Three Vermilion young ladies will be heading to the Canadian Winter Games in mid-February. Erinn Baddock will play for the girls hockey team and Sydney and Brette Poliakiwski will complete in the Judo competition. Pictured here is Brette as she met New Brunswick’s Anna Gormley in the Quebec Judo Open semi finals, held in Montreal last November, for the U18 Under 52 kg which saw Brette put her opponent into a choke hold and causing Gormley to “tap out” in defeat. Brette later went on to win the finals and was awarded the gold medal for her division. Brette has been studying at the newly formed western Canada judo training centre in Lethbridge, Alberta. See the story on page 19.

Members were reminded to have certain project book pages ready to hand in at our next meeting on January 16.

Jessica Clyke, Myrnam Curling Rink Ice Technician, said the juniors had a great day at the Curling Funspiel on December 30. A curling Funspiel is a curling tournament where teams gather together to curl only, scores are not kept, so it is not competitive and everyone goes home with a prize.

There were eight teams in all, four in the

13 and under age group and four in the 14 and over age group. The youth gained extra curling experience and played some good games. Clyke thanked everyone for coming out to play and have fun.

The next curling bonspiel at the Myrnam Arena will be the Farmer’s Bonspiel on January 9 and 10, followed by a Men’s and Ladies Curling Bonspiel on February 6 and 7 and a Mixed Bonspiel on February 20 to 21.

Colleen Berg is the new coordinator for The Good Life Institute which serves as a hub to promote performances, courses, practices and other events organized by Vermilion’s community groups. They also organize and produce events and courses to augment our community’s various activities.

Berg moved to Vermilion in 1992.

After marrying her husband in 1999, they moved to a farm in Minburn. She recently retired from Scotiabank on March 1, 2014, and has served as a Good Life board member for the past two years, Berg accepted her new position in mid-December.

“What’s on your bucket list?” is the tag line for The Good Life Institute.

Berg asks everyone to think about what they would like to learn so they can be ready for the question when she comes around.

The Good Life Institute would like to announce that their emphasis is to showcase Vermilion for the next four events in 2015. The first activity is The Amazing Race and will take place on March 14. There will be a great, traveloriented prize for the winners. Teams of four will compete at venues throughout the Town of Vermilion.

Details are still being firmed up for this and the other three events which will take place in June, September and

December this coming year. Please check the Good Life Institute’s Facebook, Twitter and website pages to keep up-to-date as the year progresses.

New Year, New Beginnings Lorna Hamilton Editor

The rush of the holiday season is pretty much complete and we will all be settling back into our normal routines of our daily lives.

Each year for New Year’s people everywhere make New Year resolutions with the hopes of changing an aspect of their lives for the better. Whether it be to quit smoking, become more healthy, improve their finances and get debts paid off, fall in love, and in some cases people even make a resolution to be more thoughtful of others and hold doors open for someone, (which I find a little odd, wouldn’t you already do that?). But I guess with the way humanity has recently taken a turn for the worse, I can see why some individuals would have to try especially hard to be nice, for some, it doesn’t always come naturally.

I know each year mine has always been to quit smoking. So this year I decided I wasn’t going to make a resolution. I am going to live each day with optimism, surround myself with things that make me happy and maybe, just maybe, I will make the decision at some point to try and quit

with no pressure placed upon myself.

If one day I decide, ok this is the day I’m going to attempt to quit, I’m not going to tell anyone and if I succeed then I am sure over time, they will realize I don’t have a cigarette between my fingers and they will be pleased enough.

I look at it like this, you make the announcement and all of a sudden everyone’s eyes are gazing upon you each and every day, just waiting for the time to come when you break down and smoke. Thanks, but no thanks. I don’t need that stress put on top of an already stressful decision to try and kick the habit.

Researchers have compiled statistics on the success rate of New Year resolutions and the numbers are actually a little surprising. On average only eight percent of people who make a resolution actually succeed, according to www.forbes.com .

You may be sitting there asking yourself why are the numbers so incredibly low, well the answers are pretty simple and the three main reasons why we fail at our New Year resolution are firstly, we make our lists to long. We decide, I am going to do this and this and this, this year and we are doomed to fail on at least half of them.

