he said about our tendency to strive for completeness. In this album he conveys that there should be no pressure to rush the process of transition. “It’s good to keep growing and to keep our minds open for new opportunities.”

Stead told the Voice that any song which engages people to sing along is a favourite. But the one that rallies his audiences is “We All Will Be Fine.”

“It changes peoples’ faces while they sing along,” he explained. “It’s all part of who you are.”

The Voice caught up with the lyrical songwriter Duane Steele from Hines Creek Alberta, who had just returned from visiting family. Steele said that he is bringing in an acoustic trio, with Allison Granger on violin and Joey McIntyre on percussion.

Steele’s debut with “POBox 423” propelled him to stardom, with three singles going top 5 and the #1 hit, “Anita

Got Married.”

The CCMA winner for Vocal Collaboration of the Year, and Independent Male Vocalist of the Year has recently co-produced “Ghost Town,” an allCanadian album which makes him extremely proud.

Steele promised to delight us with country radio hits from the 90s, and with his renowned version of Gordon Lightfoot’s, “If You Could Read My Mind.”

And now for some great news— Steele will be presenting songs from his new album “Dirt and Dreams” to be released in October.

His favourite song is “Country Folk,” co-written with Deric Ruttan. “Country Folk” is an ode to his Mom and Dad, homesteaders in northern Alberta, and is reminiscent of Steele’s rural upbringing, the community lifestyle he had growing up there and his love and respect for those who live off the land.

From Roots to Rock and Jazz to Folk, plus Country, Celtic and Blues, the artist lineup is nothing short of spectacular. The Voice took care to bring a little prelude, just for you.

Folksinger David Francey told the Voice that his performance at Mistahiya will be a mix of old and new. Francey’s work, which shines for its authenticity, features real people with real lives.

“When you write in a factual way about your own life; what the world seems like —and you do so with honesty—people will relate,” he mused in a recent telephone conversation.

Francey is a late starter, and his debut was a hit. “Torn Screen Door,” released in 1999, kick started his meteoric career.

We asked Francey what made the song special.

“Everyone knew someone who was losing their home, their farm; a part of their lives was being torn away,” he said, referring to the tide of foreclosures at the time. “The song rang like a bell, and people got it.”

“So Say We All,” his 2013 album, set Francey up as a chronicler of the struggle of the working classes.

Of his great body of work, the Voice asked: “Which is your favourite?”

Francey replied that his favourite is usually his latest.

“But I must confess that “Paper Voyage” evokes memories of a good part of my life. While the world out there seemed to be falling apart, I was having a pretty good time,” he told us, referring to the paper route he had as young lad in his native Scotland.

Are we lucky to have Ken Stead back!

After a five-year walkabout in the United States, Stead has returned to Edmonton where the Voice caught up with him for a brief chat.

Stead is looking forward to energizing and connecting with his fans at Mista-

hiya. He will perform “Oh Carolina,” written this year, a song about identity, which delves into being oneself while in a relationship.

“Fear Has No Place Here,” a song written for his ex-stepdaughter who suffered from severe anxiety is on his list, as well as “Wade in the Water,” an older tune with Gospel undertones, dealing with the journey into faith.

As to Stead’s favourite, it is “Dance the Night Away,” a song to honour his grandparents who passed away in the last couple of years.

Sam Stead, 90, and Anne Stead,89, were devoted to each other and to square dancing. “Dance the Night Away” is about how they met and loved to dance.

Stead’s latest, “Unfinished,” was written while he was going through a divorce.

Eureka! Mary Lambert Sings To Children During Summer Reading Program Nicole Crossan Reporter

“What does Eureka! (the theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program) mean?” Mary Lambert asked her young audience.

One answered “happiness for reading,” another said “Hooray! for reading.” The dictionary defines it as a cry of joy or satisfaction when one discovers something.

“In summertime, while on the beach, Mary discovers a box with orange wrapping sitting on the bottom of the lake. She pulls it out and opens it.

Inside is…“The Thing!” Mary used this story to introduce one of her songs and proceeded to sing it without further explanation.

Born in Bracebridge, Ontario where there are lots of black flies just before the summer gets really hot, Mary Lambert seems to have a song for everything. She has a song that chases away both the black flies of Ontario and the mosquitoes of Alberta and another that chases away the rain. (Some farmers in Vermilion have been known to need a song like this once in a while.)

Lambert’s show is for everyone, “from 1-102 years old,” she said.

She now lives in Calmar, Alberta which is a small town just outside Leduc where she moved two and a half years ago from Kingston, Ontario.

She has been to Vermilion twice and is scheduled to return in November.

The venue will be announced on her website soon.

While she sang, Mary hopped in and out from behind a bright pink and gold folding wall, surprising the children by hurling hats in the air and coming out with a new costume each time. One of these costumes was a sun hat with large, stylish, glittering pink sunglasses-perfect for the beach.

As Mary tried to wrap up the song about “The Thing” in the large, orange box, the audience could hear her struggling to keep “The Thing” under control behind the partition. She came out looking exasperated and brushing

off her hands as though she had had to contend with a giant enemy back there. She began to introduce the next song without further explanation, but the children won’t let her! They joyfully demanded to know what “The Thing” was in the box.

“Now I am going to tell you in a very quiet voice, and I’m only going to say it once, so everyone better listen. “The Thing” is—” She pauses for effect, “The Thing.” That’s its name.”

Besides the folding wall, Mary Lambert’s display includes a giant purple box decorated with flowers and titled ‘Mary’s Stuff’.

During the show, she pulls out a black top hat to teach the audience how to dance, and rain gear to protect herself from the…rain? To keep the rain from falling, Mary Lambert pulls out a shiny yellow rain jacket and matching hat followed by her favorite ladybug umbrella…which is a little pokey and— the children point out—won’t keep off much of the rain until it gets fixed.

