Mabel Smart of Scotiabank presented three Vermilion Atom Tigers hockey teams with a $1,000 cheque.

Two presentations were made to the two boys Atom teams on December 12 and the final presentation was made

to the girls Atom team on Decem ber 15 at the Vermilion Arena. Team members also received toques and backpacks while the coaches received player’s boards. Scotiabank has been ver y suppor tive of hockey over the years. They annually donate to 5,000 hockey teams across Canada.

Vermilion Figure Skating Competition Results:

On Saturday, December 13, 2014, the Vermilion Skating Club had 7 skaters attend the Beary Blue Fun Meet Competition in Wainwright, AB. The 7 skaters competed in 13 events and brought home 5 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals and 3 Bronze Medals.

The girls had a blast and for 2 of them, it was their first skating competition.

2014: A Successful And Eventful Year – PART II

As the Christmas holidays approach and 2014 draws to a close, I would like to take the time to reflect on the very productive and eventful year we have had here on Parliament Hill.

CANADA’S PRINCIPLED STANCE ON THE WORLD STAGE 2014 marked a year of tension and strife on the international stage. Canada, however, continued our commitment to our allies and the values of peace and democracy in the midst of this uncertainty.

In September, my colleagues and I welcomed Ukrainian President Poroshenko to Canada’s Parliament. It was a very moving and inspiring visit which reaffirmed Canada’s friendship and commitment to a sovereign Ukraine. Since Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukraine began, Canada has imposed travel bans and economic sanctions against a number of Russian and Ukrainian individuals responsible for threatening the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

In addition to a ground-breaking visit in March, Prime Minister Stephen Harper committed $11 million to support a presidential election monitoring mission to Ukraine in which 500 Canadians participated.

Going forward, Canada will continue to provide additional humanitarian assistance such as food, medical support and safe drinking water; work with our NATO allies in providing non-lethal military aid and training to the region; and promote additional economic reforms, including steps to further pursue a Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement. Canada remains one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters as it works to restore order within its borders.

At the same time, I’m proud of Canada’s stand with our allies against the barbarism of ISIL. Canada is a top tier humanitarian donor to the region and has committed a total of $36.9 million in humanitarian assistance since the beginning of the year for Iraqis and Syrians affected by the conflict.

On my recent trip to visit refugee camps in Northern Iraq, I met with people directly affected by the violence. In their words, the only real solution is for other countries to help stabilize their home areas so they can return to their communities and rebuild their lives. It is with great pride

that I acknowledge the actions taken by our Government; using our heavy lift aircraft to help arm the Kurds to fight ISIL, help with training their army, and help with air strikes. This will take time, but what we are doing is very important to the good people of Iraq.

STRENGTHENING DEMOCRACY 2014 also marked a year of substantial progress for Canadian democracy. Election laws were strengthened and protected under the Fair Elections Act, which received Royal Assent on June 19th of this year. We took initiative on women’s issues by opening consultations on women in the workplace. Changes were made to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to give Canadians top priority for available jobs.

We continued to respect the freedom of law abiding gun owners. Swift action was taken to provide amnesty for the abrupt reclassification of Swiss Arms rifles by high level bureaucrats, and new legislation was introduced to eliminate needless red tape and streamline the licensing process under the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act. STANDING UP FOR CANADIAN FARMERS This year, Western Canadian grain farmers saw a decent crop after a historic yield last year, resulting in significant backlogs. Our Government acted immediately to address the backlog by establishing minimum grain volumes that rail companies are required to move per week until March 2015. We have also passed Bill C-30, the Fair Rail for Grain Farmers Act to address rail capacity challenges in the long-term.

Like every other farmer, I welcomed the action taken by our Government to get grain moving because I had canola, wheat and oats in bags on the ground.

The Act increases supply chain transparency, strengthens contracts between producers and shippers, and ensures the entire grain handling and transportation system is working at full capacity – helping to avoid a repeat of last year’s problems and preparing us for even bigger yields in the future. It builds on our Government’s continued support of marketing freedom for Western Canada’s hard-working farmers.

