An Historical Moment For St. Jerome’s School This is the first time in history that St. Jerome’s School has received all four banners in one season. Both the Junior and the Senior boys and girls volleyball teams have gone on to Counties and Provincials. This is the first time for St. Jerome’s School since 1986 that both the Senior boys and girls volleyball teams have gone to provincials. Junior High boys and girls have already played the county finals, while Senior boys and girls headed to the provincials November 19 after the pep rally. Players spent the rest of the day traveling, practising, setting up, and taking photos, then played their provincial games from November 20 to November 22. Snowmobile Expo Organizers Hope For No Snow!

Believe it or not, a group of local snowmobile enthusiasts is hoping there won’t be a lot of snow between now and December 6.

“If there is,” explains Vermilion Ridge Riders president Warren Young, “Then people will be out enjoying the snow, and won’t be coming to our 3rd annual Snowmobile Expo.”

The Expo is Saturday December 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Vermilion Regional Centre. It’s a new venue, but the expo will continue to feature the same line-up as the first two events: classic and collectable snowmobiles; the latest and greatest of Polaris, Arctic Cat, Yamaha and Ski-Doo lines; sled wraps; accessories and clothing; and, a swap table.

New to this year’s line up is Lakeland

College’s Street Rod Technologies (SRT) program. “This program is about rebuilding vehicles, and sleds certainly qualify. Some of the sleds that will be on display have been meticulously rebuilt,” says Young.

While the latest models will be displayed

by Vermilion’s Baddock Power Products and three Wainwright dealers, the antique and collectibles will be from all over Alberta.

Most of the antiques and collectibles will be from the 1960s through 1990s. This includes a machines owned by Ridge Rider members such as Chris Swan whose antiques include an early 1960’s articulated Ski-Doo and a late 1970s Snow Runner made by Chrysler.

“What you’ll see is everything from a barn find to restored snow mobiles. In past years we’ve had everything from a 1930’s snow tractor to a timber sled, a dirt bike converted into a snowmobile.

“Personally, I find the sleds from the

1980s years ago interesting. My back gets sore just looking at them,” he says.

The swap table is of particular interest to anyone looking for parts. There will be an assortment of hard to find and older parts.

Admission to the expo is $5 plus a food bank donation. “Last year we collected $500 plus three really large boxes of food, and we’d like to exceed that total this year,” says Young.

The Vermilion Ridge Riders has been around since the 1970s but was formally incorporated in 2000. Currently it has 35 members. The club is part of the Alberta Snowmobile Association and operates, maintains and promotes Alberta’s snowmobile trail network.

Vermilion 4H Sheep And Goat Club Awards Tara Martin, Club Reporter Submitted

The Vermilion 4H Sheep Club held its annual awards banquet on November 14 at the Father Cordeau Centre.

Members hosted a potluck supper to invited guests, parents, leaders and fellow members. Door prizes were drawn and then awards were handed out to members for the 2013-14 4H year.

Theft of Cattle Panels Sometime between October 20th and November 1, several dozen panels of steel grey cattle fence/guards were stolen from oil lease sites along the Highway 619 corridor through the County of Vermilion River.

The horse was shot in the middle of its torso with a small caliber firearm, possibly a .22, and suffered injury as a result. Residents in the area had previously seen persons shooting from the roadway in a dark coloured pickup truck.

It appears that this incident is not related to hunting and was merely to cause harm to an animal. Injuring animals is a serious offence and carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment under the Criminal Code, members of the public should call police immediately if they suspect this is occurring.

Islay Jamboree A Hit Nicole Crossan Reporter

Islay had its second Jamboree of the season on November 16. There was a long list of contestants that MC Bruce Gould said, did a great job of pleasing the crowd. The Jamboree began with Eric Mork being welcomed back after taking a break from playing the accordion due to a shoulder injury.

People commented on how much feeling he puts into his music and how much they missed hearing him play the accordion at the monthly Jamborees in Lloydminster and Islay. Mork invited Franklin Wolters to play with him for the last song of his first set.

There were a few young families in attendance who were told that younger families are what is needed at Jamborees in Islay and surrounding area. In many cases, the crowds at the Jamborees are made up of a majority of seniors who have been dancing and playing instruments for many years.

Many of those in attendance met their spouse at a Jamboree and became long time dance partners.

“It’s a great place for people to show off their talent as long as they play something people can dance to,” Wolters said. “Islay has one of the best Jamborees around. Nearly the whole community gets involved.”

Wolter s noted with a tinge of sadness in his voice, how many regular musicians have become worn out, ill, or who have passed away lately.

Some of the current musicians are read y to p a s s o n t h e tor c h to t h e coming generation, but have found a lack of interest there.

T h e I s l ay C o m m u n i t y H a l l w a s packed with people who came from as far as Cold Lake, Lloydminster, Marwayne, Clandonald, and Vermilion to take part in one of the only local Jamborees. The entr y fee included a home-cooked meal, a dance, local entertainment, and jovial company.

Christmas is basic a l l y fo ur we e k s away and already Christmas decorations are popping up all over town, you drive down the street and you can see Christmas trees up in houses and decorations in store windows. The Christmas season feels like it is becoming earlier each and every year, but does that make Christmas the same as it was years ago?

Christmas would begin, at least in my home town, around the middle of December and carry on until January 6.

Now Christmas has become extremely commercialized with stores beginning their Christmas season right after Halloween.

Granted it is a great marketing strategy by businesses, the earlier it is available the more decorations people will buy as they stroll through the seasonal section.

I for one, absolutely love Christmas and everything that goes along with the season so resisting the urge to spend copious amounts of money on decorations I really don’t need is a struggle each year.

Christmas when I was a child was not near as extravagant as it is now. We would make popcorn garland and handmade ornaments for the tree, bake cookies and cakes with my Mom. As for Christmas gifts I can remember the smaller less expensive presents like Barbies, dinkies and paper cut-out dolls etc.

Our family was never one for the whole outside decorations, except for lights around the window and eves, as my Mom

Christmas Is Not Like It Was

grew up with minimal Christmas decorations because back when she was a child, there were no outside lights and fancy ornaments for the tree.

When we grew up Mom kept things pretty traditional. Christmas was a time for visiting with family and spending time with friends.

The Christmas tree was a family event.

Bundled up with your snowsuits on we would be packed into the car and drove down the highway in hunt for what we thought was the perfect Christmas tree.

On Christmas Eve we would see the tree get placed into the holder and then off to bed we went. We would wake up Christmas morning to what seemed to be a magical night, our stockings were filled with a little junk food and fruit. Christmas dinner would be cooking away in the oven and the morning was spent opening our few gifts and then playing endlessly with our new items.

Family would be stopping in throughout the day and we would be bundled up and off we would go to visit as well.

Back in the day, and still somewhat now, there was a tradition in Newfoundland called Mummering, it was the best part of the whole Christmas season. Friends, family, neighbors would dress up in funny outfits, men dressed as women and women dressed as men with their faces covered and they would visit neighborhood houses where there was music, dancing, Christmas cakes, cookies and yes, a little sip of an alcoholic beverage to go with it.

The whole purpose of Mummering was the neighbor you visited had to try and guess who the person was under each disguise.

It was loads of fun and brought the community together as a whole.

Now Christmas has become such a

rat race, running here and running there to get tons of decorations to put outside.

Hundreds sometimes thousands of dollars go into outside Christmas displays, parents running from store to store trying to find the mile long list their children has given them to make sure they are not disappointed on Christmas morning.

The stores and credit card companies are reaping the benefits, we have all done it at some point or another where we spend way beyond our means just so our children can say when they go back to school, they got an ipad or a playstation or a xbox or or or.

