Wild Pink Yonder Wild Pink Yonder Submitted One out of every nine women will face breast cancer in her lifetime. Too many will succumb to it.

With your help, we’d like to change that.

Each summer Wild Pink Yonder takes an outrageously pink covered wagon and an entourage of intrepid outriders called The Hole in the Head Gang on a 3 week, 300-400 mile trek throughout the province of Alberta. This year they

are travelling the Iron Horse Trail.

Their purpose is to raise money that will be used for breast cancer research.

Participants come from far and wide to ride off into the Wild Pink Yonder. Some bring their saddle horses. Others bring wagons or buggies.

Think of this as an all-inclusive holiday ... one that will help ride breast cancer into the ground!

MainStreet Hardware has partnered with “Wild Pink Yonder”, the #1 fundraising trail ride

for all cancers, that have ridden throughout Alberta to raise funds for breast cancer research. Since 2009 the Wild Pink Yonder group raised has raised over $$633,000 towards this goal.

Vermilion Voice Celebrates 10 Years Lindsey Montgomery Reporter A barbeque lunch was served at the Vermilion Voice on July 16 to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Vermilion Voice newspaper. Hot dogs, hamburgers, refreshments and cake were all available and the cost was by donation.

All proceeds from the lunch were donated to VIBE (Vermilion Is Being Empowered). The VIBE team served up lunch to locals, from noon until two in the afternoon.

Along with lunch a station was set up for face painting and balloon animals.

Garden Tour Lindsey Montgomery Reporter Vermilion Communities in Bloom hosted a self guided Garden Tour on Wednesday July 16, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

The tour consisted of four homes which featured their beautiful yards and gardens for participants to enjoy.

Tour participants used a map to follow the addresses of the homes and were able to take their time and admire the hard work of the gardeners.

Gardens varied from modern styles to raised gardens and mixing of the flowers and vegetables.

The beauty of these gardens left people speechless. A sense of peace and tranquility filled the air as folks took in all the sights, smells, and sounds surrounding them.

Congratulations to the Vermilion Agricultural Society on the upcoming kickoff to an exciting and enjoyable Annual Fair on Thursday, July 24.

The Parade begins at 11 a.m.and the theme this year is “From Wagon Wheels to Ferris Wheels”, commencing with a

pancake breakfast at the Legion on.

If you wish to turn green with envy while watching the Mounted Cowboys fire a pistol or a rifle accurately while on horseback, or partake in the actionpacked rides, pony chariot races and junior lamb trimming, it will all be up and running for you over three days.

The “Small but Mighty” 4-H Sheep Club Achievement Day on Tuesday, July

22 at the Vermilion Fair grounds promises to be a fun learning experience for those interested in raising farm animals.

Legendary Mantracker,Terry Grant, was on hand at the Vermilion Provincial park for a remarkable one-day handson class teaching a group of enthusiasts to recognize and track different sets of prints as well as reading signs on the ground.

As for the Orchid Class, held on Saturday, July 19 at the School of Hope, instructors Adam and Celine Foster of the Orchid Society of Alberta and the Orchid Species Preservation Foundation taught us to discover how these exotic plants grow and thrive in different environments, whether at home or in greenhouses.

yesterday, and landed in Edmonton airport around noon, I have been on a secret mission to infiltrate the Vermilion Voice and write this Editorial. The reason is, although I have been a Canadian citizen since 1986, I hail from sunny Argentina. I grew up in my family’s 5,000 hectare cattle ranch where we produced top quality beef, therefore I have been in a serious rush to get here for the Vermilion Agricultural Fair.

Since yesterday, I have admired your luminous rolling hills, and gawked at some seriously healthy cattle; I have met some friendly people, I have attended orchid lessons and met a good looking professional Tracker; I even managed to spot some deer and a jackrabbit.

Yes indeed, I know exactly what you mean when you say: “Welcome to Vermilion.”

With the support of the County Electors covering the entire municipality, we achieved our required numbers. This was a collaborative effort and we want to thank every person who helped or contributed to ensure this valid document is now before Council and needs to be addressed.

Letters to the Editor On July 10, 2014, a petition by the electors containing 955 names/signatures was presented to a representative of the Chief Administrative Officer at the County of Vermilion River in Kitscoty, Alberta.This petition was in opposition to By-law #14-23 of Section 251 of the Municipal Government Act regarding the debenture for the Dewberry Indoor Arena in the amount of 1.4 million dollars (A debenture is a type of debt instrument that is not secured by physical assets or collateral. Debentures are backed only

by the general credit worthiness and reputation of the Issuer.)

The Municipal Affairs guidelines allow electors the democratic right to petition the County Council should they have concerns regarding the County Council decisions. As per Section 223 of the Municipal Affairs Guidelines at least 10% of the County’s total population was required to sign the petition within 15 days of the last date in which the by-law was advertised (June 25, 2014).

Conservative Government Tackles Prescription Drug Abuse and Increases Reaction Reporting OTTAWA (July 15, 2014) – Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, recently highlighted the Conservative Government’s initiatives to help foster the health and safety of Canadians when it comes to using prescription drugs.

“I’m proud of our Government’s action to combat both prescription drug abuse and bolster drug reaction reporting,” said Benoit. “National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day, our Government’s National Drug Safety Strategy and Vanessa’s Law are all important initiatives that our Conservative Government has put forward to help combat the adverse effects of prescription drugs in our society.”

