Babushka Finds Peace

The stage curtains of the Alumni Theatre had silver stars dangling from each one backed by a silver nativity display at the Babushka play put on by the Grade 1 and 2 VES classes on December 10.

Narrators Owen Aitken and Hailey Roach took to the left side of the stage as the members of the choir stood in the background of center stage singing and acting out songs.

The right side of the stage was “Babushka’s house” with Babushka, cleaning tool in hand, as its perpetual house cleaner. Some

A party for Bauer will take place at the Regional Centre at 5 p.m. on December 20 and all whose lives have been touched by Mrs. Bauer are invited to attend. Guests are asked to bring a potluck dish and dancing shoes.

of the visitors to her dwelling included a star, mice, spiders, flies, angels, kings and camels, yet all were whisked away like dust on the mantelpiece.

By the end of the play Babushka found peace and forgot about dust and dirt. She apologized to the three kings and their camels for how she treated them when they came to visit her and the choir reminded her that everything we give, say, and do is a gift to Jesus because Jesus is full of pure love.

The Babushka play ended with the message that the most important part of life is how we show love for one another rather than external appearances.

Babushka found peace when she heard the Christmas message and got to hold the Christ child.

Babushka scared the three camels, Tehya Gould, Danielle Archibald and Kaydence Gumulcak away when she asked them to clean their hooves.

Grade 6 Hand Bell Choir The VES Grade 1 and 2 Christmas concert on December 10 began with a performance by the Grade 6 Hand Bell Choir. Bauer congratulated them and their parents on diligently attending every afterschool practice since September. They did a flawless performance of Jingle Bells, Up On the House Top, The Russian Dance, Jolly Old St. Nicholas and The Little Drummer Boy. Photo Nicole Crossan.

Christmas Characters Concert Nicole Crossan Reporter

The VES Grade 3 to 5 concert took place on December 11 at the Alumni Theatre which began with “A Wiggly Christmas Medley” of songs sung by all the grades followed by each grade performing separate songs.

The Grade 3 classes began with children ringing bells to proclaim Jesus’ birthday and then sang “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

The Grade 4 classes were next and they sang about work and play to get things ready for Christmas and “Santa’s

Solar Sleigh.”

Then the Grade 5 classes did a per for man c e ab out “ Domini c k the Donkey” and “The Little Drummer Boy.” At the end, all the children returned to the stage and sang a “Jolly Jingle Christmas Medley,” which the crowd was invited to join in singing because it contained many traditional Christmas favourites.

The grand finale was a song that was previously performed at the VES Remembrance Day ceremony, but spoke of the spirit of love and giving.

This was a very fitting song for a Christmas theme as well.

Love One Another The grand finale performance was a song that used sign language during the chorus. This is a photo of them doing the sign language to say, “We must love one another.”

The Vermilion 4H Sheep club held its regular monthly meeting on December 5.

Reports were given by members that have been elected to positions. Members reviewed what needed be done for the upcoming volleyball tournament.

December 27 was the date chosen for our Christmas party to be held out at the Lawrence farm.

The Vermilion River 4H District Volleyball Tournament was again hosted by the Vermilion 4H Sheep Club on December 7 at JR Robson School. 15 clubs from the area sent 20 teams to compete, which totaled 142 members. Clubs that travelled to the tournament were Elk Point Beef, Elk Point Multi, Kitscoty Beef, Three Cities Multi (from Paradise Valley), Clandonald Multi, Hidden Creek Multi (from Lloydminster), Vegreville Beef, Innisfree-Minburn Beef, Irma Beef, Vegreville Multi, as well as our local Beef, Light Horse, Outdoors, Baking and Sheep clubs.

The gold medal was won by Irma Beef, silver went to Vermilion Light Horse and bronze was won by Vegreville Multi Club beating out the Vermilion Sheep Club in a playoff.

4H VB Tournament Kaelem Westergaard carrying Hunter Krips had a great time at the tournament.

Michaela Westergaard was among those who assisted throughout the day keeping score for all the games.

RCMP Reports purchases out of sight. Be aware of the possibility of scams and identity theft; protect your PINs and credit card numbers. If you are going to be out of town for any length of time consider the following: Secure your home and any outbuildings, vehicles, campers, etc. before leaving.

Have someone keep the driveway and walkways clear of snow as this will keep the house looking lived in.

Have someone pick up any newspapers or flyers, put out the trash bin, etc.

Replace any burned out yard/entry lights and set a few lights in your home on timers.

Make sure that any firearms, passports and other valuables are locked up.

Let a trusted neighbour know how long you will be gone and have them check on the home. Should they or you

find that your house has been broken into, do not touch anything and do not enter the house. Call the RCMP and wait someplace safe for a member to arrive.

While none of these steps will guarantee you won’t find yourself the victim of a property crime, they will reduce the risk and increase the chances that any crimes will be detected early.

Santa Comes In Different Ways

Te n d ays u n t i l Christmas Eve and the excitem e nt i s s h ow i n g all over the faces of little children. Every store you go in you can hear a child speaking about Santa Claus and the gifts he is going to be bringing them.

Who is Santa Claus? Well the Santa we have come to know was derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, whose name is a dialectal pronunciation of Saint Nicholas, the historical Greek bishop and gift - giver of Myra. During the Christianization of Ger mani c Euro pe, this figure may have absorbed elements of the god Odin, who was associated with the Germanic pagan midwinter event of Yule, according to wikipedia.org.

All in all, the Santa Claus we know is much different. He is a pot-bellied, jolly old man dressed in red, and living

in the nor th pole with Mr s. Claus, elves and reindeer. He comes to visit most of the boys and girls of the world on Christmas eve with a sleigh full of toys and magically comes down our chimneys to deliver us toys and fill our stockings.

Santa Claus has always been a figure which parents have used to help keep their children in line all year round and in many cases it does help.

I can remember as a child having the “Santa is watching you,” used to help keep me in line, or the, “you know if you are not a good girl Santa will bring you a lump of coal for your stocking instead of goodies and gif ts.” I must say it’s a very good strategy for parents, as no child ever wants to end up on Santa’s naughty list.

