lakeland college students harvest Lakeland College Crop Technology students, Nolan Blair and Garrett Raasok, began the wheat harvest on September 16. The second-year students are part of the crop team of the Student Managed Farm program. The peas and barley harvest has been completed. The crop team is working on wheat with Fababeans and Canola to follow. Approximately 50 percent is finished.

Mattress Dominoes At Lakeland College

On September 17 more than 60 first-year students set their mattresses on the pristine lawn of the College, lined them up, and fell forward like dominoes. This activity, known as Mattress Dominoes is a tradition at the

College and encourages the new arrivals to meet and have fun together.

Residence Life Facilitator Judy Eyben and Resident Assistants organize this event every year.

In 2013 for instance, the Domino Mattress event was held concurrently in the two campuses – Vermilion and Lloydmin-

ster. But it was not possible this year, since the weather refused to cooperate.

The Domino Mattress event is not only for fun. In residence, students have what is called Dorm Wars. To win, they must earn points. Dorm Wars include all residence activities. To earn points, students must sign up when they attend an activity.

The main reason students want the points is that, if they attend 10 activities – 5 each semester – they become eligible in a lottery draw for a coveted Delta.

The Deltas are four-room townhouses with two baths in which students only share with three other people. But there are only 100 beds in the Deltas, therefore the College holds the lottery draw to see who gets to live there.

There are several ways to win a bed in a Delta townhouse, and the talent show is one option. During the show, the lottery draw happens between acts. When a group of four students picks a key, if the key fits in a door, the group gets to live in a townhouse.

Students apply as a group and every member must have attended the required number of Dorm Wars.

There are many activities within the Dorm Wars program such as: a beach party; talks and meetings about issues like responsible alcohol use and sexual assault; family dinners; and movies.

“I found the secret to living a long life,” Brassell began as he showed a slide show of photos made hilarious by his commentary.

America’s Leading Reading Ambassador, Danny Brassell visited JR Robson School for the Local 31 Alberta Teacher’s Association (ATA) Professional Development (PD) day extravaganza.

Chris Tucker, the newly elected president to this zone of the ATA, introduced the day with a promise to deliver more mean-

ingful professional development opportunities for ATA staff and charged teachers with the responsibility of continuing to grow in order to provide excellent services to their students.

“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life,” Brassell said, quoting Confucius. “I want you to leave here strong enough to tackle any challenge.”

Danny Brassell lives in California with his wife and three children. He became a teacher after watching the film, “Stand and Deliver.” Today, Brassell is a motivational speaker.

To give his colleagues an idea of what Danny Brassell’s schedule is like this week, the speaker explained that Brassell traveled from Singapore to Hong Kong to Phoenix. Then he was at JR Robson School in Vermilion on September 19, followed by a trip to Los Angeles on September 20. He flew over 30,000 miles last week to help organizations and businesses with leadership and communication skills development.”

“You are always a teacher and a role model,” Brassell reminded a room full of teachers from Buffalo Trails Public Schools and East Central Catholic Schools.

This was a great opportunity for students to gather information and inquiry at a variety of secondary education institutions from across Western Canada. The students found the morning very informative.

Early Tuesday morning the grade 10 students packed onto the yellow school bus to head out to their retreat at Camp Encounter. The sun shone down brightly with great warmth as the students worked as teams to complete the challenging obstacle rope course.

Canoeing and an intense game of “Capture the Flag” was enjoyed by all.

They sang silly songs, made up skits around the campfire, and took time to write letters to their “Future Self ” about goals they hope to accomplish, friendships they hope to develop and how their relationship with God will grow over the next two years when they are in grade 12. The 2-day retreat gave them time to bond as a class and to create a full spectrum of memories.

Competitive Sports And Personal Development

The season has begun, and young people in Vermilion and neighbouring c ommunities are competing in a vast array of sporting events.

It is most rewarding to see how youngsters grow and develop as they carry on early in the morning, evenings and weekends, accompanied by doting parents and supported by friends and neighbours.

I see remarkable community support for young people and knowing how the young are constantly being bombarded

with advertising about products which are not always best for them, it is reassuring to see that competition acts like an antidote: it keeps young people fit and healthy.

Take the martial arts, for instance. The training, discipline and practice involved plus, the character building that each student goes through to reach the highest level, are pillars of personal development.

