Lakeland SMF Harvest Supper Nicole Crossan Reporter

Lakeland College Crop Technology Student Managed Farms (SMF) held their annual Har vest Supper at the Lakeland College Cafeteria on October 29. Student Managed Farms are plots of land that are farmed by the students under the supervision of their advisors.

Six teams of students were invited to share the results of their work to maintain and improve the student managed farm plots; Operations, Productions, Finance, Marketing, Research, and Public Relations. In addition, students can apply to be a general student manager or an assistant general student manager.

This is par t of the Agricultural Sciences program at Lakeland College, Vermilion Campus and a percentage of the work done on the farm is included in each of the student ’s marks. In addition to working students in this program fill out a form that allows them to make three choices of which team they would like to join and each of the six teams has an advisor overseeing their activities.

The advisor of the Public Relations team pointed out that one of the most interesting parts of the SMF program is the diversity in backgrounds of the students. From a distance, one might assume that only farm children would enroll in such a program, but that is not always the case in the Lakeland College Vermilion Campus. Not only do the students have a wide variety of locations they come from to take this program, including interprovincial locations, but there are also students from both rural and urban backgrounds.

Some of the students have grandparents who farmed, but they grew up in an urban area.

To ensure all the teams are in sync with one another, they meet for a weekly general meeting where questions are answered, issues are discussed, and future plans are voted on using the democratic process of majority rules, to come to an agreement on issues as they arise.

If the students have ideas that may or may not be advisable, the advisors are there to discuss them with the students to ensure the best paths are chosen for the most profitable and productive crops possible.

A risk was taken this year in planting soy beans and fava beans in one of the SMF crops. While the soy beans found it too cold to germinate, the fava beans produced surprisingly well. Harvesting them with the combine was a bit of a challenge until the best settings on the combine were found. The students explained that harvesting soy beans is

very similar to harvesting peas.

As explained by Josie Van Lent, Dean of Agricultural Sciences, industry partners are the key people that enable the SMF to work. Partners mentioned were Webb’s Machinery/New Holland w h o g e n er o u s l y a ll owe d t h e S M F students to use their equipment for various parts of the farm production as well as Cargill, but there have also been many others due to the nature of the way the SMF is run and managed.

The Finance team creates a budget for both the farm and the team activities which gives the rest of the teams a guideline to follow as they plan to carry out their various roles. The Research team forms partnerships with companies who would like research done on certain types of seeds and chemicals. The Production team can then plan where, when, and what to plant and what chemicals to use on the crops, which allows the Operations team to manage the labour and determine where to store the har vested

products. Finally, the marketing team searches for the best time and place to sell, which requires great leadership skills to form working partnerships with industries in the marketplace.

In between all these tasks, the Public Relations team forms partnerships that will keep them in touch with people in the industry, take photos and videos of what SMF are doing to share with partners, and plan and carry out events.

It is all these partnerships that have been formed between the various SMF teams at Lakeland College and industry that led to them winning an international award for College-Industry Partnerships in Beijing. The award has not arrived yet, Van Lent announced, but it will be soon. When considering Lakeland College was competing against a world of postsecondary institutions, this award is quite an achievement for them.

Glad Tidings Hallelujah

A cloud with long sparkling eyelashes led the costume parade that began the Hallelujah Halloween party at Glad Tidings Church. She had a calm, yet comical demeanor that encouraged young children all the way up to adults to stand before the crowd and present their costumes and explain what they were dressed as. The greatest show of gratitude for the many prizes donated by various businesses and organizations in Vermilion and area was the smile on the precious children’s faces as they received their awards. The costume parade was followed by a round of activities including bowling, hockey, gingerbread houses, basketball, fishing, balloon popping with knitting needles, throwing a sponge at a wooden clown cutout, foam pool diving, golfing, sitting in an igloo, solar bean bag toss and the snowball hoop throw. With the change in the weather the last couple days, I hate to think winter is probably just around the corner. Gazing at the weather app on my phone each day is a constant reminder winter is absolutely coming. I can sit here at the newspaper of fice in my warm lit tle space and try to pretend it isn’t cold outside but the gloominess of the day, when I do look out, is just a further reminder.

It’s that time of year again when I feel like hibernating like a bear and then quickly realize I can’t. There are so many things I need to get done.

Winterize my vehicle is one of them.

I have to bring it to the garage and get all the fluids, brakes, tires, hoses and belts checked along with the heating and defrosting units to make sure it hasn’t decided to give out over the summer months. I have to think about getting winter tires or at least make

Winter Is Coming

sure the all-seasons I do have are good enough to last me throughout the winter.

I need to stock the car up with warm fuzzy blankets, some extra gloves and boots, a shovel, flashlight and flares for in case I am unfortunate enough to break down or slide off the icy roads during the winter. I may even become very prepared and stick in a few snack foods which temperature will not affect just in case I am stuck there for a number of hours.

The house needs winterizing too as the doors and windows are not the kind which keeps the wind on the outside of the house and it has a tendency to blow a cold draft around my feet and shoulders. I have read many different ar ticles on cheap ways to winterize the house and while I don’t remember everything they have said over the years, there is one that sticks out in my mind because I remember thinking to myself that it would look really weird. It was to put bubble wrap on old windows. It is supposed to keep and trap the cool air to the window but still let light in your house.

For those doors that have the light shining through on the bottom of the door, place a towel or some decorative door stopper along the bottom. It will keep that pesky cold out and help keep your hard earned dollar from going up in smoke when you turn up the furnace to help counteract the drafts.

Ever y year I plan on getting the Christmas lights on the eves of the house and every year it goes without getting done. This year I have a good neighbor who isn’t afraid of heights so maybe, just maybe, I can talk him into getting on that ladder and placing the lights on the eves. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed on that one.

As you can probably tell I am not a fan of winter. It certainly isn’t my favorite time of year and if I had the option I would be on a plane to a nice sunny, tr o p i c a l d e s t i n at i o n for t h e e nt ire winter season. However, I don’t have that choice so I am stuck here to brave the great Canadian winter like a true Canadian.

I have met some foreign workers who have moved to Vermilion which I have become friends with and if they

can hammer out our winter, it would actually be a little embarrassing if I sulked off to some tropical place. So I will stick it out and try not to complain too much like a little child.