Combatting prescription drug abuse The National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day was introduced by the Conservative Government in 2013, and encourages all Canadians to safely dispose of unused pharmaceuticals to a designated pharmacy, police or fire station. By doing so, Canadians are participating in an overall strategy

to help combat the problems associated with prescription drug abuse. “By taking part in the Drop-Off Day, all Canadians can take an active role in and making our streets and communities safer,” stated Benoit. “It is my hope that this initiative is continued in the years ahead.”

As an additional measure, Benoit noted that Budget 2014 will commit close to $45 million over five years to expand the focus of the National AntiDrug Strategy to include prescription drug abuse. The investment will be used to educate Canadian consumers on the safe use, storage and disposal of prescription medications, improve prevention and treatment facilities for First Nations communities, increase inspections to prevent illegal sale, and improve surveillance data for prescription drug abuse in Canada. “The abuse of prescription drugs is a serious public health and safety issue for many communities across Canada, continued Benoit. “It has a devastating impact on individuals – especially youth – and their

Taking action to increase prescription drug reporting Benoit also highlighted the importance of the Protecting Canadians from Unsafe Drugs Act (Vanessa’s Law), named after Vanessa Young, a teenager who died of a heart attack while on a prescription drug that later was found to be unsafe and removed from the market.

Once passed, Vanessa’s Law will put into force tough new measures to mandate better prescription drugreaction reporting, labelling, faster recalls, and stricter penalties for non-

compliance. In turn, these measures will help doctors and patients become aware of new possible risks, potentially saving lives. “Members on both sides of the House strongly supported this legislation and I encourage all Senators to do the same,” continued Benoit.

“It’s an important step toward safer health products for all Canadians and to reduce the odds of a tragedy like Vanessa’s from happening again.”

“Canadians recognize that prescription drugs must still be made available for patients that really need them,” concluded Benoit. “That’s why our Government has made a serious commitment to increase consumer confidence in therapeutic products and help protect patient health and safety.”

It is so good to see summer finally here, with warm or even hot sunny summer days, everything has grown to maximum green and it’s so nice to be outdoors.

I am fully dried out after the heavy rains, but there is a lot of standing water still in the fields, which with summer will mean more mosquitoes, so be prepared when you go outdoors.

West Nile virus still looms in our summer world, so protect yourself and your family with lots of mosquito repellent on hand and use them wisely. These days there are many types of safe, userfriendly repellents out there.

The butane gas powered ThermaCELLs are a great investment for the patio and picnic areas. The ThermaCELL lantern creates a 15x15-foot zone of protection, and there are compact personal carry units also.

If one doesn’t like the sprays, OFF makes an odorless hand lotion that works well, and restores wind and sun dried skin, it doesn’t work as long, and will deteriorate quickly with perspiration if one is active.

But it works well, I use the OFF lotion when I am bow hunting as it is odourless, and as a bonus I am usually wind burnt

and my hands feel like sandpaper when playing in the outdoors.

Speaking of sprays, summer and patios, some of the wife Roxanne’s summer furry friends finally showed up, her black with stripes down their back— stinky kitties.

We haven’t seen the tamest and most spoiled ones yet, “Flower” and “Fi-Fi La Phew”. There are three smaller ones, most likely all females and of different ages.

I believe they are from “Flower’s” past litters because they know the routine but are a little on edge and not as friendly as the older regulars. I have to watch my step when pretending to be master of the BBQ. As a matter of fact these new pets; I call them pets with an extra S in the spelling …“pests” (ha ha). Anyway these new ones walk around with their tails constantly straight up, ready for mayhem.

In fact, it was just the other night as I was relaxing, just minding my own affair on the couch after a long day when, in an instant, my eyes started watering along with my nose, burning with the unmistakeable perfume of the white striped kitty.

Of course, all the windows were open in the house but, once you smell it … it is too late: You can’t close the windows then, as it just traps the odour in the house, so you just have to endure until

it dissipates.

It’s rare but it usually happened once a summer when we had the dogs, but now with no dogs and, since it sprayed right on the patio, I have a good idea of what happened.

In our new litters of outdoor kitties this spring, we have a few—well, let’s say “unique” kittens. We found good homes for most, but we always seem to end up with the “unique” ones.

One kitty which we call “Miss “H&H” is a Calico, but mostly grey with orange and white markings. Her most unique feature is her face which looks like someone took a paint brush to her grey face with bright orange paint and perfectly painted one half orange centered right down her nose.

Hence the name “Miss H&H” meaning half and half. Anyway, she is the kitten that while at play attacks anything that moves—come to think of it, it doesn’t even have to move.

She has no fear of any of the full grown outdoor kitties and will wrestle their leg in a flash as they walk by. The white stripped kitty was just another opportunity…however, this time the end results stank.

Well, as of today July 16th, we can find the results of our 2014 Hunting Draws on-line, all except for Goat and Antelope which are not available until august 8th, and plan our big adventures for fall.

I don’t have to do much planning as

out of 12 draws my results were 0…that’s zero! However, I’m not going to whine about it as here in Alberta we still have plenty of non-draw hunting opportunities.

More so for bow hunting, so my adventures will still be many and I so look forward to them, 47 Sleeps as of today to opening day, starting off at the cabin taking Elk for their 7-mile walk each morning.