O f c our se a s we grow o l d er we begin to have questions about Santa’s authenti c it y and beg in ask ing our parents if there really is a Santa Claus?

If so how does this happen and that happen? Like coming down a chimney when we don’t have a chimney? Or

how does he make reindeer fly? and how does he get all around the world in one night? I had asked these questions many times and every time I got the same answers. It’s magic my dear.

If you don’t have a chimney and fireplace Santa makes one, the reindeer fly because of the magic of the season and as for the getting around the world in one night, he flies very fast, so fast you can’t even see him.

In my household, there was a pretty simple fact about Santa Claus, which was expressed to me when I was about ten years old, and foolish enough to sit upon my Grandfather’s knee and ask if Santa is really real? The answer which I received was simple and to the point, if you stop believing in Santa, then Santa stops coming to you. That was good enough for me and I whole heartedly kept believing even when my friends made fun of me.

While we don’t see the magic of Santa Claus in real life, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The question of whether or not the pot- bellied Santa

is real or not, I don’t think is the real question. As we get older our beliefs change, but the magic of Santa still lives on in our hearts, we all want to believe in Santa and the magic which surrounds his persona. Even now as I watch Christmas movies and see the magic within them, I want to believe it’s real.

I think Santa comes in many shapes and forms with the compassion and caring behaviour of people around us.

Gifts do not have to be in the physical sense of a present. A caring and h e l p i n g h a n d or a l ov i n g s m il e to someone who is feeling all alone can be the ultimate gift during the season.

So when your child asks you if there is any such thing as Santa Claus, take them upon your knee and keep their belief alive for as long as possible, teach them to give a helping hand, teach them that sometimes the greatest gift is giving not receiving. Help another child keep the faith by passing along the magic of Christmas.

Dear Editor, Liberal MP Ralph Goodale is once again spreading factually incorrect information about our Government’s Family Tax Cut. The facts are clear. Every family with children in Canada will stand to benefit from our latest tax breaks –including single parents. The Universal Child Care Benefit has been increased and expanded to nearly $2,000 per year for every child under 6, and $720 per year for every child between 6 and 17. In addition, the Family Tax Cut corrects a longstanding injustice in Canada’s tax code whereby two families earning the same total income pay different amounts in taxes, depending on who earns that income. The Cut will allow for the transfer of up to $50,000 of taxable income to a spouse in a lower tax bracket for couples with children under the age of 18. Contrary to the false claims of the Liberals, these measures benefit one hundred per cent of families with children.

I want to point out some specific statistics based on these new initiatives: two-thirds of the benefits flow to low-and-middle income families; fami-

lies earning less than $30K will receive an average benefit of $1,218; a single parent with two children earning $30,000 receives $1,524 per year; a two income family with two kids where the mother earns $48K and the father earns $12K will receive a benefit of $1,186 – 36 per cent of their federal tax bill; and a single parent making $50K with two kids will see $986 in relief and benefits.

The average tax relief and benefi t s for a g i ve n fa m il y fr o m t h e s e new m easures s h oul d tot al a b out $1,140 next year. Included with previous tax-relief measures introduced by our Government since 2006, these new initiatives will result in $4,500 worth of total savings for an average Canadian family. It’s no wonder why our efforts to improve the middle class are being recognized internationally, with the New York Times reporting that Canada’s thriving middle class is now the “richest in the world.” With a balanced budget on the horizon, our Conservative Government is committed to helping families balance theirs, even without the support of Mr. Goodale and the Liberals.

I’m enjoying the temperatures in the pluses for midDecember. I am just hoping it doesn’t thaw out that flu bug that is sneaking around. Maybe I will take the time to go get the free shot.

This past weekend wasn’t all that bad, but it would have been nicer if the wind was mellow. However, it was refreshing as I was cutting firewood again; we were getting a little low.

When the wife star ts tossing the kitchen hardwood chairs in the fireplace I can take a hint. It was good to get out in the fresh air that truly was “fresh” and I needed the exercise. Like hunting, it gives me a lot of time to think.

I was “somewhat down in the dumps” about that little kitten “Dew” I wrote about.

The one that picked me out of the litter.

He passed away last week after fighting a stomach infection, which we thought was something totally different. After a trip to the vet and a lot of care, we thought he was ‘dew’-ing very well. I got up one morning and he was always there to greet me, but on this morning he was nowhere to be seen, so the wife and I, in a panic, looked all over the house for him.

I finally found him lying by the living room coffee table in very bad shape. I sat on the couch holding, comforting and talking to him until his last breath. A big crocodile tear ran down my face as I still held him after he was gone.

I know it’s not the image of a big outdoorsman that many picture, but I was so dang attached to that little guy

Around The Campfire who followed me everywhere, played and needed constant contact just the evening before.

We thought it was Coccidiosis or Coccidia, a disease devastating to kittens, and can be passed on through pigeon droppings. We have had many pigeons living in the old barn.

Adult cats become immune to Coccidia very fast and it doesn’t bother them, however, they then become carriers and the virus is passed thru their droppings also. Kittens pick it up quickly, especially farm kittens and it is very hard on them.

We had “Dew” tested for Coccidia but the test was negative and whatever it was Dew caught, happened in a week then ended quickly.

We have the lone survivor of the litter… little “Boo.” Boo was also looking weak and thin, but with more medicine she is now the puffball Dew was, and just as playful. She is a handful and is strictly an indoor kitty probably until spring now.

I should be busy this coming weekend.

I am getting the ice fishing gear ready as I write this and with the nice weather, I am bound and determined to head out this weekend.

Also, I have APA archery visiting my archery shop for a presentation of the new 2015 bow line-up and new innovations as well as shoot the new bows, something I always look forward to every year.

Letter From Fred Holman Part 3 Franklin Wolters Columnist

Indian Summer That fall we had a b e au t i f u l I n d i a n Summer. What happens-winter comes normally then the weather clears up, the snow goes and it stays fine for a week or so, just great weather. It gets it’s name from the earliest settlers. When the weather was fine, the ‘Indian’ as they were known then, would raid. When the snow flew, they stopped raiding. When summer returned, the Indians returned. Not good news for the settlers.

