On Tuesday July 22, the town of Vermilion hosted a courageous man.

Jim Prentice, who turned 58 yearsold on July 20, is hot on the campaign trail, working hard to earn the leadership of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party Association and become Premier.

With its huge energy resources owned by 4.2 million people,Alberta is possibly the wealthiest jurisdiction in the world today.

According to Prentice, in order to maximize the value of the province’s natural resources, we need to diversify our customer base. At the present time, practically 100% of exports go to the United States, at 50 cents on the dollar.

“The United States should be one of our customers,” Prentice stated, “not the only one”. He is an outspoken supporter of the pipelines. “We must sell our energy at global prices”.

A passionate outdoorsman, Prentice was Minister of the Environment during the 2009 World Conference on climate change in Copenhagen. Attended by 30,000 delegates from around the

globe, the conference felt like a wakeup call. Prentice believes, Alberta has veered off its environmental protection strategy and must get back on course.

The quality of life for 4.2 million Albertans may be threatened by an explosive population growth, since provincial systems and infrastructure are outdated.

“Consider that our province will have a population of 5 million by the end of the decade, and that 100,000 people bring 15,000 kids. ”Prentice elaborated. Those kids must be educated, and to do this, schools and colleges must keep the pace.

Originally from Ontario, Prentice came to Alberta with his parents and settled in Grand Cache, an “instant town” where he worked as a miner to pay for his tuition. “Education was the only escape from the mines.”

Prentice was first elected to Parliament as the Conser vative MP for Calgary-North Centre in 2004. He served as Industry Minister, Environment Minister, and Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. He had promised himself ten years in politics; he kept his word and resigned his seat in 2010.

Prentice returned to politics because, frankly, he was concerned about the management of his beloved province. “To be a Progressive Conservative today, one must be fiscally responsible,” he emphasized. “If my Mom can put money away every month while on a pension, shame

on us if we cannot balance our books.”

1st Annual Dan MacDonald Jr. Memorial Softball Tournament Christal Singer Submitted

THE GAME MUST GO ON A great weekend of softball was played at the Rusylvia Ball Park from July 18 – July 20, 2014. This tournament held every year by the ball team the “Brew Crew”. However with Dan Jr. MacDonald Jr. being one of the guys who enjoyed softball but especially enjoyed the camaraderie and family atmosphere. Dan enjoyed all sports and one of his favorite summer past times was entering in the Rusylvia ball tournaments this would have been his 5th season, unfortunately Dan passed just close by the baseball park (the last day of ball July 14, 2013). It was a tragic and great loss and great sadness for everyone who attended and who grew to know Dan MacDonald Jr. To honor him the Brew Crew team and all winners of last years tournament donated their money to Dan’s parents Danny MacDonald and Christal Singer for them to put up a flag pole next to the Rusylvia Club House . Harvey Dutchak (president of the Ukranian Ryslyvia even put Dan’s name in at the pitcher’s mound on the first field.

This past week they got a small work bee together and placed the flag and small plaque placed next to the flag prior to the tournament. Dan MacDonald Jr’s team was the Ice Cold Pitchers and Trevor Farkash member of the Brew Crew presented another plaque to Ice Cold Pitchers and accepting on behalf of the team was Rocky MacDonald (Dan jr’s brother) and thanking the Ice Cold Pitchers for continuing to keep the team together and coming out to have a good time.

And a good time it was. Tournament

winners were Family Affair first in A side.

And Dan Jr. would have been proud “FINALLY’ they won a division spot coming in first on the B side after five seasons. Bittersweet for Ice Cold Pitchers but I know they did it for Dan and his family. And placing first on the C side were the Pilsner Pirates.

Danny, Christal, and Rocky would like to thank everyone who came and welcomed them back and who were nothing but loving and caring and showing their support. Special thanks go to Trevor Farkash, Doug Hartwell, Har vey and Anita Dutchak, all the helpers to put the flag pole up, who were DanJr’s family and friends. The game must go on and we will see you next year.

TIPS TO KEEPING YOUR HOME HEALTHY AND SAFE:

Q: I hear a clicking noise near my pressure tank. It

happens about every 2-3 minutes, what could this be?

A: My best guess is that the clicking you hear is the pressure switch. I assume

your water pump is in the well or you would hear more than a clicking noise. Each click you hear is the starting and stopping of the pump. The fact that the clicks are close in time, 2 -3 minutes I will say the pump is losing pressure for some reason.