There are barnyard animals that learn how to sing. Carley is chosen to be the adult rooster leading the turkey, donkey, puppy, and…a giraffe? Is that a barnyard animal? We don’t know because all it says is…nothing.

Throughout the show, we discover four reasons why Mary Lambert loves music. One is that you can have a song for every occasion. Another is that it “allows you to be creative,” she explains,

as she pulls a red velvet satchel hanging from a golden rod and filled with unfinished rhymes from her box of stuff.

Mary Lambert used to play the piano and the French horn, but now she prefers to use her voice as her instrument. Probably because it’s easier to carry and she is more comfortable playing her voice in front of an audience than she is playing an instrument.

The numbers don’t lie. In the case of Alberta, Budget 2014 confirmed that transfers will more than double that of 2006 levels. Alberta will receive $5.2 billion in 2014-2015 through the Canada Health Transfer and the Canada Social Transfer – a whopping 134% increase from under the previous Liberal government. By the end of the decade, stable funding agreements will see health transfers reach a record $40 billion nationwide. Again, this will be accomplished without raising taxes or downloading further responsibility to the provinces. This record is key to Canada’s long-term prosperity and to help ensure that our health care system is there for future generations of Canadians.

Since 2006, our Government has built upon a strong record for health care. Just some of our initiatives include: • investing $1 billion every year in the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and support for nearly 13,000 health researchers; • introducing tough new drug safety legislation, “Vanessa’s Law”, to help identify potentially dangerous drugs and ensure the quick recall of unsafe drugs; • introducing the Respect for Communities Act, which will give local law enforcement, municipal leaders, and local residents a voice before a permit is granted for a supervised drug consumption site; • providing over $1 billion to reduce wait times; • achieving the highest level of physicians per capita in recent history; • introducing student loan forgiveness for doctors and nurses who work in remote and rural communities;

• passing the Consumer Product Safety Act to provide the tools needed to keep unsafe products off store shelves; • investing up to $500 million through Canada’s Economic Action Plan to establish electronic health records; • introducing the Family Caregiver Tax Credit to support caregivers of infirm family members; • targeted investments of $6 million for palliative care; • investing over $1 billion for cancer research; • providing over $2 billion every year to improve the healthcare of Aboriginal Canadians; • proposing new measures for plain language labelling of drugs, and reporting requirements for adverse events; • implementing tough advertising restrictions on tobacco companies and banning the sale of flavoured tobacco that may appeal to children; and • investing nearly $200 million in obesity related research, and establishing the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit to promote healthy and active living.

Canadian health care is valued by all our friends and family as it results in stronger communities. I can assure you that our Government remains committed to a low-tax plan that also safeguards the long-term prosperity of a publicly-funded, universal health care system that is there when Canadians need it.

RCMP Remind Small Vessel Operators That Alcohol And Boats Don’t Mix

There is a great deal of confusion regarding when an individual can consume alcohol on a boat and when you can’t. Many boaters either don’t understand, or choose to ignore the legal consequences of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol.

Generally speaking, in the Province of Alberta you cannot consume or have alcohol on any boat or vessel. There is one exception to this rule but it applies only if ALL four of these conditions are met: (a) the vessel must have permanent sleeping facilities; (b) the vessel must have permanent cooking facilities; (c) the vessel must have a permanent toilet which is secured to the vessel; and (d) the vessel must be anchored or secured alongside a dock.

If ANY of these four conditions are not met then you are not permitted to

possess or consume alcohol on that vessel. Contrary to popular belief it does not matter how many individuals are on board, the quantity of alcohol on board, the type of vessel (eg.

Pontoon boat vs. open bow runabout) or whether the containers are opened or sealed. The simple reality is that if all of those conditions are not met, it is unlawful to consume or possess alcohol on that boat. Those who choose to break the law and operate while impaired face the same criminal consequences as if they were operating a motor vehicle on a public highway. Penalties can range from a minimum $1000 fine to up to 120 days of imprisonment for a third offence. In addition to this, any injuries or fatalities attributed to your actions can expose you to civil lawsuits and place your insurance coverage at risk.

That is the legal background. Ethically speaking, did you know that alcohol plays a role in about 40% of the estimated 150 recreational boating fatalities that occur in Canada each year? (Source: MADD Canada) Yet despite the obvious risks, 37% of boaters admit to consuming alcohol every time they boat, and 66% say they consume alcohol some of the time. This has to change. The RCMP encourages boaters to have a good time, but while you’re doing that don’t forget the rules of small vessel operation particularly as they relate to alcohol use. Remembering Vermilion’s Proud Past Elina Castro Editor

It is an extraordinary experience to meet the people who, in a selfless act, will set in motion and patiently bring a project to completion for the benefit of their community.

I recently met with Gwen and Tom Kibblewhite, members of the group I call Vermilion’s “Eleven”. The group is responsible for the design, building and installation of an elegant sign marking the site of the original Bowtell Breage settlement of 1903.

As an uprooted person whose history lives far away, I have grown a keen sense of history. I believe that any community, no matter where it is located or how it has developed, needs its historians, its chroniclers and writers to keep alive that sense of history which tends to fade at times, as a result of our fast, busy lives and the fact that the present is complex enough.

1903 —Those were the days of carts and wagons, of log cabins, sod roofs and endless landscapes, when Bowtell Breage was located in Saskatchewan, until 1905, when the first 10 ranges west of the 4th merid-

ian became part of Alberta.

A glimpse at the past is usually comforting, albeit a few shudders while looking at the photos of open carts in the snow. But those were the old days and the Homesteaders were more resilient than we are today. To them, the future lay ahead as huge and bright as a prairie sky.

And there was nothing to hold them back from pressing on and building the future.

And so they did, and they moved forward with such energy that, once installed in its present site, the village of Vermilion became a town within six months. Matt Brimacombe

became the town’s first Mayor, and the first Town Council assembled in 1907.