Christmas in my eyes, has lost the emotion and bonding it once had. Christmas used to be a time when communities had Christmas parties, outdoor activities for children whether it be skating on a frozen pond or sledding down the closest big hill.

Families spending as much time as possible with each other. Where have our old traditions gone?

I had an idea for Christmas this year, I wanted to do a “Throw Back” Christmas where we would celebrate Christmas like it used to be in the past and I actually got a lot

of slack for it in my household. Who knows, maybe between now and when I start to decorate I will be able to sway the members of my household to follow suit and help get the old traditions back. Times when there was laughter everywhere and the price of the gift received didn’t matter, it was the thought that counted. I am not going to give up on this idea of mine.

So this year as an attempt to bring the community together and let the children of our community have a little taste of how it used to be the Vermilion Voice newspaper is holding a little contest to include the children of our community in the decorating of our office window. We are asking children from the age of 12 and under to make a “handmade” decoration for our front window Christmas display. It can be anything from a colored/painted picture all the way to an extravagant homemade decoration which will be displayed and judged upon by a couple members of our business community. We hope to see many entries and look forward to seeing your homemade decoration between now and December 17. The winner will appear in our December 22 issue with their prize package.

Correction Notice

Notice of a correction for “A Day with Gwen Kibblewhite on page 10 of the November 17 issue of The Vermilion Voice. Gwen Kibblewhite states that she makes fleece rugs, not cotton rugs and she doesn’t use linens, she uses cotton sheets. Furthermore, to clear up any confusion, her Rag Rugs class will take place at the Vermilion Museum and not the Vermilion Library. She hopes to do a rug hooking class in the near future, but a time and a place have not yet been booked for this.

Letter To The Editor In 1905, as soon as the Town of Vermilion was surveyed the first business place was called the Northwest Trading Company with H.W. Brown and Walter Gibson as its operators.

Mr. Brown, was a well-educated man, very articulate and very well liked. Mr. Gibson was a fur trader from the north who was called Uncle Walter by the Brown family. He lived with the Browns. The Northwest Trading Company dealt in everything from furs and horse hair to hardware, groceries, real estate. You name it, They handled it.

As the town grew in property, Mr. Brown was into everything. He was on the first town council, the first board of trade. He homesteaded on the southwest quarter of 28-5-16. He hired carpenters Sherwin and Graham to build his farm house in a beautiful setting up on top of a hill.

The inside measure of this house was 30 by 30. It was built on a good solid cement foundation using upright logs two storeys long. The logs were plastered inside and out and this meant that the inside of the house was so smooth that it was covered with fine flowered paper. The floors were hardwood both downstairs and upstairs.

The house was furnished with a wood

cook stove that circulated through the firebox and into the tank and Mrs. Brown was ensured of hot water, even boiling hot water, at any time. The well was a distance from the house and almost 200 feet deep. A three horsepower engine was used on the pump. Water was taken by wagon in eight gallon cans and left in the house so Mrs. Brown was always assured of a supply.

There was a large deck on the north side of the house where Mrs. Brown had a washing machine powered by a small water cooled gas engine with a long belt.

In later years, when radios came to be known, the Brown family bought one of the first radios in the country. It had shortwave and they were able to reach England with it.

In 1927, when King George would be addressing the empire on the anniversary of Canada’s 60th birthday, Mrs. Brown invited the school children to come to their home and sit on the floor in front of this great big box. None of them had ever seen or heard a radio before and now they were listening to King George the Fifth addressing the Empire.

Mr. Brown purchased a high quality Percheron mare. Her first four foals were King and Cyrus and Major they were greys.

have foals, she found a pail in the yard that had grain in it that was treated with strychnine for gophers.

Mr. Brown purchased some pure bred Holstein cows and raised a big herd of dairy cows.

In 1910, the business of Brown and Gibson went broke. They moved to the farm and built a barn for the huge herd. The milking was done by machine.

The barn was 100 feet long with cement floors, watering bowls at each stall. The barn was completed up to the extension of the rafters, but it stayed that way. No roof was ever built.

After Mr. Brown had gone out of business and the cattle were all dead and even Mr. Brown in fact was dead, a big wind blew the barn down.

They built a silo. It was reputed to be eighty feet high, made of incredibly long timbers. There was a metal roof on it and you could see that landmark for many, many miles.

I used to stop to think about what a job it would be to fill a silo back in those days when the only power he had was a little Fordson. They separated the cream using a little engine. This cream was kept cool and taken into the creamery in Vermilion. Two cans would be tied together over the top of Mr. Brown’s Model T Ford. Unfortunately, one day the rope broke and 16 gallons of cream went out onto the road. There were no hogs kept on the Brown farm, so the surplus milk could not be disposed of in an economical way. It was poured out on the ground.

Much of the work on the farm was done by hired help. On this one day, a young Englishman by the name of Billy Little led the bull out to drink alone. Later on in the day, someone from Brown’s borrowed my father’s old army rifle to shoot the bull in order to retrieve the young man’s body.

Mr. Brown, having moved his family to the farm, had to find some way of getting his children an education. For the first few years, the older two children Cordy and

Lucille, rode to Vermilion, a distance of 6 miles, on horseback on one horse, but they had to stay at home during the winter time.

So, without delay, the Browns formed a school district.

In 1914, unable to have a school built, they purchased a log settler cabin that was no longer in use. G.J. Arthur had a cabin on the northeast corner of 32-51-6. It had a good big window and a shingled roof. Bill Croft, with his four big oxen, was hired to move the building to the school site.

The first children enrolled in that school site were the four Brown children, Cordy and Lucille, Grace and Ken, Winston Merrick, Walter Robinson, Gladys and John Wilson, Ethel, Bruce, Alice and Hannah.

In 1919, a very dry year, the winter came on the 8th day of October, with very little feed. Many people purchased all the feed that they could until the banks refused to loan them money because the cattle they were feeding became worthless.

In happier times Mr. Brown told us that in the fall of 1919 he had 28 big Holstein steers full grown that had never been moved to market. He had been offered 11 cents a pound for them, but hadn’t taken the price.

Those steers, along with all his other young livestock, and a very large percentage of his milking herd died that winter of starvation.

In the spring of 1920, I saw their carcasses lying on the hillside. Some of the black and white animals still had bells around their necks.

Mr. Brown almost didn’t recover from that loss. It was a terrifying loss, but, as I mentioned earlier, he took a job later on as a secretary of the municipal district. He was then able to carry on as before, and that’s when he bought a radio.

Mr. Brown and his family all moved to B.C. The families that I had known are now dead. I’m sorry. They were friends.

Mr. Brown was a pioneer of pioneers, a good friend, a good neighbor, and we will certainly miss him.

It appears it ’s a nice day to go play outdoors, today as I write this, four Celsius and the snow is practically gone, even a sprinkle of rain out there, more weird weather this year.

By this time last year, I didn’t like to leave my truck too long or I may have not seen it again until spring as it is entirely snow camo and the snow was already two feet deep with huge snow drifts.

I would like to see just a couple inches of snow, it brightens up all our dark surroundings of our outdoor world, it also aids in hunting if one is still seeking adventures.

This week is nearing the peak of the deer breeding season or rut, as we call it.

This is when we see bigger bucks standing in wide open fields with their “pants down around their ankles.” Of course we don’t mean literally, it’s a term used to describe the bucks when they have one thing on their mind as they seek romance.

It’s amazing how they seem to elude fear and common sense during this time of year. They become absolutely careless at this time and vehicle collisions are at their highest.