Secondly, we don’t make our resolutions tangible. It’s easy enough to say I am going to lose weight this year, but if you don’t set

goals that are attainable, how will you ever reach them? When setting a goal such as losing weight or saving more money, you have to make the goal within the limits of possibility. For example, if your goal is to lose say 20 pounds, don’t go on a starvation diet the day after New Year’s and expect to lose those 20 pounds in a week or a month. Make your goal to lose a pound maybe two a week. Unrealistic goals are the recipe for disaster. Humans are known to try to be over achievers and if you set your goals beyond the limits of possibility then of course we are going to fail.

Thirdly, negativity, guilt and lack of support; these three words can be the ultimate deal breaker. Imagine trying your best to lose weight or quit smoking and everyone around you is just sitting there waiting for you to fail. Do you think you are going to succeed, absolutely not! Are you going to beat yourself up if you happen to fall off the wagon a couple times? Chances are that’s a yes. Without support from family and friends you are doomed from the start.

I can remember on numerous occasions when I tried to quit smoking the feelings of guilt because I got stressed and smoked a cigarette. The times when I became, let’s say in a very bad mood, and felt enormous guilt for barking at one of the children, which in turn made me smoke another one. The

many times when my family would get completely frustrated with my mood swings and actually look at me and tell me to go buy a pack of smokes.

The thing is we all want to make our lives better and for the people around us that we care about. We have to set realistic goals.

We have to support the people around us who are trying their best to stay true to their resolution, and above all else if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Submitted Aiden Marshall gave the woodworking report and told us that he built a bird house. Nicholas Braconnier built We met on December 13 as a multi- a remote c ontrol stand and Caleb club. Nicholas Braconnier gave the Wyard-Scott built a tv stand. Kieran Speck and Kellen Pike built a tool

box for a boat. Reanne Ewashko told us they did crafts for the horse club.

Ainsley Bader gave us the report for creative options. Creative options is the girly stuff. They learned to wash someone else’s hair and to do braids.

We are all excited for our Christmas party in the new year. If there is

enough snow, we’ll go tobogganing, but if there isn’t we will go bowling.

Our next meeting will take place on January 8. Our public speaking will be in February. If you would like to be a judge, please call Vicky Marshall at 763-2172. Happy New Year!

On November 3 and 25 we made Christmas wreaths for the Holiday in the Hallway. I hope they went for lots of money. This was to help raise money for the library.

In foods we made some delicious banana bread on December 3.

Also in Outdoors we went to Launch, Trampoline World on December 6. We had a few injuries, but everyone had fun.

The club has also orderd bags and

jackets, but there were some mistakes in the sizes so they should be coming in soon.

We have had a busy and good start to the beginning of the year, everyone is looking forward to having lots of fun this year.

Our next meeting was on December 8, we had a potluck Christmas party.

We will be holding meetings on the second Monday of each month.

The Value Of A Good Name Dad and I rode t h e c o u l e e s l o o king at the cattle and checking things on a r e g u l ar b a s i s. It was so special to ride beside him, knee to knee, and listen to him telling me about things he thought I should know. Looking back now, I realize he invented ways to be with me like that in our daily farm work, building and fixing fence and all the farm work where people learned to work together.

I was one extremely luck y young man. Dad had his opinions and ideas and, by golly, there were times I didn’t a g r e e, m e b e i n g a n i n d e p e n d e n t minded young man. Good thing Dad was so patient is all I can say to that.

One thing that came out and never changed was that we had to take responsibility for what we did, no exceptions! Mom and Dad really couldn’t stand any kind of shirking of duty and you better not be caught even thinking of deceit, any kind of it really.

Dad would often say, “They have a good name.” In the old, pioneer times a person who lived on the shady

side of life would soon get known and would more than likely not hang around. People couldn’t afford to take on dealing with people who didn’t play by the rules.

Yes, a person was respected if they earned a reputation for fair, honest dealing in any or all of their daily life.

Dad would often say a lifetime of good could be undone with just one instant of something that was considered under handed.

You didn’t trust someone who had the name of not paying his bills. Any machine company that came out with a dud machine would have a hard time selling anything with the same colour on it.

Almost any product that was important to your way of life had to have been known to have that good reputation.

You likely wouldn’t get hired even in a pinch, as long as it was known that, “He isn’t much good.”

Dad held great store in keeping his good name and so often told me, “You’ve been given a good name, try to keep it.”

B e i n g a s t r a i g h t s h o o t e r, h a r d worker, a shoulder to lean on, or even just a good neighbour often counted far more than wealth, as so of ten

the wealthy proved to be none of the above!