NATURAL RESOURCES As Chair of the Standing Committee on Natural Resources, I am fortunate to hear,

first-hand, of the rapid and exciting development of Canada’s energy sector.

This year, our Committee completed a study on the economic and human benefits of the oil and gas industry in communities across Canada, including direct benefits to communities from companies that are active in the area. We wanted to learn of the widespread economic and social benefits of extraction and production, including those that we may have never heard before.

Our study broke down the myth that it is only the West that benefits from the direct and indirect effects of oil and gas.

After hearing from dozens of witnesses from every corner of the country – from mayors, to small-business owners – it is clear that these projects bring families together; help to build vital community infrastructure; support manufacturing and construction jobs across Canada; and add to our tax base to fund health care, education and other social programs. It is also clear that Canada has an opportunity to develop our resources in a way that benefits families and communities of all sizes and all economic backgrounds.

Canada’s natural resource sector provides an estimated 1.8 Million jobs in Canada from Nanaimo, BC to Iqaluit to St. John, NL and the oil and gas industry provides government with $22 billion in revenue every year. That’s why our government is committed to promote nation-building projects like the Keystone XL Pipeline, the Energy East Pipeline, and the Northern Gateway Pipeline.

As we heard time and again at Committee, the impacts of these projects are no longer contained to the region in which they are built and operate. These projects mean jobs and growth for Canadians from the Maritimes to the Yukon. Our Government will always welcome safe and environmentally-responsible projects that support jobs, economic growth and prosperity today and for decades to come.

STANDING WITH OUR VETERANS 2014 marked several milestones in our nation’s military history. From officially welcoming our troops home from Afghanistan on the first National Day of Honour, the 70th anniversary of D-day, the 100thanniversary of the beginning of WWI to the 75th anniversary of Canada’s engagement in WWII, 2014 marks a year

of stark humility and appreciation for our Veterans. I was honored to participate in numerous events in the riding for these milestones of remembrance, including a ceremony at CFB Wainwright for our Afghanistan troops. Along with the events that unfolded on Parliament Hill on October 22nd, this year has reminded me more than ever just how often we take freedom, safety and democracy for granted in Canada.

Veterans are generally very happy with how our Government has treated them. It is a few Veterans and some political partisans in the Legion National Office who are speaking out. We have done all we can to answer to the concerns of these Veterans.

It is with this established understanding and appreciation for Veterans that our Government has increased investments in Veterans benefits by nearly $5 billion since coming to office. Under Economic Action Plan 2014, $2.1 million will be allocated to improve the administration of Veteran services by providing enhanced web-based tools that will give Veterans and their families better access to essential services and the Veterans Affairs Canada Department on a 24/7 basis, anywhere in the world. This year we also introduced Bill C-11, Priority Hiring for Injured Veterans Act that once passed, will give all Veterans who served at least three years in the armed forces priority consideration in the hiring process for public service jobs. Furthermore, our Government has recently announced an investment of $200 million for education, treatment, providing greater support to families, and to better harnessing technology and research that will lead to world class care and treatment for mental illness and injury. Soldiers currently serving also have access to reliable mental health support services. In fact, when compared to our NATO allies, the Canadian Forces already has the highest ratio of mental health care workers to soldiers.

We will continue to ensure that our Veterans get the very best.

In review, 2014 was a year filled with ac complishments and unexpected events. Of course, our work is not finished, and my colleagues and I will continue to focus on getting results for all Canadians in 2015. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas, and a safe and happy New Year.

This week’s editorial is going to be a short one, as there hasn’t been much news on the go this week.

Our columnists who are so diligent about sending in their weekly column, we appreciate your hard work and dedication. The submissions we get from the schools which helps keep us all up to date and of course our advertisers. We Thank You. It is our hope that our paper continues into the new year with the success that it has seen over the last ten years and it is our plan to cover as many

local events as possible. Your events are what make our paper what it is, so please let us know when you have a event coming up so we can make sure we are there.

We are working hard to deliver a top notch newspaper which holds our community and the communities in which it serves with the utmost respect and accuracy.

