Vermilion A&W Raises Thousands for MS

The 6th Annual A&W Cruisin’ to End MS grand finale took place on August 21 at the Vermilion A&W with great burgers, and a collection of classic cars, their owners and pooches.

From every Teen Burger ® sold at A&W restaurants across Canada $1 was donated to the MS Society of Canada.

A&W also donated $1 to the MS Society for every RSVP to the A&W Cruisin’ to end MS event on Facebook and every tweet with the hashtag #CruisinToEndMS. More than 800 A&W restaurants across Canada hosted Cruisin’ to end MS events with great food, music, activities, hot rods and classic cars.

Maud Crews, A&W Manager told the Voice that the amount raised in cash donations was $2,879.53. “Teen Burgers

sold 337 regular teens, 43 double teens and 18 guacamole teens. We raised $398 from burger sales,” said the proud Crews.

The Prize winners: 1st prize, a fluffy A&W Bear went to Les Bauer; 2nd prize went to Peter Ham who received four beautiful A&W mugs, and 3rd Prize, a Cruisin’ Clock, went to Abigail Bowtell.

The Classic Car Show, Raffle, and MS Society staff on-site wish to thank the public for their support.

A&W and its customers raised $5 million in the first five years of the campaign. Last year $1.45 million was raised and A&W hopes to build on this success and raise even more for this important cause in 2014.

Approximately 100,000 Canadians live with MS – the highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world. Three more are diagnosed every day. MS is the most common neurological disease in young adults in Canada.

It’s our 3rd year hosting the Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope in Vermilion, but this year is special. This year I am not only walking to benefit the 17,000 Canadian women living with ovarian cancer, I’m walking for my friend Lyla Fee. She has been living with ovarian cancer and has had many struggles and hurdles to overcome.

She is a fantastic, strong woman, a person one is proud to call a friend.

Canada has the only national charity dedicated solely to overcoming ovarian cancer. They provide support for women and families affected by ovarian cancer, raise public awareness about the disease and fund critical research.

Fitness as Power – A Healthy Combination

Changes, changes ... Vermilion is a town in motion located in a province which is fast becoming one of the best places to live, and beginning to receive a flood of newcomers with ideas, needs and attitudes the likes of which we have not seen before.

The world is changing at a dizzying pace, and the globe seems to be spinning faster than ever.

Temperatures are hovering down; mother nature is changing her colours, and with that we will modify our foods and activities.

But the real transformation will come from those newcomers, a majority of which

we call Generation Y or Millennials. Those Canadians born after 1982, it appears, were made to change the world in ways we could not imagine.

To put them into perspective: Millennials have inherited a world drowning in debt, riddled with war, overwhelmed with poverty and misery, and thoroughly savaged by climate change.

And yet here they are, the healthiest, most generous, most environmentally conscious generation in history.

Whether they are getting by or doing well, a great number of Millennials have started help groups or foundations, big and small.

They believe one should help, donate, organize or produce for the less fortunate as a matter of lifestyle.

As we know, Millennials spend their lives riveted to their phones, and we tend to think

they are just chatting with their friends, or wasting time. The truth is that, staying connected empowers them. Take a small business entrepreneur for example, or a club owner: building relationships or keeping tabs on clients can increase business in a significant way.

In the office, Millennials tend to use the phone more often than the internet. While they talk with their colleagues in France or Singapore, others are trading millions of dollars between Asia, Africa and Europe.

The result is fast-changing, quick-evolving economies which are keeping producers, suppliers and supply chain experts scratching their heads, and trying to figure out how to keep the pace.

Every trend produces a new app. Take my Millennial friend’s dedication to the dance/exercise called “Zumba”.

The Organization was flawless and the Volunteers were on time, on task, welcoming and relaxed. I found the camping spots just great. It was so amazing to be able to walk from the concert to a tent home in a place of green with a view of the river on one side and the ski hill on the other (NO traffic, no site buses, no dust) that I was probably unfairly critical of the many people who think generators are an integral part of “camping rough”.

That said, I did appreciate the plastic port-a-potties: so much for roughing it!

Dear Editor, Op-ed: Canada remains Israel’s closest friend Over the past several weeks, Canadians have encountered a varied international response to the situation in Israel. Understandably there has been much doubt and speculation about Israel’s friends in their time of need. There can be no such speculation about Canada’s position. Our Prime Minister and our Government are entirely supportive of the right of Israel to defend itself against clear terrorist acts on its citizens and way of life.