There may be a leak in the line but more likely the check valve in the pump is likely not holding. If the water is not running anywhere the pump and pressure switch should not cycle more than once. If the pressure tank in the basement is working properly the pump should only cut in after running the water for about 5 minutes and should only run for a couple of minutes to build the pressure again. There are other possibilities as well. I recommend you call a plumber to have a look before your pump burns out. Vermilion Fair Comes to Life Elina Castro Editor

Walking through the Fair grounds, gawking at the horses, cattle, car ts and wagons; hearing the laughter, and watching the smiles, hugs, and handshakes of those who have not seen each other in a while, I am impressed by the amount of thinking and work that has gone into this event, and I silently tip my hat to the Vermilion Agricultural Society members, staff and volunteers.

I ask myself: How did they do it? It takes

serious backbone to put on a dazzling and efficiently organized Parade and Show year after year. While searching through the Agricultural Society’s website (www. vermilionag.ca) for a little history, the following story caught my fancy with its hilarious glimpse at how things began.

Vermilion’s First Fair Excerpt from a letter by Ernest M. Taylor (1885-1915) Dated October 24th, 1906.

“A cowboy in Vermilion volunteered to ride a steer if anybody had a wild one handy.

None was forthcoming, but the owner of one of the livery barns sent for a horse of known evil disposition which had never been ridden before. When the horse came,

it was impossible to approach it with the saddle - the mere sight of it made it kick and plunge.

The cowboy then got out his rope and after one or two throws noosed one of its front legs. With one or two skilful turns he got the leg securely fastened to its body, so that it only had three legs to stand on.

Another attempt was then made to saddle the horse, but with no success.

He then threw the horse single handed by means of his rope, fastened all its legs together and saddled it while on the ground. Then he let it get up, unfastened all the ropes and leapt into the saddle. The horse bucked, kicked and reared, snort-

ing loudly all the time, while the ring of spectators rushed back out of the way.

For about twenty minutes it did its best to unhorse him, but was not able to, and then it realized it was beaten and became quite quiet. That was the climax to the fair.”

Much like that fearless cowboy one hundred and eight years ago, the members, staff, volunteers and supporters of the Vermilion Agricultural Society with sheer energy, determination and pride have brought communities, families and friends together, and have earned the motto: “Keeping the community strong”.

Well, I blinked and July passed me by, and the busier I get the faster summer will try to pass me by.

Also, I have to slow down and/or live and enjoy some adventures.

I would rather they be any outdoor adventures -- it’s the fond memories of the adventures that slow summer time down, even if living them goes by in what seems like a flash.

This past weekend I went on an adventure, and though it wouldn’t classify as an outdoor adventure, most of it was enjoyed outdoors, or it felt like it anyway.

Since bow hunting season is coming quickly with less than 40 sleeps now, I decided to take the wife on a long weekend road trip, just for her, she had been longing to see her home town for quite some time.

Roxanne was born in Red Deer as were both our daughters, and it’s been some 20 plus years since we had been there, and she was a little homesick.

Also, she was thinking of the future and retirement, which I am fortunate that I can do at a decent age with full retirement benefits, so options are open on just where we want to do that when the time comes.

I’m not much of a road trip lover as driving has always worn me out, but it’s kinda sorta like being outdoors with a lot of scenery, wilderness and interesting

things to look at while driving.

The first leg of the trip was to stop off at my folks for a visit in rural Lacombe.

Unfortunately it has been too long since we have done that also, so it was good to see them and visit.

They have a large honey bee farm which is always interesting with sweet rewards, a large quantity of fresh honey was at the top of Roxanne’s things to do or get on the trip.

I noticed some large buildings off in the distance on the north 40 and asked mom what it was, and she took us on a tour of the family owned “automatic” milk farm ; a huge high tech building much more than what I think of as a farm.

Absolutely amazing…not a soul around, and all the chores are done. I miss Daisy and the rest of the milking cows come and go as they please; they enter the building from one open side.

There are feeding stations where the cows go to feed. As they feed they are milked automatically. Not only are they milked, they get a gentle bath and there is even an automatic pooper scooper that cleans and mops the place up.

