Colours Of The Ukraine Celebrated At Malanka The Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association held its New Year’s celebration, Malanka, at the Vermilion Regional Centre on January 17 which featured a traditional Ukrainian meal, silent auction fundraiser, door prizes and, of course, colourful performances by the members of the dance troop. Club president Jason Stelmaschuk said the club’s more than 35 years of success was mainly attributed to the close-knit Ukrainian community within Vermilion. Most Mature Farm Curl Team The team consisting of John Klutz, Ron Walker, Wayne Seward and Howard Row were among some of the curlers in the Farm Curl bonspiel held last weekend in Vermilion.

The annual Vermilion Chamber of Commerce Farm Curl has proven to be a huge success with 20 teams from local and abroad, participating in the half century old tournament.

The bonspiel got underway on Thursday afternoon with two teams matched up, followed by a 5 p.m. draw, filling the rink.

The Klutz team appeared to be the most experienced of all teams entered consisting of Ron Walker, curler of more than 60 years, Wayne Seward with 55 years of curling, John Klutz with 58 years of curling and Howard Row curl-

ing for 18 years. That brings the team’s total years of curling experience to more than 191 years. Klutz himself has participated in 47 of the 50 Farm Curls hosted by the Chamber.

Friday night was the Draw To The Button contest, sponsored by Western Financial Group, which saw a number of competitors come close to the centre of the curling house. In the end it was Vermilion’s Greg Lumley taking home the top prize, Dean Prill claiming second and Owen Hollen taking third.

The awards for the bonspiel were handed out on Saturday evening and was followed by a dance for the teams, families and friends of all involved.

Leslie was born in Islay, Alberta on July 8, 1933 to parents Durward and Margaret Bowman.

Les leaves to mourn his passing: his loving wife Dorothy, three children; Cheryl (Dareen) Larry, Harold (Lorie) Bowman and Brent (Jodi) Bowman, grandchildren; Johnathon, Steven, Bryce, Ryan, Brayden and Katie, and sister Carol (Barren) Graham as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Durward Bowman, infant sister Dorothy, and sister Willa Byrt.

The funeral sevice for Les was conducted from the Dewberry Community Hall on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Brian Stiles officiating.

The eulogy was given by Todd Robinson. Scripture was read by Kathy Lovell. Charlene Hendricks led the singing of the hymns: “To God be the Glory”, “Amazing Grace” and “Because He Lives” and also played “Amazing Grace” on the violin. The hymns were accompanied by Merideth Whiteside and Jean Bowman. David Callaway played the guitar and sang, “Knowing What I Know About Heaven”.

The video presentation was made by Lorna Garnier and Lisa Carter.

The Honorary Pallbearers were: Jimmy Armstrong, Lee Nelson, Bob Proud, Alvin Bowman, Barry Brown, Ted Etherignton, Eddie Trach and Charlie Saville.

The Active Pallbearers were: Warren Garnier, Maurice Garnier, Mike Chase, Sandy Robinson, Vern Davies and Terry Johnson.

The internment took place at the Dewberry Cemetery. McCaw Funeral Service of Lloydminster, Alberta administered the funeral arrangements.

In lieu of putting Les’ complete eulogy in this newpaper a donation has been given to the Cancer Cross Institute in his memory. Les’ eulogy and the video presentation can be seen on the McCaw funeral site.

A heartfelt thank you to all those who have made this hard time easier for us.

We have so appreciated the many prayers, visits, cards, phone calls and acts of kindness over the last year and in the days before and after the funeral. Thank you for the food brought to our homes and for the beautiful flowers and memorial donations made in Les’ memory and for your attendance at the funeral.

Thank you to all those who took part in the funeral service, to the honorary pallbearers and active pallbearers and to the Greenlawn Goodwill Club for the lovely lunch they served. A special thank you to Pastor Brian Stiles for his solid presence and loving support, and for his comforting message at Les’ funeral.

Lastly, thank you to Joel and Dave McCaw for their caring, compassionate service.

Kitscoty 4H Beef Club Joey Eddleston, On December 10 we had our ChristKitscoty 4H mas party and meeting. We went to the Beef Club Wennekamp’s and went skating on their Reporter outdoor rink. It was a really nice night for Submitted skating and then we had a potluck supper followed by a Chinese gift exchange.

