People were welcomed to Lakeland College with a warm smile as they came to tour the College, attend the career fair, and talk to the people at the various booths around the Lakeland College Vermilion campus on October 24 and 25.

“We all had a very busy first day of Open House on Friday here in Vermilion, because it was also the Career Fair, plus there was a platoon graduation at E TC,” says Sarah Jayne Stoop, enrolment supervisor at Lake-

RCMP Reports

Vermilion rCmP attend Fatal Collision On October 19 at approximately 5:30pm Vermilion RCMP, Fire, EMS and STARS were called to a single vehicle collision on Highway 631 at Range Road 114.

A 61 year old male driver had been operating the vehicle when he lost control and the vehicle rolled. One passenger, a 47 year old female succumb to her injuries on scene and she was pronounced deceased. The five other occupants were all children and one of them who is eight years old was transported to an Edmonton area hospital by STARS in

serious condition.

Police continue to investigate the collision and have utilized the services of an RCMP Collision Re-constructionist. The section of highway was re-opened at approximately 11:30pm.

It is unknown at this time if any charges will be laid and any other contributing factors. Police are not releasing the names of any occupants until families have been notified.

Hit and run-Power Pole On October 18th, 2014, Two Hills RCMP received a call reporting a hit and run to a power pole. During the early afternoon hours a large truck was turning from 50th (Ed Stelmach) Avenue in Andrew, Alberta onto Highway 855.

The truck did not make a wide enough turn and took down a power pole causing a power outage in the community and considerable expense to make the repairs.

With Halloween being this week we will watch the excitement of the day grow as children and adults prepare for the time we all get to act like children and dress up in scary or sometimes funny costumes, attend par ties and gatherings, visit haunted houses, watch scary movies and of course the joy and laughter of little children running from house to house trick-or-treating.

The origins of Halloween can be widely debated as some believe it originates partly from Christianity “All Saints Day” a day of feast. As stated on http:// www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca . The word Halloween has Christian origins: in medieval Britain, All Hallows’ Eve, from which we derive our “Halloween,” was the evening before All Saints Day (or All Hallows). Yet the customs of Halloween may derive more from an ancient, pre- Christian, Celtic festival of Samhain, which some argue was adapted by early Christians to convert the Celtic people.

It was observed yearly in Britain and Ireland on November 1, marking the end of the harvest and beginning of winter.

People wore costumes and masks to ward off harmful spirits. The bones of slaughtered animals were cast into fires to aid the dead on their journey, hence the term “bone fire” which now a days we call “bonfire.”

Halloween traditions were brought to Canada by means of Scottish and Irish immigrants. One of the customs brought with them was the Jack-O -Lantern.

Originally the Jack-O-Lantern was a carved out turnip holding a candle. The same as with much of Halloween origins there is debate amongst how the Jack –O-Lantern came to be. Some believe that the carved turnips were used as lanterns on Samhain, while others claim it came from an adaptation of the old Christian custom of commemorating souls in purgatory by lighting candles in turnips. Also there is some debate about the Jack-O-Lantern being derived from a story of a man who was refused entry into either heaven or hell because he was a miser and he played tricks on the devil. The man Jack was condemned to

walk the earth with a lantern until Judgement Day. Halloween this year falls on a Friday a night where us adults often enjoy going out on a regular week, but this week its special it’s our time to have fun with friends, dress up and go out, with that being said it is my wish that us as adults remember that drinking and driving at any time is wrong but Halloween night we have to be particularly vigilant in our behaviour and make sure we do not cause any harm or tragedy to another family with our own stupidity. Make sure when we go out to celebrate to have arrangements made on how we are going to get home. Leave your vehicle at the bar and cab it!

As for our children it is our responsibility to make sure they are kept safe.

As a community we will have to be more aware of our surroundings while we drive through the streets, children often get so excited they forget the rules of the road and will pop out in front of an oncoming car without even thinking of the consequences. Dark colored costumes will make the children much harder to see, put a reflective stripe on

your childrens costume so they are more visible to vehicles.

We also have to remember that even though we live in our safe little community it is still very important to check all treats our children receive before they eat anything.

We need to monitor all activities our children are involved in because let’s face it when they get out with friends a night of fun can quickly turn into a night of destruction. Cars, houses and buildings can and will be pranked or vandalized.

Teach our children to respect the property of other community members, instruct them on the consequence of their actions if they feel the need to succumb to peer pressure.

Keep all pets inside, children running into a driveway or yard unannounced to a dog can cause the animal to react instinctively which could result in a child being bitten.

Let’s keep this Halloween a safe and happy day for everyone involved, caution, perseverance and smarts will do it.

I thank ever yone who c alle d and emaile d expressing concern about my welfare.

Your thoughts and prayers are always welcome, and certainly greatly appreciated on a day such as yesterday.

Personally, this was a frightening moment wher e I expected gunmen to walk through the unlocked doors s h o ot ing. I inst ant ly env i si o ne d a group of at tackers shooting at will because if they had gotten by securit y there would be no one to stop them. Luckily, it was a lone gunman and thankfully the House of Commons security killed the terrorist before he could kill the Prime Minister and those of us in the Caucus Room.

I thought of my wife, our children and our grandchildren and wondered if I would ever see them again. An incredible calm passed over me in spite of the fear. I was so proud of my fellow MPs (especially former police officers and CF personnel) who immediately took action to protect all of us.

They, and others, barricaded the four

doors and posted a ‘guard’ on both sides of each door with flag poles as weapons – which was all we had available in the room.

It was a long day as we were in lockdown until about 9:30 p.m., not knowing what was going on. This was definitely not a ‘normal’ day at the office.

However, others suffered much more.

It is heartbreaking to see the photos of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Of ficer Patrice Vincent, t wo Canadian Forces members murdered by cowards this week. This morning in the House of Commons Prime Minister Harper thanked all the men and

women who stand in the face of evil to keep our Canadian values and people, safe.

“In the past couple of decades we see across the world increasing places where the planet is descending into savagery and there are people who, every day of their lives, stand on guard for this countr y and for all of us. We obviously want to convey our

gratitude to these two servicemen and their families, but also to all the people who undertake this extremely dangerous work on behalf of our country.”

My colleagues and I thank you again for your kind words and concern. We are back at work today, more resolved than ever to uphold the Canadian values of democracy and freedom.

Wow what an outstanding October thus far. Considering the reality of the last couple years, reality can be harsh, but even most prefer to forget last year. We were shoveling a foot and a half of snow and it wouldn’t go away!

I was walking from a tree stand this past weekend and thought, “geez, it’s too hot for this!” I actually stopped dead to scold and give myself that reality check.

Last night, sitting high above in the fully leafless trees, a robin landed next to me on a branch and scolded me. I figured she heard about my reality check. She was good to see this time of year.

