This sport is for people who are passionate about driving horses. It takes lots of practice and discipline to get the horse and cart around the cones without touching them.

Driving pole bending has been p ra c tice d by th e m e m b e rs of th e

Alberta Carriage Driving Association (ACDA) for 20 years. The East West Chapter of the Association, a nonprofit organization, provides rides and drives, hand-on seminars, clinics and an annual driving competition, as well as a pleasure show and an indoor carriage race. The Chapter encourages new and prospective members to watch, try and participate in events.

The Heat Is On In Dewberry

Lindsey Montgomery Reporter Frog Lake/Dewberry Chuck wagon races kicked off Thursday, July 31 at the Dewberry grounds and continued throughout the weekend.

The heat was on and off the track that evening as temperatures were high until, thankfully, a cool breeze blew through the air providing some relief from the hot day.

Dust flew as the racers made their way around the track in hopes of making the finals.

Report From the Hill

Making Our Streets And Communities Safer Leon Benoit, MP Submitted An important secondar y focus of our Governm e n t (o t h e r Leon Benoit M .P. the Vegreville - Wainwright Constituency t h a n Report From the economy and jobs) over Hill the past year has been to create safer streets and communities across Canada. I am pleased to report the many accomplishments made during this past sitting that are helping to reach this goal.

A major milestone of our Governm e n t i s B i l l C-32, T h e C a n a d i a n Victims Bill of Rights. A first in Canadian history, this bill recognizes the vital role victims deserve and need to play in the criminal justice system.

The legislation seeks to grant rights for victims of physical or emotional harm, property damage, or economic loss as a result of an offence committe d un d er th e Criminal Co d e, th e Yo u t h C r i m i n a l J u s t i c e A c t , t h e Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act, or some offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. This helps deliver on action taken by Reform Members of Parliament as early as 1995. Bill C-32 is currently at second reading in the House of Commons. The statutory rights included in this bill are as follows: R i g h t to i n fo r m a ti o n: V i c ti m s would have the right to general information about the criminal justice system, available victim services and programs, as well as specific information about the progress of the case at hand.

Right to protection: Victims would have the right to have their security and privacy considered at all stages of the criminal justice process, to have reasonable and necessary measures to protect them from intimidation and retaliation, and to request their identity be protected from public disclosure.

R i g h t to p a r ti ci p a ti o n: V i c ti m s would have a right to convey their views about decisions to be made by criminal justice professionals and have them considered at various stages of the criminal justice process and to present a victim impact statement.

Right to restitution: Victims would have th e right to have the cour t consider making a restitution order for all offences for which there are easy-to-calculate financial losses.

Along with the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights, our Government has set out to pass many other initiatives this past year that I look forward to supporting come the next parliamentary sitting. These measures, while still going through the parliamentary process, will improve our justice system and help keep law-abiding Canadians safe by: Providing a stricter application process for supervised drug consumption sites that would allow for the use of what would otherwise be illegal drugs in Bill C-2, Respect for Communities Act; Advancing efforts to combat the trafficking and cross border smuggling of contraband tobacco by establishing a 50-officer RCMP Anti-Contraband Force as well as a new criminal code offence in Bill C-10, Tackling Contraband Tobacco Act; Protecting Canadians from cyberbullying by enhancing authority of the court to gather evidence and convict, as well as provide compensation for victims in Bill C-13, Protecting Canadians from Online Crime Act; Protecting Canadians from unsafe medicine by mandating more reaction reporting, better labels, and recalls on therapeutic products from Health Canada in Bill C-17, Protecting Canadians from Unsafe Drugs Act (Vanessa’s Law); Mandating stricter sentencing laws for sexual offences against children and establishing a publicly accessible database of high-risk child sex offenders in Bill C-26, Tougher Penalties for Child Predators Act; Enac tin g serious conse quences for those who harm law enforcement, service and Canadian Armed Forces animals in Bill C-35, Justice for Animals in Service Act (Quanto’s Law) and; Creating A Made-in-Canada Model that criminalizes the demand for prostitution, including laws against advertising, and communicating for the sale of sexual services next to a school, playground or daycare centre in Bill C-36, Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act. A d d i t i o n a l l y, I a m p l e a s e d to announce here that C-14, The Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act, received Royal Assent in April of this year. This new law will allow public

On Saturday, July 26th, 2014 at approximately 11:00 PM, members of the Vermilion RCMP Detachment were conducting a foot patrol of the

It has been a memorable week for me in Vermilion, with the Vermilio n Fair bringing back fond memories of the cattle show in my home town Buenos Aires, in Argentina.

Argentina’s agricultural fair is called La Rural, as in rural. It is not a regional show but a national event which goes on for two weeks. It is held every July on the 12 hectare (36 acre) grounds since the late 1800s. This year, the show hosted more than 800,000 people.

La Rural has no games, rides, minidonuts or candy floss but it does have a large area showcasing regional arts and crafts, foods and wines.

The tasting booths are extremely popular. In them, you may have an apple from Rio Negro province in the north part of Patagonia, which has an area similar to the Okanagan Valley, or you may try some quinoa from Jujuy (pronounced Hoo-hooey) province in the northwest corner of the country.

Mendoza province, further south is similar to Alberta in that its eastern face has rolling hills while its western side leans on a major mountain range.

Mendoza province produces some of the finest wines in the world, while Salta province to the north houses the high altitude bodegas with vines thriving at

3,000 meters.

Enormous quantities of food and wine are consumed in La Rural, but the real reason for the Fair is the cattle show.

Unlike the Vermilion Fair which began for people to get together and socialize, La Rural has always been focused on cattle breeding. Godzilla-sized bulls, cows and rams parade by the Judges’ area in the central Arena, but that part of the show is mostly for ranchers and breeders who watch tensely in their boots, leather coats and berets for the prize winners.

