Alberta Safe Riders Free Safety Program Alberta Safe Riders Submitted

The Alberta Snowmobile Association (ASA) is a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 1971. The association is made up of clubs that actively work to improve snowmobiling in the province.

With a generous financial contribution from the Government of Alberta and Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) safe riding, the ASA has developed the Safe Riders program, free to schools and community groups.

The Alberta Snowmobile Association’s “Ride with Respect ” free Safe R i d e r s p r o g r a m d r i ve s h o m e t h e message to ride with respect for yourself, your machine, for others, and for the land.

These machines are power ful and give us the freedom to access places and activities that we might not normally get to experience, but we need to acknowledge that with great power comes great responsibility.

The program is also designed to show how careless and inexperienced use of off-road vehicles can increase the c han c e of d isr upting families, communities and eco-systems.

The Safe Riders program objective is to help students enjoy the colorful and interactive program and hope that the youth taking part will make the connection that respectful riding is the best way to ensure many more years of off-highway vehicle fun.

The pro gram invo lves in - s c ho o l 60 to 90 minute interactive presentations tailored to the schools’ scheduling needs, and is part of the curriculum for K-3, grades 4-6 and 7-12. The program can be easily modified to suit any audience age and size.

Please book early, since the 2014-15 budget can fund only 50 rural Alberta schools. First come, first served!

Safe Riders will be presenting in Dewberry School on November 25 to 80 students: K - 12. The presentation to grades K-4 will take place from12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Grades 5-12 will attend presentations from 1:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Below are some rules to keep riders and the environment safe.

- We ar a p r o p er l y f i t te d h e l m et approved for motorized use.

- Wear proper clothing and safety gear.

-Bring emergency supplies and First Aid kit.

-Buckle up when riding on a UTV or Side by Side!

-Younger riders want to make sure they have appropriate adult supervision.

-Make sure the machine is the right size for you.

-Use proper hand signals and riding positions.

-Take avalanche safety courses to prevent accidents in the mountains.

- K n o w w h e r e i t ’s s a fe t o c r o s s moving water.

-Stick to authorized trails and areas where off-roading is permitted.

-Don’t be a litter bug!

-Avoid spooking livestock and wild-

l i fe yo u e n c o u nter a n d ke e p yo ur distance.

-Avoid slushy ice, ice on or near moving water, ice that has thawed and refrozen, layered or “rotten” ice. Ice must be at least 12 cm to support a snowmobile or ATV. -When night riding make sure that your lights work properly, stay in familiar areas, stay on established trails, carr y flares /flashlights, never ride alone, pull of f trail if you stop and always let someone know where you are going.

-When riding in public areas obey the Off-Highway Vehicle Act and the bylaws lo c al to your area . Always carry valid insurance and registration for your OHV. There is still ro o m for b o ok ing s on October 24 in the morning and afternoon, as well as October 25 in the morning.

Across the province a number of deaths and hundreds of injuries are directly related to non use of seat belts. A large percentage of these

deaths and injuries are preventable by simply buckling up. Police officers see it time and time again where individuals involved in seemingly minor collisions end up losing their lives or sustaining major injuries because he or she were thrown about the cab of the vehicle or ejected from the vehicle because they were not using their seat belt and or were using the seat belt improperly.

Please do not wait until you see a police officer to decide to wear your seat belt, make it a habit to buckle up before you put your vehicle in drive.

What more can be said about the Alberta Culture Days celebrations?

Dazzling, awesome, brilliant ... . This reporter is exhausted, and humbled by the display of love and commitment that Vermilion has shown for the arts.

The story of Vermilion is one of daring, dedication, determination and superb organization.

On arrival, I was met by cheerful volunteers serving hot food on tables laid out with salads, drinks and a variety of homemade cakes, while the band “Detour” crooned mellow songs, and guests swayed to the music.

Then came short, humorous speeches, and a beautifully decorated cake. To me, this was the highlight of the weekend because it represented everything the Allied Arts Council and the community have been working for: “A legacy to Alberta Culture Days, 2014” as Keri Pullyblank of the Vermilion Allied Arts Council put it.

Outside in the cold breeze, Ed Storch taught the craft of knife-making, helped

friends to solve problems, and shared some of his secrets.

Indoors at the Heritage Museum, a large crowd inspected the vast collection of pioneer lore, and discussed Vermilion history while children sat in antique wooden desks.

What can a newcomer to Vermilion think about all this? Self respect comes to mind. Love for the arts, pride in the craft.

It was fascinating.

Artists, craftsmen like the knife maker and women such as, rug hookers, quilters and wool spinners, dancers, potters, photographers, archers and Cadets all took the time to show their craft, to share their knowledge, and to encourage others.

This is an invaluable gift.

In times like these when it seems the day has not enough hours, the commitment, dedication and determination of the Vermilion community leaves me speechless.

At the Vermilion Voice we have done our best to cover all of the Alberta Culture Days events, however, since the paper has to go to bed early on Sunday, some events will be covered in our next issue.

Vermilion does not forget those who made it possible: Alberta Culture, the Allied Arts Council, the arts groups, volunteers, and the entire Vermilion community have done an outstanding job.

I think that the “Thank you(s)” will continue for a long time.

Well Repair Nears Completion Nicole Crossan Reporter

After receiving a tip that the cleanup was under way, Voice staff visited the site of the leaking oil well on the Brennan subdivision. The reporter was welcomed and treated with respect and hospitality by Pat Payne and two other Orphan Well Association staff members. The Manager, Payne, took the time to explain the process, show the site and even helped with a good location for photos.

“Vermilion is full of very nice people. I am so glad residents are being so nice and cooperative,” In return, Orphan Well is doing everything they can to both ensure the process is completed in a timely manner, completed carefully, so they won’t have to return to fix what was missed the first time, and to monitor and reduce noise disturbances.

In some locations, people have blamed Orphan Well Association for the discomfort of having to relocate and listen to the noises made during the cleanup process.

To them, Payne responded, “I didn’t build the houses there.” But she has done her best to ensure the problem was dealt with.

The noise made by the equipment can be equated to the sound of a dump truck passing by. There is a bit of rattling and

a steady, low hum, but that is dwarfed by the sound of the train when it passes by on the tracks near this same subdivision.

Employees at Orphan Well monitor the noise levels and adjust them as needed.

Some of the questions people are asking include: what is happening, how does it impact residents, what has Orphan Wells done to reduce this impact, and what are the plans for the future on this site?

To answer these questions, Payne told a bit of the history of the site.

In the past, oil and gas wells were commonly drilled in rural areas; however, with the sale of farm land to urban communities, some areas are now under urban residential developments. This has happened as a result of community expansion and population growth in Alberta (see www.capp.ca.)