Part of that reality check is preparedness, something we all want to put off, but it’s a fact of life for us Canadians, as winter stalks us. Little things like snow tires, gas line antifreeze to remove water from summer gas tanks, snow shovel and ice windshield scrapers, which some may have already used. Also, the most important winter survival tool, the cell phone and a battery charger that stays in the

Her having one gives me a huge sigh of relief for her highway travel. I think she is even enjoying it. Now, I don’t know if it was the robin’s scold or the reality check, but I am actually ready and fully prepared this year.

I didn’t hook up the snow plough to the quad yet, somehow, I think of that plough as a jinx every year as it snows every time I put it on or take it off, so I purposely ignored that one. I even checked the truck battery posts and cleaned one up that had battery corrosion build up, which would have surely let me know when it’s cold and at the worst timing. I put in the snow shovel, gas line antifreeze to clear the gas tank, checked battery fluid level and connections, even bought some of those chemical hand warmers for my kit in the truck.

As it gets a little colder, I will throw extra clothes and a blanket in the truck also.

The only thing I have to do is address my headlight issue, something we will be using a lot as we lose daylight saving time in just a week. My truck being a little… let’s say mature has them new at the time, space age chip resistant plastic material

headlight lenses; well, apparently no one was supposed to drive these vehicles into their “maturity.” My headlight lenses are now sand blasted from gravel roads and that new salt substitute they put on roads likes to bond with certain parts of vehicles, one being the headlight lenses.

I bought a kit to sand them down, polish and buff them up, but we all know that is just a temporary fix, new glass replacements in the thousand dollar range is mind boggling.

So, again, I am thinking of installing those new “Star Fire” bulbs, which totally blind me when I’m on the highways, but they are legal and most say, although they are bright, it doesn’t bother them much.

It may be because I use my natural night vision a lot, because they actually hurt my eyes. Then there are the vehicles that also have the additional driving lights with the “Star Fire” bulbs. They are so blinding to myself that I have to look at the shoulder line of the highway to drive when I have one of those oncoming at night.

Driving lights should be regulated or have mandatory courtesy courses much like driving with “brights” on.

I most likely will install the Star Fire bulbs, so with my bad headlight lenses it will be only as bright as normal vehicles;

I was given a set of driving lights which I may also install. But I will have a toggle switch set up so I can turn them OFF when on the busy highways, as you can even with built in ones that come standard on many vehicles.

Oops…was I going on about headlights again…ha ha…sorry, well to change the subject only a week left in 2014 bowhunting season for most of Alberta, as rifle hunting season starts November 1st.

I have been thoroughly enjoying my bow hunting season and consider it a success even if I am not shooting much, just because the adventures have been outstanding. It’s not over yet, so I will enjoy what we have left and make use of that time Get out there folks and also enjoy what we have for an awesome autumn!

As well as this, Boudreau is highly invested in supporting local artists and artisans, most of which are also into recycling. She has work from a local photographer; metal creatures made from discarded garden tools; quilts; throws; knitted and crocheted items; jewelry made from silver spoons; scroll work; small wooden animals; flower sculptures made from lights; wire and stones; clothing made from recycled fabric; and bird houses made from reclaimed wood. She also takes some things on a consignment basis.

It was just recently, during a conversation with a customer, Boudreau realized that what she is doing is important.

Laughing she says that she thought she was just a lowly shop girl until this fellow asked her what we thought we would be leaving for future generations in this age of planned obsolescence where everything is made of plastic, staples and particle board.

He told her that she was surely one of the keepers of the past and that the things she saves and passes on to others are what will

be the treasures left for the future.

This gave yet more significance to her more than 30 years of passion for recycling; a passion that she got from her father who rarely threw anything away. There was not much that went into the trash when she was growing up and there’s not much that goes there now.

This endeavor has brought new life to Irma’s Main Street, bringing people in from as far as Toronto this past summer to share walks down memory lane and the making of new memories. Boudreau said, “I have met so many lovely people and have learned so much in this short time in this business. I look forward to many years of sharing stories and the things we have here with the people who come to visit Like it Never Was. I love coming here each day and doing something I love.”

Like It Never Was When you come in the door at Like it Never Was on 5008-​50 Street (Main Street) in Irma, you might see Diane Boudreau at work on her 1948 Singer sewing machine, in her back workroom stripping a piece of furniture or reupholstering a chair.

will announce your arrival and she will be delighted to show you around and answer any questions you may have.

This little shop came into being when her spouse, ‘Hubby,’ started laughingly complaining that living in their house was starting to feel like he was in an episode of Hoarders. Boudreau has long had a love of recycling and saving things from going to landfill. She takes things that are slated for the dump and brings them a new life by fixing them up and/or re-purposing them and inventing something new.

Starting with a Facebook page called Like it Never Was. this past November she began selling her wares. Her sales did not keep up with her production, so the couple started looking for a space to publicly share the things she had fixed up.

They fell in love with a building that had sat empty on Main Street for the past 12 years. It was once the Club Café, which served Irma great food from 1926 to 1986.

Later, it was the Irma Family Restaurant.

This little building needed some TLC. In March, Boudreau, ‘Hubby’ and many good friends dove in to fix the place up.

They soon realized that they did not have enough stock for the store, so ‘Hubby’ went on a shopping trip to Ontario.

From antique shop to antique shop he went and in May they had their grand opening.

Since then, many other treasures have found their way into the store. Boudreau

It’s so mind boggling to sit and listen to the people of the soil relating all the new technology that they are learning to apply to the modern day farming. All the old timers, me included, just simply shake our heads.

We hear of the marvels of GPS in applying sprays and guiding those huge air seeders pulled by multi-hundred horsepower tractors. The cost of land, equipment, all chemicals and fertilizers are like the net worth of some countries you’d think.

All this points to the scene that perhaps the day of independent farmers is coming to an end. It just makes you wonder if the amount of money required to operate for a year would be hard to recover in a bad weather year that made harvest a failure or even if the markets suddenly disappeared or countries suddenly wouldn’t buy our offerings.

The news of world events is really scary. In one memorable time back

a ways in 1929, it did happen--the markets failed. It was worse than we can even imagine today. I’m saying it could happen and what would be the consequence in today’s world?

The food banks, even in today’s booming times, are even now overtaxed and running short. Now there are no little farms to speak of: milking cows, raising chickens, or straw pile pig factories like we saw years ago. All our food comes from big corporations and are not likely to survive a collapse of any magnitude, you think?

There are no creameries now, or egg grading stations like we had here in Vermilion, or a hog buying station anywhere around that I’ve seen or heard of anywhere. How long would it take for a like industry to be rebuilt?