As for my wife she drew a big goose egg … 0 so I will just have to work a little harder for our table fare this year, which means more adventures.

Wildrose Launches Licence Plate Design Competition for Alberta Artists Wildrose Official Oppositon Submitted

EDMONTON, AB (July 16, 2014): The Wildrose Official Opposition is asking Alberta graphic artists and designers to submit their designs for Alberta’s new licence plate and will host an online voting competition to determine the top design.

The Wildrose Caucus Foundation will make a $2,500 donation to the winning designer’s charity of choice. The winning designer will also receive a $500 cash prize, courtesy Wildrose MLAs. Submissions will be collected until noon on Aug.3, after which time finalists will be chosen and posted for Albertans to vote on.

Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said the competition is intended to showcase the immense talent in Alberta’s graphic design community and give Albertans a greater say in what will be become an

important symbol of Alberta’s identity.

The PCs chose Minnesota-based 3M to provide design options for Alberta’s new plates.

“The PC government missed a golden opportunity to engage with Albertans and give them a direct say in choosing how to express our collective identity,” Smith said. “We are inviting Alberta’s art and design community to give us their creative best on what they think the plates should look like. I have no doubt the submissions we receive will be top notch and will hopefully force the government to change its approach.”

The Wildrose Caucus Foundation was formed in March of 2013 after PC MLAs approved an 8% increase in MLA pay, despite objections from Wildrose MLAs. In response, Wildrose MLAs unanimously agreed to set up a charitable fund to donate their increase in pay.

As we go through life, we can reflect back on folk s who have, in our early life perhaps, affected out lives in real, life changing ways.

Maybe it was your Mom and Dad, or Uncles or Aunts that left a lasting impression on you. Can you remember a teacher or co-worker you had the pleasure of sharing time with? Seems they all had special gifts that they could let you use to enrich your life. Nice to give credit where credit is due. Make a list, give it some thought and perhaps you’ll see how come you are what you are!! Besides our family, the people who influenced us the most were our school teachers.

I had a hard time getting settled at school, and my first teacher had a difficult time planning the edges off this diamond in the rough. I can tell you!!!

One lady teacher named “ Dora” called me “ Frank”, and I’ve hated being called that ever since. One male teacher called “Steve” was a bully and an alcoholic to

boot, he taught me to resent people who misuse authority.

Then there was “Pearl” who was such a wonderful lady, she taught us all what love can accomplish and she was a jewel. We lost her when we were burning the tall grass in the school yard and set the barn on fire. The excitement was too much for her and she had a heart attack and passed away in October. She had me starting to play the piano. By spring I’m sure I’d have been able to play. Then the last 2 years at Ganton, Flo come up with two small boys and did more in those two years then I’d attained in all the years before and I was able to get by to the grade nine departmental exams we had back then. She seemed to know the potential all her students possessed and was able to help them realize them.

What a blessing she was and is to us still.

My next person of consequence was a little gal named Gwen Dunsmore, who taught Language at Kitscoty High.

She had attended school with my mom and I really admired her abilities as a teacher. At the school dance she also taught me how to do the “Old Time Waltz”. Yes I’ll never forget her.

When circumstances at home dictated that I had to quit school to

work at home, I changed from a school student and entered the “School Of Hard Knocks, yes a Knocks College”. In just a few years later my dad had developed a rare disease and passed away. It was a good thing he had taught me the most important values of life and though I felt so unprepared for life’s battles, bro and I took on managing the farm operations on our own. It would have been scary without his counseling in our lives to guide us. We did struggle by times.

I can tell you, and we did make some mistakes that experience could have helped us avoid. Mom left us on our own and finally got to do what she wanted to do- she became a nurse and fulfilled a dream. Elmer and I got married in July, me on the 4th and Elmer ten days later.

We spent years building new houses and having family, but unhappily my marriage didn’t survive past 20 years, but we did have five special people come into our lives and then I became a grandfather twelve times. Really people of precious consequence in many ways.

After I left the, “Kule Vue Ranch” , and landed up Elk Point way, I met people who started me on a career in music. I started signing in the Elk Point United Church and with the help of Sam Donald-

son became a member of the choir.

Mrs. M’Aleese who was music director encouraged me to sing some solos and it was such a wonderful experience.

About then I met the Heffernan music family and was invited into their fold to sing and play harmonica. Life changing people. They played music in their house as naturally as some of us eat. It couldn’t have been better. Their influence has changed my life. About then, Bob Hendricks, who sang in the choir with me started a little paper called the, Silver Trumpet, a paper for seniors. In the process of putting an ad in the paper I voiced that I would like to write stories of my early life on the farm. He encouraged me to bring my stuff along to our next meeting, and the rest is history. I guess, as he printed them in his paper, word for word. When I finally came back home to Vermilion, Sue Chikie, the editor of this paper, encouraged me to come write for her. Truly she is a person of some significance in my greatest adventure ever, and I ended up with a book with all my life’s experiences chronicled there. Well not really, there’s another book being edited now!!

Slaying Dragons Margaret Lonsdale Columnist

As a child in elementary school, I feared Friday mornings. The trepidation would begin on Monday and escalate as days passed. Fridays were the enemy.

And so I began to rehearse. I conjured up lists, my prepared lies. Nothing mattered more than being ready for Friday. When it was my turn to enter the cramped room at the back of the church, close the door and sit in terrifying darkness until the priest appeared in pale light from behind the partition, I took a deep breath to suppress my panic. Ready. I lied seven times. I talked back to my mother four times. I used swear words once. And I had bad thoughts in my head....well, lots.