Around The Campfire Yesterday, as I drove to one of my favorite bow hunting spots, there stood one of the biggest Mulie bucks I have seen this year, in the middle of a wide open field.

All his attention was concentrated on the six mule deer he attended, along with chasing off a smaller buck that was also interested in the girls. He was totally oblivious to anything else, including that “fear and common sense” factor. Something that gets even us humans in a lot of trouble and has also been the demise of many.

Now, as this buck was majestic, I would like to see him around next year.

At the end of bowhunting season our mule deer tag is expired unless we have the mule buck hunting tag draw, which was another of the many draws I didn’t acquire this year.

Now this big fellow, only 100 meters off a main road, in a wide open field, with antlers that stood out like a crown of jewels, might as well have big targets painted on either side of him. It was only a matter of time, so I thought I would be of assistance to his longevity. I slowly drove near him to make him aware of the dangerous situation he was in, in a non-harassing manner, but he totally ignored my vehicle.

I tried to slowly herd them towards the bush line and into safety like a herd of cattle, thinking at least one of the female

deer would have the common sense that us males lack so much.

As the deer moved off, he would circle them and try to prevent them from leaving, it was actually comical to watch. I just parked in the center of the herd and watched as finally one doe trotted off and the rest followed, with the love sick buck at the rear.

They went into the thick bush and were safe at least for the moment and hopefully this evening but come morning he would be on his own. Soon the whitetail bucks will be as bad in the fear and common sense factor also.

Although I didn’t need the snow to tell me the story and adventure of these deer, the tracks can tell me a lot of information on what the deer are doing, as well as all the other critters out there. I am always looking at tracks in my adventures. Moving from one area to another, I saw some unusual small tracks alongside a back road.

The tracks were unique as they were small and had a drag mark centered behind them as the critter waddled along the roadside, these track went on for a half mile, and intrigued me. So I got out and followed them while analyzing them. It was obvious to me that these tracks were made by a muskrat, and the drag marks behind it were from the long rat like tail.

The name muskrat arose from the rat-like resemblance and musky scent; however the muskrat is not a member of the common rat family. The muskrat is considered a semiaquatic rodent and spends most of its time in water. The long tail is not actually round, but long and flat and aids in swimming like a fish’s back fin.

When you see ponds and big laundry basket-size mounds in the pond, these are muskrat lodges or nests. They, like the beaver, live under the ice and in these lodges during the winter when ice forms.

Knowing the area, I know there is no water source where it was headed, which puzzled me as the nearest water was the pond where it came from and this wasn’t the time of year for “house hunting” in a new neighborhood. It must have been just out for a long walk, although I know better as muskrats are a favorite snack for many predators. It must have been just another case of lack of fear and common sense.

Get out there, be safe and use some of that common sense!

When the Smoke Clears Being afraid and scared is a sign of common sense. Being afraid of nothing is a sign of being a complete idiot.

Islay Auxiliary Fundraisers Ruth Shaw Submitted

Islay Hall was filled with activity on November 1 as the Islay Health Care Centre Auxiliary sponsored their sixth annual Craf t Fair and Trade Show.

oils to purses. There was something for everyone, including a well-stocked bake table courtesy of the Auxiliary m e m b er s. Lu n c h, i n c l u d i n g s o u p, sandwiches and desserts, was served by the Auxiliary.

The craft fair and trade show is one of two major fundraisers held by the Islay Auxiliary. A garage sale in the spring is the other fundraiser. The funds obtained are basically used to maintain and operate the Handi-van that is owned and operated by the Auxiliary for the use of residents and their families. The money raised is also used to buy items for the Health Care Centre such as electric beds, pressure mattresses, quilts, an automatic outer door, a wheelchair, a geriatric chair, and other items as they are needed.

The planting and maintenance of the outside garden is done by the Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary began in 1970 with 22 members, one of the first things the volunteers did was sew pajamas for the residents. Currently the Auxiliary consists of 12 members from many walks of life, three lifetime volunteers, one associate volunteer and eight active volunteers. Hunting With Jim Franklin Wolters Columnist

We a l r e a d y h a d three beautiful lit tle d aughter s so I bet their Mother a hundred dollars she probably wouldn’t have a son when she announced we were expecting again.

May 6, 1968 early morning, James Franklin Wolters arrived and I was impressed with his alert business like way he had about him as he looked for his first meal. He was like a coiled spring full of energy just bursting to get at things. It seemed just a few shor t months and he was circling a coffee table and shaking it to make it go. By the time he was about two he was already chasing a golf ball around with a little hockey stick I made with a piece of broom handle. By the time the second year was out I had to take it away from him as the golf ball was like a missile bouncing around the

house. He was a danger in the house, so I made a small ice rink outside and got him skates. By four he had a sweater his Mom knitted with Baby Orrs’ number four on it. He could stick handle a puck all over that rink and never seemed to tire! About that time I had acquired a .177cal air rifle that had to be cocked by levering the barrel down and then loading it. It took a good bit of strength, but little Jim sure wanted to shoot that gun. Soon he could hit targets like a pro and I could teach him the basics of gun safet y and handling. All that came to a head when somehow he shot himself in a finger while loading it when he was in a bit of a hurry. The little pellet went in the ball of his middle finger and lodged at the tip just under the skin.

To say he was in pain was like saying red hot steel might burn you. I remember after some serious coaxing, I took my pig castorating scalpel and nicked the skin to let the pellet out. I didn’t need to remind him about being careful again, EVER.

Well he soon graduated from the air rifle, I guess I wrote about him laying in a blind and shooting magpies and he accounted for many pests around t h e ya r d . T h e r e wa s a s t r i c t l aw about what was a legal target and he was a good son. Anyway I acquired a nice little Browning lever action .22 about then and of course mounted a telescope sight on it. Soon there were n o En g l i s h s p ar r ows, b l ac kbirds, starlings or any like pest. He simply was an incredible shot, his hand and shar p eye c o - ordination made aiming almost instantaneous.

A n y w a y, I s u d d e n l y f o u n d I w a s always running low on ammunition and by that time Jim had voiced he’d sure like to try his hand at deer hunting. Well, when I was fifteen I had my own Marlin 30/30 and so I guess I felt he was ready. Jim fell in love with the Marlin, he liked the lever action and of course I helped him sight it in and it was a deadly combination.

walked out into the Old Coulee and to ok tur ns pushing bush an d then walking in the open in case a deer came hopping out. I was taking my turn pushing the coulee side bush, Jim was walking about and suddenly there came two quick rifle shots not necessarily a good sign, but I soon got on the tracks and Jim says we’ll have to make sure and not leave a wounded deer, first law of hunting.

We were pussy footing along and Jim says “Dad.” There through a tangle of bush was a buck deer standing , he was looking for the doe he’d been separated from. Jim was behind so I took the shot and we had our first d e er to g et h er. S o t h e n I h ad t h e oppor tunit y of showing my son the basics of dressing out a deer.

Brought back memories of when my Dad and I shot a deer so many year s before. It was a memor y to keep. Thanks Jim!!

He’s had his deer almost without fail every year since.

Horticulture Society Honours Van Wageningen Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Vermilion Horticulture Association celebrated its thirtieth anniversary on November 20 at the Anglican Church hall with a potluck supper and slide show presentation by Albertha van Wageningen.

After the meal, members and visitors were taken back in time through the photos and narrative presentation by past president and long-time member, van Wageningen. Photos of original members and executives as well as field trips to many places including the Lois Hole Greenhouse as well as local gardens, brought back m e m or i e s an d g i g g l e s am o n g t h e crowd in attendance.

The original purpose of the organization was to help obtain and share gardening information which was not as readily available thirty years ago.

