Junction Sixteen 41 Phase One - Nearly Sold Out
After a few short years of planning, the Phase One of the new Junction Sixteen 41 subdivision is nearly sold out. With the construction of the Pomeroy Hotel well underway, Town of Vermilion Mayor Bruce MacDuff said a second hotel deal is nearing completion. That is not the end to the new businesses coming to the subdivision. The new area will see three new fast food businesses occupy a smaller, outdoor-style strip mall as well as a car-truck wash on another lot. The final lots of Phase One have deals pending, completing the sales for the Junction Sixteen 41 subdivision first phase. Photo Karen Nedzielski.

Marwayne Fire Department Receives New Rescue Truck
Marwayne Fire Departments fleet of trucks has recently seen an upgrade as the new Rescue truck has finally arrived. This past Wednesday, January 7, the old rescue truck had officially been retired as the new one arrived from Winnipeg, giving the department a much more reliable vehicle to respond to calls when needed. A $50,000 donation from UFA’s Get ‘N Give contest, took place last April. The money was awarded as a result of a video submitted to the contest expressing the need of a new rescue vehicle to their fleet. The remainder of the $186,000 price tag on the truck came from various fundraising efforts and donations including $75,000 from the County. The Marwayne Fire Department responds to an average of 66 calls per year. The presentation was followed by an extrication training day for the members of the department. Photos Karen Nedzielski.

She was then moved into the integrated Domestic Violence Unit, which she says can be a very difficult unit to work in. Although she says she had a great unit to work in, “After a few years (of the unit) it is time for a change. You tend to deal with a lot of negative stuff.” After approximately five years Sgt. Boehr was transferred out to the Kananaskis area to ser ve as Corporal for the detachment which she says may have been one of her favourite areas to work in. After spending three years in the detachment she was promoted to Sergeant for Vermilion, bringing her closer to her home province and allowing her to spend more time with her family. Sgt. B oehr says she enjoys the outdoors activities including snow shoeing and hiking and looks forward to checking out all that the Vermilion area has to offer. When asked what special aspects she hopes to bring to the detachment, Sergeant Boehr says with being female, it sometimes changes the perspective on how “we” look at things. She hopes to help in possibly taking a different approach to problem solving. She also wants to make herself more approachable in the public and has spent some of her time in Vermilion out in the public making her more accessible on a general basis. Sgt. Boehr says she would like to get the community involved with what they think the police priorities are, which may be through a community survey or other such avenues. Making the Officers more approachable in the public is a goal Sgt. Boehr wants to see realized. She says getting them out in the public is important in their role as protectors of the Vermilion

With this week being Minor Hockey Week it’s only fitting to acknowledge all the hard work and dedication both guys and girls put into their sport. The many hours of practice and travelling all over their zones to play hockey can be a very daunting task in itself but the children who play really don’t seem to mind all the work it takes. Which leads me to my thought about all the other sports and activities available to children and the benefits of having your child participate in extracurricular activities. With activities like hockey, volleyball, basketball, football, dance, figure skating and gymnastics there are plenty of ways to stay active and the list can just keep on going if that is the type of activity you are looking for. Of course every child and teenager has different likes and dislikes and maybe they are not the active type but they still want to participate in something outside of school and just have the opportunity to socialize. If that’s the case you can look at activities like drama, band, girl guides, brownies, piano, voice etc. No one can ever say there is nothing for your child to do.