In fact, martial arts students have said that the arts have changed their lives.

There is the issue of leadership as well.

People have commented that sports got them out of their shells when they were young, and reduced their shyness and insecurity.

When participating in team sports, there are situations to resolve, relationships to build and stressful moments that must be managed well to keep the team going.

In the past few weeks I have been attending sporting events and have noticed how some teams perform better than others. I can’t think that a team’s success is based only on the running, kicking, jumping or skating skills of its players but in team spirit as well.

Team spirit, I believe, is about leadership and relationships. It seems to me

that the active ingredients in team spirit are: unity, understanding of the game and of each other, and practice—lots of practice.

Competition brings everyone into the fray: players, coaches, parents and friends and it can also show the worst in us but, judging by what I have seen, it brings the best of us into the court or the field or the ice.

There is so much tension, so much life and excitement at the games. It does fill my spirit and it certainly accounts for the healthy, happy youth I see all over town.

Vermilion is rich for its young people.

Very rich indeed.

Correction

There was a mistake in last week’s article about Amber Bauer. Bonnie Bauer has informed us that Amber’s sister is still in the midst of the adoption process.

In last week’s issue, our Editor printed a cutline for a photo that stated Nathan James lived with his mother in Vermilion. Nathan James does live in Vermilion with his father and his mother does not live in Vermilion. Originally an edited cutline was supposed to be published stating said information, but there was a mix up with the folders.

Well Folks, I’mmm back. My adventures were great and many.

All the preparation and hustle bustle before the Bowhunting opening was worth the wait and very successful.

I should be all relaxed and well rested, but the opposite is true. It’s going to take weeks to recover, sun burnt, wind burnt, soaked and frozen, walked over 150 Km in every weather one can get, it was awesome.

Opening morning was a shock to the system, usually we choose our ground blind or tree stand, get set up well before light, and wait until daylight for the ghosts to slowly appear out of an eerie morning fog.

The ghosts, meaning the elk, silently appear seemingly out of nowhere through a foggy mist. Well, that wasn’t the case this year. Being the first day, I certainly wasn’t ready for any of it.

In the near pitch blackness of 4:00 a.m., as I stumbled towards my stand, elk started running by me at the speed of “holy crap”.

I ran towards my blind and dove for cover fearing I’d be trampled as they passed me on all sides.

Now totally unready, and first day in the blind, the grass and weeds were waist high and I had to pull it out just to find a spot to sit, so there I was, frantically pulling weeds as elk crashed by.

The elk kept coming by the dozen before there was light enough to see them, and they wouldn’t leave! I swear they were circling the blind on purpose. I kind of felt like Custer on his last stand.

As legal light came, it didn’t slow down.

I prepared my blind while trying to keep an eye on the elk. The weeds incidentally

turned out to be thistle, thorn bush, and stinging nettle.

Although I had light gloves on, the thorns burned my hands.

I wiped the sweat off my face, which most likely came from fear more than from the walking or the work. It was not a great idea.

The stinging nettle, which I didn’t see in the dark, that was impregnated in my gloves, so now my face burned and itched beyond words, but I still kept an eye on the elk. I had very shoot-able bulls within mere yards/metres of me.

In that first five minutes of legal light, of opening day, I had 5-6 bulls extremely close. However, since I didn’t get one of the 12 hunting draws I put in for, I could take my time and be a little picky on taking a bull elk.

The biggest bull, a smaller 5x4 antlered bull, also wouldn’t leave my blind. I was surrounded on all sides, and he presented me with the opportunity a half dozen times, but I decided to pass.

We had four bow hunters in camp and we have all seen outstanding action. It was one of the most heart pumping opening days I have ever had, then things went quiet … too quiet!

For the rest of the week, if you didn’t know better, you would swear there was never an elk around these parts. It took a lot just to see an elk or two. It was like they disappeared off the face of the earth.

But that’s elk hunting-feast or famine.

“Herd” animals … heard of them … never see them, however that’s what adds to the adventures, and we are a relentless group.

Sooner or later-looks like later-was going to be the norm.

To add to our misery of not seeing elk after that fantastic opening day, things were dampened even more. It wasn’t our spirits, rather, it was us! Literally, we have never seen it as wet as it was out there.

This is a place where cactus and sage, not known for moisture, grow. However, in the mornings, there was thick dew and everything was soaked. We would be soaked to the waist just on the walk in the morning darkness.

