As it happens, Dr. Edwards is terrified of heights. But on August 4, at the Emergency Training Centre (ETC) of Lakeland College, she confronted that fear and went up on a firetruck’s 100-foot aerial platform.

In addition to the mental preparation required to face an ingrained fear, to go on the ladder, strict procedures regarding safety must be observed.

Saturday, 27th “Detour” is a lively 5-piece variety band from the Lloydminster/Vermilion area which will perform on Saturday September 27 from 12 till 2:00 p.m. by the Heritage museum. The band features Carmela McDonald, Rob Baron, Dennis Gerik, Barry Sherwood and Tim Donily.

Detour’s musical selections feature highly recognizable feel good songs, and some songs that you may not have heard for a while played live. Their show includes current and classic rock pop songs blended with jazz influences.

Detour will take you down many paths.

At 3:30 p.m. the muster begins in front of Town Hall, for what promises to be a great parade.

4 p.m. The Parade will feature students from several schools. Details will follow as soon as they become available.

From 5 till 7 p.m., CLASS will be hold-

ing a Multicultural Potluck in the Elks Hall.

There will be exciting foods, costumes, and entertainment.

Whether you are Canadian, Jamaican, Asian, Latin American or from any other culture, everyone is welcome. And be advised that to participate, you need to bring a potluck dish.

New and exotic recipes are strongly encouraged, as are signs explaining what ingredients are included, and decorations or flags showing where the dish comes from.

Musical Ride Charges Through Wainwright Karen Nedzielski Submitted

The RCMP musical ride can for some people, symbolize the true Canadian patriotism with their red serge uniforms and sunning black horses as they partner together to perform intricate moves with more than 30 horse and rider combinations all in unison to music.

The 2014 RCMP musical ride made their way to Wainwright on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at the stampede grounds where the Wainwright 4H Multi club played host with sponsor, Brias Incorporated, as a fundraiser for the club.

Before the musical ride the crowd in attendance was treated to some highaction horse acrobatics performed by the trick riding duo Jennifer Sych and Shelby Fulkerth, of JS Trick Riders.

The proud horses and riders adorned in their red jackets marched forward directly following and the crowd showed their appreciation with a thunderous round of applause.

For one of the officers riding that day, it would a bitter sweet ride as Constable Jenn Burgoyne took her last ride aboard her Hanoverian mare, Emma.

The Constable was not planning on being a RCMP officer and was working on an undergraduate in Criminology, looking at going into a research and developing program when she worked at a summer student position in a immigrant and passport section in Milton, Ontario. Her boss there encouraged her to look at the RCMP as a career.

Burgoyne says the RCMP officer application process can take up to two years but her process went start to finish in 6 months.

Then they wanted her to leave for training but the young student had another year of University and expressed she wanted to complete her studies first. The institution told her they would not wait so Burgoyne carried on with her life as an undergraduate. A couple weeks later she received a call from them saying they would still take her after her studies were complete and the following year she flew out on Mother’s Day, the day after her final exam.

Burgoyne joined the musical ride in 2011 after her three and a half year post in Salt Spring Island, B.C. B ur g oy n e an d h er c o m m o n - law husband were both chosen to tour with the

ride and attending training in the summer in 2010 but due to her pregnancy with son, Brayson, had to sit out the tour to stay home with their son. Husband Dane McCarty, went on to tour for two years without Burgoyne but last year, both were able to join the tour together which meant their son would spend the summer with both sets of grandparents while the duo toured with the ride in 2014.

This year saw Burgoyne tour alone while Dane stayed home with their son.

Burgoyne said the summer apart was harder than she anticipated as she spent phone calls reading bedtime stories to her

son instead of tucking him in.

Two weeks prior to the Wainwright show, Burgoyne was surprised with a visit from her husband and son which she says was a pleasant surprise. It would have otherwise been more than ten weeks before she would have seen her family.

Being a woman in the RCMP can be hard for women as their drive to be mothers can be overweighed but the urge to serve.

Burgoyne will be leaving the RCMP musical ride prematurely as she and husband Dane have both been transferred to Alberta from their Ontario posts. But mid-September Burgoyne will take a post in Sherwood Park and Dane will take a post in Tofield, making a fast move forcing her to leave the ride abruptly.

Burgoyne’s horse Emma will stay with the ride and complete the year and will have a new rider partner with her to wow the crowds through the season’s end.

Burgoyne says there may be a few growing pains, especially on the first ride or two, but says she will do fine with her new rider.

The horses were stabled at the Dale Myggland barn north of Wainwright, moving in the Tuesday before the ride. Myggland is a leader of the 4H multi club and said the

A newcomer is usually someone who has survived the often lengthy and involved process of Canadian immigration. It also applies to a Canadian who has been transplanted to Vermilion from another part of the country.

Emigration is hard. No one can imagine how difficult the transition is going to be.

Since one is usually floating in dreams and hopes for the future, it is easy to lose sight of the obstacles ahead.

I have lived in this country for more than 30 years and am a Canadian citizen—I was a Newcomer once and I remember.

It’s fair to say that, those of us who choose to leave everything we have ever known and forge a new life in Canada, when making our choice, we are not necessarily considering aspects of money, advancement, or benefits.

People like me usually choose to leave their cultures because something fundamental is missing there.

Call it rights and freedoms; call it the economic climate or bad government; whatever their reasons, those who emigrate have realized that they cannot live without certain basic ingredients, and so they have chosen to rip those roots out, endure the

pain, and forge ahead.

When I was a new immigrant daunted by the breadth and organization of the city of Toronto, it was a great surprise to be welcomed into a culture that seemed to tolerate my shortcomings.

I have to say that the Canadian attitude of ‘be who you are’ certainly made the transition easier for me.

There are hundreds of Newcomers to Vermilion. Surprised? They hail from all over: Asia, Jamaica, Latin America and Europe, and several regions in Canada.

To think that there is a group in this town which directs and orients new arrivals is heartening. When an individual or group make the transition easier for new arrivals, the quality of their lives automatically rises.

Making life changes is always complicated. Changing cultures can be frightening.

People in Vermilion who help newcomers and transplanted Canadians cope and adapt are doing a service to the entire community because those who adapt quickly will prosper sooner.

Also there is Alberta Culture Days. Bringing traditions and customs together offers a perfect opportunity for newcomers, be they from Canada or other countries, to meet each other and show their colours.

This is our chance to show off and experience the marvels and mysteries of other cultures, other regions.

Alberta Culture Days is one big, exciting show. I hope to see you here.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, I lost both of my legs below the knee due to meningitis and was enrolled at the age of ten in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend The War Amps 2014 Western Seminar in Winnipeg as a Junior Counsellor. The Seminar brought together child amputees from Alberta, Saskatche-

wan and Manitoba.