However, if a problem were to develop beneath one of these wells, public safety could be in jeopardy. As a result, in November 2012, the Alberta Government improved the regulations on abandoned oil and gas well sites by requiring developers to conduct tests before new subdivisions and developments can be approved for construction. In addition, all residential zones that were built on top of abandoned oil and gas wells before this regulation was put into effect were required to be tested

by July 2013. These conditions have been met.

Out of the thousands of abandoned sites The Orphan Well Association has tested, only a few sites have problems that need to be addressed. The well in the Brennan subdivision in Vermilion is one of these.

If these sites need to be cleaned up, usually the oil and gas companies that drilled the wells are responsible for the cleanup. However, some of these companies are no longer in business (defunct).

As a result, as a special favor for Alberta’s Energy Resources Conservation Board, the Orphan Well Association has been contracted to manage the cleanup process.

The residents of the Brennan subdivision and the Orphan Well manager have the same goal: to get this cleaned up as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Lease preparation and well equipment setup took two days September 11-12.

Then the coil tubing unit operations took two days. The fourth step is planned to be completed by September 29. However, if the debris used as filler proves to be more difficult to move out of the abandoned oil

Yes folks, summer is officially over and autumn is here, which came to us on September 22 with mild temperatures and sunshine. The colours out there make it even more evident.

Although I love spring, the colours of fall are a sight to behold, with bright golds, orange, reds, and greens all mixed into some spectacular portraits of fall.

I sat silently in a tree stand last evening taking in all that evident fall colour, sights and sounds; the vocal flocks of geese were the only sounds of the still evening.

Well, there was one more familiar sound, and that was in fact very annoying: the sound of mosquitoes buzzing in my ear, actually more now than I have heard or encountered in September.

It seemed the many bugs of our summer were making a final vigil last evening and at sunset, as annoying as they were, a pesky mosquito buzzing in an ear may be more enduring than Jack Frost stinging an ear.

But summer still has signs of lingering: Some things in nature were late this year,

Around The Campfire so hopefully summer will be also—there are still many species of hawks not ready to move southward yet.

The raptors, or birds of prey, were very plentiful this year, I observed about half a dozen different hawks, several eagles and ospreys, and a few sightings of a bird that fascinates me … the Turkey Vulture.

It’s good to see them still with us this late.

One hawk I specifically enjoyed watching in September was the Peregrine Falcon also historically known as the duck hawk.

This small raptor is a bullet, reaching incredible speeds of over 322 km/h (200 mph) with a confirmed measured speed

by National Geographic at an unconceivable 389 km/h or 242 mph on its high speed dive.

The Peregrine Falcon, as with most raptors, was decimated to the point of being on the endangered list due to the use of DDT, a common pesticide which was banned in the early 1970s.

Since the early 1970s, Alberta with other wildlife agencies and non-governmental organizations such as the Canadian Wildlife Service began a Peregrine Falcon captive breeding program in Wainwright Alberta.

After a great success with the numbers, the Falcon farm was closed, and I believe the falcons I saw are descendants of this

program. We saw over a dozen, with even four or five in one area.

They were good to see, and sitting in a tree stand they helped pass the time along with my curiosity and admiration of these raptor birds, whose moves would make any veteran air force pilot envious.

One move—and I swear— there was a Peregrine minding its own business on the highest tree near my stand, and a raven sat in same tree just under it squawking loudly!

The Peregrine finally grew tired of the noise, flew off gracefully with the raven still squawking, and I am not sure if it was on purpose or just a coincidence, but it flew up right behind it.

That didn’t last long because the peregrine, in the most incredible aeronautics I have ever seen, did a perfect 360 degree loop de loop with a 360 roll at the bottom end, and just hammered the raven from behind.

Both birds dropped and disappeared as one into the treetops in a plum of black feathers. Minutes later as I stared in disbelief, the peregrine flew up and joined its mate. The raven did not.

It’s amazing what one can see strapped to a tree high above. Speaking of late summer, just this past weekend I had a doe appear under my stand, followed by twin

fawns.

A second doe appeared, again followed by two young fawns. The thing that amazed me was twofold: it was good to see two sets of twins after several very harsh winters.

With hard winters, most times we get to see only one fawn per doe, if any.

The second fact made me say “wow!”

Both sets of twins were completely covered by their newborn camouflage, spring spots still.

Also interestingly, only seconds behind the deer one, then two, then a third coyote following in the deer’s footsteps appeared as a pack. I didn’t wait to see what happened next, and foiled any ill plans the coyotes had for the fawns.

Every morning on foot, or in the evening when I’m in a stand, it is an adventure. Still, there are a lot of nice fall days left for adventures and a long weekend favoured by us, turkey addicts.

So get out there and enjoy…I sure am! when the smoke clears I would rather be sitting on a pumpkin amongst fall golden leaves, being thankful for what I have … than pushing a shopping cart through Walmart buying things I don’t need!!!

With the c oming of t h at f ir s t h e av y frost in the fall, the memories of past autumns come along with it, together with scenes of stooks standing in a field, with bundle racks, and threshing machines spouting straw from the blower.

All of us older folks that pitched bundles and sweated on those warm days or squirmed down into the load on the cold, windy days to stay warm will remember. Yes, there were both kinds of days as I remember.

In my mind’s eye, those scenes are as vivid as any colour TV If you ever had to handle a green team or any other for that matter on the side of the threshing machine where the blower belt and drive belt was flapping away I’m sure you’d have vivid memories too!!

Seemed like the heavier the sheaves were, the more the weather or anything else you put up with affected your disposition.

I can’t ever remember when those wonderful meals tasted better or that coffee and biscuits with pin cherry jelly was more joyfully appreciated.

I tell you what. You young fellas that ride in air-conditioned cab harvesters will never know how wonderful it felt to just rest a minute and taste a treat like that was then.

I’d love to feel the way I felt back then, so able and strong to do that work that really tested your every ability to handle that team, build that nice neat load and feed that hungr y old machine to its capacity and keep it up

for a long day. Well, from dark to dark anyway.

Thank God they never had lights like the combines do now.

I remember those damn old kerosene lit barns and watering my team in the dark and in some places even having to pump water by hand after pitching bundles all day. Seemed like the straw that caved in the camel. I started all that activity when I was just 13 years old and I still remember how tired I was and how sore my hands got.

Yes, a lot of memories of hard work and the camaraderie that went with it. There was an order of things that either endeared you or ran of f the stragglers. You had to hold up your end as they say!!

Fall also reminds me of the time I came to take flying lessons and learn the joy of flying. We’d had an early frost that fall that severely damaged my crop and I very nearly passed up the opportunity because of the loss, but I took the gamble and won!