When we think of involving our children in extracurricular activities we often find ourselves sitting with a pen and paper and wondering if there is any way we can afford to have them involved. It’s a big decision and the cost can be enormous but the benefits of having your child participate is sometimes more beneficial than anyone can imagine. A child with low self esteem for example, can flourish into a child with endless self confidence when given the opportunity to blossom and grow. It can give your child the opportunity to learn responsibility and time management skills which they will later need in life. It can help protect your child from being involved in the outside risky behaviors that many of our young children face every day, if given a productive activity, one which makes them feel they are accomplishing something can help keep teenagers away from drug and alcohol abuse. It can help your child learn to become more independent and strong, giving them the much needed social skills to succeed. The benefits are endless to keeping a child or children entertained in productive events in their life instead of destructive events. As a parent I can completely understand the stresses of trying to get your children involved in an outside activity and the finan-
cial strain it can place on a family unit, but there are ways of doing extracurricular activities without all the expense. As a child, I wished I could be in some kind of activity but in my case it was not something we could look at with the financial situation of being in a single parent home. Now don’t get me wrong, my Mom would of bent over backwards to put me in anything I had asked to participate in. I can remember sitting and thinking what it would be like to be in Brownies or Girl Guides, but it was just that, a thought. In the long run though, as children, we invented plenty of ways to keep ourselves active and occupied so that we didn’t get into much trouble. We would go outside and play neighborhood tag or searching for night worms so we could go to the numerous ponds for trout fishing. We would go to the swimming place and spend countless hours swimming with

all our friends, bike riding and baseball in an empty parking lot. You name it we did it in the summer. During the winter months we did become a little less active, however we did spend many days out tobogganing, having snowball fights, building snowmen and ice skating on a frozen pond. No one would ever have the time or opportunity to say they were bored like you hear so many times a day from children all around. As you can see, extracurricular activities doesn’t have to break the bank, the key is to get involved in our children’s lives. As parents we often look at the dollar figure and think “I can’t afford this or that”. Lace up a pair of skates, grab the baseball and bat, or fishing pole and just encourage our children to chose the productive side or life instead of the destructive side of life, it’s pretty simple.

Happy New Year Folks and I hope you and yours had a safe, happy and enjoyable holiday season. All things considered, it was a great one for myself even thou I battled the end of that flu. The weather was great unlike the deepfreeze we are experiencing right now, but that is a given as winter solstice, or the first day of winter, was on December 21 2014. The first day of winter is also the shortest day of the year regarding daylight. With all that darkness it will be cold guaranteed, however it takes a couple of weeks to feel that effect. Christmas Eve and day were very mild and enjoyable and the darkness chill took a while to catch up with us. It is winter and it will be cold but the up side is, we are now on the down swing towards longer sunlit days. Santa was pretty good to me this year and I got all I wanted/needed plus much more. My darling wife Roxanne, got me a couple of gifts that really surprised me. First was a metal detector something I have wanted all my life. Not only will it find precious metals, but it works extremely great with finding arrows. It’s going to be a huge asset and time saver on the outdoor range and now you know I will be treasure hunting. It picks up gold very well as I even tried gold dust that I had panned last year and it actually picks that up also. One can even tune out aluminum pull tabs or bottle caps so it ignores them. One thing that has me baffled is I have a little container of meteorite dust and chips from the Buzzard Coulee Meteorite that fell in Saskatchewan just on the other side of Alberta border. The dust and chips are from the biggest piece of meteorite shortly after it fell to earth in 2008 found by a Wainwright resident and the dust and chips are from cutting of the meteorite. A magnet will attach strongly and quickly to the meteorite container, so I thought the metal detector would pick up the meteorite, but it doesn’t recognize it. So I have a little research to do and another outdoor activity and adventures to pursue. I can’t wait for spring, my second gift is huge in so many ways. Introducing “Miss Pickles” only six weeks old and a terror...she is a puppy. Already huge and super smart and at six weeks old, already fills up a door matt when laying on it! An awesome cross bred, Alaskan Husky. I used to raise the Alaskan Malamute /wolf cross for dog sledding so I love the breed. Then add Giant Saint Bernard for size and temperament, and the last third, Great Pyrenees - the huge Coyote destroyer! Another asset on the Rural homestead. So will I not only have a new best friend, I will have a sled/pack dog that will drag trees out of the bush for firewood, an antler shed detector, a guard dog that will chase away and knock down coyotes, pull a sled, all while carrying a rescue jug of spirits...ha ha. She is just so dang cute with hook eyes markings, almost identical to the biggest female Alaskan Malamute we once had and of the hundreds of pups I have raised, she is one of the most easy going and intelligent pups I have ever seen.