It was a beautiful evening and we spent it outdoors comparing gardens, watching wildlife…basically the birds and the bees, ha ha… and just enjoying the company.

We spent the night in a hotel in central Red Deer as we didn’t want to be a burden to the folks, and the wife wanted to visit the quaint little farmers market the next day, which is within walking distance.

out early to the farmers market. Well folks, things have changed: This quaint little farmers market was now like a three-ring circus.

There were more people there than in the entire town of Wainwright. Literally thousands of people were selling every “knick knack” known to man; street performers were everywhere.

One young man sat on an 8 ft. high unicycle, peddling it so it stayed in one place, all the while juggling three sharp swords, a real three-ring circus somewhere is missing out.

The farmers market had at best 20% of things actually having to do with farmers, but you could buy everything fresh, including farm fresh windows, I thought it was a joke at first.

They were selling old farm house windows similar to some older windows I am replacing on my own home; these had no glass, just a wooden window frame and were asking $45.00 each for them.

Scary thing was there were people buying them, walking around that farmers market took hours and was an adventure, of some sort, all by itself.

That afternoon we headed down the road to Penhold.

Penhold, or Mynarski Park as the Military base was called, is where our girls grew up since they were born. It was good to see and brought back many fond memories.

We drove to Penhold to explore and then out to the river where I raised my Alaskan Malamute sled and pack dogs, I really missed the sights, sounds and memories there.

Innisfail was on the list, but by the time we got there, we had other plans so we didn’t have a good look around, Innisfail is also home to the Discovery Wildlife Park... http://discoverywildlifepark.com There they have bears, wolves, tigers, raccoons…all the cool critters, and the wife has an animal nose fetish and wanted to squish the Barneys, the big 1,300 lb Grizzly bear’s nose who, incidentally, is a big movie star, as are many of the animals there. Many have been in major movies such as Anchorman, Dr. Doolittle 2, Grizzly Falls, RV, Air Buddies and many more.

O n t h e l a s t d a y, w e m a d e o u r way back to Red Deer for a look at Roxanne’s folks home where they lived before they passed, and where Roxanne grew up.

That evening Roxanne wanted to

see Red Deer’s Westerner Days stampede/fair, something she did every year as a young lady…let me tell you that was o n e whole oth er kin d of adventure.

The people there now were as interesting as any rides or main attractions; we made it in perfect time to see a concert by the rock band ‘The Sheep dogs” which rocked.

We left before the fireworks, as it poured rain for a while and like most we were wet. We had a late supper at Roxanne’s favorite restaurant, East Side Mario’s, and enjoyed their endless salads and fresh hot bread sticks.

Sunday morning was beautiful again, and life was good…they even had a Tim Horton’s right in the Hotel parking lot, which can give directions to all in Red Deer.

We decided to leave the Discovery Wildlife Park for another adventure which I want to include, the badlands, Royal Tyrrell Museum and Dinosaur Park… www.tyrrellmuseum.com/ We wanted to see Lacombe and visit my younger brother’s campsite, which is actually his grave site – I call it a campsite – and we sat in grass beside his grave stone and talked.

I own the grass next to my brother as it will be my resting place also and it is paid for. I drew his headstone: on one side… mountains, streams, bears, moose etc. in a sunset scenario.

We had a long visit. I glued a successful hunting arrow to the front of his headstone, and we invited him to join us at the folks for the rest of the morning and afternoon.

The whole adventure was pressure free, I even enjoyed it. We didn’t have to be anywhere at any certain time, we did and saw what we wanted when we wanted; it is scary how much Alberta has grown in these places.

Just the other day while sitting in a local watering hole, I observed a young man in a sweat shirt that had that logo across the front, back and down both sleeves. I guess he wanted to make certain it was seen!! I’d like to bet that that young man probably has no idea what it would be like to live in that kind of situation. Let’s see, if we can define that kind of lifestyle. To start with there would not be, like as not, any kind of law enforcement, if there was any law to enforce. Try to think of that for a minute, and realize you’d have to post a guard before you could bed down for the night and imagine that anything you owned would be target for anyone who wanted to take it from you. Hard to imagine, you think? Fact is a good part of the world lives that way.