Absolution. Penance. Prayer. Relief.

Guilt consumed me. What was the punishment, I wondered, for lying while not wanting to lie in the confessional booth but lying anyway so that I would have something to confess? I dreamed nasty things. I imagined Hell and the guy who would delight in taking me there.

Over time, my fear diminished. Maturity has an amazing way of delivering

perspective. And the confidence to slay some dragons.

No one specifically told me there was a minimum number of sins required at the confessional, but neither did anyone counsel us on how to approach confession if we hadn’t any sins to report.

It’s interesting how guilt and the fear of doing wrong can influence how we conduct ourselves, especially as children.

Our self-preservation instincts awaken.

Innate within every creature resides the natural desire to defend against potential harm. As a child, although I was aware that making up a fictional ‘sin list’ was not particularly virtuous, fearing the repercussions of having nothing to confess trumped my need to adhere to plain truth.

Creating fear of unknown or implied consequences is a powerful tactic used with immense success by adver tisers, retailers, business, religions, and government. Its signature message often involves leaving us either suspicious of a competing product or entity, or else desirous of something we do not yet possess.

In marketing, for example, undesirable comparatives are made between competing brands. If you use a PC rather than a MAC, you’re probably an inarticulate schlump or at least behind the times. Get

with it!

Our rational minds scoff at such blatant insult to our intelligence, yet we are influenced by these nonsensical scenarios even while recognizing the nonsense comprising them.

In matters more serious than choosing which technology will most enhance your level of cool, the basic principle still applies. Create fear of inadequacy and you destabilize confidence. It’s possibly the cheapest of all psychological games, but it works.

There’s something sinister about undermining people’s confidence, isn’t there?

Especially when the subject matter is much more substantial than choosing the best retail products to correct perceived lacks. We’re regularly influenced, for example, by political representatives who wish to promote ideas serving a specific agenda----their own. We dismiss the often shameless self-promotion, but we still intake the message. We regularly receive only part of the story, because leaving us not quite completely informed is advantageous. We hear reports of what ‘might’ quietly be happening to citizens and groups whose views conflict with policies promoted by those in power, includ-

ing: random (targeted) audits by Canada Revenue Agency; denial of critical operational funding; undisclosed cybersurveillance; censorship of speech; dismissals from employment; discrediting previously credible expertise; diminishment of institutions formerly the focus of national pride and identity; demonization of evidentiary science concerning climate change and environmentalists who advocate the protection of clean air and water supply.

The list is staggering.

We’re a peaceful and polite people.

Many Canadians are reticent about speaking out or asking too many questions of authorities. We’re not really natural born radicals. Yet in our conversations, and in our private moments, there exists now an undercurrent of unrest, and a foreboding, a knowledge that something’s not quite right in the village. We’ve been diminished somehow, without consultation or consent, and it leaves us feeling less free, less democratic, less like the people we collectively aspire to be. Less Canadian. We will have to work diligently to clear away the debris and find our way through to the light again. Soon.

Danielle Marie A Semi-Finalist Lindsey Montgomery Reporter Local talent Danielle Marie has some exciting updates to share. Marie has been named a Semi Finalist in the 2014 “Unsigned Only competition” for four of her songs in seven categories out of 8,000 submissions. An impressive feat for the rising star.

The competition is looking for the next big thing to hit the music industry and Marie is proving she has what it takes as a fierce competitor.

“It is so surreal” said Marie on being picked as a semi finalist.

You may have heard her current radio single titled ‘Back Road’ on Country Radio station Lloyd FM. This song is one she had used in the competition.

The competition is for people who are not signed or affiliated to a record label.

Marie explained, “It’s a good chance for people who are just starting out raw and want more exposure to get into the music industry”.

Marie will be launching a cross Canada radio tour in September starting on the West coast, making her way to the Maritimes.

Dawns Eats- Blueberry Cobbler Dawn Hames Columnist

Blueberry season is upon us. I love eating fresh blueberries with milk and cooked quinoa.

Blueberries are on the A plus list when it comes to antioxidants. They are a true nutrient power house. Blueberries have the highest amount of antioxidants of all fruit. Recent research has shown that when eaten regularly they deliver the following benefits: increased cognitive function, improved memory and help to stabilize blood sugar.

A study at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center suggests that eating

blueberries may help reduce belly fat, by regulating blood sugar and stabilizing insulin. Blueberries in the amount of one to three cups daily reduces total cholesterol and are heart protective.

You can freeze blueberries, with little loss of nutrients, I freeze them in the clear plastic container they come in, just as they are, and they keep well for a whole year. I wash them when I am ready to use them.

Organic or wild blueberries have more antioxidants and beneficial nutrients, than conventionally grown blueberries.

Here is a delicious desert that takes advantage of the summer abundance of blueberries. The cobbler topping can be spooned on like cobblestones, allowing ample room for steam to escape while baking, or smoothed out like a cake with

a central opening in the batter, for steam to escape and prevent the blueberry base from bubbling out. This desert is a winner served warm or cold with ice cream.