While I know there has been some hiccups in the past about placement of articles, names being mixed up and other issues which are sometimes out of our control as a newspaper, we will

be doing our best in 2015 to rectify any issues which may arise, we want and appreciate feedback from our community on how we are doing whether it is praise or constructive criticism.

Improving Awareness Of Health Care Kalyna Country PCN Submitted

In the first month since launching, the Facebook page of Kalyna Countr y PCN (KCPCN) (http://Facebook. com/KalynaCountryPCN) has reached close to 7,000 people in Canada, and 4,000 Albertans. “We’re happy to be reaching so many people via social media,” said Brian Match, the Executive Director. As well, close to 700 people in Vegreville saw the posts from KCPCN, over 400 in Viking, over 300 in Vermilion and over 100 in Killam.

(See backgrounder for more info). The results show that KCPCN’s efforts are being well received, as important milestones, such as reaching 100 likes, happened faster than normal or than

expected.

Brian Match went on to say, “As part of being our patients’ medical home, open communication is very important to Kalyna Countr y PCN. Facebook gives us another way to dialogue with the people whom we already serve, as well as prospective clients, staff and other stakeholders. Everyone’s health is improved when we can spread the word on our great success stories, i m p o r t a n t h e at h - r e l ate d u p d ate s , workshops and other events.”

Kalyna Country PCN is looking at expanding into Twitter in the future.

T h e r e’s a n ew video calling out for those of weak mind and twisted hearts to follow the lead of fools who have gone before them. The lost soul appearing in the video calls for more mayhem, more harm, more destruction of lives. The news reports identify him, though I will not take up any of my allotted space here for his name. I haven’t yet viewed the video and I might not either, even though I count myself very much among those who attempt to keep informed. His kind of message is unlikely to hold anything I wish to allow into my psyche.

Impact. The information we intake, the activities in which we choose to take part, the language we use, the scenes we view----all of it embeds itself within us.

We have a personal responsibility to take care. We’re fortunate to reside in a relatively free world. But no one ever claimed “free” translates into only

Filters messages of goodness or value. Concept Freedom. Can you taste those words?

They must feel like a great gulp of fresh air to people coming to Canada from places where the tenets of living dictate adherence to more constrictive guidelines.

Holler out whatever you want (almost) in Canada. People will hear you. You, me, everyone has a voice. And no matter whether we choose to use it to advocate truth or compassion or peace or lies or fear or hatred or violence, whether the breath we expel with our words is fresh peppermint or rotted goat cheese halitosis, someone always hears us. And responds.

I’m a believer in free speech, I am.

I’m a great gatherer of information, too.

I want to know. I thrive on learning about what I’ve never before encountered. One of my greatest fears, if it can be considered a fear, is that I won’t live long enough to explore all the places and things that interest and fascinate me but which I have yet to see, read about, visit, attempt to understand. I’m a believer in knowledge.

I’m a believer in each person’s right

to express what it is that counts, according to his or her own personal guide. It’s partly what makes this corner of the world so inspiring and so beloved. Each of us matters. Each one of our voices has an inherent right to be heard, no matter what the message or its impetus.

I’m a believer in free speech. I’ve been repeating that statement to myself a lot lately, both to affirm it and to question it.

I might be changing my mind a little. The French writer, Voltaire, is often credited with the definitive statement in defence of free speech, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Scholars now attribute the quote to another writer, Evelyn Beatrice Hall, but no matter who penned it, the strength of the statement stands. How far would you go to defend free speech? Where is the line that you would refuse to cross, if you perceive that such a line exists?

W o r d s h o l d r e a l p o w e r. T h e i r messages unquestionably affect and change us. They inspire and degrade, absolve and misguide. They may grant permission, enrage, or comfort and calm

us. If we understand how profoundly we are affected by the messages we allow ourselves to hear, we understand too the import of maintaining balance. We understand that it’s necessary to shield ourselves from the preponderance of incoming trash delivered by venomous fools who seek only to harm us and promote chaos. We understand the necessity for a counter, an intake of real knowledge, a greater awareness and appreciation of quality worthy of our attention. Worthy of our esteem.

There are things I don’t want to know, but I feel in order to better understand my world, I must seek out anyway. I recognize, though, that knowledge once acquired cannot be returned. And so, I am discerning.

