Living Water College Film Premiere

Living Water College offered a film program from July 6 to August 2 this year which resulted in a Student Film Short Premiere at the Derwent Recreation Centre on November 1. Two students came from Calgary, one from Grand Prairie, one from Whitecourt, and three from Derwent.

Living Water College began, as Kenneth Noster, president of the College said, when they “saw a need for young people who have a gift and want that gift to be utilized as fully as possible. In order for that to happen, they need to be whole people. Much of what we see in the arts is being produced by people who are fractured in their life. They produce emotionally, but what they produce is not attached to their intellect or who we are.”

The Film Premiere on November 1 began with the Italian words “Se qual cuno...fa qualcos a?” In English this means, “What if somebody...did something?” and it is a quote from Blessed Guiseppe “Pino” Puglisi who was assassinated because he told people the truth and showed them a true and fruitful way to resist and combat the local Mafia.

The five short films that were shown afterwards depicted a wide variety of stories around one common goal: how to transform the world through media. The first short film, produced by Faith Daumler, was called “Scars” and depicts a young lady who is being stalked. After she is murdered, she reappears in a beautiful spirit world.

The second, titled “Off the Path” and produced by Lynnaya Schieck, taught an important lesson about what not to do when lost in a forest.

The third short film, “Raven” produced by Amy Myshak, spoke to the hearts of people who have been discriminated against because of their gender.

produced by Rolland Godin told the story of police officers trying to discover the identity of a serial killer who, it was discovered, was one of them. “Roman Around College” by Maximilian Spiess was the last film shown.

In it, a modern youth encountered a person from a different time period, then awoke wondering if it was all a dream.

In the end, the audience was taught the importance of working to accomplish their dreams.

“It is important to do things in collaboration with one another,” Noster announced, which was a theme that was exposed during the question and answer period with the students, “Taking the ideas of thinkers and discussing them with others helps people to see what they see. The opening of the mind comes through this process, which helps to nurture all we do and increases our faith. Oftentimes we think it is faith versus thinking, thinking verses art, when all three aspects must be joined together in daily life to be truly successful at all of them.”

Eric Spoeth, a local professional film producer and the College’s Summer Film Program Director mentioned that film making can be a very lonely art form, a director commented, but the way the film program was organized in Derwent’s Living Water College of the Arts made the student producers feel connected to one another and challenged them to grow in their weak areas by allowing them the opportunity to try out various areas of film-making.

Some of the students say they came with an idea for a film, but almost all of their ideas transformed or changed in some way before they began filming. One of the challenges of writing a story that one of the students mentioned was being stubborn when others suggested improvements, when the writer didn’t want make them even if the suggestions would make the script flow better.

said that she learned that if we try to keep our ideas to ourselves until they are perfect, they will never get polished. “Sharing our ideas with others is when the polishing process starts to happen.”

Jake Scmiedicke, an independent film producer from the United States and the Liberal Arts instructor at the College’s Summer Program offered his suggestions to the students regarding the importance of good story. When one of the students asked if most script writers have to rewrite their scripts seven times, Jordan’s response was, “No. Seventy times seven.”

This program, it is hoped, will become a ten month program in the next couple of years, explained Ken Noster. This would give the students more time to create both a

more polished end project and a longer film.

One of the producers mentioned that every minute of film is at least a month’s work. Most of the students agreed as they pondered and discussed their pre-production and production stages which were quite limited compared to the post-production stages which were, in some cases, still not yet complete by the time of the Premiere.

Additionally, the College Program this past summer provided the opportunity to work on Eric Spoeth’s professional film set for the DocuDrama entitled “Waiting for Waldemar.” Eric is still shooting some portions of the documentary and hopes to have a trailer for them completed by Christmas 2014.

Poppy Day For Vermilion Cadets Nicole Crossan Reporter

November 1 was Poppy Day for our local cadets as they went to Tim Hortons, Lakeland Mall, and the Co-op Grocery Store rather than to each store in the community this year because of the new regulations that were put in place after the shooting in Ottawa.

September 27-28 Cadets from the Vermilion Corps competed against 120 cadets from Alberta and Northwest Territories on the weekend of September 27. Nitasha Irvine explained, “Our 6 cadet team competed against 19 other army cadet corps from around Alberta and NWT. We did not place in the top 3 but did very well in all the test stations. On September 27 some of the skills that were tested were: map and compass, setting up

September 28 our cadets had an opportunity to shoot a variety of rifles: Daisy air rifle, 22 Lendfield, and for the older cadets, the C7 semi-automatic rifle.

Vermilion rcMP: autopsy results An autopsy has been completed on the body of a deceased male who was found outside of a bar in Vermilion, Alberta in the early morning hours of November 2nd, 2014. Based on the results of the autopsy, foul play is not suspected. The name of the deceased is not being released.

Fatal Motor Vehicle collision Near Minburn Ver milion RCMP, EMS and Fire

Departments from the surrounding area, responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision on November 5 on Highway 16 between Range Road 94 and 95 near Minburn, Alberta.

A pickup truck was believed to have been traveling west bound on Highway 16, when it lost control and rolled. The truck was then struck by a semi transport truck traveling East Bound. The lone male occupant of the pickup truck died as a result of the collision and the driver of the semi was unharmed.

The highway’s west bound lane was closed and traffic was diverted onto the east bound lane as the RCMP Vermilion Detachment members and the RCMP Traffic Re-constructionist investigate the collision. At the time road conditions were believed to be a factor.

The male driver of the truck has yet to be identified and the name will not be released pending notification of next of kin. The west bound lanes were reopened to traffic just

before 11 a.m. that day.

Pedestrian Safety Month The month of November will see increased focus and enforcement in the area of pedestrian safety. As part police enforcement efforts, Vermilion RCMP members will be paying closer attention to areas where there tends to be more pedestrians. One area to keep in mind locally would be around the Co-op grocery store on 51st Avenue with the new building going up and the reduced parking available.

Most customers will need to park across the street and use the crosswalk but with reduced visibility and less room due to equipment and fencing this may prove difficult for some.

During school hours pay attention to the school zone crosswalks to ensure safety for the pedestrians which are often younger children.

Members of the public are reminded to make sure that you make eye contact with the person behind the wheel of a vehicle to ensure that they see you before you enter the crosswalk area. For those members of the public that are driving vehicles please be sure to give the pedestrian the right of way and ensure they are safe before entering the crosswalk area.

Keep tint off the side windows and the front windshield and make sure that your windows are clear of frost or snow will help with the visibility between driver and pedestrian and hopefully keep everyone safe.

Remembrance Day At VES chaplain reverend Major aubrey Bell, cD The bag pipes were followed by a moving appeal by Chaplain Reverend Aubrey Bell, CD who spoke to the children of the heroes not only of the past, but also of today. He pointed out that today’s soldiers, school trustees, teachers, and even the children themselves can be heroes if they want to be. He gave an example of a teacher who put the children behind her and faced an armed gunman. His message was that we can all be heroes, we just have to choose to stand up for others whose well-being is in jeopardy. Photos Nicole Crossan.