We might get pretty hungry in the meantime if the big transports that bring stuff from faraway places decide they can’t haul with the price of food, so maybe even if it’s available could we pay the cost they’d be asking? There wouldn’t be any little farmers to supply us with garden stuff and dairy products.

Remember, they are all gone like the

dinosaurs nowadays.

I have a cousin who lives in the Drayton Valley area. He has saved some old horse driven equipment and he thinks he’d like to try farming a bit using the same. Good luck! He might be able to feed himself, but could he also pay the taxes in that high-priced land?

Cash would be scarce. I think a person would be hard-pressed to feed himself, let alone pay for any modern conveniences. Think about that. If the growing of all our food is in the hands of corporate farms, I believe everyone would be hard-pressed to eat well without them.

In my childhood, I remember Mom setting hens on eggs and raising her own chickens, same with turkeys and geese too. There was no store bought chicken starter or the like. We raised our own pigs and our milk cows supplied all our dairy needs, and even cheese sometimes. Our garden was carefully tended and made use of for all the potatoes, vegetables, and even fruit, like rhubarb and raspberries, to supplement the wild saskatoons and cherries.

We lived well in those days, but I’m wondering if all that could ever be repli-

cated in today’s world. I guess we’ll just have to hope that the powers that be will put a rein on the inflation that has even with the good wages caused our buying power to be depleted severely.

The prices of ever ything are SO high, it sure is hard to contend with. We are paying ten times more now than in the 1950s. Harmonicas I bought for $25 back then are now worth close to $250 today. I think pretty well everything follows suit.

I paid $3,800 for a 1973 Gran Torino Ford. I’m thinking a person would be lucky to get a similar car now for $38,000.

I think it would do us all good and well to start looking at finding alternative ways to grow some of our own food and take heed of the small hometown businesses that cater to keeping food production closer to home. Give the small producer a chance to take up the slack and maybe feed us when things go sour.

I would like a nice little cabin, close to a lake with some perch in it and some moose roaming around in the bush nearby. Sounds like happiness.

Logan James grew up in Vermilion and moved to Lloydminster when he was 18. He now lives in Airdrie where he gets radio play three times a day

for three months at AIR 106.1 in Airdrie, does an interview and plays at the station once a week, and has recently done a half hour show with them.

James began to play guitar when he was 17 years old after he watched the movie Walk the Line and thought, “ I wanna do that! ” That ’s when he discovered that his aunt had an old 1986 Yamaha stored in her closet.

She gave it to James and he promptly learned how to play “Walk the Line” for his first song and never took a guitar lesson. He still plays this guitar at gigs today.

James listened to Jack White growing up and together James and lead guitarist Adam writes songs on the same wave length as Adam Ganton who adds beautiful guitar par ts to them that fit perfectly with James’ writing. Ganton, who is from Vermilion, is “lightning in a bottle,” according to James.

James has traveled with Brett Kissell and recorded with several big name musicians and singers including: Ross Nykiforuk, a member of the Northern Pikes, who played the keyboard and p iano o n Jam es’ al bum s, S m o key Fe n n e l l w h o h a s b e e n n o m i n ate d three times for the best steel guitar player award; drummer Aiden Currie; bass guitar Brandon Ziola; and Allison Granger, who won the 2013 CCMA for best fiddle player, played fiddle on

didn’t help so he sat down and wrote a song about how life would be without her.

It ’s been a challenging week for all Canadians. Tragic events have taken the lives of two of our citizens in service. We know their names. We know the violent and deeply disturbing circumstances through which their lives were taken.

We know the names of the perpetrators. And it is perhaps our knowledge that these men are also our fellow citizens that most shakes us. It evokes intense anger, disbelief, and sadness.

That those living among us, born here in our beloved Canada, are responsible for such cowardly acts impacts each one of us profoundly. We cannot look over the horizon for answers or to assign blame. This chaos did not arrive from elsewhere. These two killers, striking within the same week, were citizens of the free world. Our world.

Ye s t e r d ay, I s p o k e w i t h a n e w Canadian. The joy she expressed over having just attained Canadian Citizenship was like a rainbow after a raucous thunderstorm. It’s not the first time I’ve been reminded to appreciate the good fortune of having been born Canadian. In the context of this

The Gravity Of Belonging week ’s events, though, those brief moments spent in her presence acted as a gentle whisper reminding me to breathe and also to review what it means to be Canadian.

T h e 2 014 M a s s ey L e c t u r e s a r e presented by former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson. Her topic is “Belonging: The Paradox of Citizenship”. Although I’ve yet to discover a Massey topic that doesn’t intrigue me, this one somehow seems particularly relevant to our nation right now. What are some of the responsibilities of citizenship? What impact does our sense of belonging or not belonging have upon our sense of self?

Dark forces such as those we’ve witnessed over the past few days traumatize all that is good within us. Our first response includes anger/fear/ vengeance. We are outraged, shocked that anyone would seek to undermine what we perceive Canada to represent on the global landscape: Peace, Order, Freedom. A welcoming place where every citizen has an opportunity to become a contributing member of community. To be included. To belong.

The sudden eruption of evil awakens the worst within us. Our inner warrior stirs from slumber and staggers into menacing battle stance. Our sense of securit y has been threatened. Innocent, defenseless, good

people have been mowed down. A symbolic monument of honour has been desecrated. The place where our democratic government deliberates has been sullied. We have been violated. Canadians are justified in our collective indignation.

But af ter the fog of instant reaction lifts, our stability and confidence r e t u r n s . We ar e n ot war r i o r s . We are not a vengeful people who, even when provoked by lost causes, can so fluidly transform ourselves into what we are not: an angr y mob willing to compromise our longstanding values in order to punish with venom an as yet unknown, faceless target. We will instead conduct ourselves with calm a n d r e a s o n, awar e t h at ve n g ef u l, knee-jerk response will not diminish our pain any more swiftly.

Questions remain: how is it that a few among us can become so disenfranchised, so alienated from themselves and from their communities that they are driven to inflict harm upon innocent fellow citizens? What kind of illogical warp serves as impetus for such aberrant behaviour? Is the absence of ‘belonging’ in any way related to a festering desire to align oneself with others who substitute that absence with the illusory power earned through the glorification of deviance and lawlessness?

We who occupy the space wherein compassion, freedom, peace, human dignity and respect instruct our lives cannot possibly comprehend the motives that fuel a chaotic mind and soulless character. Such endeavours are best left to those qualified to offer

opinion or remedy.

Nothing brings forth national unity more than events immensely good or immensely bad. This time it’s the latter. We acknowledge that we have been unjustly harmed, but we will not surrender to our injur y. We mourn.

We re m e m b er we l l t h e fa l l e n a n d support their survivors. We will heal.