From the Grandstand, the audience watches and applauds as the cattle

show ends but, secretly, they are waiting... for the favourite event at La Rural, year after year, is the horse discipline show, usually undertaken by the Police and Armed Forces, and by traditional gauchos (cowboys) who are known for their ability to train horses by whispering in their ear.

In this event, the rider orders his horse to lie down, and walks away without looking back. The audience, spellbound, holds its collective breath, looking forward to that one horse that will lift its head and look for its departing master.

Although the horse will be penalized, it

has always drawn the longest applause.

At La Rural there are no chuck wagons or buggies. I have been dazzled by the harmony, discipline and elegance of the heavy horse events as well as by the excitement generated by the racing carts and wagons at the Vermilion Fair.

The internet edition of the Vermilion Voice has been a hit with my family.

Congratulatory messages are pouring in from Patagonia, the pampas (prairies), Salta, Buenos Aires, Mexico and the United States; and from the younger kids, a fascinated: “Look at all those cowboys!”

Dear Editor, In response to a recent letter to the editor from Liberal MP Hedy Fry on our Government’s changes to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), I wish to provide some key facts that she failed to include.

Canada has a long and proud tradition of providing protection to refugees and we will continue to do so. We are appealing the Federal Court decision on our Government’s reforms to the IFHP because it fails Canadian taxpayers and neglects genuine refugees.

We remain committed to putting the interests of Canadians and genuine refugees first. We strongly believe that failed claimants who refuse to leave Canada and individuals making asylum claims from US or the European Union should not be entitled to better health care than Canadians receive through provincial

health plans.

Under the old, broken refugee system, abuse was commonplace. Thanks to our reforms, we’ve seen the number of asylum claims from safe countries fall by 87%. This means countries truly in distress, like Afghanistan, Syria and the Congo, have resumed their place among the top ten countries for asylum claimants in Canada.

Thanks to fewer unfounded asylum claims, we have already saved taxpayers $600 million in health and social benefits, with anticipated savings of $1.5 billion over five years.

Canadians can be confident that our Conservative Government will continue to vigorously defend the interests of Canadian taxpayers and the integrity of our fair and generous refugee determination system.

Problem is, August doesn’t leave me much time to relax and enjoy unless I make a real effort to do so. It’s an extremely busy month for me, assisting bow hunters before the fast upcoming season.

September 1st will come fast, and many of us won’t be ready for it. Bow hunting season starts and children return back to of pictures, as the amount and time are school for another year.

So many of the bow hunters out there adjustable. You can set five in a row or will be ready, but that’s only because I one a minute. These particular cameras worked until many a midnight getting their are called Lil Acorns and are as small and compact as the older 35 mm cameras. archery set ups tuned perfectly.

The Lil Acorns are also great for any I enjoy working on bows except for security around your home, farm and how fast the time goes, which is also my summer. I prepare myself for bowhunting property. As I was saying, I was gathering them cameras together. I am setting some out all up to set for fall bowhunting, but I was near my tree stands first break I get.

For those that don’t know what a trail short one. I thought about the areas I had them and was sure I had picked them all camera is, I will briefly explain.

They are high tech all weather cameras, up…but oops! Another mini road trip is in more advanced than my normal digi- order.

I was sure I had picked them all up as tal camera. For about one third the cost, we visit the cameras often to check them you can use it as a normal camera or even every couple days or weeks when bow video camera.

It’s designed in a weather resistant hunting.

The cameras use a digital SD card which case, and can be triggered by motion or is just slightly larger than the size of a infra-red beams. It also has an infra-red postage stamp, and can literally record flash that people and animals can’t see.

The idea is to set it up in the wilder- thousands of pictures. I wasn’t sure if I Columnist

picked up the camera or simply switched out the SD card last Novemember.

This past weekend, Blaine my bow hunting buddy and I went for a search/ rescue mission for that particular camera.

Sure as there are red jelly beans, there it was still strapped to a tree on a trail.

The poor camera went through a hellish winter, with freezing temperatures and crazy bursts of spring rain this year. I wondered if it would even work.

The small AA batteries were understandably dead, even with the four backup batteries it can hold. Since we were there we scouted the area and had a look around all evening.

It was good to be out there, deer populations looked great even with the harsh winters, so I was curious to see what was on the camera. Back at the shop after dark, we put the SD card in the shop computer.

The card was indeed full with hundreds of pictures. By the information on the pictures, it said the pitiful lil camera hung in there, enduring brutal conditions, hanging on to every moment of life, doing its job right to the last second.

The batteries packed it in with less than a month to go, right until the very end of June. The pictures also revealed she even strived in -30C to -40C with scary winds.

Some of the higher temperature pictures were a green color rather than the full crisp color. I am amazed it even worked through that. The picture story was amazing to me.

The last time I swopped the SD card before I forgot the camera there was a light frosting of snow. Scrolling the pictures you can watch the snow get deeper and deeper…up to three feet in areas.

see a magical change, the brown world appears which seems to last an eternity.

Then the real magic happens as the green explodes and new life begins.

There were pictures of whitetail deer, mule deer, moose, coyotes, rabbits and even some nightime pictures where you can only make out two glowing eyes in the dark background. I think they were zombies.

You could see a story unfold with the whitetail deer. One that interested me was the whitetails, as they concerned me the most. Whitetails are more susceptible to harsh winters and it was amazing to watch the bucks. There were some very good ones.

You could see them in all their glory with full antlers, fat bellies and healthy. Then at the worst time you see them thinning due to the breeding season. As winter hits hard they look scruffy and starving and soon drop their antlers. They look terrible all winter, as the snow melts they slowly regain a healthy look. The does and fawns stay a lot healthier looking with just a drop in weight.

