Hallway of Handicrafts At Lakeland Mall

This couple from Vegreville, Reg and Hazel Elliott, braved the cold and snow to bring a unique collection of Christmas-themed wood carvings to the Hallway of Handicrafts display at Lakeland Mall this past weekend.

A dazzling display of paintings were on display at Lakeland Mall during the Hallway of Handicrafts that ran from November 28 to 29. They were painted by Laura Munro who donates 20 per cent of revenues from her painting to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Vermilion Jumpstarts Christmas

Visitors were treated to some hot chocolate and hot dogs hosted by the Junior B Tigers at the ATCO building as part of the kickoff for the Night Light Parade and Candy Cane Countdown.

Children were handed candy canes and other items as they watched the colourful floats parade by topped off by the grand finale of a live Santa Claus waving at the children from a train window. Groups of people flocked to the Festival of Trees after the parade where they could donate to Santa’s Anonymous, vote and bid on trees, drink hot chocolate, eat a few cookies, and get their photo with Santa.

Showcased trees were donated by Vermilion and area businesses and organizations. Some of the interesting trees included the Vermilion Public Library’s which had the North Pole at the top and

FOCUS’ which had hands wrapped around it. Children were excited to see a photo of their principal on the photo frame tree by Dragon Hare Studios and the tree that looked like Frosty the Snowman. Adults were impressed by the amount of fishing supplies that hung from the Fishing Tree and surprised by the Christmas Village lighting up the wall at the end of the circle of trees.

Funds raised from bids on the trees were donated to local charities like Santa’s Anonymous. The trees drew a lot of attention from crowds as they pointed and commented on the trees. See more photos next page.

Surprise Photo With Santa Candice Traber of Lakeland Funeral Homes and member of the Rotary Club posed with Santa at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on November 27 just before the Festival of Trees. Rotary member sold cookies, coffee and tea to those willing to donate to the Haying In The 30’s charity. The Vermilion Rotary Club will match donations up to $1,000.

With approximately nine inches of snow falling in such a short period of time, this past week has been a treacherous and time consuming task to maneuver around our town. On Saturday, November 22, snow continuously fell well into the morning hours of Sunday as our town tried to keep up with the task of clearing snow off our streets.

Two days later there were many streets which still harbored a large quantity of snow with more snow to c ome.

The forecast was correct, which isn’t always the case, and on Thursday and Friday we were hit with another significant snowfall.

As our town awoke for business and everyday life on Monday, November 24, ever y where you looked people were getting stuck every few feet. I for

one can honestly say I was considering just leaving my vehicle at the last place I parked it because I was becoming frustrated with the amount of times I had gotten in a jam and wondered, will I get out of here?

Many complaints have been placed on social media about the conditions of the roads over the last few days, but with every situation which occurs there is always a silver lining. The harsh road conditions actually brought our community together.

Over the past week I received phone calls from two members of our community, Lil Wilson and June Bachman, who wanted to talk about the wonderful people who helped them out while they were braving the streets.

Lil s poke with me on the phone about the frustration and gratitude she felt on Tuesd ay Novem ber 24 while she was out delivering meals to seniors of our community. At one point she decided to walk to some of

her destinations strictly because she was tired of becoming stuck and feeling like a burden to other members of our community.

June Bachman who I also spoke with on Tuesday expressed some frustration about the road conditions and, like myself, understands that it takes time to clean up from such an excessive snowfall.

While we all feel frustration sometimes, understanding still has to enter into the equation. We can all understand that there are only so many crews who can be available to clean our streets.

The one sentiment I hear all over town from people is the kindness from other members of our community.

As Lil, June, my co workers, myself and countless others have all been helped by Good Samaritans over the last few days, we would like to express a very warm and heartfelt thank you to each and ever y person who has

stopped and helped a member of our community. The compassion and kind hand has not gone unnoticed.

Unfor tunately, we don’t know the names of the people who have helped many of us get unstuck over the last few days, but that does not change the gratitude which is felt. You all know who you are.

If you see someone in our town who is in need of a helping hand stop and give it, the personal reward of knowing you helped a member of our community or brought a smile upon a person’s face for your act of kindness is truly an incredible feeling.

Pay the kindness forward, you never know who you might be helping at that moment and you never know when you may be placed in a situation where you may need a helping hand. So let’s keep the momentum going, let’s keep our little town known for the kindness and selfless acts it is known for.