If you are a winter lover, like some people are, there are many things in our little town and surrounding areas for people to do. Hockey games a couple times a week, curling, cross countr y and downhill skiing, snowb oar d in g, s l e d d in g, i c e fi s hin g. If you’re a real athletic person there is a huge hill by the Vermilion River opposite the Provincial Park that looks like a wonderful spot to bring the children, let them slide down and then climb back up, which for many parents would be a blessing. All that exercise is a sure way to tire the children out and bedtime will be much easier.

So I guess whether you love winter or hate it we have no choice in whether it comes or not unfortunately. We just nee d to be pre pare d for the lo ng, darker, colder days, brave it with as much dignity as we can and do everything possible to make it as safe as possible.

Knights Offer Pancake Breakfasts To Community Nicole Crossan Reporter

Knights of Columbus hold a pancake breakfast once a month, which gives organizations in town the oppor tunity to do some fundraising and gives community members the chance to meet and greet one another in a cozy, seasonally decorated atmosphere.

There are seven breakfasts that run from September to April with no breakfasts held in December. The Knights of Columbus do the cooking for each of these events, while the sponsor is responsible for providing volunteers to per form kitchen duties, clearing

tables, and collecting donations from visitors.

This is a great way for organizations to fundraise because half of the amount raised goes to the sponsor.

This amount varies from between $400 to $700. St. Jerome’s Kindergar ten class raised $500 last month at their pancake breakfast and the Vermilion Valley Lodge raised the same amount on October 26. The Knights of the Columbus rotates three new sponsors and four regular sponsors each year.

October came and went fairly quickly, although at least it wasn’t a blur like July, August and September. I don’t know if I’m ready for November, but it is here.

I had a lot of great outdoor adventures in October, saw a lot of interesting things in the wilderness, and I still have a couple days of October left as I write this.

This coming Saturday will be another adventure.

It will be November 1, the opening of 2014 rifle hunting season here in the Midwest, for which I will be helping a friend find his bull moose.

With no snow out there, it will be busy.

The last couple of years, most of the area where moose and elk hide was impassable for most vehicles other than snow machines.

Weather has cooperated and been reasonable this year, except for the last couple of days where it has been frosty, but still very good considering the last couple of years.

We are still seeing many hawks, snakes and even Robins and I am still checking my adventure logs. I saw a Robin last week on October 23, and even had a frog croaking near my tree stand.

Around The Campfire That may be a record of listening to a frog sing that late for me in Alberta. It was good to hear as last night I looked at the pond he was at and it was frozen over, likely hibernating for the winter now.

Unless we see a warm spell, which I have seen in many Novembers years ago, all of God’s sleepy creatures will be hibernating for the long sleep. There are also a few that I wish would just go to sleep.

The wife’s furry little black and white friends who think they are farm kittens have moved in for the winter. The striped skunks do not really hibernate in winter, but instead go into a dormant or semi-active state.

Usually, due to the lack of food sources, which they now have an endless supply of, we see them quite often. Over the years, we have seen quite a few litters of skunk kits, as baby skunks are called.

We have not one, not two, but three fully grown skunks that are living on our patio, which by their calm personalities are from different litters over the years. They are fat, fluffy and at times a pain in the butt.

It looks cute at feeding time where a furry circle dines on cat food. There the entire farm’s kittens with one or two kittens, then a skunk, another one or two kittens then another skunk and so on, all form a ring feeding.

I am positive the skunks truly think they are just farm kittens with a slight odor issue.

They are unique and all act and look different, even if the skunk appears to look the

same.

We can tell them all apart. Some of the stripes are wider, while others have different markings and some are just fat like the biggest one of them I believe to be a male, the other two females.

It’s funny because when the wife comes home in the evening from work in town, as soon as she pulls into the driveway, all the farm kitty’s come to greet her, along with the striped ones.

They know when its feeding time, they are a little more aggressive when it comes to “their” food and will get right in there, pushing and sometimes diving right under the kitties lifting them off their feet.

Sometimes the farm kittens, who know this trio are just a nuisance, don’t tolerate the pushy attitude so will slap a skunk on the nose. I cringe when I see that, but these three haven’t sprayed since their arrival.

One of the momma kittens had a late litter and the little ones were a little thin so the wife was bottle feeding them for a little extra nutrition. She had one washed and fed and wanted to take it back to the dog house on the patio now owned by the kittens.

But all the stinkers were right by the door where she had put out the food, and were not about to move from the chow line, so she said, “Move them so I can put this kitten back.” I looked at her!

So here I am at the door with a broom, mumbling how these were her pets not mine and wondering if this was going to be

my final demise. I thought I was smarter than to even attempt this.

At first I gently pushed them aside with the broom, and they simply just moved around and back, eventually I just petted them with the broom which they certainly didn’t seem to mind.

So I said “ahh heck” and took the kitten from the wife and just stepped over each of them, they didn’t blink an eye, later I peeked out the patio door and all three, stuffed from kitty food were lying all stretched out and were chill-axing.

This may have been an issue for most as that’s where the barbeque is and I had some prime cut elk steaks ready for supper; when I opened the door all three saw the plate and were instantly at my feet.

I said, “This is my supper. You had yours, now go away.”

They looked at me with their beady little eyes, snubbed their little button noses in the air and reluctantly turned around and walked away. As I continually checked my sizzling steaks, two had left for bed, but the biggest lay there all stretched out and I swear I could hear it snore, I guess we have an understanding.

When the smoke Clears I have to wonder if some of our bad reputations may stink more than that of the little skunks.

County Recycles Grain And Silage Bags Nicole Crossan Reporter

The County of Vermilion River has found a plastic recycling depot to ship grain and silage bags to.

The County supplies farmers with the machine for turning these bags into bales.

These little plastic bales are then loaded onto a truck and hauled to Merlin Plastics near Hussar, Alberta where they are then shredded, washed, and turned into pellets and typically used for making garbage bags and other plastic products.

Farmers are also able to recycle their baler twine and net wrap by bagging this material separately and bringing it to the Vermilion Regional Waste Transfer station.

Recycling this material is a preferred option by many farmers as the harmful effects of burning plastic can create toxic chemicals that linger in the air and soil.

Yo u ’ d t h i n k , I suppose, when you look at all the modern lines of e q u i p m e n t , t h at i t all came about with buildings full of engineers working for multi-national companies, being paid for the use of their brains and creativity to come up with the machines that have freed us from the back- breaking toil that farmers used to endure.

If you’ve ever tried to cut hay or grain with a scythe you’ll readily understand.