We stand. Then we step forward with gentle hearts and reasonable minds, resolving more than ever to ensure that Canada will remain always more inclusive and welcoming than suspicious and afraid.

We have had lots of fantastic fall weather this year and I hope the sunshine and the above average temperatures will continue. With Halloween around the corner, it is a fun time for children of all ages to come up with fun and interesting alter ego costumes.

Another great Halloween activity is a pumpkin carving party, where the humble pumpkin is turned into a jack-o-lantern.

To do this, you will need a sharp knife to cut off the top; the cut can be a straight, curvy or a zigzag. Lay down an old edition of the Vermilion Voice to place all the scooped out seeds upon. Use a large rounded table spoon to get the seeds out.

to carve into your pumpkin.

Center a stable votive or tea light candle inside the pumpkin to light up that wonderful glowing face. October is fire prevention month, so remember to never leave a burning candle unattended. There are now battery operated LED lights that you can put in your pumpkin that cost about $5.00. These lights may be better than a candle if you want to later use the pumpkin to eat, as they will not leave any soot on the inside of the pumpkin.

The pumpkin seeds can be roasted for a healthy treat. Remove most of the vegetable matter off the seeds. Do not wash them as you will lose some of the great flavor. To two cups of pumpkin seeds stir in one tablespoon of butter or oil and sprinkle with one teaspoon of iodized sea salt. Spread the seeds on a foil lined cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees for about 20 minutes, stirring once, halfway

through the baking time. When made fresh, you can eat these yummy snacks, shell and all.

Your Halloween jack-o-lantern can be turned into pumpkin puree the next day by roasting it. To roast the pumpkin, whole or quartered, with the skin on, in a roasting pan with a little water added.

Place in a 300 degree oven until the pulp is soft and cooked. Let the pumpkin cool enough so you can scoop out all the pulp, to be pureed in a blender. Use the pureed pumpkin in pies, muffins and various other recipes.

Trick or treat, smell my feet; give me something good to eat. Another Halloween tradition is the variety of treats, usually gathered in pillowcases, door to door. When I was a kid, my favorite was always the popcorn ball, and I would trade anything in my treat collection to get more popcorn balls. I must admit, some popcorn

balls were better than others. This recipe was perfected several decades ago, out of my passion for the perfect popcorn ball.

Popcorn balls 10 cups of popped popcorn 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup light or white corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vinegar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla In a heavy bottomed saucepan, stir in all the ingredients, except the popcorn and vanilla, and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes or until the mixture has reached the hardball stage, (260 degrees F). Cool slightly and stir in the vanilla. Pour this mixture over the popcorn, stirring to coat each kernel. With buttered hands, quickly form into balls. Makes 12 – 2 1/2 inch balls. Happy Halloween.

Learning Cafe Follow Up Nicole Crossan Reporter

Ve r m i l i o n C L A S S h a s r e c e n t l y published the results of the Communit y Learning Cafe that took place June 4, 2014 at the Elks Hall in Vermilion. The organizers of this event send out a giant thank you to the educators, learners, tutors, residents, representatives of non-profit and community organizations, local business owners, managers, and employees who came out to this event.

“Our goals were to inform and showcase learning providers, organizations and resources currently available in the County of Vermilion River; build relationships; engage community members in becoming actively involved in their communities; identify opportunities and resources which could help us, as a communit y, to better support the needs of learners, businesses, and agencies; and, ultimately, come up with a vision for what could be done in the County of Vermilion River to create a vibrant learning community,” said Chandra Blair, CEO of CLASS. Throughout the duration of the day, to the surprise of some, it was discovere d that the C ount y of Ver milio n River already has a lot of components that make it a vibrant learning community; however, many suggestions were made for improvements.

Many fur ther educ ation c our ses were suggested, including, First Aid, Employment Readiness, Show Me The Money (to teach people how to find grants), and Academic Upgrading for adults. A few of the major gaps

that were discussed were the access to technology by some members of the county and community, chances for seniors to share their knowledge with younger generations, services for Temporary Foreign Workers, the scarcity of housing and rental properties people who want to have new learning experiences, but who are unable to access all the resources available in our communities due to personal development and logistical gaps like child care, long work hours, and travel expenses.

Solutions to fill these gaps were also suggested. One of the solutions was to hire a communications specialist who would aid in the alignment of various groups offering courses, create a mentorship program, find ways to provide childcare to learners, market and promote events, find a way to access grants and bursaries among other duties. The plan of action is to follow-up on what was discussed by starting to implement some of the strategies that were suggested.

As par t of this plan, an event is being planned in 2015 in celebration of Family Literacy Day. The goal of this event is to assess the learning needs of the larger community in order to discover what courses and programs will be offered in the Fall of 2015.

The Vermilion Sheep club held its organizational meeting on October 17.

This year our club is offering the following projects: sheep, canine and photography.

A Day With Louise Cartwright Nicole Crossan Reporter

“I have never met anyone like her before. She gives and gives and expects nothing in return,” Chandra Blair said of Louise Cartwright.

Cartwright has a list of people she prays for, sends birthday cards to, and attends the graduations of.

“I especially tr y to remember the missionaries because I have always wanted to be a missionary, but that door was closed for me 48 years ago when I was blessed with a husband,” Cartwright commented.

For some of the people on her list, she has continued to do this for many years despite their family circumstances and travels to new locations.

Although Cartwright may not get a

return for her efforts, many people have taken notice and they have asked for this opportunity to show their gratitude and sincere appreciation for all she is doing and has done to keep them feeling like they are loved, even if from afar. “ You wouldn’t believe how much these seemingly small acts of kindness have influenced myself and my children over the years,” one recipient of Cartwright’s love commented.

Cartwright has nominated Brenda Lee, “because I have always admired her. She has been a real quiet person that goes behind the scenes and works in our community.”

PUBLIC NOTICE SIDEWALK AND ROADWAY SNOW REMOVAL

The Town of Vermilion strives to keep our streets and sidewalks clean and safe during the winter season. We concentrate our efforts on the downtown areas during the evenings or early morning. Residential streets are done between 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, this is the most efficient time to do the residential areas as most vehicles are off the roadways.

Roadway Snow Removal Prior to any snow removal on a roadway, we place a portable “no parking” sign in the area stating that snow removal will happen within 24 hours and you should not park on the street. This advance notice provides property owners enough time to have their vehicle removed from the roadway before the snow clearing starts. Any vehicle left on a roadway 24 hours after a portable “no parking” sign has been placed will be subject to towing and a fine. We are looking forward to working with you to help ensure your vehicle does not get towed this winter season.

