RCMP Reports

Kitscoty rcMp searches for witnesses On October 1st, 2014 at approxim ate l y 5:3 0 p.m., K i t s c ot y R C M P responded to a 3 vehicle collision with injuries at the intersection of Highway 16 and Range Road 13. A young female driving a Ford Focus was travelling eastbound on Highway 16, and was unable to stop for the braking vehicle’s in front of her, just prior to entering a construction area. She collided with a Toyota Corolla, pushing it into a Lincoln pick-up truck. The driver of the Corolla had to be extracted from the vehicle and was taken to hospital via ambulance. The driver of the Focus was also taken to hospital via ambulance while the driver of the pick-up sustained no injuries.

Traffic on the highway was backed up

for approximately an hour while Police, Fire and EMS were on scene.

Police are urging motorists to pay closer attention to the traffic and obstacles on the road, while operating their vehicle.

Lyla Marlene Fee

Lyla Marlene Fee (Giles) of Vermilion, passed away on August 28, 2014, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Lyla is survived by her husband Bob, her daughter Danette Belanger (Robert), her son Darcy Fee (Angie), her grandchildren Julia and Elijah Belanger and Brody and Ainsley Fee. Lyla was born on July 14, 1957 in Vermilion to Len and Louise Giles, the second of three children. Lyla was an easy going, loving child who enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends and family. After completion of Lyla’s grade 6 year, the Giles family moved to Grande Prairie, Alberta in 1968. Bob and Lyla were married on March 25, 1978 and resided in Grande Prairie. Children soon followed with a daughter, Danette, born in 1979 and a son, Darcy, born in 1981. In 1989, the Fee family decided to make Vermilion home, returning to small town roots.

Lyla was an amazing woman, fondly remembered for her inspiring spirit and generosity. She was devoted to her husband, kids, grandchildren, and dear friends.

Lyla was passionate about many things. Quilting, sewing, cooking, gardening, crafting, friendships, and of course grandchildren brought fulfillment to Lyla’s life.

Lyla had a remarkable way about her that made people feel special and recognized.

She always took the time to make the people she interacted with feel important and significant.

We will be forever grateful for the medical personnel that cared for Lyla for the duration of her illness. Thank to Dr. Captstick and her incredible team at the Cross Cancer Institute of Alberta; all of the surgeries and treatment programs enabled Lyla to be a survivor for as long as possible. From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank the devoted health care professionals at the Vermilion Health Centre for providing Lyla with the utmost in amazing care over the years and in particular during her short stay in palliative care. Also, special thank you to Dr. Stewart-Hunter for his unrelenting medical care for Lyla from beginning to end, whose expertise and compassion contributed greatly to Lyla’s quality of life. Thank you to the pharmacists at Apple Drugs for your diligence in providing the appropriate medications to Lyla.

Thank you to all of the individuals that helped make Lyla’s funeral service a memorable celebration of her life. We appreciate the compassionate work of Crossroads Funeral Home as they guided us through the service preparations.

Thank you to Fantasy Flowers for capturing Lyla’s spirit in the stunning arrangements prepared for the service. Thank you to Kari Pullyblank and Sheila Seward as well as the members of the First United Church choir for providing the lovely music. A very special thank you to Lyla’s dear friend, Reverend Anne McGrath, who officiated a beautiful service that honoured and celebrated the life of Lyla. Also, thank you to all of the friends and family who participated in the service. Thank you to Toni Teasdale for providing the lunch after the service and to all those who assisted with preparing the Regional Centre before and after the service.

The family of Lyla would like to express our gratitude to all of the wonderful people who took the time to visit with Lyla at home and in the hospital. We are grateful to the people who offered our family support, kind words, touching cards, delicious food, flowers, and love of all kinds. Thank you to all of the friends and family who donated to the Friends of Vermilion Health Care, the Walk of Hope, and other charities of choice.

Your thoughtfulness and generosity are appreciated.

As I drive around our little town it ’s disturbing how many pets and strays you see wandering around. It makes me feel extremely sad on chilly days and cold nights to see animals searching for a warm place to curl up in to try and stay warm.

As our winter is beginning to set in, it’s my hope that pet owners and the community will help keep our pets and stray animals safe and warm this winter. The amount of feral cats in our area is overwhelming and I know a lot of people feel as though nature will take its course and it will help control the population of feral cats, but, when you really think about it, who has caused the stray problem in our community? We have! If all animals were spayed or neutered by their owners they would not be able to reproduce, so, in my mind it is our responsibility to help the homeless animals in our area as well.

Together as a community, we can help prevent serious injury or death among our animal population. I am going to give some

Don’t Let Winter Take Your Pet

helpful tips, especially, for new pet owners on how to keep their pets and the animals of our community happy and safer this winter.

First of all, keep your pets inside! I know we feel as though our pets have fur and it protects them from the cold, but the fact is no matter what the temperature that nasty wind chill can threaten your furbabies life. Your pets are sensitive to severe cold and are at risk for frostbite and hypothermia when they are left outdoors during extreme cold snaps. Exposed skin on their noses, ears, and paws can freeze quickly and cause permanent damage and death.

If your pet must stay outside for much of the day make sure they are protected by using a dry draft-free shelter. The floor of your pet’s shelter should be raised at least a couple inches from the ground with straw or blankets on the floor, any floor which does not have padding will remain cold and your pet will lose its own body heat more quickly, the shelter should only be big enough for your pet to enter, turn around and be able to lay down comfortably. Make sure the door to your pets shelter is not facing the wind direction and have a waterproof flap to cover the opening. The whole purpose is to keep as much heat inside the shelter as possible.

When giving your pet some exercise, make sure they wear insulated jackets, sweaters and something on their feet to protect their paws. You have to remember short haired and course haired animals get cold faster, it is imperative for them to wear doggie clothes while out and about.

Pets who reside outside need access to more water and food then pets who are kept inside. These animals use double the energy to help keep themselves warm in cold temperatures. Make sure to check the water supply on a regular basis to ensure it is not frozen and use plastic bowls so your pet’s moist tongue does not stick and freeze to metal bowls.

Help out the community cat population!

We know there are more stray cats in our town then there are dogs. Put out a shelter on your back deck or somewhere not to close to your house in a treed area if you do not want cats hanging around to close to your house.

Place out some cheap dry food so they have a resource to obtain nutrition. I do this every year in the crawl space of my house and believe me if you put a kitty litter pan in the warm area you have designated for them, they will use it and not void around your house.