My Uncle Herman showed me different times how you could twist strands of crop together and use it to make a bundle so you could more readily handle the material.

A man named McCormick was watching his wife cut material with scissors and came up with the idea of making a cutter bar that’s basically the same as all our swathers, combines and haybines still use, with refinements of course.

That was a case of a man with an idea in a little blacksmith shop who was able to put it to practical use. His contraption was laughed at, but he persevered until he was able to get satisfactory results.

For years the cut material was simply raked off the platform in bunches for someone to tie by hand with twisted strands of crop. It was too slow and tedious to say the least. Eventually a backyard tinkerer came up with the idea of a mechanical knit ter and a means to get the crop in with the help of canvas conveyors and such to enlist the knotter to tie up the bundles.

Can you imagine the sight of a new fangled binder taking standing crop and making bundles? We had a neighbor that had an old threshing machine that had no feeder or blower. It just had the threshing cylinder in front of what amounted to a big fanning mill to sort the grain from the straw and chaff.

Each bundle was landed on a little platform just so and the operator had to cut the twine and feed the stuff a handful at a time into the threshing cylinder. The power was supplied by

a one cylinder engine with huge fly wheels that I made into a wood splitter later on.

There was no blower at all, the straw just tumbled out and someone had to stand in the dust and fork the stuff away by hand. Can you understand why someone who perhaps had the chore would wonder if perhaps there wasn’t a better way?

I can bet it was a backyard blacksmith with a creative mind and a flair for invention. So many things we take for granted were made in similar fashion by unsung heroes. Henr y Ford made a horseless carriage in his backyard shop and its success prompted him to develop the endless assembly line that made the automobile cheaply enough so the people who helped put them together could actually afford to buy one!

Back where all these things seemed to be starting, two brothers who made and fixed bikes, decided to put their talents to work on making a heavier than air machine fly. They were not taken seriously at all, but in just a few years their invention became a deadly

weapon of war and made travel as we know it today possible.

Look around you now that we have smar t phones and worldwide radio and telecommunications. With all these electronic gadgets, the first telephones and radios were made by men working on their own, then trying to sell the idea to people stuck in that age old rut.

You knew of Thomas Edison who m ad e t h e f ir s t p r ac t i c a l l i g ht t h at needed no open flame to work. He also made the idea of recordings that we all enjoy, well, I do anyway. You can imagine how long that took to sell people in the back country.

In my own life I created a tipi tent for ice fishing and used it for years. I even sold them a bit, but I didn’t promote it, and now there are dozens of similar tents. Back when I made it first there weren’t any. So with the help of my daughter and her geometry text book I made tipi tent that filled the need.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention.

If you see a need you can put your efforts to develop your own remedy. It has happened that way for years.

One day not long ago, I heard a radio interview about ar twork created by inmates at the For t Saskatchewan Correctional Centre and how it was going to be featured at an Edmonton Galler y. The artists inter viewed spoke about their experiences with art. They spoke humbly about having made significant discoveries about themselves dur ing the pro c es s of creating their own work. For some, art had always been part of their lives in one form or another, while others were only beginning to explore their possibilities available to them through different aspects of art.

It’s a good story. The opportunity of exploring art seems to draw out qualities that some of the inmates hadn’t had the oppor tunit y or confidence to explore in the past. One inmate mentioned that he’d always loved art but hadn’t d one any thing drawing

Redemption Through Art since childhood when a teacher had accused him of having traced a picture that he had drawn freehand.

That a gallery expressed interest in having the artwork mounted for public viewing evoked feelings of pride some of the artists hadn’t felt in a long time or, in some cases, ever. The stigma of being a bad guy, even if you’ve b r o u g h t i t u p o n yo u r s e l f t h r o u g h unsavory actions, can be difficult to endure. Your crime doesn’t represent your whole person, yet it can feel that way for someone serving time.

Shauna Prior, director of the Fort Saskatchewan institution, says creating art can be a powerful part of the rehabilitation pro cess. Having the work on display outside the walls of the prison can help inmates see themselves as people who can once again j o i n s o c i et y, s h e s a i d i n t h e C B C story. Being recognized for their art provides the inmates with an identity associated with something positive. It provides time for self-expression and reflection. Some inmates think of it as a kind of meditation.

The Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts featured the artwork in its Stoller y Galler y, calling the installation “The Artist Inside - Removing Barriers Through Art”. The installation included fifty works of art created by inmates incarcerated in institutions all across Alberta, including some young offenders.

This week while in Ed mo nto n, I looked up the address of the Nina Hagger ty Centre and sought it out, hoping that I wasn’t too late to view the installation. I’m glad to have made the effort.

As you might expect, the work was varied in subject matter, complexity, and medium. Knowing something about its origin helped in my appreciation of ever y single piece that I viewed. Possibly even more moving than the artwork on display were the biographies and ar tist statements arranged in a small binder on a shelf in the gallery. I read every page.

“Doing art has helped me heal and embrace serenity and faith even in the dark times,” reads one statement.

It seems that others’ acknowledgment and appreciation of their artistic talents may serve, at least in part, to assist in the return of some confidence, and eventually allow them to dare to hope to become known for more than only the length of their criminal records.

This is a stunning four layer cake.

It belonged to an era, when there was a special pride in home baking.

This cake looks as good as it tastes.

Hummingbird cake has its origins in Jamaica. In the 1970’s became a popular cake in the southern states through a Jamaica airline marketing campaign.

The recipe was printed in the Southern Living Magazine, and the magazine states that Hummingbird cake is their most frequently requested recipe.

When I saw a photo of this cake, and heard how popular it is, I was c ur ious and intrigued. I had to make it, and I am glad I did. The results are well worth the effort.

Hummingbird Cake 1 cup room temperature butter 1 1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 cup crushed pineapple, with the juice 2 teaspoons vanilla 2/3 cup chopped nuts, walnuts, pecans 2 cups finely chopped banana 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ginger Preheat oven to 350 degree.

Prepare 2 round 8 inch cake pans by lining the bottom and side with wax paper, cut off any additional paper that hangs over the pan edge.

Using and electric egg beater, cream together the but ter and the sugar.

Beat in the eggs. Beat in the vanilla, crushed pineapple and chopped nuts.

Stir in the chopped banana.

In a separate bowl c ombine the flour, spices, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Mix the flour mixture well and pour it into the butter mixture and then mix it in until just well blended.

Do not over mix.