Let’s keep paying it forward.

So much for our plus 4 temperatures with no snow! Sorry folks, but I had to hook up the snow plough to the quad. I waited as long as I could, but we are truly jinxed now. In fact, it took me four hours to plough out with my huge driveway, parking lot and outbuildings just two days ago.

I woke up this morning and there is twice as much snow today.

That cursed east wind blows something wicked our way without fail. The snow is not such an issue, but that east wind likes to blow hard and make huge drifts everywhere.

This past Sunday I couldn’t pass up the urge to get out there in all that fresh snow.

It was a nice snow…deep but fluffy and not drifted and the hunting was outstanding.

Everything was out moving around, deer, moose coyotes, birds and every other small critter you can think of that is local. Tracking was at its best and I spent more time looking down than looking for deer.

One track I saw was a moose track that had a deer track and a coyote track all in one. I saw where a weasel had to jump to make its way on top of the snow and occasionally dive into the fresh snow.

The weasel, most likely on mouse patrol, would dive deep and resurface several feet away and carry on its scurrying way. There were pintail grouse everywhere and I bet I saw over 50 different grouse.

Around The Campfire see the big pintail grouse near my home but now they seem to be everywhere and thriving. They are often mistaken for my favorite grouse, the Ruffled grouse.

They both have quite the system of landing in deep snow, they perch high in the trees and fly down into the fields to feed and when they land it doesn’t look so graceful, in fact it looks more like a crash landing.

They hit the snow head on like a rocket at full speed. The Pintail will than feed on crop seeds making a real neat tunnel system complete with skylights throughout the area.

The porcupine’s track looks quite comical as they plow snow more than walk through it. They have little round paw prints with super small steps about an inch apart. It’s funny they don’t get exhausted just moving a couple feet.

Porcupines not being the smartest cookies in the box will walk over anything.

They have very long claws that enable them to climb trees so not much gets in their way. One set of Porcupine tracks made me stop my truck on a rural road to look and laugh out loud. The road was built through half a small hill so the road on one side is a solid six foot high dirt bank straight up.

The porcupine, on his way to who knows where, crossed the road in a straight line and made its way up the bank. It made it very near the top at its steepest and then fell backwards rolling and summersaulting down to the bottom.

The tracks in the snow told the story. It tried once more, which ended up with the same results, so it was only probably then the porcupine clued in to go around. So with a slight dizzy stride it wandered down

the road.

It’s evident the deer are rutting in their breeding season. During the rut, bucks will get a little stiff legged. The bigger the buck the more evident as they leave drag marks in the snow to every track.

When on foot those are the fresh deer tracks we are looking for. If we know they are fresh in the snow we will follow them, during the rut they are looking for love and will walk long distances.

It is quite interesting to read what they do. In the buck’s travels, it will find a nice tree line and make ground scrapes. They will paw out an area about a meter long and half meter wide to bare the earth then they will urinate in the middle leaving their distinctive scent to mark its territory and attract the females.

At this ground scrape they will chew or bite off an overhanging branch. This branch is a must for the buck and is a prime consideration for the location of its ground scrape. It then slobbers and rubs all over the bitten branch and leaves more distinctive scent, the higher the bite branch the bigger the buck.

When a receptive doe is looking for love she will find one of these ground scrapes and also urinate in it. The buck will re-visit

and refresh these ground scrapes often until he finds it was visited by a doe, and then things get crazy.

That’s usually when you see big bucks in a middle of a field at noon, something they would never normally do. They are following the doe in a lovesick blindness to everything but her.

Also, along that same bush line, the buck will find a suitable tree and rub and scrape all the bark off the tree than rub eye and antler base scent on the rub, telling other bucks this is his territory.

I love being outdoors in new snow, it’s like an outdoor educational classroom and with a tracking hobby, it seems I learn something new each time I get out there and look closer.

When the Smoke Clears Then there was the silly redneck that was following tracks in the snow. He thought he was going to be a successful hunter until he was hit by the train.

Letter From Fred Holman Part 1 Franklin Wolters Columnist

I expect, with their similar experiences, particularly in the struggle to survive on the prairies during the 30s, meant they had a lot in common. Certainly they were both very hard workers and knew that they had to rely on themselves. My sister, Eileen McBride, and I grew up in Victoria.