We tried Gortex socks and Gortex pants to keep our Gortex boots and feet dry, since cold, wet feet made unhappy bowhunters.

We found first-hand that Gortex waterproof breathable material boots hold water very well.

However, aside from being wet, and elk activity being slow, the trip would have been successful even if we didn’t see elk.

But we did, of the four of us, three of us are tagged out for elk.

Arnie started it off with a 5x4 bull, then Blaine scored also on a nice 5x4 bull, then it came to my turn when one morning it was like the elk woke up, and it was feast time.

There was a lot of action that morning and bulls were bugling all over. I was caught up in the action and when a bull came running from a kilometre away to my bugles and walked just metres from me.

I gave thanks over my bull, a good 5x5 bull with long antler tines; even though there were bigger bulls nearby, this bull will

when the smoke clears Even if the hunting had been terrible, frustration, dampness; painful at times, is a very positive and essential part of success = Successful.

also be the best table fare of the bunch.

We had barbequed back straps, enjoyed and shared the adventures with good friends, and did get some much needed R&R in between the action parts. It doesn’t get any better than that.

There is more to follow. I hope you enjoyed and made the best of your summer. Since autumn begins this Monday, September 22nd, there is still time to get out there and enjoy.

On The Wild Side Franklin Wolters Columnist

In my childhood, a good part of the area around home, especially the Grizzly Bear coulee, would by any standard be considered “wild” or “untamed”.

Horses not being used would run loose and paw for feed in areas where the prairie hay grew like it did for countless centuries.

Cattle in this part of the country needed to be wintered for the most part, although every once in a while there would turn up a renegade specimen that would get wild as any moose and any attempt at civilizing the critter would end up in failure. There are several instances I can recall those kinds of cows wintering on their own and bringing in a new calf come spring.

Whatever caused such animals to revert to the wild side would be hard to explain, but all the domesticated animals were, of course, at one time wild, right?

One summer a big, wild long-horned steer began to make its presence felt and stories were being told of this big animal charging and chasing people on horseback and hair-raising escapes happening.

An animal like that on the loose could turn up almost anywhere because the country was basically open.

Come fall roundup, this animal wound up on our farm as he came in with our cattle.

After he had put my Dad on the run several times, enough was enough, Dad thought.

He got several neighbours to help and, taking a team and a sleigh, they ventured out into the field where the cattle were pasturing on the fall stubble.

Can’t remember how it was divided up, but I’m sure he never was wasted and the danger was removed!

Once in a while a boar pig would go rank and start travelling the country, raising havoc and would have to be dealt with in a similar manner. I can’t imagine a more dangerous animal anywhere.

I’m hearing stories now of the European wild pigs that folks have been raising getting loose, and they are now considered a menace and causing problems in some fairly big area of this country-really scary kinds of situations.

I’m hearing reports of sightings of cougars right in my old neighbourhood and they are of course secretive and wary, so to ever see one they have to be, I’d say, quite plentiful!

Lots of deer to prey on might keep them honest, but I’d sure carry a gem if I’d go hiking the coulees now!

The country is getting wilder as of course the farms are getting larger, and homes further apart with lots of room for moose, or whatever animal likes solitude and quiet.

Early on, before they had fire guards to stop prairie fires, almost all trees and bush were gone and there was nowhere for animals to hide.

Once the prairie fires were controlled, a good few of the animals that were chased out by the settling of the country have begun to return again because people have left, open country and bush has re-grown for habitat and shelter.

So here we are again with the country regaining some of the wilderness we had to start with!

I can remember when even a deer was a rare sight and we’d all come running or stop the vehicle to watch the wonderful sight.

Now we dread seeing one for fear it will end up wrecking our vehicle.

Reluctantly, I turn left, leaving dirt road to join the traffic on this washboard of a secondary highway headed for town. It will be alright once I’m en route. It’s the leaving moments when I most feel the drag of melancholy.

The dog smells. I remind myself that in a few kilometres, this awareness will also dissipate. Well, not really. The self-preservation unit of my olfactory receptors will just adjust so that I can withstand her stench. The cat mews displeasure at being confined again after prolonged freedom.

She will settle once we’re further along.

This is not the first journey from here to there for any of us.