There were many pictures of coyotes following the deer trails looking for the weak, they looked healthy, so they must have found a few, and the picture story was very insightful.

Flights of Fancy As I drive around the countryside and see the colours of the wonderful fields of different crops, my longing to fly over that same country is all so irresistible. So many things in my life are gone beyond recovery and I’m afraid the ability to be at the controls of an aircraft is just one other one.

So many thoughts race through my mind as I remember the routine I went over before I could start the engine and line up on the runway. I thought of checking the windup mouse trap and the gallon jar that I connected it to the trap with flexible conduit tubing. So often the mice would half fill the jar, drowned in antifreeze. Then I would take the tin collars from around the wheels so mice couldn’t get into my plane. Until I learned the tricks to prevent them you could hear them running around in the space above the cockpit. Amazing the damage mice can do to an airplane.

Funny how unrelated things come into focus when you think of flying a little

aircraft. I picked up hints and tips from so many flying friends to help make the whole deal safer. You walked around the aircraft looking for anything that might cause a problem while you were airbourne.

Once off the ground it wasn’t possible to just stop and check things then!!

You certainly checked the fuel system for anything in the sediment bulbs and were so careful making certain all fuel was carefully filtered into the tanks. You made certain the level of oil was full and then you checked the prop for any cracks or nicks. All part of the fun. You needed to know for certain that you’d never have any surprise if you could help it in any way.

I’d push the little gal out of the hanger, put the chocks under the wheels, set the magneto switch, give the primer a proper little stroke and set the throttle at idle. My little aircraft had no electrics so it had to be hand propped. If I’d given it the proper prime I often thought I could bet anyone a thousand dollars it would start on the second flip.

The first pulled fuel into the cylinders and the next would almost certainly result in the little “Continental” bursting into song at a smooth idle, wonderful to hear! I’d settle myself in the left seat and

set the throttle at 1500 revs to check both magneto to make sure all was proper. I had ropes connected to the wheel chocks and I’d pull them in and stow them behind the seat.

Well now, you know we were ready for take off so I’d set the gyro-compass to the runway and taxi out to which ever end required by the wind direction. As the saying goes, you pushed the throttle to the wall and started to do the dance on the rudder pedals to keep the nose lined up down the strip.

As soon as there was pressure on the controls, you just pushed the elevator forward to pick up the tail making it easier to see forward over the nose, and then a little back pressure as the speed increased and suddenly you realized you were airborne.

I just never got over the thrill. It always made me realize how wonderful it was to do something man had tried for years to be able to do, and now I had the privilege to do exactly that.

Once we had some altitude I would slow the little engine down to cruising revs about two thousand R.P.M and about eighty five M.P.H indicated. Just the right speed to check the cows and the crops

and visit some nearby neighbors to say an airborne “Hello.”

It always delighted me to see so much country in so short a time and take stock of all that was happening and how the crops looked after a storm or rain. Sure beat anything I ever experienced in any other way. People say I am exaggerating when I claim I could read my cattle brands, but I could certainly tell they were my cows.

I just loved waiting until the shadows were long and the light had a wonderful glow. I can see it now.

Soon it seemed it was time to head home and I could see my red Fescue, green runway with the boards painted a vivid orange to show up for a long long way. My strip was only 1500 feet long and you needed to land with care on the very near end of the strip. It just made good sense to practise that. Throttle back, nose on the strip and glide angle and speed right on the money. Watch the speed and at the exact right timing, ease back on the elevator, flare in other words, and gently touch down.

The end of a perfect flight was a smooth landing.

A&W Donates Money To Community Member Living With MS Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Vermilion’s A&W held two garage sales over the past month to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MS).

Maud Crews, the restaurant manager, organized the events which took place July 12 and 13, along with another weekend sale held on July 26 and 27.

Part of the proceeds raised during the sales were designated for a local community member.

Donna DeFord suffers from MS and Manager, Crews made the decision to donate $500 of the proceeds to DeFord to assist her in the purchase of a new walker.

DeFord plans to use the funds to purchase a folding walker that will make transporting easier.

“This walker will help me be more independent. I will get a nice walker that I will be able to use and take everywhere.”

The more advanced walkers are more expensive than what the average disability

funding will cover, explained Deford.

With the donation DeFord’s wish of owning this type of walker can now become a reality thanks to the generosity of the local A&W restaurant. On July 28 at the A&W restaurant Crews presented DeFord with a cheque.

The items at the garage sale were all donations from the community. Crews thanked all those who donated.

“Once again the community outdid themselves. We had so much stuff donated from Vermilion and the surrounding areas, which made the event a great success.”

There Were Women Margaret Lonsdale Columnist

Women of Canada, who do you think you are? When you think of how different your lives are from those of your forebears, what names do you consider deserving of your gratitude and for what?

Emily Murphy. She was a key player in the establishment of The Married Women’s Protective Act, passed in Alberta in 1911. The act gave women the right to share in their husband’s property.

Murphy was also the first female magistrate in the British Empire in 1916. She dedicated her life to improving lives of Canadian women.

Louise McKinney. Ms McKinney was instrumental in establishing the first Dower Act in Alberta, an act that prohibited the mortgaging or sale of a woman’s property without her express knowledge and consent. In 1917, she became the first woman to sit as an elected member of any Legislative Assembly anywhere in the British Empire. Nellie McClung. She led the movement that resulted in women

acquiring the right to vote in Manitoba in 1916 and soon after in Saskatchewan and Alberta. McClung was the first female to serve on the Board of Directors for the CBC and in 1938 was chosen as an esteemed delegate to the League of Nations in Geneva.

Henrietta Muir Edwards. In 1893, Ms Edwards helped in the founding of the National Council of Women of Canada, an organization that continues today to improve the lives of women, families, and society. Edwards published Canada’s first women’s magazine, Women’s Work in Canada. She encouraged women to engage in matters of substance and not to be enslaved by fashion.