Antifreeze, antifreeze, antifreeze, is one of the deadliest chemicals for outside animals

and children as well. The antifreeze has a sweet taste which attracts animals to it and a very small amount ingested by any animal will cause sickness and possible death if not treated in time. Try using a different brand of antifreeze which contains propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol.

Think about being cold, afraid and hungry without anywhere to go. Hunting on a regular basis for a place you can curl up and sleep without feeling the wrath of winter blowing against your body, shivering uncontrollably, what would you do? You would look for some sort of shelter against the cold? So, lastly before starting your vehicle push the lock button to sound your horn, bang the hood of your car to startle any animal which may be hiding close to your engine trying to find a little bit of heat.

I hope these tips will help save a life this winter!! Remember one thing, if it is too cold for you to be outside, it’s too cold for your pet.

The best way to keep your pet happy and safe this winter is to keep them tucked away inside with you. If that is not possible do whatever it takes to keep them protected from the elements of our brutal Alberta winters. They will thank you for it!!

Letter To The Editor Job credit good for business, good for canadians I would like to respond to claims by Dominic LeBlanc and the Liberal Party that our recently-announced Small Business Job Credit will entice businesses to shed workers.

On the contrary, the benefits of the Job Credit are clear. Ninety per cent of businesses in Canada – about 780,000 in total – will benefit, saving small businesses $550 million over the next two years on their Employment Insurance (EI) premiums. Business stakeholders from across the country have lauded the Job Credit as highly-positive news for entrepreneurs and their employees – the backbone of the Canadian economy.

But our Government has not been alone in questioning this bizarre Liberal claim. Dan Kelly, President and CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, has dismissed it, saying: “some have suggested

companies will lay off staff or hold off hiring just to stay under the threshold to receive the credit. I’ve got news for them; a small business owner doesn’t have time to research the eligibility requirements and then carefully manage their payroll to receive a few hundred dollars over two years. But $550-million in the hands of Canada’s entrepreneurs instead of the federal government just can’t be a bad thing.”

Our Job Credit represents yet more action by our Conservative Government to grow the economy and help create jobs. Canadians have created over 1.1 million net new jobs since the depths of the recession, with a vast majority of these being full-time, private sector, high-wage jobs. Once we return to balanced budgets next year, our top priority will be to lower taxes for Canadians even further – just as we have done with the Job Credit.

Although many fond memories and adventures seemed to have slipped by unbelievably fast, I am hoping October will be warm and mild.

I love October for Thanksgiving and the big turkey alone, but it is such a nice colorful neutral month. It doesn’t want to be either summer or winter, and it’s a time of harvest.

Bow hunting was a little hard this last September in relation to deer. As deer are creatures of habit much as humans are, so they can be patterned. However, the weather not cooperating with our farming neighbors can change that.

The deer change their patterns drastically when the combines are in the fields, and as I write this the harvest is slow to say the least, with fields still up due to wet weather.

With a little patience and determination one can still see a lot of deer. I sat in a tree stand last night and that wind made for a chilly sit, but I still saw good bucks. Unfortunately, I watched the deer under my second stand a km away.

With the cooler weather this past weekend, it was a perfect time to process my elk for fine table fare. It took me the entire weekend, but it will be well worth it once it’s done.

On Saturday, I carved up one of the finest roasts and brought it to my wife and into the oven it went. By day’s end, I walked into the house to an oven aroma that made my mouth water.

Served up with fresh garden taters and carrots, it certainly was a meal to cherish. It was perfect and tender. The meal is so much more enjoyable when you have harvested it all yourself.

I finished up late Sunday, with a few breaks for thinly sliced roast sandwiches for lunch and…well...just because it was just so darn good, finished up with grinding up the super lean burger.

I spent a lot of extra time ensuring that the burger was lean and top quality.

When I was done, I actually had to put a heavy rock on the deepfreeze so the lid would stay closed.

It all fit except for three packages of burger weighing in at a couple pounds apiece. What to do with that you wonder?

It was a no brainer…into the big chili pot it went.

My wife’s chili is second to none, not so hot that one can’t taste ingredients.

The only way it gets better is when it has prime lean elk or moose burger for the base. Her chili is outstanding and mouth-watering--and not just from the chili peppers.

Prime burger is the per fect meat source if you think about it--never tough, no bones and grizzle no need for a knife.

It can even be eaten with a spoon. Heck, if you think about it you don’t even need teeth.

With burger you can make mouthwatering meatloaf, chili, soup, lasagna, and a lot of other fancy dishes-not to mention the plain old favorite barbequed burgers.

Unfortunately, with enough chili to feed an army, I can only eat so much for so many days and my tummy says “enough!” Tonight I’m thinking of having actual barbeque burgers.

I love a good steak as much as the next man, however, I think that’s why we do the burger last, because it’s the last cut in the deepfreeze and we have to work our way down to the steaks.

I will also have to make a dent in the deepfreeze so I can harvest a deer and have room, which gives me time and the chance to be a little choosier on which deer I want.

Around The Campfire toes, carrots and corn- which is hard on the back and time consuming. Once it’s done, one can have a full year of tasty garden vegetables.

The weekend before last was a little strange around the garden, I went to set up a tree stand around noon. It was a warm, sunny afternoon. I returned later and as I reached my home two garter snakes came out of my yard and tried to cross the road.

I swerved to miss them, parked and went to get them off the road. They were both fine and long gone, so I walked down to the garden. I couldn’t believe my eyes! There in the lawn all around the garden were 8 more garter snakes.

I picked several up to pet them as the others scurried off in all directions into the tall grass or garden, however for every one that disappeared, another would appear.

I then realized they were coming from that little hole in the ground where the wife found the two dead snakes intertwined-a hole no bigger than a bottle cap.

The snakes came and went from that

tiny hole. We counted over a dozen and of all different sizes. Now I have a soft spot for the little buggers and like them, so it wasn’t creepy for myself.

My wife also, living with me all these years, has no fear of them and will even touch or hold them, however, she was concerned that there were so many and wondered just how many were down there.

I assured her this was just an hibernation den. Garter snakes typically occupy large, communal sites called an hibernacula. In large sites thousands or even tens of thousands will den there for the winter.

This just being a small hibernacula or den is not a nuisance or danger to anything but pests in the spring, so I welcome them and will just leave them be. It will be very interesting to watch in the spring.

I call that little adventure “Garters in the Garden” I don’t think I have seen that many snakes in one place at any given time. There were many more than I see in most years total.

Speaking of being that time of the

year, it is also time for our larger deer family critters to rut. Breeding season is already well on its way for elk and now moose.

Use extreme caution and be aware of animals crossing our rural roads and highways because they may not be of the right mind this time of the year. The biggest danger is the moose now on the move.