These are indiscriminate rocket attacks that threaten the lives of innocent Israeli and Palestinian civilians alike. While the Israel Defense Forces have taken every precaution to avoid civilian casualties, Canada mourns for those innocent Palestinians who have lost their lives. But let there be no mistake – Hamas and its allies are solely responsible for the current crisis. Their complete disregard for the lives of Palestinians and Israelis, and their use of human shields to further terror in the region, is unacceptable and will not lead to peace. Peace can only be achieved through support of

Israel’s ideals and a stable democracy in the Palestinian state.

Canada’s unequivocal stand for Israel’s security is not new. This is a friendship that our two nations have maintained before and throughout the current crisis. Our two nations are natural allies as we maintain a strong relationship rooted in history and shared values. We must stand alongside Israel and defend its right to exist because, in the words of Prime Minister Harper, it is “a Canadian tradition to stand for what is principled and just, regardless of whether it is convenient or popular.”

Like we have shown through the situation in eastern Ukraine, Canada will always stand opposed to aggressors who threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of peaceful states. This is no different with Israel – the region’s lone democracy which has continually demonstrated its respect for peace, human rights, stability and the rule of law.

Canada will always cherish and promote these values. Israel, too, has every right to defend them.

In our previous issue, the article about Brandan Lyster regarding the Legends on the Niagara Battlefield competition, should have read: “On day 3, after a 2-day total, Lyster was 155, missing the cut by 2 strokes.”

It was my first time in Mistahiya, and my friends and I were very excited about the drive, camping, and mostly about the music. The drive was long, nearly six hours, but the roads were good and we enjoyed the rolling hills with two colours of gold—oats and oil.

The location was awesome! It took me a day to figure out that this place is off grid. The closer I looked, the more I saw environmental responsibilit y and respectful custody of a beautiful environment behind an almost perfect (and well-laid out) concert venue.

The young man doing the sound had to work for it, and met every challenge.

I also liked that young local talent was showcased, and that they may have gotten to jam with some of the more established artists. Each festival has its own way of doing that, and the Mistahiya producers got it right.

It was fun. I am very glad I came. I hope to be back next year.

It was a b eaut i ful, still morning, not too hot; a mist came off the calm creek; the morning sunshine made everything green glow with a sparkle, and I walked slowly taking in all the sights.

Stopping often to observe or just to enjoy, as I scanned the smaller poplar trees in full green plumage, I did notice several with golden yellow leaves already.

It was a very calm and still morning with hardly a slight breeze, maybe in denial I didn’t acknowledge the yellow leaves as a sign of fall, I swear, as I admired the golden colors high on the tree tops.

One of the exact big yellow leaves I stared at, gently let go and, in a slow zigzag, it floated down to earth. I walked up to see the leaf lying there, standing out in the surrounding green.

Then it hit me: OMG, I thought: “I just witnessed fall.” OK maybe that’s a little drastic, however, it is past mid-August and from a bowhunter’s perspective, fall starts on September 1 with Opening Day. With less than two weeks until that day approaching, I have been trying all my theories on slowing down our short summer time. I now realize it works … but just not at the present time.

What I mean is, adventures and memories thought of months from now … suspend time forever, and the more adventures and fond memories the longer that summer will seem.

The big flaw is that it just doesn’t slow down summer in the present. In fact, the more activity and adventure one lives through creates quite the opposite, and time seems to speed up in a blur.

It really brings home the point of just how very important enjoyable adven-

Around The Campfire tures and fond memories really are to me and/or us. Those memories really can make time stand still.

Maybe in the distant future, we can lie back in a comfortable easy chair, put on a silly-looking beanie hat and download all our fond memories and adventures onto a memory stick like we do with our computers.

And as we age or are just feeling down in the dumps, lie back in that easy chair and relive that adventure or memory in a real-time, realistic new adventure.

Maybe I realized that as a youngster, and it is the reason I can have such a vivid and photogenic memory for certain things, and why I also developed such a wild imagination and have dreams so vivid they would scare most people.

It’s hard to describe, but I have a wall in my shop/office full of 8x10 full colour pictures of highlights of many outdoor adventures. It’s honestly not a bragging wall; it’s more of a time portal.

On long winter days when I can’t see outdoors, or I am feeling down, I can look at that wall, at a particular picture, and practically transport to that exact time and adventure.