So the fall colours of the countr y bring back all those memories of fitting in the lessons with the job of taking off my crop and getting my bales up and the cattle settled for the winter. The richness it added to my life made it all worthwhile.

In the years that I was able to fly my own plane, it was so wonderful to feel the real freedom of being airborne and able to go anywhere, or almost anywhere and never have to open a gate or follow any track.

I guess fall is harvest time and the crop you get and how much satisfaction life rewards is like a farmer working his land. Yes, there are forces that take away joy and goodness from your life, like the forces that limit your

I guess the memories are our harvest life that we can say are safely stored where they hopefully will stay with us to the end.

I’m cer tainly for tunate that I can write some of those memories down, so they can be recorded as history of our old times.

It was such a satisfying feeling to see your bins sealed up, filled with grain, nice stacks of feed standing all secure and ready to winter your herd of cows and have a nice pen of calves all weaned and settled. I look back over my life and feel I’ve contributed some and gained a lot of satisfaction from my adventures and wonder how on earth any of us survived all those hard work times. It’s sure nice to sit and talk with the old timers and brag about how tough we were and how we stood the toil back then. Who said B.S. was dead?

As a deer hunter in Alberta, you play an important role in the province’s chronic wasting disease (CWD) surveillance program.

The government requires CWD testing on all deer harvested within Wildlife Management Units (WMUs): 102, 116, 118, 119, 124, 144, 148, 150, 151, 152, 160, 162, 163, 164, 200, 202, 203, 204, 230, 232, 234, 236, 238, 254, 256, 258, 500, 728, and 730. It is mandatory to submit deer heads harvested in these areas.

As in 2013, four voluntary units are identified: 138, 142, 156, and 166.

What Do We Know

The question emailed to me was: What do you know about ‘Constructive Thinking’? I paused, then began my response. Constructive connotes building, emergence, positives. And thinking? Well, I know what thinking is... doesn’t everybody?

That’s when I stopped. Sometimes we ‘construct’ a response to a question before giving much ‘thought’ to how we know what we think we know. While I remembered coming across the phrase somewhere long ago, I could recall nothing of the context. Instead of basing my response on knowledge, I relied on inference. I felt because I knew the meaning of the two words, ‘constructive’ and ‘thinking’, I could compose a reasonably sound answer to the question. In other words, I was ‘winging it’.

Not such a good idea when the person asking the question happened to be a college student asking for my

help. I deleted the answer I’d started and invested some time in order to verify what I thought I knew. When I later recomposed my response, I felt confident that the answer would prove more helpful than my subjective opinion. It had merit.

We constantly exchange information. Some information is trivial and some is substantive. A lot of information we share with others is based on opinion, assumption, belief, and gossip, not actual knowledge. Yet all of it has an impact of some kind. Our intake and processing of information affects how we perceive the world as well as how we conduct ourselves within it.

One day while out walking, I met a man who lives in my neighbourhood but whom I don’t know personally. As is often the case between people walking with dogs, we shared a brief conversation. Then my new acquaintance asked for my indulgence. Concerning what? I asked. He disclosed a rumour he’d heard about my family----actually quite a banal one----and completely false. Strangely, the apparent originator

of this ‘news’ was a person with whom I’ve never spoken. We shared a good laugh, then my new acquaintance and I agreed that he would start a new, much more interesting ‘story’. I haven’t heard anything further about it yet.

In this vast world we all inhabit, there is little excuse for not making the effort to find out what is true and what is not, if we value truth. A conversation comprised solely of opinions might be entertaining, but not particularly satisfying or enlightening. That’s because nothing ever moves forward. For that to occur, we have to shift into the realm where the information we exchange has some basis in actual knowledge.

Whereas anyone can express an opinion based in assumption or idle gossip---what we think we know----the acquisition of knowledge requires work.

Free speech is a valuable privilege enshrined in our Constitution.

When exercising this privilege though, we assume responsibilit y for what we say. People might believe us and then what? Ezra Levant, a Sun Media columnist, recently misled readers by

falsifying details of an event involving Liberal Party leader, Justin Trudeau.

For reasons known only to Mr. Levant, his published copy included insults to Trudeau’s parents. It’s unclear to almost everyone what he hoped to achieve but it could not have been respect or credibility.

Constructive Thinking is enhanced when we disconnect ourselves from what we think we know and strive to base our communications on what we actually do know. It’s what remains when we discard the gossip, the preconceived notions, the opinions based upon emotion, prejudice, or hearsay.

It’s what occurs when we welcome new, verifiable information and real possibilities. For people in pursuit of meaningful information, there’s limited space for vacuous opinion or rumour. Just reality based facts. And the exciting anticipation of learning to change our minds about any subject when valid, reliable information is presented to us for consideration.

Flapper pie is a vintage desert that we can claim as a uniquely Alberta and Saskatchewan regional dish. Because it uses such basic ingredients to produce a truly elegant dessert, it was a popular offering in cafes and homes all across the prairies. In those days almost everything cooked was made from scratch. The greatest benefit of cooking from scratch is the absence of food additives and preservatives. Flapper pie began appearing in the early 1900’s and continued as a favorite until the 1970’s. The introduction of little boxes of Jello pie filling into the supermarkets, changing food trends and many women entering the work force caused the shift away from home cooked custard pies.

This recipe is a variation that is basically a chocolate meringue pie. If you omit the chocolate and reduce the sugar to 1/3 cup, you will have the recipe for the original famous flapper pie, which I will warn you, once you try, you will be hooked on this prairie treasure. As you know chocolate is heart healthy. If you find this pie a bit sweet, reduce the sugar by 1 tablespoon. chocolate Flapper Pie Crust 1 cup graham wafer crumbs ¼ cup melted butter 1 tablespoon sugar (white or brown) Melt the butter and then stir in the remaining ingredients. Reserve 2 tablespoons of this mixture. Press into a 9 inch pie plate. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Filling 2 cups milk 2 tablespoons cornstarch plus 1 teaspoon cornstarch 3 egg yolks 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder 1 tablespoon butter (optional) Combine all the ingredients except the butter into a heavy bottomed pot. Cook on medium low heat, stirring with a whisk until thickened. Stir in the butter and then pour into the prepared pie crust.

Meringue 3 egg whites 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar (optional) Combine the ingredients and beat with an electric beater until the eggs form soft peaks. For successful meringue be sure that there is absolutely no egg yolk in the egg white mixture. It is also useful to know that the egg white will whip up better at room temperature. Top the filling with the meringue. Sprinkle on the reserved graham crumb mixture and bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes until lightly browned. Allow the pie to fully cool before slicing, or it will be too runny to slice well.

According to the Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research, sportrelated injur y is the leading cause of emergency depar tment visits in A l b e r t a a m o n g t e e n s a g e d 15 -19 years.