One may see more moose now in the next two weeks than in the entire rest of the year. The moose will now move as bulls seek out romance and the cows move to be more selective. Next month and November it will be the deer crossing the highways.

Of Sadness And Gladness Franklin Wolters Columnist

Pi c ture life as a road you travel as you go through the different stages of it.

Happiness is like, say a smooth easy stretch, while sadness is rough and bumpy with the going slow and really difficult. Of course all of the different degrees of what’s in between includes the everyday just being.

My mom would tell me when I was encountering one of those rough spots that the “Lord never puts a burden on you that you can’t bear.” Well, I’m telling you, there were times that I came too close to being swamped and sunk, and certainly wondered.

I think, we need to experience the worst sometimes to really fully appreciate the good and happy times. If all we knew were the good times, don’t you think we would be a bit spoiled?

A good few of the folks who come to settle in this country in the early times came from different and often difficult situations to find a new and better life.

Can you imagine someone coming from a crowded city, perhaps living a hard life under a cruel thumb, then finding a wide

open country with the closest neighbor several miles away and trying to find a ray of happiness to hold onto in all that solitude. But somehow they came to enjoy the independence and freedom and together built a new country.

In the meantime, they did experience all the hardships of being isolated, trying to keep the home fires burning and trying to stay alive when medical help was so far away.

The struggle would either make you strong or kill you. I guess they knew they were taking that chance, but the ones who stayed surely got to know the happiness we have now. Anyone who broke land and tried to change a wilderness into a viable farm could tell you stories of hardship and loss that even to hear of them would break your heart, let alone if you had been there to experience those kinds of things.

I’m talking about scenes of crops that were burnt with drought, frozen early and made practically useless, or perhaps, hailed into the ground. The sadness of standing there looking at the devastation while wondering how you’d get by certainly made the road rough going for a while.

Maybe, though, some wonder ful happiness, like meeting a new friend

or someone sharing gardens if theirs was spared, would hearten you over the rough place.

Hopefully, something happy would ease the pain, like even having a friend just taking the time to sit and visit you in your grief.

I remember the joy I felt when we moved into a new home we had built with all the wonder of running water and the nice furnace that freed us from the chore of tending fires and packing water. That really was a happy time and a smooth road for a way. We were getting used to the idea by then that we’d lost Dad at a young age, and we were getting used to taking the reins of running our farm. That was a rough transition that our Mom and us had to weather.

Then of course we were married and learning the responsibility of raising families when the rough road suddenly came upon us again. My first little daughter had come of age and was married, such a wonderful happy time.

On the way to the gift opening a day later one of the twins was killed in an accident just short of the hall where the function was being held.

The sadness that caused had never really left us even after all this time. It’s hard to imagine the rough road ever

being that rough. Still life goes on and I’ve been lucky enough to have been blessed with twelve grandchildren that have all been so wonderfully healthy and smart and a joy for all our families.

Since then I’ve also been able to realize this gift of writing and I have also taken my music to many places and folks. I have enjoyed the whole experience. This was something I never even thought or dreamt of back in the days of toil on the farm.

It’s been a lot of gladness for a while now, and I hope I can hold on to see how I cope with the next rough spot. I know by now though, no matter what, it’s not something to fear and there is always something positive to be gained by getting through any kind of bad road.

Blood Supply

The idea of someone taking away a few vials of my blood evo ke s a n u n e a sy feeling in my solar plexis. What if the facility hasn’t followed proper protocol regarding sterilization? Even if the facility has appropriate guidelines in place, what about the attendant who approaches with a smile or a tired sigh and a sharp needle in hand? Word on the street whispers that lab techs are generally overworked and underpaid.

Past personal experience leaves some of us hesitant to subject ourselves willingly to a close encounter with a curt blood taker in a white coat and plastic gloves possessing no detectable affinity for people and possibly minimum skill at locating a viable vein for taking blood. Unless we face a health challenge ourselves, it’s easier to just avoid the entranceway door to the “Laboratory”.

If it’s not our crisis, then what crisis exists?

I can’t recall the last time I donated blood, but it wasn’t any time in this decade. Honestly, I don’t think about it much. Yet, I am aware that hospitals

depend upon an adequate blood supply in successfully conducting the daily order of business. Ever had surgery?

Blood. Know someone with a serious illness? Blood.

Blood is the elixir of life. You don’t need me to toss that profound bit of wisdom in your direction.

I asked a five people recently whether or not they knew their own blood type.

None of them did. I don’t know my own either. I think I have it written down somewhere but in this moment the location of that ‘somewhere’ eludes me so I have to include myself in the group that does not know. I do know, among other things, the password to six different email addresses, three financial accounts, the social insurance numbers of every member of my family, and the combination to my bicycle lock, but I do not know my own blood type.

That seems....wrong.

Canadian Blood Services will determine your blood type through a simple process that involves taking a few drops of blood from a finger and then mixing it with antisera. The result will determine your blood type. Blood “type” is comprised of blood group (A, B, O, AB) and the Rh factor (“positive” or “negative”). Investment of time required:

That means that supply on hand for use across the nation stands at about three days’ worth. The targeted reserve goal has been set at between five and eight days to ensure adequate supply is readily available to meet all requests made by health care facilities.

Life is busy. When we enjoy good health, we might not think so much about the significance of ensuring that a national blood supply is adequately stocked. Perhaps we ought to pause though, to shake of f the shiver of unease that rises when we think of giving up some of our blood unnecessarily. We have had perfect fall weather for har vesting this year minus one week of rain. It always feels good to be done combining. Now it is time to get ready for thanksgiving and do some fall decorating.

I am often reluctant to let go of summer, wanting to hang on to the last wave of heat. The beautiful colored leaves and a little sunshine, eventually wins me over to appreciate the crisp air. On the prairies our fall can be a very short season, so it is

best to enjoy it while we can.

Here are a few ideas for quick and easy fall and thanksgiving centerpiece to help celebrate the season. Using a clear glass hurricane type vase, fill the bottom with nuts such as hazelnuts and place an ivory or fall colored pillar candle. For more impact use a grouping of different heights of candles and clear vases. Another easy centerpiece is to use a clear glass vase and fill with water and crab apples. The crab apple will float to the top. You could add a few fall leaves, or small branches from the crab apple tree. It looks pretty lit up through the water with under water battery operated tea lights. If you don’t have clear glass vases, mason jars will

work for a rustic country look.