Blueberry Cobbler Cobbler Topping 1 1/2 cups flour, all purpose is fine 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup melted butter 1 cup milk 1 or 2 teaspoons sugar Base 4 cups blueberries 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 tablespoon sugar Pre heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the blueberries into a 8” x 8” pan. Combine

the cornstarch and the 1 tablespoon sugar in a small bowl and then gently stir this mixture into the blueberries.

In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar and mix well.

Combine the melted butter and milk and then stir into the flour mixture. Do not over mix or the topping will be tough and hard.

Lightly grease the bottom of an 8” x8” pan. Pat the batter into an 8” x8” pan and smooth out to the edges, leaving a space in the middle for steam to escape.

Sprinkle the batter with the 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes, depending on your oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out.

The Vermilion Agricultural Society has been working hard to bring you what will be an amazing event.

Thursday morning there will be a pancake breakfast at the Legion which can be attended from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m.

To kick off the action the annual Parade will commence at 11 a.m. then at noon the Beer Gardens are open for business and the Exhibit Hall will open too. Old MacDonald’s barn will hold furry friends, big and small for you to meet until 8 p.m.

The action packed rides, brought to you

by West Coast Amusement will be in full swing.

Head down to the stadium where you can find all the trade booths set up, which are open until 8 p.m.

If yelling “BINGO” gets you excited try your luck at the Bingo hall at 1 p.m. all three days.

You will find Pony Chariot races, Junior Lamb trimming and judging, Heifer Classic and Steer Jackpot, Junior Heifer Classic and Junior Equine Classes.

Don’t miss the Thursday all star Chicken Show, at 1 p.m.

Team roping (Sand Ring) is Friday afternoon as well as the Junior Sheep Classes.

Saturday afternoon these events will also include Pen of 3 Heifer Show in the Beef Ring, Cow/Calf Pair Show and a Goat Show. Senior/Open Equine Classes will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Mounted Cowboy Shoots will be held all three days at Lakeland College Arena. Thursday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. there will be Heavy Horse Hitches in front of the Grandstand. Saturday the Finals for the Mounted Cowboy Shoot will take place in conjunction with the Heavy Horse Hitch.

The Reunion Hall is open at 4 p.m. all three days.

The Official Opening will commence at 7:15 p.m. on evening with local artist Danielle Marie singing O Canada.

Chuck Wagon races are sure to entertain at 7:30 p.m. all three days.

The Fair will mostly follow its traditional schedule, however this year they will have different acts playing each night at the Grandstand Show. Thursday night Link Union will take the stage at 8:30 p.m, followed by Skill Circus at 9:15 p.m. On Friday Amber Bauer will play a show at 8:30 p.m., and then The Lindsays at 9:15 p.m.

Alliance Church Host “Love in Motion” Love In Motion Bicycle Tour

Parkview Alliance Church hosted the Love In Motion bike tour for lunch on Thursday as a group of forty-plus cyclist stopped in on their way by Vermilion.

Love in Motion is a fully supported ride across Canada to raise support and awareness for projects supporting many of our vulnerable and at-risk urban communities. Additionally, a ‘special’ motorcycle project will purchase motorcycles for agricultural specialists in Niger, West Africa. Bicycles and motorcycles are journeying from Vancouver to Halifax (or shorter one week rides along the way) from June 30 through August 31, 2014. Fire near Innisfree A fire took place on the evening of July 15, just east of the junction of Highways 16 & 870, about a 1/4 mile east.

The fire was reported just before 6 p.m. Three units from the Innisfree fire department responded and quickly extinguished the flames. Smoke could be seen as far away as Mannville. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club Represents in Olds Shelly Corbiere 4 - H Sheep Club Submitted

As many 4-H Clubs have wrapped up their year, the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club is in full swing. Our Local Achievement Day is on Tuesday, July 22. With 20 members working hard getting their sheep and goat projects ready, it is sure to be a great day. We encourage everyone to come support our show which starts at 2:00 pm. Our inter-club show with Mannville will start at 6:30 pm, followed with the sale at 7:30 pm. All classes will be at the sheep barn, found on the Agriculture Grounds.

In addition to Achievement Day, ten of our members took part in the 4th Annual Provincial Sheep Show held in Olds from July 8-11. It was a great week to meet old and new friends, learn new showing tips, participate in marketing and judging classes and so much more.

Our members represented our Vermilion Club very well with loads of smiles and confidence as they took part in a number of different classes. The show started off with a Marketing Contest, Judging and Trimming Classes. The sheep got involved for the Ewe Lamb Competition, Yearling Ewe without Lambs, Yearling Ewe with Lambs, Mature Ewe with Lambs, Lambs at foot, Ram Lamb, Project Flock, and the Market Lamb Class.

The week finished off with Showmanship and Team Judging.

Members that did not have an entry in a class pitched in to help their friends as some classes had the member with 2-3 animals to show in one class. One of our Cleaver Members, Avery Corbiere, was kept busy showing animals increasing

It was an exciting moment for the members when Mia Westergaard placed first in Junior Showmanship. This then allowed her to show in the Master Showmanship Competition. She showed a Market Lamb, Beef Project and Dairy Project, as she competed for the title of Master Showmanship. It was an amazing experience to be in that class, and the fact that she had never shown a dairy animal until that day, was a great moment for her. She went and watched

Another highlight was for Megan Krys as she placed first with her Yearling Ewe with lambs and this was an automatic advancement to go to the Calgary Stampede and show her ewes in the Parade of Champions at the Agrium Center.