Mom and Dad moved to Kamloops, B.C. to be near my sister.

“Hardest Man In The Country To Work For” This is the first excerpt of the letter written by Stan Holman.

After the winter with Henry, I went home for the summer, as there was always plenty of work. The farm fences to mend, rocks to pick-between spring work, haying, harvesting and chores.

In the fall, I said to dad, “I hear old man Wolters wants a hired man, but they say he is the hardest man in the country to work for.”

Dad’s response, “Well, if you can work for him you will be able to work for anybody.”

So I went over and got the job-winter chores, $5 a month, room and board, with Sundays off after the chores were done about 10 to 4 p.m., a saddle horse to go

to the local dance, maybe once a month, place, unless you count the hired man at and of course home, standard practice. $5 a month.

Below is the biography written by Fred Holman’s son, Stan Holman.

Fred Holman was born in London, England in October 1918 and just celebrated his 96 birthday. He was the youngest of six children. In 1927, the family immigrated to Canada, travelling across Canada by rail.

On the train, chatting with folks, Granddad was advised not to go to the Peace River District, but to get off the train in Edmonton and search for land from there.

This they did and ended up on a rented farm at Tolland, Alberta.

The family stayed there through the 30s and then eventually all moved away.

In o n e of Ph i l i p Roth’s novels, the protagonist is a successful writer who abandons his former life in New York City to live obscurely in rural Massachusetts. He stops reading newspapers, watching television, socializing. He chooses to become oblivious to current events, citing a desire to escape the despair evoked by his former “awareness”. That kind of insular lifestyle may appeal to us at times, even if the contemplation of it is limited to the time it takes to read a 292 page novel.

We live in a liberal minded, multi-cultural democracy. We enjoy, in most regions anyway, a robust economy. Ostensibly, there exists the opportunity for every member of our citizenry to practice without obstruction the freedom of expression, the freedom to pursue any interest from a broad range of vastly diverse options. Canada simply has and is the best of the best.

If anyone doubts it, take time out to locate a podcast, read an article, or a blog entry detailing a Day in the Life of an ordinary citizen in Iraq, Syria, Gaza, Sudan, or any one

of a roster of zones enduring the ugly chaos of long-term socio-political unrest.

In the context of all that tumult, we’re still the fortunate ones. We keep telling ourselves that, even as we witness a steady erosion of our idyllic maple leaf garden.

The Auditor General’s Report released earlier this week cites a number of concerns surrounding the administrative efficiency of Federal Government departments. Veterans Affairs apparently moves at an aged turtle’s pace when processing complicated applications for veterans seeking assistance after completing service to our country. For those suffering the after-effects of military service and possibly in desperate need of services, the lengthy delay must seem not only frustrating but disrespectfully punitive.

Library and Archives Canada spent $15.4 million dollars developing a high tech digital repository intended to catalogue and preserve archival records of National importance, but it’s never been used. Some 900 boxes of irreplaceable (and currently inaccessible) documents sit idly in a dark warehouse awaiting....something. No records can so far be located to indicate either how or why the digital repository was scrapped,

or what, if any, efforts were made to recover even a fragment of that enormous investment. It isn’t clear either how the “investment” fits into the timeline of the massive shutdown of a series of library and archives locations resulting from the 2012 Federal Budget cuts.

Canada Revenue Agency committed an unconscionable breach of private citizens’ right to confidentiality when someone in that department forwarded a CD containing reams of their personal information, none of it redacted, to a senior reporter at CBC. CBC reports that no one submitted a request to CRA asking for access to any such information.

News from the House of Commons suggests that some of our elected members conduct themselves like characters out of a Harlequin novel. Some have cited that it’s lonely out there, spending weeks away from home and family. Such longing may be temporarily alleviated through raucous partying. Allegedly, some find solace by casually “consorting” with fellow lonely hearts, the word used by one Conservative MP. As if no other working soul has ever endured the perils of loneliness and yearning for the comforts of family while toiling

away from home. Is it unfair for a wide-eyed public to expect better of those we send to Ottawa?