Junior Counsellors are representatives of the Association and role models for younger Champs as they too grow up in CHAMP. I am able to help out with the seminar during the many sessions, and talk to the parents of new child amputees.

Having been a Junior Counsellor for almost five years now, I find the role to be

beneficial to me as well. It gives me an opportunity to inspire young Champs, much like the Junior Counsellors I looked up to when I was a newer amputee. I remember being so relieved to see that someone who had an amputation similar to my own was still able to lead a successful and complete life, and now I can give back by doing this for others.

As someone who has benefited, I would like to thank all of you who support The War Amps Key Tag Service, which has made these programs possible for young amputees like me.

Jenesse Graling, the second pianist, is one of the famous Graling Sisters who is able to transform from “a warm songstess to a pop star in seconds.”

This fantastic duo will be coming to Marwayne November 29 for a nonprofit fall fundraiser. The Marwayne Dance Association will raise funds to pay for dance costumes, instructor wages, competition fees, and the overhead costs associated with being part of a dance club in a small community.

Every song, story or poem starts with a blank, clean piece of paper. The creation of the script starts as a thought, idea, or a memory so memorable that it’s important to express it and have it recorded.

Some of us have been given the ability to express those thoughts in a way that makes the story come alive, or at least that’s the creator’s goal. When I write stories of the days and times of my childhood and how isolated it was in those long cold winters and how it was to sit around a table with only one lighted lamp in the whole house, I wanted to have you see what it would have been like to be there.

Think of traveling in an open sleigh and having the cold for long periods just to travel for basic things. Just for fun trips took a bit of thought to challenge. If you wrote of a card party or dance and the get-togethers where folks had to brave bad roads or weather just to be a part of the community, even simple

things took on such a special feeling.

Funny how people who have endured the long, lonely times of that isolation, got to become neighbors and learned to really get along and be friendly. I think nowadays we are maybe forgetting that. These days you can carry a telephone with you anywhere, you forget how people had to ride for hours in an open sleigh just to get to the closest phone. You really needed to phone wouldn’t you think.

In those times it wasn’t 100% guaranteed the phone would work when you did get to the neighbour who still could afford one. My folks had a phone and I remember folks coming with those kinds of problems and needed to, really needed to phone for help.

Yes, a blank piece of paper, ready for thoughts to be recorded on it so others can feel what you felt in those long ago times.

I’m sure kids who get picked up at the gate by the school bus would wonder how they would manage to trudge miles through deep snow and in cold wind to a poorly heated building and have to go a hundred yards to sit in a frigid little outhouse to take care of your basic functions, you didn’t make the trip unless you really had to as I remember!

So many memories of those chores: packing in wood and water, and then packing out the ashes, and emptying out the thunder mugs and latrine pails every day. Kids were necessary in those days, remember.

So long I thought of recording those experiences of my youth and wondering if they would make any difference in today’s world if they were known. And yes, many folks relate to them, and they do, I think, influence our young folk in helping them realize the value of taking responsibility.

I remember so fondly the influence of my mom and dad, and how they made sure I was taught to be RESPONSIBLE!!

The best of lessons was also being taught of your value and worth and that you were really a cherished member of a family.

I’m so proud of my roots and the raising I enjoyed. It makes all the challenges of life seem like they could be beaten.

Remember the challenge of learning to do anything; how you took it on, and how you did everything you could to master it. Be it riding a bike, planting a garden, and having it produce or any worthwhile endeavour, it

took all your ingenuity and energy. But how pleased you were when you did accomplish it to a finite degree.

I remember taking on the harmonica and devoting hours to practice and playing to where I can now entertain. Yes it is so satisfying. I farmed and ranched and ran a business and was at least somewhat successful.

I think of overcoming the natural fear of the unknown when I took flying lessons and in spite of the times I was beyond being scared even and eventually did fly my own little aircraft. Just like a blank piece of paper, your life needs your creativity to fill it in such a way it has meaning at least to yourself.

I’m so thankful I have had so many really special people who have helped me fill my page. I sing a Moe Bandy song called “Till I’m Too Old to Die Young.”

In the chorus it goes: “Let me watch my children grow, to see what they’ll become. Oh, Lord don’t let that cold wind blow. Till I’m too old to die young.”

Well my kids are all grown and I’m so proud of them, so let that cold wind blow.

In almost any endeavour, there are spotlight roles and there are supporting roles. Whether in the workplace or in the theatre, the job of the latter is to enhance the efforts of the former. Each of us is a performer with a specific purpose. The quality, or success, of the production we’re featured in wholly depends upon how well each player fulfills our unique responsibilities.

It’s not difficult to imagine that any one of us is more likely to achieve success----however we might define it----if we can count on the unconditional support of a few good people. If we have that kind of backup, we always look (and feel) grounded. One of our first challenges is to decide upon what kind of position we’re best equipped to occupy.

Are we the soloists or the backups?

Many years ago, I read some interesting material about personality. Each of us has a natural position in the universe, with certain innate qualities shining through more powerfully than others. It doesn’t mean that we can’t alter the balance so that, for example, a natural introvert can’t train to become more outgoing, or that a natural leader can’t subvert the tendency to lead and become the trusted assistant rather than the manager. Our reasons for making the choices we do are our own business.

Having an awareness of our most natural abilities, though, helps to clearly identify what tools we have available. Then it’s up to us to determine how best to utilize our natural gifts to achieve the most satisfaction in our lives according to our personal guidelines of what that means.

In my 20s, I had a good friend who was, in my opinion, a gifted musician. For a long while, everyone around him seemed

Peanut Butter cookies With the kids being back in school, and the farmers in the field harvesting, having a batch of home baked cookies could come in handy for lunches. This is a perfect vintage peanut butter cookie recipe from my very old Five Roses cookbook. It is my very favorite peanut butter cookie recipe. I want to experiment with it using less sugar, but so far it is just the original recipe.

Interestingly, peanut butter has many health benefits. It is a very good source of antioxidants. The mono-saturated fat in peanut butter includes oleic acid, the kind found in olive oil, that has been found to be Mediterranean diet heart healthy. Peanuts are also a source of resveratrol. Reveratrol is the beneficial substance found in red wine.

In the nurses’ health study, which involved 86,000 women, it was found that there was a correlation between nut consumption and a reduced risk of cardio-vascular disease.

Many of the nutrients found in peanuts have anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown peanuts to reduce the risk of colon cancer, gall stones, weight gain and Alzheimer’s.

Peanut butter is an excellent source of biotin, which is good for better blood sugar balance, lowering cholesterol and healthy hair and nails.

Before you send anything peanut butter, with your kids to schools, be sure to check with your school to be sure that peanut butter and nuts are allowed. Some schools have a no nut policy if there is a child that has a severe peanut or nut allergies.