Megan and Kaylie Krys took part in the Summer Synergy part of the Provincial Show. This program allows members an additional way to earn points with each class they place in, that can qualify them for scholarships. Kaylie headed to Calgary as she was one of 55 members

chosen from all the Synergy Participants to receive a scholarship. There will be more details to follow on the Krys trip to Calgary and how the girls did.

For all of our members and the 28 sheep that attended, it was a lot of hard work to prepare and take their projects down to Olds. However, with the great committee that organized the event, and the wonderful facilities, they all had a lot of fun, and have returned with many memories and encouragement to keep up the great work that they are already doing. Congratulations to you all!!!

We told you how Terry Grant aka ‘Mantracker’ would be making his way to Vermilion on July 18 and 19.

On Friday evening Mantracker was present for his meet ‘n’ greet and book signing at the local UFA Farm and Ranch Supply.

In conjunction with Grant who is the Chief Scout, the Vermilion Boy Scouts Club held their fundraising barbeque.

Yo u co u l d b u y h i s b o o k ti tl e d “Mantracking, The Ultimate Guide to Tracking Man or Beast” which came out last November for $25. “Part of the proceeds of the book sales will go to the scouts” explained Grant.

Ray Smith leader of the scouts who held the barbeque along with Grant’s book signing exclaimed “What a better person to have join us than Mantracker”. Smith would like to thank all who donated and helped with the barbeque.

On July 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grant held a class on tracking hosted by The Good Life Institute.

The group members eagerly gathered around the trout pond at the Provincial Park. Refreshments were set up for the group who got to mingle with Grant while registration took place.

Marilyn Christensen, the Coordinator for the Good Life Institute introduced Mr. Grant who began with an introduction of the day’s outline.

The day included demonstrative techniques and skills the Mantracker uses in his real life work of search and rescue and in his reality show “Mantracker.”

Mounted Cowboys Summer Saddle Series Sue Chikie Reporter The Mounted Cowboy Shooters will again compete in the start of the Saddle Series here at the Vermilion Fair, having been rained out for the first two legs this year.

Top shooters like Gary Couch, last year’s Highpoint Men’s Champion will be vying for the prizes here in Vermilion.

This is the third year the Summer Series is being held in Vermilion. Duncan MacMillan, who is the Event Coordinator, said “This is an exciting event which the crowd really enjoyed last year.”

Competitors come from Slave Lake, High Prairie, Calgary, Regina and Saskatoon to name a few. Results from the Vermilion show are connected to the CMSA, (the governing body of all shooting in North America). This action packed sport is also a world show qualifier.

The object of the competition is to execute accurate shooting while riding at high speed on horseback. MacMillan stressed horsemanship as the number one skill because you incur a 5-second penalty if you miss a balloon target. “A good horse makes all the difference.”

There are rifle, shotgun and pistol Cowboy Mounted Shooting™ is one of the fastest growing and most exciting equestrian sports in America.

It combines elements of Wild West Show exhibition shooting along with the skills of barrel racing, pole bending and reining while using two .45 caliber single action revolvers loaded with black powder blanks.

The object of the game is to shoot ten balloon targets while riding your mount through a variety challenging courses. It’s a timed sport in which the competitor who rides the fastest with the least amount of missed targets wins.

In this category, the first five balloons are shot with a pistol and the last five with a rifle. This requires the shooter to “drop the lines of the horse and shoot with both hands while riding at full speed with just the use of your legs.”

This year the regular competition takes place at Lakeland College’s Equine Centre on July 24 from 1-4 p.m. and on July 25 and July 26 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Approximately 50 participants will compete.

Twenty finalists from all the categories (rifle, rookie, pistol and shotgun), will compete in front of the Grandstand on Saturday, July 26 from 3-5 p.m for the Shooting Final in tandem with the Heavy Hitch Show.

“Depending on time we may have 2 to 5 rookie shooters in this year’s finals.”

The Rookie Championships are unique to Vermilion, added MacMillan. “We would like to try to hold on to that.”

For the first time in Canada, members who have joined the CMSA in the past year who do not have any CMSA wins under their belt are eligible to compete in this event for $500 in prize money as well as a chance to win a 22 lever action rifle.

Overall, there is approximately $9, 000 in prize money and prizes up for grabs

Vermilion Soccer Association Hosted Provincials

was underway as the Vermilion Soccer Association was host to the U14 and U18 Boys Soccer Provincials on the weekend Vermilion Soccer The weather was of July 11-13.

A large crowd was in attendance to beautiful, the sun shone and the action Geraldine Collins submitted

cheer on the teams in hopes of becoming a medalist.

The Vermilion Strikers U14 team, which borrowed two U14 girls and three U12 boys from our other teams, came in 5th of 9 teams, and the U18 boys team placed 6th of 8 teams.

Graham Town Lindsey Montgomery Reporter What words come to mind to describe the Old West? Horses, outlaws, ‘wanted’ signs, tumble weeds, wagons, blacksmiths, saloons.

Step into Graham Town located down township road 522 North of Kitscoty, for a trip back in time to get a feel of this historical era, and see some of the old fashioned sights for yourself.

Colleen Graham created the idea of Graham Town and since 1997 has been designing and bringing to life the place of illusion where you can visit, tour and participate on horseback in her guided trail rides. No experience in horse riding is needed, although they have options for experienced riders as well. “I take children five and up for horse rides, there are not many people that will do that but I have really great horses and guides” Graham said. Most of Grahams clients are people who have never had the experience of horseback riding but would like to try.