Concussion is a common spor t related injury that often occurs during hockey, football, skiing and snowboarding.

A concussion is a brain injury that occurs when the brain suddenly shifts inside the skull and knocks against the skull’s surface. It may be caused by a direct or indirect hit to the head or body.

Af ter s u f fer i n g a c o n c u s s i o n, a person may experience many different symptoms. These could include, headache, ringing in the ears, nausea and/

or vomiting, disorientation, emotional and personality changes, dizziness, poor balance and /or coordination, poor concentration, light sensitivity, irritability, fatigue and sleep complications.

In or d er to re d u c e t he r i s k of a concussion, encourage your teen to look first when engaging in a risk y activity, such as hockey. Preparation, good sportsmanship and fair play all help to reduce the risk of injury, including concussion.

Teens should also wear the gear, such as a helmet that fits correctly and is secured on the head throughout the sport. Always replace your child’s helmet after impact or as instructed by the manufacturer. In high impact sports such as hockey, teens should wear a face and mouth guard.

To manage a concussion, encourage your teen to seek help from a

coach, teacher or parent immediately after an injury has occurred. Consult a physician immediately after being notified of an injury in order to determine if a concussion has occurred.

Football Still Fun In Marauders Latest Loss Cathy Wolters Reporter

Neither rain nor wind could take the fun out of football last Friday as the Marauders hosted the tier 1 St. Paul Lions in a Wheatland exhibition match.

While the final score favored the Lions, 48-21, the game’s tone was one that coaches on both sides said made them wish they were out there playing themselves.

For the Marauders, the fun started when Donovan Yaceyko took a punt from midfield to pay dirt with 2:25 gone in the first quarter. Then he turned a low snap into a two-point convert and 8-0 lead for the home team.

Six plays after the kick off the Lions responded with Madison Brousseau doing the majority of work in the drive, including a 55 yard run, and the final 3 for the touchdown before kicking the

The Lions edged closer before the quar ter— and the rain — ended, but still trailed 15-14 at quarter time. They added two more touchdowns in the second quarter and had a 28-15 half time lead.

They’d score again early in the final quarter running their total to 48 points.

Those three played crucial roles in a fired up defense penetrating the Lion backfield to force a punt that resulted in the Marauders’ final score.

Marauder Brayden Chilibeck played a similar role in the Marauders’ next possession as he slipped through the line at his own 42 and scrambled to inside the St. Paul 10 on the first play af ter the kickof f and scored on the second play. Yaceyko’s conver t put the Marauders up 15-7 with 5:49 to go in the first quarter.

However, those would be the last

final quarter, still figured prominently in the scoring drive. He star ted by fielding the St. Paul punt and bringing the ball to inside the Lion 45. Chilibeck and Tyson Pashulka tag teamed to bring the ball to the St. Paul 25. Just after the three minute warning, Chilibeck would take the ball to the house, but have his 25-yard score called back on an illegal block.

Chilibeck early on the next two plays leaving the Marauders third and nine on the 25. The Marauders set up for the field goal at tempt, but instead K at u s k i g r a b b e d t h e s n a p, fo u n d daylight and dragged a few Lion tacklers before being stopped just short of the goal line. Maida tried the keeper for the score, but it was Chilibeck who got the six points on the next play.

The exhibition spirit ex tended to naming the game stars with St. Paul making the Marauder picks and the Vermilion coaches recognizing the Lion standouts. Lion coach John Lumby’s picks weren’t surprising given that Chilibeck, Yaceyko and Car ter Usenik have consistently been singled out over the season.

Usenik got special mention as a “ toug h k i d ” af ter b eing “ naile d by our animal”. Both Usenik and Clinton Labine went down after their collision on the second half kick off. Usenik had the second most Marauder tackles with 5.5. Yaceyko led the Marauders with 12, galloped for 46 yards on faked

punts, did all the Marauder kicking as well as returning kickoffs and punts.

Another Donovan, St. Paul’s versatile Campeau, was named their first star. Their quarterback, Patrick Dion, and linebacker Corey Wozniak were second and third stars respectively as announced by Lorne Maier, Vermilion’s head coach.

Points after: … Chilibeck, currently second in league rushing, accumulated over 100 yards rushing with a total of 128 … Pushulka carried for 20 yards, his best total of the season ... Gage Myshak and Tanner Throndson both caught passes, the only two Marauder completions … Usenik had the best open field tackle of the afternoon late in the first half, then was the recipient of one of other memorable tackles to start the second half…The Marauders will play under the lights in Wainwr ig ht nex t Fr i d ay in t heir first return to Commando field in four years. Game time is 6 pm. Their final home game is Oct 9 against the Athabasca Pacers.

First launched in October 2009, the Aviva Community Fund asked Canadians to submit their ideas and vote on the competition’s online portal – AvivaCommunityFund.org.

Canadians proposed over 2,000 ideas and cast more than two million votes in support of causes from every province and territory.

In the end, eight winners were selected and the Aviva Community Fund’s $500,000 pledge was put to work on building a kitchen at a youth centre in Moose Jaw, building a lodge at a camp for chronically ill kids in Prince Edward Island and many other projects.

Building on Canadians’ overwhelming response, Aviva Canada has doubled its pledge by offering $1 million to lead, empower and support community initiatives across the country. Whether it’s a project for at-risk youth, or other ways of helping

people in need, the Fund enables Canadians to become actively involved in making change happen.

Rolanda Beaudette, Paulette Moir and Charlene Young were the amazing women who put in a tremendous amount of hours of their time to make this evening possible. Thank you also to all the parents for the donation of food, and for working to prepare food. Thank you to all of our students who helped peel and cut potatoes, turnips and lettuce and for helping to set up the hall, help during the meal and clean up. Thank you to staff for their donations and all their help during the supper. A huge thank you to all the community members who bought tickets to the supper supporting St. Jerome’s School. St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Supper Elina Castro Reporter

St. Jerome’s School Annual Fall Supper at the Vermilion Regional Centre on September 25 was sold out. The fundraiser will go a long way to support student activities, extra-curricular activities, sports, leadership, and after school programs.

The event is sold out every year, according to Principal Allan Chase who was manning the ticket table with son, Kaiden.

“We have received a number of orders for takeout because there are people in the field working on the harvest” said Chase.

“We estimate the number of guests at 750.”

In two settings, the guests enjoyed a multi-course meal supplied mostly by the school’s parents and friends. The kitchen and tables were well attended by staff and volunteers. The menu included roast beef with gravy, corn, turnips and potatoes, a Caesar salad, and a cabbage casserole.

The desserts tables were something to behold: pumpkin pie, lemon pie, chocolate cake and a variety of dishes to choose from, made for a mouth-watering experience.