For our winter activity we chartered a The Kitscoty 4H beef club has had a bus to take the club and family members busy start to our 4H year. We started with our weigh day on Nov 11, 2014 at Hiltz’s to Edmonton for a day of fun at the West farm with fifteen members weighing in Edmonton Mall Water Park. We then steers and heifer projects. We had a potluck gathered for supper at the Old Spaghetti supper after a cold afternoon at the Gauthi- Factory and then boarded the bus to go to er’s. Later that month we held our elections Rexall Place for an Oil Kings game. During at our monthly meeting. Our new president the second intermission the club members is Jessica Gauthier, vice president is Lucas were allowed to go down to the lower level Larson, secretary is Cheyenne Porter, trea- and high five the Oil Kings players on their surer is Shea-Lyn Eddleston, historian is way back out on to the ice for the third Justine Eddleston, sargeant at arms is Luke period. AHS Encourages TobaccoFree Environments AHS Submitted

National Non-Smoking Week Provides Opportunity To Increase Albertan Awareness National Non-Smoking Week begins January 18 and Alberta Health Services (AHS) is encouraging Albertans to keep their homes and vehicles smoke free.

Recognizing that the majority of Albertans do take action to prevent and reduce tobacco use, AHS’ National Non-Smoking Week (NNSW) efforts – which feature Albertans making smoke-free choices – serve to further normalize the choice to be tobacco free, starting with smoke-free homes and vehicles.

Seven thousand chemicals, including 69 known to cause cancer, are contained in tobacco smoke. Environments that are not smoke free expose people to these chemicals via second-hand smoke. Infants and young children are particularly at risk from the toxins in this smoke because their bodies are developing.

“While the majority of Albertans do choose smoke-free environments, unfortunately, the minority of Albertans who don’t choose to keep their environment smoke free remain at very real risk of consequences,” says Dr. Ifeoma Achebe, Central Zone Medical Officer of Health. “Secondhand smoke can cause serious respiratory infections, like bronchitis and pneumonia. It can also result in more frequent ear infections and increased respiratory symptoms like coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, which can make asthma attacks more severe.”

Infants and children are also very sensitive to third-hand smoke exposure, which builds up on surfaces in a home or vehicle, including furniture, clothing, drapes and carpets, where it can last for months.

“Infants and young children breathe near, crawl on, play on, touch, and even taste these surfaces, not knowing that they’re contaminated with third-hand smoke,” says Dr. Achebe. “Opening windows may get rid of the smell but it won’t remove the chemicals from the air or from surfaces.”

In addition to the health risks associated with second- and third-hand smoke exposure, there is also potential concern related to the vapour from e-cigarettes. While more research is needed into the safety of e-cigarettes, some research has already found toxins contained in the vapour produced by some e-cigarettes. These toxins can increase the risks of inflammation and constriction in the lungs and airways.

To support Albertans in creating – and maintaining – environments free from tobacco and the potential risks of e-cigarettes, AHS’ Tobacco Reduction Program has a number of resources available.

This includes decals that can be placed on windows in the home or in a vehicle to declare them as smoke-free spaces. The resources, including the smoke-free decals, are available from www.albertaquits.ca.

While we are enjoying the low prices at the pumps due to the cost of oil per barrel as it now sits under 47 dollars per barrel, we think we have somehow won the lot ter y, however the ripple effect is starting to become quite clear.

When you listen to the news and how Alberta Premier Jim Prentice says he disagrees with a new Conference Board of Canada repor t that says, Alberta faces the possibility of slipping into a recession this year because of the drop in oil prices. I have to admit I beg to differ on that.

Over the past week members of our community and surrounding areas have had their working hours reduced per month because the oil industry is slowing down due to the price of oil.

While out and about you can hear the stories of people getting laid off here and cutbacks being made there. You pick up a newspaper or turn on your

TV and it’s a constant message of how huge oil companies like Suncor has just laid off 1,000 workers, Mexico has laid off over 30,000 workers and the prediction of that number going much higher.

It is scary to know that just in our little town the effects of the oil prices are already being seen. Canadian and foreign workers who are being laid off are soon going to have some very difficult choices to make in the very near future.

So many of the foreign workers who come here with the hopes and dreams of making a better life for themselves and their families, spend the majority of their life savings and have not yet had the opportunity to save for times like this. Many of them come with nothing more than a suitcase and a dream, just like many of our forefathers did decades ago.

I have had the oppor tunity to get to know some of the foreign workers here in Vermilion and their work visas often restrict them to only being able to work for the company in which they are hired. They are unable to collect employment insurance benefits, as

they do not meet the eligibility criteria because they are deemed unavailable for work.