He had some land across the road from the home place. There was a road from the gate that hadn’t been cropped for years. At the end of the field was a tractor with a set of diamond tooth harrows with the grass and weeds growing around them. ‘Diamond’ from the shape of the iron framework the teeth were bolted into.

On the other side of the field was a small bluff of straggly poplar trees. He decided we would cut it clean, close to the ground and salvage what wood we could and the field

plowed. A day or two later he added, “we will get the tractor going.”

Next thing he makes a trip to town to get spark plugs, wiring, and assorted items and we get down to business. I could hardly believe it. The tractor looked like it belonged on the scrap heap.

Then we got two large-size cream cans sturdily built, about 30 inches tall with two handles near the neck. The round lid, with a handle, fitted snugly into the neck, tamped in with a piece of wood and pried out with a goose-neck bar. People who lived nearer town left them, full of cream, in a stand beside the road to be trucked in to the Vermilion Creamery.

He also had a democrat (not a politician), a vehicle larger than a buggy with room for an extra seat or more cargo space, which we needed. Remember this was not a modern push-button tractor. The event took place in the early thirties and anybody’s guess how old the tractor was. The Democrat was pulled by two horses.

Right after chores finished one morning, we pulled up to the kitchen door with the Democrat with the cream cans in the back.

Whatever the old lady thought of the project, she kept the fire stoked and we filled the cans with hot water. With him driving and

me standing in the back to steady the cans, we headed down the lane at a fast clip.

I sure was holding on tight, let me tell you.

Slowed to pull on to the road, then another burst of speed. Slow again to turn into the field and pull up beside the tractor. He stood on the front wheel and frame of the tractor and I handed him up pails full of hot water for the radiator. As soon as that was done, he wound up a thick, heavy rope, about 12 feet long, around the pulley while I got the team in place to hitch on the end.

I drove the team ahead, it was a real tough slug, if the rope came free and there is no further movement. Well, the engine didn’t fall apart so we kept going. After dinner, another fill of hot water and turning the engine over. At the end of the day, while easier, there was not much sign of life, but the engine was still in one piece, an accomplishment of itself, so we drained the radiator and called it a day. The second day, mostly a repeat of the first. By now, it was all over the country, “Have you heard of old man Wolter and that English kid?”

Anyway, sometime that day when the rope came free the engine turned over a few times by itself. When the rope went slack, the double-tree hit the horses’ heels and I had to hang on to them until the drag

of the rope held the double-trees and the horses caught on and slowed down.

On the other side from the pulley was a big flywheel that helped with the momentum. On the steering column were two levers, one for the gas and one for the spark--advance and retard. At the best of times these were pretty tricky adjustments, at the time it was almost impossible. By the afternoon, the engine would cough and splutter, continue for a few revolutions, then die. By this time, when the rope slacked off the horses eased up a bit, so they didn’t get banged on the heels. So home for chores.

We were feeling pretty optimistic by now, but it was late in the afternoon when the engine came to life and settled down to running steady. The old man just beamed.

He ran it for a while then stopped it and started it by hand a couple of times with a crank on the pulley or flywheel I believe.

I did the cranking. He had the controls to fiddle with.

Then we shut it down, drained the radiator and went home. We did it!

That night it snowed and in the spring I left for other work. As far as I know the tractor was never run again.

Fifth Annual Extravagant Spirit Of Christmas With festive holiday music filling the air at the Innisfree Rec. Centre on Sunday, December 7, the annual Innisfree Extravagant Spirit Of Christmas craft sale and trade show helped shoppers get in the mood of the season and find that unique gift for everyone on their holiday list. Event organizer Maryann Berg, has been hosting the event for five years with donations accepted at the door for local food banks and more than 40 vendors in attendance to show off their various items for sale. T h ere’s a n ew video calling out for those of weak mind and twisted hearts to follow the lead of fools who have gone before them. The lost soul appearing in the video calls for more mayhem, more harm, more destruction of lives. The news reports identify him, though I will not take up any of my allotted space here for his name.

I haven’t yet viewed the video and I might not either, even though I count myself very much among those who attempt to keep informed. His kind of message is unlikely to hold anything I wish to allow into my psyche.

Impact. The information we intake, the activities in which we choose to take part, the language we use, the scenes we view--all of it embeds itself within us.

We have a personal responsibilit y to take care. We’re for tunate to reside in a relatively free world. But no one ever claimed “free” translates into only messages of goodness or value. Concept Freedom. Can you taste those words? They must feel like a great gulp of fresh air to people coming to Canada from places where the tenet s of living d i c t ate ad here n c e t o m o r e c o n s t r i c t i ve g u i d e lines. Holler out whatever you want (almost) in Canada. People will hear

And no matter whether we choose to use it to advocate truth or compassion or peace or lies or fear or hatred or violence, whether the breath we expel with our words is fresh peppermint or rotted goat cheese halitosis, someone always hears us. And responds.

I’m a believer in free speech, I am.

I’m a great gatherer of information, too. I want to know. I thrive on learning about what I’ve never before encountered. One of my greatest fears, if it can be considered a fear, is that I won’t live long enough to explore all the places and things that interest and fascinate me but which I have yet to see, read about, visit, attempt to understand. I’m a believer in knowledge.

I ’m a b e l i eve r i n e a c h p e r s o n’s right to express what it is that counts, according to his or her own personal g ui d e. It ’s par t ly w hat m ake s t hi s corner of the world so inspiring and so beloved. Each of us matters. Each one of our voices has an inherent right to be heard, no matter what the message or its impetus.

I’m a believer in free speech. I’ve b e e n r e p e at i n g t h at s t ate m e n t t o myself a lot lately, both to af firm it and to question it. I might be changing my mind a little. The French writer, Voltaire, is of ten credited with the definitive statement in defence of free speech, “ I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your

right to say it.” Scholars now attribute the quote to another writer, Evelyn B e at r i c e H a l l, b u t n o m at t e r w h o penned it, the strength of the statement stands. How far would you go to defend free speech? Where is the line that you would refuse to cross, if you perceive that such a line exists?