You’d hear the neighbour mention that so-and-so’s dog would bite you if it got the chance and you’d better watch. Or maybe, someone’s horse liked to kick, they had that moniker tacked onto their being and soon you’d recognize that and be wary.

People would travel for miles to patronize a business that was known for fair, honest dealings, word soon got around.

Even fence crawling old cows would soon be noticed and would be lucky if they didn’t get shipped. You didn’t want them to teach the other animals the joy of greener pastures across the fence. So-and-so’s young teenager is a reckless driver and is hell bent for trouble. I guess the lucky ones saw the light and stayed out of trouble as they got older, but the name stuck with them through their lives. That’s just the way it was.

We trusted our friends when they told us that such-and-such variety of grain or breed of cattle or hogs would yield or do well in the conditions we were in and our lives depended on that. You trusted their judgment and word. So that’s the way life endured in those early times, you realized that

you had to earn the trust and respect of those around you by building a good fence and keeping your cattle out of their crop and if any damage occurred, you’d see they were compensated.

Do you remember neighbours who borrowed things and were slow in the returning them or even maybe bringing it back in broken condition? The memory stayed a long time, didn’t it?

I guess that a “set of values” was what we were taught and expected to carry on and pass on to our children.

Let’s hope that these values aren’t lost in the coming generations as we are more mobile and populations are transient and coming and going so a good name isn’t as relevant as our pioneers needed.

I’m so glad I got to see the old times and the values that really formed the hard working, honest culture that we had out here in “hick land,” the land of red necks and people of the soil.

May they endure long in this fair land.

I sing a Merle Haggard song called, “Roots of My Raisin’.” One line says, “He could borrow money at the bank, simply on his word.”

That’s the way it was. Guess that says it all.

If we can suspend the aversion to cold many of us feel, these days can offer opportunity for reflection and comfort. They can bring calm, and allow us time to take inventory.

To really hear your own heartbeat, you must be quiet. If what you hear is a steady, rhythmic pulsing, that’s reason enough to rejoice. You’re alive.

It’s no coincidence that we’re deeply af fected by the rhy thm of a steady drum beat when we hear it. It’s the rhythm of our life force. Even if you’re not inclined to dance, you may wish to consider rising just once a year to

Remember the long, languid days of youth when a day seemed to stretch out before you like a lithe cat waking af ter a nap in a sunny windowsill?

There seemed then to be all the time in the world to make plans for future achievements and then a lifetime to see them through to fruition. Tomorrow, I will...

Time is a constant throughout our lives. There are t went y-four hours afforded to each day, no more and no less. Unless our actions are obstructed by outside forces, only we decide how we use that time. We may sleep for twelve of the twenty-four hours. We may study or work toward achieving desired goals. We may dance long into the night, feud with our neighbours, pine for days long past, or howl at the moon. We can spend our time any way we like. That’s the beauty of choice. Of freedom.

Why, if it’s a constant throughout our lives, does it so often feel as we advance in age that time is less and less like a lazy, unhurried feline and more like a thoroughbred galloping to keep just a few paces ahead of a track that’s folding up into itself right behind us?

It might be a folly of human nature t h at t h e m aj or i t y of u s n e g l e c t to consider the advantage of focus and ad van c e p lanning. J o hn Lenno n’s claim that “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” might be altered slightly to reflect how many of us conduct ourselves. Life is what happens to you because you never bothered to make any plans? If that sounds grim, it isn’t intended to be so. Allowing potential to stagnate does seem wasteful though.

What “ happens” to us in life can hardly ever be credited to mere chance. Rather, it’s a direct result of our own choices, or lack of them.

There’s a challenge awaiting us.

The end of one year and the beginning of another is as good a time as any to take stock. Quiet, misty days of winter provide a great opportunity to halt all mundane activity and consider where we stand right now, in the present moment, and decide with honesty how we feel about that place.

If we’re not quite satisfied with what we see, it’s up to us to address that reality. Change is possible.

Make a list. It may be comprised of specific steps leading toward achieving a small goal or, if you’re ready, a life altering one. Make the list. Not tomorrow or next week. Now. Revise the content until it reflects the steps you think you need to take in order to arrive at the place you intend to take some aspect of your life. Then see what happens when you embark on the journey.

Review your list often. Take time to listen to your hear tbeat. So long as you can still hear the rhythm of it, there is still plenty of time.