The “Town” consists of buildings that mimic those of the past. A general store filled with antiques, a jail, blacksmith, school, church, Doc’s office and more create what can only be described as out of this world.

Bookings can be done in advance, however if the day is right for riding and you would like to experience Graham town for yourself, the staff will do their

CTF Debt Clock Tour Comes to Town Canadian Taxpayers Federation Submitted

Today the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) came to town with the Alberta Debt Clock, as part of its campaign visiting 25 different communities and covering over 2,730 kilometers across the province. The CTF is launching the tour to raise the alarm about Alberta’s exploding debt and get politicians to take a firm stance on getting the province’s finances back under control.

“Making our great province debt-free once again is the number one priority for the CTF in Alberta right now,” said CTF Alberta Director, Derek Fildebrandt.

“We are going to take the fight to as many towns and cities as we can to rally support and put the heat on politicians to take a stance.”

At 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 10th, Alberta’s debt moved past the $10 billion mark. Alberta’s debt is projected to reach $21 billion by 2016-17 and

consume $1.4 billion a year in interest payments. The debt will increase by $4.7 billion in fiscal year 2014-15.

Coincidentally, Saturday, July 12th, 2014 marked the ten-year anniversary of Ralph Klein standing on the steps of the McDougall Centre hoisting a sign over his head that read that Alberta’s debt was “Paid in Full.”

“This is a bittersweet anniversary for us,” said Fildebrandt. “Ten years ago we saw the culmination of a lot of sacrifice from Albertans, but we got there. Since then our government has fettered away the Alberta Advantage to the point where we have spent the bulk of the Sustainability Fund and hold $10 billion in debt and growing.”

The CTF is inviting local MLAs to take a “Balanced Budget and Debt Free Alberta Pledge” as it visits communities.

Edna Sloan was born on September 20, 1921 in Kirriemuir, Alberta, the third of nine children including Marie, Orlo, Alma, Ray, Lois, Isabelle, Alberta and Gilbert. In 1934, her parents, Randolph and Bertha Hutchinson, bought a farm north of Vermilion where Edna resided until after high school. Edna attended Normal School in Camrose and, upon graduating, procured teaching positions in Peace River, Entwistle and Ottawa School. She spoke fondly of the many experiences she encountered while teaching, both with the students she taught and the families with whom she boarded. After teaching, she moved to Vancouver to work for the Department of Fisheries in the income tax department as a tax specialist, a job she loved. On October 13, 1950, she married Percy Sloan and settled in Mannville where she and Percy farmed until 1975. Although Edna did not have children of her own, she was a wonderful aunt to her many nieces and nephews as well as stepmom to Don Bain from her second marriage to Bill Bain.

She enjoyed her long retirement travelling, entertaining family and friends, reading, joining committees, gardening and canning, and baking her famous brownies. Edna will always be remembered for her curiosity regarding the world around her, her wealth of knowledge in numerous subject areas, and her keen and genuine interest in others. Her bright and inquiring mind remained intact until the end of her life.

Her family wishes to thank everyone who donated to the Gideons in her memory, sent cards, flowers and food, and who went to visit her. Your generosity is so greatly appreciated.

Thank you, too, to staff and residents at the Vermilion Valley Lodge who made her last few years most enjoyable.

She loved visiting with her many friends, old and new. We are also grateful to the staff at the Vermilion Hospital for their excellent care during Edna's last few months. Edna passed away on March 22, 2014.

A private burial will be held at a later date.

Alberta Culture Days 2014 Mural

You have been reading and hearSubmitted ing about the mural that is planned for the east exterior wall of the Seniors’ Centre. It will be called the Vermilion Heritage Mural. Reflecting the past, it will serve as a memorial to those of the Vermilion area who Allied Arts

were part of the area’s history. Reflecting the present, it will be an opportunity for people to contribute to this Vermilion project.

A donation of $200 will allow a couple’s names or an individual’s name to be placed on the plaque that will be installed beneath the mural. On Satur-

day, September 27, at 3 pm, we hope to have MLA Dr. Starke with us to formally introduce the mural to the community.

Alberta Hail Season is Coming Canadian Direct Insurance Submitted

Summer is the worst time of year for hail in Alberta, with high daytime temperatures linked to severe storms. Central and western Alberta have the highest frequency of hail in the country.

“Calgary is Canada’s hailstorm capital,” says Karen Hopkins-Lee, Chief Underwriter at Canadian Direct Insurance. “The area between High River and Red Deer is known as ‘hail alley’ for good reason.”

Hail can reach speeds of over 100 kilometres per hour, posing a threat to personal property.

Alberta’s hailstorm in August 2012 caused an estimated $552 million in insured damages.

Hail stones that fell over Calgary measured up to six centimetres, causing extensive damage to personal property – such as smashed windows, damaged roofs and dented vehicles.

According to Environment Canada, Alberta accounted for more than half of Canada’s insurable, weather-related losses that year.

Albertans can protect themselves by maintaining their home, covering their vehicle, and making sure they have hail coverage through their insurance provider.

“To protect your home in hail-prone regions, make sure your roof and siding are well maintained,” says Hopkins-Lee. “Consider

mitigating damage by installing impact-resistant rated roofing, and ask your insurer what hail claim deductible and limitations apply to your policy.”