Vermilion has a long and proud history. And it is up to us to keep it alive. But when we are too busy to look back, it is a boon to have the selfless ones who will bring history to us served on a plate—or a sign if you will—for the benefit of the entire community. I am convinced that the town’s descendants will be grateful to the Vermilion “Eleven”. I know I am.

Letter To The Editor c o n s e r va t i ve r e c o r d o n accountability continues to right liberal wrongs Dear Editor, Contrary to opinions made by Liberal leader Justin Trudeau in a recent letter to the editor, our Conservative Government has been committed since taking office to ensuring that government is transparent and accountable to Canadians. When we first took office, taxpayers’ trust in government was at a low because of the Liberal Sponsorship Scandal. That’s why our first order of business was the landmark Federal Accountability Act. This comprehensive anti-corruption

legislation introduced important steps to strengthen accountability, and increase transparency and oversight in government operations. It put an end to corporate and union political contributions and ensured that politicians could not be “bought.”

We didn’t stop there. We’ve brought in new levels of transparency to MP expenditures through the MP expense disclosure form. Coupled with reduced budgets and travel as a government, the MP pension plan has been reformed, reducing the cost of ministerial travel on government aircraft by 75% compared to when the Liberals held office. Furthermore, we expanded the powers of Offi-

cers of Parliament and created the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner and the Commissioner of Lobbying, brining unprecedented levels of oversight to Parliament’s operations.

Now our Government is taking further action through the Open Government Action Plan. We’ve committed to a government-wide directive that will make government information and data available to the public by default unless it falls under specific criteria for exception; expanding access to Open Data; engaging Canadians through modernized web tools; and further engaging the public on regulatory reform.

And, despite what the Liberals may

claim, our Plan has increased Access to Information requests over the former Liberal government and has made them simpler for Canadians. Fourteen government departments now use the Access to Information and Privacy Request tool which, as of January, has enabled 21,000 Canadians to submit their requests online.

Canadians can be confident that our Government will continue to work on their behalf to further protect accountability in politics.

It’s only 1 Ah but, Is it really only 1? In the year 2012, we had a record 5,000 plus people attending the Vermilion Fair, and that means people over the age of 6 and does not include the increase in attendance of up to 30% who enter after 9 p.m., free of charge.

Let’s look at some numbers. Let’s say most people who attend the Fair are on the grounds for at least a meal and a snack and, if each person leaves behind a piece of garbage accidentally or intentionally, after each event, that would be 10,000 pieces of garbage!

I know a large number of us make sure that we put our garbage in the bins, but there are those who don’t, and they leave more than enough behind that this scenario isn’t too farfetched.

In 2012, I had 17 people walk the Fair Grounds, parking lots, and camping areas to pick up garbage, and in the 3 days of cleanup we accumulated 115:05 hours! If I break it down, that means over the period of the 3-day cleanup, each Girl Guide walked just over 6 hours pick-

ing up garbage. So: Is it really only 1?

Now knowing how many hours go into picking up the garbage off the grounds I would like to share the girls’ frustration about the fact that people feel it is OK to take the recyclables.

Yes, the girls get paid to pick up the garbage but it is a dirty, dirty job and the recyclables are the bonus for picking up those soggy fry containers, discarded hamburgers, half bag of donuts, shells from nuts and dirty diapers etc.

Let’s look at some numbers here too. In a grocery shopping bag one can generally fit in 27 water bottles or 35 cans and in a household garbage bag, 80 items. And for those of you who took the industrial garbage bags out of the recycling bins it would be more than double the 80! So over the 3 days, if 10 shopping bags were taken each day, it would mean that $81-$105 were taken from the Non-profit organization doing the cleanup.

Now, over the same 3 days: if 10 garbage bags were taken, that would be $240. And for those who lifted the bags

out of the bins you would have taken at least $480 per bag from the non-profit organization which happens to be the Girl Guides this year. The girls have to sell a lot of cookies, pizzas or labels etc. to make up the kind of money they need to go on their trip to Europe in 2016.

Once again I ask: Is it really only 1?

Here are some of the questions the girls asked me, which I am unable to answer.

“Why do people insist on overfilling a garbage bin when there is another empty bin right there?”

“Why do people throw their garbage into the recycling bins when there is a garbage bin less than 15 feet away?”

“Why would people take the time to fold up their plate or squish up their cup in order to fit it into the small round hole of the recycling bin?”

“Why would people throw their garbage into the farm machinery on display?”

The days of August are already slipping by me like tele phone poles along the highway, and already at the first of the week I’ve heard a familiar sound that awakens my wilderness side.

I looked to the heavens above and saw my first big flock of geese, all the spring new born, joining the flock, full size and flying like they have been doing it for years.

I had to stop, stand there and stare at the spectacle like I never saw it before. Except for the occasional “Honk”, they were so graceful and silent as they glided through the heavens in a big V formation.

As gratifying as that sight and experience is to me, I also know what that means, fall is quickly approaching and sights like that also remind that bow hunting season is right around the corner.

So things get very busy for me, but time flies, I am so busy working on other shooters set ups, I have to really work hard to even find time for my own set up and equipment.

I have sever al great o utd o or adventures in mind, all I have to do is find the time, but like I mentioned … I was just in the garden the other day… and I was shocked at what a jungle that was.

The corn is taller than me already.

I cannot tell one potato plant from another because they are so big, and fluffy, and with that of course the weeds are nasty after a couple of weeks’ neglect. I just can’t find the time.

So I made time and slaved at it … after several full quad trailer loads of weed yanking, I can finally see some paths. For a while there I thought I was on a jungle adventure and was going to be consumed by maneating plants.

As a reward for all my hard work, I thought I would fantasize about them fresh-dug garden tater nuggets, then I thought … enough of that fantasizing crap I am gonna get me some.