Sidewalk Snow Removal All property owners and tenants are responsible to remove snow and ice from any sidewalk adjoining their property within 48 hours of snow or ice forming on the sidewalk. Please note snow and other materials should not be deposited onto the roadways. Failure to do so can result in fines issued, and/or sidewalk cleaned at the owner’s expense. Please make arrangements with friends or neighbors to assist with snow removal in the event that you are away for extended periods of time.

Curb Ramp Removal All rubber curb ramps or other driveway aids should be removed from the street by the first snowfall. When these rubber mats and other driveway aids are left behind our snow blower may suck them up when we are cleaning the street causing serious damage to our equipment. The cost of these repairs may be charged to the property owner. To prevent your ramps and Town equipment from being damaged, please remove the ramps during the winter season.

Please help your community and your neighbourhood and do your part in the snow removal program.

Company’s Coming To Museum Auction

The Vermilion Heritage Museum has started an exciting silent auction on their Facebook page, “To raise money to assist with a matching grant that will help offset the cost of shingling the roof,” Audrey Chesterman explained.

In addition, they are looking for volunteers to sit on their board at their upcoming AGM on October 30.

Did you know that Dr. Richard Starke, Ve r m i l i o n - L l o y d m i n s t e r M L A h a s presented awards to numerous people in the County of Vermilion River who have century farms? The awards have traditionally been presented at the Vermilion Agricultural Fair and are called the Alberta Century Farm and Ranch Award.

In order to qualify for such an award, farm families need to do their research.

This is where people like Audrey Chesterman and Jean Murie have stepped in to help find out the history of not only the plot of land, but also of the families who have lived there and anything they might have donated to the Vermilion Heritage Museum.

There are other reasons people need museums, library archives, and genealogical websites. Sometimes families live far away from one another and would like to share photos, birth, marriage, and death certificates, pedigree charts, awards lists, journals, and other historical documents. In other instances, a member of a family suddenly becomes famous or is given a post-mortem award of distinction and people start to become interested in that person’s places of birth, baptism, marriage and death; any and all photos that have been taken, newspaper articles about that individual; and other historical facts about that person. been numerous cases recently where later generations discover that someone in their direct line is either historically famous or an aboriginal, Métis, or has other native heritage and the family would like to find out more about the history of their relatives and what their experiences were.

In order for there to be places for people to find this type of information, it is essential to have a community of support for museums, historical sites, library archives, and the methods used to share the information stored at these places with people around the world.

One of these sites, our local Heritage Museum, needs your help. They need people to fill the volunteer board positions and to donate to the cause by participating in their new fundraising drive called the Vermilion Museum Silent Auction.

“We just need you there to help with the decision-making,” Jean Murie stated.

Board meetings are on the third Thursday of every month, except for December, and there isn’t much work involved, since the current board members are taking care of most of that.

One of the packages that will be auctioned off is the Jean Pare Collection, which consists of signed “Company’s Coming” cookbooks, aprons, a jacket, a t-shirt, a license plate, and a hat.

This auction is an opportunity for people to donate antiques, gift certificates, products, services and Christmasthemed arts and crafts to be auctioned off on-line in packages. Some of the items from the museum (like duplicates) will also be included in the auction.

Update: Museum volunteers met with the Town of Vermilion on October 21 in regards to a donation towards the Raise the Roof campaign. Later in the week, they were told they were approved for $7,000 donation, which brings the total raised to $10,000. The museum now has about a quarter of the amount needed to fix the roof.

Jean Pare who lived in Vermilion from 19592005, published 200 cookbooks and retired in November 2010 was in attendance at the “Afternoon Tea” session with Chef McGrady at the Vermilion Regional Centre.

Snapshot Day Brightened Annual Book Sale

“Get your picture taken in our photo booth for Snapshot Day in the Library!” a sign greeted visitors to the Vermilion Public Library. By 1:00 p.m. seventy visitors had already had the opportunity to choose from a selection of Minions, a Very Hungry Caterpillar, a Princess, a hot dog, Superman, and other fun carnival cut outs and snap a picture on the conveniently located laptop.

Visitors had the options of emailing the photos to themselves and/or to give the library permission to place the photos on the display board behind the librarian’s front desk next week.

Libraries across Alberta were asked to pick a day where they could write a snapshot of a typical day at each library’s location. The busiest day of the year was chosen to give a good indication of how well-used our local library is. Throughout the day on October 21, records were kept of how many questions were answered by library staff, how many people came through the door, and what the stories and events of the day were. These were then compiled into what is called a Snapshot of the Vermilion Public Library and submitted to their funding agencies.

Chambers Breakfast Kicks Off Small Business Week Nicole Crossan Reporter

A delicious breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and bacon were served to those in attendance at the Annual Kickoff Breakfast that is put on by the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce for Small Business Week.

A transfer announcement by the first speaker at the Kickoff Breakfast, Sergeant Mike McGinley, saddened audience members who will be sad to see this pillar of the Vermilion community go, yet all congratulated him on his future prospects. He also spoke of a time when the local police force was short staffed and how many community programs suffered due to this shortage.

As of May 2014, the Vermilion police force is fully staffed with the addition of two female members who both came from eastern Canada. Corporal Jane Bear of Kananaskis will be taking his place.

Daryl Watt, County of Vermilion River Reeve, spoke next and said the County of Vermilion River staff are currently working to complete services, budgets, an d m ak in g p l an s to u p d ate t h e ir Census in 2015.

Watt announced the election of three new counselors in last fall’s election which means nearly half of the council members are new.

“They add the new blood that helps us to progress as a county,” Watt explained

enthusiastically.

“What was once a modest mowing service program, has now increased to a whopping 2100 kilometres per year being mowed by the County of Vermilion River. As service levels increase, so do taxes,” Watt explained in answer to the questions many ratepayers ask.

“The Council does its best to keep taxes at a reasonable rate.”

This year, the fiftieth anniversary of the County of Vermilion River was celebrated and 35 years for the Natural Gas Utility which is the largest rural distributor in Alberta and moves four times as much volume as the next largest Gas Co-op in the province. The County Gas Co-op serves over 3100 customers a year.

Watt said part of the Alberta advantage is that our province has the cheapest gas in the world. He added ratepayers save a large percentage in gas costs when they are compared to the other gas utilities in Alberta.

The Count y said they are working hard to connect and engage with ratepayers, with the help of their new Communications Officer, they have implemented social media strategies for both Facebook and Twitter to increase traffic to the County website vermilionriver.com.

“Progress and development in the County is proceeding at a rapid pace.

There have been approximately 800 oil wells drilled in the County this past year,” Watt explained, “this has increased the traffic to 200 heavy vehicles a day on some county roads that were made to handle light traffic. As a result, the Count y implemented a communit y peace officer program, currently with two officers, to ensure oilfield traffic traveled on designated roads and oil companies have agreed to pay for 85

per cent of the road maintenance on the roads their companies are designated to use.”