If you’re planning to insure a vehicle in Alberta, make sure you have comprehensive insurance, and that your policy does not include a limitation for hail damage commonly called the ‘S.E.F. No. 13h Deletion of Hail’. This restriction typically applies to vehicles that have suffered hail damage, and have not been repaired.

IN CONJUNCTION WITH - WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY Our fifth annual “ Walk of Remembrance” is focused on continuing Sarah Hughes’ “Let’s Talk.” The Walk will be a time to honour the memory and the life of a loved one who has died by suicide.

To connect with others who have been impacted by suicide and to hear speakers, enjoy refreshments and music. This will be a time to look at mental illness and mental wellness. This will all happen on September 6th at the Lloydminster Bud Miller Park, picnic shelter at 3 p.m.

The activities will conclude at 6 p.m.

Accidental Falls into Water Pose Risk for Young Children Red Cross Submitted

Calgary, June 27, 2014 – Nearly 100 Canadians drown every year, many of them young children, after they unexpectedly fall into the water, states a new report released today by the Canadian Red Cross compiling 20 years of data.

The report, which examines waterrelated fatalities between 1991 – 2010, shows that children aged 1-4 are most at risk, accounting for more than 20 per cent of all fatalities due to unexpected falls around water. Of those who died from unexpected falls in the water, 28 per cent occurred at shoreline, 14 per cent occurred at poolside, and 9 per cent happened by a wharf.

“With the long weekend approaching, the Red Cross is urging Albertans to take precautions, 3”when wideengaging versionin any

activities on or around the water,” says Lesley Anne Morley, water safety representative with the Canadian Red Cross in Alberta. “A drowning can happen very quickly and it is critical that children have lifejackets on whenever they are near the water.”

On average, 525 people drown every year. The majority of these incidents occurred between May 1- August 31 while Canadians engaged in recreational activities on inland bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, rivers and streams.

The Orchid Whisperers On Saturday J u l y 19, a t t h e Reporter School of Hope in Vermilion, a group of keen orchid hobbyists enjoyed a humorous presentation by Adam Foster on the details of growing the exotic plants in various types of environment such as: indoors, greenhouses or terrariums.

Adam Foster works at the All Seasons Garden Centre, a hydroponic shop in Edmonton. With Celine Foster, he imports plants from California, Ecuador and Taiwan, and is also involved with the Orchid Society of Alberta and the Orchid Society Preservation Foundation (OSPF).

There is a huge variety of orchid types.

It appears that they have personality for, if you treat them all alike, they will be dead.

The fascinating Catasetum orchid with its waxy flowers has strict growing and resting periods, needs strong light, and great quantities of water during its short growing season. Humidity should be kept at 40-60%.

Cattleya, a popular orchid is an air plant which has developed water-storage organs. It is accustomed to being dry and should be potted in a freedraining media. Cymbidium on the other hand, used mostly for corsage in the spring comes in two sizes – standard and

miniature. This orchid is tolerant to heat and can flower in warm weather.

Dendrobium, a commonly found orchid, is an air plant as well. There are multiple types: some are pendulous, some are large and vigorous, others have to be kept cool and dry while resting in the winter. Miltonia orchids come from Brazil but originate in the Colombian Andes, Panama and Ecuador.

These striking plants are known as pansy orchids since they are quite similar to garden pansies.

Odontoglossum, if you can pronounce it, needs 2000-50000 foot candles in a greenhouse and heat levels kept down, while Oncidium originates in all kinds of

environments from the high Andes to sea level.

According to the American Orchid Society there is not a magic formula for how often to water an orchid since temperature, humidity, air movement, potting mix and light levels all play a role in its development.

In the end, though, what really counts is the interaction with and enjoyment of your plants. Remember to talk to them every day.

Summer Synergy is about giving youth in Agriculture every opportunity to become their own best - whatever it may be.

4-H members attending Provincial Sheep, dairy and beef shows compete against one another in the summer synergy program for aggregate points.

Points are gathered from the breeding conformation classes of their species show, multi judging competition, showmanship and Marketing.

Kaylie and Megan Krys, both registered to participate in the Summer Synergy classes above those required for the Provincial 4-H Sheep Show. Megan Krys advanced to the Calgary Stampede with her Grand Champion Mature Ewe with Lambs at foot and came home with a beautiful sheep protrait. Kaylie Krys was 6th place in the Intermediate category for Summer Synergy Aggregate Points. She qualified for a one of 15 intermediate scholarships. Kaylie advanced to the Calgary Stampede to determine if she would be awarded the $500 or $1000 scholarship. All scholarship candidates were bussed downtown Calgary to the Trevita office building where the scholarship interviews were held. Kaylie’s successful interview awarded her with the $1000 scholarship which Calgary Stampede will place in an RESP as well as a Calgary Stampede belt buckle.

All 55 scholarship award winners were introduced on stage, on Show Down Sunday in front of the rodeo crowd between the barrel racing and bull riding events. They were also able to stay and watch the rodeo.

A&W is holding a Garage Sale, on July 26 and 27 to raise funds for sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Funds raised from the sale of items donated by our generous community have been going to the MS Society. However, at this time, some funds have been allocated to the purchase of a walker for Donna Deford, to be handed to her on July 28.

An active MS patient, Donna believes in the principle of “just get out and do it” as she put it, and in maintaining her independence as much as possible.