I got a one gallon/4 ltr. size strainer and was getting supper. I had to dig every hill up—one shovelfull, and I stared in horror … no little nuggets … rather … huge full-grown potatoes.

O M G I m i s se d t he new ba by potato size already, with another shovelfull the container was full, and that was only one-third of a hill of the

famed Stratton Super hills ….

There is another bumper crop coming this year, and though the potatoes are big, they are still freshly dug potatoes, washed off with a new metal scrub pad and tossed in the pot.

Ohhhhh! Ok, I finally figured it out: There is no difference in total excellence of mouth-watering taste — baby potatoes are simply an excuse to dig them up sooner.

I planted at least 52+ hills, one hill a week for an entire year, with leftover for seed potatoes, and it looks like that will be an easy task already.

A couple of hills now will provide us with tasty morsels until September.

I always plant a couple of extra hills to fill up a large milk crate to take to the cabin for bow season. Meals there are half the adventure: fresh

dug taters, carrots and onions, and BBQ choice wild game harvested the year before.

I had planned on holding a weekend long Wilderness Survival course this summer for the general public, but it looks like I will have to postpone it until next summer.

I will have plenty of time hopefully as of today, August 8th which will be a countdown to one year, August 8th 2015, when I will have the exact combined years of service/work plus age to retire.

T h at m e a n s I h ave 3 5 ye ar s of working for the Department of National Defence plus my seemingly older than dirt age. I should be elated but I haven’t had time to think about it.

meadow watching the sun rise or set, I will have plenty of time to think and plan.

One plug for the PRO side would be the endless outdoor adventures I could enjoy. I am a little young for full retirement, as tempting as it looks, but I am sure I can find things to fund further adventures.

I think ever y l a st c reature of any consequence has a built-in will to survive. It’s instinctive without any thought or reflex action.

In earlier times we all had to have a ready reflex ability in hunting for our food, to avoid anything our prey did to, keep us from succeeding at getting the best of them. I guess that would keep our senses really tuned up and ready, you think?

I guess the more civilized we become, the less likely we’d need that kind of response at the ready. Well, you’d think so wouldn’t you? Do you remember handling young unbroken horses that used to run wild, and how they’d react if you came up unannounced from behind? You would certainly learn very quickly what to do if you figured to live to an older age. These horses’ survival required that they resisted anything coming suddenly up from behind. That’s how their enemies got to them, remem-

ber!!

So if you didn’t let your horse know who you were in lots of time, he may just take you for that enemy who wished to eat him. Instinct took over and he’d react instinctively. I’m sure if you were around a horse that was common knowledge.

Seems a skunk or porcupine have a built-in defensive system and effectively keep many predators at bay. Almost any wild creature wants to survive and it will fight with tooth or claw to survive long enough to perpetuate its species.

In our histories we have learned of many species that didn’t have any serious means of turning away these aggressive attacks and they simply are just fossils or just stuffed reminders in a museum somewhere. The way things are going, you’d almost think the human race is on a hell-bent course to extinction with the way they carry on.

It seems that the element of fear has given way to carelessness and the adrenalin that fear produces goes unemployed until it’s too late!! The sense of fear, and the adrenalin that came from fright, caused horses and similar beasts to put on all speed to escape, beavers

to slap their tails to warn their family members and every creature had their unique defense mechanism readied for use in a life or death struggle.

While the possibility of violence seems to be escalating in our society, the more insidious danger seems to be our eating and drinking habits that are so undermining our health and welfare and are killing us off at an earlier age all the time. Our health systems are being overwhelmed on all sides and we resist any effort, it seems, to come to grips with the basic idea that our health depends on our eating habits. Do we need to be taught what to fear anymore to know where the dangers really lie?

I guess our highways and byways would be safer too if folks had less fear of being late, and more fear of being hurt or killed. You’d think after a day’s drive almost anywhere that a lot of drivers are simply not aware that any slight miscalculations on their part could cause them, in seconds, to put others on the road in desperate danger. All things being equal, there are so many dangers present already on the crowded highways you’d think normal reasonable

people would be very apprehensive about adding any other dangers to the mix, like distracted driving. There are all sorts of those, aren’t there? Then add the different impairments that seem to take away the fear of the danger present in activity like that.

I think healthy fear is a good thing if it could make us more careful, patient, and understanding that we ALL want to get where we’re going and not be in such a damn hurry to be somewhere else. That somewhere may be your final resting place.

I remember the care I used when getting ready to take off in my little plane, and how all things mattered so critically.

We need to apply that kind of feeling in all our activities whether it’s driving, walking, or crossing streets. Whether it’s learning how to minimize accidents in our homes, we must always be somewhat fearful of the consequences of any type of carelessness, smoking included.

Life’s got no guarantees that I’ve heard of, so if you aren’t careful or lucky, you won’t have trouble blowing out all the candles you might have on your last birthday!!

I have nothing but respect for ALL the instructors and the variety of different martial arts schools in this town, they are all fantastic and I encourage you all to check them out, and if you decide on one particular martial art, learn all you can, train faithfully and remember, to bash another style or to put another style down does nothing but closes the door to learning something new that could, one day, potentially save your life.

It was 30 years ago this month that I began training in the martial arts and I’ve learned a great many things since I began my journey.

In August 1984 I started training in Shotokan Karate in Maple Ridge BC and since then I’ve trained in western boxing, 2 different styles of Karate, Arnis (Filipino stick fighting), Aki-Jitsu (Akido/Jiu-Jitsu mix), Kick boxing, various forms of police defensive tactics training and finally Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.

I have had a great many instructors throughout my 30 years and I’ve learned that every style has something to offer. To say “This style or that style is the only true style.” or “Mine is better than this one or that one.” is to diminish your training and narrows your ability to grow as a martial artist. Just through my training alone I have learned that I have SO much still to learn, I also have so much to teach and offer, just like every instructor who loves teaching.