Irene Parlby. A notable advocate for the rights of farm women in Canada, Parlby organized and acted as the first President of the United Farm Women’s Association in 1916. Elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1921, Parlby was the first female Cabinet Minister in Alberta, and the second in all of the British Empire.

Together, the above-named five women challenged section 24 of what was then Canada’s Constitution, the British North America Act. Section 24 stipulated that “only qualified persons” could

be named to the Canadian Senate and up to that point, the Canadian government had interpreted “qualified persons” to mean men. The challenge put forth by the Famous 5 resulted in women being officially declared, in law, as persons.

It’s notable that our own Supreme Court rejected the challenge. It was a higher authority, the Privy Council of England, whose members ruled that women were indeed entitled to be known as “persons.

Thanks, oh you undaunted, relentless pursuers of justice and fairness. For further reading, search the “Person’s Case” as it’s known in Canadian legal history.

Therese Casgrain. A Quebec activist and parliamentary reformer, Casgrain became the first woman in Canada to lead a Provincial party, leading the CCF (Co-operative Commonwealth Federation), the predecessor of the NDP, in 1961. She formed the Quebec branch of the Voice of Women, an organization dedicated to promoting world peace. In 1970, Prime Minister Trudeau appointed her to the Senate. Casgrain contributed immensely to Canadian democracy during her lifetime.

For a short blip in time, the Famous 5

and Ms Casgrain featured prominently on our fifty dollar bill. It was the first time that any woman’s image appeared on our currency, with the exception of Queen Elizabeth II who appears on the twenty.

Was it an indication of changing times of modern Canada where historically significant Canadian women might finally receive long overdue acknowledgement via our currency? Well, temporarily. In 2011, the images of these heroines were replaced by one of a big icebreaker. Someone decided that ships trump women’s contribution to Canadian history I guess.

Women in the present benefit substantially from the diligence of those who pursued rights that we now can’t imagine living without. Personhood. Property ownership. Occupying positions of political and legislative power. The right to vote.

Should the Bank of Canada consider balancing its depiction of who throughout our history contributed to what modern Canada represents today by featuring women of note on our currency?

History, it seems, would deem the efforts of women worthy of more than a single, fleeting appearance alongside our equally notable men.

Bean Salad Summer is one of the best times to enjoy lots of salads.

They go great with barbeques and all sorts of summer entertaining. Even though this recipe makes a larger salad, don’t worry if you have a small family because it is a marinated salad and it will keep for several days. It is great to pull a bean salad out of the fridge, already made. It actually tastes better the second or third day as the ingredients marinade in the vinaigrette dressing.

Beans are an excellent source of fiber.

Black beans, chick peas and kidney beans

are a protein fiber combo that helps stabilize blood sugar. A recent study has shown that a one-third cup of chick peas a day has a beneficial impact on blood sugar and insulin response. Since beans are a low glycemic food that is high in fiber they can aid in weight loss. It is interesting to note that home cooked beans have a lower glycemic index than canned or pressure cooked beans.

A diet with adequate fiber lowers blood cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of both heart disease and colon cancer. The fiber in black beans can provide you with digestive health by providing the nutrients needed for the development of the good bacteria in the lower digestive tract.

Black beans are a good source of molybdenum, folate, fiber, manganese, calcium,

magnesium, B vitamins, and tryptophan.

Since beans are high in nutrients, fiber and low in fat, they are thought to raise leptin levels, which in turn raise metabolism. Black beans and chick peas are also high in antioxidants. One cup of either black beans or kidney beans provides 20% of our daily recommended value of iron and 30% of our daily recommended amount of protein.

Combine a bean salad with any grain such as pasta or bread or a dairy product and the protein from the beans becomes as complete in amino acids as eating meat.

Bean Salad 1 can chick peas 540 ml 1 can black beans 540 ml 1 can kidney or fava beans 540 ml 1 cup chopped red onion

1 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup red pepper chopped (can be orange or yellow) Dressing 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar 3 cloves of garlic pressed 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 4 teaspoons honey 1/2 teaspoon celery seed 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/4 teaspoon pepper Drain and rinse all the beans. In a bowl combine the beans, chopped onion, celery and red pepper. In a separate small bowl combine all the ingredients for the dressing. Pour the dressing over the salad ingredients and combine well.

Senior member summer camps and a 4-H exchange opportunity.

June 29-July 3, 2014 Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club senior members Travis Dow and Julia McCrae (as well as Julia’s Finnish 4-H Exchange Venla) attended Leadership Through Counselling Seminar (LTCS) at Battle Lake Provincial 4-H Camp. LTCS equips senior members to help campers grow, make memories, be safe and have a great time. Parents appreciate that delegates need to be trained in order to be able to counsel in the 4-H program.

During the 5 day camp senior 4-H delegates learn how to lead sessions safely and how important it is for delegates to pay attention. They also learn to appreciate how much work goes into preparing camps

for 4-H delegates. Julia enjoyed meeting new people and making the 4-H connection. Travis had fun with team games and meeting up with friends from previous camps. Venla absorbed the camp atmosphere and had fun meeting new people and learning new games.

July 20-25, 2014 was Club Week which was held at Olds College. Andrew McCrae was a senior facilitator, Julia McCrae was a junior staff member, David McCrae and Venla Jokitalo were delegates at this lifechanging 4-H camp. Club week is full of games, deep thoughts, sharing, fantastic speakers and is jam packed with loads of fun! Julia says “Club Week is a great opportunity to meet new people, and learn about other peoples’ challenges.” “Club week was good,” reported David, “You learn more about yourself.” Venla said “It’s the best camp ever.” Venla was able to meet up with the other three Finland 4-H Exchange delegates. Andrew says “Every

4-H member should go to Club Week.”