Patronizing government ads appeal to the dummy residing within us, placating our concerns with assurances that all is well and big benefits are en route. Also, the Opposition is a demon. Meanwhile, Sun News releases a quote falsely attributed to a member of the Liberal Party, secretly recorded by an apparent covert operator for the Federal Conservatives. Is secretly recording a private conversation even legal, we wonder?

Unsavory behavior is just unsavory behavior, no matter the status of the practitioner. It degrades every one of us. It diminishes the quality of our country and undermines the governing of it.

On social media website, Twitter, the Department of Foreign Affairs recently posted that the newest public account @ Canada “will act as a shop window for everything that makes Canada the best country in the world”. Oh yes. O Canada!

With pride and enthusiasm, we invite the world to gaze in upon our shining Nation.

A: Here is how I usually advise my clients. If the old wooden casements are in

good condition that is they open and close properly and are not broken or rotten, I say they should be fine for a while longer. Most people think the new vinyl window is going to save them hundreds of dollars once installed but this is not generally the case. Let’s think about it. Most homes in this part of the Midwest have a gas bill of $50 -$100 a month on average. Of that cost a fair amount is administration costs. So let’s assume the old window is only R-1 value.

The new window is likely going to be R-3. If this window is letting in 6% of the cold the new window will let in 1- 2% instead. So how much does that 4-5% cost you? Based upon $100/month gas bill (year round) you will save approximately $5/month. The new window cost $900 to install. Therefore it will take you 15 years to pay for the new window in savings provided to paid cash for the windows. To me I don’t think this is a great way to spend your money.

Hunting season has just finished here in Alberta. This is a great venison stew recipe for successful hunters. I usually prefer moose over venison, but this year we were not fortunate enough to acquire a moose tag, so venison it is. I decided to try adding bacon, caramelized onions and mushrooms to a basic stew recipe and it turned out so good that now I can say with surprise, I am converted to being a venison fan.

For this stew you can use the tougher outside cuts of meat. Long cooking and the use of vinegar help to tenderize the meat and lessen the game flavor. If your venison is frozen, it is best to defrost it in cold water as the microwave slightly toughens the meat. When the venison is defrosted, rinse and cut into 3/4 inch cubes. Allow two and a half hours of cooking time for this stew if you are using a tougher cut of meat.

To begin, as you are cooking the bacon, onions, mushroom and venison, you must keep careful watch over the cooking temperature so that the ingredients are nicely browning but not blackening the bottom of the pot, as you will be adding water to the pot to pull up the flavor from the bottom of the pot.

Venison Stew 3 -4 slices bacon 1 cup chopped mushrooms 1 cup chopped onions 1 1/2 pounds Venison, cut into cubes 3 tablespoons vinegar

3 bay leaves Water 3 cloves chopped garlic 2 cups potato cubed 2 cups rutabaga cubed 2 cups chopped carrots 1 cup chopped celery 3/8 teaspoon savory Salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons cornstarch In a heav y bottomed pot for your stew, fry the bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove the bacon and sauté the onions and mushrooms in the bacon drippings. If you need to add more fat, add a little butter. When the onions and mushrooms have slightly browned, remove them. Into the stew pot add the cubed venison and brow it, again adding additional fat such as a little lard if needed.

When the venison is cubed have browned add sufficient water to cover the meat well and bring to a slow boil.

Add the vinegar, garlic and bay leaves.

C o nt inu e to c o o k c overe d for t wo hours and 15 minutes, checking occasionally to add more water. Add the rest of the vegetables and additional water to cover all the vegetables.

Cook an additional 15-20 minutes until the vegetables are done. Season the stew to taste with the savory, salt and pepper. Mix two tablespoons of cornstarch into a cup of cold water and stir until you have a smooth paste.

Pour the cornstarch mixture into the pot, stirring to distribute it evenly.

Continue to cook for approximately five minutes until the stew has thickened. If the stew is allowed to cool and then it is reheated, it produces thick gravy.

2nd Annual Children’s Festival Nicole Crossan Reporter

“This is the second annual Children’s Festival hosted by the Coalition. It is a great opportunity for partners to work together and offer the wonderful activities we have today,” Crystal Jackson, Co-ordinator of Vermilion and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition (aka: The Coalition) said at the event held on November 23.

Face painting, a quiet time tent, an infant’s play centre, an obstacle course, dress up costumes and a variety of other games were among the many activities children enjoyed at the festival in the gymnasium at Lakeland College.