Around The Campfire She, now at seven weeks, asks to go potty outside when she is in destroying the house, she will “sit” on command, so intelligent and I haven’t even tried to train her yet as she is so young. She also already has me “ twitterpated” and we are quite attached to each other already, she even helps me with firewood, well ok she drags behind the tree I am dragging out as she chews on the tree growling with ferocity. I am not sure if the wife didn’t like the coyotes stealing kittens right off the patio or if it’s kind of a lonely feeling with no guard dog on the homestead, or if she just fell in love with its picture, but I am really happy to have “Miss Pickles”. She fills that empty void when we had to find a good home for our last dogs because they were not a cold weather breed and liked to wander far from home. She will play outdoors in minus 35 degree Celsius wind
chill with no notice to the cold. As far as teaching her to stay close to home that will be one of the first lessons when she is old enough. Females tend to stay closer to home and I would like to see her bred and have a litter next year than have her fixed or spayed, which also helps. “Miss Pickles” will likely be the last dog I ever raise from a newborn pup, as its exhausting trying to keep up with her. I’m sure they demand more attention than our own children. The only downside is she already eats more than a horse and her genetics demand she be on the huge side when she grows up, but that is just fine. I don’t mind sharing and I need to lose a couple pounds. when the smoke Clears There is no better therapist than a puppy licking your face!

In the history of this country’s being opened up to settlers, many stories were told of how people left behind their old lifestyles and headed out across this big country to start a new life. Many folks couldn’t seem to adjust to the isolation and loneliness that the wide open spaces entailed and also the losses that occurred when trying to make a living from the land, good years and the bad. All of us who farmed can relate to times of loss when drought or frost or hail storms took away our bounty and left us with the loss of livelihood. Happened all the time. If a settler lost the family’s source of milk because the milk cow happened to die or if a skunk or a weasel cleaned house and you lost your egg layers and on and on. The degree of loss depended on how well off you might have been to enable you to still
carry on. Losing a cow isn’t too serious if you have a nice herd, but could be a calamity if it was your only one, for instance. I remember years when it was such a struggle to feed our stock if the crops failed for any reason, the loss was a matter of survival or not, really. I think of a time when neighbours had a visit from horses that got into their only field and ravaged their small field of crop they’d just broken to start and had to try to salvage what they could to get by. Luckily, neighbours helped them through it and they did survive. Luckily pioneers did help one another and wonderful friendships developed through the years. I guess I’m trying to say material things are tough to lose and life can be made difficult as a result. Yes, businesses can fail and lives forever changed with those kinds of losses, but I’m beginning to think the losses that are hardest to cope with are when you lose a friend, help mate or family member, whoever that could be, a sibling or child. like to have our family and dearest friends near, we more keenly feel the loss of their company at all the family and community gatherings. Seems the older we get, the more of our friends and family are among the missing. Loss comes to those who have something to lose, but we are chosen to have it in the first place. Remember the saying, “It’s better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.” Yes, I did have a wonderful ranch in such a beautiful part of the country, and I grieve

for it daily, but it was not meant to be that I keep it. I feel so wonderful that it was ever mine! As it says “we come into the world with nothing, and we’ll leave the same.” I had really wonderful parents and have such incredible memories of them in my childhood. Then, too, I lost my brother and a beautiful daughter, after a failed marriage and all those losses add up to a lot of sadness, but in that time I also raised a fine family that have brought such joy to my life.