The inside of a medium sized pumpkin can be carved out and inserted with a vase that is filled with fall foliage or flowers. An apothecary jar or large clear glass vase can be filled with hazelnuts, pine cones and fall leaves for a lovely and natural centerpiece. To make this centerpiece look even grander add some willow branches for height, and light the inside of the vase with battery operated tea lights. A large clear glass vase can also be filled with gourds, mini pumpkins, with branches for rustic fall look. sprays in various colorations are perfect to fill a vase or floral container, and they can be reused year after year.

As I write this I am waiting for my pumpkin pies to finish baking, that I am taking to an early thanksgiving family celebration. A turkey dinner with pumpkin pie for desert is often part of the traditional thanksgiving celebration for so many families on the prairies. I love pumpkin pie, and I am truly puzzled by anyone who says they don’t like it. Living in the Canadian prairies we have so much to be thankful for. A thankful person is a happy person, and “a happy heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).

I imagine that almost all of you are back into the swing of the school year now and are working hard to set up a new school year routine. Good for you! I’d like to ask you to take a few minutes to think about your current study space. Sometimes the temptations and distractions that lurk in our homes can actually work against us when we are trying to learn and study productively. Where do you study? The kitchen table? Your bed? A designated office?The coffee table?Let’s take a few minutes and see if we can’t make your work space the most productive one for YOU! 1. Make sure you are comfortable.

Is your chair comfortable and does it promote good posture? Is your desk or table a good height for you? You will be spending a considerable amount oftime in this space and if you are not comfortable not only will you not be motivated to work in the space, you could actually cause aches and pains for yourself.

2. Clean up. Limit the amount of material on your desk to what you are currently working on to avoid distraction.

3. Have the study tools you need

handy. Keeping things like paper, highlighters, your laptop, markers, rulers, calculators etc. handy will stop you from needing to get up and search for them and getting distracted.

4. Regulate temperature. Generally speaking, working in a room that is a little cooler will help to keep you alert and focused but being either too hot or too cold can be distracting. Work out what is right for you.

5. Pay attention to the lighting. Make sure that the area is well light to relieve eye strain.

6. Claim your space. Trying to work in a common area with people and pets coming and going will not be as effective as a space that is your own.

If you have a separate , well equipped workspace in your bedroom that might work but if you find yourself tired and tempted by your bed, you might want to find another space to claim.

7. Determine what background noise

Let family members know that you are trying to focus and that you’d prefer not to be interrupted for a certain period of time.

Walk Of Remembrance

“When you died I died too and with the death of us both, it took me many years to come back to life and I have to work at it still,” Bryronie Wise once said.

A guest speaker at the Walk of Remembrance, Lorna Thomas, quoted these words, which sent chills up the spine.

Deputy Mayor of Vermilion, Carolyn McAuley and other local dignitaries were present at the Walk of Remembrance on September 6 at the Lloydmin-

ster Bud Miller Park.

This walk is held in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day to honor the life of loved ones who have suffered and died by suicide.

The committee who coordinated this event included powerful mentors from Men at Risk/Regional Suicide Prevention Council, Walking Through Grief Society, Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre, and Mental Health--Addictions.

Carnations were handed out to each person, than the walk began.

“The first few months after my son

died, another friend of mind asked me to go for walks with her. I have always found being in nature to be healing,” Thomas said.

Some of the people in attendance had survived suicide attempts while others were still suffering from the modern plague of depression.

Lorna Thomas also spoke to these people, “I have been to similar gatherings since my son died. What drew me to these events was the hope that I would find ...the comfort of community, the comfort found in talking about

the life of a loved one, the comfort of being in a beautiful place, the comfort that comes from hearing a story that may be similar to your own. Each of you has your own reason for being here, but I commend you for having the courage to show up--for yourself, for those you have come with, and for those whom you have lost.”

Refreshments, resources, and a supportive atmosphere brought such members of the audience hope, support and, hopefully, the desire to return to walk with them again next year.

Students Run, Golf, And Play Volleyball Susan Obrigewitch, Mannville School News Submitted

The Mannville School golf team is back from the ASAA Provincial golf championship in Cochrane. Although our results were not what we had h o p e d fo r, t h e t o u r n a m e n t wa s a fantastic experience for our team as none of these students have been to golf provincials before.

Kenzie Smith finished 11th in the i n d i v i d u a l g i r l ’s c o m p e t i t i o n a n d Ashley Lyster finished just outside the top 30. The golf weather was great on Monday but cold and a little rain on Tuesday. Even though the weather was poor, Eric MacNeill, Lucas Amero, and Dawson Konieczny all improved their scores from the first day.

The highlight of the trip came on their practice round on Sunday. It was extremely windy and a little cool but that did not stop Dawson Konieczny from getting his first hole in one at River Spirit Golf Club. Congratulations Dawson!! It was a 160 yard par 3 with a strong tailwind. Dawson teed up and landed about 2 yards short of the pin and then they all watched it roll into the cup. According to our staff supervising the golf, Zane Polishuk, it was an amazing sight.

Our grade eight to twelve students

in Cross Country finished off with a challenge in Lloydminster. Although none of the team members placed in the top three, they still improved their time from previous races. All team members had a great day and enjoyed more team bonding before the season end ed. Nex t week the senior team mates, Stephen Baker and Lucas Amero, will participate in Zones at Smokey Lake to see if they move forward into Provincials.

Mrs. Wagner would like to thank all junior and elementary team members for an excellent season of Cross Country and encourages them all to keep running throughout the winter!

The junior girls’ volleyball team were busy in September. They travelled to St. Jerome’s and participated in a game night, playing five games back to back. They hosted Innisfree for some games and went to Innisfree as well. The last weekend in September the girls travelled to St. Jerome’s to play in the “A” tournament. The girls placed first on the consolation side at the St. Jerome’s “A” Tournament.

The junior high volleyball boys’ team travelled to Irma to play and ended up winning t wo out of three sets. Ty Melnyk ser ved 10 straight points! Their next game will be at a tournament in Kitscoty.

Wood stoves and chimneys can often smoke because of draft problems. Draft problems are usually related to how the chimney is designed, if it is located primarily outside it is usually cold and provides no natural draft. When you open the door on the stove cold air begins to fall into the room through the chimney.

Many times your home is a better chimney then the chimney known as the stack effect and the smoke enters the house instead of the chimney. The best approach to overcome these problems are to open a window near the stove to try to equalize the inside and outside pressures to reduce the stack effect. Secondly you need to heat up the chimney somehow (torch, hairdryer etc.) to push out the cold air and get a draft started. Finally try building the fire upside down to create heat before smoke. (largest wood on bottom, then kindling then paper on top) The paper burns up creating heat to warm the chimney then the wood catches and hopefully the smoke begins to rise.