Maybe we better beware that that kind of activity doesn’t catch on in this country. When you watch the news and read the dailies, the news is taking on a

dangerous tone, when you hear of politicians taking liberties with money that they’ve been entrusted to look after and witnessing our judicial system turning convicted criminals out to roam our streets and continue their nefarious ways. Think of the problems of the boys on the beat, doing repeat time after time arrests of the same people. That must be a morale killer. I don’t understand, I guess I’m not well enough educated, maybe, to how cold blooded killing can be first or second degree. The family of the victims must feel that they have been betrayed in the mumbo-jumbo of the system, when the perpetrators are given a tap on the wrist and set free. There must be a fairer way.

I can remember in my childhood hearing of the respect that the Mounties attained by fair and just administration of their duties, and how even throwing a punch at a member was a definite No- No. Think of now when it seems that even using them as target practice is something to do to make a statement somehow.

By the same token we’re shaken by stories such as the gun grab in High River and events like unarmed people being hit

with tazers and being subjected, I think to perhaps a bit of unreasonable use of authority. As anyone can remember, one potato in the bin can spoil a lot of others anywhere near. We surely knew that but for the presence of our police force, we’d be on the front line against the drug dealers who use us as a fodder for their mills.

Ever hear of home invasions or carjacking? Well it is a fact of life and we who read the daily papers see it happening almost daily. Still we’re told we aren’t to try and defend ourselves in any way, just leave it to the local police. When you live perhaps twenty miles from the nearest town, I think you’d feel like a gopher in an open field, with a sky full of hungry birds of prey circling above. Get the picture? I think the birds would have the prey eaten and gone before help could possibly arrive. Even with the way things are today, somehow people should have the “Right” to protect their own home in an emergency.

There aren’t enough police to be everywhere and the laws should be made to allow at least that. I’d hate to try to run a business in Edmonton or any large centre, with a justice system as it is

and have all the incidences of crime and violence going on, with me as the source of cash for these people to carry on their chosen lifestyle. Just read the police file in the “Daily Sun”. Makes you wonder, how can society put up with such?

I hear of murders committed and in too many instances the guilty soul is in a short while out enjoying life a free being. Turn the page and we see police have in the cold winter taken people into the country to survive the best they can. Can you wonder that respect for the whole process is systematically being eroded? Even members involved in drunken driving or abuses of a spouse in similar circumstances have, I believe, lessened our respect and trust in our law enforcement. God help us if we can’t rely on our police. Anarchy isn’t even pleasant to think of, let alone live in its presence. As a law abiding, free thinking fails, our heritage is to speak out and take an interest in what is going on around us and yes, to work with, and not against, those who strive to keep us safe. Just think of this world without and thank your lucky stars we still have time to work to improve our situation before it is too late.

The community of Vermilion is fortunate to have one of the least expensive Fairs in the area. For a mere five dollars, people are granted passage for the entire day.

Scattered showers in the afternoon may have driven some people away, but this was followed by a warm, sunny evening filled with laughter, excitement, great music and devoted volunteers like the rockin’ Reverend Keith Marsh. He, like many other volunteers at the fair, spent hours feeding long lineups of hungry fairgoers, while uncles like Owen Hill sat on a bench and helped to dress up competitors who appeared in the wide variety of competitions. RVs lined the train tracks and filled just about every field and parking lot in Vermilion.

Rick Dees, manager of the stage behind Anthony’s Grill booth, sang some gospel and western tunes with the Outriders lead singer, and spoke

of the talents of other musicians who would appear on his stage throughout the fair. He praised Matthew McCrae for his unique talent as a Vermilion original folk artist. He also had great praise for the eleven year-old singer Jordyn Pollard from Lloydminster who sings to contemporary music.

Audiences stood in awe of the talents of Lexi Strate, who won the Future Star award this year and appeared on stage three times this weekend. Udo Mueller and Dixie Coleman from the Elk Point Choir were a hit as well, and can be seen again every Christmas as the Elk Point Choir tours Elk Point and St. Paul.

As people ran to the indoor events to escape the mild showers, they encountered a dazzling art display by Vermilion students in the Exhibit Hall. One picture, done in black and white, appeared to fold into itself. Nearby, there were mouthwatering vegetable and fruit entries alongside the herbs and flowers. On the opposite side of the room were homemade wines and canning sections while

a variety of other entries lay between.

What a remarkable, colorful display of talent was exhibited at the Vermilion Fair this year. What a great opportunity for people to beam rays of sunshine to their audience.