This week I’ll begin reading a new book.

Two choices lay before me: Dirty Wars and Saved by a Poem. Each explores vastly different territory. Both pique my interest. I’ve decided, in this moment, to read the latter first. Fragility before Fracture.

Welcome Katelyn Ellis Katie Ryan, Lakeland College Submitted

Though Katelyn Ellis says there is a bit of a learning curve ahead of her, it does not temper her excitement for her new position with Lakeland College.

Ellis is Lakeland’s new equine and rodeo manager. She joined the college on Monday, November 24 and is quickly settling into her new role.

“It’s been a good start – a lot to take in and learn but I am starting to sort everything out,” says Ellis, who grew up on her family’s ranch near Sonningdale, Saskatchewan and previously worked with the Saskatchewan Pasture Program.

“I enjoy rodeo and teaching, so when I saw the opening for this position I knew this would be a good opportunity.”

As a 2014 graduate of the Laramie County Community College (LCCC) in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Ellis has associ-

ate degrees in both applied sciences and general studies - AAS radiography. She attended LCCC on a full rodeo scholarship where she competed in rodeo events such as goats, breakaway roping, team roping and barrels, was LCCC’s rodeo team captain and depending on the event was a top 10 to 15 finalist in regional standings.

Ellis continues to compete in many rodeos and jackpots. And now Ellis is looking forward to sharing her experience, skills and knowledge with Lakeland students.

“Lakeland has a pretty active club. You can meet a lot of people being part of something like the Rodeo Club and it can make college quite enjoyable,” says Ellis.

“For me, I know my skills improved with the coaching I received and I learned from other students on the team. You feel like you’re part of something too. It’s a growing and learning experience being part of a team. It makes you better once you are

done.”

Together, the Rodeo Club and Team boasts 50 members who practice regularly each week to improve their skills.

Members are winding down their activities now for the holidays.

“Next semester we’ll practice until the rodeos start in March,” says Ellis.

In the new year, Ellis says she’ll work to enhance the program, provide support to students and create new learning opportunities where she can.

“I would like to plan a few fun rodeos and organize clinics for roping and other activities,” Ellis says.

“Definitely one thing that I would like to assist students with is their mental game and that preparation. A lot of kids may be very good in a practice pen but may not be able to handle it once they are under pressure competing. That’s one important skill we’ll work on in the future once I have seen them in action.”

The Vermilion Valley Lodge hosted a traditional Christmas concer t on December 23. At the beginning of the concert, everyone in attendance was invited to sing traditional Christmas carols together with Ralph Wilson who conducted and Emily Anderson who played the piano.

Ever yone was invited to recite a

Anderson read the poem “Twas the Night Before Jesus Came” followed by a recital of the passage from Luke that tells the story of the angel who announced the Saviour’s birth and a discussion about why we celebrate Christmas.

To finish up, everyone was invited to take home a traditional paper bag of peanuts.

Remember The Reason For The Season Ralph Wilson not only led the crowd in singing the familiar Christmas carols, but reminded everyone that Jesus is the reason for the season. Photos Nicole Crossan.

Lakeland’s Christmas Giving Challenge Thank you to everyone who participated in Lakeland’s Christmas Giving Challenge! The Lakeland team was challenged to create 28 stockings/gift bags for the Lloydminster Men’s Shelter. Our Trades Department rose to the challenge with 16 gift bags. Thank you to all the departments, individuals, and families who were so generous! In total, Lakeland provided the following to the Lloydminster Men’s Shelter: 32 gift bags, so each resident plus some of their former residents who are transitioning to independent living in Gibney House will each have a gift to open on Christmas morning, plus extra socks and toiletry items, etc. A staff member also donated her husband’s DVD collection. In the good old d ays, just kee ping in touch was a good deal more than finding your cell phone or firing up the pickup and heading for town and the local coffee shop, you think?

I can remember the time when folks would ride for miles to reach our place to use our phone to get help or information for a sick family member that was too sick to move in cold wintertime. It happened often times in bad weather. Not a good situation.