W o r d s h o l d r e a l p o w e r. T h e i r messages unquestionably affect and change us. They inspire and degrade, a b s o l ve a n d m i s g u i d e. T h ey m ay grant permission, enrage, or comfort and calm us. If we understand how profoundly we are af fec ted by the messages we allow ourselves to hear, we understand too the import of maintaining balance. We understand that it’s necessary to shield ourselves from the preponderance of incoming trash

delivered by venomous fools who seek only to harm us and promote chaos.

We understand the necessit y for a counter, an intake of real knowledge, a greater awareness and appreciation of quality worthy of our attention. Worthy of our esteem.

There are things I don’t want to k now, but I feel in or d er to bet ter understand my world, I must seek them out anyway. I recognize, though, that knowledge once acquired cannot be returned. And so, I am discerning.

This week I’ll begin reading a new b o ok . Two c hoi c es lay before me: “Dirty Wars” and “Saved by a Poem.”

Each explores vastly different territory.

Both pique my interest. I’ve decided, in this moment, to read the latter first.

Christmas baking is often part of our holiday traditions.

When I think of traditional Christmas baking I often think of butter tarts, shortbread, mincemeat tarts, gingerbread men, sugar cookies and Christmas pudding.

Attending various community, work and church holiday functions often calls for bringing a pan of squares. Squares have become part of our holiday gettogethers on the prairies.

Often holiday bakers fill their freezer with their holiday baking treats, ready for family and holiday visitors. Here is another great square recipe to add to

The history of the rocky road flavour goes back to the time of the great depression and the stock market crash.

Ice cream sales were lagging way behind. Back then, there were only three flavours of ice cream: vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.

One ice cream company came up with the idea of a new flavour by adding cut up chocolate bars made of walnuts and marshmallows to ice cream and he called his new ice cream, Rocky Road.

He told a friend and fellow ice cream maker of his idea and found that they copied his idea, but slightly changed it by adding walnuts and marshmallows to chocolate ice cream. They also called their new ice cream flavour, Rock y Road.

It’s a name that made people smile during difficult times and the new flavour soon became a favourite that has lasted many decades.

These Rocky Road squares are very easy to make and only take 20 minutes to bake. They taste so good that you may be hard pressed to have just one.

milk Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a bowl combine the graham wafer crumbs and the butter and press into a 9” x 13” pan.

In a bowl combine the miniature marshmallows, the walnuts, the chocolate chips and the coconut and gently stir to combine.

Rocky Road Squares Pour this dry mixture onto the graham 1 1/2 cups graham wafers crumbs wafer crust. Smooth it out to be level.

1/2 cup melted butter Pour the can of sweetened condensed 2 cups miniature marshmallows milk over the dry mixture. I pour it in 1 100gram package of walnut pieces streams going lengthwise, then across or sliced almonds the width of the pan and then diago1 300 gram package of Semi sweet nally until almost all of the dry mixture chocolate chips is covered.

1 20 0 gram package of Medium Bake at 350 degree for 20 minutes.

Unsweetened coconut Cool and slice.

1 can (300 ml) sweetened condensed

The Innisfree Minburn 4H Beef Club held its third meeting on December 3, in Innisfree. For our club’s Christmas party we will be going tobogganing on December 30. On December 7, our club took two teams to the 4H Regional volleyball at J.R. Robson school in Vermilion and everyone had lots of fun playing.

Our public speaking will be on February 22, at the Minburn Hall. Thank you to ever yone who supported our tire and electronics recycling on November 10. Tire and electronics recycling will resume next fall.

Our next meeting will be held on January 7 in Minburn. This year the club has 24 members with steer projects.

Carpentry Apprentice Hails From Nunavut Colleen Symes Submitted

Of all the clothing Graysen Adamache packed in his duffle bag for his eight-week stay in Vermilion, the item he’s worn the least is his winter jacket.

“I’ve only worn it once. It was the last week in November when it snowed.

It’s gorgeous here,” says Adamache, an apprentice carpenter taking his fourth period of technical training at Lakeland College.

The 30 year old works for Kikiak Contracting in Kugluktuk, Nunavut, a hamlet of 1,400 people on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. He completed two apprenticeship training periods at Aurora College in Fort Smith, N.W.T, and one at NAIT in Edmonton.

“I wanted to try a different college for my last training period. I looked online for different schools and I liked

what I read about Lakeland. The fact that it’s in a small town and that I could walk everywhere was important so I decided to register,” says Adamache.

He’s glad he did. “Everyone is very friendly here and the instructors are very informative and helpful. I also like the carpentry shop–it’s top notch.”

The married father of four children communicates almost daily with his wife and family via Skype. He’s not gotten involved in campus life at Lakeland as his focus is on doing well in c l a s s e s a n d l e ar n i n g a s m u c h a s possible.

“I have a lot of material to cover in eight weeks. I have the provincial exam to write on December 18 and then the interprovincial (Red Seal) exam on December 19 and then I’m done my training,” says Adamache.

While he’s enjoyed Vermilion’s mild winter tem p eratures, hi s family i s

coping with frigid temperatures that have dropped as low as minus 50 degrees. And it ’s only going to get worse. “I take my training in the fall because my wife wants me at home in January and February when it can get as cold as minus 65 degrees,” he says.

But even when the temperature is that cold, the lifelong Kugluktuk resident still loves doing carpentry projects outside. “It could be minus 55 degrees and I’d still be working outside. I love what I do and I like being outside,” says Adamache, whose hobbies include snowmobiling and hunting caribou, moose and muskox.

There’s no shortage of work in the north for Kikiak Contracting. “We are pretty much the only company in town that builds intensive construction projects like houses and businesses,” says

Adamache, who does everything from framing a house to finishing work. He also runs heavy equipment so he can transport materials to the work site.

One of the many projects waiting for him when he gets home is building a set of circular stairs for a friend.

“I knew we were learning how to build circular stairs during this training period so I can go back and complete that project for him,” says Adamache.