Venla Jokitalo is a 4-H member from Finland who participated in the Canada/ Finland 4-H Exchange one month program.

She and her fellow Finnish 4-H delegates arrived on June 29, 2014 and left on July 28, 2014. During her stay Venla attended 4-H camp and participated in whatever activities her host family (the Doug and Joanne McCrae family) was involved in.

For her that included helping wash sheep

for 4-H Achievement Day, helping with music at Vacation Bible School, helping out around the house and taking a short holiday. The McCrae family encourages other families to consider hosting a 4-H exchange student. It is a great way to meet people from other countries and provides a wonderful opportunity to share our lives..

We are in turn enriched by the experience.

Julia hopes to visit Finland on the Canada /Finland 4-H Exchange next summer.

SOMEONE SAID THE PREPARATION AND BASE MATERIAL ARE CRITICAL TO A SUCCESSFUL JOB. CAN YOU EXPLAIN?

A: Tile is a great product and when installed properly will last a very long

time. It costs a bit more to install but the initial investment will likely out last other softer products many times over. As you suggested, the base is critical to installing tile. I am not an expert but I believe the adhesive or cement product that holds the tile down must have a proper surface to grip to. If you have an OSB subfloor the moisture in the cement can be drawn out of the adhesive into the substrate causing it to fail. Plywood on the other hand is better as it does not absorb as much of the water in the cement. A second factor is the thickness of the subfloor. As you know the tile will not flex so if the floor below the tile is flexible you will soon have loose and cracked tiles.

I believe it is recommended that the floor be 1” thick. Contact a flooring contractor for more tips before starting you will be glad you did.

Riders, Guns And Horses Dazzle At The Vermilion Fair Elina Castro Reporter Altho u gh th e sp o r t of m ounte d shooting is about 20 years-old in North America, the Border Cowboys Mounted Shooters Association is 4 years old, with about 50 members in Vermillion and Lloydminster.

The Border Cowboys, who entertained vast crowds at the Vermilion Fair, are a driving force behind a fastgrowing equine sport in Canada. Why are so many people joining the club?

Because it involves guns and horses.

And who doesn’t like guns and horses?

It’s a perfect combination.

Guns first. The pistol used in the Mounted Shooting competition is the famous Colt .45 Peacemaker. The competition rifle is a caliber 44.40 Winchester lever action. Both weapons are loaded with black powder, and pose no danger to competitors, animals or the public.

How does a horse adjust to a weapon being fired at close range?

It’s a question of trust. Horses are trained slowly and gradually, with care and attention in case there are signs of rejection. Once a horse is scared or soured, it will have problems for the rest of its competitive life. But once it knows that the noise isn’t dangerous, the horse will adapt and be able to compete.

And then there’s horsemanship.

The competition involves a horse and rider negotiating a shooting pattern where balloon targets are shot with

black powder blank ammunition that is certified to break the target within 20 feet. It is impossible to practice for the competition, since patterns are drawn the morning of the shoot.

William Gilbert, who hails from La Belle Province, has been fixing roofs for the past 10 years. He settled in Sylvan Lake but, since he moved his business to Vermilion four years ago, he has not looked back.

that roofers usually slow down during the winter, and workers will move indoors when temperatures hit -15 to -20 C. “Except for this one. We have been working non-stop since January,” she explained, referring to the hurricane-force wind storm that hit the province on January 15.

Asia Holds Great Opportunities For Alberta Minister Olson Submitted There is no shortage of opportunities for Alberta’s agriculture sector o n th e wo rl d s ta g e, esp e cia lly i n Asia. China and Japan are our second and third largest agricultural export m a r ket s , wo r th a co m b i n e d $2. 8 billion annually, and there is plenty of room for growth to meet the needs of their surging populations and economies.

I had the chance to witness that potential firsthand during a trade and investment mission to Asia earlier this year. The mission targeted key financial centres and market access points in Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Japan.

We m e t w i th co m p a n i e s i n te rested in doing business with Alberta, particularly in the grains and meat sectors. We also met with government officials to discuss how we can better strengthen our trade relationships. There is clearly a real appetite for Alberta’s high-quality food products including beef, pork, grains and oil seeds.

What is also clear is that our province has to continue to aggressively promote itself to make the most of these opportunities. The competition in the global marketplace is fierce and Alberta is fighting for a place on Asian menus with other suppliers like

Australia and the United States.

Alberta’s international offices will have an impor tant role in keeping our province front and centre in the minds of Asian consumers and businesses. As well, trade missions, such as this recent one, also reinforce Alberta’s commitment to increased trade as well as create opportunities for Alberta companies to make connections with potential clients and investors.

On this mission, we were able to bring about a dozen agriculture and e n e rg y co m p a n i e s to g e th e r w i th approximately 175 potential investo r s a t b u s i n e s s “ m a tc h m a k i n g ” seminars. While it is still too early to assess the full extent of the results of the mission, I know the agriculture companies who par ticipated have reported at least 20 solid investment leads that were generated through these meetings. I’m hopeful some of these new food connections will turn into long and prosperous relationships.

While the trade mission was an eye-opener about the market possibilities we need to pursue in Asia, it also drove home the point that there are challenges here at home that we must overcome. Our recent troubles moving last year’s record harvest to market by rail has resulted in a fair amount of angst among our international customers, who are concerned about the long-term dependability of

In order for Alberta and Canada to avoid any permanent damage to our reputation as a reliable global supplier of energy, food and other goods, we have to continue to aggressively seek and implement improvements to the transportation system for all commodities. Recently passed federal legislation that set minimum quotas for grain delivery has certainly helped.