Po u r c a ke b a t t e r i n t o yo u r t w o prepared cake pans.

Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes or until a toothpick inser ted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cake to completely cool before icing with cream cheese icing.

If you use 9 inch round baking pans the cooking time may be shorter.

The slope should move water at least 8’ from the sides of the home. Secondly you need to control the water coming off the roof. I can’t tell you the number of homes I inspect that have poor eaves troughs and downspouts. 2” of rain is one thing but when you gather up that two inches and direct it all next to your foundation wall you are putting your home in jeopardy. Trust me there is not a foundation in the world that is designed to withstand this quantity of water. If you have got away with this so far lucky you but I advise you to extend the downspouts out 8’ and farther if necessary to make sure the water does not pool up next to the house.

Vermilion Folk Club Welcomes Kerr And Nash

Martin Kerr and Megan Nash will be showing at the next Vermilion Folk Club performance on November 15.

Kerr has been touted as a perfect blend of Jack Johnson and Cat Stevens with a little of the extraordinary mixed in to top it all off. Kerr’s “lyrics are original, profound, and instantly memorable. With his red hair and crystal clear voice, he reminds many of John Denver too,” www.martinkerrmusic.com stated.

Although Kerr has traveled to over 30 countries, taught music in Beijing, and his children’s albums are used in Chinese classrooms, people in our area may remember seeing Martin on stage during his 2008 Canadian idol performances on television. Our local

audience members are warned to be prepared to laugh at the road stories Martin shares between performances and to be wowed by the universal hopes and ideals woven into his songs.

Nash is another singer songwriter who will grace the stage in Vermilion on November 15. She has been performing in various locations during her 2014 Northern Fall Tour. Her October locations included: Palmer, SK; Calgary, Red Deer, Lloydminster, Edmonton, Fort Simpson, NWT, Hay River, and Yellowknife. “The Summer of 2014 was the most creative I have ever been in my life. Local Producers/ Students Learn About “Feeding The Soil”

North Dakota rancher Gabe Brown, gave a presentation on October 29 at the Vermilion Regional Centre to local ranchers, grain farmers and Lakeland College students on the benefits of tie grazing as well as sowing two crops together to help reduce soil erosion, manage weeds and help control soil moisture. Brown has been using this method for many years on his familyrun ranch. He said that by sowing the cereal crop along with a cover crop, after harvesting the cereal crop, the producer can then use the cover crop to graze livestock and also help stop the various types of erosion. This process also helps provide invaluable nutrients for the soil by leaving the crop residues for composting.

The presentation was made possible by the collaborated support of the Battle River Research group, County of Vermilion River, County of Minburn and the Agricultural Research and Extension Council of Alberta.

Having spent the last eight years as a freelance keyboard player and backup vocalist in the Canadian Country Industry, Amber Bauer has had the chance to tour with names such as Small Town Pistols (formerly known as the Wilkinsons), Tenille and Victoria Banks. Her backup career has presented the necessary connections to nourish and develop her own solo career simultaneously.

As an artist, she has opened for Emerson Drive, been featured on stage with George Canyon and sang backup vocals at the Canadian Country Music Awards this past September for many famous country artists including Gord Bamford, Jason Blaine and Chad Brownlee.

In June of 2013, Amber Bauer flew to Nashville to begin recording her first full length self-titled album at Beaird Music Group. With the help of Rick Mizzoni, Amber’s producer and mentor, her parents Bonnie and Stan Bauer, and dear friend Theresa Kushnerik, her dream to record her heart and mind through song

Local author and Dewberry school teacher Susanna Pa n k i w, p a i d a v i s i t t o the students of Vermilion Elementary School on October 28, to promote her book which she says teaches children to realize the importance of considering their own opinions on things in life. Inspired by the 1934 Dale Winbrow “The Man In The Glass,” Pankiw said she wanted to find a way to teach her own three children about being happy with their own choices and opinions and not worry about what others thought. Thus she began to write her rhyming-book “What’s My Color.” After a number of years writing and then selfpublishing the children’s book, the book is now available through her website as well as through the Friesen Press publishing company. 5 0 Ye a r s O f Vo l u n t e e r Firefighting Fire Department members ex pres sed gratitud e for new hall, pumper and tanker crew cab. When Terry first began as a volunteer firefighter in Clandonald twelve years ago, they only had a little shack. In 2005, enough funds were raised and donated to build and new hall and since then they received funds from the County to purchase a new pumper truck and fundraised and received donations for the new tanker truck. Thanks went out to volunteers, CNRL and Interpipelines. The Clandonald Fire Department has maintained a turnout of ten volunteer firefighters at every call and the membership is continuing to grow and change as the older members retire and new ones are trained. Overall, Terry explained, there has been a good response from the Clandonald community to getting trained and volunteering on the fire department.

“Clothes make a statement. Costumes tell a story”–Mason Cooley Stories swirled through the school like a torrent this Halloween week. From witches and goblins to volleyball uniforms, the students scared up a scream of successes!

Senior boys’ volleyball team flew off to Lloydminster Composite, and demonstrated some wicked moves. Through hard work and lots of skill they landed the first place finish at the tournament. Frighteningly fantastic work, boys.

Junior boys and girls both played some

otherworldly volleyball during the playdowns on October 29. Although they did not progress to the finals, the players displayed spine-chilling sportsmanship qualities as they played their ghoulish hearts out. The Spooktacular tournament held at J.R. Robson in Vermilion marked the conclusion of the volleyball season for the junior high teams. We know that all these deadly efforts you’ve become talented with will serve you well for next year’s season.

There was no hocus pocus during our monthly citizenship recognition, held on October 31.

The smile on the students’ faces were priceless when they found that their good

deeds and hard word had not gone unnoticed. They glowed like jack ‘o’ lanterns when they snatched up awards for perfect attendance, leadership, perseverance, organization, volunteerism, empathy and sportsmanship. It is so incredible to see that we have such a caring student body!

Do you think only frightening beasts come out a night? Not in Dewberry School!

Oh, no! By noon on Friday our school was infested with ghastly, eerie, and down-right weird creatures as they stalked the halls and paraded around the gym. Expecting candy handouts. Huh. Now, one would only shudder to think you’d give a treat to a

scary goblin or masked person! But here at Dewberry School, we invite you in and even take your picture. Heck, we even summon you to a sock hop and share our treats and a movie with you! Maybe that’s why the staff are such nerds?