Well folks, that was Vermilion’s first Alberta Culture Days. Bravo to all who participated in any way, whether at a venue, as a volunteer, or as someone who went around to scout out the various venues.

The bar is set so high for next year that it will be a challenge for us to deliver!

Thank you to all the participating groups who gave so much to make these three days such a success. Thank you to VES and St Jerome’s for opening their doors, to the Berdines for square dancing and to Dallas Arcand Jr, for the hoop dancing.

Thank you to EastAlta Co-op, Vermilion Packers, Harp’s, and Tim Horton’s for donations towards our barbeque, pancake breakfast, and beef on a bun.

To all of you who have donated to the Vermilion Heritage Mural, thank you, and please know that we will work diligently to present Vermilion with the same quality in future murals. As a result of the Seniors’ Centre and the ABC Days committee working together, we now have this mural that Vermilion can enjoy and be proud of.

How can I say thank you enough to Heather MacMillan? Halfway through this process to host Alberta Culture Days, it became clear that Vermilion Allied Arts was not only the umbrella group for the grant application, but also the umbrella group that was at the helm to see everything through to completion. Heather came on board as co-chair and because of her we managed to successfully pull this off. We learned quickly to lean on each other’s strengths to make sure we had everything covered.

To Miss Ryan from Dance Impressions, thank you for thinking large and out of the box. You came up with the idea for the flash mob dance for the parade, took the time to get to so many schools to teach students the dance, and as Parade Marshall, successfully put it all together.

Thank you to all who participated in the parade, including MLA Dr. Starke, WWII veteran Elwood Hill, Junior Cadet Officer Jim Storch, and RCMP and Legion members. And hats off to you, Liam Laurence, for all your help with sound equipment!

Innovative Studio Elevates Yoga And Pilates To New Heights Karen Nedzielski Submitted

A new Yoga and Pilates studio in Vermilion is hoping to take residents health and overall well being to new heights.

Elevation recently opened its doors with an official grand opening where shoppers were given tours of the studio and store front by owner Tannis Henderson and her staff and family members.

Hendersen was born in Edmonton and also lived in Sylvan Lake for a few years where she started her family with the birth of her first daughter Taya. Henderson is a Red Deer College graduate with a diploma in Business with a major in Information Technology (IT). She later received her Bachelor of Management Degree while working full time for the Alberta Government. While working in the IT industry for more than ten years she then started her own consulting company four years ago following the birth of her second daughter, Nola.

Her Consulting business was based out of Edmonton but did work in the Vermilion area as well. The family said they decided to make the move to Vermilion two years ago, wanting to raise their daughters in a smaller community.

“We’ve found Vermilion to be very welcoming, and we love the thriving community within, and surrounding the town. The move has been an amazing, positive change for our whole family. I’m very blessed to have been surrounded by wonderful family and friends my whole life, and moving to Vermilion has expanded that circle even more,” says Henderson.

Henderson says her love for yoga has been both mentally and physically beneficial. Since moving to the area she says she noticed several instructors who taught within the town but did not have a dedicated space to hold their classes. At the time, Henderson says she was looking for a change in career path which would be more fulfilling and allow her to become more involved in her community.

Henderson noticed the older building while walking in Vermilion’s downtown and says she instantly fell in love with the character of the older brick building. She says is was a “perfect fit” for her plans for

a yoga studio and other complimenting elements she wanted to offer. Thus Elevation was born.

Henderson says the goal of Elevation is to make clients feel great, inside and out when they visit and create an atmosphere that makes people comfortable, happy and at home.

She says yoga helps to improve strength and flexibility, reduced stress, improved posture, and even reduced blood pressure.

In addition to yoga, the wellness centre offers massage, Reiki, hot rock massage and raindrop therapy, treatments that Henderson says help to heal your body and mind.

Elevation offers Yoga, Pilates, Fusion, and Zumba classes for ages three years and up with classes offered in the evenings, and three days during the week.

For the month of October, Elevation will be offering Fitness Fridays at a reduced rate for anyone with a student ID card as well as an introduction to power yoga class on October 25.

The store front offers a unique shopping experience not only offering the

traditional yoga and exercise clothing and health and beauty products, it also features the work of local and Canadian artisans’ jewellery, artwork and accessories.

Henderson says she is extremely passionate about supporting local as well as supporting environmentally and socially conscious companies.

“There’s immense hidden talent in Vermilion and Canada that I want to provide exposure to. Elevation offers me the opportunity to do that.”

Every six to eight weeks a new artist/ designer is featured and if the products do well in the store, they will become regular items.

In November Elevation will have wish lists for ladies to fill out in preparation for Christmas. The lists will then be sharing with boyfriends, husbands, and anyone else interested, on a men’s shopping night on December 12 held at the store.

Elevation is open Monday to Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as well as Fridays, Thursdays until 9 p.m., and Saturdays 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The studio space is also available for private bookings on Sundays.

Someone asked me, “Who is that great voice on the mic?” Well, it was Ryan’s dad, Al Kaziechko. With a voice like that, you should expect to get railroaded into the job!

The extra touch provided by all who participated in Hallway of the Arts was just icing on the proverbial cake. Expect more opportunities to display your wares!

Vermilion Chrysler Changed Hands Nicole Crossan Reporter

As of October 1, Wayne Stetson would like to inform the community that he sold his business to a new owner, Wes Campbell who also owns Campbell McClennan located in Killam, Alberta.

After many years as a successful dealer in Killam, Campbell said that he attributes his success to simply working together with communities and creating a positive work environment for employees. The byproduct of this strong philosophy is success for everybody. This philosophy will be implemented in the Vermilion Chrysler store.

Stetson has full confidence that the new owners will have the same business plan, same staff, and on par customer service to which Stetson has built up over the years.

Stetson’s objectives have been to provide no pressure business, excellence in customer service, opportunities to give back to the community, and a great work culture for his staff. He looked for someone who would carry on this vision before he sold his business.

Stetson has been a resident of Vermilion since 1984 and has been involved with Vermilion Chrysler since 1992. In 1998, Stetson and Philip Todd partnered in purchasing the Vermilion Chrysler dealership.

Stetson has no definite plans, but plans to spend more time with his family and continue to be involved with the community. He has always enjoyed supporting Vermilion and surrounding communities with such things as 4H and minor sports. In turn, Stetson appreciates Vermilion and the surrounding community for their support over the years.

Dennis Brown, the new General Manager of Vermilion Chrysler, brings with him over forty years of automotive experience. He will carry on the same consistent level of customer service as his predecessor.

“It is really important to me that we create a good work environment for our staff and support the community,” Brown explained.