for reasons as diverse as their personalities, ages, and shapes. They are recovering from illness and wish to regain some of their former strength. They observed their own profile and felt displeased. They are narcissists in awe of their physical appearance. They are athletes in training. They are addicted to the benefits of physical fitness. They heard a rumour that if you don’t use it, you will inevitably lose it. Some discover that they’re slowly starting to resemble a potato. (No names mentioned.) They come and go for a variety of reasons, and every one of them is relevant. It was one day recently while pedalling nowhere swiftly to the sounds of Arcade Fire and staring out the window at a frozen landscape that I noted the vast number of songs on my iPod. There are the familiar that I listen to on repeat often. I know what to expect from them. But just as often, I listen to whatever cues up in shuffle mode. Over time, I’ve been observing which tunes motivate me to move in certain ways, which ones increase my effort, which affect my breathing rhythm, and which encourage me to forget everything except my awareness of the present moment and my own existence in it. That last thing can be useful. Sometimes it’s the experience of wholly hearing a song that assists us in understanding ourselves and our world slightly better. Listening at the right moment to a meaningful lyric can carry us from a state of distress to one of being grounded again. Not every song on my playlist cues up because of my personal affinity-or even recognition-of a particular sound. It’s one of the side benefits of having shared a digital music account with teenagers. Listening, for me, is an entry into a world where nothing but the music exists. In order to experience full effect, there must be no seepage from the outside world. None. If a decibel level beyond the recommended is what it takes, then brand me a risk taker. Or a fool. Some vices must remain if we’re to continue as mere mortals in this life. A similar suspension of the reasonable limits of reality occurs when I’m immersed in the conjured world of a good book. You could call it escapism and not be completely inaccurate. Please don’t talk to me when I’m listening to music or reading. Or attending a play, listening to the radio, or viewing a film either, for that matter. For maximum effect of the art form to unfold, it’s better to temporarily disengage from all distraction, to enter the world that’s been created and surrender to the possibilities presented within it. It’s that temporary suspension that rejuvenates, informs, and inspires. There’s a certain clarity that emerges when we allow ourselves the space to experience something More than a job. Think career. Very cold days call for hot and savory homemade soups. Potato soup was a soup my mom frequently made during the winter. It is an inexpensive soup to make, yet it has the delicious creaminess of mashed potatoes, and what’s not to love about fried onions and bacon. Potato soup is a filling and hearty comfort food. This soup uses a roux (pronounced roo) to provide a thick and creamy texture. The use of a roux in soups and cream sauces originated 300 years ago in French cooking. Potatoes have been cultivated for thousands of years in Peru, and valued for their healing properties. The first potatoes in Canada came to Prince Edward Island in 1758. Potatoes are a good source of many
healthful nutrients, including fiber. They are a natural source of lipoic acid, vitamin C and vitamin B6. Lipoic acid, vitamin C and vitamin B6 are necessary fuel (co-factors) for a multitude of enzymatic reactions that are needed in the body. Recent research by scientists in the UK has found a substance called kukoamines in potatoes. Kukoamines and lipoic acid are natural blood pressure lowering compounds. Potatoes also contain vitamin B3, B5, potassium and manganese. Onions contain quercetin which is a potent anti-oxidant. The quercetin in onions does not degrade with heat in soups; it is only transferred into the broth. Onions are also a good source of chromium which is useful for a healthy blood sugar balance. Interesting poutine, which is fried potatoes topped with gravy and cheese is a Canadian invention, so feel free to add some grated cheese on top of your potato soup, eh.
Bacon and Onion Potato soup 4 red potatoes 5 slices of bacon 1 yellow onion chopped 1 grated carrot 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons all purpose flour 1 tablespoon butter 1 half cup cream 4 cups milk 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon dill (optional) Peel, cut and boil potatoes until cooked. Fry the bacon until crisp. Cut into small pieces. Sauté the onion and grated carrot in the bacon fat. When the onions have softened and are beginning to slightly brown, remove them into a bowl. If the bottom of the the same frying pan has no browning, continue to make the roux. If there is browning, then wash the pan before beginning the roux. To make

the roux melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the bottom of the frying pan, then add the 2 tablespoons of flour. Cook for one minute stirring, add the milk one half cup at a time and cook, stirring the milk in and continue stirring until the milk is combined and the mixture has thickened. Do this until 2 cups of the milk have been added in. When the potatoes are cooked, drain away the water and remove half of the potatoes and leave the other half in the pot. Mash the potatoes in the pot with cream and the 1 tablespoons butter. In the pot with the mashed potatoes add the reaming 2 cups of milk, the carrot and onion mixture, the bacon, the salt and pepper and stir over heat. Cut the remaining potatoes into half inch cubes and add to the soup. Add the dill if desired and serve. You can try poutine potato soup by adding some grated cheese on top of each bowl.