Another indoor hit was the humour writer Professor Clickity Klunk who has published ten rhyming children’s stories and has eight more still to come. He has visited the Vermilion library summer program and school several times and can recite each one of his books off the top of his head with flair and with a twist of his black top hat at any given moment.

He introduces himself as a man who has written over 600 poems, then invites his audience to take out a shovel and bury 300 hundred of them. Professor Klunk’s favourite book hasn’t been published yet. It is about a young man named Clayton. He has a disability; he is made out of clay. Despite this shortcoming, he learns to excel.

A third indoor favorite was The Old Butler Building where one could see chicks hatching out of their eggs and hens in pens. Visitors could also learn how bees socialize and taste a fresh honeycomb. Margaret Snelgrove explained that if there are two queen bees in one hive, the hive will swarm. Her husband’s uncle, Louis Snelgrove, has published books about bees, including one titled Queen Rearing. Snelgrove’s daughter, Peggy Jillson, was on hand to teach people about the importance of bees to food production. Jillson lives in Eugene, Oregon, and brings her entire family to the Vermilion Fair each year. She has two hives in her backyard in Oregon.

Outside, the pony chariot races, antique tractor pull, heavy horse hitches and chuck wagon races kept the audience humming and hurrahing as the rain subsided. Check throughout the paper for fair pictures.

Ah, you’re Canadians, the man says.

Wait a minute---he’s the one with the accent, isn’t he? We remind ourselves that when visiting someplace else, we are the ones with the accents.

Travelling to other places in the world offers the opportunity to experience people, sights, and sounds different from our own. We notice first the most obvious, mundane differences. The weather.

The condition of the roads. The appearance of buildings and public spaces. If we have the opportunity to explore a variety of destinations, we explore with fascination the depth of similarities and differences between people and cultures.

It’s natural to compare what we know to what we encounter when we visit another country. If we arrive in Mexico in January, we welcome warmth. We might even smile smugly, recalling the scene of swirling snow we left behind, placing it on the list of things remembered but not really missed.

ries older than our own, we expect to encounter landscapes and architecture unavailable in our part of the world. Yet, we are often surprised to feel an authentic connection to places steeped in such history. It’s like realizing that our favourite story, as endearing and captivating as it may be, has for all our lives been missing the introduction and the first and second chapters. Finding ourselves in the presence of landscapes and ruins traversed and occupied by our ancestors can be a profoundly moving experience. Viewing our own country over a long distance may help us understand the world slightly better. It may even help us to understand ourselves better. Or at least to consider who and what Canadians are in the greater context of the world.

People from other places ask questions about Canada. Where, in your country, is Alberta? Is it near where that band, Arcade Fire, is from? Is everyone there bilingual? Do you play hockey?

How big are the Rocky Mountains? Is it always cold? Have you ever actually seen a moose? Are there really more jobs than people where you’re from? Do you know Beth from Toronto?

We do our best to explain, trying not

to take it as an insult that everyone everywhere doesn’t know the layout and nature of our great land. We are grateful that there aren’t so many questions about dogsleds and living in igloos as in the distant past.

No matter what part of the planet we inhabit, it’s likely that most of us are a little ethnocentric. We imagine the universe revolves around our country, our culture, our own experience, all of which, naturally, is the best.

Travelling is an opportunity to expand that perspective. It’s a chance to gain a better understanding of how vast and diverse the world really is, and how our own experience, in a multitude of ways, is neither superior or inferior to others that thrive elsewhere. Our own culture is simply one of the thousands in existence.

If the experience is a positive one, it’s not unusual to daydream about selling out and relocating. Costa Rica, here we come! It would take some consideration, though, for most of us to abandon our home and native land permanently.

It seems there’s no end to fascinating places in the world to visit, yet it’s mostly true that there’s no place like home.

What do we love most about our Canada and enjoying the privilege of

calling ourselves Canadian? Maybe each of us ought to think about that as the years pass and we keep venturing out but always coming back again. Maybe one day, just to see what we come up with, we’ll take a pencil and some paper and attempt to make a list. Put it in a jar to pull out as a personal reminder now and then. Call it The Ten Things I Love Best About My Canada.