I turn on the radio. I haven’t listened to much of anything but birdsong and squirrels for a few days. The news is just ending.

Good, I think. I have all the information I can handle for now about the misery of the

Fall Gently world. I’m in luck. Next up is ‘Writers and Company’, featuring seasoned CBC host, Eleanor Wachtel. She’s interviewing British novelist, Kamila Shamsie about her new book, A God in Every Stone. Never heard of it. My interest is piqued.

I think of the missed opportunity of ten days past. It’s a common thing, this revisiting of moments when either I didn’t have my camera or it would have been dangerous to stop and use it. There was another day, not unlike this one, when I’d glimpsed an ancient combine---International Harvester, I think----in a wheat field. The diminishing light had been perfect. There, halfway across a vast field, the silhouette of a farmer harvesting his crop in the late afternoon of September. It’s not an uncommon sight, I know, but it captivates and fascinates me each time I am witness to it nonetheless.

There’s something sacred in that solitary vision. But I am an observer, not a participant. To the farmer, perhaps it is only a season wrought with endless hours of fatigue--working against time and always the threat of a change in the weather before

the task is done.

Traffic is light. I’m travelling slightly over the posted speed limit, yet one, two, three vehicles rush up until they’re nearly within a single vehicle length of my bumper, then gun it to pass. The Dodge Ram diesel takes an awful chance, I think, on the grade decline as we approach the bridge crossing the mighty North Saskatchewan.

I slow so he can pass without heightened danger. I acknowledge how fortunate I feel to have made the decision some time ago to unbuckle myself from the intensity of perpetually rushing everywhere. It’s an ongoing endeavour, but well worth the effort.

Wachtel’s guest speaks of her passion for historical knowledge. Research for her books uncovers details of a past that she was not formerly aware. She says this new knowledge enriches and enlivens her----or maybe that’s what I insert into the narrative as I listen. She speaks of India, Pakistan, and how their separation occurred.

She speaks of Partition, and I remember a movie of that name, the depiction of terri-

ble conflict between peoples who, from the outside, didn’t appear all that different in their goals.

For awhile, everything on either side of the road is shrouded in a soft golden light.

There’s a lone figure strolling on the opposite side of the road, his jacket over one shoulder. We wave in acknowledgement.

He can’t know that seeing him has initiated, for me, a narrative wherein he becomes the central character of an idealization of country life. Imagination is like that.

A few ducks linger in a roadside slough.

In the distance, the landscape is altered by installations of oil tanks in the fields. Signs of a prosperity different from that of the prairie food basket crops. I decrease speed slightly, this time to allow a truck hauling a travel trailer to pass on a curve nearing town. Let him hurry, I think as I glance out the window to note the perfect symmetry of shadows cast by giant cylinders of hay bales. I prefer to savour this journey from country to town as long as possible.

CHARLOTTETOWN, September 20, 2014 — The Town of Vermilion received a 5 Bloom rating and a special mention for the Splash Park during the 2014 National Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Charlottetown, PEI. The Town of Vermilion participated in the Class of Champions (Small) category along with Appleton NL, Dauphin MB, Millet AB, Southwest Middlesex NB, Sussex NB, and Tiginsh PE. In July, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – in regards to the following criteria: Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscape and Floral Displays.

Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Roger Younker and Alex Pearl wrote: “The Spray Park at Vermilion River Provincial Park in Vermilion, Alberta opened in May 2014. It is a testament to the co-operation

between Alberta Provincial Parks, Vermilion Town Council and the citizens of Vermilion, of which the Communities in Bloom committee was very visible. The costing arrangement saw each partner raise 1/3 of the necessary funds, so the project could go from being just a piece of paper on the planning table to actual construction and completion. On a summer day in July, when the CiB judges visited Vermilion, they found the Splash Park a bee hive of activity and in pristine condition. More than 40 parents and children were enjoying what the park had to offer. That even included animal sounds, as if you were on an Alberta farm”.

Within the actual context of climate changes and environmental concerns, communities involved in the program can be proud of their efforts, which provide real and meaningful environmental solutions and benefit all of society.

I recently attended a family celebration in which beautiful cheesecake bars were served. They were as delicious as they were delightful to look at. So here is a cheese cake with a twist. This cheesecake looks so pretty with swirls of raspberry puree decorating the top. It is served cut into squares.

