Local 4H Member Selected For Oklahoma Youth Expo

One local 4H member will soon be on her way to the Oklahoma Youth Expo (OYE) after being named a recipient of the Summer Synergy Setting Sails program.

Seven Alber ta intermediate and senior 4H members applied for the Setting Sails program, of which Kaylie Krys and her sister Megan, were both applicants for.

Kaylie Krys is a member of the Vermilion 4H Sheep club as well as the Vermilion Beef club and was named as one of the three selected from the applicants to travel to Oklahoma on March 17 to observe and learn from the OYE’s agricultural show classes.

The objective of the OYE is to help exhibit the finest quality market and breeding livestock in the US that facilitates agricultural production projects, and to fund higher education opportunities for youth pursuing studies in agriculture. The three Albertan 4H members will attend and observe the different aspects of the event and gain valuable leadership information.

The Summer Synergy Setting Sails program is designed to showcase and reward the “profound experiences that reinforce their outstanding leadership, communication and agriculture advocacy.”

During the 2014 Summer Synergy event Kaylie Krys placed at the top of the Sheep Showmanship class. For the Sheep Trimming class, Krys also placed first with her sister Megan, placing a very respectable third place. For Kaylie’s efforts she was also awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

During the Marketing event, participants had to provide an item for the fundraiser auction and also provide supporting documents on marketing the item. Krys made a “We Support Alber ta 4H” sign made out of grain elevator wood acquired after the Vermilion Alberta Wheat Pool elevator was torn down. Krys provided the strategies she felt were important in the marketing aspect of her item, which later was bought for approximately $200.

Krys says she is looking forward to the trip, meeting new youth with similar interests and gaining experience in the agricultural industry.