VES remembrance Day choir The program ended with three songs sung by the VES students as a thank you to the guests for coming. The song “Standing Strong in the Truth” sung by the Grade 3 to 6 classes spoke about loving one another and forgiving what happened in the past because we are all brothers and sisters. In this way, the song continued, we can leave a footprint everywhere we go. “Yesterday’s for giving. Today is just for livin’. Say a prayer every night for tomorrow.”

While I sit here in my own personal little bubble and live in a peaceful countr y where I have never personally experienced a war on my homeland, I can’t relate to the families of war who are affected each and every day. I do, however, feel the need to join with my community on Remembrance Day to remember the fallen and the men and women who currently serve in our military during times of war, conflict and peace-keeping missions.

Every day you hear and read in the news about the conflicts in other countries, both Iraq wars, 9/11, the war on terrorism in Afghanistan and now

the latest ISIS terrorist group in which Canada is currently trying to help fight against.

I can’t begin to imagine the worry and heartache the families and friends of our military have to face knowing their loved one may not return, the sadness and emotions they must feel when they are informed their loved one won’t be returning home, at least not alive.

Then I think about the effects of war on the men and women who serve, the everlasting memories and trauma they see on a regular basis during conflict.

I sit here and wonder what it would be like to walk a mile in their shoes, to see what they see, to feel what they feel, the knowing that at any moment you may have to take another person’s life even though it is necessary to keep your

own self alive. The mental and physical torture each member of our military has to endure just so I can sit here and speak my mind, walk peacefully down the street and not have to be worried each day about my security and freedoms.

I know some people will say it was their choice, they chose the military life, they gave the worry to their families, but it is the most selfless act a person can give. They did choose this life and they chose it to help protect each and every one of us, they chose it so we can have all the freedoms we have in this country.

Do they deser ve our respect and remembrance on November 11? Absolutely.

My Mom lost a brother to the Second World War, is that what makes me feel

as though we should hold this day with the utmost of respect? No, not really as I never personally knew my Uncle.

Remembrance Day is a day to take the time to remember and say thank you. If you wish to attend a ceremony to show your gratitude to the fallen and the members serving currently, there will be a Remembrance Day service held at the Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m. with the parade starting at 10:45 a.m. Also, the Poppy Campaign is underway and all donations made to the campaign go back into the community to help Veterans and their families in need of assistance.

Stand tall shoulder to shoulder and show our Veterans that we are so very thankful for their service to our country and lets’ remember the men and women who have lost their lives protecting us.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, I belong to Operation Legacy, which is made up of members and graduates of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program and is dedicated to teaching the younger generation about Canada’s military heritage.

Remembrance Day is special to me

and to Champs across the country as The War Amps was started by veterans who returned from the First World War missing limbs. They were there to support each other and then passed on their knowledge to amputee veterans returning from the Second World War. They then created the CHAMP Program

to assist young amputees like me.

On November 11, I will be thinking about all the sacrifices that men and women have made and continue to make for this country. It is a day to be thankful for their service and ensure what many had to suffer and endure does not happen again. Through Oper-

ation Legacy, I have given presentations to young people to spread the message of remembrance.

Benoit’s message concluded with the statement, “Peace has no merit if the cost is oppression.” Matthew Pulyk made a video titled, “Standing on the Shoulders” that finished with the words, “In memory of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo.” The Grade 5 class did a choral recital of the poem “In Flanders Field” and the Grade 4 class led the crowd in singing “God Save the Queen.”

November is upon us, a month that we Can ad i an s s h o ul d be all prepared for but it seems being human we also have to adapt and even acclimatize. I simply would rather sleep like a bear.

Although it hasn’t been that cold, forecast is for colder days ahead, and I just grow tired and sleepy, until I acclimatize myself until my chores are only pushing snow and cutting firewood.

November 1, the opening of the general hunting season, saw myself helping a friend find and fill a long awaited moose draw tag, it was an outstanding day almost too warm.

However, the moose were coop erating as we seen 14 moose before 10:00am morning cof fee time, they seemed to be everywhere, my friend Te d wa s b e i n g a l i t t l e l e t ’s s ay… choosy, for that perfect moose.

He also was determined to harvest the moose using the old black powder rifle, which makes rifle hunting a little precise, which we found was a fine line between being successful or hungry.

Many of the Bull Moose were in pairs, one group of bulls numbered three in the bachelor herd, a good sign that the rut or breeding season was/ is over, a good thing for motorists on Alberta highways.

At this time the moose are generally harder to find, but they sure were numerous on this opening day, over half of them were in that 50 inch antler class moose also.

After that morning coffee we only saw our first cow moose and her calf, then it was like all the fell off the face

Around The Campfire of the earth, we couldn’t find one even to be choosy with.

November 2 was the complete opposite of the previous day, it was colder and raining when we rose at “dark thirty” long before the sun, something we were not going to see on this day.

At the sun rise or more like a dim daylight that seemed to take forever, the rain turned into that white stuff with a vengeance, within an hour our world was a white out with 6 inches/15 cm of wet snow.

And the snow wouldn’t let up, it took us until 9:00 am to even find our first moose, this guy was a real comical looking fella with antlers just over a yard or metre, he had an unusual long bell or beard.

It was over two feet long and swung to and fo with his matter of fact strut, and after he stared at us out of curiously fo 10 minutes, he ran off bucking, side stepping and with skipping like stride.

The next couple weeks will be prime time not only for deer hunting but also for vehicle collisions on our rural roads and highways as the deer rut or breeding season approaches.

The deer have been slow in areas, meaning they haven’t been moving much, the Mule deer rut usually starts first followed by the Whitetail deer, so until than the whitetail bucks remain

The best approach to removing ice on the walk is to never let it get there in the first place. If you have a downspout that drains onto the walk you should redirect the water overhead so it drains on the grass on the far side of the walk. Put a post in the ground and place the downspout on it. Draining water on the walkway is a fall looking for a place to happen. As to ice melts I do not know of any particular brands that will not eat away the concrete over time. Salt based ice melting products are very hard on the walks and the lawn for that matter. It is best to control the water in the first place. If you must use salt do so sparingly.

It has been a weird year as far as the animals movements are concerned, un pre d i c t a b l e an d s p ot t y at b e st , unusual in many ways…for example we saw a pair of Robins in that snow storm.

Not that it was so late in the year, as they are usually sitting on a sandy and sunny beach down south somewhere by now, as many of us wish we were.

It was just because they looked so comfortable in the heavy snow falling, hopefully they know something we don’t, mind you they could have just arrived from slightly north of us.

Because as I drove home from the hunt I had to fight deep slushy snow on the highway from near Czar, with truck in 4x4 and a death grip on steering wheel, it was a brutal drive on pavement.