This helped bring together those people in the area with a common interest in learning about gardening.

The organization was responsible for purchasing books on gardening in the prairies, which they in-turn, donated to the Vermilion library for the general public to access.

Members of the group would also travel to attend the Alberta Horticulture Society’s annual convention and in 1990, the Vermilion organization

hosted the convention which was held at Lakeland College. This provided the networking and resources to learn more about hardy prairie plant varieties and shrubs. “ Times have changed,” said van Wa g e n i n g e n i n h e r p r e s e n t a t i o n .

“Gardening information is available everywhere and information is at our fingertips.”

Although gardening is not a dying p a s s - t i m e, va n Wa g e n i n g e n s a i d memberships have declined in the past number of years. A number of the club’s projects have been taken over by the Communities In Bloom organization, lightening the load for the Horticulture Society’s remaining members.

As van Wageningen completed her presentation, her formal announcement of her retirement from the group was honoured with a round of applause.

The annual meeting followed the thirtieth anniversary celebration the new President was named with Kim McMinnis filling the chair for the term.

McMinnis is also ver y involved with Communities in Bloom in Vermilion.

During the meeting Alber tha van Wageningen was also given an Honorar y Life Membership in the club in recognition of her 30 years of continual work in the club and the community.

The cashier and the bagging assistant talk about the pros and cons of hosting a garage sale. Finding myself in what seems like a perpetual mode of unloading excess goods, I listen with interest.

The consensus between them is that “around here, it’s almost not worth the trouble anymore.” In an economy like the one we Albertans have enjoyed for several years, people don’t bother so much looking for bargains or used goods. We have, ac cording to the grocery market duo, so much money that we just go out and buy it new if we need something.

This pronouncement remains with me as I push the cart, with my reusable grocery bags packed with products, to the parking lot.

It returns the next time I survey the boxes full of possessions deemed no long er ap pli c able in the life of my family crowding our garage. It seems wise to consider my options.

To garage sale or not to garage sale, that is the question, albeit not really an urgent one----it’s only November.

Enough Stuff But one thing always leads to another.

I confess that I am not an efficient shopper. Probably, I am not a shopper of any kind. I make a list. Then I procrastinate - - - -the length of time allot ted for procrastinating varies.

Eventually, I head out to the place or places most likely to carr y what by then (as a result of the procrastination) I might desperately need, and have a look. If it ’s clothing, I limit searches to a maximum of one hour and tr y-ons to around three or four items. If it’s household goods, I allow about ninet y minutes and a ma xi mum of three options before I decide on a purchase. If there’s no success within those parameters, the quest is delayed for some future, unspecified date. A surprising number of “needs” turn out to diminish in importance over time.

When it comes to clothing, I quietly hope that my sister, a muc h more adept shopper than I, periodically buys something in my size, style, and colour by mistake and then waits too long to return it so that I might become its default beneficiary. In another life and circumstance, I would just hire a personal shopper. I should have b e e n m o r e at t e n t i ve i n my g r a d e

eight sewing class. Sorry about those crooked seams and my overall lame output, Ms. Duckworth.

You’d expec t that a per son who admits to being a reluctant shopper would accumulate fewer possessions.

A person who only shuffles around retail shops when necessary shouldn’t be able to amass so much that it ’s ne c es s ar y to sor t throug h exc es s possessions, categorize and then box them up either to be donated somewhere or else displayed in spring in a dimly lit garage hoping other people will show up and take it away one lonesome item at a time in exchange for one dollar or less.

Yet , Fe n g S hui d o e s n ot re s i d e here. Three times in the past too few years, my charity of choice has sent its volunteers to gather up “stuff” for re-distribution. And still there seems too much, more than is usable by our small family. It concerns me, this overaccumulation of goods. Should I open a store? Am I lurching slowly up the dark path of the Hoarder?

When I ventured out to a hardware store this week for an item that’s been lingering on my procrastinator’s list of needs, I noted all the Christmas goods twinkling at me from the shelves as I

entered. I admire the skill of whoever is responsible for the display. Dazzling. I know we’re rapidly approaching that season retailers depend upon for the year’s best revenue. I bear the enticers no malice. Christmas is big, profitable business.

It’s a relief though, to recognize that I feel relatively exempt from the enticement, from the frenzy. It’s not that our household will be gift-free this Christmas. Giving is lovely at any time. But giving is about so much more than the exchange of piles of consumer goods.

I can confirm that, even without the items lazily carried for ward on my procrastinator’s list, I have more than enough stuf f. Bearing that in mind helps keep a lot of things in perspective all during the jolly season.

Rustlers Complete Needed Sweep of Vikings Tom Groat Submitted

The Rustlers men’s basketball team moved up the ACAC standing s by taking two games off the Augustana Vikings. The Rustlers defeated the Vikings 67-57 Friday night and 69-58 Saturday night.

Friday night ’s game in Camrose saw the Rustlers struggle offensively early in the game trailing the Vikings 17-7 after the quar ter and 30 -22 at half. The second half of the game was all Rustlers as the green and gold outscored the Vikings 45 - 27. The Rustlers big men provided most of the offense in the second half. Coach Tom Groat was pleased by the play of his posts, “Evan (Halyk), Jake (Hawboldt) and Stephen (Jones) really stepped up their inside games. I think that was the difference in the game.” Jones was the top scorer with 19 points and received the player of the game award.

The Rustler s g ot a mu c h bet ter star t Saturday as they star ted the game on an 8-0 run only to see the Vikings comeback and score the next 10 points. The first quarter ended with the Rustlers holding a slim 22-21 lead.

In the second quar ter the Rustlers demonstrated some outstanding defense limiting the Vikings to just 6

points giving them a 39-27 half-time lead. The Vikings tightened the score to 47- 42 midway through the third quarter but that was as close as they would get as the Rustlers received key baskets from Halyk. “Evan is starting to play really solid at both ends of the court.” Groat commented. Halyk finished the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds and was named player of the game for his efforts.

The Rustlers season record improves to 4 - 6, good enough for 4th place in the nor th division. The

Getting ready for the holidays of ten includes Christmas baking. Many of the cookies, squares , cakes and desserts are off limits to someone who must eat gluten or wheat free. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat and other grains in which various individuals have an adverse reaction too.

Gluten Free Carrot Cake 1/4 cup honey 3 room temperature eggs 1/2 cup butter or coconut oil 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1 teaspoon vanilla Zest of 1/2 lemon

Dawns Eats

1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 100 grams pecans 1/4 cup coconut flour 2 cups grated carrots Line an 8 inch round cake pan with wax paper: fit the wax paper sheet into the pan and cut off the excess.

Using an electric egg beater, beat together the eggs, honey and coconut oil.

Beat in the spices, vanilla, baking powder, baking soda, lemon zest and the lemon juice. In a small food processor or coffee grinder, grind the pecans until they are a small crumb. Stir the freshly ground pecans and grated carrot into cake batter.

Pour into the prepared cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Turn the cake on to a plate and carefully peal back the wax paper. Ice the cake with cream

Innisfree Delnorte School Hands Out Hardware Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Students of Innisfree Delnor te School were acknowledged for their past year’s work and dedication as the school’s annual awards were handed out last Friday evening in the gymnasium. Innisfree school administrator Nadia Melnyk, served as hosted for the evening event.

In addition to the Honour awards, Rural Crime Watch poster contest w i n n e r s a n d G r e e n C e r t i f i c ate, a number of scholarships and bursaries were handed out to some well deserving students for their high academic marks as well as athletics.

