Lakeland Funeral Home Holds Benefit Barbeque

A sizzling hot barbeque was held on Thursday, August 28 in the parking lot of Lakeland Funeral Home to benefit the program Haying in the 30s. The Hill Billy Boys entertained in the earlier part of the evening with lots of laughs and great music.

The Voice found Lakeland Funeral Home Manager, Candice Traver, serving cold

drinks. We asked what had inspired her to hold a party for Haying in the 30s. “They have supported so many families that we thought we’d bring the community together and give back.”

Traver expressed gratitude to her employees and friends, and in particular to recently retired Minister Keith Marsh for his continued assistance.

Jim and Louise Storch were on hand serving burgers and smokies. When the

Voice discovered that Jim Storch is the son of Ed Storch, he was quickly required to comment on what inspired him to become a Funeral Director. Jim Storch simply replied, “Some people say it’s my calling.”

Discover, Experience, Celebrate Alberta Culture Days September 26 To 28 Reporter

In this issue, the Voice discribes the exciting events planned for Alberta Culture Days on Saturday, September 27. We will keep you posted on updates and scheduling changes.

Saturday, September 27 begins with scrumptious pancakes for breakfast at Fire Hall from 8:00 till 10:00 a.m.

CL ASS will be hosting a Willow Creation class from 9 till 4 p.m.

From 9 till noon, the Vermilion Pottery Guild will hold a “Fun with Clay” event for kids aged 10 and over in their facilities at the airport terminal building.

You may join the fun and make a pushin plate, mug or whatever inspires you.

There will be a display of finished work.

If Mom or Dad wish to join you, they are welcome too.

From 2 till 4 p.m. the Guild will hold its Open House. Join Guild members for coffee and goodies, watch demonstrations of hand building and wheel throwing.

There will be memberships available.

Also from 9 till noon, Heartworks Studio will be demonstrating the art of Batik painting on cloth.

Batik is the method of using wax (they use soy wax) as a resist, and fiber reactive dyes as a means of acquiring a design on cloth. There will be samples of work on display as well.

From 10 till noon the Vermilion Elementary School will host “Touch of Brass,” from the Vermilion Adult Handbell Choir.

They will do a short demonstration for any adults who would like to try their hand at playing the bells. Come out, have fun and learn the basics of ringing! Some basic music reading skills would be helpful but not required.

Also at Vermilion Elementary School from 10 to noon, Raptor Taekwondo invites you to watch a training demonstration led by instructor and 4th degree Black belt, Greg Haslehurst. Each class consists of aerobic activity, stretching, performing kicking, blocks and hand attacks. Physical fitness, focus, self discipline, and personal development are taught through the systematic training of Taekwondo techniques.

Ever wanted to learn how to trim a tree or shrub properly? If so, join Jared Fehr from 10:30 a.m. till 4 p.m. at the CN Station in the Vermilion Provincial Park. For only $60 you will learn to keep your trees and shrubs looking healthy and beautiful.

Are you starving yet? Not a problem.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the Alberta Culture Days Committee has planned a FREE Beef on a Bun lunch barbeque by the Vermilion Heritage Museum with live music by the band “Detour” as well as Cadets and knife making, all along the

Heritage Museum street. Following, there will be a local showcase of dance, drama and music at the Alumni Hall.

The Vermilion Community Art Club is holding a beginner’s watercolor workshop.

It will be instructed by watercolourist and club member Bonnie Luopa from 1 till 4:00 p.m. at J.R. Robson High School Art Room.

Camping Etiquette and Fire Building class will be taught by Gary Walsh, Conservation Officer, in the camp kitchen across from the CN Station from 1 till 3 p.m.

At the Armoury, there will be Martial Arts moves with Kuksool Won from 10 till noon, and later in the afternoon, a session on Ham Radio skills, plus a cadet tour and activities. From 3 till 5 p.m. you may hone your Archery skills with the Vermilion River Archers.

The tour of the Lakeland College Centre for Sustainable Innovation (CSI) and the Applied Research Site will be about 2 hours long. Details of the tour are forthcoming.

If bird watching is your thing, there will be nature walking and birds with the Naturalist Club. Details will follow.

From 10 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. while some of you are busy wool spinning, rug hooking and knife-making in the Heritage Museum,

all around you, along the museum street, and next door, there will be a Car Show and Shine. Within that time, MLA Dr. Richard Starke will make a formal introduction of the Heritage Mural.

At the Library, there will be a quilt display for a two-week period and from 1 till 4 p.m. there will be hands-on demonstrations. Quilters will be hand- quilting, and demonstrating English Paper Piecing, and yo-yo making. There will also be an interactive activity with quilt blocks and a design wall so people can design their own quilts.

From 1:30 till 3:00 p.m. aquatics moves with Early Childhood Coalition at the pool.

Also from 1:30 till 3:00 p.m. Dave of Noralta Jiu Jitsu will be doing low speed technical demos and self defense techniques in the Mall.

From 2 till 4:00 p.m. Robert McFadzean and Audrey Chesterman are hosting a Family History Workshop. Audrey will be explaining local resources in Vermilion and Alberta. McFadzean will be showing what is available on the Family Search website and helping participants try it out.

The Girl Guides will be camping in the provincial park during the weekend. From 3 till 5 p.m. there will be singing, crafts and games – the theme will be “Around Canada.” Feel free to join them at Group

Area B (near the soccer fields) to see what being a Guide is all about.