It is made in a regular 8 x 8 cake pan.

The trick is to line the baking pan with aluminum foil, which helps the cheese cake to come free of the pan like a spring form pan. The foil will simply peel away from the desert once it is chilled, making it easy to cut the cheesecake into squares. Since I

got to help in the making of this desert, I can share my experience with you.

The recipe calls for lemon zest and lemon juice from two lemons. For those of you unfamiliar with zesting, it is the grating of the lemon rind with a medium or fine grater. I usually grate the peel down to the white pectin, and then cut the lemon in half and extract the juice with a reamer. Some people just squeeze the lemons with their hands to extract the juice. I think the raspberry swirl could easily be changed to blueberries or whatever you desire. raspberry swirl lemon cheesecake Bars Crust Graham wafer crumbs 4 Tablespoons melted butter 1 tablespoon sugar Filling 2 packages of fat reduced cream

cheese at room temperature 1/2 cup sugar 2 lemons, zest and juice 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons flour Pinch of salt Topping 1/2 cup raspberries 2 Tablespoons sugar For the crust, combine the grahams wafer crumbs, the melted butter, and the sugar. Press this mixture into the bottom of an 8 x 8” pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

For the cheesecake filling: use an electric mixer to beat the sugar and cream cheese together until smooth and creamy.

Beat in the eggs. Next beat in the lemon zest and the lemon juice. Finish by quickly beating in the flour and salt. Spread this on

top of the baked graham wafer crust.

To make the raspberry puree for the swirl topping: mash the raspberries well with a fork and stir in the sugar. Drizzle the puree onto the top of the cheese cake in streams or teaspoonfuls, and then take the thick toothpick or a skewer and draw swirl patterns in the raspberry puree to make the top look pretty.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Allow to cool completely in the refrigerator before cutting. When you are ready to cut the cheesecake into bars, lift the cake out of the pan using the foil, peel back the foil and allow the cheesecake to sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before cutting. The room temperature standing time helps the graham wafer crust to be cut neatly without breaking or chipping apart.

Lakeland College hosted its very own Colour Me Rowdy 5K race on September 13 at the Lloydminster campus.

The race featured five colour stations where Rustler athletes pelted runners with colour bombs from all directions.

Money raised goes to three great causes−Rustlers Athletics, two new student awards, and The Terr y Fox Foundation.

VES Students Learn To Value R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

If you have never been to a VES Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meeting, you should definitely attend. They are always so positive and informative, and president, Kaylan Zorn, does a terrific job of leading them. The first PAC meeting of the 2014-15 school year took place at 7:00 on Sept. 15. At this meeting, Shawna, the new VIBE coach, told a little about VIBE, the grade 5 teachers talked about an inquiry based learning project, and Ms. King shared about the grade 6 band instruments and grade 5 recorders. School board trustee, Jim King, was in attendance to give information from their last board meeting, and Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Doherty discussed the happenings within our school. The next PAC meeting, which is also the AGM (Annual General Meeting), will take place on Oct. 20. Mark it on your calendar and make it a priority to attend.

The PAC would love more parent participation.

VES is pleased to announce that we have hired another kindergarten teacher. Ms. Kelsey Gadke met our staff on Sept. 16, and she will start teaching on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 23. Ms. Gadke will continue to teach part time kindergarten in Clandonald as well as part time in VES. We are excited to have her join our staff.

We held our first AR assembly on Sept.16. We currently have about 12 students participating in cross country running under the direction of Mrs. McCullough and Mrs. Joa, and Mr. Faull is coaching about 28 kids in volleyball. In our assembly, we also reviewed ‘respect’, as that is the main virtue our school is working on this year. The students and staff participated in a hula hoop activity and we sang our theme song. Mr. Beecroft showed us the video he made showcasing last year’s events in VES. Mr. Harvey gave us information about our school’s participation in the upcoming Terry Fox National School Run Day on Sept. 24, and encouraged everyone to bring a toonie as a donation.

O n S e pt . 17, t h e c r o s s c o u nt r y running team participated in the Runnin’ Riverdale XC Race. The VES Jaguars were out on the prowl and came back with Gr. 4 boys 1st and 4th, Gr. 5 boys 1st and 13th, Gr. 6 boys 1st and 4th, Gr. 4 girls 14th and 20th, Gr. 5 girls 6th and 11th, and Gr. 6 girls 8th and 10th place finishes. We are very proud of their effort and accomplishments. Their next meet will be their home event, “Vermilion’s Autumn Cross Country Running Challenge” on Sept. 23 at the Vermilion Provincial Park.