The Terr y Sharon award, named after the former Innisfree Social Studies teacher, was awarded to student Kristin Bergman. This award is given to the 2013 -2014 Grade 9 student with the highest Social Studies mark.

The award will see Bergman attend a week-long trip to Edmonton to take in events in the Alberta legislature.

Fowler is currently attending Lakeland College in Vermilion taking Agri Business while Hlus is taking the Animal Science program also at the Vermilion campus.

The evening ended with the singing of “God Save The Queen” as family and friends of the students congratulated each of the recipients.

Gluten Free Brownies 1 can black beans 3 eggs 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar depending on desired sweetness 1 Tablespoon instant coffee 1/3 cup oil, such as light olive oil or coconut oil 1 Tablespoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate baking chips Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Drain and rinse the black beans. In a food processor or blender combine the black beans, eggs and oil, add the remaining ingredients

except the semi sweet dark chocolate chips. If you don’t have a food processor or blender, then you can mash the beans with a masher, and then stir in the remaining ingredients. The semi-sweet chocolate chips can be stirred into the batter or sprinkled on top before baking. Pour into a greased 8 x 8 baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. This is great served warm with vanilla ice cream or cold. It can be un-iced or iced with a chocolate butter cream frosting. When served cold, this is a very moist cake, that you can enjoy guilt free. Since there is no flour, this cake would be suitable for those that are intolerant to gluten or grains. For diabetics or individuals with blood sugar/ carb problems the sugar in this recipe can be substituted with 1/4 cup maple sugar and 12 packages of stevia.

Part of a new generation of Albertabased songwriters who have been nur tured on the tapestr y of sounds that country music served up in the sixties and seventies, Hus points to many life experiences and the influences of family and specific musicians when it comes to assessing his own make-up as an ar tist. “ I look up to Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, and road dogs like Fred Eaglesmith.

Then there’s all the people I meet out on the road and the stories that come with those introductions,” said Hus. “I’m drawing on my sources of inspiration for the songs more clearly than ever, and these songs, from the title track to Nor th Atlantic Trawler and Red River Flood, just seemed to write themselves,” added Hus. The summer of 2009 saw the lanky and likeable artist tapped to back the legendary Stompin’ Tom Connors on a number of dates across the nation.

“I’ve been looking for 30 years for a young guy who’s proud to write songs about our countr y. I’d like to pass the torch to Tim Hus,” Stompin’ Tom Connor said.

“It’s not a secret that Tom is one of my heroes and it was quite the time out on the road with him. I could tell you all sorts of stories, but we’ll leave those

Connors made his appreciation for Hus’s songwriting skills known as the two parties played before large and enthusiastic crowds that were served up a double - barreled blast of true blue Canadiana. On many occasions Connors let it be known, to friends and fans, that he believes Hus is the man he is passing his mantle to.

Mannville School Works Up A Sweat Susan Obrigewitch, Mannville School Submitted

The Kinderkids are enjoying their early morning gym sessions this year. The Kinders start their workout with a quick lap or two followed by various stretches and exercises. They discuss how their bodies work and why activity and exercise is necessary to keep our bodies healthy. They mix in math skills by counting forward and backwards, and using the activity dice. They also make letters with their bodies and review their previous letter of the day by participating in an activity that begins with that letter - H - for hula hoops, R - relay races, P - parachutes. It’s all fun and games.

Grade 1 and 2 Phys. Ed. class with Miss Rachel Miller have been working on basic

locomotor skills and listening to instructions with rapid fire games. They have also learned basic skills like serve and bump in volleyball and dribbling in basketball.

The Grade 3 and 4 Phys. Ed. class with Miss Nicole Cusack has been busy playing games and working on different skills.

They wrapped up a unit on volleyball in November. They learned how to do the forearm pass, the overhead pass and the underhand serve. The students enjoyed many volleyball-like games to practice their skills. They have also been learning and working on their fundamental skills. One of the favorite days in gym class are the Fabulous Fun Fridays, where the students get to play their favorites.

In Grades 5-8, (back to Miss Rachel Miller) students have been focussing on team building and strategy as well as volleyball and basketball. Each day students

also work to improve their personal fitness with fitness circuit training. Recently, they have done a physical fitness test and will track their progress on this test until Christmas break at which time they will retest to see improvement.

Up and coming in Phys. Ed. with Miss Miller and Miss Cusack will be skating and curling which start December 1.

This month Grades 9 to 12 Phys. Ed. classes with Mr. Starner will be doing a multi-games unit which consists of Handball, Soccer, Dodgeball and other mini games to keep students active and have fun.

Our school will welcome Shelly Smith from Telus next week. She will be engaging our Grades 1 to 12 students in a 30 minute discussion about how to keep their digital footprint clean, including respect-

ing themselves, respecting others, and protecting themselves and others online.

This presentation was arranged through VIBE. The Grade 4 class with Mrs. Amero has been busy. They have been practising their google applications and each student made a slide on a dinosaur of Alberta for their first unit in Social. They are now learning about the natural regions of Alberta and students will be researching one of the six regions of Alberta (Rocky Mountains, Parkland, Grasslands, Boreal Forest, Canadian Shield and the Foothills). In Art the Grade 4s had a great time making Duct Tape Wallets.

Vermilion Junior Super League Curling Rocks Roll Jenaya Swyripa, 12 years old, threw her rock in the first game of the season. She has been curling for four years. L L C S t u d e n t s O f f e r e d A LT E C H Ambassador Opportunity Students of Lakeland College in Vermilion were provided information on becoming an ambassador for EMF, a company who says is committed to delivering innovative, quality on-farm solutions to livestock and grain farmers. The program is offered to the students and if selected, the students are awarded a $500 honorarium for their work in public relations and development activities. The ambassadors will participate in outreach and community events with EMF during college nights, career fairs and other informational programs. Matt Einarson, Managing Director for EMF Nutrition, presented a slide show on the company and what products it delivers. He then explained the ambassador program and took questions from ambassador hopefuls. Student Ambassadors applications can be submitted online, along with resumes and two letters of recommendations to the EMF, which contact candidates for the interview process. National Child Day Performance Janice Jones Submitted

Vermilion Kids Connections in conjunction with the Vermilion Public Library and Midwest Family Connections celebrated National Child Day with a performance by special guest, Mary Lambert who currently resides in Calmar, Alberta and grew up in Kingston, Ontario.

The music concert was interactive and enticing for both the children aged zero to six and their parents in attendance. This performance took place at the Vermilion Public Library on November 19 and was followed by an evening performance in Lloydminster followed by another performance the next morning.

For the second year, VES was part of the Guinness World Challenge for the most people speed stacking at multiple locations in one day. Our staff and students participated in this event on November 13 during the school day and helped break the 2013 Guinness record.

Intramurals for speed stacking began on November 3 and will run the entire month on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Meet And Greet With Dr. Fernando

“We rely on people like you to keep us informed,” Ruth Gray told a Vermilion Voice reporter when asked if she would be in attendance at the meet and greet that took place in both Mannville and Vermilion November 15.

Ruth Gray and others have reasons they are unable to attend events like the meet and greet and they expect the local newspaper to keep them informed. Although our newspaper takes no political stance other than offering support to current elected officials, we would like to offer our audience an equal opportunity to read about their options in the upcoming election, which will take place between December 15 and 20.

The local PC Candidate Shannon Stubbs brought Dr. Fernando and his daughter to the meet and greet in both locations to give people in our community the opportunity to ask Stubbs what she stands for and to express any complaints and misgivings people may have.

As the meeting began, Stubbs admitted she knew most of those in attendance had come to visit their long time doctor and friend Dr. Fernando and his daughter Allison. After her speech, audience members approached Stubbs to congratulate her on bringing up some great points and told her they were impressed with both her character and values.