That is until I reached highway 14 then all the snow disappeared and there wasn’t a flake on the ground, which I was thankful for as that kind of driving is very stressful.

Last evening I went for a drive, and although we have had no snow here the snowshoe hare, bush rabbits and even the weasels have transformed into their pure white winter coats.

I am going to ignore that sign of nature and think of sun filled days, I am still going to venture forward with a bow in my hand although this is open rifle season, I have a few spots where rifle hunting isn’t allowed.

So the ad ventures will c ontinue until the end of November, the month to remember, or of remembrance at least.

The Consequence Of Plenty Franklin Wolters Columnist

In my youth, I can remember so many dry years when the pile of grain in a granary wouldn’t ever reach all the corners, but if the crop exceeded the capacity of your bins, you’d be forced to construct a makeshift storage if you didn’t want to simply make a pile on the ground. It seemed that by the time the elements and varmints got a share, and some would be lost on the ground, you’d have made a fair down payment on a bin anyway.

Thing was a good crop didn’t happen too often way back then and who wanted a lot of empty bins standing around? As I remember, there was a decided lack of any extra money so a temporary bin was usually made from materials close at hand and were also cheap. We’d go to the bush and select little poplar saplings of about ten feet tall and about two inches in diameter.

These were spaced in a circle about two feet apart around the perimeter of the bin.

As a site was selected, a rope was

fastened where the middle would be and a radius selected to determine the bin’s size and a mark was made in a circle so you could punch a hole with a crow bar and place your uprights. Now you had a choice of several strands of barb wire stapled about six inches apart all the way around. You can imagine the danger of being around all that barbed wire, so, if you could find it, you usually used page wire instead.

Later on, I remember seeing snow fence appearing in a bin, probably some that had been set up along a road and it got lost somewhere. Anyway, you needed a jag of bundles preferably green feed so you could feed them later when the bin was emptied.

Of course, someone had to stand the bundles up as the grain came in and hopefully the bin would hold the yield of the field.

As time went on, the temporary bins evolved different methods and materials and different ways to get the grain out were experimented with too. Brother Elmer and I used our Allis Chalmers round bales standing on end with many strands of number nine wire snuggled around to hold the weight of the grain.

One time, we tried three bales high, nine

feet, and were just putting what was to be the last hopperful on when...you guessed it...the bin broke and we had a wheat avalanche. We made two smaller bins and the deer came from miles away to clean up what was left after we scraped up the rest.

One hellacious mess!

I should mention we made a bundle stack on the top to shed the rain and snow.

Later still I lapped 3/8 plywood and put quarter inch bolts to hold them together. It was made by stacking the plywood sheets and drilling them all at once with a long drill I made.

I had a power converter in my pickup so I could use power drills and electric wrenches to put the bins together.

Usually about twelve sheets. I made one sheet with a loading hatch so I could get out of the bin after we’d stood it up and the guy inside that held the inside bolts needed an escape route. Once the bin was filled, I used my “Welger” bales to stack on top and complete the job.

Once winter, I had a bin of wheat across the coulee and never checked as it was hard to get to. Come spring there was a distinct trail leading to my bin and I discov-

ered that a notch in the ground left a little place the deer had found and made a wonderful self feeder out of. They probably had helped themselves to fifty bushels of wheat. I guess I got that much joy from having them around.

Nowadays we see so many wonderful hopper bottom bins with rows of them on nearly every farm. Grain is handled in such large quantities at such speed it’s hard to imagine the toil of shovelling a load on a wagon by hand.

Anyone traveling the country now is probably aware of the long white sausages lying out along the ground in fields seemingly all over. The speed with which these can be filled and emptied is truly remarkable and not one kernel is touched with a shovel.

I hear a few stories about deer making self feeders of them and now that ravens are out and about they can evidently punch holes and help themselves, but it seems the labour we used to think normal is a thing of the past now. Thank goodness for that. now all we need is a novel way to salvage the plastic as it’s, I hear, a one-time use.

Like they say, “What will they think of next?”

returning some natural functions lost to historical alterations on the land. With this guide book, we can now start doing some of what has been suggested. This is a complex task and will require cooperation from many people, organizations and governments.

The main idea is to meet the Government of Alberta’s goals under Water for Life – Alberta’s Strategy for Sustainability (2003): safe, secure drinking water; healthy aquatic ecosystems; and reliable quality water supplies for a sustainable economy.

With this in mind, on April 30, 2014, in Two Hills, the Vermilion River Watershed Management Project was born. It has set out a four year timeframe (20142018) to tackle the five goals (Fig.1) of the plan. Under each goal are recommendations and under each recommendation are specific actions. In all, there are 19 recommendations and 54 actions.

Water samples were collected in July, August, and October this year, at seven sites in the Vermilion River and two sites in Stretton Creek. When my youngest son was a wee boy, he would express his approval of a person new to him by saying “I like his face” afterward. It was his way of saying “he’s okay” or “he doesn’t scare me”.

Kids, at least until they’re given reason to withhold what they think, pronounce judgement with unwavering clarity. They tell it like it is. In a way, the early childhood penchant for truth is not unlike that exhibited by canines. Dogs often sense what we cannot: underlying fear or mal-intent, for example.

Or kindness. We ought to pay more attention to the natural responses of kids and dogs. They perceive truths to which we’ve become oblivious.

No one can be categorized as entirely good or evil. It’s a matter of degree or balance. If we could track ourselves through every moment of every day and then somehow transfer those observa-

What Rises tions into a visual, we might find evidence of how much depends upon how we manage choices. Even the most saintly among us must endure challenges. Except for those few who have mastered the art of quieting the endless inner dialogue most of us experience, we walk through this life constantly presented with options, a great many of them originating from what I refer to as ‘the idiot inside’.

Because each one of us is born into a unique environment and nurtured in accordance with factors as varied as the number of stars in the sky, the behaviors we’re capable of exhibiting are infinite. It’s simpler, though, if we can categorize people. Keep it black and white. Categorization and labeling is how we make sense of our world.

Unfortunately, humanity is anything but simple and applying generalizations when assessing our fellow human beings is just plain unfair. We know better, but passing judgement----whether favorable or not so-----seems to be our default setting. Still, it’s in our own best interest to educate ourselves if

we aspire to become the best of ourselves.

At the very least, we need to ensure that the guidelines we use to determine what position on the continuum of good and not so good our fellow human beings occupy are guidelines with merit and not just baseless prejudice or reaction to an unidentifiable trigger.

We often rely on our observations (appearances), what we hear from others (hearsay), and instinct (what we think we know based on past experiences) in order to form an impression of another human being, at least until we have the opportunity to interact with him or her firsthand. We do it even with people we’re not likely ever to meet. Our ‘impressions’, over time, can morph into something that mimics authenticity. We can dupe ourselves into believing what may not be even half true about another person.

We get our information from everywhere now. Who can sort out what is true and what is only the unending yap of meaningless white noise? Social media crushes or exalts

the reputations of many, sometimes in the same day. We’re encouraged to “dance like no one’s watching” but the subliminal message has become more like “when you dance, everybody’s probably watching”.