Make Your Own Scarecrow

Ghosts, Superheroes, Jailbirds, and Spooky characters were abundant in the hallways of St. Jerome’s on Halloween Day. Each division had a variety of activities going out throughout the day from class parties, bowling, movies, games and eating lots of candy. At noon there was a large turn out of High School students for the “Make Your Own Scarecrow” activity. All participants received a treat and had a lot of fun.

The Middle Level Council organized an afternoon of fun. They planed six activities that the students rotated for and then shared snacks provided by some of the classes. The three Costume Winners for the middle level were Alexis Davies, Seth Mansfield, and Jessie Bibeau.

Mrs. Roth’s Grade 3 class entertained students and guests at October Happigrams with their version of “Monster Mash”, the poem “It’s Halloween” and the Christian song “Every Move”. The students looked fabulous in their costumes and the decorations were very spooky. Congratulations to all the October Happigram winners for the hard work, and terrific attitude they have showed throughout the month of October.

Congratulations to the Jr. High Girls and Boys Volleyball teams as they both were crowned Highway “16” Champions this past week. On October 29 the girls participated in the tournament at J. R. Robson, while the boys travelled to Kitscoty. The Jr. Girls teams participated in “Spooktacular” at J.R. Robson last weekend and St. Jerome’s is hosting the “Steve Mackenzie Cup” on November 4.

The winners for our “Just Say Hi “campaign, which was held by VIBE at the beginning of October were, Colt Sweeney, Chloe Turner, Reagen Squires, Nicholas Karwandy, Caitlin Nichols, Austin Laurence, Hayden Maida, Rebecca Evans, Jessica Kingston, Kalista McIntyre. Each winner won a gift card from businesses around Vermilion.

Cain Collins recognized October’s Spartan of note is Grade 11 student Cain Collins. Cain exemplifies what it means to be a student at St. Jerome’s. Not only is he successful academically, but he is also very involved as a member of the senior high boys’ volleyball team and as an executive member of the Senior High Student Council.

In September Cain played a very important role in helping organize our Welcome Back to School activity, and was a key member of the St. Jerome’s house induction and welcome to new students day.

Chefs Roast Pumpkin Seeds Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted At our October 22 AR assembly, Fat Cat presented a cheque to VES for $3,718.

We appreciate the Vermilion Credit Union for their generous donation and for, once again, sponsoring our AR (Accelerated Reading) program.

Mrs. MacMillan would like to express her appreciation to all the volunteers who helped make the Scholastic Book Fair so successful: Judy Smith, Darby Cusack, Danielle Erickson, Terra Schultz, Deanna Zubiak, Lynnal Miller, Debra DeRoo, Kathy Nelson, Brandy Hopkins, Sherri Tovell, Linda Hemauer, Amy Everest, Mrs. Doherty, Mr. Faull, and Miss Kjenner. Without these people, this fabulous fund raiser would not

have been as successful. The commission VES received, goes toward new books, hosting author visits, and an author writing residency for an entire week. The winner of our family event draw was Paige Meissner, who received $25 in books for herself and $25 in books for her 4B classroom.

On October 22, Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Doherty interviewed for our new Educational Assistant position. We are excited to welcome Mrs. Ruth Prill to our staff. She started her part time position on October 28.

The 1A class had many pumpkins generously donated by family members. The children used these pumpkins to learn in language, math and science by sorting them, weighing them, ordering them by size and measuring them. Two fabulous 1A moms come and helped them practice their counting. The students had the chance to

dive into the pumpkins, hands first, making predictions about how many seeds each pumpkin contained and then placing the seeds into groups of 10. They also got to put their chef hats on and roast the pumpkin seeds.

On October 28, the Grade 4 students went on a field trip to learn about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle in Vermilion.

They really appreciated having the Vermilion Recycling Center show them the items that can be recycled and they realized how helpful it would be if everyone would sort their materials in the proper bins. Students learned how to shred plastic and bail cardboard. The students would also like to thank the Waste Transfer Station who toured them around as well. Usually a semi-truck full of garbage leaves Vermilion daily to be put in the Riley landfill. They learned about the important work the station does

to help recycle computers, oil, tires, metal, and paint. As the bus drove them through town, the students were shown the Bottle Depot and Community Closet in their travels. Keep recycling, Vermilion!

At the end of the day on October 31, we had our annual Halloween parade in the gym. It was awesome to see so many students and staff participating. The costumes were many and varied, and everyone was having such fun.

The Vermilion Food Bank recently received a large donation from the students of VES in conjunction with the annual Drive Away Hunger campaign through Farm Credit Canada. Students were given a paper bag and asked to fill it with food and return it to the school. Appreciative food bank volunteers then had to begin the sorting process. Kade Cusack, Grade 4 (right) Kade is a nine year old student at Vermilion Elementary School. He is the oldest of four children in his family. His passions are hockey and cars, especially old cars. In his free time, Kade enjoys playing in the sandbox and riding quads. Kade demonstrates good citizenship and respect at school in many ways. First thing in the morning he comes in very cheerful and always says a pleasant good morning. He always has a nice word for people and is always the first one to come and help without being asked. He is very focused and provides a calming affect for those around him. When instructions are given, he responds quickly and does what is requested. Halloween festivities that took place last Friday were planned and executed by members of Captain Kidd. Logan Stepanick, Kale Wilhelm, Nathaniel Ashlin-Mayo, Taylor Regier, Amber Wagner, Beaud on Rog er s, Ashley Wagner, Cameron Webb, and Evan Howard partook in the setup of multiple events that were held throughout the school including gymnasium floor hockey and dodgeball, bobbing for donut holes, caramel apple decorating, and pumpkin decorating. Freaky, funny, and fascinating creatures and characters haunted the school throughout the day. Brenden Lupul, Anastasia McCullough, Connor Lychak, Julia McCrae, and Hannah Stewar t won prizes for having the best individual costumes. Super Trooper members— Koti Hopaluk, Fraser Lumley, Devon Eyben, Colton Katuski, Shjon Moneta, Kyle Whitlock, and Josh Eyben—won for best group costume.

Animals Helping Animals Project Susan Obrigewitch, Mannville School

“Take Our Kids To Work” initiative. This day allows students to understand the importance of doing well in school by seeing first-hand the skills required in today’s workforce. It also allows them to explore career options in a practical way.

Mrs. DeFord’s Grade one will soon start their Flat Stanley project in social.

They are sending Flat Stanleys to three other communities around the world.