Local Protective Services May Find New Central Location Karen Nedzielski Reporter
Protective Services may soon have a new central location. Members of Town Council along with administration met on Tuesday, January 6 to discuss the option of the purchase and renovation of Lot 1A, Block 21, Plan 1221205 and Lot 6&7, Block 21, Plan 6647S, what is now the Webb’s Ford lot located along Railway Avenue and 50 Street. The idea is to have one central location for various protective services like Ambulance, Law Enforcement and Fire services. Most all councillors agreed that the concept, in most aspects, would be beneficial to the Town and surrounding area, however, it would mean a $1,350,000 debenture to purchase the property.
The possibilit y of environmental concerns had a number of Councillors hesitant to immediately jump on the idea and much discussion took place before a motion, for or against, the possible purchase could take place. The concern results from a preliminary test done next to an existing building on the property which showed a slight contamination to the soil in the immediate area approximately one metre below the surface. The current contamination level sits at 7.4, more than 5 points higher than the acceptable 2 points level. The Town has previous experience with contamination clean-up which saw approximately $300,000 spent to clean two contamination areas, one where the Vermilion Credit Union is now located and also along the street north west of the Town office.
“If we go forward, we are going into the unknown,” Councillor Robert Pulyk stated regarding the uncertain level of contamination. Town Manager Dion Pollard, offered to “ease the minds of Council” by looking into getting a more intense test done to the soil surrounding the location. Another concern holding back the voting process was the fact that not all protective services were, at least at this time, 100 per cent committed to the possible project. The ambulance services are currently located across the train tracks across from the UFA store and the RCMP detachment is located near to Highway 41 across from the Co-op gas bar. Another concern was that, in the event of a catastrophic event such as a train derailment within the Town, all the Protective Service would be located adjacent
to the tracks and possibly hampering the services causing the emergency centre to have a secondary emergency muster location. After nearly an hour of discussion, all members voted to proceed with the approval to purchase and renovation of Lot 1A, Block 21, Plan 1221205 and Lot 6 and 7, Block 21, Plan 6647S (excepting thereout: the westerly 50 feet throughout of Lot six and the westerly 62 feet throughout of lot 7, for the purpose of protective services through the issuance of a debenture in the amount of $1,350,000. It was followed by a motion to proceed to give first reading to Bylaw 1-2015 and proceed to advertise the notice to electors. Council will address the next step in the process of purchase after a two week waiting period to allow for public notification.