At the same time, the Scouts will meet at the train station in the park for a traditions and skills event.

Dance Impressions is giving free dance classes for the week of September 22 to 27. This means Monday to Friday and all day Saturday. Miss Ryan is an enthusiastic supporter of Alberta Culture Days and will be going out to surrounding schools and teaching students some moves for the parade on Sunday. Miss Ryan is a Parade Marshall, and she will be Stage Director for the Saturday evening Showcase of the Arts at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Theatre.

Here is your chance to do some stargazing at the CN Station in the Provincial Park. Join local astrophotographer Rob Baron from 7:30 till 9 p.m. for an evening of tips and techniques for capturing stunning images of the night sky. You will learn how to photograph the milky way and stars, aurora and lighting, moon and astrological objects, and create animations for only $35.

The Vermilion Folk Club is hosting a performance by Chloe Albert at 8 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion.

The day closes with a showing of the film: “Change of Heart” at 9 p.m. in the Alumni Theatre.

Labour Day Motto: “Eight Hours Work, Eight Hours Leisure, Eight Hours Rest”

Do you work at least eight hours a day? Then Labour Day celebrates You. And rest assured that it celebrates us every year, all year around.

New Zealand’s Labour Day takes place in October, and in neighbouring Australia, the various states celebrate on different dates within that month.

If you are in Bangladesh, you will be taking time off in April. And in the Bahamas (Do people actually work in the Bahamas?) Labour Day takes place in June.

May Day, on the first day of May, is widely observed in Europe and Latin America.

In Argentina and Brazil May Day is blessed with huge parades, tantalizing foods, superb music and, it being late fall, perfect weather.

As of late, some of the parades have turned violent in suppor t of higher wages and better benefits for the workers. It is a shame that the erstwhile happy May Day celebrations have turned sour.

In Chile, the day celebrates workers’ dignity, but in Cuba the parades and shows of support for the socialist government call on the entire island to

participate, willingly or not.

And the People’s Republic of China which used to liberate its working force for three days, has changed it to one day, presumably for economic reasons.

Perhaps the most unique Labour Day is Lei Day, celebrated in Hawaii with music, the hula, and Lei-making competitions. Theirs is a fragrant May 1. A Lei is the necklace of fresh flowers, vines and leaves worn on special occasions such as birthdays, weddings and graduations. Visitors usually receive a lei on arrival in Hawaii.

In Canada, Labour Day or Fête du Travail was inspired by the Toronto Printers’ union strike of 1872 when

trade unions were illegal.

Prime Minister John A. Macdonald, an astute observer of the human condition, took charge of the situation, made a political decision, and by June, 1872 the Trade union Act was law.

And that is how an act of civil disobedience yielded a perfect holiday for us. I hope you have enjoyed the long weekend.

Letter To The Editor Summer is the time of year when Albertans and visitors to the province get out and enjoy our parks and lakes. For those who own and use watercraft, especially in lakes and waterways outside of Alberta, it’s important to think about what other things you could be bringing along for the ride.

In early August, provincial inspectors discovered two boats contaminated with zebra mussels making their way across Alberta borders. The boats from New York and Ontario were headed to Alberta waters, and unknowingly carrying zebra mussels. One of the boats was discovered at the boat inspection station located near Vermilion.

This summer, approximately 2,500 watercraft have been inspected for mu s se l s at in s p e c t i o n st at i o n s in Dunmore, Vermillion, Burmis and Coutts.

Inspections will continue until the end of

September.

Mussels are small but create big problems. Once in a waterbody, they are virtually impossible to eradicate and can cause millions of dollars in damage to irrigation and water treatment infrastructure and harm aquatic ecosystems.

It’s estimated that an infestation could cost Alberta $75 million a year. That’s too high a price for something that can be prevented.

The province will continue our fight against aquatic invasive species with our established inspection programs. We will also look for new opportunities to increase the odds of success, like the pilot project we participated in this season using highly trained dogs to sniff out zebra and quagga mussels on trailered watercraft.

Albertans care deeply about their water, both drinking and recreational.

Aquatic invasive species can jeopardize

Conservatives will not tolerate irresponsible senators Dear Editor, In response to M.P. Geoff Regan’s recent comments, I would like to reiterate that Prime Minister Harper and our Conservative Government do not tolerate irresponsible senators that misuse taxpayers’ money for personal gain. As soon as Senator Duffy was found to have misspent taxpayers money he was immediately removed from the Conservative caucus and later suspended from the Senate without pay.

We have assisted the RCMP throughout their investigation and congratulate them on the progress they have made. Those who break the rules must suffer the consequences. These facts are well known and will not change on the whim of others’ views

on the matter.

In contrast, the Liberal Party has a much different strategy concerning the conduct of irresponsible senators. Liberal Senator Mac Harb was never removed from the Liberal caucus despite his own negligent expense claims,and Liberal Senator Pana Merchant continues to sit in the Liberal Caucus despite her current foreign bank account expense scandal.

Where is Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s action to match Prime Minister Harper’s high ethical standard for public representatives?

The Liberal caucus clearly holds ethics to a much lesser standard than Prime Minister Harper and our Conservative Government.

Mr. Regan should be careful who calls the kettle black!

And just like that folks, we are staring at the end of August thinking … where the heck did that go? However the end of August is just the beginning for me.

The beginning of the best outdoor adventures for myself, and by the time you read this, I will most likely be Bowhunting or at the cabin at least, preparing for opening morning.