The unseen watchers then decide how to spin their out of context observations in a blog somewhere with or without the ‘dancer’s’ knowledge.

There’s a cacophony of voices vying for our attention, including our own personal resident idiot who encourages us to do the wrong thing as often as possible. It’s an unending challenge but one worth adhering to: making the effort to choose truths to inform our judgements and decisions rather than rumor, assumption, or cheap, potentially harmful sensationalism.

Buttercup squash is a winter squash variety which looks like a small green pumpkin, with orange flesh on the inside. The orange flesh is full of nutrients including vitamin A, vitamin C, B complex vitamins and several antioxidants. Buttercup squash is also a source of omega 3 in the form of alpha linoleic acid.

You will notice that this pie recipe contains both turmeric and black pepper.

They have an interesting relationship in this pie, because the black pepper turbo boosts the antioxidant power of the turmeric by 2000 times. The spices in this pie are filled with beneficial nutritional properties.

vegetable shorting, because lard is made by melting pig fat in an oven, that’s all.

There is no need for processing. Vegetable shortening sounds like it would be healthy, but it is not. There are several chemical processes that are used to make vegetable shorting, which start with the base oils.

Processing includes washing the extracted oil with hexane solvents, which remove all the vitamins and antioxidants. The vegetable shorting is combined with nickel catalysts, hydrogen gas and finally chemically deodorized and bleached which produces a super white, block called vegetable shortening. It is clearly not a healthy choice, and is a leading contributor to diseases like obesity and heart disease, as cited by renowned fat expert Mary G Enig, PhD. Dr. Enig recommends the consumption of healthy fats such as coconut, butter and lard. To obtain the buttercup squash puree roast the cut open and deseeded squash,

cut side down in a baking pan with water at 350 degree oven until softened, about 35 minutes.

Buttercup Squash Pie Plain Pastry Crust for double crust 1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup lard (not shortening) 1/2 teaspoon salt 3-4 tablespoons iced water Put the lard and the flour into a bowl, cut or flake the lard using a knife, or a fork, or your fingers or a pastry blender to work the lard and the flour together. Add three tablespoons of the iced water into the flour mixture and gently mix until moistened.

Once the water is added do not over mix or your pastry will be tough. Divide the mixture into two balls and roll each ball of pastry out to fit a 9” pie pan.

Filling 4 large eggs 3 1/4 cups buttercup squash puree

1 can of homogenized evaporated milk 1 cup white sugar 1 Tablespoon cinnamon 2 teaspoon ginger 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/8 teaspoon allspice 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 2 tablespoons melted butter In a large bowl using a electric egg beater, beat the squash, then add the milk sugar and eggs. Add the rest of the ingredients, beat until well blended, pour the mixture into two 9 inch pastry or graham wafer pie shells.

Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes then at 350 degrees for 30 – 40 minutes. The pie is done when a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Cool and serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Vermilion 4-H Beef Club Report Paul Dahoy, Club Reporter Submitted

The Vermilion 4-H Beef Club held its reorganizational meeting on October 21 at the Vermilion Agricultural Society Boardroom.

This year our club has 21 members all ready to “learn to do by doing!” For the 2014/15

year our General Leader is Derek Jones, our Beef Project Leader is Terry Dahoy, and our Assistant Leader is Kim Roberts.

Our executive for this year is as follows: Club President: Brie Watson, Vice President: Charlotte Wasylik, Secretary: Mary Jo Roberts, Treasurer: Justin Chase, Club Reporter: Paul Dahoy, Historian: Ashley Jones, District Representatives: Megan Krys, Emma Cleland, Robert Watson, and

Brie Watson, Phoning Committee: Jayce Sweeney and Avary Hickman.

Our club will once again be running the Cleaver Kids program for children under the age of nine. Currently we have two Cleaver members with Paul and Shelley Corbiere acting as leaders for the group.

At our meeting we also discussed various club activities such as fundraising activities, community service ideas, workshops, and

field trips.

On November 2 our club held its Project Weigh-In day at Nilsson Brothers Livestock Exchange in Vermilion. Thanks to Mr. Stalwick and all the staff at Nilsson Brothers for allowing us to use their facility. Good Luck to all members with their projects!

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. in the Vermilion Agricultural Society Boardroom.

Local Teams Sweep First Annual Mulligan Tournament Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The first annual Striker Lanes’ Mulligan Bowling Tournament seems to have been a hit and it was local teams that took home the top prize for the weekend.

With 16 teams from Lac La Biche, Cold Lake, Vegreville, Sherwood Park, Edmonton as well as Vermilion, the bowling action got underway Saturday, November 1, all of

them competing for the more than $2,000 in prize money.

Taking the top prize of $800 was the Vermilion team consisting of Dave and Patti MacNeill, Dan Scully and Cory Sippola with a total of 5,553 points, but they would not be the only Vermilion team to claim some cash. Second place in the tournament went to Vermilion’s Bev Eyben, John Jorgensen, Norm Preston and Judy Maksymic who divided the $600 pot with a combined total of 5,336 points.

The Edmonton team with Lou Courtille, Jerry Theroux, Jocelyn Dearing and Todd Anderson claimed third with a total of 5,126 points to earn the team $400. Rounding off the tournament in fourth spot was also a Vermilion team with teammates Corinne and Matt Theiss, Ken Jamieson and Terry Carrothers taking home $200 with 5,103 points.

Striker Lanes owner Kim Abrams, said although the tournament was the first of its kind held at the bowling alley, it was a

success and will run again next year.

The next tournament to be held at Striker Lanes is the Best Ball Doubles which takes place of January 24 and 25 and anyone wanting to get in on the tournament can call Striker Lanes to register.

The bowling alley also holds regular weekly meets for its Club 55 Plus, Cash, Mixed, Youth and Ladies leagues with a few spots available for anyone wanting to join.

Opening The Channels Of Communication Between Parents And Children Jodi Simmonds, VIBE Coach Submitted

Communication is an amazing thing.

When done well, it helps us to share ourselves with others. We can let them know what our dreams are, how we are feeling, what might be challenging us, and what we need. It helps us to build new relationships and strengthen the ones that we have. Sometimes, even though we may have been able to tell our parents everything when we were younger, we might begin to struggle as we mature. Parents, you might have felt as though you could have snuggled up to your child just a few months ago and talked about anything, and all of a sudden, conversation seems strained and awkward. What can you do to keep the lines of communication open at a time when you might need each other more than ever?

Here’s an idea. Consider keeping a diary...together. Mother/daughter diaries have been popular for years. In these diaries, a mother and her daughter write back to one another, asking each other questions, or just talking about how they are feeling and what is going on in their lives. Fathers and sons may find this a helpful tool as well for times when you just can’t seem to find the words or when you are too overwhelmed to say what you mean or if the subject matter makes you uncomfortable. Journaling can be done after reflection so everyone can take the time they need to formulate their thoughts.