I can actually relive the excitement and even the weather, in just seconds, with all my senses: sight, sound and scent. It’s hard to explain, but it sure makes me feel a whole lot better.

OK, back to earth in present time and continuum, ha ha. As I look at the next two weeks it will be a blur with little in the way of planned adventures, but I will be assisting others prepare for theirs.

It’s my busiest time of year in the Archery Pro Shop, and midnight will see me often working on the archery equipment of others. The more they realize how fast time and summer are flying by, the busier I become.

By all the work I have its good to know that I am not the only one whose summer is slipping away. Hopefully I can get my own gear ready as I head to the cabin in 11 sleeps for my 2014

bowhunting adventures.

Now for the good news: just because fall or autumn starts for myself and many youngsters with school on September 1, summer does last longer than most think.

The official fall Equinox, or the first day of autumn/fall, is September 22 in 2014, so summer in reality lasts until almost October for the regular folk.

Also, some of the hottest days happen in September.

I have always said the best summer weather is in the fall, the only time of the year when it is not too cold or too hot, and there is relief from either at some point of the day.

So, don’t panic, summer is still here for over a month officially, however you should still get out there for those adventures and fond memories for summer 2014.

Just this last Labour Day weekend, I was visiting my son Gordon and his family in Slave Lake before the new school year started.

They had been shopping for the school supplies that my five grandchildren have on their lists supplied by the school. I was totally amazed at all the supplies that are required of today’s students.

Each child needed a backpack to haul all the ring binders, calculators, and all sorts of things I didn’t know were now such, I guess, basic necessities.

No wonder you see articles about children having back trouble from having to pack a load like that around.

They even needed a lock at school to lock their things in for safe- keeping. My, how times have changed!!

I guess hard times lessened the load

on parents’ need to supply all those goodies. We went to school with a lard or syrup pail lunch bucket and I can’t remember any kind of homework or the like unless we’d been home sick for awhile and had to work at home to catch up.

Most of my early math text books or whatever other books had numerous names from previous users over the years and they were well used. All we got were new “scribblers” as we called them, with no ring binders in sight.

My grandkids told me that there isn’t such a thing as blackboards any more.

Imagine no brushes to clean, or long times standing at the front showing your limits of learning on the blackboard.

In our old school there were all the grades, from 1 to 9, all of us sitting in those old desks with the drawer under your seat, and the arm rest on the right side. I, being left-handed, did not have such a luxury as an arm rest for my left wing.

It seems the classroom of today is so

very far removed from what we experienced in those early times.

All the students have to be smartly dressed and have all the latest doodads or they will be picked on and made to feel inferior. Kids in my day in earlier times had patches on their pants leg and no one thought anything of it. When you see the affluence of people now you wonder how education can be carried on in the poorer, undeveloped parts of the world anymore.

Our old Ganton School had no well and washing up wasn’t possible. As I remember there wasn’t even a sink. Certainly there was no toilet except the ones on either side of the barn; with hot and cold running.

Well, warm water any way, in the summer, and for sure cold running in the winter. The memories of sitting on that cold seat can chill me out on a hot day.

A visit to a modern school, all well-lit and heated would sure cap what we endured at Ganton.

On a windy, cold day the ink wells never

thawed out until near noon. It was cold at desk level and the paint above the stove pipe that ran the length of the school was all blistered from the heat. There are so many new sciences to life now that kids have to cope with.

I’m glad I lived in a less complicated time, with no drugs and such to contend with. We contended with the outdoor toilets and poor heating and the struggles to even get to school in bad weather come winter, and the morning was sometimes taken up with just getting undressed and warmed up.

We learned perseverance as well as the 3-Rs (Readin’, Rigtin’, ‘Rithmetic) and it seemed there was no end to the challenge; we just had to carry on.

The quality of the schooling was maybe lacking, but good students still got educated and hit the colleges, and a good number of kids from the country excelled in every walk of life and weren’t in any way handicapped with having been country kids from the sticks.

Lukaszuk Outlines Three-point Plan for Government to Welcome New Ideas Thomas Lukaszuk Submitted

“Government should not be a place where ideas go to die,” said PC leadership candidate Thomas Lukaszuk. He released a three-pronged approach for government to bring new ideas forward.

final product is all the better as a result,” Lukaszuk said.