Now you can phone for help with your cell phone and get rescued from a mountain top or where ever. Think of the hardship of the cold distance to get to your post of fice to get or even send a letter to keep in touch.

It was more than a little trouble and effort, especially in the winter. People would brave the roads with a team and sleigh or saddle horse to take

in whatever function was happening, whether it was a whist drive, Christmas concert, or maybe even a dance in the schoolhouse. Just going to visit a neighbor was a big deal that did take some planning to achieve between the morning and evening chores and get home before the house froze up.

We certainly wouldn’t have to worry like that now, would we? I remember the joy in the house when someone would come and put their horses in the barn and visit until the late hours.

I can’t even imagine that now - riding home in the cold, dark mostly because folks just wanted to keep in touch. That urge was certainly real and so was the loneliness of the enforced isolation that occurred in those times.

We had a radio and a telephone, w h i c h wa s n’ t o r d i n ar y b a c k t h e n.

Really, we were so for tunate. Folks would come to listen to the news of how World War II was affecting everyone and the phone would ring. They also asked if we’d heard the latest reports.

We were for tunate that the lit tle Tolland Store and Post Office were only a mile or so away. Many neighbours had several hours of travel to reach that store. A trip to town was a two day affair. One day got you to town and hopefully lef t some time to do business or trade your fur like my Dad did. You left your team in the liver y stable and the next day you finished your business and hopefully could find your way home before it got too dark.

Keep in mind, it was most often winter when this occurred and Dad was lucky he had mom home to keep the home fire burning and us kids safe.

It was an exciting time when he got home and told us about seeing all the folks in town and him telling us about all the goings on all around us.

In the summertime it was still hard to travel, especially if it rained when you were in town. Saturday was town day and nearly everyone would try to make town to shop and perhaps take in a movie. Of course you talked and visited all the time and kept in touch as

they would say.

Another great gathering was the start of church when a student minister would arrive and start church about the first of May. Seemed like almost everyone came to church as a way to visit the neighbours. The school yard would be full of rigs of buggies and horse drawn wagons, probably more than any kind of motor vehicle.

Then came the picnics and ball tournaments. All the neighbouring communities put them on, so we spent lots of time playing ball. Great fun and we usually had a lot of spectators to cheer us on. Yes, despite the difficulty of travel in cold weather, people did keep in touch even in those times. Neighbours helped each other and spent more time visiting eac h other too.

Later on, we curled and had bonspiels, but the roads were a lot kinder then.

I think with the ease of communication and travel now people don’t rely on each other quite the same as we did in earlier times. I think that ’s a shame!

Cost Containment Measures To Help Alberta Weather Economic Storm Dr. Richard Starke MLA Vermilion-Lloydminster Constituency Submitted

For weeks now, we’ve seen oil prices continue to drop. This has all of us in government concerned from a revenue perspective. Non-renewable resource revenue accounts for about 21 per cent of total revenue for our province. Bitumen and conventional oil royalties make up about 80 per cent of that.

Simply put, this means that for every $1 per barrel drop in the price of Alberta’s oil over 12 months, we receive $215 million less in revenue. To put that in perspective, for every dollar drop, we lose the equivalent revenue of about half the annual budget of the Municipal Affairs ministry.

There’s not much we can do to affect global oil prices, but there are certainly things we can do to address the spending side of the equation. Premier Prentice

and Minister of Finance Robin Campbell have announced that the Alberta government is implementing cost containment measures for the remainder of 2014-15 fiscal year. This includes a hiring restraint initiative to limit any growth in overall staffing costs. We’re exercising similar restraint in spending related to discretionary grants, travel, training and other related costs.

In this time of caution, we must be prudent in our spending by applying an extra level of scrutiny to every dollar spent. We’re focusing on the “needs” – not the “wants”. For example, hiring may still occur for positions that are critical to government operations and/or provide frontline services to Albertans.

Our expectation is that all significant government-funded agencies, boards, commissions and the SUCH sector (Schools, Universities, Colleges and health authorities) will adopt similar cost

containment measures.