I could express an opinion about that all day and I know there are many people who would disagree with me and say they knew the risks before coming here and we as Canadians, have to look after our Canadian population first and foremost, but let’s have a look at that for just a minute.

I know for myself there have been many times I have over-spent and bought items I didn’t really need. I didn’t save for the proverbial “rainy day”.

If you are a Canadian citizen, born and raised, you can apply for Employment insurance and you will receive the benefits in which you have paid into, so that makes it a little less scary for you. Imagine being an immigrant worker who has recently moved here to Canada and now faces the dilemma of having no work, no money and no means to put a roof over your head, clothes on your back and food in your stomach. You don’t have the money to even go back to your home country. I would not want to be in that situation.

We h ave r e l i e d s o h e av i l y a n d have ridden the high oil price “gravy train” for so long, many of us have not prepared for the financial situation which many Vermilion families may be facing in the not so distant future. How are they going to be able to continue with the high cost of their mor tgages or the payments on the numerous items we tend to squander our money on boats, snowmobiles, travel trailers, etc. How is it going to affect our economy when who knows how many people will be coming home with their pink slip in hand? How many businesses in our area are going to be affected by people not being able to afford to go out and have supper, or go buy the extra clothes or the toys we all like to have? I would love to sit here in a bubble or put my head in the sand and pretend that our province is not headed into a recession like our government would like us to believe, but looking around and hearing the number of lay off’s happening around us, is just too much reality for me to sit here with my head in the sand.

Letter To The Editor I think we have a good health care system… at least compared to many.

However, the doctor shortage is long past ridiculous. You have a family doctor, they prescribe to medication you will need for the rest of your life; it is a lifelong condition. But then your family doctor dies or moves away.

Ever y other d o c tor in town is ‘not taking new patients”. No one will refill your prescription without an appointment. So you get to try to get a walk-in appointment, for an entire afternoon, and now you’ve missed work. The doctor at the walk-in clinic wants you

to have blood tests done, and refills your prescription. Who is going to look at those blood tests? Af ter all, the doctor who requisitioned them is not your doctor.

So at what point will a doctor say ‘no’ to refills? And who will see you to start the process over again?

I understand doctors are human. I understand they can only see so many people in a day. What I don’t understand is how they can turn away people who need health care. Waiting for an appointment with your family doctor is better than having NO doctor. What

M i d - J a n u a r y, already temperatures in the pluses as I write this, other than the occasional rain making road conditions a hazard. I will take it as I assume most will for January.

Even with a couple weeks of cold we at h er i c e c o n d i t i o n s ar e s t i l l a caution. In fact Cold Lake had open water just a couple weeks ago, so caution is indeed when on any ice. Ice fishing is great right now where one can safely venture and with this weather it will be perfect. I am going to try get out again this coming weekend, but I have to be careful. My caution won’t be thin ice, or I should say although thin ice is always a caution, my biggest caution now is my new little buddy Miss Pickles. She, like myself, is adventurous and may get in trouble.

Unmarked ice holes drilled by bigger ice augers can be a hazard for youngsters and I’m sure if you ice fished for long enough you have stepped into one of these terrors. An adult will not fit down normal ice auger drilled holes in the ice, but that sudden drop of one leg to your crotch in freezing cold water gets ones attention with eyes wide open very quickly.For those that ice fish remember when done fishing at a drilled hole to put a branch in the hole and mound it up with snow so that it is highly visible so everyone may NOT have to experience the ice cold water crotch Miss Pickles could fit in the bigger drilled holes but that isn’t a concern as she is growing and too fat to sink thru one of those holes. However, it’s the bigger open water holes I am concerned with. Many trout ponds and lakes have aerators in them.

Aerators pump air or oxygen into the water to aid the fish during the winter when ice is thick and snow is heavy, as plants don’t grow good which is the only source of oxygen in the water otherwise. Fish need dissolved oxygen in the water to survive and aerators provide this. Whether it’s a water fountain or air pumped, the aerators will leave open water where they operate. Hopefully most people are smart enough to stay well away from these areas but to an eight week old adventurous puppy, that area will eventually look like it needs checking out.

If a dog breaks thru thin ice surrounding the open water and enters the open water they almost can never crawl onto the ice again, and rescue operations involve boats, lifejackets, rope, etc along with knowledge by rescuers.