It also gives everyone some time to calm

down before communicating. Not only can journaling together be an effective communication tool, it can be an amazing keepsake in the years to come when you might be separated from each other either geographically or through loss. Journaling between mothers and sons, and fathers and daughters can work too so consider giving it a try.

Parents: This is very important.

Try to be non-judgmental when responding to your child’s entries. Even if you don’t like what they are saying, remember that they are at least communicating with you.

Get started slowly. Don’t dive right in to huge issues right away unless your child does. Try to ask questions about how your child is feeling and attempt to make this a safe place for them to share those feelings. Talk about your day, about your life at their age, things that you are looking forward to, or what you are passionate about, but also remember to communicate how much you love your children and all of the things that make you so proud to be their parent in addition to any concerns that you might have for them.

There are beautiful journals available for purchase, but don’t feel like you need to make a big investment to get started.

The investment is your time and effort. A simple scribbler can work. Some families may like to include artwork or little doodles to help with the communication. This journal is yours together so you decide what works best for you both.

Hockey, Recycling, Library, Addictions Awareness, And More Nicole Crossan Reporter

Town Council met on November 4 to discuss an agenda full of interesting items including the Vermilion Handivan Society, the popularity of Community Gardens and the possibility of opening one at a new location.

It was agreed that a proclamation National Addictions Awareness Week would be signed with Mayor Bruce MacDuff on November 6 to proclaim November 16 to 22 as National Addictions Awareness Week in the Town of Vermilion.

Other items on the agenda included the North Hill Park and Skate Park Development and whether or not to allow the PeeWee Girls Hockey Team to host a Provincial Hockey Tournament at the Vermilion Arena and Stadium March 19 to 21, 2015.

A discussion was held regarding if people

should be required to show their identification when they arrive at the Regional Waste Management sites was also discussed.

On this topic, it was suggested that the Recycling Depot host its Open House on the weekend rather than during the week to increase the number of people in attendance because there have been difficulties with people putting their recyclables into the incorrect bins. The Recycling Depot management want people to know that the office is open and people are welcome to stop in and ask attendants any questions they might have.

After some of the Town business was taken care of, Margaret Templeton, Chair of the Library Board and Stuart Pauls, Manager of the Vermilion Public Library, were invited to present their budget to Town Council at 7:30 p.m. In addition to presenting their budget, they mentioned a few issues that the Library needed to address.

One of the issues was that 33 per cent of the library’s users are from the County of Vermilion River, 60 per cent are from the Town of Vermilion, and 7 per cent are from various areas outside of the county, yet here is a deficit of funding for the library to cover their overhead costs for a variety of reasons.

Some of the reasons for the deficit included a lack of volunteers who are doing fundraising activities to support the library; requests for more support from the County are in limbo, and the library has started to provide family memberships that will be cost friendly and more convenient for families, but reduces the amount of income to the library for individual memberships and there are several regulars at the library that don’t purchase memberships.

In addition, people are using e-books which reduced the number of late fee charges because ‘with e-books, no matter

if the reader is finished with the book or not when the due date comes the e-book is finished with you,” Templeton explained, as they system automatically removes books from the user’s e-reader on the date it expires.

Another issue the library mentioned was that the basement, which is being used five days a week by various programs, hasn’t been renovated since approximately 1980 and needs to be upgraded. Many residents say that because of the lighting and use of space, ‘it feels like a tomb at night down there.’ This could be remedied with an upgrade that would separate the space into two rooms, change the flooring, and would include the installation of equipment to improve the air flow and humidity levels in the library’s basement.

Proposed Work Camp Near Blackfoot Submitted

At the Regular Council Meeting for the County of Vermilion River on November 4, 2014, Bylaw 14-29 for the purpose of Re-designation a portion of LBP:1-9821806 being on part of NE-2-50-2-W4M from Industrial (M) District to Highway Development (HD) District was brought forward for second and third readings. Council voted against the second reading of Land Re-Designation Bylaw 14-29.

The re-zoning was required in order to allow for the development of an open lodge work camp facility on 30 acres on the southwest side of the Hamlet of Blackfoot.

During the September 22 Council meeting the Bylaw was given first reading. On September 23 an Open House was held by the developers to review the project (with about 50 guests). National Addictions Awareness Week Mayor Bruce MacDuff signed the proclamation stating the Town of Vermilion recognizes that National Addictions Awareness Week will run from November 16 to 22. This is a time to not only inform people of the risks posed by addictive lifestyles, but also to encourage them to live healthy, Keily Stetson explained. Some ways Alberta Health Services-Addictions raised awareness this year were by handing out free coffee sleeves with positive messages on them, getting the mayor to sign a proclamation on November 6 and printing articles in the newspaper. Mayor MacDuff said he not only wants people to be aware of National Addictions Awareness Week, but after signing the proclamation, he spoke of how, many years ago, he had an addiction to smoking. His efforts to quit the habit were so tedious that he said it was one of the most difficult challenges he had faced in his life, “So don’t start smoking.” National Addictions Awareness week was called Drug Awareness Week back in 1980 when it first began. In 1987, the name change was agreed to and upheld by the Honourable Jake Epp, then Minister of Health and Welfare Canada. Today, this week is used to mobilize communities in efforts to work together towards safer, happier, and healthier citizens. Some of the most common addictions of our time are not only drugs and alcohol, but also tobacco, gambling, gaming, and pornography as well. Those who have overcome addiction have a chance to celebrate “the joy of an addictions-free lifestyle” an AHS news release stated. As Mayor MacDuff pointed out, this is a special occasion to divulge the age of a lady. Two residents of the Vermilion Lodge celebrated their birthdays together on November 7, but these were no ordinary birthdays. One resident, Ruth Gray, turned 100 years old

Timanson was born in Vermilion and lived most of her life in Dewberry. She has been living at the Vermilion Valley Lodge for the past 13 or 14 years. Having a 104 year birthday is nothing short of a miracle, Starke commented.

This was just the beginning of the birthday celebrations for Ruth Gray who was raised in Minburn and just moved into the Vermilion Valley Lodge two years ago. Gray also celebrated her birthday at the Mannville Recreation Centre on November 9 where Leon Benoit made a presentation to her after she had been congratulated by representatives from the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and The Town of Vermilion.

Self-Motivated Art Students Heartworks Studio owner, Cindi Plant, began another season of art classes for youth. Her class was so successful that she added another four weeks to give students longer to finish up their art projects. It was amazing to see how after a little instruction in guided drawing, an example, and an introduction to various materials and media, Heartworks Studio students took off with their own unique projects. “It has been enjoyable watching each student grow and learn,” Plant commented, just before she assisted Avery Atkinson with beginning a pink flower transfer while Casey Zayac watched how it was being done (as depicted in the photo). Casey Zayac was working on a picture of a magazine model she turned into a comic book character. Danielle Ostropolski was in the middle of creating a rainbow of metallic butterflies and webbed leaves. Ainsley Zayac carefully filled in the gaps on her ink pen art piece while Indira Speck transferred a peacock foreground onto her previously painted canvas background. Dicke’s Wicker Announces Retirement

Doreen Dicke, founder and owner of Dicke’s Wicker and Cottage Crafts, is retiring after 35 years in business.