After the children were done playing they were invited to hand in their tickets for a snack at the snack table in a separate room. There was a selection of preschool favorites that included

animal crackers, oat snack bars, and a selection of gluten-free crackers.

The Coalition was formed after children aged zero to six in the Vermilion and area were surveyed to discover where they were at in four areas of early childhood development: Language and Thinking Skills, Emotional Maturity, Communication Skills and General Knowledge, and Social Competence.

It was discovered that children in our area are doing best at developing appropriately in the area of emotional maturity (86.96 per cent) and need to improve most in the area of language and thinking skills with 21.74 per cent experiencing moderate to great difficulty in that area. “ The idea around the Children’s Festival is to get children together to socialize and also to teach parents the developmental milestones,” said Nancy Whalen, chairperson of The Coalition.

Five Cantatas Nicole Crossan Reporter

Vermilion’s Cantata Choir performed their first SATB (soprano, alto, bass, and tenor) concert of the year at the Vermilion Valley Lodge on November 23. Unlike most choirs, the Vermilion Cantata Choir includes two soloists, Rex Cunningham and Marnie Lunty, and three narrators, Barb Wilhelm, Keith Marsh and Sharyn Dew and were accompanied by pianist Glen Teasdale.

“We are delivering the story of Christmas through music. It is very much a Christian message,” Shirley Huedepohl explained.

No two Cantata’s have been the same so far. The director has used a different one of Pepper Choplin’s arrangements for the past six years.

This year’s Cantata has 35 members who all wore seasonal, stylish costumes for their 45 minute performance. The Cantata is an interdenominational and community choir that includes members from as far away as Dewberr y and Mannville and from a wide diversity of churches including United, Anglican, LDS, Alliance, Lutheran, and Catholic.

What unites them together is their desire to bring the musical message of Christmas to the communities they visit.

Shirley and Bernie Huedepohl began the interdenominational Cantata Choir about ten years ago as an offshoot of two choirs - the Lakeland Voices which folded after Charles Townsend passed away and the United Church choir. Advertising to find people willing to sing and volunteer their time and talents begins sometime in September each year and practises start the last weekend of September.

Director Huedepohl said it is a nonaudition choir and invites anyone who

They begin with two practises a week in hopes that people will make one of the two, then the two groups join together for once a week practises from mid November until they begin their five annual performances.

“What a wonderful kickoff to our Christmas season again! Thank you and merry Christmas to you all,” Christine Smith, employee at the Vermilion Valley Lodge said.

The Cantata does not charge for their performances, but with the help of the Catholic Church volunteers, they ask visitors to make a donation to the local food bank.

The performance was followed by an invitation to the audience to sing one verse of “Silent Night” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” with the choir.

Brenda Gordan, mother of one of the residents at Vermilion Valley Lodge stated, “It was an absolutely beautiful performance. It’s really nice that community members come in and entertain for the residents.”

Upcoming Performances The next Cantata took place at the Mannville McQueen United Church on November 30 and they will be performing one song during the Blue Christmas performance at First United Church on December 3. Their main performance will take place on December 7 at 7 p.m. at the First United Church. Anglican Church Annual Christmas Tea

L. Bell Reid (Bunny) was in attendance at the Christmas Tea at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church where her painting was being raffled off. She painted this picture along with a few others at a workshop she took with Willy Wong at Red Deer College this past summer. Highway Travel Proves Difficult Throughout region Motorists across the Vermilion region experienced less than pleasant driving conditions as the snow fell and blew across highways and roads. Many drivers found themselves waiting in the ditches for tow trucks to pull them from their icy parking spots. Vermilion Volunteer Cribbage Doubles Betty Deschambault Submitted

The Cribbage Doubles teams gathered at the Elks hall on November 13 to play cribbage. After six games, Lasting Impressions ser ved a delicious hot meal. Then six more games were played.

Second Place was Gordon and Ken with total of 1412 and Third Place was Ray and Stella with a total of 1409.

Our day ended after playing cards by visiting, coffee and treats.

Robson, St. Jerome’s, Clandonald School, Kitscoty School and the Vermilion Public Librar y from November 25 to 27, to inform children, youth, and adults of online safety tips. This internet safety program was created through a partnership between TELUS and Media Smarts who have worked with schools across Canada to decrease the problems with cyberbullying, identity theft and predators.