Recycled Heirlooms Featured At Elevation Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Local ar tist Shannon Tarapaski, has been collecting antique silverware through auctions and estate sales, but not for use during an afternoon tea or fancy dinner. Her collections are rather to feed her jewelry artwork known as Vintage Rose Jewellery.

Tarapaski said her love for making the jewelry started with a trip to California where she notice a number of people wearing the peculiar silver rings and after getting the nerve to ask someone what they were, she was told they were spoon rings. That is when Tarapaski remembered admiring a chunky silver ring her mom would wear in the late 70s.

She says this is where her business idea was born, named after her mom Rose, and her love of antique and thrift store shopping.

Immediately upon her return from California, she went to work collecting spoons from anywhere she could.

Tarapaski began practicing on stainless steel pieces, grinding and cutting,

until she found the courage to start working with the priceless old silver spoons creating the rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets in her collection.

Creating the pieces of art is one thing but what Tarapaski says is most enjoyable is the research she does to find dates on when the pieces were originally produced. Every piece of jewelry she creates comes with a story on when the spoon or cutler y was originally made.

“Each piece is unique and takes different amounts of time. It could be anywhere from an hour to three hours for one piece. Working with custom orders takes the longest as I take my time because it’s someone else’s treasures and I don’t want to mess up.”

Tarapaski’s art has connected her with many people of which she has created custom orders from cherished family heirlooms.

One particular piece, belonging to a lady who had only one spoon left from her mother’s silver ware collection, touched Tarapaski’s heart. The artist created a one-of-a-kind ring and upon delivering the piece, the lady wept when

placing it on her finger.

Another creation was for a lady who lost a loved one whom she called her guardian angel. Tarapaski worked the 110 year old metal into a pendant as requested so the client could wear it close to her heart.

Tarapaski says purchasers of the jewelry have become more than clients as many have become close friends which she keeps in contact with from time to time.

“The spoons have been more than a job for me,” Tarapaski said. “I’ve touched people and made people happy with

some new family heirlooms.”

Tarapaski’s art has been a feature at Vermilion’s new main street Elevation, Yoga Studio, Wellenss Centre, and Boutique where owner Tannis Henderson features local artists’ work on a regular basis. During the past holiday season, Tarapaski has had to make frequent trips from her Innisfree area home to replenish the stock being purchased at the store.

“I hoped people would like what I do and what I love doing but had no idea it would be like this.”

I was recently asked what my New Ye a r r e s o l u t i o n s were this year, and while I haven’t made them yet, I probably will. This year I am adding in something different.

My desire at year end has been to focus on what I have accomplished in 2014, and all the good that the year has brought to me. I am also choosing to remember happy times and appreciate the people that I have come into contact with over the year. As I reflect on all the good in the past year I feel very grateful, thankful, blessed and amazed, in doing so, I have ended 2014 and started 2015 feeling happy. I must admit it feels so much better than to immediately delve

into creating a long list of my many behavioural short comings and their much needed solutions, aka New Year’s resolutions. That usually makes me feel like such a looser that really needs to pull up her socks in so many areas of life. Not a good feeling. The truth is that our weakness can become our strengths and that even in our imperfection, we all have great worth and uniqueness.

People have said to me that they don’t make New Year’s resolutions “because they are a waste of time and don’t come to anything.” While this half empty cup point of view may sound a bit negative, these people actually have the truth of science on their side, as studies have shown that 88 per cent of all New Year’s resolutions fail.

So, if we take the science of probability, which is a numbers game, you would have to make at least eight resolutions

in the hope of reaching your goal for just one resolution... in theory. You would also have to make an honest effort. In case you would like to play eight resolution roulette, here is a possible list to select from: take less selfies, eat healthier, exercise more, connect with more people in person instead of on Facebook, stop smoking, loose a few pounds, make some new friends, get in touch with old friends, talk less, listen more, volunteer more, drink less (especially if you are hung over from New Year’s Eve) - but party more, be more organized, love fearlessly, smile more, get more sleep, learn a new skill, reduce stress, pray more, forgive always, work harder or work less, budget better, save more money, give away more money, stop procrastinating, do what you love, realize a dream, make a small difference and choose to be happy.

If you can harness the power of habit, you can slowly ingrain your desired positive changes into your life. The Japanese have a word for slow positive change, and that word is kaizen. It means small incremental improvements done consistently. It is similar to the baby step method used by Olympians to win gold medals, where constant work is made towards the goal in small steps.