Years before she started the permanent storefront, she flexed her entrepreneurial muscles in the Farmer’s Market in Vermilion selling cottage crafts—creations she dreamt up from her home workshop on the farm, w hil st e n c our ag in g h er d au g hter s to contribute. It was a true cottage and grass roots business. Doreen’s Mother, Florence Perkins, even got involved cro c heting wee hats that were combined with beautiful feather p in c reatio ns D oreen so l d aroun d Alberta. Her selling trips took her (and most often Ralph) to many towns and cities including Bonneville, Camrose, St. Paul, Lloydminster, even Calgary.

She then star ted home par ties selling wicker ware and gift items to homes around Vermilion, Wainwright, and region. She tirelessly carried her stock to homes for many years, and built her customer base with thoughtfulness, hard work, and vision.

As the business grew she starting selling in the centre of the Lakeland Mall (Thursday to Saturday), continuing to build her clientele and offering more diverse home décor and gift products. Customers began asking for more access and encouraged her to open a full time store.

The Mall proposed she star t a permanent space, and af ter muc h t h o u g ht a n d c ar efu l n e g ot i at i o n s, she opened a full time retail space in the Lakeland Mall in 1980, eventually expanding it to triple the size. An entrepreneur acting on the trends of the time, and on the passions she had for the wholesalers and suppliers she had built a rapport with, Doreen forged ahead with her business. The family attended many gift shows with Doreen bringing home a huge array of stock in, perhaps appropriately, the stock trailer and van, packed to the hilt.

She offered classes in jeweller y making, Christmas ornaments, and floral design (with daughter Darlene).

Enthusiastic customers enjoyed learning new skills and creating their own treasures to take home.

The mall was full of great memories: sister, Grace Hoyteniuk /Baker worked there as well as her Mother. It was a time you could stop in and visit, perhaps with a cup of coffee at the Mall restaurant. Doreen’s Dad, Jay Perkins, would come by often, bringing smoked fish for a special treat and visit with his daughter.

In 1992, Dicke’s Wicker and Cottage Crafts made the huge leap to the space she is in now downtown. Once the Robinson Store, she purchased the space from JP Berezon. She stared down 4800 square feet and wondered, “How will I ever fill this place?” She clearly has had no problem—Dicke’s Wicker is known for being filled every r ow an d u p to t h e c e ilin g. War Amps Sharing The Legacy Carol Johnson Submitted

The War Amps 2014 address labels are being mailed to Alberta residents starting this week. The theme, “Sharing the Legacy,” pays tribute to the link between those who helped start the Association and those who will carry it into the future.

Jenna, 16, is a right leg amputee and member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. In a letter accompanying the address labels, she writes about her special friendship with Bert, a Second World War veteran who lost his leg after stepping on a landmine in Italy.

It was amputee war veterans such as Bert who created CHAMP, which provides financial assistance for artificial limbs and holds regional seminars every year for child amputees like Jenna.

The pair have a tradition of laying a wreath together, on behalf of The War Amps, at their local Remembrance Day Ceremony. Bert says he is comforted to know Jenna will continue to spread the message of Remembrance and carry on The War Amps legacy of “amputees helping amputees.”

Lest We Forget–Three words we have spoken throughout our lives on November 11th to remember the men and women who fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy today. This year those words seem to bring forward a new chapter as we remember two men who were recently struck down on our home soil.

Having the enemy so close at hand is not new to Canadians as we have protected our country from invasion by land, sea and air throughout our great countries history. We are reminded that as a country there will always be a need to stand on guard in order for us to be glorious and free.

It is hard to imagine what soldiers go through. The stories we read do not include the sounds, the smell and the emotions of what the people go through. Civilians never truly understand what it is like to stand in battle.

Veterans will tell you it is like living in hell and I believe that to be true.

Today we take the time to remember those who lost their lives, those who were injured, those who came home and those who have come home suffering from PTSD. We think of the families who stood and watched them leave, received notifications that their loved ones wouldn’t be returning or welcomed them home with open arms.

Today we salute our current men and women who serve to protect us, we extend our deep gratitude and we show our appreciation for those who put their lives on the line for us today. As we gather together across Alberta and our great Country we join in saying, “Lest we forget, we will remember them, thank you for your service, thank you for your bravery.”

The Knights of Columbus put on a pancake breakfast fundraiser for the Armoury one year, Henry explained, “I went around and asked everyone if they knew the history of this building, but no one knew. Either it was before their time in Vermilion or it was here when they got here.”

Finally Henry found one person in the crowd who knew quite a bit about the history of the armoury, her name is Norma Donnelly. Her husband’s name was Lieutenant Lloyd McNeale Donnelly who was the first commanding officer at the Loyal Edmonton Regiment located in Vermilion. He was also a bank manager at the Treasury Branch here in Vermilion for many years, before they moved away. After he passed away, his wife returned to Vermilion and has lived here ever since. She is now remarried to Mr. Art Boggs.

Field Marshal Alexander is the person the Vermilion Legion was named after. He was one of the most famous British generals of World War II. His birth name was Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander and he was born in London, England and lived from 1891 to 1969. During WWII, Alexander “oversaw the final stages of the evacuation from Dunkirk and subsequently had high ranking field commands in Burma, North Africa, and Italy, including Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East and command of 18th Army group in Tunisia,” Wikipedia states.

On January 26, 1946, Alexander was designated by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King as the 17th Governor General of Canada since Canadian Confederation. He was also the last Governor General who was non-Canadian.

In early 1952, Alexander was asked to become the British Minister of Defence by Sir Winston Churchill, so he left his post as Canadian Governor General to take on this role. King George VI passed away that February, and in March 14, 1952, Alexander was given the title Earl of Alexander of Tunis, Baron Rideau of Ottawa and Castle Dreg and appointed by the new British Queen, to the organizing committee for the her own coronation. During the procession, Earl Alexander of Tunis carried the Sovereign’s Orb. The commissioning scroll Lieutenant Lloyd McNeale Donnelly received is framed and hangs in the upstairs room of the Armoury in Vermilion today.

This commissioning scroll was signed on 28 June 1946 by Alexander of Tunis shortly after he began his role as Governor General. Many believe this to be the first, or one of the first, commissioning scrolls ever signed by Alexander.

It was in 1962 that the request was made to name the Legion in Vermilion after Field Marshal Alexander. A few people in government positions squawked about that because it was not standard practise to name a building after someone who was still alive, Henry explained.