I have been so busy lately with so much on my mind I am forgetting everything, including my name if it wasn’t sewn in on my shirt, the last minute rush for opening day is in full swing and madness.

Shooters are breaking their bows as fast as I can fix them or set them up, some beyond belief with great repairs and lots of new parts, mostly by friends and relatives.

They want to draw the bows and the strings get away from them at full draw… which usually is done without an arrow on the bow and is called a “dry fire”, devastating to a bow.

All the energy that makes an arrow come out of the bow at 300 feet per second and faster, when there is no arrow, it has to go somewhere, so all that energy heads to the limb tips and explodes the strings right off the bow in most cases.

Now only does it destroy bow limbs, strings and other major parts but it can also hurt the shooter in more ways than one. It’s just not a great situation for anyone.

So that’s where I come in to literally pick up the pieces. I am in the shop until midnight some nights rebuilding these bows so the shooter can get out on opening morning.

Well, somewhere in between all that I

need to get myself ready also, I start early, months ahead on some things but always seem to fall behind in the mayhem.

So I am like busy like a bee, right up to opening day eve… then that first morning is exciting regardless of weather, animals seen, or anything that can happen on these adventures.

Next comes the first day evening hunt… most likely a 5-hour minimum sit in a treestand, but since we walked 15 km in the morning, it is best for the evenings, and that is also exciting.

During that first hour our eyes are wide open in anticipation, then comes the second hour. Honestly, all you can hear is the crickets chirping in the background … chirp …chirp.

By the third hour your brain and body go into shock. And that’s when you find yourself thinking: “Sheeesh, I’m bored”.

Then you shake your head for common sense.

This is what we wait all year for and work so hard for: the hustle and bustle of the mayhem comes to a screeching halt, so there is that transition point we have to go through.

It is then we realize we want to be bored, and its then we become more in tune of our wilderness surroundings, watching a Dragon Fly devour pesky mosquitos becomes an amazement.

We catch that leaf as it leaves the mother tree and gently floats to the ground, and we watch it all the way down and know where that leaf now sits; any animal is a clown of the circus, with their funny antics or simply something to admire.

The fresh air seems fresher, the silence is so quiet; movement is attention grabbing, fall scents are pleasing, and a slight breeze is noticed and calculated for animal sightings.

All our senses are at their maximum awareness, yet we are so relaxed

and stress free, slumped back in the stand enjoying the evening sunset …

AUUUUKK!!!!.

That’s when that big buck or bull walks into range under your stand, your heart is beating out of your chest, adrenaline pumps hard thru your entire body, then what happens … happens.

And once again all is still …except for every leaf of the big tree you are sitting in, as they dance to the beats of a still-beating heart and, if you are standing, your rubber legs make you sit.

And you sit there thinking …did that just happen? Well folks that, in a few words, is why we do what we do, and it is hard to put into words but is the lifetime memory in our adventures.

summer. They are no longer there, the little ones are flying already.

Even the Red Wing blackbirds that sat on the cattails, scolding me all summer are gone, their little ones also flying south and gone already, it’s just me and my Fruit loop addicted chipmunk left.

So it’s that time of the year again: Enjoy and be safe on the last long weekend of summer; it’s your last chance for big summer adventures so get out there, and I will be return in a couple of weeks with tales of my adventures.

In my early memories, I don’t rec all there being even one combine anywhere in this area.

The binder and threshing machine were the harvesting method of choice. Swathers weren’t considered feasible because of our uncertain fall weather and the idea of laying crop on the ground without a string around it so you could stock it and have it show up above the snow wasn’t popular. You could harvest stooks after it snowed.

My Dad certainly didn’t want anything to do with a combine. He wanted his crop threshed into a straw pile to feed his cattle.

He argued that once a combine dribbled the straw out on the ground, how were you to retrieve it, and all the weed seeds, light grain and chaff certainly would be a dead loss.

That’s why we pitched bundles well into the late fifties, and by that time combines had started to arrive. A few made the bind-

ers into a kind of swather that was not altogether that satisfactory. The concept of swathing wasn’t even that well received and there certainly wasn’t any chemical desiccation to dry the crop standing, as is so common now.

The first combines were little pull types with engines mounted to run them because there was no ‘live’ power takeoff and no tractor that could vary speeds to go slow enough so the little machines could handle any kind of capacity. Picture rubbing heads out with your hands and blowing the chaff away. It wouldn’t be much slower than those first little machines.

No wonder folks kept on with the old threshing machines. Fields were harvested with dispatch and there was that element of getting together with neighbours and working as a team. There were a lot of things going for the old way, but you know it was expensive to buy the twine and with the war, help was ever more difficult to find. Times were certainly changing.

I’ll never forget the time the Wolters family journeyed up to Grandpa Wilson’s at threshing time and were having supper

with his threshing crew. Uncle Woodrow was just back from the service and had the job of running Grandpa’s ‘Massey 21’ self-propelled combine. I don’t recall knowing the width of cut it would take, but it was probably around 12 to 14 ft.

Anyway, when the notes were compared, it was noted that Uncle Woodrow had harvested standing wheat and had emptied the grain tank by travelling to a granary.

There were no truck hoists and augers in those times, and Uncle Woodrow had single-handedly equalled or even slightly exceeded the production of a full threshing crew with a Red River Special threshing machine.