Through surveys and reports it was discovered that 99 per cent of Canadians have access to wireless internet, yet the age of Internet users has decreased over the past 11 years from ten years old in 2002 to three years old in 2013.

According to research done by Kids Help Phone, “ C yber bullying Real ity Check,” cyberbullying behavior is most common on social networking platforms and text messaging is the second most common. Out of 2,474 youth aged 13 to 15 surveyed, 70 per cent reported having been cyberbullied and 44 per cent reported having bullied someone at least once.

The same study also revealed that many kids were unaware that cyberspace is personal, and that the flow of information is difficult or impossible to control as stated on definetheline.ca.

C y ber bullying is d efine d o n the RCMP website as using communication technologies to repeatedly intimidate or harass others. Unlike bullying, it can follow a person everywhere they go including their homes where people are “usually safe from traditional forms of bullying.”

With A Book.” The books were for adults and were Valentine’s Day themed. Last year, nearly all the books were rented out.

Library Manager, Stuart Pauls, is hoping for similar or better results this year.

“The library is a very visual place. This is like merchandizing clothing. You turn it on its head and peak interest with a new appearance,” Pauls said.

This year, rather than having an adult program, the Vermilion Public Library has

placed books appropriate for children and young adults aged 8 to 17 years. Three clues about the gift-wrapped book and an entry form for a draw for a gift card to A & W, were located on the front cover of each book.

Pauls showed one example of a book where the three clues were: dragon, battle, and adventure. A reader might hazard a guess that this could be one of the books from the “How to Train Your Dragon” series.

Canley Cup Collects Stuffies For Santa’s Anonymous Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted School trustee, Bernie Huedepohl, spent a little time in our school on November 21.

He took about an hour in the library reading “The Luck Child” to the Grade 5 and 6 students.

On November 25, the Grade 6 students celebrated La Fete de Saint Catharine by pulling taffy with Ms. Ishaq. They learned the meaning of the tradition and the importance of the day in French-Canadian Culture.

VIBE is in full swing with their digital citizenship program for Grades 4 to 6. Telus Wise presented at our school on November 26 on the importance of leaving a clean digital footprint. They discussed how to stay safe online, named sites that kids should not be on, and told them not to bully or hack others accounts. There was also a presentation for parents that same night.

Old-fashioned day took place at VES on November 27. Staff and students were attired as they dressed in days gone by,

with staff dressing a few decades older than the students. It’s interesting to note that students thought that the 1980s were the ‘old days’.

There was a teddy bear toss at the Canley Cup game of floor hockey on November 27. 313 stuffies were collected and will be donated to Vermilion’s Santa’s Anonymous. Congratulations to the staff, who won the game against the kids, but the real winners are the individuals who donated teddy bears and the children who will receive them. Way to go, VES! On the afternoon of November 27, we were treated to the drama students’ dress rehearsal of ‘Pete the Pint-sized Pirate’.

Congratulations to the actors, who did a phenomenal job, and to their directors, Mrs. Doherty, Ms. Ishaq, and Mrs. Myshaniuk who once again, did an awesome job of getting this fine group of students to show off their acting skills.

“The football players have helped the Lions Club bag and deliver sand bags for several years now, and the Lions Club supports the team financially. It’s a nice fit for both organizations as they work together for their mutual benefit,” Cliff Rolheiser said.

The Lions Club donated $800 to the Marauders Football team on November 26 during one of the sand bag filling days at the Ready Mix Concrete plant.

In season, the Lions and Marauders gather to fill sand bags once a week.

Together they made short work of filling 200 sand bags, loading them on the pickup truck and delivering them to the three locations in Vermilion where they are sold, the Co-op Gas Bar, Shell, and Vermilion Truck Wash.

They bag about 800 bags a season and usually sell out each year. The sand bags are multi-purpose as they can be used for extra weight in a vehicle, for traction, and for icy sidewalks. The show was a mixture of Christmas, countr y and spiritual songs whic h provided music al enter tain ment ever yone could enjoy from music legends such as Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Roy Orbison and Patsy Cline.