Master of ceremonies, Vice Principal Allan MacMillan and the guests said Grace; thanked the Lord for “this vast abundance,” and the meal began.

Kandice Wilson and Cathy Allen, Chair and Co-Chair of the Parents Council sold tickets for a 50/50 draw. Funds raised will go towards building of a new playground.

“Playgrounds are expensive,” said Wilson.

“This is the first year we have had a draw during the supper, and ticket sales are going very well.” The winner of the draw will

receive half of the monies raised. The other half goes to a new playground.

VES News Karen King Submitted

Our ATA PD Day was on September 19, with VES teachers in JR Robson and the support staff in Wainwright. Both groups started the day with a keynote speaker (the teachers listened to Danny Brassell, who was excellent) and then we broke out into two sessions, each for an hour and a half in length. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn new things while getting a chance to network with staff from other schools.

On September 22, the teachers in VES met to go over test results from standardized tests, including DIBELS, Star Reading, PAT, and CAT IV tests. The results of the tests were analysed and then teachers used that data to help them plan their instruction to meet student needs. Throughout the year, teachers will continue to monitor student progress to assist in their teaching.

The Jaguar cross country running team was at it again this week. The team was determined to continue to hold their top 6

standings and personal goals. They practiced hard and managed to hit their goals.

We are very proud of their accomplishments and their winning attitudes. They will run their final race of the season in Lloydminster this week.

The Terry Fox National School Run Day was on September 24. VES students and staff were all part of the Marathon of Hope, as we each donated at least a toonie. We walked in period 4 to help raise money and awareness for cancer research.

The next three assemblies in October, November, and December will be on the third Wednesday of the month. After Christmas, we will go back to the third Tuesday of the month. This is to ensure that each of our kindergarten classes gets to come to the assemblies.

This year our library will host two Scholastic Book Fairs: October 14-20 and April 14-20. Profits from these book fairs will go toward adding new books to our collection and providing author visits and writing residencies.

This year we are very excited to host Susanna Pankiw (Dewberry teacher) and David Poulsen for author visits in October,

“Art Attack” At FOCUS Elina Castro Reporter

The technique used for this colourful work was simple. Just blow the paint through a straw and see how it goes.

The “Art Attack” display at FOCUS on September 26 as part of Alberta Culture Days, was a testament to the individual spirit. “Everyone can be creative,” said Jessica Myroniuk, “and we wanted the chance to showcase that to the community.”

The artwork was produced by FOCUS individuals and staff, utilizing easy techniques such as balloon paint, dropping, spinning, and blowing paint, as well as making collages and random crafts.

Balloon painting involves filling balloons and throwing the paint at the canvas which is usually on the floor, then lifting the canvas off the ground, and letting it drip. There is another fun technique involving dropping the paint on paper or canvas, then holding it by the edge and spinning the work. “Art

“Our Cadets take 3 field trips per year,” said Tisha Giese, a civilian Instructor with the Core while she showed the MRE (meals ready to eat) which include a full breakfast complete with hot cocoa. “We are going to Lac La Biche next week.”

The Cadets prepare well for their field trips. On their February field trip they will learn winter survival skills, and they will camp in -20 C which requires two sleeping bags and an air mattress. Among other skills, Cadets learn mapping and the use of the compass. Their equipment, uniform and boots are supplied by the Core. Currently, there are 20 Cadets ages 12 to 18.

There are 13 residents of Vermilion in Myroniuk’s program, with 19 individuals in total.

seniors In Film Albert Tovell, born in Vermilion in 1922, was one of five seniors selected to participate in the making of the DVD film “Tales from our Past” as part of Alberta Culture Days.

At age 92, Tovell is a tall, lean man who still goes to the farm often, and keeps an eye on his son and grandson.

Tovell played seniors slo-pitch and loves watching baseball.

He is fan of the Calgary Stampeders, and likes curling and football.

Jim Zadorozny was the cameraman and editor of the film. He was in media services at Lakeland College for 37 years and is now retired. The DVDs for “Tales from our Past” will be released around the end of October and will be distributed to school libraries, the Heritage Museum library and to the Vermilion Public Library. An announcement will be made when the release date approaches.

FOCUS Barbeque Fundraiser Elina Castro Reporter

FOCUS opened the Alberta Culture Days c e l e br at i o n s w i t h a s iz zlin g barbeque at the Elks Hall. The venue was changed due to the weather. However, the four “Honourable Chefs,” Heather Todd, Karen Baker, Chelsea Baker and Shelly Chomlack valiantly cooked tasty burgers and hotdogs outside in the parking lot, never mind the cold and the rain.

The fundraiser was in support of the FOCUS Snoezelen rooms.

Guests enjoyed a variety of meats, salads and refreshments.

VIBE Coaches Crystal Jackson and Shawna Craig kept the youngsters looking colourful with face painting; and DJ Shannon Leonard and The Laurence Boys entertained.

Knife Making with ed storch Ed Storch is a true master of his craft. On September 27, from a little corner behind the Heritage Museum, the master craftsman taught the basics of knife grinding and forge welding to a rapt audience that continuously renewed itself. Storch displayed his production line, up to the finished product.

And what a fine finish they had. There was a gleam in the polish and sleekness to the shapes of each knife. And to think that they began as dull, shapeless pieces of metal.

Quilts and Blackout Poetry A dazzling collection of craft and colour adorned the Vermilion Public Library on September 26. The exquisitely crafted quilts included: (left) Marvella by Sue Klym and Baltimore revisited by Fay Yaceyko.

The Library held a Black Out Poetry display as well. Black Out Poetry, it is a form of art which uses a piece of newsprint or a page from a magazine, which is partially blacked out with a marker. Dogs Meet obstacle course The Lakeland College Dog Agility Club usually practises on Sundays, but September 27 was a special treat for both the dogs and their owners. Batik art with cindi Plant “Batik means that you are using wax as a resistant,” Cindi Plant explained. She is offering two adult classes on November 8 and 15 from 9-4 p.m. at the Airport Museum. Vermilion Pottery Guild Nicole Crossan Reporter

Vermilion was actually named after the clay that was found here because it was vermilion coloured. Some of this Vermilion clay is still being used to make pottery.

Families and individuals had a great time learning more about pottery at the Airport Museum on Saturday.

“This really gives people a feel for whether or not they would want to join the various clubs around Vermilion,” one person commented on ABC Days in general.

This was a first time working with clay for many of the people streaming into the basement of the Airport Museum throughout the day on Saturday. Sandy was one of the members who taught newcomers how to create quick clay projects out of pre-rolled flat slabs of clay.

One mother commented, “This is awesome mother daughter time.” Families were able to work together on their projects and one ten year old boy, Oakley Bardoel, was even given the opportunity to teach his mother and other newcomers as they came in.