New Premier’s Advisory Councils will provide an outside perspective on education, health care, environment, multiculturalism, and other areas. And a stronger mandate for all-party legislature committees will give MLAs of all political parties a stronger voice.

Recognizing the on-the-ground expertise of front-line staff in health and government services will help identify ways to make programs and services better.

Lukaszuk proposed to create safe channels for staff to share solutions to problems they find every day. “Give people an opportunity to blow the whistle on stupid rules,” he said.

There was a guy at Expo 86 who spent most of his day observing and then inconspicuously following behind random passersby, silently mimicking their manner of walking. His movements were exaggerated and hilarious----he was a comedian, after all----but the most fascinating aspect about his act was the way it drew attention to just how much variation could be involved in the simple act of walking.

Are you an arm swinger? And if you are, do you swing your left arm when you advance with your right foot or your left?

Is your walk closer to a regimental march or is it more a loose amble with a bit of hip shake? What touches ground first, heel or toe? Long stretch strides or speedy short steps? Are you a lean forward at the waist

sloucher, an ankle flinger, a back slanter, or a flap foot shuffler? A stomper or a soft shoe? So many fascinating options, so under appreciated is walking.

Interesting, isn’t it, that when we’re toddlers we struggle to locate our personal balancing point, our center. We just want to get up off the floor and stand. Even at the risk of tumbling to inevitable injury, we try and try again until we attain that moment of victory when finally we’re upright and able to waddle free from dependence on our stabilizing chair, table, or walker to join the world of the upright. Yay! During these summer days in lake country, it’s sometimes an anomaly to meet people walking. Even those whose cabins are the equivalent of one city block away from the beach tend to opt for the convenience of sit and ride. People have golf carts and quads and side by sides to haul their gear----along with ever-expanding butts---down to the beach to sit for an afternoon of

stationary relaxation before packing up and riding back home.

So, it’s mostly only aliens whose footprints can be found along the dirt roads and grassy walk ways. If they’re smart aliens, or just flexibly employed ones, they often choose to hover around lake country havens during the week when the opportunity to stroll and commune with nature is less likely to resemble a modified game of dodgeball with ATVs as the ball and walking creatures the fraidy cat targets. Aliens lurking in the country tend to have an affinity for natural sounds and a general aversion to revving motors. It’s a flaw in their pointy little ears. Sometimes, to escape, they venture straight into the woods before a pathway through there has even been carved out of the virgin forest by kids riding their parents’ bucking recreational machines, underage adventurers who gladly gouge their way through territory where no one has ever mercilessly hacked down skinny little

sun-starved saplings before them. Walking aliens can appear out of nowhere on the no road no rules landscape, but so can the machine people. We can only hope that these opposing elements don’t often collide, one so quiet and stealth, the other so loud and earth-rattling.

Soon enough in the inevitable cycle of life, we may again depend upon a stabilizing device to enable us to walk slowly around the block or down the hall to the communal dining room. For whatever time we’re allotted between those first few toddler steps of victory and the wind down to the latter days of elderhood, we might consider showing off our unique approach to moving forward without assistance of any stabilizing machinery as much as possible. Stand up. Walk your own way. Walk anywhere.

Walk even when you could easily sit down and ride. Walk, while you still can.

A: A tippy toilet is a cousin to a leaking toilet, if left alone it will begin to

leak soon. I usually recommend tightening the floor bolts first to see if this helps. A word of caution here, do not over tighten the bolts or you may crack the base of the toilet flange that holds it to the floor. You may already have a cracked flange which likely means you will need a plumber or do some plumbing changes yourself. If tightening the bolts does not help it is possible that the flange is not level with the floor. The drain plumbing and floor may need to be cut open to make the necessary repairs. Hopefully this is not the case as changing the drain plumbing which is all glued in place becomes a fairly large job depending upon where the toilet is in the home.

Students preparing to head off to college or university need to make sure they have their financial affairs in order, including setting a realistic budget to ensure they have funds available for the entire school year.

While the big items – like tuition and rent – may be easier to forecast monthly, don’t forget to budget for books, supplies and social expenses, like dining out with friends.

“A great way to set and stick to a budget is by tracking your purchases so you can

see where your money goes,” said Caroline Hubberstey, Head of External Affairs, Interac Association and Acxsys Corporation.

“Using your debit card for purchases means you’re avoiding debt by spending your own money, plus you can check your online bank account to see what you’ve spent throughout the month.”