I could bring her inside the ice fishing hut or tent with me, where she could delightfully chew on my ankle and be content, but eventually she with have to use the little puppy’s room or the big outdoor washroom.

Which quickly leads to the immediate urge to explore everything in sight.

Now I don’t blame her and I am kinda that way myself, but I have had longer to learn by my mistakes.

Of course there is the alternative, as the wife suggested…leave her at home, to which I replied that she, then, would have to “puppy sit” every second she is awake when I was gone. I was then quickly reminded on how a puppy needs constant companionship from their master and should always be included in all outdoor adventures… just as I thought!

Now I am craving a fresh fish fry so there are alternative lakes with no open water or aerators, so it’s just a matter of careful planning to enjoy both fishing and Miss Pickles. Although I have a feeling there will be less ice fishing and more Miss Pickle’s time and attention, it all may be a lot of time and

My little smart phone suddenly gave up the ghost in the middle of a call, and I knew I had about the same chance of fixing it as a knight of the round table being able to tune up a half ton.

It just meant a trip to the “Lakeland Communication” store in Wainwright.

Once there, a nice young lady, probably in her twenties, promptly asked me as soon as I entered the room, “Can I help you?” I handed her my phone saying, “This little gadget quit on me and I’m lost without it”.

No hesitation whatsoever, she had the back off of it and started checking it out..

“Probably the sync card,” she announced and dug around in her desk drawer and found the replacement. She made a few tests and calls and said, “You’re go to go.” I told her I was amazed at her knowledge, a compliment she just shrugged off, “Nothing to it,” she noted. “Well,” I said. “I’m from a time when there weren’t even TVs yet so it something to me.”

Kids nowadays can’t know the fun we had in early times when real candle lights were first retired from lighting up our Christmas tree. Remember those first strings of tree lights, that wouldn’t work if even one bulb was faulty? Yes, and I can remember when the Christmas tree really was, or had been, a live tree, not a scentless imitation.

We take as common now so many things that we got along without in early times. I remember when our old Model A Ford had NO heater or any kind of windshield defroster. Think of winter driving like that. We got by with blankets and a foot warmer that had live coals from the stove.

It was fine going to town, but was cooled off by the time we started home. Ever hear of a frost shield? Yes, they were supposed to work, but mom heated little bags of salt to rub the windshield to absorb the frost so dad could see to drive.

Remember the frozen gas lines and methyl hydrate? You had to remember to add the alcohol yourself in earlier times.

Getting to town was an adventure you never took lightly. You could never imag-

A f t e r c o n s i d e rable hesitation and prejudicial self-talk, I once stood up in a room packed with strangers and read from a collection of poems and short fiction. I called it ‘Out of the Basement’. The decision to step up from the silent underground and speak aloud the words I’d written to expectant human beings (instead of Koko, my attentive literary cat) felt risky, but I did it any way. No one left, hurled spitballs, or heckled me out of the room. I did not perish from fear. On the contrary, taking that small risk opened up a dialogue with others interested in language, formulating story, and each person’s unique manner of expressing and interpreting ideas. Those valuable exchanges were my reward for gliding on the thin ice of self-consciousness that led to that lonesome podium. I learned plenty from those with knowledge much superior to mine. Worth it?

Every shallow breath, definitely.

Keeping ever ything to yourself is one option, one way to live. You can avoid controversy, conflict, confrontation. Criticism. Awareness beyond the length of your own nose. There’s no pressure to explain yourself if no one has even a hint of what views you hold and what those views are based upon, how you think, or even who you are, really. You can periodically offer up an angry, uninformed opinion to cover that you haven’t bothered to investigate the facts associated with any given subject. You can remain an ineffective bystander for a lifetime. Like a small burrowing animal, scratching out just enough dirt to maintain your own narrow tunnel of existence, you may disreg ard all mat ter s greater than the empty gossip found at the coffee shop. You may remain just out of range of detection by the My Voice Counts meter. But it does count. You count. We all do.

Just as a poem isn’t likely to change the world, neither is the single action of one small Canadian. Yet, a poem read at the right moment by an attentive reader might shift that reader’s view of a set of circumstances, the nature of a relationship, or an aspect of life in some significant way. And one small Canadian who speaks with a voice of sincerity and conviction, whose actions exemplify the common perception of what it means to live an honourable life, attracts the attention of those occupying the space around him or her. Yes, it’s forever the sensational that captures news headlines.