We are also pleased that the federal government is expediting the review

of the Canada Transportation Act to identify additional measures. We are strongly encouraging representatives from all commodity sectors to participate in the review process to ensure that their concerns and suggested solutions are put on the record. Our reputation as a world class supplier of high-quality food and other commodities relies on our ability to deliver those goods to market in a timely manner.

Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Show Results 2014 AG Society Submitted

On July 23 and 24 the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Committee hosted an Open Sheep Show and a Youth Sheep Show.

The show attracted 38 exhibitors and 95 sheep, which is up from last year. The exhibitors came from Vermilion Area, Elk Point, Rivercourse, Lloydminster, Edmonton, Killam, St. Paul and Clyde.

We were happy to have John Mulcair, Granite Quarry Farm of Edmonton, as our Judge for the two days of the fair. He raises purebred horned dorset and dorper sheep. Will Rogers once said, “It takes a lifetime to build a good reputation, but you can lose it in a minute.” That is a quote worth remembering, and one that applies to every part of the Canadian grain industry, including farmers.

Canada has a strong reputation for consistently delivering high quality grains, oilseeds and special crops to our domestic and international customers. There are circumstances when this reputation can be damaged by things outside of the control of an individual producer. Individual producers can’t control the impact weather has on quality. Individual farmers can’t speed up rail car delivery. Foreign governments might apply non-science based rules that cause some consumers to question the safety of imports from other countries. Finding solutions to problems like these are the cooperative responsibility between governments and organizations like Cereals Canada.

But there are some factors that impact our international reputation that farmers can control entirely. Religiously following the labels on pesticide products is the most prominent example of this.

In the fall rush, it might seem like there’s simply not enough time to get that pre-harvest application done before the combines roll through the field.

Some farmers might think to themselves, “combining a few days before the preharvest interval is up won’t really make a difference right?” Or perhaps, “I really don’t have time to clean out the truck, that little bit of treated seed won’t matter will it?” They couldn’t be more wrong.

Shipments of Canadian grain are tested for pesticide residues in parts per billion or even parts per trillion. Unless your name is Dr. Sheldon Cooper, most of us can’t quite grasp the magnitude of a billion. It might help to think of a part per billion as 1 second in 32 years.

Customers of Canadian grain will complain if samples of vessel shipments contain pesticide residues that are at, or are close to, international maximum limits.

There is only one reason why this happens, and that is because of individual producers not following application guidelines on pesticide labels. Fortunately this is a rare occurrence – but it’s an entirely preventable problem – and it should simply never happen Individual producers can’t control

everything that goes into our international reputation and brand. But they do control some of the most important factors. Think about this reputation as you meet the demands of getting a crop in the ground, through to harvest and into the hands of customers. Some key critical management practices include: • Following the label for the application of every pesticide; • Ensuring the pre-harvest interval is respected in every case; • Never allowing fertilizer or treated seed to be delivered to an elevator, processor or feedlot; and • Ensuring the accuracy of all declarations for class eligibility.

Adhering to these guidelines will not just protect your reputation, it will protect your

neighbor ultimately, the entire Canadian grain industry.

Canada’s reputation for reliable, safe, high quality food is well earned. Our agricultural products come from clean air, clean water and clean land that are the envy of most of the world. Our rigorous science-based regulatory and food safety systems are second to none. Canadian farmers deliver high quality products through sustainable management practices that respect the natural environment in which we live and make the most efficient use of the resources needed for production. Preserving this hard won reputation is in everyone’s best interest.

The cost of losing or even damaging this reputation would be enormous.

Improving Barley And Triticale Feed Agri-News Submitted

Continued improvements in the yield and nutritional quality of barley grain and annual forages are essential to maintain a competitive cattle feeding sector in Canada.

Research currently underway, funded by the National Check-off and Canada’s Beef Science Cluster, is working to develop varieties of barley (grain and forage) and triticale (forage) with improved nutritional quality, yields, yield stability, disease resistance, and water

use efficiency. This research will also expand the germplasm resources available to ensure that varietal development continues into the future.

In addition to promising new sources of germplasm, over 2000 potential new lines and crosses will be made and screened each year. This project aims to release more than six new varieties with higher energy density, energy yield, better agronomics, and improved yield stability.

Vermilion Ag Society Goat Show Results 2014

On July 25th the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Committee hosted the first annual Goat Show. The show attracted 5 exhibitors and 8 goats. The exhibitors came from Vermilion and the Lloydminster Area. We were happy to have Shelby Crick of Lacombe as our judge. She is a Graduate of the Animal Science Program at Lakeland College and was a member of the LLC Judging team. Exhibitors enjoyed showing their goats in front of a large crowd and the results were as follows: Market Goat: 1st Cavin Jones, 2nd Clay Corbiere.

Marie received confirmation of her finalist status which reads: ‘This is a remarkable achievement, as only two percent of all entries made it to the finalist status. There were almost 8,000 entries from over 100 countries worldwide. All finalists’ songs will

now be sent to our celebrity judges who will determine the winners.’

Marie also rocked the Beer Gardens at the Vermilion Fair as she opened up for Sweet Tequila.

Local News Women Join Firefighting Course Elina Castro Reporter

Lakeland College’s Emergency Training Centre saw a promising influx of women to its 12-week Firefighter Training course at the Vermilion’s Fire E.T.C. this year.

“Much of the training takes place on one of the most advanced training fields in Canada,” said Colleen Symes, Communications Coordinator at the College. “Students from all over Canada and abroad come to train here.”

Lakeland’s 50-acre site is filled with contemporary props to provide real life, in-the-field learning experiences, and the training emphasizes teamwork.

trainees advanced in line on a burning structure, and quickly doused a raging fire. The fire was controlled by Operations man Morris MacMillan who increased or decreased the flow of gasoline, as needed, from a tower nearby.