Brown was involved with a Chrysler dealership in Whitecourt for seven and a half years previous to moving to Vermilion.

Apple Drugs Mural Nicole Crossan Reporter

The Browns hired Barry Overn to create the mural on the west wall of Apple Drugs.

“Bonita and I wanted to feature active living and use images that we believe distinctly

depict Vermilion,” says Craig. “The provincial park, fair and Lakeland College all say Vermilion pretty strongly.”

Colleen Symes said in her feature story in the Lakeland Link, “If the weather cooperates, Overn expects to complete the mural in October. He also painted the Vermilion Heritage Mural on the Vermilion Seniors

Centre.”

There will be four scenes on the side of the Apple Drugs building in Vermilion each depicting one of the four seasons. The murals are about two-thirds complete. The mural in shades of blue is the winter image.

It features two people cross country skiing in front of the Beckie Scott Nordic Centre.

The mural in shades of green is the spring image with a man and a woman jogging in the foreground and two people canoeing in the background. The panel in shades of red is the summer image with a chuck wagon.

The next panel will be an autumn image of Lakeland College’s Alumni Hall.

Crowds began to line the street near the Library, Town Office, CLASS, and Elks Hall at 3:30 p.m. September 28. Roofers were able to get a unique perspective of the event as they stood atop the roof of the Vermilion Library throughout the proceedings. Many of the audience members were trained to join in the parade like a flash mob as choreographed ahead of time by Ryan from Dance Impressions.

The parade began with the flag bearers and a group of people dressed up in their country’s beautiful traditional c lothing waving their flags. Dr. Starke was among them carrying a German flag.

The music was set up to ring out loud and clear throughout the parade route. Children, youth, and adults all danced to a catchy tune that reminded audiences that we are all one nation. We are all human beings, so we can put aside our differences and learn to accept each other’s customs, religions, and cultures. were performances by people who have moved to Canada from other areas of the world. Ishmael played the piano skillfully throughout the potluck. Two Jamaican women sang and danced Jamaican folk songs and their national anthem.

Two women from Mexico and the Philippines read their stories about coming to Canada. It was filled with wonder and awe for Canada, but also the fears and insecurities in moving to another country. Representations from other countries were Mexico, Jamaican, Guinea, Philippines, Ukraine, India, and Korea.

Innisfree Library Celebrates Nicole Crossan Reporter

“Partnerships enabled the ramp to be built,” Dr. Starke remarked before he cut the ribbon officially opening the new wheelchair ramp at the Innisfree Library.

Among the items mentioned by Dr. Starke was the showing of the film Cut Bank at the Edmonton Film Festival on September 26.

Cut Bank is a film that was partially filmed in Innisfree, Edmonton, and Montana. The Edmonton showing was well attended, Dr. Starke reported.

The Innisfree Library was once a school.

The floors have been restored and other parts of the building have been renovated recently. It is remarkable what has been done to preserve this building, which is of historical value to Innisfree.

An eclectic mix of artistic talent, which lined three rooms and a hallway, combined with a wine and cheese event to make for a tasteful night of cultural pleasure. Photographs, paintings, quilts, needlework handbags, and more delighted the audience that packed the hall at the Innisfree Library September 27.

People mingled in the hallway or sat at the tables tastefully decorated with fresh garden pumpkins, autumn leaves, and assorted types of table coverings. Wines from St. Paul, Edmonton and Strathmore, were selected for the wine-tasting event.

They made a beautiful rainbow of shades of reds, pinks, and yellows.

“You have breathed new life into this building,” Dr. Richard Starke said before he opened the new door that gave access to the new ramp on the side of the building.

Marwayne Fire And Rescue Activity Day Nicole Crossan Reporter

Marwayne Fire and Rescue hold an annual community event in lieu of Fire Prevention Week the first week of October. As usual, their fire trucks were shiny and sparkling October 4.

People mingled, went for rides, and learned more about what it is like to be

a volunteer firefighter. Residents not in attendance were alerted to the event as children went for rides on top of the pumper truck and listened to the sirens.

Visitors were taken for tours of the fire hall and were given the answers to many of their questions. Children and adults alike enjoyed having a target practice using a fire hose to hit the targets.

Some residents request the fire department to do a house inspection. Firefight-

ers alert them if they notice anything unsafe and check their smoke detectors.

Over this past year, bystanders have helped on the scene if the fire department was shorthanded and others have made donations to Marwayne Fire and Rescue. As a show of appreciation for the community’s support, visitors enjoyed a barbeque of hot dogs and hamburgers.

Association of North America deemed that the most appropriate commemoration was to d o ever y thing they could to educate and inform the public about the impor tance of fire safety and prevention. Fire Prevention Week was proclaimed in Canada in 1919 to commemorate the Chicago blaze, as well as a major fire that destroyed the Centre Block of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa on February 3, 1916.

This year Fire Prevention Week will

be celebrated and obser ved Octo ber 5 -11, 2014. The theme “ Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives – Test Yours Every Month” is most appropriate considering about 66% of home fire deaths occur in a home without a working smoke alarm.

I n ad d i t i o n to a wo r k i n g s m o ke alarm, you also need something that’s completely free – a home fire escape plan. I urge everyone to sit down with family members and talk about how

you will escape each room in your home if the smoke alarms sound. Then practice the escape plan. Identify two ways out of each room if possible and make sure you have a meeting place outside the home so that ever yone can be accounted for once outside.

Protect your family from fire: install working smoke alarms on every story of your home and practice a home fire escape plan with ever yone in your household.

A Day With Sensei Dave Woods Nicole Crossan Reporter

Sensei Dave Woods hosted a NorAlta Jiu Jitsu event at Lakeland Mall on September 27 to allow people the chance to try out this form of martial arts.

In the past, most adults and children have joined a form of martial arts after speaking with the Sensei about what the differences are between the various styles and when classes are being

offered, or after watching a demonstration as a member of an audience.

“Every style has something to offer,” Woods commented, “We’re not better than anyone else, we’re just different.”

The people who attended the workshop at the Mall were given the opportunity to learn how to fall, how to hold themselves in an appropriate fighting stance, blocks, footwork, kicks, take downs, and hold escapes.

Nor-Alta Jiu Jitsu offers a Japanese style based on street self-defence techniques while incorporating the limits of the Criminal Code of Canada and the self-defence laws stated therein. Their motto is: No Rules Only Results, which means that there is no sparring or tournaments.

Section 34 of the Criminal Code

states that people can only use as much force as is necessary to defend themselves against an attack or its continuation in an effort to preserve our safety and well-being. Once force is used, the attack stops.