Winter Reading Program that will be running for two months. Visit the library in January to pick up your reading log and learn all the details. For the months of January and February, keep track of your reading, and if you read for 7 hours during this time (that is only 15 minutes a day), your name goes into a draw for one of
six iPad Minis or many other prizes. The Winter Reading Program is sponsored by Northern Lights Library System and is open to all ages (children and adults). Keeping Kids Active Indoors Jodi Simmonds, VIBE Coach Submitted
We all know that keeping active is important to our overall mental and physical health. Getting outside is a great way to get moving with your kids. So what do you do when it’s just too cold to play outside safely for the amount of time you normally would? My first suggestion is to try to get outside anyway, even if it’s just for a shorter period of time. Fresh air and sunshine can do wonders to make us all feel better. Dress appropriately and only stay outside for 15 minutes or so if that’s what you can manage comfortably and safely. That will still leave a lot of time during the day and kids need to remain active so what kinds of things can you do as a family indoors to keep moving on nasty, cold snow days? For younger children consider creating an indoor hopscotch using low tack masking tape and rolled up socks. Another fun game is to throw pillows around on the floor and have kids either play tag (where you can only jump between pillows and you can be tagged if you come off the pillow) or “musical pillows”. Younger kids also love creating table or furniture forts as well. Plan
on having a special picnic inside the fort they create. Older children might enjoy mini stick hockey in your basement or in a hallway or nerf basketball (I use a plastic garbage can and rolled up socks if I don’t have an actual nerf set). Create a circus theme and encourage your kids to learn to hulahoop or juggle. Set up a fitness circuit where kids have to do activities at each station (ie. 10 jumping jacks or even stretches). Consider playing an active board game like Twister or a video game like Wii Fit or Dance Dance Revolution to get everyone moving while playing at the same time. Teens might like to challenge themselves to try a yoga or Pilates DVD or pick a favourite piece of music and create their own fitness routine to the music and then teach it to the family. Resist the temptation to remain stationary on those cold days. You and your kids will enjoy playing together and you will all feel better after some activity. area news The Vermilion Voice | Januray 12, 2015 Vehicle Fire in Mannville At 8:45 am Sunday morning, members of the Mannville Fire Department were called out to a reported vehicle fire. Upon responding members found a 2015 hydrovac truck with a working fire in the engine and passenger compartments. All units responded and we were able to suppress the fire with no damage to the adjacent 21 other exposed units. Pictured on the right, Trevor Gillis and Grant Munro, two members of the Mannville Fire Department worked to suppress the truck fire. Zane Polishuk, pictured on left, Training Officer with the Mannville Fire Depar tment, was one of 11 members who responded to the Sunday morning truck fire in Mannville. Crews braved frigid temperatures to battle the fire.

After suffering a 4 to 0 loss on Friday night against the Lloydminster Bandits, the Vermilion Tigers roared back into action against the Saddle Lake Warriors in a game that was riddled with penalties. The first period remained scoreless but nearly half way through the second period Tigers’ Colby Bowman, assisted by Lucas Dennill and Layne Zack, would capitalize on a power play to give the Tigers the lead. As the game progressed the hits got harder and penalties kept coming. At one point, five Warriors were in the penalty box at the same time serving for a number of penalties including slashing, roughing, hits to the head and game misconducts. The Warriors put the pressure on the Tigers in the last few minutes of the game, causing a few scuffles on the ice, but the hometown cats would hold them off to hang on for the win. The Tigers seem to be struggling a bit this year and are sitting ninth place in the league 13 points ahead of the Warriors. The Tigers will travel to Frog Lake on January 17 and Killam in January 21. Welcome back to all staff and students. It was great to see everyone and hear about each other’s holidays. However, finals are just around the corner and high school students are busy reviewing and preparing for finals. The final exam schedule is on the school website at www.stjschool.org. We would like to thank our awesome janitors Erin and Dorothy Decker for the amazing job they do cleaning our school and all the extras they do so our school looks fantastic. Also a big thank you to Glen and Paulette Moir for all
the work they put in maintaining the school and special touches they add to create a positive and inviting atmosphere. The last day of classes for Grade 12 students this semester is Thursday, January 15, and for Grade 10 and 11 the last day of classes is Wednesday, January 21. There is no school for all students on Friday, January 30 and Monday, February 2 with the second semester beginning Tuesday, February 3. Thank you to the Grade 9 class for doing the readings, intentions, and gifts and thank you to the Grade 4 class for leading the congregation in singing as the choir. The readings and Father Roger’s homily reminded us that the greatest commandment is to “Love the Lord our God with all our hearts and our neighbours as ourselves”. Happy New Year Everyone from the Vermilion 4H Beef Club! The last two months have certainly been a busy time for our club with a num ber of ac tivities t ak ing p lac e. At our November meeting, our club decided to give a donation to Santa’s Anonymous as part of giving back to our community. We also had Mr. Geoff Brown, an instructor from Lakeland College in Vermilion, come to talk to our club about nutrition for 4H female projects. Mr. Brown discussed some of the differences between feeding a steer project and a heifer project, as well as the nutritional needs for bred heifer and cow calf projects. Thank you again Mr. Brown.