Don’t allow yourself to get caught up in the narrow mindset that “This is the only style that’s any good.” Remember, you will never stop learning and a true martial artist learns all they can from whoever is willing to teach them. You take what works for you, the techniques that work for your body style and make them your own and keep the rest of the techniques in your arsenal as a “nice to know technique”.

A student picks a style for their own reasons and if that style fulfills those needs then that is the style that is best

S a n g r i a is a lovely and refreshing drink that is p er fe c t for b ot h summer and holiday entertaining.

Sangria is a type of wine punch in which a red wine such as a cabernet sauvignon or a merlot is infused with fresh fruit, fruit juice and additional liquor. It is then served chilled over ice with either ginger ale, 7 up or club soda. If a white wine is used then it is called sangria Blanco, which means white sangria. If the fruit used is peaches and nectarines, then it is called zurra. Sangria has its origins in Spain and Portugal.

The fruit can be marinated in the

wine for as little as a few hours, or up to a full day. While the fruit and the fruit juice provide natural sweetening, a small amount of additional sugar can be added if you like your drink a little sweeter.

Like many regional foods, there is no one specific recipe and it is often adapted to available fruit and personal preference. Various fruits can be used to make sangria. By adding fresh citrus fruit to the wine, both the vitamin C content and antioxidant benefit is increased.

Red wine has many health benefits when consumed in moderation.

Moderation is considered to be 4 to 8 ounces a day. Some of the benefits of red wine are a decrease in depression, healthier blood vessels, 50 percent decrease in the risk of bowel tumours, and a reduced risk of

breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Further studies on red wine have also shown promise in aiding in insulin regulation, raising levels of omega 3 fatty acids and in aiding in preventing dementia.

Red wine is a good source of resveratrol. Reveratrol is known to increase life span according to researchers from Harvard Medical School.

For well over a thousand years, monks have attributed their longer that average life span to their moderate consumption of red wine.

With all the health benefits, turning red wine into sangria can make any day a celebration. For this recipe I used Naked Grape cabernet sauvignon, and Triple Sec but you can use any wine you like.

Sangria 1 750 ml bottle of red wine 1 orange sliced 1 lemon sliced 1 lime sliced 1 cup pineapple chunks 1/4 cup of liquor (see note) 1/4 cup orange juice 1 cup cranberry juice 1 litre ginger ale (or club soda) Ice to serve Combine all of the ingredients except the ginger ale and ice. Allow the flavor to blend for 2 to 12 hours.

Pour or ladle the sangria over ice into a glass. Just before serving add the ginger ale or club soda and add some of the fruit to each glass. Note that the liquor used may be 1/4 cup of any of the following: Triple Sec, Grand Marnier, gin, brandy or rum.

Sign Commemorating “Breage” Put In Place Allen Ronaghan Submitted

On Sunday, August 3, a group of friendly people gathered east of Vermilion to watch several men set in place a sign commemorating “Breage”, the first location of the future Vermilion.

The sign had been prepared by a committee last summer and only awaited preparation of a site by the County of Vermilion River, which had given its permission. This preparation was completed recently, making it possible for the committee to complete its project. In less than two hours, the sign was in place.

Culinary Tour Visits Vermilion Elina Castro Reporter

The Eat East of Edmonton (EEE) Culinary Tour, launched in Wainwright one month ago sprang from an agreement between the Regional Tourism Organization and the Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance.

The Tour was designed for east central Alberta, the most rural area of the province, with the goal of developing a collaborative program that enables tourists to experience the bounty of the region. The Culinary Trail this summer is contained within Highways 13, 14, 16 and 41.

“We try to connect with people and businesses, and encourage them to join the program with the idea of finding those hidden culinary treasures in the different counties,” said Gord Snyder, Chair of the Go East Regional Tourism Organization.

Heading the Tour was Gail Hall, renowned Chef, and founder of the

cooking school, “Seasoned Solutions.” Hall visited Vermilion on July 18 with 13 tour members, cooking up a storm at Anthony’s Classic Grill and viewing the Jerusalem artichoke fields at Lakeland College.

Followed by the keen eye of the CTV network cameras, Hall gave an enjoyable cooking class producing a scrumptious Greek Salad with the freshest ingredients. Anthony’s co-owner, A.J. MacPhee, marvelled at Hall’s easy-going style.

“The class was wonderful. Gail is such a warm person that I would feel comfortable cooking with her anywhere.”

The Tour visited the Jerusalem artichoke fields at Lakeland College.

This perennial vegetable has been drawing interest in growers for the high concentration of inulin (a healthy carbohydrate, according to some health food connoiseurs) and fructose in its tubers.

Mannville Library presents Dan In The Balloon Man Every year the Mannville Public Library puts on summer entertainment and on August 6, they played host to Dan the Balloon Man. Young and old alike were fascinated by the characters Dan created and some of the lucky ones were able to take home his creations ranging from Popeye, Ariel, Sylvester the Cat, a monkey on a palm tree, a princess crown plus many more.

Approximately 70 people came to enjoy the entertainment. After the show the crowd was treated to a hotdog lunch, compliments of the Library.

Canada’s Prairies Awash in Rebellion During 1885 Wayne F. Brown Submitted The buffalo were gone from the plains and day to day life of the once nomadic First Nations people was nothing less than desperate. With small game as the main source of food, clothing and shelter these once noble people were forced to drastic measures in an attempt to save themselves from slow death.

The government promises listed in the treaties proved to be lies and the people who were to help them proved tyrannical. This set the scene for the revenge murders of nine white men in the small settlement of Frog Lake on April 2, 1885; this brutal act became known as the “Frog Lake Massacre.” Just days before, a confrontation between the Métis, led by Louis Riel and North West Mounted Police under the command of Inspector Leif Crozier at Duck Lake, east in Saskatchewan set Canada’s west afire in the Northwest Rebellion.