The Grade two class with Mrs. Miller spent a morning building their Halloween themed magnetic toys. They then invited other classes in the school to check out their toys and to play with them too.

Mrs. Campbell’s Grade three class held a “Animals Helping Animals” fundraiser. They collected gently used stuffed animals and then sold them for $1 or $2.

The students raised $140 which will go towards adopting animals from the World Wildlife Fund. The students have been learning about being global citizens and taking responsibility for the wellbeing of our planet and for other citizens around the world.

Mannville School had a bottle drive on Thursday, October 16. The drive was a great success due to the fact that we had a fantastic student, parent and staff turn-out and the fact that our community members were very generous and supported our school! We raised a total of $1,132.60 in bottles and monetary donations.This fundraising event assists the school with some of the expenses we encounter with our clubs and our athletic teams.

We would like to thank all the students who came out to help plus all the parents and teaching staff that brought their trucks! Once again, we appreciate Mr. and Mrs. Thompson at the Mannville Bottle Depot for staying open late and assisting us with the drive and the community for all your support.

Next week our Grade nine students have the opportunity to participate in the

Mrs. Amero’s Grade four class was fortunate enough to be able to participate in a distance learning program with the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller. Students had a quick course in Geography, Archeology and Paleontology.

The Grade five class with Miss Cusack is starting another exciting unit in science, Magnetism and Electricity. They will need some building supplies for the next two units, so if you have shoeboxes, toilet paper rolls, extra tin foil, D-cell batteries or any other materials we could build with and you would like to donate it would be greatly appreciated.

There is never a dull moment in the Grade six classroom as they learn about the Chills and Thrills of comprehension.

They have become very good writers as they share their journal writing with their parents each week. I am sure that some of the parents might even be complaining about their own homework because they have to write back to their children! Mrs. Roland says that all of the parents have

done a great job! It has been a very good experience.

Accelerated Reading....Dr. Seuss is on the Loose. The elementary students are excited to find out how many quizzes that they have taken for the month of October.

They find out on November 5, and they also get to meet Fat Cat and Mr. Myhovich once again. The challenge is 3,333 quizzes for this year.

A special thank you goes out to our Grade ten class who planned the Halloween Carnival and Haunted House! The elementary students looked great sporting their new glow bracelets. The healthy cupcakes were yummy, and we appreciated the Halloween bottles of water!

Vermilion Citizens On Patrol Dixie Farkash Submitted

Vermilion Citizens On Patrol Society (COPS) Sixth Annual General Meeting was held on October 21. This potluck supper and social evening was an appreciation to our friends and supporters.

Vermilion COPS began in 2008 as a group of concerned citizens and it has

now grown into a family. Even more importantly, we have become a family that feels the suppor t of the whole community.

The COPS program continues to expand across the Province and Canada.

A national association was formed in 2013. This group has been asked by the RCMP to be involved in the community policing aspect of RCMP training.

AMA has become a provincial sponsor of Alberta COPS Association and is involving COPS groups in safety programs such as household document shredding events and distracted driving education.

Vermilion COPS continues to help other communities to organize groups to provide support to their local RCMP. There are many people who support

us. We wish to thank all the businesses who buy our window signs, Town Council, Rural Crime Watch, Alberta Transportation, Carillion, FOCUS, Vermilion Fire Dept., Prairie EMS, Victims Services, and Vermilion VIBE. difference in communities around the globe.

Canadians have been proud to work with partners, such as Rotary, to eradicate polio. Since 2006, Canada has disbursed $297 million to support polio eradication efforts, namely through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). Canada’s support to the GPEI has contributed to the immunization of millions of children around the globe. We will continue to work with our partners to help put an end to this devastating childhood disease which can

be prevented with a simple vaccine.

Letter To The Editor Honouring our Living and Fallen Veterans This year has been a time of great remembrance for Canadians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom around the world. As a tribute to all those who served in Canada’s Afghanistan mission, our Government established May 9 to be a National Day of Honor. The Afghanistan mission was 12 years in length and deployed over 40,000 Canadian personnel to the area.

While Afghanistan is now much more secure and stable thanks to the help of our Canadian troops, 158 Canadian Armed Forces personal, one diplomat, and numerous civilian lives were tragically lost. The Afghanistan mission was the largest deployment of Canadian Armed Forces personnel since the Second World War. In June, Prime Minister Harper, Canadian delegates, and Veterans of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy travelled to historic Juno Beach to help commemorate the seventieth anniversary of D-day.

Veterans were given travel assistance to take part in this historic event.

August 4, 2014 marked the hundredth Anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and the start of Canada’s First and Second World Wars Commemoration period. In Ottawa, our Government honored this milestone by holding a ceremonial event at the iconic National War Memorial. The event included the National Sentry Program, complete with a General Salute and a Fly Past. Prime Minister Harper also participated in a ceremony held at the Canadian War Museum to pay tribute to this important day.

Providing for our Veterans Our Government is committed to providing optimal support for our Veterans, during and after their call of duty.

In 2013, our Government announced that Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Veterans who were released from their service due to a duty-related injury or illness will receive primary consideration for job opportunities in the public service. The recently introduced Veterans Hiring Act will build on this initiative by expanding this privilege to all CAF Veterans who ser ved a minimum of three years, and will apply for a period of five years upon their release date. Additionally, our Government will continue to work with private sector companies and industry leaders through the Hire a Veteran Program and the Helmets to Hardhats Program. My colleagues and I look forward to debating and passing the Veterans Hiring Act in the fall.

Under Economic Action Plan 2014, $2.1 million is being proposed to improve the administration of veteran services by providing enhanced webbased tools that will give Veterans and their families better access to essential services and the Veterans Affairs Canada Department on a 24/7 basis, anywhere in the world.

Overall, our Government has increased investments in Veterans benefits by nearly $5 billion in new funding since coming to office. This new funding has been used for numerous initiatives, some including: · Improving access to monthly benefits for seriously-injured Veterans in the Enhanced New Veterans Charter Act; · Providing access to accommodation, transportation to medical appointments, financial support for caregivers, and educational opportunities for spouses of severely injured Veterans under the Legacy of Care program; · Supporting Veterans with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) by providing disability benefits, treatments and home care support; · Introducing and extending the dead-

line for the Agent Orange ex-gratia payments for Veterans who were in contact with the testing of this unregistered United States military herbicide during the Summers of 1966 and 1967; · Announcing the Atomic Veterans Recognition program to provide onetime ex-gratia payments of $24,000 to Veterans who participated in nuclear weapons testing following the Second World War, and in the Chalk River nuclear decontamination at key points in the 1950s; and · Doubling the maximum amount a Veteran’s family is eligible for under the Funeral and Burial Program from $3,600 to $7,363. This is in addition to an average of more than $1,200 for the cost of a burial.