It’s the gangsta behaviour that most often thrills popcorn-chomping audiences attending a movie. Indeed, for some misguided souls, it’s the power enjoyed by the fictitiously ruthless and menacing that seems most at trac tive and desirable to emulate. In life outside of fantasyland, however, we’re ultimately accountable for our deeds.

We need to hone our ability to recognize the difference between titillation and truth, facade and reality.

Food allergies are on the rise throughout the developed world. I have noticed that 50 per cent of the people at my work place have many specific food allergies.

Their ages range from 22 all the way to fifty something. In the 1960s and 70s it was rare to hear about someone who had a food allergy. Today food allergies are common place. Specialty stores have popped up, out of necessity to provide eatable food options. Even many of the main stream grocery stores now cater to this increasing difficult dietary problem. New food offerings are now gluten free, yeast free, diary free and soy free speciality foods.

Food allergies appear to be increasing exponentially in children, with a 50 per cent increase from 1997 to 2007.

The most common foods to cause 90 per cent of allergic reactions are wheat, milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, yeast, fish and shell fish. Food allergies are not limited to the previous list, but can include vegetables such as green beans and tomatoes fruits such as strawberries and raspberries. We have been told that foods such as whole grains, milk, cheese, fruits and vegetable are healthy, yet this is not true for everyone. When it comes to food allergies, one man’s medicine can be another man’s poison, and that poison can take the form of a “healthy food” and for some

it can be deadly. Reactions range from hives to bearable pain to anaphylactic shock causing death. Reactions can also appear as a low grade inflammation that feels like all over achiness, a constant running nose or eyes, a cough, pain in the bottom of the feet, deep bone pain, a painful inability to go up stairs, joint pain, dizziness, waking up exhausted after a full night of sleep, weight gain and many more discomforts.

Many people that have food allergies are not just allergic to one food but to many foods. One of the ladies I work with, who has multiple food allergies, says she just feels like crying, she feels so hungry, yet she feels there are few satisfying food choices left for her. Man cannot easily live on salad alone, no matter how healthy it is. One of my friends began losing her ability to walk, was in constant pain and was experiencing declining health. The cause of the sudden onset was unknown, and after appointments with many medical specialists, it was determined that she was allergic to tomatoes. With tomatoes out of her diet, her health quickly returned.

It appears to be unclear as to what is causing this rise in food allergies, and why there can be a sudden onset of an allergic reaction to a food that was previously eaten with no problems what so ever. Some scientists and doctors feel that the gluten, saponins and protease inhibitors in our modern genetically modified wheat is causing gut permeability.

Others say the pasteurization of milk deactivates the enzyme that is needed

to digest the milk. Without this enzyme, undigested milk can become an allergen because it is inherently designed to transport via permeability into the blood stream. Meet the new face of the Village of Mannville, CAO James Mason. Originally from Nova Scotia, Mason moved out west at the age of 14 and completed his studies and worked his way through life, gaining skills and training, which he says, will help him in his role as Village of Mannville CAO. Mason and his family moved to Mannville this past September from Mayerthorpe, Alberta where he served on Council for three years, learning the other side of the table. The former forestry-business owner sold his company a few years previous and took up the small town politician position.

All the while working to complete his Level 1 and 2 National Advanced Certificate in Local Authority Administration through the University of Alberta and his goal to become an official CAO. Mason says his knowledge of heavy equipment may serve as an asset in his position as he says he understands the machines and mechanics needed when working on certain projects required in a village and is eager to put them to practice.

High School students are reviewing and preparing for final exams. A full exam schedule can be found on the St. Jerome’s website, www. stjschool.org. The Grade 12 students were done classes last Thursday and the Grade 10 and 11 students are done this Wednesday. Diploma Exams and Final Exams started on Wednesday, January 14 and will be completed by Thursday, January 29. There is no school for all students on Friday, January 30 and Monday, February 2. The second semester begins on Tuesday, February 3.

Grade 5, 6, and 7 students have the wonderful opportunity of attending the Men’s Provincial Curling Championships in Wainwright on Wednesday, February 4th. On Thursday, February 5, Grade 5 and 6 students will be going skiing at Kinnisoo Ridge at Cold Lake.

Grade 5 students have been studying Chemistry in science and have been doing many cool experiments over the past several weeks. They have made soft crystals, slime, dough, pancakes, and have seen how vinegar and alka-sletzer tablets react with one another. They also had to create an apparatus to slowly mix vinegar and baking soda.