The Good Life Institute: Upcoming Events The Good Life Institute Submitted

On September 27 join local astrophotographer Rob Baron for Photographing the Night Sky. It will be an evening of tips and techniques for capturing stunning images of the night sky.

Many modern digital cameras have excellent low light abilities making nighttime photography popular.

Topics that will be discussed in this class include: which cameras and accessories to use, what techniques capture night-time images of cities, landscapes, sunsets, star trails, the Milky Way, aurora and lightning. The class will also discuss image processing techniques to enhance

low-light images and to create fascinating animations. If the weather permits, the class will move outdoors to photograph the night sky.

What to Bring: Bring your own camera and tripod. The ideal camera would be a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera with interchangeable lenses. If you have a remote shutter release, bring that too. Digital point and shoot cameras can be used, but may have limitations. Bring your camera manual as you may try functions you have never used before.

If you bring your DSLR camera, there will be a telescope on site with adapters for Nikon, Canon and Pentax cameras so you can try your hand taking close up pictures of a planet, galaxy, planetary

nebula or star cluster. Don’t forget to bring warm clothes suitable for cool fall nights.

Town of Vermilion Ice Bucket challenge This group challenge was spurred

by Dr. Tracy Edwards, President of Lakeland College and by Gerald Hiebert, Manager of the Eastalta Co-op. The four participants met the challenge head on.

“We were told to wear hard hats,” Bruce MacDuff said. “That water had about 8 bags of ice in it.” and the drenching went well. Town Foreman Keith Wilkinson worked the backhoe with its loader filled with ice cold water. The event was captured on video.

A New Roof For The Vermilion Heritage Museum

Meals for seniors Jenny Deschner began receiving Meals for Seniors about one year ago. The program was thought out by Charlene Young to help seniors who might be housebound, disabled, or simply don’t feel like having to go out and do their shopping.

Whatever the situation a senior finds himself or herself in, Lil Wilson and six colleagues are delivering healthy, hearty meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays, rain, snow or shine.

“We are filling a need,” said Lasting Impressions’ Charlene Young. “When seniors get a hearty, nutritious meal, they feel better, they have more energy, and their health improves.”

The three-course meals include a hot dish, a salad and a dessert.

Jenny Deschner really likes the meatloaf and the chicken, but there is a good variety on the menu; all the meals are tasty and often last her a couple of days.

The Museum’s roof problem began with a heavy rain storm last June, and it worsened over time as the water progressed down the sloping roof. The leak appeared unannounced in the foyer, and, without delay, a local roofer was sent up to check the roof.

The news sent shockwaves through the Board of Directors: The 25 year-old roof must be replaced, completely. Four estimates have been received, and the news gets more serious.

The cost of a new roof will be around $50,000.

From September 22 onward, the Museum Board will begin a fundraising drive with letters to every business in Vermilion, appealing for donations.

Please join the fundraising drive with your best donation for the preservation of Vermilion’s long and proud history.

The Museum’s Annual General Meeting will take place on October 30 at 7:30 p.m. Whether you are a member of the Museum, or you have never set foot in the Museum, please be sure to attend the meeting and get a feel for what goes on in this valuable and relevant organization. The Museum’s Directors are always seeking new members for the Board. Are you the one?

This may surprise you: the Heritage Museum is managed entirely by volunteers. They are a 60-strong force of, mostly, seniors who take care of every aspect of the Museum.

Volunteers and Board members are happy to give you an evening tour. If you have a relative or friend from out of town, for example, and you would like them to experience the history of Vermilion, please call (780) 853-6211.

This year there were 487 visitors in the Museum, including 18 from British Columbia, 23 from Saskatchewan, 5 from Manitoba, 5 from Ontario, 2 from New Brunswick, 2 from the Northwest Territories, 2 from the United States, 3 from Scotland, 1 from Budapest, 2 from Denmark and 1 from Japan.

You are invited to place the name of a loved one on a plaque on the Museum’s Memorial Tree Garden. With a $25.00 donation, the Museum will place the card and the obituary in their Memorial Book.