Hubberstey says it can also helps to plan out a budget that itemizes income, expenses and a reserve of savings, with ten per cent being a good guide. “Keeping track of your money can help to keep your spending in check. If you only have access to a budgeted amount each week it’s easier to avoid over-

spending.”

But even with the best budgeting intentions, many students find they need a little extra money from time to time, especially at the end of the month when bills are due. Hubberstey says that often means an appeal for emergency funds from parents, who want to be sure the money they send their children is deposited safely and quickly.

In those cases, she says Interac e-Transfer is one of the fastest and least expensive ways to transfer money securely.

“All that’s required is an email address or mobile phone number and a bank account at a participating Canadian financial institu-

tion,” said Hubberstey. “Once the transfer is initiated through online banking, the recipient is notified by email or text message and provided with a link to deposit funds directly into their online bank account.”

She added e-Transfer is also useful for students sharing expenses with roommates – rather than exchanging cash or cheques to pay joint bills, money can be sent via Interac e-Transfer to one person who pays the bill on behalf of the group.

Students and parents say they start their online search for the latest and most affordable mobile technology, months before the next school year begins – and now that time is just around the corner.

The mobility factor is a definite advantage, but tablets are becoming as functional as laptops and can be seamlessly integrated into classrooms. Education Highlight: Kenneth Noster, Founder of Wisdom Rebecca Hoekstra Submitted

When you ask Ken Noster, director and co-founder of Wisdom Homeschooling, about his dreams, he has to admit he isn’t much of a dreamer. Instead, Ken says he is working on someone else’s dreams. God’s dreams. His desire is to do what God desires of him and respond to what He has called him to do. “Beats my dreams all to heck,” he adds with a smile.

Following God’s dreams can sometimes lead down interesting paths.

In 1995, Ken and his wife Marlane founded Wisdom Homeschooling, an administrative board for homeschoolers that began with around three hundred students and operated out of a small room within their own home.

The founding of a board like Wisdom was certainly not a dream of Ken’s, but rather a response to prayer and the realization that it was time for home educa-

tion to have its own unique system, apart from that of the schools, and specifically designed to fit the growing need of homeschoolers.

The journey wasn’t always easy. As Ken pointed out, homeschooling faces cultural opposition and there is great pressure against this form of education, as well as a constant movement to restrict it. Regardless of this, today Wisdom Homeschooling has over three thousand students and the small office room has been replaced by a larger, more spacious office building not far from the Noster home.

Wisdom has come a long way in almost twenty years, and most would call what Ken and Marlane have achieved with Wisdom success, but Ken does not view Wisdom as his success. In fact, when asked where he has been successful, he is quick to respond that he has been successful nowhere. Everything is God’s success, he says, not his.

Besides working as the Director of

Wisdom, Ken is also a farmer. Although a non-dreamer, Ken admits that he always wanted to farm. This year all the crops were certified organic for the first time and, despite this process being a long one, involving a lot of paper work, Ken views it as worth it. He likes to eat healthy food and the idea of being able to offer healthy food to others is appealing.

Helping others has always been a big part of Ken’s life and even from a young age Ken says that he felt a calling to help other people. While there may be ups and downs in the homeschool sphere, bad years and good years on the farm, there will never be a drought of opportunity to serve the needs of others.

Ken has no idea what the future holds, but he says one must have faith and go forward.

Supermoon Sunday People looked to the night sk y on Sunday, August 10, for a glimpse of the “Supermoon”. This eye-catching full moon appeared orange in color and bigger than a usual full moon.

The Supermoon is a nickname used to describe a lunar phenomenon that happens during orbit, when the moon is closest to the Earth.

If you were able to witness this event you were most likely awe-struck as the sight is quite magical.

Folklore has made full moons a topic of conversation saying they have the power to make animals and people act “strange”.

Heritage Mural and Hopefully More Keri Pullyblank, Vermilion Allied Arts Submitted

The Heritage Mural is almost complete on the east wall of the Seniors’ Centre. The theme, “Community Builders: Past and Present,” is resonating with our community, and people are getting on board.

We want people from Vermilion’s past to be remembered, but just as importantly, we want all Vermilion and area people as current Vermilion community builders to be a part of this.

We are all community builders just by being part of the community. More than ten thousand dollars has been raised so far, but we are hoping to involve many more people. The dollars raised will help fund

this mural and hopefully more in the future.