That is why, under our Canada First Defence Strategy, we have, and will continue to invest in defence procurements in order to meet this objective. We have also announced to invest over $1 billion in infrastructure

Our Government has also made great strides in supporting our military personnel who suffer from deployment-related mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, the Canadian Forces have over 378 full-time mental health professionals and are working to hire more. In fact, when compared to our NATO allies, the Canadian Forces has the highest ratio of mental health care workers to soldiers.

As Remembrance Day – and the recent events in Saint-Jean-sur-Richeli eu an d O t t awa – h a s s h ow n u s, Canadians never take for granted the immense sacrifice and dedication of our brave men and women in uniform. Our Government is committed to supporting our armed forces now and well into the future.

Lakeland SMF International Award

Josie Van Lent, Dean of Agricultural Sciences at Lakeland College Submitted

Lakeland College’s commitment to involving industry in the Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland has earned the college an international award.

Lakeland received a silver Award of Excellence in the college-industry partnership category from the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP).

The awards were announced Friday during the WFCP’s world congress in Beijing. The college was among 11 post-secondary institutions recognized for initiatives that strengthen applied learning and research outcomes.

“Our flagship Student Managed Farm (SMF) is a model of a college-industry partnership that both improves student access to meaningful work upon graduation and meets the skill needs of the 21st century

worker,” says Josie Van Lent, dean of agricultural sciences at Lakeland College.

The SMF provides Lakeland’s agricultural sciences students with the real-world experience of operating and managing a multi-million dollar agriculture business.

Introduced in 1990 with the crop technology program, the concept was expanded to the animal science technology program in 2009. Today the SMF features crop, beef (commercial and purebred cattle), sheep and dairy units. Thanks to a partnership with New Holland’s North American office, students have access to the latest line of New Holland farm machinery to use on the SMF. In recent years more focus has been placed on applied research, says Van Lent.

“Students have an opportunity to work with many crop input companies in conducting trials on college plots and we’re also involved in livestock feed intake trials at the Vermilion campus.” Last year approximately 90 Lakeland students participated in research projects through class work

and/or involvement with the SMF crop unit research team.

On a global scale, Lakeland has collaborated with partners on international projects in Tanzania and Belize. Lakeland’s role was to help develop agricultural programs and curriculum which included hands-on learning opportunities similar to the SMF. Lakeland also participated in a federal international trade mission to Russia and Kazakhstan to explore and support agriculture educational partnerships.

“We’re honoured to receive this award from the WFCP. Through work with industry and government partners plus participation in industry conferences and meetings, our students are actively engaged in a learning process that helps them gain the experience and skills that make them employer ready,” says Van Lent.

Lakeland College has campuses in Vermilion, Alberta and Lloydminster, Alta/ Sask and serves more than 7,500 students each year.

The 36th Annual Fall Show and Sale was called The Lloydminster Zoetis Stockade Round Up and was held October 30 to November 1.

For 35 years Stockade Round Up has seen the best cattle and the top breeders from throughout the Prairies.

This year was another great show.

Everyone was excited to get onto the show circuit. The fall show circuit kicks off with Stockade Round Up, then exhibi-

tors head to the other major shows in Edmonton (Farm Fair), and Regina (Agribition).

Due to increased purebred cattle numbers we kicked off Stockade Roundup with our UFA Feature Show Series Stockade Lady Show on October 29. It is a high calibre heifer jackpot show. Competitors from each breed participated.

The first day of Stockade Roundup on October 30, saw great crowds and exciting action with the Stock Dog Trials and the first half of the Purebred Cattle Shows taking place. The final round of Purebred Cattle shows included the Saskatchewan Black and Red Angus Gold Shows, as well as the UFA Feature Show Series King of the Ring jackpot show. The Grand Champions returned Friday night to compete in the Coca Cola Supreme Show where the best animal of the show would be crowned. The commercial cattle show and sale and Cattleman of the Year Award ceremony

were also held. The Cattleman of the Year award was presented to Dave and Sheila Crittall of Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan.

The Difference Between Equity And Equality

The workshop began by demonstrating how many assumptions people make based on visual perceptions (appearances) and how false most of those assumptions can be. Out of a list of three questions: what kinds of foods a person eats, what a person’s ancestry is, and how long a person’s family has lived in Canada, participants who did not know one another beforehand were fortunate if they were able to get even one correct.

One of the many scenarios that was discussed during the workshop was the reaction of a man who was feeling rushed while he stood in line at the grocery store.

Rather than offering to assist the gentleman ahead of him who was visually impaired, the rushed man yelled unkind words at the visually impaired person.

The presentation showed how this scenario may happen in many locations within our community and in communities throughout the province, nation, and, perhaps, world, which suggests that it is not unusual in our times for people to be in a rush and forget the feelings of those they may be trying to rush in return.

Other ways to deal with this and several other scenarios in an appropriate and respectful manner were discussed throughout the workshop.

At first glance, it is difficult to discern the difference between the words equity

and equality. Equality, Zehr pointed out, is a word that has been used for various movements over the past few decades.

The trend is now changing as leaders have come to recognize that equity is a more viable term due to its significant connotations of inclusiveness and respect for all.

Zehr said that the best explanation of the difference between the two terms was shown with a picture of two cartoons featured side-by-side.

The one on the left showed the meaning of equality. In it was pictured three children who were all different ages and sizes, yet each of them were given equal size boxes to stand on in an effort to help them to reach their goals of seeing over the fence to watch a baseball game. Only one of the three could comfortably see over the fence in this scene because, although the boxes were all the same size, the children weren’t.

The picture on the right featured the same three children getting three different sized boxes, each according to his needs, and all three were now at the same height and all three could see over the fence.

This second picture showed equity.

These pictures described the difference between equity and equality better than any words could, Zehr finished.

After learning part of this program in Grand Prairie, Tymmarah Zehr, instructor of the Safe Harbour Workshop in Vermilion on October 28, decided that this workshop should be shared with more communities, especially in her home province, Alberta. Zehr has a Master’s degree in International and Intercultural Communication and currently resides in Edmonton.