Meticulous project planning is essential as materials for the year arrive via a barge during the summer m o nt hs. Su p p lies c an b e fl own in throughout the year but that quickly gets expensive. As for his family, they do most of their shopping online using Canada Post for delivery. “ We have all of the amenities that everyone else does; we’re just a lot farther north.”

MLA Starke’s Year In Review Nicole Crossan Reporter

“It’s been a very eventful and positive year,” Ver milion - Lloyd minster MLA Richard Starke said when asked about how the 2014 year has gone.

Jerome’s School. This is a major project for a school that is over 50 years old, while it is still in the planning and assessment stage, it is estimated that this work will be complete within the next year or two. The oldest section of the school needs the most work, but the assessors will look at all areas of the school that need refurbishing.

Vermilion received a grant from Alberta Culture in September which was a major achievement as Vermilion was singled out as one of the main provincial sites for Alber ta Cultural Days activities.

“There were some great events held from September 26 to 28.” Starke said after receiving numerous comments from people who attended the events and how much they enjoyed it. “People were proud that our community had so much going on. It was a very exciting weekend.”

The water was turned on and the new spray park was open to the public in June. Starke commented how this spray park at Vermilion’s Provincial Park showed what can happen when community members work together.

Starke was Parks Minister at that time of the official opening in July, so he witnessed the outstanding community effort on behalf of three prongs of

partnerships (The Town of Vermilion, Alberta Parks, and businesses in the community) for this to come to fruition.

The Provincial Park is big asset and a unique aspect of our community, Starke noted.

He also mentioned the work done to remediate an abandoned gas well in the Brennan subdivision. There were safety concerns and possible leakage, so Starke’s office partnered with the minister of energy and the Town of Vermilion in a cooperative effor t that would enable this project to be completed (or nearly so). There is still some work to be finished up on it in the spring time. Starke said he was “glad we resolved that.”

In addition Starke said, “ We are ver y pleased to be working with Premier Prentice. The government is clearly under new management at a time when there are both rural and urban issues.”

Starke is among those on the health care review panel that was announced in September. Panel members have been traveling around the province to complete a provincial health care review. He has just completed the first day’s report for the health minister and is looking into moving onto the next phase of that study in the new year.

Starke said the health review is a very challenging project, but it is needed to help us to move on.

“It ’s been ver y energizing to see the kind of skills, competence and c o nf i d e n c e t h at Pr e m i er Pr e nt i c e has brought to the government and Caucus,” Starke explained.

Community Christmas Dinner Receives Early Gift

With the holiday soon approaching, the annual Ron Moses Communit y Christmas Dinner has been accepting food donations but this year has received a boost from a local Hutterite colony. After hearing the call for donations the Mannville Hutterite colony has donated the potatoes for the event

as well as five turkeys to make sure there is plenty of food to go around.

Every year the dinner sees a larger attendance for the afternoon meal and entertainment which was started by Ron and Lynda Moses in 1996. That year saw 50 people attend and one meal delivered from its venue at the Legion Hall.

Af ter Ron’s passing in August of 2005, Lynda kept up the tradition and after moving the event to the Senior’s

Hall, the dinner now sees more than 200 people enjoy the meal with approximately a quarter of the meals being delivered to those who cannot attend.

A number of volunteers are also responsible for making sure there is plenty of food to go around as well.

The Goat’s Christmas Convoy

Local radio station 106.1 The Goat, as par t of Vista Radio’s for ty sister stations across Canada, worked this Charity Week to find “one million ways to give back to our communities.”

The Goat’s goal is to help out the Vermilion, Wainwright and Lloydmins ter fo o d b a n ks. R e pre s e nt at i ve s from The Goat traveled to six locations within these communities from December 10 to 12 with trucks for hauling the donations supplied by Aaron’s Furniture and Rosenau Transport from Lloydminster.

Kelly O’Rourke, Daily Grind Host, and Lena Sho, Morning Breath Host, were in Vermilion on December 10

from 2 to 6 p.m. to collect food bank donations at the Eastalta Co - op in Vermilion with the help of the Vermilion Fire Depar tment and Vermilion R o c k h o c key te a m m e m b e r s w h o helped load the truck. Once the truck was loaded the cash and food donations were shipped to the Vermilion Food Bank.

O’Rourke commented it was a fantastic haul as they weren’t even finished their day in Vermilion yet and they had already received $2,000 in cash donations for the local food bank in addition to a truck load of food.

They went on to visit the Eastalta Co - op in Wainwright on December 11 and four locations in Lloydminster (Co-op, Safeway, Sobeys and Superstore) on December 12.

The Innisfree Ukrainian Dance group held its annual Santa Tea at the Innisfree Rec Centre this past Saturday, December 13. The dancers led the singing of O Canada and the show got underway. The afternoon showcased the performances of the four groups of dancers, a solo performance by Kathleen Fleck and a duet by the brother-sister combination of Megan and Tyson Rudolf. The performances were followed by a luncheon and a visit from Santa Claus where all the children in attendance took a turn visiting with him.

Senior’s Centre Holds Christmas Potluck

the four dollars and have a meal fit for a king or queen. With Christmas being just around the corner, the centre geared this month’s potluck toward Christmas.

On December 10, as members of the community were arriving and waiting for the time to feast on a huge array of homemade dishes they were greeted by Christmas Seniors performed a Newfoundland tradition called Mummering. Photos Lorna Hamilton.

Once the meal was complete, a few members of the Senior’s Centre and invited guests put on a little performance for the visitors. It began with a skit entitled “Any Mummers Allowed In?” which was organized by MC Mamie Sainsbury to give Alberta a little taste of Newfoundland traditions.

Following the skit and few technical hiccups, the evening progressed nicely with a skit from Jeanette Coutts called

“Blazing Birthdays” and Gertrude Isert’s “A Seniors Version of The Night Before Christmas,” along with vocal performances by the Vermilion Quartet, Judy Walsh, Leslie Bruce, Doreen Ford and Dixie Farkash with piano accompaniment by Karen King.

The turnout was incredible said Tom Kibblewhite, President of the Senior’s Centre, as he spoke about the 82 members of the community, including 12 residents of The Vermilion Lodge who arrived by Handibus to attended the supper.