It would be great if in two or three years, visitors were making special trips to Vermilion to check out our murals!

People donating to the Heritage Mural and future murals can designate what names they want inscribed on a plaque that will run horizontally along the bottom of the Heritage Mural.

Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) holds Open House in Vermilion Elina Castro Reporter

The Alberta Electric System operator (AESO) is a non-profit organization which operates the electric system, arranges for demand and generation, and operates the transmission system.

The other side of the company’s mandate is to keep the public informed in a timely manner as to the power needs within the region, and of the

changes that may take place.

According to AESO, the central east region of the province, comprising the Cold Lake, Vegreville, and Provost area is growing rapidly.

So rapidly in fact that, with energy demands expected to double in the n ex t t e n ye a r s , t h e t r a n s m i s s i o n system does not have the capacity to support additional demand.

AltaLink and ATCO Electric are the Transmission Facility Owners whose

service areas fall within central east region. Once demand has been identified and the studies c arried out, AESO recommends to the Alber ta Utilities Commission for approval. The Transmission Facility Owners apply to construct and operate the required transmission facilities.

AESO held Open Houses throughout the province. In Vermilion they were at the Regional Centre on Tuesday, August 19.

The purpose of an Open House is to give stakeholders, that is, those who have a stake in the project, a chance to comment on the company’s plans, as well as the direction, status and decisions related to its projects.

The experience and exper tise offered through public involvement is used to improve the quality and implementation of decisions.

The Fight To End Duchenne Geraldine Coolidge Submitted

On Saturday September 20, 2014 MD Lashburn will be hosting its 3rd annual fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The Fight to End Duchenne. This small community of Lashburn and surrounding area has raised over $78,000 for research in the last two years.

A s o n e of t h e or g anizer s an d a parent of a young child battling with Duchenne, I have set out to make a change. Affecting 1 in 3,500 boys born (Approx. 20,000 new cases each year) rated the leading fatal disease among children. At the age of 8 my son Preston’s time is running out. In the next few years he will lose his ability to walk as his muscles weaken and die.

Vermilion Volunteer Cribbage Doubles We are pleased to report another successful turnout for Cribbage Doubles

Crib Players Mannville Care Centre Donation Earlier this year, the Royal Purple from the Mannville Lodge donated half of the cost of a machine that keeps blankets warm. The remainder of the cost was donated recently by the Mannville Elks. The blanket warmer will be placed in the Mannville Care Centre in hopes that it will help the seniors to be more comfortable.

On August 21, a brief but significant ceremony took place in front of the Stadium on the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds.

The weather was cool, the sky overcast, but no one minded, the mood was upbeat, the news was all good.

After a brief chat with the media, MLA Richard Starke handed over a letter and a cheque for $48,000 to the Town’s Director of Community Services, Shawn Bell.

Gospel Jamboree in Kitscoty

On August 17, a Gospel Jamboree was in full swing at the Kitscoty Hall.

Guests of all ages enjoyed musical performances and a lunch throughout the event.

Per formers for the jamboree i n c l u d e d To u c h of G r ac e, S h ar l i e Sjoquist and Tim Donily, Claire Schira, Stephanie Ko c h, Marian Newman, Fort Pitt Choirs, and Canada’s Double Portion.

Starting at 11:00 a.m., the hall filled with people who came to admire the talent of the different acts. Singers took the stage and shared personal stories with the audience, alongside their songs.

For a five dollar charge, lunch was provided along with refreshments and dessert.

One act in particular got the crowd clapping and singing along. The band, Canada’s Double Portion hails from North Battleford, Saskatchewan. This group is an all-family ministr y band that travels through Canada and the United States sharing their music.

The family consists of the parents, Duncan and Debbie Hemmerling and their ten children. Their sound is a mix ranging from Contemporary, Gospel to Country, and Bluegrass.

The group has received nominations and awards from the Gospel Music Association Canada, and their new CD “Days and Times” was produced in Nashville by Gordon Mote. The family

has performed with some of Gospel Music’s premiere bands.

Christina Hemmerling described the group’s hectic schedule philosophically. “We have been full every weekend this summer, and this coming weekend is the first one we have off, which will be nice.”

Christina, along with her siblings manned the group’s booth which sold promotional items and copies of their CD between shows.

The crowd clapped along with the music, children danced and played on the dance floor and smiles were evident all around during this Sunday event which showcases many talented gospel artists.