Elliott Atkinson rolled out a beautiful design on her clay.

Oakley helped his mother, Mary Bardoel, learn how to start her clay craft then helped other newcomers as they arrived.

“Thank you. We appreciate your effort. dancing down into little steps until the children at the Vermilion Elementary School and St. Jerome’s had learned how to face their partners – allemande left, do sa do, promenade, circle left and right, bow, and where to find their ‘corner,’ which means the girl should be to your left.

“Square dancing is done all over the world. You can have a lot of fun and meet many people,” Dennis explained to the group of children in the class.

Aubrey and Dennis Berdine have been dancing for over thirty years. They lived in Vermilion for over 42 years and moved to

Lloydminster three years ago, where they reside today. They have performed all over the region, in other parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and in Mesa, Arizona.

After teaching the workshops at VES and St. Jerome’s schools in Vermilion, they headed to Red Deer for a weekend square dancing workshop.

Dallas Arcand Jr. Hoops Nicole Crossan Reporter

Dallas Arcand Jr. and Kurt Young visited VES and St. Jerome’s as one of the presentations opening Vermilion’s Alberta Culture Days on September 26.

Dallas Arcand Jr. is the son of a three time world champion Hoop Dancer. He performed in over 300 shows by the time he was ten years old. He even performed at the London Olympics with his father. Their first song was called ‘Follower,’ a mixture of traditional and contemporary style music.

“Sometimes we are living in two worlds.

We are living our physical life and we are living our social media lives ... so we want to make sure we are spending more time in our physical lives than our social media lives.”

Kurt Young, who accompanied Dallas Arcand Jr. to Vermilion and used to travel with Arcand’s father, won three gold medals, two silver medals, and a bronze for Canada

at the World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, California.

The flute music mixed with the heartbeat of the drum brought the audience to a wilderness filled with friendly, wondrous animal life, eagles whistling overhead, and forests of green. The message to ‘be yourself’ because you are who you were made to be, came through loud and clear. This was followed by a song full of heartache for friends and family members who had made poor decisions related to gang activities.

During the setup, Kurt Young pleased the crowd with his seasoned stage techniques.

At one point, he used the pedal to turn his voice up to the level of a chipmunk and quickly back down again. Soon Dallas Arcand Jr. was ready to birds and globes seemingly effortlessly. begin his hula hoop show, which was a Hoops that were spread in a circle on the hit. The crowd ‘oohed’ and ‘ahhed’ as they floor suddenly appeared and reappeared watched hula hoops form into shapes of like magic.

He danced with his father at the London Olympics and has travelled North America teaching people about the Aboriginal culture.

The Alumni Hall at Lakeland College was festooned with works of art on September 27. Quilts hung from the balconies, photography and paintings were laid out along the hall, and the Ukrainian Cultural Association displayed traditional crafts.

In the theatre, the Vermilion Senior C h o ir, t h e H i g h l a n d D a n c er s , t h e Ukrainian Dance Association, Dance Impressions, Vermilion Dance, and poetry, music and theatre performers entertained a full house.

Lillian de Jong (back) and Basia Bosgra showcased colourful easter eggs and other crafts. “Our traditions have been brought to Canada, and through the Association we keep the culture alive,” said de Jong.

Beef on a Bun and Detour Band On September 27, the band “Detour” entertained with mellow music. Carmela McDonald, Rob Baron, Dennis Gerik, Barry Sherwood and Tim Donily kept the crowd warm during the Beef on a Bun event at the Seniors Centre.

The roast beef on a bun was hot and comforting, and the cakes, made by seniors, were delicious. The event was well attended, cold weather notwithstanding.

D edication of The Heritage Mural Mistress of Ceremonies, Keri Pullyblank, of the Allied Arts Council remembered the moment when Vermilion received the funding for Alberta Culture Days.

Pullyblank thanked the arts groups, the business community and the volunteers for coming together and for producing a superb weekend of celebrations.

She expressed a sincere thanks to Fay Yaceyko whose idea it was to place the names of those who donated to the Heritage Mural on plaques along the wall of the Seniors Centre. Tom Kibblewhite, President of the Seniors Centre, welcomed and thanked the grandsons and granddaughters of pioneers. MP Leon Benoit commended the Vermilion community for supporting the arts which enrich our lives. MLA Richard Starke had a very enjoyable day, and remarked that the monies raised for the Heritage Mural were monies very well spent.

Terry Fox School Day Walk

Vermilion students at J.R. Robson and Vermilion Elementary School walked with a purpose on September 24. This was the annual Terry Fox School Day Walk and the streets were jammed with young people doing their bit to find a cure.

At Vermilion the Elementary School, students watched a film about Terry Fox before their walk began.

At J.R. Robson students met in the

gymnasium at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Hart talked to them about Terry Fox’s life and asked if anyone had been affected by cancer.

Nearly everyone in the gymnasium stood up.

By 11:45 a.m. the students began their walk for Terry Fox and others who have been affected by cancer. Students were rewarded with sundaes after the walk.

Terry Fox was an extraordinary youth who ran for 5,373 km (3,339 miles), from St John’s, Newfoundland to Thunder Bay, Ontario. For 143 days, no matter the high

winds and cold weather, this remarkable amputee continued on his quest and changed people’s attitude towards the disabled. Terry Fox proved that while cancer had claimed his leg, his spirit was unbreakable.

What began as a dream to raise $1 million to help find a cure, has garnered worldwide support. To date, The Terry Fox Foundation has raised $650 million for cancer research. Terry Fox lost his leg to cancer when he was 18. At age 22 he died of bone cancer.

The 2 kilometre cross-country meet, hosted by J.R. Robson School on September 23 was off to a roaring start.

With approximately 275 grade 4-12 students from 17 schools in the region, the Vermilion Provincial Park was bursting with energy.

The Voice caught up with J.R. Robson’s Assistant Principal, Darren Grosky, at the

J. R.’s major fundraiser, the annual magazine sales event, has kicked off!

An assembly on Tuesday, September 30 encourages students to sell magazine subscriptions to family, friends, and community members, with prices at a surprisingly low cost. A significant por tion of sales returns to the school to fund events, activities, and equipment.

Last week our junior Marauders ran in the BTPS finals including Ashley Jones, Kailey Geall, Dylan Eremko, Sam Ree, Bray Crowe, and Logan Garnier in grade 7; Anastasia McCullough, Brenden Lupul, Wyatt Payne, and Jonathan Pries in grade 8; and Logan Stepanick in grade 9.

David Poulsen will be visiting J.R. Robson on October 6. In the past he was a rodeo competitor, rodeo clown, rock singer, high school football coach, stage and film actor, documentary television writer and host, college English instructor, and a Writer-in-Residence at Lakeland College in Vermilion. His full length play, “The Glory Boys”, was produced as the inaugural production in the college’s new theatre in 1988.