Even that story didn’t convince Dad. He still wanted his straw piles. Neighbours that had crewed our threshing outfit got machines of their own or went modern and started swathing and combining. Brother, and I, and Dad resigned to being a threeman crew hauling bundles in, starting the machine, unloading, shutting things off, and going out again. It takes a while to do a hundred acres that way. Remember we had to cut and stook too!

In 1957 or 1958, Dad found a little 100 Series Allis Chalmers self-propelled combine that had been at the dealership for a while and the man gave Dad a steal of a deal.

Dad just wouldn’t buy a machine with red paint on it and being a proud American didn’t think anything made in Canada could be any good. That combine was called “All Crop,” anything but wheat or coarse grain I’m thinking. It was so difficult to change concave setting or anything like that, but it did put grain in a bin without too much effort.

My goodness! When I see the machines now with their 40-foot tables and all the grain carts and B-trains to haul grain to storage it brings back memories of unloading trucks without hoists and the long tiresome hours of working alone. It sure did beat stooking and threshing for sure, though!

Flexxaire Parkinson Step’n Stride Walk Submitted

The countdown is on to the 2014 Flexxaire Parkinson Step ‘n Stride! Teams and individuals from Vermilion and the surrounding area are preparing to attend a Step’n Stride Walk to support research on Parkinson’s disease on Sunday, September 7th at the Bud Miller Park, Site 3 in Lloydminster.

Registration is at 10 a.m. and the walk starts at 11 a.m.

There will be a light breakfast available pre-walk and hamburgers and hotdogs afterwards. Prizes are given out to teams and individuals that raise the most money, and there will be activities for the children on site and more.

Parkinson Alberta has a strong, prominent support group in Lloyminster that meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 7-9 p.m. at Lakeland College.

A wise person acknowledges that nothing in this world, not even the good stuff, lasts forever. Our pen runs out of ink. Our car runs out of gas. And governments run out of time.

In 1971, when the Progressive Conservatives won a majority in the Legislative Assembly, the Honourable E. Peter Lougheed was sworn in as Premier. In him, we found a leader skilled in business matters, adept in the fine art of diplomacy, a man capable of understanding the depth and breadth of his responsibilities. High times for Alberta, a province rich in natural resources with a competent government seemingly equipped to manage its vast potential.

It was Lougheed who sought and secured more provincial control over Alberta’s resources. During his tenure as Premier (1971-1985), Albertans enjoyed a diversification of our economy, and an investment in

Alberta Shakes our collective future with the government’s commitment to establishing and maintaining high standards for our health, research, and recreational facilities. It was Lougheed, too, who pushed for the 1982 Constitution amendment that entrenched the formula requiring the agreement of seven provinces before any changes to the rules could be considered.

Perhaps most forward-thinking of all of Lougheed’s many accomplishments in Alberta was the establishment in 1976 of the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund.

The Fund was established and, at least initially, thirty percent of resource royalties paid to the province placed in long term investments in order to meet the challenges of “unanticipated future needs”. Like any wise money manager, Lougheed made calculated choices meant to guarantee the financial stability of the province for the generations that would follow.

It’s difficult to imagine that anyone disputes the claim that Lougheed exemplified what it means to lead. With his confidence and integrity, he certainly earned the respect of fellow politicians both provincially

and federally. Perhaps more importantly, he earned and retained the respect of Albertans. He stands out as possibly the best example of what, in a political context, it truly means to be ‘honourable’, and to be genuinely deserving of placing that word before his name.

These are different times, aren’t they?

Alberta remains a prominent presence on the Canadian landscape as well as the international one. The economy seems healthy.

Most of us enjoy a comfortable standard of living. People from all kinds of other places move here with hopes of sharing in a piece of the prosperity that defines Alberta.

But there’s been a fumble at the top.

We’re not entirely sure when it first occurred, but we know that it happened. Perhaps we were too busy enjoying our good lives to notice at first. We were revellers at a patio party on a bright sunshiny day, too delirious in our joy to observe the approach of menacing storm clouds.

Purportedly the wealthiest of all Canadian provinces and territories, Alberta currently carries a staggering debt load in the range of ten billion dollars, according

to calculations published by the Canadian Taxpayer Federation. Ten BILLION and rising. If thinking about the interest payable on a number like that leaves you a little unsteady, you’re not alone.

We’re a long, long way from that heady day in 2004 when then Premier Ralph Klein proudly held a sign above his head declaring the provincial debt Paid in Full. We’re a long, long way from the days of holding the elected Progressive Conservatives in reverential high regard, too. They’ve fumbled our collective security. Perhaps they’re worn out and need a rejuvenating retreat somewhere in the wilderness far away. Fortythree years is a long time for anything to remain relevant.

The simplest financial advice ever imparted might be summed up in four words: ‘live within your means’. We need a capable and responsible government whose leadership genuinely understands their meaning and can adhere to the fiscal philosophy within them. Let’s hope such an entity arrives soon.

AltaLink Sold To Berkshire Hathaway Energy Elina Castro Reporter

On July 25, 2014 the Federal Industry Minister, James Moore, announced the Canadian Government’s approval of the sale of energy company AltaLink to Berkshire Hathaway Energy, under the Investment Canada Act. “Foreign investment transactions are reviewed on their merits and the overall economic benefit to Canada. In making my determination, I carefully considered the plans, undertakings and other information submitted by the investor in light of the net benefit factors listed in the Act,” Minister Moore stated.

For its part, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, which is part of the Warren Buffet conglomerate, has agreed to a number of commitments such as making no reductions in the level of employment at AltaLink as a result

of the transaction.