Lakeland College and its Students add $168 million to Regional Economy

It was 101 years ago when Alberta Minister of Agriculture, Duncan Marshall, envisioned an agricultural school for new settlers which would educate young people close to home, and once their studies were finished, it would encourage them to return to the farm.

After much research and planning, the province of Alberta bought farms for newcomers to attend small demonstrations and courses, and in 1913, three new agricultural schools opened. The result of this vision is Lakeland College.

We know that education promotes better lifestyles, improved health and reduced crime, and we can appreciate other benefits from having Lakeland College in our community, such as a world-famous campus with a long and proud history, the presence of a large body of youth, educators from around the world, but …

Have you ever seen the numbers in the raw? Has anyone told you what Lakeland College has added to our economy this past year?

You’d better have a seat. The numbers are dazzling.

The impact of Lakeland College and its students on our regional economy for the year 2012-13 is $168 million.

Following are some details of an economic impact study recently c om pleted by Ec onomi c M o d eling Specialists Inc. (EMSI).

Located in Moscow—don’t worry, it’s a college town in Idaho, United States— EMSI has been conducting economic impact studies for colleges across four countries for 14 years.

So, EMSI’s credentials notwithstanding: Why would a College filled with highly educated people order a study from a group living so far away?

Objectivity. A professional group specializing in this type of study for educational institutions can see problems and opportunities more clearly from the outside, and report accordingly. Their findings are impressive.

In 2012-13, ta xpayers in Alber ta forked out $39.6 million to support the operations of Lakeland College. What are we getting for it? The return is a staggering $261.5 million in provincial prosperity.

To explain: Students with a quality education and excellent skills will qualify for higher paying jobs. Employers benefit in turn, since a highly trained workforce results in better earnings for their businesses.

Add to this the fact that higher earnings make for better lifestyles and with that there is less need for social assistance, reduced crime and better health.

Taken together – added income and social savings, it is clear that the students of Lakeland College generate a significant benefit to the provincial economy.

“This report highlights a few of the many ways Lakeland College contributes to the well-being of our students, the local region and the province,” said Dr. Tracy Edwards, president of the College. “It shows that Lakeland College is an excellent investment for students and taxpayers.”

Lakeland College served more than 7,500 full-time and part-time students.

Of this total, 4,249 relocated to the region to attend Lakeland. It is esti-

mated that out-of-region student spending added $3.8 million in income to the region.

Lakeland College is also a major employer, with 430 full-time employees.

The impact of college payroll plus dayto-day operational spending was $50.8 million in added regional income during the year.

The contributions of former students now employed in the regional workforce amounted to $113.4 million in added income.

Taxpayers also receive a positive return for their investment in Lakeland College: for every dollar that Alberta taxpayers spent on Lakeland College during 2012-2013, society will receive

Others with green thumbs help plant the flowers, trees and weeding of same that makes Vermilion inviting. As you drive into Vermilion you cannot help but notice the flowers by the Information Centre.

Some volunteer their time to clean and man the Heritage Museum. Many have a close connection to some of the items that have been d onated so future generations can see what their ancestors accomplished through c o o peration and har d wor k . M any times people were disappointed with their lot in life, but kept their heads high and continued on.

The majority of the women working at the Exhibit Hall for the Vermilion Fair are senior ladies. Many of the beautiful entries in the Exhibit Hall were by

seniors, wonderful entries that were awarded first prizes.

The Old Time Cabin at the fair is also manned by seniors.

Many of the wonderful pies sold at the fair and other functions have been made by senior ladies. If you attend church you will note that the congregation and church committees include seniors. The years go by quickly and suddenly we’re seniors! We want to pass on our knowledge, our skills, and our passions to the next generation in a positive manner.

Having recently been to Peru, a third world country, where the government is very corrupt, where the country has a lot of riches but is not well managed, one cannot help but compare Canadians who have all the amenities that others have not, but often we do not appreciate our lifestyle. Seniors do not do well there, many live in poverty, with little hope of change.

At the Senior Centre, the birthday and anniversar y celebrations took place on August 11. Keri Pullyblank spoke on Alberta Cultural Days to be held September 26-28, a new undertaking for Vermilion.

Many activities will be taking place (more information in the Talk of the Town) whic h is inc luded with your water bill.

The one item that will interest all seniors is the Heritage Mural that is being painted on the east wall of the Seniors Centre. Barr y Overn is the artist. A small mock-up is available for

On Monday, July 7, 2014 Mrs. Elsie Pidruchney of Vermilion passed away at the age of 96 years.