The Voice spoke with 25 year-old Laura Guillet from Chatham Ontario.

Guillet expressed joy at being here and taking the course.

“I have been thinking of becoming a firefighter since I was in kindergarten,” she laughed.

To complement her vocation, Laura has completed Graduate studies in Human Kinetics also known as Kinesiology, the science of human movement.

While Platoon 3 fought another set of sweltering flames, the Voice located rescue dummies, Chuck and Jose who were having a siesta. Needless to say,

With tremendous discipline, students support each other. the dummies were not carrying the 65-pound gear that every firefighter— male or female—must wear. Firefighters always carry the same kit, and are responsible for its cleaning and maintenance.

While she quickly re-hydrated after helping to douse the fire, Platoon 3 member, Meagan Whiteside from Canwood, Saskatchewan told the Voice she decided two years ago to take the course.

“All of my skills and life experiences have led me here.” Whiteside’s 7 yearold daughter is proud that her mum is a firefighter. “I like making my daughter proud.”

Jessy English, from Cooks Creek in Manitoba made herself available to speak with the Voice. A volunteer firefighter back home, English made up her mind to take the course two years ago.

“This course has great credentials,” she assured us. “I quit my life to come here, and I am living my dream.”

On the issue of physical strength— something most women would think about when joining any emergency service—the Trainees explained that what really counts is functional stamina.

According to them, strength is not the

issue since the muscle groups utilized in firefighting are the same over and over.

English and her colleagues are serious about strengthening those muscle groups, keeping fit, working out at least two hours a day, and running as much as possible.

Field work is very hard; nothing is easy.

“There is lots of study as well, plus classroom instruction and exams. We get by on little sleep,” the Trainees explained.

Instructor Brian Byrnell said that the course is a major challenge for anyone– man or woman.

“Most people come here with some kind of psychological barrier but, after 12 weeks all of my students say: ‘I can do this.’”

At noon the Trainees were ready for lunch. “We were delighted to find out that so many women had joined the course,” they told the Voice.

It’s fair to say that these young women do not think too much about changing things or making history. What they want is to get on with the training and do the job.

The Voice did not catch up with the two Albertans, Paula Garnett of Lancaster and Moriah Steel of Red Deer, or with Katy Butland of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Absinthe Wormwood Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Absinthe wormwood is the name of a plant that some local residents have reported to be quite the troublemaker.

Historically this plant was cultivated in the French-Swiss borders. Now this invasive plant can be found in most areas of North America, including Alberta.

The uses for this plant vary from medicinal to more commonly, an ingredient in alcohol. The name “wormwood” has been speculated to be given by doctors who used the plant as a treatment for intestinal worms. Absinthe wormwood’s use was extensive with many being positive such as these reasons stated, on the absinthe 101 website, “Initially prescribed as a tonic for a variety of ailments, from headache to dysentery, the use of wormwood extract as a pharmaceutical cure for several different illnesses can be traced as far back as the Egyptian dynasty of 1600 B.C.” Although the uses have been positive there are statements of the plant having a negative background as well as stated

in the aforementioned website, “The only fluctuation from this long history of wormwood being put to good use is the absinthe scare of the early 20th century. A hundred years after wormwood was combined with other wild herb extracts to create the infamous absinthe blend, wormwood was said to cause not good health but, instead, madness and loutish, criminal behavior.”

Absinthe wormwood is not painted in a very bright light for many in the agricultural industry. When speaking on the plants habitat and impact the website goes on to talk about how it causes economical loss by “reducing available forage in native and managed rangelands and pastures, tainting the milk of cattle that graze it, and contaminating grain. The pollen is a source of allergy and asthma problems.

Also, absinth wormwood is allelopathic, inhibiting the growth of other plants. Volatile emissions from the leaves prevented wheat germination in one study. The entire plant is toxic if ingested.”

The plant is very difficult to eradicate.

It can be manually dug out or hand pulled out of moist soil or the use of chemicals

can be used.

When Harry Brook of Agriculture Alberta was asked to summarize the plant he said “It does not show up on either the Prohibited noxious or Noxious weed lists under the Weed Act. Absinthe is an escaped medicinal perennial plant brought in from Europe. Dairies try to avoid it for the unpleasant flavour it imparts to milk.

Cattle won’t graze it voluntarily. It often moves into pasture or hay from the roadsides. Growing seedlings are not particularly competitive with grasses but it does take advantage of bare ground to establish itself” Absinthe 101 website states the following for control, “To prevent the spread of absinth wormwood, minimize soil disturbance from vehicles and machinery, avoid over-grazing, and watch roadsides and fence rows for new populations. In pastures, a healthy stand of perennial grass will resist invasion and reduce spread of this plant. Disturbed areas should be re-seeded to prevent spread of absinth wormwood.”

A Vermilion community member, Brandon Baddock, has been selected as a Draft pick for the New Jersey Devils. Presently the tough going Baddock plays for the WHL (Western Hockey League) Edmonton Oil Kings. Baddock has made his family quite proud. At the Voice, staff members have spoken with Brandon’s grandma who often stops in our office and, with twinkling eyes and face aglow, gives us updates on Baddock’s achievements. “I am really excited; it has always been a dream of mine and it brings me one step closer to my goal,” Baddock said on being drafted. Local News Valley Lodge Seniors and Staff Build Parade Float Elina Castro Reporter

In the spirit of the Vermilion Fair, the Valley Lodge, a part of the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation which houses senior citizens and families in need, hosted a cozy barbeque for fun and funds. It was an impromptu summer celebration which spurred so much laughter at the Lodge

that they will host another next year.

The barbeque was the idea of the new Chief Administrative Officer, D’Arcy Wright whose goal was to raise funds.

“There is always something needed for our residents,” he said.