Neil Diamond Interpreter Jason Scott Performs In Vermilion Elina Castro Reporter

Jason Scott’s show on September 13 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Vermilion promises to be a cracklin’ event.

The performer, who began playing music at the age of five has been interpreting the iconic Neil Diamond since the late nineties.

Scott is a spawn of the 1980s rock ‘n roll West Coast movement when bands broke out and took over the night club scene all over British Columbia.

Scott has been playing in clubs since then. But it was at a different kind of club that he was discovered. Ironically, Jason Scott’s life changed during a casual karaoke night in Vancouver in 1997.

He never meant to do it, but when his friends insisted he sing “Love on the Rocks,” Scott, who knew Neil Diamond’s songs, walked onto the stage secretly wondering how he would tune in with the sultry low registers of the iconic singer.

Vermilion Allied Arts 1st Season Performance

If you go down to the crossroads of roots and soul, you’ll find singer, songwriter and guitarist Charlie A’Court, whose honest purpose in life is to connect people, one emotion at a time.

Growing up in the rural village of MacCallum Settlement (outside of Truro, Nova Scotia), Charlie A’Court had little to rely on for entertainment except his imagination and music. Spending hours every day delving into his father’s collection of vinyl, Charlie would lose himself in a world of blues, roots, soul and folk. “I was discovering singers like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke and I remember being so profoundly moved and almost not old enough to know why,” says A’Court. “There was something honest about the way they sang. They would sing with such conviction that simply commanded attention.”

It wasn’t long before Charlie A’Court discovered albums featuring blistering blues guitar. Artists like B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins and Albert King made their way to the top of the pile and to the ears of a young, imaginative A’Court. Charlie A’Court recalls, “These guys would wail in a way where every note mattered. They sang without apology and played guitar like it was their last day.” It was a guitarist from England that changed the way A’Court would look at blues. “Eric Clapton really opened my mind as a musician. He was taking blues and showing it could be contemporary. Clapton’s music showed me that my music could balance between blues and adult contemporary songwriting.”

Fearlessly bridging genres and challenging stylistic conventions, Charlie A’Court has toured Canada and abroad, with headline performances at the Stan Rogers Folk Fest (CAN), Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival (CAN), Kerrville Folk Fest (USA) and Woodford Folk Festival (AUS). A’Court has shared

the stage with high profile artists including James Cotton, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, George Thorogood, Harry Manx, Martin S ex t o n, D e l b e r t McClinton, Colin James and Dan Aykroyd.

Alberta Farmer: Ceriel Mauws Jr. Billi-Jean Miller Submitted

This is what 73 years of love, commitment, loyalty, pride and hard work look like. And, that’s not his age! Ceriel Mauws Jr. turned 87 this October. This fall, though, was his 73rd year of working the full harvest on his 102-year-old (and counting) farm.

Mauws Farms received its’ Alberta Farm Centennial Plaque two summers ago. This har vest, though, marked another milestone for the farm. Ceriel Mauws Jr. (a second generation farmer from the Earlie District) completed his 73rd full harvest on that farm. Ceriel’s dad filed for homestead on April 19, 1910. Ceriel Sr. and his brother Jules (or the “Mauws Boys”, as they were known) came from Belgium. Today – Ceriel Jr. is the patriarch of that family and that farm and still lives there today. Not many people other than him can say they’ve seen so much change; and at the same time, not many have seen that much permanence, either.

Ceriel has always lived here. He has, also, always had the same neighbors – the Millers. In 1911, David Miller (the Ist) walked south from the Kitscoty train looking for his land plot. When he found it - he saw a light that beckoned from nearby.

He walked over to a shack and was met by two men: Ceriel Sr. and Jules Mauws.

David’s new neighbors gave him food;

and from that night on became friends.

That was 102 years ago. Ever since that day; it has been a century long friendship between the two families. The Millers and the Mauws’ are still neighbors. Today, David Miller IV (or “Dean” as he’s more commonly called) lives across the road from Mr. Mauws. Dean is the 4th Generation Miller to be living on that neighboring farm and I happen to be married to him.

of friendship. Ceriel Mauws Jr was born in the Lloydminster Hospital on October 4, 1925. 86 years later at 11:11pm on November 1st in that same Hospital, his newest neighbor (our daughter Madeline) was born. Madeline Lily Miller is the 5th Generation of Miller that Ceriel Jr. has known. That’s a lot of history -- and, that’s right in our backyard.

This October 4, 2014 – Ceriel Mauws will turn 89 years old. He is ready to board

the combine for his 75th harvest.

Karley Dieken Taekwondo Blackbelt

“To earn a Blackbelt in Taekwondo it takes hours and hours of work and dedication, and lots of courage and perseverance,” said a smiling Karley Dieken. “Also, it takes keeping an open mind to try new things.”

The Raptor Taekwando student met with the Voice at Vermilion Elementary School on September 5.

Although she began at age 9, later than most, Dieken is no regular student. Under the guidance of Master G r e g H a s l e h ur s t , s h e e ar n e d h er Blackbelt in 5 years. “ S in c e I wa s lit t l e, I always felt comfor table with the moves,” said Dieken. She knew that Taek wondo was for her. “But now that I’m older,

I’ve begun to appreciate what the art teaches you.”

Dieken’s Blackbelt test was particularly successful. The test consists of two parts: Part 1 involves watching the student’s progress. Part 2 includes choosing two mistakes the student can correct. Dieken earned her Blackbelt in one try.

The “never give up” spirit is what Dieken truly appreciates of the martial ar t . S he has also d evel o p e d as a person. Dieken feels she has become more of a leader, that she has begun to take charge of situations, and feels confident she can help people in class, at the gym and other situations.

“Taekwondo is a confidence builder.

The art teaches you to face the threat; look fear in the eye and respond,” said a proud Master Greg Haslehurst.

“ W h e n a p e r s o n i s t h r e at e n e d , freezing or running away is a natural reaction. A trained Taekwondo student does not shy away from the danger, and is not paralyzed by fear.”

Dieken has also learned to overcome obstacles. The first time she fought Master Haslehurst, Dieken was unwilling to attack; she was not sure of her moves. “Now she fights me with confidence and ability,” Haslehurst added with a grin. “ I am ex tremely proud of Karley achieving the significant milestone level of Blackbelt. Through her consistent training she has developed excellent Taekwondo techniques, pushed through mental and physical barriers, and is a wonder ful ambassador for what can be achieved through Raptor Taekwondo. “

Hypnotist Saves The Day At Innisfree Fair Nicole Crossan Reporter

Curtis Michael was given an unexpected opportunity to perform the evening of the Innisfree fair when the originally planned stage performers cancelled.

The crowd was delighted and impressed by what Curtis Michael had to bring and invited him back for their big 35th annual fair next year.

“Innisfree is my hometown. I grew up and went to school there,” Michael stated.