Junior golfers Cody Jackson, Ken Jackson, Gage Myshak, and Quentin Rehmann swung over to Wain wright to compete in the BTPS zones on September 23. Graeson Rogers in grade 11 competed at the senior level on September 16 on Vermilion’s greens.

Aligned with Alberta Cultural Days, Miss Ryan of Impressions by Ryan taught an 80-minute interactive and cultural dance routine in the school gymnasium on September 24. Over half of our school population—grade 7 to 9—picked up the moves and energy that she delivered.

Vermilion Seniors’ Centre News

Each Spring is a new season to regenerate the past, but Fall is the accumulation of all the hard work that has taken place since Spring. Fall brings the last of the flowers, and the fruit of the harvest. A time when one can sit back and say, “Well Done”.

Often there are a few hitches along the way such as late spring snows, hail storms, wind storms, lack of rain, etc. etc., but, in the Fall when dinner tables are enjoying the gardening efforts and the crops are in the bin, it all seems worthwhile.

Many seniors are still farming and enjoying all that nature has to bring. Even though farming is time consuming, time is still taken out to socialize and assist in the betterment of the community.

On September 8th, the birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated with coffee

and cake at the Seniors’ Centre. This whole week was a busy one, with the Executive Meeting being held on the 9th the potluck supper on the 10th, and crib doubles on the 11th.

The potluck supper had a turnout of 56 members; the food was varied and delicious. The Allan Sisters entertained. These ladies are always enjoyed as they sing and play familiar old time melodies.

During the evening, draws were made for the tickets donated from the Allied Arts.

All members’ names were entered in a basket for the draws. The following people were the lucky recipients, October - Morley Marshall, November-Hilda Bell, JanuarySylvia Boothman, February-Albert Tovell, and March-Ostap Woyewitka. The next potluck supper is scheduled for October 15th.

The Seniors Crib Doubles was held on September 11th. The socializing and card playing was enjoyed by all who attended.

Such services in Red Deer and Central Alberta include telephone support, one-on-one and family consultations, information packages, maintaining regular support group facilitators across Central Alberta and hosting meetings, a resource library, presentations, workshops, and forums in conjunction with community health partners.”

The dinner was prepared by the ladies from the Seniors’ Centre. This activity of preparing and assisting in the preparation was an opportunity to socialize as well as provide a much needed service. To many, there is a great satisfaction when they’ve successfully provided the meal to their friends and acquaintances, especially when thoughtful people take the time to personally thank them.

Donations of fresh garden vegetables and desserts were appreciated. The winner of the 50/50 draw was Steva McFee who generously donated $50 of her winnings back to the Seniors’ Centre. Thank you, Steva. The winners of the crib doubles were as follows: lst-Pauline Herzog and Mary Wilson, 2nd -Jean Morrison and Elsie Quickstad, 3rd-Julian Kerekanich and Mildred Rokas. TIPS TO KEEPING YOUR HOME HEALTHY AND SAFE:

Q: I HAVE AN OLDER FIREPLACE THAT IS VERY DRAFTY. I RARELY USE IT BUT I LIKE TO HAVE A FIRE DURING THE HOLIDAYS. CAN YOU SUGGEST SOME APPROACHES TO REDUCING THE DRAFTS?

A:

It depends upon where the drafts are coming from but in most cases the cold is coming down the chimney. There is a draft control on the front of the fireplace that opens and closes a flap in the chimney. Make sure this door is closed. If there is a lot of cold air even with the draft closed then you may want to push some insulation up into the pipe to stop the wind from blowing around the draft door.

Here is how I would do this. First of all put some insulation in a garbage bag so the insulation is roughly a little larger than the chimney pipe. Next push this up into the chimney so it cuts off the draft. Make sure the plastic bag is hanging into the firebox where anyone trying to light a fire will see it. Pin a note on the bag stating that it must be removed before starting a fire. If the draft is still there you likely have an uninsulated chase. This is a problem you may want to call me about as it is a bit complicated to describe. Finally check to see if there is a fresh air vent outside that can be blocked. Once again place a label in the firebox to notify everyone that the fresh air is blocked.

Taste Experience Susanna Pankiw, Dewberry School Submitted

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” – Eleanor Roosevelt Life is a sum total of all our experiences and it is what we decide to do with them that define us. The teachers at Dewberry School experienced Danny Brassell’s words of wisdom at their local ATA professional development day on September 19th they came away with an eagerness to get the students more involved and engaged. They also were reminded of an invaluable lesson that everyone could relate to, “fail faster succeed sooner.”

Failure should be looked at as an experience rather than a road block.

Our students have had the chance to turn their “experiences” into successes in many ways this week in various activities. The cross country team showed determination and a lot of dedication at the Autumn Challenge in Vermilion. Most runners celebrated personal bests by improving their times by two and even three minutes. That is amazing progress!!

The following students received ribbons: Gr. 5 (girls) Laramie Parr 4th, (boys) Coleson Soloy 1st, Brenton Romanchuk 5th, Gr. 9 (boys) Tyler Manchen 3rd, Gr. 10 (boys) Keagan Rewuski 1st. Junior high also competed, two days later, in Mannville for the BTPSJH Cross Country Meet, Tyler Manchen ran a fantastic race, placing 7th in the grade 9 boys category!

Volleyball teams traveled to tournaments and games around the area.

Junior Boys played some great ball against Marwayne. Not only did they win this match up but many of the senior team members were mentoring their newer teammates. Way to show team spirit!!

Junior girls have been practicing and are preparing for their first tournament next week. Senior boys, a Dewberry/ Marwayne team traveled to Vegreville where they made it to the finals. Senior girls competed against some top teams in the tournament at St. Jerome’s, September 19-20.

Golf season is short but a few students attempted to improve their skills on the courses in Mannville and Wainwright these last two weeks. Weather and competition were hot but they persevered completing the rounds and gaining some useful skills in the process. Way to go, Keagan Rewuski, Ryan Parr, Kyle Kjenner and Donovan Brooker!

Mannville School Has Spirit

Mannville School has spirit! Staff and students participated in an eventful morning, celebrating a new school year. Students gathered in the gymnasium to participate in a whole school art activity that will be displayed as a mural to remind us that we have school spirit! The students also participated in a Flash Mob which will be continued throughout the year.

The 2013-2014 Mannville School Yearbooks have arrived! If you are interested in purchasing one, they are available at the office for $25.00. Costs are supplemented by the QSP Magazine Fundraiser.

It is time again for the QSP Magazine Fundraiser. Information will be going home with all students in grades four to eleven.

New this year, are digital subscriptions which can be read on iPad/iPhone and Android. Read anywhere/anytime! You receive the activation instructions via your email.