The senior community choir Happy Harmonizers, which was started in 1992, performed their Christmas night of music at the Senior’s Centre with invited guests Touch of Brass hand bells, 16 year old violinist Amanda Shaw and 14 year old pianist Tanner Shaw on December 11.

The night of musical entertainment began with the Happy Harmonizers, directed by Irene Smith, singing various songs from their Bird Songs set.

Next, the hand bells performed titles which they performed at the Legislature Building in Edmonton on Friday, December 5 directed by both Bonnie Bauer and Janet McLennan.

Once the hand bells had finished their first set brother and sister duo Amanda and Tanner Shaw took to the stage to wow

the audience with their Violin and piano skills. As the evening progressed the Happy Harmonizers took to the stage to perform titles of various Christmas songs accompanied by pianist Glen Teasdale for the duration of their performances.

During the hand bells second set of Christmas songs, Director Bonnie Bauer told a joke, as she called it, about being in the legislature and the crowd applauded for a long time. She looked at them and said “Okay enough,” with the audience responding, “You’re supposed to play another song.”

The evening ended with tea, coffee and of course cookies.

Director Irene Smith would like to inform members of the community that anyone 55 years and over can join their choir and she looks forward to meeting new members.

Carolling Group Ushers In Christmas

On December 10, Mrs. Bauer led t h e G r a d e 1- 2 c l a s s e s w h o d i d a fantastic job, as did the Grade 6 Hand Bell group. Then, on December 11, Grade 3-5 students, under Ms. King’s direction, took to the stage and did superbly well. We appreciate the audiences for coming out and supporting our concerts.

Mrs. Bauer, who has done 35 years of Christmas concerts, has decided to ret ire at t h e e n d of D e c e m b er.

The Grade 6 Vibe Advisory group decorated a Hope Tree at VES. The ornaments were made by Grade 5 students who are working through a Hope section in their health classes.

All the ornaments had messages of hope on them.

Grade 6 participated in their annual Christmas carolling around town on December 8. They started at Vermilion Valley Lodge, which was the kids’ favorite par t of the carolling. Nex t, they went downtown and stopped at Long’s, Craig’s, Apple Drugs, and the Coop. Then they headed back to the

supper and family dance (with her own personal band by Amber and friends).

Supper will star t at 5 p.m. and the dance will end about 11 p.m. Plates, utensils, coffee, tea and punch will be provided.

If ever yone brings food to share, then hopefully there will be lots to eat and they won’t have to worr y about numbers. Please invite your friends and family to come and celebrate this special milestone in her life.

Library club has been helpful, and had fun decorating the Christmas tree.

There are many books displayed for winter and Christmas in the librar y.

Mrs. MacMillan would like to remind students and parents, to help protect all of our library books. Some students use Ziploc bags to protect their books from wet mit tens. Also make sure

water bottles have tight caps so they don’t leak inside the backpacks.

Books should be returned to the school once or twice a week, depending on when students have librar y s c h e d ul e d. If t h e stu d e nt ha s n ot finished the book, it should still be b r o u g h t t o s c h o o l t o r e n ew i t fo r another week.

Stay warm and active, and then take a break with a good book.

Generous Donations

Derek Collins, Vermilion Outreach School Submitted

Vermilion Outreach School students and staff want to thank very supportive organizations that have made donations which have enriched the atmosphere of our school.

Earlier this year the Lion’s Club of Vermilion donated $2,000 to the school. The purpose of this money was to help improve the entrance area to the school and provide a place for the students to relax during breaks.

The sc hool purc hased a leather couch and a chair for the area. When people come visit there is now a warm feeling. For the students, the two additions give them a place to sit and visit when they are between classes. Before the donation, there really was no area of the school that could be considered a student lounge. The sense of community has been improved in the school.

Devon Canada awarded Vermilion Outreach School a grant of $2,600 for the purchase of Science equipment. The small school does not have a formal Science lab area. With the money, the school has begun to establish a Science Centre for the students to turn to in different parts of their studies. In the centre is a weather station.

The s c ho o l c o ntr i butes weather information to a network that tracks an d m onitor s the weather helping to build bet ter forecasts. The data collected through the station is used in Math and Science classes besides helping show the students what weather to dress for the outdoor physical education activities.

microscope along with a collection of slides. The students are already using the equipment to explore cells and tissue samples for the Biology 20 and 30 courses. The images can be viewed and captured on computer.

This makes it much easier for them to analyze what they are seeing without the eye strain of looking through the eyepiece for long periods of time.

Helping Bali Children To See

Martina, a 13 year old Balinese girl, is one of more than 40,000 Indonesians to have received the gift of sight during the past 23 years, thanks to the work of the John Fawcett Foundation of Sanur, Bali. In November, as a culmination to more than a year of fundraising efforts, our Rainbow of Hope for Children monitoring team spent a week with health care professionals from the Foundation, meeting people like Martina, who have benefitted from this lifechanging program.

Bali, with a population of four million, is one of the more than 17,000 islands of Indonesia, which has one of the highest cataract rates in the world. Currently, 3.5 million

ract surgeries are performed, eye drops distributed, infections treated, and teachers are trained to instruct students about eye care.

Our team, with our guide Gede, from the Foundation, was privileged to visit the village of Macang, where community leaders were registering their residents. Patients were screened with charts and then some were referred for more intensive screening and cataract surgery, while others were issued prescription glasses and drops. Those who were being prepared for surgery were given gowns and caps and seated by the bus to await their turns to have their eyes “cleaned up”. Within 15 minutes, a small incision was made, the cataract extracted and an intra-occular lens implanted, the preferred treatment because it is affordable and can

people in Indonesia need cataract surgery.

Not just a disease of the elderly, babies are sometimes born with cataracts, or cataracts develop in very young children, preventing them from succeeding in school and leading productive lives.

According to 83 year old John Fawcett, who established the Foundation which bears his name, cataracts lead to poverty and poverty leads to cataracts. Cataracts are caused by the six Ds: damage, daylight, dehydration, diabetes, Dad and Mum (genetics), and other diseases. Cataracts can be removed in a 15 minute surgery costing approximately 65 dollars, allowing the blind to see again.