If we see and are thankful for the progress we have made in these small steps of improvement, we feel good; have positive reinforcement and encouragement to continue on our path of growth.

As we begin 2015, I wish you all a New Year of health and fulfillment, a choice to be happy, to be blessed with prosperity in all things and recognizable successful opportunities. Happy New Year!

soaking in The Fun at The spray Park’s Grand Opening (July 14 issue) Since May of 2014 the Vermilion Provincial Park has been operating a spray park. More than two years of effort went into the project which included planning, consultation and construction. Now the spray park is open and being enjoyed by many. On July 12 at 12:30 in the sunny afternoon at the Provincial Park’s spray park location, the town hosted a Grand Opening event in celebration of the collaboration among Alberta Parks, The Town of Vermilion, and the more than 40 community/corporate sponsors who together turned the old out of commission wade pool into a spray park. Town of Vermilion Councillor Robert Pulyk and Minister of Tourism Dr. Richard Starke, along with a crowd of kids cut the ribbon in celebration.

vermilion voice Celebrates Ten years (July 21 issue) A barbeque lunch was served at the Vermilion Voice on July 16 to celebrate the tenth Anniversary of the Vermilion Voice newspaper. Hot dogs, hamburgers, refreshments and cake were available and the cost was by donation. Proceeds from the lunch were donated to VIBE (Vermilion Is Being Empowered). The VIBE team served up lunch to locals, from noon until two in the afternoon.

vermilion annual Fair (July 28 issue) This year’s slogan was “From Wagon Wheels to Ferris Wheels. ” Rain showers one minute to sweltering sun the next didn’t keep the crowds of people local and non-local from attending the events of this year’s Fair.

“The heat is On in Dewberry” (august 4 issue) Frog Lake/Dewberry Chuckwagon races kicked off on Thursday, July 31 at the Dewberry grounds. It was a hot day, but a cool breeze blew through that provided some relief from the heat.

innisfree Fair (august 18 issue) The Fair offered a horse show, quilts, arts and crafts, but the soap box derby, held just before supper, was a hit.

Organizer Jannette Riedel said, “The Mannville Minburn Innisfree Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) offers the soap box derby program every year to keep up the community spirit. We also try to make it educational.” The FCSS mandate is to keep Alberta communities thriving by running prevention programming.

wild Pink yonder rides Through vermilion (august 11 issue) The Town of Vermilion was turned pink before the Wild Pink Yonder trail ride passed through Vermilion. Local businesses put up pink ribbons and raised money in support of finding a cure for Breast Cancer. Wild Pink Yonder began when founder Jane Hurl was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and wanted to give back for all the support she received during her battle with cancer.

100th anniversary of war Measures act (august 25 issue) St.Olga’s Parish in Vermilion, held a plaque unveiling on August 22 at 11 a.m. The event marked the 100th Anniversary of the implementation of the War Measures Act. 100 plaques were simultaneously unveiled coast to coast across Canada. During the memorial Zenovia Mudryk, President of the Parish Council said “Thank you everyone for coming to help bring awareness to the unjust imprisonments and to help mark the anniversary of the implementation of the War Measures Act. Our prayers go out to those who were branded as enemy aliens and wrongly imprisoned.”

Brandon’s Taste of Fame (august 18 issue) The Memorial Cup and the Western Hockey Cup are usually at home in Toronto but on August 14 Brandon Baddock had the pleasure of bringing the cups to his home town of Vermilion. Brandon also had the opportunity of bringing both cups to his families’ businesses: Baddock’s Power Products Ltd., and Ireland Farm Equipment Ltd.

Dewberry Celebrates Bensmiller Win (September 1 Issue) A celebration was held in Dewberry Sports Grounds on August 23 to congratulate Kurt Bensmiller for his two most recent career show championship wins at the Ponoka (June 26-July 1) and the Calgary (July4-13) Stampedes. ABC Days In Vermilion (September 29 Issue) Dallas Arcand Jr. and Kurt Young visited VES and St. Jerome’s as one of the presentations opening Vermilion’s Alberta Culture Days on September 26. Arcand is the son of a three time world hula hoop champion. He performed in over 300 shows by the time he was ten years old. He even performed at the London Olympics with his father.