Curtis Michael is the stage name for one of our local teachers at JR Robson school in Vermilion where he is known as Mr. Zorniak and teaches industrial arts.

Originally trained as a hypnotherapist, Zorniak has helped people to lose weight, stop smoking, and overcome phobias and anxiety over the past couple years.

“At first, I was a bit sceptical about hypnosis...I kept failing my driving test due to my nerves. My hypnotherapist made me feel very relaxed with his calm, professional manner...not only did I go on to pass my test, but I also had a general sense of well being-effecting my whole life,” one patient reported.

Curtis Michael also does stage hypnotism using many of the techniques that Wayne Lee, his mentor, shared with him.

Wayne Lee is a stage hypnotist who is hired by Fortune 100 and 500 companies “to boost their team’s performance while having a blast,” waynelee.com stated.

Curtis Michael was a peer of Wayne Lee’s when they attended University of Alberta and asked if Lee would mentor him. Lee responded that he didn’t want to mentor anyone that wasn’t serious about hypnotism.

“There isn’t much of a transition between stage hypnotism and hypnotherapy except that one requires you to be entertaining and charismatic on stage and the other is a one-on-one session.”

Curtis Michael did his first stage hypnotism show in July, 2014 at the Pysanka Festival in Vegreville where people commented on how nice it was to have a positive show.

Haslehur st has c ontinued training and instructing Taekwondo throughout University and through his teaching career. Haslehurst is a teacher at Vermilion Elementary School.

The rooster was missing a few feathers and it ravenously consumed the Blue Jay seed, but otherwise it was in good spirits.

While Neil and Ryan Hunter watched over the rooster, Charlotte Wasylik drove from her farm near town to rescue the famished fowl. “Henry” is now in her care.

Touted as, “ The world’s premier showcase for Heavy Oil Knowledge and Technology,” on www.lhos.ca, the Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show is coming to Lloydminster Sept 10 - 11.

Forty Plus Years Of Chuckwagon Racing With Ed Buchmeier

Ed Buchmeier is fast approaching the age of 85 this October.

He started racing in 1967--one year before the APCCA was formed in 1968. Ed and his wife of 64 years, Dell, have been racing for 47 consecutive years. Their early races were in Bymore, Coronation and Hand Hills. Hand Hills is the only one that still hosts chuck wagon and chariot races. Only two grass tracks remain in Hand Hills and Patricia today.

Ed and Dell’s neighbour at the time, Lloyd Hawthorne, provided children’s pony rides. Ed and Dell went along to help. The ponies were taken off the merry-go-round in the evening and raced.

Ed thought Hawthorne was having too much fun and wanted part of the action, so Ed went out and purchased his first set of ponies--a pair of Palominos, royally named Prince and King. He purchased these two ponies at night by the light of headlights of his pickup truck, loaded them in and took them home.

By morning’s early light, Ed realized these two ponies were only 41 and 42 inches high (the maximum height at the time was 46” then increased to 48” then 54” and now 58 1/2” at the wither). At the time their height appeared to the making of an insurmountable challenge; however, Ed went on to win many shows with Prince and King.

Today’s modes of transportation are modern recreation vehicles and horse trailers, but in 1967 Ed Buchmeier loaded the ponies into the back of the pickup, complete with stock racks, and the tent trailer was pulled behind. The pickup truck afforded room for two more ponies and that space was quickly filled with a second chariot team.

These two teams put Ed and Dell Buchmeier in the winners many times over their career. In 1968, for example, Ed won 1st and 2nd in Patricia.

Over the years horses have been changed and upgraded; but Ed continu e s to b e a c o m p et i t i ve at r ac e s today, downsizing to just one team.

Ed counts on the help that Dell offers each day in daily routines, Dell helps feed, groom, and harness the horses both at the race track and at home. When Ed raced two outfits, Dell drove the second hook to the infield while Ed raced one outfit, then Ed would switch with Dell and Dell would drive the just-raced team to cool them down while Ed raced the second outfit. Now that is team work.

Two trophy cabinets full of trophies, wall covered in plaques, 15-20 trophy buckles and 47 years of complete records of prize money and time sheets of every race attended. So well-kept are the records that last night when asked what the winning times were in 1971-73, Dell had the answer faster than records on a computer!

Ed trained his own horses for many years. He started training in the fall and continued through the winter in preparation for the following spring and race season.

The last few years Ed has not trained his own horses but elects to leave this for the “Younger Crowd.” Not that many years ago he stopped doing his own training.

In all the years of racing he has only injured one horse.changes. In the future he hopes to purchase better outfits--both horses and equipment to keep up with the competition. Pedigree or conformation was not important in the beginning but with modern day communication it has become considerably easier to resource refined and proven horses.

Winning seems more important now.

Tracks have improved immensely. Today›s tracks are well groomed and maintained with fair boards and committees constantly trying to improve tracks and conditions.

Original tracks were either grass or a path made by a grader over as level a ground as could be found and eye balling curves to make them at the right angel and even.

Patricia and Hand Hills still are grass tracks and Paradise Valley is still as a hill on the third corner. Helmets and protective vests were unheard of in the beginning, but are becoming much more common, especially with the younger crowd.

Original chariots were made of wood and angle iron or perhaps a reconstructed 45 gallon barrel. The outfits did a figure 8 around the steel barrels then ran the track the same as is done today. These metal barrels were replaced heavy cardboard material and steel rims top and bottom; although an improvement the cardboard barrel did not collapse easily and in the 1980’s these were replaced with plastic collapsible plastic barrel liners, which is what you see today.

Inside and outside rails were not heard of in 1960, but now all tracks have inside and outside rails.

Ed always drove a chariot never a wagon. Ed still brings chariot team to the track, harness’ and feeds them with the help of Dell. Ed drives the team to the infield to wait for his outfit’s turn to race. When this time arrives he has a very capable young driver, Allan Bengston, from Falun, Alberta race the team around the track.

After the race is over, Ed jumps back in the chariots and cools the excited horses down before taking them back to the camp.

Some of the challenges are keepi n g u p w i t h t h e w o r k t o c a r e fo r t h e e q u i n e f r i e n d s , t r av e l l i n g t o and from races, and setting up and tearing down camp. Even so, the Buchmeiers do it all themselves and thanks to the close knit family of chuckwagon and chariot drivers, someone will always run the race for Ed and Dell, as like most chuckwagon and chariot drivers, it is just as much fun looking after the horses as racing them. In 1967 Ed never dreamed he would race for 47 years.

When racers had much more modest living accommodation at the track each night a big bon fire was built where everyone gathered to roast hot dogs and marshmallows, join in a sign along, visit and have a good time.

Health permitting Ed and Dell Buchmeier will be back in 2015 to race a chariot with the Alberta Professional Chuckwagon and Chariot Association.