AltaLink will remain locally managed and incorporated under the laws of Canada, with its headquarters, senior management team and operations located in Alberta.

AltaLink’s independent board of directors will also continue to be composed of a majority of Canadians.

One hundred percent of AltaLink’s earnings will be reinvested in AltaLink, elsewhere in Alberta or in other regions of Canada for at least five years.

This commitment will support AltaLink’s three-year C$2.7-billion investment in Alberta’s energy infrastructure, subject to continued oversight by the Alberta Utilities Commission and the Alberta Electric System Operator.

At least C$27 million will be invested in joint development opportunities in Canada and the United States, with Canadian partners, over the next five years.

Berkshire Hathaway Energy will invest at least C$3 million of new funds over three years to support academic programs focused on energy-related topic s, cultural organizations and communitybased programs across Alberta.

AltaLink’s commitment to provide C$3 million over three years in community and charitable contributions across Alberta will be maintained.

Berkshire Hathaway Energy will share best practices, at no cost, with AltaLink on safety, customer satisfaction, cybersecurity and supplier diversity.

Berkshire Hathaway Energy will provide opportunities for Albertan and other Canadian companies to supply products and services to its other businesses.

in the company and should get a return for their investments. In his view, SNC Lavalin, the seller of AltaLink, should not collect profits from the sale, when ratepayers have paid for capital improvements.

Anglin raised concerns about competition and security. “AltaLink owns transmission lines that have been deemed critical to our economy,” he wrote in a recent editorial. “Does it make sense to sell critical infrastructure to our economy to a foreign company? Does it makes sense that we will guarantee an income to a foreign company that will not pay taxes in Alberta, and pay for all their capital upgrades as well?”

MLA Anglin vehemently opposed the sale of infrastructure that is considered critical to the economy to a foreign company, and proposed that the sale be retendered until the Alberta Utilities Commission can review every proposal.

Village of Minburn – To Join or not to Join?

The matter of viability will soon be before the residents and Council of the Village of Minburn. The question being – To join or not to join the Municipality?

There are as many points of view about what the Village should do as there are people. Some say the tax rate would be more advantageous if they were to join the Municipality, others argue that this would force them to foot the bills for other works or other debts the Municipality may enter into.

The story begins with the Village of Minburn as a financially viable, independent, stable community with approxi-

mately 101 residents and $200,000 in the bank, and no major problems to deal with.

That is, until the Mayor retired.

Once the money ran out, and facing an audit conducted by the province, some neighbours decided that they might be safer from a tax hike if the Village were to join the Municipality.

In August 2012, the Village of Minburn asked Municipal Affairs to do a viability review. For 18 months the Viability Review Team gathered information about the Village’s finances, governance and administration. The Team held a meeting in July of this year to provide information and gather input from community stakeholders.

The Voice spoke with Municipal Affairs

spokesperson, Ryan Heise. “The Village of Minburn is trending towards nonviability,” he explained. In September, the Viability Review Team will complete its “What We Heard” Report with updates and conclusions.

Once the Team reaches its conclusions, it will explore and develop options to make the Village more viable. These options involve infrastructure assessment, ways of creating efficiency, and of saving money.

There will be further stakeholder input until the Viability Plan is released in February or March, 2015.

“We try to help before communities get to the point where they just throw their arms out and quit,” added Heise. “ We like

to work towards recognizing the problems early on and finding solutions.”

The plan is to succeed. A Viability Review is part of the Municipal Affairs Sustainability Strategy, a process of prevention reminiscent of staving off illness.

The Strategy is based on three main steps: Step One, Use the Self-Assessment Tool Kit which helps identify viability issues. If problems remain, go to Step Two where the province provides resources, governmental and non-governmental, to address these issues. If needed, proceed to Step Three, in which the Viability Review Team carries out the study and explores options such as partnering and sharing with the County.

Apples are an excellent source of flavonoids and antioxidants. Even though apples contain sugars, there are nutrients built right into the apple, such as the flavonoid quertin and fiber that prevent the natural fruit sugar from impacting our body blood sugar. This may be why eating one to three apples a day, not only keeps excess weight away, but also aids in weight loss according to researchers at Rio de Janeiro University in Brazil, Pennsylvania State University and Florida State University.

Apple Upside down Cake CakeTop 1 cup flour, all purpose is fine 1/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/3 cup melted butter 1 egg beaten 1 cup milk 1 or 2 teaspoons sugar Apple Base 4 cups chopped apple 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 tablespoon sugar( white or brown) 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Place the chopped apple into an 8” x 8” pan. Combine the cornstarch, cinnamon and the 1 tablespoon sugar in

a small bowl and then gently stir this mixture into the apple. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and sugar and mix well.

Combine the melted butter, milk and egg and then stir it into the flour mixture.

Spoon the batter on top of the chopped apples and smooth out to the edges.

Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes, depending on your oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out. When you serve this desert you can flip the slice upside down on the plate to revel all the lovely apples.

“It ’s a huge transition that we’re undertaking, but the new processes and systems invested will be good for both customer and staff,” David Primar, employee at Lakeland Glass commented.

“Training is huge and we have journeyman glaziers and carpenters as well as autotech who have experience in high functioning shops that have set our standards higher than in the past,” Justin Andreychuk at Lakeland Glass explained.