Middleton himself would march on the Métis stronghold of Batoche and engage the Métis, thus quashing all resistance and ending the rebellion.

In the western segment, General Strange assembled about 1600 men in Calgary and set out north, past Red Deer to Edmonton, arriving on May 1st.

He then split his force, half to float the river in scows, the remaining marching east along the northern arm of the Carlton Trail, both arriving at Ft. Pitt on May 26th. Members of Steele’s Scouts located the Cree. The next day, Strange moved his depleted force of about 400 soldiers into position to attack the defensives of the 350 Cree Warriors in the early hours of May 28, 1885.

The Center’s Log Cabin Tea-house acts as the focal point of the museum operations, providing non-alcoholic refreshments and light lunches to visitors. The facility opens at 10:00 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. each day during the summer months. They also operate on weekends only during the spring

Heritage Center will hold their Annual Museum Festival Day on Sunday, August 10th. Being a Sunday, they commence the festivities with an open air interdenominational Church Service at 10:00 a.m. The huge variety of events, displays, demonstrations, live stage entertainment and gigantic silent auction are held during the day. At 1:00 p.m. these events suspend operation while their annual parade promenades along the complex’s main street.

This year, the organization welcomes a new exhibit for the visitor to explore, that of a 1903 Case steam-powered tractor. This behemoth, located in the machine shed, is in running condition, but not “certified.”

learning of this incident, the Queen’s soldiers would eventually come in retribution. They struck camp on the south end of the lake and moved to Fort Pitt, arriving on the hill overlooking the fort on April 14th. In a move to avoid further bloodshed, Wandering Spirit spread his mounted warriors across the horizon in front of the fearful occupants of the fort, thus intimidated the occupants into surrender. Chief Trader, William McLean knew defending the fort was futile, so he negotiated a capitulation with Wandering Spirit, to which the civilians of the fort became Cree prisoners while the N.W.M.P. detachment would be allowed to escape downriver to Ft. Battleford. The old Hudson Bay post, originally built in 1829 was sacked and burned by the Cree that night.

The Cree at Ft. Pitt were to be suppressed by General T. B. Strange who would assemble a force in Calgary, march to Edmonton, then continue downstream along the North Saskatchewan to Fort Pitt. The natives responded to the threat by splitting into small groups to foil the pursuit. Some moved across country toward Cold Lake. Others moved southward to the United States, while a third group fled northward toward the Goodsoil area. Here they released all their hostages/prisoners, allowing them to return to Fort Pitt. With scouting reports of the prisoners free and the enemy dispersed, there was no longer an enemy to fight. General Middleton ordered a withdrawal. The Northwest Rebellion was at a conclusion when the troops boarded the paddle-wheeled river boats tied up at Fort Pitt to return east and home. The adventure of a life-

Canada is a country of freedom and acceptance. People from around the world see Canada as a wonderful place of opportunity and great quality of life. Even in a country as great as ours, there are times in our history that we are not proud of events that transpired.

One example of this would be Canada’s first national internments

There was no evidence of disloyalty on their part and the British Foreign Office informed Ottawa that eastern Europeans were “friendly aliens” and should be given “preferential treatment”. This, of course, did not occur.

Tens of thousands of others were regarded as enemy aliens and were obliged to carry identity documents and report regularly to the police. Disenfranchisement; restrictions of freedom of speech, movement, and association; deportation and confiscation of possessions also occurred to many immigrants.

It is interesting to note that some of these camps were located in the national parks found in the Rocky Mountains such as Banff and Jasper.

The internees that were forced to labour here were instrumental in developing the roads and visitor facilities that are enjoyed by Canadian and international tourists today.

If You Think You Know Cancer, Think Again

NewsCanada Submitted (NC) Cancer isn’t always a matter of life and death. Today, an increasing number of Canadians are living with the disease, but as a chronic condition and that can come with ongoing side effects.

“The fact is, 63 per cent of Canadian cancer patients live longer than five years after diagnosis, and if a patient survives past one year, that number rises to 81 per cent,” says Jackie Manthorne, president and CEO of the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN).

But while survival rates are improving, many of us think that only 47 per cent of cancer patients survive longer than five years, according to a recent survey commissioned by CCSN. The reality is that cancer patients are living longer, but they can experience side effects – such as pain, low immunity, lymphedema, heart disease, bone loss, and arthritis – that can last for years.

The survey also showed that 70 per cent of respondents either don’t know how long the side effects last, or think they only last a few days, weeks, or months. However, these side effects can last for years and have a significant impact on a patient’s quality of life.

“Canadians have great hope when it comes to finding a cure for cancer,” Manthorne continues. “In fact, 66 per cent of us believe that a cure will be found within a generation. But until that time, we need to continue to provide support for patients throughout their cancer journey – from diagnosis through to post-treatment side effects.”

Manthorne points out that because most of us are less aware of cancer as a chronic condition, the health care system is not responding to the shift in survival rates and doesn’t meet the need for better treatment and support for patients.

“The cancer treatment journey is radically different today from what it was even 15 years ago,” says Dr. Sandy Sehdev, medical oncologist at William Osler Health Centre in Brampton, Ont. “We’re starting to see that patients are living longer, which is promising, but it means that they will continue to be reliant on therapies to manage ongoing side effects and complications.”

youngsters aged 6 - 8 years who are interested in 4-H. Not officially members until age 9, they can still raise an animal, learn all about training and caring for an animal.

We have four Cleavers: three are raising sheep, and one is raising a goat. The year has been very successful so far with the members taking part in club meetings, work-

one of our members’ farms. The Allens live near Irma, and have a variety of animals. The kids got close to ducks, rabbits, peacocks, geese, goats, a pot-bellied pig and some rode “Fat Boy” a miniature horse.