There was little advertising and no preparation, and still, Lodge residents and staff managed to raise almost $160.

Lodge seniors, with Supportive Living Staff, managed to build the float in less than 3 days. Teamwork really paid off.

“They begged, borrowed and black-

mailed anyone and everyone into decorating, building, painting and creating the end product,” said Rosta. The message was loud and clear: “Staff makes Lodge living fun!”

The Vermilion & District Housing Foundation has been housing seniors since 1960. Today, more than 120 seniors live in Foundation facilities.

3rd Annual Walk Of Hope Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

The 3rd Annual Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope will be held again this year in Vermilion on September 7th. The walk will take place at the Provincial Park at the CN station at 10 a.m. which will give time for participants to register, with the walk to commence at 11 a.m.

Second annual Kuk Sool Won TM Bootcamp

July 19 saw the second annual Kuk Sool WonTM boot camp take place, at the Lt. Col. Craig Armouries. This year, the focus was a five hour sparring workshop.

The workshop focused on body conditioning, free sparring, point sparring, ground fighting, sparring multiple opponents and a section on how to adapt techniques to work from any range. “The idea behind this boot camp” says Morgan Freeman “was to introduce students to a new aspect of the Kuk Sool Won syllabus. Students need to have a certain amount of time in class, to gain the necessary control, so as to avoid

injuring their partners”. Morgan Freeman adds: “I also introduced some really intense cardiovascular training as well as a whole load of pad work, combination punching, high impact kicking, ground fighting, to name just a few of the things we achieved during the five hours”.

Although Kuk Sool WonTM is not a tournament style art, competition is not a major aspect of Kuk Sool WonTM. Students are encouraged to participate in several official tournaments sponsored by the World Kuk Sool Association. These tournaments are geared specifically to allow students to compete in all areas of training, not just sparring.

students may compete in empty hand forms, weapons forms, sparring, techniques (appropriate to belt level), selfdefense and breaking wooden boards.

After Black Belt level, additional categories of competition (knife-throwing, sword cutting and archery) are also often available.

Over the years, Morgan Freeman has had the pleasure of training 8 European Champions, 12 U.K. Champions and 3 World Champions at official Kuk Sool WonTM tournaments. He looks forward to the participation of Vermilion students in competition, and to see them bringing medals home.

The Brighter Beginnings Summer program visited the library on July 29th for a tour, reading, games and crafts. There were 14 children from ages 3 to 5.

Infrastructure For A Growing Population Thomas Lukaszuk Submitted

Alberta is not a work camp where people come to collect a paycheque before returning to the province or country they call home.

Alberta is home. Like any home, infrastructure needs to be taken care of. And beyond being a shared social responsibility it’s also an economic driver.

Without schools and clinics and hospitals, without modern roads and bridges, without places to meet, without museums, art galleries and concert halls we can’t enjoy the high quality of life we’d expect in a strong economy, and we can’t grow. We can’t keep talented Albertans here, and we can’t attract the great people we need to build the Alberta of tomorrow.

Urban and rural communities face many of the same infrastructure issues: north and south, east and west, Alberta is and must continue to be the best place to live, learn, and work in Canada.

We can build affordable educational, transportation, recreational and cultural facilities that are right for each community, and we can make better use of the facilities we already have.

Building responsibly, Albertans don’t have to choose between living within our means and building new infrastructure. With 100,000 new people coming to our province every year, we can’t build a province that feels like home with only cash-on-hand.

Albertans know that owning a home comes with financing, and it is a worthwhile investment.

Under my leadership, government will continue to look at ways to finance the infrastructure we need, while living within the budgets we have. We are blessed to have strong partnerships between all three orders of government, the private sector and volunteer organizations. These partnerships will be instrumental in building and modernizing the schools, health facilities, roads and bridges that we need for today and tomorrow.

Building effective partnerships takes expertise and clear direction; under my leadership, government will revisit the way it approaches infrastructure partnerships. The goal is to ensure sensible infrastructure for communities, clear timelines for development, and clear reporting on what taxpayers are receiving for the money they are investing. P3s are useful in some situations, but they are not a silver bullet. We need new and

innovative ideas.

Building schools first As leader, I will work with developers before they create communities. The plan is to build schools first, and then build the community around the school.

Not only is this the right thing for developers to do, this is a win-win. We will have the new schools we need built quickly and affordably, and developers can highlight the benefit of a nearby school when selling homes.

Schools are paid for by taxpayers, and should be available to the community beyond school hours. A school can be so much more: it can also be a community hub for art and culture, for seniors, for health clinics and daycares and for after school community activities and sports. When schools close down, we can repurpose them to provide classroom space for heritage language schools, meeting space for businesses and not-for-profit organizations, and recreation space for the community.

Maintaining Alberta’s natural areas will also work with community and not-for-profit organizations to improve and maintain some of our existing infrastructure.

All across Alberta there are a number of campground and outdoor spaces which have fallen into disrepair. They have become an

eyesore in many cases. We need to improve the condition of these areas with help from local organizations and community groups.

These groups often have a personal interest in maintaining and upgrading these vacation spots, and I want to encourage that.

Infrastructure supports quality of life.

Years ago, I attended a conference of employers from all over the globe who were seeking the best and the brightest doctors from every country imaginable. Alberta was there to do the same, and I was surprised by the questions that job-seekers had. They did not ask how much we paid or what benefit packages we provided. Instead, they asked about what museums we have, where their children would go to school, and what their spouse would be able to do while they were at work. They were comparing between taking a job and making a life.

With thoughtful decision-making now, we can build the infrastructure Albertans need. With thoughtful planning, we can get ready for the new families who will soon make Alberta home. We can ensure Alberta is ready for the new industries that will create the success for the next generation. We can ensure Alberta remains the best place to launch a business, a family, and a life.