After loosing to the Cavillers in our home tournament, the team knew they would have their work cut out for them. She will be playing in tournaments throughout Saskatchewan, going to Saskatchewan Provincials, as well as playing in Nationals in Calgary, in April. What a fantastic result to trying!

The boys’ basketball team, consisting of Keagan Rewuski, Vincent Guan, S teve n M a n c h e n, Ty l er M a n c h e n, Remington Oneschuk, Donovan Brooker and Kyle Kjenner have begun another building year. Although they face the challenges of a small team they will certainly have ample opportunity to gain experience and improve their skills for next year’s senior team.

We know they are in good hands with coach, Darci McMillan.

Paige Greig, along with the Marwayne Wildcats, kept up a positive attitude in their quest for a medal in the recent basketball tournament at Redwater. They played three tough games, won two, against New Serepta and Elk Point and brought home the silver medal in the final game against Devon. Fabulous work girls, we see that your heart is in basketball!

Outdoor Education instructor, Kurt McLean, gave the junior high students a unique opportunity this past week, building lean-tos. While some chose to dig into the snow and create forts, others used branches and tarps to construct their wilderness abodes.

One group of fearless trekkers, Kyle Kjenner, Brandon Pankiw and Kaiden Brett, took on an exceptional challenge, or should we say dare. They put their knowledge and courage to the test and spent the night eating and sleeping in their shelter. Two of the three endured the sub-zero temperatures, smoke filled lean-to and wet sleeping bags to make it through until 8 a.m. the next day! Now, isn’t that survival of the fittest at its best?

Senior Curling League Is Open To All Ages Senior’s Curling Submitted

This curling season the Senior’s League includes casual curlers of all ages, those who would like to curl, but cannot commit to a particular team or league on a regular basis.

S e n i o r ’s a n d casual curling is every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 p.m.

Those who show up each day pick a card from a box to determine teammates, and the sheet of ice in which to curl. Teammates then decide who plays which position.

Although most participants are seniors, we

The annual fees include funspiels at Christmas and wind-up but you can also pay on a per game basis. The Senior’s Curling Club’s mission is to provide a little exercise, a lot of fun and great socializing.

Mannville School’s Cooking Club will start on January 29 and will run on Thursdays for eight weeks. It is open to students in Grade Four to Six. Students will learn about healthy food choices, safety in the kitchen, and basic preparation of snacks and meals.

Mrs. Campbell is looking forward to working with another group of enthusiastic cooks this year!

Mrs. Lorenson, our Vibe Coach, has been working with the Grade Four students on the Friends for Life Program. Students worked on an activity where they had to work together to build a structure using marshmallows, toothpicks and straws.

They soon understood why it is important to work together and support each other.

The kinderkids are enjoying three days a week as now they attend on all Fridays!

The theme this month is Winter and they are enjoying listening to winter adventures, creating snowmen and snowflakes, and serving up pretend hot cocoa, apple cider and tea.

The Grade Ones have started their unit in Science on their five senses.

Wonder how that Grade Two class is doing with getting their ‘paper scoop of ice cream’? Is there an ice cream party planned yet?

The Grade Three class has been hard at work since our Christmas break. They are currently finishing up their unit on Hearing and Sound in science. They are creating their own musical instruments to demonstrate their knowledge of what they have learned.

Our Grade Four students have been busy writing and learning about New Year’s Resolutions. Goals ranged from getting better at hockey, working on saving money to working on going to sleep quickly instead of staying up late.

Grade Fives continue to build circuits and learn about electricity in science. Soon they will be creating mechanisms that use electricity. They will be making switches, a flashlight, a model house, a lunchbox alarm, and a fan.

To go along with their Sky Science unit, the Grade Six class started a very interesting reading unit called Space, Stars and Quasars. They have loads of questions to ask because learning about space is so interesting. The students are working on presentations of the planets, and nightly they observe the moon and its many phases.

We welcome Mrs. Eli Myhovich who will

be instructing the Babysitter›s Course to our Grade Six class. This program includes first aid, behaviour management, child development and other important information for the future babysitters to have.