APCCA Champion Awards Banquet (October 20 Issue) Wayne Hardstaff is a member of Alberta Professional Chuck Wagon and Chariot Association who has raced all over Alberta and won numerous awards over the past 31 years he has been racing. An awards banquet was held for him at the Vermilion Elks Hall on October 18 following an APCCA meeting. Wayne Hardstaff placed first in the overall standings for 2014 chuck wagons.

AFSC Grand Opening (November 17 Issue) AFSC has been around for over 80 years and has been in the Vermilion Provincial building since the mid to late 1970s, which was approximately a quarter of the size of this new building that first opened its doors in May 2014. Mayor Bruce MacDuff presented a certificate to Jim Majeski on behalf of the Town of Vermilion for the Grand Opening of the AFSC that took place on November 20, after the harvest.

Heavy Oil Show (September 15 Issue) The Lloyminster Heavy Oil Show was held this past Wednesday and Thursday. 2014 Small Business Awards (October 27 Issue) More than 60 people attended the annual Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards luncheon on Friday, October 24 at the Seniors Centre, marking the end of the week-long Small Business Week Celebrations.

St. Jerome’s Boys VB Win Provincials (November 24 Issue) The St. Jerome’s Senior Boys Volleyball team finished first in their pool. They beat Bassano, Thorhill, Rundle Academy from Fahler and new Norway. Then went on to win gold in the finals. They beat out Rosemary in two sets in the finals after defeating Bassano in the semifinals. The last time the Sr. Boys won was 30 years ago in 1984 when coach Al Rogan was in grade 12.

Curling Champions Visits Mannville (December 15 Issue) Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing curled with two Senior High curling teams from Mannville School on December 8 while Mannville’s Junior High Curling teams were among the spectators. CJ’s Cafe Business Looks Up Nicole Crossan Reporter

Only a year ago, too few employees and too little support for the restaurant led to the announcement that unless their situation changed, the restaurant may close its doors.

Since then, the situation has improved miraculously.

The c losure of the c orner store provided an opportunity for the restaurant to increase the number of commodities they could sell at a time of year when business there is customarily at its slowest, in

the fall/winter season and especially after Christmas. Instead of business slowing down, it has increased and new people have joined the coffee crew to replace those that have moved or passed away.

CJ’s Cafe opened on December 12, 2006 by owners Colleen MacKenzie and Jessica Clyke. They employ students, casual and part time adults and Rick MacKenzie, Colleen’s husband, who manages the Myrnam Golf and Country Club also helps out at the restaurant when needed. They have run a full menu restaurant open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and host the regular 2

p.m. coffee crew who have been coming there for 8 years.

Both the MacKenzie and Clyke families have a good reputation around town because of their compassion for those in need and the many hours of volunteer work they have put in at nearly every club, sport, and organization in and around Myrnam, including the Curling Clubs in both Myrnam and Vermilion, Royal Purple, the Golf Club, and Ukrainian Dance.

To further help members of the community, local artists are given space to sell their wares on consignment at CJ’s Cafe.

hangings hang alongside Alvin Erickson’s framed paintings. On the opposite side of the restaurant hang Quilts by Carlene Wheeler and aprons sewn by Colleen MacKenzie.

The most popular foods year round have been the homemade perogies and the clubhouse sandwiches which are made with non-processed meat.

People come in all week to have CJ’s homemade perogies and top it off with a slice of coconut cream pie and soft ice cream. In summer, their cool treats like milkshakes, soft ice cream cones and slushies are the most popular.

Myrnam is a small town that sits between two major highways: Highway 881 that goes to St. Paul to the north and Mannville to the south, and Highway 45 that goes to Two Hills to the west, and Highway 41 to the east. Some of the main businesses in town include two hair salons, two restaurants, two banks, Myrnam Insurance, the corner store, and a Canada and USA nationwide trucking company called Ziniewicz Enterprises Inc. With such a small community base, shopping local means even more to business survival and the loss of a business there can have far reaching effects on residents, other businesses and travellers passing through.

Since Myrnam is at least a twenty minute drive from any major shopping centres, residents without transportation need to have a place to purchase food and other items in case of emergency. This has been made more difficult now that the M&T Corner Food Stop closed on November 17, 2014.

We really appreciate the people who supported our business. Thank you for your support and we wish all the best to the new owners, Hodgins commented.

When asked how the closure has affected other businesses, Colleen MacKenzie, one of the owners of CJ’s Cafe just a few buildings further up Main Street in Myrnam, stated business has increased there, yet the other Myrnam restaurant, Edsel’s has seen little change.