It’s expected that oil prices will be low for some time. To help address these and other concerns leading up to Budget 2015, Premier Jim Prentice will be leading a seven-member committee made up of Cabinet members that will look at economic projections, capital and operating budgets, policy commitments, and revenue forecasts. It will make recommendations to Treasury Board leading up to next year’s budget.

By reining in unnecessary spending and applying a critical look at all expenses, Alberta will ride out this economic storm.

Warm Fuzzies, Ethnic Foods, Skating And More The Student Council at St. Jerome’s School had a busy week from December 15 to 19. On Monday it was pajama day and bring your own mug for hot chocolate and coffee day. On Tuesday it was Christmas hat day. Wednesday was Christmas colours day where students wore red, green, and tacky Christmas sweaters. Thursday was Elf Day, a day when the students cooked breakfast for their teachers and random acts of kindness were performed throughout the day. Their last day of school before Christmas break, Friday, was when they had an ethnic lunch buffet, shared warm fuzzies and went to the arena for skating activities.

To explain what Warm Fuzzy day is at St. Jerome’s, the student council makes a ball of wool with one loose string that goes around each student’s neck. Participating students exchanged a piece of string pulled from the ball of wool, then wished each other Merry Christmas and gave each other a hug and those who participate are given school spirit points. Vermilion Celebrates New Year With Fun Family Event (January 6 Issue) The Vermilion Family New Year’s Eve Party, the second in as many years, was hosted by the Vermilion Regional Centre. Once again, it proved to be a success as a number of families and individuals braved the minus 30 temperature for an evening of dancing, visiting and activities for all ages. The event was held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on December 31 and volunteer, Colleen Symes, said although there were not very many advance tickets sold, they were expecting a great turnout for the event. There were a number of activities to keep the younger celebrators in the crowd busy including a child-friendly bar serving non-alcoholic beverages and goodies.

Vermilion Celebrates Malanka 2014 (January 13 Issue) The Vermilion Ukrainian Dancers graced the stage to a sold out crowd at the Regional Centre on January 11 as the Ukrainian Culture of Vermilion celebrated Malanka, Ukrainian New Year’s Eve. Members of the Senior dancers performed two dances at the annual Malanka held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on January 11. The group’s dancers are Nicole Frankiw, Kirsten Evans, Quinn Hlus, Kennedy Radesh, Glenn Venance, Donovan Yaceyko and Braydon Drury.

Alberta Opera Entertains Vermilion Students (February 3 Issue) The Alberta Opera Touring Association paid a visit to the Vermilion area on January 27, as a few select students were given the opportunity to participate in the presentation of “Aladdin.” The opera company, based out of Edmonton, works to maintain a tradition of presenting live musical theatre to students throughout the province of Alberta. Lakeland College President Settles Into Her Position (February 3 Issue) Lakeland College’s first female President, Dr. Tracy Edwards, proudly displays an eagle feather on her Lakeland College office wall. The feather was a gift to her from the Blackfoot Elders of the Lethbridge area, a symbol of appreciation for her contribution in establishing a positive connection between the Blackfoot First Nations and Lethbridge College. Dr. Edwards resigned from her position as President later that year to pursue other interests.

Mannville Visited By CFCW Critters (February 24 Issue) The Mannville Arena was packed with hockey fans on February 20 as the CFCW Critters travelled to the Village for another one of their Goodwill hockey tour events, taking on the Buffalo Coulee Sabres. With only a $5 charge at the door, spectators definitely got their money’s worth of entertainment. Local minor hockey player, Zack Polishuk was chosen as the guest Critter for the game and did not let the team down, scoring six goals and three assists.

Vermilion Voice Year In Review

200 Apprenticeship Seats Added (March 10 Issue) Alberta will need to replace as many as 45,000 wor ker s over t he nex t decade, according to the 2014-2023 Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward Forecast released recently by BuildForce Canada. To keep up with industry demand Lakeland College will increase the number of seats available for apprenticeship students. For the 201415 academic year, more than 200 new seats have been allocated to Lakeland

by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry and Training (AIT). The increase is fairly evenly distributed across the college’s nine apprenticeship program areas. John Klatt, chair of Lakeland’s school of trades and technology, is enthusiastic about the increase that will bump Lakeland’s total apprenticeship numbers to 1,548. But that kind of growth does come with challenges says Klatt. “It will increase the requirement for instructors, as well as, space and equipment. Classroom space is a fairly easy fix, but specialized labs and equipment are more challenging,” he says.