When I think of th e l a s t s eve ra l weeks, I think of Charles Dickens’ line, ”It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” I 3”occasion wide version attended the joyous of my best friend’s son’s wedding. I was sad that my friend had to experience this special event in a wheelchair, back and forth to the hospital. We usually talked on the phone, but I was told to text

while she was in the hospital. The next day I texted her at the hospital, “It was a beautiful wedding, when do you get to come home? “ I did not hear back from her. I had bought a joke book I wanted to take over to her and read some, and laugh with her. I had heard that humour can boost the immune system, and help in the fight against cancer. We could laugh and cry and hope together. I kept checking my phone for her text reply.

When I got home from work a few days later, my husband told me that my friend was gone. I felt confused, trying to process what he had just said.

My first response was: “No… no…” not wanting to accept it. I asked: How can that be? How can it be that when such a lovely, mother, wife, sister, grandma and friend to so many can slip away on us all? One week we are rejoicing at a wedding, the next week we are deeply saddened, sharing hugs and tears.

How does one come to terms with such a loss? I read two books on heaven.

I cried. I thought about so many of the moments that we had spent together, replaying them in my mind, like a movie made up of fragments of our times together, as young women, then new

moms and before we knew it, our children had grown up.

As I write this, I know the Vermilion Voice has one less reader. She told me she always read my column, and I said, “Really?” When she read about the trips to other countries, she knew the articles well, because she was there with me. Now she has made a journey to another place. It is a place of infinite beauty and full of joy. And even though I am sad to go on without her, I am also very happy that she is now in the best of times.

“The Fair acts as a reunion. People come home from all over. I would like to thank the Agricultural Society volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors, judges, participants, attendees. It has been another great Parade and Fair.”

So … What is the secret to the Agricultural Society’s 108-year success? “Volunteers,” the Mayor replied. “It is the work of the volunteers that has kept the Fair going all these years.”

Fire In The Dump Elina Castro Reporter

The Vermilion Fire and Rescue Department had a busy day on July 21.

The call came around mid-morning with a report about a fire at the City dump. The Fire Department responded promptly, but a quick-thinking employee had pulled the burning debris outside, and the fire was extinguished.

“This fire seems accidental.” Deputy Fire Chief, Anton Krys told The Voice in a telephone interview. “Someone dumped something hot, but thanks to Vince Cusak there was no damage to buildings or people. Kudos to Mr. Cusak.”

Residents should be careful with the type of materials they are dumping, since it can affect an entire community.

“We are a busy group,” Krys added.

“We get about one call every two days.

Yesterday (Monday 21) we had three calls: One about the dump, one about a motor vehicle accident, and the third about a stove fire in an apartment building.”

A very active group, the Vermilion Fire Department, has 28 volunteer members.

Anton Krys has been with them for 16 years. “Thankfully our employers allow us to do this. At times it’s like having two full time jobs,” Krys concluded.

Use caution when using a fireplace or candles. Ensure children are never unsupervised when these items are being used.

Participate in local fire prevention week activities. Local fire departments often initiate education programs in schools or community events (such as fundraisers) to raise awareness.

Myrnam Fair Makes Everyone Smile Nicole Crossan

T he Myrnam Ag Society barbecue and silent auction kicked off the Myrnam Fair and Fun Days on Friday, July 18th.

In a town with a p opulation of 379, just over 250 people were in attendance. From a distance, there appeared to be a never ending lineup at the kitchen of the Myrnam Arena.

Volunteers from the Myrnam Ag Society cooked steak, hamburgers, and hotdogs for their customers and filled up the rest of their plates with side dishes. Thanks to the large group of people in attendance, just over $6000 was raised at the silent and live auctions to purchase rescue equipment for the fire department. Nestor Saskiw, Parade Marshall, commented on how grateful the Ag Society is for all the support they have received from the strong group of committed volunteers to the people in attendance at the events this weekend.

Just over 170 people attended the pancake breakfast the next morning despite the gloomy, foreboding weather that threatened to rain on the Myrnam parade.

At the show and shine, people can put anything they have of interest on display—from cars and trucks to snowmobiles. “It doesn’t even have to be a motorized vehicle,” John Fedoriuk explains, “you can bring out anything you have of interest.”

The police siren signaled the beginning of the parade. Suddenly the rain stopped and the sky began to clear. The rain held up the rest of the day, which allowed the events to run without a hitch.