Alexander’s response was to resolutely state that it was not being named after his current name, Alexander of Tunis, but after his former military title, Field Marshal Alexander, which had died when he finished his work with the military. “If one were to draw a line from the location of Donnelly’s widow to the Armoury and back to the Legion it would create a perfect triangle that ties the history of these sites together,” Henry said.

Today, the Lt. Col. Craig armoury is used for the Cadets, Kuk Sool Won martial arts classes, Archery classes, Ham Radio transmitting and receiving, and other local events. The entire basement of the armoury is in the process of being renovated. One section, usually used by the gun club, is being renovated to meet standards for more types of guns, while other sections are used to store equipment and clothing for the Cadets. “I feel sorry for the other Cadet Corps that don’t have any place for storage,” Henr y commented.

A training room has been completely renovated. Lumber left over from the drill hall was used to create table tops inlaid with pictures from Vermilion’s military training history. This room was named after a very large contributor to the renovation project named Natasha Irvine.

Frank Molineux lived on a small farm in the Clandonald area with his parents Marion and Neville Molineux, two brothers and two sisters. Molineux’s father joined the army after he came to Canada from England in 1914 so he would be able to go back to Europe. He fought in France in WWI as a foot soldier and passed away in 1958.

Frank Molineux who was born in 1926 was 31 years old at the time of his father’s passing. When Molineux was 16 years old he decided to join the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Air Gunner from 1942 to 1945 in WWII. He began his training in Edmonton in 1942. When he graduated from training in Edmonton, he went to Saskatoon, then Regina, then Portage La Prairie, then Mont Joli, Quebec. Molineux currently resides in Clandonald.

George John Burton Betty Deschambault Submitted

George John Burton left his home in London, England and arrived in Vermilion, Alberta in 1908.

In 1913 he enlisted in the First Canadian Mounted Riffles Infantry Unit as a foot soldier. George was a Sniper and was alone when he died.

Sometime later, his body was discovered by one of his friends and his personal effects from his pockets were sent to his older brother, Arthur (my father) and his sister Daisy Burton in Vermilion.

The gentleman who found George’s body sent the letters along with a letter of kind words on how he knew George to Arthur.

George John Burton’s body was buried at Yrpes of the Menin Gale in Belgium. This is the most famous memorial site and they still hold a ceremony there every day.

The date on his headstone is June 2, 1916, which means he was 30 years old when he died.

Al Deschambault Betty Deschambault Submitted

Al Deschambault was born at Dundee, Quebec. In 1954, when he was 18 years old, he enlisted in the Air Force in Montreal. His basic training was at St. John’s, Quebec. Al chose to be a Crash Rescue and Structure Fire Fighter and instructor working with young, eager recruits for heavy equipment fire fighting at Borden, Ontario.

Then he was transferred to McDonald, Manitoba; then to Portage La Prairie where he met and married Helen and over the next few years, they had two sons.

Now, with their young family, Al was transferred to One Wing, Marville in France. In 1964, Al’s wife was admitted to a US hospital in Germany where she had their baby girl.

One Wing was closing in 1966. Al refused to move to Four Wing. Soellingen in Germany where they would have to live in a tent until the PMQ Barracks were provided so he was moved back to Canada to Moisey, Quebec.

When they arrived, they found out they had to live in a tent for a few weeks until the married quarters were completed. The children thought they were just camping.

In 1968, he was transferred to Cold Lake, Alberta. They were posted to Goosebay, Labrador and then back to Cold Lake, Alberta in 1974 where they remained until he retired in 1980.

While Al was in France their barracks were set on fire during the night at about 3 a.m. on a Saturday. The barracks were full of Friday evening party goers. Al realized he could never get so many of these men out safely as more than half of the active Fire Fighters had been moved to Lahr, Germany.

Only the Pumper Operator and Al worked to put the fire out. An excited fellow kept climbing the ladder to see what was going on and later they found out that the guy was the one who had set the fire.

Al enjoyed his 25 years in the service. He worked as an Air Force Instructor and on his days off or evenings he worked as a Carpenter, Farm Worker and also coached Minor Hockey.

Remembrance Day Message This Remembrance Day, Canadians from coast to coast to coast remember the sacrifices made through 147 years of history. We remember the families of Forces members that carry worry, pride and at times grief with them. We honour the sacrifices of our brave men and women in uniform, who put their lives on the line day after day to safeguard the best of what Canada stands for: democracy, peace, the rule of law and freedom for all. And, we remember the fallen – from South Africa, to France, to Korea, and to Afghanistan – whose service has left a permanent mark on the fabric of our country. Today, we demonstrate our remembrance, appreciation and gratitude for all these Canadians.

In this year of important milestones, we mark the centennial of the First World War. Although we were a young and growing nation, Canada emerged from the conflict as a mature, reliable ally. Whether at the Battle of the Somme, Vimy Ridge or Passchendaele, the bravery and sacrifice of our troops forged the way to victory and an identity for our country.

It was during that war that the world would come to know the true character of the Canadian people: brave defenders of freedom and democracy. Today, we remember the over 650,000 men and women who served, the over 170,000 who were wounded, and the more than 60,000 who gave their lives during the First World War. This year also marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of Canada’s involvement in the Second World War. On this occasion, we remember the over one million Canadians and Newfoundlanders who enlisted and the 45,000 who lost their lives.

Another milestone anniversary to be honoured this year is D-Day. Seventy years ago, on June 6, 1944, Canada, along with our British and American allies, stood toe to toe with the enemy on the beaches of Normandy. Canadians suffered the most casualties of any division in the British Army Group.

As the Prime Minister stated on Juno Beach this past June, “The men who landed here a lifetime ago also understood that a curse rests upon the person who, reluctant to fight for good, denies the very existence of evil. Peace has no merit if the cost is oppression.”

Fat Cat Boosts Reading Program

St. Jerome’s took time to remember those who have sacrificed their lives for the freedoms and rights of all Canadians. Students, staff, cadets, veterans and community members gathered together to show their respect for our Canadian Armed Forces past and present for the St. Jerome’s Remembrance Day Service, “Standing On the Shoulders”. Bailey Koebel and Hannah Ludlage were the MCs for the service.

Bill McIldoon piped during the March of the Colours followed by “O Canada” sang by Stephanie Brokop and Sadie Granigan. The Welcoming Prayer and Message from Parliament followed.

The Grade 5 class recited “In Flanders Fields,” Breanna Maughan recited the poem “We Shall Keep the Faith” and then a video presentation created by Grade 12 student Matthew Pulyk was watched. Mr. Sommer read “The Ode” followed by “The Last Post,” 2 Minute Silence, Lament and

Reveille. Representatives from each class placed a wreath in the front of the stage. The service ended with the Grade 4 class “God Save Our Queen” followed by the March out of the Colours.

We would like to thank all those who helped to organize the service and took part in the service. We would especially like to thank the veterans who attended and the cadets, especially the students from St. Jerome’s, Bryce Thomas, Travis Musijowski, Kayla Gannon, Chelsey Nichols and Drayson Morton, who took part in the service.