After a delightful meal catered by Red Feather Ridge catering, attendees of the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce were treated to a dessert menu of speakers including Vegreville-Wainwright MP Leon Benoit, recently back from Ottawa.

Benoit continued to say the actions of the attacker was that of a troubled young man motivated by on-line driven hate but added that although the shooter was of Muslim faith, he added that members of the Muslim community are the ones giving information to the Canadian government about planned attacks on Canada’s infrastructure.

Beniot began his address to the small businesses by saying how only a few days ago, he was uncertain that he would not only see this day but be able to attend the luncheon.

After questions during the luncheon, Benoit put minds to ease by commenting on the events surrounding the Ottawa Parliament shooting this past week. He went on to recount the events as they unfolded around him that day in which he thought was a group of gunmen storming the House and said he felt a freezing terror come over him as other members of the House worked together to barricade themselves in.

He said with distinct emotion that, at the time, he firmly believed he would never see his family again. After the attack was over he said that due to the quick thinking and actions of the House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers, he is

Kelly said some things that can sidetrack a business can involve taking a risk and added it is important to embrace taking a risk and all achievements come with a sacrifice.

Vivian said she was surprised but pleased with the award.

The second award of the presentation went to the Little Shop Of Hair for the Rookie Business Of The Year.

The Employee Of The Year went to Purolator Courier’s Brett Maron and Employer Of The Year went to Shawn Jacula of Re/ Max Prairie Realty who although was not able to attend, commented later that day on

the win.

Fall Classic Rodeo

The rodeo began with Saddle Bronc Riding won by Cody Lane, a second generation cowboy of Olds College, with 64 points. He was the only one in this competition to stay on his horse for the full eight seconds. This was followed by an intense, quick round of barrel racing won by a rider from Lakeland College. Rotary Makes Repairs To Vandalized Lookout The Vermilion Rotary club has worked to repair the damage from this past summer’s vandalism. Sometime between June 14 and 15, vandals struck the Rotary Lookout above the valley along Highway 41 where a flower pot was overturned and destroyed as well numerous bricks were damaged when a bronze plaque was ripped from its base. The brick retaining wall leading down to the valley floor was also damaged during the June act of vandalism. On Saturday, October 18, members of the Vermilion Rotary gathered to help return the Lookout to its original state and once again serve as in informative centre for visitors. Rotary club member Brenda Lee says the club is looking for a few more bricks to complete the Lookout flooring. The lookout was part of the Rotary’s 50 year celebration in Vermilion, and also the centennial celebrations marking the Rotary’s 100 years in service all over the world. “One thing we learned about the Queen is that she eats in seasons,” McGrady explained. Cooks quickly learned not to serve her strawberries in January because they were out of season then.

McGrady mentioned a time when he cooked for Oprah. He was asked to make one large chocolate biscuit cake and 400 small ones for each member of the audience. This cake was the Queen’s favorite tea time treat and Prince William’s as well. Prince William chose this as the groom’s cake when he got married.

McGrady has also cooked for five US Presidents and a few Canadian Prime Ministers, appeared on Oprah, Larry King Live, Fox News Channel, BBC, CBC, MSNBC, and Sky Television and cooked on The Today Show and CBC Early Show in New York.

The Queen has 300 staff members and 100 of them travel with her to her regular locales and less when she travels the world. McGrady was chosen to travel with and cook for the Royal Family for eleven years. McGrady was so well-liked by Princess Diana, that when she and Prince Charles separated, she invited McGrady to become the private chef of Princess Diana and her two sons, William and Harry. After Oprah tasted some of Lady Diana’s favorite sandwiches, Oprah commented on how delicious they were and asked how Lady Di was able to stay so thin eating this type of food.

What Oprah didn’t know that McGrady did was that Lady Di was eating a fat free version of the dishes while Oprah was eating the original version.

JOTA stands for Ham Radio’s “Jamboree On The Air,” which is an annual event where Scouts all over the world learn about ham radios and practice meeting and talking to Scouts and other operators over the radio.

“Many people think that ham radios are a kickback from the past, when actually ham radios are the marriage of computers and radio,” Don Henry explained.

LEASE

Henry helped the Scouts get set up and was there to assist with finding the correct frequencies for the JOTA event on October 19. Richard Bennett, Scout leader, was also there to explain code words. Each Scout then had the opportunity to tune into a frequency and attempt to make contact with other Scouts and their leaders.

The tin roof and angle of the ceiling on the Armoury make this the perfect location to both receive and transmit signals and information over the ham radio housed within.

What Is A Prion?

S c i e nt i s t s are h o p i n g t h at t h e ir discoveries concerning the mammalian brain molecule called a prion will lead to cures for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease in humans, mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) in cattle, and chronic wasting disease in deer, elk, and moose.

The dif ference bet ween an ordinar y brain molecule and a prion is that the prion, found only in the brains of mammals, changes its shape and infects the surrounding cells, which is believed to be the cause of neurodegenerative diseases. In order to solve the myster y of the prion, scientists are investigating why brain molecules c hang e s ha p e an d b e c o m e infe c tious. This research is hoped to result in a major scientific break through, such as a cure for neurodegenerative diseases.

Diseases that are caused by the misfolding of proteins resulting in prions have already had a huge impact on our economy, environment, and food supply as we experienced in

the 2003 crisis caused by the breakout of Mad Cow’s Disease in Alberta.

Since then, prioninstitute.ca reports, “Canada has become a global leader in prion research.”

Jay Ingram, who was named to The Order of Canada (OC) in 2009, has written 13 books about science, has a column in Canadian Wildlife Magazine, hosted CBC Radio’s Quirks and Q uar ks, an d c o - hoste d D i s c over y Channel’s Daily Planet for 16 years.

Almost all of his books have been on the bestseller list and three of them won Canadian Science Writers’ Awards.

Af ter In gr am’s l e c ture in Ll oyd minster on O c to ber 28, he will be coming to Lakeland College Vermilion Campus Alumni Hall on November 14 at 7:00 p.m. to talk about updates on the research surrounding prions. He will be joined by two other world class prion researches based in Alberta: Dr. Stefanie Czub and Dr. Valerie Sim. Dr. Czub is a DVM and has a PhD in neuropathology from the Veterinar y School of the Free Universit y in Berlin, Germany. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Rocky Mountain Laboratory, (NIH), Hamilton, Montana, USA and senior research scientist at the Pathology Institute of the JuliusMaximilians University in Würzburg,

Germany.