Dell provided this information from her well kept records about the Vermilion Fair Chariot races: Ed won the chariot races at the fair in Vermilion in 1971, 72, & 73 and in 1972, 73, and 75. He placed first and second with his 2 chariot teams. In 1971 there was only 2 days racing. In 1972, Ed’s 3 day average/aggregate was 2.29.22 (times are measured in 1/100 of a second) The fast times in 2014 was 1.80.23. Yes things have changed, speeded up, safetied up, expanded in all directions. Ed was Alberta›s High Point Chariot for 6 consecutive years from 1972-1977.

Rural communities are invited to compete for a share of $250,000 from UFA Co-operative Ltd. (UFA) as the second Get ’n’ Give contest gets underway. Founded in 1909, UFA Co-operative Limited is an Alberta-based agricultural co-operative with more than 120,000 member-owners.

Community projects will be awarded $ 5 0,0 0 0 i n a p ay- i t- fo r war d s t y l e contest. Last year, UFA selected the first community followed by each subsequent winner selecting the next community project. From more than 350 applications, Hussar, Foremost, Spruce View, Hand Hills and Marwayne were

The Vermilion Voice | September 8, 2014 Expla nation For E m er gency Vehicles At JR Robson School “There was no emergency, just a little water to clean up,” Darren Grosky, Vice Principal of JR Robson school reported September 5. Students were evacuated and fire and gas trucks were seen parked outside the school with the lights flashing.

So what happened? A fire alarm went off in the kitchen for an unknown reason.

The cause was investigated by the fire department and the ATCO Gas. “The students were evacuated in a safe and efficient manner,” Grosky explained.

Fearless—The Art of Joan Blamire

“It’s really messy,” said Joan Blamire of her favourite painting technique. “You can relax while you mess up the painting, and you can watch it go through several changes. I think that the Fearless technique is for everyone.”

Blamire explained the process. “Using rollers—not brushes, and water, you first apply a base, then you put great gobs of colour on top, spray water on it, tip the canvas, swish the water around and watch what happens.”

experience. You can paint on a table, on the floor, wherever you choose, as long as the canvas is flat.

“What makes the technique new and exciting is that the painting changes constantly, and with it, the creative process.”

Blamire will be teaching a Fearless course in January with the Vermilion Community Art Club.

“Painting reflects your mood. Each piece is unique.” She explained while she showed her work currently on exhibit at the Vermilion Public Library.

Blamire has been living in the Vermilion area since the eighties. She began exploring her artistic vein at Lakeland College’s

stained glass course.

Today she focuses on painting but continues with her stained glass works.

Blamire participates in the monthly “Paint till you faint” program at JR Robson School. There, artists get a chance to discuss techniques, share questions, and solve problems.

The Vermilion Community Art Club exhibits the work of its members at Wenditos Restaurant in Lakeland Mall. “You don’t have to be a Picasso to try painting. Beginner classes are for everyone; age and background do not matter,” said Blamire.

Everyone is welcome at the Art Club for our watercolour, oil, and Fearless beginner courses in January.

Vermilion Community Art Club members also get a chance to display commercially each year. The Vermilion Community Art Club supports local artists and helps them grow. “We don’t start painting to sell,”

Blamire explained. “We do it because we love it.”

Innisfree Hotel Holds 13th annual Bike-a-Thon The Innisfree Hotel hosted the thirteenth annual Bike-A-Thon in support of the Innisfree Delnorte School. This year saw 11 riders take part in the 16 kilometre ride of hills and valleys along Highway 870. This year riders had to be wary of the paving crews working on upgrading the surface of the roadway and semis hauling asphalt.

Yaceyko, who also had a reception and four tackles, took a shot to the kidneys later in the quarter and sat out the rest of the game. Rookie Carter Usenik took over the kick-off duties and equaled Yaceyko’s tackle total as well as picking off a pass.

Second-year back Brayden Chilibeck scored the other Marauder major with no time showing on the clock at the end of the half. The touchdown came on the Marauders’ longest drive of the afternoon. Yaceyko brought the kick off to the Raider 50. Quarterback Colton Katuski, in his first full game as

pivot, got 5 tough yards on the fir st d own, then handed it to Chilibeck who found room and got to the 20. Katuski got another 6, but the Marauders ended up first and goal from the one when the Raiders were flagged for unnecessary roughness.

Af ter being stopped twice and losing a couple of yards, Chilibeck appeared to be stopped at the line of scrimmage but pushed through for t h e s c o r e. H e h a d 3 3 yards on the day. He also added two tackles.

Katauski also rushed for 33 and added another 27 in the air going three for 10. O ther of fensive h i g h l i g ht s wer e r e c e p tions for rookies Braden Maida and Noah Sanson.

On the defensive side,

Devon Winter knocked down a couple of Raider pass attempts and had two tackles. Also with two tackles were Scott Zielinski, Ryley Bates and Maida.

Jeremiah Ball had three tackles.

The Marauders won’t play at home until Sept. 19. Their next game is in Westlock.

Points after: In a dubious move, the Wheatland League chose to have Tier 1 & 2 play each other twice in “exhibition games” to balance the schedule instead of home and home games versus their own tier opponents…The Marauders are scheduled to play a second exhibition game against St. Paul, last year’s league runner-up…

The Marauders dressed two dozen players, while the Holy Rosary team had 56 players listed on their roster.

Junior B Tigers Training Camp Announced Nicole Crossan Reporter

The training camp from September 12 to 14 usually brings out around 40 to 50 players. This year, many of the oldest players from last year have moved on so many of the players will be moving up from last year’s Midget team.

The top 25 players will be picked based on their ability to adapt to the faster, more physically charged game,

and new style of play at the Junior B level.

This is the second year for Durwin Selte, Coach of the Junior B Tigers who commented, “I have learned a lot this past year. Our team placed 6th over 9 teams. So we were at the bottom level.” He later added, “ We came out hard and ran out of gas at the end.” Sometimes it takes a trial experience to teach how to succeed in the end.

Sean McGrath Farm Wins National Environmental Stewardship Award Submitted

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) is pleased to announce Round Rock Ranching of Alberta as the 2014 recipient of The Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA).

The fif th- generation family farm near Vermilion, Alber ta is operated

by Sean McGrath along with his wife Tanya and their three children in partnership with Sean’s parents, Fred and Anne McGrath.

“There are 3 simple core principle that guide our operation: •Respect Land and Life, they are the same thing •Do Right, Do It Right (the Dudley’s) •Learn What You Do, Do What You Learn – Love What You Do, Do What You Love These core principles speak to our operation and approach to ranching.”

The McGrath family received the natio nal ho nour in Char lot tetown, Prince Edward Island, in a special event following the CCA’s 2014 SemiAnnual Meeting and Town Hall.