One of the challenges Lakeland Glass has had to overcome has been addressing prior unfinished work or

In order to meet these needs Lakeland Glass is setting up a system for estimates, investing in a receptionist, utilizing business software to improve the level of organization, prioritizing jobs to start with urgent issues such as broken entrances to homes and businesses, and following up on previous jobs.

“Please continue to be patient with us as we are catching up on jobs, some as far back as 2010. There is a good base and now we are building upon that with new certified staff, upgrading facility, and continuous customer feedback,” Tran said.

Customers and potential customers are already noticing the changes being made by the new management at Lakeland Glass.

NEW PERSPECTIVES FOR MEN

New Perspectives for Men is a program designed for men who have difficulty with abusive behavior in relationships. Participants will be examining their established beliefs and attitudes, and will be provided information on how to live a violent-free lifestyle based on respect, consideration, responsibility and equality in relationships. O n S e p t e m b e r 17, C o m m a n d e r Chris Hadfield—the astronaut famous for singing the song ‘Ground Control to Major Tom’ in space on YouTube— will be visiting Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds, the X-building. “In An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth, Hadfield gives us a rare insider’s perspective on just what that kind of thinking involves, and how earthbound humans can use it to achieve success and happiness in

their lives.”

The funds raised from this event will support Habitat for Humanity projects.

“Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-profit, faith-based organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Karen King Submitted Welcome back VES students and staff. It is wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces. We have a few changes at VES. We would like to welcome Mrs. Christensen as our new grade one teacher, Miss Kjenner as our new grade three teacher and Shawna Craig as our new VIBE coach, as well as all the new students who have decided to make VES their home away from home. As well, we would like to extend our congratulations to Mrs. Zaharko on the birth of her son in July.

School started for the teachers on August 25. We spent Monday at the school having a staff meeting and preparing our classrooms for the start of a new school year. On Tuesday, it was our TES (Teacher Effectiveness Support) Team Day at VES. All the

Vermilion Elementary School elementary teachers from BTPS converged at VES for a day of professional assessment. Wednesday was a Professional Learning Day at our school and Thursday was the day we all looked forward to – the first day with students.

On the first day of school, we had an assembly. Mrs. Webb discussed ‘respect’, the virtue which we are making a priority at VES this year. We want to be respectful of ourselves, of others, and of our environment, and Mrs. Webb suggested ways that we could do this. We recited our motto “Be the Best We Can Be” and we watched a Kid President video about being awesome.

Mrs. McCullough is fortunate to have a practicum student with her this year. Mrs. Sevenhuysen is in her final year of schooling from King’s University and is participating in a school start up program. She was with us for the first four days of school, will return for another three days before Christmas, and then begins her 12 week practicum in January. We welcome her to our school family.

On Thursday, September 11, VES will host an Open House from 5:30-7:00. Please come out to our school for hot dogs and juice and have a look around our school.

Up Close And Personal With Black Leg

Canola Council of Canada Submitted A new video from the Canola Council of Canada zoomed in on blackleg, to show how canola disease infects a plant, how it spreads throughout a field, and what growers can do to protect blackleg resistance traits.

Disease surveys show an increase in blackleg incidence across the Prairies over the past few years. Canola growers may need to re-deploy a more integrated approach to manage the disease.

“After 15 to 20 years of good control from resistant varieties alone, growers may have to implement other practices to protect canola yields and preserve the efficacy of genetic resistance on some fields,” says Clint Jurke, agronomy specialist for the Canola Council of Canada (CCC).

“Growers and agronomists who may have forgotten what the disease looks like and how to manage it will have to rebuild their knowledge and experience base.”

The CCC launched a new video this week with

vivid images to help growers understand and identify the disease. It explains how genetic resistance works, and how growing varieties with the same type of resistance in a short rotation increases the selection pressure for blackleg races that can overcome specific resistance genes.

“The video breaks new ground,” Jurke says.

“It gives a microscopic view of how the pathogen produces disease, which is something we have not seen in video form before, and it explains the difficult concept of resistance breakdown.” The video, called “Blackleg Disease and Resistance Management,” is posted at www.youtube.com/ canolacouncil.

In Pursuit Of The Ultimate Goal – Net Zero

To see the future, a visit to the Lakeland College Centre for Sustainable Innovation, also known as CSI, is recommended.

As a matter of interest, residents of Vermilion will have a chance to tour the CSI’s fascinating installations during Alberta Culture Days at the end of September. Details of that tour will follow.

In this issue, the Voice covers some aspects of the tour conducted on August 29 by Robert Baron, Head of the Renewable Energy and Conservation program at the CSI. In future issues, the Voice will detail other challenging projects the CSI is undertaking.

The Center for Sustainable Innovation Learning Centre is housed in a converted house, set in the old Barrhill property which now belongs to College.

The house may look simple from the outside, but it is a highly intelligent building.

Within its thickly insulated walls there is

an array of equipment carefully selected to show how renewable energy can work, and discover how it might work in an average family home.

For those who wonder, Sustainable Innovation is changing the world. The idea is to protect the environment and make sure that our natural resources do not run out.

To achieve this, we are reconfiguring the way we do business. When we find ways of producing clean design; when we apply methods for conservation, or simply recycle; when we help to eliminate harmful effects on the environment, we become

Routines help children cooperate by reducing stress and anxiet y for everyone. It is essential we all get fair warning for transitions or change, and that can reduce a child feeling like they are being pushed around.