The show began with sounds of jingle bells as Gil Risling (guitar and vocals) entered the theatre as Hank Williams. The audience immediately began to c lap as Risling began to bellow out the vocals of “Hey Good Lookin.” As the show progressed the audience was graced with the vocals of William Brook field (keyboard, guitar and vocals) Mike Melnichuk (stand-up bass, guitar and vocals) a n d A n d r e a A n d e r s o n ( v o c a l i s t) who per formed as Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn.

National Jersey Day was on Friday, November 28. Students from Grades 6 to12 were encouraged to wear a jersey. Those who wore a jersey were entered into a draw to win a free lunch.

November Elementary Happigrams were held on Thursday, November 27. The theme of Happigrams was “Advent” and was led by the Grade 5 class. They showed three different ways Christians celebrate “Advent”, the Advent Wreath, the Jesse Tree, and the Advent Calendar. The Grade five class made a homemade Advent Calendar for each class Kindergarten to Grade 9. The students ended the performance singing, “Go Light Your Candle”.

The Baking Robots Competition Kim Morritt Submitted

The Baking Robots competed at the Edmonton Regional Vex Competition on November 29 at NAIT with their robot “Cookie.” They are the youngest team there!

The boys are doing exceptionally well for their first competition ever. After the third round, the boys were in first place, they struggled in their fourth and fifth rounds when they first got stuck on a block and then had a dead battery and fell to fifth place by the end of the qualifying rounds. The top five teams head into the finals though, so the boys made the cutoff.

The competition places “alliances” of two different team’s robots against two other teams. The two teams work together to grab blocks from the centre of a playing field and stack them onto posts. Points are earned for every block on the posts or on their mats. The team must rely on their alliances to help them, but at the same time, it can hinder them. At one point, their alliance team was penalized and the boys lost eight points.

The robot boys have taken home fourth place and they have won the Robot Driving Skills Award. What a fantastic accomplishment for these boys!

The other teams in this competition have school support, meaning their schools have the robot parts for the kids to build from.

These boys have had to raise the funds themselves to buy their robot. They met their robotics teacher from Alberta Distance Learning on Skype for help when they need it.

The Provincial Minister’s Award recognizing Municipal Excellence has been awarded to the County of Vermilion River.

The award recognizes Innovation for the continued implementation and success of the Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) program. The award was received from Alberta Municipal Affairs at both the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) conference in September and at the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts & Counties (AAMDC) conference November 18, 2014.

The ALUS program is a voluntary, incentive-based environmental program that recognizes and rewards the positive contributions that farmers make to clean

air and water and biodiversity through their land management practices. The program rewards local producers and landowners for producing ecological goods and services by restoring and preserving natural areas on their land. Providing incentives to producers to restore less productive land back to natural areas or provide sustainable practices such as reduced tilling and soil conservation, produces benefits both financially and aesthetically. Natural areas produce more habitat for wildlife, birds and invertebrates. Water quality is improved via filtration through wetlands. The benefits to the program are endless. ALUS is about growing a healthier environment. The original three year pilot project established in conjunction with Delta Waterfowl continues with approximately 20 landowners and 2,000 acres enrolled in the program. Heavy Load Passes Vermilion On October 21 Entrec Corporation from Aschen, Alberta had the tedious task of transporting two of 14 IPS units to the oilsands in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The trek took a total of five nights with night one beginning in Lloydminster on Highway 16 to Two Hills, night two they travelled from Two Hills to Radway, night three from Radway to Wandering River, night four Wandering River to the point of entry south of Fort McMurray and finally night five from the point of entry to the delivery site in the Oilsands. The IPS units transported are one of the biggest loads to ever be transported to Fort McMurray. The IPS units carried by Entrec Corporation was escorted by some of our local RCMP as the load took up both lanes of the highway. The Loonie drive will be held the week of December 15 to 19 with secondary home groups competing to see who can raise the most. On December 19, we will finish off our loonie drive with a pancake breakfast for students to purchase. Proceeds from this breakfast will also go to supporting the local food bank. We should take a peek into our science classes as the Grade 1s have made their Rainbow Roys, a helpful character to help them remember the colors of the rainbow. Grade 2s began a new unit in science on hot and cold temperature. They tested out thermometers in different temperatures of water, learned about how to read a thermometer, and begun a plan in their “Thought Books” on how they would build a device to keep an ice cube from melting.