You are also invited to look up a loved one in the Obituary Collection. The collection includes newspaper clippings, the memorial card, and an obituary of past Vermilion residents.

The Museum will be open on Alberta Culture Days from 10:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The Museum is always open for donations. You may make your donation at Fantasy Flowers.

Since the Heritage Museum is a charitable organization, tax receipts will be issued.

JR Robson’s Marauders Shine at the Senior Girls Invitational

The Senior Girls Invitational hosted by St. Jerome’s was buzzing with 16 teams from Alberta and Saskatchewan on September 20.

JR Robson’s Marauders excelled over the Medstead Mustangs 25 -21 and 25 -16. The Marauders, with seven players in grade 12 and four in grade 11 have been playing as a team for only one year, but they shone throughout the games.

At the Mega Volley Tournament hosted by J.R. Robson School on the previous week, the Marauder team finished 11th out of 40 teams.

Vermilion Minor hockey atoms The Atoms are preparing to start the minor hockey season.

This week they are doing team program development where they practice skating and perform drills to get conditioned for the year ahead. Once the team program development is complete, hockey players will be assigned to either a Tier One or a Tier Three team.

In larger minor hockey leagues, there can be more divisions such as double A and triple A teams. Players are chosen to play in one of the divisions based on their level of skill.

The Tier One division, which will be coached by Darren Zubiak this year, consists of the stronger, more skilled, better quality players. Tier Three players work towards increasing their skill levels to become Tier One players in future hockey seasons. Photos Nicole Crossan.

This is an annual The show ends with the presentation of event that takes place in the fall, and it serves three purposes.

Pirate Crew Retreats Monica To, JR Robson School Submitted

Marauder football players kicked off their season with a game in Westlock and more recently a home game against Vegreville.

This season’s J.R. members include Gage Myshak, Tristen Gagne, Carter Usenik, Devon Winter, Jeremiah Ball, Tyson Alexander, Greg Perillat, Colton Katuski, Ethan Bounier, Brayden Chilibeck, Donovan Yaceyko, Shane Thorsteinson, Colton Convey, William Snider, Cavin Jones, Ryley Bates, Tyler Bilusack, Tanner Throndson and Tyson Pashulka. Ismail Uden contributes as the team’s water-boy and Cathy Wolters is the public relations manager.

Mr. Earl Weidner (our junior high Language Arts teacher), Nick Wolfe, Wyatt Roberts, and Ken Myshak assist with our senior high Social Studies teacher, Coach Lorne Maier.

Megavolley recently consumed the local gymnasiums as our annual home tournament invited 40 teams to compete. Our school was abuzz for three consecutive days as the event took place. Thanks to St. Jerome’s School and Lakeland College for lending their facilities!

Students in Physical Education 20 and 30 paddled down the North Saskatchewan River with Mr. Woodward last week. Miss Christie, former Social Studies, Outdoor Education, and Physical Education teacher,

accompanied with her survival expertise as well. Grade 10 gym class students will have their river experience on September 23 and 24.

The yearbook crew has started up in efforts to wrap up last year as well as start capturing 68 pages of memories via photos and captions. The trusty senior crew returned including Kirsten Evans, Haley Hendriks, Jacob Bush, Shauna Wasylik, Cassidy Stepanick and Donovan Yaceyko.

(Special thanks to 2014 Marauder graduate, Kali Brodbin, for her help over the summer!)

Several junior high students in grade 7 and 8 have joined the group to kick-start the 2015 yearbook.

J.R.’s Bring Your Own Device pilot project has come together to enhance many classroom experiences; each student owns or may borrow a school laptop or notebook to use. In both junior and senior high, several elective and core courses are utilizing the one-to-one ratio as students complete and submit work online, research via the web, and work with Google drive.

J.R.’s Open House was held two weeks ago and had over 125 people attend.

Students and their families were invited to see the classrooms, meet the teachers, and have a hotdog supper. Mr. Grosky manned the grill while Mrs. Hart, Mr. Atkinson, Miss Felt, and Grade 11 student, Cameron Webb. Wyatt Payne and Colton Wynnychuk took charge of the popcorn stand.

On Thursday, September 18, the staff participated in their annual highway clean up. Over 20 years ago, Mannville School Staff adopted a 4 km stretch of highway 16 just east of Mannville and have been responsible for maintaining it ever since.