Routines help children learn to take charge of their own activities. Over time, kids learn to brush their teeth, pack their backpacks, etc., without constant reminders. Kids love being in charge of themselves. This feeling increases their sense of competence. Children who feel more independent and in charge of themselves have less need to rebel and be defiant.

Children learn the concept of “looking forward” to things they enjoy, which is an important part of making a happy accommodation with the demands of a schedule. They may want to go to the playground now, but can learn that we always go to the playground in the afternoon, and he can look forward to

it then.

Regular routines help kids get on a schedule, so that they fall asleep more easily at night.

Schedules help parents maintain consistency in expectations. If ever y t hing i s a fig ht , parent s en d up settling: more TV, skip brushing teeth for tonight, etc. With a routine, parents are more likely to stic k to healthy expectations for everyone in the family, because that’s just the way we do things in our household.

The most important thing is routines help a child build confidence in themselves. When a child has a routine established and knows what is expected out of them, it will help them to manage their time and behavior.

Many children thrive on pleasing their parents and work hard to do so.

If you don’t have a routine with your children and never tried one, take this challenge.

Try setting one or two routines, such as morning and before bedtime and stick to them for at least two weeks and see how different things will be.

You might just be less stressed and will be more apt to sharing some quality time with your child. You may also see a difference in your child; he/she will be more rested and prepared so this alone can make them more confident in themselves.

September: Summer Past

September, another summer past.

Some have enjoyed holidays by travelling, seeing family and making memories. Excitement and sadness at saying good-bye and getting back to normal.

Some did not have a summer to enjoy or remember and no normal to return to. Lives were forever changed by deaths and losses. The death of a loved one, a move away from family and friends and an illness.

Whatever the loss, coming into the fall of the year seems like endless pain and a roller coaster of emotions ahead.

I read an interesting article from the book called “Grief Steps” about our roller coaster of emotions at our life

loss and changes.

Author Brook Noel says – “Understanding and facing emotions may be the most troubling part of your journey.

In order to move through our grief we must face it head on. Often at a time of loss we are incapable of understanding and coping with our emotions but we have to continue life functions and push feeling s asid e of ten bur ying them inside for days, months or even years.”

Over the years of dwelling in pain it becomes a growing sadness and we can’t figure out its source. It feels dark and ugly and we try to avoid our feelings and emotions. If we dig into the d ar k nes s to g ain un d er st an d ing we may never come out. Perhaps we should be equally afraid of what happens if we don’t dig into the darkness. All we experience filters through the dark pile before there is a blossom.

The process is like the case of a root canal. We don’t want the pain of the root canal but we don’t want the nagging tooth ache either. To obtain lasting comfort you have to undergo the short term pain to experience the healing and move on.

For some the process of addressing our emotions moves quickly feels like a dam that has been held in, bursting forth. Others require a length of time to chisel and chip away at the wall built within.

Chuckwagon Champion: Kurt Bensmiller!

A celebration was held in Dewberry S p o r t s G r o u n d s o n Au g u s t 2 3 t o congratulate Kurt Bensmiller for his two most recent career show championship wins at the Ponoka (June 26-July 1) and the Calgary Stampede (July 4-13).

Bensmiller started driving at chuckwagon competitions in 1999 and started outriding in 2001.He is touted on halfmileofhell.com as “one of chuckwagon racing’s brightest young stars.”

Since 2001, he has won awards in Ponoka, Calgary, Edmonton, Strathm o r e a n d fr o m t h e WPCA ( Wo r l d Professional Chuckwagon Association).

“His appearance in the Rangeland Derby final made history as it is the only time that three generations of the same family have qualified for the GMC Rang-

land Derby’s winner-take-all final, joining his father Buddy Bensmiller and grandfathers Allen Smith and Alan Bensmiller who were all multi-time finalists.”

Bensmiller’s 2014 winnings brought him over $150,000 in prizes.

He won first place on Day 3 with his best time being 1:14.87 at the Ponoka Stampede. This was followed up a week later at the Calgary Stampede with his best time being 1:12.47 and finished first on day 4 in the final heat. “ Bensmiller is a third generation chuck wagon driver whose brothers Dave and Chance are chuckwagon drivers as well. A two-sport athlete, Bensmiller was part of the Bentley Generals that won the 2009 Allan Cup--symbolic of Canada’s senior hockey champions.

Matters Speckle Park Host Open Farm Days Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Alberta Open Farm Days is part of a national program to connect rural producers with urban consumers. As part of the program, Ed and Debbie Matters opened their farm to the public on August 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to showcase their Speckle Park near Minburn.

The Canadian Speckle Park Association was incorporated under Canada’s Animal Pedigree Act for the purpose of developing Speckle Park as an evolving breed (Canadian Speckle Park Association).

Speckle Park cattle are a mix of speckled cattle, which get their name from their speckled pattern and park which means patterns of white with colored points.

The Speckle Park breed developed primarily along the highways between the Battlefords in Saskatchewan and Edmonton in Alberta (CSPA). Speckle Park cattle, bred for their beef and created in Canada

are now an international breed.

This breed is highly marketable, and has a great reputation for quality beef. In 2006 they met breeding standards which made them a distinct breed. In comparison to other distinct breeds this is relatively young.

Ed and Debbie Matters decided to participate in this year’s Open Farm Days because they raise Speckle Park Cattle, and would like people to know more about this new breed in Canada.

“The speckle park cattle have very good marbling qualities” Debbie Matters explained, as she highlighted some of the breed’s carcass traits. The cattle are fed efficiently and produce quality beef,” said Matters.