The Foundation’s Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention program provides free high-quality surgery to those who could never otherwise afford it.

Five fully-equipped mobile units provide this service not only on the island of Bali, but also on other remote islands where the buses are transported by the Indonesian Air Force in a Hercules aircraft.

Indonesian law does not permit foreigners to treat their citizens, but Australian and American ophthalmologists volunteer their time to train local health care professionals.

Funds raised through the Rainbow of Hope during the past year are touching many lives. In the sub district of Bebandem, 5,000 people are being screened, 2,500 pairs of glasses are distributed, 100 cata-

Team members were permitted to gown up and observe the procedure. Most exciting, however, was the follow-up visit the next day when bandages were removed, vision checked, post-operative instructions given and people who had been blind for years were able to see!

Subsequent days took us to Banjar Abiansan, and Banjar Beje, where clinics were held and treatment provided. Part of our final day in the field was spent at the Bungaya school, a small school in the mountains in the heart of the jungle. All of the students and staff members were screened and glasses issued to those who needed them.

Not only does the blindness reduction program radically improve the quality of life for individuals and families, but according to CEO LeRoy Hollenbeck, the 40,000 surgeries alone have added $10 million to the Indonesian economy.

Wherever we went, people expressed

their gratitude for this free service. We’d like to convey their thanks and ours to all those Canadians who made contributions to this project and offered the gift of sight to many who could not otherwise afford it.

Demolition crews from Greg Young Trenching and Mechanical moved in on the former MillCom building in Vermilion on December 9, bringing the building down in short order. 2014: A Successful And Eventful Year

As the Christmas holidays approach and 2014 draws to a close, I would like to take the time to reflect on the very productive and eventful year we have had here on Parliament Hill. In this first of two reports, I’ve highlighted some of the major accomplishments our Government has implemented for Canadians this year.

Supporting Canadian Families Earlier this year, The New York Times noted that Canada has the richest middle class in the world. Our Government is determined to continue this track record of success by our introduction of new child tax related measures such as the Family Tax Cut; an increase in the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) for children under the age of six; an expansion of the UCCB to children six through 17; the doubling of the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit to $1,000; and an increase in the Child Care Expense Deduction dollar limits by $1,000. These new benefits will help four million Canadian families, with two thirds of them being low to middle income families. Along with the over 160 tax cuts we have made since 2006, an average family can expect to see approximately $4,500 worth of tax savings annually and direct payments to families.

Continued On The Path Of Jobs, Growth And Long-Term Prosperity T hi s pa st year our G over nm ent has remained steadfast on pursuing economic growth. Through Budget 2014, we helped connect Canadians with available jobs by creating a job matching service; expanding the National Student Loan Program to include students

enrolled in a red seals trade; creating the job grant; investing $55 million to create paid internships for recent graduates in both small and medium-sized business and high-demand fields and invested $75 million in the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers program to support older workers who want to participate in the job market.

We supported job creation, innovation and trade by: cutting red tape for small business; creating the small business tax credit; investing in scientific research; as well as creating and finalizing Canada’s most ambitious trade agreement, the Canada-European Union Free Trade Agreement (CETA). By gaining preferential access to the world’s largest economy, this agreement is expected to create 80,000 new jobs and provide a $12-billion annual increase to our economy.

This year we maintained Canada’s respected economic stance in the world by continuing to have one of the best economic performances among all G-7 countries in recent years – both during the global recession, and throughout the recovery. Our Government will continue on this path as we balance the budget by 2015, while still making record amounts of transfer payments to the provinces. In fact, the OECD recently predicted that Canada will lead G-7 countries in growth, on a per capita basis, over the next 50 years.

Protecting Canadian Consumers And Communities We have made notable strides this year in enhancing the consumer experience in Canada. Our Government began work on the Connecting Canadians plan - a program to bring high speed internet access to rural areas of Canada that are currently lacking the infrastructure

or speed to utilize this vital service. We invested over $390 million over five years to further strengthen Canada’s food safety system, and have consulted Canadians on proposing changes to nutrition labels. Additionally, in passing Vanessa’s Law, we enacted tough new measures to mandate better prescription drug-reaction reporting, labelling, faster recalls, and stricter penalties for non-compliance. Budget 2014 also set aside close to $45 million over five years to expand the focus of the National Anti-Drug Strategy to include prescription drug abuse.

This year also marked great progress for victims of crime as we introduced the Victims Bill of Rights and passed the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act. New laws criminalizing the trafficking of contraband tobacco were made to help combat gang activity and illegal gun and drug use. These bills are further examples of our Government’s record of standing up for victims of crime in our justice system while protecting our streets and communities.

In The Riding As always, I feel very fortunate to have taken part in many memorable events throughout Vegreville-Wainwright this year. In 2014 I hosted a series of 17 town hall and coffee shop meetings throughout the constituency. Constituents had the opportunity to hear updates on what the federal government is doing and what we have planned for the months ahead.

I also heard your feedback on numerous topics, including suggestions for future federal budgets.

In the fall, I held further town hall meetings to address our recent changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. I was pleased to update constituents on our work toward increasing businesses’

access to skilled workers in a shorter time frame. I always enjoy these discussions as it’s a great opportunity to find out both what we are doing right and where we can improve.

I also appreciate the opportunity to meet directly with students throughout the constituency. I recently met with students at Ardrossan Junior/Senior High School as part of a CIVIX Rep Day. There, I outlined the role of a Member of Parliament and received their thoughtful questions. They were a very interesting and well-prepared group and I enjoyed the opportunity to hear which issues are of concern to them. I would say we are in good hands for the future.

In April, I was honoured to recognize Ryley resident Juliefe Presas for her outstanding bravery in the face of danger to herself and others. On the morning of January 19th, Ms. Presas alerted patrons of Ryley Hotel to a devastating fire and helped guide them to safety. It is always a comfort to know that outstanding citizens like Ms. Presas are willing to put themselves in danger for the safety of others.