As soon as the parade was finished, Leon Benoit spoke about his childhood days watching the parade and collecting candy.

He commended all involved in making the Myrnam Fair a successful event year after year and encouraged them to keep up the good work. Donna Rudolph from the Town Council said a few words, followed

by Nestor Saskiw’s announcement of the parade winners.

As the rain dried up from the warmth of the sun that appeared out of the morning clouds, some children had time to play on the pink castle and blue marine inflatable bouncy toys and to ride the ponies, while other children and adults stayed inside the giant belly of the Myrnam arena to watch the rodeo.

This is the first year Myrnam has had a pony ride at the fair thanks to Terence and Megan Nichols who set up and ran this event. They expressed their joy at how much enthusiasm they witnessed as the children lined up to go on the ponies again and again. One

Andrew Yaremko, organizer for the 5th Annual Ranch Rodeo in Myrnam, says, “It’s not like the traditional rodeos. Most of the events emulate something people do every day on the ranch. It is slower paced than regular rodeos and most of the skills required are in stockmanship and horsemanship rather than action.”

The announcer, Miles Wowk, states, “Ranch rodeos are becoming more and more popular because people like to come to their local communities and see their local cowboys compete.” There were six teams entered into the rodeo this year from Bonnyville, Vegreville, Hay Lakes, and local teams.

One of the events that had the audience riveted was the team penning event.

Miles announced that teams had to get two calves in the stall at the same time. If they only got one calf in they would receive a minute and a half time penalty. He advised the contestants that it would be better to get one penned and lose a minute and a half than to get none at all.

One team gathered their two calves and seemed ready to pen them both easily when the horned calf suddenly changed direction. Meanwhile the red calf eased towards the open pen and waited at the door. Team members

Fountain Tire Annual Pancake Breakfast

Fountain Tire held its Annual Pancake Breakfast on July 25. Darrin Zubiak, Manager of Fountain Tire, held their 6th annual pancake breakfast during the Vermilion Fair.

Proceeds from the breakfast will be donated to the “Walking through Grief Society.�

In attendance, helping cook pancakes and sausages for the numerous amount of community members who came out to help support the event, were Blair Macnab who had worked with Fountain Tire for 28 years, Randy Macnab who has been employed with Fountain Tire for the last 25 years and works in the Fort MacMurray location and Dick Allen who worked at Fountain Tire for 43 years and is presently resides in Edmonton.

The Mannville Multi and Vermilion Interclub Sheep and Goat sale wa s h e l d o n Tu e s d ay, J u l y 2 2 a t the Vermilion Ag Grounds. Sheep and goat members showed off their animals and all of their hard

work to the judges and the crowds.

Members choose a market lamb in the spring and then care for it until the Achievement Day and Sale. They learn how to feed, groom and teach the lambs to lead.

Slo-pitch Tournament Details

The 4th Annual Tournament hosted

by The Village of Innisfree, the Innisfree Ag. Society and the Tournament Organizing Committee (Conrad Baranec) welcomed 19 teams from across central Alberta and Saskatchewan. Originally 20 teams had entered, with 7 on a waiting list, but a team dropped out late on Thursday afternoon and we were not able to fill the vacant spot.

We played 34 games over a three-day weekend. After receiving over an inch of rain on Thursday night, grounds crews and volunteers were able to dry the diamonds for what turned into excellent playing conditions for the remainder of the week-

end. The Saturday night social was hosted by the Innisfree Ag Society.

The tournament donated $825 from overflow camping to the Kid with Cancer Society on behalf of Dwayne Fowler and Family. The Kyle Jackson Memorial Skills Competition was cancelled this year due to weather, field conditions and player safety.

However, this popular event will return in 2015 in memory of Kyle. Concession was provided by Shannon and the staff of Porky’s Catering. On-site camping was provided by the Innisfree Park & Campground and Dwayne Fowler and Family.

NSA carded officials were provided on Sunday for all the finals.

“Lacer The Racer” Alumni Golf Tournament LIndsey Montgomery

Peter Walsh, a n I n s t r u ctor for Lakeland College and Coach for the Rowing Team, has once again organized what is called `Lacer the Racer`an annual Golf Tournament in memory of Lacey Longworth.

Longworth was a dedicated member of the Lakeland College Rowing Team for four years with, who passed away in a tragic car accident. In her memory Walsh created what he describes as a “Golf Bash”.