It was a fun morning and the kids had a wiener roast and picnic lunch.

A public hearing has been scheduled for Monday, August 18, 2014 at 2:45 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the County of Minburn No. 27 located at 4909 – 50 Street, Vegreville, AB. The purpose of the hearing is to allow persons to make known their views with respect to the proposed amending bylaws, Bylaw No. 1234-14 and Bylaw No. 1235-14.

Written comments regarding the proposed amending bylaws may be dropped off or mailed to the County of Minburn No. 27 at Box 550, 4909 – 50 Street, Vegreville, AB, T9C 1R6 until 4:30 p.m., Friday, August 15, 2014. A: I recently read an article by a prominent inspector that

confused this issue as well. My understanding and opinion is that you want to initially seal the tile with a proper deep penetrating grout sealer during the install. There are many polymer type grouts out there that help keep the water out. None the less I would reseal the grout about every six months to a year. The idea that we should not seal the grout so the tile can breathe makes very little sense to me, it like closing the door after the cat runs out. If in doubt contact a tile expert as I have to clear up this issue.

The parking lot expands into a long flat piece of the field about a mile beyond the log-fenced line where the original parking lot ends.

Everyone working there is a volunteer dressed up in period costume.

Visitors are welcomed with a schedule of events brought to their windows as they drive up the gravel road towards the site, then ushered into the most convenient, available parking space for their needs, and finally told to wait for one of the tractor and wagon trains to pick them up and drive them into the Haying in the 30s town site.

It looks just as one would imagine a town to look in the 30s--except for sights and sounds of such modern adornments as cell phones and Tim Horton’s

coffee cups--hardly noticeable in such a well laid out setup.

Outlining the town is a ring of fully decorated buildings such as the general store, barber, blacksmith, schoolhouse, log home, NWMP jail, sewing shop, church, and more. All have decor or shelves filled with goods that would have been sold and used in the 30s.

In the midst of all these buildings, the action happens. Children line up by age group for the three-legged race and other children’s games, while siblings and friends line up to create their own piece of rope from baler twine. Children can ride on the carousel of ponies, get their faces painted, and learn so many ways things were done back in the 30s.

In the August heat, line-ups of children and adults visit the hand-cranked ice cream makers and butter churns.

In past events, visitors were offered the opportunity to help make their own ice cream and butter. Today everyone in line gets a cup of fresh ice cream and a mini spoon, and they can choose

whether to eat the fresh crackers with homemade butter.

As visitors walk throughout the different sections of the Village, their senses are filled with the different sounds and smells of the past. There is the sound of horses’ hooves clopping along as covered wagon rides travel down the trails in the “outback.” There are three live music bands playing at all times.

There is the smell of freshly cut grain, as the Thrashing Machine goes to work, mingled with the sound of wood being chopped into shingles. You can walk along the trapper’s trail and see labeled traps used by people long ago.

As families make their way around the circle of buildings, the volunteers are kind and helpful. It seems that, before one can think of asking for help, there is someone there to offer assistance. One is left to wonder, “Is this how people treated one another back then?” and “Wouldn’t it be nice if...”

A family historian, who sits sweating out the heat in the barber shop and making joyful conversation, offers a perspective on daily life: “The farm women in those times worked hard.

scratch. The only items our family and others purchased from the grocery store nine miles away when I was a young girl were flour and sugar.”

Haying in the 30s is a free event. Visitors are asked for a donation to support families whose lives have been turned upside down.

The Haying in the 30s Society has donated money to over 3, 800 families and individuals who were unable to cope with the costs of cancer medication and treatments.

On Sunday August 3, a group of 8 local residents and three neighbours from Vegreville met among Vermilion’s scenic hills to commemorate the site of the original settlement.

The settlement was initially called Bowtell Breage after Land Guide Harry

Bowtell. For two years they waited for the railway to arrive. But in 1905, when the railway finally settled down in its present location, the founding fathers jacked up the buildings and brought them over here.

So it was up to Vermilion’s “Eleven” to set the sign that reminds us where the original town was, a project set in motion by the late Ed Brimacombe,

Wild Pink Yonder Rides Through Vermilion

You may have seen the pink donation cans around town at the local businesses, or perhaps are familiar with the ‘Wild Pink Yonder’ annual fundraising event for breast cancer research, funded by the Alberta Cancer Foundation. This event includes a 23 day Trail Ride on horseback, through 22 towns in Alberta, to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Along with the trail ride a contest is held for the visited towns, to be named ‘The Pinkest Little Town in the West’.

Wild Pink Yonder began when founder Jane Hurl, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. Hurl felt she wanted to give back for all the support and help she received during her battle with cancer. A cancer ‘warrior’ is how Hurl describes herself, explaining that until there is a cure, she feels she has never truly beaten or survived breast cancer.

The 2014 tour began in Lloydminster on August 8, and will continue on Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail for a 23 day adventure which will take the group to Edmon-

ton, where they will ride from WELCA (Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association) in Edmonton’s river valley to the Cross Cancer Institute to deliver the Wild Pink Yonder flag that signifies the end of another year of fundraising, as stated on the website www.wildpinkyonder.com.

Before heading off for the trek a kickoff party took place in Lloydminster on August 8, which included horse games, buffet supper along with a bar, and prizes. After supper “Play it Pink”, a Battle of the Country Bands took place. Rusty Hurl the event manager, who is Jane Hurl’s son, said the event was great and the first place winner was Jordyn Pollard who won airtime on Lloyd FM’s radio station.

The riders stopped in Vermilion on August 9 and 10, where they set up camp at the Agricultural Fair grounds.

Rusty spoke about their plans while in Vermilion. “Tonight we are going on a trail ride on a local resident’s private property, who generously donated his time for us, and then in the morning we will go on a ride through the Provincial Park”.