This may stem from some changes that were made at CJ’s Cafe to compensate for the loss of the store. At the request of their customers, MacKenzie and Clyke added a selection of groceries in addition to increasing the number of baked goods.

CJ’s Cafe now sells dairy, meat, produce, baking supplies and more homemade food such as bread, pies and two types of fudge (brown sugar and chocolate).

The new business that will be opening at the site of the Corner Stop will be called Tobin’s Wharf and is currently being renovated to be transformed into a Newfoundland/Irish Pub atmosphere, “Cheers” style where everyone knows your name, Tobin said.

A wharf is a place to dock boats, so the

decor may create the atmosphere of being inside a boat or at the wharf, portal and all. There will be a small dance floor and planned activities include: Friday Karaoke

nights and Saturdays Open Mike nights.

The opening day is yet to be announced but plans are to have it open by the beginning of February.

It’s that time of the year again where the possibility of getting stuck in a snow bank is a reality. Not just in rural Alberta, but even in the towns these days too.

Please remind students that they need to be dressed properly for the winter weather. They should carr y mitts, toques and a jacket with them in case of emergency. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Mrs. Campbell’s Grade 3 class have been exploring sound waves and vibrations with a variety of experiments and demonstrations in science. They also completed a Pirate Unit in language

arts and wrapped it up by making treasure maps, which can be seen on the bulletin board outside their classroom.

In Mr. Maron’s Social 20 classes, they keep a close watch on the current events that are occurring throughout the world by watching the Global N at i o n a l N ews B r o ad c a s t s ever a l times per week. This can lead to some fairly interesting discussions about world events. Parents, strike up a conversation with your Grade 11 child about current events. You might be surprised how much they are aware of!

In Social 8, they have been immersi n g t h e m s e l ve s i n l e a r n i n g a b o u t the Renaissance period. In c lass, they covered the course by watching videos, having discussions, and c om pleting questions. Sometimes

class discussions take up a lot of time because the Grade 8’s love getting Mr. Maron way off topic, but it all seems to relate to the Renaissance somehow.

Students are fascinated how events that took place more than 500 years ago can still be relevant today.

Exam schedules for January have been handed out to secondary students. The last day for classes for Grade 12 is Monday, January 19 and the last day for Grades 10 and 11 will be Friday, January 23. Beef Question For McDonald’s Lakeland College Submitted

The premise is simple. If you have a question about their food, McDonald’s Canada will provide you with a timely answer, even with assistance from industry professionals, as part of their ‘Our Food, Your Questions’ campaign.

“One of the big questions that keeps reoccurring is ‘Are your hamburger patties 100 per cent real beef?’” says Jordan Buba. “We worked with McDonald’s to answer the question.”

That’s how the Lakeland College alumnus made her debut in film, starring in both the question-and-answer video and the restaurant’s Mighty Angus Burger commercial.

Buba is of Lewis Farms – a third- and fourth-generation family-run operation that includes 450 acres (182 hectares) of seed potato production, 3,000 acres (1,214 hectares) of grain production and 900 head of cattle. The farm was founded

by Buba’s great-grandfather and it was her grandfather Jack Lewis – a graduate of Lakeland’s agriculture program in 1951 – who expanded the original 320-acre farm. Following her own graduation from Lakeland College in 2007, Buba joined the family business working in the cattle operation near Spruce Grove.

I n e a r l y O c t o b e r, M c D o n a l d ’s approached Lewis Farms about two

film projects and within a few weeks the company was on site at the farm filming Buba, her uncle and cousin for both projects, which aired at the start of November.

“It was all fairly quick,” says Buba, who participated in McDonald’s All-Access Moms project three years before. “Two full days of fun and filming, we know what they shot and what they used so it’s neat to see how it all came together at the end.”

The “Our Food, Your Questions” video follows Buba from her family’s farm to the Cargill plant located three kilometers down the road and finally to a local McDonald’s restaurant where she learns how the world-famous hamburger patties are cooked.

“They are promoting real, true beef,” says Buba, who is a third- generation Lakeland alumnus. “Many people don’t know that all of the McDonald’s hamburger patties for Canada are made in Spruce Grove, which is a pretty incredible thing.This plant is producing close to three million hamburgers a day. It’s a pretty neat operation.”

While Buba’s participation in the videos has not garnered her celebrity status at home, she says feedback from family and friends has been positive.