Stubbs has lived in the new boundaries of the Lakeland riding for most of her life.

“I have been active in both federal and provincial politics for many years. I was an early and active supporter of the Reform party, volunteering with local MP Ken Epp, where I grew up and I had the opportunity to intern in Preston Manning’s office in Ottawa while I completed my University degree,” Stubbs said.

Allison (Fernando) Boychuk, Dr. Fernando’s daughter, introduced Stubbs to the audience. She has known Stubbs for approximately 15 years as Boychuk was one the vice presidents in an Edmonton riding. Stubbs and Boychuk volunteered to help with the planning and delivery of provincial and federal political events, met during campaigns in both the Edmonton and Strathcona areas, and worked together during policy committee meetings. They are both U of A graduates and although they didn’t attend university at the same time, they have many common connections to people there.

Dr. Fernando was a doctor in Mannville from 1968 to 1990 and still has many clients who come from Mannville and Vermilion to see him at his Edmonton office. He is still practising medicine and does a lot of business with both Apple Drugs and Long’s Value Drug Mart in Vermilion. Politically, Dr. Fernando has done a lot of work with the Conservative Party and was a PC candidate for the Edmonton SW division in the year 2000 where there were also Reform and Liberal candidates contesting.

Albertans equal access to Medicare. While Stubbs worked as an executive assistant for Danielle Smith, she engineered an emergency debate to bring the airport issue to the table in a timely manner.

As Stubbs told a story of her experiences in 4H and expressed her support of the excellent opportunity 4H provides to its members in learning how to deliver speeches, she seemed very understanding of the farming lifestyle.

She later explained, “as a farm kid and the oldest of five, I had to extend my degree and work part time to put myself through school, so I was fortunate to work in the constituency office of Reform’s first

MP, Deborah Grey, during school and for a while afterwards.”

Stubbs expressed a strong concern for the undermining of Albertan values, which she fears could happen with current attacks on our rights and freedoms coming from abroad recently. She also expressed her strong support for the current Canadian Prime Minister and his goals.

“I supported Stephen Harper for the leadership of the Canadian Alliance and then of the United Conservative Party of Canada in 2003. Frankly, I think that Stephen Harper has been the best Prime Minister in my lifetime, and perhaps that Canada has ever had.”

Lakeland Alum Cashes In 3.94 GPA Lakeland College Submitted

Moniek Okkema’s great marks in Lakeland College’s university transfer program continue to help her save money at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S).

After earning a grade point average of 3.94 out of 4.0 at Lakeland during the 2013-2014 academic year, Okkema transferred to the Saskatoon university to continue pre-veterinary medicine studies. Because her Lakeland average exceeded 85 per cent, she automatically qualified for a $2,000 U of S transfer scholarship.

While preparing for midterms this fall, she received another unexpected financial boost – an additional $500 scholarship for having the highest average of all Lakeland students who transferred to the university this academic year.

“Until I got an email from the U of S, I wasn’t even aware that there was a scholarship for the top transfer student from Lakeland. It was a nice surprise.

These scholarships are definitely helpful,” says Okkema, who is enrolled in five pre-veterinary medicine courses at the university.

The 19-year-old chose to start her studies at Lakeland College because of the college’s small class sizes and the short distance from the Lloydminster campus to her family’s farm southeast of Vermilion.

“I enjoyed attending Lakeland. The small class sizes definitely helped me with the transition from high school to university courses. I knew all of my professors which made it easier to approach them with questions,” says Okkema. Many of

her current U of S classes have more than 100 students. At Lakeland the average first-year university transfer class size is 26.

Okkema recently spent a week job shadowing at the Vermilion Veterinary Clinic, a reference requirement for entry into veterinary school. In December she will apply for admission into the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The star scholar hopes to be among a select group of people to be admitted into veterinary school after only two years of university courses. If she’s not admitted next fall, Okkema will continue working on her bachelor of science in animal bioscience degree and apply to veterinary school again in the future.

Stu d ent s in t he S LDS par t-t im e program will develop skills in conversational level ASL and gain a better understanding of Deaf culture and the Deaf community.

ASL 101, the fir st c our se in the program, will be offered Jan. 5 to Feb. 25 followed by ASL 102 from March 4 until April 27. Students participate in online classes Monday and Wednesday evenings and online labs Saturdays as scheduled.

“During the past few years numerous people have asked us about online options because they were unable to relocate to Edmonton where we offer the program at the Alberta School for the Deaf,” says Joanne McDonald, chair of human services programs at Lakeland College.

Seniors Lodges Get $160 Million Boost

The federal and provincial governments will direct $160 million over four years to support major renovations or replacements of seniors lodges outside of Alberta’s major urban centres.

As the demand for seniors housing units grows in smaller communities, this multi-year funding commitment from the Canada-Alberta Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-2019 will support renovations and

additions to rural seniors lodges. The Alberta government will work with housing management bodies to complete a full evaluation of seniors lodges to determine priority projects. Nearly 70 per cent of all seniors lodge units are in communities outside of Alberta’s major centres.

The IAH is an example of provincialfederal collaboration to improve the quality of life of Albertans. For seniors, it means ensuring they can stay in their communities, close to family, friends and neighbours. The IAH was extended earlier this year and will provide $202 million in joint funding for seniors housing through 2019.

This year is the 19th Annual Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner, which has been taking place at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre. The entertainment star ts at noon and dinner starts at 1 p.m. on Christmas Day each year. People who would like to attend

The Christmas smorgasbord almost ceased to be in 2005 when Ron Moses p a s s e d away, b u t t h e c o m m u n i t y enjoyed them so much they requested Lynda Moses to continue the tradition in his memory. It was then renamed the Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner.

TELUS is coming to Mannville, Vermilion, Clandonald, and Kitscoty to teach people of all ages about their digital footprint.

TELUS WISE is a unique educational program focused on Internet and Smartphone safety to help keep families safer from online criminal activity such as financial fraud and cyber bullying. This program is available free-of-charge to all Canadian adults/parents, educators and kids. Canadians can participate in TELUS WISE with two unique programs: TELUS WISE and TELUS WISE footprint.

TELUS WISE is a program for parents and educators, which provides access to: 1. Seminars-TELUS WISE Ambassadors host one hour public seminars engaging participants in a discussion about Internet and Smartphone safety and security. These seminars are also available upon request for TELUS business customers, community investment partners, parent groups and community associations. 2. A WISE virtual community – www.telus.com/wise is a secure website that provides users with ongoing access to great resources, articles and training around Internet and Smartphone safety and security for their families, and 3. TELUS Learning Centres - Learning Specialists in more than 300 of our exclusive TELUS locations, provide personalized, one-on-one guidance to customers on Internet and Smartphone safety and security as a part of our Learning Centre program.

TELUS WISE footprint (www.telus. com/wisefootprint) is an online digital citizenship program for kids ages eight through 18. This program provides a multi-faceted experience for Canadian teens and tweens to learn how to become good digital citizens and keep their digital footprint clean. There are also some great ways for kids to earn dollars for their school’s digital literacy programs while they learn. We also host TELUS WISE footprint sessions in schools for students to engage in a discussion on

keeping their digital footprint clean.

TELUS WISE would not be possible without ongoing collaboration with our partners. We are honored to have the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) endorse the TELUS WISE program Here is the schedule for the presentations that will take place in our local areas: Please feel free to come and see a presentation. On November 26 from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at St. Jerome’s School, and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Vermilion Elementary School, and from 2:25 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at J.R. Robson High School.