Elsie was born on April 13, 1918 and was raised on a farm near Myrnam. She married John Pidruchney in 1936 and together they farmed near Pathfinder for almost sixty years. Elsie was an active member of Our Lady of Assumption Ukrainian Catholic Church Ladies League and the Myrnam Order of the Royal Purple. Elsie and John retired in Myrnam and later moved to Vermilion. She leaves to cherish her memory, children Rose Romaniuk (late Clarence) of Costa Rica, Ellen (Oswald) Yaremchuk of Vegreville, Ed (Lorna) Pidruchney of Edmonton, Doreen (Harry) Judge of Medicine Hat, and Patricia Pidruchney (Cliff Driver) of Vermilion; grandchildren Charles, Tanya (Kirk), Cynthia (Jason), Loren, Gord (Alicia), Shelley, Laurian, Harry Joseph, John (Kylie), Kathryn (Edward), and Marcellus; great grandchildren Hunter, Skyler, Brook, Willow, River, Matthew, Sunni, Melodia, and Anika; sister in law Mary Edey and numerous relatives and friends. The Fastest Time of the Night was Vern Nolin for Bob Jack’s Sheet Metal with a time of 1:20.68 with outriders Chance Bensmiller and Brett Nolin.

The Heat of the Night winner for Heat Number 6 was BJ Carey for Precision Contractors with a time of 1:21.47 with outriders Mick Nolin and Aric Pare.

Aggregate Champion was Ray Mitsuing for Weaver Order Buying and First Truck Center with outriders Dale Mitsuing and Darren Mitsuing.

given at the finals with Westridge in 2002.

You may have seen or heard about the Ice Bucket Challenge that is going viral on social media sites. People are being challenged to donate money to the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) organization.

This organization raises money for research and awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The act of dumping a bucket of ice water over your head and/or donating money to the organization is the idea behind the challenge. You are nominated for the challenge, and then have 24 hours to accept the challenge or to decline it.

If you choose to accept the challenge, you are to announce that you have accepted while being recorded for social media purposes. Af ter your speech, a bucket of ice water is dumped over your head.

You are then expected to nominate three people for the challenge.

T h e m o s t p o p u l ar ve r s i o n a s k s people to donate $100 to the charity, not to have the ice water poured over their head, or $10 towards the charity if you choose to have the ice water poured over you.

It is also po pular for peo ple to accept the ice water being poured over their head, as well as donate the larger amount of $100.00.

Plaque Marks Anniversary of War Measures Act

St.Olga’s Parish in Vermilion, held a plaque unveiling on August 22 at 11:00 a .m. T h e eve nt m ar ke d t h e 10 0 t h Anniversary of the implementation of the War Measures Act. 100 plaques were simultaneously unveiled coast to coast across Canada.

T h e C a n a d i a n F i r s t Wo r l d Wa r Internment Recognition Fund, alongsid e the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation distributed the plaques to various sites in the country. Information about the sites can be found on www.internmentcanada.ca.

On August 19, a Farmer’s Market, Children’s Day & Customer Appreciation event took place at the Elk’s Hall from 10 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Indoor tables filled the hall. Fresh seasonal food, baked goods, personal goods and crafts, were all available to consumers.

What began as a simple bet among friends, turned into a painstaking investigation.

It was a short while ago that two friends in Vermilion idly wondered when the first traffic lights had been installed in town.

They first contacted the Department of Highways who referred them to the Town. The Town suggested they call ATCO who asked them why they wanted the information, and put them on hold.

The friends then checked a local resident’s scrapbook, but the scrapbook mysteriously went missing. They began asking the townfolk, but people could only hazard guesses within a range of 10 years.

When the friends, by now not idling but in full gear and determined to find the answer, asked their friends around town, they were encouraged to contact the Public Library. And so they did.

Bless 1922, when the Vermilion Public Library was inaugurated, for it was there that the tide of inquiry turned.

Library Manager-turned-Investigator, Stuart Pauls continued with the quest. Pauls had been given a 10-year window on which to base his investigation—a daunting task.

However, local author and historian, Allen Ronaghan happened to be at the Library on that day and, though he was not one hundred percent sure of the answer, he was able to speak with a friend who happened to remember the exact date since on that very day he had run his first red light and had been