Dr. Seuss is on the Loose with our Accelerated Reading Program. Our goal is to reach 3,333 quizzes. So far the elementary students have reached 2103. Unfortunately we did not do so well last month. We need encouragement to read many, many more books so that Mr. Church and Mr. Myhovich might dye their hair pink! Parents are asked

Vermilion-Native Alison Jackson Signs As A Professional Cyclist

by Sho-Air released its 2015 roster, which included Vermilion-born Alison Jackson, a first-year pro. The triathlete, who was the age group sprint world champion in 2014, took a bit more time to ride her bike last year. Jackson grew up in Vermilion, moved to Abbotsford, BC in 2007 to pursue a university degree, but returns to Vermilion every summer with her husband Alex Jackson to work on the family farm.

“When I was a triathlete, I got involved with a local bike team, Phoenix Velo in Mission, BC,” Jackson said. “All the guys kept trying to convert me to cycling, so I would enter cycling races here and there.

Even though I never trained for them, I did quite well. Last summer, I decided to ride my bike a little bit more and see how I would compare with the pros at BC Superweek,” (an event that hosts 9 races in 10 days). Jackson raked up top-15 finishes at

Superweek racing for Glotman-Simpson, which included second at the MK Delta Criterium of the Tour de Delta, ninth at the UCI White Rock race (her first International Cycling race), and first overall in the White Rock omnium (a collection of three races).

“No one knew who I was but since I had consistent results, everyone knew it wasn’t just ‘beginners luck’. It was local friends of mine and other connections that got me hooked up with Twenty16 presented

by Sho-Air. I am diving 100 per cent into cycling this year to see what will happen when I actually train for cycling and only cycling.”

While Jackson is committed to the bike and her team, she doesn’t know yet what her role will be on TWENTY16. She’ll learn more when she flies to California for the team’s training camp the first week of February. Still, she does have her own goals for the year. “A big goal of mine is to learn as much as I can. The ladies I get to work with have so much experience that I need to soak up! I am going to race Cana-

dian nationals this year (for the first time) and I want to get into the top five. Also, I am going to work hard to get on a Canadian national team project to do a tour in Europe somewhere.”

Jackson is the only Canadian on the team. The rest of her teammates hail from the United States. Other team members include several US National cycling champions and Cycling World champions.

The unique culture of the team supports a junior female team, an education-focus for athletes to pursue university, and the flexibility for athletes to stay focused on national team projects that will take them to the Olympics.

Former student April Warrilow, keeps herself busy at the Lakeland College barns as she is a Lab Tech which helps the instructors at the College set up hands-on learning labs for the students’ classes. She also keeps busy with the many chores related to the animals at the College.

Here she takes a break from cleaning the goat’s stall at the riding arena, to feed them some treats.

Warrilow says during the recent cold weather, the goats had to be brought inside to ensure their safety and comfort.

Formed in St. Albert in 2003, this group of Alberta musicians has rapidly elevated itself to a prominent place in the Canadian music scene. Their musical aptitude has seen Tupelo Honey be called to play with, or open for, some of the biggest names in rock music today, including Bon Jovi, Creed, Three Days Grace, Sam Roberts, the Trews and Wide Mouth Mason. On their own merit they were the winners of the 2005 National Band Slam, as well as winners of awards for Rock album of the year and Album of the year in the 2012 Edmonton Music Awards. Tupelo Honey will bring an acoustic version of their show to Vermilion’s Alumni Hall Theatre. With the varied influences of the band’s members – from world music to Indie rock or punk, from jazz to folk – it promises to be an extremely entertaining evening.

Hay Clandonald Sam Rothwell Submitted

On January 16, 2015, the Clandonald hall opened its doors for the return of the annual ‘Hay Clandonald’ festivities.

With the success of previous Hay Clandonald evenings, there was an enormous build up of excitement for this past Friday’s events; and attendees weren’t disappointed. Doors opened at 5 p.m. for the crowd to make their way inside.

Dinner started at 5:30, and the hungry crowd was in for a huge treat. Heaping plates of beef, baked potatoes, vegetables, Caesar salad, and rolls filled the empty bellies of all lucky enough to be in attendance. If anyone was fortunate enough to have any space left over, they had their choice of some delicious cake for dessert. With coffee, juice and water available to wash down the delicious food, everyone was ecstatic with the great meal.

A great moment during the evening was when the Clandonald Agricultural Society received an extremely generous cheque for just over $21,000 dollars.

Once 7:30 rolled around, the night transitioned to its information section.

We were enlightened on the important topic of ecological sustainability, and how important it is that rural communities (and farmers specifically) focus on looking beyond simple sustainability. If we are to do the bare minimum of ‘not destroying’ the land, we aren’t fulfilling our obligations of soil/farmland sustainability. We need to transition our practices to leaving the land better than before we started affecting it. This may seem impossible, but we learned some great techniques to help us do so.