There will also be a presentation at the Vermilion Public Library at 7:00 pm on November 26. Then on November 27 at 8:45 a.m. the same presentation will take place at Clandonald School and at 11:00 a.m. at Kitscoty Elementary School and at 12:30 p.m. at Kitscoty High School.

Specifics about the TELUS WISE session we will be hosting for adults at the Vermilion Public Library: this session will be approximately 45 minutes in length and is an interactive discussion about how we can keep ourselves, our families and our communities safer online. Here are the topics covered: What it means to be part of a rapidly growing digital society; Internet safetystarting with understanding how our kids interpret the Internet/what to watch for, cyberbullying, important social media tips, computer safety tips; Smartphone safety and security.

We also hand out tip sheets during the session so participants are able to engage in the conversation. This session is for young adults, parents through to seniors.

We have reached over 450,000 Canadians to date with TELUS WISE. We have hosted TELUS WISE session for adults and TELUS WISE footprint sessions for kids all the way from Grande Prairie to Lethbridge and in-between. In Loving Memory Of SPICER, Herbert(Herb) Ivan, born December 10, 1927 in Islay, Alberta, passed away on Friday, July 04, 2014 in The Vermilion Health Centre at the age of 86.

Herb is loved and remembered by his Beloved Companion, Dora Fitzpatrick, Children: Wendy Spicer of Lloydminster, Ron Spicer of Clandonald & Rhea(Brent) Maxwell of Lloydminster; Grandchildren: Kevin(Tammy) Doull, Eric Spicer(Bailey), Matthew Spicer, Lyndon Spicer(Jolene), Brenden and Colby Maxwell.

Great Grandchildren: Allysa and Graeson Doull, Alex and Kaylin Spicer. Extended Family: Myrna Fitzpatrick(Carey), Lyle Fitzpatrick(Donna), Kathy(Marty) Miller, Elaine Fitzpatrick(Jim), Terry(Greg) Meiklejohn and all their children. Funeral Service was conducted from the Dewberry Herb Spicer Community Hall at 2:00 pm of Wednesday July 09, 2014 1927 - 2014 officiated by Pastor Brian Stiles. Tribute to Herb read by Brian Stiles composed by Herb’s Family. Special Musical Selection by the Mennonite Youth Group, Soloist Bonnie Robinson(Niece)/Jean Bowman Pianist performed “In The Garden”. Music Selected by Family: The Dance and Go Rest High on the Mountain. Hymn – “Amazing Grace”. Interment at Dewberry Cemetery, followed by Lunch at the Dewberry Hall. Active Pallbearers(Grandsons): Kevin Doull, Eric, Matthew, and Lyndon Spicer, Brenden and Colby Maxwell. Honorary Pallbearers were all of Herb’s Family and Friends.

Creeches Funeral Services(Harry, Alma, Kim and Monique) administered the Funeral Arrangements.

Herb was raised and lived in the Riverton District along with two older Sisters Aerial Braithwaite and Iona Berg. Herb was predeceased by his Parents Bob and Ina Spicer, Sisters Aerial Braithwaite and Iona Berg, and his wife Dorothy. In 1933 Herb started school at Riverton and this is where he met his lifetime friend Graham Hansen in Grade 2. They went to school together there, up until Grade 8 and then finished their Grade 9 by correspondence at the school. Graham and Herb shared many adventures at school and after, they remained close friends throughout Herbs life.

This past winter when Herb was in Camrose Hospital, Graham visited him almost daily. The two of them had a good time reminiscing about the past. As a young man Herb worked for numerous farmers in the district.

On August 4, 1950 he married Dorothy Cunningham their union was blessed with 3 children Wendy, Ron, and Rhea. When they were first married, for a short time they lived in a tent just west of the Spicer Homestead, then Uncle Joe built a one bedroom home for them to live in.

This is where they lived till 1957 when they bought the farm known as home today.

In their early years of marriage, Herb worked in the bush in the winter and farmed in the summer.

Herb was also a partner with Henry Carlton in a Grain Truck hauling business. Herb had a backhoe co. and did work in and around Dewberry putting sewer and water lines in. Herb owned Gravel Trucks and also hauled coal for Dewberry and Marwayne Schools. He also hauled gravel for the County of Vermilion River. Herb became a partner in a gravel crushing business known as E.M.D. Crushing with Bill Fleming and Neil Jones. They sold the crusher in 1977 and that’s when Herb began farming full time.

Herb provided a safe, loving home for his family. When he would come home from trucking Ron and Rhea always snuck out to his truck to see what kind of goodies he had in there. Herb had quite a sweet tooth so the kids always found something. Often when he came home from crushing Rhea would find a stack of pennies on the China Cabinet in the morning. Back then pennies bought a lot of candy.

Herb never raised his voice or his hand. If he had something to say, he would speak to you in a certain way and you would listen. Herb was very proud of his Children and all his Grandsons with all that they had accomplished. He loved his family genuinely beyond words.

When Dorothy passed away in 1996, Herb was very lonely and lost. However fate blessed him with a second chance in life when he and long-time friend and neighbor Dora Fitzpatrick became a couple. Dora and Herb really complimented each other. They had a lot of fun sharing conversation and life on the farm. The biggest difference between the two of them was Herb loved to shop and Dora didn’t. Herb was very lucky to have two families who loved him very much.

Herb loved to Fish, Fly, and Hay those were his three favourite pastimes. He made many fly in trips to Wineford and Christina Fishing Lodges in his Cessna 172. He loved to take family and friends along and there are a lot of stories and special memories that they have of their experiences. Dorie Lake became of of his favourite places to visit and fish. Herb held a pilot’s license for 49 years. Herb made the decision to sell his plane and give up his license when he was 84 years old.

Everyone I’m sure remembers if they ever flew with Herb, a time when he would go into a slow climb unknown to the passengers and then drop the plane out from under you. The feeling was like a roller coaster ride. Lots of big eyes and giggles. He would just smile and say “what?” and carry on. Herb was a wonderful pilot and many of us were able to experience this with him whether it was just to go up for a quick flight around home, fly in fishing, Father’s Day Fly-In Breakfasts in Lloydminster or over pastures up North. We will always remember these times as they were very special to him and he talked about them often.

Herb spent lots of time with long-time close friend Larry Bensmiller flying, fishing, and most anything. Those two were always up to something. Larry took Herb for his last plane ride over the Lea Park Rodeo this past June. Herb thoroughly enjoyed this flight.

To his family and all who knew him, he was truly the ultimate example of a Good Man. As Myrna said upon his passing the mold is broke. His winks and smile will live on in our Memories.

Thank you to all who helped out and visited with Dad this past year when he was in and out of the hospital. A big thank you to Graham Hansen for your daily visits to Dad while he was in the Camrose Hospital, the conversations, reminiscing of past years made time there so much easier being away from home and thank you to Larry Bensmiller for always being there for Dad and us. Thank you to Dr. Maulud and Dr. Lowe along with all the Nurses of the Vermilion Hospital, you made the time in the hospital so much easier for Dad. It's the little things you do that make a person's stay so much better, your smiles and conversation mean so much. We will never forget the surgical glove bouquet that was given to him on his 86th birthday in the hospital he thought that was something else. Thank you to Brian Stiles for officiating and reading the Eulogy for us. Thank you to the Mennonite Youth Choir and niece Bonnie Robinson along with Jean Bowman for the musical selections performed at the funeral.

Thank you to the Greenlawn Ladies for supplying the lunch. Thank you for all the Donations made to Friends of Vermilion Health Complex, Dewberry First Responders, Dewberry Cemetery Fund, and the Cancer Society. Thank you to all the Grandsons for being their Grandfather's Pallbearers.