On December 3 our club visited L a ke l a n d C o l l e g e o f Ve r m i l i o n t o receive a tour of some of the different program areas and departments. Our tour was hosted by Mrs. Sara Jane Biglieni and she did a wonderful job of touring us and providing us with lots of information about the college. Thanks again for a great tour. December also saw our club send a team to the 4H Volleyball Tournament held in Vermilion and our team did very well and had lots of fun. On December 9, 2014 we held our monthly meeting at the Vermilion Agricultural Society Boardroom. All of our members brought food items for donation to the food bank. A good reminder that Christmas isn’t just about receiving, it is also about giving, especially to those less fortunate. In other business, we decided on
our club goal for this year which is “Encouraging members to do well in any project they do”. We also made rope halters which we can use to lead our project animals. Then, to wind the meeting up, we held our Christmas gift exchange, which is where every member brings a gift and exchanges it with a different one and then hopes no one steals it! On January 3 we had our Christmas par ty. We met at the C.N train station in the Vermilion Provincial Park and went tobogganing, played board games, made gingerbread houses, and drank hot-chocolate. A great time was had by all who attended. Our next meeting will be held on January 13 at the Vermilion Agricultural Society Boardroom.

2014 ended off with a Pancake Breakfast at our school and all the proceeds were donated to our Mannville Food Bank. The breakfast raised $450 and this amount was matched by the Kaziechko family. The Loonie Drive brought the total amount raised to $1038. We need to acknowledge Miss Almberg and her junior high leadership classes who arranged and worked the breakfast. VIBE in partnership with BTPS schools in our area is hosting the fifth Annual VIBE Mental Wellness Day on Wednesday, January 28. This day is set aside for our junior high students and is a full day of mental health wellness activities such as Yoga, Team Building with the RCMP and Self Esteem, to name a few. Just a reminder exam schedules have been handed out to the high school students. The last day for classes for our Grade 12s is Monday, January 19 and the last day for Grades 10 and 11 will be Friday, January 23.
Mannville School News While exam schedules have gone out to junior high students, they will be written during regular classes. Plans are in the works for our secondary ski trip in February but this time to Kinisoo Ridge in Cold Lake. The theme for our Kinderkids this month is Winter! They will be learning about snowflakes, reading about and creating snowmen and acting out the story of ‘The Mitten’. Their imagination station is a hot chocolate stand, the sand table has fake snow and the water table is full of pretend snow (baking soda and hair conditioner). The Grade 2 class has begun a delicious way to practice their basic adding and subtracting facts to 10. Every time they master a set of adding or subtracting facts, they receive a paper “scoop” of ice cream on their reward chart. Once the whole class has mastered their facts they will be rewarded with an ice cream party! What a tasty way to do math! Critters Take On Crooked Shooters Submitted
The Myrnam Ag Society hosted a fundraiser hockey game which saw the 790 CFCW Country Critters and the Myrnam Crooked Shooters on Thursday, January 8 with approximately 200 people in attendance. The funds raise were to be put towards the recently purchased zamboni, which was made possible with the help of members of
businesses of the Myrnam community. Guest Critter, Lawson Clyke proved invaluable to the team, scoring four goals and assisting with four more. With the final score of 16 - 10 in favour of the Critters, everyone in attendance agreed the game was very entertaining and was enjoyed by all. Three lucky contestants tried their shots in the Independant Jewellers Shoot-Out and the Crooked Shooters’ Murray Phillips
was “awarded” the Columbia First Goal Of The Game. The Myrnam Ag Society is thankful to all who attended and all of the volunteers for their help in making the game another successful event. In total, the evening proved to be a huge success raising $12,400 for the local organization. During the current season the Critters have raised $30,000 Guest Critter and over $770,000 in total since Myrnam’s Lawson Clyke was selected to play as the the team’s inception. Five Point W.I. Annual Report Lillian Konieczny Submitted