We can focus on proper irrigation and

grazing techniques, as well as allowing soil to properly rejuvenate after each farming season. In addition to employing techniques we may already know, we have an obligation to embrace new knowledge and change, when it’s properly informed.

After the sustainability presentation finished wrapping up, the audience was treated to a live auction with items donated specifically for the event.

Auctioneer and aspiring comedian Edward McCormack gave the crowd a great show. His excellent auctioneering skills worked great with his sense of humor to entertain the audience, while giving them the opportunity to bid on some awesome items. One of the highlights of the night was the build up to the 50/50 draw. Having been an important part of Hay Clandonald for years, this year’s draw was all it was expected to be; and then some. This year’s winner pulled in a little over $500; a milestone never before reached.

Now, with a full belly and enlightened mind, the night was able to move to the entertainment section. This began at 9 p.m. with the introduction of Herb Dixon, comedian and sound effects wizard. Mr. Dixon has wowed crowds all over with his hilarious observational humor, which he’s able to elevate with outstanding sound effects. Herb’s ability to personalize his humor, involve the crowd, and address a wide range of topics, audience members of all ages were treated to a hilarious show. The hilarity lasted for nearly an hour and a half, wrapping up around 10:30.

With the end of the show, most attendees made their way to their vehicles to call it a night.

There is no question that this year’s Hay Clandonald was a huge success.

Vermilion Rock Hockey Game The Vermilion Rock hockey team faced-off against the Dewberry Mustangs in a Friday night match which saw hard hits and the Mustangs’ players spend numerous minutes in the penalty box. Nonetheless, the Rock came up short and faced a 6 to 5 loss. The Saturday night game saw the Rock dominate the Marwayne Comets with the Rock’s Lyndon Pulyk scoring two goals and one assist, taking the hometown team to a 5 to 1 win over the Comets.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted AR assemblies have moved from Wednesdays to Tuesdays for the rest of the school year. Please join us on January 20 at 10:45 for the first assembly of 2015.

The student drama production of “Pete the Pint-sized Pirate” was rescheduled (due to poor weather conditions) from before Christmas to January 9 and 10.

The students went a month without practicing and then had two practices the week before the presentations. They did a marvelous job, as did their directors Mrs. Doherty, Mrs. Myshaniuk, and Ms. Ishaq.

We appreciate Pam Young for catering an awesome meal and desserts, and those individuals who donated items for and bought items from the silent auction. The proceeds of the play and silent auction items will go toward helping with the costs of field trips.

We have Farm Safety coming to VES on January 19, 20 and 21. Through seven distinct “Safety Smarts” presentations, rural children from kindergarten through Grade 6 will be taught to recognize and react safely to a wide variety of potential farm hazards. Age appropriate, handson, interactive farm safety messages are taught to individual classes; with each grade’s presentation having a unique focus. Kindergarten – One seat, one rider; Grade 1 – To stay safe, play safe; Grade 2 – Boats float, I don’t; Grade 3 – Hear, hear, listen up; Grade 4 – It can happen to me; Grade 5 – Get a grip, safety’s in my hands; Grade 6 – Bigger, faster, but I’m smarter.

On February 6, VES will proudly host our sixteenth annual science fair. The fair is open to entries from interested VES students in Grades 1 through 6. Members of the public are welcome to attend, view the projects, and visit with our young scien-

tists from 12 – 2 p.m. There are two kinds of projects: research projects present information about a science topic and experiments discover the answer to a science question. Last year we had over thirty entries, most of which were deemed excellent by our judges. Our judges have always been interested members of the community, who have enjoyed the keen scientific minds of the students involved. Hope to see you out.

Music Festival Holds Registration

Vermilion and District Music Festival Association was at the Lakeland Mall on January 15 and 17 to hold registration for its music festival which is March 23 to 27 with the final concert being held on March 29 at 4 p.m. at the Parkview Alliance church. The performances will include piano, choirs and voice, strings and speech art. Denise Earle vice president of Vermilion and District Music Festival, said it gives local children and young adults from the age of 14 to 18 the opportunity to perform and have their performance critiqued by professional adjudicators Larry Schrum for strings, Diane Wiens for piano and Elaine Dunbar for voice and speech. The registration went well with approximately 95 participants for this years’ festival.