Our Grade 3 class is currently working on the unit “Hearing and Sound”. They have conducted several demonstrations and experiments to prove that sound travels in waves, sound starts with vibrations, and that sound can travel through solids, liquids, and air. They will also be learning about decibels, pitch, volume, hearing safety, and parts of the ear.

In Science 4 they are learning about Light and Shadows. They have learned about natural and man-made light sources and how shadows are made. They will be looking at reflection and refraction soon.

The Grade 5 class have been building electrical circuits and learning about safety with electricity. The students have been finding out what makes a circuit work and what doesn’t. The next few weeks they will be busy building a bunch of circuits.

Grade 6 students look forward to watching the night sky to learn many things for their next unit Sky Science. Their language

unit will coincide with the science, and it is called Space, Stars and Quasars.

The Science 9 class with Mr. Polishuk is currently in the middle of their chemistry unit. The students have reviewed WHMIS and MSDS for safety and lab practices.

They have categorized different types of matter and discussed evidence that a chemical change has occurred. They have just finished the historical aspects of atomic theories and have identified how the current periodic table of elements is organized. The students are just getting into how elements combine to form chemical compounds.

A glance ahead shows that skating starts for students in Grades 1 – 8 on December 1. Early Dismissal on December 3, Crazy Christmas Clothing Day on December 12, Grad Christmas Banquet and Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. on December 16.

The Village of Innisfree Library (VIL) held its annual Holiday in the Hallway on a blustery evening on November 26 with visitors being treated to some warm beverages and delicious treats while placing bids on the numerous silent auction items up for grabs.

The evening was hosted by a number of the Millennium Build-

ing users including the VIL, 4H club, Quilting Queens, Friends of the Innisfree Librar y Society (FILS) and the Innisfree Ukrainian Dancers who all submit ted items for the Christmas wreath portion of the auction.

For the third year the VIL has decorated a sock and slipper Christmas tree where people or organizations could donate handmade or bought slippers, socks or mittens which are then donated to local and out of town organizations in need. In the past

Wellness Wonders

What do Zumba, boot camp, Yoga, social influences and mental health have in common? They are the wonders of wellness and these were some of the sessions that the staff and students were involved in for November 20 to 21. These wellness sessions were jam packed with invigorating, yet refreshing and sometimes relaxing ways to help us all improve our bodies; mentally, physically and socially. With sessions on relationship, mental health and cyber-bullying, we learned ways to cope and enjoy our journey of life in positive ways. We acquired an appreciation for breathing and celebrated our diversity as we performed salsa steps, hip hopped and sweated our stress out to the universe. What a fantastic day.

Imagine the feeling of exhilaration. That is what Jenna Bowman and the girls’ Vermilion Tiger hockey team must have felt when their team finished in first place at the November 14 to15 Warburg tournament.

It is great to see such dedication put into extra-curricular activities. Way to go, Jenna!

It was an amazing plethora of vocations. What will be even more amazing is if these same individuals are actually in those chosen careers ten or twenty years

down the road!

National Jersey Day was to top off last week, but the impending snowstorm stole that thunder. Instead of showing our love and support for sport by wearing a jersey for a team or club to work or play we got to dig ourselves out of drifts that filled our backyards and driveways. We know our dedicated grader operators will tidy off the back roads so that we can get back to school and

our next fun-filled three weeks of Christmas concert practice.

The wonders of wellness can be seen and appreciated in so many ways, even our snow days! It’s just a matter of getting out there and making practice of the new strategies we discovered or possibly rediscovered. Cheers to everyone’s wellness and our continued efforts of working together for success.

Five minutes into the third period the Rock scored again giving them a two point lead over the Rustlers.

Stephen Simmons who holds third place in player stats for the Vermilion Rock team scored the first goal within the first two minutes of the game against the Kitscoty Monarchs. The score remained the same by the end of the first period. The second period allowed Aaron Betz to score the Rock’s second goal. This was followed by a third goal for the Rock slipped in with

only 2:16 left in the second period by Eric Fadden, who sits in first place in the player stats for the Rock. The Monarchs scored their one and only goal of the game halfway into the third period. This was quickly followed by another goal by Rock’s Randy Simmons, whose stats place him in second place in his team.

This 4 to 1 win against the Monarchs brought the Rock up to fourth place in the standings with the Comets in first, Hitmen in second and Rustlers now in third.