It was in August 1940, Five Point W.I. Branch was organized named for the five school districts: Pathfinder, Fidelity, Lake Geneva, Bloomington, and Hamilton. There were 14 charter members in 1940. Membership increased to more
than 20 over the years and decreased to five at the present time. Meetings always opened with drawing for the Sunshine girl of the meeting, singing a song, and repeating the creed. The meetings ended with a fun game of Bingo and lunch was served by the hostess. In September, the five members enjoyed an educational tour of the Ve r m i l i o n m u s e u m a n d C h i n e s e
dinner at the White Swan Restaurant. Five members attended the Constituency Conference hosted by Creighton W.I Branch. Five Point made donations towards the Grade 12 highest marks award, the CTS awards, the Mannville Library, and the Mannville Historical Society. We would like to welcome Miss Kailey Leggette to our VES family. She has just graduated from the University of Lethbridge. Miss Leggette will be busy teaching music to kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students, as well as supporting our early reading program. In early December, Mrs. Page showed the Grade 6 classes how to make pinch pots the way the Ancient Athenians would have made them. The first day was spent making the pots, and the following day students applied their designs. Mrs. Page took the 50 projects to the Pottery Guild for firing. This is the second year Mrs. Page has organized this valuable activity, and we greatly appreciate her expertise and effort. Basketball Club, coached by Mr. Beecroft, started on Monday, January 5. It will run after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:40-4:40 p.m. The club is open to any interested students from Grades 4 to 6. Students may come once or twice a week, whatever works for families. This will be a great opportunity to learn the skills of basketball and teamwork. January intramurals will be skiing and snowshoeing as weather and conditions allow. We hope to enjoy this Alberta winter. Ver milion Element ar y S c hool is pleased to offer an after school art club. The club will meet on Tuesdays from 3:45 – 5 p.m., beginning January 13 until February 23. Please note that there will be no art club on February 16, as this is a non-attendance day for students. Grade 2 Culture Fair will be held on January 16. They are looking forward to sharing their cultures through their annual potluck and the celebration of learning with the families of the Grade 2 students. The next Parent Advisory Council meeting will be on January 19 at 7 p.m. in the school library. Grade 4 teachers will be presenting. Please come out and see what an amazing school council we have. We have Farm Safety coming January 19, 20 and 21. Each class will have the opportunity to sit in on a 30-minute session. This month we will focus on Fairness. See page 52 of your child’s agenda for more information and each week in January there will be a ‘Character in Action’ message. Fairness is the state, condition, or quality of being fair, or free from bias of injustice. Fairness can look differently; it can be when everything is equal, when you get what you deserve and it can be that individuals get what they need. Fair isn’t always equal. Share with others; provide people with what they need; listen to what others have to say;

Water Line Trouble For Innisfree
The recent cold snap has caused residents and businesses within the Village of Innisfree a slight disruption in water services, as a main water line burst in the village on Sunday, January 4. Village of Innisfree CAO Jennifer Hodel, said it was difficult to get a crew in quickly to dig due to the cold weather and being a Sunday afternoon. With the Village’s Public Works Foreman unavailable at the time, former Water Treatment Operator Reid Bergman and former Public Works Foreman Eldon Kostynuk, responded to help locate the break near the corner of 51 Street and 48 Avenue, and assist with the repair. Water was shut off at the Village’s distribution centre but because it is a gravity-feed system, there were very few residents and businesses without water. Hodel said those without, were supplied with potable water upon request. The line was repaired mid-Tuesday and water services were restored. Innisfree Delnorte School was closed both Monday and Tuesday, as well as the regular Monday night bingo due to the water line break. Photo Karen Nedzielski.