“There is no pomp and circumstance,” Woods explained.

This style of martial arts is meant to educate in a fun, yet controlled and safe environment. There is a belt rank system from white belt all the way up to black belt. Woods follows a curriculum, which includes helping students learn how to articulate what has happened after an incident in a way a law officer will understand.

reasonable price. Jiu Jitsu students can choose to set aside one two hour class or two one hour classes each week at a time that matches the schedules of both the instructor and the students. There will be openings in December.

Some things many people may not know is that Woods, who has had 13-14 years of training in Karate and 20 years of Law Enforcement, also acts in plays at the VicJuba Theatre in Lloydminster.

On November 19-21, Woods will play Bernard’s best man Robert in a comedy play titled Don’t Dress For Dinner that has a plot line that “builds up to the point of ludicrous.”

Just Say Hi Campaign Dr. Richard Starke kicked off the Just Say Hi Campaign at the Mannville school on October 3 with the program running until the nineth. Pat Calyniuk explained, “Just Say Hi is a national campaign that attempts to connect our students with each other and with the larger community. It is based on one of the forty developmental assets-personnel connections-and is based on the premise that a connected community is a safer community. Understanding Your Camera Nicole Crossan Reporter

Kim Morritt, owner of Dragon Hare Studios located in Vermilion’s Lakeland Mall, taught an evening class on photography October 1.

She showed both good and poor examples of photos to explain such princ iples as flat and dimensional i m ag e s an d h ow to re c o g nize t h e differences between them. If these terms are understood and applied correctly, a photo of the same scene c an g o fro m b e in g d ull or d ar k to becoming a fabulous work of art.

Like most things in life, photography is best when the scene and circumstances are analyzed to find the middle ground before the photo is taken.

“Before you pick up your camera, examine the scene,” Morritt warned.

Where the exposure is measured from, for example, can mean the difference between a washed out scene and an award-winning shot.

“Use the rule of thirds grid,” Morritt explained as she showed a room full of participants how to find their grid on their cameras.

If you want to be a better photographer, you can attend one of Morritt’s classes offered through the Vermilion CLASS office.

Once you have attended, you will look at the photographs around you in a new way. Instead of wondering, “How did that photographer do that?”

Morrit t will have given you enough knowledge of photography to understand, appreciate, and utilize the techniques professional photographers use to get great photos.

The Merriam Webster dictionar y defines optimism as, “an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome”. Optimistic people and situations are a norm in Dewberry School, and this was evident during last week. From volleyball successes to cross country accomplishments and citizenship accolades, students were applauded for their achievements.

On September 27th, the senior girls’ volleyball team ventured into the jungle of competition at the Kitscoty tournament. Here they showed many colors: enthusiasm, confidence, positiveness and served and spiked their way to a gold finish. More importantly, they also displayed great leadership qualities! Way to go, girls!! They continued to exhibit these qualities as they hosted six teams in their home tournament October 3 & 4th.

The senior boys’ team came head to head with some fierce competition at the tournament in St. Paul. Teams from as far away as Fort McMurray, contended for placement. Our boys revealed their tough undercoat and bumped their way to a fifth place finish. Awesome performance, boys!

There was no lack of excitement when the buoyant junior girls’ volleyball team traveled to Marwayne for their first game.

Observing Animals Preparing For Winter

We had another wonderful St. J Day on Tuesday, September 30. In the morning we attend our first school mass and in the afternoon had our “Welcoming”. The gym was a sea of Red, White, and Black, our school colours as we all gathered in the gym. After the Student Council gather their pledge the welcoming began. First the grade four students were welcomed into their houses of Cartier, Fraser or Mackenzie. Then the new students from grade 5-12 were welcomed followed by the new staff members. A big thank you goes to Cain Collins, Dane Martin, Tenille Chase, and Breanne Wheat for organizing this fun and spirit-filled event.

M r s . M a u g h a n ’s k i n d e r g a r t e n students and Mrs. Moore’s grade 1 students were excited to board the bus for a flied trip to the Provincial Park. It was a beautiful day to explore the park and see the wonderful colours of fall.

The students participated in a Fall Scavenger Hunt looking for signs of Autumn.

on September 17. Out of 25 competitors in their 3km race, Marc Langawin placed first, and Sean Ulrich placed 16. On September 20 Anna Ulrich and Sean Ulrich raced tough competition at the Peace Hills meet in Wetaskiwin.

Anna placed fourth in a field of 27 Junior Girls competitors. Anna Ulrich, Kaylie Krys, Sean Ulrich, Marc Langawin and Jayce Sweeney raced in the Vermilion XC meet on Sept. 23. Anna Ulrich placed first for High School girls. Anna Ulrich, Kaylie Krys, Marc Langawin and Seth Mansfield raced in Lloydminster on Wednesday, October 1, where Anna placed first and Kaylie placed second.

The last weekend of September saw eight volleyball teams representing St. Jerome’s at a variety of tournaments.

All teams had very successfully weekends. Both the Sr. boys and girls were in St. Paul this weekend. The boy’s team played two very intense matches winning the semi-finals against Assumption from Cold Lake and just ending up short in the third set against Westwood out of Fort McMurray bringing home silver. The girls were defeated in the semi-finals against St. Paul winning bronze. The JV girls also won bronze in the Cold Lake Tournament. On Friday the grade 6 & 7 Boys and grade 7 Girls teams travelled to Mallaig and both won Gold and Championship T-shirts at this tournament. On Saturday the Jr. Boys team traveled to Chauvin. The boys

The Book Fair is coming to our library this week starting Wednesday, October 9. Students will be able to purchase books at noon hour on October 8 and 9. The Book Fair will continue after Thanksgiving from Tuesday, October 14 until Friday October 17th. Family Night will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 15th.

Creating Positive Connections

On Sept. 25, the VES grade six classes travelled to the Provincial Park to study the forest up close. This element of their Trees and Forests science unit was experienced under the guidance of Conservation Officer Gary Walsh. Mr. Walsh’s “tailgate talk” and the subsequent walking tour tied in beautifully with many of their unit’s key concepts. They now have a better understanding of some of the tree species that share their space, and of their relationship with them. They “tree”mendously appreciate Mr. Walsh’s time and knowledge.

What an amazing weekend during Culture Days. On Friday, our grade four classes were treated to a square dancing workshop led by Aubrey and Dennis Berdine. The students began learning the moves in a large circle and then used these in the traditional square formation.

All the classes had a great deal of fun learning this traditional form of dancing.

That same afternoon, Mrs. Pullyblank introduced us to Dallas Arcand, Jr., a hoop dancer who totally wowed us. To start with, Dallas played cedar flute and guitar, accompanied by his helper, Curt Young, who played drums and guitar.