“We enjoy meeting new people and promoting our cattle, and farming in general, so it is great to be a part of Open Farm Days,” Matters said.

Along with farm tours, the Matters had a barbeque for their guests, with a garage sale after lunch, featuring modern and

antique items.

Recreation Master Plan Resident Survey

will help guide the future provision of recreation and related services in the region, such as culture and parks.

Million-Dollar Treasures Discovered Amy Kyle Submitted

The Canadian Antiques Coins and Stamps Roadshow is coming to Vermilion.

We never, and I mean never, know what will come through the door at our Antique Roadshow events. Such was the case in Brandon, Manitoba when a couple showed up with an old duffle bag. What was hidden inside the bag took our appraisers’ breath away.

A Stradivarius violin made by a member of the Stradivari family during the golden period of 1770 was tucked away inside an stinky old hockey duffle bag. An offer was made for $800,000 and the violin is now in a personal collection in New York.

Not everything that comes into the Roadshow is of great value. The vase an elderly lady brought into the Roadshow in Prince Edward Island was said to have belonged to Queen Anne of Scotland, however the little tag on the bottom that read “Made in China” confirmed it was in fact a $19.00 vase from Wal-Mart.

At the Roadshow in Saskatoon an elderly gentleman came in with a child’s little red wagon full of what he claimed was gold nuggets, our gold appraiser quickly discovered the rocks where just that, rocks from good old Saskatchewan, but again a rare discovery was made because the little red wagon was built by Renaldo Brothers in 1918 and was in excellent condition.

The owner was offered $700.00, however he declined the offer saying if he sold it he would have no way to take his gold rocks home. I think the elderly gentleman may have thought the appraiser said “gold rocks” instead of old rocks.

At the Roadshow’s stop in Spruce Grove, Alberta there was nothing out of the ordinary. Local folks came in with their family heirlooms and treasures.

The huge collection was accumulated over fifty years. He found most of the coins while working at the municipal dump in Brandon, Manitoba.

“For thirty some years Papa would come home each day and put a few coins in a glass jar. Over the years, the collection turned into hundreds of jars of silver coins.

I can clearly remember my grandfather saying, ‘Someday we will be rich, rich, rich when I sell my coins,’ and then he would break into a big belly laugh that would rattle the dishes in Gamma’s china cabinet.”

After several hours of going over the coins, the road show staff had in fact

discovered twenty-one U.S. silver dollars that had the rare mint mark from the San Francisco Mint. These coins alone are worth $800 apiece. They also uncovered one half-ounce gold coin and seven other gold coins.

“The total weight of the coins was lbs 102 and the Roadshow staff offered us a fantastic price of...well...let’s just say Papa was right when he said some day we would be rich. It was sad to hand over Papa’s coins, but we are sure he would get a huge belly laugh if he knew his silver coins earned us enough to pay for a big part of his great grandchildren’s schooling.”

Everyone is welcome to bring in their dimes, quarters, fifty cent pieces, or silver dollars.

THAT SWING OPEN ON THEIR OWN. WHAT CAUSES THIS AND CAN YOU SUGGEST A WAY TO FIX IT.

A:

Most of the doors we install inside our homes today are very light duty. We call them hollow core doors. The frames on these doors are also light and it is easy to twist them when installing them. By simply over tightening a screw in the frame you can pull the entire door out of level. When this happens you can have several results. Your door may be sticky or may swing open or closed on its own. Many times the doors will warp and require extra force to make them latch. In most cases the frames are nicely trimmed and it is not worth tearing out the frame to stop the annoying issues. You can also try to loosen the hinges and place shims in various places under the hinge to try to straighten things up. If you can’t put up with the way the door works it may be necessary to reinstall the door and frame from scratch. Several swinging doors can also indicate a structural problem but this is not common.

First up on the program was Allan Parr who spoke on behalf of the Ag Society.

He extended congratulations and read a message from MLA Richard Starke--who was unable to attend. Starke’s message extended congratulations to Kurt Bensmiller, his family and his outriders. Starke also stated that Bensmiller was a proud ambassador for Dewberry and area and he wished him luck in all future endeavors.

The Dewberry Chuckwagon Committee congratulated Kurt Bensmiller and told him that they were getting a sign made to add him to the list of Calgary Stampede winners at the entrance to the sports Grounds.

Headley Dennill spoke on behalf of the Village of Dewberry and presented Bensmiller with a beautiful cake from the Village.

Darryl Watt spoke for the County of Vermilion River and spoke of Kurt Bensmiller bringing our area recognition with

his Championships.

Tsuu T’sina Nation, Bensmiller’s sponsors in Calgary, talked about how Bensmiller and his team helped bring unity and pride to the Nation during the 10 days of the Calgary Stampede. The speaker also said that Tsuu T’sina Nation are holding an evening to honor Bensmiller and his outriders on October 3 at the Grey Eagle Casino in Calgary. Everyone was invited.

Eddie L argespada shared some stories of life on the road with Bensmiller and thanked everyone who helped along the way.

Wayne Wright wrapped up the program with his speech and a Champagne toast to Kurt Bensmiller and the rest of the team. Brian Sutter came to personally congratulate Bensmiller.

An excellent video by Brandon Isert was shown. It had interviews and Chuckwagon footage that included the Ponoka and Calgary Stampede.

Finally, everyone was entertained by a great presentation of fireworks followed by a bonfire and fellowship.