It was a great day for golf at the BTJHAA golf tournament in Wainwright; the weather was warm and the wind was low. When all of the golfers came in, our team placed 5th out of 11 teams, and only 3 shots out of 4th place. Thanks to Sam Rutt, Max Amero, Zach Polishuk and Shayne Heward for representing us.

Our Cross Country Running Club will be going to participate in the Lloydminster Challenge Run on Wednesday, October 1st.

We have begun our season with ten eager players on our junior boy’s volleyball team: Cole Demas, Tyler Melnyk, Kayle Tod, Quinn Harder, Max Amero, Zach Polishuk, Sam Rutt, Glenn Storch, Diego Tinoco and Shawn Heward. The senior boys volleyball team also began the season with only six players and so we called up grade nine boys to work with the senior team. Our team roster consists of Stephen Baker, Austin Trach, Lane Demas, Lucas Amero, Branden Nguyen, Eric MacNeill, Sam Rutt, Glenn Storch, Diego Tinoco and Shawn Heward. They are in the process of

On September 23rd the grade 4 and 5 classes attended ATCO’s Energy Education Mobile interactive presentation at the school. A big bright ATCO Energy Education Mobile grabbed the students’ interest when it was sitting outside the school.

Students were fortunate enough to get to check out what was inside. Inside were four different learning stations. It was very interactive and a unique learning experience.

School fee invoices have been sent home with all the students.

A Day With ... Greg Haslehurst Nicole Crossan Reporter

Greg Haslehurst teaches Grade 4 and the Roots of Empathy program at Vermilion Elementary School. He was selected to participate in the Buffalo Trails Public School (BTPS) inquiry project recently.

He described this project, “Students are coming to understand and create their own knowledge of the world through purposeful study. Knowledge is created through the processes of people working together, solving problems, making discoveries, and testing the validity of their new ideas.”

When asked what the best part of his career is, Haslehurst replied, “The best part about teaching is witnessing the moment when learning clicks.”

Greg Haslehurst also has an admirable goal that keeps him passionate about teaching, “I enjoy helping my students develop academically, socially, and into effective lifelong learners.”

Greg Haslehurst continues to work on finding a balance among a career, a social life, volunteer activities, and family life.

“My wife, Carmen and I are very proud of our daughters Crimson and Sierra. The responsibilities of being a teacher aren’t over when students leave the school. I am thankful that my family understands the extra time I spend helping others achieve success. I do make sure to schedule in family time to be active together,” Haslehurst commented.

Greg Haslehurst understands overcoming learning and personal challenges. As a child, he was extremely shy and worked hard to overcome speech and learning difficulties at school. Haslehurst believes “a strong community is built when people are involved.”

He is involved in several community activities and volunteers regularly with organizations and projects.

He teaches Raptor Taekwondo which stresses individual self discipline and personal growth.

His Greg Haslehurst Photography business is based around enjoying and sharing your unique personality, message and memories with others. His photographs have been featured in articles, calendars, promotions, and newspapers locally and provincially.

Something you may not know about Mr. Haslehurst is that he taught all three of his cats to play fetch. “They didn’t allow dogs in the apartment so I taught my three cats to fetch different objects so I could play with all

of them at the same time, and they wouldn’t fight over the toys.”

If he could switch jobs for a day, Greg Haslehurst would like to try Archeology. “I think being an Archeologist would be exciting.”

Help Find A Cure For Diabetes Elina Castro Reporter

Tammy Wood is dedicated to finding a cure for Diabetes. She is holding a fundraising event at the Clandonald Hall on October 25.

The event is dedicated to MaryAnne Kiziak, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes before she turned 3 years old. Kiziak has been through many struggles, living with diabetes for 65 years, and has shown her family and friends how strong she is. Kiziak ’s struggles have motivated Wood to help find a cure.

Wood will be challenging herself fur ther on Januar y 18, 2015 with a 21.1 km marathon in Bermuda to raise funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

“This challenge is minor compared to the daily struggles of children and adults living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes,” Wood wrote in a letter to family and friends.

The Bermuda marathon is in memor y of Wood’s nephew, Mitchell McCrystal who passed away from

diabetes at age 18. The marathon will also be dedicated to MaryAnne Kiziak who has been a motivating force in Wood’s life.

Another way to help is by encouraging Wood to keep running, even when she is in pain; participate in this or any marathon to help find a cure, or ask for a picture of Wood reaching the finish line.

Vermilion Play Development Field Trip An enjoyable field trip to the Paw Prints Pet Shop on September 23 enabled the children to learn about the different animals and about how to take care of them. This is one of many field trips that Vermilion Play Development organizes.

Vermilion Play Development is a not for profit society run by a volunteer board of directors.

Lakeland Supper In The Field

“ It ’s a long standing tradition on farms and at agricultural operations across Canada, but at Lake land College, it’s the first of its kind,” Jody Cmoc explained. The first annual Student Managed Farm (SMF) supper in the field took place on September 23. “ Fo r f i r s t-ye a r s t u d e n t s , i t ’s a n introduction to the student har vest managed by the second-year students.

For second year students, it’s a celebration of teamwork and a successful harvest,” Cmoc, Student Managed Farm (SMF) Public Relations Manager continued.

“Thirty-two second-year Crop Techn o l o g y s t u d e n t s , 11 fe m a l e s a n d 21 males from O ntario, M anito ba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, research, har vest, market and manage 1,200 acres of land near Lakeland’s Vermilion campus.” “ The first annual SMF supper in the field was an opportunity to bring together students and faculty to celeb r ate a s u c c e s s f u l h ar ve s t ,” s a i d Josie Van Lent, Dean of Agricultural Sciences at Lakeland, “While students combined in the fields surrounding our c am pus, we c ame tog ether to share a good meal and invited first year students to get a glimpse of the production and teamwork.”

“Students are given hands-on experience running and managing an agribusiness and experiencing real-life trials and tribulations.”

As part of the managing process, students are divided up into teams: production, finance, operations, research, and marketing. Each team has a manager and team members.

As an example of their duties, a group of four people on the marketing team, Jody Cmoc, Cassidy Schotte, Katelyn Field, and Erin Durie organized the Supper in the Field Event, while the production team harvested the standing wheat, and the research team conducted the Richardson wheat trials. They examined grains of wheat and separated one labeled section of the wheat field from the other.

“This is an icebreaker to create a familiarit y with first year students.

They have to take over our roles next year. Here they get to mingle and see how it’s done,” Erin Durie explained.

SMF Manager Nathan Glassford said, “Among the crops we planted this year are soybeans and faba beans, which are somewhat unique to the area. Snow caused some challenges with our barley, but it’s part of the true farming experience for our team.”