They started the performance with an honor song. Halfway through their performance, Dallas started his hoop dancing, using a total of 13 hoops to make shapes of animals like eagles, bears, and snakes.

Curt’s group, Young Medicine, won the award for Best Blues Album of the Year at the Aboriginal People’s Music Choice Awards, and Dallas has performed in London and Calgary and is following in his dad’s (three time World Champion Hoop Dancer) footsteps in learning about hoop dancing. What a wonderful way to start the AB Culture Days in Vermilion.

Band In The Sand At Lakeland College Nicole Crossan Reporter

The competitive spirit did not plague this night of performances as vocalists and bands performed before the judges to find out which three artists would be chosen to open for Dallas Smith on October 25 at 8 p.m. at the Rodeo Barn.

After listening to the talented lineup of entrants on October 1, the three judges had a difficult time choosing who would be the three lucky winners.

“There was no first, second, or third prize,” Robin Gerard announced before she named the winners: Boomtown, Jessica Reitmeier, and Artificial Lip. Boomtown is a band from St. Paul made up of four members. They chose their name

Slow Start But No Quit For Marauders Under The Lights In Wainwright Cathy Wolters Reporter

There weren’t stars in their eyes, but the first six minutes of playing und er the lights in Wainwright’s Autumn Classic might have seemed if the Marauders were sleepwalking.

Take away 3 touchdowns in the first half of the first quarter, and the scoreboard wouldn’t have seem so tilted for the home Wainwright Commandos and their 49 points.

For the third straight game Vermilion managed 21 points, which is why with 17 seconds left in the game the Marauders didn’t quit, but battled from their own 45 to inside the Wainwright 35.

“We’re not taking a knee,” quarterback Colton Katuski yelled at the bench after he will-powered another 15 yards up field after limping into the huddle. He ended the game with 122 yards rushing and another 244 passing yards.

A dozen of those yards came next on

Brandon Maida’s fourth reception. The game ended with an incomplete pass just out of Maida’s reach. Maida, the captain’s game star, contributed on both sides of the ball with 78 receiving yards, led the team with 6 tackles and also had a pick early in the third quarter.

Wainwright ended the first quarter with 21 points. The Marauders had just three, from the foot of Donovan Yaceyko on a 15-yard field goal.

The Marauders first touchdown came late in the second quarter with a six-play drive highlighted by a 29-yard completion from Katuski to Maida bringing the ball to the Wainwright 26-yard line. .

After a less than two-yard pass to Yaceyko, the Marauders confused the defenders with a reverse and Yaceyko took the ball to the endz one with a minute left in the half.

The Marauders’ other touchdowns were thrilling long plays on successive possessions in the third quarter.

The first came as Katuski kept the ball, followed blocks from Jeremiah Ball and Brayden Chilibeck and sprinted through the

Encouraged by the TD, the defense forced Wainwright to a two and out punt.

Yaceyko field the kick on the first bounce and ended up on the Wainwright 35. But a penalty for blocking below the waist and unnecessary roughness by his teammates put the Marauders back on their own 15. However, on the first play Yaceyko again went for a long run. He caught the ball behind coverage around midfield and outran any pursuers for a 95-yard pass and run touchdown.

Yaceyko continued to do what he’s done all season by standing out as a workhorse on offence, defence and special teams. His two touchdowns came on 26 rushing yards and 119 receiving yards, one field goal, four tackles and the only Marauder sack on the evening. His punts and kick offs were consistently long and he returned punts and kickoffs. He took a shot to his left knee on a punt return late in the final quarter and finished the game on the sidelines.

Marauder Donovan Yaceyko (#33) crossed the goal line for a 26-yard rushing touchdown and also took a shot to the head from Commando Hunter Lawson (#8). Yaceyko also had a 95-yard pass and run touchdown.

The Commandos were prepared for Chilibeck’s ground game and limited his six touches to negative yardage. However, he did catch five passes for 64 yards.

Points after: Marauder parents did leave Wainwright with wins. Joey Myshak claimed the 50/50 and Cindy Hutchinson was second in the kick to win during half time with a 20 plus yard kick…Marauder coaches singled out Katuski as the offensive star, who did go over 50% in pass attempts at 11 for 20, and lineman Pierre Brousseau, who had four tackles, on defense…Honorable mentions to Jacob Clampitt for best game of the season and Noah Sanson who had a nine-yard reception and three tackles…Also with three tackles were Carter Usenick, Scott Zielinski and Tristen Gagne…Colten Convey and Axel Myshak both suffered injuries. Convey sat out the second half after getting hit in the head. Myshak was helped off the field late in the game, first by two nearby Commandos and then his own teammates, after reinjuring his knee. He had just returned to the lineup after sitting out for two games.

Vermilion’s Junior B Tigers were a good match for the Frog Lake team.

The game seemed to go by quickly as the players switched on and off and the penalties kept both penalty boxes equally occupied.

One spectator commented saying there wasn’t enough teamwork going on, “The teams don’t seem to be passing very well. Most of the goals have been flukes.”

Tigers were ahead until the Frog Lake got the tying goal at the end of the second period. The game was tied four all. The Tigers worked hard to get another goal, but the odds were not in

As the puck slipped back and forth from player to player across the ice rink, the Tigers were unable to even the score. The Tigers’ goalie made a great save with five minutes left in the third period, which was followed by the goal that caused the Tigers to begin to lose hope, followed by a strong urge to persevere.

The Tigers went into hyper drive in

their efforts to tie the game up again.

Suddenly they were passing like pros, but all their plans were hampered when the goalie was caught outside of the net in the last 25 seconds of the game and the puck slipped into the net with a shot made near the centre line.

The goalie was too far away from the net to save it. The game ended with a score of 4 to 6 for the Frog Lake team.

vermilion Golf club holds He Man tournament The He Man Tournament which signals the wind up for the mens division for another year took place on Saturday October 4 at the Vermilion Golf Club.

20 teams with three men per team showed up to participate in this final 18 hole match.

The tournament was divided into three divisions with the top three in each team receiving cash prizes. The results of the tournament are as follows: A Division: Sean Whelan 1st place, Chris Myshak 2nd place and Larry Pare 3rd place B Division: Mike Donkin 1st place, Tim Deroo 2nd place and Murray Lysons 3rd place C Divison: Bryon Wolters 1st place and Doug Hoffman 2nd place.

The course will be closed as of October 13, however the club is planning projects to be held over the winter, if you are interested in volunteering please contact the clubhouse or any board member.