Every year during the fair weekend the tournament is held at the Vermilion Golf Course. It is named in honour of Longworth and the Alumni come back to town from all over the prairies, teaming with Longworth’s family who hail from Saskatchewan where Longworth came from, as well as family from different parts of Alberta.

Border Bike Rally Stops in Vermilion From July 2 5 -2 7 t h e 2014 Border B i k e R a l l y, which is organized by the Lloydminster Lions Club, began at the Exhibition grounds in Lloydminster.

Approximately 125 bikers (half the normal amount due to the weather man) suited up for the White Cane Run where the bikers headed out at 8:30 a.m. to their designated checkpoints. One of those stops was made in Vermilion at the Co-op Gas Bar. Bikers took the time to take a rest, fuel up their rides, and exchange some friendly words with others.

Motorcycles and riders filled the parking lot at the Co-op at 10 a.m. as well as the parking lots across the street which made a grand sight for the passers-by and motorcycle enthusiasts.

Communities In Bloom-The Judges Speak Out Elina Castro

It is hard work; it involves a lot of travel; there is no money, but you get to meet superb people. So said the Judges of the Communities in B loom pro gram, Roger Younker and Alex Pearl, about the program which brought them to Vermilion. We found the Judges in the pristine 1,800 acre provincial park enjoying an al fresco lunch and watching the kids revel in the spray park.

Communities in Bloom is a coast-to coast-to coast not for profit organization founded 20 years ago by Raymond Carriere in Quebec. It began small, with only flower display and plant categories to be judged but, over time, it changed to include several categories, and expanded to many counties, big cities, and abroad. Today it is a national program sponsored by the likes of CN, Scotts, the Compost Council of Canada, Home Hardware and Miracle-Gro, among others.

Judges observe how communities contribute to their own environmental sustainability, and how governments and civil society work together to achieve a long term plan. The Judges may also advise communities on how to implement initiatives, what plans might turn out to be costly, or how to connect with communities with similar strategies. Participation is the key, the Judges said.

The Town of Vermilion participates actively in the Communities in Bloom program. Shawn Bell, Director of Community Services acts as liaison, and provides administrative support and ideas. The Town’s commitment to Reporter

Lakeland College Helps Boost African Economy Nicole Crossan

Lakeland College was invited to participate in filling a gap that employers in Africa had found between the skills their employees needed for graduation, and the competency of the graduates available for employment.

As a result, Lakeland’s Education for Employment project aligns labour force and training with the needs of local employers. The ultimate goal is to give the African economy a boost.

To accomplish these goals, staff from Lakeland College in Vermilion worked with colleges and instructors in three African countries. Michael Crowe, Dean of Teaching and Learning in Vermilion, travelled to Tanzania seven times. Of the three projects completed, two focused on agriculture and held train-thetrainer workshops with college instructors in Tanzania.

The main accomplishment of this three-year project was a revision—from a primarily knowledge-based, classroom learning curriculum— to one that also includes skills-based training. These changes have enabled students to graduate with employable skills.

Several staff from African colleges took part in short exchanges to Lakeland College to learn about leadership and governance as well as organization and operations management.

One extension course offered by Lakeland College staff to the people of Tanzania was soil conservation, which enables people there to have a more sustainable farm economy.

very diverse in both culture and physical landscape. There are plains and grasslands in the northwest and volcanic mountains such as Mt. Kilimanjaro to the northeast. Central Tanzania is a large plateau which contains Lake Tanganyika, Africa’s deepest lake, intensely studied for its unique underwater life.

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest city, located on the east coast with a hot, humid climate and sandy beaches.

In Tanzania alone, there are about 125 tribes—each with its unique customs and language. The Swahili language brings people together. Although the climate is mostly tropical, it is diverse.

In places temperatures fall to the single digits at certain times of year.

Since many survive off of the food they grow for themselves, they cannot afford many of the common household items we have access to in Canada. As a result, for an alternate source of income many are attempting to grow the tourism and mining industries.

Today, the people of Tanzania are attempting to implement the skillbased curriculum revisions that were made over the course of this project.

There were unexpected challenges: it takes more time, planning, and access to resources, which are in short supply there, to implement a skill-based curriculum than a knowledge-based curriculum. Thanks to Lakeland College staff, some of these challenges are being met.