“Fat Cat ” visited St. Jerome’s on Wednesday, November 5 to present a donation of $1,001 to be used to purchase books for St. Jerome’s Elementary Reading Program. The students and staff appreciate the support the Credit Union gives St. Jerome’s and how important reading is to their organization. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of St. Jerome’s students.

The Jr. High Spartans Girls and Boys hosted the ECACS Championships the “Steve Mackenzie Cup” on Tuesday, November 4. The final games for both the boys and girls saw the St. Jerome’s Spartans battling against St. Thomas Aquinas from Provost. All teams battled hard with the St. Jerome’s Girls winning gold and the St. Thomas Aquinas Boys winning gold. Mrs. Cathy Mackenzie was on hand out the trophy to each team.

Congratulations to the Sr. Boys who won Gold at the Marwayne Tournament on November 1 and won districts against Mannville on Wednesday, November 5 to advance to Zones in Plamondon on November 14 and 15. The Sr. Girls won Bronze at the Vegreville Tournament on November 1. They played in Paradise Valley this weekend for districts and will host Zones on November 14 and 15.

Come out and cheer the girls on. The JV Girls lost out in the semi-finals in Marwayne. The Jr. High Spartans Girls teams had a very successful Spooktacular weekend. The Grade 6 team work very well as a team and had a great tournament, Grade 7 won Silver, and Grade 8 and 9 won Bronze.

Congratulations to all our students who were presented awards at our Secondary Awards Day on November 7. We appreciate all the donors and businesses that contributed towards our ceremony and helped to make this a special night for our students.

Wasn’t that a great meal put on by our Leadership 9 parents and students?

The Minecraft teams got together on Monday, October 27 and they all used some great adjectives to describe how our SMART rules look, sound, and feel?

It was a great team building experience and we even took many photos to show how well we did. Elementary are all excited about the next Minecraft activity day in the month of November.

The Science 10 class with Mr. Polishuk wrapped up their Biology unit by dissecting grass frogs. The students were working in small groups to recognize and iden-

tify many of the different body systems and organs of the frog. The students looked at different structures of the mouth and throat and then went down the body of the frog, looking at parts of the heart and circulatory system, digestive, and excretory systems. Once the very specific parts of their activity were completed, the students had time to do some exploratory work and looked at the brain and specific muscles and the eye.

Local Named Alberta Portrait Photographer Of The Year

Kim Morritt of Dragon Hare Studios located in Lakeland Mall, Vermilion, competed against 143 other entries in the provincial photography awards at West Edmonton Mall November 1.

Morritt was allowed to enter four photos and two of them won three prizes in addition to her 2014 title of Alberta Portrait Photographer of the Year.

Morritt submitted her photos in early October and the judging took place a week before the awards ceremony.

There are four marks photographers can receive: not accepted, accepted, merit, and excellence. The five judges discuss what each photo will be rated as they did for her photo that won the merit award. Only 50 per cent of the entries are accepted and, of those, about one per cent of entrants are awarded with Excellence in this competition. Morritt has had a longstanding goal to achieve this benchmark.

As Morritt and her family watched the judging process online, they were glued to

their seats when her photo of a family of firefighters with a shed burning up in the background titled “An Evening with the Burns Family” was chosen for merit and her other two were accepted, one in the child portrait category and the other in the portrait category. Only 73 entries to the competition were accepted, so Morritt, having all four of her photos accepted into the salon, was in the running for Portrait Photographer of the Year.

Morritt explained that there is a story behind her photo that was accepted into the child portrait category at the provincial competitions. Morritt’s daughter, Kalla, was being bullied at school. Although Kalla didn’t have any physical bruises from the bullying, she felt internally scarred, so Morritt decided to use the skills of a local makeup artist, Krista Niedzielski, to show audiences what bullying feels like on the inside.

“She had nightmares for three weeks after and was terrified of going back to school. It simply broke my heart that I couldn’t stop it. She was not physically hurt - but the results of the mental taunting was every bit as awful as she would look

if she had been physically beaten,” Morritt explained on her Facebook page.

One of the resulting photos has been posted on the Dragon Hare Studios Facebook page along with the other three photos Morritt entered into the competition.

Then the judges had to choose between Morritt and all the other photographers who had all four of their photos accepted into the salon.

Morrit won one award for Best In Class in the portrait category, another for Best In Class in the group portrait category and the third award, which is the most exciting achievement of all for Morritt, is her Excellence award in the portrait category for a photo titled “The Reason For Mom’s Gray Hair.” It is a photo of a 2015 graduate riding his dirt bike wearing clothes that make him look like a rainbow amongst the grey clouds in the background.

There was a lot of discussion amongst the judges about this photo because it doesn`t show a face, but they finally came to a decision and Morritt won. This was the first excellence rating Morritt had ever scored. What an achievement.

Once she won two Best In Class awards, Morritt knew it was possible for her to achieve a dream she perhaps never dared to dream. She was in the standings to win the Alberta Portrait Photographer of the Year award and she did. She is allowed to keep the gigantic trophy sponsored by Kodak for a year. The trophy looks similar to the top of a Stanley Cup with flames coming out the top and a large, square-tiered, wooden base.

Morritt already has the four photos chosen that she will be entering into the national competition.

J.R. Robson Awards Night

A large group of students received honor pins at J.R. Robson during their awards night ceremony on November 7. During the ceremony it was announced that J.R. Robson was two scholarships short of earning 50 per cent of the Alexander Rutherford Scholarships awarded in the entire school division. were allowed to take an arrow out and place the notch into the bow string and take three shots at the targets.

Throughout the year, archery club members can expect to learn how to improve their shot with fun games and lots of time to practise.

Vermilion Rock Versus Monarchs Then Hitmen Nicole Crossan Reporter

Monarchs Floundered against Vermilion rock The hockey game on November 1 was an exciting, fast-paced game with great teamwork and a lot of penalties, mostly in the second period. Vermilion Rock continued their winning streak by winning their second game of the season. The first period began with a goal by Vermilion’s #19 Dylan Yungblut that was assisted by #18 Andrew Webb for a score of 1-0 for Vermilion. The score remained the same until 11:49 into the second period when Adam Evans assisted by Kolby Kaziechko, scored the second goal while the opponent was still left with no score. Only about three minutes later, the Neilburg Monarchs’ #18 Reid Putnam, scored their one and only goal of the game. The Rock followed up with three more goals in the third period for a final score of 5-1 for Vermilion.

Women and Men’s Curling Season Premiere Nicole Crossan Reporter

The first practice for women’s curling began on November 4 with five teams but they needed an even number to play a game so they mixed it up a bit to make six teams so ever yone would have a chance to play.

They are hoping for a few more people to sign up for the Tuesday night practices to form one more team.

Getting Into Shape Twyla Quickstad spoke of how important it is to have a few practises before the bonspiels start so that curlers can get their curling muscles back into shape for the season.