“Lots of people really like it. The people that know us know that (McDonald’s) is approaching real farmers as opposed to every time you see a commercial on television you’re not sure if it’s staged,” she says. “It’s a unique experience for people

Edsel’s Grill Peeks Interest

Cheryl and Ty Hakooja opened the Edsel’s Grill on Highway 881 on January 26, 2007, nearly eight years ago, based on the 50s style Edsel car theme. What captures attention when visitors first go there is the front of a 1958 Edsel Citation that hangs from the wall surrounded by a miniature museum of car-themed pictures.

Then there are the saddle topped bar stools that surround the milkshake style bar.

When they first opened, their hours were 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week and their menu had pizzas that were the names of various types of Edsel vehicles.

The Villager pizza, for example, was topped with Mundare sausage and onions while

the Citation was a fully loaded pizza and the Ranger was topped with ground beef and onions or you could pick your own toppings.

Due to a shortage of hired help, they downsized their restaurant three years after they opened by changing their menu and decreasing the days they were open to Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ty Hakooja has won prizes and trophies for his restorations of cars, buggies, snowmobiles and motorcycles. The Vermilion Public Library have been hosting a provincial art exhibit from midDecember to January 21 and part of this exhibit has peaked the interest as visitors to the library were queried on what they thought it was. Out of 15 people, only three guessed that it was some type of head covering, which is correct. The largest number of people; however, guessed that it was some type of cake and other guesses included a cornucopia, candles, a banana split, a turkey and a chicken.

Curloker The Fifth Annual Curloker to take place at the Vermilion Curling Rink was filled to its maximum number of 20 teams on January 2 and 3. It is called a Curloker because it is a curling bonspiel mixed with card games.

The goal is for teams to win the most points in three separate games of each curling and card games. Cash prizes were given to the top four teams and two random teams who placed tenth and nineteenth to encourage teams to come out to play year after year. Three young ladies from Vermilion are set to compete at the Canada Winter Games this February in Prince George, British Columbia.

As published in the December 8 issue of The Voice, Erinn Baddock was named to play on the Alberta Female hockey team, but there are also two Vermilion sisters who will also travel to compete in Judo competition.

18 year old Sydney Poliakiwski and younger sister Brette, have also qualified to compete at the Games but for two different provinces. Sydney has been training out of a club in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, while younger sister Brette has been training at the newly-established Western Canada Judo Training centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Until September, the only training centre was in eastern Canada which went meant a huge distance for many to travel. For 16 year old Brette this was not a possibility, so when the announcement was made there would be a western Canada centre, Brette began trying to find a way to attend. Brette’s mom Nicole, said her daughter made most of the arrangements with teachers and trainers to make her dream of training at a higher level, a possibility.

Leaving home at a young age, a heavy workout and training schedule as well as keeping up her studies, would be all watched under the microscope. Brette would be under careful scrutiny as she would be the “test subject” on whether the training centre would successful and worthy project.

Not only has the centre proven to be successful, Brette has moved from number three to number one in Canada in her age and weight division, U18 (Under 18 years) under 52 kg, she has also claimed top spot in the U21 and number three in the Senior (open) division where she squares off against competitors nearly double her age.

This has seen Brette become somewhat of a poster child for the Lethbridge training centre.

This is no easy feat as it requires determination and commitment on behalf of the competitor and at the age of 16, there can be many distractions and temptations.

Brette’s day typically starts in the wee hours of the morning with a visit to the gym for the morning’s cardio workout, then off to school where she studies more than the suggested two core-subjects per semester, followed with hours of Judo training after school. But the day’s not over for her, as many times she will head back to the gym for an evening workout.

Brette is currently in Montreal to complete a one-week training session before compet-

ing in the Elite 8 Invitational on January 10 and 11 which she had previously qualified for. The “Elite 8” is where only the top eight competitors are selected to compete at the National level in the U18 and Senior Level.

Brette has qualified for both categories.

Even though Brette has been living in Lethbridge, she has been maintaining her local extracurricular activities as if she were actually in attendance. An active Vermilion 4H Beef Club member, she has been

using Skype video conferencing during the Vermilion Club’s meetings, something that the members have not experienced before.

All in favour as her continued commitment to maintaining her 4H year. Although she will transfer back to St. Jerome’s School in February for the second semester of her Grade 10 year, Brette has plans of returning to the Lethbridge training centre in the fall to further her training.