Joining the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in 20 01, she currently manages the pathology, virology and wildlife disease sections. The Pathology Section also has the Canadian National Reference Laboratory status and the World Organization for Animal Health Reference Laborator y (OIE) status for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). All Canadian BSE cases have been confirmed by Dr. Czub. She is also a member of the TSE Expert Advisory Group, the Canadian Association of Veterinary Pathologists and the College of Veterinarians of Ontario, an Alberta Prion Research Institute Scholar and Adjunct Professor at the Veterinary School of the University of Calgary, Alberta. Dr. Czub’s research i s fo c u s e d o n n e u r o d e g e n e r at i ve diseases; in the last years, predominantly on prion diseases including BSE, CWD and scrapie.

Dr. Sim joined the Univer sit y of Alber ta in Januar y 20 09 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology. Her research focuses on prion disease pathogenesis, the role of infectious oligomers in this process and how the abnormal structure of prion protein relates to the infectious properties of these diseases. As a clinician scientist

in neurology, 75 per cent of her time is dedicated to basic science research while the remainder is spent doing clinical neurology. Dr. Sim received her BS c H o n. at the Univer sit y of Calgary in 1996, majoring in Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology. She graduated from medical school at the University of Calgary in 1999 and then completed a Neurology residency at the University of Ottawa in 2004. With funding from the Alber ta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, she pursued a postdoctoral fellowship on the basic science of prion disease at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, NIAID, NIH, in Montana.

Ingram wrote about prions in his 2012 book Fatal Flaws: How a Misfolded Protein Baffled Scientists and Changed the Way We Look at the Brain. Ingram hopes to increase awareness about “this elusive protein” by interweaving “biology, medicine, human tragedy, surprise and disbelief [as he] unravels some of history’s most stunning revelations about disease, the brain and infection,” the back of his book reads. A significant increase in research funding has helped Lakeland College move to 20th place on the list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges.

Using data from the 2013 fiscal year, Research Infosource Inc. analyzed research funding and the number of faculty involved in research to compile the list which was released today. Last year, in Research Infosource’s inaugural list, Lakeland College was ranked 46th.

“This ranking is a reflection of the suppor t L akeland College has re c e i ve d fr o m i n d u s tr y, or g a n iz a tions and funding partners to conduct results-producing research,” says Dr. Tracy Edwards, president of Lakeland College. “ My thanks to our applied research team for the excellent work they do collaborating with partners as well as involving our students so they

can develop research skills.”

L a k e l a n d ’s i n c o m e f o r a p p l i e d research rose from $640,000 in 2012 t o $ 2 .6 m i l l i o n i n 2 013 t h a n k s t o investments from numerous partners including Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Western Economic Diversification Canada, Alberta Innovates -Technology Futures, Canada Foundation for Innovation, and Alber ta Innovation and Advanced Education’s Research Capacity Program.

Much of the funding was used to support renewable energy and agriculture research projects at the Vermilion campus including the Alberta Biochar Initiative, construction of a bio-energy centre at the Centre for Sustainable Innovation, and the development and launch of trials related to livestock feed intake, crop input intensity and Jerusalem artichokes (JART).

The Virtue of Compassion Karen King, Vermilion Elementary School Submitted We have been focusing on the virtue compassion for the month of October.

To wrap up this virtue, we are participating in a food drive, in conjunction with Farm Credit Canada, to support our local food banks. The following items are most needed: pasta, rice and sauces, canned meats and fish, packaged nuts, peanut butter, canned goods (beans, soups, stews), canned and powdered milk, canned fruit and vegetables, flour, whole grain cereals, infant formula and baby food. On October 29, FCC will be picking up the grocery items in a tractor to “Drive Away Hunger”. Thank you in advance for talking to your children about the importance of compassion.

The VES Parent Council had a terrific turn out at the AGM on October 20.

Kaylan Zorn and Kathy Crowe continued in the positions of chair and vice chair. Darlene Gourley agreed to remain as treasurer and Sarah Lynn Kennedy became the secretary. Several parents agreed to take leadership roles in other areas to support the VES family.

We are so thank ful to all of our parents for the volunteering they do in our school. The Grade 6 teachers spoke about the changes of location for camp, which will be at Birch Bay this spring. They also shared information about a respect project they will be doing with their classes, in association with the novel, “Hannah’s Suitcase.” Trustee Jim King shared that the board is seeking feedback for the BTPS calendar and that to gather input all parents would be receiving a survey.

Mrs. Doherty shared information about a staff project designed to ensure all students are feeling connected to adults

in the building. Babysitting was also provided to enable parents with smaller children the option to bring their children to the school during the meeting.

At our October 22 AR assembly, Fat Cat presented a cheque to VES for $3,718.00. We appreciate the Servus Credit Union for their generous donation and for, once again, sponsoring our AR (Accelerated Reading) program.

The students were told about the future AR school goals – January’s beach day dance as their halfway goal and Mr. Beecroft’s offer to continue to grow a beard, as long as there are 2000 points earned every month from now until May. Local author, Susanna Pankiw, will be at VES on October 28. Q: MY INSURANCE COMPANY WANTS ME TO GET A WETT INSPECTION ON MY WOOD STOVE. IS THERE A WAY I CAN TELL IF MY STOVE IS CERTIFIED?

A: I have inspected close to a thousand woodstoves and fireplaces and

installed half that many. Here is what I ask potential customers to check.

First of all if the stove has a label, take a picture of it. The same is true of the chimney. I generally can tell from pictures but a label is best. If the stove is older than 1980 it is most likely not going to be certified and a uncertified stove needs to have 48” clearance to combustibles. If it is homemade it is uncertified. If the chimney is damaged or rusted it will fail. If the stove and chimney are certified chances are the install will pass. If there are problems you will likely be able to make slight changes without huge expense. Feel free to send me pictures for free advice. There are problems with about 75% of the installs I see. Most problems can be overcome however. When it comes to wood stoves, your life is on the line – it must be installed right!

HEART with Grade 6 is one month down and students have been learning about basic kitchen terms and nutrition in the kitchen. From designing menus which included meals that contained all four food groups, to actually making healthy treats in the kitchen, students have been enhancing their healthy choice ideas! For the month of October the students will be working in two groups. One group will be doing baking (fractions in the kitchen) and a special project with Mrs. Wagner, while the other group will be working with Mrs. Charron learning the sewing machine and creating their own project.

Any extra fabric (preferably larger

pieces) would be welcomed in the CTS lab for several upcoming projects throughout Grades 5 to 9.

For the month of September the Grade 5’s in CTS with Mr. Starner were working on string art projects. For the month of October students have been doing Vibe with Kerri, focusing on Hope. In the other class, students have started straight line designs.

With only drawing straight lines, students are creating various patterns, and then highlight these with colours.

What is sportsmanship? Sportsmanship is fair and honest behaviour in activities. We usually relate it to sports but this quality can be appreciated in any activity during our daily lives. What are the qualities of sportsmanship? It is all about being cooperative, fair, gracious, honorable and humble.