In accepting the TESA , Sean McGrath thanked the other provincial environmental stewardship award winners and fellow TESA nominees for inspiring him to do more.

“To be totally honest with you I’m going to steal a whole bunch of ideas and take them home,” he said.

CCA Environment Commit tee Vice Chair Bob Lowe presented the McGrath’s with a $1,000 cheque and an engraved belt buckle.

“The McGraths have demonstrated a thoughtful and strategic approach to stewardship that has resulted in significant benefits to the land as well as the operation’s bottom line.”

Round Rock Ranching was selected for, among other things, implementing innovative techniques, like various offsite watering systems, while practicing beneficial management practices, resulting in outstanding environmental stewardship. Stewardship on tame pasture stands, for instance, has extended stand life and allowed

for significantly increasing and maintaining production on those lands with limited inputs. The ranch has also adopted practices such as bale grazing, the use of portable wind fence, and fuel efficient vehicles for daily operations to reduce energy use and costs.

Winter feeding methods also significantly reduce electrical demands on the ranch. Numerous recycling efforts have been implemented for t wine, used oil containers, used oil, and old wire.

Located on the northern fringe of the Battle River valley and adjacent e s c ar p m e nt , R o u n d R o c k R a n c h ing consists of 2,000 acres of owned, leased and rented ground. Approximately 80 per cent of the home ranch is on native rangeland, with the goal being to graze year-round.

The ranch runs an Angus-based cowherd with calving in May/June.

Currently the ranch is breeding between 150 and 200 females. Round Rock Ranching has tame pasture and native habitats, including remnant native parkland and riparian wetland and creek habitats. “ You’re commit ted to it because you’ve seen your parents and your grandparents work and struggle at it and your connection to the land is there because it’s been important to you and the generations before,” Sean said of his dedication to the environment.

With an 80 percent native land base Sean picks breeds that fit the land rather than trying to force the land to produce for the cattle. The emphasis on timing of grazing is what they attribute to the success of the ranch.

Employing various winter grazing techniques like swath and bale grazing has worked to reduce fuel, time and money.

“The change has just been in the management of it… coaxing nature along and letting her do her thing, she can do amazing things if you let her,” said Sean.

Sean works closely with groups like Alternative Land Use Ser vices and Cows & Fish to provide environmental and educational benefits for their

operation and to be shared with the public. Through the projects done with these groups riparian areas are thriving and providing wildlife habitats, carbon sequestration and biodiversity preservation.

“From a bigger picture across our whole ranch… should our kids chose to ranch, I would like to see our place in better condition than it is today,” said Sean.

Specific landscape goals include shifting species composition on native r a n g e l a n d towar d s fe s c u e / w h e atgrass/needlegrass dominated stands where the landscape permits, eliminating overgrazing and improving riparian habitat and ecosystem function.

Some of the goals are accomplished through their research projects, which include: Dung Beetle research, grass cages, bale grazing, and rake bunching.

This vision is the guiding lens through which all operational decisions are viewed and assessed.

The process involves environmental monitoring and follow up in order to establish a baseline and ensure that the operation is working towards environmental sustainability.

Miss Almberg started our senior high volleyball girls off early this school year, allowing them to get in some extra practice before they headed off to Provost for their first tournament last weekend. If you would like to watch our girls in action, they will be having a game here at the school against Innisfree on September 10th. The girls are then off to MEGA Volleyball in Vermilion on the weekend. Playing this year are

GoVERNMENT Vegreville - Wainwright Constituency Report From the REcoRd oF HElPHill I N G STU d E NT S SUccEEd As summer comes to a close and classes are about to resume, I would like to take this opportunity to advise students in the constituency of some of the measures introduced or improved by our Conservative Government – in Budget 2014 and past budgets – to help ease the financial burden of post-secondary education and better prepare students for the transition into the job market. canada Student loan Program Under our conservative watch, the Canada Student Loan Program has expanded its eligibly and funding by investing 34 million yearly into the program, once fully implemented. The Canada Student Loan Program provides financial assistance for post-secondary students who demonstrate financial need. The program is administered in conjunction with provincial/ territorial student loan programs. Therefore, a student will be considered automatically for this program when applying to their provincial student assistance program.

As a part of Economic Action Plan 2014, our Government is proposing to eliminate the value of student-owned vehicles from the Canada Student Loans Program assessment process. This means that students will no longer receive less financial aid as a result of owning a car. This mechanism was in place for almost twenty years and our government is proud to eliminate this barrier for students who need a vehicle to attend post-secondary school.

Canada Grants Aside from loans, our Conservative Government has implemented numerous grants which do not have to be repaid.

Students are automatically accessed for these grants when they are approved for a Canada Student Loan. These grants include: -Grant for Part-Time Studies: up to $1,200 per year; -Grants for Part-Time Students with Dependents: $40 a week (two dependents); $60 a week (three or more dependents); -Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities: up to $8,000 a year; - Grant for Students from Low-Income Families: $250 per month of study; -Grant for Students from Middle-Income Families: $100 per month of study; and -Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities: up to $2,000 per year. assistance for apprentices For those seeking a career in a designated Red Seal trade, our government offers two grant opportunities: the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant and the Apprenticeship Completion Grant. The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) helps new apprentices get started by providing a taxable cash grant up to a maximum of $2,000 per person for registered apprentices who have

completed their first or second year/level (or equivalent) training. The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) assists apprentices who have completed their program and are now working towards becoming certified journeypersons by providing a $2,000 taxable cash grant.

Additionally, Economic Action Plan 2014 expands the Canada Student Loans Program to include apprentices registered in a Red Seals trade. This will provide aspiring Red Seal certified skills workers with over $100 million in interest-free loans each year.

Transitioning into the Job Market Job Bank Students who have graduated or are looking to narrow their career path may find our Government’s newly-enhanced Job Bank useful as well. Not only does the database allow you to search for available employment opportunities across the country, but newly enhanced functions allow the user to explore career paths via education programs, wages, outlook and skill. I encourage all students to visit the Job Bank website when searching for and exploring employment opportunities.

FLOORING IN THE LIVING ROOM. WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS?

A: From my experience I see a lot of discolored flooring due to direct

sunlight exposure. Generally linoleum and hardwood floors are affected the most by the sun. My guess is that the damage is in a living or dining room with a set of patio doors or floor to ceiling windows with south facing exposure. The sun is very powerful so if you have large windows where the sun can pour in on the floor I suggest you take precautions to prevent sun bleaching. In some products such as linoleum I have seen the sun turn the light colored product dark read. If the floor is a stained hardwood product it could make the floor lighter. In particular if there is an area carpet on the hardwood it will show a distinctive line where the carpet is. The long and short of it is to be sure to block the direct sunlight from hitting the floor.