Donations were accepted, as well as pink commemorative items were for sale with all of the proceeds going towards the cause. Hot Dogs and refreshments were served to the crowd. “Troll” one of the Hurl’s loyal horse companions, was at the site as well providing entertainment for the little ones and posing for pictures.

says Rusty. The group has raised an outstanding sum of $633,000 over the last 5 years of the event for the Cross Cancer Institue in Edmonton, as directed by the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The journey is far from over but the work being done for this event and the amount of donations being received is a true testament of team work and generosity.

CSI Showcases Research Projects During Crop Field Tour Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Lakeland College houses many dif ferent researc h projec ts. O n August 5, the CSI (Centre for Sustainable Innovation), of Lakeland College hosted a crop research field tour of their agricultural projects.

This tour showcased soybeans and fava bean demonstration plots, field peas input intensity trials, wheat strip trials, canola strip trials, Jerusalem artichoke-novel crop trials and biochar production.

This research is based on a grant funded from a government organization named Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). NSERC states on their website that their goal is to help make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians. With the help of this grant as well as sponsorships, Lakeland College has had the opportunity to conduct some cutting edge research right here in Vermilion.

L ar r y B i n g h am, Ag r i c u l tur a l Research Project Coordinator, spoke about the projects during his stop at the Field Pea management site at the time of the tour. Describing their principal activity which is the input intensity trial Bingham explained.

“This is our first year of the input intensity trial. In this day and age there are all sorts of inputs that farmers can apply to their crops, such as herbicides, fertilizers, micro-nutrients, fungicides, insecticides, and so on.

Although each one of them is proven through research to be individually beneficial, the question is, what if we used all of them? Would you get an economic payback?” There has not been much research done in this regard,” stated Bingham. “So what we are doing is trying to utilize differ-

ent levels of these outputs, and find one that will put net pay in a farmers pocket.”

This four year project will commence the same time next year, following a farmer’s normal crop rotation. There are three co-operating producers along with the College’s student managed farms in the region that have replicated this identical trial, they are McLaughlin Agri-Ventures, Gundiwindi Farms and Sherwood Farms. All of these producers will replicate the trial to get an accurate result in a range suitable for the region’s conditions.

An 18 acre plot has been divided into three areas, and established what they call Baseline management producers, Midrange management producers and Intensive management producers. Records are being kept and the results will be calculated at the end of the year.

“The grant we received last year for this research has helped us to hire staff such as summer student technicians, and allow some current staff to take on projects from the research as well” Bingham said, describing how this research has created new jobs in the community.

Moving across the road from the pea trials there are wheat and cereal variety plots. Information on these trials can be found on the College’s website: www.lakelandcollege.ca/ applied-research. These are primarily demonstration sites although some yield data will be gathered.

Along the tour some various other crops were being featured to the tourists such as fava Beans and soy bean plots. These two beans are known more to grow in southern latitudes although the research group decided to try them in this area. Also part of the tour were some canola variety plots.

A unique trial is the Jerusalem artichokes, which are being grown and research is being conducted, to see if this plant can be grown for commercial use.

This artichoke is a member of the sunflower family. Standing now at about five feet tall, this plant will reach eight or so feet by the end of the season. The artichoke stores a particular type of starch in its top growth and like all starches converts to a sugar.

Research is being done to see if this artichokes’ starch has the potential for use as a nutraceutical (a combination of “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical”) that would be beneficial to people with special dietary needs.

With the Jerusalem artichoke is “It is not a crop that has ever been grown, probably anywhere in the world, on a commercial basis,” said Bingham.

Jerusalem artichokes are native to North America and Europe. Aboriginal people in Eastern Canada and Eastern United States, were said to use these artichokes for the food value in their tubers which store starch inside, and resemble a small misshapen potato.

These plots have always been grown by hand, and it is the job of the research team to determine if these plants can be harvested using modern day farm equipment. The Jerusalem artichoke has the potential to be what Bingham calls a “Cinderella crop”.

Thus far very little is known about this plant and Bingham is hoping for a good outcome during this five year research project.

“We have done enough research last fall to know that this plant can be harvested and the top growth bailed

for marketing. We don’t know if it will develop into something big, but you never know,” Bingham said.

Another aspect of the NSERC grant and tour is how to utilize biomaterials.

Biochar is created by burning waste products such as woodchips or waste material residue leftover from crops.

“The waste is burned in a very low oxygen environment and what it does is it volatizes, off the volatile parts of the product and leaves you with, essentially carbon which we call biochar,” explained Bingham.

What is biochar good for?

“It is kind of a new thing on the horizon that a lot of scientists are looking at now, but particularly as a soil amendment for highly disturbed and damaged soil,” replied Bingham.

E xamples are gravel pits, oil leases, all kinds of industrial sites as such, and perhaps maybe even the oil sands stated Bingham.

If biochar is added to soil it is called an amendment and what it does is promote the growth of the microorganisms that make a healthy soil.

Bingham explained how the microorganisms need carbon in their bodies so they not only consume carbon, but it provides a nice living environment for the organisms.

In summary adding biochar revitalizes damaged soil, which can be highly beneficial. Another potential use for biochar is as a medium to intercept and filter pollutant compounds in soil water. This aspect may be examined in future years.

As a last stop on the CSI tour, a demonstration of biochar in the making was given to tourists.

Minburn 21st Annual Heifer Show Minburn & District Agricultural Society presented their Bench Fair & 21st Annual Heifer Show on Saturday August 9. Pen of Three Calendar year Females and Pen of Three Yearling Females were featured. First and Second Place Pen of three winners were to be named, as well as winners for Overall Grand Champion and Overall Reserve Champion. Bonus categories of highest and second placing of home raised calves in each class also took place. A beef supper was served at the Curling Rink at 6:00 p.m. along with cocktails.