Over the past week, students at Dewberry School have had ample opportunity to display many sportsmanlike qualities during a variety of events.

Keagan Rewuski experienced first-hand the amazing atmosphere at the Cross Country Provincials in Okotoks on October 18! With over 800 runners competing, it was hard not to feel the excitement in the air. The Cross Country world is fantastic at demonstrating sportsmanship qualities. Although the competition was fierce, Keagan showed that he could sustain his running times and completed the 4k race (113/124), even running with an ankle injury!

Phenomenal job, Keagan! We look forward to your continued improvements for next year!

Golden Western Championships For Rustler Crew Colleen Symes Submitted

On paper you wouldn’t think Lakeland College Rustler Crew would stand a chance against teams from universities such as UBC, University of Victoria, and the University of Alberta.

But on the water Lakeland proves that it doesn’t matter how large in numbers your crew is, if you have the right people in the right boat, results can be golden.

That was the case October 18 as the Rustler Crew won gold in novice women’s coxed 4 and novice men’s coxed 4 at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships in Calgary. It is the third year in a row that Lakeland has won races at the championships.

“Double gold feels really good. Both boats deserved the wins,” says Peter Walsh, longtime coach of the Rustler Crew.

Members of Lakeland’s men’s 4 are Andrew Saikaley, Riley Wiens, Grayson Wagner, Randy Paulgaard, Claire Hinse of the University of Calgary served as coxie for the race. The women’s 4 team consists of Terra Throndson, Katie Boychuk, Alexx Galesloot, Brittany McQueen, and coxie Tara Sturges.

“I was cautiously optimistic going into the races but it’s rowing – you never know what might happen,” says Walsh.

Junior B Tigers vs St Paul

Offence scored, defence roared in Marauder playoff victory Cathy Wolters Reporter

When it counted, the guys in the trenches dug in to secure the Vermilion Marauder’s second victory of the season, and their first playoff win in two years, with a 28-14 defeat of the Vegreville Vortex last Saturday.

Vermilion’s offensive line provided pass protection and blocking, particularly in late in the first quarter and through the second, when the Marauders put up the three touchdowns they needed for the win. But it was the defence that secured the win by holding up the home team in the second half.

The Vortex scored first, at 8:24 of the opening quarter, aided by a roughing the passer penalty. The Marauders tied the score with less than minute left in the quarter.

After forcing Vegreville to turn over the ball on downs, the Marauders started their possession on the Vortex 30. Quarterback Colton Katuski kept for a seven-yard gain and then connected with Noah Sanson who took the ball to the 11. Brayden Chilibeck powered to the four.

Katuski thought he scored on a hurryup play up the middle, but the Marauders were called for illegal procedure and were pushed back five yards. Donovan Yaceyko would ramble the nine yards unimpeded and then convert the TD. A safety touch at 10:35 of the second quarter broke the tie and the Marauders would stay in front for the rest of the game.

Vegreville started the quarter on their own 22, but another Marauder unnecessary roughness penalty moved the Vortex to their 44. Axel Myshak and Yaceyko tag teamed a five-yard Vortex loss. An illegal procedure penalty pushed Vegreville back another five.

The long snap got by the punter who was pursued by a number of Marauders including Tyson Alexander. He blocked the eventual kick attempt and fell on the ball in the end zone for the safety.

After the kick off the Marauders took just five plays to reach the end zone for their second touchdown. This time it was a Vegreville unnecessary roughness call that gave the Marauders a 15-yard bonus after an 11 yard pass completion to Yaceyko. Chilibeck galloped for 12, Tyson Pashulka added another five with full back Tyler Bilusack providing the three -yard plunge across the goal line. The convert was low and blocked putting the Marauder total at 15 with 7:33 left in the half.

Their final score of the half came after an interception by Sam Froelich, the first of three picks by the Marauder secondary.

Starting from their own 27, Brandon Maida got behind the home defenders for

a 24-yard pass and run to the Vegreville 51. Maida was an offensive force with five receptions for 133 yards on the afternoon.

On the next play, the Marauders perfectly executed a reverse from Katuski to Chilibeck to Yaceyko who legged down the sidelines leaving the defenders in the dust for his second score. He supplied the convert for a 22-7 lead 49 seconds before the 3 minute warning.

More big defensive efforts kept the score that way going into the second half. Safety Carter Usenik provided a TD-saving tackle on the Vortex’s Payten Baxandall. Devon Winter intercepted a pass in the end zone as the ball was touched, bobbled and deflected into his hands.

The Marauders would again march down to the Vortex red zone, with the bulk of the yards on a 68-yard Maida reception.

Tanner Throndson would add another 10-yard pass for a first down inside the Vegreville 10. However, penalties including time count violation and unnecessary roughness, resulted in the Marauders turning the ball over on downs.

Both defences would step up their game in the second half. The Vortex contained the Marauders and the Marauders blitzed the Vortex quarterback. Besides the blitzkrieg, the Marauder defense also forced fumbles and grabbed another interception. Both teams would also score a touchdown.

Vegreville’s touchdown came after Katuski fumbled a snap that was recovered on the 22. It would take 3 tries from inside the two-yard line before the Vortex would score and convert the touchdown with 22.6 seconds left in the third quarter.

Vegreville had two drives stopped by the Marauder defense. Chilibeck recovered a fumble forced by Winter and Jacob Clampitt. However, the Marauders didn’t get anywhere and Vegreville fans got excited when the Vortex moved to the Marauder 18 aided by a roughing the passer call on Ryley Bates. But Vegreville’s first play resulted in a holding call putting them 1and 20.

Bates, who was a leading tackler in the game, would atone for the penalty by getting into the backfield causing a loss of three and then joined William Snider on a sack that put Vegreville 3rd and 38. Bates also fielded the punt bringing the ball to the Marauder 36.

Vermilion’s first play was an incompletion that came with a roughing the passer call on the Vortex and an objectionable conduct on Katuski, his second of the game. His third came before the ball was snapped. He made up 16 of those yards himself, and Chilibeck would get the four needed for a first down on their own 51.

Maida picked up another 22 yards

Vegreville didn’t give up, but Usenik’s pick with 14.2 seconds left sealed the Marauder victory.

Points after: The Marauders were tagged for a half dozen objectionable conduct fouls and almost as many unnecessary roughness calls. Even though

some of the calls were questionable, more discipline will be required in the next playoff game…Chilibeck, another offensive star, had 70 yards on the ground and seven in the air…Katuski was 9 for 19 and a 175 yard total…Jeremiah Ball also recovered a fumble…Team chemistry has jelled along with better understanding of positions through the season. This was particularly evident on the offensive and defensive lines.