The Vermilion Public Library was pleased with the success of this summer’s reading program. We made some significant changes to our program in an effort to improve the experience of participants, and are hoping it leads to even greater success in following years as we work to smooth the process.

This year’s summer reading program was tracked online with the majority of participants logging minutes that they read and choosing their own rewards from their home computers. As well as earning on-line badges and rewards, children could choose coupons as they reached certain milestones. The library handed out 107 coupons from the following local businesses: Apple Drugs, Boston Pizza, Long’s Value Drugs, Tim Horton’s, Sammy’s Family Restaurant, East-Alta COOP, The Bargain Shop, and Subway.

an impressive 20,481 reading minutes.

Everyone who logged reading minutes was entered into a draw for one of three grand prizes, and the lucky winners received book bags with educational gifts inside.

This year the library also offered children the chance to play our summer reading game for fun and the chance to win prizes.

An exciting spin of the roulette wheel sent participants around the game board, where they completed short tasks to earn the chance to spin again.

It was very popular to spin the wheel and the submissions from the children brightly decorated an entire wall of the Library.

The summer reading program benefits from the generosity of local businesses and contributions from TD bank and the Northern Lights Library System, and we would like to take this chance to thank them for their support of youth literacy in Vermilion.

The first few days of school was abuzz with back-to-school events: school pictures, the first assembly of the year, Pirate Crew nominations electing student council members, hand printing on the pirate crew walls, home-room class orientation, locker assignments, and more.

The cafeteria has started up, offering snacks and drinks, and soon also daily-prepared hot lunches to students and staff. The fresh-made lunches are made by Mrs. Hart’s Foods 30 chefs, Devon Eyben, Shjon M oneta, and Jessica Niedielski. Speaking of food, just a friendly reminder that J. R. Robson School is a nut-aware school. Students asked to be selective and careful of what they bring and eat; this year there are several students with severe nut allergies.

Miss Felt, career counsellor, took time to speak with senior high students about the Work Experience program which offers them the potential to earn credits while holding part-time jobs. Students who are interested may see Miss Felt for information and forms.

Marauder athletes have already begun working up a sweat this season as the cross-country team laps the Provincial Park, the football team played their first game in Lloydminster, and volleyball practice starts up. If anyone is interested in coaching any of the six (wow!) eager and excited junior high volleyball teams, let us know! Miss Chapman, one of our physical education teachers, is willing to do the organizing and managing; we just need someone to do the fun part!

Welcome back students and staff to another school year at St. Jerome’s. The hallways were full of bright eager faces on Thursday, August 28th as students entered for the first day of school. We would especially like to welcome all the new families, students and our two new staff members, Lindsey McDermott, teaching grade one and Ted Wheat, teaching grade seven. We are sad to say good-bye to Mrs. Judy Zeller and wish her an amazing retirement.

Operation Education is the program developed by Boston Pizza, which supports local schools. It is a co-operative fundraising program that is as simple as eat, save and submit! During the redemption period, St. Jerome’s asks the lo c al c ommunit y to save receipts from purchases at Boston Pizza restaurants throughout Northern Alber ta and submit them to St. Jerome’s.

At the beginning of Februar y, St. Jerome’s will submit their totals to Boston Pizza, and in turn, Boston Pizza will donate 5% of the pre-tax total of submitted receipts back to the school.

The O peration Education redemp tion period for this fundraiser is from September 1, 2014 through January 31, 2015.

The Sr. B oys and Girls participated at King’s College Tournament in Edmonton. The JV Girls played in Marwayne this past weekend. The Jr. High Boys were at Holy Rosary on Saturday.

The Jr. High Golf team traveled to Wainwright on Thursday, September 4, for the annual ECACS Jr. High Tournament. The students had a wonderful day of golf and each represented our school with great spirit and sportsmanship.

The Jr. High team members are Jesse Rogan, Austin Patry, Carson Rogers, Connor Bardoel, Cameron Bar tley, Adam Howard, and Tanner Bibeau.

Students are encouraged to dress in bright colours as we celebrate “Neon Day” our first “Spirit Day” on Wednesday, 10. There is no school for students on Friday, September 19 and Monday, September 22 as these are PD days for staff. St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Supper will be held on Thursday, September 25.

The Graduating Class of 2015 has already begun fundraising for their big event. This fall they are selling fall flower bulbs and Mom’s Pantry. Please contact a graduating student or the school for further details.

Myrnam/Derwent Memorial Golf Tournament

The first Memorial Golf Tournament took place in 1988 at the Myrnam/ Derwent Golf Course. Fifty golfers golfed at the August 31 tournament last weekend, which marked its 26th year.

The Gazebo at the Myrnam & Derwent Golf Course that was built in 2013: “In Memory of our deceased members who were dedicated to the continued success of the Myrnam/Derwent Golf and Country Club,” is a type of epitaph for the annual Memorial Golf Tournament.

In the gazebo are memorial plaques to: Lynn McCormack, Johnny Mudryk, Ev Lawrence, Orest Krywiak, Ellen Krywiak, David Martins, Brenda (Mudryk) Ainsley, Victor Balash, Elder Axley, and Julia McMillan.

A spokesperson for each of these former members talked about some of their fondest memories at the pre-Memorial Golf Tournament service.

The first memorial team Kenny, Ev Lawrence, and Dennis Rewuski started this tournament for Lynn McCormack, who died of cancer at the young age of thirty eight. Dennis stated, “The memories are something you cannot replace.

It is etched in our minds. Some of my... fondest memories are not actual golfing.

It’s the socializing afterwards.”

Lois Rewuski continued, “It’s been 25 years since we’ve started so we’ve grouped a few people together. Kenny, Dennis, Frank, and Lynn were the foursome that golfed together. They were known as the Clandonald Crew at the time, so the beginning Memorial Golf Tournament was actually called the Clandonald Golf Tournament and that was

when we first came and started golfing together.

As time passed we lost more people that we loved and we wanted to have something to remember them by. Lynn, being the first one, was probably looking down from heaven saying, ‘What the heck? How did that start?’ Because that would be the farthest thing from his mind.”

Kenny Jr. said, “I have a memory of Lynn McCormack. One day we were playing a game of baseball out in the field. I had just gotten a new baseball bat for my birthday. Lynn gets up to bat and takes a swing at the ball and busts my bat right in

half. I just burst into tears and Lynn was gracious enough to take me back to the hardware store on Monday and buy a brand new bat for me.”

Orest Krywiak and all the work he did to help out around the golf course was spoken about. One story told about him was about when the woods were being changes to metal drivers. Orest bought a Taylormade metal driver to try one out when Taylormades were pretty expensive. He didn’t like the tinging sound, so after a couple weeks golfing, he drilled a hole in the back and filled it with foam. The first time out there, he hit the ball about 75 yards out there and he looks at me and says, ‘I think this was a pretty expensive experiment. Don’t tell Ellen.’ Orest was an easygoing guy. They were a big part of this community. They are dearly missed.