Her biography reads, “Zehr’s interest in welcoming communities comes from a desire to bring people together towards global peace by increasing cultural sensitivity and reducing discrimination.”

People who were opposed to certain lifestyles were reminded that showing respect for peoples differences is not the same as showing agreement with them.

It is possible for people to be respectful of people of various cultures and ethnicities, abilities, sexual orientations, faith and religions, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, appearances, and family types without compromising their own beliefs and values.

One example of this was given in a video during the workshop that showed a man speaking in Tagalog (a language common in the Philippines) on his cell phone while he was grocery shopping.

A couple walked by and spoke to each other about him in English. One of the inconsiderate things the other shoppers said was, “He could be planning to rob the place.” Little did they know that the man was fluent in both Tagalog and English

and understood what they were saying.

The video was stopped then and the workshop group was asked how they would feel if they were the person speaking Tagalog in this situation. After people responded to this and a couple other questions, the rest of the video was shown, which gave an example of how a Safe Harbour certified location might deal with such a situation.

The cashier left his post and approached the man to ask him, in English, what language he had been speaking on the phone. Then the cashier mentioned how many languages they know how to say hello in at their store and offered to add Tagalog to the list of languages employees at the store had learned how to say hello in. The video closed with a picture of the cashier hanging the list on the front door with one more language added to it.

Marauders Deny Lions’ Shutout Goal Cathy Wolters Reporter

Bookmakers probably wouldn’t gone any higher than a 500-to-1 shot for the Marauders to defeat the St. Paul Lions in Wheatland playoff action last Saturday.

And if you bet on that long shot, you would have lost. You would have collected if you bet that the Marauders wouldn’t be shut out.

The Marauders didn’t help themselves with a lethargic first half displaying the intensity of cold noodles used as fake brains in Halloween haunted houses. However, the dozen points they eventually did score prevented the Lions from reaching their goal of shutting out their opposition in the Jungle (their playing field).

The offense, that had been hitting on all cylinders the previous week, lurched through the first 24 minutes giving up three interceptions in the first quarter and three fumbles in the second. This assisted the Lions to a 43-0 halftime lead.

Following a team-only discussion that started the Marauder halftime, the defence revved up their game and held St. Paul to a field goal in the third quarter. But the offense continued to splutter giving up a two more fumbles.

Late in the third quarter the Marauders found themselves first and goal following a 67-yard pass and run by Donovan Yaceyko, who broke several tackles to take the ball to the Lion 10, The last play of the quarter was an incompletion as was the first of the final quarter when Brandon Maida got behind coverage in the end zone but wasn’t able to get a handle on the ball.

St. Paul then marched the ball to the Marauder 23, but the defence held fast blocking the St. Paul punt and taking over on downs on their own 30. Tyson Palshuka was thrown for a loss of five before a pass interference call brought the ball up to the

Marauder 43.

With the St. Paul bench calling out to watch for “33” [Yaceyko], that “31 is on the field” [Brayden Chilibeck] and that a “reverse” could be coming, Colton Katuski lofted the ball deep and Yaceyko used his basketball and high jump skills to leap for the reception and hurtled downfield to break the Lion’s shutout. His convert was low, so Vermilion trailed by 40 with 6:53 left in the game.

On the other hand, Yaceyko’s kickoff spiraled high giving Chilibeck plenty of time to grab the ball while a group of Lions watched him. The next play saw the Marauders fake the reverse and Chilibeck plowed ahead for 24 yards to the Lion 6.

Yaceyko leapt for another jump ball and the second Marauder score 1:08 after the first touchdown.

Looking to add a two-point convert, the Marauders faked the kick. However, Katuski’s pass went through the hands of a wideopen Chilibeck who was the only player in the end zone.

This time the Lions were ready for a short kick and took possession on their 51.

Following a time count violation and a sack

by William Snider , assisted by Tyler Bilusack, the Lions turned a 2nd and 20 into a converted TD and their 53 point total The Marauders continued to battle looking for long gains in the air. St. Paul, although leading by 39 points, continued to blitz Katuski who did manage to connect with Chilibeck for a 36-yard reception at the three minute warning. But, the next Hail Mary was intercepted.

The Marauder defence did force St. Paul to punt. The Lions were called for no yards and a 15-yard penalty when Bradley Druble, who wasn’t onside like Madison Brousseau, fell on the ball on the Marauder 7. Katuski connected with Maida for a 43-yard gain with less than 30 seconds on the clock.

However Katuski was sacked on the next play and the Marauders were also called for unnecessary roughness with 13.1 seconds on the clock.

Points after: After the post-game meal during the traditional coaches’ comments, the Lion’s coach stated their team goal was to shutout the Marauders. This might explain a short kick off attempt when the Lions already lead 14-0 with 5:50 left in the first quarter. The Lions did take out their starting offense to start the second half…

Katuski, playing in his last game, was .500 on completions going 11 for 22 and 210 yards. Both he and Bilusack were on the field for much of the last quarter. Although a Marauder rookie, Bilusack is in grade 12. Both were also recognized before the game along with the St. Paul seniors…

Chilibeck recovered two fumbles and had an interception nullified by a pass interference call…Yaceyko had one punt blocked after the snap went over his head, but two other puns both travelled over 50 yards…

Palshulka had the most rushing touches…

The captain’s star pick went to rookie Vincent Brousseau who got a chance to play in the second half and contributed a couple of big tackles…Carter Usenik had the hit of the game on the Lion’s quarter-

back Patrick Dion. On the next play the Lion’s targeted him. He limped through the rest of the game and was played sparingly in the second half for his own protection.

Tigers Sink Their Claws In Vermilion Tigers had a difficult time getting past the Vegreville Rangers’ powerful defense and goalie and were feeling little discouraged at the beginning second period when the score was 2-0 and the Rangers got yet another goal. The Tigers began to climb back into the game as they improved their defense and refused to give the Rangers passage to their goal for the rest of the game. Final score 5-2 for the Rangers on October 31, but it was an intense game, as usual. Photos Nicole Crossan.

DETAIL BAY Vermilion Rocks Two Hills Longhorns In the Vermilion Rock game against Two Hills Longhorns on October 24, the first period ended with three goals for the Rock and one for the Longhorns. The Longhorns still had only one goal after the second period, while the Rock got two more goals. This was followed by an amazing eight goals in the third period: five for Vermilion Rock and three for Two Hills.

The final score 10-4 for Vermilion.