Vermilion Cadets Honour 100 Years For PPCLI (April 7 Issue) In honour of the 100th anniversary of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), the 2645 Loyal Edmonton Regiment Cadet Corp of Vermilion were presented with a PPCLI flag which will fly atop the Lt. Col. W.C. Craig Armory in Vermilion. In a special ceremony held on April 1 at the Armory, Officers and dignitaries were in attendance for the official presentation of the flag to the cadet corp.

Vermilion Voice Year In Review J.R. Robson Teachers Help End Polio (March 17 Issue) Even the teachers of J.R. Robson school took part in the Rotary Club’s Purple Pinkie Day held on March 14. The club visited each of the three schools in Vermilion to help raise money for the eradication of Poliomyelitis (Polio), a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to paralysis, breathing problems, and in some cases, even death. Teaching assistant and school correspondent for The Voice, Shawna Craig had her pinky finger temporarily dyed purple by Rotary President Brenda Lee, in support of the fundraiser.

Hosted by the Town or Vermilion and The Goodlife Institute, the Ball is designed to officially honour the Police Services, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance and COPS programs. Members of the RCMP, Fire And Rescue and Ambulance in attendance posed for a photo outside the second annual Protector’s Ball.

Methane Leak Has Brennan Residents Concerned (April 28 Issue) It appears that an old, abandoned gas well, proven to be leaking, has a number of residents in the Brennan subdivision concerned as they say efforts to resolve the leak are slow and non-progressive. The well in question sits adjacent to a home and also sits right next to a children’s playground.

The well is clearly marked as dangerous and is completely fenced-off. According to the Abandoned Well Association, Tenwell No. 1 was drilled in 1935 by the former Tenwell Gas & Oil Company and at the time of drilling, the well did not show any strong promise of oil or gas and was abandoned in 1942.

Vermilion Voice Year In Review Construction For A New Co-op Grocery Store Begins (June 9 Issue) The machines moved in to start breaking ground for the new Eastalta Co-op food store being built just east of its current store at 5015 - 51 Avenue in Vermilion.

The announcement of the construction was made back on September 5, 2013 and the designs revealed a modernlooking 33,000 square foot building for Co-op shoppers to look forward to.

Crews began removing the pavement and cement from the former parking lot the week of June 9 and the construction is hoped to be complete by March of 2015.

Lea Park Action Wows Crowds At 60th Annual Rodeo (June 9 Issue) The weather cleared just in time for the Lea Park Rodeo committee to hold its 60th annual event in the picturesque coulee north of Marwayne. The Friday night performance got underway on time as crews worked frantically the previous days to ensure the arena ground would be in the best condition possible for the cowboys and cowgirls to ride in. Committee member Rick Hozack, said even with the inch and a half of rain that fell on the rodeo grounds the Thursday before the rodeo, the arena floor was in good condition for the event. The committee has been working on conditioning the arena floor twice per week throughout the year, to help maintain an optimal base for the rodeo.

Holiday Check Stops Constables from the Ve r m i l i o n R C M P h a d several holiday check stops to discourage people from drinking and driving. The RCMP c o m m e nte d t h at t h ey would like to raise awareness about some of the problems that cause people to get ti c kets.

Driving while impaired, having open alcohol in the vehicle or transporting alcohol from one location to an ot her in a p l ac e where it can be reached by drivers and/or passengers could result in a fine. Although impaired driving was the main focus of these check stops, other issues also arose such as people who were driving without insurance or the incorrect insurance slip in their vehicle and people who had forgotten to renew their driver’s license before it expired. People can be fined or asked to make a court appearance for not having their driver’s license, insurance, and registration up-to-date and present in the vehicle at a check stop. As a positive, outgoing eight year old, Brenden demonstrates everyday, in our classroom and out on the playground, how to be a kind, hardworking, responsible boy. Regardless of any challenges he may encounter throughout the day, Brenden always tries his best by putting great effort into all of his schoolwork, resulting in excellent academic achievement. He never complains when working even on tedious tasks.