The memorial service was closed by Dennis Rewuski with an Irish Blessing.

The Tournament was won by a larger team than expected with a score of 61 points. The team members were: David

and Debbie Hawryluk, Tom and Don Mudryk, Dwayne Yaremekavich, and Morgan Renaud. The prize money was donated to the Sara Kirk Fundraiser that will take place next weekend.

The winning team member, Debbie Hawryluk, announced her $100 donation to the Sara Kirk fundraiser.

“It’s been fifty years since the golf course was first started. It started with just three holes and they were all mowed by hand,” Dennis Rewuski recalled. Elmer Halaschuk remembered using his dad’s truck to pull out stumps and roots. All would agree that club members have a special place in their heart for each of the people whose memorial plaque has been placed in the gazebo.

In 1964, “Roger McMillan and 6-8 other members decided to get some land, clear it, and build a golf course. They started out with three holes, progressed to five and slowly built up to the nine holes they have today. Roger McMillan was one of the original crew who dedicated time, effort, and equipment to the cause,” Elmer Halaschuk said.

It was fitting, then, that the biggest 50th anniversary celebration took place at the Roger McMillan Tournament. This anniversary was celebrated throughout the year at other tournaments at the Myrnam/Derwent Golf Course, including the Aug 31 Memorial Tournament.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted Many VES staff members immersed themselves in the ALS Challenge after being challenged by Mr. Beecroft. On Sept. 2, the fire department was on hand with their truck and water hose to provide a soaking to the staff, while our students looked on and cheered.

Accelerated Reading has started again for the year. The website is https://hosted70. renlearn.com/743515/ and there is also a link on the school website (ves.btps.ca with no www). The best site to check and see whether or not books are a part of the Accelerated Reading program is arbookfind.com/default.aspx and there is a link on our website for this site as well. Quizzing can be done at school or at home and is available daily from 7:30am until 8:00pm.

Homeroom teachers will help set personal goals, classroom goals, and also an entire school goal.

Intramural activities are a fun and exciting way to learn new games and skills, as well as play with students from different grades and age levels. We offer a variety of activities throughout the year: Mini-Canley (K-3) and Canley (4-6) in Sept/Oct; Speed Stacking in Nov; X-Country Skiing in Dec/ Jan; Floor Curling in Feb/Mar; Skipping in April; LEGO activities in May; and Soccer in June. All students are welcome to join.

Division 1 (K- 3) student intramural days will be Monday and Wednesday while Division 2 (4-6) will be on Tuesday and Thursday.

Fridays are flexible and are dependent on the needs of the program.

Watch for which clubs are being offered throughout the year as well. Mrs. McCullough and Mrs. Joa have already started the Cross-Country Running Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:35-4:15.

The season will run from Sept. 2 – Oct. 2 for grade 4-6 students. Within that time frame, there are at least three (possibly four) races that athletes may choose to enter. Students

will have the opportunity to run in Riverdale, Vermilion and Lloydminster. Run Jaguars run!

VES is also pleased to be offering afterschool volleyball again this year. From Sept.

9 – Oct. 22, Mr. Faull will run the club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from about 3:40 until about 4:40. Each student will sign up for one day only to keep our numbers manageable.

Mr. Faull and Mr. Haslehurst have a group of grade five school patrollers who were trained in grade four, and a group of returning patrollers in grade six. VES is very proud of these students who have committed to getting here a bit early and/or staying a little late to help their schoolmates get to school and get home safely.

Our breakfast program is once again up and running. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nutritious breakfast items are served from the school kitchen. We graciously accept donations and volunteer help to keep our breakfast program running. Please contact Sharleen Moses at the school if you would like to help out in any way.

Jim Prentice Wins the Leadership Race Elina Castro Reporter

In what was a long, drawn out leadership race, overshadowed by the former government ’s mistakes, Jim Prentice has won the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta vote.

Prentice will be sworn in as Alberta’s 16th premier. For him, this is a new beginning, a time to restore trust in government.

With almost 77 percent of the vote, Prenti c e won easily in one ballot.

McIver took 12 percent, and Lukaszuk held on to 11 percent.

Since Prentice needs to earn a seat in the legislature, a byelection will be called as soon as it is feasible.

A general election is slated for 2016.

The Canadian Antiques & Art Roadshow has once again invited Pat Pierson from Canadian Gold & Silver Exchange to be on site during the Vermilion show to provide free evaluation and appraisals of all gold and silver coins and Jewelry.

During the ROADSHOWS recent stop in Vegreville a couple came in with two tobacco cans full of silver coins that had been sitting around their house for over thirty years and decided it was a great opportunity with the Roadshow in town to see what they were worth.

The two cans of coins contained dimes, quarters, fifty cent pieces and silver dollars and while looking over each coin Pat discovered a rare 1921 American Morgan Silver Dollar from the Carson City mint worth a cool $1,200.00 and one 1948 Canadian Silver dollar worth $1,800.00 and two Canadian dot dimes dated 1947 with a current value of $4,375.00.

The rest of the coins where worth $460.00 at the bank but because they all where silver coins Pat purchased them and paid close to Two Thousand Dollars.

With current prices of gold and silver Pat says many folks wish to cash in and do something with their money and not sit around waiting for the prices to drop or worse yet someone break into their home and steal them.

We see more and more people coming into the roadshow with not only their antiques but gold jewelry as well reports Pat. People are just amazed at the amount of money they receive for just a small hand full of old, broken or unused jewelry that has been sitting around for years just gathering dust.

But some of the gold that comes into the roadshow is a little iffy to handle as it has been in someone’s mouth.

That’s right dental gold such as caps, filings and bridges all contain good gold that usually is 14 carat or 18 carat.

Now that brings me to another important fact when appraising jewelry. Most gold jewelry is made of 10,14, 18, or 22 carat gold and each piece needs to be carefully examined to determine its true amount of gold and then weighed individually to find its value.

As a precious metal buyer I have spent over 40 of my 62 years on earth in this industry and even after all these years I still once in a while uncover something so rare and precious that takes my breath away, and such was the case during a stop in Terrace BC where a gentleman came into my event with a bag of silver and gold coins he wanted to sell but I noticed his cane and asked if I could look at it.

The cane was made out of English Oak and carved with ships sailing the seas but the handle was made out of 24 carat solid gold and had thirty rubies and thirty diamonds in it.

After evaluating the gold and precious gems and the age of the cane, I and the staff from the Roadshow valued it at $100,000.00.

When asked if he wished to sell he replied he needed it to walk and with a smile he left.

I and the Roadshow staff look forward to what discoveries we will uncover during our two day event at the Super 8 Hotel in Vermilion.