GET ENOUGH CLEARANCE TO THE WALL. CAN YOU EXPLAIN A LITTLE ABOUT SHIELDING THE WALL TO REDUCE THE CLEARANCES?

A: There is a provision in the B365 part of the code for reducing clearances

on wood stoves. This provision is called shielding. To comply, a wood stove must meet certain clearances from the closest walls. If the label says the stove needs 15” of open space behind it and distance is only 10”, this means the stove is not compliant and should not be used. You can however shield the wall to reduce the required distance up to 66%. Here are the basic rules of shielding. A shield must be made of a material that is non–combustible such as 26 gauge or heavier steel plate or tile or stone to name only a few.

Depending on the material the reduction % will change. The shield must; be supported on non-combustible spacers at least 7/8” long (away from the wall), be placed 1 - 3” off the floor, 22” above the appliance and 18” past the sides of the stove. The shield will reduce the 15” requirement to 7 ½” or 5” depending upon the shield material.

Vermilion Rock played away from home against the Wainwright Rustlers on November 15. Shortly into the first period The Rock’s Steve Simmons scored the first goal of the game, but the Rustlers were ahead by two goals by the end of the first period. Though the Rock made a great effort to catch up by scoring two more goals in the second period, they couldn’t keep up when Wainwright’s Rustlers did the same, then followed up with a third

goal in the second period. Rock ’s Steve Simmons and Randy Simmons scored another two goals in the third p er i o d, but t hi s wa s n’ t e n o u g h to catch up to the Rustlers who scored one more goal leaving the score at 7 to 5 for the Rustlers, who are third in the team standings. Sitting in sixth place in the standings, The Rock will have a chance to catch up in their next home game on November 25 against the Rustlers. St. Jerome’s Pep Rally

Mr. Sean Whalen, speaker throughout the pep rally, outlined many of the sports accomplishments St. Jerome’s students have to be proud of this year.

The Marauders Football club won the first round of playoffs and the St. Jerome’s Cross Country team traveled to Cross Country meets at Riverdale, Vermilion Provincial Park, Bud Miller Park in Lloydminster, Zones at Métis Crossing in Smokey Lake and Provincials at Okotoks.

Anna Ulrich won first in Zones and twelfth in Junior Girls ASAA Provincials.

St. Jerome’s Junior Boys Golf team traveled to Wainwright to participate in the ECACS Junior Golf Tournament. Senior Boys Golf finished fifth in the Zones and Kade Myshak won gold and went on to provincials in Calgary. The Senior Girls Golf team finished second in Zones.

Junior Girls Volleyball team won six gold and four silver medals this season.

The season finished with a gold win at Counties and the East Central Catholic Championship and two other gold medals.

The Grade 6/7 Junior Boys Volleyball team were champions in Mallaig and Racette, placed second in Glen Avon and won their pool home tournament, but lost in the semis to the Grade 8/9 boys.

Junior A Boys Volleyball team played eight tournaments placing first twice and they placed second three times. Their season finished with a win during the Highway 16 Championship.

Senior Girls Volleyball had 19 players so they were broken into two squads to give more playing time to all the players: a JV team and a Sr. team. The JV team won one silver and two bronze medals and the Sr. team won four gold, one silver, and five bronze medals.

Senior Boys Volleyball had a team of 14 players. They finished second in St. Paul, first in a tournament in Mallaig, second at the St. Jerome’s tournament, and first at the Marwayne tournament. They went on

to defeat Mannville in Districts and won the Zone championships in Plamondon winning every game they played.

J.R. Robson Girls VB Won Zones

J.R. Robson Senior girls volleyball went to a total of eight tournaments this year, including zones. The first tournament of the year for J.R. Robson was Megavolley, a 36 team tournament. We finished the tournament with a Bronze medal on the B side, defeating St. Mary’s in the Bronze medal game. St. Jerome’s was the next tournament, where we battled hard, but lost in the bronze medal final against Medstead. Our third tournament was J.P. Percy Page, we lost out in the semi-finals, but we saw a lot of growth in our team over the course of this weekend. Dewberry was next on the tournament schedule, where we won and took home gold against Marwayne. The 5th tournament took us to Wainwright, where we played Grasslands in the gold medal final and came out victorious. The next tournament was in Lloydminster, where we lost out to Holy Rosary of Lloydminster in the

quarter final. Our seventh and final tournament before zones was in Vegreville, where we lost to St. Jerome›s in the quarter final.

Zones Summary: We played Assumption Crusaders in the semi-finals, winning a hard fought battle in 3 sets. The gold medal game was against Vegreville St. Mary’s, which went to another 3rd set. The girls battled hard and were able to come out on top.

Brief summary of the girls: We have 11 girls on our roster this year, 7 of which are Grade 12’s, with 4 Grade 11’s. ost of our girls have been playing together since Junior high, whether it is during school season or club season. Layne and I have been coaching most of these girls for 3 years now, so we have been able to watch them grow not only as individual athletes, but as a team as well. This season they have shown great dedication, passion, and motivation, which we believe has resulted in us going to provincials, and we couldn’t be more proud.

101st Anniversary For Lakeland College

Lakeland College In 1913 This is a photo of the 1913 Lakeland College Vermilion building, which cost about $45,000 to build. The photo was one of many put on display in the College cafeteria on November 17.

Lakeland College’s Cathy Wolters was a committee member for Lakeland College’s Centennial celebration, which took place last year. On November 17, this year, she was among those who offered students, staff, and visitors a slice of cake and decorated the cafeteria. Between 250 to 300 slices of cake were handed out.

This has been an annual event since their 97th Anniversary to gear up for the Centennial celebrations last year, and so the tradition continues.

Photos ranging from 1913 to the 1980s were on display and Wolters offered an explanation of each.

One of the photos showed Lakeland College’s original main campus building called the Vermilion School of Agriculture Building which was in use until about 1967.

At this time, the Bentley Building had its official opening.

The next major redevelopment project was the Trades Building.

The Alumni House, which was built in 1911 as a farm manager’s house, is one of the only original buildings still standing.

Another original building is the barn, which was moved to the agricultural grounds in about 1982 to 1983.

Vermilion was one of three locations in Alberta to be chosen as a school of agriculture in those early years.

Practices and game time have paid off for the Vermilion Tigers who left the audience in awe after their November 21 win.

After scoring one goal in the first period and three goals in the second, the third period began with a 4 to 0 score for the Tigers.

There were a total of 15 shots at the Tiger’s net throughout the game as compared to 55 shots against the Chief’s goalie. Three more goals were scored throughout the third period bringing the scored to 7 to 0 for the Tigers. The game ended with a sigh of surprise from the crowd at an eighth goal being scored by Craig Wilkinson with only 1.3 seconds left in the game.

The St. Jerome’s Senior Boys Volleyball team finished first in their pool. They beat Bassano, Thorhill, Rundle Academy from Fahler and New Norway then went on to win gold in the finals. They beat out Rosemary in two sets in the finals after defeating Bassano in the semi-finals. The last time the Sr. Boys won was 30 years ago in 1984 when our coach Al Rogan was in Grade 12. St. J’s Sr. Girls VB Bring Fourth Place Plaque Home St. Jerome’s Girls Spartans headed to Caroline, Alberta to compete with ten other teams during the Provincial Tournament for 1A Girls. With some stiff competition, the girls made it to semi finals beating the Senator Gershaw Gators. They then advanced to finals taking a tough loss to Bawlf. The team showed great sportsmanship and Jessica Kingston was honoured with an ASAA Sportsmanship Pin for the tournament.