Competing for Mannville School at the BTJHAA Golf tournament on September 23rd are Sam Rutt, Max Amero, Zach Polishuk, and Shayne Heward.

The Innisfree boys volleyball team worked to even the score against Mannville, but lost two out of the three sets.

The grade three class rocks! The students are currently studying rocks and minerals in their science class. They have worked on classification and properties of rocks and are creating their own pet rocks in art class.

The grade four students were given a challenge of getting a marshmallow to stay on top of a spaghetti tower. Students found it was easier to work in a group with support than to work on their own. Good thinking, grade 4.

In grade 5 they are going to have a bubblicious year. Science has started off with the “Weather Watch” unit. They have been tracking and learning about the weather. Within no time we will have a class full of meteorologists.

Dreams Are Possible

“I just wish people would realise that anything is possible if you try. Dreams are made if people try.” – Terry Fox Dreams are possible, it just takes time, patience and hard work. Everyone can relate to hard work and it pays off when, at the end of the day, you are one (or maybe a few) steps closer to your dream. The staff and students continue to strive towards their goals and it has definitely paid off.

Over the weekend the Senior High girls journeyed to Vermilion where they played some great volleyball at the Mega Volleyball tournament and they even made it to the semi-final round. They honed their volleyball skills and plan to put them to the test again at the tournament at St. Jerome’s, this weekend. Good luck, girls!!! Show them what Panther Pride looks like!!

The Cross Country team went on the road to Riverdale where they competed

against runners from around the school division. It was a beautiful day to slip on their running shoes and show how much they’ve improved since the beginning of the season. All the runners showed their true runner’s spirit and ran fantastic races. Way to go, team!

The following runners placed in the top six in their grade categories: Gr. 5 (Girls): Laramie Parr 2nd, (Boys) Coleson Soloy 3rd, Brenton Romanchuk 4th, Gr. 9 (Girls): Kenedi Wood 4th, (Boys): Tyler Manchen 6th, Gr. 10 (Boys): Keagan Rewuski 2nd.

Although not everyone received a ribbon there were a few runners that matched or even beat their personal best from last year.

It takes guts and a whole lot of trying to go out there and run 2, 3, or even 5K, not everyone can do that. We are proud of this accomplishment. Awesome job!!!

The week ended with the whole school participating in the annual Terry Fox Run. A few distinguished guests, Curtis Hargrove and Rusty Smith as well as a few parents

joined the school as we toured through town and then continued onto the Chuckwagon track. Dewberry Co-op contributed to the race by donating bottled water to the participants. Thank you, Dewberry Co-op, we sure did appreciate it!

The track was a sea of runners and walkers with names of family or friends that had suffered from cancer plastered on stickers on their backs. Not only did they run but they also raised over $750 for the cause.

The school’s goal was $1500; we are half way there!!! If you haven’t donated and still would like to, please feel free to contact the school. A huge thank you goes out to all those that donated!!

As we carry on into another week we will resume trying and working towards our dreams. One thought to keep in the forefront of our minds is that along our road we will stumble and fail, but remember “our mistakes should be our motivation, not our excuses!”

Te a m s a n d i n d i v i d u a l s f r o m a l l over nor theastern Alber ta gathered at the Mannville and Vermilion golf courses on September 16. Tryouts to discover who would be able to attend t h e g o l f zo n e s t o u r n a m e n t s we r e held beforehand and chosen youth traveled to one of the two local golf courses.

S e n i o r G i r l s p l aye d g o l f a t t h e Vermilion Golf Course. Eight schools and 24 golfers were in attendance.

It turned out to be a beautiful, warm day after a couple days of colder fall temperatures earlier in the week.

Senior Boys competed at the Mannville Golf Course. Six teen schools and 49 golfers were present.

All the schools were 1A (schools with 99 high school students or less) or 2A schools (a level above 1A with about 100-249 high school students).

At the end of the day, a gold medal team and gold and silver medal individuals will go to provincials in Cochrane on September 29-30.

The gold winner of the Senior Girls Golf Tournament was Kenzie Smith from Mannville and the silver winner was Ashley Lyster also from Mannville. These individuals will go on to compete in the Provincials as re pre se nt at i ve s of t h e N or t h Ea st Zone.

The team competition winner was the Ashmont girls team and St. Jerome’s girls team came in second.