Amongst his peers, Brenden is a welcomed friend who plays fair, is happy to play whatever the group is playing and models positive play skills with all age groups. International Interest In Lakeland College Programs Katie Ryan Submitted

Lakleland College’s Animal Health Technology (AHT) Diploma is garnering international interest. The program currently has two international students – o n e a for m er p o li c e of fi c er an d another a former opera singer – who are excelling in their studies and are eager to practice what they’ve learned.

The last few months have been filled with firsts for Abigail Ugalde. It is her first time in Canada; first time working with large animals; and first time experiencing a northern winter.

Before enrolling at Lakeland College, Ugalde studied veterinary medicine, worked with the Philippine National Police Special Action Force-K9 Unit in the bomb squad and also obtained her Bachelor of Science in Criminology.

Interested in travelling to Canada and ready for a new challenge, Ugalde discovered Lakeland College online.

And while she had never heard of Vermilion, Ugalde said she was glad she moved to further her education. “ My instructors are great, I think L a ke l a n d i s t h e b e s t p l a c e ” s ay s Ugalde, who arrived in Canada from the Philippines in August. “It’s nice and I really like it.”

The first-year student enjoys her classmates, likes living in residence and is excited about her AHT classes, even with the exams she needs to complete before the semester comes to an end. Ugalde said she values the hands-on training she’s receiving from her clinical training, especially on Tuesdays, which is her favourite day of the week.

“Surgery in the morning and animal bre e d s an d b e h av i or i n t h e af ternoon,” she says with a laugh, adding that sheep and cattle are her favourite animals to work with.

Though Ugalde won’t graduate until next year, she is already planning for the future. Working as an animal health technologist in a clinic and even teaching, which would make one of her grandmother’s dreams come true, are Ugalde’s long-term ambitions. “ My goals are to share what I’ve learned here at Lakeland with my country especially with the law enforcement involved in countering terrorism with the aid of our working dogs. I would like to participate in promoting public health and safety,” Ugalde says.

Fellow international student, Lia Castruita, is also on her way to achieving her goals with the AHT program. In her second and final year, Castruita is working hard towards her spring graduation.

“Every day there is something new to learn,” says Castruita. “All of the instructors are great. They know what

they are teaching but the most important thing is that they really care. When we are in the labs they are taking care of the animals but they are also taking care of us at the same time and that is amazing.”

Before Castruita moved to Canada from Mexico City, she performed as an opera singer for 20 years. It was a profession she enjoyed immensely and then she met Fran – the Jack Russell Terrier who rekindled her passion for animals.

Gaining valuable clinical experience has been a highlight for Castruita. It’s where she’s learning to prepare for actual surgeries, collect and analyze samples for diagnosis, take X-rays and other key lab skills. “ The most enjoyable par t of the pro gram is when you c an help an animal, when you are in the lab and you can do something for them. When you can put an injection or a vaccine in them, or when you find something in

good use in a clinic first before continuing her work with service dogs. “ I am ver y glad that I am here,” Castruita says smiling.

Evelyn Clark Wins Evelyn Clark of Vermilion won the grand prize for the final Candy Cane Countdown draw made by the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce. Clark almost didn’t believe the phone call was real because she has only ever won a turkey at a turkey bingo before. She was still having a difficult time believing she had won $2,000 in Chamber Bucks after the prize was presented to her at the Chamber office on December 23. Robert Ernst pointed out that winning the early bird and grand prize draws each year gives local people one more reason to shop in Vermilion and that is exactly what the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce is encouraging people to do. Not enough people know that every little bit helps, Ernst pointed out, meaning even if 100 people spend ten or twenty dollars each, that little bit can keep a unique, established, local business from closing its doors. There are other advantages to shopping in Vermilion as well, Ernst added, unlike shopping on the internet where people are frequently scammed, people who shop local know what they’re getting before they buy it. There is also the difference in customer service and relationship building. Here in Vermilion the same person who helped you get your farm machinery running during harvest time could be the same person who coaches your children in hockey.