2014 was a year of important milestones for Canada. In August, I unveiled a plaque at Mundare’s Basilian Fathers Museum to mark the 100th anniversary of the internment of Ukrainian-Canadians and other Canadians of Eastern-European descent from 1914-1920. It was a somber event that marked an unsettling chapter of our history, as over 8,000 Canadians were detained for nothing more than their heritage.

As 2015 approaches, I look forward to the many constituency events I will have the privilege to attend.

The Five Days Of Christmas

It seemed like the Grade 4 class was stepping back in time for a day when they visited the Ukrainian Village near Edmonton. Costumed interpreters explained to the students how early Ukrainian settlers celebrated Christmas, or Ridsvo.

While visiting the homes in the village, the students made a special Christmas bread called a kolach, created wax crosses and learned how to wish friends and neighbours a bountiful harvest.

The students also visited one of the churches in the village and learned about some of the special features of the church and its importance in the lives of the settlers.

It was a lovely day for a wagon ride pulled by two strong draft horses with real jingle bells!

It will be a very busy and Christmasy week at St. Jerome’s this week as the Elementary children make final preparations for the Christmas Concert which takes place on December 18 at 7 p.m. at the Alumni Theatre at Lakeland College. Also Elementary will be celebrating December Happigrams on December 17 at 9 a.m. followed by our Monthly Mass Celebration at 10:30 a.m. Grade 2 to 8 students will be attending a movie in Lloydminster on December 19.

The High School students are Celebrating the “Five Days of Christmas” all week with a variety of activities scheduled.

On December 19 the High School will exchange “Warm Fuzzies” and share an “Ethnic Lunch” together.

The Grade 5 class enjoyed Christmas Caroling at the Farmer’s Market and then downtown Vermilion. It was a beautiful day to let our voices soar and celebrate this wonderful season.

Congratulations to the Sr. Girls Basketball Team as they won Gold at their home tournament. The girls beat Viking 62 to 32 and then defeated P.V in a close game 67 to 54. The final game was a close one as the Spartan girls won 55 to 52 over the Ryley Rebels.

The St. J Spartans Sr. Boys finished third in their home tournament. The Spartans defeated Marwayne 82 to 70 in their opening game; lost to New Norway in the semifinal 55 to 81; and bounced back to defeat Bawlf in the third place game in a thriller 55 to 52.

Well done, boys! Congratulations to the Jr. “A” Girls as they defeated P.V. 29 to 8.

Vermilion Rock shut out the Paradise Valley Jets on December 12 in a 11-0 game.

The Rock was on fire right from the beginning of the game as they scored seven goals in the first period. The first goal was by Randy Simmons five minutes into the first period. Another was scored a minute later by Dan Betz. A couple minutes later Aaron Betz and within the next ten seconds another was scored by Murray Brown. Four minutes later Murray Brown scored another goal leaving 7:30 left in the first period and a score of 5 to

Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.– Michael Jordan Creating a path of wildfires? That is what Paige Gregg and the girls of the Wildcat basketball team were doing during the recent basketball tournament held at St. Jerome’s. Sizzling like electric currents along a frosty power

line, they crackled and popped to a 38 to 33 win against Assumption. The next game they seemed to simmer a bit tackling the rough and tough team of Ryley, but not able to keep the momentum. They exploded in the final half of their third game against Paradise Valley to a bronze medal victory of 55 to 37. Way to go team! The presence of Kayla Rober ts, their faithful roadie, was their flame of support flickering from the stands…every team needs a roadie like that.

Fire on ice, is that even possible? It

is when you are talking about speed skating. Sisters: Presley, Laramie and Jelena Parr and Jace and Kyra Weidmark were definite embers glowing on the glassy ice ridden stage of the Fire On Ice competition held in Lloydminster on December 6. Ignited passions of the sport left the arena in a wave of smoke….trailing from their blazing blades.

Although there were a few falls and a few upsets, the girls performed fantastically. It was a great first competition for the season. Jace maintained that heat and scorched the ice with a fourth overall placement. Awesome work, Jace! Kyra also placed fourth overall in her category but added a little glimmer with a bronze medal relay finish.

Marvellous job, Kyra! We can’t wait to see what else the season has in store

for you.

The staff and students at Dewberry School are beginning to feel the tingle of the season. The hallways are aglow with decorations and Christmas cheer.

As we race against time to practice our Christmas plays for the annual concert, visions of pancakes and gifts are consuming the little ones thoughts.

We can’t wait for holidays and Santa to burst upon the scene next Friday.

We will stumble through our mishaps at rehearsals, rise above our costume issues and even find creative ways to make all eight reindeer appear in our skits (even if there aren’t enough students in our class). We will show our spirit and perform amazingly next week. We will conquer all obstacles.

K ind erk id s have been travelling to the Mannville Rec Center to learn how to skate. We are happy to report that after only three sessions, all the kinders are able to get up by themselves and travel around the rink. We are so proud of their determination!

Grade 8s with Mrs. Wagner were busy either re -writing a Christmas story from a different point of view or creating their own while the Grade 9s have been working on rewriting the lyrics to their favourite Christmas song and making it into something new.

The Grade 4 students with Mrs. Amero have been learning about writing from different points of view and persuasive writing. They read the book “How Santa Got His Job” by Stephen Krensky.

S tu d e nt s t h e n s p e nt s o m e t im e disc us sing the traits or sk ills that Santa possesses in order to do his job and why he would need to have those skills. They are now in the process of writing a persuasive letter to become an elf at the North Pole. Students were asked to discuss what skills or traits they would have to have to work as an elf.

One student replied” I would have to like to drink milk and eat cookies because that is what elves eat for all 3 of their meals.” Another student thought that they would have to be able to get into tricky spaces because “if Santa got stuck they might have to go down the chimney and assist him to get unstuck.” The students are enjoying expressing why they should be hired as an elf at the North Pole.

Sr. High foods students have been baking up a storm, so watch out next week (businesses) for your package to be delivered.

As well as practicing for the Christmas concert, the Grade 5 class has been learning to play the r e c o r d e r. L ove l y m u s i c h a s b e e n heard coming from their room this past month.
